sabrina @lanwangiji​, my love, tagged me to share my process of making this typography edit! check out her explanation of her the untamed edit and her edit tag. 

1. PLANNING

i once opened lyrics edit requests so i can learn and practice typography. this edit was a request as well. i asked them which lyrics they wanted to have and the colors they’d like. since i got several requests and it was hard to keep tabs on them, i made a trello board so i could organize everything. i’m still using the trello board for every edit idea i have, the board makes my life easier.

above is what i filled the card in the board with. basically just information of the requests.

1.1 INSPIRATION

once i got the request, my first thought was to find the vibe the song/lyrics exude. “it’s an old curse” screamed witchy vibes to me, so i went to pinterest to find some inspirations. at first i was looking for witchy poster designs and i came across this. i liked how it has smoke-ish graphic and i thought the smoke suited the “old curse” lyrics. and tbh pinterest is a rabbit hole, they gave me suggestions after suggestions, like this and this which became my inspiration for the color palette (i added the gold from those pics) and the sun moon design gave me the idea to incorporate space stuffs too. i somehow landed on this too, and because i wanted to include space theme, i made a simple phases of the moon. ultimately the hero of this edit was the lyrics, i didnt want the graphics took the center stage. i was inspired to make a crystal ball and do this kind of typography but after several trials i couldnt get the the typography right, so i scratched that idea and went with the space theme instead.

1.2 PICKING COLORS

after i was feeling inspired enough, i went looking for the right colors. i usually just type “color name” and “palette” on pinterest. example “dark grey color palette” and i chose the one i liked best. when the request only asked for 1 color, i always searched for either a complimentary or contrasting color to give it a jushz, to add sprinkles. that’s why i added gold on top of the dark grey. 

1.3 FINDING FONTS

this is the hardest part. the fonts play important role to the design. they need to convey the vibes of the lyrics, in this case witchy/magic vibe. i needed to find fonts or font just as magical and a bit whimsical. tho i hoard fonts... i like to use new font for every typography edit lmao sue me.

i highly recommend going to creativemarket free goods site, pixelsurplus font freebies and behance to search for fonts. i always use 100% free fonts, that means i can use it personally as well as commercially. creativemarket gives me desktop license for the fonts, which means i can use it for commercial as well. the reason i do this because i want to open an etsy shop someday, and i want to have the right license when i sell my stuffs. i almost never buy fonts bc they are expensive lmao. 

the fonts in used are “Vintage” for the main typograpy (i think i was a freebie from creativemarket) and “Morganite” for the title of the lyrics and the name of artist. 

2. CREATING

once i have my materials and ideas, i open my illustrator and hope it doesnt crash every 5 min.

for this kind of typography edits, i use 600x700 px. tbh i dont like using 540px, the suggested tumblr size, as the width bc to me it doesn’t look as good in quality, so i up the px. but more on this sizing later. i utilize the artboards function in illustrator, and i use 2 artboards.

i use illustrator (ai) bc i’m working with vectors. when i work with vectors, the graphics/texts or whatever im making in ai wont become blurry or lose its quality when i enlarge or shrink it. in compare to photoshop, i need to make for example the moon graphic very big, so i wont lose the quality when i reduce and enlarge it again. with vector, i can start small and when i expand it, it’s still as good as when it’s tiny. 

2.1 GRADIENTS

i started with the gradients first. i created a rectangle as big as 600x700px and with the “freeform gradient” tool in ai, i played with the colors. below is the color palettes i used

2.2 LYRICS AND GRAPHICS

once the gradients are done, i worked with the lyrics and graphics right away. when i first doing this edits, i made typos a lot lmaooooooo. so i copy and pasted the lyrics on top of my artboard, so i wouldnt have any typos. 

i had 3 layers in my ai. one for the inspo pics and the OG lyrics. the rest for the edits themselves. i broke up “It's an old curse/dreamers diving headfirst” into to parts, hence the 2 more layers

i almost always started with the lyrics first then the graphics. but for this edit, i made the smoke first so i can layout where my text would be.

tbh the process of making the lyrics is a trial and error. i tried bunch of different stuffs and i chose whatever the best. but i worked like methodically, i made sure i finished the first part of the lyrics first then i could move on.

i was lucky with this font “vintage”. the font offers me several glyphs like these

and i chose the one at the bottom. you’re very lucky if you find a font and they have glyphs.

excursion: glyphs vs fonts

glyph is an individual character. It might be a letter, an accented letter, a ligature, a punctuation mark, a dingbat, etc.

