EUROVISION 2022 - MY TOP 10
Tumblr media
This blog may have been focused on a… different competition lately but I have not forgotten my origins!
I don’t usually post a “top 10” list because I tend to just accumulate all the competing songs I like on a playlist and have them all on repeat for months. Having come across so many other lists lately though, especially some I know I disagree with, it’s made me wonder where I would actually place them myself. So here we are, right before the most exciting week in Europe begins, I present to you my Eurovision 2022 top 10!
Disclaimer: I have not watched the rehearsal footage, so this is purely based off the songs and occasionally music videos. My final order will likely change once I see the staging.
1. France - Fulenn
A Celtic rave is everything I never knew I needed for Eurovision. Every time I hear this song I legitimately feel like I’m having an out of body experience. It frustrates me because I don’t actually want France as a country to win but… these guys are undeniably my favorites this year.
2. Lithuania - Sentimentai
This has all the class and beauty Barbara Pravi had last year except elevated because it’s in Lithuanian. Also the old-timey sound is very me, I loved Portugal last year too. I’m really hoping this translates well to the stage because if I could choose a winner it would be Monika.
3. Austria - Halo
Nothing gets my adrenaline rushing like a high tempo dance song. Also the music video vibes are immaculate. I admit to being very nervous for the staging though because not only does it need to have a TON of energy to match the song, it seems like a very difficult one to sing live.
4. Italy - Brividi
Italy is always in my top 5 and Mahmood was my number 1 in 2019 so really the only surprise here is that there were 3 other songs I liked better.
5. Sweden - Hold Me Closer
It makes me genuinely happy to see Sweden back on my top 10 after years of frustration with Melodifestivalen results. I was introduced to ESC through my “European home” Sweden, so you best bet I’ll be cheering for Cornelia to get a top 5 finish!
6. Cyprus - Ela
You know how I mentioned my attraction to dance songs? Yeah, except this one makes me feel like I’m dancing in the woods with nature spirits. Honestly if that isn’t the end goal when making music, what is even the point.
7. Netherlands - De Diepte
The emotion her voice emulates is unreal and is proof Dutch isn’t the harsh language some people make it out to be. Both a calming and beautiful piece of art that I’m confident S10 can carry by herself onstage.
8. Ukraine - Stefania
Somehow I always start out disliking Ukraine’s choice but then it grows on me as the weeks go by. You can probably expect this to move up a few spots by the time the semis come around because that’s 100% what happened last year.
9. Albania - Sekret
This was higher on my list originally but the more I listened the more I realized there was very little variation with the lyrics. It still made my top 10 though because, y’know, dance songs.
10. Armenia - Snap
This one caught me by surprise because it’s very different that what usually attracts me at Eurovision. I really do feel like I’m floating when listening to it though. It’s hard to say if that’s the music video’s influence or actually the songs relaxing tempo.
Special shoutout to Moldova, who very nearly made top 10 because they just make me unreasonably happy. That’s it for today’s list but you can bet I’ll be back this upcoming week for some more Eurovision hot takes!

