storytime i suppose. i'm just thinking about it.

i always find it funny that as a kid i always seem to Hit It Off with a Specific subset of Guys. Usually creeps and weirdos, usually they're very fun. Guys that would make any threat assessment go nuts. I'm going to talk about one of those guys. This is the tale of Jeff.

Jeff was a quiet kid. I met him in 8th grade because we were assigned to a coding program. Granted, the amount of coding we did was Minimal, but i became the informatic's teacher favorite little pet, and she often called me over just so i could could kill some time at her air conditioned room. Enters Jeff. Jeff was friends with this weird autistic guy from special ed. He was in 9th grade and he was 21. He was a weirdo (derogatory). We quickly became fast friends because the Coding Program thing was very small. We began to spend a lot of time together.

Nothing happened here, actually. It's just how we met.

In 9th grade we were put in the same classroom. We sat right at the front, with me behind Jeff. He was my best friend!!!

The thing with Jeff was that he had a very particular set of interests. He loved videogames, shooters, RPGs, sandbox games, you name it, he played it. He was a big fan of creepypasta (jeff the killer. hah). He used to love rock music, classical rock, but glam specifically. He was very crafty, too! He loved to make little keepsakes of his favorite movies and games, as well as cosplaying. The weirdest thing, though is that he was extremely obsessed with the columbine massacre. He claimed he collected videos of school shootings! i do not doubt him, by the way, theyre weirdly easy to find if you know where to look and i have seen quite a few myself. But columbine? Jeff was just obsessed with it and the two guys. he found the story interesting and he just vibed with it? yknow the pumped up kicks song? he was always singing it. i know it by heart, and it's because of him.

anyways. i think that obsession with school violence was kind of funny? i never thought he would do anything, yknow? he was super chill. he had plenty of friends, was never bullied at least on the years i was with him. and sure, he was like Kid Rambo and his favorite pasttime was running through the woods killing birds and throwing rocks at cats when he wasn't being crafty, but he was CHILL. Jeff was a cool guy. he videochatted with me once from the top of a tree. he also had a big fat crush on me. i think it was because i was the only girl that was close to him that wasnt like. his cousin or something. but anyways, he tells me he likes me. i say i dont like him back that way, but in reality its because i was Webdating at the time. but like, its chill. Jeff and i kept being friends. it was alright. we more or less kept in contact for a little while before it faded away as it does. one of his friends asked me to reconsider like a year later but it was so sudden i was like ??????? boy no, leabe me a lone.

we kept on talking sometimes though!! a couple years later he mentions something like SUPER off hand about some incident at his school where police got involved. nobody got harmed, but it seems like they found a bomb or something. im not quite sure, he never got into details and i wasnt there to know. but he very much left the i did it implied right there. sometimes i still think about it. im still SO curious over what the FUCK happened. like boy i do not doubt your abilities. you WERE saving up to get a gun last time we talked like 5 years ago (he was 15) but we really havent talked that much since.

ANYWAYS last i heard of him he got engaged. the girl looks weirdly like me. curly brown hair. soft face. idk, its kinda funny

Blyke and John: Parallel Characters

I’ve written multiple entries about this,

But I’m back to make a comprehensive analysis about the glaring similarities between these two. I’ll try not to repeat myself here.

‼️SPOILER WARNING for the whole series‼️ but this mostly focuses on the story before John’s suspension.

Firstly, this scene:

ch. 121

This conversation takes place near the beginning of the Joker arc. It’s after John targets Zeke, after he targets Juni, and the day before he goes after Seraphina’s kidnappers. The timing is important.

��If someone hit your best friend, would you let it slide?”

That question is supposed to remind us what John does to people who hurt Seraphina: hunting them down and sending them to the hospital. Blyke shooting a destructive beam really close to John was an example of a trait they share: they both blow up violently when people mistreat their friends.

John’s downward spiral carries strong themes of hypocrisy. He’s angry at the world, he’s angry at himself, and as a coping mechanism, he chooses to believe that everyone else is as bad as he is. That means that most of the traits he hates others for are the same things he hates about himself. In this scene, Blyke is unintentionally calling out this hypocrisy: “What I did is no different from what you do”.

But Blyke’s just trying to connect with John here, he has no idea what John’s been doing. And John, of course, doesn’t give a shit about what Blyke has to say. This line was here for the audience to notice.

They’re both so similar, but their similarity immediately causes tension between them because, well, John was on the wrong end of Blyke’s protectiveness.

I really love the way this was written— there are so many flashbacks to this scene, but they remember it differently. John remembers the part that hurt him— he’d describe it as “the time that jackass shot a beam at me”. Blyke remembers the part that hurt him, or rather, hurt Remi: “the time that jackass hit Remi for no reason”.