A font is a digital file which is used to display a typeface, which contains the entire upper- and lowercase alphabet as well as punctuation, numbers, and other special characters.

after i was finished with all the lyrics i added some graphics to make the edit pretty like small stars or dots. i added the song title and the artist too, sometimes at the bottom sometimes at the top. and i added my watermark put it as small as i could and made it a bit invisible but still can be seen.

2.3 EXPORTING

exporting! this is where i’m going to go deeper with the dimension of my work. in ai, i always choose to save with “export as screens” function. it automatically divides the artboards i have and save them separately. i always save as png, bc the size is smaller than jpg but can maintain the quality.

now the export tab looks like this

see the formats? i always scale up my edits, 2-3 times the original artboard size. reason is, to maintain the quality. i have tried to save it as original, 600x700 px, but it turned out a bit blurry. bc everything in ai is vector, when i scale up it doesnt lose the quality. BUT once i save it as png, it’s not a vector anymore, and when you zoom in until a certain degree it’ll be pixelated. that’s why i always scale up, to avoid it becoming pixelated when it’s just zoomed 1 or 2 times.

2.4 FINAL TOUCH

i opened my photoshop and also pray it won’t crash. import the png of my edits, add some grains/noise. the reason i use photoshop is, the noise filter is way better than in ai. it’s smoother somehow. and then i export my edits.

3. POSTING

now the hardest parts are done, we go to posting!

i uploaded the 2 posters on tumblr as photos then i wrote the captions. for this typography edit, i always chose another lyrics that i like from the same song for the caption. i bolded the lyrics, add link to all of my typography gradient edits.

i always use this link to color my caption. i usually choose 3-4 colors, and i took the colors from my edit. but this was not until recently lmao. before i just took a guess and looked for similar colors that match the edit, but then i thought “why didnt i just use the color in the posters lmao”

ok after i have my html code for the caption, i go to this site to replace the “;” with “ “ so tumblr can read the code.

i’m not one who puts their edits in draft, bc i just cant wait to post it. i have to option here, either i post it immediately when the time is right (i usually post between 4-8) or i schedule it, if im finished before 4. 

i put all the necessary tags and click post! i am done finally!

hi!! so I was inspired by your incredible positive vibes on this blog, and was wondering if it would be okay with you if I made a blog to do pretty much the same thing as you - like reblog ddlc art and make positive comments and stuff? I totally get it if that's your thing, but uh, I guess I just thought i'd ask! i love what you do! have a good day/night~

I really appreciate the sentiment in your question- but honest to god I hold no monopoly/trademark or any other nonsense on what I do here so I’m by no means some authority you must ask first, GO FOR IT :D

Thinking aloud- just about anyone would know the fandom could use another voice seeing as I’m not nearly as active as I once was (broken record)- and anyone could admit that’s true of just about any fandom, or art in general, or life in general etc.

I really hope you enjoy giving a blog a shot!

Have fun with it, and just do what you enjoy in terms of what you reblog or the tone you decide to set.

A few recommendations that you by no means need to follow:

~ Downloading xkit can help loads with making tumblr easier to navigate for running such a blog, I recommend things like “classic search”, “Tag Tracking”, and “Activity +” from the xkit addons, then add #DDLC , #Doki Doki Literature Club, and whatever similar tags you think are worth checking to your tracked tags.