This is probably the closest I’ve ever cut it, but here it is! My final thoughts on this year’s Eurovision entries!
I’m a little antsy about getting to see it this year. You know that post I made about having off on Tuesday and Thursday? Apparently my schedule’s getting changed, and now I don’t know. And I’m not gonna know about Saturday until Monday – I could easily be in work for the entire final. Here’s hoping adult obligations don’t keep me from my Europop! (And that I don’t even have this job this time next year, although my ideal job would probably keep me away from both semis… eh, win some lose some.)
I tried to find a sorter so I could rank these more thoroughly, because I’m bad at doing that by hand, but I didn’t find one, so I’ll be doing my usual thing of listing alphabetically by country and sorting each song into categories. My categories are thus:
Favorite: My number one pick for the year! Keep in mind that this doesn’t mean the song I think is objectively, artistically best, or even a song I think is going to escape the semi – this is just the song I get the most enjoyment out of. You’ll see why I felt the need to clarify that in a bit.
Love: If I ranked these, these would get the 2nd – 5th spots. I adore these songs, and would be more than happy to see any of them win.
Like: Didn’t quite make the top 5, but I still enjoy them a lot, and don’t want them getting booted out of the semi.
Okay: Nothing objectionable, but doesn’t mean much to me personally. I get a little bit of joy when I listen to it, then it fades immediately after.
Indifferent: I don’t care for this song at all; it’s just not in a style that means anything to me. If I still can’t remember how it goes after two months, that’s a bad sign.
What: This song’s existence confuses me too much to give it a proper placement.
Biased: My opinion on this song is based on factors that have nothing to do with its intent. (aka the “song reminded me of fandom” category. Haven’t used this in a while. Good to see its return!)
Yet again, the “Hate” category has been cut, since nothing actively gets on my nerves for the second year in a row! (…except one, maybe, but that one has enough background info that… well, you’ll know when you get to it.) Songs in “Like”, “Okay”, and “Indifferent” are prone from shifting up or down one within that range depending on how I’m feeling that day; “Favorite”, “Love”, “What”, and “Biased” are locked.
Ranking under the cut!
Albania: “Ktheju tokës” by Jonida Maliqi – I can feel the effort going into this one, but… nah, not my thing. It’s so rare for me to be invested in an Albanian entry, huh? Sorry, guys. Indifferent.
Armenia: “Walking Out” by Srbuk – I don’t know how to describe my feelings on this one, unfortunately, but I do really Like it. Maybe it’s the head-held-high attitude that has me interested?
Australia: “Zero Gravity” by Kate Miller-Heidke – If this doesn’t have a completely batshit performance, I’m gonna be so disappointed. Her voice is certainly impressive! But overall I’m going for an Okay on this one. It’s fine, but I think the stage show is going to outshine the actual song.
Austria: “Limits” by PÆNDA – Oof, this one is so close, yet so far. It reminds me of some artist I listen to a lot, though I can’t place it… but it just seems… thin? If it had something else to it, it could have really been something, but as it stands it doesn’t leave much impact. Indifferent, and that feels like such a waste. Good vocals, maybe if it had better music. (Then again, maybe the sparseness is the point… but if that’s the point it’s not for me)
Azerbaijan: “Truth” by Chingiz – I dunno, I just really like the imagery here, of a man arguing with himself about a relationship that he knows is damaging, but it’s just so much easier to deny it. I particularly like the “Shut up about it!” element, adds to the self-argument thing. I love the concept, and as a song it’s not half bad, either. Like!
Belarus: “Like It” by ZENA – Oh, fuck yeah! A good way to tell if I’m going to enjoy a song – are people insulting it by saying it sounds 15 – 20 years out of date? If so, then it’s probably exactly my jam! It’s such a fun song I can’t help but dance to, and sometimes that’s all I really need. I don’t just like it, I Love it! (oh that was terrible)
Belgium: “Wake Up” by Eliot – It’s a nice beat! But I don’t think it really stands out among the competition. It’s fair enough, there’s just so many other songs I like better than it this year. Okay.
Croatia: “The Dream” by Roko – OH MY GOD WHAT IS HE WEARING. Indifferent, this is not a good song, but god damn I am so looking forward to the stage show, this is going to be the cheesiest shit
Cyprus: “Replay” by Tamta – This sounds a lot like last year’s “Fuego”. This is mostly a good thing! I loved “Fuego”! But the repetition does slightly knock its chances to land in my top 5. Still a firm Like, though.
Czech Republic: “Friend of A Friend” by Lake Malawi – It’s not easy to follow up on the sheer campiness of last year’s “Lie to Me”, but Lake Malawi put forward their best effort, and I appreciate it highly! The song’s pure, campy fun that gets stuck in my head every time I listen to it. Like! …though I tend to overthink the lyrics. What, they hear someone fucking in the next apartment and the singer’s first instinct is to swear she’s only a friend? Jumping the gun a bit much there, dude? =P
Denmark: “Love Is Forever” by Leonora – It’s a really cute song, and I appreciate all the language changes. But realizing what it’s actually about it what landed it in Like – at first I thought it was just a love song, but then I realized the call for peace and optimism and it hit me in the fuzzies. I know the political, Important songs usually irritate the cheese out of me, but I feel like this one actually put effort into the music, rather than trying to ride on their message to guilt trip a vote out of you. I admit it’d probably be in the lower range of Like if I actually ranked these properly, but it really is a good song!
Estonia: “Storm” by Victor Crone – I love how this one gradually transitions from a country song to an EDM song; I always miss the exact part where it does it, it just flows so well. The optimistic lyrics are up my alley, too. It’s a really good one, and I hope it does well! Like!
Finland: “Look Away” by Darude feat. Sebastian Rejman – As a huge 90’s/2000’s European electronica fan who teethed on “Sandstorm” back when no one really knew what an Internet meme was, I nearly shat myself when I heard Darude was going to be representing Finland this year. I have no idea who Sebastian Rejman is, but after this song, I’m gonna have to look into him! This song has such a powerful beat that hits right in my gut, exactly what I love from my music. Firm Love!
France: “Roi” by Bilal Hassani – It’s a cute little thing that I can’t help but appreciate on some level! I think it’s just an Okay for balance purposes, but it creeps into Like on occasion. Also I find the singer weirdly cute. I dunno, as a package it’s just endearing!
Georgia: “Sul tsin iare” by Oto Nemsade – I can hear the passion in his voice, but… no, this isn’t for me at all. People who have read my Eurovision posts before know by now that slow + non-English tends to equal a death knell for me. Sorry, stupid American coming through. Indifferent.
Germany: “Sister” by S!sters – I hate the artist name so much, let me get that out of the way right now. As for the song itself… I don’t think I’d care for it at all if I didn’t have an association with it, but, well, here I am – this song is so, so easy to assign to the Hikawa twins from Bang Dream. Sisters in constant competition who don’t want to be? That’s their entire arc. Admittedly that’s mostly on Sayo’s part, which kind of ruins the duet aspect, but… damn it, if I can’t imagine them singing this together and playing their guitars while members of their bands provide the rest of the accompaniment, what’s the point of living? I’m going Biased on this one.
Greece: “Better Love” by Katerine Duska – I have no idea why I’m having such a hard time clicking with this song, but it’s just not working for me. I’m sure it’s objectively good, but it doesn’t do a damn thing for me. Indifferent.
Hungary: "Az én apám" by Joci Pápai – A returning artist from 2017! Too bad I didn’t care too much then and I really don’t care now. Just like Georgia, this just isn’t my style, and no amount of objective appreciation can fix the sad fact that songs like this always sink to the bottom of the pile for me. Indifferent.
Iceland: "Hatrið mun sigra" by Hatari  – …right. Oh boy. Okay. Look, when I first heard there was gonna be an industrial song in this year’s Eurovision, I was fucking pumped. This was one of the two songs I looked into before properly listening to the finished playlist, along with Finland. I’m not always into industrial music, but when it’s good, it’s fucking awesome! I started it up, heard the music, was so ready for this to be a real contender…
…aaaaand then the vocals started up. I don’t think this is just “I don’t like industrial growling”, they really do sound quite bad. I still love the instrumental, and the chorus is nice, too… but those verses. No.
And then I looked up those edgelord lyrics, and started hearing stuff about the band, and I am 110% convinced this is a troll song, firmly destined for the What category. This is what you send to Eurovision to let everyone know how much you hate Eurovision. I figured it had no chance of getting out of the semi, at least partially because of the feeling that if it does, the band will feel like they failed.
…but I keep seeing it rank high on others’ lists, so… I have no fucking clue what to expect from this one!
Ireland: “22” by Sarah McTernan – It’s pleasant! But that’s about it. I used to listen to folksy stuff like this as a kid, so I guess there’s some nostalgia for it… but I haven’t been into it in a long time. Low Okay.
Israel: “Home” by Kobi Marimi – I often hear jokes about how winning countries will send non-impacting garbage just so they don’t have to host the Contest two years in a row, and songs like this are exactly why I believe them. There’s nothing wrong with it, the singer’s voice might even be good, but as a whole package it’s just so boring. It feels like it’s so much longer than three minutes – such a slog to get through. Indifferent.
Italy: “Soldi” by Mahmood – Oh, I really like this one! The “come va” bit always burrows itself in my head, and I do respect how personal it seems to the singer, with the blending of cultures. (I know I don’t always respect the personal aspect, but I love when “personal” doesn’t have to mean “bland-ass acoustic guitar ballad”.) Like!
Latvia: “That Night” by Carousel – One for the bin of “I can’t remember how this goes”. There’s nothing wrong with it, it’s just so forgettable. I’m trying to find something about it that stands out to me, but… nah, it’s just mush. Indifferent.
Lithuania: “Run With The Lions” by Jurij Veklenko – Even more mush. I can remember bits of it, at least, but the bits I remember don’t mean anything to me. Indifferent.
Macedonia: “Proud” by Tamara Todevska – I know I normally crap on ballads, but… I think I heard this song at a time I really needed to. I love the self-acceptance message, as corny and played out as it can be. I Like this one, it’s sweet.
Malta: “Chameleon” by Michela – This came so, so close to my top 5! I really do love the hell out of it! Such a good walking song. Like, but could have so easily been a Love if not for its competition.
Moldova: “Stay” by Anna Odobescu – Oh no. This is the first year I haven’t been head-over-heels in love with the Moldovan entry, and I feel like such a jerk about it. They finally decide to take themselves seriously and send something with a lot of passion! …and all I can do is sit here disappointed! I’m sorry! Low Okay for the “objectively great, I’m sure, but not my genre” thing. I know a lot of people love it, but I don’t think I would have cared for it from any country, and it being Moldova is just disappointing for me. They can of course do whatever they want, and good for them if it works out, but let me pout in peace
Montenegro: “Heaven” by D mol – This is the most I’ve ever unironically liked a Montenegrin song since I started watching the Contest in 2014, as cold as a compliment that is. It’s cute! But cute is really all it has going for it. I’m going with Okay, though that’s mainly from comparing it to everything else I’ve heard from Montenegro; if another country sent this, it could have easily landed lower.
Netherlands: “Arcade” by Duncan Laurence – I don’t get it. I know a lot of people have been heaping praise on this… but I don’t get it, and I feel like the arcade metaphor is insanely cheesy for the mood it’s going for. I can’t take it as seriously as it seems to want me to. Indifferent.
Norway: “Spirit In The Sky” by KEiiNO – I adore this song. Great music, great imagery, I feel like it’s gonna be a good stage show! The joiking took me a bit to get used to, but once I did, I do feel it adds a lot to the song. I cannot wait to see this song performed! Love! In a better world where I have taste, this song would be my Favorite, and even as it stands I’m pretty sure it’s my favorite song that has a chance in hell of actually winning. But as for my actual Favorite… we’ll get to that later.
Poland: “Fire Of Love (Pali Sie)” by Tulia – Little confession for those who were around in 2014 – I regret choosing “We Are Slavic” as my favorite song back then. I admit that I wasn’t really taking the Contest seriously and was somewhat choosing based on meme potential. Whoops. But the good news is, this song proves that I wasn’t entirely going on meme potential. We’re taking traditional Polish singing far more seriously this time, and I still like it! It’s a unique little song that stands out in a good way, and I love the shout singing. I’ve heard complaints about it, but I got used to it right away. Maybe because I’ve been listening to shouty rave stuff for such a long time? I’m used to this style of singing, and pleased to hear it working with a more traditional musical backdrop. Like!
Portugal: "Telemóveis" by Conan Osiris – Haaaaaa oh my god what the fuck. By all rights, this should be dumped in the “What” category and never talked about again… but this weird little song charmed me somehow. I have a bad history with never remembering Portugal’s entries, with them making so little of an impression on me that I always forget if they skipped 2016 or if their entry that year was just that boring. And as weird as it is, I don’t feel like it’s quite strange enough for me to dump it in the same category that I tend to reserve for unapologetic camp. So, you know what, for breathing some bizarre life into a country I wrote off a long time ago, I’m giving it an Okay. I flirted with the idea of putting it in Like just by comparison with everything else the country has sent, but that implies I actually want to see this in the final, and I’m not gonna go that far.
Romania: “On A Sunday” by Ester Peony – By sound, I think it’s just an Okay, but a respectably placed one. I do like it more than, say, Ireland or Moldova. But I’ve been listening to it a lot recently… mainly for shipping reasons. (JyushiHomu, for the curious.) But I also decided it was a fine song even before I made that connection, so I don’t think it belongs in Biased? I may be shooting low on this one because I’m afraid of my shipping goggles impairing my judgment. Maybe it really is a low Like, I don’t know. I’ll leave it here. It’s a nice song!
Russia: “Scream” by Sergey Lazarev – Oh, man, I was so hyped to see that Sergey was back! “You Are The Only One” was my favorite entry from 2016, and I’ve listened to his English Best Of thousands of times!
…so imagine my surprise to hear that it’s a ballad. Keep in mind my usual tastes in music, and my other favorite Sergey songs – “Take It Off”, “Stumblin’”, “In My Lonely Life”. I love him for the fun club nonsense. I’m shallow, I know. But then I managed to shake off my biases and listen to “Scream” for what it is and not just what it could be, and… yeah, it’s a good song. Sergey’s got good producers and a great voice. It’s still a Like. But I feel like if they gave this song to someone I didn’t recognize, it’d land lower.
Not like the other competitor here who’s returning from 2016…
San Marino: “Say Na Na Na” by Serhat – Oh hell yeah. When I first saw that Serhat was back, after I stopped laughing, I clicked it fully expecting some camp bait to throw at Karamatsu, drop in the What category, and spend the next two months gleefully taking the piss out of.
…that is not what happened. Instead, I instantly fell in love with it. Serhat may not make a convincing Casanova, but he sure as hell knows how to party! This feels ripped right from a 2000’s Europop act that leans on disco energy, and that is exactly my type of thing. I’m so sad that this is probably going to get stuck in the semi, because I am so wildly in love with it. I can’t believe that out of the two returning artists from 2016, I fell in love with Serhat, not Sergey! Instant Favorite, I accept my place as the only person in the world who actually wants to see this win. Party energy, optimistic lyrics, how am I supposed to put this below anything else?
Still throwing it at Kara, though
Serbia: “Kruna” by Nevena Božović – Remember what I said about songs I forget the instant they end? Yeah, this is one of ‘em. I just can’t think of anything to say here. Indifferent.
Slovenia: “Sebi” by Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl – Kinda reminds me of a forgettable t.A.t.U album track. That’s not really a high compliment. I do like the vocals, but it’s one of those songs I can appreciate in the moment but don’t really seek out actively. Okay, and a low one at that.
Spain: “La Venda” by Miki – Just typing the title for this one is making me want to party! God this is a fun one to listen to. Party song about not being a bigoted dick! What’s not to Love? Looking forward to an entertaining stage show on this one!
Sweden: “Too Late For Love” by John Lundvik –  …you know that feeling when you think you should really love a song more than you do? There’s nothing wrong with it, I actually do almost like it… but I don’t seem to adore it like so many other people do, and I feel like a jerk about it. Okay because I don’t love it as much as everyone else does, but I won’t be upset to see it perform well. I don’t know what it is that isn’t resonating with me! I’m sorry! It’d probably get a Like if I wasn’t being influenced by other rankings!
Switzerland: “She Got Me” by Luca Hänni – Oh, this is a nice, fun little thing. I think I like it for a lot of the same reasons I like “Friend of A Friend”. It just sounds like the people recording it are having such a good time! Like!
United Kingdom: “Bigger Than Us” by Michael Rice – Nope, sorry. Grand ballad, yay, good for it, not my thing at all, nothing that stands out. Indifferent.

