Inside the Avalanche’s Cup celebration: ‘All these champions skating around’
From The Athletic
TAMPA, Fla. — Standing on the ice at Amalie Arena, soaking in sweat and tears and the emotions that come with reaching hockey’s peak, Gabriel Landeskog harkened back to his draft day, back to when he was a clean-shaven kid with a full NHL career ahead of him. He told reporters at the time that he had a photo of Peter Forsberg and the 2001 Avalanche Stanley Cup team hanging from his bedroom wall in Stockholm. His goal — his dream — was to be in a picture like that one day.
On Sunday night, he got his wish.
After Colorado’s 2-1 victory in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final, Landeskog looked around him, surveying his jubilant teammates.
“I’m just so happy to see all these champions skating around,” he said.
As captain, Landeskog was the first to hoist the Stanley Cup. And as much as he’d longed to touch the trophy, he couldn’t wait to give it away. He’d made a promise during harder times — before Cale Makar and Presidents’ Trophy contention — to teammate Erik Johnson, his close friend and the longest-tenured Avalanche player. Be ready, he had said. Because whatever day the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup, he’d hand Johnson the trophy first.
“If that doesn’t give you motivation, I don’t know what does,” Johnson said. “Who would’ve thought? Five years ago, dead last in the NHL. Now we’re Stanley Cup champions.”
As the final horn sounded, Johnson and Nathan MacKinnon met, tackling each other away from the rest of the main group. They rolled around, embracing one another. Both were on the 2016-17 team that had one of the worst seasons of the NHL’s salary-cap era, logging only 48 points in the standings — more than 20 worse than the next-closest team. And in the post-win celebration, the remaining players from that roster — Landeskog, Johnson, MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and J.T. Compher — gathered for a picture near center ice, finally as victorious as could be.
“It’s special no matter how you win this thing,” Compher said. “But in the few years since that season, seeing all the work that’s gone in…”
MacKinnon, who scored the game-tying goal in the second period Sunday, found his parents, Graham and Kathy, as soon as they walked onto the ice. He cried in his dad’s arms. “I kind of get flashbacks to my whole childhood, my whole life,” said the center, who finished second to Makar in Conn Smythe Trophy voting. “It feels amazing.”

Makar, the defenseman who moves the puck like a yo-yo and skates like a gazelle, completed a rare combo with the Norris Trophy and Conn Smythe this season. And he had help: His mom, Laura, had ditched her lucky outfit after the Avalanche’s Game 5 loss, and she ate kale salads ahead of games 4 and 6, both Colorado victories. A mother’s touch works wonders.
Laura wasn’t alone in attendance. Cale’s dad, Gary, was there, too, as well as Taylor, Cale’s younger brother and a 2021 Avalanche seventh-round draft pick.
“Growing up, playing mini-sticks when we were little kids, getting in fights, stuff like that,” Taylor said. “It’s everything he’s always wanted, what our family has wanted.”
Around the ice, players FaceTimed with loved ones who couldn’t make the trip. Andre Burakovsky shared a moment on the phone with his dad, Robert, and Bowen Byram grinned into a screen at his sister, Jamie. “I’ll drink your share of the beer,” their dad, Shawn, joked.
Johnson accidentally knocked Sportsnet contributor Ken Wiebe’s recorder out of his hands while reaching for a family member’s phone. He apologized as Wiebe jokingly called for a two-minute roughing penalty.
Darren Helm cried while holding his daughter. Makar stood arm-in-arm with Devon Toews, his defensive partner. Andrew Cogliano’s mom pulled Jack Johnson in for a hug. Erik Johnson said he needed a beer. (And there was plenty to come later in the evening.)
There was Nazem Kadri, his thumb still bandaged. He broke it in multiple places but found a way to turn a six-week recovery into two. Burakovsky battled through a broken ankle to play the first two Stanley Cup Final games but was finally kept out by a thumb injury. Cogliano, who has played 1,140 regular-season games, waiting and hoping for this moment, played with pins in his broken middle finger. Worth it?
“Fuckin’ right,” he said.
To reach their goal, the Avalanche had to knock off the two-time-defending Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning. And after taking the lead in the second period, Colorado executed a clinical third, limiting Tampa Bay to only two shots on goal and generating a plethora of scoring chances the other way. With a clear at the final horn, the game ended. The Avalanche had won.
“We went out there and probably played one of the most perfect clinching third periods in the history of hockey,” Byram said.
Added goalie Darcy Kuemper, who finished the night with 22 saves: “That was some of the best hockey I’ve ever watched. To have the Cup on the line and come out like we did and not give up everything, it was a special effort.”
General manager Joe Sakic, the team’s architect, posed for pictures with his family, and he said hello to Toews’ parents, Werner and Tammy, who thanked him for taking on a chance on their son in a 2020 trade from the New York Islanders. It’s a deal Sakic would do a million times over: He paid only two second-round picks for Toews, and the defenseman has finished 11th and eighth in Norris Trophy voting the past two years, respectively.
“I don’t know if it’s really soaked in yet,” Werner said. “It’s incredible. It’s a hard road.”
A little before 2 a.m. Eastern, the Cup left the building in the hands of a jubilant Landeskog, whose mood was perhaps buoyed by a couple of drinks. A procession of teammates walked with him, including Josh Manson, carrying an NHL championship belt over his shoulder, and Makar with Oakley goggles — champagne protection — on his forehead. “Post that on Twitter!” Byram yelled, wearing an unbuttoned shirt and suit jacket while double-fisting champagne bottles. Landeskog showed off the trophy to the media members still at the rink working, with one message to share.
“We’re taking it back to Denver!”
Valeri Nichushkin and MacKinnon were among the last to leave. Nichushkin, dealing with a suspected foot injury, got a ride from a stadium worker on a flatbed dolly usually used for transporting crates, a bottle in his left hand. MacKinnon walked behind him, laughing at his teammate, victorious at last.

Supernatural Fair Fight Livestream Recap with timestamps
(based off of the notes I took while watching live. any errors are mine and not the fault of the cast or abrams)
21:01 Panel Starts. Misha introduces panel- Stacey Abrams, Jensen Ackles, Jared Padelecki, Erik Kripke, Berto the ASL interpreter.
21:02 Stacey Abrams talks about how she got into SPN. Talks about running for governor(?) in California(?), having trouble gathering support/campaign funds. On a particularly bad day, ends up watching SPN in her hotel room. Loves it, ends up watching the whole show after this. Quotes “Even if it’s hard we can’t stop” and “who else is going to do this” and talks about keeping going.
21:05 Kripke: “Wow”
Ackles: “That’s one of the most beautiful interpretations of what we do, how we tell the story.”
21:06 Kripke: “Grateful we could provide inspiration”
21:07 JarPad: *reiterates above* joke about how “Kripke’s writing is questionable at best.”
21:08 Misha: “The reason we tell stories is to inspire people” creates an allegory about the ‘invisible enemy’ of voter suppression with the invisible enemy trope common in storytelling. “As we made the show, we were taking inspiration from [Abrams]”
21:09 Kripke asks Abrams to tell more about Fair Fight
21:09 Abrams talks about a secretary of state(?) [whose name I didn’t catch but who JPad refers to as ‘Lucifer”] who was in charge of voter registries in Georgia who wrongfully removed thousands of voters from lists, closed essential polling locations, and prevented people from voting, which disproportionately impacted POC and youth voters, and led to 8+ hour wait times in remaining locations. Abrams tells of how her and FF acted to fix this and change the whole system for the better. “If this becomes about politicians, no one is going to care, but when it becomes about people’s [list of basic rights and essential services]...” “...Patriotic belief that democracy means that if you’re eligible to vote, you get to be heard. Fair Fight is committed to ensuring that every voter in the US has the right to vote, and we are pretty good at it.”
21:16 Misha voices concerns about Trump’s attempts to make the 2020 vote counts seem unreliable.
21:17 Abrams gives an in-depth history of voter suppression in the US, committed by both parties at various times, including restrictions on mail-in votes, ID laws, and something about the voting rights act.
21:18 A bunch more panelists join in, including Jake Abel, Felicia Day, and a number of other SPN cast members.
21:19 Abrams says that in Texas a gun license is a valid id to vote, but a college id is not. “Everyone should get to participate, not just the chosen.” Mentions that she has not seen the final 3 episodes yet, request no spoilers until she logs out.
21:22 Kripke thanks Abrams for her political work.
21:22 Felicia Day says she was very excited to meet Abrams at Dragon Con.
21:33 Misha and Kripke try to move panel along to comply with Abrams limited time availability.
21:24 Rachel Miner “We all admire you [Abrams], you’re our hero.”
21:25 JPad gives a long speech thanking Abrams that was too fast to write down verbatim. “It’s important that everyone have their own voice” says it’s an honor to meet Abrams.
21:26 Bob Singer asks a question about Purdue(?) not showing up to a debate.
21:27 Abrams gives a detailed answer about swing states, swing voters, the lack of swing voters in Georgia, and the relatively small impact that Purdue(?) missing a debate would have on his numbers. Long speech about mail-in voting.
21:29 Sebastian Roche asks a question about run-off votes. Abrams answers.
21:30 Rachel Miner asks a question about voter registration descrimination against people w foreign names.
21:31 Abrams talks about how this has happened and what Fair Fight is doing to combat it, and how Fair Fight’s legal actions have managed to significantly reduce the amount of mail-in ballots thrown out for having difficult to understand names on them.
21:33 Shoshanna Stern thanks Abrams for her efforts in making voting more disability accessible.
21:34 Abrams answers, gives more info on the subject and the importance of having accessible voting locations.
21:36 Jim Beaver says it’s wonderful to be able to talk to Abrams, etc.
21:37 Abrams realizes her time has just about run out, and says thank yous and good byes. Mentions that tomorrow is her birthday. Multiple members of the cast wish her a happy birthday. More goodbyes from everyone, and thank yous to and from Abrams. Abrams exits call.
21:39 Kripke and Misha encourage people to donate to FF
21:41 Misha and Jensen rib each other, joke about an open bar.
21:41 Misha “Now we’re just going to waste your time for half an hour now that she’s gone”
21:42 Curtis Armstrong tells a short story about his mother, who was a voter activist in Detroit and Switzerland, and how nice it was to see Abrams talk.
21:43 Trivia intro. Multiple jokes made at the same time about state capitals.
21:44 Jim Beaver “When my kid was 7, I asked her the capital of Vermont and she said V”
21:44 Kripke asks semi-serious question about what JPad wore as protection in the ball-crusher Japanese game show scene in Changing Channels.
21:45 JPad “A thimble. A mini-thimble. No, a cup.” says something else about the cup.
21:46 Ackles “Our special effects team likes to go above and beyond”
21:46 JPad comments about real fear in that scene
21:46 Misha tries to get trivia back on track. “Without powers, what does Dean say Cas is?”
------[Baby in a trenchcoat]
“Other name of the Impala?”
Julie McNiven guesses “A special place”. Someone calls out “baby”
-----[Metallicar]
“Name of Sam and Jess’s friend who goes with them to the bar in the pilot?”
Even JPad, who was in the scene, does not know. Kripke comments that it was named after an irl friend of his from Tiuanna, named LUIS.
“5 works Kripke ripped off for SPN?”
Everyone guessing at once, including: Animal House, On The Road, Good Omens, Constantine, Star Wars, and several others.
“What herpes medication does Sam have to do a commercial for?”
[Herpexia]
21:52 JPad and Julie rib each other about herpes meds, and argue whether the term is prescription or subscription for medication. One of them brings up the example of having a subscription to dog food.
21:52 Jake Abel “What if your dog has herpes?”
Misha “I only hope that Stacey Abrams has tuned in”
Seb makes another joke about state capitals, then asks JPad the capital of Albania.
Jared has no idea, guesses ‘new albania’
Seb “Tirana” talks about having lived on a boat, presumably near Albania.
Rob Benedict: “Thanks for tuning in”
Bob Singer asks who knows the story of Seb getting a massage at VAncouver airport.
Jared (paraphrased) “We all fly through Vancouver airport a lot. Just past security there’s a massage place [with the chairs where you face the floor].” One day JPad and Ackles went through security and saw Seb getting a massage. They go over, convince the masseuse [who knows them all at this point] to let JPad take over. Seb does not notice, despite the fact that the masseuse is a small woman and JPad is holding his hands weird to try to make them smaller. JPad says he put his hands down Seb’s back and up his shirt, and Seb still did not notice, just making a noise and saying ‘very nice’. JPad gets as far as groping Seb’s ass before Seb notices anything is up. This is still the middle of a busy airport.
21:58 Seb “It was strangely sensual. Thank you, Robert, for bringing that up.” “I was perturbed for the whole flight back.”
Ackles “Another highbrow story”
Seb “It’s really fun being on that set. It really is” Claims they are also serious sometimes, to which there is laughter in response.
Ackles “It going to be like that on The Boys, Krip?”
Kripke “No massages to completion”
Seb “Wait there was no completion”
Krip “Saw photos of [Ackles’s] supersuit today”
Multiple jokes from several people about Ackle costume for The Boys being assless, crotchless, entirely made of paint, and cowboy-themed.
22:01 Misha “time for about 5 minutes of outtakes”
Someone jokes about adding ‘give Seb a massage’ as a donation tier.
Misha thanks the fans, says he loves and misses all the cast. Asks Rob B to sing.
22:02 Rob B “tune into my radio show” [for singing]
22:03 Misha announced that $225,000 has been raised for charity so far in the stream.
More thank yous from everyone to everyone, including the zoom team.
22:04 Seb “Vote out Mitch McConnel:
Jensen “Such as British accent to tell us who to vote for”
Seb “I’m half French half Scottish”
Jensen and Seb joke about scottish and french alcohols, and how they can’t be mixed.
22:05 Kripke thanks the fans for 15 years. Everyone else joins in on thanking fans for 15 years.
Jake Abel “There was a big gap in there for me somewhere”
Seb asks if Jake was in the first season.
22:06 Jake “3rd, 5, and 15”
Seb gives long thank you speech.
Jensen talks about how the cast is sticking together “This group is not being dispersed”...”I take comfort in knowing this” jokes that they’re stuck together whether they like it or not.
Misha “Like herpes”
Felicia “Genital or otherwise”
22:07 gag reel begins, including Misha’s ‘on-camera finger, Jensen falling off a chair “furniture could use some work”, Jensen failing to pick a lock for a very long time and Jared asking ‘Cas” to open it, Jensen saying ‘hail misha’ instead of ‘hail mary’, Misha failing to keep a straight face while looking at Alex Calvert, Jensen eating something too hot(?), and more that someone has probably already uploaded in full anyway.
21:13 stream ends.

