Clear As Silver Drops
It’s my birthday and I post what I want to! *sing this as Necessary Evil by Motionless in White*
To be totally honest, this is inspired by @my-darling-haldir who was asking for Haldir fic recs for her bday and I said myself why not? Why not indulge in your love for elves and mixed ocs? So here we are, with something in which Legolas isn’t with the Fellowship and in his place we have Elva, the only woman in a group otherwise made up of men only. Enjoy!
Words: 3132
"I'm afraid we can't stay here any longer," Aragorn said, turning his gaze to the mountains, raising his sword as if he wanted to curse Gandalf for his recklessness.
“What hope do we have without him, now?” asked Frodo under his breath, talking mainly to himself.
“We’ll have to do without hope,” replied Elva, talking to the whole Fellowship. “It may be that one day at least he’ll be avenged, but for now, let’s have courage and stop mourning: we have a long way to go and a lot of things to do.”
At her words they all stood up to look around, making her weigh for the umpteenth time what her role really was in their mission. She should’ve asked Gandalf when she still had time, but now he had taken that secret to the grave and she could do nothing but find it herself. A skilled archer and an excellent diplomat, Elva felt more like she was there to act as a glue between cultures, and thus prevent those men, all with different histories and upbringing, to go one to the North, dominated by three sparkling white peaks, Celebdil, Fanuidhol and Caradhras, one to the East, where the forward-projected arms of the mountains steepened abruptly, with distant lands extending beyond, and one to the South, where the Misty Mountains stretched endlessly.
Less than a mile away, slightly lower, as they were located at a high point on the eastern flank of the valley, they saw a lake: it was long and oval, looking like the tip of a spear stuck deep in the basin to the north, with the southern waters out of the shadows, bathed in sunlight but still dark, the deep blue of a clear night sky seen from a lighted room. The surface was calm, and all around the bare banks were covered in soft grass. The Fellowship walked the uneven and bumpy road that descended from the Gates of Moria, just a winding path among heather and twigs, sprouted between the broken stones; it still could be seen that it once meandered from the Dwarf Kingdom’s lowlands, but the broad paved street was now reduced to a ghost of itself, just like Durin’s stone.
“I can’t go on without deviating for a moment to see the wonder of the valley!” exclaimed Gimli.
“Be quick, then!” said Aragorn, checking the gates behind them. “The sun sets early, and even if the Orcs won’t come out, perhaps, sooner than dusk, we must already be very far away at sunset; it’s almost new moon, so the night will be dark.”
Elva almost cursed under her breath: if the lightless night was approaching, even her monthly blood was coming. Of all the advantages of being a half-elf, unfortunately she hadn't inherited the one of not suffering like mortal women.
“Come with me, Elva!” cried the dwarf, distracting her from her thoughts. “I don’t want you to go away without first seeing Kheled-zaram.”
For some strange reason, despite her elven half, the dwarf liked her company, and quite a lot too. Together they descended the long green slope swiftly, followed slowly by the hobbits. A brief glance into the dark waters, and back again to the road, now turning south, going down quite steep from two offshoots that embraced the basin. A little lower than the lake, they encountered a deep well of crystal clear water, from which a steam rose, flowing right after down a rocky groove.
“Thirsty as you may be, don’t drink this water,” Gimli warned. “It’s cold as ice.”
“Over there, are the woods of Lothlorien,” said Elva, pointing at a golden haze in the flat lands. “It’s the most beautiful among all the homes of my people. There are no trees like those of that land: in autumn, their leaves don’t fall but turn to gold, replaced only in spring by the new buds covering the branches with yellow flowers. Then, the soil is gold as the ceiling and the smooth and grey bark of the trees make them look like silver columns, as our songs in Mirkwood still tell. My heart would be so happy if I were among the branches of that wood and the spring smiled!”
“My heart will be happy even if it’s winter,” Aragorn said. “But many miles separate us, let’s hurry!”
For a time, Frodo and Sam managed to keep up, but the warriors advanced swiftly and soon they were left behind. When Elva noticed, she immediately told Aragorn, who, seeing them so far away, ran back on his own steps, calling Boromir to follow him. He apologized, full of disquiet.
“So many things happened today, and we’re such in a hurry that I forgot you were injured. You should’ve said something, because in silence nothing has been done to alleviate your pain. A little further on there’s a place where we can rest for a moment. Come, Boromir, let’s carry them!”
They soon encountered another stream flowing down the western slopes, confusing its gurgling waters with the swirling ones of the Silverlode, diving together from an overhand of green coloured stone and foaming down in a hollow surrounded by fir trees, low and curved, with steeps sides covered with rapeseed and blueberry bushes. They stopped at the bottom, where was a flat area crossed by the bed of shiny pebbles in which the creek flowed noisy. It was nearly three in the afternoon, and they had travelled just a few miles from the Gates. The sun was already turning to west, painting a grave expression on Aragorn’s face as he cared for Frodo and Sam’s injuries.
“Lucky you” he exclaimed, to lighten up the gardener’s mood. “Many have received a worse reward for killing their first Orc. The cut isn’t poisoned, as is unfortunately the case for most wounds inflicted by their blades, so it’ll heal well.”
He then opened his saddlebag and took out some withered athelas. While fresh were more effective, the leaves would still do their work in cleaning the wound. When Frodo’s turn came, he was quite reluctant, saying he was fine and just needed some food and rest, but Aragorn persisted, and took off his old tunic and worn shirt, giving an exclamation of astonishment, which soon turned into laughter: the hobbit wore a silver coat that sparkled before their eyes like light on a choppy sea, the gems bright like stars and the tinkling of the rings producing the same sound as the first raindrops falling into a pond. If word got out that a hobbit had such a wonder, all the hunters of Middle Earth would’ve galloped towards the Shire, but all their arrows would’ve been vain before a mithril armour. Still, there was a dark blackened bruise on Frodo’s right side and one of the rings had passed through his soft leather jacket, penetrating into the flesh. While the others prepared the meal, Aragorn made more athelas water, filling the basin with its acrid fragrance. After the late lunch, the Fellowship put out the fire, erasing all traces of it, and climbed out the hollow, resuming the road. They hadn’t come far when the sun disappeared behind the western heights and great shadows crept along the sides of the mountains. Twilight veiled their feet, and a light mist glided in the depression, while far to the east, the evening lit up with its pale glow lands, plains and distant forests. Sam and Frodo managed to walk briskly and Aragorn led the Fellowship for another three hours with a single, shot break, after which the late nigh imposed her dark reign. There were several stars, but the moon waning would appear much later.
“Lothlorien!” Elva cried. “We have reached the edge of the Golden Wood!”
The trees stood imposing, arching over the road and the river that swept suddenly under their leafy branches, trunks gray in the pale starlight and leaves quivered with a touch of fallow yellow.
“We’re still too little far from the Gates, but we can’t go further. Let’s hope that the Elves virtue will protect us from the danger pursuing,” said Aragorn.
“Assuming the Elves still live here, in this darkening world,” Gimli said, joining them.
“It’s been a long time since some of my folks came back to see the land we abandoned centuries ago,” replied Elva, “but we know that Lorien is still not deserted and a secret force repels evil far from this district. Nevertheless, its inhabitants rarely show up, and perhaps now they live deep in the woods and far from the northern borders.”
Aragorn confirmed with a sigh, as if some memory in him had been awakened. “We must suffice to ourselves, for tonight. We’ll still walk a short distance, until the trees are thick around us, then we’ll leave the path to look for a place to rest.”
“There’s no other way?” asked Boromir, irresolute.
“What better way would you want?” asked Aragorn.
“A simple path, albeit flanked by a hedge of swords,” Boromir replied. “Our Fellowship has been conducted in strange ways, and all of them so far with an inauspicious outcome. Against my will we passed under the shadows of Moria, towards our perdition, and now we have to go into the Golden Woods, even if we have heard of that perilous district in Gondor, where it’s said that few of those who set foot there come out, and of these, non has been released unharmed.”
“Don’t say unharmed, but unchanged, and then your words will be truthful,” Aragon retorted. “Wisdom has certainly diminished in the city of those who were once wise if now they speak ill of Lothlorien. You may not believe me, but there’s no other way for us, unless you want to go back to the Gates or climb the mountains or swim alone along the Great River.”
“Then guide us!” agreed Boromir. “But it’s dangerous.” “Very,” Aragorn confirmed. “Beautiful and dangerous, but only the evil has to fear here.”
They walked a little over a mile into the forest when they encountered a third stream flowing rapidly from the tree-lined slopes, climbing west towards the mountains. They could hear it roar in a cascade hidden by the shadows, before the dark water crossed the path ahead of them, joining the Silverlode in a whirlwind of ponds hidden by tree roots. It was the Nimrodel, the river on which a long time ago the Silvan elves composed many song. She grew up singing them in the North, mindful of the rainbow over the waterfalls and the golden flowers floating on its foam. Everything was dark, now, and the Bridge over it collapsed, but its waters were still able to wash away any sign of fatigue, so she proposed to wade it to find on the other side a place to rest.
“The sound of falling water will perhaps bring us sleep and forgetfulness from sorrows.”
One after another, the men followed her and when they were all on the other bank, they sat down, rested and refreshed. Elva told the stores of Lothlorien, the ones the Mirkwood elves still treasured in their hearts, stories of the sun and stars on meadows along the Great River, from a time before the world turned gray. When finally silence fell, they heard the music of the waterfall that flowed smoothly in the shadows.
“Do you hear Nimrodel’s voice?” she asked. “I’ll sing you the story of a girl who was called like the river next to which she lived a long time ago. It’s a lovely song in Sylvan, but I’ll sing it in Westron for you.”
Then, with a sweet voice so faint it almost disappeared in the rustle of the leaves, she intoned the ballad of the elf with a white mantle edged with gold; she had long hair and white skin, the free girl with a voice clear like silver drops. It was evident that some of her companions thought this creature lost in the dewy mountains could’ve been her, so she sang about her lover, an elven king of trees and clearings, went away on a ship swept by the north wind.
From helm to sea they saw him leap, As arrow from the string, And dive into the water deep, As mew upon the wing. The wind was in his flowing hair, The foam about him shone; Afar they saw him strong and fair Go riding like a swan. But from the West has come no word, And on the Hither Shore No tidings Elven-folk have heard Of Amroth evermore.
When Elva's voice trembled, the song ended. She said she couldn't continue because she didn't remember how it went on, but it was a lie: long and sad was the story about the doom befallen on Lothlorien when the dwarves roused evil in the mountains. She glances sideways at Gimli, who looked somewhat grateful, and quickly changed subject, proposing to camp on the trees for the night. The Fellowship left the path, entering the shadows of the forest further dense, headed west along the mountains steam and far away from the river, until they found a small group of trees with big trunks.
“I’m at home in roots and branches, but this species is unknown to me; I need to climb to see what their shape and way of growing is,” said Elva.
“Whatever they are,” replied Pippin, “they would really be wonderful if they offer a possible night’s rest to others than birds: I don’t know how to sleep perched on a hanger!”
“Then dig a ditch in the ground, if that’s more to the habits of you race,” Elva retorted, impatiently. “But you have to dig fast and in depth, if you wish to hide from the Orcs.”
Before she could do anything else, however, an authoritative voice spoke from the shadows. In amazement, she crouched frightened against the trunk.