Make Like a Tree is a quintessention of travels expressed in music and photography created by Sergey Onischenko - vagabond from Ukraine who is touring a round the world and spreading his indie-folk tunes with a touch of non-conformism and Beat Generation ideas and exhibiting his minimalistic landscape photography taken in omnifarious places during his journeys.
Each concert is played with new members and all songs are created and recorded in different parts of the world. Experiments with sounds and collaborations with audience can turn one-man-band in a duo or in quite a large improvising ensemble.
“Mothernight” is a third album created by Make Like a Tree. It's a 10 track indie-ambient folk album that is a quintessention of 3 year world journey around the world. Every song is a collaboration with a new artist who Sergey has met and involved into Make Like a Tree project during his wanderings around Japan, Kenya, Tanzania, Russia, Ukraine, Austria, Italy, Norway, Catalonia, Armenia. The name of the album is inspired by the eponymous novel of Kurt Vonnegut that describes a perfect example of “citizen of nowhere”. The name refers to the idea that modern society is lost in the middle of the night without any directions to the place where we came from. Night scrapps all the shells and ripping off masks that accrue to our faces makes us look more real . "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be."
Album has been self recorded in a portable home studios in Japan on the suburbs of Tokyo and on beautiful island of Zanzibar polished by the ocean breeze and heavy sunlight of Tanzania. Mastering is done by Thomas Meidell in Metropolis Studios in Oslo, Norway. Cover is done by the japaneese painter Youji Otsuki.
This album unites many nations and makes the borders vanish facing the power of music.