Inner Demons Vs Demons (pt. 1)
I've learned a lot on this "journey" I hate saying that. Corny now when I think of it. I can't stand corny expressions. It just sounds...bad. In songs, I let it slide for the sack of my love for music. I can't deal with it. But there are SOME songs I just can listen to without gagging. Eeeew get that shit out of my ears. When I'm at a department store depending on my mood. Like if I'm PMSing, it all goes to hell. xD rofl!
Annnnyway...So with all the info I gatherd over the past two years --Almost two years. OMG that's crazy! I've decided since we are talking about Satan and demons, why the fuck not, right? By the way, I decided to not go the interview kind of last minute. I didnt realize it was so far. Oh well. I kind of was a shitty job. The one I'm going to looks more promissing. I mean 700/wk sounds bitchin! I've not made that much or more in a long time. I miss my old job. I was making upwards up at least 1k a week or 4k a month on average until the owner closed up shop. I was doing Debt Settlement and student loan Debt Consolidation. I'm afraid I lost all legal lingo and information...But if you have debt, --any kind of debt, it ain't yers until they prove it. They cannot collect a payment until they do. It's kind of a hassel and even more when you have to log every debt collector. Most people don't like doing the work. It's thier debt but we did the negotiation with creditor on a settlement amount. Those jobs were great! Unfortunately the owners were doing some shady shit and I had no idea. Well...I thought it was weird they were passing out cash left and right for "closers" which was cool. To boost morale I guess. Whatever it kind of turned me off from doing that kind of work.
Inner Demons...
Depression, anxiety, hate, anger...All of those things are inner demons and boy do they fuck you up. It's like your mind plays tricks on you and if you give in or let it consume you, you're fucked and thats when you need to seek "professional" help. I put quotes because some doctors have a stick up thier ass and act like they are a specialist in everything so getting a proper diagnosis is a bitch. Here's the thing though: "these inner demons are all psychological." When you really use mindfulness correctly. I mean really thinking and remembering why you incarnated or got this far through life. In my case, thinking "too much" being "logical" as an analyst (just about always in my head) and left brained ( is that right?) it comes in handy in SOME
situations. Like whne you need to solve a problem for connect some dots. Even when you practice Mindfullness, it is thinking logically. Logic and common sense make a huge difference and it changes your perpective. It's thinking too much that isn't healthy or productive. You're just asking for trouble. Inner demons are like yourself beating you up. Beating up yourself by nit-picking on what you deam impossible or bad about you. When you zoom in on those things, it creats a problem. That's where prayer (spells) come in and you out of that "funck" as Erik calls it. LOL Funk reminds me stinky garbage, poop and nastiness. To me it's no different then saying "moist" Ugghhh I just can't. "crusty" and "Rusty" ROFLMAO. When I delt with my clients, if someone name was Dusty I would often have to put on muste and laugh my ass off. What the fuck?? I hear so many weird names. I shouldnt make fun but you have to admit it's kind of hilarious!

Alex Edler’s special night comes after years of consistent play
For much of his 12 years with the Vancouver Canucks, Alex Edler has been defined by the things he is not.
He never became the Norris Trophy candidate he had the potential to be. He does not dominate physically often enough. He is not a No. 1 defenceman as most people define it, not a classic power play quarterback. He is not emotional, not fiery, not loud in any way. In some games, he is not even particularly noticeable. Now 31-years-old, the soft-spoken defenceman never became a true star in the National Hockey League.
And yet with all these "failings," what Alex Edler became Friday was the highest scoring defenceman in franchise history, which tells you something about how special he really is.
Edler had a pair of assists in the Canucks’ 4-3 overtime loss to the Nashville Predators, who overcame a two-goal deficit, tied the game late in the third and won it on Calle Jarnkrock’s top-corner shot 43 seconds into overtime.
Playing some of the best hockey of his career last two months after it seemed like his decline would follow the team’s, Edler passed former mentor Mattias Ohlund’s 325 points on the Canucks’ career scoring list.
Ohlund’s name is already on the Canucks’ Ring of Honour inside Rogers Arena. One day, flaws and all, Edler will be there, too.
"There’s been a lot of criticism," Canucks captain Henrik Sedin said of his teammate. "I think that comes from coming in as young as he was and doing a lot of good things right away. I think people put an unfair expectation on him. But he’s one of those guys who shows up every game. There’s a mistake here and there, which happens for everyone. But him playing D and top minutes every night, maybe you notice it more because he’s playing against every team’s top guys and (mistakes) come back and hurt you sometimes.
"Eddie’s a great defenceman, the best this team has had in a long time and maybe ever. But I don’t think people realize the little things he does on a nightly basis. He plays hurt; he’s an old-school guy that way. He goes out and battles."
Edler logged 25:58 of ice time against the Predators, and that doesn’t include his brief twirl to acknowledge the standing ovation that occurred when his milestone was announced at the end of regulation time.
Canucks defenceman Erik Gudbranson was speared in the crotch by Predator Ryan Johansen, whose major penalty halfway through the third period cost Nashville a goal but not the game.
But no one looked more uncomfortable than Edler did in the spotlight.
"I’m happy the fans had a chance to recognize him," Sedin said. "But I don’t know how much he enjoyed it."
Edler was discovered by scout Thomas Gradin playing in obscurity in a semi-pro beer league at age 18, and as a third-rounder in 2004 became one of the great draft picks in Canucks history.
His entire career has been spent with the Canucks. Friday was his 741st game.
"I think early on I was pretty inconsistent like a lot of young Ds," Edler said. "The coaches worked on me to get more consistent and I think that’s what I got better at later in my career. When I look at Mattias Ohlund, he was always consistent. That’s what I always wanted to be as a defenceman in this league."
But what about all the things other people wanted him to be?
"I think I’ve always tried to focus what’s expected from myself and my coaches and my teammates, and not so much what’s around me," he said. "I think my game has been going the same as the team where we’ve had a few years where the team wasn’t as good and my game flattened out a little bit."
But he agreed he is playing better now. It’s an uptick in performance most players can’t manufacture in their 30s once their game starts to erode.
Edler has 26 points in 53 games this season, which is already his second-best total in the last six years.
He would have enjoyed his special night far more had the Canucks won. But the Predators, legitimate Stanley Cup contenders, exerted their will after falling behind 2-0.
After Daniel Sedin flipped in his own rebound – Edler had the second assist – to put the Canucks ahead 3-2 at 11:54 of the third period during Johansen’s penalty, Ryan Ellis’ slapshot past Vancouver winger Jake Virtanen and goalie Jacob Markstrom tied it 3-3 at 17:45.
It was the second straight overtime loss for the Canucks, but in many ways more impressive than their 6-5 thrill-ride Wednesday against the New York Rangers.
The Canucks moved up several weight classes Friday.
It wasn’t a fluke last season that the Predators made it to the Stanley Cup final, and it shouldn’t shock anyone if they win a championship in June. An excellent team has been made even better by the mid-season additions of Kyle Turris and Ryan Hartman, and the Predators’ brought to Vancouver a six-game winning streak in which they had outscored opponents 29-12.
But the Canucks, who have had more moral victories lately than real ones, pushed the pace early and was three minutes away from winning.
Edler wasn’t the only player to have a special night.
Former Nashville captain Mike Fisher, signed out of retirement, scored in his first game since last season. For the 37-year-old and his team, everything is now a rehearsal for the playoffs. There are much bigger games ahead for Nashville.
Edler’s biggest game was Friday.

