The Set Up: Part 1

An introduction to Ella Evans, the (willing and totally consenting) sacrificial lamb to my #getmarcusmorenolaidchallenge (see my Set It Up drabble)

Summary: Seeking an experienced teacher to lead an exciting new classroom! Grades K-8, all core subjects, experience with gifted students a must. Ella Evans just wants this interview to go well. Fate had other plans.

(Eventual) Pairing: Marcus Moreno x OFC (I am categorically terrible at 1st person writing, thus the creation of this character)

Rating: PG-13 lite.

Warnings: light swearing, OFC checks out Marcus because duh. Second-hand embarrassment from foot in mouth. Eventual fluff and smut, but slow burn here.

Ella Evans checks herself over in the bathroom mirror of her modest apartment for the umpteenth time. She had managed to sweep her unruly thick hair into a low bun, though a few waves have already escaped, and her makeup is simple; a little bit of blush and mascara to frame her green-grey eyes. Dressing for an interview always resulted in her agonizing for hours, trying to land on what struck a balance between professional without being overdone. After trying on every combination of skirt, blouse, dress, and dress pant she owned (which was admittedly a small selection but enough to make problematic combinations), she landed on a knee length navy pencil skirt with a crisp red blouse. The only thing that Ella didn’t struggle to narrow down was a pair of sleek black flats; tripping over her own two feet because she attempted to strut in heels was not how she wanted this interview to go. And Ella would be the first to admit that she is far from graceful and with a profession that required hours on her feet, there was no sense in suffering unnecessarily.

The job itself was exciting enough, assuming of course she made it past the first interview. A one class, all subjects K-8 position with highly competitive pay. Given the range of ages and the discretely advertised “excellent teacher to student ratio,” Ella knew it likely meant some intense behaviors or needs amongst the kids. But then again, those had always been the kids that Ella loved most: the ones other teachers “couldn’t handle.” It was hokey, but those were her babies. The fact that the position would also be another 10 grand a year was huge, and would be the push Ella needed to go back to school for another masters. Maybe she could even save up to travel. No getting ahead of myself, she chides herself gently.

Casting one last nervous glance in the mirror, Ella steels herself with a reminder: I’m a good teacher, and I can do this. On the way out, she grabs her work bag, a worn leather tote with lesson samples, extra copies of her resume and a few other essentials. The details that the school head, a Ms. Granada, has sent her were vague at best, enough so that Ella had briefly entertained the idea of this being a scam. A quick google search though had yielded enough information though to explain that it was a newer program for tweens and the application process posted was impressive. Worst case scenario? She would bolt for doors. Considering her current work environment, more specifically the human slug of boss she had endured for over 5 years now since moving to the area, anything would be an improvement. Hell, I’d work for an alien at this point, she thinks sullenly.

It only takes a half hour for her to arrive at the coffee shop where the interview was taking place. “Due to massive renovations to our campus taking place this summer, we are unable to hold interviews at our site. We will be holding all interviews off-site and appreciate your understanding.” That’s what the follow up email had said when Ella learned she had an interview. Truthfully, Ella is almost relieved for a more informal environment, especially considering how nervous she is. So when Ella strolls into the small cafe a solid 15 minutes before her scheduled time, she takes a deep breath and tries to calm her nerves.

Glancing around, Ella can’t see anyone she imagines to be the interview team. She spots a handful of children perched in a booth with mugs of chocolate milk and stacks of coloring books spread out; the booth to the left hosts five women, slowly sipping their drinks and laughing lightly as they glance over every once in a while. The sight makes Ella smile. Several teens or possibly even college students are scattered around, headphones on all of them as they stare mutely at their variety of devices. Beyond that, there are only a few other strays in the small shop, none dressed so formally as to make her assume they’re here to hire. It’s enough time to order a drink and try and calm her nerves.

As she winds her way up to the counter to order, she is a mere four feet away the bar when she manages to trip on, well, nothing really. A hot flash of adrenaline spikes through her chest as she sails forward, but the panic settles slightly when she inexplicably doesn’t fall. The shock of the near miss reels back, just in time for her to notice what saved her. Or more specifically, who. Two hands are sealed to her arms, and slowly, she is pulled backwards and righted to her feet. It takes Ella a minute to calm her racing heart enough to turn and meet her savior, but the face she finds really does nothing ground her. No one should look that damn good on a Wednesday morning in a freaking coffee shop. And have lightning fast reflexes to boot.

Rich, warm brown eyes study her carefully, dark brows knit in worry. Even behind the glasses he wears, his gaze traps her on the spot as he looks her over carefully. And Ella, almost involuntarily, returns the favor. Dressed in a pair of nice jeans, a pale blue button up, and a leather jacket, he’s the picture of confidence, though the gentleness in his eyes puts her at ease. His skin is golden, and his strong jaw and full lips are dappled with a line of dark hair. He’s distractingly handsome, and it takes longer than is decent for Ella to realize that he’s speaking to her.

“Miss, are you okay? Can you hear me?” Ugh, even his voice is nice, she thinks ruefully, but then the bell hanging by the front door of the shop chimes and Ella snaps back to reality. Her head snaps up suddenly and she cranes around the Adonis of a man in front of her to see a gorgeous woman stroll in. She’s dressed impeccably in a white skirt suit, complete with terrifying black stilettos and an impossibly nice leather attaché in tow.

“Oh shit,” Ella mutters, much to the confusion of the man who is still very much so holding onto her arms. “I am so sorry!” She finally manages to say, looking frantically at the clock on the wall. Her interview is in 3 minutes. “I’m so— I mean, I mean thank you,” words spill from her lips as she watches the elegant woman take a seat at a large table near the window and immediately take out a stylus and tablet. Double shit. She looks back to her rescuer, whose eyes are crinkling in a mixture of confusion and mirth. “Seriously, thank you, and I’m sorry, for the, for swearing,” two minutes until her interview, “it wasn’t at you, or anything, it’s just...I just have this big interview in a few minutes and now my nerves are completely shot all to hell.” The confession falls off her tongue before she can stop herself, but she’s silenced when the man suddenly drops her arms. Those dark brows suddenly crease in the middle and the pouty mouth grimaces a little. A look of pity, she thinks, as she has succeeded in making a fool of herself in more ways than one. Before Ella can wedge her foot even more firmly in her mouth, the stunning woman in white appears beside them quite suddenly.

“Ah, Marcus,” she speaks, her voice sultry and sure. The man, Marcus, returns a tight smile and then glances back at Ella with sympathetic eyes. “I see you have already met our candidate, Ms. Evans.” All of the blood drains from Ella’s face then, and the pit that settles in her stomach is a heavy thing. Suddenly, she wishes she had just knocked herself out cold on the coffee shop floor. In absence of reasonable injury, Ella settles for closing her eyes for a quick moment and saying a prayer to be struck down by lightning. The woman, Ms. Granada, waves a manicured hand to the small table she procured across the shop. “Shall we?”

My first scribbling, which turned to be my own story and years later that became a part of my life..Never believed in miracle but it happened!

JOURNEY FOR LIFE TIME

It was a rainy day, when I board my train from Chennai to my native Bangalore for a vacation after a long time. Spending time with my family is the best part of my life and being with my little sister who is so attached to me, makes me more Happy. Though she is grown up now and pursuing her 1st year of College But still she is kiddo for me. Our bond was like thick and thin. Since it was raining heavily and station seems to be messy all over. Finally I found my coach A2-42 yeah it’s an AC coach since it was a last minute booking all the tickets in second class was full and my dad booked in first class which I hate to travel. People here seem that they are wealthy than others and show up their attitude problem and more over this coach will be in pin drop silent. Always I would prefer the non ac with breeze atmosphere. Keeping these thoughts in mind ,finally arranged my luggage as they were too heavy to be placed thou the things in my bag is not mine and those were for my sister who sent me a big list to be bought for her. The train started, I pushed away the curtains aside and sat near the window to enjoy the rain that showers on the glass slowly like a dew drop on a flower. As it goes by, I started reading the magazine which I bought in the station, to make myself not to be bored. Suddenly my phone beeps “new message from adithi “. Every time I see my sister name in text I start smiling because she sends me the funniest text that will burst me into laugh. So with the same expectation I opened the text but this time it was a different and shocking thou."Adithi: guess you’re in train. Just listen and don’t react too much to what I say now. Dad and Mom have seen a girl for you and they wanted you to meet their family in this visit. So be prepared for the surprise. And don’t dream too much. happy journey. See you tomorrow. Cya” As train started moving I lost my network signal and was not able to reply her back. But I was still in shock moreover a mixed emotion surprised, imagining, happy that I'm going to meet someone new, expecting how she will be. Running these things in mind I started smiling. And the train stopped in next station with a jerk. With the same smiling face I lifted up and saw the window “a spark” a girl crossed me in blue attire and I went nearby to the glass window to check whether whom she was. But I missed to see her as the train started off. From my College days I use to admire pretty girls and it became a habit. And most of my friends were into love so they will be asking me to fall for one so that I can enjoy my love life as well. I'm not a person who is against love; I admire relationship as I use to love my parents bond a lot. They are the best couple I have ever seen they fight, they tease they do all the things together But their unconditional love is still lasting forever. I was waiting for a girl who will be just like them. Sudden thought struck my mind “will the girl whom my parents saw will be like this or totally opposite? “ I just nodded my head to myself in confusion. A sound from behind, a girls voice on phone “yeah mom I'm in train yeah had my dinner. Hope you and dad had. Going to be seated (she sat and gave me smile of hi). Don't worry about me mom tomorrow I will be there before you to trouble you again. (She giggled). Love you too mom... Bubye” She didn't notice me as I was watching her for a long time as she was busy keeping her things in perfect manner. Yeah it’s the same spark that came again; the same girl whom I missed to see a few minutes back is just opposite to me. “God is really great u know “my mind speaks. To no doubt she is the prettiest girl I have ever seen. She was looking beautiful in her blue tees with denim jean, with long wet hair that was dancing here and there, and was about to kiss her cheeks. She was not fair but her honey brown complexion made me stare at her beauty. What a girl she is? I was kept on admiring her and went off to dreams. Sudden voice “hi adithiya”. To pleasant surprise it was her voice But How come she knows my name. With a shocking expression I greeted her back. She saw my confused face and started smiling. “Hey adi chill don’t confuse too much. I just saw your name next to mine while checking in the list. And that's how I came to know”. Oh finally I was relaxed from the confusion state and loved the way she called me “adi”. I got over excited and gave my hand forward to introduce myself formally this is Adithiya Ravi and you? In return she shook back with a smile and said “Amrita”. So our conversation started off by then!

