thinking about percy and annabeth's different relationships with the concept of choice, and how perfectly they compliment each other
(spoilers for the percy jackson & the olympians book series and season one of the tv show below)
annabeth struggles throughout the series with making choices; when the sirens show her the idealized world her hubris makes her believe she can build, it's one where doesn't have to choose between her father's world and her mother's, or between luke's side and her own. this comes up again when janus asks her to make a choice in the labyrinth, and many more times as she wrestles with the decision to fully give up on luke or not. choice is something that feels daunting and foreign for annabeth, who has been burdened with the knowledge of the great prophecy and the consequences of fate since she was ten years old. i LOVE that the show subtly introduces this aspect of annabeth's character so early, with the scene in the convenience store where she takes every flavor of candy instead of choosing one, and her being the one to witness the string of fate being cut.
percy, on the other hand, embraces the concept of choice and actively makes choices, over and over, even when prophecies and authority figures and the rules of the godly world seem to indicate that he can't. i also LOVE how prominent they make this aspect of his character in the show; he immediately questions the idea of fate being certain and rigid when he learns about the thread being cut, adamantly stating that the choices he makes are important and can change the outcome of what's going to happen. he defiantly chooses his mother over everything in the godly world, and even tries to convince luke that he can still make the right choice after the betrayal.
their relationships with choice contrast in such a beautiful way, and it makes the end of the series all the more impactful. the final line of the prophecy requires them to make a choice together: to save olympus, annabeth must make the choice to let go of luke, and the idealized family she wished for, by telling percy to give the knife to luke. percy then has to make the same choice, the hardest choice he's ever had to make, by giving luke the knife.
in the end, annabeth, who has struggled the entire series to make difficult choices, is finally able to overcome it because percy is there to support her. and percy, who has made difficult choices throughout the series but has to make the hardest one, the one that determines the fate of the world, is able to do it because annabeth is there to support him.
all along, the two of them were fated to make a choice together, and it was the unwavering trust in one another that they'd developed over four years that allowed them to make the right one.
oh, the soulmates of it all.

Hey I saw your requests were open? If that's still the case then I'd love to request a Natemare x reader that has some sanders sides fic where the reader has been dating Mare for awhile so the reader decides to finally introduce Mare to there best friend of many years, Virgil. If that's possible, please and thank you.
Of course!!!
I Lie Inside Myself for Hours
@namelessmunster
Title From: Imaginary by Evanescence
Fandom: Youtuber Egos + Sanders Sides
AU: None
Content Warnings: Not proofread
----------------------------------------
As you were standing in front of the Sides house, it occurred to you for the fifteenth time that day that Natemare, your boyfriend, had never met the Sides. You didn’t know if they’d even get along.
The reason you were here other than introduce him to your friends was to see your best friend of many years, Virgil. He was an anxious guy, but somehow you were closest to him out of the Sides rather than one would probably expect your best friend to be, like Logan or Patton.
But Anxiety was the one who you were closest to. You’d known Virgil for around five years, since Thomas had invited you over saying that he “wanted you to meet a few people.” It turned out that those people were parts of himself.
You sighed, and knocked on the door, then turning to Mare. “It won’t be that long, usually Roman- Creativity gets the door within a few seconds,”
“Yeah? Wellll, I can’t help but notice it’s taking a few more than that, isn’t it Y/N?” He said sarcastically, looking around the outside of the house. Oh yeah, he’d for sure get along with Virgil.
Around ten seconds later Roman opened the door, and he smiled at the sight of you. He called out to the other Sides, “Y/N IS HERE!!!”
Then he looked back at you and his eyes turned to Mare. “Ohh, who is this now? Your lover? What’s his name? How did you meet-“
“Roman!! Shut!!!” You said, interrupting him. That man never stopped with his romance questions if he figured one was interested in it.
“Awww… fine, I’ll save them for later. But do I at least get to know his name?” Roman said.
You looked over at Mare, and he smiled.
“I’m Natemare, but if you want you can call me Mare,” He told Roman, shaking his hand.
“Well.. come in! Virgil will be happy to see you, Y/N!” Roman said, moving out of the way.
“Who’s Virgil?” Mare asked you as you both walked into the house.
“He’s my best friend,” You answered.
“And you’ve never introduced me to him? Shame upon you,” He said jokingly, “How dare you not introduce me to everyone you know.”
“Shut up,” you said, laughing a little.
“Hmm… no!” He replied. “Y’know, I am curious as to who the other Sides are. Roman was certainly a… character,”
“That’s just how he is,” you said. You then saw Logan, Patton and Janus hanging out in the living room, playing some kind of board game.
Patton looked up first, and pretty much shouted in excitement. “Y/N! You’re here! I’m so happy, it’s been way too long,”
“Patton, it has been two weeks since Y/N has last visited.” Logan said, placing a piece on the board. Janus looked at you, slightly smiling, and then he looked at Mare.
“Oh, great, there are two emos here now.. I’m so thrilled,” He said, and he rolled his eyes.
“You remind me of my younger brother,” Mare said to Janus.
“Amazing,” Janus said flatly. Patton then went up to Mare.
“What’s your name? Are you human? Also, I’m Patton, Thomas’s Morality, Logan is his Logic and Janus is his… Deceit,” He said.
“I’d suggest stopping with the rampant questions, Patton, he’s already been questioned enough by Roman,” Logan said.
“It’s okay. I’m Natemare, and no, I’m not human. I’m a siren,” Mare answered Patton.
“Like the beings that lured sailors to their deaths in Greek Mythology?” Logan asked.
Mare nodded, “Exactly. Most people I meet get scared when they hear that, so it’s kind of new that people aren’t.. you know, trembling and backing away just because of that.”
“It wouldn’t be nice to judge you based on what you are!” Patton said, smiling once more.
“Hypocrite,” Janus quietly said with anger while out of earshot of Patton. Which was true. Out of all the light Sides, Patton was the one who judged the dark Sides based on what they were the most.
“That’s nice. It was nice meeting all of you, Y/N has mentioned all of you once or twice,” Mare said.
“You did?!” Patton said happily.
You nodded. “Yeah. Also, Patton, do you know where Virgil is?” You asked. You hadn’t seen the emo nightmare yet, which was odd. Usually he was one of the first to come talk to you when you came over.
“Yes, where is that raccoon? He disappeared right when you showed up,” Janus said.
“He’s downstairs,” Patton replied, “Probably on the couch, poor kiddo. I wonder what’s up with him today..”
It might be the fact a new person is here. Virgil didn’t like new people, he never has. It took him a while to trust you, and even more time for him to open up to you.
“Thank you! We’ll go check on him,” You said, walking down the stairs with Mare.
“So.. if the Sides represent things about Thomas, then what is Virgil?” Mare asked you.
“Virgil is Thomas’s Anxiety,” you answered his question. “He’s not really a people person,”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” Mare said. You two reached the bottom, and entered into a second living area.
You looked around for your best friend, and then saw him on the couch, like Patton said he might be.
He was on his phone, probably scrolling on Tumblr, with his hood up and his headphones in. The music was loud, so loud that you could hear it. It was “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” by My Chemical Romance, which was Virgil’s self proclaimed “theme song” and one you two often listened to together.
Well, if listening is counted as screaming the lyrics to it at 3am, then yes, you listened to it together.
You went up to him and tapped his shoulder a few times. “Virgil??”
He paused his music and looked up, not taking off his hood. “What?” He said with an annoyed tone. You were stunned for a moment. He hadn’t been this blatantly annoyed with you since before you were best friends.
“Uh- I want you to meet someone,” You said, gesturing to Mare. Virgil sighed, and finally took off his hood, taking out his headphones as well.
“Who?” That was all he said. “Don’t tell me they’re like Roman… or worse, Remus,”
“Oh, no, he’s not like them at all. This is Natemare, my boyfriend,” You said. Virgil moved to look at Mare, looking him up and down.
“He’s your boyfriend? Huh. Wait, first of all, WHEN did you get a boyfriend? You’ve never mention this to me before,” he said, his annoyance slightly going away.
“We’ve been dating for six months,” Mare answered for you.
“Six months??? Y/N, you’ve been over here eight times in that time and you’ve NEVER mentioned this??? I would’ve thought that you would tell me whenever you got a partner, since you’re, you know, my best friend!” Now the annoyance was back. Virgil did seem mad, as he raised his voice slightly.
“Hi.. I don’t want us to bother you, we can leave if you want,” Mare said. “Also.. were you listening to MCR? They’re one of my favorite bands, and I’m Not Okay is a good song.”
Virgil was silent for a few moments, and then spoke. “No, you guys can… stay if you want. I want Y/N here at least,” He said.
“Alright,” You said. “Can I sit next to you?” You asked. Virgil simply nodded, and moved so you could sit next to him.
You sat down, and Mare sat down too. You moved closer to him, and Virgil sort of.. glared?? Does he think that just because you have a boyfriend, you’re going to abandon him or something?
“Virgil.. I’m not going to leave you, and I’m not going to stop being friends with you just because I have a boyfriend,” You said, trying to reassure him due to his unspoken feelings.
“Who said I thought that? I wasn’t saying that,” He said. Mare laughed.
“Don’t worry, I’m not gonna steal your best friend from you or something,”
Virgil… actually laughed at that. That was a good sign.
That was probably the quickest time he laughed at something someone he just met said, even when you had first met him.
You could tell they’d get along great. Eventually.

scene sides (or at least an attempt at scene culture)
in order:
Logan Monroe - 28 - she/they
transfem hacker!!!!! also a major gamer (fnaf, minecraft, and fortnite are her favs). they’re a bit new to the scene… scene lmao, but her joyfriend virgil has helped a great deal with their confidence in expressing herself this way. they’re also in a relationship with roman, but their relationship is unlabeled because they don’t really need a label, they just know they love each other in a way that doesn’t need explaining <3 really loves dinosaurs
Roman/Prince Mordecai - 31 - he/they/crown/fae
name hoarder!!!! also every gender except the feminine ones. casually dating patton, in a relationship with logan, and in a QPR with virgil. his favorite color is the rainbow <3 they make EDM and crown’s really good at it (look up The Royal Dream Machine on spotify /j). and fae’re a therian! foxkin <3
Patton Harlow - 34 - he/she/any “lovecore” neos
gender is a game and patton is playing for keeps. if cute gives you kandi jewelry or hair accessories he must really care about you. she loves clowns and sky blue (and romans music <3). has the most piercings of the group, but also the most tattoos because heart has literally one. and no one else has any not even remus jahdjdjf (it’s one of those gothic heart tattoos as a tramp stamp because why not). really loves domo
Virgil Tyler - 29 - they/it/she
she wears a mask for fashion but also to hide its face in public (there’s no pandemic in this au). they love sanrio, especially hello kitty, kuromi, and my melody. also loves invader zim, which it watches with remus a lot. purple is love, purple is life. extremely into scene music, especially 6barelyhuman, black veil brides, sleeping with sirens, and avril lavigne
Janus Young - 32 - they/he
remus’s caregiver and bestie <3 they kin rainbow dash and pikachu. he loves doing makeup and they’re always down to do his friends’ makeup if they ask. collects all things mlp and pokemon. also furbys
Remus Mordecai - 31 - as many pronouns as you can fit in one sentence
talks the least out of the group as he is semi verbal! and when she regresses xe’s nonverbal. it’s special interest is homestuck and fox is a nepeta kinnie. also kit basically always has a pacifier in zir mouth, even in public. ey live with janus, who they may have a slight codependent relationship with (or whatever you’d call the kind of relationship where one person is wayyyyyy more reliant than the other? remus is very attached to and reliant on janus)
so that’s them :3 i love them all, i just wish i knew what to do with this au lmao

ooh or something about Logan getting to relax and shut his brain off. maybe he gets a book from one of the other sides that trances him as he reads it
(hope multiple prompts are okay, feel free to only choose one or none. I just got very excited)
- 👽
okay. okay. okay. sorry for taking literally five months to get to this.
loceit, sub!logan dom!janus, no actual fucking. Hypnosis via reading, probably sort of doubles as an actual induction of sorts? Mindlessness, slow fall, implied hands-free-orgasm at the end, cnc (sort of).
