“Device to Root Out Evil” (1997 - Dennis Oppenheim) / “Travelling Light” (2013 - inges dee)
DEVICE TO ROOT OUT EVIL: one of the ONLY pieces of art i convinced my dad specifically to go see, and he thought was powerful in the moment (2 years later he pretended he hated it), there was something oddly visceral about being able to walk around this semi-translucent, semi-holed upside down church that might have just fallen from the sky. (anonymous)
TRAVELLING LIGHT: to go with the other two Calgarian public art installations, the one that is Loathed by the majority of Calgary. Now, Calgary had a portion of the budget set aside for major works for public art. A contest was held for public art installations for the revamp of this interchange. 19 submissions were Canadian, 3 were Calgarian. The winning design was German. If you talk to a Calgarian about the required tithe for public art for all major projects, they will complain about This. Even the mayor, newly elected when it was installed, hated it. People will complain about wasting Millions Of Dollars on some blue circle. (it did not cost millions of dollars) And it doesn't even work. The streetlights turned on, oh, once? Ever? So now it sits, cresting the horizon as you drive towards the airport. Infamy, concentrated. (anonymous)
("Device to Root Out Evil is an art installation created by American conceptual artist Dennis Oppenheim. It is made of aluminum, galvanized steel, Venetian glass, and Plexiglass and measures 6.7 m by 5.5 m by 2.75 m. It is located on 5th St Square in Calgary, Canada and was moved there from Vancouver after public protests.
"Travelling Light" is also an art installation located in Calgary, Canada. It is made of steel and was created by the art collective inges dee. It is 55 ft tall (17 m).)

I've never really requested anything so I might be doing this wrong but 2 from angst and 9 from fluff would be cute with Matty, like he wakes up from a dream of you kicking his ass in hockey or something silly like that and just tells you that you two can't be friends
"We can't be friends anymore" - Matthew Tkachuk
Tumblr media
It is to nobody's surprise that Matthew likes to sleep in. Especially in days when he doesn't have a game or morning skate. Like, that man is able to sleep until 5 pm if you let him.
But, when you also have a day off (of college or work), even though you wake up slightly earlier than him, you also sleep in. So, you can say that the love for sleeping is mutual in your relationship.
Opposite to Matthew, though, is that you do get up usually when you really need to go to the bathroom or your body is just growling for food. Which tends to be a tad bit too early for Matthew’s liking.
Matthew usually wakes up when you get up to do either of those, but he falls right back asleep when you're out of reach.
And that's exactly when he hates sleeping in.
Whenever he wakes up, even if it's just for a split second, and goes back to sleep, he has the weirdest of dreams. Not always nightmares, sometimes they are kind of terrifying but they’re mostly just weird.
And today, while you were making your breakfast, or, should you say, lunch, he was sleeping peacefully under the covers and over the overly comfortable bed. While, in his dream, battling against you in a game of hockey.
When the food was ready, you walked back to the bedroom just to check if Matt would already be awake and maybe if he would be willing to get up and eat something.
And that’s when you've wanted to have recorded walking in your bedroom because the image was just hilarious.
Matthew was sitting up, fully awake. His eyes widened, he had a slight scowl of confusion written on his face, his hair was a bigger mess than you've ever seen it before, and his mouth was left slightly agape.
When he did notice you by the doorway, he didn't even blink before saying.
"We can't be friends anymore."
To say you were confused was a large understatement, because...
"Matthew," You started, "We've been dating for three years. What do you mean?"
He closes and reopens his mouth, like a fish trying to breathe out of the water, and scrunches up his face, looking back at you after looking down at the carpet of your bedroom.
"I- Do-do you know how to skate?" He asks, tilting his head slightly to the side as he says it.
"Yeah, a bit.” You say, “I’ve skated with you a tone of times before, why?"
You make your way towards the bed and take a seat at the end of it, giving him probably the largest look of confusion ever.
"And..." He hesitates for a second, "Have you ever played hockey?"
Now you were even more confused.
"No? I mean-" Matthew sends you a look of pure fear, "Not ever competitively, just as a joke between friends."
You mean street hockey, of course. You've been out with your drunk friends a few times, walking around the streets of Calgary as a young adult and deciding 'hey, let's play hockey!'.
You don't even own a stick, you just used one of the stick bins close to the street rinks and a rock as a puck. You honestly only own skates.
"And did you win?"
"Matthew, what-"
"Did you win?"
You stare back at his bright eyes, even though swollen from sleep, they looked so awake it's starting to be terrifying.
"Uh..." You hesitate and Matthew feels his whole body tense up, "Yeah?"
"Oh god." He whispers to himself in complete panic.
Matthew brings his hands up to his head in disbelief, gripping onto his hair tightly while closing his eyes as if to not look at you.
"What's going on with you?" You ask him, confused.
Have you done something wrong? And if you did, why did it have to do with you knowing how to skate or play hockey? Especially, why is he questioning you now that he just wok-
"I had a dream about us." He starts to explain. "And, god..." He whispers his last words.
As Matthew fights with his mind, you look at him quizzically. Was it a nightmare? But again, why hockey?
"I had a dream about us," He restarts, letting his hands fall by his sides, "We were like in a rink playing around. And-and out of fucking nowhere, we both had like teams and a god damn audience..."
You blink at him.
"It looked like the damned playoffs, it was that intense." He adds.
"Were we in the same team at least?" You ask him.
He shakes his head, eyes widening again almost as if trying to say, 'oh absolutely fucking not'.
"You, and your god damn team, were destroying me." He explains, emphasizing the word, "I'm talking: slamming me against the boards nonstop, you would trip me all the time but NEVER go into the box."
Matthew stares at the wall as if to try and remember every detail and you bite your lips not to smile, but it goes noticed.
"You even high-sticked me in the mouth!" He now looks at you again, "And I lost a tooth!"
You bring your hand up to your mouth to control your upcoming laughter and Matthew just sends you a glare.
"Was it your front tooth?" You ask playfully, just making his glare worsen.
You were making fun of him!
"Oh, is this funny to you?" He asks, "Because... Just so you know, it was terrifying to me."
You lay your hand over his leg, which is still under the covers, comfortingly and decide not to hide your smile anymore.
"I'm just making the important questions." You shrug, "Now... Was it your front tooth?"
He stays silent for a few seconds and then lets out a sigh.
"Yeah, it was my front tooth." He whispers, almost as if disappointed with himself.
"Awn." You awe at him and his little sad tone and you get up from the end of the bed.
You sit beside Matt, facing him, and he continues to send you a glare, this time a lighter one.
"No need to worry about my hockey skills like that, Matty." You say teasingly, laying your hand over his naked shoulder, "I know it's hard to accept it, but, sometimes the talent just resides on others."
His glare falls as he looks at you with complete and utter disbelief and you smile brightly at him.
"What? You don't think I could beat you in a game of hockey?" You tease further, "Baby, that dream was just a teaser of the real thing."
Before you could even register that you've ended your sentence, Matthew takes a hold of your hips and lifts you up ever so slightly before throwing you on the center of the bed.
You laugh at he does it and he quickly moves to hover over you, yanking the covers from his legs and laying in between your legs while holding himself up by his arms.
"You're evil." He tells you seriously as you continue to smile brightly at him. "Absolutely vile!"
You giggle as he says the words and your hands lay on his warm shoulders.
Matthew has an idea, and in that split second, he snuggles into your neck, letting his beard tickle you effortlessly, and his hands rest over your sides, over your ribs tickling crazily.
Your laughter feels the room as he lays kisses over the skin of your shoulder and neck, while you try to smack his hands away.
"Wai- wa- wait!" You try to plead in between giggles, "Stop please!"
Matt laughs with you as he continues and your giggles continue to bounce off the walls in the bedroom. The smile on his face is as large as yours, and if you weren’t fighting for air right now, you would be just admiring it.
Out of nowhere, Matthew stops abruptly, letting you finally gasp for air.
"I couldn't breathe!" You squeak at him as he sits back on his knees to stare at you, "My god..." You take a deep breath.
"Take that as half of your punishment." He says while pointing at your out-of-breath self.
"For what?" You lay your hand over your chest.
"Everything you just told me!" He says like it's obvious, "And for beating me in hockey."

ONE
You knew you ran the risk of running into him when you moved from St. Louis to Calgary. But you couldn’t pass up the job opportunity you were given, even if it meant you were looking over your shoulder as if to avoid running into him.
But after three months of living in Calgary you hadn’t seen him, so you were certain you were in the clear. You reasoned that he would’ve popped up sooner, you followed each other on Instagram and have each other added on Snapchat, so you knew that he knew you were in Calgary. You pushed him to the back of your mind, though, not wanting him to take up any more residence in your mind than he already did. And after a while you figured you were safe from his presence and any headaches that seemed to follow him around.
So imagine your surprise when he shows up while you’re in the middle of a date.
Chris is a nice guy. It’s your third date, and the bar he’s taken you to is a little more on the casual side, but the Edmonton vs. Canucks game was on the television above the bar and you knew he was a big hockey guy.
Clearly, you had a type.
“So, I think my boss is going to give me a big project, which would be a huge step in the right direction for the promotion I—” You were gushing about the news you had received earlier in the day, but you were unable to finish your thought as Chris yelled.
“Oh, fuck off, Mcdavid! You should have scored that.”
After realizing that he wasn’t talking about your ability to buy a goal or calling you McDavid, you learned two things about the man sitting across from you. One, he hadn’t been listening to a single word you were saying and you could count on the hockey game being more interesting to him than anything you could have said. You should have known, anyways, on your first date he spent five whole minutes talking about how the Oilers were his favorite team after you mentioned you grew up in St. Louis. And two, he was that kind of hockey fan. The kind that tore down their team’s top players over any little screw-up. The kind that made your skin crawl after having grown up with the sport.
“It was a rookie mistake.” Chris’ attention turned to you since it was a T.V. timeout and you blinked at him for a moment, wondering just how your night took a downturn so quickly. The bar was so low, and he managed to limbo under it.
“McDavid. Rookie mistake?” You blanched, propping your chin on your hand as you waited to see what kind of bullshit excuse he funneled at you. He stuttered over his words, and you were about to interject with a very well laid out explanation about how players were people and able to make mistakes without having their skill questioned. Plus, it was McDavid.
But then a hand landed casually on your shoulder, and your first instinct was to turn and face whoever decided it was a good idea to randomly touch with a scowl. Your frown only deepened when you spotted who it was, completely ignoring the choked noise Chris made.
Of course he had to show up on the one night you were on a date.
“Couldn’t hide from me forever.” Matt drawled easily, removing his hand from you and leaning against the edge of the tall table you were sitting at. You rolled your eyes, not at all surprised at the fact that he decided to start the first actual conversation you’ve had with him in weeks with a tease.
“I’ll try harder next time.” You stated dryly, taking a sip of your nearly empty drink and avoiding the gaze of both men around you. Well, Chris was too busy eyeing Matthew and puffing out his chest as if he was trying to assert his dominance. Please.
You didn’t get the appeal of Matthew. Sure, he was attractive and pretty good at hockey, not that you’d ever admit that to anyone, but he was a pest. He grew up next door to you, which meant the better part of your childhood was spent at the mercy of Matt’s teasing. You adored the rest of his family, you had a four-hundred and thirty-six day Snapchat streak with Taryn, a number seven Senators jersey hanging up in your closest, Chantal’s number was saved as ‘mama tkachuk’ in your phone, and you had once called Keith in a panic when you were sixteen and got a flat tire and your parents weren’t answering.
Matt had laughed at you when you stumbled walking across the stage at graduation.
You were not his biggest fan.
“Hot date?” Matt questioned, not even looking over to Chris who nodded the moment the words entered the air. You winced at the question, because you were technically on a date, but you weren’t exactly feeling it, especially after what had just transpired. But you would marry Chris on the spot if it meant annoying Matt.
“I’ll see you later.” You spoke through gritted teeth, plastering on a forced and obviously fake smile. Matt grinned at you, his mischievous look that you had seen a thousand times growing up that warned you that he was going to do something to get under your skin made warning alarms flash in your mind.
Your suspicions were proven correct when he reached a hand up to ruffle your hair before slipping back into the crowd. You pouted, glaring at his back until you couldn’t see his mop of curls anymore and turned to face Chris again. Your date was looking at you with an annoyed expression, one that was surely mirrored on your face but the only difference was his look was directed at you and yours was at Matthew for showing up out of nowhere.
“Are you okay—?” You barely got the question out before Chris was interrupting you. Again.
“You can’t talk to him if we’re going to see each other.” He stated, as if it was that easy.
It wasn’t as if you wanted to hang out with Matt, not since you hit middle school, but it would be a cold day in hell before some guy told you who you could and could not talk to.
“We’re neighbors, nothing will ever be going on there but our families are good friends. I literally have to talk to him whenever I go home.” You weren’t sure why you were explaining this to him, maybe a part of you wanted to see if he’d bactrack and apologize, even if the relationship was damaged beyond repair. Those hopes were squashed the moment he spoke next.
“Then I’m out.” And he was standing up, barely giving you a second look before he was headed towards the door.
It was pettiness that had you crossing the bar in search of the one person that you couldn’t stand to be around for an extended period of time. You had seen a whole new side of Chris in a matter of five minutes and a small part of you was glad that Matt interrupted and brought it out. Emphasis on small, though.
“You owe me a drink.” You nudged Matt’s shoulder, sliding in next to him at the bar. You didn’t care that you were interrupting his conversation with one of his teammates, you had just been dumped by the guy you’d been somewhat seeing for a few weeks because he couldn’t handle the idea of you knowing a NHL player. “Scared my date away because he didn’t like the fact that I talk to you.”
“I feel like I did you a favor, if he really is that insecure. We don’t even like each other.” He had waved down the bartender with a chuckle, ordering you a beer like the one he had clutched in his hand. It was seconds before the cool glass was set in front of you. Perks of being a hotshot hero in Calgary, you assumed.
“I’ll drink to that.” You clinked your bottle against his, taking a generous sip as Matt watched with an amused grin. He was leaning against the counter, his back now fully turned on his teammates. Clearly, he wasn’t planning on letting you finish your drink in peace.
“Mom told me you got your dream job, so tell me about it.”
“Like you care.” You rolled your eyes with a scoff. You were feeling especially bitter, and you were taking it out on Matt. To be fair, he was taking it all in stride, but you knew he was biding his time until he could make a joke.
“Try me.” Matt wasn’t a bad guy. Annoying, sure. A pain in your ass? Since the day you met. But you knew him better than most—begrudgingly, of course—and you could tell he was genuinely curious. He probably had plans to tease you about it later, you would put money on the fact, but with the way your night had turned out, you couldn’t find it in you to care.
“Fine, but just until I finish this drink and my Uber gets here.”
TWO
mama tkachuk: Hi sweetie! Keith and I are in town for the weekend and were wondering if you wanted to get dinner with us and Matt! Text me when you get a chance!
It was so unfair. How could Chantal be as sweet as she was and have produced a child like Matthew? You were so caught up in how kind her invitation was that you had agreed to meet up with them before it really set in that you would have to sit through a dinner with Matt.
You had arrived at the restaurant a few minutes later than the agreed upon time due to traffic, so everyone else was already at the table by the time you made it. Chantal was the first to jump up and greet you with a hug, Keith following after with a ‘how are you, kid’ and a tight squeeze. You shot Matt a tight-lipped smile, trying to remain civil infront of his parents, and he returned with his typical smug grin, though it was more subdued than usual as a result of sitting next to his mother.
“You always liked to be late.” Matt teased as you sat down. You rolled your eyes at him, annoyed but willing to let the comment slide for the sake of his parents.
“I don’t know why you guys bicker all the time, you used to tell us all the time that you were going to be a family someday. You guys even practiced with Taryn and Brady.” Chantal reminisced, and you smiled uneasily at the memory. It wasn’t necessarily an unpleasant one, some of your best memories took place in the Tkachuk living room. Back when you were kids, you and Matt were attached at the hip. Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum—if Matt was caught sticking his hand in the cookie jar you were right at his side reminding him to grab one for you too. This particular instance stuck out in your mind, though, because your mom teased you about it whenever she got the chance.
It was a rainy Saturday, Keith was out of town for hockey and your dad was at the office, which left the moms sitting in the kitchen chatting about whatever adults talked about. Taryn had just learned how to walk, which meant that she was trying to follow you around to the best of her ability, even if that meant watching from the sidelines as you played mini sticks with her brothers.