Am: so going to Bangalore or?

Ad: yeah to Bangalore my family stays there and I work here, as a developer in oracle. (adithiya don’t give too much information first make her comfortable then you can say your stories so I just finished off with a smile ).

Am: hey that's cool so you’re into software field quite opposite to mine. I'm heading to Bangalore as well. My native place with a huge family who stays there (she smiles). I'm working in a private concern as an asset creative head for daily news paper. You know what the best part in my life is my job. I just enjoy each and every day (ad: omg she talks more than me a chatterbox? Na na a cute little girl " she was keep on describing about her work thou I was not listening I was just admiring her reactions). Oops am I boring you sorry I'm like this it’s very difficult to close my mouth once it’s opened. So tell me going for vacation adi?

Ad: (Uffff again she calls me adi, girl don’t make me fall for you)

Am: helloooo dreamer?

Ad: sorry what did u ask?

Am: are you going for vacation?

Ad: (should I need to say about my girl whom my parents saw? No no no ways I don’t want to say this is at first) Ohhh yea!!

Am: great!! It's fun na meeting our family members after a long time.

Ad: you’re true it’s adorable.

Am: alright adi it’s getting late I will catch up with some sleep. Have to get up early na. Cya morning! Happy night dreamer (she smiles).

Ad: (What??? so soon we end up our conversation? God this is not fair) alright amrita sleep well. Good night.

“She slept off in another half an hour. I was still awake thinking about her and admiring. It was a small conversation but the most memorable one. (Wish she should be the girl whom my parents saw) a thought in my mind and I slept with a smile. Next day we got up with a morning wish and got from train. She said it was nice talking to you adi and bid bye. It was the last time I saw that smiling face. I moved from the station and came out where my dad was waiting.

Dad: hi adithiya how was your journey?

Ad: (journey for life time dad I met my dream girl and missed her in the same journey). Yea dad it was good.

Dad: get in adithiya. We have to reach home early. Noon we are going to a restaurant to meet my friends family.

Ad: (me and dad are moreover like Good friends) what for dad? I asked as if I don’t know.

Dad: adithi didn't tell you about this? We saw a girl for you.

Ad: (thought I would try to find amrita somehow because her thoughts were still disturbing me) yea she said But not today.

Dad: sorry son it’s all prepared and we are going.

We reached home had chit chat with all and her thought in mind. My sister was busy seeing her gifts I bought her and mom in getting ready for restaurant. None was there to share and I felt disturbed. So I slept for some time.

Mom: get ready adithiya it’s getting late.

Finally we all were ready to go and we reached the place. Best restaurant in Bangalore. We booked one private small open space for both the families. As I entered, I heard a loud girls voice she was narrating some story but quite familiar voice. I was thinking about that and sat in one corner. Both the families greeted and sat down by then. All of sudden a girl came in with pink Saree. She was stunning in Saree than I saw her the previous night. Yea it was amrita whom I met on the train. I busted in happiness and tears were like moist in my eyes. I couldn't believe it myself. She gave me the same cute smile and came closer to me. As others were in silents. She stood before me and to my surprise she bend down on her knees with a ring popping out of her fingers.

“Adiii

Let Rain being the witness

As it pours down upon us,

I confess my love to thee,

Will you accept my love?

And Me?”

I couldn't control my tears and it started rolling down.

Am: adii accept me soon na my knees are paining, later you have carry me wherever I go (she giggles).

I lifted her up an accepted her and our love. Gave a kiss on her forehead. All started laughing and smiles all over. They left us alone after d event. She sat next to me holding my hand and said adi "our journey became a lifetime ".

And the Miracle that happened in my life...

I met my husband through matrimonial site and it just happened. We started liking each other even before seeing nor our families know about this. We never know when we even formally proposed nor said I LOVE YOU until we started talking 24/7. We were in distance relationship. After a month of knowing each other, he just flew to my place to hold my hands and say to the world that she is my girl. I never knew the my husband and my dream guy in the story are working in oracle domain. And the girl I portrait-ed in the story is all about ME. This is how I wanted to fall for someone and show them my extreme love and I wanted to go down on Knee and propose my guy. But I still didn't find the right moment to do for my husband till date, this is my biggest wish in my life.

6 mistakes I’ve already made in New Zealand

6 is a weird number, I know but, I tried to think of 10 and realised that I’ve done pretty well so far, to say that I didn’t really know what I was doing when I came out travelling here in New Zealand.

I’ve only been here for just over a week so I think 6 mistakes is great. But these are tiny things that most people probably wouldn’t even think of so don’t follow in my footsteps and read this post on what NOT to do!

1. Planning my flight to get in at midnight

This was probably the worst of the mistakes I have made throughout this whole post which is why I have placed it first to make sure you don’t do this.

The thing is with getting an international flight into a foreign country isn’t just the fact that you’re going to be knackered in general but it all the things you have to do whilst you’re knackered. For example: after collecting my bag from the conveyor belt and getting through customs I then had to order a taxi. I chose Uber as I thought that this would be the safest way to travel to my hostel. It’s tracked and you can clearly see who’s picking you up. This leads me to another mistake I made. We’ll call this mistake #1.5.

1.5. Cards/ travel cash cards

Make sure your travel cash card or credit card that you were going to use in your new country is attatched to your phone already! Mine wasn’t and I was paying for my taxi ride + all sorts of bananas and breakfast stuff for the next day with my Apple Pay alread set up wth my British bank and god knows how much they charged me for using that!

1. Back to number one

So, as I was saying I was incredibly tired and I got to my first hostel at around 1:30am. I’d never been in a hostel before and I was lugging around my big backpack, along with my carry on. Luckily I let the hostel know that I was going to be late checking in and someone was there at reception helping me check in. But the real problem began with the room as it was pitch black and I didn’t want to wake any of my roomates up with noise that I was making! I had to rustle through my bag to find my toiletries and then had to take everything out so I could find my PJ’s and clothes for the next day as I did not want to have to repeat my actions again in the morning.

Tired and jet-lagged I went into the shared toilet and got myself sorted only having to go back in the room and make my bed. Nightmare. It felt like one thing after another. Trust me when I say that arriving in your hostel at midnight is the worst. I definitely did not make friends that night. I only got about 2/3 hours of sleep that night as I was due to be picked up by a tour bus at 7! I think I’m only just shaking off the bags under my eyes from then.

2. Not checking if I need a Visa

I bet you’re thinking - Lucy this is probably the first thing I would’ve checked, and you’d be right to think that as I did the same. As soon as I booked my flights to New Zealand back in March I did exactly that as I checked all the countries I was planning on flying to including NZ. The government site told me that there was no Visa required for a British citizen to enter the country and so I went on with my travel plans not thinking of that as an issue again.

Fast-forward to October 12th. I’m at the check-in desk at Manchester airport with a huge grin on my face and the lady saw where I was flying to and asked me if I’ve got my Visa. I said no, with confidence, and there becomes my issue. “No problem” she says, “just buy one online now and it might come through today”. MIGHT. You can tell that I massively panicked on the inside and held the tears in, thinking that I wasn’t organised and made a mistake. I mean, I literally wasn’t even a big deal as it only took like 5 mins for the e-mail confirmation to come through but after months of planning you wouldn’t think the last thing to get for the trip wouldn’t be at the 11th hour at the check-in desk.

