Replaying phantom hourglass and I really don’t think it’s fair to characterize Linebeck as a coward. Like yeah he doesn’t want to go into the dungeons or the temple of the ocean king, but the temple of the ocean king sucks the life out of you, you see skeletons and spirits of people who died in there. He actually did go in there by himself and got trapped. Another thing to keep in mind is that he’s a normal person, he doesn’t fight and he prefers the laid back lifestyle. Now he does want treasure and that gets him motivated, but that treasure is also in a life threatening ghost ship that takes victims here and there. It makes sense that he’s nervous about that.

Another thing to keep in mind is that when you do fight monsters and bosses in the sea, he’s not scared at all. He tells you that there’s an enemy, he cheers you on, and even when you die he just kinda accepts his fate. He’s a competent and capable man on the sea, and you know that he knows what he’s doing. Also, as soon as you see the ghost ship after you get the second sea chart, he tells you to go straight ahead, to chase it down. Again, he’s motivated by Treasure, but he doesn’t hesitate to chase after the ghost ship.

Maybe as an adult he should go and help Link who is just a kid, but keep in mind that this is a video game and you don’t want your hand to be held the entire time playing. His role only seems to be sailing you around anyways, not traveling by your side like Ciela (I’d imagine it’d be different for a full grown man to be following you around, cuz most Zelda companions hide away while you’re playing)

Anyways, Linebeck is cowardly at times, but I wouldn’t characterize him as a coward. A greedy pathetic scoundrel, yeah, but not really a coward.

I know I'm not the first to point out how insane it is that Starfleet puts daycares on their ships, but as someone who grew up in a maritime family and spent a lot of time on boats as a kid I really can't express enough just what a baffling world building decision that is.

Like my dad used to work on cargo ships, he would sometimes be gone for months at a time for work. It sucked! But growing up on a cargo ship would have sucked more. Boats like that are socially isolating and dangerous for the adults on board, raising a kid on one would be down right abusive.

I'm friends with a lot of people who grew up in the local fishing community. Commercial fishing is incredibly dangerous and most of them had family members died at sea when they were kids. It's terrible and tragic, but do you know what would be more terrible and tragic? Actual children living and dying on those fishing boats.

My older sister was a little kid when my dad was still working on submarines. He missed a significant amount of her early childhood while he was enlisted and I know he still regrets it. But he'd sure regret it more if his four year old had been living on a nuke sub in the middle of the god damn Cold War.

You would never put schools and daycares on working vessels irl because that would be blatant child endangerment, but somehow, dispite the fact that almost every ship we see in Star Trek is a merchant or military ship, it suddenly becomes okay when it's in space? An environment even more dangerous and deadly than the ocean???

Who's untopian future is that? I am so serious. That Ferengi in Rascals was right - it's awful and fucked up that starfleet officers bring their kids onto ships with them. What is wrong with these people?

I spent so long thinking about this ask and these questions because I unfortunately haven't gotten to think very much about the little things in Johnny and Xixi's relationship.

General 6 - What's their relationship with each other's families?:

This was very difficult to figure out because I had never put all that much thought into Johnny's family or anything like that so I only really have an answer for his relationship with Xixi's family members.

But Johnny generally gets along with most of her family members, we know he's best friends with Frank and gets along with Vanessa reasonably well. The only person he really dislikes is her mom. He's had front row seats to so many episodes of frustration and sadness because of her. I honestly don't think he could ever come close to standing her mom. Her dad also has very one-sided beef with Johnny for the longest. He never really finds out why her dad started disliking him one day but he really couldn't care less.

Johnny has known her aunt of all her blood-related family members the longest and she's always treated him like one of her own. She loves him but also thinks he's batshit crazy.

And of course, this leaves his relationship with her grandma which, to me, is the best thing ever. She just understands what he's about and respects him for it. In that period of time after the boat incident and before Johnny got locked up, he checks up on her a lot, especially on the weekends and even goes as far as to invite her to dinner with Aisha. He watches over her because he knows its what Xixi would want and I like to think its how he learned the little bit of Spanish that he knows.

Granny is definitely picking up those collect calls :)

It happens in that weird period of time for them between SR2 and SRTT. They're both drunk out of their minds but she's drunker, spilling her guts into a toilet and he's right there beside her. Taking care of her. And once she gets a moment to breathe, she just looks at him and tells him "I love you", not as a confession of love (though it is absolutely that as well) but as gratitude for staying with her. He's too drunk to properly process it but I think he knows. Since that argument in the parking lot in 2007, he's known.

I feel like they don't do anything special when it comes to nicknames, though she tends to playfully call him Gat more than she does his actual name sometimes.

And it shows just how scary that can be. The paranoia and the setbacks and the trust issues. The way people in those situations lash out and close themselves off and the way it takes time to recover and move forwards.

It’s a powerful message, and an important one, and that’s why I love the ship.
