it’s kinda funny to me that charles seems like this classic brit punk rocker and looking at him makes you think of like. the clash. sex pistols. etc. but really according to his pins and the time period he died in he was probably most frequently listening to fucking. ska
#im sorry I know it’s legitimate genre with a legitimate history and the intermingling of cultures to make it exist is kind of beautiful#but#also#I mean#it’s ska#rambling#charles rowland: ska enjoyer#I think him having edwin listen to ska would end up with him like. charles i love you but what in god’s name are you making me listen to#the trumpets would be too much for him#not in a ‘would kill a victorian child’ kind of way but in a ‘this guy probably only ever heard classical music via quiet low quality#phonographs up until charles rowland happened and now we’re jumping directly from that to SKA’#edwin encountering new music genres and subgenres and instruments and devices is a very fun concept to play with#I think where his and charles’ tastes would align most would be the cure and gay new wave shit like depeche mode and soft cell#I got off track. anyway#charles rowland. ska enjoyer#charles#dead boy detectives

one thing about alt stuff is that the barrier to entry to being "goth" is truely so fucking low and yet people constantly limbo under the bar instead of stepping over it and wonder why they get called posers. like we're not asking you to move mountains here we're just asking you to find even one band under the umbrella that you like and to engage with the community a little bit. The fashion has truely so much overlap between goth punk and emo so very few people will care which one you call yourself based on your look and you just have to find a band you like. Dashboard Confessional screams a bit too much for your taste and Dead Kennedys is too loud? Guess what you're in luck the goths listen to something a little softer and weirder they call it dark wave or ethereal wave depending on the phases of the moon. Try out Clan of Xymox or Switchblade Symphony. Like truly the alt music scene is so fucking diverse there's gotta be something in here that you like. If not and you truly are a pop girlie then don't call yourself punk it's very easy.
#listen don't at me I do think that dark wave ethereal wave and new wave are all basically the same music genre#but I also don't think that emo isn't even a real music genre because it's all either punk pop punk or screamo#I don't like labels when they become entirely too niche to be helpful xoxo#the only music genres to me: Punk Metal Wave Industrial Electronica Pop Punk Screamo Grunge and Goth#and then the other ones which are rock hiphop folk country pop jazz soul blues R&B ska and classical but those r less relevant here#don't make it more complicated than that it doesn't need to be#this is not contradictory with the scene being diverse btw Mitski and Kesha are both considered pop yet their music is distinct#so too two punk bands are allowed to sound different and both be punk without a whole new genre getting made up

the more cecil talks about dogs, the more convinced i am that hes never seen a real dog before and aubergine is just an empty water bottle with a leash
#space.txt#wtnv#wtnv spoilers#cc#there have been so many dogs in this show and i dont think a single one was a real dog#and i know he said he was a dog person like a decade ago but#he probably thought it was some genre of music like ska#idk i just like the idea of cecil calling everything he doesnt know a dog. except a real dog which he has never seen#welcome to night vale

also 1. the youtube goths say all u need to be a goth is to know the music and 2. i would LOVE a list
OK OK BET (note in the middle of writing the list: i am Sat Up in my bed so locked in rn)
so like, first the classics duh:
i love love love the cure like that's an obvious one but rrrrr they are so good these are like my favs. i saw them in concert like a year ago w my dad and we fucking missed boys dont cry bc it was like. the last encore song and it was midnight and we wanted to get merch and run like the wind yknow (top two hoodies i own tho so i think worth it)
siouxsie and the banshees?? fun fact if you've seen the show hannibal she did the last song and said she interpreted as a love story so 😌 somehow i dont have a siouxsie playlist oh well
depeche mode i also don't listen to a whole lot but the bangers are fr bangers. could listen to ghosts again on repeat forever probably
bauhaus!! bela legosi's dead is such a song of my childhood tbh maybe that explains some things
cocteau twins.. ok gonna be honest i know maybe Two songs lmao but i know they're kinda important so still putting them here. i feel like my dad called them pretentious once and that was all i needed to hear rip (small slight con of having a dad who literally showed me everything to do with music is that his opinion of music is still very influential to me. but like he's also usually right so)
not a band, but the rolling stone had an article of the top 50 goth songs (idr if it was *ever* bc that's kinda crazy but whatev) and mcr was on it? for baby bats they said but i was still kinda surprised. and then i thought about it and like.. lowkey yeah. if emo is "the world is dark and horrible and everything sucks" and goth is "the world sucks but there's beauty in the shadows" i feel like mcr is smack dab in the middle. anyway i made the list into a playlist and added ones i thought were missing
ok!! these ones are newer:
varsovia is so fucking good omggg. found them bc one of their songs was the theme song for this AMAZING hbo show called los espookys ive prolly mentioned that lmao. theres a bunch of spanish (i say spanish and not latino just bc i don't actually know some of them might be spaniards lol) goth bands (including the next one) and made a playlist bc like. duh
twin tribes is another band that i kinda only know two songs by but like that's ok!! they are rlly good
ok so i found vision video on instagram randomly and didn't even listen to the music at first bc i didn't realize they were a band?? mostly it's just the lead singer posting and he has the persona of "goth dad" and is an emt and just generally a really cool guy (amazing makeup also). but have come to v much enjoy their music and if i ever see them live i will combust
#there are soo many other bands that i feel like are at least goth adjacent#theres a lot of overlap between goth punk ska etc which i find SOO interesting#like lowkey dream project would be make a video essay on all the history and differences/similarities and stuff#and then like.. shoegaze too?? which i think might be a newer genre but idrk#ask#sunsetstarving#pen and ink#music stuff