But after Matt had scored against you and Brady enough times, you declared that it was time for them to play your game—house. Taryn was your baby, and she happily filled the roll as she toddled behind you. Brady was your other son, and Matt was the dad. You played like that for an hour or so, Matt pretending to come home from road trips while playing in the NHL just like his father, only to help you pretend to cook dinner and put ‘the kids’ to bed.
At six years old, he was a dream pretend-father.
“I can’t help it if Matthew runs his mouth too much.” You chirped, and though you meant it in good fun there was some seriousness. Matt never knew when to quit, his comments more obnoxious than endearing most of the time. Though, he did have his moments, you were willing to admit. You knew he had your back when it came down to it, but he also would be the first one to crash your date and tell the guy you were with some embarrassing story about you from when you were seven.
He did that no less than three separate times when you were teenagers.
“Remember when they pretended to get married at like six? And Matt cried when I told him that he wasn’t actually her husband.” Keith nudged his wife with a grin, his statement earning a groan from Matt. You flushed, keeping quiet as the memory flashed in your head—the theme of the night, apparently.
It was a summer wedding, so to speak. Sometime during the offseason your family and the Tkachuks rented a lake house for a week and you spent the entire time racing from one activity to the next while clutching Matt’s hand. Your aunt had just gotten married, so weddings were on your mind and you decided you wanted a party like she had. Your choices for potential husbands were limited, Brady and Matt the only other boys close to your age. When Brady claimed that you had cooties and ran away, Matt was the only option left and it simply took the bribe of sharing your dessert with him after dinner for him to agree.
You had made paper rings and even forced Matt to fake propose to you, all while both your mothers looked on with camera’s clutched in their hands. You had claimed your unending love for Matt that day, and he had done the same. In an effort to tease you, your mom had said that he had to kiss the bride and you both looked at her like she was crazy—though he did end up pressing a quick and sloppy kiss to the back of your hand to appease her.
And then twenty minutes later he shoved you off the dock because you were too scared to jump in.
Matt was watching you as his mother told the story, chuckling as she added in anecdotes about how she and your mother had almost started planning your real wedding that day and similar comments. It was no secret that she was rooting for you to get together with her son, and even though Keith would try to get his wife to tone down her comments, you saw his smug grin every once on a while.
The rest of dinner and dessert passed by with minimal reminiscing, and soon enough the check was paid. Matt picked up the bill, and though you tried to argue that you could pay for yourself, Matt simply stuck his tongue out at you and Keith said that he would’ve paid for everyone if he had only been able to grab the check faster. You rolled your eyes at Matt’s childishness, but thanked Keith for his kindness despite the fact that he hadn’t even really done anything.
“So where did you park?” Chantal asked as the four of you stepped outside. The cold air made you shiver, and you used one hand to tighten your coat around you while the other gestured over your shoulder in the general direction of where your car was.
“Like three blocks away. It was pretty busy when I got here.” You replied. Chantal nodded, opening her arms for a hug you readily reciprocated.
“I’ll walk you. It’s way too late for you to go by yourself.” Matt spoke up, interrupting your goodbyes with his parents. He handed his keys off to his dad so they could wait in the car while he went with you, and because he simply couldn’t just be nice, he added his next comment. “You’d probably get lost if I don’t go with you.”
“Thanks, Matt.” You said sarcastically, the roll of your eyes coming almost naturally. There wasn’t room for you to argue, because Chantal was nudging you in the opposite direction she was headed to get to Matt’s car. Part of you wondered if she somehow planned this in an another attempt to get you to spend time alone with her son. You didn’t have time to think about it too much, between saying goodbyes and making plans to meet up when you went home for the holidays, you were rushing a bit to get out of the cold.
While you walked, Matt stayed quiet, something you didn’t realize he was capable of. Your hands were shoved deep into your coat pockets to try and stay warm, but you felt his arm brush against yours every once in a while.
“Thanks for coming tonight, mom loved it.” He was softer now, his voice devoid of any of its usual smugness.
“Are you kidding? I love your parents.” You teased, trying to figure out where this quiet side of Matt was coming from. It was the side of him that rarely came out, especially in front of the media and never on the ice, but it was the side that you got along with the best. You stopped at your car, turning to face Matt. “Thanks for walking me.”
“No problem. Uh, text me when you get home, or whatever. So I know you got there safe.” He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly, a slight redness to his cheeks that caught you off guard. You nodded, unlocking your car and offering him one last smile and goodbye before climbing in.
You couldn’t help but grin to yourself as you drove home. He was trying.
THREE
You had the worst luck.
Firstly, the only flight you could get home for the holidays was a red-eye to try and save some money. Secondly, your parents were making you get a cab from the airport instead of coming to pick you up. It was fine, you were an adult and could handle both those things. You had long come to terms with it by the time you were settling into your seat as everyone boarded.
But third—
“No way am I this lucky.”
The sound of the familiar voice had you tilting your head back with a groan, not even bothering to look at the person who was dropping unceremoniously into the seat beside you. Though his curls were tucked under his hoodie and he was trying his best to remain undetected, his presence was one that you would recognize anywhere.
“I’m just really, really, unlucky.” You told Matt, and though your comment was a jab at him, he wore the same grin he always did.
“That’s mean.” He teased, reaching over to poke your side because of course he hasn't outgrown giving you jumper cables. You glared at him, momentarily pausing your efforts to dig through your bag in search of your headphones just so he knew how annoyed you were. Not that he cared, or that it ever really stopped him.
“Look, Matt, I’ve had a long day, and I was looking forward to just sleeping this whole flight.” You sighed, dragging a hand down your face in frustration.
“I’ll leave you alone, promise.” Matt grinned that stupidly smug grin of his.
Yeah, right. You thought, but kept the comment to yourself. It was better to let Matt think he won than invite him to keep going by replying. He grinned at you, simply miming zipping his lips shut as you rolled your eyes.
He lasted longer than you thought he would—ten minutes.
“I don’t know what you don’t like about me so much, it’s not the hockey thing, because you love Brady.” Matt spoke up, going so far as to pull your headphone out of your ear so you could hear him.
“Brady’s adorable and like a baby brother to me.” You said matter-of-factly, earning a snicker from Matt. “You chipped my tooth when we were twelve and then blamed it on me.”
“I’m sure he’ll be glad to hear that.” He snorted, and for a second you thought he’d leave it at that. He had succeeded in getting under your skin, just like he usually did. “And it was your fault. You weren’t paying attention.”
“You didn’t have to shoot the pucks at me that hard!” You frowned at the memory. You had offered to stand in goal for him while he practiced shooting, and though you were definitely not destined to play in the NHL like him, that didn’t stop him from acting as if he was taking part in the hardest shot competition.
Matt didn’t respond, instead he just shook his head with a grin. Clearly, he was more amused by the memory than you were.
He went back to leaving you alone, though he stole one of your headphones and placed it into his ear to listen. He scrunched his nose up at the song, and you rolled your eyes at the silent jab at your taste in music.
Eventually, you did end up falling asleep. When you woke up to Matthew shaking you gently, you realized that you had fallen asleep on his shoulder and that he was waking you since you had landed and people were starting to exit. You waited for the chirps to come about your subconscious action, knowing he probably had a few comments up his sleeve. Except, he didn’t say anything, only stood up to retrieve both of your carryon bags from the overhead storage.
Matt stuck by your side the entire time you got off the plane and headed to luggage claim, unable to help himself from chirping you at the fact you couldn’t find your suitcase. You poked your tongue out at him, admittedly a little juvenile on your behalf, when you spotted your bag come around the carousel. Before you could grab it, though, he snagged it and stuck his tongue out at you before departing into the airport in search of his parents. Now, you were forced to trail after him.
Your annoyance faded, though, when you heard Chantal call your and Matthew’s names. You smiled at the woman, who hugged her son quickly before turning and pulling you into her arms.
“Guess who I got to sit next to?” Matt chimed, sounding a bit too pleased with himself for your liking. You rolled your eyes, unable to help the tiny bit of amusement you felt at how excited Chantal looked at the idea that you had each other on the flight. You and Matt may both be adults, but to her, you were still toddlers that needed constant supervision and she loved the idea that you were there to watch after each other.
“Oh, that’s lucky!” Chantal cheered and you grit your teeth, forcing a smile on your face at the way Matt was grinning smugly at you. Okay, you figured it could have been worse, you could have been seated next to a creep, but you weren’t about to admit that to Matt.
“So lucky.” You muttered sarcastically. Thankfully, Matthew wasn’t given a chance to comment further on your response, as his dad spoke up before he could.
“Is your dad here? I got a new set of clubs I want to brag about.” Keith questioned and you shook your head with a genuine smile. Living next to a retired NHLer gave your dad plenty of opportunities to bring out his competitive side, and golf was definitely one of their favorite pastimes.
“No, he and mom couldn’t come to get me because they both had work.” You explained and Keith rolled his eyes in good fun. You always wondered how both families got along so well when you couldn’t stand Matt.
“Do you want a ride home then?” Chantal offered sweetly.
“That’d be great, thank you.” You were glad you wouldn’t have to worry about getting an Uber, and you didn’t feel as if you were crashing the Tkachuks’ time with their oldest son since as soon as you started to head to the car, Chantal fell in step with you.
“Oh, Matt, you’re being such a gentleman, carrying her suitcase for her.” Chantal gushed after having noticed that Matt had an extra bag and you didn’t have one. She shot you a look and you just knew this was only fueling her belief that you were destined to end up with Matt. She would probably mention it to your mother, and then you really never would hear the end of it.
“Didn’t know you had it in you.” Keith chirped, earning an eye roll from Matt and laughter from you and Chantal. It was all in good nature, the teasing comments a sign of love amongst the hockey family.
And really, you had no choice but to agree with Keith.
FOUR
“I need you to run next door and give this to Chantal.” Your mom told you, holding out a tray of holiday cookies. You sighed, reluctantly getting up from your spot on the living room couch. You weren’t doing anything, but the aspect of having to walk all the way next door was not totally appealing.
But you did as she said and stuffed on some shoes before heading next door and letting yourself in. Taryn was the first to greet you, taking the tray of cookies and leading you towards the kitchen. As soon as the platter was set down, you both helped yourself to a cookie.
“How’s Calgary? Is Matt showing up randomly to bug you?” She was teasing, but she was right. You laughed, nodding as you broke off a piece of your cookie to eat.
“He showed up while I was on a date, completely by chance, and ruined it.” You chuckled at the memory and at the way Taryn laughed loudly at that. It wasn’t entirely true, Chris was doing a pretty good job of ruining the date on his own, but Matt’s appearance was the final nail in the coffin.
“That’s because he's practically in love with you.” She spoke between giggles. You rolled your eyes, having heard the comment countless times before. It had followed you and Matt around since you were kids, and by the time you were thirteen it morphed from platonic love to your moms explaining what soulmates were to you guys. You’d be lying if you said you hadn’t considered the idea of Matt having a thing for you, but you had long since given up on that idea.
You didn’t have time to comment on it, though, because speak of the devil, and he shall appear.
“What’re you guys talking about?” Matt marched into the room, a smug grin on his face. While he spoke, he reached across to where you were standing and broke off a piece of the cookie you were still eating. With a pout, you watched him pop your cookie into his mouth all the while eye contact with you and wearing a self-satisfied grin.
“Oh, just how you’re in love with each other.” Taryn said casually, her sentence punctuated by Matt choking on the cookie. Clearly, he was caught off guard.
“You deserved that, and no, we were not.” You told Matt as he tried to catch his breath. You couldn’t help the grin you were wearing, and for a brief second you acknowledged that he looked adorable all flustered. Matt shot a glare at his sister, who was laughing hysterically at him, and launched forward to dig his fingers into her sides.
You watched carefully as he tickled his sister mercilessly, preparing to make a break for the living room if he turned his attention to you. You were smiling, widely and genuinely, as you watched Matt mess around with his sister.
This was the Matt that you grew up best friends with.
As you were distracted, Matt let his sister go and she caught her breath while cursing him out and you let out a loud laugh at some of the creative things she said. She certainly was from a hockey family.
But then Matt turned his attention to you, a wicked grin on his face and a playful look in his eyes. Your own eyes went wide, and as soon as he took half a step towards you, you spun on your heel and dashed out of the kitchen.
You heard him chasing after you, but you didn’t risk looking back knowing that if you even wanted a chance to outrun him you would need to stay focused. And as you took a particularly sharp turn into the other room, you heard him crash into the wall, clearly not as agile as he thought he was.
“Hi, Mr. and Mrs. Tkachuk! I brought cookies from Mom!” You greeted with a laugh as you sprinted past Keith and Chantal in the hallway. You barely had time to register their looks of amusement before you felt Matt’s fingers brush your back, signaling that he was close to grabbing you.
“Don’t hurt her, we like her more than you!” Keith called after you, teasing Matt and catching him off guard enough that he stumbled, and you were able to put some distance between you and him. You were laughing maniacally, the sound mixing with Matt’s chuckles and Taryn encouraging you to run faster.
Eventually, you made it to the living room, and you spotted Brady’s head poking up behind the back of the couch as he watched some rerun hockey game. You know it’s a longshot that Matt will give up and that you need to bite the bullet and let him catch you, but your stubbornness is what makes you throw yourself over the back of the couch, your head landing in the lap of a very confused and surprised Brady.
“Protect me.” You order, grabbing the younger Tkachuk brother’s bicep as Matt leaned over the back of the couch, his curls wild and grin wicked. For a second, there was a softness in his eyes that made your heart skip a beat, but then he was back to being smug.
“Brady can’t stop me.” Matt teased, leaning against the back of the couch. Brady didn’t comment, though he rolled his eyes at his brother. It was an argument that had been going on for a decade or so—which brother was stronger? And though they wrestled from time to time, Brady being victorious more often than he used to be, you knew they would never actually fight. You had been there when Keith made them shake heads and promise not to drop the gloves the first time they played each other.
“He’s taller.” You argued, and Matt chuckled as he made his way around the couch. You watched as he lifted your legs, dropping into the spot on the couch they once occupied before resting your limbs across his lap.
“Doesn’t matter.” He replied, giving your shin a squeeze as he spoke. You rolled your eyes, getting comfortable in your spot laying across the Tkachuk brothers and turning to watch the Blues vs. Stars game Brady had put on.
It felt nice to laugh with Matt again. It was as if things were back to normal, and you tried to ignore the funny fluttering feeling in your stomach as his thumbs brushed back and forth along your legs. You hated it, because it was Matt, and you had long since declared that you couldn’t stand him. And yet, there you were, melting under his touch.
“Oh, come on, you’re not going to attack her?” Taryn complained as she dropped into the free chair on the other side of the room. You stuck your tongue out at her, smiling at the sound of Matt’s chuckles. You were going to make a comment about how she was supposed to be on your side in response, but Brady was faster, and his words—for whatever reason—made any reply die on your tongue.
“It’s because he’s in love with her.”
AND ONE MORE
You hated the fact that you weren’t able to sleep. But even more so, you hated the fact that you knew exactly why you couldn’t get your mind to turn off. You couldn’t stop thinking about how sweet Matt had been earlier in the day, and though you knew he always had a soft spot for his sister, for some reason this time it was hitting you differently. Plus Taryn and Brady’s ‘he’s in love with you’s were bouncing around your head.
Finally, after what felt like the hundredth time you had tossed around under the covers, you sat up and snagged your phone off of the nightstand. You sat up, unlocking your phone and opening messages and before you could really think about stopping yourself you typed out a text and sent it.
Only after the message was sent and you couldn’t do anything about it, did you reread what you said and check the time. You couldn’t help but cringe at the one in the morning ‘hey, are you up?’ text that seemingly glared back at you. But then the three dots appeared that signaled that he was typing, and you quickly slid out of the conversation so he wouldn’t think you were waiting for his text. You were, and though he responded within a minute, you didn’t want to give his ego that extra boost.
matthew: usually I’m the one that sends that text
You couldn’t help but roll your eyes, having expected him to say something along those lines. You had practically handed that joke to him. Before you could type out a reply telling him to forget about it, your phone buzzed again with another text.
matthew: front door is unlocked, meet in the basement for a movie?
He was giving you a choice. You could go to bed and pretend this never happened and continue to tell everyone around you that the only thing you felt for Matt was annoyance. But you didn’t. You knew that you might regret it, but you slipped out of bed and tugged on a pair of leggings and a hoodie over your sleepshirt. Shoving on a pair of shoes, you tip-toed outside and to the house next door. It felt a little ridiculous, you were an adult, sneaking around to visit a boy like a teenager. But, you were quiet, and made sure you didn’t make any noise as you slipped down the stairs.