European Qualifiers: What to watch out for this week – European Qualifiers
Germany-Netherlands IV
“Football in its purest form,” Franz Beckenbauer says of games between these great rivals. Three meetings over the past 12 months have lived up to the billing, delivering 12 goals, seesawing fortunes and thrilling finishes – all featured last-minute goals! The Netherlands had the edge in the UEFA Nations League, relegating their neighbours in the process, but it was first blood Germany in EURO 2020 qualifying. Another win in Hamburg would reassert German ascendancy and, with Northern Ireland yet to drop a point in Group C, dent Oranje hopes.
Friday: Germany v Netherlands, Estonia v Belarus Monday: Northern Ireland v Germany, Estonia v Netherlands
And the qualifying top scorer is …

Zahavi inspires Israel against Austria
Eran Zahavi’s international career looked to be over two years ago after he quit in the wake of a very public row with Israel fans. Andi Herzog made convincing the striker to change his mind top priority when he took the reins last summer and the Austrian’s endeavours have not gone unrewarded. Seven goals in four qualifiers, including back-to-back hat-tricks against Austria and Latvia, is some return even for a player who has managed almost a goal per game in four seasons in China. Israel fans have let bygones be bygones.

Portugal running out of room

How Portugal won Nations League
“These matches are decisive,” reckons coach Fernando Santos. “I want to qualify directly, in first place. We’ve reached a point where we have to win the remaining games.” Bearing in mind Portugal have only played two qualifiers, this sounds a bit alarmist, but there’s no room for complacency after a pair of draws. Unbeaten Ukraine have a handsome lead in Group B and if Portugal slip up in Serbia on Saturday they could soon find themselves adrift of the top two.
Saturday: Lithuania v Ukraine, Serbia v Portugal Tuesday: Lithuania v Portugal, Luxembourg v Serbia
Can Iceland do it again?

Highlights: Iceland 2-1 Turkey
Erik Hamrén is into his second year as Iceland boss and, after initially struggling to arrest a slide that saw a run of 15 games without a win, things are beginning to fall in place. June’s victory against Turkey was an important signpost (as it was in UEFA EURO 2016 and 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying) and Group H is shaping up to be a three-way battle between the pair and France. Three into two doesn’t go, though, and Iceland cannot afford any missteps this week.

Pukki leads Finland charge

Highlights: Finland 2-0 Bosnia and Herzegovina
Teemu Pukki has hit the ground running in the Premier League, five goals in four games earning him the player of the month award for August. But can he do it on a lukewarm night in Tampere? We already know the answer (just ask Bosnia and Herzegovina), and his form is raising hopes that 2020 will finally be the year Finland make their major finals bow. This week could be pivotal, and a repeat of last year’s 2-0 win against Greece could help establish a six-point cushion over third spot.
Thursday: Armenia v Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina v Liechtenstein, Finland v Greece Sunday: Armenia v Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland v Italy, Greece v Liechtenstein
England playing the long game

Highlights: Montenegro 1-5 England
“We only have eight matches before I name the squad for the European Championship,” England manager Gareth Southgate said, giving a nod to Mr Freud as he explained the infusion of youth and new faces in his squad. The approach betrays a new-found confidence for the Three Lions. England haven’t lost a major tournament qualifier for nearly a decade so can afford to take a long-term approach and boost competition for places.
Saturday: Kosovo v Czech Republic, England v Bulgaria Tuesday: England v Kosovo, Montenegro v Czech Republic
Can Slovakia steal a march?
Log in for free to watch the highlights
Highlights: Slovakia 2-0 Hungary
Group E is perhaps the most competitive of all ten sections. Four of the five teams graced UEFA EURO 2016 and, not even halfway through 2020 qualifying, all have lost at least once. This week could be defining and Slovakia take centre stage, hosting Croatia before a trip to Hungary. Away form has been their Achilles heel, with a solitary win against European opposition outside of Trnava in two years.
Friday: Slovakia v Croatia, Wales v Azerbaijan Monday: Azerbaijan v Croatia, Hungary v Slovakia
Romania on the rise

Highlights: Norway 3-3 Sweden
Spain are odds on for a 14th successive major finals appearance (second only to Germany in Europe) after four wins out of four, but the race to join them is anyone’s guess. Sweden and Norway have ambitions, and watch out for their rematch after March’s six-goal thriller, but what about Romania? Cosmin Contra’s side have lost just once in 14 games and this summer’s run to the U21 EURO semis showed that talent runs deep. Ianis Hagi, a star in Italy, makes the step up.

Pens Round 3 Recap
The goal of the Ottawa Senators was to slow the series down and boy did they ever. Man to man, the Penguins had the far superior roster. Ottawa knew they couldn’t match us on open ice. So they had to try something else. Fortunately, good coaching and talent still prevailed.
Trap Busters: In order to clog the neutral zone, the Senators implemented a 1-3-1 trap. In all reality, the Penguins broke the trap. The Pens were readily able to enter the offensive zone. That’s why we were able to maintain offensive pressure for such long periods. But breaking the neutral zone trap is only half the battle. Where the Senators really shined is their defensive zone discipline and collapsing around Anderson. Every time the Pens sent the puck along the sides or below the face off circles, the Senators defense collapsed. This prevented the Penguins from creating good close range chances on Anderson. The Penguins, later in the series, found a lot of success with low to high passes (see Maatta’s goals and Kunitz’ series winner). But overall, the Penguins were limited in their quality chances, giving Anderson easier saves than they would have liked.
Diamonds in the Rough: The Senators are an average team. They had no business taking the Penguins to 7 games. But they were elevated by a conservative, disciplined system along with two studs: Erik Karlsson and Craig Anderson. Karlsson is not a surprise. He logged more minutes than anyone else in the series and spent most of his time vs. Sid. His offensive prowess was on display but his defense was the biggest surprise. He spent most of his time annoyingly breaking up passes and busting odd man breaks. I was very impressed with his defensive ability that I thought we could have exploited. He ended up elevating the Senators for 3 rounds. Very impressive. Craig Anderson was a bigger surprise. Anderson was always known as a decent goalie who was susceptible to bad goals and strings of bad play. We saw that in game 5, but that was it. With the Senators’ defense limiting tough chances against him, Craig made most of the saves he needed to. He seemed to make tough saves, even when he didn’t see it coming. Boy was that aggravating, but still impressive.
Trust Captain Sully: Can Sullivan do any wrong? I would not have subbed Murray in for Fleury. Flower had one bad game in an otherwise stellar postseason. Despite that, Sullivan switched to Murray, and Murray went on to give up 6 goals in 4 games. Do I think Flower wins the series still? Yes. But that doesn’t change the fact that this bold decision worked. His other fantastic decision was how to punish Karlsson. Sully switched lines up to include a hitter on every line. He put Kunitz with Sid, Wilson with Geno, Rowney with Bonino. Whoever was out there vs Karlsson (especially Kunitz) had a focus on him and their goal was to bury him. Hit him every shift. It caused Karlsson to make some poor decisions, thus leading to turnovers. From Game 4 on, the Penguins possession numbers spiked, thanks in large part to this Karlsson hunt. Kudos to Mike Sullivan.
Overall, I never really doubted the Penguins were the better team. Although, after all the bounces continued to favor the Senators, it was frustrating beyond belief (especially in 2OT of Game 7). But as these Penguins proved all year, not insane injuries, not non-existent refereeing, were going to stop this team from returning to the Stanley Cup.

Early Peak Returns
Lynch is easily in the pantheon of the great directors of all time. If Mullholland and Inland didn’t clinch, the new Twin Peaks does. As have been saying from the outset, this was going to be Lynch’s magnum opus and a definitive masterpiece. Though I must say, I didn’t expect Peaks to be this exactly. I read a piece just before Sunday that alluded to what Peaks might look like based on his past few films. Very abstract yet artistic — a true auteur for sure. Now a cinematic genius on par with Kubrik? The visuals alone are striking. All the shots look like his paintings come to life, especially the tree in the Lodge with flesh for brains.… I love the panning across the Lodge floor in the opening, gets the viewer disoriented from the start. I only watched P1+2 Sunday night, watched P3 Monday, and tonight I’m rewatching P1–3 before watching P4. So I’m Peaking out tonight. Might watch again before P5 on June 5.… I read Lynch didn’t want Showtime to dump all the parts at once for people to binge watch. After all that effort preplanning for years and then the long production and edit times, plus the build up of anticipation and keeping a tight lid on any leaks, Lynch didn’t want the audience to blow their load so quick binging. Lynch wants us to watch and digest for a period of time before consuming more. The series is so dense now, I would actually prefer a week in between showings. It will end in September.

