@scopophobia-polaris asked for some more details on this silly guy and I needed to post the redesign of his scars so I'm gonna ramble!

General "rules" I am using for the Bad Moon AU:

-You cannot change the future. If you saw the future, it happens. Maybe not to you, but it happens. Time travel either involves splitting timelines, temporal loops (see the song of storms), or two extremely similar timelines that collapse together (a dumb child goes to the past to plant beans). What does this mean for Termina? OH GOD OH GOD WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TINY WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!

-If you turn into something, you will never entirely turn back.

-Two opposing wishes on the Tri Force will really fuck things up. Also, it happened. Bad Moon is about dealing with the fallout.

Tiny has a series of magic scars from his various transformations. Most of them are benign or beneficial due to Farore's blessing and the Fierce Deity's Mask's intervention, but not all. Believe it or not, this is me nerfing him, because I'm getting rid of all the Terminian masks except for the FD's mask, which gets broken.

-From the Deku mask he has ivy vines. Most are centered along his spine. He uses them to hold stuff. If he sleeps in fertile soil they will grow into the ground and he leaves weird plants that are sort of beholden to him all over the place. Gross. Anyways, remember how the Hero's Shade is covered in ivy? The "missing" eye is also more or less a Deku scrub's pitlike eye now, granting him low-light but otherwise mediocre vision in that eye.

-From the Goron mask he is disturbingly strong now. Most of Farore's blessed are pretty strong to begin with and now he's got Darmani's strength on top of that. His teeth are continuously growing and need to be worn down by grinding them on each other (because he's missing a tooth from that facial scar those teeth are maloccluded and grow all weird). It's definitely inspired by wrathful deity artwork though. He's also extremely resistant to heat. He got the white hair and scales on his shoulders/knees/elbows from Darmani too. Guess what part of his magic scarring the Hero of Twilight inherits!

-From the Zora mask he has some extremely strong scales on his forearms that can be used to defend himself. He can also make nasty electrical shocks, is very resistant to electrocution, is an extremely good swimmer (nowhere near as good as Mikau though), and can hold his breath for twenty minutes easily. His toes are webbed too.

-From the Giant's mask his height just kinda varies. His "true" height is over seven feet tall but it can vary between about 6"/15cm in either direction. He has some control over this but it's more related to his sense of security. He's at his smallest when he's the most insecure but like, that's still 6'10"/208 cm so he's still way too big. Lucky for him the magic also affects his clothes/armor but it takes some time so he just makes/buys things on the larger end and waits for them to shrink to his current size. The effect goes away when removed from his body. Is this so I don't have to be consistent? Yes.

-He turns into a puppy in the War of Eras when he's ten and Zant uses the twilight as a weapon. Specifically an epicyon puppy! A 100lb/45kg puppy! Medli will ride him! I just want to draw the biggest puppy in the world. He can still turn into the big ancient wolf, and thankfully it doesn't do too much to him (unlike Twilink) but his jaw attaches waaay further back than it ought to and he can open his mouth to a scary degree. It's probably influencing those big fangs too. Combined with the Goron bite strength and... yeah.

I'll probably change things because I'm just playing around with him, so don't be surprised when I do!

Bo definitely sells the ‘undead’ vibes for me!! the face-hands are a bit weird but nobody ever acknowledges them as hands so it doesn’t matter lol. Her vampire design is great, but even in her princess form she’s really good!! I like her big ol eyes especially, they’re fun to draw! More people need to talk about princess era Bo imo

Shrimp goes without saying, she’s so cute!! There’s a reason she (and Erica) take up like 70% of Failtopia fanart, she’s iconic!! Even though her mouth can be intimidating, the rest of her design is very cute!! she looks good in almost any outfit you put her in too!! :]

CHI’S TIMESKIP DESIGN IS PEAK!! yea the six pack is a bit dumb but she looks weird without it, plus just. the chin in general is just something else /pos. there’s so many things Dan did with her design in S2 that he didn’t need to do. Her having an ahoge gives me life. Her finale outfit especially is very silly and it makes me happy :D

Erica (in both seasons) may look like a default Mii with some slight changes, but those changes MATTER DAMMIT!! Her worried eyebrows in S1 show frustration, but it’s a different type of frustration than she had in 2. As she goes through her arcs, the change in appearance is vital. some people complain about her overratedness, seeing her as just an attractive woman people have a crush on (looking at you, people that vandalized the wiki!) but at the end of the day can you blame them? I say this as someone who’s arospec lol

Bonus thing for Erica: If you rewatch her intro cutscene, you’ll see that the reason she has a bandage on her forehead is because she burst a vein while being on Party Babysitting Duty. the attention to detail is insane I stg