History of collaborations
1. Under Water
Make Like a Tree & Owl Clarinet - clarinet, sax, akai ewi (Ukraine)
https://www.facebook.com/owl.clarinet/
“Under Water”  is a first track that opens the album. It was composed and recorded on island of Zanzibar and then featured Sergey Savenko aka Owl Clarinet  - clarinet and synth music genius from Ukraine. He added beautiful melodies of clarinet, sax and akai ewi. I met Sergey long time ago seeing him performing with other bands in clubs of my hometown Kharkiv where we all used to grow up. Some solos that he played from stage  got carved in my memory and when coming back home from his shows these melodies were always on repeat in my mind. We played many shows together and it was always a dream to make a record with his tunes. Finally when i came back from my long journey home we could make our collaboration happen. This songs represents the feeling of being united with someone without having any reasons. Being “under water” with other person means finding out that you have something in common that makes you feel a strong connection even without knowing each other well. It happens a lot when you travel and you meet new people and after couple of hours spent together you feel like you have known each other for ages. Being “under water” means being friends.
2.  Sad Baobab Song
Make Like a Tree  & Mt. Mélodie - Ebow, Moog (Norway)
https://www.facebook.com/mtmelodie/
Long time ago i was listening tons of new music every day trying to follow all brand new released albums. Now I'm more into listening on repeat bands that I’m already in love with. Back then I found a great band “The Samuel Jackson 5” from Norway. They are still in my playlist since i have heard them more than 10 years ago. Once they came to Ukraine and I was in a front raw watching them. They were not only genius and talented musicians but also a very humble and cool guys with who we were hanging out after the show and I even managed to make an interview with them. After bunch of years I visited Oslo and I met with Thomas Meidell - guitar player of “The Samuel Jackson 5” in his studio for an impro collaboration that ended up in a small experimental 3 tracks EP. I really enjoyed playing with him and seeing the way he works in a studio. I proposed him to make a song for my future EP and also do a mastering of the entire album. I recorded Sad Baobab Song in sunny Kenya and then sent it to Thomass into snowy Norway. Literally from summer to winter. I feel that it added some nice contrast and shape to the whole idea of the song. After one of the shows someone asked me: Why is your baobab sad?”. And my reply was: “The baobab from the song is sad because he has never seen snow and he realized that he does not have a chance to see it for his entire life.”
3. City is a cage
Make Like a Tree & Nick Acorne - Synth (Ukraine, Austria)
http://nickacorne.com/
In spite of being recorded on a sunny Zanzibar island this song had a dark mood. The name of the song speaks for itself. It happens sometimes to me that if I stay too long in a concrete jungles for too long time I start feeling that I miss a fresh air. Running away to the woods always helps to recharge inner batteries and then continue struggle with a city monster. I know Nick for ages as we have been part of the same underground music scene of Kharkiv. We played many shows sharing same stage. Now he lives in Graz, Austria and sometimes comes to play a show with me if I’m touring somewhere nearby. He added this perfect melancholy  mood to the song and from being light grey in became much more contrast with his sounds.
4. Back to myself
Make Like a Tree & Marc Egea - Hurdy Gurdy (Spain, Catalonia)
http://www.marcegea.com/
I met Marc Egea during our amazing tour for 1 month from Moscow to Tuva Republic as a part of MuzEnergo Tour.  It was a crazy adventure as we shared space of 1 bus with 10 other bands from all over the world and we were literally living in that bus during the tour as getting from city to city in Russia is not as easy and fast. Marc plays amazing instrument Hurdy Gurdy and he is a real genius! We played couple of shows together and making a record together was my dream for many years already. I recorded this song In Zanzibar and sent it to Marc in Catalonia where he put layers of his beautiful instrument. This song is about idea that you can search for yourself everywhere in the world - look under every stone, go deep underwater, climb the highest mountain but in the end you will realize that you were always very close but never looked in a right direction as the only place where you can find yourself is inside.
5.   In the middle
Make Like a Tree & Takahiro Kido - Piano, Synth & Yuki Murata - Piano  (Japan)
http://fleursy.com/yukimurata/
http://fleursy.com/takahirokido/
While touring Japan in 2017 I was very happy to meet amazing musicians Takahiro Kido and Yuki Murata. I knew their music since a long time ago and meeting them in person was a great gift for me. We had a nice walk around Kichijoji area in Tokyo and enjoyed first spring days. Takahiro Kido  added some beautiful Piano and Synth tunes and Yuki Murata played amazing piano solos. The track “In the middle” represents a description of human’s life as a book where every day is a new page that we can fill with beautiful moments. But some of us are forgetting about possibility to turn the pages and they got stuck in the middle of the book with rewriting every day on the same page that leads to unhappiness. This song is a reminder to myself about importance of not  carrying many things that we don't need anymore from past days and being strong enough to turn the pages and enjoy freshness of life form a new page.
6. To the sea
Make Like a Tree & Owen Ross - Synth, Effects (USA)
www.owenrossmusic.com
If to believe scientists - sea is a place where we all are coming from. And there is always something special in a journey home. I always have this special happy buzz inside of me when I know I'm going to the direction of the big water. And after a long journey when you step  on the beach and the first sip of fresh air comes to my lungs - that's something hard to describe with words. I love that feeling. So i decided to make a try and express this touch of the sea in a song. We met with Owen Ross in one of the clubs of Berlin playing show together. When i heard his music I was totally amazed by his sounds and an idea of collaboration was born straight away. Owen added life to this song with his beats and synth and something that i really like in his own music. Let’s call it a fresh breeze of the ocean.
7.   I'm so happy here without you
Make Like a Tree & Akie Doi - Violin (Japan)
http://www.jiri-official.com/
My life in Tokyo definitely would not be so fun and great without knowing Akie. She is a multi talented musician and yoga teacher and for me she became a great companion to explore suburbs and secret places of Tokyo. We performed together couple of times and felt a strong music connection like an electricity shock between two people. We decided to make this record together to memorize this feeling. Special thanks to Paradise Air Art  Residency that gave me a roof above my head where i could work on my new songs. The provided living space used to be a Love Hotel in past. It inspired me a lot and i decided to make a happy song about sad person who is looking for love happiness in other people and in the end character of my song realizes that the source of real happiness and love could be found only inside of us but not outside.
8. Polar Explorer
Make Like a Tree  & Danya Alshevsky - Piano (Russia)
http://hyggelig.bandcamp.com/
I wrote this song in a beautiful beach of Bali and then never had a chance to record it. Finally after playing it in many shows i made the final recording of it in Zanzibar in my home portable studio. This song is about a traveller who had a dream to see the center of the South Pole. He goes on a solo risky journey with dozen of dogs and in his pocket he has a photo of the girl who he is in love with. When the weather is extremely bad and everything goes wrong he takes out the picture and while he looks at the picture it  makes him feel better and motivates him to move on. The trip goes really tough for him and due to the lack of food he starts eating his dogs one by one. He does not want to stop his journey and by the time he finally reaches the center of the South Pole he is alone because he had to eat all his dogs. He does not have enough food to survive on the way back but he is not giving up and trying to get to the civilization totally exhausted and starving. The only thing that keeps him alive is a picture of the girl that he is constantly looking at and it gives him power. When he is almost about to die from exhaustion he eats the picture of the girl and with a final effort he manages to reach the shelter and survive. Danya Alshevsky  who helped me to make this song more moody and deep is a frontman of a russian band Hyggelig. We met in december 2012 exactly at the day when everyone was announcing that it's gonna be the end of the world. It was in his snowy town Nizhny Novgorod and we played a show together and who knows maybe we were the ones who saved the world with music. I'm a big fan of Hyggelig band and making a collaboration with Danya was a big pleasure for me.
9.  Beautiful day
Make Like a Tree & Gabriele Blandini - Trumpet (Italy)
https://www.facebook.com/gabrieleblandiniofficialpage/
Song was recorded in Nairobi  capital of Kenya. It was just my voice and guitar but i had a feeling that something is missing in it. After some time i realized that i want to have a trumpet in this song. I was looking for someone who could make a perfect solo. After Africa I came to Puglia  - south region of Italy - place where people really know how feel happiness of life in every day. And a kind of a miracle happened. We met with Gabriele Blandini coincidentally on beautiful streets of city Galatina and after we had a chat with him my friend told me that it's a trumpet player of Manu Chao. It happened to be that i heard Gabriele’s solos far before meeting him in person while listening to music of Manu Chao. Some time later we met in a PART studio and Gabriele added beautiful trumpet solos to my song. It was a perfect match. It was exactly what i wanted to hear in the song. Seems like Gabriele took the music that i had in my head and put it out of his trumpet.
10. Hope
Make Like a Tree & Sleepless - Synth (Armenia)
https://www.facebook.com/Sleeplessmusic1/
I was playing concert in Yerevan in summer 2017 and Arman Less aka Sleepless invited me to his home studio to make a record together. It was a great time as we have done a great job and also i met all his lovely family and get to know his music better. We used one of the beautiful fresh tracks by Sleepless and I added some vocals to the song. It’s a last song on the album but was actually the first one that was recorded and got to the album compilation. It's about eternal life of hope that never dies.