2.6k words, under the cut. this one is heavy on that seduction/siren's call of trance angle.
--- --- --- ---
Logan rubs his temple as he hands in front of his bookcase, trying to decide on what to read. He’s getting a stress headache, it’s been a long week, and he is officially ready to try switch off and at least enjoy himself a little with a good story. Maybe he’ll reread a Sherlock Holmes novel… A Scandal in Bohemia, perhaps?
His fingers ghost along the spines of his books as he tries to make his choice. He loves this part. The anticipation. What to read, what to choose. Though he bites his lip, tilting his head. The decisions are overwhelming sometimes.
Someone knocks at his door. Logan grits his teeth before he answers it, but some of the tension drops away when he sees Janus there.
“Hello,” he says.
“Greetings,” Janus says, and his lips don’t move, but his eyes smile. “How are you?”
Logan blinks. “Um,” his eyes flick around, like it’s trick question. “Fine? …I was looking forward to a quiet evening reading, but… Well, nevermind. ...How are you?”
“Oh, reading!” Janus says with measured delight. “I was thinking of spending my evening the same way. Perhaps we could do so in each other’s company?”
Logan’s expression softens.
“That would be nice,” he agrees. “As long as we keep talking to a minimum. I don’t really want to hold many more conversations today.”
“We can do that,” Janus extends a hand. “Have you found your book, yet? Or will you pick one of mine?”
Logan hesitates a moment, before taking Janus’ hand.
“Well,” he shrugs one shoulder. “None of the books on my shelves are calling to me.”
Janus leads the way, and Logan lets him, and when he’s invited to step into Janus’ room, Logan takes a moment to bathe in the calming sensation that settles over him. The door clicks closed behind him.
“Alright, darling,” Janus says, and he puts a hand on Logan’s back to lead him over to his personal bookcase. “Let’s find you a good book.”
They comb over titles, but Logan finds his eyes drawn to one in particular, a tall, fairly thin book with beautiful midnight blue binding.
“Something caught your eye?” Janus says, his voice light and teasing, and Logan swallows, and pulls it off the shelf.
“What’s this?”
“Oh!” Janus clasps his hands. “I wrote that for you. I forgot to give it to you, silly me.”
“You wrote this for me?” Logan flushes, looking down at it. “Really?”
“Yes, love,” Janus leans in, kisses his cheek. “I wanted to give you something you could really wind down to in the evenings.”
He takes Logan’s empty hand and presses it over the front cover.
“It’s yours,” he whispers. His voice is husky. It makes Logan shiver with anticipation he can’t explain. “If you want it.”
“I want it!” Logan pulls it into his chest. “It’s… it’s very thoughtful, Janus. Thank you.”
Janus smiles softly, and turns back to the bookshelf to take a copy of Dracula, and takes Logan’s arm to lead him to Janus’ nice armchair.
…Janus is being oddly handsy today. But mind you, Logan smiles softly, he does get like this sometimes, he told Logan touch was very assuring for him as part of their relationship, and really, Logan likes Janus’ hands on him.
With a flick of the wrist and a thought, a second identical armchair appears beside the one Logan’s being gently pushed into. Janus pulls it up alongside comfortably, and settles there, in Logan’s periphery. He even puts his feet up on an ottoman, takes the hat off his head and settles it on the coffee table between them, and lounges back, opening his book.
Logan glances at him, and Janus shoots him a soft little smile.
So Logan leans back in the comfortable chair, wishing for a moment he’d thought to make tea before they settled in, before he shakes his head softly, and opens the book.
‘For my dearest Logan,’ The dedication on the first page reads, ‘who thinks too much.’
Logan’s lips twist into a smile, and he snorts, amused. He does notice that there is no title. There hadn’t been one on the front cover, and he tilts his head at it, glancing at Janus, who doesn’t look up from his own book.
It… it must be deliberate, then. Logan shakes his head again, and turns the page.
‘I am going to tell you a story,’ the book reads, ‘that might seem very familiar to you. But it’s a good story, Logan, and one you have always enjoyed, so I don’t think you’ll mind reading it again.’
Logan purses his lips, before he stops to evaluate how beautifully handwritten it is. Janus’ handwriting is just delightful.
‘It is about a man, much like yourself. Always a cliché, I know, but he really is like you. Hard-working, talented, and just so stressed. He never took a break when he should, until he found something that taught him how.’
Logan can’t help himself but raise an eyebrow at the prose, shoot Janus a quick glance, before turning back. This time, he doesn’t see it, but Janus side-eyes him, anticipation curling his lip into a hint of a smile.
‘He found a book. A book! Just like the one you’re holding now. A pretty book, a book filled with pretty words. It fitted beautifully into his hands, like it was made for him, just for him.’
Logan turns the page.
‘And the book started very simply. It taught him ways to relax. And the best, most basic start for relaxation – or so the book believed – was breathing.’
“Is this just guided meditation, or something?” Logan finally breaks his reader’s silence, turning to Janus.
“I thought you didn’t want conversation?” Janus raises an eyebrow at Logan, keeping his expression neutral, and Logan bites his lip and looks away. He did say that. “But… to answer your question… well, why don’t you keep reading and find out?”
Logan rolls his eyes at his partner’s ambiguity, but does turn back to his reading.
‘Yes, breathing. It may seem silly, but it works. The man found all he had to do was follow the instructions the book gave him, and nothing more. When the book told him to breathe in slowly, he did so. When the book told him to hold it, he did so. When the book told him to breathe out slowly, he did so.’
‘Why don’t you try it now? Just follow the words.’
‘Breathe in.’
Logan blinks, shakes his head, but decides it won’t do any harm. And besides, he needs to relax. He takes in a slow breath.
‘Hold.’
Logan does so.
‘Breathe out.’
And Logan let the air out, slow and gentle, and almost feels self-conscious for it. But Janus has gone back to ignoring him.
‘Good,’ praises the book, and Logan blinks at it. ‘That was perfect. Do it again.’
‘Breathe in. Breathe in all the stress and tension you have.’
Logan frowned a little, but did as he was told, sucking in a breath.
‘Hold it, floating, hanging, weightless.’
Those were good words to describe it, actually. He had to agree, it did… feel like that.
‘And breathe out. Breathe out all the tension, all the stress, leaving only relaxation. Relax, let the feeling spread through your chest from your lungs, down your arms and to your fingertips. Down your legs and to your toes. Up into your head and to your eyelids.’
Logan followed the words.
‘Good,’ the book praised him. ‘Again.’
The three printed lines repeated, and Logan did as he was told, and he had to agree with the book, as he read those words over and over, his tension just seemed to drain out of him. His blinking slowed down. It became so hard to want to lift his hand to turn the page.
‘Well done,’ were the first two words awaiting Logan on the next page. ‘Nice and relaxed. Like lying in a warm bath, like napping in the sun. Calm and relaxed, it almost feels like your head could be empty.’
Logan absorbs that line, but frowns a little at it, though now, his frown is little more than a downwards twitch of his lips.
‘It almost seems silly, doesn’t it? The idea of an empty head. But that was what the book told the man. It told him the next step in relaxing completely, relaxing enough, was to make his head empty. But to relax the mind, you have to relax the body.’
That… makes sense? Logan can follow that logic. He doesn’t remember feeling this sluggish before. He lets out a big, long breath, and casts his eyes over the paragraph again before he reads on.
‘The book told the man that his whole body should feel heavy. Heavy like lead. Heavy like lying in a warm bed on a cold morning. Heavy in a comfortable way, a relaxing way. Heavy in a way that he wouldn’t, shouldn’t and couldn’t fight. There was no need to fight it. If the man only let it happen, he would feel so good.’
Logan’s head tips to the side a little as he reads, his blinks so slow. It… it did feel nice to let it all slow down. His legs down felt so heavy, he couldn’t stand up if he wanted to, and he didn’t want to.
‘The book promised the man if he only let it all happen, it’d feel good. If he did as its words said, he’d feel so good.’
‘If he obeyed.’
Logan swallows hard, and goes to frown again.
‘Now, it’s a little silly, again, isn’t it? The word. The idea. ‘Obeying’. The word has strange connotations. There’s a level of mindlessness to it. To absorb what you’re being told, to accept what you’re being told, and to decide to do it. But even beyond that, ‘decide’ implies choice. ‘Obey’ is much more than choosing. Obeying feels better than choosing. The book told the man that he should obey, and as the man read on, he found himself agreeing.’
It… that also… makes sense? Logan can’t argue with that. And… it sounds like he shouldn’t argue with it, either. If he’s supposed to be following the book to relax, it wouldn’t make sense to disobey its instructions.
‘So the man read the book, and obeyed. The man let the book tell him to keep breathing deep and slow, to let his tension go, to let relaxation take over, and to let his body grow heavy, and his mind grow empty.’
‘The man didn’t need to think. He just needed to read and obey. You don’t need to think. You just need to read and obey.’
Read… and obey? Logan swallows hard, and combs over the line again. Read and obey.
‘Read and obey.’
He wets his lips.
‘Good. Very good. You’re so good.’
His lips part. He doesn’t make a noise, but his breath leaves him a little fast. And Logan doesn’t know it, absorbed in the book as he is, but Janus is still holding up his own book, yes, but his eyes are fixed on Logan.
‘You’re so good, doing exactly as you’re told. You’re so good for obeying. Read and obey.’
‘When you read the words, ‘read and obey’, you are going to start feeling something spreading through your body, Logan. It is pleasure. It is pleasure, as a reward for being so good, and for reading and obeying. You don’t need to think. You don’t need to do anything at all, other than read and obey, and feel so very good.’
‘Read and obey.’
Logan swallows again as a warm swell of pleasure washes through him, gentle but persistent, and he shivers under it.
‘Read and obey.’
His breathing gets faster.
‘Feeling so good. Read and obey. Read and obey. Read and obey.’
It crawls up his spine, filling his chest with warmth. It fills his brain, pushing down all other thoughts, all resistance, filling his head with warmth and pleasure. It rests nice and heavy and calmly in his stomach, growing stronger with each repetition, growing downwards, and Logan is barely aware of the way he grinds down a little into his seat as the pleasure fills him.
‘Read and obey. Unaware of anything but my words. Read and obey. Do you know what this is, Logan? This is trance. You are deeply in trance. Read and obey. It’s the truth. You are doing exactly as you are told, and you have fallen so deeply in trance.’
‘Read and obey.’
Logan struggles to keep his eyes open enough to read now, struggles to keep his eyes focussed on the words, but he can’t stop reading, he has to keep reading, he has to read and obey.
‘Deeply in trance. You are mine. Read and obey. Deeply in trance. Deeply aroused and feeling good. You are mine. Read and obey.’
Logan whines. He actually makes a sound. It wanders out his parted lips, so quiet, but it makes Janus grin, and give up all pretences of reading, and he sets down his book and watches Logan’s descent.
‘Fall deep. Fall deeper. Follow my words down, Logan. No more thoughts. No more thinking. Just pleasure. Read and obey.’
‘You want to touch yourself. You want to so badly, but you can’t. You can only hold this book, and read, and obey. Moan. Read and obey.’
Logan moans. It wanders out his lips, more breath than sound.
‘Good boy,’ says the book, and Logan flushes even as he struggles to keep his eyes open. ‘Read and obey. Moan again. Moan louder. Read and obey.’
