the question is who would it be in this scenario. obviously dakota's the one getting the shit beaten out of him. like that's a given. obviously my kneejerk instinct is the one hurting him is william, because i am fucking nothing if not a ghostkicks guy & i think i could swing it as some mal & s9 shit. but i think the better answer here is virion <3 he has enough dirty connections for this to he plausible. he is very good at hurting people. put him in a scenario where he has to feel like he's becoming his dad and he's absolutely overcome by horror and revulsion over how he's doing the exact same thing he watched his father do right neow!! he has his gloves and sleeves down but somehow he brushes against dakota's skin (on purpose because he fucking needs to know what he's doing and needs to feel it like he's punishing himself simultaneously and he's terrified of going too far?) (on accident and he's shaken by it and almost blows the whole thing?) & copies his pain-sense & they're both feeling the same thing & he's shaking but so so good at lying and moving through the pain and he has to be able to take it, if he's giving it. the whole time the memory of watching his father kill his team is running on loop in the back of his mind. he can barely talk for days afterwards. dakota is also fucked up about it but in more of a yeah the point of my whole everything is to be a punching bag for the greater good it's ok :( don't worry about it hey why are you upset about having to hurt me :( it's chill i prommy :( etc!

i know everyone likes to put tharja in the "yandere goth girl" category but tbh i feel like pigeonholing her into one specific archetype does a huge disservice to her character. is she obsessed with curses and robin? yes. is she constantly shoved into a fanservice role by intsys? absolutely.

but i think a lot of people forget just how impactful a lot of her supports are...there's something about tharja that makes nearly everyone who interacts with her divulge their deepest secrets and points of anxiety with her. we see this with libra, who tells her of the abandonment he endured at the hands of his parents. we see it with nowi, whose cheerful demeanor slips off as she tells tharja of her missing parents. and although tharja is not the only one lon'qu confides in regarding ke'ri, their support is notably the only one in which lon'qu divulges that there was romantic involvement between he and his childhood friend.

and despite her antisocial exterior, she always listens mindfully and offers to help! she even goes out of her way to discreetly help the shepherds (getting virion to do odd jobs that benefit civilians, interrogating henry to make sure he bears no ill will towards ylisse, etc).

a big thing about tharja is that she IS kind. she IS considerate. she just also has a reputation to uphold as a dark mage and that (paired with her overall awkwardness ofc) makes her true nature hard to see at first glance

Kinda love the idea of Virion unironically being one of the best suited to raise MC - at least in their younger years. I assume things get a bit messier as the politics do, especially if/when he does become king and his choice of heir becomes a legitimate factor given MC's heritage.

Speaking of, in that AU, how does Virion go about seeking the throne? Is Erlan still poisoned and by the same person (not sure what the spoiler rules are for this blog vs the patreon ^^;) or do things play out differently?

Also given Virion's...machinations in Vinia, is there any chance of MC meeting their extended family in this AU? Or is that bridge more or less burnt with Salyra's death?

I seriously love Virion as a character 😅 It's really a shame he doesn't feature more in the game because he's so fun and villainous that it's hard not to love him.

With heirs, there's no need for bloodlines etc and Virion's ancestors (Erlan and Irus' too) were once rulers from Ishari. Virion doesn't care for the war, he thinks Erlan trying to take control of Ishari because of a broken betrothal is stupid and a waste of resources. So like how he appointed Morden (an Ishari-born man) as the new general of the Blood Guard, he'd likewise name the MC his heir and anyone who disobeys will feel the full might of his displeasure.

Virion would try to get the throne through subterfuge, political scheming and by undermining Erlan's reign. Erlan is not a natural fighter nor is he particularly good at swordsmanship. But Virion is and that's why he has respect in the Blood Guard - he trained alongside them and has made friends with the senior soldiers and recruits so if anything, Virion wouldn't need poison, he'd just stage a coup. It's similar to how he exiled Irus in the main plot. With Erlan dead and a young, inexperienced prince at the helm, Virion convinced the nobles he'd be a better ruler.

The MC would probably learn about their extended family from Virion. He has spies everywhere, but he would have known a lot about Vinia on account of Elora's father's assassination. Once he discovers the MC's family, he'd go back and forth on telling the MC but would eventually tell the MC because despite his machinations for the throne, he does genuinely care about the MC in the AU story.

I think virion is one of awakening’s best characters by far and it’s frustrating how fans of the game have historically treated him. i don’t mean the askers here keep posting about wanting to rail the french out of him or whatever your heart desires i mean how throughout much of awakening fandom he was treated like a horribly repulsive character. he was constantly looked down upon and shittalked and it’s incredibly frustrating trying to look at content of him and stumbling across that all over again because he’s a very fascinating guy if you just dig into him a little bit!