Some disclaimers (as previously stated.) I started this ask account originally when I was about 16 and drew a LOT for it in 2019-2020 specifically. Because of this, there are some things that are either silly or may come across incorrectly. Here are sum clearer-ups: (Only specifying because I used to get dumb questions on DA a lot from people who ignore the possibility of context) -I don't ship william afton x mangle/mangle's "kid/dog soul". I ship springtrap (the furry animatronic) with Mangle (the furry animatronic). No soul business involved in that context. Theyre just two angsty furries thats it. think tony crynight. -I USED to ship Vanny x William Afton. I started this account before security breach came out and revealed the two to be father and daughter and I didn't think it was possible bc William was a dead corpse for longer than however old vanessa looked. My version of vanny (like everyone elses at the time) was nothing at all like canon vanny anyway, so I consider her more of an OC than of the character Vanessa. I'll likely try to bring back the "Vanny oc" character, her current changed name is Penny until I decide what else to do with her. Any asks to Vanny/Vanessa will go to the canon version of her -I had a whole ask arc about characters wearing "femboy clothing". and have had drawn responses implying suggestive/sexual things. It was always just a joke to me but I think the lengths I went were a little uncomfortable for me to be drawing as a teen and posting to a large audience. I want my content to be appropriate for anyone to enjoy so consider that type of humor incredibly toned down now. All of the characters are physically asexual bc they are robots made for kids.

I'm doing a deep-read of the Japanese original print (reread) and Overhaul 1.0 (first read) side-by-side, and writing down everything I notice from small details, version differences, translation differences, etc. (and being gay about the characters <3 always important)

The second page has an error - 悪夢 was probably misread as 悪魔 ("happen" and "awaken" are also the same kanji). It should be "Then, the nightmare occurred." It's really cool that this still works really well considering...y'know (not saying for the first-time readers ;) )

I just love how that drawing of Vash is so cool and serious...

...and then you turn the page and he's in the most pathetic cunty pussy-out pose you've ever seen. Easily one of my favorite panels. Also made a math question for funsies. sorry to anyone who got high school flashbacks, but I absolutely loved trigonometry lmao. I could do this forever.

A little pun(?) that may or may not be intentional - In Japanese, someone with a bounty on their head is called 賞金首, lit. "bounty neck" ("neck" sometimes signifies the entire head). The locals call out for the bounty-neck right as Vash hurt his neck lol

I love how creepy Vash moves sometimes. absolute cryptid

This is entirely a Japanese-only detail, but I really loved how Vash said バヤイ (bayai) in the sobbing in French line, because my mom also says that instead of 場合 (baai) when she's being silly lmao. Also, it's notable that in Japanese, Vash says フランセ語 ("Francé-go," where "go" is the suffix for languages) which may be either another miles->iles/double-dollar situation, or just him speaking silly like バヤイ.

Also, the line after that would more accurately be "How am I supposed to deal with all these locals?"

Here, the "Really?" is actually Meryl saying something like "I'll give you a hint."

Meryl tends to be the one responsible for the braincell in fanworks but it's important to remember that she absolutely is dumb too (affectionate).

I'm so glad I wrote that reminder about Meryl's speech, but I don't think I'll be able to do it justice here when I have so much more to talk about. I'll have to write another post later, so I'll link it when it's done. The gist is that she talks like a stereotypical high-class anime girl, and the trope is from how a similar demographic in Meiji-era Japan actually spoke.

The text on the board here was very messy and squished, but it says something like "Vash the Stampede Absolute Capture Task Force Headquarters." Honestly don't know how to fit all that into the board though so uh good luck on that for 2.0... Also dear god Vash has so much energy... He's just been running for 3 hours straight...!!

Fun fact: the equivalent idiom to "fight fire with fire" in Japanese is "use poison on poison."

Translation error for Milly and the chairman - Milly is saying "Why do things keep getting worse and worse!?" and the chairman is mumbling "What's the deal with you two..."

The "Freeze!" is actually untranslated, just re-typed to match the surrounding font. Also, that panel is the first time Vash's antennae is shown bent!! It goes back up immediately after that though.

Fun fact #2. Vash says ara ara. if you even care.

This line never fails to hit me hard. They're all desperate mothers and sisters, and they're taking on the bad role because nothing's more important than their dear children. (reminds me of a certain someone...)

I've seen someone mention this before, but Trimax definitely adjusted the number of plants. Fifty!?!? Also, in Japanese, "plants" and "died" were in quotations.

I love the gun pull in the right panel. Vash obviously definitely doesn't intend on shooting, but is rather showing off his skill and resolve as an intimidation tactic to throw the girls off-guard.

God this entire spread is just so RAW.... (here's the post that's mentioned in blue. it just reminded me)

Some more hypes and sillies. The impact that "KISS MY ASS!!" had on my first read was phenomenal!! It's so silly!! and cool!!!

And then there's this!! Another favorite part of mine. Vash's antennae are bent again! They kind of alternate between straight and bent from here.

The green writing about the onomatopoea are more of just a translation note rather than a suggestion. I can't think of any good beckoning noises in English :V

And finally, Milly calls "Mr. Bomb" "Bomb-kun" in Japanese which I think yall would enjoy lol. And happy strangling her saturday tuesday.

