Just One More Chapter

It started as a small habit. A quiet, comfortable routine.

Armin would visit your room after a long day, carrying a book under his arm, and settle in beside you. Some nights, he’d read aloud, his soft voice filling the air like a lullaby. Other nights, you’d read in companionable silence, your legs tucked beneath you as he absentmindedly turned the pages beside you.

But without fail, at some point, his head would grow heavy.

His voice would trail off mid-sentence. His grip on the book would loosen. His blinks would slow until his ocean-blue eyes finally fluttered shut.

And then, just like always, he would fall asleep on your shoulder.

At first, you had tried to wake him. “Armin,” you’d whisper, nudging him gently. “Go to bed properly.”

He’d mumble something incoherent in response, barely stirring. Then, without meaning to, he’d shift closer, his warm breath tickling your neck as he nestled into you.

It became impossible to move after that.

So you stopped trying.

Instead, you learned to let him rest. To stay perfectly still, your own heart betraying you with the way it raced in your chest.

And maybe—you started to enjoy it.

Maybe you liked the way his blond hair tickled your skin. Maybe you liked the way his breathing slowed, steady and peaceful, like he felt safest beside you.

Maybe you liked the way his fingers would twitch against yours in his sleep, as if even unconscious, he was still reaching for you.

You weren’t sure if he ever noticed the way you would quietly adjust his blanket, making sure he was warm. Or the way you sometimes let your fingers brush through his hair, absentmindedly playing with the golden strands.

You weren’t sure if he noticed the way you never tried to push him away.

One night, as you sat there once again with his head against your shoulder, the book resting forgotten in his lap, you whispered, “Armin?”

Nothing.

You exhaled softly, a small, amused smile tugging at your lips.

“You always do this,” you murmured, careful not to wake him. “You say, just one more chapter... and then you fall asleep on me.”

He made a sleepy, unintelligible sound in response, his nose brushing against your collarbone.

You felt your heart stutter.

It wasn’t fair.

It wasn’t fair how effortlessly he made you fall for him, how natural it felt to let him stay close.

Maybe one day, you’d have the courage to tell him.

But for now…

For now, you simply leaned your head against his, closing your eyes with a quiet sigh.

You’d let him stay.

Just one more chapter.

Just one more night.

Are we really gonna sit here and call Armin a crybaby like what everyone was put through is normal? He’s the normal one for crying fr. Hell I would have cried a whole lot more than him💀

He was also burdened with some of the most difficult decisions in the show which were often out of his control (him or Erwin/becoming the commander of the scout regiment) which only added to his self loathing and snowballed it into a mountain of stress for him, pushing him to su1cide attempts on multiple occasions.

Above all, everyone experiences emotions differently so leave the poor guy alone😭😭

He pulled you close, one hand settling on your waist, the other lacing fingers with yours. There was no structure to the way he moved—just a gentle, swaying rhythm, like he wasn’t really dancing, just holding you while the music played.

His forehead brushed against yours, his breath warm as he whispered, “You know… I never really did things like this when I was younger.”

You tilted your head slightly, watching the way his lashes lowered. “Things like what?”

He chuckled, a quiet, breathy sound. “Yeah. But now… I think the best ones are the little moments like this.”

Your heart squeezed, warmth blooming deep in your chest.

“Armin,” you murmured, lifting your head to meet his gaze.

He was already looking at you, his blue eyes soft, filled with something so deep, so tender, that it stole your breath away.

“I love you,” he whispered.

It wasn’t the first time he’d said it, but somehow, in this moment—wrapped up in him, the music humming around you, the whole world feeling small and quiet—it felt new.

You smiled, reaching up to brush his soft blonde hair from his forehead.

“I love you too,” you whispered back.

Armin let out a shaky breath, like he had been holding it in, and then—gently, carefully—he leaned in, pressing the softest, most delicate kiss against your lips.

It wasn’t rushed, wasn’t urgent. Just a slow, tender moment—like he was memorizing the feel of you, like he wanted to stay like this forever.

And as the song played on, the two of you swayed in the middle of the kitchen, lost in a world that belonged to no one but you.

Speaking from personal experience, the cry baby to emotional intelligence pipeline is real.

Not enough people talk about how good of a friend Armin was to Eren and how in touch he was with not only his own emotions but other people’s as well, so I’m gonna say my piece.

This scene always comes to mind. Armin notices that Eren is shaking and asks him if he’s scared.

Eren, being a teenage boy who thinks he’s tough shit (for lack of better words), immediately gets defensive as a gut reaction to what he probably perceives as an accusation instead of a genuine observation (again, because he’s a teenage boy who thinks he’s tough shit).

Armin’s response to that is to empathise with Eren and show sensitivity and solidarity, like: “Hey it’s okay if you’re scared dude, I’m shaking too.”

He’s not ashamed of the fact that he’s afraid because he knows that it’s a perfectly normal human response to the situation he’s in. He even goes so far as to physically show Eren that he’s trembling as well, and Eren’s demeanour changes immediately after that.

Even in this scene where Eren, Mikasa and Armin have canons pointed at them, Armin is able to understand and empathise with the fact that the Garrison soldiers’ hostility towards them is due to them being scared because they don’t know what’s happening.

In the early days of the fandom, when season one was airing especially, a lot of fans were very quick to label Armin as a crybaby, but the thing is that Armin is just as intelligent emotionally as he is logistically.

He’s able to identify his own emotions and express them healthily (most of the time), which means that he cries more often than other characters because he’s going through a hell of a lot throughout the series and his output for those emotions of fear, grief and stress is tears. Of course he’s also guilty of bottling them up at times — nobody’s perfect — but he generally just seems to have a better grasp and understanding of his own feelings and the feelings of others than many other characters.