So, moral of the story is double check EVERYTHING. I don’t care if you got confirmation of your hotel reservation months ago. Check again just in case you got the wrong date or the wrong room. Check to see if you need a Visa the week before you leave for your trip just in case they change the regulations like mine did! October 1st 2019 they changed the regulations... 11 days out. Bloody typical.

3. Not asking for a window seat

I’m the type of passenger who likes their room. I’m an aisle seater because I like to stretch out and go to the toilet without having to ask the person next to me to get up. But in this instance I was on the 2nd leg of my flights and I got an aisle seat, however I knew I wanted to sleep on this flight and it would’ve been much more comfy if I was leaning against the side of the plane. What did actually end up happening is that I fell asleep on the aisle seat and the two guys next to me we’re pretty much bursting for the loo and didn’t want to wake me. Bless them. They pretty much charged passed me as soon as I woke up. I don’t blame them. But also, as I was asleep I was being knocked by all the trolleys and cabin crew down the aisle so I really didn’t get a decent night sleep. If I had just asked to switch I’m sure they would have obliged as I think the aisle is the favourite.

4. Not bringing enough warm clothing

This is a big one as well! Why did I think going to New Zealand in the Spring time would mean sun all the time. It doesn’t. So far I’ve spent most of my time in my one jumper I brought with me and my leggings. Not once have I worn my shorts as it’s just too bloody cold for that. And I’m in the North island! I can’t imagine how cold it is down South.

I pretty much packed 5 t-shirts and 2 long-sleeved t-shirts (just in case it was cold 🙄) and about 12 vest tops. What an idiot. I’ve already done a load of washing since that’s all I’ve worn. Gloves and hats have also been worn so don’t underestimate a well-known warm (kind of) country being flipping freezing most of the time.

5. Bringing too much cash

It’s always good to bring a load of cash because you never know when you’ll need it. Most places take card these days but a lot of the time there’s the option of paying cash. I found myself using my travel cash card more than anything as it’s obviously the most efficient way for me to pay my accomodation on my phone and activities I was doing. So, I saw my balance going down on my card and I still had a load of cash that I just couldn’t really use for any of the common things I was paying for. So I’m kinda trying to use up my cash so I don’t have loads to carry around with me and to make me feel better about not seeing my bank balance decrease severely each week. Really, I think cash should be used in emergencies. There’s not really a time you’d need unless you were somewhere remote but, it is a good idea to keep hold of some.

6. Not bringing talcum powder to the beach

I think this is a widely know travel tip now but if you don’t know here we go. I was at Hot Water Beach, Hahei a couple days ago and we got the chance to dig a hole in the sand and relax in the hot bath it created from the water. It was such a relaxing experience however, afterward standing up in the cold wind, sand flying everywhere and feeling the sand in your bikini bottoms from the bath it was the most uncomfortable experience as everywhere hurt! Now, if I had talcum powder with me I could’ve covered myself in it which dries up all the moisture on my body, allowing the sand to fall off easy. I had to sit on a bus for 30mins with the sticky sand on my body, itching me. When I could’ve used talc and felt relaxed. Good tip.

Those were my top 6 mistakes I’ve made already in New Zealand and I’m sure there’s loads more to come. I hope this had helped you see the small details of travelling and how to avoid these mistakes. We headed out in the morning to a town called Gubbio which is an archaeologically important part of the world. The gorge created there over 2-3 million years.In 1970, a geologist found a layer of Iridium in the area. Iridium, very rare on Earth but common in space and the scientists of the world decided that this is where the meteorite that was 100 to 200 km in diameter hit Earth which killed all the plants which ultimately killed all the 65 million years ago. Kind of like the big Bang theory where life started all over again. We walked all over the town looking for more information about this but couldn't find any information booth or much about the big Bang theory. We got to the main plaza which I might add is again on the side of a hill and had a nice conversation at lunch with a British lady who was waiting for her family to visit the cathedral. It was very hot and we decided to go back to the hotel because we couldn't find the archaeological museum. I actually got back to the hotel and did some more research, We found out that the town has a famous open air lift to the top of the mountain that was very near the plaza we were in but we didn't see any signs of it so we missed taking a trip up the side of a mountain in what is essentially a bucket lift. That would have been a hoot. Oftentimes on our trips we find out things after the fact because we can't get good information and we don't read Italian, French, Dutch, etc. We always have a good time. On our way to dinner that night a fierce thunderstorm was coming across the valley towards Assisi, great lightning show. We just made it to our Albanian restaurant for pizza as the storm hit. We took our usual seat near the counter and the waiter said you came back from the pizza. Of course we got the Neopolitanna pizza and he was gracious enough to put all the anchovies on one side of the pizza for me. The place got pretty busy because the people were driven out of the rain into the nearest restaurant. The waiter said it's either busy when people are out and about when it starts raining or if they are still at their hotel they just eat there. The food was as delicious as it was the 1st time. As we left we got a fond farewell from the waiter who was a very kind find young man who spoke very good English and I thought he was going to hug me, but we shook hands and I slipped him a generous tip. I think the people in the restaurant were just wondering why we were talking so friendly. June 16 We had a great breakfast and there was a bus load of tourists there so it was kind of noisy but not a bad noise. As we left, we stopped to thank the man who was cleaning up and making sure that everything was proper in the buffet as we were eating. He was very surprised that we would stop and thank him and the staff for a very pleasant visit. He said he had worked in the United States for 4 years in New York, Baltimore, San Francisco and LA, training for his job in the resort hotel chain he now works for. We had a fantastic interchange and he knew how to say Baltimore (Balmore). Checking out was nice as well because our friend Andrea was there to help us check out and he appreciated us thanking him for his personal service. Sometimes I think the service industry in America should send some people out here to be trained in how to treat their clients. We headed out for Modena, the next stop on our journey to visit the Ferrari museums and hopefully the world heritage site. We hit a bit of a traffic jam that lasted almost an hour in Bologna and we got in another one just as we were nearing the Modena exit, so we were able to get out of that and get to our hotel. It is a very large room in a nice hotel in a somewhat industrial/residential area. We went to the Enzo Ferrari home and private museum before dinner. That place was fantastic and we met a young couple living in Switzerland. The man is from Dortmund and the lady is from Switzerland. They have an adorable, probably the 17 month old baby. She is a child psychologist and he works in logistics, moving materiel around the world. I got to drive a formula one Racer for 7 minutes and a simulator at the museum. I drove the Le Mans race course. I could drive an automatic or use the paddles on the left and right of the steering wheel to change gears. The attendant man told me to really really get on the break when I need to slow down for the curves verse and not to wiggle the steering wheel or the car will spin out . I did really well for the 1st 4 minutes for a minute but got a little excited and spun out on one of the turns. I was probably hitting 200 miles an hour on the straight away ( I saw another person going 300+KPH on another simulator) before you had to slow down quickly and take the S curves before heading to another straight away. I only spun out the one time and Elizabeth was taping the run and listening to the guy who was telling her that I was doing a good job. It was bare knuckle I can tell you. But it was a lot of fun and I was able to make several circuits of the course and my best time was 2 minutes and 40 seconds. He told me that the best drivers in the world do it in one minute and 40 seconds so my time was very fast for someone who just sat down in a formula 1 car. I thought I was gonna make it all the way through without spinning out but it’s really hard to slow down really fast before a turn and keep that steering wheel straight because it is very loose. All in all it was a really good time. At dinner tonight we could only find 2 people who spoke English and one of them was a young lady who was born in Greece of Italian heritage and studied English in school and really liked it. I swear you would not know she wasn't an American when she helped us with our menu. We told her we had visited the Peloponnese peninsula and that's where she was born. She had not been to the Island of Spetses, but she knew of it and we told her if she goes home to go to the 7 islands hotel. When we left, Elizabeth gave her her “business” card so if she comes to America we can assist her in things to do and maybe she will visit us.

June 17

We headed over to the Ferrari factory for the second Museum about the Ferrari car. It was very interesting and comprehensive. More technical than the Enzo Ferrari Museum with many more examples of Ferraris from first one to the last few years. It's too much to describe in words and unfortunately we are not able to transfer pictures from my camera to my phone to include in the blog. I thought I had everything worked out, but technology being what it is, the Wi-Fi connection here is not good enough to connect the camera to the phone. We nearly drove over to the main Plaza which has a UNESCO World Heritage Site. we wandered around town for a couple of hours looking at the old buildings in the architecture which is fascinating. it was getting pretty hot so we just had it back to her Hotel about 2. We rested up and went to our favorite restaurant next door for coffee and pastry. We will drive to a small town in Switzerland tomorrow morning for a way station to Frankfurt. We will be in Frankfort on the 19th, getting ready to come back on the 22nd. We might be able to see my other “daughter” Sandra one more time before we leave. We will stay in a hotel at the airport the night of the 21st to get up for our early morning flight on the 22nd. I will try to post some pictures if I can get the camera to connect to my phone again otherwise when I return to the States.