I really love to heal my own parent issues by imagining the relationship between Borusa and a young Ushas. Here are some headcanons:

>Borusa isn’t stupid when it comes to kids and how they see adults and what they need from them. He’s one of the few Academy Tutors and Advisors to not mention Ushas’ Parents after they died. Instead, he helps her with class work she’s missed, talks about what silly things the grownups have done in the Panopticon. He’s a distraction and Ushas is relieved to not have to talk about the uncomfortable stuff for once. He doesn’t need to hear how she feels, he knows already that she is devastated and lost. He can feel it telepathically from her and although it hurts him to see a student so broken a hurt he continues to work with her.

>Ushas going to his office sometimes after having a meltdown or getting memories of her parents triggered and sitting with her knees curled to her chest or with a blanket. Borusa doesn’t force an answer or explanation he just offers her water, tea,or a snack and continues grading his graduate level class assignments. He brings out paper for her to draw her dinosaurs or scribble her anger out.

>Ushas sometimes talks to him and Borusa listens patiently and is very upfront about his inability to exactly empathize with her situation as his parents were never close with him at all. Ushas in a way feels listened to abd feels validated. Her situation is unique and she’s tired of therapists and teachers claiming to understand her complex emotions. How can they when they haven’t lived through it?

>When Ushas gets older and begins to cause trouble like all of the Deca she often breaks and admits to the prank at the mere mention from a disciplinary officer of telling Borusa of her actions. He’s the one person not in the science department who she respects.

>Even as a young adult she likes to sit in his office and ask about what is going on with all of the Cardinals and their drama. Borusa shares only stories from non teachers for obvious reasons. It’s very relaxing and helps her anxiety to hear about the stupid Timelords and their dumb bills.

>Ushas gets very mad when she has to share Borusa with Jelpax. She usually grumbles and leaves early “He’s in my chair!”

Okay now a sad one

>when Ushas is held trial for her crimes and the verdict of “exile” is read for the first time Borusa who of course is present to watch, audibly gasps and holds his head in his hands. As she is formally exiled off the planet, like an exile the high council stands in formal attire to watch. Before she is transported off the system, they turn to face away from her. Borusa is the last to do so. The expression of pure pain and, for the first time anyone has ever seen since the Morbius era, tears falling down his face publicly before turning away is the face that haunts the Rani for the rest of her lives. It is that day Borusa takes an extended leave of absence for the first time in his career as the mere sight of her in her student uniform in his index of former students was enough to make him weep in his office.

Top Albums Of 2024: #7 - 'Short n' Sweet' by Sabrina Carpenter

Following her rebirth on 2022’s slow burning success Emails I Can’t Send, Sabrina’s commercial juggernaut takes a more direct approach, hanging onto that album’s combination of witty pop bangers and country ballads but making everything that much tighter, sharpening the hooks and ramping up the sex comedy. From the opening chords of 9 week #1 hit "Taste" it feels instantly glossy, taking on a mid 80s pop rock vibe that that seems engineered to reach across the generations with its sweet but steely melodies and anthemic chorus. The ubiquitous post disco funk of "Espresso" is just as irrepressible, full of dumb, sticky catchphrases and charismatic winks to the camera. It’s hard to overstate how easy Short N Sweet is to listen to - each song seems engineered to be the catchiest of earworms - but underlying that is a high degree of songcraft which makes it a satisfying and substantial piece of work in its own right too.

For something so obviously ultra-commercial, the character Sabrina holds across the album is surprisingly multifaceted. In some senses she draws on old-school sexual stereotypes - the iconography of the era feels almost forces sweetheart-like, taking in 50s bathing costumes and lipstick kisses - but while Sabrina’s lyrical approach (sample line from "Bed Chem" - “come right on me - I mean camaraderie!”) could seem like a modern version of that kind of sexualised role, her characterisation of men throughout the album - as idiots and scumbags, generally incapable of finding their ass if it had a bell on it - makes for a far less passive perspective, more that of someone on a haphazard and often lonely quest for satisfaction. 

The ballads in particular take a vicious line on the guys, especially on the charmingly silly country vignette "Slim Pickins" and, rather more pointedly, on "Dumb and Poetic". Here, Sabrina takes an unusually serious approach to skewering her target, a man who uses a sensitive side to excuse his failure to sustain relationships: lines like “try to come off like yr soft and well spoken/ jack off to lyrics by Leonard Cohen” are delivered with a savagery out of character with her largely tongue in cheek default. Tho it’s perhaps the only song where Sabrina so explicitly bares her teeth, it’s an undercurrent that’s present throughout and one wonders if she might have missed her calling as a more full throatedly confessional singer songwriter. For now tho, she’s simply the biggest new pop star of 2024: it’s a dirty job but somebody’s got to do it.

another oc group uhh they all have elemental powers. ❄️ has ice powers and antlers/horns/whatever on his head made of ice that change by category of emotions. 🍒 bends juice like one would bend water and she's kinda insecure about it bc she thinks it's dumb. they escaped a kingdom in backstory and now they're hanging around wherever, which happens to also be where 💎🪨 resides. 💎🪨 is very similar to licorice cookie, master frown, sir pentious, dr doofenshmirtz, that sort of pathetic villain. in fact i solely made him bc i loved the trope(?) lol. im also considering adding more to it? 💎🌸 acts sweet but is more of a risk, for instance. very judgemental of 💎🪨 ofc.

