Favorite Games? that's gonna be a list holy hell. I apoligize in advance but thank you very much for sending me the ask @maudlxne ♡

So obviously The Legend of Zelda - Games like I played 99% of them and I geniunely just adore Hyrule so much. Especially TP, SS, BOTW and Minish Cap made me so so so happy to play. Easily some of the best games out there!

Then I have to say Kingdom Hearts. I've played those since they came out. God. I absolutely LOVE Sora and Riku, Aqua, King Mickey, Axel, etc. those games have made me laugh & cry!

Pokemon Games! All of them! Nothing to say besides I remember playing them on my Gameboy Color and god. That joy never left me. I have a switch nowadays and I'll never not play them.

Stardew Valley! I 100%tet the game a couple times alone & with others. You can also mod it. It's such a fun, relaxing game!!! If you love indie farming and romance games I can really really recommend it. The creator makes all updates for free and the base game is like 15 bucks. I have easily a couple hundreds of hours in it.

Monster Hunter! Easily some fave titles there! No need to explain just always fun to go on hunts with friends and/or my husband.

Divinity: Original Sin 2!! As someone who plays DnD with a group and has been doing so for a couple of years now, Div2 hits all my spots. it has some Pathfinder-esque elements too. the game is absolute ingenious and came out a couple years before Baldurs Gate 3. it's a lot of hecking fun! I can recommend it!!

Dragons Dogma & Dragons Dogma 2; absolutely wonderful games. Esp DD2 did a lot of Quality of Life changes. The game plays beautifully, the combat is so so fluid and never boring. I love the story and choices. I think I got like 200 smth hours trying to get all the Endings and maxing out my Affection Level on my pawn.

& last a classic: Terraria!! Another small game I have so many hours in. This game is serious fun with friends and never stops being relevant because of mods & updates!!

Why do you love the Legend of Zelda? What first drew you to it?

Hmmm... This is a good question

Long story short - The puzzles and the characters.

The ramble here :D

So I first got into Zelda because I was looking for an open-world game I could sink a bunch of time into over Covid. ( I was a non essential worker so was not working at the time.)

So, when I found out that BOTW was a thing on my switch after my animal crossing phase was done I decided to give it a try. Having never played a Zelda game before I won't lie I was more in it for the exploration.

But then I started to think about it, I'd heard about the Zelda timeline and I had a friend back in school who was obsessed with the series and played it all the time when we were at his house.

After finishing BOTW and really enjoying how the mechanics and the dungeons I did a little digging. I'd heard that a lot of them were story-driven games and they are some of my fave games to play when I have the time to play them so I decided to look into it a little more.

Then Skyward Sword came across my desk so to speak.

As my first entry into the actual world of how a Zelda game works. (story based with dungeons that you follow a linear path to obtain for the most part) I FELL IN LOVE.

As you know I love Skyward Sword a healthy amount but when I say it flew into my top 5 in the first 5 hours of me playing it dear god I've never had a game change my mind about something so fast.

The characters, the atmosphere, the story, the puzzles, I love everything about it. It made me feel something again with story franchises that I'd not felt since playing The Mass Effect series.

As I continue to explore the worlds that are the Zelda universe and timeline I find myself drawn more and more to the characters and the puzzles. I love problem-solving in games and Zelda dungeons are challenging and I love it.

My most recent fave was Traversing through the City in the Sky from Twilight Princess. I LOVED trying to figure my way and puzzle my way through that. It was so much fun! (I always have something on hand just in case but most of the time as some things i defo needed a nudge but I love that. Because even then you get the satisfaction of being able to go OHHHHH when you get something figured out.

I love this franchise man, and im so happy that I get to experience these games. And that people are excited with me, and I love being able to solve these things at my pace and not feeling bad about it either. (Rather than some places where people just wonder why you can't understand something when you've never done it before.)

It's gained a special place in my heart. And I'm so glad I decided to pick it up over the other choice at the time. (Which now i can't even remember)

English was the easiest for me, but my favorite was algebra/geometry. Must be the puzzle-loving side of me.

Right now I work from home full time, and that’s as good as it gets, I think - not having to drive to work, dress in office clothes, and all the social interaction that my introvert self hated. But I’d really rather be independently wealthy and spend all my time doing things I actually love doing without worrying about being able to pay my bills.

Honestly, I wish I knew. I know there’s one other bit of Fi’s dialogue that they omitted too. It’s in the Ancient Cistern when you first see the boss key location. Which okay. Understandable. But in Eldin and Lanayru there’s some of Fi’s text like, Hey Link. You know what’s behind this door? The boss., that I thought they would remove since in Faron it’s trimmed down, but nope.