It's hard core Lynch to say the least… I'll do a pro's con's list.
PRO's We now know what happened to Cooper after ep 23. And it's unexpected and interesting. YES. And a revelation in phylosipy, even though he had Bob in him when he exited the Lodge, We also know his doppleganger is on the loose, which is NOT BOB inhabbited. So which is which? Muahahah.
Ben & Jerry are still together and in their character. Love Jerry's new persuit. doesn't he say most of the Hotel profits come from his pot sales? Something like that. Next time around, I am gonna watch with subtitles on. Good to see the Log Lady, but sad as well. She looks very sick. Albert looks pretty good, knowing how sick he was.
Watching Catherine so frail takes me right out of the moment. Al Strobel, too. And Carl the Giant. But that works in this story because it’s 25 years later.… There was a nice onscreen pause right after Hawk and Catherine hangup. Lynch lingers on Hawk a good 5–10 seconds, I can’t help but believe intended as a moment of silence to Catherine Coulson — somewhat in line with Judge Sternwood’s aside, taking a brief moment. I bet Lynch intended that while editing, since Catherine had died by then. Just a thought.

Denise Bryson in charge of the FBI YES! LOLOLOLOLOL what else can I say? Lynch is free to Paint Nightmare images on screen again. This all surpasses anything in Fire Walk With Me. Much more like Lost Highway and his Short Films. And his revenge on Michael J Anderson (who said, "I want a million dollars, I'm irreplaceable"). the Arm has "evolved" into A Failed Art Project Tree! LOLOL
Lynch is a painter, filmmaker, and also makes music — Twin Peaks is all of his artistic vision in one medium. This series will be talked about for quite a while, and this singular work will make grand fodder for many film scholars. I think Peaks will stand up to one of the best TV series of all time, mostly because of this recent Series 3.
We are hearing back story about Philip Jeffries (if only Bowie had lived) Helps me believe there is a story thread deep under all this that connects things together. May be hard to follow, but it's there. It's like the X-files on outdated acid. Beautifully shot and sound designed. But we knew that was always going to be true. Not seeing a lot of Snoqualmie yet though.
Love the drone over the Falls shot… dissolved into the wavey red curtains — like a river flowing. Curtains in Blue Velvet intro, too, right?… I notice the titles have more horizontal spacing between characters, undoubtedly adapted to fit widescreen ratio.
New intruiging characteres.. I am liking most of them, though Coop killed some very pretty girls already..(Marsha Marsha Marsha!!) lol Sorry I had to. :P There are so many it's hard to keep track. (how many Coopers are there?) IMDB has updated the Peaks page with all the Actors and their character names. I printed it out and have it on hand while watching now.
Good idea.… On my iPad. Check.
Findingout what some classic characters have been up to. Bobby? Wow...that was a twist. Natural place for Hawk to be. Lucy Lucy, a career receptionist. Jury is still out on Jacoby. Expanding the story beyond the Northwest. They did so in the film a bit, and we are not stopping now. We have a LOT of ground to cover to find these new locations. Coop has even gone into Space...or did he? WTF? LOL … A return to Glastonberry Grove. We saw Hawk up there, but then the story just skips the rest. Did he see the curtins? Did he try to go in? He doesn't even mention it when we see him later (Bobby's Reveal). I could not tell if it was the same place they shot the Grove for the series. I will try to get down there and see if the area has been disturbed. But I see numerous shots in The Return that could have been shot up at Franklin Pond.
I looks to me that Hawk saw the curtains, but knowing the Black/White Lodge mythology knows not to fuck with them. I see Hawk having a significant role in bringing Cooper back, I bet he’s directly involved at some point.… Is that what Peaks is officially being names as, Twin Peaks: The Return? I’ve read that a bunch in reviews.
CON's Where the HELL is all the awesome music??? I mean, for real? you got Angelo hired and you are scoring entire scenes with Dave Brubeck's Take 5? And the Angelo music we do hear is straight off the Original soundtrack or the Twin Peaks Archive. Very strange. That is what is missing for me the most. I want the drums shuffling under the scenes damn it! Even the movie had this.
I was thinking the very same thing — where’s new soundtrack music and sounds? I only seem to hear a low bass rumble in varying degrees of difference and tone. And it looks like each part is going to end at the Bang Bang Club featuring a different band each night. I get the idea, kinda a good way to feature new music but hope they are atleast songs written for the series and not cherry picked from existing albums. I mean, if Lynch handpicked each performer to appear then ok, I can tolerate that. But why not a Bang Bang house band that played Badalamenti arrangements each night — original compositions of new music for The Return. There would be a slightly more elevated buzz about the series if Lynch graced us with new Badalamenti music.
Ben & Jerry appear for 3 or less minutes in part 1 and it has nothing to do with anything at all and then they are gone. (same with James and Shelly and Mrs. Palmer, even Leland had no purpose). Where is Audrey, Norma, Big Ed & Nadine, Doc Hayward and the rest? I will wait patiently, but I am missing the RR. (NO pie or donuts references yet at all, one coffee moment so far)
…One coffee moment so far that leads to death! Or is it the act of sex that leads to death?! I don’t know… maybe one and the same. But I agree, I really wish there is more conventional story line featuring the characters of TP, because that’s what made Peaks, as well — not only the Lodge, Giant, Dwarf, BOB, et al. It was the quirky characters that we all enjoyed. Even if the storyline plays us new ones, I’d like to see a narrative that I don’t have to decipher or wait until the scholarly writings appear.
The Music Video endings. Sorry, but really? The songs and cinamatography are not even all that special. It's like listening to KCRW in the morning.lol When Julie Cruise was on stage, it was special. The music was special, the atmosphere was special. It was an important moment in the story. But I guess it's a good way to segway into the end credits, but also seems like a waste of story telling time. Where is Mark Frost's influence and dialogue? We may never know. But it's never gonna be all that quirky funny abusrd character dialogue. It's almost like there are TOO many characters. (Mullholand Drivesh)
I was thinking this a lot, too, yes. Did Frost sign off on all this? Doesn't he know Lynch is very imaginative and has a penchant for tearing up scripts and shoots whatever he wants?? What’s the script for all the Lynch imagery that has only sound, no dialog?
And his scenes in the Casino? Priceless. But I hate seeing Cooper as a total idiot, unable to speak or compreihend his surroundings after he fell out of the sky. Oh well, I know he is coming back soon. So all of this adds up to a Solid A rating from me. VERY strong and VERY engaging. I am on board for the run. Hope we get to watch at least one episode together this summer! PS...Better get your arm checked out. lol
Let's descend on Dom for a Sunday viewing and dinner.

In some reviews I’ve read, there’s been several mentions about the NYC shots, how impressive they are.… Dom, I knew immediately as it was playing out onscreen that you were loving the couple getting decimated! And with good reason —it was easily as terrifying as the White Walkers.
`All the scenes in NYC are fucking brilliant. `Evil Dale is fucking awesome. Another fucking grand entrance.
I frickin’ luv the new Dale! What a fucking bad ass. Kyle plays him well, too. I totally believe him as (big bad) BOB Cooper.
`Weird they went out of their way to say James has always been cool because its universally known James is weak sauce.
`Will every episode end in with a musical performance at the Roadhouse?
`What the fuck is Jacoby up too?
`So happy Jerry is in the weed business.
`The first scene with evil Cooper in that trailer with those weirdos was awesome. What did Ray and Darya give to the freak in the wheelchair as they walked by?
`The last 10 - 12 minutes of the 4th episode with Gordon and Albert is maybe my new favorite sequence of all Peaks. Fucking perfect. Fucking awesome acting by Lynch there too.
`The beginning of the third episode with that chick with her eyelids sewn shut was also hardcore Lynch. Love it.
`I honestly felt Bobby Briggs was going to turn to the light side and join the Bookhouse Boys based on the dream his father had about him 25 years ago. I did not expect him to be a fricking deputy though. I wonder if he is a Bookhouse boy now though?
I'm about to go watch some more. I truly hope you two are enjoying it as much as I am. Channel 33 "The Ringer" did a great break down of the return of Peaks today. Worth the listen.