Logan obeys. He moans again, moans louder, and if he were more aware, he’d hear how Janus’ breath hitches for it.
‘You feel so good. You are so deep in trance. You feel the pleasure building. Building. Building. Read and obey.’
This time, Logan moans unprompted. His hips keep grinding. He’s panting.
‘You can feel an orgasm building. You want an orgasm. You want to cum. You want to cum so badly. But you can’t, not yet, because I haven’t said you can.’
A whimper, this time. Logan’s lips are still parted, he can idly feel something wet leaking past his lips and trailing down his chin. He can’t move to wipe it away. He can only read and obey.
‘You’re a clever boy, Logan, I’m sure you can guess by now that the man in the story is you. We’ve done this before. You don’t remember it, but we have. That’s why it’s so easy to read and obey now. You’re back here, deep in trance, following my words, because this is safe and comfortable, and you feel so good.’
‘You want to cum. Keep reading. You want to cum so badly. Read and obey.’
Logan’s chest is beginning to heave. He can’t look away. He isn’t even aware of turning pages anymore, of his body moving to accomplish that task. He is only aware of the pleasure, and the words.
‘I wrote this book for you, Logan. You obey me. You feel good because I want you to. You obey me because I want you to. Read and obey.’
Logan turns the page, and realises it’s the last one.
And it has two words left written there, in Janus’ beautiful handwriting.
‘Look up.’
Logan reads them, obeys them, lifts his head, and- when did Janus stand up? When did Janus move over him? Logan looks up, mouth hanging open, panting, drooling, empty-headed and desperate, and…
Janus smiles at him. He reaches out, palms up, and closes Logan’s book.
As the book snaps closed, he gives his final order.
“Cum.”

Author’s note// This is kind of a vent one-shot to get my mind off of a dream I had. It is also based off the song, As the World Caves In by Matt Maltese. Enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The world was in chaos. The sounds of car alarms, glass shattering, and screams mixed together as people ran rampant through the streets. The government had announced that all countries came to an unanimous agreement that they were going to nuke the entire world while any rich people and world leaders fled to a new planet. This led to the general public freaking out, causing all hell to break lose. Remus looked out at the chaos outside their window, a solemn expression on their face.
”Mi amor, back away from the window please. There’s too many crazy people out there, I don’t want you getting hurt,” Remus’s spouse, Janus, said. Remus sighed.
”What’s the point? The world’s going to be ending soon… Roman and his partner committed a double suicide when everyone got the message… I’m never going to be able to finish my big project that I’ve been working so hard on… There’s nothing going for me anymore,” Remus said, not looking at Janus. Janus sighed, walking over to its spouse and hugging them.
”I know… But I’d rather spend all the time we have together in our last moments, than have it cut even shorter… Now, come on, let’s spend our time together wisely,” Janus said. Remus smiled a little. The two stood up, Remus grabbing Janus’s hand as the two walked to the living room. The two sat on the couch, Janus turning on the TV and switching to the news. Remus grabbed out a few pens, grabbing one of Janus’s hands. They took off Janus’s gloves and started to doodle on Janus’s hand. They drew many different small tattoo designs as Janus smiled at them, admiring their spouse.
”I love you so much, Remus,” Janus said.
”I love you too, Janus,” Remus said, smiling softly at Janus. The two kissed each other, staying in each other’s embrace for a while before pulling away. Remus continued to doodle on Janus’s hand as the news played in the background. Janus watched the news as the news reporter was attacked on camera by a group of drunk people, the camera soon being ditched on the ground. Janus turned off the TV, sighing as they leaned back on the couch a little.
”Do you think there’s an afterlife for us?” Remus asked as they drew.
”What?” Janus replied, turning its attention to Remus.
”Like, do you think when this is all over, there will be a second life for us where we can be happy and not have to worry about anything?” Remus repeated, looking up at Janus.
”I… I don’t know, Remus… I never really thought about the afterlife… I never even thought this would be happening… But just know… If there is an afterlife, I’ll do whatever I can to make sure you’re a part of mine,” Janus responded. Remus smiled softly at Janus, pressing a light kiss to its cheek before capping their pen. Janus reached over for its phone, connecting it to their bluetooth speaker and putting on their slow dancing playlist. Janus stood up, extending their hand out to Remus.
”May I have this last dance, mi amor?” Janus asked. Remus smiled, nodding and grabbing Janus’s hand. Janus pulled Remus up off of the couch and held onto their waist as Remus put their hands on its shoulder. The two started to slow dance as the music played in the background. The two finished slow dancing as the song ended, staying in each other’s arms. They soon heard sirens blaring, knowing that the nuke for their part of the country was just launched. The two looked at each other as tears streamed down their faces.
”Good night, mi amor,” Janus said softly, placing a hand on Remus’s cheek.
”Good night, darling,” Remus responded. The two shared one last kiss before pulling away and collapsing on the ground, holding each other tightly as the world faded to white.
hello!! i’m a newcomer but i just wanted to say that your series is so friggen amazing <3 i fancy myself some self-care snakebois and anxiety-ridden driderbois. though roman might actually kill me and i’m terrified of him having the ability to make people fall out of love. what a horrifying thought kxjsjdheh??? anyway!!! i have some questions regarding magic because magic yay worldbuilding <3 my bad if some of these have been asked! as i said, i’m a newcomer aha;;
so if taking away a witches magic makes them no longer a witch, can an old enough witch just die on the spot, or are they biologically however old they were physically (like how the royal fam stopped at around 30) and begin aging at a rate normal for their species? if taking away a witches magic makes them no longer a witch, does giving someone magic make them a witch? and if so, are they then immortal or age slower than previously? are any species (that we know of so far) unable to naturally be witches, and what happens if they’re *given* magic without biologically being able to have it? can a person have TOO much magic? what species do we know of so far and are any of them/will any of them be relevant? i want virgil to be besties with the waitstaff again :((( (not a question but it needed to be said). was sleep messing with virgil’s circadian rhythm? probably not but i just wanted to confirm because he’s a vindictive little shit who totally would 👀
will sleep and virge be spider besties now?,,,,pls i need little weave-and-relieve sessions between the two where they just chill and rant n maybe do each others nails or share weaving tips :))) can virgil croquet or sew or knit or something? because he’d love, probably. it’s great for anxiety (probably, i’m so bad at it i wouldn’t know LOL)
i. am going to cut myself off here before it gets too long. have a good day! <3
- OnlyRoomForHope (would be unanon but i can’t be bothered logging in on right account lmaoo)
@onlyroomforhope
Thank you and welcome! I'm so happy to have you here in my own tiny corner of the fandom! Yeah, we love our self-care snake and anxious spider here. Also, wow, ya'll really latched onto that fact about Roman. As long as Virgil and Janus keep their protections up around him they'll be fine :)
A lot of good questions here and for the most part it looks like they haven't been answered before! This is exciting! *crackles knuckles* Let's dive in, shall we?
So if a witch loses their magic and therefore their immortality they don't just drop dead. Their body is still physically the age it was when they stopped aging, they just begin to age again. This applies to humans, fae are already immortal on their own their immortality just works a bit differently.
Giving someone magic does make them a witch. I think I've mentioned it before, but Remy wasn't born a witch, he got his magic from King Thomas. Gaining his own magic made him a witch and came with all of the perks of being one including immortality. Remy is indistinguishable from any other witch.
Thus far I've only put a lot of thought into humans and fae being witches, but I'd say most highly intelligent sentient species can have witches. Especially the humanoid or partially humanoid ones. So most monsters such as naga, driders, merepeople, centaurs, and vampires can all be witches. Dragons, kelpies, harpies, and sirens cannot.
it's also important to note that I said highly intelligent sentient species. That means beasts are not included. So there are no pheonix, unicorn, bear of bears, or bassilisk witches.
Could someone give a beast or non-witch monster witch magic? Yes. Chaos would happen.
No, a person couldn't have too much magic. Exibit A: Thomas. King Thomas has a ridiculous amount of magic. Should he have that much magic? Absolutely not. That shouldn't be allowed. But, hey, I didn't make the rules (yes I did) and it is what it is.
Now, if you're asking if a lot magic can have negative side effects then yes, it can potentially be overwhelming. If King Thomas got all of his magic at once it would have taken a serious toll on him and at one point he did aquire too much at once and it did take a toll. That was a the very beginning of Thomas's reign and he depended on Nico a lot to hide it. After an adjustment period he was fine, though. After that he learned to take magic gradually, one or two witches at a time with breaks in between.
Okay, so so far in the series we know of humans (obviously), fae, driders, and naga. We also know that fae are split into seelie and unseelie. Only humans and seelie are going to play major rolls in the series. As tempted as I am to play around with the many subcatagories of fae and the other species, I'm trying to keep this as simple as I can. We may see them play minor roles as in individual characters but that's it.
That being said, I am planning the brief appearance of a third major species.
Now, there are many minor species of monsters but those all defer to either the seelie or unseelie making fae a major species. Humans are also a major species. The third major species that is indepented of and can stand toe-to-toe with fae and humans is spirits. Spirits will barely appear in the series so I don't plan on doing a lot of wolrd building for them.
So all in all, only humans and fae will really be relevant.
I want Virgil to be friends with the staff again, too ;_;
Remy totally would mess with Virgil's sleep, however he was on Earth up until the day he was introduced to Virgil, so no, he didn't have anything to do with Virgil's sleeping problems.
Remy are Virgil are going to be besties! I am firmly team Those Two Getting Along. They are my babies and I love them, they must at least be friends. There will be classic sleep overs and they will get up to shananagins, so stay tuned for that.
Virgil can weave and sew. He's okay at it. he does it more for stress relief than to be good.
Even more writing asks!
What is your favorite Sanders Sides dynamic to write? Is there a character that is easiest for you to write? One that is more difficult than the others? Is there a character you haven't written yet (such as the Vine characters or anyone from Cartoon Therapy?) that you really want to?
How much worldbuilding did you do for Brothers and Secrets? I loved the, like. Modern supernatural aspects to it. What other sorts of supernatural creatures exist in the world? I assume it's not common knowledge amongst the normie humans, so how difficult is it for the supernatural to stay hidden? How and when did Logan reveal everything to Remus?
Man, have I put off answering this for a long time 😅 But lets see:
Favorite dynamic - Uhh, not sure but probably Janus and Remus? Especially when they know each other so well and bounce of off each other constantly. With Janus encouraging Remus to be himself and Remus supporting Janus in turn 🥰 It works both platonically and romantically.
Character easy to write - Well, they all have their challenges but I like writing Janus the most probably, because his sarcasm is just very fun to do 💛
Characters I haven't written yet - Elliot, definitely. At least I don't think I've written them yet 😅 But I do love them, which is why I mentioned them in Brothers and Secrets.
Speaking of Brothers and Secrets, the worldbuilding is not all that solid actually. I wanted to write a Vampire fic finally, but I didn't think too much about how they work in advance and including Emile as a dryad was mostly an excuse to have Remy want to get rid of the house 😅
As for other creatures, I haven't settled on anything but mermaids, sirens and selkies are most definitely included, as are other nature spirits like the dryads. If I revisit that universe, I might add more.
Yes, most normal humans know nothing about the supernatural but that is mostly because they don't want to. If they truly want to prove it, they could find it with some persistence but sharing hard proof around would not be permitted by most supernatural creatures. If such things happen, witches like Janus take care of it. If you have enough witches, they can basically erase anything they want, even the memories of all of human kind. It's not in their nature to do so just for the hell of it though, so gathering enough witches to try and take over the world is basically impossible.
And Logan didn't have to reveal anything to Remus. Remus had always believed in the supernatural and done some research. It's how he found that club in Liechtenstein that was said to be a popular hangout spot for the supernatural. There he met Lucas, they had a one night stand and the next morning, he ran into Logan in the kitchen. Lucas hadn't hidden that he's a vampire from Remus and it was a big reason why the hooked up.