I just found out that the majority of the music I used to listen to back in my "emo phase" was actually nu-metal. I don't know what to do with this information
#like i mean. i always knew it wasnt 'real' emo music#i had friends who listened to 'real' emo music and tried to get me into their bands and i just didnt like them as much#i definitely was emo in like outlook and stuff but i was just into harder stuff music-wise#i always thought of the music i listened to as alternative rock or hard rock tho. which like. it still IS#but apparently more specifically its nu-metal. like. pretty much every formative band that i listened to at the time#im having an identity crisis now smh. was i actually... a baby metalhead?#i didnt even get into any emo music until AFTER my 'emo phase' ended 😔 im a fraud#rambling#disclaimer: i am aware that the subcultures are more than just their music lol#im the one that has that nearly 100k subculture praxis alignment chart going around rn with the funny ska addition on it#ive just been learning more about which bands are technically what (sub)genre recently and this discovery was funny to me#(apologies to any Actual metalheads i may have offended#by jokingly referring to myself as a metalhead for accidentally listening to nu-metal bands during my emo phase)#(...and to any Actual emos i may have offended by accidentally listening to nu-metal bands during my 'emo' phase)#(go ahead and laugh me out of the mall/skate park 😔 i deserve it)

i love defending pete wentz against the mania haters who call him the music industry's mr krabs bc he sucks in other ways.
#if you seriously think mania as an album was trend chasing then you must love being wrong.#it performed well commercially and all but it also like. bombed critically and with fans enough that#it's like almost a cult classic now lol.#'oh but it's not that old' 'oh but it debuted number one' and barberella was a hit in england. psychic blast.#dubstep was already on its way out of the mainstream as a trend by the time 'young and menace' dropped.#plus calling the reggae/reggaeton influence trend chasing is just incorrect. please listen to black cards.#p2 both are reggae/ska fans and them (especially pete as a bipoc of jamaican descent) taking influence from it isn't any more#trend chasing than them taking influence from rnb or modern pop. also most ppl hating on the genre experimentation here#were just being racist about it. looking at melon tnd for calling it 'white boy reggae.' i'd say he was probably just being ignorant#but also burna boy is right fucking there. directly contributing to the song in question. so that was just racist.#like there are genuine digs i COULD see ppl making about mania's. like. production. but it decidedly wasn't a sellout moment#if fob has one. i'm a pretty firm believer in them having been soldout since they formed but that's me#bc i believe 'selling out' really doesn't have to be a bad thing.#they formed fob to be more 'approachable' and 'softer' than the hardcore scene. and that does mean to the mainstream music world.#which is the definition. SUPPOSEDLY. of selling out: trying to be more popular all of a sudden. making more radio#friendly music all of a sudden. which fob has always done pretty much lbr.#i wouldn't call all (a lot even) of their songs radio pop or radio friendly but like.#did ya'll forget it's called pop punk or.#pete wentz#fall out boy#ALSO. people putting the sole blame on pete bc he 'controls' their image/presence.... there are other guys in the band.#btw. like yes it's his baby but it's theirs too.#it's so funny how ppl love to act like he contributes nothing to fob musically but then when it's time to critique their#genre experimentation the blame tends to fall solely upon pete.#i wonder why that is! /sarcastic.#ppl love to both delegitimize him and villainize him at the same time and it's like. so funny.#bc on one hand there is truth to him sucking and being evil but most ppl go about it all the wrong ways.#he's not even mr krabs he's like. plankton. MAYBE.