I’m not 100% sure what else has been removed but I don’t see why they felt the need to remove birds from a wall when some of the textures in the later parts of the game don’t even feel “updated” at all. Like when you fight the pirate boss on the Sandship. The floor texture is really bad. Or some of the pictures in the houses (like in Bertie’s house) or the map on Gorko’s scroll not being updated. :/

I really feel like some parts they spent a lot of time on and then others they completely forget about. Like Skyloft and Faron for the most part look really good and then you get to Eldin and Lanayru and Idk. It doesn’t look updated to me. (The only exceptions for Eldin being the boss rooms for both Scaldera and Ghirahim. Scaldera’s is now this weird greenish colour and the boss room with Ghirahim isn’t as red as I remember.)

my depression tips:

* whenever you go to the bathroom, try to do one hygiene task like brushing your teeth, moisturising or washing your face, bc ur already in there so you might as well

* leave out clothes in the bathroom so if u feel like you have the energy to shower you don’t have to waste time on picking out clothes, you can just get straight in

* if u wanna shave but you don’t have the energy, u can get an electric shaver and shave in bed, you won’t get as much hair off but it still does something

* get some of those one time use, water free toothbrushes and keep some next to ur bed, and use some water and any empty bowl or container to spit the toothpaste into. you can also keep a mini mouthwash next to your bed

* for food, try to get ready made meals and frozen meals. i keep a mini fridge in my room with drinks and snacks so if i can’t make it down to the kitchen i have something to fuel my body with

* if u can’t clean your room, make a list in order of priority (mine is floor, bed and surfaces) and whenever you feel like u can or u get a random burst of energy, just do a little bit

* keep a waterbottle next to your bed, and if you have clean tap water refill it whenever you go to the bathroom. i usually use fizzy water and squash so i feel like i’m drinking soda but it’s much healthier

* if u can’t get out of bed but wanna feel more clean, change your underwear and your shirt, then use some dry shampoo and wipes on ur armpits and sweaty areas

* if u have pets, make them a priority bc they need you to live, and they care about you so much, so spending time with them will make u feel better and loved

* if u can’t brush ur hair, don’t tie it up bc it will turn into a rat’s nest and you just don’t wanna have to deal with that. even detangling it with your fingers is better than nothing. also braiding it will protect it

* if u can’t sleep, lying still and closing your eyes still is rly good rest, and if u don’t wanna be alone with your thoughts you can listen to a podcast (any true crime or mythology ones are my fave)

* buy multiple pairs of ur comfort outfits so you always have something you want to wear to change into

* try to get up and open your window to air your room out of the smell, incense also works well to cover it

* to keep you entertained, here are some ideas:

* listen to ur fave songs, podcasts or an audiobook

* browse some social medias (tiktok, reddit and tumblr are my faves)

* join a discord server and just kinda idle on that and watch ppl chat

* play a mindless game on ur phone or if u have a handheld device like a switch (on my phone i love life is strange and on my switch i’ve been playing legend of zelda: breath of the wild)

* read some fanfics on ur phone (all the young dudes is a must read)

* kids activity books of ur fave fandoms are rly fun

* read some webtoons (heartstopper is amazing)

* watching a game play through on youtube (minecraft and skyrim ones are my faves)

* rewatching ur comfort movies or watching some funny cartoons

* if u have a laptop, download sims and play that

guess who just beat Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity?

THIS GUY! But don’t worry, no spoilers here

so like, I loved Hyrule Warriors back on Wii U, its even better on Switch, I sunk 100s of hours into each version.

40 hours of this one within a week of release and i can say its better than the first one. Which is great, that’s always what you want from a “sequel” right? I love this game, can’t stop playing it. It’s taken ALL of my free time and I’m definitely gonna work to 100% it

really quick character thoughts

Link - Spear moveset is my favorite, one handed sword simple, good, master sword lasers great and two handed sword feels STRONG

Zelda - took me a good while to get used to her slate. i’ve def improved but its tricky

Impa - Really rad, just a really fun character. Early on i had no idea how to trigger “Absorb symbols” XD i learned and that just made her even better

Mipha - For a character i don’t really care for, her playstyle is so dang fun. its fluid. fitting!

