some kn8 ramblings (with a side order of manga spoilers)

i love that (as far as we know) kafka and mina's tragic backstory is "dead cat." we know nothing of their parents, homes, or friends from after the kaiju attack, only that mina's cat died. (obviously, the series isn't over yet, so this could be totally disproven at any point, but bear with me lol.)

i actually find that really refreshing. yes, it's so heartbreaking to lose a pet, but it's not the typical trope of a character's power level correlating to how traumatized they are (ex: family massacres, everyone they've ever loved ending up dead, backstabbing, torture, etc etc). their traumas are grounded in very realistic and relatable circumstances, and i think that goes to show that a character doesn't need these extreme reasons to want to do good and fight the scary monster. mina's cat died in a kaiju attack and she wants to make sure that no one else has to lose their best friend/ball of floof to a kaiju ever again. that is enough of a reason and a noble one at that.

soshiro, as another example, has a complicated relationship with his family, but they aren't dead or rogue. he's not seeking revenge on them, but rather they did not support him when it mattered and made him feel inferior - that is a traumatizing environment to grow up in, and unsupportive parents & sibling favoritism are also SO grounded in reality.

it really makes these characters feel real, and i think it's a powerful thing for a reader who maybe doesn't have the best relationship with their parents/siblings like soshiro, or who has lost a beloved pet like mina, or who doesn't have natural-born talent in a specific field like kafka, to see these characters take those experiences, work through them, find a support system, and overcome them.

(side note: i LOVE to see that soshiro actually went no contact with his brother for past behaviors! that sets such a powerful example to readers that it's okay to cut out people who have made you feel like shit!!)

of course, there are other characters like narumi and reno who have heavier backstories, but i love that their experiences don't automatically turn them into the brooding emo characters who think only of killing kaiju and seeking revenge with zero intentions to form friendships with the people around them.

it's just really nice to see. i feel like in stories that have a large cast, it's easy for a character's backstory to completely shape their personality, rather than being shaped by a multitude of experiences - good and bad - gained throughout life. (in cases like reno and kikoru, we see them grow as people & change their outlooks due to their positive experiences with kafka and the rest of the defense force. that doesn't override their past experiences, but adds layers to who they are overall.)

i see kn8 getting criticized a lot for lacking in depth or themes - and i do think there is a conversation to be had about locating the series' central theme and whether or not it's been clearly communicated (and whether or not that even matters) - but i also think part of that criticism stems from having a fantastical premise (that maybe SHOULD have a little more death, but that's another conversation entirely lol) with deeply grounded characters, a contrast we don't see too much of - especially from series in the battle shonen & shonen-adjacent genres (thinking about shows like naruto, aot, jjk, demon slayer, hell's paradise, etc).

basically, i find it refreshing that kn8 isn't over-traumatizing its characters despite the fact that the premise would allow it lol

I beat Final Fantasy XVI

This game is pretty divided among players. It's entirely action-oriented as opposed to being turn-based, it's the first mainline entry to receive a big ol' M rating (and boy does it deserve one), and FF's place in the industry in general is a pretty hot topic right now. Square Enix has stated FFXVI hasn't met sales expectations (coming from a company who sold off their biggest IPs to try getting into NFTs a year too late), and fans have been dooming pretty hard about the future of the franchise. I even saw one guy say the only FF fans today are people who were teenagers when VII came out.

But speaking as someone who wasn't even conceived when VII came out, FFXVI has been the most fun I've had with a mainline entry since XI. I went in expecting this to be decent at best and it ended up exceeding those expectations quite a bit.

My one complaint, and pretty much everyone's biggest complaint, is a lack of character variety. For pretty much all of the game you only play as one dude, but the companions all do a bunch of cool things that make me wish I could play as them too. Even in the Eikon fights, the big epic Kaiju battles shown in the game's title art & marketing, you only get to control the same Eikon in every single fight.

Even with that missed opportunity, I loved playing XVI and will most likely go back to try the DLC at some point. Stranger of Paradise is probably the best action-oriented FF, but XVI can still stand all on its own.

Heya! Here's a little fic I wrote for a dear friend of mine, @kaijus-love-zone, featuring her Sona and TFP Ratchet! I had such a fun time writing this!

Ocean Wonders

Warnings: None

Word Count: 1,046

As the two lovers passed through the swirling, green portal from the Autobot base, a smile blossomed across Kaiju’s face. Once the ambulance exited the ground bridge and rolled onto the pavement of the road, she could barely contain her excitement as she wiggled in his front seat. 