THE REAL EXPERIENCE X4

I couldn’t tell you how excited I was to request tickets to my all time favorite talk show, The Real again for a 3rd and 4th time! As soon as I booked my flight to California I just kept waiting for the month to pop up on their site to request for dates I would be there. My whole trip to California since 2016 was and still is all about working around attending The Real. No way I would visit California and not attend the show. My first experience at the show, as you may know, was amazing but this trip and experience was probably the most special. Why? Well, you will just have to read on to find out more!

On Tuesday, January 23rd 2018 (My 1st official day in California) I had gotten up to head straight to LA to head to Warner Brothers Studios to attend The Real Talk Show for a 3rd time (If you count my first two from my 2016 visit). The audience check in was around 10:30am. So my card they handed me at the start of the line, I think I was around 13th. Once through the check in, we got to just relax and chat for a bit. Said hello to the audience staff/crew members who immediately recognized me from my 2016 trip. They are all so fun to talk to and along the way met some new friends. I headed over to The Real Red Carpet and Step and Repeat for a few photo memories. As it got closer to heading in the more excited I got. Long walk to the studio but we made it in and first person I just had to say hello to was Bridget but I kind of held back until she started taking all of the audience members’ photos in front of the stage. That is one of many things I love about the show and crew. They are pretty open to allowing you to take photos of and around the set while waiting for the show to start and are just super friendly and open. I waited until my group, which was pretty much last. I was one of the last ones in line, and as soon as Bridget saw me in line she recognized me! Was so great to see her again and her energy and spirit is just so inspiring. To do what she does all day everyday takes a lot. Anyways, so we took a photo together which was very special and then headed back to my seat. I sat around the same area as always and was super excited for the show to start! As Bridget was warming up the audience, I just tried to take everything in. Once the show started, I listened and took in everything they spoke about. I do remember they did mention about following your dreams but how you should always have a backup plan. I immediately just wanted to break into tears because right now I am having a really hard time trying to find myself in the mist of what I truly am meant to do. Turning 30 next month, in process of trying to find a job (at moment kind of just need to take anything but don’t have much experience job wise (just kind of all over the place after taking care of my grandma for a few years and had gone through few preschool jobs and realized it just wasn’t for me). I do have a two year college degree just at the moment I feel stuck, and yes a lot of it obviously is me but I guess it kind of correlates with what Jeannie was saying too during the chat. I have never really been that confident in myself which in turn definitely has affected me. Ok ok, enough about me. So on with about the show. Once the show ended, I truly wanted to try to capture a photo with at least Adrienne who if you have read my previous blogs, I really truly admire and look up a ton. I kind of walked up to where Tamera was taking a photo and tried to catch her attention. I mentioned to Tamera that I run one of her fan accounts on Twitter and have been for years. She actually did know to a point who I was because i had recently written her giving her a heads up that I was coming to the show. After she gave me a hug, I quickly asked Tamera if I could take a photo with her. To meet her and be able to actually get the courage to say hi to Tamera, someone who I grew up watching on TV through my sisters was an incredible feeling. Then as I was walking towards the exit I spotted Jeannie and kind of caught her attention. Jeannie did recognize me from my recent posts on Instagram and my blog posts I had mentioned to her I wrote about Adrienne and the show. Jeannie then gave me the warmest hug. I again quickly asked Jeannie for a photo. Just as Adrienne was about to head out I asked if I could get a photo with her. As the audience walked out, we were handed our surprise gift which was the 2018 Grammy CD (Yes it is on my phone already!) As I was walking out from the show I looked back at my photos and realized this visit to The Real was one very special and probably most memorable one.

Wednesday, January 24th 2018 was again another full day in LA and my 4th visit to The Real. I started out meeting for a few photoshoots for my online magazine (At the moment more of a hobby) since the call time to attend The Real this day was a bit later, 12:30pm. The check in was basically the same as the day before, although on my card they gave me this time said #1. LOL! I was one of the first audience members there so it made sense. I was super ready for another day at The Real. I took more photos on the Step and Repeat and Red Carpet. As I we walked to the studio I couldn’t help but think back to the day before for some reason I just couldn’t get it out of my mind. They seated me again pretty much in the same spot on the right side of the audience. Bridget spotted me again, and I was really happy to see her smiling face again! Now this was the third show they were getting ready to film in one day and everyone was pretty exhausted at least I am pretty sure they were LOL! Bridget took photos of pretty much any audience member who wanted one, and again I went up in line to grab a photo with her. Once the show ended it kind of went by pretty quick, but I did happen to connect with Tamera again, and took a pretty memorable photo with her this second day that had me laughing so hard (It is my wallpaper on my phone right now LOL!). They handed each of us a water bottle that said The Real on it was was super special and knew I would definitely be using it as much as I could to keep these memories with me. Walking out one of the audience staff members yelled out to another saying “See you Monday”, and to think I was going to flying home then just really kind of made a bit sad to think the most anticipated part of my California Trip was over.

I truly couldn’t have asked for a better two days attending The Real. Everyone who works at the show is super friendly and always feels like home when I come back. The Real I definitely can say is really my “Second Home”. I cannot say enough about how amazing and full of love each and every one in front of and behind the camera are! Bridget always makes me feel right at home and special every time I visit the show! The second I leave a taping I am always thinking about my next trip to come back to the show! I would be there everyday if I could! I could go on and on about this show and each individual who helps make it happen and are who I look forward to seeing work behind the scenes while attending the show! I admire how much energy Bridget brings to each and every show and audience member! Bridget pretty much remembers each individual audience member and THAT truly says something about her with all the fans she sees each and everyday! Each Co-Host brings something unique to the show! Adrienne I can relate to the most and seeing her overcome some of her fears this past year has truly inspired me! Jeannie the joy and smile she brings always seems to brighten my day and has taught me to stay positive no matter what you have gone through we all will come out the other side just fine if you just have Faith. Tamera I love hearing her perspective and her motherly advice. Although I am not a mother, her advice is always so inspiring and her voice and tone is just always so calming. Loni always makes me laugh and brings out the positive even in tough situations. Jennifer Ryan I admire your work and thank you for the support; it was so great to say hello at a recent taping! I cannot forget Evan for making me and all the audience members feel at “home” and although when I came to visit last month and hadn’t for over a year Evan still remembered me! Thank you all for seeing ME. I think The Real deserved its own blog post! Don’t you think?! I just feel something as soon as I arrive at the studios. I can’t stop thinking about the show and the next time I can come visit. My true wish is to spend my 30th Birthday, a Wednesday, at The Real in the audience but my Birthday is March 28th which is coming up very soon, so I doubt it will happen... My 30th Birthday... Dang really? I will be 30?

Steps to synchronize (Zootopia fanfic) : 1st step, come to contact

Sooo I still don’t have posting fanfic site account yet. But that’s not gonna stop me from screaming my obsession towards the dynamic duo. Hope you folks enjoy my first Eng fanfic series.

A red fluffy tail with a dark auburn tip swayed left and right. A fox, a nocturnal mammal himself, was not all alert in the early morning. Therefore, he would rather stroll across the ZPD’s hallway while sipping his coffee. However, he could not help but notice that it was too rowdy for a moment like this. Without further ado, the tod headed to a portly cheetah at the reception desk. Benjamin Clawhauser, the receptionist, greeted him as soon as he clapped eyes on the fox.

“Good morning Wilde~”

“Morning buddy. By the way, why the fuss?”

Nick Wilde, the first fox police officer of ZPD, stopped at the front of the desk and pointed out their surroundings.

“Oh! That reminded me… You might wanna get to Briefing Room quick.”

“Not till my coffee kicks in.”

He yawned and took another sip with eyes half lidded.

“Hopps is already there.”

At that time, Clawhauser saw Nick gulping his coffee down. Luckily, it wasn’t hot or else it would burn his throat, still he coughed as he nearly choked himself from rushing the drink.

“Okay, that hits the spot. Better get going, see you later”

The fox walked off with mock salute. On the cheetah side, he giggled as waving his paw. Throwing an almost empty coffee paper cup in the bin on the side of path, Nick tightened up his tie also sashayed his way into the Briefing room.

“Wilde, you’re here. Great, take you seat.”

As soon as he entered the room, he received the first order of the day from his buffalo captain, Chief Bogo. Nick smirked in response, ready to kick off his day with a little tease.

“Aw Chief, at least greeting would make a decent start of work.”

“Hurry up already!”

“Roger that~”

The tod went to sit down agilely on the same spot, the same chair he shared with his trusty partner, Judy Hopps. Nick greeted a mammal right next to him with sly grin.

“Howdy Doody partner”

“Morning Nick!”

Cheerful as always, the rabbit officer turned her face to meet fox’s gaze. He examined the doe; neat uniform, bright expression and cuteness (according to Nick’s perspective). Then he checked his reflection in her twinkling big round eyes. Mask intact checked, Nick gave his best tempting smile and pointed finger bang both paws at his reflection or so to speak, Judy.

“What was that for?”

Judy inquisitively scrutinized her partner and snorted in amusement.

“Gotta reassure both first officers of certain species look their best.”

“Quit messing around!”