Revali - guy may be a jerk but he got the skill to back it up, his aerial combat is a blast (haha bomb arrows that was unintentional)

Daruk - i’ve had the attack speed+ on him the entire game so i don’t really notice his slowness, he a tough guy and laughs at all Talus enemies with his bombs

Urbosa - Can you say BEST? cause i can. She’s the freaking BEST. My #1 fave to play as. her special attack clears everything, her thunder enhanced finishers clear everything. she just destroys everything. 100/10

Characters are great, game is great, its all fun, story was super entertaining.

did you wanna spend more time with the champions? HERE YOU GO AND ITS AWESOME. that was the selling point for me and it delivered on it bigly

MY favorite fic? oh JEEZ UM What Hyrule Hadn't Seen is the newest and the shiniest so imma go with that one even though it's statistically one of my least popular ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

1. What inspired you to write the fic this way?

hm... what does "this way" mean, i wonder? i used words... how else was i gonna do it? in all seriousness, i went into this fic with zero planning (it was supposed to be a one shot drabble! dhkdjdjekdj) and i've been flying by the seat of my pants for a while. i do have an outline now, so i know where the story's headed, but, well... i have a habit of rambling straight off the outline and into eighteen other random scenes that are TOO FLUFFY FOR THIS FIC IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE ANGST but i have to keep them cuz they're cute ;-;

i did switch perspectives, which i guess is a structural thing, because i wanted to show contrast between my usual style of prose with vivid visual imagery and description of body language and just... the void. fun times, fun times indeed.

but actually while i'm rambling about this fic, the inspiration to blind the poor boy in the first place came when—get this—i set up a server with a friend of mine where instead of Twitch Plays Pokemon, Discord Plays Zelda!! We decided to play a Link to the Past and it was probably a bad idea because THAT GAME IS HARD but anyway our poor boy, Legggy, was struggling to walk through doors and not bump into walls so we joked that he was blind and... um...

twenty thousand words and multiple research rabbitholes (ahaha get it because rabbits and legend), we have this monstrosity which is (nervous laughter) going... places.

3. What’s your favorite line of narration?

OH JEEZ. THIS IS A VERY DIFFICULT QUESTION HHHHHHHHHH

okay so I’m super proud of that wall of “What Hyrule hadn't seen was”s at the end of chapter one because that gave me the name for the story which I’m super proud of cuz like,,, Hyrule isn’t there for Legend’s adjustment and emotional recovery, which is like,,, the entirety of the fic. So the fic really is What Hyrule Hadn’t Seen. Because he’s not there for any of it! Also, to people who don’t know who gets blinded, the title implies it’s Hyrule but then Sky makes that comments about Hyrule being the blind one and yes I am having way too much fun with this.

also I have a lot of fun with blending skfhjasklfjhads accidentally wrote blinding narration and internal monologue. Like it’s written in third person, but the... what’s the snazzy word... NARRATIVE DISTANCE (is that it?) is super minimal.

also anytime I describe magic because that’s so fricken fun to write and also people really like it and I’m touched ;-;

11. What do you like best about this fic?

okay so I grew up with Toph and Edward Elric so badass disabled characters are like my favorite thing ever so even though I myself am abled, I wanna try and do my part I guess. I did a whole bunch of research and blind people are super capable and generally adapt. They just want to be respected and accommodated. I was reading this account that mentioned offhandedly that the people who know the person who went blind generally take it worse than said person and... yes. So yeah, I really like being able to use this fic as an opportunity to show that like blind people can be badass too and no they don’t need earthbending to do it.

also, if I’m being perfectly honest, my favorite part of this fic is the reception?? Like I can’t walk two feet on the server without being recognized as Blind Legend Girl™ and I get so much love and comments and... FANART??!?!?!??!?!?! I have perished more times than I did in my Link’s Awakening playthrough from all the love and affection I’ve gotten from ya’lls ;-;

And now, over one full month since I got this ask, will I finally actually finish and post it jeez ;-;

current progress: finished Freeing Korok Forest as my last major story battle + completed most of the sidequest ones that are open to me

which means that I have several more playable characters, WHICH MEANS it’s time to discuss my thoughts on everybody and how their combat styles work with my own preferences!

we’ll go in order of recruitment, okay, and yes I am going to include the Divine Beasts I’ve used so far, since they don’t all fight exactly alike

Link: good, solid, dependable Link! I enjoy that he can use all the weapon types he can in BOTW, and my preferences for him match the ones I have there, lmao--enjoy the one-handed sword (especially now that I have the BLADE OF EVIL’S BANE, which is what I like calling the Master Sword, sue me), really enjoy the spear, do not like two-handed weapons. THEY’RE SLOWER AND UNWIELDY, WHAT CAN I SAY. tbh, though, I’ve ended up only using him when I absolutely have to. I fight as Link in every main Zelda game, after all, so for this I’d rather play as characters I’ve never gotten to before. also he has my least favorite Remote Bombs. YES this is something I care about, explosives are important to me!!!

Impa: YES YES GOOD. she was my favorite in the demo, but now that I have more characters, she’s slipped a little in my rankings. still a top fave, though! she’s speedy, has really fun attacks, pretty good Remote Bombs, and I love having the copies of her on the battlefield. I always have fun fighting as Impa, she kicks a LOT of ass.