They arrived at the coordinates of the secluded beach. There, no one could find them or bother them. As Ratchet led the way to the white, sandy paradise, he noticed her cheery demeanor quite swiftly. 

“Excited, Kaiju?”

The woman nodded.

“I am! I can’t believe this is your first time seeing the ocean.”

Ratchet hummed.

“Well, none of our missions ever directed us here.” His alt-mode shifted. “Besides, I never saw the appeal.”

Kaiju thought for a moment, feeling her heart flutter inside her chest. She winked at his dashboard, giggling a little.

“I think you may change your mind on that, Ratchet.”

Several moments later, the two made it to the field of sand. Ratchet allowed Kaiju to step out onto the ground before he transformed with mechanical clicks and whirrs. Kaiju sighed happily, running her fingers through her mohawk as the setting sun glowed across the freckles on her skin. Eventually, she caught Ratchet staring at her with an almost fond look, his cyan optics bright with silent adoration.

“Come on!” Kaiju waved at him. “It’s right up ahead.”

She walked alongside him, trying to match his speed as best as she could. The ocean shoreline was only a few feet away, and she couldn’t wait to show him its unyielding beauty.

...

Frankly, Ratchet didn’t understand why Kaiju wanted to show him the ocean. It couldn’t have been more exciting than other locations on the planet, surely? Nevertheless, he knew that it was important to her, and that was enough for him to join her.

The mech felt the environment around him, acknowledging the salty, sea air on his olfactory sensors as well as the cool breeze against his plating. As he approached the ocean, his pedes sinking into the sand, he wondered if it was more pleasing than other sites on Earth he personally witnessed. Once the two reached the shoreline, he watched as Kaiju gasped and smiled out into the grand, blue expanse of water.

“We made it!”

Ratchet turned his gaze from her, focusing out into the sea. His optics widened and his digits gave a slight wiggle at his sides. He took his time, soaking in the sight before him. His audial receptors picked up the sound of crashing waves against the sand while his optics noticed the birds soaring in the distance above the water. The sun glistened across the ocean, turning it almost orange. It seemed endless, just as his love for Kaiju. He appreciated it; he admired it. Ratchet smiled.

“Oh.”

Below him, Kaiju lifted her phone and showed it to Ratchet. Before the trip, she asked him if she could take pictures of his reaction. He said that it was fine before, and it was certainly fine now. As she took photos, she kicked her leg as she watched him absorb everything into his processor.

“The sea is so calm today. It worked out perfectly for us.”

Ratchet tilted his helm, curious.

“Is it…normally not calm?”

He supposed that it made sense as Kaiju nodded, her loose hair flowing in the wind.

“Oh, no. The ocean is both dangerous and beautiful. It’s-” 

She paused, and then, she shook her head, noticing how Ratchet kept his gaze steady on the sea.

“Well, I’ll tell you later.”

Ratchet turned to face her, sharing her smile. Her knowledge made him joyful, her passion almost contagious. 

“I would like to know.” He rolled his shoulders a little. “As for now, may we lie in the sand for a moment?”

Kaiju nodded.

...

Soon after, the two found a secure spot on the beach, resting there together. The sand was warm but soft as the two sat in silence, enjoying the world around them. Occasionally, she glanced up at his large form. Kaiju was delighted to witness Ratchet’s appreciation for Earth. It may not be his home planet, but it still had much to offer.

After some time passed, Ratchet fidgeted and complained about the sand finding its way into his plating.

“How irritating.” 

Kaiju smiled, feeling sympathetic. 

“Yeah, sand does that to us, too. I can give you a detail clean soon, if you want.”

Ratchet shook his helm.

“No, no. It’s fine. I can manage for now.”

Kaiju hummed as the two continued to relax as one. Gradually, Ratchet pointed out into the sand, his curiosity lifting.

“May I ask what that green substance is on the shoreline?”

Kaiju was more than happy to explain. 

“It’s kelp! It’s getting washed-up by the waves!” She crossed her legs, gesturing with her hands. “The spots where it’s all clumped-up on the shore is where the tide reaches during high tide. At low tide, the water goes out and you can find sea creatures like crabs and clams!”

Ratchet appeared puzzled.

“And how can the water rise and lower in level?”

Kaiju smiled.

“The moon! Its gravity pulls the water around a bit.”

Ratchet thought to himself, lifting a digit to his mouthpiece. 

“Hm. Well, in that case, could we visit a low tide someday?”

Kaiju nodded, excitement bubbling in her stomach.

“Sure! We can go right now.”

And that was when Ratchet stopped her with his voice. Kaiju turned towards him, witnessing a slow grin draw itself across his faceplate.

