i have my theories, and its mainly because we're already so attached to the characters. obviously the writer doesnt have to make them oh-so-canonically accurate, but we still know who they are. we already know the subtle references that the author makes; we already know the nicknames and terms of endearment that they call each other; we already know their various quirks and sillies; we already know their family, and friends, and loved ones, or lack of loved ones! we dont have to go through 25 chapters of get-to-know-you before we can squeal. we dont have to wait 1000 years for the next book in the series to be published just to find out that the gay people dont kiss. reading books is like being dumped into a fantasy world, naked and afraid. you dont know whats going on, and you just have to figure it out. oh, also, youre a newborn and you have to relive life again just to be able to get to the part where shit happens.

No but why is reading fanfiction way easier than starting a new book