At my highest point the blog used to maintain a 100% uptime on both those tags, scouring every post put in those tags each morning and evening so that I went roughly 3 months or more without a single post sneaking past me. That’s ludicrous, exhausting, and not great for you- so don’t repeat my mistake without help- just follow some tags and reblog what you like!

~ USE YOUR QUEUE. By no means necessary, but lord does it make life simpler. Add all your potential posts to your queue and set it to post however many you feel comfortable with daily over the course of the entire day. Completely unnecessary, but it’s nice to run a blog that can gather a backlog of posts that will slowly come out over the next few days as opposed to just mass dropping posts once every few days.

Again, unnecessary, no one cares, it’s no law, it’s just a matter of livening up your blog for followers.

~ I would argue the most important person for a blog like this one will be, and always will be, the artist. The followers are nice, fantastic even, I love them and adore getting to talk with them from time to time- but the reason I do what I do is to tell the ARTIST what I think. Sometimes this means my posts are boring to an outsider, but that’s fine. Because of this the entire “queue” system is entirely optional because if you decide to ignore that and just post like 30 things in a half hour and then take a long break for a week, your followers might be lost but the artist you intended to tell your thoughts is pleased either way- so don’t stress on how you run the blog~

~ It’s helpful to practice finding reposters. With enough time invested it gets a heck of a lot easier- but you won’t be perfect and don’t worry about it too much. But some helpful tips on that-

-- Look for posts with #My Art or similar tags, those are used more often by legit artists than reposters because most reposters aren’t trying to claim they created the piece- they are just being lazy and posting things they like with no respect to the original artist (basically just dragging a bunch of downloaded pics to their tumblr with no regard to who made them), so #My Art is a nice green flag saying “This is mine! Please reblog!”

-- Check for a watermark or signature- a lot of artists sign their work and if the sig doesn’t match the blog, double check the blog to see if they identify as the name signed or if they are just some reposter, it takes very little time (just read their blog description and if it feels sketchy give it a pass)

-- I’d recommend 100% of the time giving the potential artist’s blog description a glance no matter what. It takes 2 seconds and it can confirm whether they are the creator or not 99 out of 100 times. Some blogs just have descriptions like “Jpg.meme” and you notice that they just repost other people’s stuff all day with no credit given, and it’s a waste of time to reblog from them. Now going that extra mile to find the OP, that’s pretty cool to do- but that’s up to you and sometimes it’s borderline impossible (A lot of great artists use other sites and don’t post their work here- meaning the reposter is the only “source” so you just have to shrug and let it pass after [hopefully] sending the OP a message alerting them to the situation on their social media of choice)

~ I PUT A LOT OF IMPORTANCE AND EFFORT INTO PREVENTING PROPAGATION OF ART THEFT BUT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO. I know I made it seem like you have to but really, you don’t. I’d appreciate anyone starting up because of my blog to at least avoid propagating it, but you don’t have to go above and beyond to send messages, hunt down the artist, or any of that nonsense. I’d just appreciate if you think the poster isn’t the artist- don’t give them false attention, that’s all, and if you make a mistake then it’s literally 100% okay, you’re not the reposter in that situation, you were simply fooled which is fine.

~ Really just have fun. Blog when you want to, take a break whenever, stop when you feel like it- but I want to thank you just for having the thought to start such a thing :)

It’s such a kindness to dedicate some effort to spreading some appreciation and I appreciate YOU for doing that. Have fun and maybe don’t take it as seriously as I do lol :P

I actually answered a similar question a while ago! But I can’t find it so I guess to sum it up I mostly think at some point it’d just become something both of them have talked about throught the years enough times that by then it’ll just be something they are gonna do, sooner or later, and when it’ll happen it’ll be more like “we have a stable income and a house and a dog and a cat and are p much already married we should really do this already” - in a scenario like that either of the two works, for me haha

