Coworkers?ā€¦ Something like that (MV33)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: Working in media for a Formula 1 team, you had expected to be behind the scenes, unseen and unnoticed by fans. But catching the eye of one of the drivers and the very public flirting as a result has thrust you into the spotlight Part of my summer event! Warnings: A little suggestive hehe.
It was the perfect job for you. Part of the team you love, far from the spotlight. You were good at it too. Constantly complimented by your boss in meetings on how much engagement some of the content you came up with got. Even the two drivers, who were certainly not known for enjoying media making them do stupid games for the fans, had stopped complaining as much. One driver in particular seemed to really enjoy when you would work with himā€¦
Youā€™d never been a big fan of Max Verstappen. It wasnā€™t that you disliked him, he was extremely talented of course, and not too bad to look at, but as you had always rooted for the underdog, you couldnā€™t justify ever celebrating his many many wins. But as you got to know him, as he gave you the warmest of welcomes to the team, you changed your mind.Ā
You two had been keeping your budding relationship to yourselves. Despite how much you liked each other, until you both had figured out where the relationship was going, it didnā€™t seem wise to tell anyone, especially while you were just finishing your first year with Red Bull. Despite how much you helped improve the teamā€™s social media presence, if something happened, if it came down to their world champion a few times over, or some girl in media who had only been there for a yearā€¦
Luckily, it did get more serious, very serious. After a long conversation, you both had come to the decision that you wonā€™t say anything explicitly, as Red Bull didnā€™t have rules on dating coworkers that would warrant an official notice to HR, but you wouldnā€™t hide as much.Ā
Too bad this decision was made not long before the Drive to Survive team came to film extra content for the show.
It was only supposed to be filler clips. Extra video footage to use with a voiceover to give more time to explain things. ā€˜Just pretend we arenā€™t hereā€™ they had told everyone in the office, and oh boy did you pretend.Ā
It was Maxā€™s fault, 100%. The undisclosed but very apparent relationship between you two was known to everyone at Red Bull at this point, but not the new video crew coming in. And Drive to Survive lives for the dramatics.Ā
While it wasnā€™t explicit, a few clips of hand holding (initiated by Max), a kiss on the cheek (given to you by Max), and multiple clips of Max looking at you with nothing but heart eyes, it was hard for anyone watching to ignore.Ā
Once the new season came out, fans very quickly caught onto all of the content of the two of you that DTS was trying to be sneaky about putting in. That then led to ā€˜internet sleuthsā€™ finding all of the behind the scenes content they could get of both of you, and then finding your account you had left public thinking no one would care about the random Red Bull media girl. How stupid you were.
ā€œMax, what the fuck are we supposed to do? Do I delete my account and hope people forget?ā€ You asked, stressed by the sudden spotlight.
ā€œThat would just make it worse and make them less likely to forget. We will just have toā€¦ be honest, give people enough content to keep them satisfied but not spoiled into needing more.ā€
He was right. It was almost laughable how he was the voice of reason in this situation when media presence was your job. That is how everything started.
There were no ā€˜official wag paddock walksā€™, you were too busy working to be Maxā€™s arm candy before a race. But there were a few photos here and there, your team even posted a few BTS moments of the two of you.
ā€œAll you have to do is describe the food you are eating to Checo so he can guess.ā€ You explained to Max for the fourth time, but he was still not listening as he was far too busy appreciating the view of the beautiful woman he got the privilege of calling his girlfriend. ā€œDo you understand?ā€
As Sergio nudged Max, he responded with a quick, ā€œYes got itā€
ā€œDo not say the name of what you are eating.ā€
ā€œYes, yes we know.ā€ He absentmindedly said as the two drivers put on their blindfolds.Ā
Everyone let out a breath of relief as Max went to lift the spoon to his mouth, the entire crew antsy to finish what was supposed to be a quick video before Max ruined it with his heart eyes and lack of comprehension to anything that came out of your mouth.Ā
ā€œWhat the fuck! Itā€™s ketchup!ā€ Max exclaimed as everyone groaned.
ā€œMax, you werenā€™t supposed to say that!ā€
ā€œI thought I was guessing what it was! That's why I had the blindfold, no?ā€
They were in for a long day of shooting.
Max had started a stream, hoping to make it quick so he could join you in bed. Unfortunately, when viewers saw that you were walking through the background, they wouldnā€™t give up until you joined, so neither of you had much of a choice.
Despite how obvious it was that the two of you were together, neither of you had confirmed the status of your relationship. This led to having to ignore about three quarters of the comments you both were getting on the stream.
ā€œWould you like a Red Bull?ā€ Max asked, 45 minutes into what seemed to be a never ending stream.
ā€œNo itā€™s too late, Iā€™ll go get a water-ā€
ā€œNope you stay there i'll get it.ā€ Max said, antsy for an excuse to take a moment to himself. The amount of comments about the two of you were starting to piss him off.
He returned to the room to see you answering questions and, while still off camera, he set down the glass and waved to get your attention.
ā€˜End itā€™ he mouthed, making prayer motions with his hands.
You simply shook your head, you had been having more fun talking to people than he had.
ā€˜Please, I want to go to bed with youā€™ he mouthed back, wiggling his eyebrows in hopes of conveying he wanted to do much more than simply go to bed. You couldnā€™t stop the giggle that left your mouth at that.
Seeing all the viewers confused, you simply responded, ā€œSorry, my coworker was harassing meā€ which had you giggling again as you saw Max get visibly annoyed at his new title.
ā€œOkay guys, bye.ā€ Was all Max said as he quickly returned to the view of the camera and turned off the stream. He then turned to face you, saying nothing as he dragged you to the bedroom, holding you close as he pushed you down onto the bed with him, causing more giggles to leave your mouth/
Giggles which he quickly stopped with a kiss. And then another. And then another.
The makeout session was in full swing when Max finally remembered why he was annoyed.
Quickly pulling away from you, much to your chagrin, he asked, ā€œCoworkers? Is that all we are now?ā€ He teased.
Giving him a less passionate but more loving kiss this time, you responded with, ā€œSomething like thatā€ as you both started to remove your clothes.

Formula 1, Sportswashing and Greenwashing a Genocide ... in other words, just an ordinary day in baku
Tumblr media
As the final Formula 1 Grand Prix is set to take place tomorrow in baku, azerbaijan, I find it impossible to remain silent. The world is gearing up for whatā€™s supposed to be an exciting event but behind the gleaming lights of the racetrack, thereā€™s a much darker story that demands attention: the ethnic cleansing of Artsakh and azerbaijanā€™s ongoing brutal actions against Armenians.
azerbaijanā€™s history of oppression toward the Armenian people is not a secret. The forced displacement of Armenians from their ancestral lands, the violent campaign of ethnic cleansing in Artsakh, and the inhumane imprisonment and torture of Armenian captives in baku are undeniable facts. The world has remained shockingly quiet as over 200 Armenians languish in azerbaijani prisons, subjected to treatment that violates every principle of human rights.
One of the most glaring symbols of azerbaijanā€™s hatred toward Armenians is the Genocide Theme Park in baku, a chilling place that mocks the pain and suffering of an entire people. This is not just an internal issue; itā€™s an attack on humanity. But instead of confronting azerbaijanā€™s actions, the world is endorsing them.
These atrocities are certainly not limited to the government and the officials; the indescribable hatred has extended over to the people as well - take a glimpse into the azeri society
Now, let's imagine that you were fortunate enough to watch the F1 Grand Prix live in baku. How would you feel knowing that the azerbaijani person sitting next to you might be one of the many who were selling beheaded bodies of Armenian children on Facebook? Or perhaps they took their children to the Genocide Park and photographed them pretending to choke the statues of Armenian soldiers?
azerbaijan is not only hosting the Formula 1 Grand Prix but is also set to host COP29, a global climate summit. These events are being used to greenwash and sportwash the regimeā€™s crimes.
How can we watch Formula 1 without acknowledging that the very ground this race is held on is soaked in the suffering of Armenians? How can we cheer for a spectacle when the cries of the oppressed go unheard?
This is not a political issue; itā€™s a matter of basic human decency. While the world enjoys the race, we must not forget the injustices happening in the shadows. Formula 1 should be about fairness and excellence. But in azerbaijan, itā€™s about something far more sinisterā€”using sport to hide atrocities.
So, as you watch the Grand Prix in baku, remember the Armenian lives shattered by violence, hatred and silence. Letā€™s refuse to let sports and international events become tools for erasing history and ignoring the suffering of innocent people.
BREAK THE CHAIN OF IGNORANCE: Share Information: use social media platforms like Tumblr, Instagram, X, Facebook and others to share articles, videos, and testimonies about the atrocities being committed by azerbaijan. The more people know, the harder it becomes to ignore. Engage in Dialogue: talk to friends, family, and colleagues about the situation in azerbaijan and encourage others to take action too. Support Armenian Communities: donate to/support organizations helping displaced Armenians and those impacted by the conflict in Artsakh. Even small contributions can go a long way in providing humanitarian aid. Artsakh Relocation Project All For Armenia
TAKE ACTION by adding your name to THE LIST of supporters.
Remember that this is not a political issue; itā€™s a matter of basic human decency.

If I havenā€™t tagged you in this but you want to participate, you have my permission. Go absolutely wild!
Now here are my answers below the cut! Warning: I can be a touch rambly!
1. Who or what got you into F1?
My parents introduced me to F1 in 2004 when I was around 4 or 5 years old. I vividly remember watching pretty much the whole of the 2005 season on the telly and how amazing a lot of the races were back then. šŸ˜ Since then, weā€™ve been keeping up with watching races, following the news, and visiting Silverstone for Free Practice sessions and fun events like the Classic Weekend and the Lap Of Lights whenever possible.
2. Who was the very first F1 driver you supported? Do you support them now? Have your opinions on them differed or stayed the same since then?
Tumblr media
I was drawn to Kimi RƤikkƶnen when I was young because I found him attractive. šŸ˜³ This was before I knew anything about F1. šŸ˜… Once I got into the habit of watching the sport regularly, I was happily cheering him on. That McLaren was a BEASTā€¦when it was reliable. šŸ˜¬
I didnā€™t know much about Kimiā€™s story back then. As I grew older though, I did some research on him and came to understand why fans love him so much. He kept a cool head during qualifying and race days (Heā€™s called The Iceman for a reason!) and I just love his personality in general: Quiet, composed, honest, and straightforward. And who could forget the memes that spawned during Kimiā€™s return to F1?
Even though Kimiā€™s retired from the sport (seemingly for good šŸ˜¢), I still love and support him with all my heart, whatever he gets up to. šŸ’™ā„ļø
3. Whoā€™s your current favourite F1 driver?
Tumblr media
Sebastian Vettel. Oooooh Sebastian Vettel! Where do I even start? šŸ„°
I have an insane adoration for this man, even more than Kimi admittedly. Seb is justā€¦on another level to me. šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜
Heā€™s the sweetest, most loveliest man on the planet. Heā€™s kind, generous, talented, and cultured. Heā€™s also an environmentalist, and I fully support his journey to try and make our planet a greener, tidier, happier, and healthier place. šŸŒŽšŸŒ± Iā€™m always fascinated with what he has to say; whether itā€™s something positive or negative. He has a ridiculous knowledge of everything related to F1 and our environment, and I love him even more for it.
Seb is also retired from F1 and I still miss him dearly, but that doesnā€™t stop me from loving and supporting this man. I adore him to absolute BITS! šŸ„°šŸ„°šŸ„°šŸ„°šŸ„°šŸ„°šŸ„°šŸ„°
4. Is there a driver pairing or pairings you support? What made you attracted to that pairing in the first place?
Tumblr media
Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber have an interesting dynamic to me. Iā€™ve enjoyed seeing their relationship develop and fall apart and repair themselves back together on track, from when the two were teammates at Red Bull all the way up to today. Itā€™s good that they can laugh about their mishaps and misfortunes afterwards. I donā€™t know, these two just fascinate me. šŸ’œ
Other favourite driver pairings include (in no particular order): Seb and Kimi, Seb and Charles Leclerc, Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz Jr., Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr., and FINALLY, Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant.
5. Do your parents, siblings or relatives have a favourite team and/or favourite driver(s)?
Weā€™re happy to support any team, but weā€™re primarily McLaren supporters in this household. šŸ§” As for drivers, my mum loves Jenson Button and my dad is a Nigel Mansell and Fernando Alonso supporter. My sister just recently started getting into F1 and she supports Lando Norris. We never have any complaints or disputes over our choices, which is nice. šŸ˜Š
6. Do you have any favourite races? Are there any that stand out to you the most?
Tumblr media
Thereā€™s quite a lot of races Iā€™ve enjoyed watching over the years. I donā€™t like the current races that much; Iā€™m more of a 2000ā€™s & 2010ā€™s grid enjoyer. My favourite race of all time has got to be the 2012 Brazilian GP. It was the most nail-biting race I have ever watched! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! šŸ˜± To me, nothing can top it!
However, the race that stood out to me the most ā€“ and the race that firmly cemented my enjoyment for the sport ā€“ was the 2005 Japanese Grand Prix. Kimi was a BEAST in that McLaren! From starting dead last on the grid to snatching victory on the final lap. What a show he put on! šŸ¤©šŸ‘šŸ»
7. Do you have a favourite circuit? Can be from the past or from the current calendar.
Tumblr media
Spa-Francorchamps will forever be my favourite circuit. Itā€™s home to one of the most iconic battles in history. (ā€œBUT HERE COMES SEBASTIAN VETTEL!!!!ā€) Plus the foresty backdrop is absolutely stunning. šŸ˜ One of my dream goals is to visit this iconic circuit and watch a race in person one day. šŸ™šŸ»
I also love Silverstone, Hockenheim, Monza, Sepang, Interlagos, and the NĆ¼rburgring.
8. Have you ever been to an F1 race in real life? Feel free to tell us your experience going to one if you like.
No, Iā€™ve never been to a race before. Not yet, at least. I would really love to go to one with my family and friends though. šŸ¤©šŸ™šŸ»
9. Have you ever met an F1 driver in real life?
Unfortunately, as of writing, no. Weā€™ve taken many pictures of drivers, but Iā€™ve yet to actually come face-to-face with them and take their autographs and have pictures with them. šŸ™ One day, Iā€™m hoping this will all come true. šŸ¤žšŸ»
My parents briefly talked to Esteban Ocon when he was a reserve driver. (They donā€™t know which team he was in at the time and I donā€™t know either. This was around 2015, if that helps. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø) My mum was extremely lucky to talk to and get an autograph from Jenson Buttonā€™s dad John when he was alive. I believe this was around the time before Jenson won the World Championship. Theyā€™ve yet to get Jensonā€™s autograph. Again, one day! šŸ¤žšŸ»
10. Do you have a favourite F1 car? If so, what is it?
Tumblr media
I donā€™t have many favourite cars, and Iā€™m not a car nerd like my dad is. However, the McLaren MP4/20 is a certified favourite of mine. The black and white West McLaren livery in general looked very smart. Iā€™m happy it lasted a very long time from 1997 to 2005. šŸ˜ I wish they brought those colours back in modern races, like for special occasions or something. šŸ˜
I also love the blue and yellow Mild Seven Renault livery from 2005, followed by McLarenā€™s delightfully retro Gulf livery from 2021, and Hungry Heidi herself: the Red Bull RB9 from 2013.
11. Do you have a favourite one win wonder?
Tumblr media
Robert Kubica. This man went from having his horrific accident during the 2007 Canadian GP to winning the race a year later at the same circuit. What a legend! šŸ¤
12. Do you have any favourite quotes from the F1 world? This can either be inspirational or hilarious.
Letā€™s start with my favourite hilarious quote: Kimiā€™s got hundreds of iconic moments during his time in F1. I actually use his infamous quote ā€œJust leave me alone! I know what Iā€™m doing!ā€ quite often in normal conversations, soā€¦Iā€™ll go with that! šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£
As for inspirational quotes, hmmm, thatā€™s a lot harder. The one that came to my head first was Daniel Ricciardoā€™s ā€œEnjoy the butterfliesā€ quote. I also love Sebastian Vettelā€™s ā€œYou canā€™t always be the best, but you can do your best.ā€ and his retirement speech, among others. If I had to choose oneā€¦.uhhhhh, letā€™s go with Daniel! I love them all equally though. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

The Eight Episode Formula: Binge Watching, Filler Complaints, Streaming TV Services & The Consequences
Does anyone else remember how there used to be a certain point in time where TV shows used to have at least 23 episodes per season and each episode was about a maximum of 45 minutes long? Where each episode would be released weekly and everybody would talk about it the next day? If you ask me, that was the golden age of TV in my opinion. The seasons had plot lines, character arcs and development and occasionally, a good filler episode to give us a break from the main serialized plot point.
