author’s note (11/12/2022) – i wrote this for one of my closest and most beloved besties because they’ve been going through it lately and struggling with life, and i figured i’d post it on here too just in case it’s able to provide anyone else with comfort! hopefully it’s vague enough in most aspects to do so! also this is my first time even attempting to write thoma so i really hope i did our beloved perfect malewife justice!

The sunset makes the sky appear as though it’s on fire, and you admire the view as you watch the cuihua and aralia leaves flutter through the breeze from the window seat in the room the Kamisato siblings so graciously assigned to you.

Pressing your forehead against the chilled glass, you close your eyes and sigh, your body and mind feeling heavy with fatigue.

You hear the door open and close but don’t bother to turn and look; you know who it is, you’d recognize those footsteps anywhere.

Warm hands come to rest on your shoulders, lightly massaging them as you feel him press a soft kiss to the top of your head in greeting.

“Hi, Thoma,” you murmur, leaning back into him and feeling his warm chest press to your back.

“Hey there, sweetheart,” he chuckles, bending over you just enough for you to glimpse his gorgeous green eyes, always full of love for you.

“Done already?” You inquire, surprised that he’s managed to get through all of his usual evening chores and duties so quickly – it wasn’t even dark out yet, and he usually wasn’t finished until after night had fallen.

Thoma hums, nuzzling his face into your hair and breathing you in. “Mhm, I made sure to work extra hard today and hurry so I could be with you.”

Turning to face him instead of the window, you raise an eyebrow at him. “Be with me?”

“Of course, why wouldn’t I want to spend time with you?” He questions, meeting your raised brow with one of his own.

“I don’t know, I’ve been kind of a bummer lately,” you shrug, looking down to avoid his gaze.

His ungloved hand grasps your chin, gently tilting your head back up to meet his eyes.

“I disagree, you’ve just been feeling down, but you should know by now that I always want to spend time with you, bummer or not,” he says, pressing his forehead to yours, a small smile on his lips.

You can’t help but to return his smile, reaching up to wrap your arms around him.

“How do you always know what to say, hm?”

“Oh, you know, just having known you for a while… and maybe the fact that I’m ridiculously in love with you, that may help too,” he winks at you, laughing when you scrunch up your nose at him.

His laugh never fails to make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, and your smile grows.

“Hm, I guess that makes sense,” you murmur, eyes shimmering with emotions left unsaid.

Reaching to cradle your face in his hands, he presses a sweet, insistent kiss upon your lips.

“I’m so lucky to be in love with one of the most beautiful and wonderful people in the world, wouldn’t you say?”

Shrugging, you covered his hands with your own. “I’m in love with the most perfect man to ever exist, so who’s really winning here?”

Thoma laughs again, nuzzling his nose against yours and brushing his thumbs across your cheekbones, not commenting on your misty eyes.

“I’m hardly perfect… but I’m glad you think so, sweetheart,” he chuckles, shaking his head.

Inhaling deeply, you slowly stand up, bringing your now clasped hands down between you.

“So did you have plans, or did you just miss me so desperately you needed to hurry?” You tease, tilting your head and trying to hide the small shake in your voice.

Gently walking backwards, guiding you to sit on the plush bed, he brushes your hair out of your face and presses a kiss to your forehead.

“I was thinking, if you wanted to, we could cuddle up with some hot tea and read together?”

You nod, suddenly overwhelmed with emotion.

He smiles softly at you, squeezing your hands before stepping away. “I’ll be right back then, dear.”

It takes every ounce of willpower you have to not start crying as soon as he’s out of sight.

It always gets like this around your birthday, you are always overcome with an intense bout of depression and this year was unfortunately worse than usual.

You scooch back to set up the pillows so you can lean against the headboard comfortably, hugging your knees to your chest as you wait and trying not to get lost in your head.

Sooner than you expected, Thoma comes back into the room balancing a tray of tea with one hand and holding a tin of something in the other.

Nodding at the tin, you raise your brows in question.