uhhhh malori has a whole story arc ish thing with her. i even have two designs to represent the two different eras of her life. she starts off as a bully alongside 🦎, 🥃, and 🪶, but at some point falls on love with jasmine. she eventually tries to befriend her and also she's stuck between her reputation and her love and idk other stuff happens im still working on it tbh. tho i am considering having jasmine's younger brother play a role in the whole redemption thing,, i might change my mind but she did used to bully him probably. before she ever even laid eyes on jaz. and also i might put him into a coma for reasons and also oc-havers just kinda do that lol teehee

There are few things quite as useless to art discussions (casually or academically) as blanket statements of quality.

"Art films are all boring!"

"Classic novels are all boring!"

"Hollywood movies are all the same!"

"Comic books are all silly!"

"Movies from *insert random country here* all look cheap!"

"I just think that all that music sounds the same!"

"Westerns are all the same!"

"Musicals are dumb!"

And on, and on, and ON!!!

These kinds of statements are useless for numerous reasons.

Firstly, there's an in-baked hypocrisy because (no hyperbole) every single person I've ever heard make this kind of unhelpful blanket statements has some thing quite precious to them that other people would accuse of being all the same but if you ask *them* you'll hear about how those people are wrong and there's a lot of nuance to those things.

It's al.ost like reducing a mode or genre to a homogenous blob has more to do with your taste then whether or not they're actually 'all the same'. In essence, only things they like have the luxury of being nuanced and complex while everything else is 'all the same'.

Secondly, its statistically impossible. Even when you're talking about a commercial franchise with a strong in house style from a major corporation there are enough slight variations to make the statement "They're all the same" useless. I've watched every single James Bond film except the most recent one and while it's a franchise I dislike and some of the less memorable ones blur together it would be moronic for me to say they're 'all the same'. Because it simply isn't true.

And that's one franchise from one studio, the minute to expand that to an entire company, or an entire era, or an entire decade, or an entire country? The statement is so cartoonishly incorrect as to be laughable.

Thirdly, there are people who make such blanket statements because they're trying to criticize certain trends with certain mediums at certain times. The problem is that by making such an absolute, extreme declarative statement you're opening yourself up to critiques that circumvent the point you're actually trying to make. If you want to critique gender roles or themes of nationalism in American westerns then pull specific westerns and cite those cases and illustrate how (even if it's not all of them) it's enough to be a concern. But saying 'all' opens you up to an argument about semantics and nobody wants that.

Also, why in the name of Charles Dickens and all the saints are you using quippy internet one liners to make complex academic points? That's a level of self sabotage that borders on masochism.

Fourthly, and to me the saddest, is that these kind of hyperbolic blanket statements always feel like excuses. Excuses to not explore and try things for contrived and fictional reasons. There's a lot of value in trying new things, but there's also value in trying things that you think you may not like. I used to think all WW2 war movies were boring but through actually watching some I realized that I just don't like 'Saving Private Ryan'. Yes, it's sometimes important to draw parameters around the things you want to try out and experience in art just to make things manageable, but those parameters at the very least should be malleable. There's something weirdly perverse about not only closing yourself off to certain art but celebrating and boasting about it like you're a better person for it.

What gets to me about how Estinien is characterized is it's taken two routes based on his major appearances in HVW and ENW: extremely violent and possessive brute, or extremely dumb farm boy who doesn't know what's going on. It completely erases what makes him compelling as a character, because he really is one of the most emotionally intelligent and frankly emotionally mature members of the Scions - we just were introduced to him during one of the worst parts of his life.

The Dragoon quests confirm the fact that every single Azure Dragoon - past or present - is fed Nidhogg's emotions upon being chosen by the Eye. For Estinien to have this overwhelming trauma of a violently orphaned child that now has a feedback loop of a thousand years of revenge-fueled grief, of course he's not going to be completely together! Of course he's going to lash out because the Ishgardian State looked at this orphaned kid and said "yeah, let's abuse his trauma and make him into a single minded killer". The HVW levequests confirm that Dragoons intentionally look for orphans of war and retraumatize them repeatedly through training on top of discouraging them from doing anything But that since they have such a high mortality rate. The See raised and trained a bunch of child soldiers who expected to die in service of their nation - no shit Estinien doesn't have any hobbies once he's out of HVW because he never thought he'd live to see the end of the war. But now that Nidhogg's anger and rage as eased up and given him a clearer head and that emptiness of a fulfilled revenge...guy's got his whole life ahead of him. Of course he's a bit goofy with food and other stuff; because he now gets to. He doesn't have to worry about that stuff. Of course he's a bit generous with his money, he never really made worldly attachments so it doesn't matter to him and we see that in 6.1 with the map. He didn't walk into a scam, he knew it was a scam - he just also knew that those two kids were banking on the scam to survive. This is also where we learn that the person who sold us the lassi was struggling to make ends meet - along with everyone else in the market.