“Why am I sneaking around here like we’re fourteen again?” You teased as soon as you saw Matt already on the couch as he flipped through movie options. For a reason unbeknownst to you, your heart skipped a beat in your chest and your breathing stuttered as you cataloged just how attractive he looked in something as casual as a hoodie and sweats, how suddenly you wanted to run your fingers through his curls that definitely needed a hair treatment.
“I don’t want my family to know you’re here because then I’d have to share.” He teased, snapping you out of your thoughts and opening his arms to silently ask you to cuddle him. You hesitated for a moment, because that was not something you usually did except for maybe when you were three, but decided to throw caution to the wind and curled yourself into his side, your head resting on his shoulder. Besides, you didn’t usually text him at one in the morning either, so precedent was already out the window.
As soon as you settled into him, he draped the blanket that had been folded over the back of the couch over both of your legs. You blushed at the thoughtful action, but tried to hide the flush of your cheeks by staring straight ahead at the television.
“What are we watching?” You found your voice after a moment. When Matt didn’t respond right away, you turned to face him to find him already watching, a small smile on his face and a gentle look in his eyes. For the second time that night, you felt your breath catch in your throat, and it was only the surprised look on your face that had him snapping out of it.
“Oh, uh, you can pick.” He handed the remote to you, and you raised a brow at his odd behavior. You reached a hand up, pressing the back of your hand to his forehead as if to check his temperature with a confused look on your face.
“Are you feeling okay? You must be sick, if you’re letting someone else choose the movie.” You teased, grinning when Matt laughed, swatting your hand away and tugging you closer all in the same movement.
“I’ve been thinking—” He started, but after having grown up with hockey players, you were quick to think up a chirp.
“Are you sure you’re okay then?” You teased, enjoying the warm feeling you got when you heard his laugh. He had your back pressed to his front, so you were facing the television and couldn’t see whatever the look on his face was.
“Would you just let me talk for a minute?” He chuckled and you felt the vibrations in his chest from where you were cuddled against him. And though he was teasing you, there was a softness to his tone that had you nodding, still facing forward. “I kinda sucked when we were teenagers.” He confessed, and you couldn’t help but laugh at him. Though, holding true to your word, you stayed quiet and let him talk. “I was a preteen boy that didn’t know how to act around you and ended up making an idiot of myself.” You knew there probably was a deeper meaning to his words, but you weren’t ready to dive into that and he kept going. “And then we were fifteen and you were in love or whatever with Tommy Banner and I was jealous. And then you broke up but I had to go away for hockey and I don’t regret that, but I do regret not making things better with you before I left.”
His confession hung in the air for a moment as you processed his words. He threw a lot of information at you at once, and you cringed momentarily at the memory of your first ‘serious’ relationship.
See, the thing was, as much as you talked up your annoyance at Matthew, he had always been your person. You fake married the guy for a reason, even if you didn’t really know the implications of your actions way back then. You knew what marriage looked like from your parents and Matt’s, and you wanted that for yourself. You wanted that with Matt. He was your first real crush, and those never really go away. Or at least, yours didn’t.
But once you were teenagers, you stopped pining after your neighbor, a seemingly unattainable goal, and started hanging out with other people. You and Matt started to drift, and then eventually his teasing comments always seemed to be directed towards whatever guy you were seeing, thus making you grow contempt for him.
But now, he was showing his softer side, and those feelings from when you were younger resurfaced as he confessed that he felt the same. You couldn’t deny that you felt something when his hand brushed against you or when he grinned at you—no matter how self-satisfied he looked.
Suddenly you became aware that you had been silent for a moment too long, and you sat up straighter and turned to face Matt. He was studying you, and for the first time in as long as you could remember—except maybe that one time in eighth grade when he asked you to go to the school dance with him because he wanted to make his mom happy—he looked unsure of himself. It was an emotion that didn’t sit right on his face, and as often as you complained about his teasing, you much preferred his shit-eating grin.
“It’s your turn to talk now.” He joked, trying to lighten the mood but only succeeding partly since the breathy chuckle he gave at the end told you he was nervous.
Before you could help yourself, you had cupped his face with both your hands and pulled him forward to connect your lips to his. It took him a second to relax under your touch, but as soon as he realized what was happening, he grabbed your elbow to hold you in place.
When you felt his tongue swipe at your lips you knew you had to pull away before you got too caught up in him, which you knew you would, and you separated. His grin was wide, a little smug like usual, but mostly he was looking adoringly at you.
“I thought you hated me?” He teased, because it’s Matt and of course he would. You rolled your eyes, willing to admit that you had set him up with that one.
“Don’t push your luck, Tkachuk.” You pecked his lips once more, wondering why you had waited so long to do so. If he had been telling the truth, and you knew he was, then he had been crushing on you as long as you had been on him.
“Yes ma’am.” He joked, mock saluting while leaning towards you to chase after your lips for another kiss. You complied, but then pressed a hand on his chest to lean back enough to give him a serious look.
“And if this is going to work, you have to stop being such a pest all the time. Tone it down a bit.” He nodded, grin widening at the mention of your relationship moving past the night. You smiled at him, leaning up to give him one more kiss before settling back into his side. “And I still get to pick the movie.”
Matt chuckled, but didn’t argue. Instead, he settled for pressing a kiss to the top of your head. He let this arm fall from around your shoulders to your waist, and you knew without looking at him that he was wearing a satisfied grin.
“Who’s going to tell our moms that they were right about us?” He spoke up after a moment, and you chuckled. You were as stubborn as Matt was, and neither of you were too excited to admit to anyone that you had been wrong about the fact that you’d end up with each other. You were even certain that Brady, Keith, and Taryn had a running bet about when you and Matt would get together.
As it turns out, neither of you would have to, because you fell asleep together on the couch and Chantal was the first to find you cuddled into her son's chest.
Just like she knew you always would.

Let It Snow | William Nylander
Summary Request:
alternatively, our flights get cancel and we’re two strangers who rent the last available car together (it might be a little dangerous but we’re living on the edge)
and
we always carpool home for the holidays from college but a storm hit and now we’re taking the last room at the local b&b
and
we don’t know each other that well but i found out that you’ve never been sledding skating and feel like it’s my personal mission to change that
Words: 10k (I’m SORRY) Note: So, a few things: I wrote most of this when I was either drunk or sick, so excuse any grammar/spelling mistakes. Second of all, you guys wanted one long thing instead of parts, so here’s 10k of word vomit. Third of all, this is cliche central, and I’m not even sorry. And lastly, I know Will’s family doesn’t live in Calgary anymore but I very well couldn’t have them drive to Sweden.
---
“I hate snow.”
It’s meant to be mumbled under your breath, for nobody to hear but you; you didn’t even really mean to say it out loud, but it kinda slipped.
You really hate snow.
The guy that’s sitting opposite you looks up. So far, he’s been engulfed in his phone, but now there’s an interested look on his face as he takes you in.
“Why?” he asks.
As if that’s a totally normal thing to ask a complete stranger in the middle or a crowded airport.
You shoot him a dirty look, take a sip of your coffee before answering him, your voice deadpan. “Have you looked around you?”
The guy looks, as if he actually hadn’t noticed before that the airport around him has been getting busier and busier, the people there more annoyed and miserable looking by the second.
“Oh,” he says.
Yeah, oh.
You huff and return your attention to the announcement board again, hoping the message is going to magically change.
It doesn’t. Flight delayed, it says.
“Are you going to Calgary too?” the guy asks.
Now it’s not really his fault: he hasn’t personally caused a huge snow storm to hit Toronto and he’s probably just trying to be nice, but you’re already in a bad mood.
So you snap: “No, I’m just sitting here for shits and giggles.”
“Never mind,” the guy mutters, and his eyes fix on his phone again.
Great, now you feel like shit about that.
However, the universe needs to give you a break. This has literally been the worst week of your life and it’s only Thursday: the only thing that has pulled you through so far is knowing you’re going to see your dad, and now it’s looking like that might be going up in flames.
“Excuse me, may I please have your attention,” a voice sounds over the speaker at your gate, and you perk up in your seat. “We regret to inform you that, due to the upcoming snow storm, all air traffic in this area has been cancelled until further notice. Your flight will not depart today. For more information, you may contact the information desk.”
“Fuck.”
The guy opposite you raises an eyebrow. “If you don’t want people to start a conversation with you, you might want to stop talking to yourself.”
He stands up leisurely, as if the cancelled flight is no bother to him at all, and grabs his suitcase. He points to the board, where it now says Flight cancelled instead of Flight delayed – fucking fantastic – and motions at it, as if to say “what can you do”.
“How are you so chill about this?” It’s more that you’re wondering out loud than actually wanting an answer, but of course the guy grabs the opportunity.
“Well, it’s still four days to Christmas, and Calgary isn’t on another continent. It sucks that there won’t be any flights anytime soon, but you can’t change the weather.” He smiles. “I actually love snow, personally. And a little snow has never stopped me before. So I’m gonna rent a car and drive to Calgary.”
You stare at him. “Drive? To Calgary? That’s insane.”
“I mean, not as insane as spending Christmas away from my family,” the guy reasons, and….
He might have a point. You could stay here, and be miserable alone, or you could drive to Calgary and spend time with your dad like you planned. You could be enjoyed your dad’s pancakes, drinking hot chocolate by the fire place watching Elf, within a mere 40 hours, if you put the gas pedal down.
It’s, objectively, insane.
“I’m gonna rent a car too.”
“Great,” the guy says, jovially. “We can walk together then!”
And that was not really your plan, but to be fair, you don’t really know where you’re supposed to go to rent a car and this guy is walking as if he does this every day, so you dutifully follow him.
You take this time to look him over; he looks funny, in sweatpants with white sneakers – in the snow! - and a hoodie with a coat. He has a beanie on and there’s a few blond streaks of hair escaping from under it. He’s wearing thick black framed glasses. The suitcase he has with him has the Gucci logo on it, and you find yourself wondering if it’s real.
The guy is dressed like he’s either super rich but doesn’t care, or is slightly blind and got a 13 year old high school boy to pick out his clothing at a weird second hand shop.
“What’s your name?” the guy asks, and you frown.
“Why do you care? I wasn’t aware we were going to become best friends in the time it takes to walk to the rental car booth.”
“Nice to meet you,” he says, remaining completely unbothered as if you didn’t just snap at him. “I’m Will.” He glances over at you, seemingly amused. “It’s just a cancelled plane, you know. Not the end of the world.”
“It’s not just about the plane.” You almost tell him about the week you’ve had, but you decide it’s not worth the trouble. After all, you’re just going to rent a car and then you’re going your separate ways, and you’ll never see him again.
That’s the plan, at least. But it wouldn’t be this time in your life if your plan didn’t get ruined.
“I’m sorry, miss, that was the last car we have available,” the woman behind the computer says, right after she’s handed Will some keys. “Everyone is trying to get outta here by car, now that the planes aren’t going.”
You nearly, nearly, start to cry.
“What do you mean the last car? Surely you have a car somewhere,” you beg. “Any car. A bike. I don’t care. I have to get to Calgary for Christmas, you don’t understand…”
“I understand,” the lady interrupts, the friendly facade sliding off her face. “Unfortunately, I cannot help you. Have a good day.”
Have a good day?
“Look, lady…”
You’re about to yell at her some more when you feel someone tap your shoulder. Of course, it’s Will, beaming down at you with the keys to your last option in his hand.
“Yelling at her won’t work, you know. It’s not gonna make you feel better or stop you from being in a mood.”
Something inside you snaps.
“In a mood? You wanna know why I’m in such a mood, Will? I’m in a mood because this Monday, I got told my residency at the hospital I work at might not be available to me next year, because they’re cutting personnel at the department. On Tuesday, I ran my legs out of my body for 15 hours before they told me that I shouldn’t come back after Christmas. On Wednesday, my boyfriend of almost a year broke up with me because he’s looking for different things in life, whatever the fuck that means. And the only, only thing I was looking forward to was seeing my dad again, and now this stupid snow has ruined that for me as well. So excuse my mood, but I will yell at whoever I want to!”
Will blinks at you, then raises an eyebrow. “Feel better?”
Slowly, you exhale through your nose. You do, actually, feel better, and Will seems to know that because he’s grinning.
“If you’re done yelling, I was gonna ask you…” he trails, “do you want a lift?”
 ---
Arguably, this is a bad idea. You don’t even know this guy. He could be literally anyone.
“You could be a serial killer,” you tell him, putting on your seatbelt and sinking into the passenger’s seat. “You could drive me out of the city, murder me, dismember my corpse and leave me in the woods.”
“Hmm,” Will hums, as he starts the car. “I could, but that would massively delay my arrival time.”
You kick up your feet on the dash and play with the radio; the only songs you’re getting are Christmas songs, and that’s just not the right mood. Of course, as soon as you settle on some station that’s not playing Christmas music, Will frowns.
“Do you hate Christmas? Cause if you’re the Grinch, I’m gonna have to kick you out now.”
You look out the window; Toronto traffic is bad as always and you’re standing still barely out of the airport.
“I’m not the Grinch. I just don’t love Christmas.”
“How?” Will exclaims. “Christmas is the best holiday of the year!”
“I prefer Halloween,” you say, and Will rolls his eyes.
“And I’m the serial killer.”
“Christmas is overrated. I don’t care for trees in my house, creating a mess, Christmas movies are cheesy, Christmas songs are objectively bad and everyone is just stressed around Christmas time, trying to find gifts and decorate and wear stupid sweaters and go to parties with people they don’t like.”
You don’t tell him that you also don’t like Christmas because when your mom left, she said she would send you a Christmas gift.
As if that made it okay for a mother to leave her 12 year old daughter behind.
“Grinch,” Will mutters under his breath. You reach out and smack his arm, and he yelps in surprise. “Hey, don’t hit the driver, we could crash!”
“We’re literally standing still.”
“I could accidentally press the gas!”
“Then you’d be an idiot!”
You sigh and drop your head against the headrest, staring out of the window at all the headlights surrounding you.
It’s gonna be a long trip.
--
For the first few hours of the drive, it turns out the not be the worst. First, you and Will talk about your families a little: he’s got four siblings and his parents are still “very grossly in love” (his words) and you tell him that you’ve got just your dad and grandma left.
You don’t tell him what happened with your mom and he doesn’t ask, which is probably good judgement from his side.
Most of the time, however, you nap and Will drives or you drive and Will sleeps; you both decided that you want to get to Calgary as fast as you can, and not stopping is the way to do that.
It feels like it’s been days, but in reality you’ve only been driving for about 8 hours when Will stretches beside you and yawns.
“We should stop for gas,” he says, “and get me at least two liters of coffee to inject into my veins.”
“Probably a bad idea,” you deadpan. “That volume of liquid into your system would probably kill you instantly, and if it didn’t, the caffeine would give you a heart attack. Also, if you have to pee in an hour I’ll kill you.”
Will grins. “No good outcome possible for me, then, huh?” He points out the window. “Gas station.”
While you’re driving down the lane, he turns to look at you.
“You’re a nurse,” he says, and you frown.
“Yeah, I told you that.”
“I know, but like, you’re an actual nurse. I didn’t think about what that meant. But that’s really cool.”
You sigh. “Well, yeah, but if I don’t find another residency I’m gonna be half a nurse. And that won’t pay the bills.”
“You’ll find one,” Will says, easily enough, as if it’s a mere fact, and for the first time since you got the news, you feel some of the anxiety in your stomach settle.
It’s probably strange, that the fact that this guy, who you have only spent one day with, can tell you it’s gonna be fine and you believe it.
Maybe it’s because he seems truly genuine in his conviction. Maybe it’s because you’re just that desperate.
“Coffee?” Will asks, and you shake yourself out of your thoughts.
“I’ll go get it, you fill the tank,” you say, because you really want to stretch your legs. You spend your time wandering the little shop, getting two large coffees and also a few snacks for the road – what else is there to do in a car but eat and nap – and when you finally reemerge, Will is talking to someone next to the car.
“So awesome to meet you, dude, huge fan,” the man says. You watch as Will scribbles something on a napkin with a pen.
“Anytime. Sorry I don’t have paper.” Will smiles at the man politely as he hands him the napkin.
“No problem!” The man seems very excited about the napkin, and as he walks back to his car, he looks at Will again over his shoulder and waves. Will waves back, then turns to you and makes grabby hands for the coffee.
“Gimme!”
“What was that?” you frown, holding the coffee out of his reach. “Who was that?”
“A guy,” Will deadpans, “and a napkin. Coffee, please?”
You don’t hand it to him but he somehow manages to snatch it out of your hands; he’s faster than you’d think he’d be, and he’s back in the car before you can ask again.
Luckily, he’s stuck with you in this car for a while.