I've been summoned!
Tumblr media
Well, not really, @crossroadswrite tagged me to answer some questions. But same diff, right?
Rules: Answer 11 questions, ask 11 new questions (if ya want), and tag 11 people.
Original questions:
1. Favorite tabletop game?
Pathfinder, I think. I also kinda like Das Monster aus der Spätvorstellung(the monster from the late night showing, roughly, I couldn't find an official English title for this one), IF the participants are serious about playing instead of just fucking around. I get invested v.v
2. Favorite fizzy drink?
Cola, though if I can get a still water, I'd rather take that.
3. Snacks you smuggle into the cinema?
I've actually never done that?
4. What’s your stance on milk, and on dairy products, in general?
One can have a stance on dairy? X3 I guess I'm pro-milk, though I'm also slightly sensitive to it and have to pick the lactose free variant at times.
5. Have you ever travelled outside your country?
Yes, a couple hours to Austria when my parents took me to the Zugspitze and a one-week class trip my last year at school to see Danzig in Poland.
6. Favorite mobile app?
I love all my apps equally. (But I currently really love ZArchiver, because it lets me unpack podfic in zip-files directly on my phone without having to start my laptop. It's awesome!)
7. Tell us about one of your hobbies?
I tend to flit between things a lot and fixate for times, like reading, video games, currently I'm playing Pokemon ad nauseam. I like crafting, too, basically with anything but I'm especially fond of beads, they are really versatile. You can make little figurines, all kinds of jewelry with the right technique and jewel cases, I once made a bonsai as a birthday present, you know these miniature trees? I haven't done much lately, you need a lot of concentration for beadwork and my job has been really trying. The last figurines I did where two fruit dragons of maybe 5cm, each took me a weekend. Currently I'm working on a simple bracelet, it's not difficult but without concentration rather slow going. I also might have been distracted by my discovery of chainmail, I haven't done that yet, because the materials so far seem a bit pricey, but it looks really cool for being seemingly easy.
8. Can you cook well, or can you only do simple stuff?
What counts as simple? I can follow recipes, but I'm not creative enough to make up my own. I don't really cook a lot, though, because I find cooking for myself depressing.
9. Take the letters of your first name and list names of characters that start with each letter of your name.
Okay, this was really hard:
Alexander Lightwood (Shadowhunters (TV))
Leroy Jethro Gibbs (NCIS)
Eggsy Unwin (Kingsman) (I know, his name's technically Gary, but I can't find anyone else with E :P)
Natasha Romanoff
Altin, Otabek - screw you, this counts
10. Three first songs that come up when you put your playlist on shuffle?
Since I have a couple different playlists, I put my entire phone on shuffle:
Even the Light is an Illusion (podfic by Liannabob - Mizzy)
Radio-Friendly Pop Song (Matt Fishel)
Holding On To Heaven (Nickelback)
11. Do you like the rain?
I do.
Phew, now new questions:
1. Are you ticklish?
2. Dogs or cats?
3. Would you prepare vegetables with a microwave?
4. Do you like taking the train (or you country's chosen mode of cross country/intercity public transportation)?
5. Snakes?
6. How many of your relatives get a Happy Birthday call/SMS/chosen form of communication from you?
7. What do you consider a Guilty Pleasure of yours?
8. What's your favorite time of the year? (season, holiday, month, whatever)
9. Licorice?
10. Take the letters of your first name and list names of characters that start with each letter of your name.
11. Snakes with hats?
And I tag

Eurovision 2016 vs. 2017
Ok I know I’m already a little extra about Eurovision, but I really wanted to make this comparison between last year’s entries vs this year’s, mostly to organize my thoughts about the 2017 contest. Eurovision mutuals feel free to hmu with your opinions! (my top out of the 2016 and 2017 entries for each country will be bolded) (Also I stole this idea from @eurosong )
Albania: Fairytale vs World
Alright I think we can all agree that both of these songs should’ve skipped the Albanian to English revamp. Both were pretty mediocre in English, but I think I can get behind Lindita as being the better vocalist here.
Armenia: LoveWave vs Fly with Me
Will Fly with Me make any of my Spotify playlists? No probably not. But I have to appreciate Armenia’s attempt to produce an entry that honors both Armenian and East Asian cultural elements. It’s going to be one of the more interesting acts in Kyiv that’s for sure.
Australia: Sound of Silence vs Don’t Come Easy
This decision was pretty easy, and not because I was a fan of Dami or her act. Don’t Come Easy is ridiculously bland and just makes me kind of sad watching it.
Austria: Loin d’ici vs Running on Air
Good thing we can count on Austria for songs with cutesy lyrics that don’t cut deep in any way whatsoever. Running on Air however is considerably less repetitive than Loin d’ici. Though I wanted to like Loin d’ici for the sole fact it was in French, the children’s book-esque staging and lyrics left me bitter it made it to the finals.
Azerbaijan: Miracle vs Skeletons
Ok so I originally really liked the video for Miracle and had Samra easily in my top 10. Then she performed it live at the semis and made me want to put my ears out of their misery- one of my biggest ESC 2016 disappointments. If Dihaj can sing Skeletons live better than my cat could, it’s the clear winner of the two.
Belarus: Help you fly vs Historyja majgo zyccia
The most clear choice I made on this entire list. To me Naviband brings such a modern folk feel to Eurovision that we haven’t seen from anyone else this year and their use of Belarusian saved Slavic language from extinction in the contest. Maybe if ESC had approved Ivan’s live wolves last year I would’ve felt more nostalgic towards his act too?
Belgium: What’s the pressure vs City Lights
City Lights hands down. Belgium decided in one year that they decided to advance 4 decades in musical style. I guess what was cringiest about What’s the Pressure to me was that it couldn’t quite decide what era it belonged to. If you’re going to bring disco garbage to Eurovision at least commit to it.
Bulgaria: If love was a crime vs Beautiful Mess
Honestly, If Love was a Crime’s performance in the finals shocked me. I think its upbeat style was superior to Bulgaria’s entry this year, though I have to admit I wasn’t a fan. Possibly because it took me 6 months to  figure out that she was saying  дай ми любовта in Bulgarian as opposed to incomprehensible English.
Croatia: Lighthouse vs My Friend
Feel like I’m comparing apples to oranges here, but for me the bronchitis, hair and wardrobe disaster edges out the Italian opera/English pop worst of both worlds act.
Cyprus: Alter Ego vs Gravity
Not gonna lie, I still listen to Alter Ego. Back in 2016 I knew it wasn’t the style for Eurovision, but at least it was ORIGINAL. Gravity isn’t as bad as the Youtube comments would suggest, but it’s definitely a step back for Cyprus when it comes to originality.
Czechia: I Stand vs My Turn
Both are garbage. But props to Czechia for finally qualifying.
Denmark: Soldiers of Love vs Where I Am
A bit of a hard choice. I’m always down for a boy band though, and to me, Lighthouse X beats out the screecher from Down Under.
Estonia: Play vs Verona
Unpopular opinion: Juri wasn’t ripped off. Though I didn’t want him in the grand finals, he’s still better than the toxic duo Estonia promoted this year.
Finland: Sing it away vs Blackbird
At least Sing it Away was fun ?  Finland is not performing to the best of their potential. Regardless of whether Blackbird’s “staging is amazing”, its lack of climax and generally disappointing vocals will 100% keep it in the semis.
France: J’ai cherché vs Requiem
Frankly both are incredible and Eurovision is one of the only things I love about France. (Requiem would’ve been my winner had it not been for the English chorus no one asked for)
Georgia: Midnight Gold vs Keep the Faith
Unpopular opinion #2: Keep the Faith is in my Top 3 for 2017. I really do not understand the hate Tako gets- I think her song has an amazing message and outstanding vocals (that will hopefully be a little less screechy in the semis). When this song inevitabley does not qualify for the finals, I will lose hope in ESC.
Germany: Ghost vs Perfect Life
Unpopular opinion #57584948: I vibed with Ghost. Is it my proudest confession? nope. Perfect Life SCREAMS Black Smoke 2015 and we know how that went.
Greece: Utopian Land vs This is Love
Utopian Land was gross, but its one saving grace was the Greek lyrics. This is Love sounds like it came off the credits of a live action Disney film that flopped hard. That being said, I’m not buying Greece’s “safe” selection to get back into the finals this year.
Hungary: Pioneer vs Origo
I’m convinced that if I had smoked 5 packs a day and hit the gyms leading up to Eurovision 2016, I could’ve out-performed Freddie. Origo isn’t exactly the shining beacon of Eurovision multilingualism for me, but the Balkan musical elements help detract from the awkward voice and rap.
Iceland: Here them calling vs Paper
Here them calling didn’t deserve the finals and neither does Paper. Paper’s lyrics are not “deep” “next level” or “misunderstood”, there were way better lyrics to be written to speak up about emotional health. trust me.
Ireland: Sunlight vs Dying to Try
Honestly I don’t care enough to take a strong stance. I don’t know how Ireland did it in the 90′s because now they are ~Forgettable~
Israel: Made of Stars vs I Feel Alive
I loved Hovi. His song and vocal abilities were incredible. Personally would’ve ditched the unnecessary ring prop/backup dancers that killed the live performance. Israel is another country that rarely fails me at Eurovision, and I’m excited for Imri Ziv this year.
Italy: No degree of separation vs Occidentali’s Karma
No Degree of Separation was one of the songs that gradually grew on me last year and I was rooting for Francesca in the finals. Her nervous stage presence is what puts Occidentali’s Karma on top for me. Occidentali’s Karma really embodies the spirit of Eurovision this year, but I’m curious to see how Francesco deals with the clunky verse two black hole.
Latvia: Heartbeat vs Line
Didn’t think Heartbeat deserved the finals last year but it sure as hell deserved it more than Line does. Line is not cool creepy, it’s just creepy. I’m predicting another sub-par year for the Baltics.
Lithuania: I’ve been waiting for this night vs Rain of Revolution
Despite my apathy towards the Baltic countries, Donny was by far the act that grew on me the most last year. I might’ve reluctantly subjected myself to I’ve Been Waiting for This Night only a handful of times before the finals, but I must admit I’ve listened to it since. 12 points from me for the flip on stage.
Macedonia: Dona vs Dance Alone
KALIOPI IS MY QUEEN AND I CRIED WHEN EUROPE CRUSHED HER HOPES AND DREAMS
Malta: Walk on water vs Breathlessly
Props for performing Walk on Water while prego? Also, Breathlessly is arguably the most boring ballad of 2017
Moldova: Falling Stars vs Hey, Mamma!
The only redeeming quality of Hey, Momma! is that Epic Sax Guy is back. Luckily, that’s one more redeeming quality than Moldova’s last entry had.
Montenegro: The Real Thing vs Space
I refuse to even rank these because both are total shit and Montenegro should go back to producing cultural gems or just drop out of Eurovision.
Netherlands: Slow down vs Lights and Shadows
Have to go with Douwe Bob on this one. Slow Down was one of my favorites all of last year and The Netherlands have proven that country can work at Eurovision. Lights and Shadows could rival it for me, but this depends a lot on the staging and live performance (I wasn’t a fan of the artistic choices made in the video).
Norway: Icebreaker vs Grab the Moment
Not sure how I feel about the bridge to Grab the Moment, but almost anything is better than Icebreaker.
Poland: Color of your life vs Flashlight
Polish Jesus brought life to Eurovision last year and I am forever grateful. Flashlight is another boring balad but will do well bc Poland.
Portugal: Há um mar que nos separa vs Amar pelos dois
My buddy Salvador got lucky here because although I enjoy the song, his stage presence is by far the most uncomfortable I’ve seen. I’ll probably close my eyes for the semis.
Romania: Moment of Silence vs Yodel It!
1. Romania’s disqualification last year was a tragedy 2. No one asked for Rap/Yodel fusion and it’s as shitty as it sounds
Russia: You are the only one vs Flame Is Burning
Glad Russia viewed using a disabled person as a shield against booing as higher of a priority than sending another quality act this year
San Marino: I didn’t know vs Spirit of the Night
At least Serhat was bad in an endearing kind of way. San Marino needs to stick with the ironically awful acts.
Serbia: Shelter vs In Too Deep
Shelter is the superior performance here, but I’m still waiting for another Marija Serifovic
Slovenia: Blue and red vs On My Way
I’ll take the Slovenian Taylor Swift knockoff over the Sloevnian sexual predator any day. I’m also ashamed to be Slovenian.
Spain: Say yay! vs Do It for Your Lover
Do It for Your Lover is bad but not
that
bad. Say Yay! hurt my ears right at the first chorus. An entirely Spanish entry would be my preference, but apparently the Spanish jury doesn’t feel the same way.
Sweden: If I were sorry vs I Can’t Go On
I guess I never got hit by the Frans train last year. Sweden sends the most basic, mainstream songs to Eurovision year after year and somehow does well. These two songs are no exception.
Switzerland: Last of our kind vs Apollo
Anything over Last of our Kind and whatever the hell her dance was. On the other hand, maybe it was the kind of comedic relief we need out of Eurovision. I’m personally not a fan of Apollo but I think it will probably do well.
Ukraine:1944 vs Time
Hard choice, but in the end, 1944 was a winner. I was a huge fan of 1944 all the way (mostly because of the Tatar) but I am also a fan of Time. In a year with so many ballads (both good and bad), Time will certainly stick out and I wish them the best.
United Kingdom:You’re not alone vs Never Give Up on You
You’re Not Alone was at least cute and cheesy. Never GIve Up on You is only a cheesy and fake ballad. Both songs manage to get stuck in your head, but not necessarily in a good way.

