okay. I’m still stuck on these roran chapters so let’s make predictions about the fate of the characters.
Roran gets his happy ending. I don’t see him, his unborn kid, or Katrina dying. Maybe Carn dies though, which makes me sad because I like him.
Arya becomes a rider. Maybe she becomes queen? Her mom is definitely dying tho.
Nasuada becomes queen of Alagaësia, and hopefully rides off into the sunset with Murtagh
I think Murtagh and Thorn are gonna travel alone to atone for their past, kinda like Sasuke
Eragon and by extension Saphira leave Alagaësia, for some reason

Who do you think Nasuada will make her king? She needs heirs, right? The obvious choice is Murtagh but the kingdom won't agree much (I think). Can't wait to hear your opinion.
I’m going to jump into the difficult version of this answer, because why not (this is getting long in my head but I’m going to try and sum it up (we all know I’m terrible at that))
Okay so I was planning on making this a separate post, but this question came in handy and I’m going to mix both subjects, I hope you don’t mind anon!
I was reading the other day this magnificent spn fanfic called “It started with a fanfic competition” (on ao3), and I bumped into this page and quotes
Tumblr media
Excuse my terrible highlighting, I’m so clumsy with phones
Ignore that maybe you don’t know who any of the characters are, but that it involves two people talking about how a War Hero was the one people wanted to be the ruler, and how they both agree that who would want that?
I couldn’t help but finding myself immediately brought back to the IC and all the struggle we saw Eragon having all over the last books regarding whether he should be king or not, and that he himself decided that was not for him, and Nasuada ending up taking the throne. I found it very interesting how CP’s great course of thought was found normal for other people.
Now, that Nasuada accepted the throne when she was as well a War Hero even gives her more credit from this point of view, seen how not just Eragon (and therefore Chris) but also other people could see how after fighting in a war, having the responsibility of a whole country on your hands might not be something one want to step into. But she did (cuz she’s amazing).
One of the reasons Eragon thought he wouldn’t be good for ruling was that Galby had ruled for so long in Alagaësia because he was immortal and therefore didn’t die of age when most ruler’s time should be over, and that replacing him for someone of the same conditions wouldn’t be good for the country. “No one should rule for that long”, or something similar was quoted, which I think is a very important fact, and that gives Eragon so much credit on his side too.
Now, regarding your question, Murtagh would also be found on that group of never-dying people, and maybe that would be a drawback in making him be the Queen’s consort (King is fine for me, but I believe in royalty the King is meant to have more power than the Queen (why for though *face palm*), so I read it more than once how they are never called “King” when someone gets married to the Queen, for the power to stay with her).
That being said, it’s true that when Nasuada passed away, if he was just the King/Consort all the power would move to their heir, so that might not be a problem eventually, as long as Murtagh wouldn’t go full-tyrant mode, which I think he wouldn’t. I repeat, he wouldn’t. And I think I know that almost for sure, and you all know that, after all he went through, but I’m not sure Murtagh knows it.
What I mean is Murtagh at this point (and as long as CP doesn’t continue the story), is hurt and broken, and all he wants is to be alone and have some time to himself to find out who he really is outside everyone’s manipulation. But when he is able to return and feel better about himself, if he was asked to be King, I’m not sure he would accept, for fear that he would one day turn into something he hated because of it. It even occurs to me that he might be afraid that spending all that time next to Nasuada sharing a country with her to then watch her die might be so painful for him that he fears to even get close to that situation.
All of this and I haven’t even touched the issue of whether the country would accept him or not. Nothing would make me happier than the people acknowledging him as a good man and therefore accepting himself as one too. I’ve said it other times before that I think he could earn that love, but climbing into power like that might not be the best way to start. I think he needs to feel like he can help the country in other ways before stepping to Nasuada’s side, and that might very well be years after the ending of the IC.
So, from that point of view, No, I think Murtagh wouldn’t be king, at least for a very long time, maybe more than the necessary to provide a heir. He would be with Nasuada, be her friend, even her lover (please), but having that position is not something I see him into. Helping Eragon with the Riders is something I think he needs to be involved with first, for example.
Ignoring all of this, there’s the fact that maybe Murtagh doesn’t want kids, which seems kind of accurate for me (not that I like it). Maybe not even Nasuada wants them.
HA. This leaves us with a country with a mortal Queen and her best friend with no heirs, and no future.
Which gets me to the question: if Nasuada doesn’t want kids, would she have them just for the sake of the country? And should she?
The answer to the first question for me is yes. This is Nasuada, an absolutely selfless person who would do whatever it takes to ensure the safety of her country.
But the second question… maybe not? All of Nasuada’s story is a statement of how the importance of a person doesn’t lie on her gender or skin color. Just by stepping into the throne she’s defying all the rules, and being damn good badass at it. So with a person like this, who says she wouldn’t change all the rules again and just pick the right heir even if it’s not someone of her own blood?
I can picture Nasuada just fine raising a war-orphan child that bumps into her and making that child into the most clever and kind and loyal person as a mirror and a child of her own. And I really like this idea, because it’s Nausada, so why not?
She can make her own rules. She can love Murtagh (or any other man, but well I’m not even thinking about that because I’m so Nasurtagh trash) and be with him without throwing much responsibility on him at first and make the world be okay with it, or they can suck it up. She can have kids with him if she wants. And she can choose her own heir knowing it would be the best choice for the country, and I’m okay with that.
This waaaas a mess, as always, I hope I answered your question at least a bit. Let me hear your thoughts!