“That wasn’t just a guy,” you say, stubbornly. “He was really excited to see you. Does he know you?”
“I don’t know him,” Will answers, and that’s about the best deflecting you’ve ever heard.
“Not what I asked.”
Will sighs. “Fine,” he grumbles. “Do you watch hockey?”
“Hockey?” you repeat dumbfoundedly. “Like, where people skate after a piece of rubber? No, why?”
“But you know hockey is a pretty big deal in the city, yeah?”
You don’t know why Will is pressing the issue; you’re more interested to find out who the man is, but Will seems very intent on this line of conversation, so you decide to let him get away with it for now.
“Yeah, my boyf… ex boyfriend is a big Maple Leafs fan.”
Will snorts, but before you can ask what he means by that, he points to your phone, that’s laying in your lap.
“Google Maple Leafs number 88.”
“Why, is he hot?” you tease, but you do as he says.
William Nylander, your screen tells you, and beside it is a picture of Will.
“Kinda,” Will says blankly.
You look at Will, and then at your screen. Then back at Will. “That’s you,” you bring out, and Will chuckles.
“Well, yes. Does that explain enough to you?”
And it does. You might not watch hockey – you don’t really watch sports anyway – but you know from your ex how big a deal it is to some people, and you can imagine what it must be like to be a Leafs player living in Toronto.
You also remember your ex screaming at the television screen.
“Rough season so far, huh?” you say. “That why you wanna go to Calgary so badly?”
Will smiles, but it doesn’t fully reach his eyes. “Yeah, kinda. I mean, new coach, new opportunity, I’m excited, it’s just…” He pauses, seems to ponder his answer. It doesn’t sound like a rehearsed media answer, when he finally speaks. “I really need that new start, but I need a little break to empty my mind a bit, first. Put it into perspective, I guess. My dad is really good at helping with that, and so is my brother. Alex plays in the NHL too, and my dad used to. It’s… They know what it’s like, but they’re not on my team, so they offer more of an outside view.”
“You can tell me?” you offer. “I don’t know shit about hockey, so I’ve got an outside view.”
Will is laughing, then, and his eyes are twinkling and the car feels strangely small, suddenly.
“What do you do when you suck at your job for a while, and everyone loses their faith in you, and then you get better but nobody believes in you anymore?”
For the heaviness of the question, his tone is light, and he’s tapping his fingers on the steering wheel in beat with the music, as if he asked about your holiday plans.
You think of your mom.
“When I was little, I used to patch up my dolls with plasters and tell my mom I wanted to be a nurse. She said I couldn’t because I fainted at the sight of blood.” You shrug. “You just have to show them, I guess.”
Will nods slowly, then breaks into a smile. “Did you really faint at the sight of blood?”
“Shut up,” you chide, and the mood is lifted. It’s getting dark outside and you know you’ll have to start napping soon if you wanna take over driving in two hours, but for now you’re perfectly happy listening to Will’s chatter and the soft rumble of the engine in the background, as the car speeds down the highway, getting a little closer to Calgary with every passing minute.
---
Your eyes flutter open to darkness around you, and the car sitting in the parking lot of a gas station.
You turn just enough to see Will: he’s behind the wheel, eyes closed, his mouth slightly agape as his head hangs back.
The car is surrounded by snow: white flurries of it floating down to the ground, hitting the car.
For a second, you wonder why you’re not cold. Then you catch sight of Will’s coat, draped over your legs and stomach. You can’t help but smile at it, and then you close your eyes again.
The situation feels safely serene and safe, and you might as well take advantage of that and get some more sleep.
---
When you wake up, it’s to the sound of Christmas music coming from the speakers, Willy’s voice singing along.
“Not the time for Christmas carols,” you groan, and Will laughs.
“It’s always time for Christmas carols, Y/N,” he chides. You hear rustling, and you finally open your eyes.
“I stopped for a few hours,” Will says, “just to get some sleep. But we’re up and running again.”
Ah, that explains the scene you woke up yesterday. You glance at the clock: 7am. The sun is slowly starting to rise.
“It’s too early for you to be this happy,” you grumble. You haven’t had any coffee yet and that means you’re really not in the mood to have Will radiating energy around you.
“How are you not this happy?” Will asks. “Look outside!”
Outside is the road, but you understand what he means. Everything is covered by a thick layer of snow.
“It’s… white,” you say, because that’s about as far as you’re getting.
“It’s beautiful!” Will’s eyes are lit up with excitement.
“You’re insane,” you state, because that has been proven by this exchange.
“No I’m not! Snow is amazing. It’s beautiful, and it’s fun. Everything gets better in winter.”
You crank up the heat in the car and rub the sleep out of your eyes.
“Everything does not get better in winter,” you frown. “First of all, it’s cold. Everything is slippery because of the frost, the snow turns to yellow mush within a few hours. You have to shovel the driveway.”
“Or you could build snowmen with it. You can go skating on the ponds. Have snowball fights.”
You snort. “Snowball fights? What are we, 12?”
Will’s eyes widen slightly. “You’re never too old for a good snowball fight.” His voice is fond as he continues. “I play in the snow with my younger siblings every winter when I’m home. That’s like, the best part of Christmas.”
And, well…
“I can kinda get that, in concept,” you say softly. “There was never really anyone to play with me, I guess.”
Will’s eyes are a little sad as he glances over at you, but he doesn’t say anything. You appreciate that: you’re not ready to share anything more and it’s like he senses that. Instead, he changes the subject.
“Hey, have you ever been skating?”
“Nope,” you say, and the grin Willy shoots you is a little wicked.
“We’re changing that today.”
---
What Will means, apparently, is that it’s a good idea when you’re halfway between Toronto and Calgary to stop in a small little town and find an ice rink.
“This is insane,” you protest. “We’re losing time!”
“We’ve got 48 hours til Christmas,” Will shrugs, “and only an 18 hour drive left. Come on, after this we’ll drive straight through. It’ll be fun.” His eyes are shining and you can literally feel the excitement buzzing off of him, and, well…
Skating did always seem like fun to you. When you were younger, you asked your dad to take you once, but renting skates costs money so it never happened. You remember the disappointment in your dad’s eyes as he had to tell you no, so you didn’t dare ask again.
“I’ll buy you hot chocolate after,” Will coaxes. You don’t understand why he wants to go that badly: he spends most of his days on the ice, anyway, surely he’d be happy for a break.
“Fine,” you grumble, and you can’t help but laugh at the smug look on Willy’s face as he pulls the car to the side of the road.
The rink is small and filled with people. There’s a lot of small children that are skating behind little chairs, and you can picture yourself being there too.
“I’m gonna be so much worse than them,” you whine, at the same moment one of the kids falls onto the ice. A woman helps the little girl up and she goes right back at it.
You don’t think you’re gonna be that brave.
“Oh, shush, I’m not gonna let you fall,” says Will, and you try to ignore the butterflies in your stomach.
This whole situation is so freaking cliche, and you are not going to fall for it.
You rent skates for you and Will brings his own, because of course he brought skates in his suitcase. You’re struggling with the laces on the bench next to the rink, mostly to stall for some time; your heart is beating fast in your throat and your hands are a little clammy.
“Need some help with those?” Will is sitting sideways on the bench, and he’s grinning at you amused while you struggle. Feeling a little bold, you swing your leg into his lap.
You can tell he wasn’t expecting it because his eyes widen slightly, but then the grin only broadens and he starts carefully lacing up your skates. You watch as his fingers work the laces expertly – it’s clear that he’s done this a million times before – and then, his hand curls around your ankle.
“Other one,” he orders, and you switch legs.
Finally, the skates are on and Will hops to his feet, extending his hand and helping you to your feet. You’re already wobbling and you’re not even on this ice yet.
“If I break my leg, I can’t drive,” you say, mostly because the thought pops into your head.
Will rolls his eyes. “You’re not gonna break your leg.”
“If I hit my head and have a concussion, I can’t drive either.”
“Y/N.” Will’s voice is firm enough that you look up at him. He’s frowning. “You’re not gonna break anything, or hit anything, or fall. If you really don’t want to do this, we can leave now, but if there’s any part of you that agrees that this could be kinda fun, I promise you I’ve got you.” His eyes are a little shiny as he adds: “Trust me?”
And it’s stupid, you know it is, because you barely know Will. You’re pretty sure you’d have found out if he truly was a serial killer or any other type of psycho, but you can’t be sure he’s not irresponsible – although he did pull over in the snow – or prove that he’s trustworthy in any way.
And yet…
“I trust you,” you say then, and the blinding smile that crosses Will’s face is worth the fear in your heart when you place your first foot on the ice.
You can feel it slipping right away, but Will literally hops on the ice next to you, two feet planted firmly on the slippery surface, and places his hands on your hips, steadying your waist. In a reflex, your hands curls around his biceps, and once again you are reminded that holy shit, he’s a professional athlete.
“Wow, easy,” Will hums. He slowly guides you further away from the door, and your other foot adds to your first, and then you’re gliding.
You can’t call it skating: Will is moving backwards and pulling you with him, but you’re not necessarily moving on your own.
The first round goes like that, and then you decide to be brave and start moving your feet.
To be fair, Will keeps his promise. He never leaves your side, his hand firmly on your lower back even when you do start skating yourself, ready to catch you whenever you stumble – which is a lot.
“I’m doing it,” you yelp excitedly, when he finally lets his hand hover a little away from you. “I’m skating!”
Will laughs. “Proud of you, babe.”
And it’s probably just something he says; he probably calls a lot of people babe, it probably means nothing, and yet…
“Help,” you manage to squeak, and then your arms are waving in the air and your feet are slipping from under you and you try to maintain your balance, but you can pinpoint the second it’s a lost cause.
For a split second you’re plummeting towards the ice, but then two arms are wrapped around your waist and you just kinda… hang there.
“Thanks,” you say dryly. You’re hanging in Will’s arms as he’s hysterically cackling out laughter above you. It takes him a few seconds to compose himself and pull you up.
“Majestic,” he giggles, and he tightens his grip on your waist when you slap him in the chest.
“Rude,” you grumble, but you can’t help the smile that’s tugging at the edges of your lips.
It’s weird, but suddenly you notice how close he is, and when his eyes travel to your lips the smile falls from his face and you can tell he noticed too.
You stare at him, and it’s like the air is charged with something; your heart is beating in your throat and you swear he’s moving closer.
Oh, you think, we’re gonna kiss.
Strangely enough, the thought doesn’t send panic to your throat the way it did when your ex kissed you the first time, the way it always has when someone kissed you. Instead, it’s like everything inside of you goes calm and quiet.
You want him to kiss you. And it’s a little scary how not scary that is.
You’re interrupted by a small voice.
“Mister Nylander?”
Will startles, yank back fast enough that you nearly tumble straight back down to the ice, but one firm hand on your waist keeps you standing. He turns around then, to face the little girl that spoke: she can’t be more than five years old and is wearing a helmet with a cage, holding a hockey stick in her hands and staring at Will with wide, starstruck eyes.
He bends down into a squat – on skates, literally, how – and smiles at the girl.
“Hi, yes, that’s me. You can call me Willy, though. What’s your name?”
“Amanda,” the girl beams. “Can I get your autograph, mister Willy?”
“Sure, kiddo,” Willy says. “How about I bring my friend here to the safety of the ground and I shoot some pucks with you, huh?”
Amanda looks like someone just offered her the entire world and everything in it. “Please,” she says, and Will quickly guides you towards the side of the rink.
“I won’t be long,” he promises, and he almost looks apologetic, which…
Which is ridiculous. Because you can tell that him just being here made that little girl’s day, and you think of the things you wanted as a little girl and the heroes you never got to meet, and…
“Take all the time in the world, please,” you say. “I’ll go get myself that hot chocolate.”
For two hours you sit at the side watching Will with the kids. Somehow after Amanda more and more kids appeared and now he’s created somewhat of an impromptu hockey team because they’re all playing and the adults cleared the rink.
It’s entertaining, to watch Will with the kids. He’s a good teacher, and you can see them hitting the net more and more as time passes on, and he clearly makes it fun: they’re all laughing and screaming and at one point, a few of them tackle Will to the ice, where he rolls around and pretends to be unable to get up, yet hops to his feet the second the kids get distracted.
It’s insane, how comfortably he moves around. Like, you knew this, because he’s a professional hockey player, of course he can skate, but you didn’t really think anything of it until you see it in action. He’s obviously not even trying to do anything fancy, and he’s probably not trying to be fast either, but he is, and he stops without problem and turns in any direction and even jumps over a puck, at some point.
You can’t lie. It’s kinda hot. But then, you’ve always had a thing for people who were clearly good at something.
For example, your ex was a really good painter. He was also really good at being a lying, cheating bastard.
Before you can go too far down that rabbit hole, there’s commotion on the rink, someone crying and then Will’s voice, too loud: “What happened?”
When you look up he’s kneeling in front of a little boy, who’s crying and staring at his hand.
You jump up, worrying, but Will has already lifted to kid in his arms and is skating towards you now, with big strides.
“He took a skate to the hand, we’re gonna need some bandages,” he says, and a parent yells something about getting a first aid kit while Will puts the kid on his lap on the bench. “Can you look at him?” he asks you, worry evident in his voice even though he’s clearly trying to remain calm. He’s a little pale, but you don’t have time to deal with that right now.
“Hey, buddy,” you coo at the kid, kneeling in front of him, placing your hand on Will’s knee to steady yourself. “What’s your name?”
“Tim,” the kid cries. “My hand hurts!”
“I know it does, Tim. But the good news is that we can fix it,” you promise him, examining the hand. It doesn’t look too bad: there’s a cut, but not deep enough to perforate anything more than flesh, so you’re not too worried.
The first aid kit arrives and so does Timmy’s dad, who doesn’t seem too bothered. “He falls all the time,” he says, “that’s what hockey is, isn’t it?” He preens at Will, who dutifully ignores him in order to talk to Timmy in a low voice.
You wrap up Timmy’s hand and tell him to take it easy for a few days, and then before you know it you’re in the car and Will is holding the steering wheel so tight his knuckles are turning white.
“Do you want me to drive?” you ask tentatively. There’s no answer, but Will isn’t turning on the car. “He’s gonna be okay, you know.” Silence. Another try. “It’s not your fault.”
“I just can’t believe,” Will starts, but he seems to choke on the last word and lets the sentence die, drops his head and inhales sharply. It takes a while, but finally he speaks, a little more composed. “I hate when parents tell their kids that hockey is about pain and sacrifice. It can be, sometimes, but it shouldn’t be, not for a little kid. It should be about fun, and learning skill, and being with teammates, and loving it. It shouldn’t be about falling and injuries.”
He sounds so frustrated that it tugs at your heart strings, and for a split second you allow yourself to wonder what Will was told by his dad, when he was a kid himself.
“He wasn’t even trying to soothe him,” Willy bites. “He was too busy fawning over the presence of a professional hockey player, and I don’t… I don’t wanna be the person these idiots believe I am.”
“And you’re not,” you blurt out. “Will, these kids had so much fun with you.”
Will smiles, but it doesn’t reach his eyes. “I just… Me and my brother, we always had fun skating. My dad told us it was important to always have fun. But I’ve seen it happen to friends. They were so passionate about hockey, but their parents pushed them, wanted them to be better too quick and told them to suck it up when the skates hurt their feet and it just fizzled out, you know? Until one day it wasn’t any fun and they quit.”
“It’s a shame,” you echo. “But your dad…?”
“He was hard on us, sure.” Will shrugs, smiles for real this time. “Pushed us to be better. But he always made it fun.” He turns to you. “Your dad… He stood behind your dreams?”
You remember you told him your mom didn’t think you could be a nurse, and you laugh. “The blood thing, you mean? Yeah, he didn’t agree with my mom. He always told me I could be whatever I wanted to be, and if I decided I wanted to be something else, I could be that, too. He’s always been there for me.” You shrug. “I’m lucky to have him. My mom… She left when I was 12. And I…”
You stop, for a second, wondering if you’re really gonna tell this to a complete stranger. But the thing is, Will doesn’t feel like a complete stranger anymore. Talking to him feels more comfortable than talking to most of your friends, and you can tell he really cares about what you’re saying, and you just, you want to tell him, so you do.
“I don’t like Christmas because my mom left right before Christmas, and she said: ‘I might not see you for a while, honey, but I’ll send you a Christmas gift.’ She didn’t, and I never saw her again.”
When you glance at Will, he’s frowning, a deep crease edged into his forehead. “That’s messed up.”