Pinoy Akapela in 2017
Vocal group performance has persisted to be a style for the Filipino mainstream audiences to listen to, to watch, and eventually to imitate. It really has been more accessible for aspiring a cappella solo singers and groups to join in the loop, find their own tricks and knacks, and to truly just have fun and share what they have worked on -- may it be by simply arranging covers, sharing them online, or going as far as getting into tireless months of training and rehearsing to compete in local and international competitions. And what has probably generated such a bustling and astounding contemporary a cappella atmosphere in 2017 would be the independent labors of the unceasing up-and-coming groups to further accelerate in honing their craft; and their renown. Filipino morale in contemporary a cappella has just gotten ever lustrous this year.
Here is an overview of some of the milestones achieved by these who have made this 2017 a remarkable one (based on my Manila-based radar, hehe), casting the affirming imprint that contemporary a cappella is also a Filipino thing:
Acapellago’s international and local stardom. The group has gone a long and exciting way, highlighting this 2017 with their First Prize and Audience awards at the Vokal Total 2017 International Festival in Graz, Austria. Beating other groups from Europe, their powerful repertoire includes their own arrangements of Ain’t No Other Man (Christina Aguilera, arr. by Happy), Conga (Gloria Estefan feat. Miami Soundmachine, arr. by Acapellago), Safe and Sound (Taylor Swift, arr. by Josh), and Queen of the Night (Whitney Houston/Lani Misalucha, arr. by Happy)
Tumblr media
(photo from Facebook)
The streak continued on with the group producing and launching singles under Viva Records Corporation. Their first single is Peroplano, joined a few months later by some Christmas songs which are now available on Spotify. Performances here and outside the country continued to grow in number, as well as their fans. Always trending with their video posts, Acapellago knows how to keep their music-making active and their audiences entertained, not forgotten. They have given pop and novelty a new (and challenging) style to be enjoyed, giving viewers their fun takes of Titibo-tibo by Moira dela Torre and Pasok mg Suki. The group closes the year with more recognition under their belt given by one of OPM’s sought after award-giving bodies, The Awit Awards: Best Vocal Arrangement for Stars are Aligned with Jimmy Marquez, The People’s Choice Award for Best Group Recording Artist, and the International Citation Award for their accomplishments at the Vokal Total A Cappella Competition in Graz. Awe-inspiring, Acapellago! More power to you, Mitch, Almond, Josh, Bogart, and Happy!
Competitions not only help in finding the finest in the a cappella community, and giving the opportunity for groups to develop their skills. They also, on the surface, give contemporary a cappella an identity to be raved about. COMBI A CAPPELLA BATTLE NATION made this hype big this year, creating this riff-off type of battle ground for the finalists at the Trinoma Mall in Quezon City last October 21. Finalists include previous competition winners like Astrafellas (2016 Akapela Open Champion), ConChords (2016 Akapela Open 1st runner up), GVBS (2016 Akapela Open Finalist), Musikality, Music Beats, and The Playlist, whose some members have joined Akapela Open as well. The brand’s ambassadors Acapellago performed, including 2016′s winner, Phisix (Akapela Open Finalist). Confident and promising when it comes to musicianship and musicality, Jowin, Coleen, Nica, Jec and Val of ConChords, all students from the UP College of Music, took home the badge. They performed their arrangements of You Give Love a Bad Name (Bon Jovi), Greedy (Ariana Grande, arr. by Lancelle Nantes), and a Moana Medley. GVBS came in 2nd, and Astrafellas came in 3rd.