Thank you so much for liking my kids!!!! ;O; and sadly I can’t tell you too much about them cause their story is a bit still up in the air as far as details go, but in general they used to be best friends back when they were kids, then the accident that gave Leo his scars happened and for reason they lost track of each other for a long while - they met again recently, tho! Leo’s been in love with Max since they were babies and being able to talk to him and interact with him again makes him incredibly happy/mushy/soft but also absurdly and unreasonably overprotective since he’s really, really scared of losing him again - Max… because of plot-related reasons hasn’t realized that Leo is the kid he used to know back when he was super young, so his falling in love with him happens as the story progresses. He finds the overprotectiveness silly and unecessary, but he doesn’t exactly mind it? He has a feeling it helps Leo more than it helps him, so he lets him do his thing. All in all, maybe Max takes more care of Leo than Leo of Max. Welp, their story is kind of a mess haha

Seven Lions @ EDC Orlando 2017 (Part 1 of 2)

Happy Thursday to you!  I’m getting back in the swing of doing these things, so forgive the errors and late completion of last week’s #ThrowbackThursday post.  Hopefully this one ends up being on time and without missing elements haha!  I actually planned on posting another set for this week, but I wonder if the artist would have been a bit too similar right after k?d from last week.  I woke up this morning with this songs from THIS set stuck in my head, so I decided it would work well to shift this post upwards.  Not that I have a schedule or anything, but I usually am thinking all week of what I should post next heh.  And hey, you're on part one of the perhaps-too-long original post. Hit up part two when you're finished here, alright?  ANYWAY, here we go! He came back, and I was determined not to miss him this time:  Seven Lions played EDC Orlando 2017, and I was going to be damned sure I was watching.  Not only cause I missed him before, but also because of me being sort of an ambassador this year.  The guy behind The Big Gay Lion’s husband came with me this year, and I had high hopes that he’d enjoy this set seeing as how he took a liking to Above & Beyond (much to the surprise of the guy behind The Big Gay Lion!)... and, as it turns out, he wasn’t all that impressed!  *scoff!*  Haha, but he did take a liking to artists I love that I didn’t figure he would like.  We’ll get to those another week, but for now, let’s take a look at what I got:

Find this photo on Instagram | Find this photo on Facebook On my way to kineticFIELD for this show (spoilers?), this happened.  The husband of the guy behind The Big Gay Lion GREATLY preferred the space afforded to headliners in the VIP area, so if we were seeing a show as just us (without the other folks we were venturing with), we’d almost certainly go for VIP area so he could breath haha.  On the way in there were a bunch of big walls covered in sequins (like those pillows and shorts you see all over social media videos), which Insomniac clearly intended to inspire folks to play with, draw pictures, leave messages, etc.  Kind of a different version of the EDC Unity Wall, but less permanent I suppose.  Anyway, I attempted to draw a smiley face, in a space that didn’t impact anyone else’s visual musings... but it ended up looking a little more like a cross between Scream’s Ghostface and Marshmello haha.  This is a pic of it close up, about arms length away.

YouTube | Facebook | Instagram We found our spot, and I realized these were some of my first good views of kineticGAIA at night (and actually the first views from my own content on this blog, now that I think about it!), so I started taking video right away!  Seven Lions was kicking that good dubstep!  Only issues I have with the kineticFIELD VIP areas is that they put you so far away from “the action”.  Sure, it makes for some great camera angles, but I always feel “detached” from the vibe of the crowd. Seven Lions @ EDC Orlando 2017

Happy Thursday to you!  I’m getting back in the swing of doing these things, so forgive the errors and late completion of last week’s #ThrowbackThursday post.  Hopefully this one ends up being on time and without missing elements haha!  I actually planned on posting another set for this week, but I wonder if the artist would have been a bit too similar right after k?d from last week.  I woke up this morning with this songs from THIS set stuck in my head, so I decided it would work well to shift this post upwards.  Not that I have a schedule or anything, but I usually am thinking all week of what I should post next heh.  It's a big one, so this original post will be split into two individual, seperate ones to ease browsers strain (and stay within Tumblr's requirements).  ANYWAY, here we go!