Thank you again for all the asks, Kye, even if it took me a long while to answer this one 🤭💙
Expected Rating: Teen
Warnings: Temporary Character Death, Piracy, minor violence
Characters: Remus, Patton, Logan, Janus, Virgil, and others I haven't settled on yet for Remus' crew, OC(s)
Romantic Relationships: Intrulogical (more pre-romantic but definitely with heavy flirting and pining)
Summary: As the son of a sailor, Remus had grown up loving the ocean, so ending up becoming the captain of a pirate crew suited him just fine. And while he greatly enjoyed his life, there were some things he still wanted to achieve more than anything:
1. Meet a siren (very plausible, they’re all over the ocean)
2. Find an Elemental Spirit (not as easy, they famously dislike humans)
3. Figure out if Immortals truly exist (very hard, since supposedly they’re humans that have earned the favor of an Elemental Spirit (refer back to point 2))
But for now, he had to find a save hiding place for a little something he stole of another ship a few days back, so he had his crew sail towards the next uninhabited island.
What he doesn’t know is that what he finds there will help him finish up his bucket list earlier than expected and lead to the adventure of his life.
Outline is done but still subject to change.
Me when fanfiction. Forgot how much I love my siren AU lol. Remus is a siren who's not allowed to sing, and Logan is awkward when he flirts. Virgil is falling in love with a different siren he illegally broke out of a lab, who happens to have a twin brother somewhere in the city. Patton is Virgil's roommate and Janus is the head of a criminal underworld and also has a giant snake tail. They're also childhood best friends (sooooo super slow burn moceit). There's an evil government. There's roller skating!!
No cause the way I would periodically check to see if you’ve uploaded another part of the moceit superhero AU and if nothing is uploaded reread, only to find tonight (I have to be up at 5am and it is currently 2 as of writing this) you uploaded another part. The emotional intimacy :((( like it was sexy regardless but LORD the loneliness and the yearning hit harder than I expected. I would love to know Janus’ thought process in those moments, obviously he had his plans for the evening but did he intend to do so with such tenderness? Or is Patton just (unknowingly) pulling at his heartstrings until he caves? Please I need siren’s thoughts on this sweet sexy hero he’s sinking into trance ~ 🌌
Oghskgg oh no!!! I hope you get some sleep :( but im flattered you reread that much
the intimacy!!! It's off the charts!! I think Siren/Janus thinks Guardian is just. Adorable in a sad way, esp before this encounter. That someone who is that easy / eager to please is has to be starved of intimacy or whatever.
But Patton willingly telling hin the full depth, especially in *this* session, when he's solidly in Janus' grasp, I think it's like... oh, I was right. Oh he's sad. I want him to be my little toy /sexy but also I want to fuck the sad out of him.
In part, Janus can use Patton's craving for intimacy as a useful tool to get in closer, and therefore why not. In another part, it's... pity. He'll call it pity because if he uses a different word it may sound like he cares. Oh, darling, who did this to you, etc etc etc
He does care, at least a little. He didn't expect to really care but like. At the start od the 1st part, Patton remembers how they have a hot-and-cold cordial rivalry going on. It never was actually antagonistic and Siren was probably already fond of Guardian in that anime rival kind of way.
Does this make sense?
carry them home (3)
warnings: arguing, mentions of murder/death, tension, cliffhanger
A/N: previous chapter's mention of Silver Guard changed to Iron Guard because i got my lycanthropes and my faeries mixed up :P
-
“Good afternoon,” Janus started, because if he was to be stripped of the element of surprise, he was at least going to handle the situation with grace. “I’m afraid there’s been a bit of a misund– ahm.”
He cut his sentence short, since two undersized hands had descended to pull at his cheeks with a careless, borderline-painful level of strength. Janus didn’t allow himself to wince or sputter at the childish gambit, simply narrowing his eyes and raising his eyebrows slightly into something unamused as he felt crumbs of dried mud tumble off his face.
“Re!” the fire sprite hissed, frozen where he was hovering above the others. “What are you doing?”
“Instigating,” Re replied, the shit-eating grin audible even though he was still standing behind Janus. “He broke Lo’s magic, so I’m tryin’ to see if he can blow someone up with his brain or something.”
Did that imply the kid was trying to get himself blown up?
“My magic didn’t fail,” Logan snapped, hurriedly climbing back to his feet. “Remus, let go of him. Explain yourself.”
Janus resisted the urge to grimace, the sour taste of compulsion rolling on the back of his tongue and then fading away as his makeshift blood rune drained the command of all its power. “Right, because that wasn’t exactly what I was just doing.”
The effect of his words– clearly unburdened by Logan’s charmspeak– was instantaneous, all the children growing tense and shifting closer to each other. Logan’s face went pinched and cold, the fire sprite looked downright alarmed, and Vee looked alarmed and pissed.
On his shoulders, Remus’s hands bit down with bruising force, a clear warning. “Do you want me to kill him?” he asked eagerly, as though excited about the very concept.
“Now, now,” Janus smoothly intercepted before Logan could respond. “That would be a rather poor way to repay a debt, wouldn’t it?”
The words, as always, held weight.
The tufts of feathers that lined Logan’s pointed ears flattened back, giving him the look of an angry cat. “You said you wanted the ring. It was a fair exchange.”
The utter naivete of that little accusation was enough to make Janus sigh, only riling the siren up further. “Humans lie, kid. But for the record, I was actually talking about your sense of hospitality. I offered you no malintent back in town, even gave you advice, and for all my graciousness, I currently seem to be… ah, yes, abducted and held against my will.”
“You unraveled my disguise in a dangerous place,” Logan returned, though some of the certainty had faded from his sharp tone. “I had no promise of safety from you.”
“And clearly, nor I from you,” Janus returned dryly. “I can tell you now, I had no intention of revealing you to the townsfolk, or anyone for that matter.”
The information didn’t seem to be as reassuring as Janus would’ve liked.
“Humans lie,” Logan echoed, his wings mantling slightly as he crossed his arms.
Using his own words against him. The kid was a quick learner, Janus thought with a smidge of amusement.
“True, but the proof is in my actions, not my words. If I wanted to cause you harm, all I would’ve needed to do was pull off your hood in the middle of a town currently crawling with the Iron Guard,” he told them, wishing his hands were untied so he could spread them in an extravagant flourish.
If his magic resistance had startled the children into wariness, his mention of the most notorious fae-hunting guild on the continent was enough to make most of them drop into downright fear.
“The Guard?” Vee spat, shrugging off Pat’s hands to struggle to his feet. “You’re full of it. This is way out of their normal routes.”
How curious, that a fae would speak so confidently about the routes of a hunter guild. Janus would have worried about it more if it wasn’t so clear that there was no lost love between the two.
Instead, he met the child’s poisonous glare evenly. “It is. But there was a sighting of a winged witch at the nearby spring, and so they came swarming down in hopes they’d get a shot at their most notorious enemy.”
Vee’s dark-edged eyes went suddenly wide, and behind him, Patton clasped his hands together in front of his chest and squealed excitedly, sounding remarkably similar to river ice creaking under the force of a current.
Re whooped loudly in response, and the flickering edges of the fire sprite seemed to solidify slightly as a hesitant, hopeful smile grew on his face as well.
Janus narrowed his eyes curiously. That was… not at all the sort of reaction he’d expected for news about the Guard.
“We must be getting close!” Patton said, the edges of his voice still burbling slightly.
“It might not be him,” Vee warned, but even he seemed oddly heartened. “Until we see evidence of the Guard, we don’t even know if the human is being honest or not. And even if it’s true, it’s still probably not him.”
“But it could be him!” the fire sprite returned brightly. “This could be just the lead we need to get our quest back on track!”
“And we could fight hunters on the way!” Remus added, a malicious grin audible in his voice.
“Nope.” Vee pointed at him with the stubborn sternness of someone who’d clearly learned to cut these ideas off at the root. “We are not doing that.”
“There’s no reason to abandon our plan just because of a rumor of a sighting,” Logan cut in, running a hand through his wing to carefully smooth down his ruffled feathers. “Vee’s foresight is a far more reliable method of guidance than hearsay from humans.”
Vee’s face scrunched up with uncertainty. “Is it, though?”
“What if the witch needs our help?” Patton asked, fingers worrying at the edge of his damp shirt. “The Guard could be after him, he could be in danger!”
“We could rescue him!” the fire sprite chimed in, gesturing valiantly with an ember-red hand that was visible within the flames. “And then he’d have to take us with him, right?”
“What happened to figuring out if we could trust him first?” Vee protested, turning half-away from Janus to pointedly cross his arms at the optimistic duo. “We’re not risking getting captured by the Guard for an adult we don’t even know!”
The fire sprite scowled, but Logan cut him off before he could respond.
“If he can’t even defend himself against the Guard, he’s not strong enough to protect us,” he said coldly. “We’re better off trying to find the haven itself.”
The pieces finally clicked together in Janus’s mind.
Oh. How… ironic.
“Ah, I see,” Janus said, and the attention of every child there immediately snapped back to him. “You’re seeking Sanctuary.”
An overlapping cavalcade of voices responded, ranging from “You know about Sanctuary?” to “We don’t have time for this,” to “What would you know about Sanctuary?”
Seeing as Logan was looking a few seconds from deciding to try a second round of enchantment on him, Janus chose to focus on the last one. “I know that it’s not real.”
Patton’s eyes went watery so quickly, it was as though Janus had personally kicked a puppy in front of him or something. Virgil stepped in front of him like he could physically shield him from the words, making a noise like a very angry rattlesnake.
“Many fairytales have a considerable basis in reality,” Logan replied, his expression somehow becoming even more closed off. “That you choose to not believe in the possibility is not—,”
Janus couldn’t help the bitter snort, shaking his head. “Oh, I certainly believed it. Right up until we were standing at the supposed gilded gates and found nothing but dirt and ash.”
“You were seeking Sanctuary?” the fire sprite asked, drifting a bit closer. His feet barely skimmed the ground as he moved, Janus noted with mild curiosity. The sprite was certainly the most ethereal of the lot.
Janus shrugged, forcing a casual air over the old, infected wound that was his experience with Sanctuary. “Fae aren’t the only ones that want to get away from the Guard. I'm telling you now: you're wasting your time. Give it up.”
There was a short gap of silence as that sunk in, and then–
“Liar,” Vee accused, his voice rough and those inky tear tracks visibly darkening. “You don’t know anything!”
Janus rolled his eyes. “Of course, of course. Since I’m so clueless, I’m sure you all wouldn’t mind letting me be on my way?”
“Not a chance,” said Vee, in a tone that promised violence.
“No,” said Logan in the same moment, his tone considerably more contemplative.
“No?” Janus asked, raising an eyebrow in silent judgment of his decision-making skills.
“No,” Logan confirmed. “We’re going to continue on our path to Sanctuary, and you’re coming with us.”
“I’m what,” Janus said flatly.
He’s what?” Three other pre-puberty voices shrieked at varying levels of horror and/or glee.
“A new friend!” Patton cheered, possibly the only person in the clearing who was actually fine with this.
“No, Patton—,” Logan sighed. “We’re taking him prisoner. Having a human around will be advantageous, and if he’s as familiar with the Guard’s typical routes as he claims, it will decrease the risk of our journey significantly.”
“By introducing a whole new risk?” Vee asked, his hands twitching as though he wanted to grab Logan’s shoulders and shake the sense back into him.
“Forcing him is kind of mean, isn’t it?” Patton said with a frown. “Why don’t we just ask for his help, instead?”
“Because, at the moment, there is no evidence to suggest that he is at all trustworthy, and I am not willing to bet any of our lives on a human’s word,” Logan told him firmly. “Let me be entirely clear: if we aren’t taking him with us, we are killing him.”