Chief scolded the mischievous officer which seemed like daily routine more or less, so other officers laughed as usual. Nick pretended to zip his mouth and behaved himself. Nonetheless, it was impossible for Nick not to notice that there were not many mammals at that time.

“Okay, I will repeat the case briefly only once. ZPD received an emergency call from a threatened victim who has been harassed by a peculiar culprit apparently having connections with ZIA. In addition, the threat level dramatically shifted when the victim received a threatening letter which stated that the culprit will terrorize an annual event, the Grand Pride Ballroom night. Therefore, we are planning to go undercover in order to protect all participants and secure the place.”

‘Having some agents backing up, I see. No wonder why things kept hidden from cops till issue escalates this much. But with clear menace on specific place and date, that’s more than enough to think of easier solutions than going undercover.’

So many questions had arisen in Nick’s mind. He crossed his arms entire time, paying attention to the case. The fox lifted his paw. After gaining nod in assent from the chief, Nick inquired.

“Ah, who is the victim?”

“You will meet her in private soon. Let me introduce you to her by that time.”

The Cape buffalo replied with an indifferent tone but somehow, Nick found a glimpse of excitement in his supervisor’s stare.

“Hmm”

‘Guess, all my doubts will be cleared by asking the mammal directly, huh?’

Pushing his curiosity aside for moments, the tod put his both paws behind his head.

“Now, everyone’s on the same page, dismissed!”

Making some noise, all the officers in the Briefing room were leaving, so does bunny and fox duo. However, before they could go anywhere, they halted when Chief Bogo commanded them.

“Hopps, Wilde, follow me.”

They jumped down the chair and followed chief to a door on the side of the room, not the one on the back that general officers usually used. The fox whispered to his partner walking next to him. Hopefully, the buffalo did not catch a curious nature of his.

“Hey Carrots, where are we going?”

“Interview room… the victim’s waiting there.”

Judy responded softly, using the same tone as Nick. He continued conversing tenderly.

“I love surprise and everything, still it would be better if at Ieast, I knew who our interviewee is.”

“I don’t really know who she is. I’m counting on you, Mr. Know Everyone.”

The fox sniggered as he faced away from a rabbit’s frisky stare. Shortly afterwards, he sensed the urge to tease the naïve rabbit a bit.

“For this going undercover mission, do you think we will have to dress up, stand around and wait on a sidewalk at night?”

“Nick!”

“Ahem…”

The doe hissed. Fortunately, these two rooms were not far from one another, hence they reached their destination before they could prolong a conversation further, yet Chief Bogo felt the need to remind them to stay professional as he cleared his throat. Since everything seemed to settle down even though Judy pouted slightly at Nick who appeared to enjoy himself, Chief opened a door to enter the Interview room, followed by the other two.

“Good morning officers.”

A slender chestnut haflinger mare with white mark on the forehead, pale mane and tail stood up and greeted. She was wearing a gold long sleeve off-the-right-shoulder tops and a dark red wide leg trousers.

“Good morning Ms. Boeriz. Here are Officer Judith Hopps and Officer Nicholas Wilde. Hopps, Wilde… This is Ms. Cherisse Boeriz, a professional ballroom dancer and event organizer.”

The buffalo gestured to his subordinates and a guest, introducing respectively. Both sides nodded then took the seats. Nick and Judy sat opposite to the horse while Chief Bogo sat kitty-corner from the guest. The rabbit was aware that this mammal in front of her is celebrity but she still did not have that many clues because she never had interest in professional dancing or organizing events. Thereby, she looked at Nick, wonder her partner would know, which was right, Nick knew Ms. Cherisse Boeriz or Cherry Boeriz, a famous ballroom dance athlete and a host of the Grand Pride Ballroom night.

“Excuse me…”

Ms. Boeriz was abased from speaking up at first although it was obvious that she had a silvery voice.

“It might sound really weird and inappropriate under this circumstance… it’s truly such an honor to meet the heroes who saved Zootopia!”

“Oh no no, I’m no hero… I’m not worthy of such compliment…”

Judy hastily protested. Her words became quieter each moment.

‘It was partly my fault anyway…’

The memory of the night howler case rewound. The guilt was coming back soon she recalled how chaotic it was after the press conference… how she damaged society… how she hurt hers…

‘Those droopy ears again… You bunnies really are emotional.’

The fox glanced at his partner, rapidly capturing her body language. He shifted his pupils to focus on a mammal in front of him.

“You look so gorgeous, Ms. Boeriz, even without the makeup and those elegant dresses.”

“You are flattering me, Officer Wilde.”

The horse lifted her hoof to lightly touch her own face which flushed red at the fox’s compliments. Nick added

“It’s a great pleasure to meet you today as well. We’re at your service, Madam.”

“About that… I apologize for bothering you officers but please help me.”

Boeriz’s expression was altered, tensing up, leading to Judy able to pull herself together and concentrate on the mare. Meanwhile,

‘Not bad, Wilde’

Bogo sincerely praised Nick inside his mind, undeniably impressed how the fox handled the situation after noticing his partner’s reaction. He changed the subject and smoothly got back to the job, the simplest way to distract Officer Hopps from her own anguish by helping her focus at work.

“He’d kept asking me out but I’ve rejected all his invitations. He’d hit on me harder and harder. I’ve attempted to request for assist; however, nothing worked… He certainly can conceal almost everything. I can’t stand any longer when I was given a letter, he insisted if I won’t dance with him and accept his proposal during this upcoming Grand Pride Ballroom event, he will make sure I gonna regret it. Therefore, today I approach you straightforwardly.”

Listening attentively, the duo learned more details about the case directly from the victim. They diverted their gaze to Chief. Understanding what was implied, he informed.

“At present, we’ve collected the letter as an evidence.”

They nodded. The doe was the first who reverse her attention to Boeriz.

“You’ve been saying it’s ‘he’, so you know who’s threating you?”

“Yes, I don’t desire to accuse him, yet I’m convinced, it must be Mr. Ralph Poulon.”

Boeriz mentioned a name Judy did not recognize. She averted her eyes from the horse to the fox, her cyclopedia of Mammals in Zootopia.

“He is a haflinger stallion, a director in a few big corporates’ board committee. No surprise we’re dealing with a guy got hook-ups.”

Nick crossed his arms, replying a question Judy had in mind without making eye contact as though he could read her thought. Nick hesitated; nonetheless, he interrogated Boeriz in the end.

“Ms. Boeriz, would it be better if you cancel this year event?”

“No! I mean… I know how dangerous it can be… even so… even I sound so selfish, I do not want the grand pride ballroom night get cancel! Not a single year…”

“It must mean a lot to you.”

Yelling unawarely, the horse became uneasy whereas the anxiety reflected in her eyes. The rabbit sympathized with her, showing empathy in her tone. On the fox’s side, he finally perceived why it was chosen to go through rather inconvenient plan like going undercover.

“Ah, Ms. Boeriz, you are single, correct? Why did you reject Ralph Poulon since the first place?”

“…”

“Oh! I’m sorry! But you were doing right thing. Better not hang around with a crazy stud like that! Ha ha…”

The doe laughed nervously after accidentally asking question by pure curiosity. She did not wish to provoke the mare’s worry any further. Shortly afterwards, Chief Bogo found an opportunity to proceed the true reason of this meeting.

“Okay, let’s cut to the chase, shall we? Ms. Boeriz, you’ve already known we will send our officers to both inside and outside of the ballroom event in order to insure against dangers. Your cooperation is highly appreciated.”

“I’ve organized the Grand Pride Ballroom night every single recent year including this year too, so I know all the layouts. I can provide you info about the timing and place.”

“Thank you. Furthermore, we need the invitation cards for our undercover officers to attend the event like normal participants and dancers. And speaking of dancers, Hopps, please tell Francine, Wolford that they’re selected be disguised ballroom dancers.”

“Noted, just two?”

Judy showed V sign, tilting her head sideways.

“Actually, it’s four, including Wilde and you.”

“What!? Why?”

The doe exclaimed when chief dropped the bomb. The buffalo merely contemplated the rabbit. He raised an eyebrow then declared.

“I thought you agree on this mission.”

“Yes sir…, as participant, I had no clue I gonna be dancer.”

“Well, we intend to cover all the fields possible. Unfortunately, we lack of female officers, so we have to fill you in. Suppose you understand.”

“… Yes sir”

The bunny frowned and avoided eye contact, staring down at the floor. The tod budged himself closer to his partner.

“C’mon Carrots, do it for the team. You can’t expect Chief to wear a dress and fill that role for you… even if he wants to.”

“Watch your mouth, Wilde.”

Bogo sent Nick intimidating aura. The fox grinned fearlessly despite the scare bubbling inside him. That gained a few chuckles from Boeriz. In the meantime, Judy was still concerned.

- .-. .- -. ... .. - .. --- -. ...

