I just find Wakaba really fascinating in the terms of how the narrative evolves around her. She stays the same while everything around her changes, she wants to become special and important to the story and then...never gets that. She gets into the car with Akio but we don't see Anything. She's not important enough to be given that spotlight, or to see how that could have affected her. She seems surface level happy and then that's it. We don't get to know because the narrative is completely uninterested in her emotional and personal development and character.

She gets the one episode, goes back to how it was before, and then doesn't appear much in that later half even though she was important in the Student Council Arc for Utena's personal development. And even that you can view that as her acting only in service to the main characters. After that and Black Rose she appears mainly to push Utena further into the sexist nightmare of Othori Academy.

And then she forgets everything.

The most change happening to her afterwards is her repeating Utena's role. She does not get a role of her own because she's the understudy to Utena's role. The narrative is a leering man that has no interest in her as a person but also doesn't want her to leave it's sight. Horrifying. 10/10. Wakaba I love you.

I wonder if the reason Cheth doesn't have Shoshana's soul to summon as sea ghost is that, either due to her "half breed" status, as Cheline so kindly put it, or to her having been "loved into immortality", is that her soul went wherever the souls of the dead gods are (If the dead gods have souls at all, that is)

...If we can trust Cheline's word, I wonder if two of the reasons she hates Shoshana so much are that

1) Shoshana helped with the deicide, also against whoever her divine parent actually was

2) She got to be remembered, whereas the other deities have been wiped from memory save in phrases such as "gods above and below", although their names aren't in use anymore

.....How much of the villainization of Cheth is Cheline comitting crimes in his name, and how much is human revisionism (Cheline would never betray them, after all)

...How the FUCK are the clergy rationalizing that the AQUIfers (with water being Cheth's domain) help with seabite. How. (Also how the fuck are the seabitten supposed to trust the aquifers if they're supposed to fear water.) (....Graduation requirement: be so afraid of water you won't even touch the aquifers)

There's more thoughts about how Vanna is currently apparently alive and the Fata Morgana are corpses puppeteered by Cheline and likely killed by her and the reason they're silent is because she fucking hates talking to humans and they're her way of relieving stress, but I can't formulate them out of the pudding that is my brain rn

GOD I LOOVE how you draw Eclipse with googly eyes it makes me cackle every time. Also loved that comic where the Vigilante spawns in the window b/c everyone was bullying Eclipse that was so funny 😭😂

so many funny googly expressions! and, well....

I love doing the googly eyes!! Given that I keep their smiles permanent, the eyes are the main expressive feature, and so much fun to exaggerate - gets his emotions really across!

Vigilante's appearance and thus acknowledgement of their existence really was just so they could join in on the bullying and I love that for them fhdjsk Before I was hesitant because Eclipse in canon still has that unhealthy obsession with them and I had no clue how to work menace4menace into that ("They're mine and they're deadly" vs "I found this squeaky toy of a cat and he's mine now") but y'know, joke needed a third person and who'd be better than them? <3

Miles is the "Eeugh there's a bug kill it" or "Oh fuck that's creepy gotta get the boyfriend" kinda guy in the relationship

And Ganke is the "Oh, it's a bug. Let's admire it and put it outside gently." Kinda guy in the relationship. Maybe he thinks a lot about the poem about the crime of being small, and hey, he already loves bugs, so of course he's going to treat them with kindness. Miles gives him a disgusted look though when he sees him handling them. He's not a fan...

Ganke's like "We have no right to kill them just because they're right there. This is their space, their world. They're just kind enough to share it with us." (And the instrumental of Need 2 by Pinegrove is just playing in the background as the sun shines on him)

And Miles just side-eyes him and goes "Okay babe you're all wise and deep now will you please take care of the moth that's up in my bed it keeps flying at me and freaking me out."

Vashwood thematically feels like two starts orbiting each other very closely, while Vashmeryl is like a planet naturally orbiting a start or large force of mass. Like they both are about two people revolving around each

i see u and if u dont mind me pulling off this to make it much more essay-ish than it needs to be,

for me it feels like vash has 2 sides to his character and both wolfwood n meryl are there to understand each of those sides

wolfwood relates to and resonates w his more "monstrous" side, theyve both seen hell and come out with completely different views but despite that they still are probably the only two who really Get eachother for that, just feeling too big for your skin and that theyr only deserving of loneliness, but they find eachother and they click because they fit more in with the monstrous, evil, barely human people of nomans land who want to see it burn and theyr always pulling themselves from comfort and happiness because they feel they dont deserve it and they need to atone for the people who Made them, but they find it in eachother whether they mean to or not until the very end. they even became so enamoured with eachother that when wolfwood died, in a sense, he joins rem in vash's head as someone to fight for and someone who shapes his reasoning, he only kills legato to save livio because wolfwood died for livio, just like how rem died to save everyone so then anyone dying would be a waste of her death

for meryl she sees herself in the more human side of vash, despite all hes been through he still smiles like its nothing and she knows damn well thats not normal and hes hiding his pain because hes still a person. when vash kills legato he breaks down completely she holds his head in her lap and thinks about how she did the same when she first killed someone because its such a human reaction, something the people of nomans land seem to have forgotten. theyr horribly terrified to get close to eachother because she knows hes not human, she knows what hes capable of and shes absolutely got issues herself with being emotionally closed off and for vash we know he punishes himself by not allowing himself simple comforts as well as the fact he knows hes a danger to those around him but theres still a person in there and meryl sees it and vash knows she does and is so relieved that Someone does but theyr both too traumatised to get close but by the end of the manga we start to see them perhaps warming up to the idea of being closer

you can even expand further on this with wolfwood's status as a victim of the narritive by watching how all the gungho guns are picked off one by one (besides livio) including knives and wolfwood because thats vash's whole reason for not just giving up and living a quiet human life as eriks, wolfwood (and knives, and the rest of the gungho huns) dying can be read as vash losing his need to be a monster, and while it pains him to see his partner and brother die its like that inhuman part of him - or the need to use it - dying too, which can also be seen in his hair turning black, and whos still there by the end when his hairs fully black and theres no threat forcing him to be a monstrous angelic saviour to the world? meryl - his humanity. we dont really see much of him living as human (such as allowing himself to grieve, recover, love, eat, sleep, form bonds, laugh, smile, be happy) before the series ends but i love that it lets us fill in the blanks

anyway uhh TL;DR wolfwood brings understanding and comfort in vash's inhumanity and meryl reminds him of and encourages his humanity

I think I did read that worm post a couple days ago (and it's a very good worm post) but it's not what inspired my own worm post, I've been working on that for a while. There's an older sketchbook version here, which I made after working in my garden, digging up a bunch of worms, and remembering that old myth about how worms will survive splitting in two, which in turn inspired a whole research spree (biology is fun). It's a good concept for art though, I'm not surprised it's floating around (though I'm somewhat surprised these myths are so widespread? For reference, I live in the Netherlands, and I remember hearing about it as a kid too).

Bonus fun fact: that research spree lead to finding out about Dugesia japonica, which is a species of flatworm/planarian which can't just survive splitting in two, it can regenerate its head including memories. (paywalled Nature article though you can read the abstract, less detailed but free Smithsonian article). Still working out on how to turn that into an art piece so for now I'm just going to nerd about it :)