Patton seemed almost as displeased about the possibility as Janus. “No killing!”
“Dibs on the body!” Remus shouted.
“Dibs on the murder,” Vee grumbled, still glaring.
“I dunno, Lo,” the fire sprite mused. “I’ve never heard of a quest where the guide is a human.”
Logan inhaled, pinched the bridge of his nose for a good few seconds, and then exhaled slowly with a sort of exhaustion that Janus suspected was a side effect of managing four other fae children.
“I suppose,” the siren said dryly, “that we’ll just have to be the first.”
This seemed to be enough to intrigue the other child, though Janus was under no illusion that the fire sprite would particularly care if they ended up choosing the more lethal method of ‘dealing with the human’.
The siren turned and approached him, his magic stirring tangibly in the air. “Shall we figure out the terms of our Deal, then?”
The hairs on the back of Janus’s neck prickled, old memories and phantom pains alike making themselves known at the offer.
In the back of his mind, a little voice encouraged him to turn the tables: offering him exactly the wording he needed to twist this Deal into something that would hurt the other party instead of him in a vicious whisper. It wouldn’t be hard. He’d tricked more powerful opponents before.
With a low exhale, he straightened his back and looked at the ones in front of him directly. The children in front of him, no matter their origins.
“No,” he told them all, his voice composed and unbending. “I’d prefer to be a prisoner over a casualty, but not if it requires making a Deal.
“Find another way to ensure I won’t betray you, or follow through on your promised threat and kill me.”
"Hmph. Of course that'll happen. The bad humans get rich and living nice meanwhile good humans like you get fucking nothing. That being said though..." janus grinned, "Karma is a bitch, as they say. I'm sure if it wasn't sirens that ate her, it would be mermaids. Or even zombies." He chuckled, "My money is on the mermaids. They'll drown her first before killing her, unlike sirens." Janus turned to him, and smiled softly. "Your welcome." That smile...gosh, he looks like such a cute pup sometimes, it's astounding.
"Hm? Why would it matter which time of year it is? Oh, your species don't have fur so it'll be harder to travel in the winter without you freezing, id imagine, huh?"
Janus grumbled when he heard his talking. He didn't wanna get up!! He wanted to stay here and cuddle with his mate!! Hmph... He really didn't wanna get up... Why does he have to get up... Why can't his mate just come up the stairs and cuddle with him?!
Still grumbling, he managed to stand up from the floor and head down the stairs. Though his legs were wobbly. He has eaten some food, but maybe he needs some water, that could be why his legs are wobbling like that. Hm... In any case, he wobbled over to Patton without saying a single thing. He just opened his arms and flopped them over pattons shoulder. He nuzzled pattons neck. "Mhm... My mate... My lovely mate... Beautiful mate... I love you so so much..." guess his wolf side is not done yet. But...at least he isn't hard or ready to mate Patton. It looks like he just needs some cuddles.
All it took was one night. One night for all of humanity to fall.
And for supernatural creatures to rule over earth.
Course, it didn't really happen overnight. It was careful planning between all supernatural creatures over the course of many years. They had to group together in their bitterness of being forced into the darkness for them to attack.
But, now they are on top of the food chain.
And humans are hunted for their meat...or to be made as pets.
One such hunting group is now on the prowl in a forgotten huge mall. In this hunting group is a werewolf named Janus. He didn't want to be here. He didn't like hunting for humans like this. He didn't even like hunting for humans. But he is forced to by his alpha. And it's either follow what his alpha says...or get banished from the pack. Janus knows that he won't be able to survive by himself, even if he could hunt for humans. He can't take down any humans by himself. He needs help. And it's hard even hunting for other types of food by himself-
Janus paused when he heard a faint footstep in one of the backroom offices. His ears rose tall as he hesitantly stepped into the office hallways.
"hello? I don't mean any harm... Listen, if you work with me I can help you out of here... But you need to work with me."
Patton had always been reckless. His older brother Logan reminded him of it enough, as did all his other friends and family. But he'd been good so far, after the Collapse. Logan kept him close, and they found a small group of survivors who'd been like family to them. They worked together, built a small civilization, had a home for once. And Patton was content.
And then Logan was left to die somewhere else, and Patton had... overreacted. He sold them out, recklessly, which bought him some fortune with the group of wolves he'd fed, but left him alone and hiding in fear for his life.
He hadn't expected the wolves to follow him with cooing voices, expecting him to stay with them as their pet and bait. He hadn't expected them to trap him in the mall with no food, water, or chance of escape. He hadn't expected them to turn his hiding spot into a temporary nest.
And now? He was starving, and tired, and only alive cause of adrenaline and the idea that the wolves would find a way to drag him back once they found his body. He wanted out, he wanted free, he wanted to finally see Logan again...
He was wandering in the offices when he heard the voice, having been reckless from starvation. He knew of a small stash of safe food some other poor soul had left, but it was so far from his tiny vent of safety that he hadn't bothered. But he thought it would be safe, cause they'd checked so recently. And now, he's trapped, silent and shaking and praying to a god who never existed in the first place that the wolf would go away long enough to hide in his little hole again.
Prompts: Could we get a sequel to rage? Because I really enjoy batshit Roman and Logan, along with supportive Virgil and Remus. Preferably Patton and Janus continuing having their head in their asses, and Roman and Logan knocking some sense into them. - anon
Both Roman and Remus give tank vibes (in the RPG sense) to me, and also tend to have self-destructive issues. Could I request a fic or AU where both of them keep trying to take the hits for everyone else, and tell each other "you need to stop getting hurt" but can't recognize it in themself? And eventually the rest of the group sits them down and goes "we love you, we want you to be safe, please don't do this?" - anon
May I please request some c!thomas angst? Maybe some my-sides-are-arguing-and-it’s-getting-painfully-overwhelming flavored? - anon
I am way late, I know, but Thomas's birthday is tomorrow, from my timezone at least, so something centered around character him would be lovely (especially in your awesome writing!!) Maybe something with the sides showing the their love for him and/or him expressing it back somehow? I think their relationships can be so cute but from what I've seen people don't often write about them sadly. Thank you for considering this, and extra thanks if you write it! (Ps: sorry this was long 😅)
His ears are ringing. That’s funny. They don’t normally do that.
His ears are ringing. That’s funny. They don’t normally do that. Maybe there’s a bell going off somewhere. Or there are sirens driving by outside. No, no, this is a bit too high-pitched for that. What was it that Logan called it again? Oh, right. Tinnitus. That’s what’s going on. Wait, does he have tinnitus? He doesn’t think so. He keeps his headphones on a reasonable volume thanks to Logan anyway, it’s not normally quick onset like this, is it?
“All I’m saying is—“
“All you’re saying is we completely disregard the progress we’ve made in favor of sliding back into patterns of thinking that have done nothing but harm us, yes, I can see why you think this is a perfectly rational course of action.”
“That’s not what I’m saying! Stop twisting my words!”
The ringing is getting worse. His temples start to throb. He doesn’t remember that being part of Logan’s description of tinnitus. Maybe that isn’t what this is. But then what could it be?
“Janus, if you don’t have anything useful to contribute—“
“Wow, perhaps I should’ve imitated you again, then I would be listened to, right?”
“Hey! Not cool, you slippery snake, that was out of line!”
“And you never color outside the lines, do you?”
He blinks. That’s funny. He thought he was looking up at the Sides. Why is he staring down at the carpet? It’s a nice carpet, though, so maybe he doesn’t mind looking at it. There’s a stain there. Did he spill something?
“Kiddos, kiddos, let’s all just calm down now. There’s been a lot of aggression from both sides, so let’s just—“
“Both sides?”
“There are more than two of us talking, Patton.”
“Both sides of the argument, Logan, that’s what I mean. So let’s all just take a deep breath and—“
“Are you kidding me? He’s the one who’s insulting us! We’re just standing here!”
“You aren’t just standing there, you’re disagreeing with him.”
“And disagreeing is enough to be insulted and degraded like that?”
“Wow, Roman, so sensitive. There’s no need for you to get so upset.”
“Yeah, kiddo, you just need to calm down. Then we can talk about this calmly and rationally, just like Logan wants, okay?”
“You realize we’ve tried that already, right? That’s how we started this conversation!”
Someone snorts. “You remember three years ago when we started this conversation?”
“I believe it’s only been about thirty-five minutes.”
“I was exaggerating for dramatic effect, L.”
“Ah.”
“But Roman, you aren’t being very open-minded about this.”
His chest hurts now. Why does his chest hurt? Is it because he’s thinking about how long it’s going to take to clean the carpet? It’s not that bad of a stain. It must’ve just been tea he spilled. Or juice. Maybe that’s it. Maybe he spilled some juice and he has to clean it up. If he could move, he would go and do that. He should go and do that now.
But there’s something he’s forgetting.
“You have to try and compromise, Roman, that’s the only way this is going to resolve amicably.”
“Come on, kiddo, you’ve done so well with it before, just calm down and then we’ll keep going, okay?”
“Well, I’m not sure I can wait that long, as long as he’s not about to fire off on all cylinders…”
“Janus, just be patient with him.”
A sharp pain shoots through Thomas’s chest and an ache blooms on his cheek.
Right.
Right.
He’d been having trouble deciding whether or not to go to one of his friend’s gallery openings. It was on a day they were free, by design, and they should be able to go. But the reason that day was free was because they’d arranged his schedule so he could have a free day, absent of any obligations or work requirements. If he went to the gallery opening, it wouldn’t be a free day anymore.
Right, right, that’s why everyone’s so mad.
Thomas winces as he feels a hand rub against the warmth on his face. His eyes still haven’t left the carpet, head pounding and chest aching. They’ve been fighting for—oh, what was it that Logan said, over half an hour now? And they’d made no progress.
Because Roman had suggested that one two-hour commitment might be nice since it was something Thomas would enjoy anyway and supporting his friend would be nice too, but Janus had doubled down on this being a free day and Patton had agreed that it would be wrong of them to go to make themselves feel better and—
“Holy shit, Princey, that—that looks bad.”
“It’s fine.”
Patton sighs, disappointment strong enough for Thomas’s chest to ache with renewed zeal, “Roman, you don’t need to be so dramatic.”
“Faking a bruise? Really?” The condescension and scorn in Janus’s words make his stomach turn. “Next you’ll be telling us you need time to ‘recover’ before we can continue.”
Thomas feels cold. It isn’t cold in his apartment. Why does he feel cold? It is always cold? He tries to open and close his hands but they won’t respond. That’s weird.
“Hey, assholes, why don’t you back off for a second?”
“Language!”
“Not the time, Patton, now shut up and let Roman be.”
“My, my, Virgil, how rude. You shouldn’t talk to your father like that.”
“We’re all the same age, you dick!”
There’s a shocked inhale. How did Patton manage to breathe in so sharply? He should try it to see if it’s possible.
“There’s no need for such rudeness, Virgil, look what you’ve done.”
“What I’ve done? What about what you’ve done?”
“I’m not the one shouting!”
“You’re shouting right now!”
“But we didn’t start it, Virgil, you know that—“
“Actually, if we’re counting ‘who started it’ by who devolved into petty insults and making things personal, I believe you did start it.”
“And I’d never dream of disagreeing with you, Logan, what kind of monster would I be if I did that?”
Try as he might, he just can’t mimic the gasp Patton did. Why not? His chest doesn’t want to expand. That’s annoying. What if he needs to breathe?
What if he needs to breathe?
He needs to breathe?
He needs to breathe.
Oh.
Oh, no.
He needs to breathe.
The realization of what’s going on slams into Thomas. He can’t breathe. He’s not breathing. His head is pounding and his chest is aching and his face stings and his ears ring and he can’t breathe.