Another competition that featured the current performance practice of popular a cappella singing sans the use of individual microphones would be the MBC National Choral Competition. Aside from their performance of a folk piece and the contest piece (by The CompanY's Moy Ortiz), part of each finalist’s repertoire must contain a “novelty performance” -- that is, having each choir’s own arrangement of a popular song or a medley of songs, complete with choreography, without a conductor in the middle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

The winners for the open category are Coro Obcento (Grand Champion) followed by the Oratory Boys Chorus, Tarlac Chamber Choir, and South Cotabato Chorale. Original tunes such as from the likes of Ricky Martin, Little Mix, Gwen Stefani, and Bon Jovi were heard in the competition, complete with exhilarating dance moves and even acrobatics. Flexibility and gusto in performing various styles of singing are really thrilling to know about our continuously evolving choral community! Mabuhay ang korong Pilipino!
As I mentioned earlier, persistence is such a crucial key when it comes to making a difference, or pursuing another opportunity to having a breakthrough. Pinopela, the Baguio-based group who has been together since the beginning of the Akapela Open Competition in 2013, has continued to make the rounds in performing especially for corporate events. This year has been quite busier for the group, despite some changes in their membership, as they performed for local and foreign delegates in the various events of the ASEAN Summit. Capping off the year is their prestigious win at the Hongkong International A Cappella Contest, leading other performances from Japan, Hongkong, Taiwan, and Mainland China. They bagged 2 awards - Best Presentation and the recognition as the Champion. Their repertoire includes Salute (Little Mix) and a Power Hits Medley which includes, Say You’ll Never Let Me Go, Uptown Funk, Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing, Hey Momma, Salute and Can’t Hold Us. These were arranged by the group’s resident arranger, Ryan Vincent Lamaroza. Congratulations and thank you for your will and courage, Pinopela!

All male group Ten Thousand also went out of the country to compete at the 2017 Incheon Airport International Competition. Thank you for continuously representing the country and spreading our enthusiasm and presence in this field of performance! Just like being promoters of the Ricola brand through this jingle:
Tumblr media
https://web.facebook.com/RicolaPhilippines/videos/1012797868860759/
PhiSix, another all-male group which was last year’s winner at the Combi Nation Vocal Battle, bagged the first prize at the 2017 ACaChamps in Singapore held in July. The group was followed in 2nd place by Ten Thousand, who also won Best in Vocal Percussion. Pinoys certainly have begun warming up overseas. Congratulations, guys!
Tumblr media
A lot of schools, universities and companies seem to have involved more intensified a cappella singing competitions in their events especially this past Christmas season.
I might have missed out on other events where contemporary a cappella has been highlighted, so please let me know! :D
Here is a wishlist for the coming 2018 from our artists:
all original a cappella album/s
more all a cappella concerts
a local festival and a ‘camp’ of workshops for a cappella groups, arrangers, and composers for educational purposes
a solid organization or society for the community
and more surprises
Thank you to all the groups and individuals for pushing to share your passion for contemporary a cappella music making!
(Nakakamiss!

Countdown to #Eurovision: Yearly Reviews - 1980
Tumblr media
I’ve been wanting to do this for a while, and now I feel it is time! We’re approximately three months away from the next edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, and while we’re waiting for more of the 2017 songs to be released before reviewing them (as we did last year), we’re going to revisit Eurovision song contests from the past and rank our favorites in each contest. We’re starting here - 1980, for various reasons that I’ll get to in a little bit, and then we’ll travel our way to the 2016 edition.
Being from America while also being a Eurovision fan means a few things: 1) I have a very shaded view of what Europe is actually like sometimes (it’s not all just sunshine and giggles) and 2) I don’t have a bias, or count for any diaspora. I have German and Polish ancestry, but that means little at this point - what I’m saying here is that I can review these songs and hopefully be a little less biased than the usual European fan. There’s still an opinion, though, but that’s why people vote in the first place.
Anyhow, we’re starting with 1980 because it begins one of my favorite decades of music. I love 80′s music. On top of that, this particular contest is so weird in both execution and song selection. The winner from ‘79 was Israel, but they didn’t host 1980 because they couldn’t attend. Nor did the UK host... nor France! Nope; it went to the Netherlands, and this was the last time that ESC has been hosted in a country that didn’t win the prior year. The Dutch finished 12th in 1979... which would be, for equivalency’s sake, the same as if Malta took over hosting for 2017. Morocco participated for the first and (likely) only time in 1980, and I think that’s mainly due to the fact that Israel wasn’t there (sorry, but prob. the truth) and also that they scored so lowly. But was that low score justified?
Instead of one host running the shindig, NOS allowed each delegation to bring a presenter for introducing their song, which they did in the language of that country. Another unique aspect of this otherwise ordinary presentation.
But what you’re here to read about are the songs, which, in this contest, are all over the place... which makes me love this contest even more, so let’s get started!
Click here for the playlist to all 19 songs.
youtube
Tumblr media
1. AUSTRIA - Blue Danube, “Du bist Musik”
It sounds very “broadway” to me. It’s not bad, though! In fact the singers are great and the early out-of-tune parts by the two women are forgotten by the end. I don’t have much more to say about this, other than it earned a good placing in the contest. These were the days before there was such a ‘young-person’ influence on the contest; the songs that paid homage to older genres usually did well. This was a good starting song to the new decade... I won’t be able to say that for the upcoming decades. XD
Tumblr media
2. TURKEY - Adja Pekkan, “Petr’oil”
Lol, a song about petrol... Okay? Well, yes, actually. I do really like this! Reason being, this song starts a weird phase in the contest where the entries were... ‘out there’... in both style and content. Turkey’s close proximity to Arabia definitely influences some of their music, and that is easily heard here. It’s different, and I remember it. I love her dress, and that little belly-jiggle thing she does; her stage presence is so mesmerizing. And based on what I’ve read, this might have been one of Turkey’s first “good” songs in the contest. Now, it could have also been why it didn’t kill on the night - it was too out there and it does kinda drone on after a bit. But I don’t care.
Tumblr media
3. GREECE - Anna Vissi & the Epikouri, “Autostop”
Funny that they follow Turkey with Greece, given previous contest history. Autostop! Autostop! We go from songs about oil to songs about cars and hitchhiking. No, please keep going, don’t auto-stop... the dance routine elevates this for me and it is so delightfully poppy. From the first dance move where they reveal... one of the backup singers? Plus they’re doing all that stuff with corded microphones? Holy crud. This is the first time that Anna Vissi participated, and it won’t be the last. I’m just as in love with this entry for the camp it brought... but it gets even more silly, very quickly.
Tumblr media
4. LUXEMBOURG - Sophie & Magaly, “Papa pingouin”
And, here you go. I have sooo many words. So many. First, twin redheads in bright blue and pink jumpsuits. Second, we went from a song about oil, to cars, to... penguins. Third, there’s a giant 2-meter tall dorkazoid in a penguin suit on stage. They decided it’d be cool if he kept his glasses on for the performance. And somehow his buffoonery is all choreographed. Fourth, I think this constitutes the first time someone was slapped on the ass during an ESC performance. I just have so many questions... But it’s instantly catchy, that’s the thing. It wasn’t going to win, because for each person who can erase their mind for 3 minutes and acknowledge that the performance was enjoyable, there’s going to be the other song critic on the jury who ranks it last based on merit alone. But it did get Top 10. It’s just that... wow, did Luxembourg dip low.
Tumblr media
5. MOROCCO - Samira Said, “Bitaqat Khub”
And it all culminates to this. One moment in time, a magical moment where Moroccan people decided “Yeah, why not?” and threw a song from Africa into the ESC, just for kicks. Can you imagine a world where Morocco won, and all of Europe had gone to Casablanca? Well... while I have to try and love this for the uniqueness of having Morocco in the contest, it just wasn’t “Eurovision” enough to spark the imagination, or to be in my Top 10 at the end. I don’t know Arabic; most of Europe can’t relate much to the language, and Italy ended up being the only country to give Morocco any points. Good on you, Italy - but it didn’t ultimately keep them from leaving the contest forever.

