I just realized I never pushed my Kingdom Hearts MAP here and I wanna get it done so…
youtube
So if this is your first time ever seeing a MAP let me give you a definition. A MAP is a Multi Animator Project. To put it simply it’s just a giant collaboration between artists, generally to make an animated music video.
I wasn’t sure I’d be able to find enough animators when I made the MAP though so this project is single frame PMV (Picture Music Video). The only movement necessary is camera panning (which I can help with if needed) and/or tweening. So basically it’d just be a single art piece.
Interested in being a part of the project? Comment on the video or message me here or through the Discord asking for the part/parts you want!
The MAP is scripted so please read the document below before applying
This MAP will cover the events of the entire franchise up to Melody of Memories (except Coded) so spoiler warning for the script
Script and Rules: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bjwOWF29cabUr2f3MkGbNYfYmiOa2qShJI_0JZEjszY
We have a Discord (not mandatory but appreciated): https://discord.gg/KzqDdBDF

Season 2 Ramble#1 - New Year New Worlds
This month's episode is about the isekai genre, isekai literally being a Japanese word that basically translates to "different world". Very self descriptive as what generally happens in these stories is someone gets sent to/from some other world.
Gotta be upfront right off the bat here and say that before this month I was never really a big fan of the genre, for a couple reasons I'll get into later. So heading into January I thought I'd be forcing myself through reads but I was pleasantly surprised at the number of things I liked and how much I found myself liking them.
Lastly before getting into it, for the most part I read stuff on manga4life.com, especially stuff that's not in any official app
top 5 Isekai read this month:
#5 Overlord (Original light novel by Kugane Maruyama with Fugin Miyama doing the Story & Art for the manga) [read 41/71 chapters | ongoing]
The story here is that a popular virtual reality game is closing down and the main character decides to stay logged in until the very last second, but after the scheduled time has passed, the mc finds he hasn't been and can't log out.
Tumblr media
NPCS really coming to life is always cool, and in overlord after the mc did some investigating he realized he's not actually in the game, he's in a whole new world. It's got pretty neat characters and nice strong character designs.
It's been sort of predictable.. unless… something ever turns out poorly for the main character or something…. but I'm gonna add a grain of salt here and restate that I'm not up to date + buildup is something I can appreciate.. and tbh despite how OFTEN games are used as the gateway to some "other world, it will probably never get old for me,, but execution is key.. and so far overlord is just about average..
#4 latna saga: survival of a sword king (Gyeong-Bae Im did the Original Light novel Story while Sun-Gyu Gwon does the Story & Art in the manhwa/webtoon) [read 81/153 chapters | hiatus]
The MC just finished mandatory military service but hasn't been able to find the drive to do anything and so becomes a shut in. This ramble is all Isekai so as you can guess, he's inexplicably transported to another world and made to kill monsters and level up like a game, with the promise of a safe trip home if he completes his quests. He's even given a guide that tells him what level things are, identifies items and gives him a tutorial, but the catch is his guide has a glitch that trapped him in the tutorial for somewhere around 20 years..
Pros, he got strong as shit. Cons he's stuck at level 5 but nothing gives him enough experience to level up anymore.
A bit of a spoiler but the first thing I'd like to say is how much I loved the plot point that coming from another world was not welcomed by the residents. Not at all a fan of xenophobia but that sort of preset aggro situation tends to and did make for fun high paced kicks, with some nice hijinks sprinkled in.
Also the title and first few chapters led me to believe this would be a darker read but comedy was definitely it's strong point... 20+ years of solitude fighting demon dogs everyday definitely did unquestionable damage to this young man's mental health.
Tumblr media
It admittedly has a certain pull, maybe because I really fuck with swords, and I'm definitely going to catch up outside this episode, but it didn't feel like reading it brought much surprises. just comfortable victories. But I'm still going to say to go support it by reading it's official release on the tapas app if you can.