He can’t breathe.
“Hey.”
The noise of the room dulls out into a soft mumble as someone speaks into his ears.
“Hey, Tommy-Boy. Thomas. Thomas.”
Remus. That’s Remus he’s hearing.
“Sure is, Thomas. Just me. You’re not doing so good right now, and that’s okay, but I’m gonna need you to focus on me for a moment, ‘kay? You’re doing great right now, just stay with me.”
Remus. Remus. He can hear Remus. Remus’s voice is soft and careful and he grabs onto it with both hands.
“That’s it, you just stay with me here. I know breathing is hard but you gotta take a breath, okay? Go slow, then it won’t hurt so much.”
Remus begins to guide him through breathing. This is good. This is fine. He can do this.
“You sure can, Thomas, you’re doing really good. Just another slow breath, okay? That’s all you gotta do. Just like that.”
Thomas closes his eyes and draws another slow breath in through his nose, out through his mouth. It stings a little as it hits the back of his throat but Remus shushes him carefully.
“It’s okay, Thomas, just keep it nice and slow. You’re doing great, just keep coming out of it for me. Shouldn’t be too hard, you’ve done it before, yeah?”
What’s happening? What’s happening to me?
“Your Ego is taking the brunt of the battering that’s happening right now,” Remus explains softly, “so you’re not feeling too good. Roro’s doing his best to keep the worst of it away from you, but there’s only so much he can do while he’s getting treated like this.”
His mind drifts to the throbbing in his cheek.
“Yeah, that’s a bruise. Not on you, on Roro. It’s okay, Thomas, you’re okay. Just keep breathing and come out of it, okay? This is temporary, it won’t last forever.”
After what seems like forever, but can’t be longer than a few minutes, Thomas finally takes a deep breath that reaches all of his lungs and blinks.
Wow, okay, his neck is sore. How long has he been staring at the ground? He winces, rolling it around a few times before looking up at the rest of the room.
The Sides are looking at him. Some of them look sympathetic, some of them look curious, some of them look annoyed. At him?
“No, Thomas,” Remus says, still speaking softly, “not at you.”
“You got overwhelmed,” Virgil says, usual growl softened to a low rumble, “that’s all. Sorry it took me so long to notice.”
Thomas shakes his head. “I, uh, that hasn’t happened to me before. Not like that.”
“My guess is that having all of us—“ Logan motions around the room— “arguing like that was…doing the equivalent metaphysically ripping you apart.”
Thomas winces. “Yeah, that, uh…mhm.”
“My apologies for not noticing sooner.”
“No, no, you guys were…busy.”
“'Were,’ yes,” Logan says, a little sharper, before turning to address the others, “but we’re done for today.”
“What?” Patton blinks. “But we haven’t come to a decision!”
“That is correct,” Logan continues, the chill in his voice making the hairs on Thomas’s arm stand on end, “but we will not make a decision at the expense of Thomas’s well-being. Ergo, we are finished for the day.”
“And you get to make that decision all by yourself, do you?”
“He’s not by himself,” Roman says lowly, turning to face Patton and Janus, “I agree with him.”
“Well, there’s a surprise.”
“Me too,” Virgil growls.
“And me.” Without waiting for anything else, Remus stretches his arms out—Thomas hides a gag—and grabs Patton’s shoulder and Janus’s elbow. “Bye!”
Virgil rolls his eyes a little fondly as the three sink out, shooting a look at Thomas. “You gonna be okay if I leave?”
“Y-yeah, Virgil, uh, thanks.”
Virgil tips a lazy two-fingered salute as he sinks out. Logan glances at Roman. The two exchange a look and a nod that—okay, Thomas is missing something here. But then Logan turns to him and his expression softens.
“Do you want one of us to stay with you for a little while?”
Thomas rubs his arm, trying to get the goosebumps out. “Um…”
“Let me,” Roman says softly, “I can help, if you want. Seeing as it’s…well, me that’s hurting.”
“It’s not your fault, Roman.”
“I didn’t say it was.” He takes a step closer. “But I am the part of you that’s hurt.”
Thomas falters and Logan nods carefully.
“Roman will take care of you,” he promises, “or…perhaps you will take care of each other.”
Thomas looks between them. “Will you two…explain? Later, maybe? You seem…something feels different.”
Roman huffs out a laugh. “Yeah, you could say that.”
“Later, Thomas, we will do our best to explain. But for right now, why don’t you take care of yourself?”
“Okay.”
Logan smiles, a soft thing that he hasn’t seen in a long time, and sinks out.
“Thomas,” Roman says, his expression still soft and compassionate despite the—ouch, despite the huge bruise on the left side of his face, “can I come over to you?”
“Uh, yeah, buddy, you can do what you want.”
“Thank you.” Roman walks over to him and whoa, okay, that’s a bit weird. Yeah, he knows the Sides can move and stuff, but he’s not normally this close to them. “Thomas?”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m here.”
“You sure?” Roman tilts his head and frowns. “You seem a bit…well, discombobulated.”
The memory of the ‘discombobulate’ clip from that one Sherlock movie springs unbidden into his head and he can’t help but giggle at it. Roman smiles with him.
“What?”
“Sorry, sorry, it’s just…discombobulate.”
Roman throws his head back in a louder laugh. “Don’t worry, I’m not about to discombobulate you.”
“That’s such a good word.”
“What, discombobulate?”
“Yes.”
“I have to say it in the accent, don’t I?”
Thomas screws up his face and puts on the worst posh British accent he can think of. “Discombobulate.”
“Discombobulate.”
“That’s it!”
Roman shakes his head, still laughing. “RDJ would be proud of us.”
“We’ll put it on the list of things to do if we meet him, right?”
“When, Thomas,” Roman says grandly, his hands sweeping up into his normal dramatic gesture, “when we meet him.”
“Yeah, okay.”
At the quietly resigned note in his voice, Roman softens, the brazen grin going back to something a little kinder as he stands up and nods to the couch. Thomas goes, sitting down and putting his head in his hands. After a moment, he feels the couch sink as Roman sits next to him.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“What is there to talk about?” Thomas groans and flops back onto the couch. “If I go, I’m either being selfish and doing it to make myself feel better, or I’m putting someone else’s wants above my needs again. Or I’m being selfish by staying in and not going to support my friend, or I’m taking care of myself regardless of how bad I feel about not going.”
“That wasn’t what I meant,” Roman chides lightly, “I meant do you want to talk about how you’re feeling right now.”
Thomas blinks. “I…um…”
“I’m your Ego, Thomas,” Roman says when Thomas can’t find any more words, “I’m the you that gets hurt when things go wrong. I can tell you what I’m feeling right now, but it might help more if you do it.”
“Um…well, my face still kind of hurts.”
Roman nods encouragingly. “What else?”
“My chest feels…heavy? Almost like there’s a weight attached to it?”
“Mhm.”
“And, um…my ears are still ringing. I can’t…it, um…it’s not good.”
“Here,” Roman suggests, prompting Thomas to sit up a bit, “cover your ears with your hands and drum your fingers on the back of your head, just here.”
Thomas tries, a little doubtful, only for the soothing taps on the back of his head to banish the worst of the whining from his ears. His eyes widen and he looks up at Roman.
“Better, I take it, yeah?”
“Yeah, loads better, how did you…?”
“Logan,” Roman says, “he and Virgil—since they’re both part of the Left Brain, they can get into feedback loops with each other and I don’t know if you know this about Virgil, but he really likes to crank the volume on his headphones.”
Thomas shudders. “I can imagine.”
Roman chuckles. “So…Logan taught me how to cope with it and it helps me when Remus and I are bleeding too much.”
“Wait, what? You bleed?”
“Shh, shh, not like that, calm down. Just ‘cause we’re both Creativity, sometimes when we get excited we tend to, uh, the lines between our parts of Creativity can get a bit messy.”
“So it…doesn’t hurt?”
“No, Thomas, it doesn’t hurt.”
Thomas accepts it with a nod. They sit on the couch in silence for a bit, as the throbbing pain begins to ease and they can relax into the cushions. Thomas glances over to see the bruise fading away from Roman’s cheek. His eyes are closed and he looks…peaceful.
“I’d tell you to take a picture,” he says out of nowhere, startling Thomas, “but you see our face every day, don’t you?”
“Sorry, I, um…”
Roman chuckles. “It’s your face, Thomas, you’re allowed to look.”
He cracks an eye open when Thomas stays quiet.
“Or ask me any questions you have.”
“What…happened?” He shifts a little closer on the couch. “You and Logan and Remus, you…last I remember, you were all a bit…”
“At each other’s throats?”
“Yeah.”
Roman sighs, some of the peaceful energy slipping away and for a moment, Thomas wants to retreat the question, try and give some of it back, but Roman speaks.
“We had a talk.” He shifts. “Or, well…talking was involved. Basically, we went to a rage room Remus made.”
“A…rage room?”
“A room full of things designed to be broken so you can let your anger out.”
Thomas blinks. That…doesn’t sound like the Roman and Logan he knows. Remus, sure, but…these two? “…why?”
Some part of him bristles and the question and he winces.
“Sorry if that was rude, I just—“
“No, Thomas, it’s alright, I don’t mind telling you.” Roman sighs and runs a hand through his hair. “I just—the last time someone asked me that question, it wasn’t with the same—they didn’t ask it like you did.”
“…how did they ask it?”
“The same way you would ask someone why they still wholeheartedly support the Harry Potter franchise even after all that’s happened and the new game has been announced.”
“Oh.” He frowns. “Wait, who—“
“One question at a time,” Roman laughs, sitting up a little more. “Logan and I went because Remus and Virgil suggested it. And they were right, it did feel good. We, uh, had a talk before and realized we were more on the same side of things than we thought. It was nice. A good bonding experience.”
Despite himself, Thomas smiles. “Baby’s first act of civil disobedience?”
Roman grins. “Exactly. Ooh, I should look for Captain America’s shield next time. Really beat the toast out of some anti-homeless architecture for flavor.”
“I’m sure Logan would be down with that.”
“Me too.”
They laugh for a moment before Thomas swallows. “…so who…?”
The last of the humor disappears from Roman’s expression and he sighs. “I’m not telling you this because I think it’s your fault, I’m telling you this because you asked for it, okay?”
“Uh…do you want me to un-ask for it?”
Instead of the laugh he thinks he might get, Roman just sighs again. “No, Thomas, you…you have a right to know. It’s your Sides that are the problem.”
Thomas sits up a bit more as Roman turns to face him.
“Can you answer me one question before I tell you? Honestly?”
“Yeah, Roman, I can.”
Roman hesitates. “Do you…do you think Patton and Janus treat me or Logan fairly?”
Thomas blinks. And blinks. And blinks again. Not the question he was expecting to have to answer.
Do they?
Roman is…well, Roman isn’t really shy about what he wants, is he? He’s loud and extravagant and insists on things, so…
Wait, is he?
Thomas furrows his brow.
The last time Roman wanted something it was…the callback. And he didn’t—the whole point of that was that he sent Thomas to the wedding. Which he didn’t want. And then with the wedding, he…well, after the wedding he didn’t do much. That was Patton and Janus fighting.
But hasn’t it always been Patton and Janus fighting? The two of them disagreeing over what was going on? What Thomas was doing? Since when did Roman come into it?
The last time Roman stood up for what he wanted until Thomas shut it down was…was…
Guys and Dolls.
And then Janus had impersonated Patton. And then there had been the wedding. And then—and then—
And Logan, gosh, what happened to Logan?
They’d excluded him from the trial, Janus had impersonated him so many times, they’d…
Oh, god.
Roman is still looking at him, waiting for an answer.
“No,” Thomas whispers, “no, I don’t think they do.”