Zelda: fairly fun, but not a top fave, though she DOES have my favorite Remote Bombs and it’s honestly just great to be able to play as a Zelda. I’m looking forward to her gaining her powers, though, because that looks AWESOME, judging by the trailer. so, final opinion/ranking of her is pending, really.

Mipha: THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST!!! <3 <3 <3 she was always destined to be my #1 fave playable, lbr here. I just. I REALLY LOVE MIPHA, OKAY? as both a character and as a fighter. like, WOW, her fighting style is PERFECTLY tailored to my preferences??? when it comes to directly controlling characters in action-y battles--such as in Tales games or Trials of Mana--I’ve always gravitated towards characters that are extremely agile. Mipha is the fastest character on the roster, she uses a spear, which is one of my favorite weapons ever, and she has water attacks, and water is one of my favorite magic elements to use. so, she’s perfect for me. I use her the most, obviously. <3 <3 <3 great Remote Bombs, too!

Vah Ruta: um. I mean. EPIC. I love being the one in control of this thing, it is SUPER fun to just stomp through the battlefield firing ice and lasers and blocking shots with ice blocks, y’know, the ones I had to dodge when Sidon helped me get onto it in BOTW. blowing up several Lynels with lasers is super satisfying, ngl.

Daruk: y’know what kind of characters I DON’T like using in the games I mentioned in Mipha’s paragraph? the ones that hit hard but move very slowly. Daruk is one of these characters. so, he is definitely my least fave to control because this is just not my style at all. pretty good Remote Bombs, though it takes getting used to, and making magma bombs explode is cool, just. TOO SLOW.

Vah Rudania: ALSO SUPER FUN. I love stomping with it, and firing off all the explody things. OH, and I forgot to mention, I love the music for riding these things! You get to hear bits from the approaches to them in BOTW, plus some of the music from the interior. Which means the epic emotional music from the attack on Vah Ruta, and also the excellent interior music from Vah Rudania, which I personally enjoy the most out of all the interior themes, cause it was just FUN.

Revali: SURPRISINGLY ONE OF MY FAVORITES! I’m not the biggest Revali fan around, though he’s starting to grow on me a little, and it definitely helps that the dude is a fucking BEAST in battle. he’s not as fast as Mipha, but he’s still pretty fast, and I love his aerial attacks. his animation for Stasis is hilarious, as is the “My feathers!” when you get hit with a fire attack. great Remote Bombs, too. overall, just really fun to control.

Vah Medoh: IS AWESOME. I love flying, and shooting lasers, and switching perspectives was neat, too. might’ve been my fave Divine Beast stage so far, actually.

Urbosa: also a fave!!! I knew I was gonna love controlling her, so this is no surprise. good speed, fun attacks, and LIGHTNING <3 <3 <3 Urbosa’s Fury in BOTW remains one of the most satisfying attacks I’ve ever done in a game, and lightning is my other fave magic element. so of course she is super fun to control, and I really like her Remote Bombs too.

Hestu: absolutely hilarious, the funniest possible character they could’ve made playable. on the low end of the speed spectrum, but faster than Daruk, and honestly the comedy of hearing “shimmy shimmy!” as a battle cry + summoning Koroks to help you fight, complete with “ya ha ha”s as you whack monsters with maracas is funny and adorable enough to make up for it. everything about this is amusing and delightful.

can’t wait to pilot Vah Naboris!

Every fandom I’ve been active in was for a TV show. Pokémon (I played the games but I wrote “stories” about the anime), Jimmy Neutron, Hey Arnold!, Teen Titans, Metalocalypse, How I Met Your Mother, South Park (BOTH OF WHICH I REGRET. FUCK THOSE SHOWS.) I dip a toe into other things cause I’m curious, but I’m unlikely to write fanfic for anything else. I did come VERY close to writing Adventure Zone fic recently but the impulse faded.

I don’t know man I just love Skwisgaar a lot! And I think he got shafted in the 3rd and 4th seasons and there was a lot of wasted potential for his character, and also Mean is not his only personality trait. He’s goofy! He’s awkward! He’s funny! He likes being included in things! There are a lot of fun directions the show could have gone in for him besides “horny” and “a dick” and “also there” and it was a WASTE.

I hope you dont mind my asking, but wouldn't GF have decided to remove the national dex long before LGPE released? I can see those games selling well confirming to GF that "pokemon sell well regardless of cut features" but it feels strange to blame it on LGPE when the development time on the games would suggest they made this choice awhile ago. (Not to defend lgpe lack of content) Sorry if this is a bother, I just feel like I'm missing something and would really like to understand your reasoning

For almost any other game I would agree, however for Pokémon in particular:

The National Dex (insofar as the ability to transfer old pokémon over) was never going to be a Day One feature. It’s never a Day One feature in the first games of the generation. Even if they wanted to make it one, in this case they couldn’t because Home isn’t releasing until 2020. As I’ve said in other posts, if they wanted to patch in the NatDex, they’d have the time to do it. Technically speaking, they’d have the time to do it, especially since the fanbase would be willing to wait (even if there’d be a few whiners here or there) the extra time.