Stanley Cup Playoffs - 5 Things We Learnt From Round 2
Erik Karlsson is the undisputed best player in the 2017 Playoffs
It is a shame that the two time Norris Trophy winner has needed these playoffs to have a coming out party, but the playoffs highlight the best players on the biggest stage and currently Karlsson is that guy. Currently Karlsson has been on the ice for each of the 8 game winning goals scored by the Senators, 6 of which he has been directly involved with (2 goals and 4 assists). Karlsson has always been absolutely unreal in the regular season, boasting five 60 or more point seasons, as well as being a complete defensive player and taking over the captaincy of the Sens. Now he is stepping up and helping the Senators challenge and take down 2 very challenging opponents in 6 games. Captain Karl not only is over a point per game, but is logging 28+ minutes of ice time a night, blocking 2 shots a game and has thrown out 18 hits in the 11 games he has suited up. Did I mention he is doing this all with 2 hairline fractures in his foot. A remarkable effort and one that will be tested even further, as the Sens tackle the reigning champs and seemingly unbeatable Penguins. Ottawa clearly has the edge on defense, but the Penguins have Crosby and Malkin. This series will be the matchup between Fleury and Anderson that decides the series. Look for Karlsson to dominate the play as he has done through the first 2 rounds.
The Washington Capitals have claimed ‘The biggest chokers’ award from the San Jose Sharks
For so long the Sharks have been labelled as chokers. 2 trips to the Conference finals and 2 wins away from the Stanley Cup compared to loss after loss in the second round sees a new winner of the biggest chokers award. The Washington Capitals cannot get passed the second round of the playoffs now choking 2 consecutive President’s Trophies away with a second round loss to the Penguins. Momentum seemingly gone, the Caps used their speed and Holtby to claw back into the series. Consecutive wins, a home game 7, I would have picked them to win 99 times out of 100. Don’t bet against the Penguins.
Two statistics that really shine from this loss are
1. Most Regular Season Wins - Coaches to Never Reach Conference Finals or Finals Barry Trotz with 713
2. Most Career Goals – Never Played in Conference Finals or Finals Marcel ONE ONE - Dionne 731 TWO - Alex Ovechkin 558
The Clutch gene is just not with this club. Unfortunately for Alex Ovechkin, once again the finger is squarely pointed right at him. Demoted to the third line for much of the series against the Penguins, he finished with a disappointing 5 goals and 3 assists and a -4 rating throughout the 13 games. The Caps were even lucky to make it passed the very young and inexperienced Maple Leafs as 5 of the 6 games went to Overtime and we all know, those games can go either way with 1 lucky bounce. Will we see drastic changes, or do the Capitals management trust the system and hope the Penguins don’t come across them in the second round. Time will tell.
The Oilers will win a cup in the next 3 years
Wow the Oilers looked good in game 6. If they hadn’t done the unthinkable in Game 5, by giving up a 3 goal lead with 3 minutes remaining, then I might be writing about how they are the new favourite to win the cup. That’s hockey sometimes, things can change with 1 unlucky bounce. It would have been really easy for them to turtle and go down in 6 against a very experienced and deep Ducks team, but they came out swinging and blasted the Ducks off the face of the earth 7-1. The Oilers finally met their match in game 7 as a bigger, stronger, veteran team finally shoved the monkey of their game 7 back. When you look at the Oilers though, they are strikingly similar to the 2006-07 Penguins. A very young team, with a bright future and a need to lose before they can win. The Pens in 06-07 were far worse off than this Oilers team though, as they ran into the Cup Final destined Senators and only pinched 1 win in the first round.
2 dynamic scorers and a solid young goalie can lead you a long way. Just ask Malkin, Crosby and Fleury, or Toews, Kane and Crawford. The Oilers have the pieces in place and if they could lure a big piece on Defense (Kev Shattenkirk maybe) then they would be set for a deep run with the experience from this season as reference. McDavid will definitely need to step up even further if the Oilers are to lift the cup, as he was smothered by Braun and Vlasic and then held pointless in game 6 and 7 of round 2, in which his team needed him the most. I can’t wait to see how this team responds next season.
Nashville’s big moves have created the perfect combination
Boy doesn’t Dave Poile look like an absolute genius right now. It started with acquiring Filip Forsberg for Martin Erat. Then big moves have paved the way for success. Ryan Johansen for Seth Jones, P.K Subban for Shea Weber, James Neal for Patric Hornqvist and the like. This has shaped the style and culture of the Predators who have seemingly been making big moves forever. Acquiring Peter Forsberg for a run in 2007, Poile has proven he is not afraid of sending players and picks away to get a return. Currently this is the most dynamic and deep teams I have seen in a long time and everything is clicking at exactly the right time. The defense is creating offense, the offense is supporting with Good defense and Pekka Rinne is a brick wall boasting a .951 save percentage and allowing on 14 goals through the first 2 rounds. It is hard to lose when your goalie is playing this well. Despite the loss of Fiala, Nashville are deep everywhere and have the pieces to make a deep run. A top 4 defensive core of Subban, Josi, Ekholm and the absolutely on fire Ryan Ellis has every team fearing matchups. They not only stop you, throw hits, block shots and take away ice, but they spring breakaways and control the offensive zone unlike any team I have ever seen. Dynamic finishers in Forsberg, Johansen, Arvidsson and Neal provide a team that is hard to stop. If Mike Fisher gets his offense going, this team is going to be very hard to stop.
The hottest team wins the Stanley Cup
What I have noticed as the NBA and NHL playoffs matchup head to head is the sad fact that the NBA always sees the best teams make it through to the Finals. It creates a boring predictable nature to the first few rounds. Currently if the Cavaliers and Warriors don’t meet for the third consecutive year in the Finals I will be very surprised. It makes for a boring, mundane run to the inevitable before the actual good basketball games are happening. What is worse is the competition is not nearly as stiff and players are not giving everything they have to win, in comparison to Hockey Players. I love the NBA, but it cannot be argued that having the same teams meet year, after year and the same player for that matter (Lebron will be playing in his 7th straight NBA final if the Cavs make it through) is bad for fans of other teams.
The hockey on the other hand sees new teams every year, the hottest teams flying through the playoffs and making successful runs and entertaining games. While similar teams have been winning in the past few years, there has been new opponents every year, new matchups in the playoffs and rivalries built on intense matchups. Hot teams like the Sharks and Penguins last year, the 2012 LA Kings, the Boston Bruins in 2011 and so on, make the game thrilling. Who would have thought that the scorching hot Predators would be sending home the Blackhawks, who many picked to win in a dominating sweep. Who would have thought the Senators would be challenging for a place in the Stanley Cup Finals after missing the playoffs last year. This is why the NHL continues to be inspiring and so hard to win.
Fun fact - We could see a reunion to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the Anaheim vs Ottawa Stanley Cup Final matchup. Not many people would have predicted that at the end of the year.

Ramblings: Kucherov Suspended One Game, Kadri Suspension Looming, Caps/Preds/Avs Win In OT (Apr 14)
Nikita Kucherov has been suspended one game for his hit on Markus Nutivaara on Friday. Fair or not, that’s about what I thought he would receive.
Although Art Ross Trophy winner Kucherov was the top-ranked player in playoff pools, he has been held without a point in two games so far and will still be scoreless in the playoffs after Game 3 because of his suspension. Steven Stamkos and Brayden Point, who were projected to go second and third, have also been held without a point in the first two games (see our Dobber Hockey Experts Panel picks for more). In addition, Kucherov has been held to just two goals in his last 14 playoff games. He’s been getting it done and then some in the regular season, but not so much in the playoffs when the intensity is turned up several notches.
So if the Lightning are eliminated in the first round, does that mean the folks that didn’t pick any Lightning players will win their playoff pools? It probably isn’t that simple, but it goes to show that playoff pools aren’t as easy to predict as you might think and sometimes a counterintuitive strategy (although more risky) wins in the end. The silver lining is that if the Bolts come back and win this series, you’ll probably get the same four or five games of production out of them than you thought you would receive from them in the first round anyway.
It's funny how in two short games that the narrative on the Lightning has shifted from being the model franchise to the ultimate choke team. A win in Game 3 would go a long way toward righting the ship. A loss, well…
*
Not to worry, Connor McDavid owners. It sounds like he won’t need surgery for a small PCL ligament tear. The injury from the final game of the season looked a lot worse.
*
On to Saturday’s game action:
Carolina/Washington
Noted goal scorer Brooks Orpik scored 1:48 into overtime to give the Capitals a 4-3 win in Game 2 and a 2-0 series lead heading back to Carolina. Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, T.J. Oshie, and Evgeny Kuznetsov each recorded two points for the Capitals. Ovechkin also dished seven hits (not sure if any playoff pools out there count hits).
Man, was Rod Brind’Amour ever pissed after Micheal Ferland was ejected after his attempted check to the head of Nic Dowd. Ferland recklessly throwing hits in playoff games is nothing new, but my initial thought was two-minute penalty. Like any of these types of hits, it’s subject to debate, though.
Ferland gets thrown out of the game for a check to the head pic.twitter.com/gSAHQkdoV7
— Pete Blackburn (@PeteBlackburn) April 13, 2019
Fortunately for the Hurricanes, the Capitals weren’t able to score on the ensuing five-minute power play. Fortunately for the Capitals, Dowd was able to return to the game. I highly doubt Ferland is suspended for this hit.
Dallas/Nashville
Aside from fans of the Stars and Predators, this series might be considered by many to be the least interesting of the bunch. So if we call it the country and western series, would that make it more interesting? Such deep hockey commentary, I know.
Craig Smith scored exactly five minutes into overtime to give the Predators a 2-1 win over the Stars, evening the series at 1-1 heading back to Dallas for Game 3. Smith also led the Predators with six shots on goal in this game.
In spite of the loss, Ben Bishop was stellar, stopping 40 of 42 shots to keep the Stars in this game. With his 1.92 GAA and .946 SV% in two playoff games, Bishop is carrying a strong regular season into the playoffs, where he has been the Stars’ best player so far. Bishop finished the regular season with a 1.98 GAA and .934 SV% and seven shutouts, which are numbers that could result in a Vezina Trophy nomination.
Wayne Simmonds left in the first period after blocking a shot. He wasn’t having a great season by his standards before his trade to Nashville (27 points and a minus-20 in 62 games), but his numbers have taken a further nosedive with the Predators (3 points in 17 games). Even if you figured that the Preds would make a deep playoff run, Simmonds probably isn’t someone you should have targeted in your playoff pool. Some team will probably overpay for the 30-year-old’s services this offseason. Don’t be the one who adopts a similar strategy in your fantasy league, as the power forward’s point totals have been on the decline for the past three seasons.
Mattias Janmark left in the second period after crashing awkwardly into the boards, but he was able to return to the game.
Toronto/Boston
The new divisional format was designed to build rivalries, and this doesn’t seem any more apparent than with these two teams. In other words, they don’t like each other. Fans of other divisional foes (and even some outside the division) might be pulling for the team they dislike less as opposed to the team they like more in this series. If these fans can’t figure out which team that would be, they’d simply hope that these two teams beat the crap out of each other. Well, these two teams might already be headed down that path.
Nazem Kadri has been offered an in-person hearing for his crosscheck to the face of Jake DeBrusk, which means that the league can suspend him for more than five games. Because he’s a repeat offender, Kadri’s going to sit multiple games for sure. That’s even with any perceived advantages that Toronto receives from the NHL office and even with the knee-on-knee collision with DeBrusk earlier in the game likely motivating the hit. I realize hockey is a sport about getting payback when someone on the other team crosses the line, but that reasoning isn’t going to carry weight here. Kadri should know better.
I’d imagine this lands Kadri a suspension pic.twitter.com/LXi9ZovoS5
— Pete Blackburn (@PeteBlackburn) April 14, 2019
Kadri’s game misconduct in the third period gave the Bruins a five-minute power play, where they were able to ice the game with an insurance goal en route to a 4-1 victory and a tie in the series heading back to Toronto.
Torey Krug left this game in the second period after taking a hit from Jake Muzzin. Charlie McAvoy totaled nearly 26 minutes in this game, so expect the Bruins to lean heavily on the 21-year-old d-man should Krug miss any time. Connor Clifton, another d-man, also didn’t finish the game for the Bruins.
Auston Matthews is receiving a lot of criticism from Leafs’ fans regarding his playoff performance. Dating back to last season’s series with the Bruins, Matthews has just two points and a minus-5 in his last nine playoff games. He may be struggling to handle the more physical play of the playoffs, or he simply doesn’t match up well against the Bruins. Matthews has the size (6-3, 223 lb.), but not everyone with size has the desire to play a physical style. With Kadri out of the lineup for the foreseeable future, the Leafs will need to lean even more heavily on him.
Colorado/Calgary
By far the biggest question regarding the Flames entering the playoffs was their goaltending. Mike Smith had been downright awful during significant stretches of the season, so would he be able to hold up during the playoffs? Why didn’t the Flames give David Rittich a go instead?
Smith has found his game and then some. Since he doesn’t fit the definition of a stud goalie, he fits the definition of a hot goalie, which can just as well get the job done in the playoffs if he can be hot for long enough. Unfortunately, Smith couldn’t hold off the Avalanche for this entire game. The Avs looked like the better team in Game 2 regardless of the outcome. Regardless, they won in overtime on Nathan MacKinnon’s first goal of the playoffs.
Even though Smith has a brief playoff history for a goalie of his service time, his career playoff numbers are outstanding (11-8, 1.79 GAA, .947 SV% entering Game 2). Maybe that could have counted for something in Bill Peters’ decision to start him in Game 1? The numbers aren’t recent, though, as his last playoff experience was in 2011-12 when he led the Coyotes to the conference final (his playoff numbers are mainly from that season). It’s more likely that Smith’s much-improved play swayed the decision (9-5-1, 2.08 GAA, .916 SV% since February 14).
By the way, MacKinnon fired seven shots on goal in logging over 26 minutes, the most of any Avalanche forward. Not known for his offensive prowess, Erik Johnson also fired seven shots on goal.
After a Game 1 where they were firing on all cylinders, the Flames looked like a strong bet to head to Denver with a 2-0 series lead. Regardless, this series is also tied at 1 and could be more interesting than we first thought. One reason is that Philipp Grubauer has also been a hot goalie.