“Stay still,” she whispered to the others. “Don’t move and don’t speak!”
A soft laugh was heard in the foliage, and another clear voice spoke in an elven language. Elva looked up and answered in the same idiom, different from the ones the western elves used.
"Who are they, and what do they say?" asked Merry.
"They're Elves," Sam replied. "Don't you hear their voices?"
"And they say you breathe so hard they could pierce your heart despite the darkness,” Elva hissed, silencing the hobbits. To be honest, there was no reason to be afraid: the elves said they’ve been long aware of their presence but they didn’t hinder the Fellowship in crossing the river since they heard her voice beyond the Nimrodel and recognized she belonged to their Nordic lineage.
“They’re begging me to go up with Frodo. It seems they’ve received news about our journey but they ask the others to be patient for a moment and guard the feet of the tree, waiting for them to decide what to do.”
At those words, a ladder was lowered from the shadows: it was made of a silver-gray sparkling cord and despite its frail appearance, it proved itself strong enough to withstand the weight of several people. Elva went up fast, while Frodo tried to persuade Sam to stay with the others. It would’ve been a wise choice, it was easy to offend her people, but the gardener was immovable and in the end they entered the flet, talan in elvish, through the circular hole open in the centre. The elf holding the ladder, the eldest, invited her to sit with his companions, two younger guards, both fully dressed in silver gray fabric, a valid help to hide among the stumps and then greeted the hobbits in a slow Common Tongue.
“It’s rare for us not to use our mother tongue, since now we live in the heart of the forest and don’t like to deal with other people. Even our own relatives in the North are divided from us, but some still go in foreign lands to gather news and watch over enemies, and therefore they speak different languages like me. My brothers Rumil and Orophin understand little of what you say, but we heard of your coming from Lord Elrond’s messengers when they passed by Lorien on their way home. From many years we no longer knew anything about your race and we didn’t think there were still any hobbit in Middle Earth. You don’t seem bad natured and since you come with an elf of our lineage, it’s with pleasure that we’ll help you, as Elrond asked us to, although is not out habit to lead strangers across our land, but you’ll have to spend the night here. How many are you?”
"Eight: me, four of them,” said Elva, alluding to the hobbits, “and two men, one being Aragorn, an elf-friend of the Westernesse folk.”
“The name of Aragorn son of Arathorn is known in Lorien, and he has the benevolence of the Lady. So, everything is fine,” said Haldir. “But you have so far only named seven.”
“The eight is a dwarf,” admitted the girl, never lowering her eyes, no trace of shame in her voice. She knew that Haldir must’ve understood by now that not only elven blood ran in her veins, but he didn’t seem to care.
“This is not good: we haven’t dealt with them since the Dark Days and they’re not allowed into our country. I cannot let him pass.”
“He’s of the Lonely Mountain, one of Dain’s trusted people and friend of Lord Elrond, who has personally chosen him to be part of our Fellowship,” she explained. At her words, the three elves exchanged a long, knowing look.
“Is he perhaps your companion, milady?” Haldir asked.
“Would it make any difference on his courage and loyalty?” she asked, heedless of what some strangers might think. If she had cared about the opinion of all the souls she had met in her long life, her heart would’ve already burst with pain.
"Very well," said Rumil at last, displeased. Ignoring the fact that the hobbits didn’t understand him, he told her in Sindarin that if she and Aragorn had watched and answered for Gimli, he could’ve passed, but only blindfolded.
“Now, we mustn’t waste any more time,” Haldir resumed. “Your companions have been on the ground too long and soon in the morning you’ll have to continue your march. The hobbits will stay here with us, while you’ll remain in the other talan with the rest of the Fellowship.”
“Call if something is wrong!” he added in the end, as a farewell. Elva was halfway down the ladder when she heard one of his brothers mutter something about such a beautiful voice wasted in a terribly vulgar way, but she couldn’t understand his reply.

A gendarme quickly told everyone they had to go on the other side of the fence, so we headed that way, but then I saw a wide open space diagonally off to the left and I told Errol, “Let’s just walk over here and hang out until they kick us out.” He agreed and we were RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE CSC BUS!!!! I really admire Bjarne Riis and they are my favorite team! We got a bunch of photos around CSC, Domina, Fassa Bortolo and others (yes, Petacchi, Mario and others) and pretty much just hung out and soaked in the atmosphere and checked out the riders as they went back and forth. I also got a good shot of Johan Bruneel and got my picture taken with Phil Anderson and Pedro Delgado (who is much smaller than one would think)! What a great time!. Cheap Jerseys from china

The 1.8 inch hard drive offers 120 GB of storage; more than any other PMP in the market. This means you can carry not just lossy MP3 files, but Apple Lossless (ALAC) files as well, giving audiophiles one less lament about the loss of finer detail that occurs with compression. The iPod Classic 120GB is very well built though the scratch prone chromed rear is still a killjoy.

Hard to Analyze Love When You’re in it.
“I’m in the land of pine and air
Of mountain, squirrel and grizzly bear,
In the land of bitterroot and sagebrush, too.
Where trout filled streams are not a few.”
I’m in Montana and it is LOVE. And I give a nod to John Steinbeck when he said it’s hard to analyze love when you’re in it.
My YSEALI experience can’t be written in 140 characters. IG stories can’t speak enough about this 5-week academic institute. It’s more than just an Fb photo, more than just a blog. While all these can’t capture the littlest details of my journey, my heart can never lie on how much love this program can ever bring. Indeed, there’s no better way towards self-discovery than YSEALI.
And since it’s overwhelming, let me squeeze these countless experiences in 10!
The American University
I never thought that university settings in American movies would come to life! We just felt so privileged to be hosted by the University of Montana (UM) which is on the top 2.4% of Universities Worldwide (Center for World University Rankings). Over a couple of nights, our consciousness grapples with book chapters and case studies to prepare us for an exposure inside a “legit” American classroom, joining both bachelor’s degree and graduate school classes. Every morning was colder than expected but we have to get our bikes unlocked and cross a bridge to reach school. Two well regarded UM courses –“Conservation Without Borders” with Dr. Len Broberg, and “Introduction to Climate Change” by Dr. Nicky Phear- were participated in by the fellows. We experienced watching a Shakespeare in the park play while sitting on our picnic mats, studied inside Montana’s largest 5-level library, enjoyed free food and souvenirs during the welcome feast, felt amazed by their Star Gazing Room, and joined an exclusive supplementary discussions at Davidsons Honors College. Students are very welcoming and bubbly but turns focused when it comes to studying- something that everyone should ponder in striking a balance.
Good Food, Good Mood
Bacons, eggs and patties wake us up with vigor! While most Asians are rice-eaters we took the time to enjoy a wide variety of salad and a daily vegetarian selection. The Food Zoo which is the university’s primary café serves rotating choice s of entrees, fresh fruits, desserts, and traditional fast food favorites. We were also introduced to cuisines from China, India, Vietnam, and Thai while savoring the flavor of fruits from Downtown Farmers Market up to the Cajun fries and Po Boys of Louisiana.
Service Projects
Roll sleeves and we’re ready to serve! Americans are sympathetic and openhanded. They don’t only share; they assure the quality of what they share, since community involvements and civic responsibilities are known to be key aspects of American society. We harvested produce in the PEAS Farm which is also used for personal rehabilitation of troubled youth and adults through service education; repacked pretzels in Missoula Food Bank for distribution to school children; contributed to the maintenance of young poplar trees in Misssoula Hybrid Poplar Water Reclamation Project; and finally volunteered in D.C. Central Kitchen which uses food as a tool to strengthen bodies, empower minds and build communities.
Educational Study Tour
Authentic learning is also found beyond classrooms. While based in Missoula, we enjoyed a variety of field trips throughout Montana. Lips can’t lie when it says “The snow glows white on the mountain tonight”, because the Glacier National Park handed to us our first trail, first slide, and first snow fight. I must say, the cold never bothered us anyway. Meanwhile, evening lecture on Apex Predators and Wildlife Conservation in th e Crown of the Continent as well as the Nat Geo’s Geotourism Project gave us a glimpse of their preservation initiatives. We also visited the state capitol in Helena, Anaconda Company mining of Butte and Miltown, and the Flathead Indian Reservation of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Jam-packed as it may seem, all these tight schedules and long travels were unfelt when you just have karaoke buddies singing out loud over a carpool!
School Visits
I admit I missed home. But whenever I visitt other schools, I miss my own workplace, colleagues and my students even more. There’s a legit High School Musical feels as we paced along the hallways of the Arlee High School where we also played a Native American sport called “Lacrosse”. Also, the visit in Montana Tech University provided us with discussions on mining technology. What’s most interesting though is that young American students in Lewis and Clark Elementary School seemed to be native Filipino speakers after learning our language and culture. In fact, it wasn’t hard to handle them because they have such inquisitive minds and are ever curious about the world.
Outdoor Exploration
Our adventure spree kicked off by riding a chairlift to see the scenic view of Snowbowl Mountain Resort miles above the ground. This serves as ski resort during the winter and popular location for outdoor pursuits such as mountain biking and hiking in the summer. Most of the days may be freezing cold, so we look for ways to sweat a lot! We went on foot for a hike to the “M” on Missoula’s iconic Mt. Sentinel; conquered our fear of heights with the ropes course and climbing wall; and sailed the Clark Fork River in a whitewater rafting. There are a lot to explore from First Friday gallery night in Downtown Missoula to a Saturday Market with local artists and producers. “Go Griz” is our battle cry! We can’t help but scream in awe to show our support for UM’s Grizzly football game in America’s most popular sport. Indeed, our “Touchdown, Montana!” yell was more than literal!
One ASEAN
YSEALI is United States’ signature program to strengthen leadership development and networking in Southeast Asia. And as chosen representatives of our countries, we discussed environmental concerns we face at home which made us reflect on our social responsibility and illuminated the many issues that transcend national borders. All of us were exposed to an array of seminar-workshops on climate change, forestry, water resource management, environmental impact assessment, ecological restoration, food security and transboundary issues where our speakers are the book authors themselves. I must say, thi s US program went beyond just learning from every other ASEAN young leader—it forged linkages and created bonds which time can never erase. In fact, we don’t worry much anymore in travelling the world because we know at least one passionate leader and best friend who thrive in each of the ASEAN countries!
Homestay Experience
We definitely found a family away from home! We spent quality time with our host families over a weekend to experience first-hand how Americans live in a daily basis. Eating home-cooked dishes, hiking and biking for a hilltop picnic, exploring local restaurants and markets, discussing politics and similarities among countries, playing gamelan, and most especially taking the longest sleep in the whole program duration, were only few of the many experiences that made us feel at home amidst distance.
To the “Big Easy”, New Orleans
Big Hello to the Big Easy! This nationwide educational tour took us to New Orleans and Lafayette, Louisiana in order to study watershed management, natural disaster mitigation, and coastal climate change after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 which was an extremely destructive and deadly tropical cyclone that hit the gulf coa st of US. Meanwhile, we grabbed the chance to venture French Quarter which reflects the neighborhood’s deep history seen in its beautiful 18th-century architecture, strolled the streets of Central Business District, and discovered Tremé which serves as a hub of African American and Créole culture in New Orleans. Also, the swamp day tour by boat through the Atchafalaya Basin took as into adventure through moss-draped trees and lingering alligators, while the Cajun culture got as dancing in a full night of music that keeps “joie de vivre” alive and flourishing.