#3 loner life in another world (again this started out as a light novel originally done by Goji Shoji, meanwhile the manga story & art is done by Bibi) [read 118/164 chapters | ongoing]
I think by now you can assume that the main character in this story gets transported to another world, they do put some effort into distincting themselves though as the MC's entire class actually gets isekai'd
Tumblr media
and they were pretty meta with the mc actually not wanting to go to another world and get caught up in some grand quest, he was sort of alright just chilling and tbh I get it man.. I get it..
The art is pretty solid but again it's predictable and I know I've been saying that for everything but in this one they fr have the class split into jocks, nerds, girlbosses and etc. just like highschool musical… the characters and story was kinda cute… but just slightly more overbearing the more it went on… just like highschool musical...
I should also note that I really fucked with the mc's whole thing of just being a loner that likes to chill and not some loner edgelord that realizes we live in a society every few chapters.. that was definitely a factor in it's position on this list.
#2 murim login (Zero big on story, Cheol-byeok Jang on art)[I got 138/138 chapters | the story is ongoing]
In this fictional world, monsters come to earth and special awakened humans called hunters fight them. Our Mc is a low ranking hunter who happens upon a virtual reality game capsule that sends him to the martial heroes' world.
Off the bat i have to say it's hella predictable story progression wise, like he pretty much just gets quests and does them but it's just so funny, I think mainly because of how poorly the mc is hiding that he's not from there but idk I was having some pretty good laughs.
Tumblr media
Also I have a huge bias towards martial arts which I think they illustrated pretty well so that's basically all I'm gonna say on that.
#1 omniscient reader (back to light novel source material here with Sing-Shong doing the original, then UMI doing the manhwa story and sleepy c on art)
This was my favourite for a few reasons, but my favourite reason was that, what i thought would make for a very predictable, fresh out the factory isekai, turned into a very engaging read.
The story is that creatures, monsters, catastrophes and etc are coming to earth, forcing humanity into survival scenarios and streaming it to audiences of beings called constellations for their entertainment. The thing is that as events start to play out, the MC realizes that what's happening follows the events of his favourite light novel, three ways to survive the apocalypse.
Tumblr media
As I said it was surprisingly engaging for something that seems to have the solution embedded in the literal title, but even though the mc had a definitively clear advantage, things definitely did not play out smoothly.
Great art. That cannot be understated. Coloured and everything so big shout out to sleepy c the artist fr.
Pretty well written, solid and varied cast. Lots of moving parts with fun unique interactions and the pacing has been REALLY great so far. Really appreciated the nice post apocalyptic realism where shit is genuinely fucked and it's not like the mc and his crew move like they own the moral high horse or something.
There's some nice tongue in cheek meta and the story generally has the feeling that it takes itself seriously but not too seriously where it feels like characters only exist for a specific set of events.
Also there's a bunch of mythology references via the constellations and though I think mythological crossovers make for pretty easy points, omniscient reader's execution made me look forward to and enjoy almost every single one.
With this one I also definitely fucked with the main character as their whole thing was being an avid reader 😅
Really really good, maybe not really really really good but really really good especially for an isekai. Not that I think anyone should really care about anyone else's scores but I gave it an 8/10. Definitely the read that pulled me into it the most
top 5 Isekai before this month:
(again I'd like to note I wasn't a big fan of the genre before this month and never really purposely consumed any before so a few of these are half joke half technicalities)
#5 death note by Tsugumi Ooba on story and Takeshi Obata on art, the combination also known as Oh! Great (the manga has 108 chapters, the anime 37 episodes)
This series has been talked to death (lol), I've mentioned it and its spin offs a few times already in more than one episode last year, so I don't even want to get into it but the alleged purpose of this podcast is to get more people into more manga so to be short.
Dude gets a book that kills people if you write their name in it and tries to create a better world by killing criminals… It does NOT. all go according to plan.
Tumblr media
You may be wondering where the Isekai comes in.. well there are shinigami aka death gods aka grim reapers involved who come to and fro from the shinigami realm
budum tss… technicality...