Everyone assumes he's financially illiterate because he was a farm boy and that just frankly isn't something I vibe with due to how people view rural folks and their ability. Just because he's not from the city doesn't mean he's stupid. The illiterate jokes also aren't funny since it's a genuine issue even today. No, he may not be as strongly literate as the Scions, but it doesn't mean he's illiterate and thus dumb for it. You can be illiterate and still be very smart, we're just in an era where we've pretentiously tied the two skills together. The best character comparison to draw with him is from another franchise and a guy that's also emotionally intelligent but often written off as extremely stupid: Dante, if you're at all familiar with Devil May Cry. The story goes out of its way to show the fact that Dante does know what he's doing with money, he just doesn't care about himself as much as other people. He budgeted to save for his jacket in 5, but his paycheck gets split up between paying Lady back, paying off property damage, giving Trish a livable wage, and sneaking a fair amount of money to his nephew who won't accept it directly. He's not bad with money, he just doesn't care about the things we expect him to care about - like lights, running water, or frivolous purchases. Estinien reads very similar to this, since he seems content just living with what he's got on him now. Why keep money when it could go to someone who actually needs it?

The guy's deeply empathetic because of all he's been through. He's rural born and raised, but that doesn't make him stupid. He may not be a scholar like the rest of the Scions, but he's also about the only one who knows how to actually deal with emotionally fraught people due to living that - second would be Thancred, who also gets the stupid treatment from the fandom. Estinien's really good with kids, he apparently visits that orphanage that was built after 6.1, and not to mention he let himself get dragged around the star by Orn Khai who wanted to go traveling. He's sentimental - naming his spear after his mirror, Nidhogg, his armor after Ysayle, and he cannot stop looking at stuff in Radz when you're exploring with him and comparing it back to Aymeric - but he's also reserved. He's not one to extend himself due to past hurt, but that doesn't mean he's calloused.

The guy's a lot smarter than people give him credit for because he's predominantly emotionally intelligent - but he's also not stupid because he's from rural Coerthas. Folks really need to stop hearing rural/farm/illiterate/can't read and hearing dumb when that's the furthest from the truth. Because if we want to argue period appropriate literacy, most people could actually read - and if they couldn't, they had someone read for them. Didn't make them stupid. Reading was done by reading out loud as the silent reading we do today was exceptionally rare. Writing is a separate skill that was less common, and if you're not familiarized with it as a child the act is very physically painful. So applying this to Estinien, the guy can read, probably does read, and even if he doesn't that doesn't make him stupid. If he learned to write as an adult, he likely avoids it because it physically hurts (i at least write that as the case).

tl;dr: the guy's not stupid and emotional intelligence and illiteracy doesn't mean shit, especially in a setting like this. give him more credit, he's a 32yo orphan who lost everything to a petty war and then was used by his nation - chewed up and spat out - who gave him no skills to sustain himself beyond the ability to kill dragons really well. he clearly cares about others and he does so because he now has the chance to - and it's that exactly in the tags "he walked through hell and became gentler for it".

not me thinking abt how estinien is consistently one of the most emotionally intelligent characters (at least when it comes to other people) we have yet this is constantly forgotten or minimized

Its a bit dumb to some but serennedy has genuinely taken my life and changed it for the better. Between shitty life events and eras and personal struggles with gender identity. (And I really sympathize with your struggles dude, i hope things have been better since then.) Serennedy has managed to push me forward and have a strong positive impact on my psychology lmao.

Resident Evil has and always will be a very important thing to me, i grew up with it and naturally I've learned from the characters and used my connections to the characters as a way to understand myself. ESPECIALLY Ada and Leon both. But when I tell you. No character has ever impacted me as hard as Luis. And no ship has ever resonated with me as hard as Serennedy.

I've found more acceptance in myself, my history, my identity, and more hope through Luis and his arcs as a character. This silly little pixel man has made me feel more seen and understood than any character in media to exist. And to a smaller extent, Leon has had a similar effect on me. And serennedy as a ship has helped me grow as a person so much, and i cant stress it enough, helped me understand myself.

Non-Review: Free Comic Book Day 2021 - The Legend of Korra (Also Featuring Avatar: The Last Airbender)

With all the hype around 'Suki Alone,' it looks to me like most of the fandom missed that an additional Avatar comic with a story from each cartoon's era was just released for Free Comic Book Day. You can read them for yourself on either Dark Horse Digital or Comixology where it's mislabeled as being for ages 17+ (free accounts are required for both), but I'm sure one of the reasons you all love me is because of my willingness to jump in between you and these comics like the deadly bullets they can be. Well, I'm happy to die (metaphorically) for the sake of (a little anonymous internet) love, so I'm doing a full snarky review for each ten-page story. Also, I'm bored, and it's more fun to make fun of mediocre stuff than to praise stuff I like.

It's time for me to review "Free Comic Book Day 2021 - The Legend of Korra (Also Featuring Avatar: The Last Airbender)" or more specifically "The Legend of Korra: Clearing the Air" and "Avatar: The Last Airbender: Matcha Makers."