Unfortunately, a lot of new shows are lacking these same things, and I think itā€™s not just a downgrade in writing or quality in general, but I think itā€™s got something to do with the new formula shows use by dropping 8 episodes per season, each of which being an hour long, which majorly damaged the pacing and the overall writing of the show.
Now, itā€™s worth noting that this formula could work for some series, depends on the type of show it is. But, most producers arenā€™t considering this aspect and trying to apply this formula to every series possible, which is making TV shows more boring to watch, as now, TV has become a lot less enjoyable.
While itā€™s not exactly easy for many to put their finger on why this is the case, I have a few possible suggestions as to how this formula makes shows less enjoyable to watch.
Disclaimer: This is a matter of personal opinion and is not intended to attack any specific people. This is only centered around criticism.
1. Binge Watching
The first thing that I think of when it comes to this topic is the influence of binge-watching. Now, I understand some shows are better off being binge watched within the span of a few hours. But, that can only apply to so many shows. A show like Avatar: The Last Airbender isnā€™t meant to be watched and finished in one day. Itā€™s not written for that sort of formula. But, nowadays, shows are all trying make their shows binge-able that can be finished within a day. And, itā€™s not really making shows more enjoyable.
For one, the writing itself is rushed. Even if the episodes are an hour long, it still feels like thereā€™s too much being crammed into one episode more often than not. Thereā€™s not much time to develop characters or do any world building because theyā€™re too focused on working on the main plot. Thereā€™s little to no subplots, no character arcs, no side quests, just this one plot point thatā€™s the only purpose of the entire story. Thereā€™s no underlying theme or anything, which I guess is fine, but if the story has little to nothing else going for it besides a singular plot line that they rush through, than whatā€™s the point?
Now after you binge watch a show, you donā€™t feel the same way you would when you would binge to catch up on the most recent weekly episodes you had missed of a show you liked. Now, itā€™s just over with and thatā€™s that. The story barely sticks and half the to, you probably canā€™t even remember what itā€™s about because it rushed through everything and there was too much to take in.
Because theyā€™re trying to make shows to be binge-watched rather than just watched at a normal rate, theyā€™re not working on actually making a story worth watching or caring about. Theyā€™re just making a quick cash-grab that will have its fifteen minutes of fame before everyone forgets about it.
Which is another reason why binge-watching has an effect on shows, mainly their ability to continue them. When everyone binge watches a show, everyone has seen it all and its popularity is short lived. They donā€™t try to keep the audience invested. When they made weekly episodes, it increased the interest because everyone would wait to see it, and then theyā€™d be intrigued to get to the next episode when it airs. Its fame lasts longer when everyone would be exposed to the same amount of content at the same time and theyā€™d all be on the same page to talk about it. Now, everyone talks about it for at least a month or two and then it dies down. So, even if they did make a second season, it wouldnā€™t get as much viewers because nobody was anticipating it or even cared about it.
So, it was almost as if it was all in vain.
2. Streaming Services
Arguably streaming services and the binge watching thing go hand in hand, since itā€™s streaming services who mainly advise this formula. With streaming services, thereā€™s no wait, since all of the episodes are dropped at the same time. So, naturally, they get binge-watched. But, thatā€™s mainly the thing that Im referencing in their context. When I mention streaming services, Iā€™m focusing more on their lack for care of shows.
Along with binge watching leading to the fast fashion of shows where they only trend for a few weeks but then eventually become irrelevant and everyone moves onto the next trending show, it also causes streaming services to not care for their shows anymore. A lot of times, streaming service have a habit a canceling shows that made a lot of money and earned a lot views, that would gain even more had there been a second season. But, due to their tendency to rather follow trends as a cash grab than actually continuing a pre-established enjoyable show with a wide audience, they cancel it.
And, itā€™s a shame, since they usually cancel shows that are genuinely good, with good stories and good characters and a lot of potential. Only because it doesnā€™t fit whatā€™s currently trending. These streaming services seem to care more about what they think the people want than what theyā€™d actually prefer. They donā€™t treat these forms of media as art pieces (even though they are) they treat them like products to sell.
And as I mentioned before, there are some shows that were originally intended to have a minimum of 15-20 episodes. But, due to them being produced by streaming service companies (Netflix for example), theyā€™re forced to cut it down to the 8 episodes format, which ends up causing writers and actors to make adjustments to their pre-planned work, which leads to more working, it also makes it difficult for them to write it properly since the show might be cancelled after the first season. They try to get in as much as they can as possible out of fear that they might not get a chance to continue the story and even if they did, they wonā€™t be allowed to do it the way they originally planned to. And it often ends in the writing becoming a bit sloppy.
So, in the end, thereā€™s no benefit to it. Their work has been ruined compared to what it was originally supposed to be and itā€™s most likely going to be cancelled, so the struggle would be all for nothing.
3. Filler Episodes Complaints
Okay; This one might be a little obscure, but I felt as if it was worth referencing. When shows actually were making the 20 episode seasons, there was a common complaint. At least 1/3 of those episodes were filler episodes or episodes that didnā€™t dwell on the main serialized plot point. They just served as little breakaways from the intensity of the main storyline. And, people hated that.
There was a never-ending hatred for filler episodes, as many believed they didnā€™t serve any purpose in the story and that they were useless. So, instead of just skipping filler episodes, the more reasonable thing to do, they instead advocated for shows to stop doing filler episodes as a whole. Only have episodes that center around the main plot, since filler served little to no purpose in the quality of the story.
Except, now that thereā€™s a severe lack in filler episodes, in fact, they practically donā€™t do filler episodes anymore, it becomes more apparent just how important they were. When watching shows now, itā€™s more common to find it hard to care about any of the relationships or the characters or anything. Now, a lot of shows feel hollow, incomplete. Practically unfinished.
Thereā€™s no character development, no backstory, no arcs, no world building, none of those things despite them being key factors to making a good story. And, thatā€™s when it became obvious as to why filler episodes are important.
Filler episodes give the writers time to flesh out the characters and show other sides of them that we donā€™t get to see during the main episodes. It shows us how the characters are when theyā€™re actually in a normal situation, and gives us insight to their personalities. Filler episodes could also be used to flesh out characters backstories as well and could be used to give characters more development.
They also allow for little side quests and subplots, that allow for more world building. Filler episodes could give writers a chance to explore the world outside of the main plot, and main characters. It gives us a chance to fully indulge in the world and fall in love with it. Develop an attachment to it, so vital moments within the story are much more impactful.
Filler episodes helped further develop worlds and characters as a whole. But, due to people complaining about filler episodes, since they wanted to only focus on the main plot, studios have decided to eliminate them altogether, making the shows shorter. And the effects became obvious within the writing.
Filler could contribute to the writing just as much as other episodes. They make the audience develop an attachment.
TL: DR
The 8 Episode Per Season TV Format has become a repeated pattern amongst newer shows now, and itā€™s having an effect on the quality and enjoyability of shows.

Improvise, adapt, Aquarium date Part 1/5
Hange x gn!Reader / Collage AU
~600 Words | fluff
Improvise, adapt, improvise some more because prototypes never work properly anyways. It always took a lot of testing, failing, kicking it and praying to the spirit of science itself that they didnā€™t break it. Sometimes they did, but that was a crucial step of Prototype 2.0, rinse and repeat, watch the numbers go up, but Hange always made it work in the end.
Relationships not adhering to those principles was something that made their life so much harder than it had to be. Not for a lack of trying, but even adjusting the formula had never brought in satisfying results. And right now Hange faced the fact that they couldnā€™t screw this up.
They had a date, with you of all people.
How they had managed to ask you out in a way that made you agree, even seeming flustered when they asked you, was beyond them. Hange didnā€™t believe in miracles, everything was chance based after all, but if the person they had a crush on actually liked them back, what else could it be?
A chance of 0.00285% with the parameters they used, actually. That included how well received their fish facts were by you during the last three months and other obviously quantifiable occurrences. No, it wasnā€™t something Hange had just made up last night because they were too nervous for anyone's good and Levi was running out of common sense to pack in a five word message and send it to them.
They would never.
Then Moblit had been the best wingman and roommate when dragging Hange out of bed in time for them to go through their four different sets of outfits for the occasion. The dark blue, button up shirt with brine shrimp on it made the run, along with their favourite pair of black shorts. The emotional support hair tie that you had told Hange to keep after they borrowed it when forgetting theirs for lab work. A look in the mirror, two thumbs up from Moblit. Okay, alright, they got this.
Fifteen minutes to the date. Hange had been half an hour early, killing the time memorizing the new floor plan of the Aquarium. They had to show you the nearly ten year old sea cucumber they named Sonney, occupying a tank further in the back since the renovation. Also not to forget Bean, the giant catfish.
Those two had been neighbours for years, different tanks, but both favourite subjects of Hanges freetime studies. They had told you everything about the marine animals, but youā€™ve never had the chance to meet them. Therefore the date.
While you saying something along the lines of You really have to introduce me soon and them going ā€œLike on an Aquarium date?ā€ hadnā€™t been how any of you had anticipated this conversation to go, it had worked out in the end. Remembering this, what were they even nervous about?
This was about the worst they got and you had still said yes. And you were making your way over to Hange right now from the opposite site of the street, just looking incredible. It was you after all, the person Hange could talk about their interests to for hours who still came up with questions they hadnā€™t thought of, who had so much to say of your own and Hange loved listening to.
So, Aquarium date. So many fish to point at. Sonney, Bean. The objective was clear. It would be a good day, especially when you greeted them with a smile like that.
Part 2/5 ->
--------------------------------
A/N: I saw @lovendermist `s Date Ideas with Hange on my Dash again and took it as a sign to finally start writing it. Still no idea what I'm doing, so I'll just keep improvising.

So I'm a bit frustrated with people's drivers ratings right now. I know it's personal and people can have different opinions, but I honestly look at most of them and can't help but go "Kevin will never be good enough for you, will he?!" I mean, I can admit that he has made mistakes and he definitely haven't been perfect, but the way people talk about him is just making me frustrated and angry.
I don't understand, Kevin has basically beaten all of his teammates (except Jenson) but every time the season ends, the narrative is: "his teammate wasn't very good anyway". Or like this year, where people say he should have beaten Mick with more, because he is "basically a rookie", which I find to be completely nonsense, but anyway.
Now I dread Nico coming in and Kevin beating him, so people will just say that it's because Nico is too old and past it. It seems like he can never win. Maybe he should let Nico get a few wins against him to prove that he still got it šŸ˜šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø
Sorry for the rant, i love your blog. Have a nice evening ā¤
welcome to the pain of being a k-mag stan ā¤ļø
but no, i totally get your frustration. it's the same frustration that i've dealt with at the end of almost all formula 1 seasons since 2014. for example, watching tommos video on qualifiers and him rating zhou, albon and sainz as faster qualifiers than k-mag. like are you actually kidding me? the man just got a fucking pole in a haas, beating 8 out of the 10 drivers in q3, all in much faster cars and he beat his teammate like 4 to 1 in qualifying - and he is being put in the bottom lower half of the grid in terms of qualifying šŸ¤”
unfortunately, this has kind of always been the case with kevin. when he does something extraordinary, people praise him that day and then they forget entirely. even when his stats show that he is beating his teammate in so many different ways, people completely disregard it, yes, and it's so annoying. for example, with jenson then they basically went 50/50 on qualifying, but kevin was on average 0.2 faster than jenson in qualifying for the whole season. and he was a 21-year-old rookie against a former world champion who had been in f1 for 14 years. kevin had not even driven a f2 car before being put into a f1 car. and he did that - and people still treat his 2014 season as some kind of huge disappointment. they also completely disregard that mclaren wanted to continue with kevin, but because of infighting then jenson was retained instead.
it is the same we see with mick now where people are like "oh, mick has been faster than him". like look at the graph below. when mick has beaten him, most of the time, they have not even been near top 10. and it doesn't even include sprints where kevin has scored points every single time, which means he has been in top 8 three times more from what you can see below.
Tumblr media
it's the single stat where mick has done better than him (and yet some people only focus on this irrelevant fact), but it also completely disregards the races where kevin has been forced to take another pitstop, spending close to 40 seconds in pit to get his front wing fixed, or when he has had car issues or when haas has fucked up his strategy like putting the wrong tyres on his car (oh no, not even making the wrong call, but actually putting the wrong tyres on him). also by the way, no one is talking about how the fia has basically admitted to them being wrong about the use of the meatball flag and them having admitted that to haas. imagine if the fia had ruined charles' race three times in a season. it would be the greatest scandal of the season, but no motorsports media sites give a shit because it's just k-mag and haasšŸ™„
people did not even care when he could keep up with, and even beat in some cases, a former world champion with 14 years of experience as very young rookie, so i suppose they will never care about who he beats. but of course, if nico beats him then i'm sure they will all care and make fun of him despite the fact that nico is a good and respected driver. but yeah, it's the curse of being a kevin fan. i think most people agree that he is deserving of a f1 seat, but they sort of just shrug their shoulders and then throw their love at the usual drivers.
i do not know what more kevin should do to be considered for teams higher up the grid. i know that ferrari had their eyes on him in 2018 when they had doubts about charles, and that red bull offered him a toro rosso seat, but i just wish people would respect him more. and he is still improving. whenever he has a season where he has a flaw, he usually corrects it by the next season. once, he was not considered a super good qualifier, then he fixed that. he was criticised for killing his tyres too quickly when at renault, he fixed that for next year in haas and became known for it. he was criticised for crashing too much and doing too much damage to the car, this season he is the third "cheapest" driver on the grid when it comes to the cost of car damage.
and i'm confident that if kevin had been french, alpine would have given him the seat instead of pierre šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø i think being danish is one of the things that kinda counts against him since we have no ties with motorsport and formula 1. and that shit matters as proven by the fact that everyone is already saying mick to audi just because he is german. but yeah, my best advice is just to roll your eyes at it and ignore the "experts" who spend 80% of the time only watching the top teams without doing proper research on everybody else.

Chaos: Prove It Short Story

My exhausted body wakes up slowly, pleading to go back to sleep. I keep my eyes closed, willing for sleep to come back.
ā€œYou have to be gentle with her, Rowan, weā€™ve talked about this,ā€ Maxā€™s voice echoes through the house from the living room. I can hear Keagan making the whooshing sound that he makes whenever heā€™s playing with his cars.
Ah, so thatā€™s what woke me up. The sound of my boys.
The sound of an infant wailing soon follows.
And the sound of my girl, too.
ā€œI just donā€™t know why,ā€ Rowan responds to his dad in a very matter-of-fact way.
Rowan always needs an explanation for everything, and if he forgets it and needs an explanation later, heā€™ll ask you again. And heā€™ll keep asking about the details until he fully grasps the concept- well, as good as a five year old can. Itā€™s something that he gets from Max, which means it absolutely inferirates Max. Which means that I find it hilarious.
ā€œBecause sheā€™s very small and fragile,ā€ my husbandā€™s voice gets louder as I walk down the hall, blanket wrapped around my shoulders and Tala on my heels.
ā€œOh.ā€
Max looks up as I enter the living room but Keagan keeps playing with his cars and Rowan keeps his gaze focused on Avery, worried about dropping his baby sister. Tala heads straight for her dog bed, laying down in it but keeping an eye on us.
ā€œIā€™m sorry, darling, did we wake you up?ā€ He questions.
ā€œYeah, but itā€™s fine. I missed you guys,ā€ I yawn, sitting on the couch next to him and leaning against his body.
ā€œDad, Iā€™m done,ā€ Rowan announces, slipping Averyā€™s small form from his tiny arms into Maxā€™s ones that are helping him support the baby.
ā€œSheā€™s probably hungry,ā€ I state, noticing that itā€™s been three hours since she was last fed. Max hands her to me gently, watching as she latches on to begin breastfeeding.
We turn our attention to our oldest child crawling onto the floor by his brother, grabbing a car sitting by Keaganā€™s knee.
ā€œNo, mine,ā€ Keagan cries out, despite holding a car in each hand.
ā€œYou werenā€™t playing with it,ā€ Rowan protests.
ā€œMine,ā€ Keagan squeals, stomping his foot on the ground.
Then, it happens. Rowan throws the car at Keagan- I really thought we were out of the throwing phase but I guess not- and Keagan lurches forward to bite his brother. Rowan screams as Keagan bites into his skin.
ā€œBoys, hey,ā€ Max rises from the couch, picking up Keagan by the legs and trying to pull him off of Rowan but the grip on that kid is tight.