#4 no game no life (anime, 12 episodes)
Bored with life and considering the real world to be just a "crappy game," sibling shut-ins have withdrawn into their own fantasy world of video games. However, one day they find themselves summoned to another world by a boy who calls himself "God' and their abilities are put to the ultimate test.
Tumblr media
watched this way way back and just remember really loving the games, action, animation and all that, the siblings have a… kind of a weird dynamic but man, especially those last few episodes.. and a good chunk of the show is forever engrained in my mind I'd say..
..still hopeful we get a S2 one day :')
Just gonna note here that this list is kinda more about how these things are as Isekai, I definitely think death note is better than no game no life 😅
#3 The Animatrix (9 piece short film anthology, no more than 15mins each)
Tumblr media
Actually mentioned this before in season 1 ramble 8, A is for anime the solo reprise, and it was number 5 in terms of anime movies I watched that year, I'll say pretty much the same I said in that episode in that it's a very cool anthology adaptation with a lot of great new perspectives on the matrix, especially because it was an anthology and the different directors and their respective directions were allowed to come out
#2 Zatch Bell by Makoto Raiku (324 chapters in the manga, 150 episodes in the anime)
Ultra classic, Ultra culture and a series that I find too many folks have only know through hearsay.
Tumblr media
To keep it simple, in the demon world, when it's time to pick a king, their ingenious process is to send the demon children to the human world for a no holds barred battle royale.
Put plainly, excellent cast, excellent story, excellent action, it's an excellent manga that I highly recommend.
Also for those who don't know there's a zatch bell 2!! that started last year with 9 chapters out.
#1 animal land by Makoto Raiku (same guy):
Tumblr media
I ramble a bit but basically I thought zatch was his peak but I was sorely mistaken.
..
and that's it for top 5 Isekai consumed before this month,
also that's pretty much it for the episode, thanks again for listening in, hope you can get at least one good read out of this and maybe even something to share with a friend. until next time, try to enjoy the wonders of the world you're in right now. ✨
(then I do a small part 2 talking about some gripes I have with Isekai and some stuff that are probably maybe isekai or at least a little funny to think of that way like 2004 live action film fat albert starring kenan thompson... but you gotta listen in fer that 😗)

I am against the "Americanization" of fandoms.
What this applies to
Holding non American characters (and sometimes even fans) to an American moral standard. This includes
Refusing to take into account that, first things first, America is NOT the target audience, so certain tropes that would or would not pass in the west are different in Japan.
Like seriously, quite a few of the jokes are just not going to pass or hit, because they require background information that is not universal.
Assuming all American experience is standard. (This could mean watering down just how much pressure is placed on Japanese youth irl by saying that sort of thing is universal (while it is, to a degree, Japanese suicide rates are pretty fucking high because of how fast paced and work heavy some of their loads tend to be), and it's really annoying and rude when someone is trying to speak out about how heavy and harsh the standards are placed on them to succeed just for some American whose mom occasionally yells at them to do their homework dropping by to say "it's like that everywhere")
Demonizing (or wubbifying) a character using American morals, including and up to harassing fans over their interpretations or gatekeeping whether or not a character "should" get development (while you shouldn't do that fucking period, it's rude and annoying- this is specifically for the people who use American standards without acknowledging the cultural gap between them and, you know, the fucking target audience) ((Like seriously, saying "It's different in Japan" is not the end all be all excusing someone's actions, but sometimes the author didn't immediately think that maybe (insert vaguely universal thing) was that bad or that heavy of a topic before they put it into their media. If you don't want to see things like that? Pick a different series and stop harassing the fans))
Getting mad at or making fun of Japan's attempts to satirize their own culture. (A good example is Ace Attorney! To most of us, it's just a funny laugh can you imagine if courts were actually like that- guess what? Japan's are! (Not that America's are actually that much better, they just look good on paper))
Making America/American issues the center of your fan spaces
(Usually without sharing or bringing light to the issues that other countries are going through)
Your
Experiences
Are
Not
Univseral!