“Yeah, but, it was a long time ago. I’m mostly over it, I just never learned to love Christmas the way most kids do, I guess. My dad tried to make it fun for me, but it was always the reminder, you know, that I didn’t have a mom and other kids did.” You laugh, a little bitterly. “And then this year my ex-boyfriend dumped me on the 16th. My mom left me on the 17th. So I guess December is just not a good month for me.”
“Your ex is an asshole.” Will says it with such force, gritting his teeth, that you can’t help but reach over and put your hand on his knee.
“It’s okay,” you muse, and the tension leaves Will’s shoulders as he carefully wraps your hand in his.
His hand is warm and a little rough and there’s something hammering in your chest, and you wonder how it’s possible that you met him two days ago and he’s already making you feel more than your ex-boyfriend ever had.
You guess you never really liked that guy as much as you told yourself you did.
“It’s not,” he says, but he doesn’t so upset anymore. “And if he was here, I’d punch him in the face. But I’m glad to see you didn’t let him hurt you too much.” Will grins. “And now you’ve been skating, so, like, fuck him.”
“Fuck him,” you echo, and Will starts the car.
18 hours to go. And then you’re in Calgary, and you’re gonna see your dad, and you’ll probably never see Will again.
For some reason that thought leaves a sinking feeling in your chest.
---
“Psst.” You groan as someone softly tugs your arm. You try to turn around, but there’s something digging in your back and you can’t quite get there. The tugging gets more persistent. “Hey, Y/N.”
“What?” you grumble, finally forcing yourself to open your eyes, and it’s only when you see Will’s face in front of you that you realize you’re not in your bed. You’re in a car, it’s pitch dark outside, and you’re standing in front of a lit up building.
“Snow storm is getting really, really bad,” Will says. “We have to stop for the night. It’s not safe to keep driving.”
You’re about to tell him to stop being such a baby, and you’ll drive, no problem, when you risk a glance out the window and see… nothing.
Literally, almost nothing. Just a big building, and some lights that could be from streetlights or UFOs, for all you know, because there’s a big blanket of white covering your sight. Snowflakes are streaming down in a curtain, and you can hear the wind howl around the car.
Okay, yeah, maybe it is unsafe to drive.
“Where are we?”
“Hotel,” Will says. “I checked, only hotel within 10 minutes of the highway. Pray that they have a room for us.”
He leaves you in the seat to wake up a bit more, and goes to get your luggage; he swings your bag over his shoulder and hauls his suitcase out of the trunk, and finally opens your door.
“Come on.”
You grab his hand and let him pull you out of the car, although you walk in front of him to enter the hotel. The woman behind the desk looks up as you open the door.
“Please close that behind you,” she says, friendly enough, “I swear if that cold comes in I might freeze, here.”
“Hi,” you say to her, “I know, it’s bad, right? We were hoping you have two rooms available for us, so we can escape the storm?”
The woman types something on her computer, then frowns. “I’m sorry, it’s very busy at the moment. Lots of people stopping in from the highway. I have one room left, if you’d like? Double bed.”
Oh, fuck. You’re not sure if you’ve quite wrapped your head around in, when Will chimes in next to you.
“Cool, we’ll take it.”
“We…” you start protesting, but Will raises an eyebrow and looks at you with so much attitude that it shuts you up.
“Would you rather freeze to death in a car?” he asks pointedly. “I’ll take the couch or the floor, or whatever, chill. I promise I won’t murder you in your sleep.”
Getting murdered is not what you’re worried about, to be honest. You’re worried that sharing a hotel room with Will is just gonna make these feelings in the pit of your stomach worse.
But there’s not really another option.
“Fine. We’ll take it.”
“You know,” Will chirps, when you’ve got the keycard and he’s taking the luggage up the stairs, “there’s a lot of girls that would kill to be forced to share a room with me.”
“That’s because they’ve only looked at your face, and don’t know your personality,” you drawl, and you know you’ve made a mistake when Will’s face lights up.
“You think I’ve got a pretty face?”
“Not what I said,” you answer quickly; too quickly, because Will is looking way too smug as he takes the keycard out of your hand and opens the hotel room door.
The room itself is nothing special. It’s small, but the bed looks comfortable and it’s warm, so you’ll take it.
“Shotgun on the bathroom,” you say as soon as you get in, and Will rolls his eyes but dutifully flops on the bed and starts typing on his phone while you find your toothbrush and disappear to the bathroom.
When you walk out, Will is laying sprawled over the bed, although he’s luckily still on top of the duvets. His hoodie has ridden up a bit and his sweatpants are – dangerously – low on his hips, so there’s a strip of skin showing.
Your mouth goes funnily dry, all of a sudden.
The thing is. You might not have wanted to be stuck in a hotel room with a guy you met at the airport only 2 days prior, but if it had to happen, Will is not a bad guy to be stuck with. He’s, objectively, very hot – you’re not blind – and he’s funny, and easy to talk to, and he’s been nothing but nice, even when you were a teeny tiny bit rude to him at the airport.
Did you mention he’s very hot?
“I’m gonna shower,” he says, jumping up from the bed.
While he’s doing that, you lay in bed and scroll through Instagram on your phone. Maybe you stalk Will on Instagram, only for a little bit, and you find a picture of him with his siblings that’s so cute it has you smiling at your phone.
“What are you smiling at?” Will’s voice surprises you so much that you drop your phone on your face with a yelp, and the sound of his laughter rings in your ears as you bury your red hot face into the pillow.
You hadn’t even heard him open the bathroom door again. Luckily, you don’t think he saw, but you lock your phone just in case.
Then, you look up, and if you thought you couldn’t be any redder in the face, boy were you wrong.
Because Will is wearing boxers, and nothing else. Now, you think to yourself, as you glance at him before shamefully returning your gaze to your hands, if you had a body like that, maybe you’d be more keen on showing it off too, but…
“You’re gonna be cold,” you tell him, and you can hear, more than see, his eye roll as he says:
“Okay, mom.” Then, he opens the closet and takes another duvet out. “I’ll be fine, I have this.” He grins a little cheekily, as if he fully knows what he’s doing to you. “Normally I sleep naked, but…”
“But not today,” you squeak, and he’s laughing again.
Not wanting to give him the satisfaction of letting him know that he’s getting to you, you throw the second pillow at his head and then roll to your side.
“Goodnight, Will.”
“Goodnight,” he answers softly. You listen as he potters around the room; probably tries to get his ‘bed’ for tonight as comfortable as possible. Finally, the lights click off.
You can’t sleep. You know it the second the lights are off, and Will’s breathing evens out. Your mind is going a million miles per hour and there’s so many things that happened, that you’re going to have to overthink before you can sleep. What’s not helping, either, is the fact that Will keeps tossing and turning.
You’re starting to feel a bit bad. You’re in a bed that’s big enough for two – maybe even three, it’s that big – and Will is laying on a cold, hard floor, with just one duvet and a pillow.
Outside, the wind is howling, and you know if you looked out the window the entire world would be covered in white. The room is warm enough, but you picture how there must be a draft, so close to the floor, and suddenly you can’t take it anymore.
It’s selfish, to make him sleep on the floor all because you’re worried about wanting things you can’t have.
“This is stupid,” you say, sitting up. “You should just sleep in the bed.”
For a second, it’s quiet. When Will speaks, he sounds unsure. “Are you sure? I mean, the floor isn’t great, but I don’t mind, I promise, if you’d rather not…”
“Look, we don’t have to, like, cuddle, or anything.” You can feel yourself blush but in the darkness of the room, there’s no way Will can see, so you keep talking. “You stay on your side, I’ll stay on my side, and it’s basically the same distance as having you on the floor. Just, the floor is cold, and uncomfortable, and there’s no need to…”
“Okay,” Will cuts you off, and he jumps up, duvet in hand. He’s grinning as he slides into the bed, curling the duvet around himself. “You don’t have to convince me, I was just being a gentleman.”
You snort. “Don’t do it again, it freaks me out.”
“You drive tomorrow, then,” Will hums, and it already feels better, to hear his voice right next to you instead of from somewhere at your feet. He sounds better, too; lighter, and more comfortable. “Hey, Y/N?”
“Hmm?” you answer, finally closing your eyes.
“If I had to cross the country in a Kia during a snow storm with anyone from that airport, I’m glad it’s you.”
You think of what you were thinking before, and smile.
“Me too, Willy, me too.”
It’s quiet again, and Will’s breathing starts evening out. For some reason, you still can’t calm down: you try to match your breathing to his, but it’s too shallow and you can feel your heart beating in your chest.
“You’re fidgeting,” Will says then, his voice loud in the quiet room. Only then do you notice that you have been twisting the duvet between your fingers time and time again. Will goes to lay on his stomach and turns his head to you. “You okay? I can sleep on the f…”
“It’s not you,” you interrupt him. It is, of course, but not in the way he thinks.
“Okay,” Will says slowly. “Then what?” Before you can answer he reaches out and slowly wraps his hand around yours, causing your fingers to dis-attach from the duvet.
And, the thing is…
You could tell him to mind his business. You could tell him a lie, or something that’s kinda true but not the real reason.
Tomorrow, you’ll be in Calgary. On your dad’s couch, drinking hot chocolate. And Will is gonna be in his own house. And then after Christmas, you’re both flying back to Toronto, but you’re not stupid. Will is a famous, and really attractive, athlete. You just got out of another failed relationship. You’re not good at relationships, turn out; you don’t even know if you really believe in love, anymore, don’t know if you even think it’s worth it to try.
But right now, you’re here, and he’s here, and you swear you’re not imagining the way he looks at you, sometimes.
You’ve had to deal with cancelled planes, problems at work, a dumb ex boyfriend, and this stupid everlasting snow, ruining your life one day at a time. So, you might as well give yourself this one thing that you want.
“Or, it is you,” you say, and you can feel Will stiffen beside you. “But it’s not that I don’t want you in this bed with me. In fact, it’s kinda the opposite.”
You can feel your cheeks flush: you’re not good at this, don’t really know what to say.
But then Willy grins and suddenly he rolls around, his body now hovering over you as he pushes himself up on his forearms.
“So does that mean I finally get to kiss you?” he hums, and you answer by pressing your lips against his.
---
Hours later, you’re both naked, a mess of tangled limbs in sheets, and Will’s chest is rising and falling with every peaceful breath. You close your eyes and bury your face in his neck.
Outside, it snows, and it snows, and it snows.
---
You wish you could enjoy the next 10 hours.
First, you spend 2 hours getting showered and ready – it would’ve been a lot shorter if Will hadn’t slipped in the shower with you, so it’s his fault if you’re late – and then you have breakfast at the hotel while Will tells you more about his family.
His face lights up when he tell you which Christmas gifts he’s got for his siblings and it’s adorable.
Then, you drive. The final 6 hour drive, and it flies by so fast you would’ve believed it if someone said it was just 2. You drive the first few hours and then Will takes over for the last part, and you chat the whole way there.
At some point, Will starts singing along to Christmas songs, and you don’t even change the channel.
“Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow,” Will croons; you can’t help but laugh and then you’re both laughing and singing along at the top of your lungs.
You wish it never had to end.
“So,” says Will, “this is your street, huh?”
You decided he would drop you off and take care of returning the rental car, and you’re almost regretting that decision cause you would’ve liked those 20 extra minutes with him. However, you know that that is, objectively, insane, so you ignore the knives that are being ran through your heart when Will parks the car on the curb.
“Home, at last,” he says, softly. He’s not smiling anymore. “So, when we get back to Toronto, we should…”
“Don’t,” you interrupt softly. “We both know this is where it ends for us.”
At this, Will frowns. “It doesn’t have to.”
“Yes, it does.” You swallow heavily, try to get rid of the lump in your throat. It doesn’t feel right but it is, and you need to let it end here before you end up with hopes that will crash and burn and expectations that will never be met.
“What if I don’t want it to?” he asks quietly.
As much as Will might believe he wants to see you again – and you don’t doubt that he’s being truthful about that - it’s just not realistic.
People don’t meet the love of their life in an airport after a cancelled flight, don’t live together forever after long a cross-country drive, don’t live happily ever after after a snowed in hotel.
People do leave their husbands and kids the week before Christmas, they do cheat on you, they do break your heart.
Snow might make things seem more magical, but after all, it’s just frozen water.
“But I want that.”
Will’s face falls, his eyes sad and honest, but he nods slowly. “Okay,” he says. “Thanks for the drive, then.”
His voice is distant, now, cold and impersonal: you know you deserve it but it hurts, anyway, and you scurry out of the car, take your suitcase out of the trunk.
You’re standing next to the car, ready to walk down the driveway, when the window opens.
Will’s head pops out, and he sends you what you think is meant to be a smile. It’s not a real one, and he still mostly just looks sad, but he’s trying, you think.
“I know December is a hard month for you, but I truly do hope it’s gonna get better. Merry Christmas, Y/N.”
The window closes and the car drives off, and something inside of you breaks.
“Merry Christmas, Will,” you whisper with tears in your eyes. You could’ve stood there for hours, but the front door opens.
“Y/N?” your dad’s voice calls. “I’m so glad you made it, you won’t believe the snow we’ve had…”
---
There’s a blanket on your lap as well as Snuggles – your dad’s cat – and you’re drinking tea while Elf plays on the television.
Your dad has been talking excitedly all through dinner, but now it’s quiet as he watches the movie. He seems happy, light, and it soothes something inside of you.
Sometimes you worry about him.
It’s not until the end credits roll that your dad turns to you. “Are you gonna tell me what’s wrong?” he asks tentatively, and that’s all that you need to hear in order to break into tears. “Oh, honey,” he sighs, then takes your hand in his. “What happened?”
You have no idea where to start.
“Dad,” you whisper, “do you think you can die from a broken heart?”
Your dad smiles sadly, shakes his head. “If you could, I would’ve been gone by now, probably,” he jokes, but it doesn’t land. “Is this about that boyfriend of yours?”
And, well, the funny thing is, you haven’t told your dad about the break up, but it doesn’t even matter. Your heart is broken and it has nothing to do with your ex.
So you tell him about Will. You tell him about how you almost weren’t here, tell him about cancelled planes and one lone rental car, about how he went from Will to William Nylander right back to Will, about coffee breaks and sleeping on the side of the road and skating and the little kid who hurt his hand, about snow storms and a hotel room with one bed – not about anything else from that night, though – and finally you tell him about goodbye.
When it’s all said and done, your dad frowns. “You keep saying it had to end. But honey, it sounds like you really like this guy.”
You do, oh God, you do.
“Why would it have to end?”
You don’t say anything, but as always, he knows exactly what you mean.
“Just because it ended for your mom and I doesn’t mean it always has to end, you know. Sometimes it’s worth to try.” He pats your hand. “I think you should call him.”
And that’s when it hits you. It doesn’t really matter if you’d wanna call him.
You don’t even have his phone number.
---
“Y/N! Patient in room 11!” your colleague yells. “I’m going to the kid in room 4 if you need me!”
You sigh and throw down your clipboard. You have no idea why the hospital is so busy; it’s December 28th, which promises a disaster on New Years Eve, which is usually your busiest day of the year.
Fireworks, man.
You’ve been on your feet for 9 hours but you don’t even really mind. Just the thrill of working in a new hospital has been keeping you going; it might have something to do with the fact that this hospital will let you finish your residency, too. They called you the day after Christmas.
Some might call it somewhat of a Christmas miracle.
“I’m on it,” you call back, then start making your way to room 11. You nearly bump into the doctor you’re working with today, and she halts you by putting a hand on your arm.
“Are you a Leafs fan?” she asks.
It might be the weirdest thing someone has randomly asked you; the conversations you have had with this woman have ranged from “can you get me some blood from the vomiting boy” and “in what room do I find the catheters” and now she’s asking you about your sports teams?
Your heart clenches tightly as you think of Will.
“Not really,” you answers. That seems to be the right answer because the doctor smiles and waves towards the room, telling you to enter. You’re still confused by the whole exchange when you walk into the room and nearly trip over your own feet.
“Oh,” Will says slowly, “that’s quite a coincidence.”
It’s like your tongue has grown two sizes; you can’t speak, can’t even begin to think of what words to say, when suddenly you notice something.
“What the hell happened to you?”
There’s blood all over the hand he’s clutching to his chest, and his face is white as a ghost. Next to him is an equally pale guy wearing a Leafs sweater, who is staring at you with wide eyes.
“Uhm, I fell,” Will says sheepishly. “Turns out snow is quite slippery.”
It hasn’t snowed in Toronto in days.
“He didn’t fall in the snow,” the guy next to him grumbles. “I tried to wrestle the remote out of his hand and he fell into the Christmas tree and sliced his hand open with an ornament.”
“And Kappy has just promised to clean everything up, right, Kap?” Will asks with a sly smirk. Some of the color is returning to his face, which is more than you can say for his friend Kappy.