US Capital City- Washington D.C.
We spent the final stop of our program in D.C. to learn about the formulation and enforcement of environmental legislation. The formal feels and busy vibe around the city brought our feet to the iconic memorials of the late presidents Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln, while reading all remarkable quotes of Martin Luther King, Jr. Moreover, our visit in the Ocean Conservancy and the Greenpeace wrapped up our exposure with the most successful environmental organizations worldwide; and of course, the experience won’t be complete without a glimpse of The White House and the US Capitol.
All these myriad escapades taught me how to love a country that’s not my own. And this same love translates into a mission to serve my home. As a young millennial leader, 140 characters, IG stories, Fb posts and blogs can never fully express how grateful I am to have witnessed the brilliance of the outside world, the brilliance of drawing lines from the dots that connect us, and the brilliance of life that made these days happen. I have had lots of stories to share. And these stories shall give life to little dreams built by love.

The formation of planets and characters
Hey friends! First of all, I would like to say thank you for the positive response over my female Doctor article! I’ve been thinking I want to do more articles that aren’t reviews. I have a few in mind, but of course, in due time. And speaking of due time, this is well overdue! I think in some ways, I was staving off having to do “Marco Polo,” as it’s the first reconstruction. Ugh. I’ve also been kinda busy lately. I got a new sewing machine! Now to learn to sew…
Carole Ann Ford is an interesting actor. When I first watched the original Doctor Who, I found Susan to be rather grating. Her constant screaming and melting down was a source of frustration for me. But through this second watch through, I’ve come to see Susan as a sort of entry point. In a lot of ways, she’s a cypher through which the audience experiences the world of Doctor Who. But in many ways, she too is an enigma. Even her last name, Foreman, is a lie. Being both accessible, and aloof makes her as interesting (if not more) as the Doctor.
When I first watched "The Edge of Destruction," I was fresh off the rather over-long Dalek serial preceding it. The idea of a short two-parter was a welcome change in pace. What I was surprised to find, however, was something far more interesting than a 'short trip.' The Edge of Destruction was very possibly my first true favourite story from classic Doctor Who, and it was all because of Susan.
There’s not much plot to be had in the story. At the end of "The Daleks," the TARDIS console sparks, and everyone goes out like a light. The music is ominous and mechanical as we pan across the scene. Down on the cold floor of the TARDIS lies our friends, still unconscious from last week’s cliffhanger. Barbara wakes Ian and Susan, but the Doctor lies unconscious with a gash on his head. They all seem to have amnesia and are acting strangely.
This episode has two examples of some of my favourite early Who tech. The bandage Susan retrieves for the Doctor is infused with medicinal ointments. When the ointment has faded from the bandage, the would has healed. There’s something kind of wonderful about that. We also get a brief appearance from my beloved food machine. Susan uses it to get the Doctor a glass of water, one of two liquids the food machine is capable of producing. The other being milk. What kind of milk do they drink on Gallifrey? Is it Time Cow milk? Do their burgers regenerate?
This episode gives us a lot of the TARDIS, really. Part of what made early Who so great was that it yearned to establish things like a mythology and character development. They didn’t just want to put any crap on the screen to fill a time slot. There’s a real workmanlike storytelling happening here, and it shows. Something I’ve always felt was rather unfortunate is how little of a part the TARDIS actually plays in most Doctor Who stories. Most of the time, it’s simply a way to get the Doctor and his friends from place to place. In some ways, I understand this. You’d want to avoid any deus ex machina moments. However, the TARDIS could also be utilised in other ways, such as a setting, or like in "The Ghost Monument," where it becomes a sort of relic. There are many aspects of the TARDIS to explore, and this story does that. Part of the TARDIS that we’re shown is one we seldom ever see in Doctor Who- the sleeping quarters, where Susan is brought after being shocked by the TARDIS console.
It’s not just the crew that is acting strange, the TARDIS seems to be on the fritz as well. The doors keep trying to open and shut. The console is shocking anyone who gets near it. Barbara is tending to the now awake Doctor, while Ian takes Susan to rest. As I said, Susan really seems to carry this episode, and for me, it’s because she’s genuinely frightening at moments. Our lovable friend is growing paranoid. She seems to think some sort of alien threat is onboard. Brandishing the rather large pair scissors she used to cut the Doctor’s bandage, she stabs at Ian, narrowly missing him.
There’s a terrible nature to Susan’s demeanour. It’s hard to tell if this is how Susan would react to a real threat, or if her responses are equally as heightened. She stabs at the bed in a fit of rage and confusion. As a visual, it’s genuinely creepy. Ian stumbles his way into the console room to help the Doctor solve their dilemma. Susan has collapsed in a fit on her bed, dropping the scissors.
The three adults discuss various theories. Barbara wonders if it’s not some sort of person, or thing sabotaging the TARDIS. The Doctor calls this theory "ridiculous." The Doctor suspects it’s a mechanical issue. Since he can’t check the TARDIS console, he checks the fault locator, which may be one of the most on the nose contraptions in sci-fi history. It’s probably located right next to the plot device, you know, for navigation purposes. Barbara suggests she go check on Susan. Ian warns her not to alarm Susan about the idea of something being onboard. Susan overhears this. Already paranoid about the idea of an external influence, she squirrels away the scissors in her robe and returns to bed. Ian goes to help the Doctor with the fault locator, but its readings are normal. No fault can be found.
If I’ve not said how much I love Barbara already, let me do so now. She’s such a kind and caring person. She’s aware Susan is wary of her, yet she tends to her rather selflessly. She applies a damp cloth to her forehead hoping to soothe her. In many ways, Barbara has a very motherly strength that I find very endearing. Susan, however, is not buying it. She thinks Barbara and Ian are both lying to her. Everything about her demeanour is indicative of paranoia. She’s wrapped up in her robe like a cocoon, arms and legs crossed. She speaks directly in clipped sentences. In a lot of ways, I believe this may be some of Carole Ann Ford’s best acting in the role.
Barbara notices that the scissors are missing and asks Susan to give them to her, causing her to wield them once again. Susan demands answers, she knows they lied to her about the supposed alien onboard. Barbara manages to get the scissors from her. The TARDIS has become something foreign to Susan. It no longer feels like home. The shadows seem more mysterious and dangerous without the sounds of the TARDIS to accompany them. She suspects that perhaps the alien onboard has found a way into one of the people onboard. She runs out of the room toward the Doctor.
The Doctor and Susan discuss how the console only seemed to attack the two of them, adding to their paranoia toward Ian and Barbara. The Doctor is able to use the console to turn on the scanner. Oddly, it doesn’t shock him or render him unconscious. Hopefully, the scanner can show them their location, and maybe shed a little light on their current predicament. The image on-screen shows a peaceful meadow, but the Doctor claims it’s impossible. The doors begin to open and close again. A strange groaning, like a large beast, is heard as bright white light pours into the TARDIS.
Another location flashes onto the screen, "Quinnis of the Fourth Universe," an alien terrain rather unlike any meadow. The Doctor reminds them that this was a location they had visited several adventures ago. This is pre-Totter’s Lane. The TARDIS records their journeys into its memory banks. Another image appears onscreen, a planet in a galaxy which appears to explode in a flash of light. The Doctor believes Ian and Barbara have sabotaged the ship as a means to make him return them to 1963 London. He even goes as far as to accuse them of knocking Susan and him unconscious, which causes Barbara to go off on him. She’s had it with this old man’s attitude. As far as she’s concerned, he should be kissing their feet for all of the times they saved his skin. She storms away but is stopped suddenly as she screams in fright.
What happens next is genuinely confusing. As I watched this scene with my partner, we had no clue what was actually happening. Something about the ormolu clock onboard the TARDIS has changed, but it’s not exactly evident as to what it is. I actually had to look it up online. Due to the ornate design of the clock, and the quality of the picture, it’s really hard to tell, but something has melted the clock face. Whatever the force is, has also melted their watches, because… time? I guess? Barbara chucks her watch across the TARDIS in a fit. Poor Barbara, someone get this woman a Mai Tai.
During all of this strangeness, the Doctor comes back with some nightcaps for everyone. It’s not exactly a Mai Tai, but it’s a welcome respite from wall to wall paranoia. Barbara and Susan take their nightcaps and retire to bed. Ian staggers behind to admonish the Doctor for his treatment of Barbara, but the Doctor isn’t hearing it. What comes next is one of my favourite First Doctor lines. Ian tells the Doctor that he struggles to keep pace with him, to which the Doctor replies- "You mean to keep one jump ahead. That you will never be!" Basically, this is the Doctor’s essence rendered into a single sentence. Sadly, he’s chosen the wrong enemies in Ian and Barbara. It seems that as more of the medicine from the bandage on his head fades, the more of his cognition returns. But the Doctor says he needs sleep more than he needs to feel sorry.
Overhearing the Doctor and Ian’s conversation, Susan begins to feel guilty about her behaviour. She apologises to Barbara for the Doctor’s harsh words. Barbara seems to be okay with Susan at this point, but it’s evident she’s still angry with the Doctor. Soon everyone but the Doctor is asleep. It’s made pretty evident that the Doctor has drugged the Time Cow milk. With everyone asleep, he wrings his hands in a mercurial manner and goes off to fiddle with the TARDIS console, only to be choked by a pair of hands.
This is of course where the first episode ends. We’re led to believe that the hands are this supposed external antagonist, but they turn out to be Ian. The struggle is short lived as Ian faints and falls to the ground. Evidently, sleep is just not a thing that is not possible on the ship, as everyone slowly turns up. The Doctor is now sure it’s sabotage on Ian and Barbara’s behalf, but Barbara defends Ian. Susan, as if she hadn’t just apologised to Barbara is suddenly back on Team Doctor, but it’s just as short-lived when the Doctor claims he plans on treating the two as enemies. Susan begins playing the impartial detective. At this point, her logic is more reliable than the Doctor’s paranoia. Despite the fact that they couldn’t have done all of the things that have happened, the Doctor decides he must throw them off the ship.
Before he can do this, the fault indicator lets off a terrible alarm. It appears the entire TARDIS is out of order. While this is going on, Ian tries to strangle Barbara this time, which causes the Doctor to realise that he’s not acting within his right mind. If Ian and Barbara were working together, then why would he attack her? The combination of the sleeping drugs, and whatever is going on has made Ian delirious. He wasn’t trying to strangle anyone, he was trying to keep the Doctor and Barbara both from touching the console. This, mixed with the fact that the TARDIS is on the verge of disintegration has brought the Doctor back to his senses.
No longer believing there is an evil entity onboard, and that they haven’t crash landed, the Doctor must discover what kind of powerful force could push the TARDIS to the point of destruction. The force manages to push the column on the console up momentarily. The force could destroy the TARDIS if the column were to dislodge. What comes next is a rather confusing trail of logic. Basically, Barbara deduces that all of the strange occurrences have actually been the TARDIS’ way of alarming the crew that the fault is not within the machine itself, but in their own thinking. It’s one of the earliest indications that the TARDIS has a sort of mind of its own, something which even the Doctor has a hard time believing, but it turns out to be true. I particularly like this moment because it’s Barbara who figures it out, not the Doctor. It gives her indignation toward him even more gravity.