it's always kinda funny when you *almost* share a music taste with someone. we like the same bands but all your favorite songs by them are the ones i can't stand. same genres but every artist you like in them is juuuust grating enough for me to be unable to stand them. on paper we're perfectly compatible. in practice if you put us in a car together one of us won't make it out alive
#the only ww song my husband likes is the exact one i skip in full listens of the normal album#the only shayfer j (. trying to stay out of search results) song i like is one he isn't interested in#on paper we like the same genres but he likes repetitive or more lo-fi oriented ones and I'm more of a rock or ska guy.#same with my fwb except he's more of an electronic hyperpop guy where I'm more jazzy hehe.#(so we both like rock/indie stuff but never the same artists or songs. damn)

Did you know Samo has a big brother?? It's true! He picks them up after class sometimes. Of course, Hikari insists that everything he says sounds ""incredibly threatening,"" but he really is just a wonderful big bro!!
#i escaped my genre#alt-text#image description#image descriptions#junji ito#my art#isekai#creepy#he has the same resting scary face disease as Tatsu The Immortal Dragon from Way of the House Husband#but he's never actually seen doing anything harmful to anyone. I also kind of like the idea of Samo's teacher having a crush on him.#maybe hikari too idk.#the hair is because I just saw the Junji Ito Maniac episode 'long hair in the attic' and turns out hair horror looks cool#i don't have a design for Samo's teacher and gods willing i won't take on another project right now#for those who haven't read a lot of junji Ito - often in his stories there's some character who is ostensibly fully human but#just has an incredibly creepy aura. and in his stories this always leads to the reveal that the person is in fact supernatural and/or evil#and i thought it would be funny to have a character who is that level of offputting and who talks like a serial killer... who it turns out#is just a nice guy. just a guy who loves his family and works hard being a salary man! he walks the dog in the mornings and he loves ska!#and if i ever feel like drawing a character with sentient haunted hair then he's here for me#simon stevenson#samo Stevenson#hikari hikizuri#he's fairly tall but Samo is still like two feet taller than him#he has regular human proportions#he and Samo have a very sweet and healthy relationship.#might be fun to have everyone around them be like 'OMG ARE YOU TWINS?? You looks so alike!' while Hikari is like 99% sure that's a vampire

also we've reached the point of post-eurovision depression where i'm having esc dreams; last night i dreamt it was the grand final and luke black had decided to change things up after the semi, so he had a more upbeat version of samo mi se spava that i can only describe as a ska (ska-punk? two-tone? idk i had to go on wikipedia to figure this out) remix. an odd creative choice but it seemed to work for the audience so idk, maybe ska is gonna be the next big thing at esc.
#anyway i was an absolute mary sue in this dream it was great#luke needed another dancer last minute so i had to volunteer bcos i was already backstage bcos i was. also competing.#it did occur to me that both changing the track and having me on were probably very much against the rules but i had fun#and no i don't know anything about ska. of all the genres my brain could come up with i s2g i barely know what ska is.#but that's the closest thing i can figure to what it sounded like so there ya have it

I was just about to mention that The Smiths bassist Andy Rourke passed away on the weekend, and I saw your post that Louis updated before that 😱 I was a Smiths fan back in the 80s and it's lovely to see that Louis loves the same music I grew up with 🤧
And to that anon that asked about the playlist, whether it's only a Spotify thing, unfortunately it is, not on apple 😑
Yeah he's added The Smiths and worn related stuffs over the years but it's nice to see its still current and more and more are getting added. Theres quite some additions that have been personal favorites forever or hit me in some other way (also right in the nostalgia). And thank you for the update on apple.
#+ slightly afraid like a lot is what i love... but its leaning even more towards my partners music taste#like too much. like fucking the specials and madness... i can handle madness but if theres one genre i reject (and basically the only one)#The One Genre that im a bitch about.. and thats my partners fav.. and it must have something to do with that.. being constantly exposed#to Not My Vibe.. it's ska.#and ive not seen a hint of ska love in his .. realm . yet. up until now. this is getting pretty ska-y. im afraid. hes gonna go there sdklaj#but the ska or skaleaning songs on there i do lke so were still safeish sdklfjslkdslkfj

I wonder how many ska haters online even actually know anything about ska at all or have ever properly listened to it instead of just developing opinions based solely on other people's internet jokes tbh. You should be required to listen to something from The Specials or something before posting a ska joke
#this isnt anti ska jokes many are very funny. i just think they may be reaching an audience for whom they are the sole source on the subject#i also don't mean by this that everyone in the world would like ska if they heard it.#but the number of people who claim it as the worst genre or something is crazy to me. it's so harmless and fun
