YES I CAN! giving people book/movie/music recommendations scratches a very specific itch in my brain. i love when people think i have good taste😭 love u forever for this anon!!!!! under the cut because i go ON AND ONNNN AND ON.

anyway. PREFACE. i love poetry, but i tend to collect it through pinterest instead of reading poetry collections. which i feel like is probably the better way of reading poetry. that being said i do have a few fave poems:

a poetry collection i have read is crush by richard siken! it's fairly easy to digest if you're new to poetry. but it's very evocative and deeply emotional for me. i love the poems snow and dirty rain, dirty valentine and litany in which certain things are crossed out.

jessica gives me a chill pill by angie sijun lou is one of my favourite poems ever. my favourite quote comes from it, 'I ask Jessica what drowning feels like and she says not everything feels like something else'.

this is a book? this a translation? this is kind of a play? i think it's fair to also call it poetry. antigonick by anne carson. it's a little difficult to parse but it's so worth it. my favourite line is 'a husband or a child can be replaced but who can grow me a new brother'.

this last one is not technically a poem. it's a game transcript which u should play. but it reads very much as a long poem/short story. it counts to me. anatomy by kitty horrorshow. if you're into haunted houses/body horror you'll like this. i love it very much, i think about it all the time. this is one of my many favorite lines from it: 'When a house is both hungry and awake, every room becomes a mouth.'

okay so that's poetry done. here are my favourite books:

annihilation by jeff vandermeer. if you've seen the movie (with natalie portman) and have no idea about the book i urge u to ignore the movie and read the book. it's science fiction/horror adjacent. i find the main character incredibly compelling and i love the writing style and the way vandermeer talks about nature. it's just a stunning book and has def influenced my writing even if it's not terribly obvious.

you feel it just below the ribs by jeffery cranor and janina matthewson. this is also science fiction. it's written in the world of a podcast i listen to, within the wires. i approached it with context on the world so i'm not sure how it would come across to someone with less context. regardless i think it's fantastically written. i'm not sure how to describe it other than to say i really connected with it emotionally.

the raven cycle series by maggie stiefvater. this is a young adult paranormal fantasy series. in my opinion it's not a typical YA series. rather than focusing overly on romance or love triangles it instead focuses deeply on incredibly well-rounded and multi-faceted characters, the power of friendship😭 and coming of age. romance is there but it's treated with such reverence. it's such a special series and stiefvater is a wonderful writer.

our wives under the sea by julia armfield is an exploration of grief and loss wrapped up in an abstract horror book. i can't describe how it made me feel but i think everyone should read it.

i wont get into these but also: my year of rest and relaxation by ottessa moshfegh, the hunger games series, the girls by emma cline and the grace year by kim liggett (<-i love the first 3/4s of this book. i hate the last 1/4. its worth it for the 3/4s imo).

Heyyy lol ofcc I love talking abt media I love! Tbh I do not watch a lot of movies but I do have a lot of book recs some of which have movie adaptations.

Movies/Books;

The Hunger Games series, Suzanne Collins. Katniss and Peeta invented love and romance. I can go on about these two forever, but I will simply mention the beach scene b/t them in Catching Fire. That changed me fundamentally, altered my brain chemistry permanently, etc etc. Also of course the critique on capitalism in a Western society and how despite the violence such a system can breed Love will ever and remain forever as long as hope prevails.

Strange Weather in Tokyo, Hiromi Kawakami. I love dialogue, and this story has so much of it. And also I adore stories of the mundane. The fact that the protagonist is a woman in her late 30s brings such a refreshing perspective on the woes and joys of life. I read this book last Fall when it was a particularly rough time for me and I was going through a lot of changes. This really grounded my feelings.

Norwegian Wood, Haruki Murakami. I know Murakami gets a lot of shit for how he writes female characters but I adore the female characters in this novel, particularly Naoko and Midori. I love how he describes their emotions through dialogue. It is so cut and dry at times it hits straight to my gut. The conclusion and resolution left me thinking for months.

Flowers for Algernon, Daniel Keyes. Until recently I just discovered this was a required reading in a lot of American schools, which was a surprise because I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and quite frankly most of my assigned readings in school were not as interesting. I really really really enjoyed learning more about the character of Charlie through diary entries. And how his style of writing changes as he goes through so many trials and tribulations to only end up back to where he started. Really a think piece for me.