A faulty spring on the fast return switch has caused the button to stick, pushing the TARDIS further and further back through time, to the formation of a solar system. Since the fault locator wouldn’t see the pressing of a button as a fault, it didn’t show up on its readings. The TARDIS, however, is a thinking machine, and therefore was trying to speak to them in the only way it knew how. By showing them the sequence of the meadow, to a primitive planet, to an unformed planet, to a forming solar system, to a blinding flash was the TARDIS relaying the idea that they are fast heading toward a Big Bang level event. The TARDIS’s defence systems have been keeping it in a sort of time loop to protect them from the bang.
William Hartnell gets one of the best monologues of his tenure during this scene. The lights go dark as if the Doctor were the only person onstage. The camera pulls in on his face slowly as he waxes romantic about the formation of stars and planets. He delights at this celestial dance occurring as if the very cosmos flow through his blood. With a distant look in his eye, he’s almost eerie, but there’s an undertone of veneration that intimates a kind of natural endowment. The Doctor is more than a curmudgeon. There exists within him, a calling toward the vastness of the universe. This is an important moment for his character development because he’s not just irascible, he’s more than clever- he’s something special.
Conversely, Barbara is less than pleased with the Doctor. With the threat now out of the way, we’re given a moment for some character development on both her and the Doctor’s parts. Realising he’s been wrong, the Doctor apologises to Ian and Barbara, but Barbara isn’t as open to forgiveness. This causes the Doctor to have to swallow his pride and admit his wrongdoing. He gives her some warm clothes for their next adventure, adding that they need to take care of her as she’s very important. She appears to accept his apology as the two of them walk arm and arm out of the TARDIS into a snowy climate. Susan marvels at the enormity of a footprint left in the snow, which the camera holds on as the credits begin to roll. It’s all very ominous, as per usual.
Final Thoughts: My initial reaction to this story was enjoyment, and that hasn’t swayed much. It’s easy to get the feeling that most of the narrative choices were made because it was cheaper to film on a set they didn’t have to build anew, with no extra actors to pay. It’s the essential bottle episode, but I would say it’s an effective one. Two episodes are really as far as you can stretch this story, and it wisely doesn’t overstay its welcome. There were a few unintended confusing moments, due to either bad effects or vague writing, but in the end, you come away understanding what’s happened. A lot of the serial hinges on the performances of the actors. Everyone, especially Jacqueline Hill and Carole Ann Ford elevated the script. I can’t imagine it’s very easy to maintain a performance that requires constant shifts in emotion, but they sell it. On a production level, they do a surprising amount with very little. In many ways, it’s early Doctor Who condensed. The basic fundamentals of filmmaking are on display- mood lighting, sound ambience, and performance. While the events of the story don’t affect much, the character development makes this serial a must watch. And at only two episodes, it’s not much of a sacrifice!

By Michael Snyder
Once upon a time, it was popular to say that the U.S. government only had enough wheat stored up to provide everyone in America with half a loaf of bread. But that is not true anymore. Recently, I discovered that the U.S. does not have any strategic grain reserves left at all. Zero. Nada. Zilch. As you will see below, the USDA liquidated the remaining reserves back in 2008. So if a major food crisis hit this country, our government would have nothing to give us. Of course the federal government could always go out and try to buy or seize food to feed the population during a major emergency, but that wouldn’t actually increase the total amount of food that was available. Instead, it would just give the government more power over who gets it.
The U.S. strategic grain reserve was initially created during the days of the Great Depression. Back then, the wisdom of storing up food for hard times was self-evident. Unfortunately, over time interest in this program faded, and at this point there is no strategic grain reserve in the United States at all. The following comes from the Los Angeles Times…
The modern concept of a strategic grain reserve was first proposed in the 1930s by Wall Street legend Benjamin Graham. Graham’s idea hinged on the clever management of buffer stocks of grain to tame our daily bread’s tendencies toward boom and bust. When grain prices rose above a threshold, supplies could be increased by bringing reserves to the market — which, in turn, would dampen prices. And when the price of grain went into free-fall and farmers edged toward bankruptcy, the need to fill the depleted reserve would increase the demand for corn and wheat, which would prop up the price of grain.
Following Graham’s theory, President Franklin D. Roosevelt created a grain reserve that helped rally the price of wheat and saved American farms during the Depression. In the inflationary 1970s, the USDA revamped FDR’s program into the Farmer-Owned Grain Reserve, which encouraged farmers to store grain in government facilities by offering low-cost and even no-interest loans and reimbursement to cover the storage costs. But over the next quarter of a century the dogma of deregulated global markets came to dominate American politics, and the 1996 Freedom to Farm Act abolished our national system of holding grain in reserve.
As for all that wheat held in storage, it became part of the Bill Emerson Humanitarian Trust, a food bank and global charity under the authority of the secretary of Agriculture. The stores were gradually depleted until 2008, when the USDA decided to convert all of what was left into its dollar equivalent. And so the grain that once stabilized prices for farmers, bakers and American consumers ended up as a number on a spreadsheet in the Department of Agriculture.
Of course if there are no major national emergencies of any kind and life just continues on normally for decades to come, this will not be an issue.
But what if something does happen?
Right now, we are already witnessing all sorts of “mini food cataclysms”. For instance, bees just continue to die in unprecedented numbers all over the globe. During the most recent year, U.S. beekeepers lost approximately 40 percent of their colonies…
Widespread deaths among bees, known as Colony Collapse Disorder, were first reported about a decade ago, but the problem has not diminished and may have been especially bad recently.
Beekeepers across the United States lost roughly 40 percent of their colonies from April 2014 to April 2015, according to an annual survey conducted by the Bee Informed Partnership and Apiary Inspectors of America, with funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Another cataclysm is happening with bananas. In fact, it is being reported that the specific type of banana that we eat right now is in danger of being wiped off the face of the globe…
Bananas are in big trouble. While the beloved fruit remains as popular as ever, its crops across the world have been hit with an infectious fungus and the damage is irreparable.
The Cavendish species of banana, which was introduced in 1965, is currently the primary banana export in the world. And it’s being completely ruined by Tropical Race 4, a fungal disease that began in Malaysia in 1990 and has since spread to Southeast Asia, Australia, and finally Africa in 2013.
Believe it or not, this is not the first time a fungus has wiped out an entire species of the bright yellow fruit. By 1965, the Gros Michel species of banana—which lasted longer, were more resilient, and didn’t require artificial ripening—was eradicated after what was called the Panama disease, a different strain of a similar fungal disease wiped out the world’s commercial banana plantations.
In addition, the recent bird flu epidemic was responsible for the deaths of 48 million turkeys and chickens. This has driven egg prices through the roof…
U.S. egg prices continued their upward climb following the most devastating outbreak of bird flu in decades, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture report this week.
Prices of large Grade A eggs delivered to store doors in the Midwest Regional area hit a range of $2.73 to $2.81 per dozen, the report showed.
Indianapolis Business Journal notes this is the most expensive eggs have been, according to data that stretches back to 2000.
More than 48 million birds have been affected since avian flu first was spotted in the U.S. in December.
And of course there are many, many more examples of significant problems that are hitting our food supply. The following short list comes from one of my previous articles…
More than 40 percent of our fresh produce comes from the state of California, but thanks to the worst multi-year drought in the history of the state much of the region is turning back into a desert.
Also due to the persistent drought, the size of the U.S. cattle herd is now as small as it was during the 1950s, and the price of beef has doubled since the last recession.
Over the past few years, something called “porcine epidemic diarrhea” has wiped out approximately 10 percent of the entire pig population in the United States.
Just off the west coast of the United States, a wide variety of sea creatures are dying in unprecedented numbers. For example, the sardine population along the west coast has dropped by a staggering 91 percent just since 2007.
Down in Florida, citrus greening disease is absolutely crushing the citrus industry. Crops just keep on getting smaller year after year.
Are you starting to see what I am talking about?
In many years, the world already eats more food than it produces. We don’t have much room for error, and there are some countries that are already experiencing a full-blown food crisis. The nation of Guatemala is one of them…
Nearly one million people in Guatemala are struggling to feed themselves as poor rainfall has led to drought and shrunken harvests, worsening hunger among the poor, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said.
Linked to the El Nino weather phenomenon, this year’s drought has hit subsistence farmers living in Central America’s “dry corridor” that runs through parts of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, hard.
“In Guatemala, 170,000 families, approximately 900,000 people, have no food reserves left. This is the third consecutive year they have been hit by drought,” Diego Recalde, head of FAO in Guatemala, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
In recent articles, I have also mentioned the growing food crisis in Venezuela. Things have gotten so bad that soldiers dressed in riot gear are now policing supermarkets…
Soldiers with riot shields, tear gas canisters, and rifles patrol lines in Maracaibo, a major city in the northwest.
Scarcity is particularly acute here because smugglers — taking advantage of the leftist government’s policy of fixing prices on some goods — buy products to sell for profit in nearby Colombia.
“We have to maintain control otherwise there would be chaos,” said Lieutenant Carlos Barrera, 21, pushing back crowds at one supermarket.
As you read this, intense food shortages are also affecting Syria, the Soloman Islands, Yemen, Zimbabwe, and several nations in southern Africa.
Just because you may live in a “wealthy western nation” does not mean that this will not impact you someday as well.
In fact, a major study was just released that came to the conclusion that global “food shocks” are going to become much more common in the years ahead. The following comes from the Guardian…
The likelihood of such a shock, where production of the world’s four major commodity crops – maize, soybean, wheat and rice – falls by 5-7%, is currently once-in-a-century. But such an event will occur every 30 years or more by 2040, according to the study by the UK-US Taskforce on Extreme Weather and Global Food System Resilience.
Such a shortfall in production could leave people in developing countries in “an almost untenable position”, with the US and the UK “very much exposed” to the resulting instability and conflict, said co-author Rob Bailey, research director for energy, environment and resources at Chatham House.
Sadly, I believe that things are going to turn out to be far worse than even that report is projecting.
I am convinced that we are moving into a time when increasing volcanic activity, shifting weather patterns, geopolitical instability and severe economic problems are going to create critical shortages of food all over the planet.
So what will you and your family do when those times arrive? Please feel free to add to the discussion by posting a comment below…

Llama San Sommelier Rachael Madori Is Most Excited About Wines of the Canary Islands and Mexico
Rachael Madori is the sommelier and service director of Llama San, an upscale Nikkei restaurant in Manhattan that serves a combination of Peruvian and Japanese cuisine. At Llama San, Madori has cultivated a wine program focused on coastal regions, showcasing coastal flavors of Japan and Peru through mineral and saline wines.
As a sommelier, Madori aims to create a wine experience that is both unpretentious and impressive. In her eyes, the wine choices at Llama San are intended to dance alongside each dish, unleashing an adventurous window into history, art, and exploration.
During the coronavirus pandemic, Madori misses bringing the stories and excitement of wine to guests. From the chateaux wines grown in reverent tradition, to the funky rollercoaster wines that take one’s palate on twists and turns, Madori loves delighting guests. Below, Madori delves into her passion for wine, sharing thoughts on what she describes as poetry in a bottle.