Blyke and John are both hotheaded characters with strong ideals. They’re similar enough that Seraphina points it out:

As Blyke grows as a character, he becomes more like John: sticking up for low tiers and speaking out against the injustice in the world. But while Blyke is doing that more, John is going in the opposite direction, until they are fully opposed to each other.

Speaking of Blyke’s character arc, it took me a few rereads to actually understand what part of him changed. His kindness, selflessness, bravery— all of those things were there from the start. Blyke’s character arc was about becoming more aware of his surroundings, and how his carelessness can harm others. Blyke was never malicious, but after X-Rei and integrating more with the school, he becomes aware of people suffering around him and how he unintentionally contributes to it. He becomes less reckless, privy to the flaws in the system he grew up not questioning, and uses his power more responsibly. He even comes up with a more controlled way to wield his ability. The part of Blyke that changes is his maturity.

Part of John’s character arc is also about being careful. It’s not as close of a parallel as other things are, but one of the things that John works on during his redemption arc is holding back. Both of them learn self-control throughout the series, and for John, that means acting early before his emotions spiral out of hand.

Adding onto my first point about the two of them wanting to protect their friends— the fact that they can’t do that makes them both angry and desperate. For most of the story, the “block” that prevents John from protecting Seraphina is in his head. It’s his own trauma that holds him back. The block that prevents Blyke from protecting his friends is, guess what? Also John’s trauma! Parallels abound.

Another thing I noticed in Episode 80 is this:

Notice that when Seraphina says “I’d take that over strength any day,” John is looking at the camera. He’s avoiding Sera’s gaze. Seraphina is saying she prefers honesty over strength. John is very strong, and very dishonest, but Seraphina thinks the opposite because John is so dishonest. John appears to be reflecting on this disconnect.

In relation to this analysis, Seraphina is actually pointing out a major difference between Blyke and John. Beyond that, she’s praising Blyke’s traits, (less strong but very open) above John’s traits, (strong as fuck but a liar with his pants on fire). Furthermore, John really cares what Seraphina thinks of him. Knowing that she would think less of him is the main reason why he spent so much time and effort preventing her from catching his lies.

This leads into my main point here: Blyke is the “goody-two-shoes” version of John. Or, more accurately, the person that John wants to be. Blyke has a clean track record and doesn’t really get into trouble. He is respected and left alone by the school without being hated and feared, he de-escalates conflicts without taking things too far, he doesn’t lose control, he’s someone Seraphina thinks highly of, hell, even his grades are better! Blyke represents everything that John wants to be, and the person that he could have been if he’d gone down a different path.

But, crucially, John is also what Blyke wants to be. Well, not wholly, but his ability? His strength? It’s one of the things John hates about himself, but Blyke wants that strength so desperately that he risks his life for it over and over again.

They’re both desperate to be like each other, even when they hate each other the most. Neither of them have any idea how alike they already are.

I don’t know what Season 3 holds in store for us, but I do hope that John realizes that Blyke embodies who he wants to be, because mutual jealousy would be a very interesting dynamic to explore in my opinion. I also hope that it ends up being something they can bond over, by helping each other accomplish their personal goals. (Blyke being another helper in John’s character arc, and John helping Blyke train.)

A side note: John beat up Blyke four separate times. That’s more than any other character, which is interesting because John’s main rival is supposed to be Arlo. For reference, John has beaten Arlo twice, three times if you count the time when Seraphina intervened, and he only beat him unconscious once. But John beat Blyke to the point of passing out all four times, the worst of which being a shot clean through his chest. (shoulder? Unclear. S1 finale).

It’s odd, isn’t it? Out of everyone, Blyke is the one who John physically hurt the most. John’s only grudge against him is an old memory from episode 33, of an event that didn’t actually harm him. John’s grudge against Arlo is much more serious and again— that’s his main rival. So why is it that he’s so much more violent towards Blyke?

The problem here is that I’ve been thinking about these fights as “John picking on Blyke”. And that’s… kind of true? But while Blyke didn’t start any of these fights, they were all consensual in a way. He didn’t seek to fight John, nor was he ever happy about fighting John, but he was always a willing participant.

(138, 153, 206, & 211)

In three out of these four fights, John didn’t even expect to be fighting Blyke going into it. This is significant because while Arlo is John’s main rival, John absolutely fills that role for Blyke. Blyke’s own agency is what leads to most of these events. The reason, narratively speaking, why they fight so much is not for John’s character, but for Blyke.

For John, his reason for fighting Blyke so much is not narrative but moreso symbolic. John is angry at everyone and everything, but ultimately the person he hates the most is himself. It’s only fitting that the character most like him would bear the brunt of his wrath.

As John is having his positive character arc (suspension and post-suspension), he is becoming more like Blyke, and the two of them reach a point where they’re even more similar than they were at the start of the series.