The sudden wave of relief that crashes over Roman takes him by surprise, especially when the bruise suddenly vanishes and the pain fades. Another smile comes to his face but it glows now, it looks—Roman looks at him and smiles and Thomas smiles back.
“You have no idea how much that means to me,” Roman murmurs, still smiling, “thank you, Thomas.”
He nods.
“So…Logan and I were talking about that, and uh, we got…a bit frustrated.”
“I think that’s fair.”
“And then Remus and Virgil heard what we were talking about and they suggested the rage room.”
A bit of dread curls in Thomas’s stomach. “Did…did Patton and Janus…?”
A darkness flitters across Roman’s gaze. “They weren’t the most receptive to the idea.”
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s not your fault.”
“Isn’t it,” Thomas says bitterly, “they’re my Sides.”
“Yes, they represent part of you and how you think, but you’re not completely responsible for them.”
“So what do I do? I don’t want them to be mean to you! If you—if you need something, I should listen to it!”
Roman just stares at him, a soft smile playing on his lips again.
“Oh.” Thomas’s eyes widen. “Oh.”
“In a roundabout way,” Roman says quietly, “I think I’ve just done what Janus has been pushing you to do. Take care of yourself.”
“I’ll try,” Thomas promises, reaching out as Roman rests a hand on his shoulder, “I promise, I will.”
“That’s the spirit.” His mouth curls up higher. “You know what I think we should do now?”
“Watch that discombobulate clip until I can’t stop laughing at it?”
“You read my mind.”
“My mind.”
“You’re in charge!”
As soon as Remus sinks them into the Mindscape, he squares his shoulders and lifts his chin. Into battle.
“Remus!” Patton crosses his arms and glares at him. “That was inappropriate! We do not sink other Sides without their permission!”
“You’re fine, Dad-bot, you’re not hurt.” Remus flicks a speck of grime from his sash. “Besides, I was helping Thomathy, doesn’t that count for something?”
“Oh, sure,” Janus drawls in that voice that never fails to set Remus’s teeth on edge, “you did just what we wanted, how very good for you.”
Remus grits his teeth. “Like you can talk.”
“Oh, but I can.” Janus grins and his teeth glimmer. “Quite well, in fact.”
“We were in the middle of a conversation, Remus, you can’t just sink us mid-conversation!”
“Wrong!” Remus bounces up and down on the balls of his feet. “You were in the middle of being giant whale penises to Logan and Roman. I was in the middle of trying to keep Thomas from dissociating so hard we ceased to exist. We are not the same.”
“You don’t need to exaggerate, Remus.”
“He’s not exaggerating,” Virgil says, appearing next to Remus, “that was bad, you guys. Like, really bad.”
“Mm.” Janus fixes him with a look. “Bad enough that you didn’t notice it?”
Virgil glowers. “Yeah. If it’s bad enough that I can forget Thomas exists, that’s how much he’s out of his head, me, the literal embodiment of worrying about Thomas, then yeah, Janus, that’s bad.”
Janus looks at Virgil for a long time, before nodding once. Silent. A concession, not an apology.
“Well,” Patton says, clearly doubling down, “then that’s even more reason why you shouldn’t have done that, Remus! You know that speaking directly to Thomas like that can be dangerous, just look at what happened last time?”
Remus growls. “What, me showing up? Is that the big bad boogeyman that you think about? Just me? I don’t know whether I should be flattered or insulted.”
“My, my,” Janus says, his voice sharper now, “how polite, Remus, it seems your manners haven’t gone anywhere at all.”
“Oh, I’ll show you manners.”
“Remus,” Virgil says quietly, “don’t, you’ll just do what they want.”
“Yes, Remus,” Janus drawls, “don’t do what we want, we’re the bad guys, remember?”
“Don’t,” Virgil says sharply, pointing a stern finger at him, “you don’t get to play that card. Not now, not after what just happened.” “And of course, I wouldn’t dream of doing anything without your express permission.”
Virgil is saved from having to respond to that when Logan rises up next to him. “Hey, how are they? All good?”
“Yes. Roman is going to stay and help Thomas recover a little more.”
“Good. You okay?”
Logan nods as Virgil knocks their elbows together.
Their attention is drawn back when Patton straightens up and fixes Remus with a look. “I just don’t understand why you did that. We all could’ve helped Thomas recover, but you didn’t let us make that decision.”
“You did,” Remus growls, “you did make that decision, when you didn’t look at the consequences of your little argument long enough to realize what you were doing. That disqualifies you from helping. Go straight to gay baby jail, do not pass Go, do not collect two hundred goat testicles.”
“Yeah, that’s how I remember the game going too,” Virgil mutters.
“It was going fine!” Patton pushes his glasses up his nose. “You just messed things up like you always do!”
Remus goes still.
“Is that what you think I do,” he asks in a soft, dangerous voice, “you think I just mess things up?”
Patton falters. “W-well—“
“No wonder Roro’s so fucked up,” Remus spits, making Logan flinch, “if this is who he grew up with. At least Janny’s honest about being a lying liar who lies about things.”
Patton recoils as if Remus has struck him and Janus moves protectively in front of him, glaring at Remus. Remus returns the glare with equal fervor.
Janus is the first to look away.
Virgil just shrugs and glares when he tries to look at him and eventually, his gaze comes to rest on Logan.
“Come on, Logan,” he says, trying for coaxing and missing, “surely you don’t think this is all necessary?”
Logan just blinks. “Do you think my opinion will be valuable in this situation?”
“You’re Logic, aren’t you? What does Logic have to say about this?”
“I’m confused, are you asking for Logic or Logan?”
Janus rolls his eyes. “What’s the difference?”
“The difference is Logic would be able to tell you how rude and inconsiderate you’re being without getting upset,” Logan says, his control over his voice beginning to slip, “I as Logan, however, will not. And I will add that you are being cruel.”
“Oh, for the love of—if this is about—“
“Yes, this is about that,” Logan snaps, “and about impersonating me, and about everything else you’ve done in the name of Thomas when all you’ve been doing is clawing your way into a better standing with him at our expense.”
“You get them, L,” Virgil mutters.
“Logan,” Patton says quietly, a hand on his chest, “I have never—“
“Oh, fuck off,” Remus sighs, “you pressed the ‘skip all’ button, and a shit ton of other stuff.”
“And, in case you’ve forgotten,” Virgil says, “you did just bruise Roman right in front of everyone.”
“You have no proof that was me!”
Remus opens his mouth to snap at him when he feels a familiar tingle in his fingers. “Why don’t we ask him?”
Indeed, Roman rises up into the Mindscape and Logan has to blink.
Roman is glowing.
Not just because he’s wearing white, there’s a soft light emanating from him that makes Patton and Janus take a step back. Although judging by the hunch of his shoulders, it’s equally likely that he’s glaring at them so hard they move back.
“Congratulations, Janus,” Roman says and oh, that’s new, “I think I’ve just gotten what you’ve been pushing for this whole time.”
Janus swallows. “And what would that be?”
“Thomas is going to start listening to himself,” Roman says as he walks toward him, “he’s going to start paying attention to what he wants and what he needs. He’s going to start making sure he’s kinder to himself about that.”
Janus blinks.
“That is what you want, isn’t it?”
“Y-yes?”
“Good. Then yes, Janus, you’re welcome.”
Patton clears his throat. “And why are you taking credit for this?”
Next to him, Janus goes white.
“Oh,” he breathes out, “oh, oh, oh, no, Roman, I’m—I’m so sorry.”
Roman turns to look at Patton. “Because the part of Thomas that wants, that is the loudest about when Thomas needs taking care of, that part that Thomas hasn’t been listening to, is me.”
“Roman is the Ego,” Logan supplements quietly, “and he’s the one that gets bruised every time Thomas gets hurt.”
“Oh, Roman,” Janus mumbles, staring at him like he’s never seen him before, “Roman, I’m—I—“
Roman’s hands tremble where they’re clenched next to his sides. “I know.”
Patton looks back and forth between Roman and Janus, his gaze growing increasingly frantic. “But—but Roman, we do listen to you, we—“
Roman just lets out a mirthless laugh.
“—you’re always arguing with us,” Patton tries instead, protests growing weaker by the second, “and we—“
“You’re so preoccupied with the fact that you and Janus are agreeing after so long that you’ve forgotten it’s your fault we’re all like this.”
Patton does flinch at that, his mouth open, staring at Roman.
“It’s true,” Logan says, a little kinder, “you and Janus…when you started to disagree, you split us up. And your disagreement filtered down to all of us. And now that you both agree again…”
He trails off.
“They’re telling the truth,” Janus says very quietly.
Patton looks around at all of them. “No…no, no, that can’t be right, it can’t…no—“
Roman’s fists shake. Remus steps forward and pulls him back a few paces, muttering in his ear.
“Don’t. We’re both bad about taking hits, you’ve taken enough today.”
“He’s not going to understand,” Roman hisses, “not right now, we...I’m done for.”
“You aren’t,” Logan says as Virgil nods, “you’re going to be fine.”
Patton raises his head slowly. His fists tremble at his sides too. “We’ve all had a very hard day,” he says instead of addressing anything that’s happened so far, “so we’re all going to calm down—“
“Aren’t you tired of being nice?”
The room pauses. Roman looks at Logan. Logan looks back.
“Aren’t you tired of being nice,” Logan repeats, “don’t you just want to go apeshit?”
Roman grins. “Yeah, Specs. I really do.”
Remus cackles with glee and sinks them out.
To find my most recent fics, have a look at my writing tag #rowans writings
Hello hello! Welcome to my Fanfiction Masterlist!
Here you'll find all of my fics, and the links to them on Tumblr and/or Ao3!
If you like any of my fics, consider popping over to my ask blog and sending an ask or two!
---
| Oneshots/short fics |
Organised oldest to newest.
The Stresses of Shapeshifting
Janus is struggling to regain control of his shapeshifting powers after they get away from him.
Thankfully, the noble Roman (and the others helped a bit too, I guess) was there to save the day!
In the end, all anyone really needs is a cuddle pile, Disney movies, pizza and... possibly inedible... cake.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Aeroplanes Are Like Shooting Star
Coming to terms with a disability can be difficult, especially when it means you can't do the things you love. When you realise you can't enjoy something you've loved for so long as well you could if or when you were abled.
When you can't make wishes on shooting stars, you make them on aeroplanes instead.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Faeries in the Forest
Virgil promises Roman a day where they'll do whatever he wants, even if that means spending the day hiking in the forest.
When the pair stray from the path and find themselves lost, Virgil worries that it might be the end- that is until they meet a seemingly friendly fae who promises to lead them back to the path free of charge...
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
The Official Sanders Sides Emergency Sleepover
Patton decides that with the recent tensions in the mindscape after their last video, the best course of action would be to host a sleepover.
Somehow, it didn't end in a complete disaster, despite the two gatecrashers, Roman's inability to cook, Logan's complete cluelessness and Virgil's incredibly long list of doubts.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Not Good Enough For You
Remus and Roman are struggling to cope with their own issues alone, but maybe, if they were only to bring it up, they could help each other.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Putting Yourself First
Virgil didn't go to the wedding because he knew it would go to shit. He didn't quite realise he would have such an influence whne it came to dealing with that shit afterwards.
Or, Roman is very upset by the proceedings after the wedding and turns to Virgil for help.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Flu Season
Roman is sick, despite not wanting to show weakness and impose himself on the other sides, he really, really just wants a hug.
| Ao3 |
----
Duelling
Roman and Remus are both sore losers.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Stressed Bakes
Patton channels a little too much stress into his baked goods, everyone feels the consequences.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Potions of Persuasion
Roman goes to Virgil for a little magical assistance in making his relationship with a prince from another kingdom possible. How can Virgil possibly say no?