How To Use A Pendulum/Trance-Channeling 101
You are developing a psychic connection with your Twin Flame in spirit. The way I go about this is sort of like using a Oujia Board. I know what you must be thinking. Calm your tits!
First off if you want to use this method to talk to your guides/twin flame, you need protection! It doesn't have to be elaborate or require bells and whistles. I laugh at some of the "rituals" *smh* all kinds of crazy shit... So not necessary but power to the people. 😆
You can protect yourself by smudging sage in every corner or wave that shit around (don't cause a fire though. I almost did! Lol) in every room of the house or space. Say silently or aloud a prayer for protection. You can burn some hundu kush too (Seriously. Smoke some weed. Mother earth produced it! ). I suggest calling upon Archangels Michael and Raphael to ensure only communication with your TF/Guides. Set the intention. The stuff here in bullets is extra. If it makes you feel better you can add this shit too:
- After that it's also important to imagine a white light surrounding you or even green and blue for Archangels Michael and Raphael. You can also wear white.
- What I like to do is play music off our playlist or anything positive. There's a lot of meditation music on YouTube.
- Take a few moments to calm and collect yourself. Make sure you are comfortable and for certain you will have no interruptions.
(*˘︶˘*).。.:*♡ A Crystal clear suggestion
Before you decide to communicate I suggest a crystal (because they come directly from the earth) pendulum that is charged and cleared of negative energy. Doesn't have to be elaborate but some crystals might not do well in sea salt water. Make sure its okay. Mine are amythest, rose quartz and clear quarts. I let them sit in natural sea salt water. Himalayan salt might work too, not sure about commercial table salt. Just by letting it sit for a few minutes (5), I really notice a change in clarity of the crystal. You can also collect some used or crushed up smudging sage and toss your crystal in a bowl allowing to sit overnight over night or whatever. You can also burn sage in a safe bowl and allow the crystal to bathe in the smoke a bit. Another way is by digging a hole and let it sit in the earth for about a day. Maybe close to a flower garden!
Making your "board"
ヽ(・∀・)ノ
You also need to make a Oujia Board! It doesn't have to elaborate either. I use sketch paper (if you don't laminate, it will eventually look raggy and you need to shred it, burn it and set the intention that the portal is permanently destroyed). I like to pour positive energy on to it, use Chakra colors, and as an "artist" I like to draw the flower of life and color it all pretty and stuff. It's not a bad idea to write a few prayers on it too. I suggest laminating it so it stays pretty. I'll attach an example.
( - _ - )ノ彡☆ EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: As a word of caution, after all you are opening a portal to the spirit world; Your board needs to be cleared too! At the end of every session say good-byes, your thanks and your prayers for continued protection with the intent of closing the portal.
( ^O ^ )ノ彡☆ The more you know!
Getting shit started yall
☆*:.。.o(≧▽≦)o.。.:*☆
At first, it might be a little slow or not move at all. Don't give up. Just keep trying a little bit everyday. Try not to force a response or you might just pick up wishful thinking answers. Be present! Don't let your mind wander. Focus on just looking at the crystal. Eventually you will go into trance. Trance is nothing to be afraid of. It's no different than automatic writing or watching T.V. It's actually very similar. You have complete awareness and control of yourself. Keep a pen and paper close to you. When the crystal moves to the letter or you feel a slight pull (really cool actually), hover over that letter and if a letter is correct it will circle. Incorrect, it's will cross through. For yes and no questions, YES is up and down the middle as if he's nodding and circles around the entire thing when a NO. It may differ from person to person. When Erik gets excited the letter just pop, when he's sad or sappy, it's very slow. Hopefully you won't have a TF/Guide with the tendency to get all "ADD". I have to ask him the slow down all the time.
At first you might not know right away if the messages are coming from your own expectations or honest guidance from your guides. Eventually if you practice long enough (Takes time and dedication, but if you really want to talk to your guides you will do it. Trust me.) you can tell by word choice or the energy you feel. Whats cool is sometimes I think I know what Erik is going to say but he tugs to the right word or letter. I've played tug of War with him too. It was hilarious!
Document, document, document!
You are going to be tempted to ask a shit load of questions. Just write them down and ask one a day. You might also be surprised they might just flat out answer them right away.
Keep a log or journal of your conversation. You will wish you did! You will see a progress and it's nice to take a look back ever so often. Especially if you are talking to your TF/Guides you will start to realise you are developing psychic skills. It's baby steps. It didn't happen over night for me. It's at a point now I can finish sentences and he let's me know if I'm correct or he will simply set me straight.
I hope in some ways this is helpful. It really doesn't need to take a "gifted psychic" to talk to your TF/Guides. After all... WE ALL ARE CAPABLE! It's a matter of intention and will.
If you have anything you want to add or whatever comment or inbox me!

Game Three: Five Things to Watch For
The Sixers can get it done without Joel Embiid.
That might be the biggest topic of the past 48 hours, Joel’s game three status, but we’re talking about a team that just won nine games in a row minus the superstar center.
When you re-watch game two, you can look at Miami’s increased pressure and physical play and tip your hat to Dwyane Wade for his phenomenal individual effort. You can also look at the fact that the Sixers didn’t shoot the ball well, suffered a horrendous second quarter, and still cut the lead to two points deep in the fourth quarter.
Going with the glass half full approach, we’ll start with that topic:
1. Uncontested Field Goals
How much of the Sixers’ shooting struggles were due to Miami’s more intense approach, versus simply missing open shots?
Luckily for us, the NBA keeps statistics to help us determine that.
I edited the chart below to show each player’s minutes and overall field goal percentage. The other six categories are fairly straightforward:
CFGM = contested field goals made
CFGA = contested field goals attempted
CFG% = contested field goal percentage
UFGM = uncontested field goals made
UFGA = uncontested field goals attempted
UFG% = uncontested field goal percentage
The NBA defines a contested field goal as “any shot where the closest defender is within 3.5 feet.”
Taking that into account, here you go:
They only shot 30.2% on uncontested looks. JJ Redick was especially poor here, hitting just 1-9 vs. a 3-4 contested field goal mark. Marco Belinelli hit just 3 of 10 uncontested looks and Robert Covington was 2-7.
For comparison, those three players were 6-10 (Redick), 6-11 (Belinelli), and 3-6 (Covington) in this category in game one. The entire team was 56.5% in uncontested field goals, so it lends a lot of truth to the idea that they just weren’t hitting on Monday night. Still, you give credit to Miami for being disruptive and pestering on the perimeter and making guys more uncomfortable in general, but I highly doubt the Sixers shoot 19.4% from three again this series.
2. A whole lot of BS
Hassan Whiteside has been a total non-factor in this series. I think he’s mentally soft and doesn’t possess any sort of killer instinct or competitive attitude.
If you want a stat to show how little he’s been involved, consider the fact that he only accounted for 17 of Miami’s 397 touches in game one. He threw 9 of their 277 passes. Those numbers barely changed in game two, with 15 of 367 touches and 10 of 244 passes.
Through two games, he has 6 total points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks, 5 turnovers, and 6 field goal attempts. He’s played just 27 minutes.
That makes Embiid’s eventual re-introduction interesting to me. Does Embiid’s return inspire Whiteside at all, considering the past beef? He’s obviously more suited to bang in the low post with a guy like Joel, vs. sliding around the floor and trying to keep an eye on Ilyasova or Saric.
I know Whiteside has had some nagging injuries and only played in 50-some games this year, but I thought we might see something different in the playoffs.
Not really.
It seems to be a continuation of the way he finished the season, with Erik Spoelstra frequently going small and turning to Kelly Olynyk and rookie Bam Adebayo down the stretch. That led to Whiteside dropping this quote after a bad loss to Brooklyn:
“Man, it’s annoying,” said Whiteside, who was pulled for good with 3:55 to play in the third quarter. “Why we matching up? We got one of the best centers in the league. Why we matching up? A lot of teams don’t have a good center. They’re going to use their strength.
“It’s bullshit. It’s really bullshit, man,” Whiteside said. “There’s a lot of teams that could use a center. Shit. That’s bullshit.”
We’ll see if Spoestra continues with the same “bullshit” in game three.
3. What’s left in those legs?
The general consensus was that Dywane Wade would be capable of stealing at least one game in this series. He did that Monday night both literally and figuratively, scoring 28 points off the bench and slapping the ball away from Dario Saric in a sequence that kicked off a 6-0 fourth quarter run.
Does he have the legs to do it again? How much gas is left in the tank?
Wade only played 26 minutes Monday night, so it’s not like he needed to go 40+ in some Herculean effort. He was efficient as hell, hitting his first seven shots of the game, a bunch of mid-range stuff that you’re probably willing to live with.
For what it’s worth, Wade played more regular season games against the Sixers than any other team, putting up 15.9 PPG on 50% shooting in 24 average minutes:
Compare that to season averages of 11.4 PPG and 22.7 minutes, with a 45.5 FG% in Cleveland and a 40.9 FG% since returning to Miami. He’s performed at a higher level against the Sixers this year.
Here’s how he did in all five of those games:
11/27 (Cavs): 15 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 41.7 FG%, 25 minutes
12/9 (Cavs): 13 points, 1 rebound, 4 assists, 60.0 FG%, 24 minutes
2/14 (Heat): 8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 30.9 FG%, 23 minutes
2/27 (Heat): 27 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 62.5 FG%, 25 minutes
3/8 (Heat): 16 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 53.8 FG%, 23 minutes
And the playoff games:
4/14 (Heat, game one): 11 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 57.1 FG%, 19 minutes
4/16 (Heat, game two): 28 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 68.8 FG%, 26 minutes
It’s impressive stuff, really just one clunker in there, the 2/14 game where he failed to reach double digit points.
Based on all of that, and considering that he hasn’t logged a ton of minutes, it’s not unreasonable to think that he could rip off another big game in this series. We’re talking about a guy with three rings and a hell of a lot of playoff experience. This is where he thrives.
4. Rebounding
For all the talk of the Sixers playing smaller lineups with Ersan Ilyasova and Dario Saric as a 5/4 combination, there really hasn’t been much of a drop off on the glass.
Ilyasova has 25 rebounds through games one and two, more than any other player on either squad. He pulled 6 off the offensive glass in game two alone, and according to NBA tracking stats, those boards came from 9 offensive rebounding chances (ORBC), so he was successful on 66% of his rebounding opportunities off missed shots.
Coming into the series, Miami was 9th in the NBA at disallowing second chance points, just 11.7 per game. But the Sixers poured in 27 of ’em in game two. Part of that, of course, is that they missed a lot of their first attempts. You can’t get offensive rebounds if you aren’t putting up bricks in the first place, but watch for that tonight and see if Philly can again be successful on the glass despite playing small and keeping stretch bigs on the floor. Spoelstra has turned to Kelly Olynyk frequently and has had more success with him on the floor. That keeps Whiteside on the bench, but like I said, it’s not like he’s changing the game when he’s out there.
5. Playing inside to outside
Miami showed some full court press in the second quarter of game two, which really threw the Sixers off their rhythm.
One of the ways to combat that, instead of screening off the ball to get shooters open, is to throw screens at the ball-handler to alleviate higher defensive pick-up points.
This is what I mean:
Redick’s back screen there causes some confusion, with James Johnson sticking to Simmons and Josh Richardson switching instead. JJ slides out to hit the team’s second successful three-pointer on 14 tries.
This plays well to the Sixers’ strengths, because if Miami switches there, Simmons can go down and post up the smaller Richardson while Redick has a slower and bigger guy on him. They can’t pester your point guard on the perimeter if he’s 6’10” and possessing the ball on the low block instead:
If you watched Villanova at all this year, you saw Jalen Brunson do this. He’s not 6’10”, but he did a nice job of posting up similarly sized guards and then allowing his shooters to fan out on the perimeter.
That shot above was Redick’s only three pointer of the game. He missed his other six attempts, most of which involved a lot of legwork, him running horizontally off screens while Miami went over the top and tried to prevent easy looks. In this case, Redick was working vertically and popping out to the line, instead of trying to lose a pesky defender by dragging him sideways.
The only other instance I saw of inside-to-outside passing with Redick was here:
No screen there, and it might have been a broken play, but Redick is popping to the perimeter off some 1/2 action, which gets him a decent enough look.
So keep an eye on how the Sixers look to get their shooters open in game three against a more physical team that really wants to go over screens. High defensive pressure makes opponents ripe for backside picks and a high/low passing game, and you can probably rag them on a UCLA cut or two. If Embiid plays, you can dump it down to him in the post and let him either work 1v1 or pass out of late double teams in that inside-to-outside fashion.
More than anything, they just need to hit their open shots and they’ll be fine, with or without Joel.