ā€œKeagan Charles Verstappen, stop that right now,ā€ I scold sternly.
Keagan lets go at the sound of my voice but Max isnā€™t expecting it yet, stumbling back a few feet with our toddler swinging in the air.
ā€œAre you alright?ā€ Max inspects Rowanā€™s arm as I scold Keagan further, letting him know that we donā€™t bite people and we certainly donā€™t hang on for an extended period of time.
ā€œIā€™m going to wash my arm with cold water,ā€ Rowan announces while heading towards the bathroom, already knowing what to do from being the target of his brotherā€™s attacks one too many times.
ā€œHow come he listens to you and not to me?ā€ Max whines, motioning towards Keagan whoā€™s now playing with his cars again like nothing ever happened.
ā€œIā€™m going to wash my arm with cold water,ā€ Rowan repeats.
I shrug. ā€œWe spend more time together.ā€
ā€œIā€™m going to wash my arm with cold water,ā€ Rowan calls from the bathroom.
ā€œOkay,ā€ I call back. I guess weā€™re now at the repeating-until-I-get-a-response phase. ā€œDid you give the boys breakfast yet?ā€
ā€œYeah, they had waffles,ā€ Max leans forward, kissing me on the lips and stroking our daughterā€™s cheek softly. At least one of them is calm and quiet.
Thatā€™s just one out of three, though.
ā€œWith whip cream, lots of whip cream,ā€ Rowan adds as he enters the room.
ā€œYou werenā€™t supposed to tell mama about that,ā€ Max whispers to him like itā€™s still a secret.
Keagan suddenly stands up, drawing all of our attention to him.
ā€œPotty,ā€ he declares.
As soon as the word leaves his mouth, Max is rushing him out of the room. He takes his small hand, leading him to the bathroom while giving him praises for letting us know that he has to use the potty.
I didnā€™t want to begin potty training Keagan while Avery is still a newborn, but right before I gave birth he showed an interest in it so we decided to jump on that opportunity.
While Keagan showed the interest at first, he sure as hell isnā€™t now.
ā€œThanks for letting us know that you had to use the potty, bud,ā€ Max commends.
Rowan begins to play with the cars by himself while I brush a stray curl behind Averyā€™s ear.
ā€œOh, not there, Keagan. No, you have to- please, Keagan, just- no! No no no, you go in the toilet,ā€ Maxā€™s cries ring out from the bathroom.
I smirk at the sounds of my husbandā€™s pleas, only imagining what kind of mess heā€™ll have to clean up. One of the pros of being three weeks postpartum is that I can get away with not doing a lot of things.
Keagan runs out of the bathroom, giggling and diaperless.
ā€œKeagan, go get your diaper and Iā€™ll put it on for you,ā€ I tell him, not knowing how long itā€™ll take Max to clean up the mess in there. I rest Avery on my shoulder, patting her back and getting her to burp.
By the time I get her settled into her bassinet Keagan is by my side with a Paw Patrol diaper. I put the diaper on for him, settling back on the couch as he goes back to playing with the cars, not even noticing that Rowan is playing with the cars that he was playing with earlier.
My husband emerges from the bathroom with a plastic bag full of used paper towels, shaking his head at me as I laugh at him.
ā€œYouā€™re the one who wanted to potty train him,ā€ I state as he returns from bringing the bag out to the garbage can and washing his hands.
ā€œUgh, donā€™t remind me,ā€ he sits down next to me, wrapping his arm around my shoulder.
I rest my head on his shoulder. For once, itā€™s peaceful. Rowan and Keagan are playing well with each other, Avery is resting in her bassinet, and Tala hasnā€™t moved from her dog bed this whole time. Thereā€™s always chaos in our house, but it wouldnā€™t be the Verstappen household if there wasnā€™t.

three times daniel almost said "i love you" + one time he actually did itĀ  ā€” daniel ricciardo.
pairing:Ā daniel ricciardo x fem!reader.
word count: 2253 words.
request: no!
mentions of:Ā language, tiny little angst and a lot of fluff!
i wrote this with she/her pronouns but please let me know if you want me to rewrite/another version of this with they/them pronouns and i will happily do it!
authors note:Ā i had so much fun writing this, please let me know if you guys enjoy this type of writing and if you would like to do this with other drivers!! once again, english is not my first language so if there is anything wrong with grammar or anything else, please let me know so i can fix it!Ā
i was watching the fourth season of dts because of monza and i honestly was so happy that i decided to include this moment here, hope you guys enjoy as much as i did!
Tumblr media
before their relationship even started, there were times when Daniel almost felt like saying those important three words. it was hard for him to keep all of his feelings to himself, most of the time, he wanted to scream how he felt, and in his mind, he always made-up situations where he finally told her exactly how she made him feel until the day he finally did.
FIRST ONE ā€“ the first time they spent the whole night talking.
if he could pick the worst part of being a formula 1 driver, he would definitely pick the lack of having a routine. of course, daniel loved his job more than anything in his life and couldnā€™t complain about anything, he was living his dream and thatā€™s all that mattered to him. But he hated traveling, a lot. the idea of traveling every time really bothered him, especially when he would get jetlagged, something that used to happen a lot. and of course, he would get jetlagged at the beginning of the season in bahrein.
it was one of those nights and it was a hard one. he shifted in bed more than he could count, tried every sleep method he could have remembered, and even counted sheep ā€“ daniel even felt silly for trying. after finally acknowledging that he wouldnā€™t sleep any time soon that night, he decided to walk around alone in the hotel. daniel didnā€™t even bother to take his pajamas off, putting some slippers on and leaving the room with his cellphone and the hotel room keys.
just when he was about to get in the elevator, he saw a familiar someone. mclarenā€™s new intern and friend he made in the pre-season.
ā€œwhat are you doing up this late?ā€ he asked her with a confused face.
ā€œi should be asking you this, daniel. did you forget that you race tomorrow and itā€™s an important one?ā€
ā€œcouldnā€™t sleep.ā€ a little smile began to show up on his face.
ā€œyeah, me neither. i hate when this happens.ā€
ā€œme too! and this usually happens in the worst moments of the season.ā€
ā€œi know itā€™s a silly question but are you nervous for tomorrow? itā€™s your first season with Mclaren and everythingā€
ā€œa little, I guess. i wanna do well, donā€™t wanna disappoint anyone on the team.ā€
ā€œi just know that youā€™ll be amazing and iā€™ll secretly cheer for you, just donā€™t tell lando i told you this!ā€
ā€œi donā€™t know if Iā€™m able to keep this as a secret, especially when he starts to boast about your relationship!ā€
ā€œoh, you are definitely allowed to tell him this when he starts to boast.ā€
for a moment, they became silent. and it wasnā€™t the bad type, it was the good one. the silence only comes when two people understand each other. when he joined mclaren, they became friends really quick and had so many things in common, he felt a little stupid every time that he thought about how he already felt incredible in her presence, how y/n managed to make him feel good about himself when he already doubted his skills so much.
ā€œdo you wanna hang out in my room? iā€™m pretty sure the hallway isnā€™t the best place to talk.ā€
at that moment, daniel felt like saying those three words for the first time, which scared him. Ā
SECOND TIME ā€“ the first time she comforted him.
he didnā€™t have words to describe how he was feeling. it was a fucking nightmare. he was so pissed about everything in that race that he was about to explode. he was tired of feeling helpless, feeling like he would never win a championship and would probably end his career with none. it was a mix of emotions and honestly, the only thing that he wanted was to go home to his family and spend the rest of his days with them.
he didnā€™t want to be rude to anyone, so he made his way alone to his trailer, ready to clear his head and let everything behind him. suddenly, he heard someone knocking on his door. at this point, daniel was ready to tell this person to fuck off.
until he saw y/nā€™s face.
ā€œhi.ā€ she said with a tiny smile on her face.
ā€œhey.ā€
ā€œi know itā€™s a little silly to ask but how are you feeling?ā€
if anyone asked him that, he wouldā€™ve lost it. but it was her and for the first time that day, he felt like sharing his thoughts with someone.
ā€œiā€™m so fucking tired. tired of feeling like iā€™ll never be good enough for all of this. i miss my family all the time and sometimes i feel like Iā€™m never going to win a fucking championship. right now, even a podium feels like something Iā€™ll never achieve.ā€
while he was talking, she sat beside him.
ā€œdonā€™t say it like that, daniel. donā€™t be so harsh on yourself, just because you had a shitty race doesnā€™t mean itā€™s going to be a shitty season, okay? you are amazing for this; i know there are people out there that donā€™t deserve having a seat but you deserve yours.ā€
he laughed a little with her tiny speech. he hated to admit but y/n was right, just because it was a shitty race that didnā€™t mean it would be a shitty season.
ā€œhow you handle disappointment shapes what type of person you are, right?ā€
ā€œwhat if i'm just a cunt?ā€
it was her turn to laugh a little.
ā€œcan i tell you a secret?ā€
ā€œof course.ā€
ā€œyou are my favorite driver!ā€
ā€œare you sure you are not saying this just because you pity me? because i swear, if you are saying this out of pity iā€™ll get angry at you for at least five minutes!ā€
ā€œwhy would i pity you in the first place? shut up, iā€™m saying the truth, you idiot!ā€
a smile started to show up on his face.
ā€œsince when?ā€
ā€œwhen you joined formula 1, i was amazed by you, i swear.ā€
ā€œsounds pretty good when you said that.ā€
ā€œsee! thatā€™s the daniel i know, now get your ass out of here and stop hiding in here, donā€™t give them a headline. go out there and be the best version of yourself that i know you can be! now give me a big smile!ā€
ā€œoh, fuck offā€
and for the second time, daniel felt like saying those three words to y/n.
THIRD TIME ā€“ the first time she met his mother.
that weekend was special for him. danielā€™s parents were there to watch him race, something that made him extremely excited but also really nervous. he wanted to do amazing and was more motivated than anything to do great, after all, all he wished was to make his parents prouder than they already were. but that was not the only reason why he was so nervous.
his parents were about to meet the girl he was in love with, which made him more nervous than the race itself.
it was a silly thought, after all, he knew that his parents would love her and probably understand why he felt the way he did, but he just couldnā€™t help himself. daniel knew that his thoughts would eventually get in the way of his performance, no matter how hard he tried, he just couldnā€™t focus on anything else and she noticed.
ā€œwhy are you so nervous today?ā€ y/n interrupted his thoughts.
ā€œi donā€™t get nervousā€
ā€œthen why are you acting like that?ā€
ā€œlike what?ā€
ā€œlike you are about to have a heart attackā€
ā€œplease, you are overreacting!ā€ he said jokingly.
she was decided to help him lose a little.
ā€œi think i know why you are so nervous todayā€
ā€œoh yeah? whyā€™s that?ā€
ā€œyou are nervous about me meeting your parents.ā€
for a moment, danielā€™s heart stopped. it was one of those moments where he truly felt anxious about her knowing his true feelings for her.
ā€œexcuse me, what?ā€
ā€œiā€™m kidding, donā€™t be so silly. i know you are nervous about the race because you wanna do great in front of your parents! and thatā€™s fine, i know damn well that your parents will be happy with any result today, donā€™t push yourself too hard, okay?ā€
it was strange to him how she always knew what to say at the right time, it was like y/n always knew exactly how to comfort him. having a crazy career like his, it was difficult for him to connect with people on different levels, but when daniel was with her, he always felt like being at home. and that was something that he missed.
daniel opened up his arms and pulled her into a tight hug.
ā€œoh, okay.ā€
ā€œthat feels goodā€
those few seconds felt like decades to him.
ā€œdaniel, your family is here.ā€ michael said interrupting their moment.
even though he didnā€™t want to, he released her from his arms.
ā€œoh god, i missed you guys so much, itā€™s so good to finally see you again!ā€
y/n watched the scene with a big smile on her face. seeing daniel with his family made her heart race a little bit, the way he treated them, especially his mother was something she always admired from afar. being able to watch it closely made y/n appreciate him even more.
ā€œthis is y/n, she works for mclaren and we became friends!ā€
ā€œitā€™s so nice to meet you!ā€
ā€œyouā€™re the one he always talking about, itā€™s so nice to finally put a face on the name!ā€
ā€œso you talk about me to your family, huh?ā€ she whispered to him.
ā€œshut upā€
just seeing y/n with his family, made him once again, feel like saying those three words to her.
THE MOMENTĀ ā€“ when he finally confessed to her.
monza. more than anything, daniel wanted to win. even though the odds werenā€™t in his favor at the beginning of the season, that was his chance to show everyone the reason why he deserved his seat. for him, it was a big turnaround to being able to come out and do that, for the first time in a very long time, it finally felt right. it just felt right.
for the first time in a very long time, daniel was confident. confident that it was his chance to prove himself to everybody.
ā€œdaniel, 30 seconds to go.ā€
everyone at the mclaren garage was nervous, y/n in special. of course, she wanted both to achieve a good result, but daniel in special. all she wanted was for daniel to recover his confidence, to show everyone the great driver heā€™s always been and she knew that it was the time and place for that.
ā€œgood start, danielā€ he heard from his radio.
the whole crew was in frenzy. it was finally the redemption arc that mclaren needed at that point of the season. not only one was doing amazing, both of them.
ā€œhamilton and verstappen crashed and they are out of the raceā€
ā€œokay,ā€ daniel responded.
lando made a brilliant move, which led him to assume the second position. even in her wildest dreams, she couldā€™ve never imagined that McLaren would be able to have a one-two at monza. the crew members got even more excited with the race.
ā€œbehind is lando. heā€™s quickā€ daniel heard once again on his radio.
ā€œunderstoodā€
at that moment, daniel was even more hungry for his victory. the adrenaline in his body was higher than ever. all he could think of was what he was going to say to her at the end of the race, daniel was finally ready to confess those three words to her. that was going to be a good day.
ā€œdo you think itā€™s best for us if I stay like this, stay where i am?ā€ lando asked.
ā€œlando, best for us where you are. hold the position, hold the position.ā€
it was finally the last lap of the race. everyone got so excited for them, they just couldnā€™t control themselves at this point, after all, it was a mclaren one-two.
ā€œdaniel ricciardo is coming through the final corner. itā€™s mclaren and ricciardo that win the italian Grand Prix!ā€
it felt so good. after all those disappointments, he finally felt like that again. at that moment, all of his doubts about being good enough were gone, all of his fears, insecurities that used to flood his mind were gone. nothing else mattered to him, it was one of the biggest moments of danielā€™s career. all of them were able to hear how happy he was.
ā€œdeep down, i knew this was, uh, this was gonna come, so thanks for, uh, having my back. and for anyone who thought I left, I never left!ā€
for him, the feeling of crossing that line was a relief. It was also power, emotion. at that point, when he left his car, the only thing on his mind was her. All he could think about was her. Searching for that familiar face in the crowd of cheerful people, he finally found her.
ā€œiā€™m so happy for you, i have no words to describe how Iā€™m feeling right now, i have no idea how you are feeling right now!ā€
ā€œI need to tell you something and you need to listen carefully, okay?ā€ he said while cupping her face.
ā€œokay, go ahead.ā€
ā€œi love you. iā€™ve been meaning to tell you this since the first time we spend the whole night talking but i never found the right time until now.ā€
ā€œtook you long enough, huh?ā€
and finally, he kissed her for the first time.