Since it’s not a Day One feature, it’s something that can be worked on later in the development cycle (/can even continue to be worked on after the development cycle, or at least it could be if this series were treated with the respect of, say, The Legend of Zelda series). Again, I’m not talking about DLC that’s already on the game card that needs to be activated later, I’m talking about DLC that’s patched in, content created after that you download either to the harddrive or (though I don’t know if Switch DLC works this way specifically) onto the game card itself. Given the type of content they generally want to show early in the release cycle (the general theme / concept of the games, scenes of the various areas in the region, new ‘mon), and the fact that this would be a feature added post-release anyway, we can make a safe bet that the NatDex is something they’d work on much later in the development cycle, possibly even in the last year since, again . . . they’d have that time if they wanted to use it (and if this series was treated with genuine respect).

The Let’s Go games were stated by Masuda to be the future of the franchise if they sold well. They featured a Pokédex that was limited to only the Kanto ‘Dex, plus Meltan and Melmetal. They released in November 2018, and indeed, they sold well. In early 2019 (February, IIRC) Sword & Shield were released. While of course I don’t work at Game Freak and thus can’t say for sure, I would place money on the idea that if they were even a bit on the fence about adding the National Dex, the fact that Let’s Go sold so well despite being limited to 153 ‘mon pushed them right over the edge to, “Cut the National Dex from Sword & Shield, there’s no point in working on it.” I mean, why should they expend the effort if people will buy the games anyway? Especially when President Ishihara went on record saying that long-time fans only cared about “new pokémon and features” around the time of Let’s Go’s release. Sure, they might have already been thinking about cutting the National Dex beforehand, but Let’s Go no doubt assured them that it was a safe and correct call to make.

So that’s what I mean when I say that Let’s Go’s positive sales figures sealed all of our fates. To be entirely honest, before the National Dex announcement, I was certain that we wouldn’t see the shockwaves from Let’s Go until Gen IX. But Sword & Shield having a limited ‘Dex just like Let’s Go, and having special feature ‘mon behind $60 paywalls like Let’s Go, and having core features stripped out like Let’s Go, and the fact that it’s starting to look frighteningly like the starters won’t be able to evolve like in Let’s Go . . . the effect is pretty apparent. Sure, some of this stuff was present even before Let’s Go (namely the whole “let’s ditch useful features in the name of simplifying things” tack that Masuda has been married to for years now), but in the wake of Let’s Go, it’s success, and what Masuda said would happen if it was successful, it’s really hard not to see the link.

(Note just in case anyone read too quickly: I’m not saying the starters WON’T evolve. I’m only saying that I’m starting to fear that’s the case since we’re less than a month away from release and we haven’t even seen second stage evolutions yet. Maybe they’re just trying to keep starter evolutions a surprise, that’s entirely possible, but it’s also highly suspect, and Game Freak destroyed any trust or good faith I had in them a while back.) 

As a final note, the reason why I say that the Pokémon games aren’t treated with respect is . . . well, there are a few reasons:

Game Freak stated themselves that they put their B Team on Sword & Shield while their A Team worked on Little Town Hero. They also said they wanted to create something, “as exciting, or perhaps even more exciting” than Pokémon. They’re tired of working on Pokémon, and it shows. Which, I mean, I get it, it’s been 20+ years, but in that case tell Nintendo so that they can shift the main games over to another studio. I get that Game Freak was created for the sole purpose of making Pokémon, and maybe Taijiri-san is pissed at how you’re disrespecting his baby (I would be), but for the good of the series, if you don’t want to work on it, give it to someone who does. Don’t just shift it onto your bare bones secondary dev team.