In the lonely evening, a Line Up room was occupied. A grey doe wearing a sky blue seamless v-neck T-shirt and navy leggings was swaying back and forth, side to side while an online waltz dancing instruction video was being played from a phone lying next to her. This particular Line Up room she chose suited all sizes of mammals. Consequently, the room was big enough for multiple elephants and a one-way mirror’s bottom edge was low enough for little rodents. There was plenty of room- plus the huge mirror, an acceptable substitute for a dance studio. The rabbit checked her reflection. Both arms were raised to shoulder height, right stretched straight to the side, left bent frontward. She peeked over her feet standing close together. Feeling tense, she sighed and crouched on the floor. The doe slipped a quiet murmur.

“This is ridiculous…”

“Suspect number 1, step forward.”

The familiar voice through a loudspeaker startled her. Judy leapt then stood still like she got paralyzed as her nose twitched swiftly. The door opened, someone coming in.

“You don’t look suspect-ish per se but you ‘hopps’ around alone here, that’s kinda suspicious. Don’t you agree?”

The mammal who walked in made a bad pun which brought the doe sinking down into deeper embarrassment because that clarified the identity of her guest very well.

“What are you doing here, Nick?”

“See, I found lady bunny wandering in the Line Up room, so I wonder what she’s guilty of.”

The fox closed the door behind him. He ambled along, putting his paws in his pockets. The doe observed her partner. He had taken off a regular uniform, revealing a ZPD T-shirt and putting on a sweatpants instead.

“I get that I use this room without a permission but the mission is right around the corner, insufficient time and fund for picking up a dancing class. This is an expedient solution I figured out.”

Her voice wavered. Judy scooped the phone to press a pause then hastily pocketed it, unaware of Nick’s approach.

“Self-learning is admirable but when it comes to dancing, it’s not simple. May I?”

Before the bunny could response, the reynard grabbed the hold of her right paw to his left paw. Her right fingers were placed between his left thumb and first finger. Facing each other, his right arm sloped slightly downwards from shoulder to elbow and lifted her left arm to rest on his right arm, placing his right paw comfortably on her left shoulder blade.

“Yoo-hoo, don’t leave that much gap, Carrots. I won’t bite.”

“Whoa!”

Nick abruptly hauled Judy in, sealing the distance between them. Her cheek bumped against his chest in the process. Being a rabbit herself, her sensitive ears caught his heart beat little bit faster. Judy withdrew her head as she looked up to Nick smirking cunningly.

“Much better~ Your well-built frame gives you a good start. Thus, all you need is a decent mentor.”

“What’s up with-?”

“Lesson 1 relax and follow my lead”

The tod’s lecture cut off the doe. He stepped his left foot forward resulting in her to go back with the right foot to avoid the fox treading on hers. She automatically went side with the left, soon followed by the tod’s right foot then both closed left and right simultaneously. The doe’s ears flicked, once the tod began to move again. She tried to watch his feet movement but her concentration was dragged by a teasing tone.

“Oy! Don’t look down.”

“How I gonna see where you are going if I don’t look at you.”

Judy protested instantly. On the other paw, Nick remained composed.

“You are stressing yourself, Ma’am. You must relax and focus on your surroundings.”

Judy was irritated that Nick acted omniscient. Nevertheless, she admitted Nick had far more experiences than her. She beckoned to him as a sign of affirmation. They repeated the moves, fox’s right leg and bunny’s left leg, opened the fox’s left and the bunny’s right to the side, drew the fox’s right and the bunny’s left in, then closed while Nick was counting ¾ time tempo. Judy was apparently amazed by her partner’s skill.

“I’ve never known you can dance.”

“When you were working for the classy crime boss, you eventually picked up one or two things.”

That emphasized the fact that Nick was ex-con-artist who used to fall in with Mr. Big. The doe somewhat could fantasize the tod suiting up fancily alongside the leader of mafia gang, arranging Gala Night, not the bloodshed one possibly.

“Pardon me, Carrots. Would you mind I ask why practice dancing? I mean… no one will blame you if you dance poorly.”

“It’s a part of a job…My duty… I wanna try my best.”

“Try everything huh? How cute?”

“Don’t call me cute!”

The rabbit yelled but not with pure frustration. There was something else mixed in her display indicated by the blush hidden under her facial fur.

“You are stepping on my foot. Off, off, off.”

The tod’s words made the doe perceive that she unintentionally trampled on his foot. She quickly took her foot off from his.

“I’m sorry!”

“That wasn’t on purpose, was it?”

“Of course not.”

Both had sustained the dance hold. Judy was astonished that they had been practicing so smoothly, barely interrupted. Nick determined to tease his a tiny bit.

Unprepared, Judy was swung clockwise half-turn. She, losing her balance, spread a left foot, toe tapping on the floor. She leaned backward, a heel stomped. Judy blinked at the fox’s figure, bathed by the LED light before being drawn back to stand straight and closed their feet.

“Pretty impressive, Darlin’.”

“The heck, Nick!?”

“Chill out~ No more unforeseen spin.”

The bunny pouted as she resumed following the reynard’s lead. She did not need to look at his feet to chase after his movement most of the time, just staring in those emerald gaze.

“Hey Carrots, remember what you asked Cherry Boeriz earlier?”

“You mean ‘why she’s rejected Ralph Poulon’? Yeah, it was so inappropriate.”

“Hold on. I’m not here to lecture you about propriety. I got the answer for you.”

“Wow! What is it?”

“Because she’s already in relationship.”

“Eh? How do you know that?”

“I don’t know… but I feel it.”

“That’s so half-baked, Slick.”

“Ouch~ how dare you insult my hustler instinct I’ve sharpened over decades.”

Giggling, she soon realized she did not feel agitated anymore and assured that hers, Nick, was truly remarkable.

Witnessing a World Record - Hope & Legacy in Helsinki

I have so many thoughts and stories I want to share from the 2017 World Championships in Helsinki, but I’ll start with Yuzuru Hanyu’s world recording breaking free skate which is obviously the thing I want to talk about most! It’s been 3 days since the men’s free program and the excitement and joy still lingers and has definitely put me in a good mood even as I return to work (hopefully this will last all the way to WTT!). I have a lot to say on this so bear with me as this will be long.

After the men’s SP on Thursday I think many Yuzu fans that I met and spoke with were quite depressed and there were a lot of doom-and-gloom talks going on (would he even medal, will he take silver to Javi AGAIN, etc etc). The one thing we did say repeatedly in our conversations was that it wasn’t over yet, and that he still had a chance to win gold but he would probably need to be clean in order to do so, and that is exactly what he did.

The nervous feeling for the men’s free started up immediately after the pairs free program ended the night before, up until that point that day I was able to distract myself with the other competitions but at that point it felt imminent and real. That night in the hotel room I was stress eating instant noodles late at night (I guess Boyang likes to celebrate this way) while I wrapped up the Winnie-the-Pooh I got to toss on the ice, the gift I got for Yuzu, and wrote the card to go with it. After the SP I had stuck the little Yuzu buttons I had made on the Winnie-the-Pooh and held it as I went to sleep the next two nights, that thing really brought me some comfort over a couple of days. Each morning housekeeping would make our beds and place our Pooh bears neatly on the bed, I have to wonder what they thought of all the Poohs and toys in our hotel room!

That same night I was stress eating the noodles I remembered that I had brought a bag of Bourbon Lumonde snacks (from the “mou chotto” meme) that I happened to find at a local Daiso shop before I left home. Now, I’m not superstitious, but I had meant to eat one of the snacks before the SP for good luck - as if I was eating and making the bit that was lacking disappear. Sadly, I totally forget the bag in my hotel room the day of the SP because we left early to get a good seat to watch morning practice that day. Well, I remembered them that night and immediately dug them up and made my friend and I eat one each that night to eat away all doubts! I took the rest of the bag with me the day of the free and told my friends that we would eat ALL of the bag before Yuzu skated his free skate (and we did during the last ice resurfacing).

As the final group was preparing to get on the ice I grabbed my Hope and Legacy banner in preparation and my wrapped up Pooh bear to hold for support. As they did the skater intros Yuzu kept moving around to keep his body warm, he looked extremely focused. He started the warm-up with a nice 3Lz but then fell on a 3A which I’m sure made the audience stand on edge since he rarely fails to land his axels. Once warm-up ended I looked up at the seconds on the jumbotron to make sure he wasn’t in danger of having a time violation again, but he promptly took his place this time. Then the program began.

What happened over the next 4 minutes and 30 seconds was nothing short of magic. As he landed his 4Lo the cheers and applause erupted but were quickly silenced until he landed the following quad salchow to which we all erupted again. After each jump I would applaud as hard as I could, then quickly clutch the Pooh bear again. Once the triple flip was completed and we moved into the second half of the program it seemed like everyone in the arena held their breath as we waited for the 4S3T combo. When he landed the salchow and then the toe beautifully everyone cheered the loudest, as if we all knew this combo had plagued him in the free the entire season. The relief was short-lived as he set up for the 4T and the tension increased again, and then he proceeded to land the most beautiful 4T he’s done in the second half yet! I was stunned by how magnificent it was, but was still waiting for the axels. With each element being completed I felt the elation inside build and build, I could hardly believe what I was witnessing and I felt delirious.