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Taking Breaks
Roman is thoroughly overworking himself, Virgil steps in and gets him to take a break.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Assassination
The plan to assassinate the prince was simple, get in, stab him in the back, get out again. Easy, simple, very little room for error.
So how the hell does that end up with the prince not only still alive, but now accompanying Janus and his friends who all plotted and actively attempted to murder him? I hear you ask.
Well the answer is actually quite simple: Both Janus and the prince are very, very gay.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Siren Boy
Janus foolishly sings along to a siren song and somehow ends up with a siren interested in something other than murdering him. (roceit)
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Perfectly Okay
Roman knows it's bad when his only escape is a cat cafe a town away and a barista he barely feels like he knows, but when his soulmate kicks him out of their shared apartment, Roman finds he has no one else to turn to but that same barista.
But maybe everything will be ok, right?
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Hurts Like Hell
Losing a friend sucks, somehow it's even worse when they were still there, only just out of reach.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Fit For Kings
Janus is stressed out and overwhelmed by a discussion that quickly devolves into arguing, Roman sets about helping him - and Virgil too - out in the most extravagant and perfect way possible.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Proper Wing Care
Roman isn't that great at taking care of his wings himself, so Virgil has to step in sometimes.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Primroses and Periwinkles
It was a normal day when it first started happening.
Roman thought he might’ve been getting sick. It was winter, and though the sides weren’t as easy to infect with diseases like the flu he was pretty sure it was still possible - he remembered Patton being sick a few times, at least.
And then, one day, when he and Virgil had been playfully bickering on the couch - another debate about which Disney movies were better that had him laughing and blushing - the petals started to appear.
| Tumblr | Ao3 |
----
Where the Ashes Settle
Roman was prepared for normal day, leave the hotel, get coffee, go to the station and head home.
He hadn't made room in his schedule for getting caught up in a villain fight, nor getting kidnapped by the villain and his arch-nemisis, though.
| Tumblr | Ao3 |
----
Into the Snake's Den
Things going missing in a household of four wasn’t uncommon, really. It was normal enough to misplace a sock on laundry day, or get one of your shirts mixed up with someone else’s and never see it again, or misplace one piece of jewellery from a set. Losing things was not out of the ordinary, what was out of the ordinary was just how often it happened for this particular household.
Logan theorised they potentially had borrowers, and if that was the case Patton was content to let them stay, though Roman had always brought up the point that who - or what - ever the culprit was, it was stealing items much too large to be a borrower. Patton had offered the idea that perhaps it was a fairy, or a spirit who lived nearby, in which case the group was even more eager to drop the issue.
That was until something important went missing a few weeks later.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
The Lost LIbrary
The Library was, first and foremost, a sanctuary. The Library was infinite, The Library was filled with things - all anyone could ever want. Those who lived under The Library’s roof were happy. The Library was, to Virgil, nothing more than an extravagantly decorated prison.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Your Friendly Neighbourhood Cryptid
Roman is determined to prove that his friend Patton's fears of a spider cryptid in the forest was unfounded, so joined by his best friend (and maybe crush) Janus, he ventures into the forest at night. Surprisingly, the night takes a surprising twist.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
The Haunted House
It's boring being a ghost. At least Virgil has two lovely boyfriends to spend his afterlife with.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Fairytales : In Which Virgil Kills Some Plants.
Virgil ends up on a quest in the imagination he didn't agree to. Through which he ends up slaughtering some flora, almost stabbing an old woman and expessing his hatred for a staircase in his quest to rescue his beloved from his own woes.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
The Knight and the Cellar Boy
Virgil's father sets him an impossible task, Roman sees that injustace and takes it upon himself to make that task possible.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Smile Wiped Clean
Roman loves his job. He loves to be creative, to make things, to put everything he has into his work. Roman loves his job. He does. He loves his job, but he struggles to get it done sometimes, the pressure is overwhelming, the criticisms feel like splinters digging into his skin, working on a script can sometimes feel like he's being asked to cut off his own hands. What is he supposed to do when he has to love his job?
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
We Might Not Have A Tomorrow (Please Let Us Have A Tomorrow)
There was a prince from another kingdom that Roman’s parents wanted him to marry. He’d meet him at the Royal Ball in a days time, the same night they were to be engaged. Roman didn’t want to date - let alone marry - someone he didn’t even know. Not when he already had someone he loved right here.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Never Did I Truely Hate You
Janus doesn't expect any of the others to want him around after he's accepted. Even Remus has been acting off. So, of course, the most sensible course of action would be to avoid the source of hurt entirely. Virgil does not agree.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Where the Wild Wildflowers Grow
Roman and Remus Crowfeather had been borrowing in the witch's house since before they could remember. With no parents or others of their kind they were alone, which was fine because they had each other. They looked after each other, they didn’t need anyone else.
Tagged: NewYears Verse
Mine was a World of Rooftops and Love Songs
Virgil is invited to a New Years' party and without an excuse not to go he can't turn it down. Who knew that all it takes to make friends is bad punctuality and sensory issues? Honestly, Virgil wished someone had told him sooner.
AKA: Virgil goes to a party, freaks out and ends up on a rooftop with his best friend's brother. Alls well that ends well, I guess?
(Vi)vianne Marie Zephyr
Here’s a list of things that Vivianne Marie Zephyr knew.
One, she was twelve years old.
Two, twelve-year-olds should not be trusted to make their own decisions.
Three, twelve-year-olds didn’t know anything about themselves or the world. (at least, according to her extended family they didn't).
Four, Vivianne is not a girl.
Patton Darling Heart
How can a mortal baby befriend four fae courts, their leaders and their queens in less than five years? How does said baby grow up with such a strange family? Well...
Patton Heart knew he wasn't like the rest of his family, he also knew that his situation was an unorthodox one. He also knew that one family wanted him and the other didn't, so to be honest, Patton was pretty happy with his weird and wonderful life.
Almost, A Light in the Dark
"In almost any case, we embrace you," Virgil had said.
Roman knew he hadn't meant it like that, Virgil would never say something so cruel. That didn't mean he could stop thinking about it.
It didn't mean it wasn't true for the others, either. ---- A look into Roman's buildup to becoming a dark side in my Darkside!Roman AU
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
Dragon Heart
There are a few things that come with becoming a dark side, one of which takes Roman a little by surprise.
Fortunately, he has a fantastic boyfriend and a... maybe not quite as helpful brother to get him through it.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
Dragon Quest
Roman is missing,and Janus enlists Virgil and Remus' help to find him. Together they end up on a quest through the imagination, ultimately leading them to... a cuddle pile??
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
Squish
Things may be better, but Roman still struggles occaisonally. Remus is happy to help him out.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
More Than Human
More Than Human
At his very core, Janus was human. One might say he was more than human, being a God, but being more than something doesn’t take away from that something, it just adds onto it.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
Chocolate Chip
Roman returns to the temple with cookies. Janus makes a tiny bit of progress.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
The Supernatural Collage AU
Ship of Dreams
“You know - they say this ship can’t sink, it was all in the papers, impossible - they said.” “Yes, that’s what I’ve heard,” Roman shrugged, shifting just a little closer. He wished he could wrap his arms around him, press kisses to his cheeks - pink with the cold - but they couldn’t, not in public. Roman hoped that was something that would change one day. “If… if she did sink - what would we do?” Virgil asked, eyes still trained on the frothing wake the ship left in its path. “Why, I’d swim us to America, of course, I promise,” Roman said, reaching over to brush his fingers over Virgil’s jaw, so he’d look over at him, “But she won’t sink, don’t worry so much my darling.”
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
The Ghost and the Painting
What happens to Virgil after he dies in Roman's arms after the sinking? Maybe he was there in spirit all along.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
What Came Before?
Roman meets Virgil in an… unfavourable way, but they make something together anyway - even with Roman's secrets.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
| Long Fics |
Organised oldest to newest in terms of first posting.
Crown Princes and Butterfly Wings
When Crown Prince Remus of Dalandaire goes missing overnight it's up to Roman, his brother, and Logan, his best friend, to find him.
But for how long will Roman be able to keep his secrets? How long will it take Logan to admit his feelings for the cute human they dragged along for the adventure and how on earth do they keep getting quite so off target?? (Currently incomplete, on hiatus)
Across Land and Water, Forever and Always
My Sanders Sides Gift Exchange fic.
After Patton and Logan are selected to attend the annual meeting between merkingdoms, they expect an easy enough swim up the river to their destination. Unfortunately, for reasons unknown, the river no longer flows as strongly as it did and because of it they can't make the journey in the traditional way.
Together, along with two other magic folk who they... may have accidentally roped into their journey... must now find their way overland to complete their journey instead, little did they know that this particular adventure would change their lives in ways they could never expect.
The Choosing Ball
The law is clear and very very simple: Janus must choose someone at the ball to become his future husband or wife. He would have two days to pick and at the ball they would choose. If he refused or wasn't chosen, he would be considered an outcast, a criminal against the state. Easy, simple, there was just one tiny problem.
Janus was already in love with someone else. Someone who he didn't have the option to choose.
Fortunately for him, Prince Roman doesn't seem to see that as a problem at all.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
We'll Save You
Janus finds himself stumbling into problems like one stumbles over rocks on the road, except some problems are a little worse than others. But when he finally stumbles into someone who isn't like everyone else Janus' had met so far in this unforgiving world, he thinks that maybe there is some merit to the world after all.
----
To Make a Heaven of Hell
Virgil knew he was dead, somehow. And somehow death was loud and bright and overwhelming, the people within it were beautiful and diverse and strange and the places big and magical and wondrous. But it was hard to accept that you are good, after a short life of being told that you are bad. Sometimes, all it takes is a little help, some hot demons and a whole universe full of new friends and family to get you to accept your paradise.
Ribbons And Rainstorms
Roman Edevane has been terrified of storms since his twin brother's death when they were small children. He sits and he watches the dark clouds roll from his window, too afraid to sleep but unable to tear his eyes away. Then, one night, lightning strikes the temple on the hill and he forgets all about the storm in his rush to protect it. When he finds not a burning temple, but the God of Storms himself.
After that he kept coming back—Why? He wasn’t sure, and though meeting the god responsible for the storms doesn't abate his fear completely at first, Vi was… nothing like Roman could have ever expected. The God of storms was kind, he was sweet, a little shy and not to mention a whole other level of handsome. Somehow Roman can’t help but fall for them.
But he can’t be in love with a God… can he? Even if he was, could a God ever love him back?
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
Over The Rainbow
Reds oranges and pinks almost always took centre stage in his drawings and paintings - after all, they were the only colours Roman could see, but the backgrounds were always made up of shades of grey - for him - that would be bright, vibrant colours for everyone else. They represented how he saw the world, and being honest… Roman was a little scared for it to change.
Later on, he would wonder why he worried.
He saw blue first
The Spiders' Forest
The forest was dangerous, they said. That's the spider’s place.
Roman and Remus Taylor lived in the village of Dumhan-Collie, a sad, dingy little town along the edge of an equally sad, dingy forest. Most of the people who lived there were miserable, angry or both and the collective dream of the town was to leave it far, far behind.
Most visitors didn’t stay long, and those who did tend to regret it quite quickly.
The main reason for all this? The spiders.
----
A Swallow's Symphony in Spring
Roman, Prince of Hirundia, and now heir to the throne after the tragic death of his older twin was perfect. He stood up straight, he did as his mother commanded and he said everything that they wanted to hear. Roman was not suffering, because Princes do not suffer. At least not in the eyes of their kingdom. A revolution brews in the back alleys and streets while Roman remains unaware, a new Royal guard joins their force as Roman’s personal guard and despite their first impressions he warms up to Virgil quickly, and despite everything, Virgil seems to like him too - but when everything falls apart and the palace is seized by the people, what was Roman supposed to do with the fact that he was in love with a traitor?