6. ITALY - Alan Sorrenti, “Non so che darei”
This is the first song that sounds “1980″ - well, I guess Turkey fits the glove a little bit. This is another tune that I like, if for the fact that he’s really trying to sell it. Again, the staging is a bit ridiculous, with the lilac/pink clothing and fake guitars. Those women are doing some kind of interpretive swaying to Alan’s crooning. The falsetto is not so great, but it’s what gives the song character. It’s worth some points.

7. DENMARK - Bamses Venner, “Tænker altid på dig”
Cute. But it was never going to win the contest! In fact I admittedly started looking at my phone as this was playing. Mister Homely-from-the-Hills just kinda stands there and strums his guitar, and after all the movement and activity from earlier, this just dulls down the mood for me. Denmark always sent the schlager and campiest of songs until the mid-90′s.

8. SWEDEN - Tomas Ledin, “Just nu!”
Seriously, this contest is so odd. The music is all over the place, and the staging of this - he kicks the microphone stand up into the air to start the whole thing off! Man, what a performance. Now we have rock music! I would have a lot of fun shouting at my friends the closest thing to this phrase in English - “Just no!” - and, in their inquiry of where the hell that lyric comes from, leaving it to mystery. Just ‘no’? Why no? Why are you doing this to me, Tomas? Are you leaving me, Tomas!?!

9. SWITZERLAND - Paola, “Cinéma"
More Broadway? Songs about the entertainment industry? Well, it looks like Switzerland brought us back to reality by showing us what usually goes over well at ESC. At one point Paola stops to do a little jig, and the little tuba bit at the end is cute! It’s better than Austria, but this is not something I desire to listen to again. There’s nothing extraordinary memorable about this song’s participation. You’ll see/hear why in a few entries from now.

10. FINLAND - Vesa Matti Lori, “Huilumies”
*head to desk* ...  Okay, so, as we all know, before 1998 or something like that, all songs had to be performed in one of the official languages of the country. The Finnish language is so unique from everything else in this world, and so the first ten seconds of lyrics are agonizing. I really should’ve started an “R”-rolling counter. The man sings like the Trololo guy, and his instrument of choice is a flute. No! It’s great. So great. Good choices here. Total winner. Oh yeah. And it’s too bad; conductor Ossi Runne (legend!) was so into this. The guy solidified his ultimate ‘last place’ spot with whatever sound he made with his mouth in the last five seconds.

11. NORWAY - Sverre Kjelsberg & Mattis Hætta, "Sámiid Ædnan"
*head to ... desk?* If there’s any song that’s going to get away with half of it being the same lyric, it’s this one. The composition of this... it’s enigmatic. Seriously. Like, we go from orchestrated pop, to some weird pop-funk, brass-section grandiose big band thing, to a full stop (!) and the “Oh-leh-lol-eh” march theme. It’s great. I love it. I didn’t always love it, though. I think, on first listen however, this tune would have annoyed juries and listeners. It’s too unexpected and clunky. And so it landed towards the bottom of the voting board. But I’m going to give it some well-deserved love.

12. GERMANY - Katja Ebstein, “Theater"
*head to... nah just kidding :P* This song makes you forget about Greece and Switzerland; it’s very good. And again, still unique in comparison. It starts out with this ragtime piano type thing, and Katja just sells it. I can see why this was the runner-up. In the back of my mind, it would have been kinda bizarre if this had won - we would have seen much more joke entries in future years. We kind of got them anyway, but that’s a story for another journal entry!

13. UNITED KINGDOM - Prima Donna, “Love enough for two"
Lucky no. 13, you say? Tied score in the national selection, you say? And you picked this over... what? (Editor: This.) Oh, well, it was the right choice when compared to Prima Donna, but the fact of the matter is this song hasn’t aged well. It fits for 1980, and that’s why juries voted for it. But the outfitting and the cheesy lyrics irk me. Next.

14. PORTUGAL - José Cid, "Um grande, grande amor"
At the time, this song earned Portugal its best placing since their first participation, and I can see why. There’s faults to it, as well - it goes to 100% volume way too quickly, and there’s a “fake-out” ending for seemingly no reason. But Jose has a great voice; the vocals are flawless. And while this isn’t my favorite Portuguese entry, nor the most memorable, it should be recognized for its talent and skill during the live performance.

15. NETHERLANDS - Maggie McNeal, “Amsterdam”
I wish I knew Dutch; this sounds like a very grandiose, dramatic ballad. Ultimately I don’t think this song will make my Top 10 since there’s just so much other stuff in this contest to chat about. She has a great performance, and it gets the points, but... I don’t know, the Netherlands plays it somewhat safe with this entry when compared to the craziness of the other songs.

16. FRANCE - Profil, “Hé, hé, m'sieurs dames”
La belle France. For this first series of reviews, the French entry is sillier than usual; Profil are like this uncool disco-rock outlet of random people. This is a fun entry; I even downloaded the studio version of this song a while ago. This isn’t my favorite anymore, and the execution of this song live is kinda sloppy (they sped it up, too). But, again, it’s different - and thus, I love.

17. IRELAND - Johnny Logan, “What’s Another Year”
Yeah, the right song won. It’s another complex composition, not really structured to be a Eurovision song, but accomplishes all the things that a winner should accomplish - and it very much fits into the 1980 music scene. And Johnny wins it with that final note. “Mr. Eurovision” would go on to be the three-time winner, but why he couldn’t ever break into the international music industry remains forever a mystery.

18. SPAIN - Trigo Limpio, “Quédate esta noche"
Queeehhhh ehhhhh stahhhh, ooo-lah est-ah-de-dah... I think that singing pattern, after the 30th time repeating, gets on my nerves. It’s definitely a Spanish song, and elements of the composition are pretty, but this is too forgettable. That’s really all I can say about it. If you have further comments, let me know.

19. BELGIUM - Telex, “Euro-Vision”
I can’t believe this was magically drawn last in the ordering - a song in Eurovision, about Eurovision, in a contest where people were singing about all sorts of odd topics. It was the first fully-electronic entry in ESC history. We know this song for so many reasons now-a-days, but back then, this was not taken seriously. Regardless, the lead singer does his best job to stay with the choreography; his voice a bit shaky, probably due to nerves. He knew how ridiculous he was being in front of millions of Europeans. But, by golly, this will go down as one of the all-time greats. I love it, and so should you.
Well, that’s what I got. The manic contest has come to an end. The variety of songs in this one is why it’s one of my favorites; the only real other contest that challenges this variety from the decade is 1983. Here are my points for 1980′s contest:
12 - Ireland 10 - Germany 8 - Luxembourg 7 - Norway 6 - Greece 5 - France 4 - Belgium 3 - Turkey 2 - Sweden 1 - Portugal The “Big Fat 0″ award: Finland Honorable Mention: Morocco Worst Dressed: Italy - 50SS