CLEARING THE AIR

The cover makes this look like a story about Jinora and Ikki having a sibling conflict. That's a lie. The Air Sisters arguing is merely the inciting incident for Tenzin telling a story of his youth. I should note that, as inconsequential as the Air Sisters stuff is, it's actually written very well because it posits Ikki as a victim of circumstance and Jinora as a bully who terrorizes her little sister with threats of getting thrown in jail by Metalbenders for an accident, cementing the characterization from the cartoon. This is not sarcasm. I really do think Jinora is presented by LoK as a Holier Than Thou little snot who just so happened to be naturally gifted with magic spirit-powers, but for some reason the rest of the fandom doesn't agree with me.

Anyway, Tenzin comes in to find the arguing (and Meelo just running amok for the fun of it and so far these characterizations are perfect), and rather than telling Jinora to shut her stupid face, he delivers a tale of his youth about conflict resolution.

So the meat of the story is how, when Tenzin was "a few years older" than Jinora, a pair of vandals got onto Air Temple Island and burned some graffiti into the spinning-panel things that Korra will destroy out of frustration during her Airbending training. Literally, the vandals are depicted as scorching the wood with enough smoke to be seen across a plaza. Tenzin goes after the vandals and they flee across the bay back to Republic City proper (one of the vandals is a Waterbender with a surf-plank). Tenzin pursues, catches them, and attacks them hard enough to smash some dockside crates. They are all then arrested by Metalbenders and dragged before Chief Toph. She's going to let Tenzin go (yay Toph!) and throw the vandals in jail (YAY TOPH!) and makes this face, and this entire comic is worth it:

However, Aang arrives and instead arranges to forgo the jail-time in favor of an Air Nomad Conflict Resolution Ceremony. This is nice and in-character, but I'm totally with Tenzin that these vandals should have been thrown in jail. They literally burned insulting graffiti into antiques from a genocided culture. But instead, Aang demonstrates conflict resolution by having Tenzin explain why he's hurt and what needs to be done to redress the wrong. And so the vandals help Tenzin scrub the graffiti off the panels with water and rags and mops- how, I don't know, since they were literally burned.

They also do a ceremony thing where they each take turns bending their element into a central space between them to 'clear the air' (GET IT GET IT HA HA IT'S ALMOST LIKE A PUN BUT NOT), so it's a good thing they were all Benders because this is kinda racist. This fixes all the problems and everyone is friends. Yay!

In the present, though, things are not so nice, because Tenzin's kids are still screaming at and provoking each other. Korra comes in with Asami at the end to ask what's going on, and Asami says nothing, so I still think everyone is characterized with perfect consistency with the cartoon.

I made this sound silly, but (aside from the spinny-panels getting cleaned with a little water and elbow-grease, which doesn't matter because Korra will eventually blow them all up anyway), I actually like this one. It has Tenzin demonstrate how much he's always had to work to be the Perfect Air Monk that everyone expects him to be, and Aang acknowledges how this is unfair but that Tenzin will never let him down no matter what. It also has Katara come in at the end (for just one line, boo!) to acknowledge that this was an especially easy little conflict for Tenzin to practice on and he'll eventually face worse. I found it a nice adult moment in a story that's otherwise clearly aimed at 8-year-olds.

The art is good. It's simpler than the LoK cartoon, with flat colors, but it captures the story and has enough liveliness for everyone's character to come across in their look and body-language. The brief action-sequence where Tenzin attacks the vandals is well done, moving quickly but showing the full flow of the fight and every move Tenzin makes.

MATCHA MAKERS

Apparently, "Matcha is finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea leaves, traditionally consumed in East Asia" according to Wikipedia. I had to look that up. I'm curious how many people understood the full reference in the title, especially since these comics are aimed at kids too young to be allowed on the internet.

This is a very simple story about Iroh in his tea-shop in Ba Sing Se. He has an assistant/waitress named Feng, a new character who wears glasses, ruining the hopes and dreams of all the fanfic-writers who were so sure he'd rescue Jin from the Lower Ring. A frequent patron of the tea shop is an elegant, older lady (very clearly Upper Ring material) named Li-Mei, who cannot go a single panel without giving Iroh a HEY BIG BOY look. She is very clearly smitten. Also, I feel the need to clarify that she knows his name is Iroh, so apparently Ba Sing Se is okay with the Dragon of the West serving tea to their wealthy. I don't say that as a criticism, I'm just noting it.

That night, Iroh meets up with his friends- the Pokemon-style spirits that we saw in Legend of Korra. (I don't know if they're the actual spirits from LoK, or just new spirits in the same style. This is because I would sooner grind matcha into my eyes than rewatch Book Spirits.) He serves them his special blend of tea and talks about how he's totally into Li-Mei but isn't going to pursue it because he's feeling old and doesn't want to take a risk. At this point, I could stop describing the plot because between the title and what I've said so far, I'm sure you could figure out every single plot beat that will follow.