I think at this point the writers will just keep pushing the bh ba love triangle bcs thats the only thing that give them engagement, so do you think ba could last until s7?
have they really ever pushed it as a triangle tho? i'm not really one for too many fandom conspiracy theories tbh so i'm not going to give the writers motivations that they themselves haven't been caught outright doing or admitted to but i will say roberto has teased a triangle multiple times and has yet to actually deliver.
if they actually do their version of one, i don't even think it would qualify as a real one in the end. this show doesn't do slowburns (sorry, b/as, what you're getting is not even in the actual realm of a real slow burn. it's more of a dramatic carrot used as a plot device bait which is why people roll their eyes when it's deployed seasonally) which i think people forget because of the 180 they did at the end of s5 and the long ass hiatuses since 2020.
is it possible they're going to do a triangle? sure. i can 100% see the set up for one (and i'm sure if they do one, tabitha will be as important to it as she was in the 100th...) and it's true that a triangle with 2 guys/1 girl (do not make the joke, don't make it, do not do it) is usually far more palatable for viewers than the other way around but my expectations on it are pretty low. now, the fact that they got veronica out of by way of her own choice has me believing it's slightly more possible than i would otherwise and that they're very obviously setting up a plot arc with the 3 of them makes me think if they're doing it, that it was actually maybe planned in advance and has me side-eyeing but again, we'll see.
the thing about b/archie is that they have a very specific way they treat them that almost makes me curious to see how they're going to handle it this time. they usually get what? an episode or 2 of focus before their separate plots have them barely sharing the screen and then they rarely talk. they've sexualized them almost to the point of parody since they're not writing them with any real intimacy. even when they had the chance to do it over s5 and in the event, they followed their own formula of paying the ship dust.
now, putting bughead back together onscreen with archie as an added sticking point can either be really smart (these characters never deal with anything until it blows upā€”and using bughead as a bomb with archie as a match is what should happen with them having a plot with the 3 of them) or they know enough to know that they need betty and jughead working together, at minimum, to maintain any sort of semblance of their own mystery plots moving forward. especially since they're giving archie his own brand new hiram (which has varchie plot vibes written all over it) and they've kept the tbk behind for bettyā€”and we know who is going to be helping her with that.
i'm not saying they're going to do it well but i am saying that if you took out the last couple eps of s5 and only watched the 100th after being told that these new couples are dating, it feels like an extension of s5 into 6 with the same trajectory and i've never changed my mind on the predictability of what's going to happen eventually. that being said, if it were any other show i'd say that sure, b/a could go to s7 but riverdale doesn't even write them like they like them so if they go on longer past mid-season, them being written like varchie sometimes is/was when they're in their own plots instead of bughead feels more likely than not (and by that i mean that they might be "together" but will they share scenes unless it's needed? if betty is working on a mystery and archie is working on some town related thing, i'd vote probably not).
although, i think the most interesting thing about all of it is how it's definitely always felt more like it was a thing between betty/jughead/archie vs veronica/betty/archie and maybe they'll finally let it come full circle. that there are swaths of people in this fandom as a whole doesn't see the comic aspects they've brought in while also whining about the comic canon is...hilarious to me.

ā€œhow are you so perfect?!ā€ // karl jacobs fluff alphabet
Tumblr media
a/n: the mcyt brainrot continues so i am coping with the fluffiest karl hcs my brain can summon,,,,,,, i am affection-starved send help please
summary: a look into the abcs of dating the one and only sweetheart karl jacobs!!! (fluff alphabet template by @snk-warriors)
activities - what do they like to do with their s/o? how do they spend their free time with them?
karl loves doing literally anything and everything with you; he just loves your presence and company so much!! whether itā€™s late-night target runs, playing minecraft together, or just collapsing into your arms after a long, late-night stream, being with you instantly lifts his mood.
beauty - what do they admire about their s/o? what do they think is beautiful about them?
while karl appreciates and adores everything about you, i can definitely see him being a sucker for your eyes. he loves how they sparkle in certain lights, how big and happy they are when youā€™re looking at him, how they crinkle when you laugh, and how your pretty eyelashes flutter against your cheeks when the two of you cuddle. he often finds himself getting all blushy when you guys maintain prolonged eye contact:)))) i think heā€™d also love your hands and shoulders too!!
comfort - how would they help their s/o when they feel down/have a panic attack etc.?
karl is no stranger to anxiety and is incredibly empathetic. the combination of these two things makes him the BEST person to have around when youā€™re not feeling good. if youā€™re sad, heā€™ll instinctively know just what to do to put a smile on your face again. heā€™ll crack stupid jokes or put on music and dance with youā€”anything to make you happy. if youā€™re anxious, heā€™ll talk softly to you and, if youā€™re feeling up to it, will hold you so you can safely come down from your panicking. heā€™ll definitely cradle the back of your head with his hand as he holds you close, just breathing with you.
dreams - how do they picture their future with their s/o?
karl is definitely the type to fall hard relatively quickly in a relationship. thinking about the future is sometimes scary for him, but with you in the picture, he finds it less threateningā€”beautiful, even. he doesnā€™t know exactly how he wants everything to turn out, but he does know that he wants you by his side through all of it.
equal - are they the dominant one in the relationship, or rather passive?
equality in a relationship is INCREDIBLY important to karl. he respects you so much and wants to make sure that your opinions and ideas are heard. the two of you 100% thrive on mutual communication and input.
fight - would they forgive their s/o easily? how do they fight?
i donā€™t see karl as the type to get upset easily; heā€™s pretty chill and is very forgiving since he hates conflict. i can see the odd argument popping up if heā€™s tired or stressed and accidentally snaps at you, but heā€™d be clinging to you five minutes later and begging for forgiveness (which, of course, you canā€™t resist giving himā€”he has an unfair amount of cute privilege).
gratitude - how grateful are they in general? are they aware of what their s/o is doing for them?
karl is sweetie #1 and never fails to appreciate the people in his life (or let them know). you could get him a monster from the fridge and heā€™ll literally pepper your face with kisses while chanting ā€œthank you thank you thank youā€ like you just saved his life or something. heā€™s such a cutie and never fails to show you just how much he appreciates everything you do:)))
honesty - do they have secrets they hide from their s/o? or do they share everything?
as i said before, karl thrives on communication. however, heā€™s often hesitant to tell you when heā€™s feeling down or upset. even though he knows you probably wouldnā€™t mind, he doesnā€™t want to drag you down or burden you with his problems. his tell for feeling down is getting really quiet, so if you notice this, a few gentle questions will get him to open up to you. heā€™s working on being more open because you always help him feel so much better!!
inspiration - did their s/oĀ change them somehow, or the other way around? ex: trying out new things or helping them overcome personal problems?
without a doubt, you have both changed each other for the better!! heā€™s helped you appreciate the little things and the quiet companionship that so many people take for granted. heā€™s also been a huge constant and has helped you through tough times. youā€™ve been a huge calming-yet-brilliant force for him and have taught him that good things always come in time. yā€™all are really an unstoppable pair and mean so much to the other!!
jealousy - do they get jealous easily? how do they deal with it?
karl doesnā€™t get jealous as much as he gets insecure. if heā€™s feeling uncomfortable, heā€™ll just get super quiet. after all, who is he to stop you from having fun?? maybe youā€™re better off with this person in the moment,,,, anyway, youā€™ll have to make it up to him with a cuddle session and reassuring him about how much you love him between soft head kisses:)))
kiss - are they a good kisser? what was the first kiss like?
karlā€™s kisses are LOVELYā€”soft and sweet with his hands gently cupping your cheek or jaw or even holding your own. he just loves being able to feel you and be close to you. the first kiss probably happened during a cuddle sessionā€”he would just be so caught up in your presence and softness and scent that his face would move closer to yours without him even trying. youā€™d make soft, shy eye contact for a brief moment before his mouth met yours. help heā€™s so cute ajcividiahhdjfd
love confession - how would they confess to their s/o?
god, heā€™s SUCH a cheeseballā€”heā€™d either do it on your birthday, delivered with a shy smile and giant bouquet, or just blurt it out of nowhere at 2am while the two of you are tired and slap-happy out of your minds. either way, he says it with such hushed reverence that your heart forgets how to work for a few minutes. so many kisses after;))))
marriage - do they want to get married? how would they propose? what would the marriage be like?
like i said earlier, karl can get a bit overwhelmed when thinking about the future. however, he does know that he wants the utter joy you bring him every day to keep going. he likes the idea of a small, pretty wedding with the people youā€™re closest with, but heā€™s also fine with just enjoying what you have. as long as he gets to be with you heā€™s happy:)))
nicknames - what do they call their s/o?
i get the vibe that heā€™d call you by your first initial or ā€œbabyā€ when he wants to be more casual (but he somehow imbues ā€œbabyā€ with so much meaning,,,,, hhhh). uses ā€œsweetieā€ sometimes and also ā€œhoneyā€ after youā€™ve been in a relationship for a while. basically just uses the absolute CUTEST names,,, they come naturally to him bc he loves you so much:ā€™))
on cloud nine - what are they like when they are in love? is it obvious to others? how do they express their feelings?
it is PAINFULLY obvious that karlā€™s in love with you. heā€™s always gushing about you to his mr. beast and minecraft friends, so full of fond stories that everyone groans at so much of a mention of your name (everyone secretly thinks itā€™s adorable tho). the two of you have had so many people compliment you on how cute of a couple you areā€”your joking, fond chemistry is palpable.
pda - are they upfront about their relationship? do they brag about their s/o in front of others? or are they rather shy to kiss, etc. when others are watching?
while itā€™s common knowledge karlā€™s love language is physical touch, heā€™s always considerate of your boundaries while the two of you are around others. heā€™ll likely keep pda to hand holding and an arm slung comfortably over your shoulder. itā€™s just enough to let you feel each other without being too clingy.
quirk - a random ability they have thatā€™s beneficial in a relationship.
karl is super unselfishā€”meaning his closet, nail polishā€”and yes, even his prized monster energy drinksā€”are also yours. he truly believes that sharing is caring, and it makes him incredibly happy when youā€™re wearing one of his iconic sweaters or giving him a grateful smile as he hands you half of his taco bell order.
romance - how romantic are they? what would they do to make their s/o happy? clichƩ or rather creative?
karl is a complete angel and always puts others first, meaning heā€™s an absolute GOD when it comes to romance. heā€™s always laughing and joking with you, and he never runs out of fun things for the two of you to do. at the beginning of your relationship, heā€™ll stick to the tried-and-true formulas of giant teddy bears, chocolate, and shared sweaters. as he gets to know you better, though, heā€™ll take pride in giving you super personal gifts and crafting special date nights he knows youā€™ll love. heā€™s the absolute sweetest:ā€™ā€™))
support - do they help their s/o achieve their goals? do they believe in them?
karl is your biggest fan first and your boyfriend second. he never fails to cheer you on every step of the way and remind you just how incredible you are when youā€™re struggling. he truly believes you can do anythingā€”he is an angel. an ANGEL.
thrill - do they need to try out new things to spice out their relationship? or do they prefer a certain routine?
the two of you have a happy, comfortable rhythm in your relationship. however, you guys definitely try things together. watching a new cartoon, trying a quirky restaurant, or doing weird challenges with each other on stream never feels too much like stepping out of your comfort zone since the two of you are so in sync. even if something backfires, youā€™ve got the safety net of the other person to catch you.
understanding - how well do they know their partner? are they empathetic?
karl has incredible amounts of emotional and interpersonal intelligence. he believes in the innate dignity and beauty of all people, and LOVES getting to know every single bit of who you are. heā€™s completely committed to you, and is the perfect person to help you with whatever youā€™re going through.
value - how important is the relationship to them? what is its worth in comparison to other things in their life?
he considers your relationship to be the best part of his life. youā€™ve been with him through so much, and looking back, itā€™s incredibly clear just how much your presence in his life has changed him for the better. he loves you so much!!!!!
wild card - a random fluff headcanon.
karl often rants happily on and on about his newest cartoon or gaming obsession while the two of you are cuddling. heā€™s just so cute, and more often than not youā€™ll end up kissing all over his freckled cheeks and soft hair. he melts into you like a cat and the two of you just breathe the other in with pure contentment:))))) send help yā€™all are so cute:))))
xoxo - are they very affectionate? do they love to kiss and cuddle?
this goes without saying, but karl is a cuddlebug supreme. if youā€™re not super into cuddling, heā€™ll understand but try and ease you into it so that he can love you the way he really wants to!! copious amounts of cuddles, kisses, and affection are central to his ideal relationship.
yearning - how do they copeĀ when theyā€™re missing their partner?
poor karl gets so lonely without you!! youā€™ll facetime him when youā€™re gone for even a night, and heā€™ll pick up wearing one of your sweatshirts. ā€œmiss me that much??ā€ you tease, and he can only nod and pout. expect millions of wish you were heres and miss you babys and canā€™t wait to hug u agains spam texted to you. lots of snapchats of him giving puppy dog eyes to the camera and cuddling stuffed animals will also be sent. he canā€™t help itā€”he just adores you and is constantly pouting until youā€™re back.
zeal - are they willing to go to great lengths for the relationship? if so, what will they do?
youā€™re karlā€™s everything, and heā€™ll do anything to make sure that your relationship is happy, healthy, and beneficial for both of you. thankfully, though, heā€™s such a sweetheart that making sure things are running smoothly isnā€™t much of a task at all!!

trial and error pt. 2 [senku x reader]
NOT ME FORGETTING TO POST CHAPTER TWO LMAOOO SORRY HERE IT IS THO
SHIPPING: SENKU X READER
PREMISE: [Name] had always known Senku was a little bit of an oddball but thatā€™s what made him so interesting to her as children. Now in the Stone World, heā€™s only even more interesting what with his claims about shooting up to a million years worth of technology back, but some things never change with him; specifically on the concept of love. As a way to get him to think about it as something other than ā€œdisgusting feelingsā€ she proposes for him to think of it differently, though it seems to be going in a direction she never expected.
PART ONEĀ - PART TWO - PART THREE
{ā€“*ā€“}
CHAPTER TWO: CONTEMPLATION
How did I get myself into this situation? [Name] asked herself desperately, watching Ruri shuffle around her hut, staring at the dresses given by the village women lined up neatly on the floor. She held up a blue dress [Name]ā€™s way, who only stared at the shortened skirt. Just the look alone was enough for Ruri to understand that she didnā€™t like it, causing her to giggle at the reaction.
ā€œYou donā€™t seem to be happy about this even though you were the one who gave Senku the idea.ā€ Ruri stated as she kneeled behind her to start braiding [Name]ā€™s unruly hair.
ā€œJust because I gave him the idea doesnā€™t mean I wanted to be his little test subject.ā€ [Name] groaned. An unreadable look passed Ruri as she watched the younger girlā€™s growing discomfort. If she was even more redder, she wouldā€™ve matched what she had looked like a few hours ago.
ā€œHuh?ā€ [Name] asked as she stared at Senku, who only looked at her pointedly. Quickly, blood rushed on every part of her face as she started stutter. ā€œWha--I--you did not just say what I thought I heard you say.ā€
ā€œWhat part did you not understand?ā€ Senku asked dismissively, talking as if he hadnā€™t just asked out his childhood friend on a date. ā€œI might as well take you on one to get good feedback. No one else gives any as specifc as you.ā€
Feedback.
Feedback.
The word kept repeating in [Name]ā€™s head, almost making her dizzy. What did she expect, though? She told him, a scientist, to treat it like an experiment. Test a hypothesis. She was pretty sure he only wanted to take her in particular because (1) he wanted good feedback, like he had said, and (2) if there was even a slight chance he was going to take another girl on a date, Senku was going to force [Name] to come along to examine and analyze. Which was, by common sense, not really going to be a date.
ā€œOi, you donā€™t say that to a girl, especially if you just asked her out.ā€ Chrome called out, punching Senku on the shoulder. ā€œNot to mention isnā€™t that a breach in--what was it? Ethnics? Right?ā€
ā€œEthics.ā€ Gen corrected before nodding in confirmation, looking at the two friends. ā€œThereā€™s a lot of things that could go wrong because youā€™re not following the right rules here, Senku-chan. Wouldnā€™t it be better to just pair up two different villagers who are single and see how romance can be attainable from there?ā€
[Name] could see slight movements from her side, where a few of the younger villagers turned a hue of pink as they glanced at one another, probably thinking about the prospect of being one of Senkuā€™s experiements. Seeing that the benefits outweighing the negative prospects (not getting injured in any way possible, no one being able to see them except possibly Senku, and the prospects of a lover), it looked like a few of them were already making the decision to be part of it.
But this was Senku. He wasnā€™t about to play matchmaker if he himself couldnā€™t even find a reason to think that love wasnā€™t some illogical construct to fill up human loneliness. She wasnā€™t the only who was thinking that, though, as Kohaku spoke up.
ā€œBut this is about Senku thinking he canā€™t have those types of feelings so its gonna have to be him.ā€ She replied blandly. ā€œ[Name] was probably chosen because he wants her to be there to watch him for any signs, regardless if its here being taken on a date or not.ā€
ā€œThat and she proposed the idea so sheā€™s going to do it.ā€ Senku piped up, sending [Name] a teasing grin.
[Name], burning even redder, stuttered some more. ā€œYou-Youā€™ve got to be kidding me Senku. This must be some type of joke. I only said that to make conversation.ā€
ā€œIt was an interesting conversation and a weird statement that I wanna experiment on. Nothing less expected from you, though, [Name].ā€ Senku replied as he kept slurping at the last of his ramen. ā€œBesides its not like you have anything to do tonight.ā€
ā€œYeah, but--wait, tonight? Donā€™t you have get things in order--start out a claim, set up the experiment?ā€ [Name] rambled, now even more confused.Ā
Kohaku met Chromeā€™s eyes with a deadpanned expression. Leave it to [Name] to treating it like an actual experiment and finding the faults. Though, Senku wasnā€™t usually one to leave out so many variables that could ruin the experiment.