1. What is your current favorite wine?
There is a wine named Un Garçon au Pays du Soleil (“The Boy Who Plays in the Sun”) by the producer La Cave des Nomades (“The Cave of the Nomads”). I will never get it off my mind, and I pour it every day. Technically speaking it’s a rosé, but I promise it hits you like a wild orange wine just blushing in disguise. A blend of Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Merlot, this wine dances across all the sweet spots! It’s my favorite because it’s got finesse, but it’s feral. It has a sour cherry nose that you would expect to follow through to the palate, but it’s surprisingly nutty and effervescent. Hazelnuts, strawberries and a delicate mushroom make me feel like I’m sipping a glass on a warm autumn afternoon with a pie in the oven. That’s what wine is to me: a portal to a time and place in your own imagination.
2. What is the most memorable bottle you’ve opened?
The most memorable bottle I’ve ever opened was a blanc de noir on Jan. 1, 2019. Story time! This was André Clouet Champagne Brut Grand Cru Cuvée 1911. The name sounds fancy, but it’s not a break-the-bank bottle. It’ll make perfect sense why it is one of the most memorable ones I’ve opened. I’ve enjoyed wine in a lot of different places including California, Washington, Bolivia, Peru, Thailand, and others. They were all delicious. Some were more memorable than the next. However, this Cuvée 1911 was a bottle I got from a local wine shop in Brooklyn. The shop, Bed-Vyne Wine & Spirits, is truly doing my community in Bed-Stuy a great justice. This begins explaining why the wine is special, even before the bottle opens.
Obviously, it was midnight on New Year’s when I popped this baby open. Not a lot of people know what a struggle the lifestyle of a hospitality industry worker is. If you have a partner, you rarely see them. If your friends have day jobs, you rarely see them, either. Your days are nights, and your nights are days. Holidays are not just to celebrate, they’re to help others celebrate. But we do it because we love it, and there’s something I cherish inside those of us who choose to serve.
It was the first New Year’s Eve that I had to celebrate in 10 years. I got this beautiful bottle of Champagne, and I waited for my partner to get home. We popped it open “properly” (not properly at all) on our unofficial Brooklyn rooftop that we snuck onto. The notes of baked peaches and toasted brioche were delicious and the bubbles were divine. But what was even more memorable was that that bottle was being enjoyed in my city, on our rooftop, while the fireworks exploded around us. We cheered to our neighbors, to the tiny people walking below, and poured a splash out for what we lost that past year. I will never forget that bottle. Wine is an experience, not a drink.
3. How do you make guests feel comfortable if they seem intimidated by you (in a restaurant)?
I believe it’s a natural feeling to feel intimidated by anyone that studies a field you’re about to question. I still feel that myself when I dine out and speak to a fellow sommelier! I remember that anxiety from before I began in the wine industry. It’s not a feeling I ever want my guest to experience.
Of course, I approach the situation the way any hospitality worker would, with a bright smile and the attitude that it’s time to make your guest’s day. But, it’s all about your intention. If you go in wanting to sell the “best” bottle or the most expensive bottle, you’re going to validate their intimidation for no good reason. I always immediately ask the guests what they love, to tell me about a wine they’ve had before that stood out to them, or to let me know what kinds of flavors they enjoy that aren’t wine-related. I get them excited about what we can do together — making the conversation about them (which it is!) right off the bat lets them know that I’m there for them.
I work with intent to remind myself the definition of a sommelier: a wine steward. When I’m tableside with you, I’m there to make you and your guests’ night amazing. Any other reason is fueled by ego.
4. What’s the best wine you can get at the grocery or discount store?
I haven’t bought wine from the grocery store in a while, but I think it’s truly important to touch on because that’s where most people get their vino! In my opinion, if you’re getting wine from a general store, I would go with something that is delicious no matter what. For my palate that means Gewürztraminer or Champagne. Champagne is my favorite color, food, wine, drink, place and probably will be my next dog’s name — you get the point. So even if I’m in the grocery store, I’m going to pick up a bottle of sparkling wine. Most likely, it isn’t real Champagne, but there’s Cava, which is equal if not better; or just a good old-fashioned grocery sparkling. (Like I said, pick something you think is yummy no matter what). When you’re steeped in mass producers and you’re not sure what to pull off the shelf, go for a classic that you just love. It’s that simple.
5. What regions and styles of wines are you most interested in?
The two wine-growing regions I’m most excited about right now are the Canary Islands and Mexico! The Canary Islands will be my next travel destination once the world is safe again. This area fascinates me. Simply looking at a photo of the moon-like surface and volcanic black soil gives me goosebumps. I want to walk around the vineyards for hours. (When I visit vineyards, I enjoy walking through the rows chatting with the grapes!) To be honest, I didn’t know much at all about Canary Island wines until our team opened Llama San. Once I tasted my first saline-driven, fresh-but-smoky glass, I was hooked.
Mexico doesn’t jump to a lot of peoples’ minds, but they’re producing so many different varieties down there! It’s always cool to see a region in which you would think the climate doesn’t work for wine, but turns out Mother Nature has other plans. Producers are mixing varieties that aren’t commonly seen together and I am a sucker for anything that “breaks rules.”
6. What’s the best way to ask for a budget-friendly bottle at a restaurant?
The best way to ask for a budget friendly bottle at a restaurant can go two ways, and it all depends on your evening and comfort level. There are some nights I go out, and I’m OK with letting my friends know we aren’t getting a bottle over $60 because I had to pay rent that day. However, sometimes I want things to be more organic and not bother my guests with budgets and numbers. But, how do I get the sommelier to know? How do I let this complete stranger know that I want to love a wine, but I also want to love my bank account in the morning?
I always tell my friends it’s a sly idea when you ask for the sommelier to simply pick out two or three wines from the list that are within your budget and just ask about them. Then proceed to tell the sommelier what styles you really like and what you’re eating as well. As a sommelier, we will immediately recognize you’ve formed a budget, and we’ll guide you towards your best value and best experience. Like I have mentioned many times, it’s not about money, prestige, or showing off. Wine is about enjoying yourself.
7. Which regions offer the best value?
Personally, I find it impossible to decide on a region that has the “best value” due to the fact that every area of the world that is producing wine will have something for everyone. I think it’s really important for people to experiment with every region, find out what they love, find out what they don’t like, and find out what they’re not sure about. Then, focus their selections on those experiences. It’s difficult to place true value on wine when not everyone likes the same thing.
I like to step away from the idea that there’s a perfect wine or the best wine. It’s less about the region you’re choosing and more about the producer. Get more intimate with your selection! If you want to know about true value, look at who (yes, the person!) makes that wine you’re about to drink. It’s like anything else I buy: I didn’t buy it because of its name, I bought the wine because it was made by a creative.
8. Where do you like to buy wine online (or which clubs do you recommend)?
Buying wine online is great, especially when you can’t find what you’re looking for in a wine shop. There’s something I truly enjoy about going into a shop I’m unfamiliar with and picking the brain of the associates on what they like or recommend for my preferred style. However, I’m desperate to try monthly wine boxes, specifically Vinebox. I love the idea because with this company you get nine different wines by the glass in vials. Not only do you get to try nine different wines, you get to buy the bottle of whichever you like at a discount. It’s such an approachable and fun way to explore your palate.

Retail Christmas Hell

Summary: Reader works at the local grocery store. Her manager, Thor Odinson, hires a handful of security guards to make sure his workers are safe in the silly season chaos.

Posting Date: 2016-12-16

Christmastime was a month of furious soccer mothers, kids stealing candies, vengeful elderly people who were known usually to be sweet and comely, and generally, lines that went out the door as far as the eye could see. To be honest, it never phased you, seeing as the more people who came through your register, kept you busy and on your feet, the faster time went and the closer it was until knock off.
Odinson's Food Market was known for its fresh produce and friendly smiles, but when you had to put up with screaming babies and the bossing around of customers who wanted bags packed a certain way, the last thing you were thinking of, to be frank, was smiling at the assholes who left their food shopping to the last minute and were in a rush like there was no tomorrow.
You weren't sure how the store was handling it; Tony who stacked the shelves said they were too busy to breathe as the people would practically wipe the canned food and things into their carts as soon as he stacked it. Your manager, Thor was always on his feet trying to sort out altercations and mixups with prices and hormonal adults arguing over the last watermelon on sale. Even Clint, who ran the little deli in the side of the store said he was in over his head with orders for hams and turkeys and such.
In short, Christmastime was retail hell.
But, it was money, and you needed just that to get out of the hell at home to rent an apartment as far away as you could from your terrible family as you could, and maybe, just maybe go to higher education so those who came after you in your bloodline weren't doomed to repeat history. This dream was that which kept your fake smile on, hands without cramps, and tolerance to the shoddy customers higher than that of a saint.
So far, the end of November and the better half of December had been a madhouse, with everyone coming in and grabbing their long life items, stocking up on decorations and fairy lights for their trees, on their holiday foods. Now, nearing the day itself, it seemed to be busier twofold than you'd ever seen it in your time here at Odinson's Food Market. Lines were larger. Ambience louder. The faraway echo of a howling child nearing in the pram, pushed by the nuclear family about to go nuclear if they did't buy the right sort of Parmesan.
It was a Tuesday when Thor Odinson decided, that he would use his father's funds to do something more than advertise for the little store with. It was a Tuesday when he hired five security guards from the privately owned company called ASGARSHIELD. As someone who only went to school because your parents were sick of having kids around their feet at home, you weren't really from a background where you'd seen many security guards. Maybe the ones in the bank who scowled over their shades indoors to make sure you didn't make a heist while they were on guard, or even the policemen, sure, but never these people.
Nat, Phil, Heimdall, Sam and Maria started that day, standing at the entrance to the store to ward off evil with their professional glares, to break up quarrels before they began. Nat and Maria never talked, always staying in their spot, watching out with near superhuman vision. Phil was all business until he made friends with one of the other cashiers, Steve, yammering on about their mutual love for an old time-y comic character when (if) it got slow enough to talk. Sam stuck around inside, stalking the known shoplifters like a falcon, picking them up on stuffing lollies down their pants in the act. And Heimdall, the quiet, intrusive Heimdall, would watch the entrance at the end of your register.
It took another Tuesday and a half for Heimdall to break his calm, collected shell; you noticed this well with your cashier eyes. When your friends had asked what 'cashier eyes' were, they'd laughed; that you had super-vision or something while on duty, noticing things about people or situations as to avoid major fallout and such. But with this very real, very handy super power of yours, you saw Heimdall watching you, as he always did for the last month, except, he was smiling. Just a little; not enough to show his teeth, but enough to know he had the muscles in his body to do so.
"You alright, sir?" you ask him, leaning over the register booth to see him better. With five minutes without a customer, you were free to relieve yourself of the stresses of standing up for nine hours a day and those customers that backchat. "Look a little off in your head there."
Heimdall nodded. "Just been watching you, that's all." He frowns, gesturing to the family who had gone on their way. "How can you stand it, talking to people all day?"
You crack a smile at that, "Well, how can you stand it, standing there, watching people all day?" you ask back, staring into his dark eyes. "I've been doing this job for years now, it just sort of grows on you, and, well, after the first dozen angry customers, you try to make sure that the next person whose mood is down can be perked up a little bit." You glance to your side, and noticing a customer pushing their trolley into your bay, you give him a nod, and start the never-ending job once again.
