curly squeezes ponyboy’s hand, pushing his shoulder into his as the ground rumbles with the sound of a familiar car’s tires infront of them.

“get in the car, pone.” darry leans his head out, anger visibly present on his face. he grinds his teeth together when ponyboy makes no rush to push himself into the passenger seat. “ponyboy. get in.”

curly glances at darry, then back at ponyboy before he stands up and walks over to the car.

“i just wanna say-“ darry glares at him, but lets him continue. “-ponyboy didn’t do nothin’ it was me, he was just there.” he pauses, leaning in so that he can’t hear. “you gotta be good to him, he’s all messed up again.”

darry frowns at that, peering over curly’s shoulder at the obviously distressed ponyboy who had his head resting into his scraped hands.

darry pushes his door open, lightly shoving curly out of the way and squatting down next to ponyboy.

“pony,” he starts, voice soft in the way hes been using more and more often since windrixville. “you gotta get in the car, i’m gonna take ya home.”

ponyboy barely twitches, salty tears dropping through the gaps in his fingers.

darry wraps an arm around his shaking shoulders, making comforting whispers and noises into his ear.

ponyboy shifts, lifting his head up to reveal his red and swollen eyes.

“i ain’t runnin’ away again, i don’t have to this time. right?”

darry inhales sharply, exhaling even more so.

“no, no honey. you ain’t even in trouble, just had to fork over a bit of cash ta get the cops off your backs.”

“johnny’s disappointed ain’t he?” darry’s eyebrows furrow in response. “i promised him..-“

“johnny ain’t here to be mad, pone. and even if he was, he wouldn’t be.”

curly, for once, has nothing to interject with. just filled with the everpresent sense that he’s messing with something bigger than he can tame.

he slides back onto the brick wall next to them both, gulping slightly.

“cmon pony, it’s gettin’ cold and i bet you’d rather be in bed.”

ponyboy’s tears finally dry on his cheeks and he stands up.

“i know he’s gone. i dunno why i thought-“

darry kisses the top of his head and rubs a fist onto his chest.

“he’s still here, pone.”

“that ain’t good enough.”

A headcanon I gained in the shower and haven't stopped giggling about:

Ponyboy is probably going through or about to go through puberty, and when his voice begins to crack due to his voice changing, the gang calls it "whinnies", as in the whinny of a horse.

God, the way that Pony HATES it. It's bad enough his voice is cracking in the first place!! He's tired your honor, let the horse jokes GO. But alas...they won't. No matter how many offended glares he gives.

never getting over the fact that at the start of "the outsiders" when ponyboy is getting jumped, while the rest of the gang goes after the socs who attacked him, darry is the only one who goes straight to ponyboy to make sure that he's okay, he doesn't even think to go after the socs, his only priority is going to his baby brother and making sure his baby is okay