The next day, the spirits trip Feng so that she drops Li-Mei's tea and Iroh needs to bring a replacement, and they've drawn hearts on top of the replacement tea with foam or sugar or milk or whatever. I don't know because I've never bought tea in a place that will even put the bag in the hot water for me. Iroh gets out of the situation without starting any love-affairs and runs into the back to tell the spirits to knock it off, dudes, they're totally embarrassing him! The spirits respond by giving him a flyer for a romantic restaurant. I don't know how they got it, so I can only assume that some Upper Ringer had their mail diverted.

Iroh refuses, so when Li-Mei orders more tea and he brings it to her, the spirits hover just out of her sight and threaten to smash the furniture. I am not making that up. They literally threaten to smash Iroh's furniture unless he asks the lady out. He submits to their tyrannical threats, Li-Mei happily accepts the date, he happily accepts her acceptance, and the story comes to a close. Iroh thanks his spirits friends for opening him up to new experience, but hopes that next time (so I guess Iroh is signing up for Tinder after this?) they won't threaten his shop.

At best, I can describe this story as 'harmless.' But it's been a long week and I just got a bunch more extra work at my day job that I really don't want to do, so I'm going to go ahead and call this story 'dumb.' It's rote, leans towards humor without actually being funny at all, and turns the spirits of the setting into Pokemon. And not even the cool dragon kind.

The art is strangely stiff. The coloring is soft and nice, but the drawings seems more 'assembled' than actually drawn. I swear there are even a few panels that reminded me of 'How I Became Yours' with janky poses, horrifying expressions, and just enough resemblance to the original cartoon to make me think a screenshot was partially traced and then ruined. (I'm not accusing the artist of tracing, BTW. I wouldn't even condemn the artist for tracing if they did. I'm just describing that HIBY feeling I got.) It was so stiff that rather than hear Iroh's dialogue in Mako's rich tones, I instead imagined Greg Baldwin doing a stiff Mako-impression with no naturalism to the delivery.

This story is definitely worthy of its "Also Featuring" billing. I'd rate it below Gene Yang's Mai and Suki FCBD short stories, but above everything else he wrote for Avatar.

So there you go. Overall, this is very middle-of-the-pack for Avatar FCBD stuff. It's very much of the nature of the 'Team Avatar Tales' stuff, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Iroh story was a leftover from that project. On Free Comic Book Day, you often get what you pay for.

I hate doctor 11 but ive never been able to explain why in like words lmao. He feels like such a mary sue character imo and like theres something about his characterisation that was always just really ineffective (like the stuff about fishfingers and custard or whatever it was). Imo i'd love to hear you give top 5 worst things about the 11 era because i rlly just love when it gets torn apart

i hold nothing but a seething contempt and loathing for that man. every time he appeared on screen i felt ready to snap like a riled up chimpanzee in my enclosure. i am frothing at the mouth and overcome with a desire to start flinging heavy objects. this might be incoherent and inconsistent but i started this rewatch in feb 2020 and only finished this week so i got through 11′s episodes last august/september time and i refuse to revisit it to jog my memory or fact check anything i’m saying here because this man does not deserve the space in my mind for that.

the first thing is i can’t fucking STAND the quirky whimsy timey wimey bit he has going on all of the time. i can’t even say this is because this is a kids show and i was a teen and then adult when i first properly watched him but actually!! when i was eleven years old i’d sleep over at a friend’s house most weekends and it always coincided with the airing of a new season 5 episode and i remember we watched the finale with the dumb time hopping to get out of the box prison that was never explained and didn’t make sense and i thought at the time “this is really stupid”. and before that my only other doctor who exposure was watching the david tennant christmas specials with another friend and throughout childhood my only opinion on doctor who was “this is a tv show that is not for me but is one that all the boys i am friends with like so i will put up with it to maintain our friendships” but at least those episodes were both suspenseful and engaging enough to keep me watching all the way through. like who the fuck does an end of the world sci fi plot and approaches it with an “oopsy woopsy i am a funny little alien man who is going to stop you all by making you do a hecking silly” like it’s unneeded and self-parodies an already cheesy show to the point where it becomes unwatchable and makes it impossible to ever take this man seriously.

next thing that downright sucks ass so badly is the stupid fucking overwritten constantly escalating plotlines. like everything from season 5 up until his regeneration at the end of season 7 is meant to be this grand interconnected cosmic plot about how...the doctor trying to bring back his planet will end the universe or something so all the top powers across all of reality tried again and again to stop him from doing that except he doesn’t know what’s going on so he keeps thwarting these people who supposedly mean good?? i mean i sure don’t fucking know what they were trying to say!! like for some reason we never get the doctor suddenly becomes this superdemon that threatens everything so these people (whoever they are) decide to, in sequence: suck him through a time rift to erase him from existence, trap him in a prison and remake a universe without him, take his companion’s baby and turn her into a perfectly trained doctor killer, form two(!!) secret societies to hunt him throughout history that are only stopped by his companion splintering herself across his personal timeline to protect him, and repeatedly cause reality collapsing events because it’s a kinder outcome for the universe than what he will do. this grand and terrible event turns out to be...he spends a few hundred years chilling by a rift that leads to his home planet and protects a few generations of children from monsters which convinces them to give him infinite regeneration power then fuck off back to their pocket universe. and it’s like!! what is the point of anything that happens in this man’s era when everything is always “the darkest moment” or whatever the fuck!! i don’t care!! we never get a compelling reason to believe this bumbling clown of a man could ever be a universal threat!! the whole thing is so dumb i hate it!!!