ā€œThese are special cicumstances; have you ever participated in your own experiments? Adjustments will be made, yeah, but we might as well start it today and talk about it during the date. Just meet me by the bridge tonight. Weā€™ll go to the field, go on a date, and then you can report to me anything you saw. Sound good? Cool. Now lets get back to work.ā€ Senku said, standing up dusting off his pants, leaving a bewildered [Name] and possibly most of the village in his wake.
If it hadnā€™t been for a few of the village women, [Name] wouldnā€™t have been pulled out of her daze and internal panic. Sheā€™s had crushes on boys, yeah, but going on a date? Not really. She was too busy with school and helping her mother out at the store. There were a few times where she had almost gone on a one, but something always made her call in for a raincheck and then never proceeding afterwards.
But here she was 3,700 years later, sitting in a priestessā€™s hut, getting ready to go on a date with the worldā€™s biggest asshole.
Kohaku had been the one to think about bringing the younger girl up to Ruri, explaining what had went down. Surprisingly, the village priestess was the least bit shocked about the events, deciding to (calmly) agree anyways to help relieve some of the immense stress [Name] was feeling. At the mention of Ruri helping created some domino effect with the village women, all offering to help [Name] get ready, much to her dismay.
ā€œIts not like Senkuā€™s gonna make the effort to dress nicely. I swear he wouldnā€™t have showered if I hadnā€™t made Chrome and Kinro drag him to the river a few days ago! Not to mention heā€™s only doing this to prove a point; thatā€™s why heā€™s rushing it so quickly. So I really donā€™t think all of you should be treating this as anything special.ā€ [Name] tried to reason as she watched the women pull up rope-like jewelry up to her body.
Kohaku scoffed. ā€œIts not like boys know how to take care of themselves in the first place. Iā€™m pretty sure one of the men in the village has his head screwed on properly or most likely Gen is gonna make him dress up just a little bit. Not to mention if this is an experiment then heā€™s most likely not trying to botch it to just prove a point.ā€
ā€œThen why was he being soā€¦ Soā€¦ā€ [Name] trailed off, not quite putting a word on it.
ā€œAdamant?ā€ Ruby offered as she held up a pretty necklace with a jewel attached to it.
ā€œExcited?ā€ Garnet said next as she pushed her chin up to spread something on her mouth. Lipstick? [Name] inquired. I guess the need for makeup never changes after so many years.
ā€œNot really excited but--hold on, didnā€™t you three want to go on a date with Senku? I thought youā€™d be mad or something.ā€ [Name] stated, clearly remembering the usual formula of girlā€™s behaviors during the modern era. It usually involved in some type of ā€œshe said he saidā€ situation, where rumors ensued. At the very least, the three sisters should have been upset with her for Senkuā€™s selection in dates.
Sapphire shrugged as she plucked at [Name]ā€™s baggy dress. ā€œWe were for a few hours, but we might as well help since you look like you donā€™t know the first thing about going on a date.ā€
ā€œWha--Hey!ā€ [Name] retorted, offended before backtracking. I mean, itā€™s not like theyā€™re wrong.
ā€œMaybe he actually likes you.ā€ Kohaku suggested as she sat across from [Name]. Silence filled the room as all the girls stared at them. A moment passed between the two girls as they looked at one another until [Name] bursted out laughing, almost smearing her cheek against the lipstick hovering in front of her.
ā€œNot possible. Iā€™m pretty sure he sees me more of a germ than a person. Not to mention heā€™s never really found the girls in his own grade--the ones older than me--attractive so whatā€™s the likely chance he sees me that way?ā€ She asked when she stopped. She recalled a rumor swirling around the school about Senku rejecting over 10 girls during Valentineā€™s Day, all of them varying in popularity and looks.Ā
ā€œYou donā€™t give yourself enough credit, [Name]-san.ā€ Ruri commented as she held another dress up to her, this one looking a little more decent. ā€œYouā€™re easily one of the prettiest girls here.ā€
ā€œDonā€™t make me laugh againā€¦ā€ [Name] mumbled to herself, flinching when she felt Sapphire poke at her waist once again. ā€œOi, why are are you poking me?ā€
ā€œIā€™m trying to see what your shape is like so we can let you try on one of the dresses.ā€ Sapphire replied, pouting. ā€œWhy do you have to wear such baggy clothes?ā€
ā€œPracticality.ā€ Was the only response [Name] gave as she tried to keep still when makeup was being put on her.
ā€œThatā€™s a lame excuse. I bet youā€™re just hiding the fact you have small boobs.ā€
ā€œMy boobs have nothing to do with my clothes. Besides, small boobs or not, it shouldnā€™t matter what people think about them--!ā€ [Name] yelled out, embarrassed, as a dress was thrown onto her lap.
It was blue, like most of the villagerā€™s clothing, but it seemed more simple and less body-hugging like most of the clothes. It flowed down near the bust, where it had folded nicely around it to adjust to anyone wearing it. The sleeves were puffy and ended where her biceps began, looking kind of like neatly made muffins. Instead of a rope, a thin piece of cloth of the same color was tied to the front, giving a nice, simple finish for the clothing.
If Mom was still alive, sheā€™d probably be looking at how well done this dress was with just a simple loom and needle. [Name] thought as she marveled at the tiny needlework near the waist, creating tiny little flowers near the top. Looking up, she met Ruriā€™s gentle smile. ā€œThat should fit you since one of the village women is identical to your body shape. Now, lets get you dressed; you have to meet up with Senku soon.ā€

怌fourteen怍 chapter 1
"Yuri did confess to me about one crush. First one he ever had, Iā€™d wager, from how nervous he seemed. I had expected it to be Lady Estellise here,ā€ Hanks says, the corners of his eyes crinkling mischievously as she flusters, ā€œbut the one detail he did give me certainly ruled that out quick.ā€ ā€œO-oh?ā€ Estelle stammers. ā€œMmm, well. Apparently whoever they are, theyā€™re significantly older than him. About 14 years, I think he said.ā€
On the nature of Yuri's first crush.
He hadnā€™t thought much of it at first.
Hanksā€™s fond babbling about Yuri over their extremely well-earned dinner is incredibly revealing about the usually cool-headed leader of their motley crew. The old man proves himself a riveting story-teller, keeping their entire party entertained for hours on end despite the incredibly long and taxing 48 sleepless hours theyā€™ve had.
(ā€˜Though there was almost a permanent sleep in there for some of us,ā€™ Raven finds himself thinking morbidly, before digging his bitten-down nails as deep into his ankles as he can to distract himself)
It feels like the only time any of them stop smiling and laughing is to take another mouthful from their bowls of curry, piled high from the seemingly endless and eternal pots of the stuff in the knightā€™s mess hall (or in Ritaā€™s case, to test out another formula against the system Alexeiā€™s locked the princess into - luckless so far, but sheā€™s yet to lose determination).
Hanks has provided all sorts of anecdotes: the adventures of a baby Yuri who had just learned to walk, quicker to his feet than Flynn but still only babbling in response to the youngerā€™s full fledged scolding - their dynamic had formed incredibly early on, it seemed; fond recollections of helping him to learn to bind properly, their first real bonding experience that had endeared them to each other as adoptive-grandfather-and-grandson; prideful recounts of Yuriā€™s development from childhood cynophobia into a renowned dog-lover, of all the other little things Yuri had been scared of as a child and grown out of in time (and those he hadnā€™t - Raven makes a few mental notes for later reference); all the fights Yuri and Flynn had gotten into over the years, and the brief interlude where they had dated in their teens (ā€˜If anything,ā€™ he laughs, ā€˜the bickering became even more frequent at that point - thank heavens they didnā€™t last!ā€™); and of course, everyoneā€™s old favourite - that one time 2 years ago when heā€™d thrown Adecor into the river on tax day.
Ravenā€™s heard that one on a number of occasions from all four of the people whoā€™d been present when it occurred - it somehow never gets any less funny.
While most of Brave Vesperia and it's honorary members are thrilled to learn more about their favourite rebel, Yuri himself is less than happy about Hanks laying out his life story for everyone to see. It's plain on his face - the grimace of a man who appreciates how much his parents love him but would really prefer they didn't tell his date about the time he streaked naked through the town and peed in a fountain at 5 years old. His embarrassment is palpable, a pink glow to his ears that slowly spreads to his cheeks the longer and more intimate Hanksā€™ stories become.
Itā€™s as he brings up Yuriā€™s childhood dream of joining the knights so he could sweep a princess off her feet, pointedly winking in Estelleā€™s direction, that their so-called fearless leader bolts to his feet. He spins on his heel, making a beeline to the other side of the room, and plonks himself violently between a bewildered Adecor and Boccos, immediately thrown from their confusion into annoyance as Yuriā€™s food slops all over both of them.
His previous dining companions merely snicker in his wake, Hanks chuckling fondly.
ā€œHeā€™s always been so easily riled, that boy. If this is how flustered he gets over just you lot hearing all this then I canā€™t even imagine how heā€™ll be when he finally shacks up with someone.ā€™
ā€œWait, but didnā€™t you say he dated Flynn when they were younger?ā€ Karol asks, head cocking to one side.
ā€œWell between you, me and our gatepost friends here,ā€ the old man says, leaning in - they all follow suit, as Hanksā€™ eyes pointedly glance over to Flynn, ā€œI wouldnā€™t want to hurt his feelings if he hasnā€™t realised, but I always got the impression that Yuri was far less invested in their relationship than Flynn. It was Flynn who asked him out, after all.ā€
ā€œMy, that does surprise me. Yuriā€™s always seemed like heā€™d be the more proactive of the two when it comes to romance.ā€ Judy muses.
Hanks raises his eyebrows, thin lips twisting into an uneasy frown.
ā€œWait a minute,ā€ Rita says, leaning even further forward. ā€œYouā€™re not saying Yuri never had feelings for him are you?ā€
He winces, gaze averting. Raven feels his eyebrows shoot into his hairline.
ā€œTheyā€™ve always loved each other, of course. But the tone of that love seems to differ between them. Their relationship was what happened when they tried to figure that out, it seems, but ultimatelyā€¦ā€
ā€œThey just werenā€™t compatible as partners of that type?ā€
ā€œRight.ā€ he nods to Estelle. ā€œIn all honesty, Yuri might give off the air of someone with considerable relationship experience, but itā€™s Flynn who attracts more attention. And seems more interested in others in turn.ā€
Raven finds his gaze wandering between the two in question - Flynn has managed to find himself eating amidst a small crowd, knights and lower quarter folks alike, all of them doting on him and telling him stories, and him listening attentively to each of them in turn. Yuri, meanwhile isā€¦ wrestling with all three of the ex-Schwann Brigadeā€™s most prominent knights simultaneously. Astounding.
ā€œYeah that tracks.ā€ he finds himself murmuring, nails scratching through the chest hair that rises above the collar of his shirt. Even if Flynn wasnā€™t the most eager to please others between the two, the young man radiates a natural charm that draws others to him like a moth to a flame - itā€™s hard to forget how he was upstaged the time he took him drinking in Dahngrest. Yuri, meanwhile, has a proclivity for trouble and a tendency to stick his foot in his mouth with his wit. While endearing, he canā€™t imagine itā€™s the most efficient for pursuing new connections - even if heā€™s managed to attract all of the motley crew Ravenā€™s currently sat with.
ā€œSo Flynnā€™s a secret ladiesā€™ man and Yuri, despite all the pomp and swagger, has absolutely no game?ā€ Rita snickers, casting a wry look across the room at Yuri that heā€™s too distracted to notice.
ā€œWell I donā€™t know about that. Flynnā€™s a manā€™s man if nothing else, never shown interest in women to my knowledge. Butā€¦ I donā€™t think Yuriā€™s ever actually been interested in dating , full stop.ā€
ā€œNo way, really?!ā€ Karol barks. The exclamation draws the attention of the groups sat closest to them, even Flynn, momentarily, before they go busily back to their meals. Flynnā€™s expression as he looks at them is pondering, almost puppy-like, and Karolā€™s panic is practically visible as they watch him seemingly wrestle with whether to come over and see what the fuss is about. Then the woman at his side taps a hand to his elbow gently, and his manners win out - she successfully steals his attention back around, all of his interest in their discussion completely forgotten.
ā€œWell. It certainly seems that way anyway. I remember him asking me, back when they dated, how he would know if his feelings for someone were romantic. He didnā€™t seem to understand my answer very well."
ā€œThatā€™s unexpected. I suppose my advances have all been vain!ā€ Patty whines. Raven finds himself snickering - whether Pattyā€™s affections are genuine or not is one mystery he's yet to solve, but her playing it up is never any less entertaining or fun to tease.
ā€œThough now that I think about itā€¦ he did confess to me about one crush. First one he ever had, Iā€™d wager, from how nervous he seemed.ā€
Patty surges forward onto her hands and knees, scrambling to get in Hanksā€™ face. Surprisingly, heā€™s not that caught off guard - perhaps used to it from Yuriā€™s exuberance as a child, or that other kid from the lower quarter whoā€™s off chasing Repede on the far side of the room.
ā€œI need all the details, matey! Donā€™t spare a single one!ā€
Hanks chuckles.
ā€œIā€™m very sorry young lady, but he didnā€™t tell me all that much! I had expected it to be Lady Estellise here,ā€ he says, the corners of his eyes crinkling mischievously as she flusters, ā€œbut the one detail he did give me certainly ruled that out quick.ā€
ā€œO-oh?ā€ Estelle stammers.
ā€œMmm, well. Apparently whoever they are, theyā€™re significantly older than him. About 14 years, I think he said.ā€
ā€œMy my! Thatā€™s quite the considerable age gap.ā€ Judy coos, tone teasing in spite of Yuriā€™s absence. She turns over to look at him, sitting atop a pile of knights and triumphantly tucking into a second of four bowls (spoils of war, Raven would wager) - they all do, in fact.
ā€œKidā€™s got taste at least. Nothinā€™ quite like the mature allure of an older lady~'' Raven sing-songs, half-joking. Rita jabs him in the side harshly.
ā€œShut up old man-- you said you thought it was Estelle he had a crush on right? So are you saying this is recent? ā€
Itā€™s like a switch flips in all of their heads simultaneously. Faces filled with shock whip to look at Hanks, who sits sheepishly clutching his bowl.
ā€œWhoops. Mightā€™ve let a little too much information slip on that one. I was probably meant to keep that detail privateā€¦ā€
ā€œOh my go--ā€
Rita slaps a hand over Karolā€™s mouth before his shriek draws too many eyes over. They all meet each other's' gaze one by one - Yuri's crushing on someone for the first time ever at this exact moment - before turning to look back at Yuri again. Heā€™s mid-mouthful, spoon clutched in his hand like a shovel and sauce dripping down his chin, as he turns to survey his surroundings and catches their eyes.
Tumblr media
ā€œWhat?ā€ he chokes out around his mouthful, just audible over the bustle of the rest of the room. He must see the sheer shock on their faces, as concern starts to cross his face and his gaze wanders to Hanks. ā€œWait, what did you tell them, old man?ā€
Hanks chooses that exact moment to get up, incredibly swiftly for a man his age.
ā€œWell, thank you all for keeping me company, kids, but I must be off toā€¦ check on other people inā€¦ other parts of the castle. Right. Goodbye.ā€
The speed at which he heads for the door is quite remarkable - Yuri barely manages to scramble off his knight-pile-cum-throne before heā€™s gone from sight, and presumably halfway down the corridor before Yuri makes it out of the room after him.
Itā€™s a shock, that much is certain. Raven hadnā€™t thought Yuri would be interested in older women - or people he supposes, heā€™s never really shown any inclination to anyone before in a romantic sense, so certainly not any specific gender. Heā€™d never much struck him as the type.
But then he hadnā€™t struck him as the type to be interested in any type of relationship until this curveball of a conversation had come along. So hey, why not. If Yuri was into older people, he certainly wasnā€™t intending to torment him about it. Other than maybe one opportunely timed quip.
Honestly, he really hadnā€™t thought much about it at first.
But then the kids throw their own curveball.
ā€œI canā€™t believe Yuri likes someone so much older than him!! Like, I guess I get the appeal of someone a little older than you for likeā€¦ security or something, I dunno. But man, 14 years!!ā€ Karol exclaims, as quietly as he can for his excitement. ā€œI wonder if we know who it is.ā€
Rita barks a laugh, catching a distracted Patty off-guard. She begins anew whatever calculations sheā€™d been making on her fingers as Rita shrugs exaggeratedly.