As Yuzu exited his spin to begin his choreographic sequence everyone started applauding and cheering and that intensified with his hydroblade and ina bauer up until the set up for the 3Lz where it went nearly silent. Once he landed the final lutz the audience went absolutely crazy! The applause and the cheers continued until the end of the program as nearly everyone got on their feet. I remember clapping like crazy and shouting non-stop, I was so excited I was waving my banner around and jumping up and down for who-knows how long after it was over. The girl beside me was so moved she was crying, after the program we looked at each other and gave each other a hug even though we had never spoken a word to each other the entire competition. The excitement was palpable, and the audience in Helsinki was so supportive for all skaters, it really felt as if this program and this skate unified the audience and we reacted as a collective as he showed us something unbelievable. It felt as if my entire body was charged, I knew that no one would be topping that free skate that night and just hoped that it would be enough to take the title.

My seat was just above the Kiss and Cry, as Yuzu stepped off the ice he gave a hug to Brian and to Tracy. Can I just say I loved seeing Tracy rink side during the entire competition? I know she’s usually busy doing commentary but I hope next season she finds the opportunity to be at the rink side and Kiss and Cry with her students, she does just as much as Brian does and I think the skaters also appreciate her presence. The scores were ready pretty quickly, and I knew we were in for a new world record, as the announcer enthusiastically proclaimed, “223.20 points,” the crowd exploded again. Also, looking at the protocols I think if Yuzu had skated later in the last group we would’ve seen higher GOE for his jumps. They were immaculate. I loved the reaction of all three in the Kiss and Cry - Brian smiling proudly, Yuzu looking up with his eyes wide then closed as he basked in joy in near tears, and Tracy who was calm and collected until the score registered with her and she looked on in disbelief.

I think after Yuzu’s performance I was in an incredibly good mood, everything and everyone’s programs seemed 10x more enjoyable, even the ice dance free afterward seemed more exciting. As each skater in the final group skated I checked on the real-time scores on the ISU site to see what score they needed in order to take the lead, and Yuzu’s scores held for the remainder of the night as we were treated to some other fantastic performances in the final group. When it came time for Javi to skate and I watched his program unfold I knew that Yuzu had succeeded and I couldn’t believe he was able to move from 5th to 1st in such a stunning fashion. I clapped so much and so hard I think I bruised my left hand since it hurt the next day.

As Javi’s scores were read and I noticed the final ranking of the podium I yelped for joy (sorry, Javi, I couldn’t help my honest reaction). Yuzu, Shoma, and Boyang had been the dream podium I told my friends I wanted at the very start of the season and I was in partial disbelief that it had actually happened. I was recording the medal ceremony, and as the audience stood for the Japanese national anthem the arena went silent. As the song began to play I could quietly hear the audience in the distance singing the lyrics together (I wonder if it’s audible in my fancam video?) and I just lost it.

I’m not Japanese, but the moment was so sweet, so unifying, and so gratifying that I had a brief flashback to the medal ceremony in Boston the year before which was the first competition I had ever attended. I had decided to go to Boston instead of Barcelona that season because it was within the US and I felt sure I’d be going to witness Yuzu reclaim his world title. The memory of the sad feeling and watching Yuzu go through the medal ceremony to receive the silver medal in Boston was so excruciating that I’ve never watched it again. Thinking back on that moment, with the voice of the audience singing the national anthem in my ear, and seeing Yuzu standing atop the podium the tears just started welling up in my eyes and I began to cry. Before my trip to Helsinki started I had told friends I had met in Boston that I hope no matter what I don't end up crying during the gala again (Yuzu's Requiem in Boston hit me hard). I don't think I've ever cried from happiness before, but these were probably the best kind of happy tears. I wasn't expecting to be moved so much but it came from a place of joy. It felt like we, and he, had been waiting so long for this moment to come. The journey to his second world title had seemed so long and full of obstacles. From Cup of China all the way to Worlds in Helsinki, the weight of it seemed to sink in and I couldn’t help crying. As I was recording with the tears in my eyes and my running nose, a kind Hartwall staffer came up to me and handed me a tissue in an act of kindness that warmed my heart (you may or may not hear my crying in the fancam…).

While I witnessed Yuzu’s perfect Ballade SP in Boston which nearly set a new world record, that experience and this felt very different. Perhaps it was the fact that we knew he had to fight in the free skate and be perfect to have a hope at winning the title that added to the drama and excitement of it. It also felt like there was a larger Japanese crowd in Helsinki than in Boston (Boston felt like more Americans and Canadians) and the audience in general was super supportive for all skaters. I was elated in Boston after the SP, and I had a similar elation here for the FS but it felt magnified ten times over. The entire free skate it felt as if the audience was one in supporting him - it’s a feeling I won’t forget and will treasure for a long time. After the medal ceremony a group of fans from the FB group met up in the concourse, there were hugs and high fives all around and no one could contain their excitement. It felt like we had witnessed the impossible! I’m so glad I decided to come to Worlds in Helsinki, I hadn’t decided on it until Skate Canada came around but I’m so glad I did as I would’ve missed out on a spectacular event and witnessing Yuzu set a new world record. Another fun tidbit - after the medal ceremony Yuzu took a photo with Grishlan (I don't think I'm spelling his name right) and then handed him his bouquet.

Anyway, I've rambled on for much longer than I anticipated. I'll try to do write-ups of the other events and the rest of the men in the coming days. To all the fans I met in Helsinki, and to Yuzu and all the other skaters, thank you for making this an unforgettable experience.

My 1st skating competition, Four Continents Championships 2017, Gangneung Ice Arena, South Korea (a personal account of my experience) (only for fans of Yuzuru Hanyu)

Valentine’s Day 2014, I who did not care or know about figure skating read a mention of a certain Hanyu Yuzuru by chance. Exactly 3 years later, I was at my first figure skating competition in a foreign country to watch him skate and to cheer for him. Life is like a box of Ghana chocolates. :)

14 Feb 2017, Day 1 practice. I arrived at the ice arena brimming with excitement. Everyone was directed to sit in the section behind the judges’ tables and it was free seating. Pair skaters were at the end of their practice when I entered (men’s practice was next) and the front middle seats were already all occupied. I quickly sat in the 2nd row further to the right side. Wow I was finally in a real ice arena!!! And site of the next Olympics!!! I took my iPhone out to snap some photos. I could see that all the people there were Yuzu-fans. There were people wearing Pooh-ears and all the cameras came out to get ready when it was time for Yuzu’s group to practise. He came in from the opposite side of the rink with Pooh, Brian and Kikuchi-san, and the air was suddenly electrified. Practice started and he skated around. I have seen him skate live at ice shows before but I was not sitting this close. Here I was in the 2nd row! When he skated past, my brain could not comprehend the fact that he was really there, so near me. While my brain malfunctioned a bit, my eyes just followed him wherever he went. I remember thinking, “Oh his hair is so long!” Yes, I think this hair length is the longest one I have ever seen and I love it. I snapped some photos, took some videos, but most of all, I just watched. How fast and smooth and light and graceful he is! What a gorgeous face he has, same as in the photos but more beautiful (sorry if I don’t make sense!). His hair was so long and floppy. Clad in his usual black training attire, he looked so lean and strong, and when he jumped near me, I almost died.... his jumps were so big and beautiful. My eyes just marvelled at the sight of this demi-god before me and I had absolutely no idea what was happening in the mortal world.....

After the practice session for his group ended, I was still sitting there for a long time because I was so happy that I couldn’t move.

15 Feb, Day 2 practice. This time, we were told by the arena staff to sit in the section opposite the judges’ tables. And I had a seat in the 1st row! I was so excited when he came in, I think I forgot to breathe.

After each jump, he came back to this side to talk to Brian. His face was so expressive and he laughed easily. Sitting so near watching him talk and laugh with Brian, and then watching him glide gracefully across the ice, making beautiful jumps effortlessly, it was all so unreal. I just watched in awe and rapture, not wanting to miss a single thing, not wanting to forget a single image, not wanting the session to end....

And I realised I really needed 3 pairs of arms and hands -- one pair to hold up my Yuzu-sign, one pair to hold my camera and one pair to clap. And 2 pairs of eyes -- one pair to fully appreciate every moment and one pair for taking photos and videos. Sigh, what a pity I only have one pair of each.

16 Feb, nothing for men skaters at the main rink, so it was a day to rest and recharge and get ready to cheer for Yuzu’s short programme the next day. I ate ‘soondubu’ that Yuzu said he wanted to try. It was delicious! (Gangneung is famous for this tofu/beancurd dish.)

17 Feb, competition day! I was at the arena the whole day because men’s practice was in the morning, followed by ice dance competition in the afternoon, and then men’s short programme competition in the evening. The place looked very different from the 1st two days. There were food stalls and sitting areas set up; there was a flower counter for fans to buy bouquets to throw onto the ice for their favourite skaters; and a counter where we could pick up flags to support the skaters. (I was pleasantly surprised to find that the flags were free-of-charge.) I picked up a huge flag of the rising sun, the Japanese flag, of course. And I bought the competition book (glad I remembered because it was sold out on later days).