These games are in a hellish development cycle where a new one is popped out every year. Contrast this to The Legend of Zelda where, while we’ve had some anomalies where assets were able to be largely reused and so games came out only a couple years apart (see: Ocarina of Time to Majora’s Mask) --- even that had two or three years before releases, not one the very next year. Most mainline Zelda games spend five or six years in development. I’m fully aware that we will likely be waiting until something like 2022 for Breath of the Wild 2, and I am prepared to wait that time because I know the game we get will be incredible. Granted, I’m going to be dying every single time they announce a release date to push it back, but it’ll be a death I’m grateful for because I will know that the end product will be worth it. The Pokémon games used to have a similar luxury. While there were a grand total of five games released during that time (with “five games” being used loosely, given that one was a slight upgrade and the other four were really two games with slight differences between versions), Gen IV lasted for a grand total of four years. We had Diamond & Pearl in 2006, Platinum in 2008, HeartGold & SoulSilver in 2009, and then finally, Black & White in 2010. By contrast, Gen VII didn’t even last three years, technically. I mean, this November would be its third anniversary, but that’s when Gen VIII officially starts instead. To be fair, it could be argued that Gen IV didn’t have a full four years since it came out in September 2006, and Gen V came out in September 2010. But even if you make that argument, it still had a full year on Gen VII, and to be honest, that showed. The Sinnoh games are far and away not my faves, but they were still full of content. HeartGold & SoulSilver are often considered to be the best remakes in the entire franchise, and considering the content that was cut from OmegaRuby & AlphaSapphire and Masuda’s reasoning for why that content was cut, I can’t exactly argue with that even though I did genuinely enjoy ORAS. And the games that Gen IV ushered in? Controversial opinion, but I think that the Pokémon games peaked with Gen V. Black & White not only initially had a ‘dex that was nothing but new pokémon (and yet STILL included the Nat Dex later, because in Masuda’s own words he felt it cruel to keep people from playing with their faves forever!), but it also introduced a METRIC TON of new mechanics, some of which we no longer get to use (Rotation Battles? Game Freak doesn’t know her). Who knows what exactly Game Freak did with that extra year, but it was clearly a lot of work given how wonderful the games were in Gen IV and Gen V. The extra dev time showed.By contrast, Gen VII got 2.5 years (or 3 if you’re being generous). Every single game released during this gen had massive content cuts, even when comparing to Gen VI, which also had massive content cuts. Mechanics were stripped away, and Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon technically didn’t have a NatDex either, but at least you could still have all of your ‘mon in them at a later date if you wanted to. Now with Sword & Shield, we don’t even have that, despite the Switch being far more powerful than the 3DS. (We also don’t have Mega Evolution for whatever godforsaken reason, even though the Kanto Mega Evolutions at the very least were already used in Let’s Go, the fuck, Game Freak). Pokémon games print money and always have, and Game Freak has taken this and their lack of interest in the series to the depressing but I suppose logical extreme of “do whatever and they’ll buy it anyway.” There’s no love here, there’s no respect here. They just don’t care anymore, and as someone who does care an awful lot, it’s super upsetting to me.

And while people have tried to argue that the games can’t be delayed because of the anime or the card game or whatever else:

The games come first. They’ve always come first. I know some people mistakenly think that the anime came first and that the games were created later, but that is 100% false. Pokémon started as a game series and the anime was created to advertise the games, straight up.

Filler episodes exist, and the PokéAni is no stranger to them. The Orange Islands arc was an entire arc of filler created to pad time between Gens I and II. The Delacora Islands (or whatever they were called) was a filler arc meant to pad time between Gens V and VI. Arguably the majority of the Sun & Moon anime was filler, given its slice-of-life genre, meaning the anime was even less of an excuse not to delay Sword & Shield. You can’t tell me people wouldn’t have been happy with another year of the Alola crew running around getting into random adventures. People would have eaten that up and loved it. We could have had it all.

I’m not even going to dignify “but the card game” with a response lmao. This isn’t Yu-Gi-Oh!. Sure, the card game makes money, and probably a decent amount of it (merch sales probably make up the franchise’s greatest source of income, and as someone who easily spent several hundred dollars in two weeks at the PokéCenters in Japan---including over $100 in one trip to a PokéCenter while I was there, and we went multiple times---I am a big part of that), but they come up with bullshit new expansions all the time and could easily keep doing it. Again, not a reason to delay the games if the games need more time in development.

So all in all, at the end of the day, Game Freak is no longer treating these games with love and respect, which makes them an awful lot like the villains in the games they create. The Let’s Go games were harbingers of disaster for the games, and we were told this very plainly, and just about no one listened. In fact, I legitimately lost friendships with people who got mad at me for making Facebook statuses about how they should buy Let’s Go used if they absolutely had to have them because how DARE I believe Ishihara when he said that Let’s Go were considered core titles, and how DARE I believe Masuda when he said that Let’s Go would usher in the last twenty years of the franchise. Clearly, I was just being an ugly bitch. (I wish I was exaggerating, but this actually happened, I got blocked over it, it was ridiculous.) And now here we are as a result, with no hope of things getting better unless Nintendo forcibly rips Pokémon out of Game Freak’s hands, which I don’t even think they can legally do given that they only own 1/3rd of the IP. (The other 2/3rds belong to Game Freak and Creatures Inc., as I understand it.) 

TL;DR:

Pokémon is still my favorite fictional fantasy world, but as someone who has always loved the games first and foremost, the current state of it depresses me to no end.