“Okay, well, let me have a look,” you mutter, and you gather some of your supplies before sitting next to the bed.
If you try very hard to avoid Will’s eyes and focus completely on the gash on his hand, that’s between you and the hospital room.
“So, first aid, huh?” Will asks. “Found a new job? Told you.” He sounds stupidly smug, so you raise your eyebrow and press the gauze to the wound. He inhales sharply. “That’s mean.”
“I’m trying to clean it,” you tell him sternly. “Sit still. God, Timmy was a better patient.”
“Hey,” Will protests, offended. “I’m a perfect patient.”
When you see how deep the wound is, you wonder how it’s possible that Will is still so chatty, and you also feel a little nauseous; it’s always different when it’s someone you care about.
“I’m gonna go get doctor Summers,” you say, and your voice is a little unsteady.
You’re probably imagining the edge of disappointment to Will’s voice when he says: “Yeah, okay.”
While doctor Summers examines Will’s hand, his eyes are fixed on you, and you keep yours fixed on your shoes. There’s so much you want to say to him, so much you want to do, but this is not the time or the place and also you have no idea how to start a conversation like that.
You tune back into the here and now when you hear the word “surgery.”
“It’s not a real surgery,” doctor Summers says, “I just think we need to set a bone and we also need to stitch up the muscles.”
Will is a little pale again as he nods.
You get send away to prepare the necessities for the procedure and when you come back, Will’s friend is gone.
“He’s gonna pick me up when I’m done,” says Will, who sees you looking. “Are you gonna… Are you gonna be here, while she does it?”
“Nope,” you answer, and this time you’re definitely not imagining the way his face falls. “Are you gonna get in trouble with the team for this?”
Will pulls a face. “I’ll probably get a stern talking to from Kyle.” When he sees your expression, he laughs. “My boss.” He sighs, looks out the window.
It’s started snowing, again, because apparently the universe loves taunting you.
“You know what the worst thing is? I ruined my tree.”
“That’s definitely not the worst part,” you roll your eyes. “It’s after Christmas, you should’ve probably taken it down anyway.”
“I couldn’t take it down yet,” says Will, his face completely serious, “there’s still one Christmas miracle I’m waiting for.”
He’s staring at you intently and you can feel your heart beating in your throat.
There’s no way he means…
But what if there is?
You make a decision then, and when Will is getting his hand worked on in a different room you run to the cafeteria.
“Hey,” you yell at the lady behind the counter. “I’m gonna borrow this for a second!”
She looks at you like you’re a crazy person and you can’t blame her: you’re literally standing in your scrubs, screaming at her from the middle of the cafeteria after having just yanked a tiny Christmas tree from the table.
“Okay?” she yells back, and it sounds more like a question than a blessing, but you take it and run anyway.
Room 11 is still empty; although Will’s coat is still lying on the bed, so he must be coming back. You take the tiny tree and put it on the bed side table, plug it in.
There’s only about 10 lights in the tree, but when you flick off the big lights, it still looks pretty Christmassy.
And so, you wait.
To say you’re nervous would be an understatement; there’s every possibility in the world that Will has changed his mind since you last saw each other, and the last thing he wants is you confessing how much you like him in a hospital room after just having destroyed his hand, but you have to try.
Every time you think about bailing, you hear your dad’s voice in your head.
Sometimes it’s worth it to try.
This is one of those times.
“No strenuous activities, take it easy…” Finally you hear doctor Summers voice and you stand up.
The door opens tauntingly slowly, and there is Will. At first, his eyes widen as they catch the Christmas tree, and then his head swivels around and he sees you; a slow smile spreads across his face.
“A Christmas tree?” he asks.
“Well,” you smile, “you did say you wanted a Christmas miracle…”
“But you don’t like Christmas,” Will points out.
And that’s true, but…
You take a step closer and Will raises an eyebrow, questioning but not looking like he wants to run away.
“I don’t,” you admit. “I didn’t. But then something happened… Or, well, someone happened. And now I’m thinking that I might have to give Christmas a chance.” You’re standing right in front of Will, now, and he had all the time in the world to back off but he didn’t. Instead, he’s looking at you with an amused expression on his face, the corners of his mouth curled into a tentative smile.
“I think there might be a few things I have to give a chance,” you finish.
“God,” Will breathes. “I really hope you mean us.”
Instead of answering, you kiss him.
It feels somewhat familiar and yet as if you’ve never been kissed before: there’s fireworks in your stomach and everything feels warm and fuzzy, like nothing matters except for the feeling of Will’s lips on your lips, his chest pressed against yours.
“Y/N!” someone yells from the hallway, and you reluctantly pull away.
“I have to get back to work…”
“Okay,” Will whispers, pecks you cheek quickly. “But we’ll talk…”
“I’m done with work in an hour,” you interrupt.
Will nods. “I’ll tell Kappy he doesn’t have to pick me up.” He grins. “Unless you’d rather not drive in the snow?”
“Shut up,” you tell him, but it’s with nothing but fondness.
You’re already running to the hallway, ready to see the next patient, when you hear Will yell after you: “You said you hate snow!”
And that’s kinda true, but…
Sometimes, even if it messes up your plane, or gets you stuck in a snowstorm, or makes you fall on your ass…
You just have to let it snow.

How to get gung-ho about fitness
Tumblr media
Fortes fortuna adiuvat!
This Latin saying equates to "fortune favours the strong." As I create these words, twenty-two years ago today I fulfilled an amazing, fantastic and also stunning woman and boldly asked her to dinner. To my wonderful lot of money, she accepted.
I state that to mention that life could be a series of journeys, missed out on opportunities or both. I intend to take you on an experience. Count on me that you don't intend to miss this. Like any kind of journey worth taking it needs preparing, preparation and a positive attitude. This journey could last the remainder of your days.
Getting began with your adventure
Many individuals get bogged down in the finer information of health and fitness as well as miss the possibility to completely embrace the bigger photo. They count just how numerous calories their underclothing can shed, believe that consuming Cook Boyardee could create fat burning, get on the most up to date fitness bandwagon or spend way too much time eager the numbers on the scale to move.
They are missing the larger image, that makes all that micro trash stated over pointless. If you are having a hard time with sticking to an exercise program and also consuming a healthy diet plan, it's time to remove your mind of the minutia and start to visualize just how points could be different. Envision just what it resembles bolt out of bed in the morning distressed to work out. Assume of just how complimentary you could be if you didn't continually crave high-calorie scrap food. Consider the life you would certainly lead if you were healthy and balanced, strong, energetic and also delighted with the way you look.
The remainder of your days can be really outstanding if you prepare to obtain gung-ho.
I know some people consider me a little a nutbag when it comes to health and fitness. The grapevine feedback I have actually listened to from some individuals about talks I've provided use words like "hardcore" and "intense" and "actually gung-ho." I'll confess that I'm a bursting-with-energy as well as excited-about-healthy-living sort of man, however I certainly was not always in this manner. I utilized to be an obese couch potato who hated the suggestion of workout-- an enjoyable mid-day for me was downing draft beer and also raking through Doritos while viewing a Celebrity Trek marathon.
It took a progressive mindshift for me to go from doughnut-scarfing lazy-bones to diet-conscious exercise warrior. I went from despising healthy living, to hardly tolerating it, to assuming it did not entirely suck, to really inclining it-- then to can not picture living otherwise due to the fact that it's so freakin' awesome!
Hint: You do not go from hate to freakin' amazing over night. The path is progressive and loaded with infant actions, as well as road blocks. The point about child steps is that they still obtain you there faster compared to you may believe. Consider how fast the last couple of years have zipped and also exactly what the following few years could keep in store for you. Here are my pointers for your path to gung ho:
1. Life without limitations That header up there appears like component of a tacky quote somebody would certainly post right into Facebook, due to the fact that we all have our limits. Lord understands gravitational force has limited some of my ambitions in the past. Exactly what I'm discussing are those self-imposed limitations that you can regulate: points like time, initiative and mindset.
In regards to state of mind, when you see a super-fit, healthy and balanced as well as pleased lady and assume that you could never be like that, ask yourself this inquiry: Why not?
Twenty years ago I never ever dreamed I would certainly be the method I am today. I didn't even like people like the one I've ended up being. The initial step is to accept that you could set enthusiastic yet still attainable goals for on your own, then start a long-term procedure of attaining them. Don't hindering on your own prior to you also start by having an adverse mindset. Favorable thinking is needed.
2. Discover an exercise that defines you Or two or three.
I recognize some ladies that feel that yoga becomes part of that they are, and also they are great at it. They examine it. They believe regarding it. They push themselves to obtain better as well as far better. It has become part of their personality. Among their good friends, their name practically ends up being identified with it. Other women I understand are hardcore joggers, and I know a few that are running yogis.
These females have actually found their true exercise interest. It doesn't have to be the very best muscle-builder or calorie-burner-- it simply needs to be that thing that you like and also you endeavour to obtain far better and much better at. For me, those defining workouts are weightlifting and running. Every person that recognizes me understands I enjoy these things. They recognize it's a component of that I am.
Experiment to find your exercise Zen, after that make it a component of that you are.
3. Test your limits Now I don't want anybody to injure themselves, which is why I'm a large follower of infant actions. When you give your body time to adapt, it does. I bear in mind when I started running I had all right cardiovascular capacities because of weight-lifting. I had the ability to handle nearly 5K my first time out, as well as I hurt from the eyebrows down for virtually a week afterward. It took a number of aborted efforts to realize that I needed to start with just 1K then include a quarter of a kilometre a week. Now I consistently run 50K a week.
Your mind does not recognize just what your body's limitations are, so you merely require to experiment and also learn. Press out of that convenience zone, and also after that when things obtain comfy, push again. Maintain pushing until you have actually reached that state of awesomeness where others speak about just how gung-ho you are. Deal with a valiant delaying action against age. There will certainly be a lot of time for rest when you're dead.
4. Slowly begin to check out food as fuel as opposed to a source of pleasure Food is the toughest battle since surrendering cookie-dough Haagen-Dazs is challenging. There is a lot enjoyment to be obtained from consuming highly palatable food, it is a dependency that is difficult to break.
And this is why it's important to truly start to see yourself as a workout warrior, because not just do the "really feel excellent" chemicals that you obtain from workout help to change your demand for the "repair" you receive from eating convenience food (exercise, betting, medicines, alcohol as well as unhealthy food all influence the same neuro-chemical reward paths in the mind), however it offers you the chance to begin viewing food from the perspective of fuelling ever before more exercise butt-kickery. When you've got a run, bike ride, hike, Pilates course, weightlifting session and so on intended, you should fuel that with nature-made rocket energy go juice. Not Twinkies.
To wrap up, I'll repeat that this is a really slow-moving procedure, yet you'll hardly notice the time because you'll be enjoying. It doesn't matter how old you are since those days are behind you. You can just reside in the future. Determine just what you desire that future to appear like.
Be vibrant when facing this future, as well as ton of money will favour you.

The reports began filtering in on election night.
At the Southern California offices of the Counsel of American-Islamic Relations, CAIR’s civil rights monitors received their first call within hours of Donald Trump’s victory. A Muslim woman wearing the traditional hijab headscarf reported being refused service at a gas station by an attendant who allegedly announced, “I don’t need to serve you anymore. We’re trying to make America great again.”
And a widely shared Facebook post from friends of a Calgary film producer showed a graphic photo of the man, who was bloodied outside a Santa Monica bar, allegedly for being gay, immediately after watching election returns with a date as raucous patrons shouted to the pair, “We have a new president, faggot!”
The new president’s rhetoric has been implicated in a flurry of incidents throughout the state, dating back to June of 2015, when he first announced his White House bid amid a blare of anti-Mexican and anti-Muslim vitriol, a tone maintained throughout a campaign that, according to CAIR, effectively mainstreamed Islamophobia in the United States.
Balmeet Singh is neither a Muslim nor an immigrant, but a member of Bakersfield’s large Sikh community and sports the full beard and distinctive turban that is mandatory dress for religiously observant Sikh men. He was born in Ohio to South Asian parents and moved with his family to Kern County as a child. During the final stretch of the election campaign, the 31-year-old Bakersfield realtor got a first-hand taste of the fear and public humiliation that an increasing number of Californians are experiencing in the age of Trump.
On the evening of Sept. 30, 2016, Singh was having dinner at a Habit Burger restaurant in a West Park commercial strip mall when he stepped out to a patio dining area to take a phone call from his cousin.
“He turned 14 that day,” Singh recalled in a phone call to Capital & Main. “And so here I am, wishing him a happy birthday, having a long conversation with him, when out of the corner of my eye [I saw] a Caucasian man approach and he started yelling at me, telling me that I was a terrorist, that I was going to blow up the country.”
Confused, Singh said he stared uncomprehendingly as the bearded and tattooed man repeated the words, adding, “I should fucking kill you right now.” Instead, said Singh, the man threw his drink at him, soaking Singh’s turban and clothes as nearby diners watched.
“I felt the adrenaline rush, the fight or flight,” Singh remembered. “I actually told him that I would call the police, and I stepped towards him . . . and had actually dialed 911, and I think that’s why he walked away.”
Fortunately, the cup contained nothing more lethal than a cold beverage, and Singh was able to give the police a description of the assailant along with his vehicle make and license plate number. But it was little consolation, given the shock of what had just happened. Most painful, he said, is the memory of what didn’t happen.
“They just sat there,” Singh said incredulously of the other diners. “I don’t know if this was the bystander effect or what, but none of them said or did anything. . . . That was painful because my cousins were inside the Habit Burger, so I had to walk inside afterwards past all of these people who had just seen what happened. They are talking and laughing and having a good time, and here I am, dripping this liquid and in shock.”
A December report by the Southern Poverty Law Center had California leading the nation in post-election hate incidents, tallying 125 for the state in the month following Nov. 8. The center also recorded a dramatic surge in the number of U.S. anti-Muslim hate groups, which nearly tripled in 2016 over its tally for 2015 — a year that itself saw a 67 percent jump in hate crimes against Muslims across the country.
A CAIR spokesperson told Capital & Main that November and December alone saw reports coming into its office of anti-Muslim incidents in Los Angeles and Orange County roughly triple that of pre-election monthly averages.
Some of those 2016 California incidents include:
A fire that was set to the Islamic Society of the Coachella Valley in December of 2015, for which a Palm Desert man is serving a six-year sentence for perpetrating a hate crime. The incident may have been prompted in response to the mass shooting in San Bernardino that had occurred earlier that month, which was denounced by Donald Trump.
The November murder of Will Sims, a young African-American jazz musician from Oakland, who was shot to death by three white men outside a pool hall in El Sobrante, Contra Costa County, just days after the election, in what police concluded was a hate-related killing.
November letters sent to multiple California mosques threatening genocide against Muslims — while praising Donald Trump.
In December, after a Muslim worshiper was stabbed in a parking lot adjacent to a Simi Valley mosque following Saturday prayers, two Simi Valley men were arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats and committing a hate crime.
More recently, a 30-year-old Davis woman was charged in the January hate-crime vandalism of a mosque in which security cameras captured her smashing windows, vandalizing bicycles and draping bacon — a proscribed food in Islam — on an exterior door handle.
The true numbers are likely higher. According to CAIR, because of the climate of fear surrounding the administration’s ramped up deportations and Trump’s executive order barring refugees and entry by citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries, those most vulnerable to hate violence also tend to be reticent when it comes to reporting incidents to police or speaking to the media.
The man who targeted Balmeet Singh turned out to be 40-year-old David Hook of Bakersfield, who later claimed that he had heard Singh “say something about a bomb” during the cell call and confronted him about it. Hook insisted he had a constitutional right to take direct action against Singh, believing that “If you see something, say something.” The Kern County District Attorney’s office, however, was unconvinced and charged Hook with two hate crime misdemeanors, including one count of interference with the exercise of a civil right and one count of battery. (Attempts to reach Hook for comment were unsuccessful.)
For his part, Singh, who formerly taught special education, thought there was a learning opportunity to be had. Since 9/11, he noted, the country’s Sikh community has increasingly found itself at risk in similarly mistaken and sometimes far more tragic hate attacks. And so Singh arranged with the DA’s office for a 15-minute face-to-face with his attacker, believing that the dialogue and perspective could result in something positive. But Hook was not open to persuasion.
“There was no remorse,” Singh admitted. “He basically told me that he didn’t want to see me again and that he was a military veteran. He said, ‘I have served the country, what have you done?’ He was just yelling this stuff over and over.”