Snow Country, Yasunari Kawabata. I absolutely adored the imagery in this novel. It also left me thinking for days, and I still cannot articulate myself properly to describe it. Wonderful read.

Bones and All, Camille DeAngelis. I hold Maren so near and dear to my heart. The idea of using cannibalism as an allegory for coming-of-age brings such a unique and powerful perspective to girlhood, something I had been searching for in so many novels but never quite received. Maren and Lee’s relationship is both sweet and tragic. The movie is also wonderful.

All About Lily Chou Chou. I first watched this movie when I was 14 or 15, which I should not have done lol. Its subject matters are so dark, and I feel so badly for all the female characters in this movie. The message it sends is so simple, but the cinematography is both beautiful and haunting.

Artists/Songs;

Ethel Cain. By far my number one inspo lol. I do not use Spotify regularly besides to create playlists but I feel like she would be my number one listened to. I adore her ep Inbred, particularly the songs Michelle Pfeiffer and Crush. They are such yearning songs, and describe how I love so so personally. Of course, Preacher’s Daughter is a masterpiece of an album. Strangers and Family Tree are my favourites

Mitski. I honestly do not know how to express how much of an influence she has been on everything I produce. I’ve raved about her so much. Puberty 2 will always, always, always be the soundtrack to my highschool life lol it is honestly concerning how much I was listening to her in year 9. Bury me at makeout creek will always inspire me to write romance. It just gets me into the mood to both drown and create.

Gracie Abrams. I love the simplicity of her lyrics, and some of my works are written honestly based on one lyric that I might find out stuck out to me for many of her things. I find her music so universal and open to interpretation, and I love that! I think that it leaves a lot of room to think, it can apply to so many people and touch so many topics. I particularly love songs from the deluxe version of her album Good Riddance (405, Two People, Unsteady) I listened to Two People writing the hanshin expressway lol.

Beabadoobee. I love Beatrice, I have been listening to her for so long. I love how she is so expressive with all of her songs and genres and lyrics. Honestly, I love her entire discography. Like I do not think I do not have a song of hers I skip.

Japanese Breakfast. I love Michelle. Her songs all feel like warm hugs! And also some of them want to make me dance! I listened to her so much taking the train home back from uni when I needed a pick me up lol.

The weddings I've gone too haven't been that big either. I think the max was 150 people (but could have been closer to 120). Most of them have really been ~100. It's just so expensive and that's why I'm sick of it. It's a lot to spend on a bridal shower gift, a wedding gift, AND I've been on two destination bachelorette parties so it's just literally been draining my bank account.

I love that you had a lowkey/relaxing birthday! It sounds so nice! I am actually a huge bday fan. It's the only time I want to be the center of attention (or willing to be). What's your favorite kind of outfit? Or your style in general?

I was firmly in middle school when The Hunger Games came out and Divergent was all throughout high school. On top of that my friend was recommending a whole bunch of zombie apocalypse books at the time too I was just really stressed while reading which is not what I wanted. It's still not either hahahahaha I don't mind a little conflict obviously but reading about governments and people being horrible to each other for the sake of being horrible (essentially)... I'm all set. I would first watch the news 😂😂

I have not taken the leap to read A Court of Thorns and Roses 😭 I think it's inevitable but I have A LOT of reading to do to get through my bookshelf. I've been making slower progress which isn't very helpful either 🙃 The fantasy side of novels never really piqued my interest either but I've seen lots of good things of course about the series! I'm sure I'll read it eventually, but I don't think I will be doing so just yet. When I do, I will keep an eye on Rhys hehehehe

I've been good. I swear the weekends are getting shorter every week. I'm lowkey dreading May and June but hopefully it will go by as quick as possible 🙃 I'm thinking about taking magnesium supplement because my doctor recommended it as a way to help me get out of my funky moods, boost energy, etc. etc. It's also just supposed to be really beneficial overall. Idk, I'll try anything to fix me hahahahaha I'm reading my book and writing part 4 of Ding...I'm not sure if it'll be done in time for tomorrow. Comparison of katniss and Eragon? That’s actually been on my mind lately. Young people thrust into a position of influence in a war against tyrants through no action of their own. Faced extreme and personal violence that ultimately turned into armed combat. Both somewhat an image and the real deal. At the end, the mockingjay is an identity that katniss can lay down, while Eragon grows into his final form as a dragon rider that will forever be his identity. Katniss finds peace in a domestic life away from the world, but Eragon can’t do that because his whole identity is soaked in tragedy and there is still pressure for him to rebuild something that’s more or less gone forever and that he never even got to be apart of in the first place. Maybe that’s part of why he leaves the continent.