Pig Stuffed Animal, Pig Stuffed Animals
The pigs living in the higher atmosphere took an optimistic method to the sound that they had by no means heard earlier than and went on to approach it with the expectation they would get the deal with (the apple). The opposite pigs, living in the area which was not as pleasant, took the opposite approach and had been cautious of the noise thus did not try to come back ahead for the treat. The reactions of the pigs is similar to the way people feel and can react when approached with one thing ambiguous. For example, if your boss calls you into your office on a day when you're feeling notably confused and out of types, you will doubtless conclude that you have carried out something incorrect. Alternatively, if your day has been a constructive one and you might be known as into the boss' workplace, you might assume you can be greeted with praise and, even a raise. She has given me that look tons of of times and it is in situations like at the moment when i query if I have made many selections in any respect! I've had to assume, really exhausting! Anyway at the moment was husbandry day. It was the day for multiple injections, Vitamin Advert & E, worming and Lambivac vaccinations. Three injections each for forty alpacas, in 5 separate fields. Proper whilst I used to be out there I took some photographs. Firstly one for Andrew who complained that I had not saved him absolutely informed as to the state of Tsars poop. It is a reasonably graphic shot of a Tsar poop moments after it was delivered this morning. As you can see it remains to be loose however firmly loose. That is I'm afraid nonetheless right down to the Professional-kolin paste which we're giving him, without it he really is loose! So we are going to keep going with it and periodically attempt to wean him off it.
Yesterday we attended the first day of the South West Alpaca Group Spring Show, a high quality show with 300 or so alpacas entered. The primary day was the coloured alpacas day. The Present Group was prepared after much thought in preparation. We had decided to travel up on the morning of the present. It meant getting up at 4am however we wanted the alpacas going into the ring in tip prime condition and this appeared the way to do it. They were slightly damp on arrival but quickly dried off in the warm spring sunshine within the outdoor pen we made subsequent to the Mighty Incas. They seemed good. First up could be Ruby Might within the junior black female. I used to be excited, so excited I could hardly contain myself. Ruby looked improbable. It was a giant class and I used to be in good company, sandwiched between the glamour ladies of Inca, Karen and Tara, with Euphoria and Enigma respectively. She appeared good and i knew she was in with a chance. I then appeared to my right and saw a very nice looking Bozedown lady and to my left was the equally impressive wanting Cinnamon from Amiryck. This was going to be tough. I started to get very nervous. The judge gave the line up a very good inspection after which walked away to confer with other people. What was occurring? A couple of minutes later she was back and Bozedown took the 1st place. Who was going to get second? Millie was that's who! I was very near kissing everyone inside range. Karen and Cinammon picked up third which was good. I made it fairly clear beforehand that I needed revenge however I didn't need to beat them by a couple of place. I was back within the ring a couple of minutes later for the brown female championship and was delighted when the Bozedown lady obtained the top prize as it meant we were in with a shout.

One thing I was concerned about was whether I needed to start with fertilized eggs and hatch them, or if I may get child chicks or even full grown adult hens. I found that I didn't have to invest in an incubator since I may get the child chicks shipped to me by first class mail. The book provided a full education of what I wanted to raise chickens at home. Another thing I realized is that I needed to resolve between egg laying hens and meat birds. What I imply is that the chickens you get at the market are different than those who lay the eggs we eat for breakfast. Egg laying hens can provide eggs for a yr or extra, whereas the meat chickens are designed to get to full measurement in eight-12 weeks and are then able to go to the butcher. The Unbelievable Chickens ebook offered a lot in the best way of rationalization and assist. For instance, hens begin to lay eggs when they attain about five months previous, and each hen will provide about five to seven eggs per week. One other fascinating point is that a rooster will not be essential for the hens to lay their eggs. This was a nice shock, since I didn't want any neighbors complaining a couple of daybreak wakeup call! So was I happy with the Unbelievable Chickens e-book? You bet I was! If you are fascinated by raising chickens of your own, you will not go fallacious with this e-book. It tells you everything you will have to know to boost chickens and eggs which can be blissful and wholesome. Georgia lives in rural Wyoming with her husband, Noah, and dog, Jake. I tried, for the final several weeks, simply to make a dinner attend my little, little bit of house along with only my pet. The dinner was actually really good, I really like the rouse deep-fried vegetables- truly yummy. Excellent, high quality meals is the perfect BUT there are some canines that can easily not handle this and also do better on the economical convenience food. No necessity for supper tonight so our team retired to the log cabin to kick back off such an active expedition day.

