Let’s misbehave...
youtube
I’m sure back when 15x10 aired, I was not alone in this, but readers, when I saw this scene, I screamed. Like, alarm the neighbors kind of screaming. This is - and it’s 100% subtextual but there is no earthly way this could be overinterpreted - a clear statement that the writers want to give us “canon Destiel”. (If anything it was underinterpreted by the audience - on Twitter, you could tell who was not used to examining subtext because they were very confused about why it was there.)
We’re seeing, essentially, a drug trip - Garth has just given Dean a good dose of laughing gas, and sends him on his way. “Let the gas do its thing... everything’s fine...” So (in the way film handles these things) we are accessing Dean’s subconscious, perhaps things he hides from himself - but Garth is reassuring us, we’re gonna like this.
The scene is shot in black and white, to old-timey music, in old-fashioned costumes. It evokes the Motion Picture Production Code (or the “Hays Code”), a semi-voluntary (in that you could ignore it but no reputable theater would show your film if you did) system of censorship designed to impose moral standards on film. Among the things forbidden? “Excessively lustful” sexual content - which means filmmakers got really good at finding ways to express sexual content via visual euphemism. Ways like watching fireworks together. Ways like... dancing. Hold that thought.
Dean is venturing into some territory that’s uncomfortable for him. He’s not sure what he’s doing. But Garth appears and offers to demonstrate. Narratively, Garth has been used to show us what Dean could be if he would get out of his own way: he’s well-adjusted, content, confident without being overconfident, unafraid of showing the world his internal softness, unashamed of what and who he loves. Garth is telling Dean: Drop the front, let the real you shine - and then he vanishes, and Dean tosses the prop away; he can trust himself, he’s got this.
He dances around the room by himself for a bit, but he’s looking for something - a partner. (Dean has been dissatisfied with the ‘unattached drifter’ lifestyle for quite a while - he maybe first expressed this in “Rock and a Hard Place”, but there was a moment in “Baby” that made the point outright, if indirectly.) When he finds someone to dance with... it’s a lamp. There was a time when I could have quoted you chapter and verse on “lamps, the sun, and other light sources as a stand-in for Cas” in the show’s language of symbolism; my helpful friends came up with this, in which light was used to hold space for Cas and highlight his absence from a scene. Trust me that the lamp is a stand-in for Cas, and at a minimum the audience is being invited to imagine who that lamp might represent...
Then there’s the song: “Let’s Misbehave”, originally written by Cole Porter - we can’t know how he would label himself if he were alive today, but it’s known that he was married to a woman while also having male lovers so “bisexual” is at least in the neighborhood of right. As he closes out the dance with the lamp by blowing it a kiss, we hear...
They say the Spring Means just one thing to little lovebirds We're not above birds Let's misbehave
and then Dean dances his way up the stairs to the top of the map table where he stands, rapturous, in a beam of light: his highest bliss, his happiness, his heaven, and if the light was holding space for Cas in the past, that space is now right where Dean is.
...so the tl; dr on the whole scene: they have used tap dancing (symbolic of sex) with a lamp (symbolic of Cas) to “Let’s Misbehave” (not symbolic so much as just straight up about sex) to tell us that among Dean’s deepest desires is a relationship with Cas - or turn the decoder ring one click to the left and they’re simultaneously tapdancing around (i.e. addressing indirectly) and hanging a lampshade on Dean’s desire for a life partner. They bring this up again at the end of the episode: Garth and Bess are dancing together while Sam and Dean look on wistfully, and Dean comments, “You know, I always thought I could be a good dancer if I wanted to be.” - a reference both to the dream sequence and to the domestic contentment they’re watching.
(The caveat I want to hang on all this is that if you turn the decoder ring one more click and then look at the Hays Code again, they may be telling us about Network Meddling: we would like to give you an explicit Dean/Cas romance but someone higher up the food chain has shut us down. The caveat to that caveat is that they’re willing to misbehave. ;) )

October TC Challenge ♥
Day 1: How long have you known your TC for?
About five years by now, which is crazy.
Day 2: What sets your TC apart from everyone else?
He just has a very unique personality. Like, at first you think he’s just like others but then you get to know him and learn he’s so much more.
Day 3: If you were able to sing a song to your TC, what would it be and why?
Oh god, I wouldn’t sing at all because my voice is horrible, haha.
Day 4: What fictional character does your TC resemble?
I thought about Newt Scamander at first but then again, I’m not sure.
Day 5: If your TC called you beautiful, how would you react or respond?
I’d be really happy and thank him. And I’d most likely think about it for ages.
Day 6: What landmark in the world best describes your TC?
I don’t know if it counts, but the Goethe–Schiller Monument in Weimar reminds me of him. For reasons. c:
Day 7: Do you think you’ll stay in contact with your TC after you leave? If you’ve already left, have you?
I hope so!
Day 8: Can you think of any advice for somebody currently crushing on their teacher?
I’m really bad at giving advice because I’m pretty sure I never make the right decisions either, haha.
Day 9: Have you ever gone somewhere with you TC non-school related?