On the positive side, Singh was inundated with hopeful messages on social media, and Bakersfield residents stepped forward with an outpouring of support, including an anonymous delivery of flowers to his realty office with a card that read, “Just remember: Bakersfield is better than this. We’re not all like that.”
Still, the experience has been sobering. Recalling his father, who came to the United States in the 1980s with $200 in his pocket, a medical degree and a desire to have a better life than the one he left behind in India, Singh reflected on the rising levels of fear, mistrust and misunderstanding that he fears have tarnished the American dream.
“Maybe I am a little naive in thinking that every story has a happy ending or thinking that people will change,” he said. “I see what’s happening here and [my father] talks about how America is different from the America that he remembers in the ’80s when he came. It seems that this hatred was maybe not as open — at least on a public level — by politicians and by leaders. It does affect everyone. I was speaking to a schoolteacher here, who said that in his school, kids were walking down the hallway chanting, ‘Build the wall, build the wall!’ These are the values that we are now instilling on our children.”

Yamato Kasukawa | 5 Points You Required to Know Prior To Migrating to Canada
Fancy vehicles, developer clothing, as well as high paying jobs are the amount of individuals in developing nation could think of life in the western component of the world. After all, those that are lucky sufficient to come in to Canada, UNITED STATE, or the U.K. for a new as well as prosperous life, always return home for a see after a couple of years bearing a ton of gifts for the whole household, constructing homes on substantial acres of land, and costs heaps of money that appear to be endless. Yes, the way of livings of those that stay in western nations are very fortunate in numerous manner ins which I can't deny. I ought to understand, I live in Alberta Canada, an oil abundant province where jobs are plenty; wages are high, and also poverty, virtually non-existent.
In addition to staying in what appears to be a life of high-end, there are things all individuals need to be totally aware of before resolving in Canada.
  # 1) WESTERN WAY OF THINKING
Lots of people in developing nation do not have or may not understand credit cards or home mortgages. So, if you recognize or see a person living in a large home or driving a high-end car you can safely make the assumption that they are rich. However, in Canada or UNITED STATE someone driving a glamorous cars and truck and living in a huge attractive house may or may not be rich. If you have good credit history, you are qualified to obtain a mortgage, credit cards, cars and truck leases which essentially indicates the financial institution really owns your vehicle or house as well as you make monthly payments depending how much the funding is. It can take 2-5 years to settle an automobile and 20 plus years for a residence.
  # 2) STANDARD OF LIVES
Staying up to date with the Joneses is a common phrase utilized to define an individual who strives to have what their neighbour has. It is really typical for a household that might make a consolidated annual revenue of $100,000 to be deeply in debt. Most likely, due to the fact that they are living over their methods in order to maintain appearances. A timeless instance of this, is a person I when knew who had an attractive million-dollar house in a top course community. This house was enhanced with sophisticated furniture top to base, big screen TELEVISION, and also she also drove an all new Mercedes. A way of living excellent by lots of, but what many people didn't recognize is she can not afford to pay the electric expense as well as home loan. Does that make good sense to you? So it is important to understand that not everyone is abundant in Canada, our concept of success is impractical and we are creating financial obligation while in quest of treasures.
  # 3) MONEY DOESN'T EXPAND ON TREES
Yamato Kasukawa
In Canada, believe it or otherwise, cash is made from extremely effort, long hours 5 days a week and for numerous even 6 or 7 days a week. There are some people that function 3 jobs just to make ends fulfill. Automation in Canada has created numerous work for skilled workers. However, several extremely educated immigrants are located working such jobs as, abattoirs, taxi drivers, or janitorial tasks that many Canadians think about to be unwanted. These jobs do pay well because no one wishes to do them and also they require very little training. International credentials such as: medical, law, or any other degree gotten in a country outside Canada does not assure you a work in Canada. Your degree, which you strove for, might not be recognized by Canadian requirements. To prevent dissatisfaction it is important to recognize what level of specialist and also scholastic criteria you require to fulfill before you get here.
  # 4) DISCRIMINATION & RACISM
If you are intending to migrate to Canada you need to know that you may face this concern. Some cities are much better than others but right here in Alberta it may be the worst. A recent article in the Calgary Herald exposes Calgary as the hate criminal offense resources of Canada. Growing up as an African Canadian in the 80's, each time when there were couple of black family members I encountered a great deal of concerns with racism. Though there are more visible minorities now, this issue still exists. Just recently I met a guy from Russia who deals with racial slurs daily at his work place, he stated despite the fact that his skin is the same colour as there's they still discriminate against him due to his Russian accent. The reality that discrimination and bigotry can be extremely subtle as well as even non-verbal at times indicates that we require to work hard to confirm ourselves at all times. Minorities are underestimated and also may not have the exact same opportunities as our Canadian counterpart, however we can still call for regard in the work place or in school. The anti-harassment and also discrimination policy is style to sustain us in this regard.
  # 5) ALTER OF A LIFESTYLE
Canadian custom-mades may be various from what your used to, but there are a few custom-mades you may not recognize. For instance, it is traditional to call and also make an appointment to go to somebody at their home, showing up unannounced is considered rude. When you arrive see to it gets on time as Canadians worth preparation, do not fail to remember to eliminate your footwear at the door whatsoever times. Never make a remark about a women's weight if she is over weight, this is thought about extremely rude, you're far better off talking about fat burning as a compliment. In order to ensure an effective social integration try to fraternize individuals beyond your social team. I see a lot of immigrants of all various ethnic culture's have a tendency to only border themselves with those from the same cultural background. I understand that conference with people from the same country you're from is humanity, you have a great deal in common such as: language, culture, or religious beliefs. Yet it is similarly vital to incorporate into culture by not segregating yourself. Spending time with people from o

TSA PreCheck vs. World Entry vs. CLEAR: Value and advantages of every
http://tinyurl.com/yxnd9ov5 John Greim / Getty Pictures Standing in a protracted line on the airport is not any method to begin a trip. And it’s definitely no manner for frequent business travelers to fly. You have probably heard of varied packages that promise to get you thru airport security sooner, and you have most likely endeavored to look into them once you discovered your self making painfully sluggish progress by a TSA checkpoint. Maybe you are studying these phrases whereas standing in an airport safety line proper now! We all know your ache. Right here at CNET, we’re all the time touring to cowl breaking information, conventions or commerce exhibits. And in any case that point within the airport, we have realized a factor or two in regards to the three main choices to shorten the wait: TSA PreCheck, World Entry and CLEAR. So earlier than you’re taking off your footwear and belt and take away your laptop computer and liquids out of your carry-on bag, hold studying to be taught in regards to the prices, software course of and advantages of every.  Now taking part in: Watch this: TSA’s automated safety lanes intention to hurry up vacation… 1:08 The alternatives and opinions under are primarily based on impartial testing by our editors. Word that CNET could get a share of the income for those who purchase or subscribe to something featured on our web site. Journey companies in contrast Our suggestions Detailed examinations of the companies comply with, however here is the specific model. World Entry is the most effective general choice. One CNET author as soon as known as it “the most effective $100 I ever spent” — and the primary time you utilize it, you may agree. World Entry folds in all the benefits of TSA Pre — a lot sooner and fewer invasive TSA safety checks — and provides an specific line by customs and immigration in your manner again to the US from worldwide locations. When you have a passport, that is the one to get.  TSA Pre is the most suitable choice if you do not have a passport. If you happen to solely journey domestically, TSA Pre will make flying a far much less onerous course of. However for those who take even one worldwide journey within the subsequent 5 years, you may kick your self for those who do not pay the $15 additional for World Entry. We do not advocate CLEAR at its present worth. The bottom worth of CLEAR simply feels prohibitive. It is nearly $200 a 12 months, versus simply $20 for World Entry. And that membership charge does not purchase you the faster TSA safety examine, so that you’re most likely nonetheless going to need to put money into World Entry or TSA Pre anyway. With no worth drop or an expanded service tier, CLEAR simply does not appear to be value it. Nonetheless… CLEAR Sports activities is worth it for sports activities followers and concertgoers in sure cities. No, this does not actually have something to do with airports or touring. However the free tier of CLEAR, known as CLEAR Sports activities, provides you with expedited entry into 16 stadiums across the nation. If you happen to reside in one of many cities wherein it is provided — and also you’re OK with the company Clear having your biometric data — this free service is value trying out.  And, as you may suspect: If you happen to’re an actual stickler for privacy, you may need to skip all of these.  Need a deeper dive into every of those? Learn on. TSA PreCheck With greater than 7 million members, TSA PreCheck is the most well-liked of the expedited airport safety screening packages. It is run by the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) and allows you to use a particular TSA PreCheck line on the airport as a substitute of combating your manner by the principle safety checkpoint with everybody else. Along with the shorter line, the screening itself is expedited since you needn’t take away your footwear or laptop computer, amongst different objects, when going by a TSA PreCheck checkpoint. Based on the TSA, 92 % of TSA PreCheck members waited lower than 5 minutes this previous Might. Who’s it for? Air vacationers inside the US. To be eligible, you might want to be a US citizen or a lawful everlasting resident. Additionally, TSA PreCheck members’ children 12 and beneath can undergo the TSA PreCheck line with their mother and father. What does it do? Not solely will the road on the TSA PreCheck probably be shorter than what you may encounter on the common airport safety checkpoint, however you may undergo faster since you will not have to take away your footwear, belt or mild jacket, or take out your laptop computer or liquids. TSA The place can I take advantage of it? At greater than 200 participating US airports and  67 participating airlines throughout the US. What’s the fee? TSA PreCheck prices $85 for 5 years. How do I apply? It is a two-step course of: 1. Fill out an online application and schedule an in-person appointment for a background examine. There are greater than 380 enrollment centers for the in-person interview. In contrast to the early years of this system, they are not all positioned in airports anymore, both. 2. Go to the appointment to get reply questions for the background examine and get fingerprinted. The TSA estimates the net software will take 5 minutes to fill out, and the in-person appointment will take 10 minutes. How does it work? As soon as you have been accepted and paid your $85, you may get a Recognized Traveler Quantity (KTN). Whenever you e book a flight, you should add your KTN to your reservation, which is able to mean you can use the TSA PreCheck lane on the airport. World Entry Global Entry is a no brainer for those who like the thought of TSA PreCheck and journey internationally. Run by the US Customs and Border Safety (CBP), this program contains TSA PreCheck and provides the flexibility to get by customs extra rapidly when coming into the US from journey overseas. Who’s it for? Worldwide vacationers going by air, land or sea. To be eligible, you might want to be a US citizen, a lawful everlasting resident or a citizen of the next international locations: Argentina, Colombia, Germany, India, Panama, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan or the UK. Children will want their very own World Entry membership on the similar price as adults. What does it do? It helps you to skip the lengthy line at customs together with the paperwork and awkward interview with a customs agent when returning to the US. Instead of that disagreeable course of, World Entry members can skip by customs through the use of a self-serve kiosk. And on exit from the US, World Entry additionally contains TSA PreCheck to get you thru airport safety sooner. CBP The place can I take advantage of it? You should use World Entry at dozens of airports within the US, together with Guam, Saipan and Puerto Rico. It is also accessible in some main Canadian airports (Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Winnipeg), in addition to a handful of different worldwide places (Abu Dhabi, Aruba, Bermuda, Dublin, Grand Bahamas, Nassau). Once more, that is along with some great benefits of a full TSA Pre membership, which you need to use at over 200 home US airports.  What’s the fee? World Entry prices $100 for 5 years — solely $three extra per 12 months than TSA PreCheck. How do I apply? Much like TSA PreCheck, you might want to fill out an online application. Begin by making a Trusted Traveler Program account. Then, full the appliance for World Entry (which incorporates the non-refundable $100 charge). As soon as you might be conditionally accepted, schedule an in-person appointment at an enrollment center and move a background examine. To your in-person interview, you will want a sound passport and one different type of identification resembling a driver’s license or ID card. Lawful everlasting residents should current their machine readable everlasting resident card. How does it work? There isn’t any further paperwork wanted past your in any other case unchanged US passport. When you’re accepted, simply search for the devoted World Entry kiosks at customs when coming into the US at collaborating airports. The ATM-style kiosk snaps a photograph and asks you about 5 of the identical type of questions you’d get on hand-written immigration kinds (are you bringing in fruit, are you carrying $10,000 in money) that you simply reply on the touchscreen. If the solutions to these questions is not any, you may hand off the printed receipt to an immigration officer as she or he checks your passport. You might be in your method to the baggage carousels in as little as 2 minutes.  Additionally, you will get a Global Entry ID card, however that is solely wanted for land and sea port entry from Mexico or Canada. (If you happen to’re not conversant in the SENTRI and NEXUS packages associated to crossing to and from these respective international locations, you most likely needn’t fear about this.) CLEAR In contrast to TSA PreCheck and World Entry, CLEAR is run by a non-public firm and never the federal government. It helps you to leap proper to the entrance of the principle safety line or the TSA PreCheck line on the airport. As an alternative of ready in line to indicate your ID and boarding move to the TSA agent, you need to use a CLEAR kiosk to scan your eye and fingerprint after which be escorted on to the entrance of the safety line. You continue to could need to use it together with TSA PreCheck or World Entry as a result of it solely helps you to skip the road — you may nonetheless have to undergo safety by eradicating your footwear, belt, laptops and liquids except you additionally get pleasure from TSA PreCheck advantages. Who’s it for? Air vacationers with eyes and fingers who hate lengthy strains. To be eligible, you should be not less than 18 years outdated and have one in every of these kind of photograph ID: US Driver’s License, US Passport, US Passport Card, US-issued Everlasting Resident Card, State Issued ID or US Navy ID. What does it do? CLEAR helps you to skip the airport safety line, however you may nonetheless have to undergo the common safety screening. It saves you from needing to current your ID and boarding move to a TSA agent after standing within the safety line to take action. As an alternative, you need to use a CLEAR kiosk to scan your iris and fingerprints earlier than a CLEAR worker then escorts you on to the entrance of the road for safety screening. You may have to take off your footwear and belt and take away your laptop computer and liquids out of your carry-on, except you even have TSA PreCheck that expedites the screening course of. CLEAR The place can I take advantage of it? CLEAR is not as widespread as TSA PreCheck or World Entry. It is accessible in a select number of airports as well as a handful of stadiums to get you thru safety and to the sport or live performance sooner. What’s the fee? CLEAR is pricier than TSA PreCheck or World Entry. It prices $179 per 12 months, and you’ll add as much as three members of the family for $50 every per 12 months. Children beneath 18 can use the CLEAR kiosk when touring with a CLEAR member of the family.  Delta members can get a deal on CLEAR. It is free for Diamond Medallion members, $109 a 12 months for Platinum, Gold and Silver Medallion members, and $119 a 12 months for Common SkyMiles members. What’s CLEAR Sports activities? For stadium-entry solely, a CLEAR Sports activities membership is free and allows you to carry one visitor with you thru the CLEAR safety lane. How do I apply? CLEAR is the costliest however best to affix. You fill out an application online after which end the method at an airport or stadium that provides CLEAR. No want for a separate journey to an enrollment heart — you can begin utilizing CLEAR on the identical day you enroll. How does it work? Your iris and fingerprints are scanned once you enroll and linked to your account. You possibly can then use these biometrics to zip by the CLEAR lane at an airport or stadium as a substitute of the common safety line. Safety and privateness issues World Entry and TSA Pre are US authorities packages, whereas CLEAR is a non-public company. However for those who use any of the companies, you may be surrendering numerous private info, together with fingerprints — and your face. Within the case of CLEAR, the company’s website says: “We by no means promote or hire private info. Private info is barely used to supply the companies related to the CLEAR membership.” For World Entry and TSA Pre, you are surrendering that info to the federal authorities. That provides many individuals pause, particularly because the authorities has proven it is no higher than companies at retaining information secure. From the OPM breach to the Shadow Brokers, the feds already had a reasonably dismal repute. And now, US Customs and Border Safety — the very company that administers World Entry — has admitted that traveler photos have been compromised in a cyberattack.  So, sure: None of those methods will likely be comfy for folk who worth privateness. And if any of that makes you uncomfortable, none of those companies are for you. However whereas arguing for a better degree of vacationers’ rights is a worthy debate, it isn’t going to get you thru the safety line any sooner on your subsequent flight. For higher or worse, elevated comfort will imply sacrificing some extent of privateness, not less than to the airways, the governments of the nations you are touring by, and their numerous subcontractors.  Source link

Is this too high for heath insurance or is this how they all are?