Smiling sheepishly, he places the tea tray on the side table and shrugs.

“I just figured you might like something sweet, it’s okay if you don’t though!”

Your bottom lip shakes as you are once again hit with how perfect Thoma is, and how you don’t deserve him.

Suddenly there is a weight right beside you, hands holding yours and lifting them up to press soft kisses to your fingers.

“Hey, hey… what’s wrong? Is it the cookies? I’m sorry, I can get you something else, maybe Miss Kamisato–”

“I’m a failure and I don’t deserve you,” you blurt out, choking down a sob as the tears that have been building up all day finally escape and run down your face.

Thoma just stares at you for a brief moment, seemingly processing what you’ve said before he starts shaking his head, frowning.

“What are you talking about, sweetheart? You’re not a failure at all, and of course you deserve me!” He insists, staring into your teary eyes earnestly.

“I just feel like I should be better by now, you know? I’m happy that the Kamisato’s are willing to house me, and it allows us to be together more, but I…” you breathe shakily, staring at your hands that he’s still holding, gripping onto you near desperately at this point.

“I just feel like a burden, a failure. I should be doing something more with my life than just helping keep accounts straight for the trade routes,” you finish, glancing up at him to find him observing you closely.

Thoma takes a deep breath, exhaling slowly.

“Okay, do you want me to help and reassure you, or do you just need to vent it out?” He asks softly, squeezing your hands in assurance.

You shrug, unable to get more words out through the silent crying.

He nods resolutely, glancing down at your hands and biting his lip before looking back up and meeting your eyes with determination.

“First of all… you’re amazing, and so smart, and you make me feel so proud of you every day for the tiniest things you do,” he murmurs, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.

“Secondly, you’re not a burden at all, my lord and lady Kamisato adore you almost as much as I do and love having you here, you’re practically family!”

You’ve fully given up on trying to stop crying, tears running down your hot cheeks as you take shaky breaths to try to calm yourself down, now overwhelmed with both despair and happiness.

“I love you, so much that I feel like I’m going to explode sometimes, and so if you’re unhappy we can look into you doing something different!” He insists, caressing your face with his hands and brushing your tears away as his open, honest eyes captivate you.

“I know it’s a lot, and your feelings are very valid, but we can do our best to figure things out together, if that’s something you’d want?”

Nodding, you can’t help but to let out a watery laugh that causes a gorgeous smile to light up Thoma’s face.

Pulling you close to him, he presses light kisses all over your face, chuckling when you groan.

“Ew, Thoma, I’ve been crying!” You exclaim, gently pushing his face away with one hand, trying to cover up your teary and mildly snotty face with the other in embarrassment.

Shaking his head at you with a fond smile, he reaches over to the nightstand and grabs the box of tissues to hand to you.

Immediately grabbing a bunch and cleaning your face as best you can, you finally look back up at him with a flustered smile.

Moving to press up against you as he leans down and goes back to fluttering kisses across your face with a smitten grin, you can’t help but soak in the tiny declarations of love that he’s pressing to your skin.

Eventually he pulls away after pressing a final kiss to the tip of your nose and tucking some loose strands of hair behind your ears.

Sighing, you lean your head on his chest, listening to his heart beat firmly against your ear.

He wraps his arms around you, pulling you to practically be on top of him as he rubs your back with one hand and runs his fingers through your hair with the other, beginning to hum a quiet tune.

“The tea’s gonna get cold,” you whisper, nuzzling your head between his neck and shoulder.

Chuckling softly, he doesn’t move. “It’s not a problem, we can stay like this for however long you need, okay?” He murmurs, and you love how you can feel his voice in his chest when he’s got you pressed to him like this.

“Okay,” you reply, eyes drifting closed as you’re lulled to sleep by Thoma’s presence and the release of emotions you just experienced. “I love you.”