It was the Tuesday before Christmas, which, coincidentally, was the day before. It was the day from hell, and apart from your hair looking like literal crap, so was your mood, even though it was the same fake smile for every person who wanted things bagged a certain way. Maybe it was because the air conditioner slash heat was working overtime too and broke, or the fact that even Steve, the angel from above was having trouble with these literal demons buying four hundred dollars of empty carbs in their carts, but before you knew it, the icing on the cake was being laid out.
He had bars in his brows and lips, and looked like he came from good breeding for every part of his DNA except for the manners that were as black as his soul and clothing. There was nothing nice about this guy; perhaps the only nice thing would be that he couldn't stay there bossing you around, calling you names.
"I need those bottles double bagged, I've got a way to walk, you bitch," he hissed, barely glancing up from his Blackberry. Who even had a Blackberry, this was the modern ages, not 2006. "Fuck - not like that -," he tossed his phone into a pocket in his heavy greatcoat, and leaned over like the register bay was nothing between the pair of you. For a moment, your heart stopped, thinking he was going to throttle you, because well, he looked like he was high on something, and not just his ego. At once, he began to rip the bags from the rack, throwing them haphazardly into others.
You glanced to Heimdall, but it seemed like he got the message before you sent it. At once, the man was upon the guy, pushing him back into his side of the register, where all the other customers were supposed to stand, and stay.
"I'm going to have to ask you to leave," Heimdall intoned, voice monotonous like he was a secret service agent.
At once, the punk guy stretched to full height, and cocked his head like he was ready to fight anyone and anything that stood in his way. "I'm just leaving. I need my stuff for Christmas, and I'll be off." He gritted.
You stood there, stock still, heart racing like a little mouse caught in the crossfire of a cat and dog. Heimdall noticed you, or maybe he just knew everything that happened inside the places he was protecting, and crossed his arms. "I will not hesitate to remind you, sir, this establishment does not serve those who treat those working are slaves." His voice was not small, but booming, loud enough to be heard over the hubbub of the store. "You can take your business elsewhere."
The guy make a noise, somewhere between a grunt and a hiss, and marched off, mumbling something about 'the wrath of the Von Doom family' and something very rude, and unable to be mentioned again in polite conversation.
The rest of the line of people who had witnessed the outburst had been humbled by the rudeness the guy displayed, and the dominance that the tall security guard had shown. Not another person was ill-spoken to you that night, but you guessed it had something to do with the fact that Heimdall had stationed himself beside the register like he was a secret service man protecting a president's child or something.
By the time the shift ended - your coworkers loved to let you go first, they knew you had a lot on your plate - you couldn't help but not leave until you had some answers. Heimdall was just collecting his backpack, shades atop his forehead even though it was ten o'clock at night. "I - I want to say thanks for what you did, early," you managed to get out, biting your lip. "He's always been a bit of a prick - I mean, not a nice guy to me every other time he comes through."
"You're very welcome, _______." Heimdall nodded, pulling the other strap of his backpack on. "I could tell. He's not a nice guy."
You bob your head, but it's then you realise. With Christmas being tomorrow, and your few days off until New Years Eve, you won't be seeing him again, perhaps ever. He's been so nice to you, always looking out, keeping an eye on you. A spark of courage is mustered, and you burst out, "Um, I'm not sure if you like pizza, and seeing most pizza stores are closed over the holidays, but I'd like to go out there, er, with you, to say thanks. Properly." You blurt.
It couldn't have been any more botched, the poor guy could see through that in an instant -
"I love pizza," he smiles, and grabbing a notepad from his pocket, pens down digits in ink. "Here's my number. I look forward to seeing you again, _______."
You were sure that Tony and Thor were cheering over by the front desk. Even more sure that Clint from the deli had overheard, as there was a huge whistle, and sure enough, there he was, with two thumbs up high above his head.

I Love Ilam! (And You Will Too)
Not everything within the Staffordshire Moorlands and the Derbyshire Dales is located or based around industry. In fact, quite the opposite is the real case; and this is no different for a little-known gem in the middle of the countryside that you will absolutely adore. Situated in the Peak District National Park, this place, if your eagle eyes have spotted, is indeed Ilam (pronounced ‘eye-lamb’). And let’s just say that ‘lambs’ are one of the star attractions of this place – of course, that’s not the reason to go on its own, but in the springtime, they are so cute!
This really isn’t a place for those fun seekers who really crave the adrenaline rush of whizzing round at sixty miles an hour, but don’t be put off by taking life a little slower whilst on holiday. Sometimes, all you crave is a bit of peace and quiet, away from everything and everyone – and this place really certainly offers a dose of that, giving you the chance to truly recharge your batteries. In a world which is running at a pace which is faster than ever, Ilam will give you the chance to really live life in the slow lane - not in a boring way, but a way in which you can appreciate the sights and sounds of a place which you probably never knew existed.
Did you know: Ilam was the first community in the UK to phase out incandescent light bulbs?
I Am Ilam!
There is so much more to Ilam than what you see at first glimpse of the rolling mountains (those hills really give your shoes a run for their money) – you could really get lost in it all and you may never want to leave. Breathe in the air and smell the beautifully cut grass of the park. Listen and all you will hear is the river Manifold and the occasional bird of prey. Look around and all you will see is the little ice cream van which has been there for all the time that I have known this little hamlet and the green, green grass of home. Really, what isn’t there to love?
Okay, you might think that there’s nothing to do. And perhaps I haven’t convinced you yet that you should take a hike and visit this little plot of land at the bottom of an enormous hill – so what you need to do is close your eyes, take away all distractions and imagine this: a stunning summer’s day, with the sun shining, the birds chirping and fields rolling as far as the eye can see. Now imagine a flowing river just metres in front of you. Imagine strolling beside the river bank and taking in the crisp, fresh, unpolluted air of the Staffordshire Moorlands. Think about stretching your legs and not letting a care in the world distract you. Fancy some food? You’ve now found a flat patch of land to lay down and eat a crisp cucumber sandwich you packed hours earlier in a cute little cool bag. Now compare that to the stuffy, polluted scene of the city and think to yourself, where would you rather be? I know where I would love to spend a free day.
Apart from the cute little ice cream van (which you need to see for yourself), there are other things to look at and there is much more to explore than your imagination would have ever thought of. The main visitor attraction is Ilam Park, which is owned and operated by the National Trust.
That’s all well and good, but what’s actually there, then?
Ilam Park is ideal for families and walkers, with gentle riverside walks and a popular tea-room garden with far reaching views across the Italian Gardens towards Dovedale.
Officially, they say that the Ilam Park is open all year round, but I would certainly recommend that you pick a nice sunny day to really make the most out of your experience there. With a one mile circular walk, family trails, orienteering courses, a tea room, a village church, National Trust shop and a calming river to take in, you definitely need to spend a large chunk of your day within the realms of Ilam to really get the most out of your time in this little-known gem of central England. Not only is Ilam Park great for individuals and families, but its even more exciting for your four-legged friends to run their legs off in the parkland areas, but one word of warning – there are lots of sheep about, so in a lot of the fields when you do find yourself exploring the local area, make sure you keep your dogs on a lead!
Of course, it won’t just be your dogs’ legs which will need a good rest after your day exploring Ilam and its surroundings – it’ll be yours too; and that’s where the National Trust team room will be your saving grace. Offering stunning views of places you’ll be more than eager to explore (or at least slap on your Instagram page) after a well-earned sit down, the tea rooms will almost certainly make it onto your itinerary at some point during your day – and why the heck not; you would have definitely earned it. So why not 'have your cake and eat it'? Scrummy cake, energising coffee and a well-earned sit down: surely there is nothing better.
Ilam is Famous?!
Ilam has been featured on TV. If you venture half a mile out of Ilam itself, you will find Casterne Hall, which was built in the mid-eighteenth century. This house was used in an episode of Agatha Christie’s Poirot called ‘The Mystery of Hunter’s Lodge’, as well as in the 1983 version of Jane Eyre, the 1988 adaptation of Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles, the 1997 production of Far from the Madding Crowd and in 1999, Jonathan Creek: Frog Hollow was also produced there.
Casterne Hall is a Grade II* manor house set high above the Manifold Valley in its own grounds in the heart of the Peak District.
Open to everybody, this little piece of history offers a plethora of things for you to do, including offering the opportunity to have a grand tour of this nearly three hundred year-old house and offers a wonderful place to hold dinner parties, picnics and other special events throughout the year – all you need to do if you are thinking about taking a peek a history while you’re staying in the area is visiting their website and sending them an email.
If you just want to drop by on a public operating day, the owners also hold tours of the house on specific days of the year, usually during the summer months. These commence at 15:00 prompt at a cost of £7.50 per person, however, groups are welcome to arrange a tour prior to their visit and the owners will be happy to take you round the house. If you fancy something at Christmas, for £20 per person, they offer a seasonal delight of a Christmas Tour and Tea during December. Don’t be a grinch – you’ll be a fool to miss it!
There is More to See and Do Than You First Thought…
Loaded with so much to discover, this blog has only scratched the surface of what you can see and do in and around Ilam. With indoor and outdoor activities ready to satisfy your desire to explore the Peak District, you will easily while away the hours. You don’t have to be somebody who knows a lot about nature; you don’t have to know anything about the Staffordshire Moorlands; you don’t have to be a National Trust member. What you do need to be is ready to open your eyes to the world around you – and if you do that, the inspiration you will get from Ilam is literally endless.
Maybe you are an aspiring photographer – now is the chance to test out your skills and get those Insta photos on point.
Do you have the desire to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life? Well, this is the place for you: young, old, on your own, or in a group - there are so many ways in which you could take in your surroundings and while away the hours.
There is so much around the UK and around the Staffordshire Moorlands which you could miss because you might be drawn in by the flash and fabulousness of hugely famous attractions. But, dig a little deeper, and you might be surprised at what you could find. Just a few miles from Ashbourne, Alton Towers and Uttoxeter, I could virtually guarantee that you never knew that this place existed. Go on, open your eyes (and nose) to the wild, get away from your phone (yup, mobile signal isn’t the best there) and explore!

Practicum Essay
When Henry Hudson arrived on September 12, 1609 at what at the time was called Mannahatta, he and his crew were confronted by vast uncultivated forest land consisting of Pine and Hickory trees, streams, and diverse wildlife, especially black bears and beavers (Wildlife Conservation Society 2009). The land itself was incredibly fertile and “ecologically complete,” as Eric Sanderson words it in “The Mannahatta Project” (Wildlife Conservation Society 2009). With the interactive 1609 map website, I searched my apartment on West 70th Street to find that my neighborhood was largely home to field mice and beavers, and was very hilly (The Welikia Project). Uptown, the history of the Bronx River likely dates back to the Pleistocene Period several hundred thousand years ago when a glacier blocked a portion of the original path giving it its current shape today (Bronx River Alliance). It was originally referred to as Aquehung or, River of High Bluffs by the Mohegan Native Americans and later as the Bronck’s River by European settlers who constructed mills along it for water power to produce commodities such as flour and pottery beginning in the mid 17th century (Bronx River Alliance).
