hey btw if you're in the USA at  2:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Oct. 4, they're testing the emergency broadcast system. your phone is probably going to make a really loud noise, even if it's on silent. there's a backup date on the 11th if they need to postpone it.

if you're not in a safe situation and have an extra phone, you should turn that phone completely off beforehand.

additionally, if you're like me, and are easily startled; i recommend treating it like a party. have a countdown or something. be surrounded by your loved ones. take the actions you personally need to take to make yourself safe.

i have already seen mockery towards any person who feels nervous about this. for the record, it completely, completely valid to have "emergency broadcast sounds" be an anxiety trigger. do not let other people make fun of you for that. emergency sounds are legitimately engineered to make us take action; those of us with high levels of anxiety and/or neurodivergence are already pre-disposed to have a Bad Time. sometimes it is best to acknowledge that the situation will be triggering for some, and to prepare for that; rather than just saying "well that's stupid, it's just a test."

"loud scary sound time" isn't like, my favorite thing, but we can at least try to prevent some additional anxiety by preparing for it. maybe get yourself a cake? noise cancelling headphones? the new hozier album? whatever helps. love u, hope you're okay. we are gonna ride it out together.

One thing I wish I'd see more of among Ratio fans is some thought about how he views himself as a teacher.

Like yes, of course he refuses to compromise on the quality and rigor of the education he imparts, and he would find it unforgivably unethical to lower his standards in order to pass more students who had not genuinely learned the material. This is core to his character.

However, as someone who is a teacher IRL, I know the absolutely miserable feeling setting that kind of standard can cause. There's the obvious disheartening sense of disappointment ("Are students these days really not capable of doing the work correctly? Is our future in danger, if this is the highest level of understanding our current generation of students can achieve?"), but even worse than that is the self-doubt.

"Is this somehow my fault? Am I not teaching this material in the right ways for the students to learn? Is there something I could have done differently to get through to these students? Would a better teacher have a higher passing rate?"

We know that Ratio does (or at least did) struggle with feeling inferior to the Genius Society, so I think it is also likely, as much as he absolutely will not budge on his academic standards, that he has doubts about his teaching ability as well.

This is the man who wants to educate the entire world to cure the disease of ignorance, and yet only 3% of his actual students are able to get there. How can someone who gets so few of his direct students to a state of enlightenment hope to enlighten the whole universe? If so few students are successfully learning the material of a given class, doesn't that mean the teacher is doing something wrong?Would a better teacher--would a genius, maybe--not be able to impart their knowledge more efficiently and educate even the most challenging of students?

As someone constantly struggling with that balance between keeping academic standards high while also meeting the needs of today's students, I think the passing rates of his courses must affect Dr. Ratio much more deeply than I've seen fans discuss. I think he would question himself harshly over his class success rates, and I think he must be constantly trying to push himself to become the best teacher he possibly can be.

tl;dr: I hope one day the HSR fandom will stop sleeping on the fact that Ratio is an actual practicing professor who probably has astronomical levels of teacher angst. 😂

it's actually so sad seeing how islamophobia is still so rampant in america. i'm the president of the muslim student association on campus and today a hijabi girl came in and told me about a situation where she was religiously and racially targeted by a PROFESSOR. and the worst part wasn't just the targeting, but it was the fact that she said she was so scared to speak up and tell anyone about it because she was afraid that no one would believe her or do anything about it for her.

we as muslims in america are always told to just put our heads down and take it. it hurts to see how we're told to handle abuse and islamophobia by ourselves and not reach out for help. we're tired of tolerating abuse and hatred for no reason other than pure ignorance. white americans please educate yourselves for the love of god.

i feel that light cant forge deeper, more sincere relationships/bonds with people that dont match his freak um i mean. his intelligence and mental level. he meets L and is surprised to find someone he can finally understand and who can finally understand him - almost like this is his first and/or only chance at a meaningful relationship with another person - but he is, like many that grew up 'gifted', unused to having any competition for being at the top, so L is just as threatening as he is enticing. L is similarly unused to competition! He is the world's THREE best detectives!!