The flowers cost between 15 000 to 30 000 won. There were long queues there when men’s competition time drew near. Many people had Pooh bear in their arms or bags. ^^

Short programme. I realised it’s more nerve-wracking at home watching on live stream and waiting for Yuzu’s turn. When I was actually there waiting, I was rather calm. I saw how good his practices were and that helped me not to freak out. I tried to appreciate and enjoy the other skaters’ performances as I normally do not watch any skater other than Yuzu. Soon, it was time for ‘Let’s Go Crazy’..... it’s crazy but I can’t remember much of it now; I think I was too stunned. When it ended, I stood up and clapped really really hard, and then I grabbed my present and hurried down the stairs to throw it onto the ice. It was really funny watching the shower of gifts and some were bouncing off people around the rink below, haha! Not intentional for sure; it was hard to throw so far. (Mine just made it nicely into the rink.) (See HERE for my post about the flower girls and the big pile of presents they collected.)

Yuzu did not do as well as he wanted to for his SP. I felt sad for him but there was still the FP; I was sure he would fight back. And no matter what happens, I will be cheering for him.

18 Feb, I had fun with some wonderful Yuzu-fans from Taiwan and ate ‘soondubu’ again! See my post here.

19 Feb, free skate day! It was another full day at the rink -- men’s practice in the morning, competition in the afternoon and gala exhibition in the evening. What a tiring day for the men!

This would be my last day at the ice arena. I walked around slowly to take more photos and savour all the sights. How I wish I can be here again to support Yuzu in the Olympics next year!

Soon it was time for ‘Hope & Legacy’. I really LOVE this programme and music, and I was so excited that finally, I was going to watch Yuzu perform this in front of my very eyes. I prayed for Yuzu with my heart pounding hard and then Hope & Legacy started.......

.......it was the most beautiful performance I have ever seen. When it ended, I had tears in my eyes and I screamed and cheered and clapped so hard that my hands were sore. Later when I read the news, I was even more amazed that he was thinking and making emergency changes to his jumps while performing.... how incredible!!! How did he perform so beautifully while making all those plans in his head??? (please excuse my unskilled eyes and non-technical brain.... I was completely mesmerised by the beauty of his performance. That alone was enough to overwhelm me.)

Of course, there was a big shower of Pooh bears and flowers, and a lot fell outside the ice, so it was not just the flower girls doing the pick-up, the staff standing around the rink side helped to quickly gather those that fell along the sides and put them into huge bags straightaway! It was quite funny to watch!

I was so happy to see that Yuzu was very happy with his free programme. When the score of 206.67 for FP appeared, with a total 303.71, there was a huge roar of delight and everyone was clapping and cheering..... it was a really great moment! [no-commentary video] [good fancam]

The victory ceremony was immediately after the free skating event. I cheered and clapped loudly for Yuzu. He was 1st in FP and 2nd overall. Of course, I wanted him to get the gold medal, but whatever it is, he will always have my support. And that incredibly beautiful and awesome Hope & Legacy will be remembered forever. (This season’s highest scores for men’s SP and FP are both his, SP score of 106.53 at GPF and FP score of 206.67 at 4CC. One more competition to go for this season, World Championships at the end of March.)

After the victory ceremony, the arena staff directed everyone to go out of the arena as they had to prepare for the gala exhibition which was going to start in about 2 hours. I met up with 2 more fans from YHIFG, Betsy from the Philippines and Thiri from Myanmar. When I introduced myself, the two of them screamed and jumped about excitedly! haha.... they are really fun people and we talked non-stop about Yuzu. Just outside the arena, we saw a group of fans gathering with their Yuzu-banners to take photos. We joined in and I snapped a pic. I love their banners!

Then the 3 of us walked to the huge tentage area nearby to have dinner. There were stalls with Korean food, free sampling of traditional food items and Korean cultural activities. It was very interesting!

I happened to sit next to a Japanese Yuzu-fan while I ate some food. We chatted in Japanese and she gave me a matcha KitKat. Everyone is so nice! (My hotel was also filled with lovely Japanese fans who were all there to support Yuzu.) On the way back to the ice arena, there was a traditional Korean dance/procession going on but there was no time to stop and watch. Need to get ready to watch the gala!

Gala exhibition:

I took a programme sheet before entering the venue; Yuzu was performing in the 2nd half. There was no programme name listed but of course I knew I would be watching ‘Notte Stellata- The Swan’. I was already so in love with Yuzu’s performance of this programme, watching it countless times on my laptop. So I was looking forward to it with great anticipation.

Just before his turn, he appeared at the rink side near where I was sitting and did some warm-up stretches so gracefully. Then he stepped out onto the ice and the spotlight shone on him. Wow.... his costume sparkled and he was dazzling like a handsome swan prince...... Then the music started.....

Notte Stellata was simply magical.... spellbinding..... I was in a beautiful, enchanted dream that I did not want to wake up from.....

The 4 photos above are taken by 邱小貞‎ and Sedecca Sun. Coincidentally, I was sitting near them in the gala. Yuzu was skating near us during that movement in the last photo and I could see his face very clearly; he looked so pensive and so beautiful.... I will never forget those breathtaking moments.

He came out again during the finale. It was really nice to see him enjoying himself. Many of the skaters gave him a hug, like Chock and Bates and Sui and Han. Many of the Korean flower girls and young girl skaters wanted to be near him or hold his hand or shake hands with him... [fancam 1] [fancam 2]. One group of them followed him when they skated around the rink to wave to the fans. It was very obvious that he is Mr Popularity. :)

There was no quad battle this time. It was a very full and long day for the men skaters. I was glad they didn’t have it. After the customary group photo taken by Alex Shibutani, the finale came to an end. I felt sad but also happy that my trip was filled with so many great moments and memories.

It was a beautiful sight when I looked back at Gangneung Ice Arena, lit up against the dark night. And I felt very thankful, to Yuzu and to everyone that I met on this trip. God bless Yuzu and all his loved ones, and all those who love him with simple and sincere hearts.

What does it mean when a guy replied my text fast, but basically just answered my questions? So here’s the full story. I started to be friend with my crush (let’s call him A) after we need to do a group project together. He is nice and all, but I’m not that close with him as I am with his friend (let’s call him B) who is also in the same group as us. Before, there was a discussion and we two arrived early, so he asked me where my room is (since we are all living in campus) and it ended after i answered that. Idk but the atmosphere between us somehow got awkward, and other group members came after that. Few weeks later, i asked him to teach me and my friend some topic i didn’t understand (he has taken the subject last semester) and B and he agreed. In the class, I was planning to sit next to him but he went to sit next to my friend and offered his seat to B. I was hurt tbh, it felt like he actually likes my friend. The next few weeks, he and his friend (not B) were walking behind me and my friend (the same friend as before) and my shoelace was untied. He was being nice, telling me that but I already knew that and being so tired of class that start from 8.30am until 5pm that day, i answered him in the most uninterested way (excuse me). Then we kept bumping into each other quite frequently, considering before I only saw him in the one and only class i have with him. Last week, I had a 8.30am class and so did he (I know this because you can check someone schedule on the e-learning site and please excuse me for being such a stalker) but my class was on level 4 and his was on level 3. And that particular day, I saw him walking on my level near my class (which I’m sure he wasn’t submitting any assignment because he just walked past by the lecturers’ room) and he talked to me - well, not really, he just asked me if we had business class or not on that day (which I’m very very very sure he knew this as our lecturer mentioned this more than four times already). I had my earphones plugged in at that time so I didn’t hear the question and my friend answered it for him. Idk either he wanted to talk to me or actually talk to my friend but maybe he really wasn’t sure about the class. So today I texted him, asking about his faculty (basically in my university, most of ict students are from IT faculty and just a bit from computer science faculty, by the end of the 2nd sem of your 1st year, you can choose either to change to CS faculty or stay in IT faculty and both A and B are 2nd year student) I asked him about this, and he replied fast, I was surprised actually, but it just basically him answering my questions. I asked him two questions then I ended the text. It was awkward with me asking all the questions. My friend asked me to text him again asking more questions and then change the subject, but I’m very clueless about what should I text him. I’m afraid he’ll find me as nuisance. I’m sorry for this long rant but this is literally my first time trying to initiate things with a guy so I really don’t know what should i do. Never thought it would be this hard.

Jennie: You are overthinking all of this. You don’t need to feel bad about that - it’s pretty common when you have a crush to overanalyse every little thing. But what you’ve described is a collection of mundane interactions between acquaintances. It sounds like he likes you as a person, but there’s no evidence to suggest that he has feelings for you, or that he doesn’t have feelings for you.

You just don’t know each other very well, and if you want to find out if anything could happen between you, the best thing you can do is make an effort to get to know him better. Keep talking to him, and ask him some questions that aren’t related to classes. It can be as simple as saying something like “thanks for the info, how’s your day going?”.