Cine Gear Expo: Three Cameras
Canon, Panasonic, and Sony all used Cine Gear Expo 2017 as the event to anchor their announcements of new cine-oriented cameras. What they revealed says much about where the industry is going, and when they revealed it speaks to the growing importance of Cine Gear as an industry show.
Canon C200 & C200B
C200 side panel. Yeah, you hang a decent lens on it, it gets nose-heavy.
Canon revealed the C200 and C200B a few days early on May 31st—and it’s clear they laid the groundwork some time prior to that. Jon Fauer (as usual) had with all facts and a good set of photos ready to roll, and Elliot Smith was good to go with a hands-on review. Erik Naso pondered whether the C200s are good upgrades for C100 and C300 users, and why. On the day Cine Gear opened, Andy Stout delved further in the new CinemaRaw Light codec, and of course Canon already has a set of C200 white papers available.
CFast card slot on the left, dual SD slots in the rear.
From the top: two XLR inputs, SDI out, headphone / USB ports, RJ-45 networking port, DC IN. On the side: HDMI.
Side grip with joystick, Fn button, dial control
The side grip uses a standard ARRI rosette for easy accessorizing
C200 LCD with buttons and joystick
There’s been a lot of discussion about this $6000–$7500 4K camcorder (the lower price is for an EVF-less, body-only C200B; the higher price includes EVF, LCD, top handle, and side grip). Many are distressed that the camera records only 8-bit 4:2:0 MP4 files to SD cards and DCI 4K Cinema Raw Light to CFast cards: the former is felt to be too lightweight for “serious” work while the latter is not cheap: a 64GB FCFast card will be consumed in a mere five minutes at 23.98 fps. (Gripers will be somewhat mollified by the promise of a future firmware upgrade to add XF-AVC recording, which offers 10 bits and/or 4:2:2 or even 4:4:4 sampling in its various flavors, though I don’t know which flavors the C200s will offer.)
People often grumble when Canon releases a new camera, whether in the EOS or Cinema EOS lines, usually saying (a) it’s too expensive for what it does, (b) it’s not pushing the envelope nearly as much as it should, and/or (c) they’ve completely misunderstood the market and built something nobody wants or needs. And yet, somehow, whatever overpriced, under-specced, missed-the-market camera Canon announces goes on to lead a happy and productive life. I think the C200/C200B will follow the same course.
I had a chat with Canon’s Paul Hawxhurst about point (c): who did they build this camera for? His answer was quite specific, though I’ve paraphrased it a bit: the C200 is for the C100 shooters who need an affordable, practical camera for their mundane day gigs, but want to step up their game on special projects. Plain, boring old 8-bit 4:2:0 MP4 will handle the long recording times and manageable file sizes needed for corporate talking heads, explainer videos, and the like, while Cinema Raw Light provides the grading flexibility and image quality for higher-end work—and it’s still more manageable and affordable than hanging an external recorder off the back.
While a 64 GB card may be consumed in 5 minutes, you can get cards up to half a Terabyte in capacity, for about 40 minutes of continuous recording time. And yes, CFast cards are expensive, but they’re like film magazines, not film loads: they’re reusable containers, not expendables.
And, he said with his snarky hat on, if you’re already spending too much money on an “overpriced” Canon, why are you fussing about “overpriced” CFast cards? Remember when P2 cards came out? Or SxS? Or XQD? All new, fast media are annoyingly expensive. True, CFast isn’t that “new” any more, but there’s a global NAND flash shortage at the moment, and even commodity SSDs have suffered rising prices in recent months. Take a deep breath, buy some “digital mags” that’ll last the life of the camera or beyond, and get on with life.
Like many of the commentariat, I was a bit puzzled by the C200s when I first saw the specs and the pricing. But the more I thought about it, the more I think Canon knows exactly what it’s doing. The camera marks a further refinement and streamlining of the physical package, and the capabilities and price slot it neatly between the C100 Mk II and the C300 Mk II. The C200 may not make a lot of sense to “outsiders”, but those in the Canon camp—a somewhat hermetic society, like Apple or Leica users—are likely to adopt it with the same enthusiasm as they have other Cinema EOS cameras.
Note that all the bits ‘n’ pieces needed to make the $7500 C200 out of the $6000 C200B can be ordered a la carte, with the exception of the pigtail EVF. If you want the EVF, you’ll need to buy the C200; you can’t add that EVF to the C200B at a later date.
My only serious complaint is that the C200s employ the standard bayonet mount for the EF lenses, rather than the far superior breech-lock / positive-locking EF mount on the C500 and C700. Bayonet-mounted lenses can flex and wobble on the body, which they are wont to do once you hook up a follow-focus or drive motor; this is a sadly missed opportunity to continue the trend that Canon already started towards making a more stable EF attachment for cine uses.
The C200s are scheduled to ship in August.
Panasonic AU-EVA1
Panasonic tantalized crowds with a mockup of the AU-EVA1 under a cloth at NAB 2017; at Cine Gear Expo two mockups were unveiled: one under glass, and one in the hands of the indefatigable Mitch Gross.
Mitch Gross and the AU-EVA1
Mitch and his mockup attracted heavy crowds. I was his first interview at 10am; when I walked past at closing time, he was still at it—a security guard had to come over and threaten to throw him out so the show could close.
The AU-EVA1 is (or will be) a 5.7K, Super35mm camcorder with an EF mount recording 10-bit 4:2:2 to SD cards. While codec speeds ‘n’ feeds weren’t being discussed, take a look at what the DC-GH5 and the DVX-200 can do, and you’ll likely have a pretty good idea.
Like its larger VariCam stablemates, the EVA1 will have a dual-native-ISO readout (exact values TBD), V-Log and V-Gamut, and, with a future firmware update, raw output to external recorders. The camera will capture 4K at up to 60P and 2K at up to 240p. The button layout on the side panel is vaguely VariCam-ish, and Mitch says that the menus will likely have a VariCam-like flavor to them, too. One thing not carried over from the VariCam, I’m told, will be the long reboot times!
At $8000 or less, the EVA is aimed at the gap between the VariCam LT and the GH5:
(from Panasonic’s EVA website)
Why 5.7K? The EVA is a Bayer-pattern single-chip camcorder, and like all such beasties the “honest” pixel resolution of the debayered sensor is a fraction of the raw pixel count. If we go by the rule of thumb that a good deBayer yields a final luma resolution of about 80% of the raw pixel count, 5K will give you a proper 4K image. If we’re lucky, some of that extra .7K might be used to provide “lookaround” outside the active image area, so we can see mike booms and light stands before they show up in picture.
The EVA1’s 5.7K sensor
EVA1 side panel
EVA1: LCD can mount on either side at the back of the handle. Or pull the handle off and mount it to one of the top-plate sockets.
EVA1 has dual SD slots, takes DVX-style batteries or 7–12VDC power
Rotating side grip with control dial and function buttons
The units at Cine Gear Expo were weighted mockups, so the heft of the models was close to the 2.65 lb / 1.2 kg weight of the final product.
The cameras will have 2-, 4-, and 6-stop internal ND filters, electrically driven, along with a retractable IR filter on a second filter wheel.
The EVA1 will output 4K over both HDMI and SDI, and will feed both outputs simultaneously. There’s no eye-level EVF; you can fit a third-party loupe to the LCD, or use something like the Gratical if you prefer. Having both HDMI and SDI active means you can sacrifice one for an EVF and still have the other output for an external monitor/recorder or to feed video village.
An EF mount is the standard—and only—lens mount. Sadly, unlike the one on the VariCam LT, it’s a twist-on bayonet style, not the rigid and robust positive-lock version.
EVA1s are scheduled to ship in Fall 2017. More info at Panasonic’s EVA1 webpage.
Sony Next-Gen CineAlta Camera
Sony held a small press briefing hidden deep in the bowels of the Marathon Building before publicly announcing their next-generation CineAlta camera in the Paramount Theater.
Peter Crithary ran though the basics: Sony has has 17 years of experience in the cine world, and the F65 won a Scientific and Engineering Oscar in February. Sony’s Digital Motion Picture Centers exist in Hollywood, Pinewood Studios on the UK, Beijing, and Mumbai; these are places for industry pros to learn about and work with Sony gear, and for Sony to learn from industry folks. Sony also holds focus groups to have industry folks talk directly with design engineers (I’ve had the pleasure of doing this a few years ago), and they’ll take big-name DPs to Japan for intensive discussions—in the case of the current project, Claudio Miranda was involved.
And the current project? A complete, new, from-the-ground-up development of the next-generation CineAlta camera:
Full-frame, 36x24mm sensor. Sony agrees with Panavision that full-frame will be the feature format of the future. And it’s not just those with cameras to sell that say this; I’ve spoken with a number of thoughtful and perceptive DPs who agree that full-frame, a.k.a. large-format, offers greater “dimensionality, roundness, and separation of elements” than S35mm. One DP told me that the larger formats render images more the way we see them, while smaller sensors flatten the space too much.
“Lens agnostic”, implying flexible cropping for S35mm or other formats. When Geoff Boyle said he’s used to calling for a 40mm and knowing what that looks like (on 4-perf 35mm film), Peter nodded and said, “not a problem”.
4K 4×3 anamorphic is a specific target; the sensor will have at least that much resolution. Sony says that they have “very consistent feedback” that 4K 4×3 anamorphic was Something They Need To Do. (I even overheard mutterings—which I didn’t confirm—that “4K 4×3 anamorphic” applies to a S35mm-format crop. Make of that what you will.)
“Much wider latitude than anything we’ve had before”.
Wider color gamut.
All-new design: this isn’t a reworked F65 or F55 or anything else.
And yet: the same familiar workflow: 16-bit raw, X-OCN, XAVC. (Much approval voiced by the crowd at this.)
Sensor is “very far along”.
Existing cameras remain in the lineup. The next-gen camera supplements them, it does not replace them.
Sony is not ready to discuss lens mounts or recording media yet.
Release is planned for “early 2018”. Price TBD. When asked if there would be something to see at IBC in September, Peter said that IBC “may be a target” and there would definitely be more information then.
“Stay tuned.”
So What?
The three different announcements reflect three trends in the cine-camera industry: larger formats, resolution agnosticism, and high dynamic range / wide color gamut imaging.
Larger formats: various larger-than-S35mm sensors, mostly from RED, have been cropping up (pun intended) for several years now.
The RED-sensor-based Panavision Millenium DXL and ARRI Alexa 65 have legitimized the resurgence of large-format more than a bunch of aggro bad-boy biker-gang revolutionaries could (grin), and it doesn’t hurt that we’re now seeing large-format cine glass becoming increasingly available.
That the EVA1 uses a S35mm sensor instead of a four-thirds sensor as the GH5 and DVX-200 do is another indicator: size matters. I know a bunch of folks were disappointed that the EVA1 isn’t a direct follow-on to the AF-100/AF-101 MFT cine camera (hint: look at the GH5 instead), but S35mm was the right choice: while many (myself included) appreciate MFT as a perfect Goldilocks compromise between one-man-band live focusability and cinematic shallow depth of field, we’re in the minority.
Resolution agnosticism: scanning formats matched to broadcast or exhibition resolutions made sense in analog and early digital days, when memory was expensive, high-res sensors were difficult, and resampling framestores cost an arm and a leg. Nowadays there’s increasingly less reason to shoot what you screen, or to capture the same image you record. Shoot more pixels, and you can downsize for sharpness and detail, or have room to zoom in, pan ‘n’ scan, or stabilize the image in post. The EVA1 does this in a small way with its 5.7K sensor for a 4K image, downsampling in camera for higher quality. Sony’s announcement that their full-frame camera will be “lens agnostic” seems a clear indication that it’ll have plenty of pixels to play with, allowing for high-res images even with at least a S35mm crop factor.
HDR / WCG: all these cameras are firmly aimed at a high-dynamic range, wide color gamut future. Of course you’ll be able to capture log images at 10 bits or higher and/or record or output a raw image.
It’s interesting is that all three of these camera announcements were timed to synchronize with Cine Gear Expo, not NAB or IBC. It seems there’s a growing sense that NAB and IBC are too big and diffuse to be the best venue for cine-style gear rollouts; smaller, more focused shows like Cine Gear Expo and CINEC are the places and times to make a big noise in the industry. More power, then, to Cine Gear Expo and CINEC, and all the more reason to attend… or at least to keep an ear to the ground when they’re happening.
Disclosure: There is no material relationship between me and any of the companies mentioned. None of ’em paid me to write about ’em or offered any blandishments to do so.