But they are just as much rivals, threats to each other, as they are reliant on each other for human connection and mental stimulation... tl;dr this is one way out of many that they totally match eachothers freak trust

Lolol sometimes it’s so funny reading peoples posts about “Mormon” theology that is based on Exmo stories, tradition/culture but not doctrine, and like random statements by some church leader 200 years ago that was not put into doctrine/canonized, or that he was corrected/reprimanded on, and all of us look back on like “well that guy was racist/sexist. Anyways moving on…” like tbh it just makes me laugh. breaking my silence on chess the musical to say that i would literally not give a fuck about this show if i thought it was good or fully successful at what it is saying. SORRY! i love how messy she is. i love how since 1984 and continuing to this very day people with entirely different perceptions of and opinions on the musical have attempted in their own ways to "make it good" by creating all these different versions with like notably different plots, characterization, and song order, and i love how fucking bad the vast majority of these are despite it all. i hope people keep trying to fix chess the musical forever and until the end of time. i hope no one ever figures it out. i want every currently living theatre director in existence to make their own version and for all these versions to come out on broadway at the same time, making that year's musical season entirely comprised of various different versions of the cold war chess musical by tim rice and half of abba. i want not only our greatest minds but also our middlest-of-the-road and worst minds to come up with their own conclusions as to why chess does not entirely work in its original form or any subsequent forms like to really think about it and yes i do want someone to dedicate their entire life to perfecting chess by releasing version after version after version until they die peacefully but still, as always, in the grips of obsession. i want marriages to be broken up. i want mental states to be shattered. i dream of this world

I don’t think Juno is one to open a halfway house or anything like that, but I get this feeling that his office will become something like that after the finale.

Like all the kids and young adults in new town (or anywhere else honestly) who need help and places to stay and have lives to rebuild all coming to his office at odd hours of the night only for Juno to find them passed out in front of door, let them in, and give them a guide on how to reset their life.

He has regular students coming in after school for help on how to get money and he helps them with jobs and scholarships and little tips he’d learned. There are people he only sees once and people he’s seen three or five times before but he still helps them because they’re trying.

It starts so slow at first, but eventually there’s as many kids as cases and he has to hire another secretary to help keep the kids organized and work out the logistics. Even though he does that, he still talks to the kids by himself, every one of them, and Detective Steel becomes a common name in new town if you need help, investigative or getting your life on track.

There is currently a rather large discussion ongoing about the RW fandom behavior, drama, etc. I am not going to talk about the specifics of whats happened for a number of reasons. But what I do want to say is that if at any point you've harassed people over it, whether that be through anon asks or public posts- you did nothing but damage the ability for people to correctly process what is happening. You contributed nothing but harm to an already delicate situation. It does not matter what "side" you were on and I will not tolerate further interaction with me or my work if I found out you did such. If you let your personal hate for anyone boil over into threats, wishes for long term harm and petty comments meant to contribute nothing but slander or mental distress for the individuals involved who were already distressed (or acting irrationally) you did nothing but make it harder for people to process their emotions, thoughts and behaviors constructively. Regardless of who you think was in the right, who fucked up, whatever. It doesn't matter if they deserved it, or earned it, or if its an eye for an eye. Its difficult enough as it is to think clearly when presented with any kind of stressful situation and heckling people does nothing but make it worse and harder for them to explain themself in any capacity. I don't want you anywhere near me if you think that is an acceptable way to act.

~Fishy Comic Update~

I’ve learned that my characters, lore, and world building are going to continue being used for a collaboration that I am no longer apart of, even though these things are extremely personal to me, and are well known and have been stated to be very personal to me many times.

Over the last month, I was removed from the project without the ability to communicate or improve on any of the reasons as to why. It deeply hurt me, and though I wished things could be different, I understand it won’t be, but I also thought that with my removal from the collaboration, that my characters, world, and lore around it would be as well. Out of the respect and knowledge that my connection to these characters are very deep, I thought my inability to provide input on their inclusion would result in it’s inclusion being removed as well, or at least wrapped up immediately.

I am hurt and uninterested in continuing this story. It’s been tainted by the talks happening behind the scenes both to me and not with me in the discussion. Now that these characters, settings, and lore, all things explicitly said to be based around my life many times, are still being used, I feel the need to state I am not comfortable seeing this happen. I don’t feel comfortable maintaining silence as if I am comfortable with this continued usage, so I want to be clear that this is not my writing, and this is NOT my choice. I did not get one in the matter.

lmao sorry to everyone in my inbox, this month has been a mess and I'm just not really around enough for it. someone in my immediate family got a new cancer diagnosis, my not-art job got restructured because management is a joke and it's been.... not great, to be honest! to top it off, my mom's cousin just died because the major hospital didn't have enough beds open for the provincial hospital to transfer him. etc etc etc.

anyway. it's been a lot and I'm Very Tired Of Things Happening 🙃