Fordham University has been a steward of the river since its founding in 1841 on the Rose Hill Farm located on the river bank (Fordham University). A portion of the river ran adjacent to the farm emptying into a pond in and from which wildlife lived and drank such as muskrats and cattle. Up until the portion, known as Mill Brook, was diverted to the city’s storm drain system, it provided an array of ecosystem services for the University and surrounding farms and communities. The portion of the campus located along the river once consisted of agricultural fields, hiking trails, and swimming holes (pictured below) until 1889 when the land along the River was bought by the city to create the “Bronx Park,” presently known as the “New York Botanical Garden.” This closeness to the river provided a well established and important connection to nature for the Fordham community. It also made for a peaceful antidote from the ills of the metropolis hub downtown that one could access by taking the New York or Harlem steam train (Gilbert and Wines 1998). For example, the Faculty parking lot was once low-lying marsh that would be flooded right before winter to create a skating rink. This land proved essential especially during the early 20th century when funding for the school was dismal and the campus farmland provided food, specifically where Cunniffe House currently stands. The site of the Rose Hill Gym was once an apple, pear, and cherry orchard and potatoes, corn, and other crops were grown elsewhere on campus (Gosier 2016).
(Bronx River Alliance)
(Gilbert and Wines 1998)
Today, the university has many green initiatives such as bolstering its energy efficiency to minimize waste by installing LED lighting effectively conserving 712 kWh of energy per year (Sustainability at Fordham). It is also aligned with the city’s mission to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2030. The school also built new green buildings that are LEED certified, such as Conley Hall and the Lincoln Center Law building. It also has two student-led community gardens at both campuses (St. Rose’s Garden CSA). Despite these efforts, in 2011, Fordham received a C+ rating on its “Green Report Card”; however, it did score an A with respect to “Green Building” and “Energy,” so its low score is largely due to administrative matters (The College Sustainability Report Card 2011). Fordham’s environmental history is particularly relevant to my practicum in that my task is to essentially get students more involved in climate action and by working with groups such as the LC Environmental Club, we can better improve the school’s green initiatives through projects such as the community garden as an attempt to re-greenify and beautify the campus in honor of what it used to look like not too long ago.
I chose the “External Internship” practicum option and have had the pleasure of interning as a “Field Representative” with an environmental organization called Our Climate which is essentially geared towards promoting climate action in students and on college campuses. On average I work 3-5 hours a week, depending on the project to which I am assigned. One of my favorite assignments was partnering with the LC Environmental Club in hosting a tile painting night for my organization’s Blue Bird mosaic, which is the New York State bird. I also wrote an environmental commentary piece for actress Nikki Reed to post on her social media as well as other Op-Ed pieces on various environmental matters such as the Paris Agreement and Trump’s roll back efforts of climate action under the Obama Administration. I also got to be a part of the “State Carbon Pricing Network” Coalition’s weekly phone call where I had the opportunity to listen to representatives from all over the country describe and provide updates on their own state’s environmental issues and endeavors, as well as act as the New York representative. My internship gave me the opportunity to act both passively and actively in the endeavor against climate change. I got to attend hearings for bills and acts such as the “Climate and Community Protection Act” and also voice my opinion through writing, which I really enjoyed because it allowed me to see my work published and read the reactions and comments from readers. I really gained a lot from this internship in that I wasn’t simply sitting at a desk but rather actively participating in efforts that I am passionate about and getting to see those efforts publicized, which was very rewarding as I often feel as if I don’t have a voice precisely because I am just a student, whereas the very organization I worked for is literally centered around student engagement.
I found myself referring to Miller over and over again while writing environmental Op Ed pieces for my practicum, especially when it came to current issues concerning topics such as environmental politics and worldviews, sustainability and sustainable design, carbon emissions, ozone standards, the partisanization of environmental issues, etc. Chapter 5 of Miller discusses Environmental Worldviews, Ethics, and Sustainability, and the lessons I learned from this chapter sprung up a lot during my practicum, especially concerning matters of environmental education and injustice. I thought a lot about how our policy makers, especially under the current administration, are not adequately representing the public in that many of them simply do not prioritize climate change or outright deny its existence. In other words, many of the people charged with the task of protecting and meeting the needs of people hold the skewed worldview that we can exploit nature and use resources all we want because we’ve never run out of them before. Miller would call this a “Planetary Management” worldview (Miller 2012, 663). I really don’t think that we live in a democracy anymore but rather a corporate oligarchy where powerful industries call the shots, which is something my internship attempts to address by supporting methods such as carbon pricing of these very corporations.
Another topic that has honestly kept me up at night is this recent aforesaid partisanization of environmental issues, which Miller touches on with respect to the Environmentalism Era that emerged in the early 70’s under the Nixon Administration along with the creation of the EPA (Miller 2012, S8). This recent trend has largely designated and dismissed climate change as a liberal issue and explains why so many conservatives reject the very science that proves its existence. In contrast to the Nixon Era, the Trump Administration is actually attempting to reduce and reverse environmental agency power and regulations, especially the EPA (Miller 2012, S8). In fact, Trump just appointed Andrew Wheeler, a former coal-industry lobbyist as the new head of the EPA. Miller suggests that it was the inauguration of Reagan that marked the beginning of this shift promulgated by an administration that valued economic growth and other “American” values over environmental protection (S8). This pertains to my practicum as a case study that attempts to bolster government climate action by working with like-minded politicians in getting ideas and bills placed at the forefront of local government agendas.
The environmental policy recommendations I would propose for solving the problems I worked on in my practicum include (1) Congestion pricing for all vehicles entering big cities through a separate tax or charge on a toll so that drivers know exactly what they are being charged for because cities “produce about 75% of the world’s climate changing CO2 emissions (Miller 2012, 593), (2) Greater tax incentives and breaks for implementing renewable energy and sustainable design in businesses and homes, (3) Environmental education to be integrated in curriculum beginning in kindergarten as a attempt to shift the collective attitude towards nature and wildlife and strengthen environmental literacy, (4) 30% carbon emissions reduction by 2030 which is already integrated into the New York climate agenda, (5) A percentage of all tax revenue to be invested in conservation biology as well as low-income communities to improve transportation and education systems, as well as access to fresh produce through community garden and local grocery store subsidies, (6) A ban on all stratospheric ozone depleting pollutants and all ground-level ozone producing substances (Miller 2012, 458). All of these relate to my practicum as a case study for bolstering community and youth engagement in climate action by encouraging students to attend hearings and events centered around potential environmental policies and acts. For example, the Trump Administration has been attempting to loosen ground-level ozone pollution standards established by the EPA which simply cannot happen in light of everything we know about ozone. In other words, my practicum aims to involve young people more in demanding that their local government and university take action against climate change and gaining access to the right people who can help immensely in facilitating effective dialogue and action.
Miller explains that every cultural and economic facet of our society relies on natural capital. Human capital relies on natural capital for the preservation of workers by providing life’s basic necessities whereas manufacture capital “refers to machinery, equipment, and factories made from natural resources with the help of human resources” (Miller 2012, 614). That said, a government that does not prioritize the environment will ultimately cause harm to its economy and people in perpetuity. We have a lot of great politicians who are working hard to realize change, but it's simply not enough, which is why organizations such as Our Climate exist, to give voice and power to young people like myself who, to be completely frank, will live to see some of the total environmental devastation in the near future. My practicum has been an incredible learning experience, especially regarding local government processes. It has given me a seat in the first row of New York City climate action and countless opportunities to learn not just about environmental issues specific to New York but the broader, more widely impacting issues as discussed in Miller that are occurring on a national and global scale as well. I have always known that I wanted to do something regarding nature and the environment, but after high school I felt like I had an inadequate knowledge about the specific science of climate change. Together the Miller textbook and my practicum have given me a profound and well-rounded education about the climate crisis and the ways in which I as an individual and community member can facilitate action.

Eating and Exploring in Porto, Portugal
Our trip to Portugal this past fall was simply unforgettable; the country is brimming with vibrant color and oozing with charm. I left wishing we had booked a longer trip.
We concentrated most of our time in Porto and Lisbon, with a day trip to Sintra (and I plan to do separate posts for each of these stops as well as our layover day in Amsterdam soon).
This trip really began with a killer airfare deal to Amsterdam (when you see flights from Nashville to Amsterdam for $450 you don’t think, you just buy and work out the details later). While the Netherlands is definitely one of my bucket list places to visit, fall tends to be quite rainy there, so we searched around for somewhere a bit sunnier that would be a cheap and easy flight from Amsterdam.
I’ve wanted to go to Portugal for some time now, hearing nothing but amazing things from friends and acquaintances who’d been there (and I’ll admit, the lure of the Portuguese egg tarts was strong). And flights from Amsterdam to Portugal were direct and under $200 — it seemed like a no brainer to me. All in all we spent under $700/each for our airfare doing it this way; booking a flight directly from Nashville would have easily cost us $1,200-$1,400. I call that a win.
(We’ll definitely go back to Amsterdam at some point in the future, ideally in springtime. But this trip we opted to just spend a night on each end. I may post about our long layover at some point, as it’s a gorgeous city and I got some amazing photos despite being there less than 36 hours.)
Anyways. After a full day of exploring in Amsterdam, we hopped a flight and landed in Porto that evening, and spent the next two days and two nights eating, imbibing and exploring.
Portugal’s second-largest city after Lisbon, Porto (also called Oporto) lies along the Duoro river, its historical center (dating back to 300BC) was named an official UNESCO world heritage site in 1996.
Porto is best known for the fortified wine that bears its name (if you didn’t know that Port wine was born in Porto, here’s your lightbulb moment for the day), but this slightly grungy, endearingly charming city is so much more than that. Indeed Porto has a character that is all its own.
Wandering through the historic streets, at first glance all you see is color: gorgeous ceramic tiles in rich blues and greens, colorful doors and bold, expressive street art. But look a bit closer and you can’t help but notice the dilapidated buildings and crumbling facades. It’s the sort of beautiful decay that makes for stunning photos, sure, but it also leaves you feeling a bit melancholy. The numerous abandoned buildings are mainly a result of historically strict laws regarding rent control and historic preservation that meant landlords chose to abandon the buildings entirely rather than invest in any repairs or renovations. Additionally, Porto has faced a struggling economy that, unfortunately, cannot be bolstered by Port wine alone. Tourism certainly helps, but it also means that any renovations that are happening to these historic buildings are being done for tourists and short-term rentals rather than locals. Increasingly more and more people are leaving the city, lured by the cheap rents of the surrounding suburbs, and to larger and more vibrant cities like Lisbon.
Still, the fact that the historic city hasn’t experienced the same surge in redevelopment as many other major European cities isn’t all bad: as it means that the history is still intact, the public faces of the buildings still colorfully tiled even if the inside of the building is little more than a ruin. Incessantly optimistic graffiti and street art surprises you around every corner, turning the abandoned buildings into colorful canvases for original art.
The iconic blue and white tiles that adorn many of Porto’s most ornate buildings are called azulejos, and have been gracing the buildings of Porto and other cities in Portugal for centuries. They were first introduced to Portugal by King Manuel I in the early 1500s after returning from a trip to Seville, Spain; they’ve been an iconic part of Portugal’s history and architecture ever since.
While many residential buildings feature more geometric patterns, Porto’s churches, train stations and other public buildings often feature ornate scenes depicting stories from the bible and other tales from Portugal’s history. They’re both ornamental and functional, helping regulate the temperature of buildings as well as aiding with the upkeep of the building, requiring just a simple cleaning every so often instead of an entirely new paint job.
One of the highlights of our time in Porto was a food tour we booked with Taste of Porto. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we’ve found food tours to be one of the most worthwhile uses of our travel budget. We’ve lucked out with some pretty awesome and memorable food tours in Venice and Barcelona, and our Porto tour was no different.