thing number three i hate is how the eleventh doctor is ALSO characterised as this abrasive egotistic male supergenius to the point where he becomes genuinely indistinguishable from bbc sherlock. genuinely who enjoyed seeing this guy constantly tell people their tiny human minds can’t comprehend what he’s doing and then basically just wave his magic wand to solve whatever problem each episode is facing. 2012 is the year of human sin because this fucking shitsmear character archetype somehow became both a redditor role model AND a tumblr sexyman and it’s like!! nobody is enjoying this stop making this seem cool! him saying timey wimey thing any time he does anything is frustrating and dumb and locks the viewer out of giving a fuck about anything that is happening! smartest man in the room syndrome is a disease and the eleventh doctor is terminal with it. like remember how they established river as an accomplished scientist (when she wasn’t being a child soldier or a time paradox or whatever the fuck) and every time that came up mr doctor eleven man was like “oh this thing is obvious because i’m a genius and you didn’t realise because your brain is tiny so get out of the way and let the grownups think” or that time it turned out amy had been replaced with a slime clone for half the season and the doctor chewed rory (audience surrogate) out for somehow not realising this fact we didn’t know right from the start and like. this served no purpose other than to draw into severe question why the doctor is also this super beloved magical figure implicitly trusted by all children everywhere like. mr steven moffat is totally allergic to writing and solving mysteries in his tv show and fuck you for wanting to figure things out as you go along based on the new evidence you uncover at strategic plot intervals just let this asshole man use magical thinking to reveal he knew the answer all along and you’re a fucking idiot for not also realising this thing which had no basis or precedent anywhere else in the show.

speaking of dumb things let us not forget the absolute shitshow that was minority representation in this era. i’m not even talking about the low hanging fruit of how genuinely unironically sexist amy and clara were written where each episode moffat either seemed to loathe them or was incredibly horny over them and they had no character growth or arc or fucking anything. i’m talking about how fucking shit terrible the incidental representation was. god remember how every single fucking gay person who appeared in this era was written as one incredibly fucking stupid joke and how the women were all either sexy dominatrix, feeble girl in love, or Mother (or all three in some really terrible cases) and i’m not qualified to talk about this but also how incredibly white this era was and how on two separate occasions we had monarchs reimagined as sexy girlbosses with a gun played by black women who the doctor leched over. nothing about any of this was good ESPECIALLY coming off the back of rtd who was surprisingly forward thinking for 2005 and did a really good job of positing travel with the doctor as queer allegory. in comparison moffat gave us THE MOST heterosexual shlock i’ve ever had to endure. amy and rory could have been interesting characters were they not hemmed into this domestic bickering young straight married couple bullshit that was in no way changed or altered by traveling with the doctor except for the quasi incestuous river song reveal that was dumb and bad and stupid.

the last major mega gripe i have with the series is moffat’s fucking jingoistic boner for british military aesthetics. this carried over throughout his entire tenure as showrunner but was super terrible vomit inducing in eleven’s era. the unironic admiration for ww2 britain and winston churchill is downright wretched. are you incapable of telling a second world war story outside of churchill’s london and plucky blitz fighters. shit gives me hives so badly. and then!!! that weird church owned army that features in the future that end up being bad not for the concept of what basically amounts to an imperialistic intergalactic rendition of the fucking crusades but because they’re part of the nonsense go nowhere puzzlebox narrative that says the doctor is a not good man who will do bad things to the universe :(. remember how rtd’s doctor was a freshly traumatised man hot off the war criminal press who time and time again vehemently refuses to engage in military violence, but who tragically inadvertently turns every one of his companions into soldiers in his own personal army, and he has this moment of complete horror at the realisation and it is this which causes the downward spiral that ends in 10′s regeneration. and then how there’s this cringe line about how there’s a force of people who are “the doctor’s army, always ready to fight his battles when he’s not around” or some shit and then it turns out this is actually massive literal military operation and we’re meant to celebrate this. fuck off.

bonus round because this needs to be said but i have never hated anything like i hated that fucking human tardis episode. everything about it induced violent anger in me from the sickening overindulgence of that softgoth dark whimsy helena bonham carter tim burton aesthetic to the bafflingly terrible evil carny stereotype of those junk scavengers to the overblown sudden tragic shipbait romance of human tardis and the doctor. every word out of her mouth was trite shit and the fact that the death of her body was presented as this super emotional dramatic scene despite there being no buy in or incentive to care and the fact that every single person on tumblr in 2012 ate that shit up like it was fucking gourmet. i loathe every single thing about that episode so much.