Thoughts? Can Eragon find peace the way Katniss does? Not necessarily the “spouse and two kids” peace, just the watching the flowers grow on the gravesites and the internal forgiveness and moving on with her life.

ok thank you SM for this ask, i love it and never really thought about comparing the two. So, lets do that.

(Spoilers for both the hunger games series, and the inheritance cycle)

i suppose first off, I never compared the two in my mind, but you're right, there are so many similarities in their situations, and the trauma that they go through. however, it's not their similarities, but their differences that I think are interesting, so lets start there.

Eragon, like Katniss, is shoved into the spotlight and forced to become a symbol for the rebellion in his world, however, there is a lot more power inherent in his position than for katniss. he is a part of the dragon riders, who dined with kings and rulers and were independent of all of them. his position itself holds the power to govern and make decisions for many, and it's a power that he is forced to deal with (along with saphira) directly, and without guidance (after brom dies). However, while there is power inherent in Katniss's position, it isn't a power she often wields directly. she is not the one who fights in the rebellions (until mockingjay, and even then), she is not the one who calls the shots on much of anything. she is a figurehead, a symbol, but not a true leader.

I think this is a key point in how these characters ended up being so different. Katniss can be selfish, vacillating, rude, and cold. Eragon however, is brash, honest, direct, and at times, impulsive. (the impulsivity usually pays off for him but still). I think that they ended up so different is because eragon is distinctly aware of the duties that came along with being a dragon rider, as well as the responsibility of being the only one with enough power to defeat galbatorix. I think that sense of responsibility aged him from what he could have been: a farm himbo. there's still an amount of good thats inherent in eragon that i don't see as much of in katniss, but i think that katniss, if she was in eragon's position, would have grown tf up a little bit and assumed responsibility more than she did in her own.

i suppose to sum it up, katniss doesn't have nearly as much of a sense of responsibility as eragon does. if eragon fucks up, it has numerous consequences that ripple across alagaesia (lookin at u elva), however if katniss fucks up, shit burns to the ground and a bunch of people die, but there's still a chance of a later rebellion. Eragon is literally *the last hope* tm, while katniss has a lot less direct power and influence, as well as there still being hope even if she fails/dies.

OK NOW TO ANSWER YOUR ACTUAL QUESTION. (i rambled on for a bit because it was fun, but you can skip down to here if u like)

do i think eragon can have peace similar to katniss's? yes, i do. do i think he will get it anytime soon? nope. he has too many irons in the fire right now for him to have any sort of peace. he has the legacy of the riders to (at least start to) rebuild, the dragon race to coax back into the world, and he has to train and teach the new riders that will begin to crop up. but once he finishes that, sure! i think there will be a time for him to fade back and let younger people take over the legacy and merely be a guide, but that's a very, very, very, very long time coming.

the seven husbands of evelyn hugo by taylor jenkins reid!

when i tell u i have GENUINELY never felt more connected to a book than i did reading tshoeh,,,, KNSDLMF i read this book in less than 3 days because i genuinely could NOT put it down, which is a very rare thing that happens for me (i usually take forever reading books,, it literally took me a year to finish six of crows LMAO) but the characters are all so compelling and complex and theres so many emotions i felt while reading it and when i finished it i literally had to just lay down because i was so messed up about it. its so good. i genuinely have an evelyn hugo url saved because of how much i love her ok i am a changed woman after reading this book

19. most disliked popular books?

oh boy give me a second KJNDLFK an honorable mention is the hunger games series by suzanne collins, not because i dislike the books or characters or their stories (i love them, actually), but because just,, i didnt like the pacing, and ive tried to read them many times but i just never seem to be able to get past when katniss first enters the games. the pacing just feels off and it makes it hard for me personally to read :/

however other than that i really only have one "popular" book that really fits into this category, and that's divergent by veronica roth

i have. SO much to say about this book, but i'll try to not add personal anecdotes about it that just made this a more excruciating book to read. its just so plainly a hunger games rip-off that tried to ride the hype of what hunger games did, but with a lifeless protagonist who just feels like she only exists to do the plot of this book and literally nothing else. every other character is also just a crash dummy with a hair and the plot falls flat when u realize its just the hunger games but way less smart. i hate this book. i also had to annotate every single page of this nearly 500 page nightmare and its just the cherry on top of this roller coaster of hate

Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

Sometimes! I started writing fic on FFN in middle school (All those fics were taken down, don't bother looking for them), I didn't have that option since FFN is...problematic. So when I moved to AO3 and had the ability to reply and moderate comments, it was kind of heaven? I often forget that AO3 commenting culture is way different than FFN, so it feels like padding out my comments stats when I reply a bunch, but it's nice being able to answer questions if readers have them. Even if I know they just forgot a passage or skimmed it, having the ability to create that point-to-point contact lets me feel more connected to my readers. And with my experience commenting on other stories, the feeling as a reader is the same. If I say "Sorry I've been away, life got weird, but I missed you guys!" and people comment welcoming me back (Looking at you Uxor fans <3), that feels good for everybody.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

This is tricky for two reasons. If you've read my fics you know I'm fond of the angst, but I have a rule about happy endings (bittersweet at worst). And...most of my fics are WIPs lmao.

I think it's a 3-way tie between I. The Marked, Obnoxious, and Boats Against the Current.

Do you write crossovers? If so what’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Not anymore, but I wrote a Twilight/HP cross-over in middle school that was p r e t t y d a m n s t u p i d and had enough similarities to the play that I like to forget it existed.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

-snort- Oh yeah.

Yeah but it's a newer development.

What’s your all time favorite ship?

Oof that's hard because I rarely have solitary favorites of anything.

Tomione, Dramione, Harmony, Zutara, and Carlisle/Bella (very specific circumstances).

What's a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

The Fourth Blood Princess. It's one of those fics that essentially spans the entire series and has such a niche plot and almost no audience. The Diary is also a large-scale story, and I know I can't do both. But demand is far, far higher for Diary.

What are your writing strengths?

My OCD. Planning and cohesion I guess? I hate plotholes and I'm good at organizing the data I need to write a story correctly. If you've seen all the reference materials for The Diary, you know what I'm on about.

But if that's not the type of strengths this question is talking about then I have no idea.

What are your writing weaknesses?

My OCD. I cannot just free write and edit later. I have to edit as I go and also edit later. But if I misspell something and those little red squiggly lines appear? Train of thought derailed. Fix the spelling. There is no preventing a flow from being interrupted by such things. I've just learned to sometimes switch tracks without the undiagnosed ADHD making me forget what was going on immediately.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I only do it if I'm incorporating it in a way that my reader doesn't have to leave my story to go use google translate. If it's breaking the suspension of disbelief or taking the reader of out the story, it needs to be used better. Same with pronouncing it. Readers are going to skim over words they can't mentally or verbally pronounce.

I did this in Diary actually, and made the characters acknowledge how ridiculous the Irish/Irish Gaelic lines of a ritual were, but taught the reader how to say it as Hermione learned how to say it. (It took me and young tom 40 minutes to figure out how to say the spell.)

But fics where like...entire conversations are had as just a block of another language with no indicators to the audience on what is being said? Those aren't fun to read for anybody.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Twilight.

What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written?

The Fourth Blood Princess and a Carlisle/Bella fic that really makes more sense as an original fiction project than a fanfic.

C - A ship you have never liked and probably absolutely never will. 

Oh man. There are too many to name them all (I might be slow to warm up to a ship, but once my embers of hatred are set aflame, they never go out). 

Duncan x Veronica (Veronica Mars): Setting aside the “he thought she was his sister and sexed her anyway” element, which that is a wild statement to write, he’s just such a slice of American cheese trying to convince the world he’s brie. SHUT UP, DUNCAN! YOU’RE NOT A SLICE OF BRIE! I WOULD NEVER HAVE YOU WITH HONEY AND APPLES. 

Jane x Rafael (Jane the Virgin): This one is tricky for me, man, because I have a hard time explaining why it didn’t work for me. I think I resented the way the writers setup a false equivocation between Michael and Rafe - that Michael was the fun safe one and that Rafael was the passionate edgy one. I think it did a big disservice to both Rafael and Michael. 