You feel him smile from where his face is pressed to the top of your head.

essentially when building their family tree they go less by genetics and more by emotional connection, which is why leo is referred to as their brother and daniel isn't (which he's fine with) they used to view donald as their dad and douglas as their uncle, but the line blurred after aijaf so douglas has a weird mix of the roles now (he felt more paternal than uncle affection for them, naomi and leo included, way before but didn't want to step on the kids' toes)

Sadie makes me so sad esp in the epilogue she literally makes the comment i wanna die like she is such an incredible character but she is so defeated by losing her husband, and then finding the gang only to lose them as well. After Micah's death she didn't even have revenge to live for. Also being at John and Abigail's wedding? As beautiful as the day was and as happy as she was for them, being reminded of her own wedding, everything she lost, how much she loved her husband. I think that the passive suicidality/recklessness she was putting into bounty hunting would've caught up with her really quickly and she was shot and killed by some unknown outlaw she was trying to bring in no later than 1908.

Jake bless was very much not someone anyone thought to look for fortunately with living with Sadie in such an isolated area he's a proper survivalist and just lived camping on public land doing odd jobs like farm work where he could to earn some cash for basic necessities and was just rolling with it. He's very laid back go with the flow type guy who was not nearly as panicked about waking up in modern era as he should have been.

It's completely stupid how they ran into Jake Adler. The gang were in public talking too loud about 1899 and he casually walked up to them like oh hi were you guys also magically teleported 100 years into the future after dying??

The gang are still in awe of how well they balance each other out. There was divine intervention in them being so perfectly made for each other let alone finding each other in canon era it's so much clearer how they seemed so lost and distraught being apart. Why Sadie was still mourning and talking about Jake in 1907 when she had lost him for longer than she'd known him at that point. Two people could not be more perfect for each other.

Sadie starts playing harmonica again now that she has her Jakey back. And Jake, who in a similar way stopped playing when he didn't have his Sadie his amore, gets another violin (this is a hc that I will die defending let him play fiddle while Sadie's on harmonica little homesteading country music losers). So not a Red Wedding…but a Red Honeymoon. Warrior is very good at creating fight scenes that matter. They have stakes, they drive the story and the characters forward. Li Yong killing his best friend to protect Mai Ling was so emotional! He even yelled at Mai Ling to get out! That’s how you know he finally broke. How much more is he willing to sacrifice for her and love? Chao was right, love has consequences. 

Mai Ling is a complicated bad bitch. She’s ruthless and power-hungry. But her feelings for Li Yong and Ah Sahm are real, deep down. At this rate, she’s gonna push away everyone who could be an ally. Can’t wait to see how this will affect her and Li Yong.

The second biggest fight was Bill vs Chief Atwood. I must say, Bill’s been growing on me this season. He was the only one who gave a shit when Atwood was terrorizing the Chinese. The other cops are just mad that he’s punishing their people, too. Still, 5 years in prison for stealing some food is ludicrous. Atwood is an evil menace for everyone, white or Chinese.  I’ve been waiting all season for Bill to beat the shit out of him! Too bad it’s gonna bite him in the ass later.

so, love poetry was honestly just scenes of jason reciting poetry to dick and then four scenes later i realized i had a plot idea and the rest is history lol

the basic premise is that dick *thinks* he's hallucinating jason (specifically and often as robin) and is just not mentally well about anything. except! it is actually the ghost of jason! and ghost jason is looking out for dick, or trying to anyways.

“You can feel guilty over that, sure, be an idiot,” Jason huffs and [Dick] can feel the familiar exasperation rolling off of him. “Or, you can do something about it.”  His words make him pause--they always do, make him pause, make him choke the rage and grief out--but he tilts his head and just breathes. He thinks. He’s clever, his little wing is always so clever.  Or maybe, he just knows him too well. “Thanks, Jay,” He murmurs, and lets his fingers curl around him.    “A man takes his sadness and / throws it away / but then he’s still left with his hands.” Jason finishes, a wispy whisper against his skin, hands pushing him towards the ledge.  When he leaps, cold determination and the ever present rage in his gut, Jason laughs.  It carries him forward. so for a while, ghost jason is reciting poetry/literature to dick and trying to keep him alive but then, jason's body wakes up, crawls out of his grave and is found by talia. ghost jason realizes shit is about to go down and not in a good way and gives a very vague, somewhat cryptic warning to dick before disappearing (aka talia dips jason in the pit and restores his ghost/soul).