Like a lot of his flirty personality (while some of it is simply just him being genuinely flirtatious) exists for the sake of trying to make connections. He’s a duke who purposely sabotaged his relationship with his people so they would stop trying to die for him because of how loyal they were to him and now he needs new allies. It’s honestly probably entirely why he followed Sully in Ch1 — because he recognized her as a knight of Ylisse & knew if he went after her he’d have an in with the crown. He has countless trysts for the sake of making connections, which he’s successful at. He’s an excellent strategist whose strategies are far too high risk to actually put into practice and he’s aware of it. He should have been a bigger part of the Valm arc. He’s the fatherest of fathers. He sold off a family heirloom, one of the last things he had left of House Virion, to buy medicine for an old couple for Libra. Etc. Virion probably isn’t even his name because of how Cherche introduces him as “Duke Virion,” like it’s his house name instead.

He’s just such a good character and honestly one of Awakening’s best-written when you dig into him a little bit and I wish people talked about him generally more favorably

3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?

OUGHH REALLY HARD QUESTION. gaghh. i think my two favourites are brutal and my which prime defender are you quiz!!! brutal was just so fun to write i love when winters family torment nexus!!!! and the quiz because i knew exactly what the reception to it would be (oh silly fun quiz!! yay--oh. Oh No) and i was very correct and it was very fun to see people cursing my name in the feedback question. the quiz was definitely the funnest one to put together!!!! i should do more experimental stuff like that :3 very fun

27. What do you listen to while writing?

GOD i have like five million playlists i cycle through depending on my mood. i have like a playlist of party/sex/etc. songs, another simply called ⚔️BADASS SHIT⚔️ (yes sword emojis included) that i named years ago and don't have the heart to change the name of, one with songs that provide me with serotonin, etc. however i think my favourite playlist is gay fuck jazz (name courtesy of my brother who once described will wood's music as gay fuck jazz and it hasn't left my brain since) gay fuck jazz is usually my default!!!

URGHGHGH. I DONT KNOW. THERE R SO MANY GOOD ONES. hmmm lemme think. ohhgh this one from shotgun <3 w vyncent cleaning off the. shotgun

"The shotgun is easier to clean off. Vyncent scrubs the butt of it with a handful of wipes, and they come away dark red, leaving the shotgun sparkling clean.

He lifts it from between his legs and holds it across his lap, just looking at the thing. A shotgun is different from an axe or even a chainsaw. It’s a lot more... removed. Distant. He’s never liked guns all that much. He doesn’t know how Ram uses them.

Hesitantly, he turns it over, and with hands that do not shake, shut up Jason, get back from the front you shouldn’t be here fuck off!!! he lifts it and places his hands where William’s would rest. Will’s left handed, so it feels kind of weird, but Vyncent’s been trained to fight with either hand, so although it’s different he can more or less comfortably hold the shotgun the way Will would, placing his palms over the places he’s seen Will hold it by, curling one finger around the trigger, the other hand gripping the fore-end. He wedges the butt into his shoulder, lifting the stock to rest against his cheek. He looks down the barrel, where it’s pointed at one of the windows.

He shouldn’t load it, shouldn’t cock it, shouldn’t even rest his finger on the fucking trigger, because if he misfires this thing a bullet could rocket out of the Winnebago and hit some poor old lady driving in her Prius, or a random animal on the side of the road, and he doesn’t want to see a splatter of blood on the highway.

I can't believe a writer would write a long response XXXD. I like how Robin's exhaustion caused the journal to be read while the *reason* for her exhaustion exonerated her in the first place (leading to the Extreme Measures). Hadn't put that cause and effect together yet, but that's so neat!

In your other response you mentioned not starting out with the political direction. Would you mind sharing how you saw it ending before starting?

Yes! You're spot on with that. Much as I wanted Robin to get to have her gotcha moment with Lady Idris, I didn't want the main takeaway to be, like, "it is good that she overworked herself in this extreme way and there are no major or lasting consequences". While that intensive over-working / planning and need for control may have served her well in the short term, it majorly comes back to bite her later on :') I'm glad you feel like it ties together nicely!

Honestly the initial plan was quite different, in part because I went into it just sort of following the fake dating whim for fun, and thinking I'd write a few scenes and see where it took me (rookie mistake). I wasn't actually intending to launch straight into an entire new long fic at all.

The original vision was actually that Chrom and Robin would be planning to stage a public argument on the night of the ball to call things off. But then, while they were *at* the ball, Virion was going to approach them about arranging for a diplomatic mission regarding some of the stuff going on in Valm (I was gonna mess with the peace-time timeline a bit to make this work). Chrom would have asked Robin if they could keep the ruse going a little longer, since as his tactician, she needed to come on the trip anyway, and keeping the act up would help fend off potential foreign suitors Virion might try and push his way.