Chuck x Blair (Gossip Girl): Back when Gossip Girl came out, my friend was a big fan, I’d never seen it, and she had the first season on DVD. We had a girls weekend in Portland and ordered room service and watched the first several episodes of s1 and I hated Chuck on sight and kept hating him. And my friend kept telling me he got better and I kept waiting and kept hating him. So...I do not want to see his marble mouth face on my TV and I do not want to see him messing with my girl Blair who might be one of the greatest TV characters from the past 15 years. No further questions. 

Others include Katniss x Gale (The Hunger Games), Dawson x Joey (Dawson’s Creek), Ted x Robin (How I Met Your Mother), Cristina x Owen (Grey’s Anatomy), Dan x Vanessa (Gossip Girl),  Fez x Jackie (That 70s Show), Josh x Donna (The West Wing, just going to sneak this one in and hope no one notices), etc. etc. etc.

Alright. I know what you want. To quote one of the Olsen twins in the cinematic masterpiece It Takes Two, “I can see right through!” 

Let’s talk Will Cooper and Angie D’Amato from the cancelled too soon show Single Parents (I have gotten 3 people hooked on this show and I will not rest until my reign of terror widens). 

There’s a blithers fic for Will x Angie (that you, @thelillykane absolutely need to read!!!) that includes an incredible description of who Will is from Angie’s POV: 

Will isn’t the type of guy she’s normally into. He isn’t some tall skinny dude with amazing hair and/or the ability to scream-sing his feelings into an unfeeling world. Will is a big old goofball of a dad, dependable and kind and sometimes manic, with undercurrents of a real weirdness that Angie gets such a kick out of every time she taps into them. Will is intense about the things he cares about, but he doesn’t write cryptic songs about his repressed man-emotions or play guitar while looking soulful about it or anything awesome like that. Will acts on his feelings. He organizes and works and makes life better for the people he cares about.

And it’s that undercurrent of weirdness that Angie sees in Will and that Will sees in Angie that unites them and that I love. Yes, Angie is predisposed to think the worst of people and Will is predisposed to see the best. But! they are both giant weirdos who absolutely are like “yes, when one has transgressed in friendship, the thing one buys to make up for it are giant turkey legs.” 

I think the series focuses more on how Will’s labradoodleness betters Angie’s life, but I also see so many ways that Angie’s skepticism of the world would be good for Will - “not everything always works out, dude, and you have to find a way to be okay when it doesn’t.” And also, like, Will gets Angie. I think from the Pilot episode, he sees that her bossiness and meanness and zero tolerance for nonsense is how she cares. Most importantly! It works for Will to have that in his life! Because otherwise he never would have stopped wearing zip-off short cargo pants. He would still be carrying that mermaid bag around. He might have convinced himself to give his marriage with Mia another shot, etc. etc. etc. 

Anyway, I probably just need to write my fic about them to get my feelings out. 

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending? 

Not really, I’m afraid. So utterly boring, I know. Idk, man, send me an example of a headcanon you’d die defending? I feel like the things I get heated about are when I feel canon is interpreted in a way I don’t agree with. 

S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon (prompts optional but encouraged)

Single Parents: You and I have talked about this, but Will does not remember what he said to Angie. There’s no possible way. And Angie absolutely rides out the summer in Barstow because there’s no way she’s confronting her complicated feelings head on. Hell no. 

Veronica Mars: This one’s for you, girl, but Lilly Kane would have been fine if she’d lived past 16-years old. I don’t think she would have been a forever giant hedonist or super destructive, because her acting out had a very clear origin. And I think her getting out of that house, getting away from her parents, getting away from Duncan, a lot of that chaos would have cleared in her mind. Yes, she might have always struggled with this feeling of inferiority, but I think she would have been okay. 

Once Upon a Time: This is a small silly thing, but I like to think that the reason Emma was never adopted or found a stable foster family was because Regina’s curse reached into the Land Without Magic. Later seasons establish (I think??? I basically haven’t watched 3 seasons of the show) that there is magic in the real world, but it’s dormant and hidden because people don’t believe. Regina’s curse took away the happy endings, and so doesn’t it make sense that it would follow Emma to ensure she also didn’t get her happy ending even separated from her family? I have a premise for a fic in my head where the family she lived with felt this need to return her to the foster care system. That there was a pressing on their chests, a squeezing of their hearts if you will, a voice in their ear whispering to send her back. Instead of listening to it, though, they fight against it. And that’s one of the first moments, right from the start, the love of these adopted parents weakening the curse.