I pay 130/month for health insurance through Humana for 1 adult and 2 children, full coverage. I usually have to pay a $20 copay for minor doctor visits. Recently I found out Humana is going to start charging an extra $20/week so it will be $150/week, so about $500-600/month, which is a little more than our mortgage payment. We pay less in groceries every week than the amount it costs us to pay for this insurance and we rarely visit the doctor, maybe twice a year, and the amount that is charged hardly adds up to the amount paid throughout the whole year. It's really ridiculous, in my opinion. I get this insurance through my work. I only have the option to cancel or change things about the insurance twice a year and the time has come up. So I am considering canceling and looking elsewhere for health insurance, or just paying out of pocket because if I cancel that's an extra 150 bucks in the bank. I will still keep my vision and dental. Is this a good idea to cancel? Pros. vs. Cons.? Are there any better health insurance companies I could go with that would charge less in the state of Ohio? Honestly I am considering applying for medicaid because we are struggling. We are behind in several medical bills that the insurance wouldn't cover and they are less than what the insurance company charges us monthly, yet because all our money is spent on the insurance, we can't pay for the actual bills - what's the point in the insurance? Enlighten me someone? I was told once that the two biggest crooks are lawyers and insurance companies and I'm starting to see why.""
Car insurance for another person?
Hey guys, so I'm gonna get a car soon. I turned 18 back in January. My mom is going to buy me a car soon, but only if the insurance isn't that high. So, seeing as I really want the car I have in mind, I need to know some things about car insurance. My mom has gotten into an accident before also, plus the car in mind is a sports car. A Nissan 350z to be exact. So my question is, can I get insurance for that car even though it's under her name? I've never gotten into an accident before, and plan to get my license soon. Thanks!""
Car Insurance problem?
Yesterday my dad was in a car crash but thankfully no injury. The victim who crashed into our car had escaped and dashed off bout 6miles. The point of this story? The victim had stolen a car from a rental place and had been driving really fast probably. Figuring that this guy has no money and insurance, can not pay for the damage of my car. (I had bought it about a year ago, and used car) It seems Like we would have to pay 1mill yen (Japan) for this whole crap. Obviously this does not seem right at all, and should not be paying anything at all! Our insurance covers the accidents we get into, but not the damage of our car. So that means, our insurance doesn't cover it, the victims or the company (toyota) might not be covering it either. This case is rare supposedly and we're still figuring it out. And their on a hunt for this guy so hopefully we'll see what he has. Can you hear me out on this one? Can you give me things that might question this case? thnx a lot""

Driving without Proof of Insurance?
I was recently stopped by a police officer for speeding and when giving him my license and proof of insurance he stated that my insurance had expired. I then received a $550 fine for not having insurance, but not for speeding. I do have insurance, but the proof of insurance is what expired (we searched everywhere and the cards that the insurance agency was supposed to send did not show up). My question, then, is what do I do about this? I was not aware that my proof of insurance had expired (again, not the insurance) and I was freaked out because this is the first time that I have ever gotten pulled over (I'm a college freshman and the car is in my grandmother's name, it was a grad gift) On the ticket do I contest the claim and go to court or do I admit the claim and go to court? What are the possible outcomes or what is most likely to happen?""

Crowdsourced car insurance company? Would you join?
If I were to set-up a crowdsourced car insurance company would you be interested in joining? I appreciate how much money is required when starting a car insurance company but I seriously think that with a concentrated effort and a crowdsourced company then we could beat the large companies at there own game. The way I envisaged it working was that the idea attracts as many people as possible and each person pays a membership fee. In return for the fee the person gets a share in the company with certain voting rights. The share doesnt entitle you to free insurance, but seriously reduced in price. Insurance policies are only available to members, the main benefit being to keep insurance costs down people would hopefully be less likely to claim. When the company generates profits, those profits would go into a pot and at the end of the year the pot would be sent out to members in the form of dividends. Anyone interested?""

The insurance company has gave me a list of 30 cars like mine within a 500 mile radius. They chose two cars out of the 30 to compare my car too. The problem is, there is a huge mileage difference: My car had 130k miles The comparables they used have 45k and 50k miles That's like an 80k difference. They took $2,265 off my ACV just for the difference. Is that fair? I don't get why they didn't just find a car with similar mileage to mine when there were plenty available. Why did they choose the two cars with the lowest mileage and then deduct 2 grand? When they could have easily picked two similar cars with at least 100k miles , and deducted a lot less for the difference.""

request: Can I have prompt #68 w/ Matthew Tkachuk please? Thank you ahead of time!
prompt: “I want you to look at me the way you look at him.” / number 68 off of this list with Matthew Tkachuk.
summary: Matt keeps trying to set you up with random guys, until one day when he realizes he doesn’t want you going out with anyone else but him.
warnings: drinking, swearing
word count: 2.8k
Tumblr media
You weren’t sure why you were such good friends with Calgary’s resident nuisance Matthew Tkachuk. He was nothing but trouble, that much was obvious by the way he was search the bar, trying to find an eligible guy for you.
It all started by a slip of your tongue. You hadn’t meant to spur him on, and if you had known just the lengths he would go to in order to prove you wrong you would have never agreed to see a movie with him. You would have avoided having him ask you about your love life and you definitely would not have told him you thought he couldn’t set you up with a guy you actually liked.
Because he took it as a challenge, and now every time you went out with him and other friends to bars or clubs he would constantly point out guys he thought you would like. Unsurprisingly, none of the matches stuck.
“What about him?” Matt elbowed your side from his spot beside you in a booth. You had been busy talking to his teammate and your mutual friend Johnny, but the conversation was quickly dropped, much to your chagrin.
See, the reason none of Matt’s matches seemed to work was because you were more or less in love with him. He may be a pest, but you found his teasing endearing most of the time. Not to mention, with his gorgeous eyes and wild curls, he wasn’t half bad to look at. But he couldn’t know this, not when it was so obvious that he wasn’t interested.
So you let him play matchmaker, enjoying just a little bit how frustrated he got when you were completely uninterested in any of the guys.
Your gaze followed the direction that Matt’s finger was pointed to find someone so completely not your type. You roll your eyes, ignoring the curly haired boy beside you in a bid to get him to stop.
Of course, that never deterred him.
“Come on, why not?” He urged, and Johnny excused himself. Johnny was the only person that knew of your feelings, and you hadn't even meant to tell him. It was a night similar to this one and you had one too many drinks, and Johnny had just happened to be there when you spotted Matt talking to some gorgeous girl that had you feeling green with envy. You spilled your guts then, and now you desperately wanted to follow Johnny, but by the attractive, albeit shit-eating, grin on Matt’s face  had you rooted in your spot. Once more, you roll your eyes at him. It was a typical action when you were around him, so he wasn’t fazed in the slightest.
“Not my type.” You offered lamely, taking a sip of your drink to make sure you wouldn’t spill the truth. You were a few drinks in and sometimes that meant you let secrets spill easy—case in point, Johnny. But this was one you had been harboring for a while and had gotten pretty decent at hiding—though you could never be too careful.
“You say that about every guy. I’m starting to think you don’t actually have a type.” Matt sighed, clearly exasperated with your answer.
“Maybe I don’t want to hook up with some random guy in a bar.” You shrugged. Matt screwed his face up at that and you giggled.
“You don’t have to hook up with him. Just talk to him.” You shook your head, knowing there was no point of arguing him with. He was stubborn and though you usually didn't mind it, you were getting tired of having to tell him you weren’t interested in other guys while avoiding the fact that you were interested in him.
“Trust me, Matty. It’s one in the morning at a bar, that guy just wants to hook up.”
The next time you saw Matt, it had been at your apartment. It was tradition that before he left for road trips, he would come to yours and you would cook him dinner. It started one night when he came over, complaining that he didn’t have any food at his place. You had already been in the process of cooking for yourself, so you invited him to stay. Calgary had won nearly every game on the trip, and he came home insisting their string of good games had been due to your cooking.
“Back off, Tkachuk.” You teased, watching as he eyed the chicken in the pan. He laughed, pinching your side as he moved past you to return to his seat at the island. You focused on cutting the vegetables to try and cover up the fact this touch—no matter how obnoxious it was—had you blushing.
“I can’t help it, I’m starving.” You rolled your eyes, but nonetheless smiled. He was a pest, you were well aware of it, but you loved him for it.
“It’ll be better when it’s actually done.” You chided. After that, he let you cook in peace, and as he typically did, he set plates out. You ate in the living room, the show you had been watching as of late on, and Matt only slightly complained when he didn't know what was happening.
“You’re the best cook I know.” Matt complimented, setting his plate on the coffee table and you mimicked his actions, him leaning into the back of the couch and you resting against the armrest. You stretched your legs out across his lap, trying to ignore the way your heart skipped a beat when his hands fell atop your shins. It wasn't an unfamiliar position for the two of you to be in, but it never failed to fluster you.
“Even better than your mother?” You teased, glancing between him and the television. He wasn't paying attention, though he usually didn’t when he wasn’t the one to pick the show, but what was odd was that he was looking at you. He laughed, though you could tell that he was a bit distraction. The weight of his gaze fell heavy on you, and you couldn't help but turn to face him. When you met his stare, it felt as if something shifted between the two of you.
“My mom’s is the best, but you’re like my home away from home.” He said, and there was a charge in the air that had your cheeks burning red and you forced your attention back the the show. You weren’t sure where his confession had come from, as Matt wasn’t one to get serious often. But the way he was dragging his thumb over the exposed skin of your legs, and the fact that his gaze hadn’t left the side of your head had you letting yourself believe that his words hinted at something more. “When’s the last time you went on a date?”
And just like that, the moment was over. He was back to his matchmaker ways, and you sighed. You stood up, collecting the dirty plates and heading back into your kitchen to start cleaning up.
“Why do you care, Matty?” You argued, having heard him called your name as he followed you.
“Because I don’t want you to be lonely when I’m gone.”
“So you want me to go on a date?” You were starting to get annoyed, you had let yourself get your hopes up in the moment and suddenly you were faced with reality once more. The reality where you and Matt were nothing more than friends and he wanted to set you up with up someone else.
“I mean, kinda?” He sounded conflicted, which was new. You turned to face him, his brows were tugged together as he studied you. His hands were on his hips as he looked down at you, and you suddenly became self-conscious under his gaze. “I don't know.”
This wasn't your Matthew. He was always so self-assured, cocky on the ice and borderline off of it. The young man standing in your kitchen seemed so unsure of himself, as if he was looking for the answer to an unasked question in you.
“I uh, I’ve got to get up early tomorrow.” This time, it was your turn to look at the other with confusion. You nodded, the look of total puzzlement on your face as you watched Matt head for the door. You barely were able to tell him goodbye before he was out of your apartment, the door shutting behind him and leaving you alone and confused.
You hadn’t gotten any answers as to his unusual behavior and he had been back from his road trip for a few days. Though, by the second game while he was away, he had called you late one night to catch up on your day. He seemed a little more reserved, which had you wondering if you had done something wrong. Thinking that you hadn't gotten so frustrated at him for trying to set you up. Since then, you had been searching for your matchmaking best friend, because even if you hated his set ups, at least he was by your side.
You were supposed to go out with the boys, because even if Matt was being weird, you were still friends with all of them. So after their game had ended, you waited a while before heading down the hallway by the locker rooms to wait for them to finish up post-game interviews and take their much needed showers.
Johnny was the first to exit, and upon spotting you, made a bee-line to get to you. He had an exasperated look on his face, and considering you hadn’t seen him since before this last road trip, you weren't sure what was up. You were about to question him, but all you were able to do was raise your brow in confusion before he spoke.
“You have to tell Matt you like him back.” You eyes bulged out of your head and you swatted his arm and shushed him, the totality of his words not hitting you yet.
“People could hear you!” You hissed, pulling him by his bicep out of the crowd, most of which were giving you looks not from what Johnny had said, but from how you reacted. “And what do you mean back?”
“He’s been nonstop talking about you since the road trip.” Johnny sounded exhausted, and if your mind hadn't been racing a million miles a minute about the implications of his statement, you would've sympathized with him about Matt’s ability to be a pest. “Something about how he went for dinner at yours and it just kind of hit him that he’s always been in love with you.”
“Johnny, what the fuck!” You shrieked. It was nearly too much information to receive at once, that your best friend, that you were in love with, returned your feelings. Johnny laughed at you, the sound of your exclamation drew the attention of Elias and Matt, who emerged from the locker room at the same time.
When you met Matt’s gaze, you felt your stomach do flips. You smiled awkwardly at him, cheeks a little flustered when suddenly an idea came to you. Matt had been acting different around you because he realized he had feelings for you, and as a punishment for making you second guess yourself, you were going to mess with him.
“You promise you’re telling the truth?” You whispered to Johnny, not only because you needed just that little bit extra affirmation that your feelings were returned and also because you didn't want Matt to hear you.
“I wouldn't lie to you, especially not about something like this.” Johnny replied, talking in the same low volume you did. You grinned widely at this, turning back to Matt, cataloging how he was smiling softly at you. Usually, after he played as good as he had tonight, his smile would be smug. You wanted your old Matt back, and you had a plan to get him back.
“You know what, Matty?” You said with a grin as he and Elias were within earshot. He beamed at the nickname, and you had used it enough that his teammates had given up chirping him about it. “I’m going to let you play matchmaker tonight. Find me a good one.” You pat his bicep as you walked past him, pretending to ignore the way his smile faltered at your comment or at the fact that Johnny and Elias both started to laugh at the flabbergasted look on his face.
Tonight was going to be fun.
As soon as you had gotten to the bar, you had broken off from the group to use the bathroom, and then you made your way to the bar. You weren’t alone long, because a tall, unfamiliar, figure stood next to your stool.
He was handsome, in the typical way that was almost boring to you. He didn't have the curly hair that Matt did, or the smug grin that somehow was endearing despite the fact that he made you roll your eyes more times than any person you had ever met.
But this stranger was someone that seemed interested in you, if the way he was smiling at you was any indication.
“Hi.” You greeted shyly, because even if you had a plan to mess with Matt, you were still talking to an attractive guy at the bar. You glanced over your shoulder, feeling the weight of someone’s eyes on you and were completely unsurprised to see Matt boring holes into the back of your head. You shot Matt a wink before turning back to the stranger, propping your chin up on the palm of your hand for extra effect.
The stranger barely was able to return the greeting before a solid body slid behind you. The newcomer placed a hand on your hip, no doubt glaring at the stranger in front of you over your shoulder. You knew who it was, though you were a little shocked at the speed that he had crossed the bar at.
“What’s up, man?” Matt asked the guy, his hand on your hip shifting so his arm was around your waist. You leaned back into him, smiling at the way his grip tightened on you at your action. The stranger eyed Matt carefully, the way he wrapped himself around you, and you would’ve called Matt out for his casual possessiveness, except you were reveling in the feeling of his touch on you.
The stranger left without any protest, and you spun on your stool to face Matt. His arm fell from around you, and you spotted the frown on his face. Even from your spot on the stool, you were still slightly looking up at him as he leaned sideways against the bar.
“Why are you so pouty, Matty?” You teased, poking his stomach and mimicking his frown.
“I want you to look at me the way you look at him.” He confessed, and though you had been trying to make him confront his feelings you hadn’t expected him to give in so soon.
Matthew Tkachuk was nothing if not stubborn, but his current demeanor showed that he truly cared about.
And because you were trying to process a thousand and one different thoughts, you laughed, effectively ruining the moment. Matt looked at you, and you could tell that he was confused—even a little nervous, and your Matt didn't get nervous—by your reaction.
“Sorry.” You chuckled, waving a hand between the two of you. “It’s just, I do look at you the way you think I was looking that guy.”
“You do?” You chuckled at the way his eyes practically bulged out of his head and he had never looked more confused, more hopeful, than he did in the moment he processed your words.
“I have for, like, months now.” You nodded. “I was just doing that to mess with you.”
And just like that, your Matthew was back. His shocked smile turned to a shit-eating grin, his cocky aura retuning. You smiled widely, glad that not only did he return to normal, but your feelings were out in the open and, most importantly, they were returned.
“So, I guess that means I can do this.” Matt stated smugly, using one of his hands to cup your face. He was leaning in, giving you enough time to back out if you wanted to. Before you knew it, his lips were crashing against yours and any remarks you could have made left your mind in an instant. It was a long time coming, and the fact that Matt had been so oblivious to your feelings was so on brand that the kiss was a little awkward with how much you both were smiling.
When you pulled away to breathe, Matt looked like the cat that ate the canary. You rolled your eyes at him, but the smile never left your face as he dropped his hand from your face, parting your knees to stand between them. You sighed, propping your head on your hand, looking up at Matt the same way you had been looking at the stranger earlier. Except, this time, the adoration on your face was genuine.
“Guess you can.”