“It’s tempting. But, seeing as we’re alone together…I have other plans that I would like to offer you, Kaiju.”

The medic felt a rush of warmth in his chassis once he noticed his lover’s reddening face, matching the glow of her dark, brown eyes. He smiled, gently pulling her closer into his servos. He cupped her tiny body, protecting her and cradling her near him. Tenderly, he drew his digits down her back in a soft but sensual manner. Ratchet heard her breath hitch and he smiled, lifting her higher to his helm.

There, he pressed her forehead against his and vented with a blissful sigh.

As long as he still functioned, no force on Earth or on Cybertron could ever bring her harm.

So like, the kaiju cultists of Pacific Rim interest me quite a lot, because religions and cults and all that are things that interest me. I need you to understand this first and foremost.

Because.

*deep breath*

The kaiju prayer in the novelization is. Um.

Well...

It's complete and utter nonsense. Total garble. Completely incoherent.

What do I mean? Well...

So, here's the kaiju prayer written by Alex Irvine for the Pacific Rim novelization:

We are the sisters of the kaiju.

We open our arms to receive the angels of the ocean.

Majestic creatures from beyond our horizons, deliver us from suffering and strike the evil from our hearts.

You are mercenaries on a mission of mercy, come to free humanity from a poisoned home. With almighty powers, you stir our oceans and steal our skies.

O kaiju kings, lead us down into your paradise below the seas and vanquish all who oppose your supreme reign.

Look how you crucify our false prophets, man-made tyrants who fear what they do not understand. You are not the scourge. You are the salvation.

We fall to our knees in your infinite shadow and raise our hands in awe and admiration.

Let the blue blood of the archangels wash away our iniquity that we may start life anew in the world before…

On a broad level, this aligns with Travis Beacham's statement about BuenaKai following an apocalyptic theology and believing the kaiju are here to wash our sins away.

But when you look closer, you can see that the kaiju are referred to as angels, archangels, kings, and mercenaries. Angels/archangels, mercenaries, and kings are very different things, and only one of these actually makes sense.

It should be pretty damned obvious to anyone ever that whatever the kaiju are, they are not kings. Kings wouldn't be out here attacking cities and getting nuked or beaten to death by Jaegers.

Mercenaries is also a strange word to throw into this whole mess, because a mercenary is a soldier for hire. It's both incompatible with king and angel/archangel.

Angel/archangel is the only one that makes any kind of sense. This one actually does align with information in the film, where Hannibal Chau says that the cultists believe the kaiju are "sent by the gods." (And given that Chau sells kaiju bits across the street from a kaiju church, it's reasonable to think he's probably not too off in this description.)

Something that's kinda weird is the "majestic creatures from beyond our horizons" bit. Literally everybody knows they come from the bottom of the sea, and this knowledge is definitely attributed to the BuenaKai cultists in this prayer.

And then there's this line:

Look how you crucify our false prophets, man-made tyrants who fear what they do not understand.

Dear god there's a lot to unpack here.

Like. "False prophet" is probably the the most inept insult Irvine could've come up with, and betrays a severe lack of knowledge in how any Christian or Christian-adjacent spiritual worldview actually works. Like for all of the ridiculous demonization religious extremists get up to, they don't just call anything and everything they don't like a "false prophet." This only happens in hack writing where the writer only knows a few basic Christian cliches.

Same goes for "crucify." The kaiju are not doing any crucifying. The word is only here because it's a Christian cliche. You could have just said "slay," Alex. It's also in the Bible.

"Man-made tyrants who fear what they do not understand" is also bizarre. Wouldn't the "tyrants who fear what they do not understand" be the people who built the Jaegers, not the Jaegers themselves?

Again, I have researched some of the most unhinged spiritual movements on the goddamn planet (Love Has Won, anyone?), and none of them are this incoherent.

So I've decided to rewrite this prayer into something coherent, that also reflects the existence of BuenaKai monks:

We are the brothers and sisters of the kaiju.

We open our arms to receive the angels of the ocean.

Majestic creatures from the world below, deliver us from suffering and strike the evil from our hearts.

You are warriors of mercy, sent to free us from our poisoned home. Your almighty strength stirs our oceans. Your sacred majesty occludes our skies.

O mighty archangels, show us the righteous way that shall lead us to life everlasting in the world to come. Vanquish all who oppose your holy wrath.

Look how you strike down our proud works, look how you have slain the Jaegers and crushed the Wall. You are scourge to the tyrant and salvation to the faithful.

We fall to our knees and raise our hands to thank the Holy Ones who have sent you.