and then a few years later, red hood shows up in gotham.

then jason's besties with essence and ducra at the all-caste and also befriends rose wilson during his league days. then after the whole red hood debacle, he's close with faye gunn, and when he starts to dabble in team ideas (the budding outlaws!) he meets and befriends duela dent, artemis, and later isabel ardila; has a weird reunion with barbara, which then leads to him meeting stephanie (who decides jason is her new best friend). he also causes some chaos with selina and her team while in gotham.

i've also been thinking of adding a super, just not sure if i want it to be kara or not; also bette kane is a big contender (just not sure how to introduce her yet); and then i've been thinking about adding blackfire (komand'r) because she's so fascinating to me and i think she might match the whole outlaws thing a bit better than kori.

there will be cameos from kate kane, huntress, barbara + cass, onyx, donna troy, and harley, but i really want to focus on jason, cheshire, rose, duela, artemis, and steph (and hopefully bette, komand'r, and mara).

top 5 toshirō mifune movies? 👀

Ah, good question (←vibrating at glass shattering frequencies)

1. Throne of Blood (1957). Anyone surprised? I don't know what to say about this movie to be honest, I love everything about it. It's super good. Go watch it NOW. Trust me.

2. Rashōmon (1950) and Seven Samurai (1964) share the position because I can't decide which one I like better. In these Mifune is a handsome wild thing, his physicality is amazing breathtaking mesmerizing 10/10. That one scene in Rashōmon (posting it under cut in case you want to watch it) literally made me gasp and I rewinded the movie to watch it again and again before I could move on. Truly a beast of prey.

3. Stray Dog (1949). Although not my first Kurosawa Akira movie, it was my first movie with Mifune (that I watched with my friend Maša!!). I had no idea he was wild! During the watch my friend commented “he's wild! babe, i love you” which in hindsight is funny to know that's approximately the same thought passing by Kurosawa's head when he first saw him. Anyway, great movie! Always one to love a story about a detective losing his gun and missing part of his identity along with it.

4. Red Beard (1965). My bestie Yakusho Kōji named this one in his top four Japanese movies of all times (:

5. Tokyo Sweetheart (1952). For the last position I decided not to name The Bad Sleep Well, High and Low, Yojimbo and Sanjuro or The Idiot (wink wink) that by the way are an absolute must watch, to leave instead the spot to this less known movie which is a tragedy, but a comedy about it. Like, it's not the greatest movie, but it's pleasant. Malewife Mifune (:

Honestly I'm p much happy with all ships because I just want to see people going feral over these characters and Warrior like I currently am!

Canon:

-Mai Ling x Li Yong (ultimate malewife x girlboss pairing)

-Ah Toy x Nellie (anything to make Ah Toy happy bb)

-Hong x Marcel-the singer (they so genuinely happy rn it's making my heart sing)

-Ah Sahm x Yan Mi (I love a woman who can inspire Ah Sahm to use his chaos energy for good)

Non-Canon:

-Ah Sahm x Young Jun (I mean it's right there, they're so obsessed with each other, I love them, every scene that's just them has so much romantic tension istg)

-Ah Sahm x Young Jun x Hong (Hong deserves some love from them too my wonderful cringefail Hop Wei husbands)

-Ah Toy x Mai Ling (just imagine the power they would have + they understand each others' pasts)

-Ah Sahm x Ah Toy (I personally like them better as besties but I like Ah Sahm paired with anyone who could step on me)

-Ah Sahm x Li Yong (so hot + enemies to lovers + it would drive Mai Ling insane)

-Buckley x Jail (someone stop this man)

-Chao x some peace and quiet (after this past ep this man deserves a break)