Playing Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Wow, hey guys, it’s been a while, hasn’t it? I’m trying to migrate back here, and even though I opened requests and got a veritable flood of them, none of them were really clicking. Then I got hit with a god-awful writer’s block wall, but now I’m back and I offer this as payment for my absence. It’s not the longest, but it’s more than I thought I’d be able to do, so. I hope you guys enjoy it!!

These are gonna be all over the place so bear with me for a little bit

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. A classic, or so they’ve heard. Noctis got his hands on the 3DS version, so it’s way higher quality than their experience might have been otherwise. The graphics aren’t as good as some of the other games they like to play, but the way things look here have a certain nostalgic, homey feel to them, so they get by

Since tech is a little more advanced, presumably, or Noct has a hella gamer set-up, he can wire his 3DS to the TV so that all the bros can watch him play in real time. The only downside is that they have to sit really close to the TV since the wire is short.

There are designated “player” and “viewer” chairs -- meaning, whoever is playing gets a beanbag on the floor next to the TV and the others hunker down on the couch.

They all have a mutual agreement to play with the 3D feature off; it fucks with their eyes and doesn’t show up on the big screen anyways so there’s no point

Ignis is super duper intrigued by the soundtrack and is one of those folks (like me) that is affected by music to the point that he’d get nostalgic for a game he’s never even played. He really loves the OoT soundtrack (an understatement)

Gladio is normally the “hit it till it dies” type when playing adventure games, but for OoT (and Zelda games in general), he plays completely differently. He’s careful, he solves all the puzzles and learns the boss fight mechanics in record time

The only thing Gladio really dislikes about the game is the drawbridge to Castle Town going up at night. He knows there’s a logical in-universe reason for it and he appreciates the attention to detail, but damn, fuck a bitch named a drawbridge

Prompto is in LOVE with the graphics. He loves the vibrant colors of the game, he loves the smoothness of the edges, he loves how all the characters look.

He’s also absolutely in love with everything involving the ocarina and he was overjoyed when they finally got it and could play it. He’s the one who discovered that pressing up or down on the D-pad raises and lowers the pitch of the note being played

Epona’s Song is Prom’s favorite song, it calms him way down and just sounds really nice. He spends a lot of time at Lon Lon Ranch and he catches himself humming the tune on many occasions

Noctis just loves the game all around. It definitely lives up to his expectations. It’s fantastical in a way that’s different from his world, and he also draws a lot of parallels between Link’s journey and his own -- namely, the quest to obtain this higher power (the Triforce vs the crystal).

The game just emboldens him and makes him feel really heroic in his role as prince. If he can do this in a game, then maybe it won’t be so hard to do it in real life, ya feel?

Noct also loves the soundtrack, just not as much as Ignis does

Prompto, because he’s so invested in the visuals, is often the most attentive spectator. Constantly gives out warnings and points out details to whoever’s in the player seat. “Noct go over there! Gladio look, the switch is in the corner there!!”

Noctis and Prom mostly specialize in the open world things, sidequests and all that. Gladio is a dungeon master and is usually the one handling those. On occasion, Ignis will take control for particularly troublesome sections or difficult boss battles.

Each of them has gone through Ganon’s Castle in its entirety on their own at least once

Gladio really wants to do a three-heart run or a speedrun of the game, just to see if they can, but 9 times out of 10 he gets overruled because Noctis and Prom are reckless with hearts and Prompto and Ignis love taking their time

Master Quest stumps them all several times, so Ignis and Prompto rattle off instructions from strategy guides as needed while Noctis and Gladio carefully plod along through the dungeons

Speaking of the dungeons tho

Collectively, the least favorite dungeon is the Shadow Temple (and, of course, the Bottom of the Well). Otherwise, they have mostly differing opinions about the temples

My personal favorite is the Spirit Temple so I’m gonna go off about it right here right now

I know what I just said, but man, they all LOVE the Spirit Temple. The music. The atmosphere. The story. The build-up. The bosses. Everything. Ignis especially adores the symmetry of it all. The first time they get to it, they’re all literally speechless. It will live on as one of the defining moments of the playthroughs

Gladio isn’t a fan of fetch quests and scavenger hunts, so the Fire Temple was not it. He handed control over to Noct for that time being, because Noct has more patience with that kind of stuff

However, despite that, Gladio loves the Gorons. It’s an obviously drawn bias, but like. Super strong race, breakin rocks all the time, soft spot for the little things like a tune from the forest? Gladio is into that

Ignis hates and loves the Water Temple. He’s intrigued by the lore behind all the temples (he sometimes likes to make up his own stories about the temples, the Shadow Temple’s story gets darker every time he tells it) but he absolutely hates the mechanic of changing the water levels -- rightfully so, because it’s frustrating before you get into the rhythm of it