The daytime tour took us around downtown Porto, stopping for sweets and meats and wine, sharing informational bites of Porto’s history and culture along the way.
One of the critical discoveries for us on this food tour was… remarkably… canned sardines. They are everywhere in Portugal (there are entire shops filled with nothing but canned fish), and boy are they delicious. We took home a few tins of the sardines we sampled on the tour (Georgette was the brand, sadly we have yet to find a source to purchase them in the US), but nearly every shop had its own assortment of gorgeously packaged tinned fish.
So much better (and tastier!) than a postcard.
The food tour ended near the Clérigos Tower atop a hill in the center of the city. We figured, since we were there, why not climb to the top and take in the view. What started as a dreary day had transformed into blue skies and sunshine, burning away the last of the fog and saturating the city’s vibrant colors even more.
It was a precarious climb to the top, the narrow stone steps spiraling around the baroque tower with barely room for two people to pass. But once at the top we were in for a treat: a 360 degree view of the entire city that took your breath away.
One of my favorite ways to take in European cities is from the top of a tower, the sea of red roofs periodically punctuated by a turret or spire, the natural hills and valleys giving you an entirely new perspective than just walking down below.
I think this would be an especially stunning view right around sunset, if you’re so inclined.
Kitty corner to the tower is the famous Livraria Lello bookstore. When we walked by earlier in the day we noticed a line outside an ornate building, and stopped to ask what they were waiting for.
Why would people wait in line for a bookstore, you ask? Well, this isn’t just any bookstore: this is perhaps the oldest bookstore in Portugal, and one of the most beautiful in the world, with ornate woodwork, a stained glass ceiling, and a gorgeous blood red forked staircase in the center of it all. Needless to say it attracts bibliophiles from all over the world.
The store supposedly inspired JK Rowling’s depictions of Hogwarts, Rowling having been a loyal customer and frequent visitor when she lived in Porto in the 90s. (And perhaps this is the real reason for its fame… and the resulting lines).
Needless to say if you want to visit this bookstore, be prepared to wait in line. You first have to visit the gift shop a few doors down (yes, the bookstore has its own separate gift shop) and buy an entry ticket. Then wait in line to get into the bookstore itself. (Good news is you get store credit for the value of the entry ticket should you want to purchase any books). It’s definitely crowded inside, filled with book lovers and Harry Potter fans alike, all trying to get their pictures on the iconic staircase.
Still, crowds aside, it was a downright gorgeous store and, while I probably wouldn’t have waited if the line was longer, I’m still glad we were able to see it.
The following day, we made our way down to the riverfront and across the bridge to the Vila Nova de Gaia neighborhood, where the majority of the city’s Port wine producers have set up shop.
We figured, when in Porto… it’d be an travesty not to visit at least one port wine producer, even though we’re not big wine people. There are so many clustered on the south bank of the river you could easily spend an entire week bopping from tasting room to tasting room. So if you’re into port, well, you really need to visit Porto.
The Duoro valley, where most of the grapes for the port are grown, is an easy day trip from the city as well, so its no wonder Porto has become such a destination for wine lovers.
We opted to just visit one, and, not surprisingly, chose Taylor Fladgate (yes, we did pick up some branded souvenirs because Taylor always gets a kick out having his name on things, from guitars to golf clubs and now port wine branded tote bags and wine openers, lol.)
The self-guided audio tour was about an hour long and surprisingly informative, even for wine-novices like ourselves. I learned far more than I ever imagined I’d know about port wine.
The tour ended with a tasting, with both a white and a red port (did you know there were white ports? I had no idea!) Tawny ports are actually red ports that have been aged upwards of 30 or 40 years in oak casks until their color lightens to the signature tawny hue.
Planning your own trip to Porto? If not, you really should because it’s an incredible place to see. I’ve compiled a few of our favorite spots here for easy reference.
Where to Eat in Porto
Bolhão Market – The ultimate foodie destination, featuring fresh meat, seafood and produce as well as other local foodstuffs, flowers, handcrafts and food vendors. Note that the original market building is currently undergoing renovations, so the market has temporarily moved a few blocks away until the project’s completion in 2020.
A loja does Pasteis de Chaves – Known for their savory pastries (pasteis de chaves), with a savory meat or veggie filling in a flaky, almost phyllo-like crust.
Flor dos Congregados – Stop in this cave-like restaurant for a Terylene (a rustic sandwich featuring little more than roasted pork, prosciutto and cheese on soft bread), or make reservations for a full traditional Portuguese meal.
Cafe Guarany – One of the oldest cafes in Porto, this gorgeous, light-filled cafe is a perfect place to stop for an afternoon pick me up or a full meal.
Gelateria Portuense – This modern gelato shop in the heart of downtown porto features unique flavors like Tawny Port (duh), as well as Earl Gray and Chestnut, among others. They also serve a variety of coffee, tea and pastries.
Confeitaria do Bolhão – An historic pastry shop in the heart of Porto filled with locals and tourists alike. You can grab an authentic pastry or slam an espresso at the front counter, or have a seat in the restaurant in the back for a more leisurely meal.
7groasters – A hip coffee shop on the south bank of the Duoro, featuring specialty house-roasted coffees and light fare. We stopped by for a satisfying breakfast before heading up the hill to indulge in some port tastings.
All in Porto – Eclectic wine and tapas bar. A great place to sample some local Portuguese wines and tasty snacks to go with it.
Taste of Porto Food Tour – We did the Downtown food tour, which took us to a number of spots in central Porto, including the Bolhao market (in its temporary location). Many of the spots listed above were from this tour.
What to Do and Where to Stay
Taylor Fladgate Cellars – Just one of the many port cellars in Porto. Taylor has a very thorough and informative self-guided audio tour that takes you through the entire port production process, as well as a tasting at the end.
Clérigos Tower – One of the highest points in Porto, from the top of the bell tower you are treated to amazing 360 degree views of the city. It’s only 5euro for entry into both the church and the bell tower, although you’ve got to be prepared for a few stairs (225 to be exact).
Livraria Lello – One of Portugal’s oldest and most beautiful bookstores, supposedly the one that inspired JK Rowling’s depictions of Hogwarts. It costs 4euro for an entry ticket (purchased at the gift shop a few doors up the street), which you’ll get in credit should you purchase any books from the store.
B The Guest – Great location near the Bolhao market and a few doors down from the Confeitaria do Bolhao pastry shop, this cute guest house was a great value. Breakfast included!

National Pie Day
Christmas and New Year are rapidly becoming a distant memory so what better way to cheer up a dull January than by embracing National Pie Day! After all, it is that time of year, with the long dark evenings, when comfort food such as a jolly tasty pie has a serious attraction. So needing no further excuse, we thought we would celebrate the pie.
This does, of course, beg the question of when and why do we have National Pie Day? It takes place on 23 January each year and is an American invention:
National Pie Day, is an annual celebration of pies started in the mid-1970s by Boulder, Colorado nuclear engineer, brewer and teacher Charlie Papazian after he declared his own birthday, January 23, to be National Pie Day. Since 1986, National Pie Day is sponsored by the American Pie Council. Via en.wikipedia.org
Given that National Pie Day is more American than British (and we have our own British Pie Week 4-10 March for 2019), we thought we might focus on pies which are American in origin. Which means they are of the sweet treat variety rather than a traditional British pastry based meat and potato type. Something to cheer up January and make us hanker after summer. However, come British Pie Week, I'm thinking gravy more than chocolate so watch this space!
So what is an American pie? Well according to a really interesting history and categorisation of the American pie on Eater, it is as follows:
Today, most American pie is a round pastry with crust that envelopes a (usually sweet) filling, prepared in a pan with sloping sides and a small lip. Pies come in many shapes and sizes — there are hand pies and slab pies, fried pies and crumble-topped pies — but the most traditional American pie is a nine-inch round pie, a shape that originated in Medieval Europe.
The perfect pie is built from two things: 1) A well-made crust with a flaky texture and deep golden color; and 2) A fresh, well-set, flavorful filling. Pie's filling is how we will categorize these sweet American pie styles.
For the serious chocolate lover out there, what could be better than a Mississippi Mud Pie! It is thought the name refers to the fact that the chocolate cake looks just like the muddy brown banks of the river Mississippi but, thankfully, it tastes so much better and is a rich, indulgent treat. This recipe from Simon Rimmer is full of gooey yumminess.
From the bourbon biscuit base to the fudge topping. This recipe for Mississippi mud pie is a chocolate-lovers delight. Via bbc.com
Another pie always associated with the States, is a Key Lime Pie. This pie is so called because of the type of limes used to make the dish:
The traditional Conch version uses the egg whites to make a meringue topping. The dish is named after the small Key limes (Citrus aurantifolia 'Swingle') that are naturalized throughout the Florida Keys. While their thorns make them less tractable, and their thin, yellow rinds more perishable, Key limes are more tart and more aromatic than the common Persian limes seen year-round at grocery stores in the United States. Key lime juice, unlike regular lime juice, is a pale yellow. The filling in a Key lime pie is also yellow, largely because of the egg yolks.
During mixing, a reaction between the proteins of the egg yolks and condensed milk with the acidic lime juice occurs that causes the filling to thicken on its own without requiring baking. Early recipes for Key lime pie did not require baking the pie, relying on this chemical reaction (called thickening) to produce the proper consistency of the filling. Today, because consuming raw eggs can be dangerous, pies of this nature are usually baked for a short time. The baking also thickens the texture more than the reaction alone. Via en.wikipedia.org
Another culinary pie delight brought to us courtesy of our American cousins, is the Shoofly Pie. Now I have to confess I've never made or even tried one of these, but looking at the below recipe, I could easily be persuaded to give it a go!
This is the best shoofly pie I’ve eaten, and believe me, I’ve tried many. Some versions are dry and soft; others are quite gooey and moist. This one falls somewhere in between, and is thick and unabashedly pleasing. Shoofly is authentic American pie that comes to us from the Pennsylvania Amish and Mennonites and the Pennsylvania Dutch; we should be grateful to them forever. Surprisingly, shoofly pie is not as popular in other Amish and Mennonite communities. It is found in Ohio; but in Indiana, if you ask for a piece of shoofly pie in a restaurant, the Amish girl who serves it will rather disparagingly tell you it’s made only for the tourists - a thousand pities. Via splendidtable.org
Pumpkin Pie is, of course, usually associated with Thanksgiving but there's no reason not to bake it at other times of the year, particularly when it brings such a feelgood factor with it. This pie contains spices associated with autumn into winter - such as cinnamon and ginger - but these would work equally well for a January warm up. This video tutorial on how to make a traditional pumpkin pie isn't too long at just under 4 minutes and has the ingredients and quantities needed printed on the screen. That way you can work alongside with no need to write down the recipe as you go. Being an American recipe, the pastry uses "shortening" which is essentially any fat which is solid at room temperature such as lard (animal or vegetable), margarine or butter (although butter has a lower melting point). It's an easy to watch video, with the pie making process well demonstrated so well worth a watch!
youtube
I hope you have found something of interest in our round up of the American Pie and will celebrate National Pie Day by, if not baking something yummy yourself, tucking into someone else's tasty treat! Why not let us know which are your favourite pies in this category?