ā€œI bet itā€™s some big-boobed motherly-figure in the lower quarter or something.ā€
ā€œWell if all he wanted was big boobs and a nurturing personality then Iā€™ve been here this whole time, all he had to do was ask!ā€ Judith sighs, sly smirk giving away her lack of sincerity.
ā€œHey,ā€ Patty pipes up suddenly, drawing their attention. ā€œIsnā€™t Raven about 14 years older than Yuri?ā€
He feels the cogs in his brain whirr to a stop.
Suddenly, he is thinking very much about it.
ā€œOh yeah!ā€ he hears Karol chirp. No doubt he checks the calculations on his own fingers, but Raven doesnā€™t register it if so, hard as heā€™s trying just to think at all. ā€œHaha, thatā€™s a weird coincidence!ā€
Estelle giggles.
ā€œImagine if it was Raven he had a thing for!ā€
He feels their eyes on him instantly, but it takes a moment for his brain to catch up. His own eyes must be wide as saucers, as they look at him, the mirth starting to fall from Estelleā€™s expression - he forces a ridiculous grin to his face.
ā€œHaha, yeah imagine that! Someone like Yuri fallinā€™ for a washed up old fart like me!ā€ he cackles, voice strained even to his own ears. ā€œThatā€™d be ridiculous!!ā€
The kids buy it though, Karol laughing along before pulling the others back into their debate about exactly who the mystery object of Yuriā€™s affections could be. Itā€™s Estelle whose gaze lingers on him, just a moment or two longer, as the facade starts to crack, but she must see it - the silent plea in his eyes - as she turns back to the others not a moment later.
If anyone notices that Raven is mentally tapped out until they all go their separate ways for the night, then theyā€™re at least polite enough not to mention it.
ā‡·-------------
Raven is a strange one.
This is Yuriā€™s third time meeting the man (or fourth, if the time Rita threatened to set him alight in Capua Torim counts as an actual encounter) and in all honesty, itā€™s hard to get a read on him past him being very obviously shady.
He seems as though he might be someone of consequence, if the quality of information he so casually throws like bones to random guards is actually as quality as he would have them believe. Either way heā€™s certainly silver-tongued, plying the others in Yuriā€™s makeshift travelling party into submission fairly easily despite their initial apprehension about him. Karol and Estelle are charmed by him, by his goofy antics if not the lolloping drawl of his accent, though they make no effort to hide the fact that they find him fishy. While Rita is far less taken, she seems to be placated by him taking her punishments, both fire and fists, like a champ.
The charm isnā€™t exactly visible to the naked eye though. He skulks at the back of the group, heavy footed and posture slouched. His clothes all seem far too big for him, obscuring the shape of his body in a way Yuri supposes is meant to make him seem unassuming, and heā€™s already displayed a number of habits that he knows would make any upper quarter nobleā€™s toes curl - picking at his ears and the skin around his nails, before chewing at the nails themselves.
He has to admit though, heā€™s quite handsome in the face beneath the mess of dusty brown hair. Not in the same way as Flynn, with his big blue eyes and tousled blonde hair, the very picture of a storybook knight. His crooked nose, chapped lips, stubbly chin and hollow cheeks certainly make for a more unconventional type of attractive, but they all come together to create a certain appeal. The brightness of his eyes certainly helps too.
Also the combat prowess. Fighting ability is always an attractive quality in Yuriā€™s opinion, but especially in a travelling companion.
For a self-professed old man, Ravenā€™s far more nimble than Yuri had expected. Sure, heā€™d made quite the getaway back in Capua Nor after heā€™d sold them out, but heā€™d assumed thatā€™d been a one-off desperate sprint, not the norm. Apparently he was wrong, based on the nimble footwork he employs to dart out of the way of a particularly feisty howler. It doesnā€™t escape his notice how Karol nearly falls flat on his ass when Raven rushes past him and twists himself at an insane angle to fire an arrow across the way, skewering a beetle between its mandibles before it can take a bite out of Estelle.
ā€œWoah, Raven!! Yuri, youā€™ve got some serious competition for your acrobatics now!!ā€
The bark of laughter leaves his throat unwittingly.
ā€œI didnā€™t realise there even was a competition!ā€
He sees Rita roll her eyes as she releases a torrent of water behind her, clearly disbelieving him and with good reason; heā€™s never been one to back down from a potential competition. He breaks away from the corner of the forest floor heā€™s been holding down, using the momentum to propel himself up and over Raven, carrying it into his sword as he flips to crash it down into the skull of another monster. Raven whistles appreciatively as it disappears into dust.
ā€œNot bad, young ā€˜un!ā€
He throws a smirk over his shoulder, ego swelling at the genuine awe on Ravenā€™s face.
ā€œHowā€™s about it, old man? First to twenty?ā€
The awe transforms into a grimace in an instant.
ā€œAhhh, I dunno about that. Olā€™ Ravenā€™s never really been one for competitions, let alone effort. ā€
He scoffs.
ā€œOh, come on. Weā€™ve got no choice but to fight to get deeper into the forest anyway, right? So why not make a game of it? Not like itā€™ll actually be any more effort than you were already putting in.ā€
Raven purses his lips, seemingly unconvinced. His eyes narrow slightly as he stares off, deep in thought, the blue-green seemingly increasing in intensity. For all heā€™s been putting on the act of a court jester, Yuri is certain in that moment that thereā€™s a deep intelligence to the older man; something unspoken, a wisdom beyond his years.
(Not that he knows how old Raven is but. Well, he gets the feeling that while heā€™s certainly older than he and his travelling companions, heā€™s not actually pushing middle-aged yet like he makes out)
Fwip!
He comes back to himself to see Ravenā€™s face closer than before, upside down, chin in line with his collarbone. His bow arm (and subsequently the bow itself) is extended past his shoulder, the other loose by his head having just fired. Behind him thereā€™s a thunk. A screech. A pop. And then silence.
ā€œLooks like thatā€™s one ta me~ā€ Raven coos, eyes hooded as he smirks. He rolls his back, lithe and catlike, to stand himself back upright, stretching his arms out until his shoulders crack. For all his complaining about aches and pains so far (extremely numerous for the time theyā€™ve been travelling with him, maybe an hour at most), he certainly doesnā€™t move as though he has any joint issues.
Tumblr media
Despite his shock, he finds himself laughing.
If heā€™s honest with himself, heā€™s just as charmed by Raven as the kids are. Heā€™s never made a connection quite like this one; with someone who can go toe to toe with his dry wit, and make it out the other side without being angry with him. Rita had been the closest (since Niren at least, but Yuri prefers to avoid thinking about the only father he ever knew if he can). But while Ritaā€™s great with a back and forth, sheā€™s easily riled, easily flustered. It only takes one slightly wrong jab and she gets stroppy, or else loses all interest in the situation.
Raven, for all his strangeness, has so far matched Yuri every step of the way. Theyā€™ve fallen so easily into a steady banter, something of their own personal comedy routine for just the two of them, some form of it present even from their first encounter way back in that jail cell. To have someone who can appreciate his snark, and give it back just as good while they both know itā€™s all in good fun? Heā€™d never realised just how much heā€™d appreciate a relationship like that.
So yeah, Ravenā€™s a little suspicious. But as far as Yuriā€™s concerned, heā€™s willing to offer him the benefit of the doubt for the strange comfort he gets from their repartee, just so long as he doesnā€™t do anything too crazy.
He slaps Raven on the shoulder, moving past him to continue deeper into the oversized brush.
ā€œYou got me, old man. But donā€™t you worry, you wonā€™t be holding that lead for long.ā€
Raven merely cackles in response, wordlessly filing in behind him.
-------------ā‡ø
Thereā€™s only one real constant within their travelling party, and thatā€™s that the sleeping arrangements are ever-changing.
It takes a little while for him to notice, though in his defence the first week or so heā€™s with them is certainly not a typical week. In the more recent days, theyā€™d gotten lucky with inns having enough beds for all of them, but the first few nights had been entirely sleepless in the hustle and bustle of, yā€™know, stopping a war, taking down the Blood Alliance and colliding with an actual genuine-article ghost ship.
(Heā€™s still not sure what that was all about if heā€™s being entirely honest, but heā€™s old and ā€œā€œwiseā€ā€ enough by now that he knows there are some things in this world that you simply shouldnā€™t question)
So itā€™s Nordopolica where he finds himself bedding down with his new companions for the first time. The constant hustle and bustle of Palestralleā€™s workers and the fresh colosseum season unfortunately means there isnā€™t much free in terms of rooms. On the plus side, the three double beds theyā€™re provided are plenty enough space for them all to be able to sleep comfortably; Fomalhautā€™s rooms are quite spacious, nothing at all like the army barracks of his youth (though he supposes that should be expected from a city that considers itself something of an entertainment hub).
Raven takes his time ambling in behind everyone else, absently watching how effortlessly Repede transfers his pipe from one side of his toothy maw to the other. Rushing would be pointless, in his opinion, because he can already envision how everyone will double-up. Rita is sure to claim a spot beside the princess, for whose sake she could not be more clearly continuing to travel for despite her protests, and Judy wonā€™t want to get lumped with a snotty (though admittedly quite sweet) brat or some dirty old man she hardly knows - heā€™s gonna get stuck with the kid, and the two of them can have a very one-sided competition over whose shitty little brain can give them the most nightmares in one night, and Raven will be perfectly content with that, thank you very much.
(Itā€™ll be him who wins that one - hormone-induced nightmares are nothing compared to the horrors your brain can produce when you have blood and a war on your hands)
And then Karol throws him for a loop by tossing his bag semi-gently to the floor before diving into bed after Rita , of all people.
She hardly even makes a fuss. Thereā€™s a yelp - what sounds like it could be the start of the protest Raven would expect from such a combination - before she settles almost immediately.
ā€œJust make sure you donā€™t kick me awake again, got it?ā€ she barks pointedly at him, before rolling to face away from him and promptly cocooning herself in the blanket. He laughs at her, kicking off his shoes and fluffing up his pillow, seemingly content.
Wide-eyed, Raven turns to the girls - surely he canā€™t be the only one caught off-guard by this, it seems unthinkable for Rita not to put up a fight to sharing with Karol , and thereā€™s an exclamation of surprise right on the tip of his tongue - only to find them claiming the second bed for themselves, Judy helping Estelle to unfasten the complicated buckles of her dress. He bites his words back, head whipping away; much as the image of a pervert works as a brilliant cover to convince the kids of his idiocy, peeping on the possible-crown princess as she gets changed is certainly not a thing heā€™s ever aspired to.
And so he comes face to face with the final bed. His bed he supposes, strange as it may still be to him. Yuriā€™s already making himself comfy on the left side, shirt and jacket thrown over the bottom edge of the bed frame. He stretches his arms up and over his head, muscles rippling as he yawns. He catches Ravenā€™s eye as they fall back down, a mischievous glint flickering in his eyes.
ā€œLooks like itā€™s you and me, old man.ā€ he says, patting the sheets next to him with a wiggle of his eyebrows.
He can feel his own lips quirk to mirror Yuriā€™s, even as he fights to push down the instinctive panic.
ā€œAnd here I was hopinā€™ ta share with my darlinā€™ Judy!ā€ he whines playfully, flopping down beside him face first in a show of dramatism.
ā€œSorry, Raven. I just couldnā€™t miss the chance to cuddle up with Estelle!ā€ comes her voice, sing-songy, from the bed sheā€™s claimed. He can see, as he pushes himself up onto his hands and knees to get better situated, that sheā€™s doing exactly that. Sheā€™s practically spooning the princess, face buried in short pink locks, and Estelle herself looks the very picture of a tomato (not that he wouldnā€™t himself with Judithā€™s considerableā€¦ assets pressed against him).
ā€œWell so long as yer not a cuddler yerself, Mr Lowell.ā€ he jokes, rearranging himself onto his back before pulling the duvet up to his chin. For all that theyā€™re in less than ideal circumstances with sharing beds, heā€™s glad to see Palestralle donā€™t skimp on the furnishings for their inns - the linen is incredibly soft, smooth against the pads of his fingers, and itā€™s a smart fabric choice for an inn in so changeable a climate.
Yuri huffs a laugh.
ā€œI think I can hold myself back this once, just for you.ā€ he says, tone laden with sarcasm. He watches Raven with keen eyes as he lounges on his side, head resting in his hand. Raven wonders how he can sleep like that - how his arm doesnā€™t cramp in the night, doesnā€™t wake him up in a fit of panic when he canā€™t move it, breathing shallow until the blood flow returns. He forgets, sometimes, that not everyone enters a blind panic over the little things.
ā€œWhy, I'm honoured! Yer benevolence knows no bounds!" he coos back, nose scrunching in amusement. Yuri smiles as he reaches back and pats Repede where he stands by the bed - a silent request to turn off the overhead light. The pooch complies, trotting off with a clack of his pipe between his teeth - Ravenā€™s constantly caught off guard by the dogā€™s intelligence, the number of strange things Yuriā€™s managed to teach him (or perhaps that the dog has taught himself? Heā€™s still not fully certain how much of a hand in training him that the young manā€™s had), and this is certainly another for the list.
ā€œDamn right it doesnā€™t. Better make sure you show me the respect I deserve.ā€ he says. He meets his eyes again as the blastia clicks off, dousing them in darkness. They crinkle with mirth, the abyss within softening even more as Karol giggles at their antics on the other side of the room.
They find themselves in a staring contest, of sorts. Or maybe closer to a game of chicken? Heā€™s sure Yuri sees it that way at least, if his unblinking gaze is anything to go by. For him on the other hand itā€™sā€¦ something else. What exactly he canā€™t say. Heā€™s just... transfixed .
Because Yuriā€™s plenty handsome on his own - perhaps even beautiful, if thatā€™s more your thing. Ravenā€™s already seen him turn a great many heads in the short time theyā€™ve been together, including both the illustrious head of Fortuneā€™s Market and the great forgotten war hero himself. Maybe heā€™d even let himself cast an admiring glance his way, if he hadnā€™t picked specifically womaniser for Ravenā€™s bullshit cover-up trait.
But when the sea-breeze blows gently, kicking up the curtains, and the moonlight shines into the room, it catches him just so. The glow is ethereal, transformative, and it brings out the hidden flecks of golden brown in the depths of Yuriā€™s eyes, spins the silk of his dark hair almost chestnut. And just for a moment, he can trick himself into believing sheā€™s here, the Canary herself, laid opposite him with a fond teasing smile, and oh god the hole where his heart used to be aches to reach out and touch her--
But for all her perfections, Caseyā€™s eyes had never glowed quite like that had they? Never stared directly into his soul, made him almost want to bury into her arms and let her shoulder his every burden for him. Her kindness had inspired, but never been so bottomless that he wanted to abuse it, had never come off her in waves to the point it was visible in every little line of her face despite any grandstanding. Never so gentle to the broken that he could almost convince himself that he doesnā€™t need to run, that if heā€™s seen heā€™ll be accepted wholly, flaws and sins and all.
Not like Yuri. Not at all like Yuri.
The curtain drops, or else the clouds must roll in overhead. Either way, the moonlight vanishes, and with it goes the last vestiges of the illusion.
ā€œAye-aye, sir.ā€ he all but murmurs, his voice tighter than just moments ago. He hopes, as Yuriā€™s face twists in concern, that his own face doesnā€™t give away the turmoil of his heart.
ā€œYou alright, old man? You look like youā€™ve seen a ghost.ā€
ā€œHah, maybe I have!ā€ he laughs, but it sounds notably hollow even to him. Still, he doesnā€™t break eye-contact as Yuri seems to peer directly into him, seemingly scanning his every thought and feeling, hope and dream.
The last thing he sees as he slips into sleep is the gentle embrace of the abyss. While his dreams are plagued by nightmares, a broken body bleeding out in the sand, he finds itā€™s the best nightā€™s sleep heā€™s had in years.
-------------ā‡ø
The town is silent, other than the gentle rustle of the sea breeze through the trees and the crunch of the dirt path beneath his feet.
Theyā€™ve been here all day, but Yuriā€™s not sure heā€™s used to how incredibly peaceful Yormgen is yet. Heā€™s not sure he ever will be, either. Heā€™s used to the bustle of the city, the shouting of vendors and newsies in Zaphiasā€™s main market as carts laden with goods and people roll by. It feels like thereā€™s always a dog barking, a clock chiming, a baby crying in the city, and the background noise helps him to switch his brain off in a way that the country never can.