Fave mini boss? Dark Link all the way. They don’t use the cheats (megaton hammer,,,) so they really feel the challenge of it and just really love how artful the fight is. Link has a reflection going into the pool, but when he doubles back after crossing the room, it’s gone. Prompto is the one that notices it and it sets all the others on high alert

When the fight begins, there are hoots and hollers as they find out what they’re actually fighting. The thrust attack is up first and when Dark hops up on top of Link’s sword? Shit gets real

It’s a duel for the ages and they love it so much

Prompto quite likes the Forest Temple because of how colorful it is. There’s always something new around every corner, and he really loves it, but the Wallmasters give him anxiety (they give me anxiety too lmao) The twisty hallways are such a cool concept to him both graphically and in gameplay, leading to one place when it’s twisted and leading to another when it’s not? He loves it, even if it gets confusing at times

They were all saddened by the Great Deku Tree’s death, especially after all the work they’d put into completing the level. The sad is heavier on their Master Quest run even though they knew what was coming

Ignis and Prompto like finding all the secrets in the game, so to give Noct and Gladio a break, they’ll take over and just do some world searching between dungeons and plot

Needless to say, the bros manage to 100% the game

Ignis was the only one who saw the Zelda/Sheik twist coming. Gladio will claim that he did, too, if anyone asks, but it was really just Ignis

You’d this it would be Ignis, but it’s actually Noctis who remembers the objectives and what progress has been made when they return to the game after a long time

All of them HATE Jabu-Jabu’s Belly. Like. It’s disgusting. Do I have to keep talking about it

All around, the game is such a fun time for them. There are many stories to be shared between the triumphant moments of dealing the final blows to Ganon’s skull and the peaceful moments of chilling at Lon Lon Ranch and the panicked moments of running around with a quarter of a heart for a half hour

(Ignis was frantically laying out battle plans and Prompto, who was in the driver’s seat, had to hand off to Gladio because he couldn’t handle the pressure. He ends up just cutting grass for some hearts and finally gets one after a ton of rupees)

It’s a family bonding time, and they wouldn’t trade it for the world.

I think for me, at least, I'm tired of the Big Dark-Skinned Ambitious Man being portrayed as the villain against two fair-skinned, blonde-haired protags. It starts to become glaring. And honestly, if I wanted yet another game of "Ganondorf tries to take over the world" I would just play Twilight Princess or Wind Waker or Ocarina of Time again. That story has been done to death and the formula is stale.

Great. You are completely allowed to want a change from the standard tradition of Zelda. That’s fine. A change of pace and story keeps the series alive and fresh. I am all for new ideas.

But I think for me, at least, I’m tired of the new and very worn out (for me) trope that is the Redemption Arc. When a villain turns from evil to good for whatever reason and aids the hero to accomplish their goals. 

Sometimes it’s perfect, like with Zuko in Avatar. But it seems like we almost expect every villain nowadays to turn away from villainy and become a good character. 

Growing up, I always tended to like the villains way more than the heroes. Every hero always had the same motivation; stop the villain, but every villain had a unique and interesting reason for why they were doing what they were doing.

When I was a kid and my friends introduced me to Zelda for the first time (Ocarina of Time) I IMMEDIATELY took to Ganondorf. I thoroughly enjoyed his attitude and actions. He was so sure of himself and so strong. How could I not love him?

Going through the other games with him, I just enjoyed him more and more. In Wind Waker we see his full motivations during both OOT and WW, seeing how it was his wish to give his people a land they can thrive in.

In TP (my fave Zelda game) we see him truly alone, with the Gerudo gone. He has evolved through his hatred of Hyrule into a nigh godlike (at least in Zant’s eyes) monster. All he cares about is taking the land away from Zelda and the Hylians, virtually ruling the world alone.

He cares NOTHING for people outside his own kind. He goes so far as to take pleasure in their pain and suffering. He uses them how he wants, manipulating their desires with promises and whispers, then when they are of no more use to him, casts them aside like they were nothing to begin with. 

That is evident many times with Zant and the Twili, Vaati in FSA, and Cia in HW (I know it’s not canon but they got Ganondorf’s character down perfectly.)

Ganondorf has never been a hero in the conventional sense, but I still think he sees himself as one, for his own reasons. 

The only time I have ever seen a well done Hero Ganondorf was in @figmentforms series. He is a perfect blend of… Can’t believe I am using this term…. Noble Savage. He is wise and willing to learn from his mistakes, but will not hesitate to completely destroy anyone who disagrees with him.

Sure that can be a fun switch-up blah blah blah, but every good story needs a good villain. Every time I see that red hair and those amber eyes on my screen I feel good.

So, you can absolutely have a Hero Ganondorf. It’s just game series and we are all allowed to want what we want.

For me, I will always want my King of Evil.