She would have agreed and they'd have gone on the trip and gotten swept up in faking being together while on what was a very luxuriant / romantically designed couple's vacation (when they weren't actively working). In terms of how their feelings were going to eventually come out, it was going to be a situation where towards the end of the trip when they were both sad about the pretending coming to a close, they both wind up drinking a little too much at dinner one night. That would have led to them getting carried away with faking affection and hooking up in some capacity, then they both would have woken up feeling so guilty for it that all their real emotions finally just came pouring out fgjdf.

Personally, I very much prefer the direction I actually wound up taking the story. But that alternative would have been a heck of lot less work as far as coming up with an original intrigue plot-line and all the logistics tied in with that. Frankly, I wasn't even sure I *had* the skill-set for pulling off the intrigue stuff, as my experience writing coherent original plot-lines was pretty much nonexistent at that point. Glad I bit the bullet though!

I REALLY REALLY LIKE virion here especially..... like yeah that's pretty much exactly what i was picturing for him..... fucking. scruffy turtleneck pretty much all skin besides his face is covered.... yeah! yeah yeah yeah. he also looks older than the other two which is perfect 2 me because he is! and he's got the extra like. however long he was surviving on his own so that might make him look older than he actually is. augh. no jrpg hair :( but I do really really like his messy updo patchy dye job hair. hehe

BIG fan of the note that william is wearing one of their hoodies and also the note about a bazillion pairs of cargo pants. you KNOW none of them know whose clothes are whose anymore. besides sizes ofc. dakota goes to put on one pair of pants and they're just spilling over his feet bc theyre too long like "oops v these are yours" and vice versa virion ending up with fuckign. cargo pants capris. william grabs what he thought was one of his hoodies but is actually one of the new ones virion got with prt money and goes "oh wait this one is so much softer. mine now" and cuts thumb holes in the sleeves to claim it as his . they don't even acknowledge sharing clothes anymore it's just like a fact of life that they're all interchangeable.... aughaghh. new haven wards see themselves as a single being. you are part of me I'm part of you we cannot be separated in a way that matters

Virion Sol:

Species: 

Voltil. Votils are titled that for their volatility. 

They have a gene that reacts to Shift (the energy the core of the planet Fauna emits) during the Incubation period and has incredibly unpredictable results. It has messed with the evolution of all creatures on the planet giving them a crazy amount of diversity for a species with an incredibly similar genetic make-up.

This gene is called the Shifting-Gene. The Shifting-Gene will develop a survival ability at seemingly random which will present itself after the Votil is born. Some are born with the ability to control energy like magic. Some are born with superior strength. Some are born as shape-shifters. 

Some traits are more common such as superior:

Strength

Intelligence

Wisdom

Charisma

Dexterity

Constitution

(most common) Phenotype: 

bi-peds but with Four fingers/toes on each hand/foot. 

Have only pointed/sharp teeth to rip into flesh, and a throat that expands and collapses to swallow meat whole

They also, however, have incredibly strong tongues, and a very rough roof of the mouth that they can use to mash plants (they just usually don’t)

Very Sharp/pointed ears

Very short white fur (think cow) in various colors. They can choose how much fur grows, and where, and most just choose for it to grow on their heads (not all, however). It’s a cultural thing to dye all or some fur in the color of their clan/village. Pelts of opposing clans are often used to decorate boarders, and walls.

Planet: Fauna. Fauna is a planet with a noxious gas core and land masses caught in it’s gravitational pull float above haphazardly. They don't orbit correctly due to the fluctuating energy at the center of their planet called Shift, so they are constantly smashing into eachother and causing massive earth quakes. Lots of dangerous flying animals have evolved on Fuana. 

Culture: 

Socially :fauna is a weirdly contradictory planet socially. Due to their incredible diversity Voltils are very very very open minded and accepting of anyone born into their own village or town. However on the other hand, due to the constant shifting of land they are incredibly territorial and vicious to anyone not born in their village or town.

Food: Additionally Voltils tend to be Facultative Carnivores. Though they can eat plants, they chose to eat other creatures both as an intimidation tactic to intruders in their territory, and also because animal food is more available.

Voltils are also often commonly cannibals. Not all of them, but this belief of intimidation through eating has definitely instilled a culture of eating those who intrude rather than wasting their bodies in many sky villages. 

Outside view: Space is Very afraid of Voltils. Maybe slightly less afraid of them than humans, purely because they know more about Voltils than humans, and the unknown is scary. Voltils are deathworlders too, so yeah, scary dog privilege all the way.