In the Rowden amusement park, John does start to realize how similar they are:

Furthermore, in the S2 finale, Blyke is shown being taken to Keon. There is an implication that by Season 3, Blyke and John will share Keon-related trauma as well. Despite my pessimistic predictions, I do hope that this is a similarity that can bring them together rather than tear them apart.

kenma was gonna be home in about 20 minutes, you ponder. your hands are at work, one ruffling the newly-blond hair on your head and the other skilfully drying it. the bathroom is a little messy; bleach bottles scattered, an uncountable amount of little towels draped over the sink and tub, you’re sure that if your boyfriend walked in on you now he’d pass some sarcastic remark about how it looked like a tornado passed through your shared apartment. you huff a laugh at the thought, biting back a smile as the blow drier turns off with a ‘click’ and you step back to admire your work.

it’s pretty; most of all, it reminds you of him. you tussle it around a little, poking at it and making the stupidest poses you can in the mirror- eventually getting so far into it that your eyes are closed and you’re just having the time of your life. that is, until kenma got home way too early.

“imagine out doing the do-er.” you mumble with a haughty smile.

“ yes, imagine. that’s the closest you’ll get,” a voice that you found too familiar pitched up from the door frame. your eyes practically fling open, you’re sure that the lids are now damaged. your boyfriend’s voice is smug, and if you look closely at his expression it’s fond. his slender form is leaned up against the sturdy frame, dressed sharply for a meeting(something you never witnessed often) and he looked divine. you’re against the bathroom sink, and kenma is now smiling at you unapologetically- noticing your hair. he steps forward, nimble fingers coming out to pat some of it on your scalp.

“you look.. really pretty.” he says quietly, although not looking you in the eye. your heart does backflips in the hollow of your chest as his hand moves down to cup your jaw, as he places a chaste kiss to the crown of your head. “.. you look kinda like me, too.” he laughs, pulling back a little. as your arms wind around his waist, he nearly slumps against you. kenma places his head atop yours; taking in a small breath and letting out yet another small laugh, “you little fucking thief,” he muses,” you used my shampoo!” the man accuses you, although his tone is a playful whisper. you only laugh, placing a kiss to his lips that make him feel as if he were going to melt into the mess of towels and bottles on the floor of your lavish apartment. he hums thoughtfully, “hm, i’ll allow it for now.” the faux- blond says, running a hand through his hair. “only if you help me touch up my hair now too, though,” he says with a grin.

So the One Piece brand has been doing radio broadcasts called Strawhat Space (/Mugiwara Space) where they bring in voice actors to chitchat about the series etc, most of the episodes they've featured just the main cast but they've started bringing in VAs for other characters too (one episode was Mayumi Tanaka/Luffy and Tomokazu Seki/Lucci, another was the OG three admirals etc) This week's broadcast featured Ryuuzaburo Ootomo and Yuriko Yamaguchi as Crocodile and Miss All Sunday respectively

The promotional images for Strawhat Space have been Extremely Adorable and I know I'm a simp but god, this one is so cute

Now unfortunately, while my Japanese listening comprehension is good enough to follow along your average kids anime where the VAs speak clearly and take their turns, yeah, a radio show where the VAs stumble on their words a little and speak over each other is too hard for me to keep up with (not to mention my vocab just not being suited for this kinda thing)

But, if I didn't completely misunderstand Yuriko at one point, she seemed to mention that she hoped Crocodile would remain in the position of an ally in the story (after having teamed up with Luffy during Impel Down), and like. Yuriko I love you, you so are so right

This man really is only surviving through a fuck around and find out fight style huh. Also I think it's a bit telling most of the ones he DOES pick up from other people are almost always more offensive, aggressive fighting moves because Seven's naturally pretty defensive and doesn't have much issue dodging or avoiding things (or just fucking taking it like a champ) most often, but really often turns to others around him for how to attack people and that's how he's most often won fights or escaped the situation, and most of these aren't exact copies of them but he's able to adapt and adjust them for the situations he's in: holding down the Prince of Stan not to immobilize him but to stall him long enough for Thirteen to attack unlike Dachun trying to stop Seven entirely, using the drill move from Xiao Fei not entirely to attack Meowcai but also using it with his scissors to continue rushing forward and block his attacks, adapting Thirteen's fighting style to fight one on one with Meowcai when he had seen Thirteen defeat a solid majority of the other cats like this, etc etc

I think actually something that does interest me a little: different character's qi can have different colors and take a lot of different forms, but even though purple and red are more of Seven's signature colors (I'm being fairly generous with the red there given he's got a neutral color palette, but it compliments his purple well) the qi he uses with his scissors is the exact same color as Thirteen's and she's the person he tends to pick up certain moves or dual wielding in general from. I know it's pretty much always been that color but

especially here where he's physically holding them and that same color energy is still emitting from them. I might be reaching with the color thing a little but I think it is at least safe to say though Hua was the reason Seven was able to master his qi better he picked up quite a few things from Thirteen (and Green Phoenix in the past, I'd assume)