Halure had been quiet to him - the calm atmosphere of the day, the slowness of shop transactions and conversation, had already been a lot, but for there to be a perfect stillness as night fell rather than an increase in bustle as drinkers started to take to the town had been the real whiplash. Despite a relatively large population, the town didnā€™t have a single dedicated bar to its name, and itā€™d thrown Yuri for far more of a loop than heā€™d ever expected.
Yormgen is even stranger. There must be all of fourteen people in this entire town, he thinks, and every single one of them vanished into their houses the moment the sun started to set. The only conversation he's heard that he hasnā€™t been directly involved in since Duke showed up and smashed their apatheia (heā€™d be lying if he said he wasnā€™t still annoyed about that) is that of his own travelling companions bickering over what to make for dinner with their limited ingredients as he stepped away to find their mysterious disappearing old man.
Raven took the loss of the crystal hard. Or at least, Yuri thinks he did. He certainly vanished quickly when they decided to wait around while Rita took some time to investigate. Heā€™d been right next to him one second and then gone the next, before theyā€™d had a chance to agree to meet back up for dinner at sundown. With no one having seen him all day since to let him know, itā€™d fallen on his shoulders to hunt him down and drag him back. Raven mightā€™ve been plenty energetic on their first trip through the desert, but they all know better than to let him make the return journey on an empty stomach. The man eats like a bird at the best of times - he really canā€™t afford to be doing that now.
Heā€™d grumbled and whined about it being him who had to go find him, but in all honesty heā€™s kind of pleased. Heā€™s found himself surprisingly worried about the old man - this is the first time since theyā€™ve started officially travelling together that heā€™s pulled a disappearing act. Normally itā€™s hard to get him to shut up for more than 20 minutes at a time, so the better part of a day without seeing or hearing from him at all is completely unheard of. If his silence doesnā€™t mean heā€™s curled up and died somewhere, then Yuri knows that heā€™s the only one of their party who stands any chance of fetching him with both of them left unscathed.
Heā€™s explored the residential side of the town (if it can truly be called that) extensively already throughout the day. Not that it was hard to do - other than the homes of locals that are a bit further out, the town proper is essentially three big buildings and a deck. Heā€™d quickly concluded that there were very few places to hide a man with a proclivity for such a bright shade of purple amongst the muted timber and the gentle green of the grass. The only conclusion he can come to is that Raven mustā€™ve headed to the other side of town, to the sea of flowers that makes his sinuses itch just looking in their direction.
For all he knows theyā€™ll give him a headache, the flowers are incredibly pretty. It had been the bushes of pink and blue trumpets that had caught his attention in the midday, as Estelle had run over to them in delight and plucked a few. Sheā€™d fashioned a few little fascinators, of sorts (a skill sheā€™d learned in the finishing school she had no doubt been forced to attend as the potential future Empress), and spent the better part of an hour lacing them into everyoneā€™s hair. If he looks back over his shoulder, he knows heā€™ll see Judith wearing the pink blossoms - rhododendron, Estelle had called them - with pride, while Karol nervously fidgets with his own, worried theyā€™ll fall out, ruining the princessā€™s hard work.
Now, however, in the amber light of the sunset, itā€™s the flower tunnel that draws his eye. Not that he hadnā€™t noticed it before - itā€™s impossible to miss, vibrant as it is. But heā€™s never been the biggest fan of yellow, always a little bright for his tastes. The way the light bounces off the thousands of little flowers is certainly eye-catching though, setting them in such a way that their radiance is somehow easier on the eye. Theyā€™re impossible to look away from as he draws closer, some emotion heā€™s unused to, couldnā€™t possibly name, stirring in his chest. The chains dance gently in the breeze, bouncing against each other like a bead curtain, and something about it makes him nostalgic for the familiarity of the Lower Quarter.
Then he spots him, further in, beneath the boughs. His hand rests comfortably on the handle of the knife he keeps at his waist, the other left to the mercy of the breeze as he stares up amidst the blossoms. They bathe him in their glow, mingling with the dying rays of the sun, casting him almost golden . Heā€™s mesmerised by the sight himself, it seems, completely off-guard for the first time in the couple of months Yuriā€™s known him - for all he plays the fool, Yuri would be an even bigger one not to realise how keenly Raven follows the every movement of all those around him.
But right now, he seemsā€¦ defenceless. Open. Fragile. Unaware that a world aside from him and the sea of flowers even exists. He could do whatever he wanted to Raven in this moment, he thinks, and he just knows the man would be equally surprised by anything. Something about that knowledge, this vision makes his chest feel light, almost airy.
The image sears itself into his mind, unbidden, and he knows instantly. No matter how hard he tries heā€™ll never erase it.
ā€œLaburnum.ā€
He startles as Raven speaks. Perhaps he hadnā€™t been as unaware as heā€™d thought.
ā€œHuh?ā€ he grunts dumbly.
ā€œThese flowers. They call ā€˜em Laburnum. Or golden rain in some parts.ā€ he says, flicking his eyes (almost the vibrant green of dense aer with the glow) over to acknowledge Yuri. He goes quickly back to gazing upwards, almost reverent. ā€œPretty apt.ā€
Yuri finds himself eyeing the flowers again as he moves closer. Theyā€™re strangely shaped, the blooms, unlike any heā€™s seen before. The petals curl back and in on themselves, clustered closely together in a way that hides the little shock of red in their centres. Stranger still are the buds, gently curved in a way that reminds him of the plantains heā€™d seen in Dahngrestā€™s market.
From the right angle, they could almost look like birds in flight, or indeed a sudden burst of rainfall.
ā€œYeah, I guess.ā€
Ravenā€™s lips quirk into a smile. His eyebrows set into something pensive, wistful even.
ā€œTheyā€™re pretty rare these days. Didnā€™t think Iā€™d ever get to see a single tree with my own eyes, never mind a whole groveā€¦ā€
The melancholy thatā€™s settled over him like a veil is impossible to ignore, his voice distant as though transported to another time. Thereā€™s a pressure at the base of Yuriā€™s throat as he watches him, finds himself wanting to doā€¦ something. Heā€™s not sure what. Just anything to pull him from his reverie. But of course, in the end all he really knows is sarcasm.
ā€œWouldnā€™t have taken you as the type to know about flowers.ā€
It seems to work somewhat. Though perhaps he shouldnā€™t be so surprised - he and Raven have always been strangely in sync.
ā€œWouldnā€™t be much good with the ladies if I didnā€™t know about little things like flowers, now would I?ā€ he says, finally turning to face Yuri more fully. His eyes soften with mischief, and yet still seem tight withā€¦ well if Yuri had to put a name to it, heā€™d wager it was grief .
A half-joke then; his flower knowledge almost certainly learned on behalf of one lady, though heā€™d wager not women generally at all. After all, for all he seemed to enjoy playing the womaniser, his actions often seemed chosen to purposefully push them away if anything.
Yuri rolls his eyes in faux-annoyance. Raven smiles. It gets closer to meeting his eyes than he expected it to.
ā€œI canā€™t imagine just throwing their names around is especially impressive. Seems more like the absolute bare minimum.ā€ he says, hand coming to rest on a cocked hip. Ravenā€™s smile widens, coaxed out of his shell somewhat by the familiar teasing routine.
ā€œAh, but whoever said I only knew their names?ā€
His eyebrows raise instinctively. To know flowersā€™ names is one thing, but any other details arenā€™t usually common knowledge; their language, how to arrange them, the best methodology for their care all usually things known solely by the upper echelons of society, or else those with enough money in their back pockets to take a chance on starting a related career.
ā€œDonā€™t tell meā€¦ā€ he trails off, fixing Raven with a sceptical look. The old manā€™s face splits into a wide grin, hand coming up to flash a peace sign. Dork, his thinks impulsively as he huffs a laugh, surprised at the fond tone the word takes in his mind. Then quick as the cheer arrives it drops again, leaving the previous melancholic half-smile splayed across Ravenā€™s face.
ā€œThese wouldnā€™t be much good in a bouquet though, pretty as they are. If beinā€™ deadly poisonous wasnā€™t enough, theyā€™re usually used as a symbol of the forsaken. ā€ he muses, the last word spat like something dirty from his mouth.
ā€œWho the hell would look at these and decide that? ā€ Yuri barks out. His expression must look as bewildered as he feels - Raven laughs at him, gentle but genuine.
ā€œYeah, it seems like a lot, right?ā€ he says. His gaze drifts away from Yuriā€™s, losing focus and staring past him, through his shoulder. ā€œShe always liked them though, in spite of that.ā€
ā€œ...She?ā€ he asks, carefully. He doesnā€™t want to sound eager, too nosey. Doesnā€™t want to push when the old man is this fragile. But he canā€™t help his curiosity - this is the first heā€™s mentioned of his past, the first clue to piecing together the admittedly fascinating mystery that is Raven. The man himself seems to realise it too, that with just one sentence heā€™s revealed a huge part of himself he hasnā€™t previously. Graciously, he doesnā€™t scramble to hide it away as Yuri mightā€™ve expected.
ā€œAh. Old friend.ā€ he says softly, as though divulging a secret. ā€œSheā€™sā€¦ gone now. But she was always a big fan of flowers. These werenā€™t her favourite but. She liked ā€˜em plenty.ā€
It slips out of his mouth before he can stop himself.
ā€œNot like you to spill your past out in the open like this, old man.ā€
It takes all of his mental strength not to kick himself as Ravenā€™s expression shutters, the nostalgia, longing , vanishing from his face in favour of something more carefully guarded. His eyes though, expressive as they are, canā€™t hide the pain.
ā€œAh. I suppose they got me feelinā€™ a little nostalgic. Forgive me.ā€
The silence stretches out between them for miles and miles as he watches Raven, Raven in turn watching the dancing laburnum above his head. His eyes flicker from bloom to bloom, as though cataloguing each one carefully, trying to commit their shape, their profile to memory. Yuri finds his eyes drawn to his lips as they purse, a gentle pout taut in a manner that gives away the nervous chewing of the inside of his mouth. His thick eyelashes fan over his cheekbones as he blinks, and Yuri hates the silence of the country, because itā€™s weird sappy shit like this that the bustle of the city helps him to avoid thinking about.
Ravenā€™s a lot like these flowers , is the thought that springs to his mind, unprompted. And itā€™s ridiculous really. Completely nonsensical. The kind of thing Karol might come out with on a night where heā€™s overtired, that theyā€™d all tease him for mercilessly until they pass out. But thereā€™s nothing to distract him from it - heā€™s surrounded by the evidence, and the more he tries to ignore it the more sense it seems to make to him. The two parts of his brain war with each other, unrelenting, and he can feel the push and pull starting to show on his face.
Then a single blossom falls from the canopy above. It lands perfectly atop Ravenā€™s bangs, perched there like a peepit in a tree, and he canā€™t fight the analogy anymore - Raven certainly looks forsaken, in that instant, the pain swimming in his eyes. And yet usually so bright and cheery, like the flowerā€™s vibrant colouring, almost desperate for attention as he jokes around-- and then pushing people away, like a poison, when they try to get close. An exterior crafted to make you underestimate him, and yet a hidden strength, swift and deadly on the battlefield. A sunny disposition that washes over you like a summer rain, calming and refreshing.
Heā€™s not sure anymore if the golden glow bouncing off Ravenā€™s skin is from the flowers, or just simply the man himself.
A light breeze jostles the flower, and it slips from his hair. The strange shape hooks itself onto the crook of his nose and it wedges firmly, even as the wind picks up, cascading more petals down onto them both. Raven either ignores it, or doesnā€™t notice, his eyes falling closed as he lets nature wash over him.
He steps closer carefully, unthinkingly. He feels as a moth to a flame, though why he couldnā€™t say. Heā€™s unfamiliar with the stirring in his chest that rises at the sight, doesnā€™t understand his compulsion to reach out, to touch Raven. To check heā€™s still solid and there, that he hasnā€™t been blown away on the currents of the wind like his namesake.
His hand reaches out, plucking the flower from Ravenā€™s face gently. The old man startles instantly, eyes snapping open and meeting Yuriā€™s as he flicks the blossom to the floor. Ravenā€™s eyes scan over him, looking for answers that heā€™s not sure heā€™ll find. Yuri certainly wouldnā€™t be able to explain if he were to ask. He simply looks between the sunken blue-green, carefully smoothing more fallen petals from Ravenā€™s shoulders.
ā€œFor what itā€™s worth,ā€ he says, voice practically a whisper beneath the howling of the breeze, far gentler than heā€™d expected it to be, ā€œI think I understand why your friend liked them.ā€
Ravenā€™s eyebrow cocks, ever so slightly.
ā€œYeah?ā€
ā€œYeah.ā€ he answers, lips quirking into a small smile, something genuine and raw and delicate that he doesnā€™t recall gracing his face before. ā€œTheyā€™ve got a certain charm, I suppose.ā€
Ravenā€™s breath hitches - he doesnā€™t hear it, only sees the narrowing of his nostrils, the bobbing of his Adam's apple. His eyes are so round, as the melancholy starts to subside slowly, leaving something inquisitive in his wake. Itā€™s an expression heā€™s sure heā€™s seen on Repede before when he was younger, still training, still struggling with learning to sit on command, and it feels strange to compare Raven to a puppy, but it certainly isnā€™t the strangest thing thatā€™s happened to him in the last 24 hours.
It feels like hours before Raven breaks his eyes away, anything raw and gentle immediately traded for bluster and jokes as he ducks his head.
ā€œWhatā€™re you doinā€™ hanginā€™ out with me amidst the flowers anyway?ā€ he asks, voice a little hoarse as his teasing lilt starts to creep back to him. ā€œThe others will start to talk if we keep havinā€™ these secret rendezvous, young man! How scandalous!ā€
He slaps his hand to his chest, feinting horror at their make-believe tryst. Yuri snorts, socking him lightly in the arm. Ridiculous as his jokes are, he canā€™t help but be pleased to see him return to some semblance of normalcy.
ā€œI came to get you for dinner, dumbass. After that, you can feel free to go on ahead to Nordopolica.ā€ he says, turning back around to lead the way to the others with a nod of his head.
Raven snickers at his own antics, hurrying to follow after him as he pulls a hurt expression.
ā€œWhat, you wanna get rid of me so soon?ā€
ā€œWrong.ā€ he snorts, head turned pointedly away in an effort to ignore his self-deprecating jokes. ā€œI just wouldn't want you to miss the new moon and your chance to deliver the letter all on our account.ā€
The beat of silence that follows is just a touch too long for their usual banter. He turns back to Raven, worried momentarily that heā€™s run off again and heā€™ll be on a wild goose chase for the rest of the night, only to find him following attentively behind him. Heā€™s looking at Yuri, expressionā€¦ totally indecipherable to him for once, actually. Itā€™s a rare occasion for him to have no idea what the old man is thinking.
ā€œWhat?ā€ he asks, eyebrow quirking. Raven simply smiles, wide and catlike.
ā€œOh, nothinā€™ important~ā€ he sing-songs, taking over the lead in the moment Yuri pauses. ā€œHonestly, I could do fine without your concern.ā€
Yuri scowls.
ā€œWrong again.ā€ he says, moving to keep pace, their back-and-forth continuing until they arrive back at the inn, and the campfire their party has set up.
(He never does figure out what Ravenā€™s expression had meant on that day, but when he finds the small laburnum branch tangled in his hair alongside the rhododendron the next morning, he quietly stows it away in the bottom of Karolā€™s bag, heart fluttering strangely in his chest)
-------------ā‡ø
The speed at which Mantaicā€™s locals manage to throw the party together is honestly quite astounding.
The stalls of the inn concourse have cleared their tables of their wares, already starting to accumulate piles of local cuisine - barely an hour since the news of the Flynn Brigadeā€™s arrival started to spread throughout the town, whispers abandoned in favour of joyous cries despite the extreme early hour, and already thereā€™s a feast to rival one for a noble. People of all ages are wide awake and gleeful, even very young children who donā€™t fully understand whatā€™s happening squealing with joy at seeing their parentsā€™ and older siblingsā€™ excitement.
The princess tries to help where she can (as always) - shakily carrying huge steaming pots to their directed positions, assisting in dragging tables out of homes to line the streets. Were Flynn not so busy tying up loose ends with the stragglers of the Cumore Brigade, Judithā€™s sure heā€™d be dancing around her like a mother hen. Instead, Karol and Rita have become his stand-ins, getting roped into helping themselves albeit minus Estelleā€™s unshakeable enthusiasm.