Nope. But I’ve bumped into him outside of school several times.
Day 10: Has your TC ever complimented you? Either appearance or personality?
Kind of. I don’t know if he said it because he thought he needed to cheer me up.
Day 11: Do you have a favourite outfit for your TC?
Too many, really.
Day 12: Have you ever cried in front of your TC? How did they react?
I didn’t.
Day 13: If your TC named their child after you, how would you feel?
Flattered, but it’d be kinda weird.
Day 14: What has been your best moment with you TC?
When he asked me to walk a few steps with him and talked to me even though it wasn’t necessary in any way.
Day 15: Has your TC ever flirted with you, be it playfully or seriously?
Nope.
Day 16: Have you ever stalked them on social networking sites? If so, how often?
..I don’t think I’m even able to count how often I googled him..
Day 17: Describe your TC in three words
Kind, humble, special.
Day 18: Do you have any nicknames for each other?
No.
Day 19: Have either of your parents met your TC? If so what did they think of him/her?
They’ve seen him but I’m not sure what they think of him.
Day 20: Are you or have you crushed on another teacher before? What happened?
Yes, he’s the reason I made this blog. We grew apart though and I don’t feel anything for him anymore, not even in a friendship kind of way.
Day 21: Have you ever met your TC’s partner/wife/husband? What was it like?
I did see her this year but I didn’t talk to her or anything. I’ve randomly seen her like five times after that though which was kinda weird.
Day 22: Imagine your school is asking students to write an article on student teacher relationships and you’ve been asked to help. What sort of thing would you want to put in the article?
We’ve actually discussed this in class once and I literally have no idea. I think I’d say that even though I understand why some people might think it’s a problem, I think you shouldn’t let the law decide if you’re allowed to be in love or not.
Day 23: How do you imagine your TC’s body to be like?
I’m happily leaving this question out.
Day 24: What would you do if you found your TC blog which was devoted to you?
If I was 100% sure it was him blogging about me, I think I’d text him about it.
Day 25: Has anybody in your school (students or teachers) noticed any inappropriate or unusual behavior between the two of you?
No.
Day 26: Has your TC ever said something to you to make you think they may like you?
Of course, but I’m sure that I just keep overinterpreting stuff.
Day 27: If teacher-student relationships were legalized, would you tell them how you felt?
No.
Day 28: What do you imagine your TC doing right now?
Sleeping.
Day 29: Do you ever see yourself dating somebody your own age? Why or why not?
To be honest, no. I don’t even look out for boys my age anymore and I haven’t for a longer while.
Day 30: If your TC told you they were leaving, what would you do?
Cry and talk to him. Also, I think I’d ask him if we could stay in contact.
Day 31: Describe your perfect date with your TC?
It’d be perfect if he was there, that’s it.

I am sad to see that people are happy about it that this Series gets bad critic. All in all it was a wonderful show. A lot of times better than most of the things that are in tv. I agree that S4 wasn’t the best, pretty a-typical for Sherlock and that I’d have liked something else more too. But the writers have different vision than we do. It’s fine to give some personal critic but...
..to hate on something because your ship doesn’t get canon, that’s a different thing. I’m a Johnlock shipper as well but I was never under the illusion that they’d become canon - the writers said it all too often. It was not what they wanted this show to be about (and frankly I agree. One point I find so great about this show is that personal matters like sexuality, relationships etc aren’t a topic, which means that they don’t matter. It wouldn’t change a thing whether Sherlock is hetero, bi, homo etc. Awesome message they do there I think! To show that sexuality doesn’t determine someone’s personality which should be common knowledge but isn’t.) and while they toyed with the idea that there might be something between them, it was just for entertainment and surely for the rumours that have been there since Sherlock was.
If I imagine to be the writer/producer of this show, I’d be horribly disappointed. Why do people focus on a ship instead of the whole of the show? I do not udnerstad. Even if, what I sometimes read in the comments, it helped you through some personal shit, which is awesome!, it doesn’t change the fact that nobody owes you anything. It’s their show and their vision. You just want to happen what you like.
But I don’t even have to imagine how the writers feel because I know how I as a Sherlock fan feel. Reading all this determined hate and disappointed, it ruined the experience for me personally. Knowing that when the thing that some people want to happen doesn’t happen, that then they’d do what they’re doing now - talking abd about the show, leaving bad reviews and claiming the writer of queerbaiting - that ruined it for me. It’s horrible how an adult can think that this is okay and even worse: that this would change soemthing. If it does something, then that those people won’t write a show anymore and that’d be a shame since we all can agree on that fact that Sherlock was an awesome show.
I like Johnlock a lot, I personally think they do have something romantic going on but that doesn’t mean it has to be shown or confirmed. I thought we were over the whole ‘overinterpreting’ stage when we passed aged 14.
I feel sorry. For the writer/producer/actors to get this response. For the fans who feel like me, and worse, since some receive hate because they don’t feel the same as tjlcers. I feel sorry that this is the response you’re putting out there for a great show that does indeed lack in the last season and hasn’t made your ship canon.
I am sad about this.
