Julian and Keiko headcanons because Keiko gets sidelined so much and deserves the world and I wish we got to see them interact more

when they get stumped on their respective projects, they'll do late night work sessions together and bounce their research off each other to see if the other can help them figure out where the problem is. they'll do this in person when theyre both on the station, but also over call if one of them is away, and after the O'Briens move back to Earth

they edit each other's papers (Keiko marvels at Julian's ability to spell out complex chemical compounds with his eyes closed, and somehow use 'their' instead of 'there') (in his defense he wrote that bit at 4 in the morning after going 2 straight days without sleep) (she threatens to sedate him)

Julian sometimes brings back plants from planets they explore in the Gamma Quadrant and gives them to Keiko. sometimes he does it because the plant has medicinal properties and the two of them can do a joint research project, but most of the time he does it just to give her a nice gift

when Miles goes away for particularly dangerous missions, Julian will keep Keiko company and help keep her mind off of it. sometimes she has trouble sleeping because shes so worried, so he'll hang around and start rambling on about whatever he's currently working on until she falls asleep. he jokes he's boring her to sleep, but it actually means a lot to her

they have a weekly tea date. this is their prime gossip time. sometimes Jadzia is invited

when Keiko's mad at Miles she'll rant to Julian about it. Julian learned very quickly that this is not a time where advice is wanted, so he sits back and lets her get it all off her chest, because she really just wants someone to listen and let her blow off some steam

Julian makes a concentrated effort to learn more about plant husbandry and care after the incident where he accidentally killed some of Keiko's prized plants because he actually does feel very bad about it

Julian hovered over Keiko nearly as bad as Miles did when she was pregnant with Kirayoshi (and then he hovered over her even more after the pregnancy transfer, and he wouldnt tell anybody why, but Keiko knew it was because nearly losing her shook him up pretty bad)

when Julian gets outed for being augmented, Keiko goes to him and gives him the tightest, warmest hug he's ever gotten in his entire life

Julian gets invited to girls nights with Keiko and Molly (steady surgeon's hands make him the best one to paint nails) (he pretends to complain but he loves it)

anytime Julian has to go away for a scientific conference of any kind, if he gets to bring someone with him, his first choice is always Keiko

me thinking "damn, i'm bummed that i couldn't slip in some more obvious references to the DS9 polycule in today's fic" has gotten me started on thinking about a DS9 modern au (in its most polyamorous form, of course) and now i'm--

what's the best way to have all of these people know each other?? like i think modern military fundamentally Does Not Work for them (and is also not what i want to write for them). i know deep dish nine exists but restauranting doesn't super apply to me either.

honestly i'm leaning towards just having them know each other in disconnected ways (so like, jadzia and sisko know each other through curzon, but sisko met kira at work, julian is new at jadzia's job, miles and keiko live next door to julian..... for example). but that also sounds overly elaborate and doesn't really explain how they ALL know each other?

do people have thoughts on DS9 modern aus?

I just finished season 5 of deep space nine as a first time viewer and here are my thoughts:

- so we're entering the war seasons huh

- Quark's got game and no one (Odo) can deny it

- Worf, please get over yourself, Jadzia is so hot and so into you

- Ensign Vilix'pran singlehandedly causing overpopulation on the station

- Trials and Tribble-ations!!!! Watched it twice

- as if Kirk wouldnt notice smokeshows Jadzia and Benjamin!!!!! he would flirt with both of them in a second

I have a theory that Lower Decks is more of a spiritual successor to DS9 than to TNG:

- Deconstructs Star Trek while also absolutely loving Star Trek

- The main characters are a bunch of misfits, not the unironic elite aspirational best-of-the-best (still hypercompetent though)(this is also true for voyager)

- The main characters constitute one big polycule

See the thing about ds9 being a giant polycule full of queers is that it makes it all the more relatable. I'm besties with my metamore like Kira and Keiko; I'm respectfully sharing space with a metamore who I don't know very well and kinda rubs me the wrong way but hey we love the same person so we're awkwardly chilling like Garak and O'Brien; I'm trans and getting railed from all angles at once just like Julian Bashir; I'm in an adversarial friendship with my metamore once removed like Kira and Quark.

It's just such a wholesome representation of the queer trans polyam space future we all deserve.

Almost every character is dating each other in this show and they made it canon for several but they all fall apart (Except Rom and Leela cause they’re perfect)

The O’Brien polycule… I drew it out but it got more complicated than the O’Briens (basically Julian is best friends with Miles who is married to Keiko. Keiko was on a shuttle while pregnant with Julian and Kira when there was a crash and Julian had to transfer the child from Keiko into either him or Kira, so Kira volunteered. She ends up living with the O’Brien’s while carrying the child and bonds with both of them (to the point both she and Miles think it’s weird). Kira eventually gets with Odo who is Quark’s nemesis and Quark is crushing on Jadzia who is exes with Julian who is (somewhat unknowingly) courting Garak. Jadzia Dax becomes married to Worf but I think her and Sisko have definitely fucked. Sisko is married to Kasidy and enemies with Gul Dukat who reciprocates that but is also fixated on Kira who hates him. Did I miss something?)

Now, I bet they did not count DS9 in their statistics because it’s a station not a ship but also because they’d always win this contest

To be honest Lower Decks is maybe the most outright vulgar in its language but most of the time it’s a feel good show about a bunch of best friends. Their captain is married, their CMO and head security officer are in a (happy?) relationship, and third thing here.

I haven’t seen any of Voyager or Enterprise and I don’t think Discovery is that horny/romantically uncommitted

I just finished Voyager like a week or so ago. (I don't remember when exactly. Time is fake.) Plus I've been hit with another bout of writer's block. So I wanna talk about star trek. Tuvok (Yall the way he was when young and working under Sulu versus how he is now as he works with Janeway, oh man, the growth!)

Most out of left field, you say?

Beverly and Guinan: They were having a gossipy chat one day in Beverly’s quarters and one thing led to another. Their interactions in Suspicions convinced me of this.

Picard and Guinan: I’m not sure how common of an opinion this is, but for me there is absolutely no question they’ve had sex at least a dozen times. I don’t necessarily think there’s anything romantic going on, though their relationship is obviously close in an indefinable way.

Deanna, Ro, and Riker: There is No Way they didn’t hook up after Conundrum.

Jadzia and Quark: I am ignoring the canon decision to suddenly pretend Quark was in love with Jadzia all along in seasons 6/7 when their relationship is clearly “entirely platonic friends who sleep together frequently”.

Julian and Martok: They absolutely slept together at the Dominion prison camp in By Inferno’s Light. They have slept together multiple times afterward too.

Quark and Garak: They had sex once sometime after Profit and Loss. They both had a terrible time and refuse to ever speak of it again.

Quark and Damar: They were regularly having sex during the Dominion occupation of DS9. You cannot convince me otherwise. They both may or may not have been slightly drunk most of the time.

O’Brien, Keiko, Leeta, and Rom: I am not a huge believer in the typical O’Brien polycule situation, but I am definitely a believer in this alternative, objectively ridiculous polycule. We know O’Brien and Rom became friends, and it is my personal belief that the two married couples got together often, and, well…

Tom and the Doctor: They’ve spent a lot of time together in sickbay, and given both of their personalities, they were bound to try some experimentation. They both pretended it was the others’ idea and they were the one who needed convincing.

Seska and B’Elanna: They were having sex in the Maquis, clearly.

(I just did characters from the 90’s shows for this, since those are the shows with the dynamics I have the strongest opinions on. Also, if anyone for some reason wants more of my thoughts on which Voyager characters have had sex with each other, check out this post I made a little while ago.)