Sheā€™s glad everything turned out okay in the end. It had been with great unease that theyā€™d all drifted off to sleep the night before, distressed at their powerlessness, their lack of time. Battling with the princessā€™s impulsivity had been hard, especially in the presence of her big round eyes and quivering lips, but a necessary evil. There really wasnā€™t anything they couldā€™ve done. Judith remains firm in her belief - it would be impossible to rehabilitate a man like Cumore in jail. Even with the combined influence of Flynn and Estelle, the strength of their idealism and naĆÆvetĆ©, a man as corrupt as he would never conform to concepts like morals and ethics. He would only change in death.
The manā€™s fall from grace, while certainly better than allowing him to run amok, does little to satisfy her in all honesty. The townspeople, however, just seem glad to be free of his clutches, regardless of the flaws in the Empireā€™s justice system. She canā€™t blame them really - sheā€™s sure sheā€™d feel the same in their shoes, the ever-lingering threat of death by dehydration or being eaten alive finally lifted from their shoulders.
Sheā€™s glad for the lifting of the tense air that had settled over their travelling party the night before. That thereā€™s a smile on Estelleā€™s face again is good too. For the sake of the guild, nothing more , she scolds herself mentally, quashing the leap in her chest as the baby blues smile in her direction.
She finds herself counted as one of the old souls on this occasion; the small group who are extremely pleased for the turn of events and the freedom of the people, but are either too tired or consider themselves too uninvested to actually lend a hand. Raven is a regular to this group, fucked as his sleeping pattern is, and it doesn't surprise her as much as she thought it would that Patty too sits among them.
Yuri sitting back, however, is new.
Something is off with him. Something has been off with him sinceā€¦ well, certainly since their discovery of Cumore's little scheme. Heā€™s never been the most talkative of their group, a man of relatively few words until it comes to snide jibes and teasing, or else rallying speeches to raise morale or call outs for something he perceives to be an injustice.
(Sheā€™d say he was self-righteous - but then, by that same line of thinking, isnā€™t she also?)
His usual quietude has never felt like this though - dense and oppressive like thunderclouds, holding a tension that, if referred to, threatens to strike like lightning, harsh and quick and painful. Itā€™s possible heā€™d just slept badly, but she doubts it. She and Yuri are painfully alike at the best of times and in this, it seems, they continue to be.
Yes, for Yuri, the biggest champion of justice among them, to still be so tense, so incredibly on edgeā€¦ Itā€™s extremely telling.
The only one who seems to have noticed Yuriā€™s torment other than her (and his faithful pooch) is, of course, Raven. Itā€™s no surprise - heā€™s always kept a close eye on Yuri, in the time sheā€™s known them. Sheā€™d heard tell that the Don had taken an interest in Yuri when heā€™d met him, in a way usually foreign to him in regards to newcomers. Normally it would be years - years of hard work, of craft and contributions in the name of the guilds, for the man to so much as glance in your direction, let alone learn your name (understandably so for so busy and powerful a man). Yet Yuri had waltzed in and garnered his full attention in the space of a few hours, at best.
That Raven has clearly been instructed to stake him out, in addition to his apatheia hunt, feels natural. Less so is a good chunk of what he actually seems to be observing about Yuri - sheā€™s sure the Don would much rather see a report on his fighting capabilities, his disposition, the flexibility of his morality in a pinch, than whatever heā€™s gleaning by staring at his back when he takes his shirt off, or watching the flow of his hair in the desert breeze.
(That is, however, a report she would quite like to read, if for nothing more than watching the burn of Ravenā€™s ears at the request)
This morning, however, the eye he keeps on him is careful. Though the ever-present catlike smirk that plays over his lips remains, thereā€™s something considering to his gaze - a scheme in the works but not those of his usual calibre. Nothing designed to rile Rita, fluster Estelle or make the kids laugh (though sheā€™s sure if he can tie his usual goals into whatever heā€™s concocting then he certainly wonā€™t shy away at the chance).
If she had to guess at his intentions, sheā€™d have thought--
The blaring of a horn throws her suddenly from her train of thought - the celebrations are brought instantly into full swing by a makeshift band of passing guildsmen throwing their own contributions into the mix. Judith doesnā€™t consider herself a big listener of music, in all honesty, but sheā€™d be hard pressed not to recognise the juxtaposed staccatos and legatos characteristic of Dahngrestian swing - while lesser known within Empire towns like this one, the style is famous the world over.
She hasnā€™t had many opportunities to join in with the festivities the guilds are known for throwing, where dancers step and twirl faster than the barkeeps can pour drinks (and really, isnā€™t that an impressive thought, considering the drinking culture in Dahngrest?) Sheā€™s bore witness to their local dancing customs only once or twice, and never within the heart of the city itself, and she knows with certainty that while her footwork on the battlefield might be immaculate, she has two left feet for dancing - would certainly never dare to attempt swing. She has great sympathy for the townsfolk who, while enraptured by the melody, feet tapping along jovially, seem as though they donā€™t know quite what to do with it.
Altoskā€™s second, on the other hand, is ecstatic. He barks a delighted laugh that startles Patty, almost jostling her from the table sheā€™s perched upon, and finally momentarily draws Yuri from his reverie. She watches, amused, as he throws Yuriā€™s grumpy, inquisitive look a wink before springing to his feet.
ā€œHey, kid!ā€ he calls, flagging Karol down as he heads to the middle of the concourse. Their illustrious guild master looks up from the mabo curry bun heā€™s attempting to swallow whole, wide-eyed. Raven grins, crooked and gummy in a way sheā€™s come to associate with his mischief.
ā€œWhy donā€™t we show these lovely folks how itā€™s done, as thanks for their hospitality?ā€
Karol is practically vibrating at the concept. In a flash heā€™s pulling off his gloves and whipping his bag over his head, dumping the pile in Ritaā€™s lap (eliciting, of course, an incredibly over the top yelp of annoyance). He scarfs down the remnants of the bun as he hops over the table heā€™s sat at, scampering over to Raven in a manner that does nothing to hide his enthusiasm.
ā€œYou better not stand all over my feet, Raven!ā€ he calls as he draws closer, face pulling into a pout that doesnā€™t quite ring true. The noise Raven makes in response is rather like that of a strangled cat.
ā€œThe nerve oā€™ kids these days!ā€ he bemoans, pinching his sinuses with a shake of his head. ā€œIā€™ll have you know yours truly is the pride of Altosk! Ya wonā€™t find a better dancer in all oā€™ Dahngrest, not even the Don himself!ā€
ā€œUhu, suuuure. ā€ Karol drawls, disbelieving, as he comes to a stop by his side.
Itā€™s as he does that Raven ducks his head close to the boy, hand a shield to cover whatever he says. His words are inaudible, but if Karolā€™s terrible attempts at hiding his furtive glances in Yuriā€™s direction are anything to go by, Judith would have to guess itā€™s something about whatever Ravenā€™s scheming for Brave Vesperiaā€™s second.
The band seems to catch wind of their plans, slowing the jaunty tune down to allow the two to begin. Karol dusts his hands off on his trousers bashfully, ridding himself of any remnants of curry, before taking Ravenā€™s hand in his. Their movements start off slow and creeping, almost unnatural to watch, but it quickly becomes apparent to her that theyā€™re motions meant to teach rather than for actual dancing - an enunciated display of footwork for the surrounding beginners as they take their time to get a feel for each other as dance partners.
And then, Raven taking Karolā€™s waist, they begin in earnest. Movements still slow, but now fluid as water, they begin to turn around one another in the style she vaguely recognises, and while she knows nothing about dancing, itā€™s clear that theyā€™re extremely good. They match each other's timing perfectly, not a step out of place, and she could believe they were gliding if not for the dust their footsteps kick up.
Karol is good, of course, especially for a kid of his age (she wonders idly if he mightā€™ve had a brief foray in a dancing guild, prior to joining the Hunting Blades), but Raven is really something else. Sheā€™s never seen a man able to move his hips in such a way, sashaying in a way thatā€™s frankly a little hypnotising - if she thought he were truly interested in her, then thisā€™d definitely be enough to make her begin to consider his earlier flirtations more seriously. Itā€™s frankly criminal, she thinks, that his trousers and jacket do so much to obscure his ass.
As they become more comfortable, they begin to ramp it up a little - they take it in turns to twirl one another, alternating between wide sweeping arcs, Raven displaying his extreme flexibility to twist beneath Karolā€™s arm, to fast tight twirls that almost remind her of Ritaā€™s casting motions. For these, Karol spins so quickly sheā€™s surprised he doesnā€™t completely lose balance and land face first in the dirt. Instead he simply laughs jovially, really getting into the spirit of it and losing himself to the music. Ravenā€™s responding smile is fond, like a father watching their kid, and she could almost believe theyā€™ve both forgotten about their ulterior motives, if not for how Raven keeps glancing in their direction every other time heā€™s facing their way.
Itā€™s as Estelle drags Rita out to join them, accompanied by a group of the locals, that Judy feels something ugly snare her heart and promptly takes the opportunity to cast a considering glance instead to Patty and Yuri. The smaller is bouncing where she sits, gleefully watching the dancers - she seems antsy to join in, if only she could find a spare partner who wouldnā€™t accidentally crush her.
Yuri surprises her - while he might not be completely out of his funk, heā€™s watching more attentively than she previously expected. She gazes at him curiously for a while as he leans his head on his hand, watching the Dahngrestian pairā€™s increasing frenzy. Karolā€™s giggles are near constant, and Ravenā€™s been infected by his happiness, laughing obnoxiously himself. The creases of Yuriā€™s eyes tighten, even as the rest of his face fails to emote, as his eyes seem to lock on Ravenā€™s face and stay there. She smiles.
ā€œAhem.ā€ she coughs, sharp and decidedly fake. Yuri and Patty both are startled away from the party, turning to her. She raises her eyebrows pointedly at the former, coy smirk rising to her lips. His eyes widen in response, as Patty turns confusedly to look at him, before he flusters, turning away from the party entirely. She laughs.
Itā€™s at that moment that Karol comes spinning towards them, hand freed from Ravenā€™s grasp at last. His smile is blinding, and heā€™s struggling to catch his breath, but he still seems to be full of energy as Raven follows behind him.
ā€œPatty, you probably know a bit of swing, right?ā€ he asks her, real question thinly veiled by his proffered hand.
Sheā€™s a clever lass, though. ā€œHah! Of course I do, matey!ā€ she declares, grabbing it firmly and pulling him back out into the street.
Raven watches them go fondly, before turning to her. With a flourish, he bows to her, graceful as a knight but with none of the prim and proper charm.
ā€œJudy, my darlinā€™, could I convince ya to honour olā€™ Raven with a dance?ā€
His eyes never leave hers as he asks, gaze sharp and lacking all pretense of genuine flirting.
Ah, so thatā€™s his game is it?
ā€œOh no, I couldnā€™t possibly!ā€ she declares exaggeratedly, hand to her chest. ā€œNot when Yuri so clearly wants to instead!ā€
The effect is instant. She barely has time to note the twitch of Yuriā€™s ears at the sound of his name before his head whips around to look at them.
ā€œHu- what?ā€
Raven springs back upright, throwing his hand up to clutch at his own chest.
ā€œYuri, darlinā€™, if you wanted to dance with me then all you had to do was say so! No need to make Judy do all yer dirty work for ya!ā€
He closes the gap between them in a matter of steps, as Yuriā€™s face grows more panicked by the second.
ā€œWh-- no, what?! Judy, no, I canā€™t dance , JU--!!ā€
She smiles as Raven takes him by the hand and tugs him away. Yuriā€™s expression reminds her of a bunwigle, caught unaware in the middle of the night, backed into a corner with no escape. Itā€™s incredibly endearing, and certainly a nice change from the faux-apathy heā€™s been stewing in.
As they move away she watches as Ravenā€™s expression transforms from mischievous to something more careful, considerate. He doesnā€™t guide Yuri to the middle of the crowd as sheā€™d expected, where their friends spin with reckless abandon, but instead to a quieter area of the dancing space. Yuri seems just as confused as she feels, more than likely expecting Raven to have humiliated him with his lack of skill. Theyā€™re far enough away that whatever the older man says to reassure him is lost to her, but he smiles and takes Yuriā€™s hands gently.
Her heart swells at the careful way Raven teaches him, easily pulls him out of his darker thoughts and concentrates his mind on something else. Yuri doesnā€™t strike her as the sort to let himself be taken care of, but she doubts he even realises thatā€™s whatā€™s happening - probably sees it instead as some sort of challenge. Itā€™s nice. She might not have known him long, but she feels close to him in a way she hasnā€™t felt with another person forā€¦ a good ten years, sheā€™d wager. Sheā€™d forgotten what it felt like, to see good things happen to someone you care about.
He trips over Ravenā€™s feet often, but Raven doesnā€™t let him get self-conscious about it - instead exaggeratedly pretending to trip himself in a way that allows Yuri to chip in and tease him. When thereā€™s one failed attempt too many and Yuri attempts to break away, he simply pulls him back in, closer, and looks him in the eyes.
(She feels a little bad for still watching, personal and intimate as the moment is becoming, but itā€™s hard to find anything else interesting at this point)
ā€œWhat is it I always say when Iā€™m fightinā€™, Yuri?ā€ she can just about hear the old man say over the wail of the trombone.
Yuriā€™s tone is monotonous, even as his face starts to rise into an affectionate smirk.
ā€œā€˜Ooo, eee, ow, my back hurts?ā€™ā€ he says, quirked eyebrow a dead giveaway for his bullying. He receives a light slap to his arm for his trouble that leaves him laughing openly in a way sheā€¦ hasnā€™t actually seen from him in the time sheā€™s known him.
Huh.
ā€œThat itā€™s just like dancinā€™, ya dolt!ā€ he says. He laces their fingers carefully before starting to move once more through the basic steps. ā€œYouā€™ll see what I mean before long.ā€
After a few more failed attempts, Yuri finally starts to figure it out. He still steps on Ravenā€™s toes more often than not, but itā€™s to be expected for a newbie in the face of a dance as rapid as swing - sheā€™s quite impressed at how fast heā€™s picked it up in all honesty. Heā€™s already doing a damned sight better than Rita, whose motions are still awkward and stiff as sheā€™s twirled by Estelle (though she looks to be having the time of her life, in spite of it).
They look very sweet together, in all honesty. Itā€™s the most sheā€™s seen either of them relax in front of other people - Yuriā€™s snark is quickly abandoned as he starts to really get into the swing of it, and most of Ravenā€™s jokes and teasing go along with it. Theyā€™re just a couple of normal guys in their own little world, dancing together beneath the rising sun, looking genuinely happy for once. Watching them laughing together, she finds her own spirits raised too, even as she continues to sit to one side like a wallflower.
And sheā€™s glad she did. If she hadnā€™t, sheā€™d have missed out on this potentially one-time-only sight of Yuriā€™s carefree smile. Wouldā€™ve never seen the sudden change in Yuriā€™s demeanor as he looks up at Raven mid-spin, eyes widening, before his expression becomes suddenly raw.
Heā€™s not watching his feet at all any more - heā€™s just going with the flow, and reading Ravenā€™s movements and theyā€™re incredibly in sync to say Yuri has all of 10 minutes of experience. Itā€™s strange to think it, but he seems to be having fun , doing something other than fighting, even despite his mess ups.Ā  Yuriā€™s uncharacteristically crooked smile, as his eyes never leave Ravenā€™s, is blindingly beautiful, and piques her curiosity.
Before today, when sheā€™d seen the admiring glances the Raven had sent his way, sheā€™d have thought he was barking up the completely wrong tree. Now though (although she doubts Yuriā€™s realised the way heā€™s starting to look at the old man) sheā€™s really not so sure.
Then the moment is gone.
Behind her, she hears him. Flynn, barking orders to his brigade, accompanied by the protests of the now-bound followers of Cumore. And in that exact instant, Yuri stops stock-still. Raven goes crashing into him, frantically apologising and trying to check heā€™s okay, but itā€™s as though he isnā€™t there. Yuri just stares past her to Flynn, eyes wide and unseeing butā€¦ terrified , if she had to take a guess.
She can hear Raven call to him as he slips his hands free from his grip, and he looks up glancingly. He mutters something, what she can only imagine is some excuse, or a few words of apology, before heā€™s stalking off towards the inn and shutting the door behind him briskly.
Raven, standing alone and off to one side, looks very small in that instant. Like he doesnā€™t know quite where he went wrong, what he couldā€™ve possibly done differently.
Perhaps, just this once, she can take pity on him. After all, if thereā€™s anyone who can fix her left feetā€¦
Standing and smoothing down her skirts, she heads over to him, taking his hand, and he startles. His big blue eyes look up at her, puppy-like, and itā€™s like Estelle the night before all over again. She sighs, already regretting her question before she asks.
ā€œIs the offer still open?ā€
He smiles. Solemn. But itā€™s a start.