Seriously, very few things across America, even, are universal. Texas things the hundreds are nothing while Minnesota's like "oh it's only thirty degrees below zero"- so for fucks sake, stop assuming that all other countries work in ways similar to America.
It's good and important to share Ameican issues with your American followers, but guess what? America isn't the only country out there, and it's certainly not the only one going through bullshit. Don't pull shit like "why's no one reblogging this?" or "why should I care about what's happening in (X country)?"
Don't assume everyone lives in America.
Stop assuming everyone lives in America.
America is not and has never been the target audience for anime, and it's certainly not the only country outside of Japan that enjoys it.
Like I said above, sometimes Japan attempts to satirize its own culture. We can't tell what is and isn't meant as satire, because it's not our culture.
Social media activism can be tiring and maybe you don't have the energy to focus on things that are out of your control, but, if someone tells you about the shit they're going through, don't bring American politics up.
For the neurodivergent crowd out there thinking, "But why?" it's because a lot of social media, especially, is very heavily Americanized- sometimes to the point where people assume that everyone is American. Not to mention, it's disheartening. I'm sorry to say, but you're not actually relating to the conversation, you're often diverting the focus away from the topic at hand. Even if you mean well, America is heavily pedestaled and talked about frequently, and people from other countries are tired of America taking precedent over their own issues.
Don't divert non-American issues into American ones. Seriously. It's not your place. Please just support the original issue or move on.
Racist Bullshit
This especially goes for islanders and South Asian characters, as well as poc characters (because, yes, Japan DOES have black people)
Making "funny" racist headcanons. Not fucking cool.
Changing the canon interpretation of an explicit character of color in order to fit racist stereotypes.
Whitewashing or color draining characters. Different artistic skill sets can be hard, yes, but are you seriously going to look at someone and say "I don't feel like accurately portraying you or people that look like you, because it's difficult for me." If someone tries to correct you on your cultural depiction of a character and/or their life style, don't be an ass. (If possible, it would be nice for those that do the corrections to be polite as well, but it does get really frustrating).
Seriously, no offense guys, but, if you want to persue art, you're going to need to learn to depict different body types, skin colors, and/or ethnic features.
On that note, purposefully, willingly, or consistently inaccurately portraying people or characters of color (especially if someone in the fandom has "called you out" or specifically told you that what you're doing comes across as racist and you continue to do it). If you need help or suck at looking things up, there are references for you! Ask your followers if they have tutorials on poc (issue that you're having), whether it be bodily portrayal, facial proportions, or coloring and shading. Art is so much more fun when you can depict a wider variety, and guess what? Before you drew the same skinny, basic, white character over and over, you couldn't even draw that!
Attempting or claiming to DEPECT CULTURAL ACCURACY within a work or meta, while being completely fucking wrong. ESPECIALLY and specifically if someone calls you out, and you refuse to fix, correct, or change anything.
*little side note that the discussion revolving art is a very multilayered conversation, and it has quite a few technical potholes, which I'll bring up again farther into this post.
Fucking history
Stop demonizing or for absolute fucks sake wubbifying Japanese history because UwU Japan ♡0♡ or bringing up shit like "you know they sided with Nazis, right?" It's good to recognize poor past decisions, but literally it's not your country keep your nose out of it. And? A lot of decisions made by countries were not made by their general peoples. Even those that were, often involved heavy propaganda that made them think what they were doing was right.
Seriously, it's not your country, not your history. Unless you have some sort of higher education (but honestly even then a lot of those contain heavy bias), just don't butt in.
^^^ this also goes to all countries that are NOT Japan (specifically when people from non American countries talk about their history while in fandoms and someone wants to Amerisplain to them why "well, actually-"). When we said, "question your sources," we didn't mean "question the people who know better than you, while blindly accepting the (more than likely biased) education you were given in the past."
What this does NOT include:
Fanfiction
FANfiction
FanFICTION
FANFICTION.
Seriously, fanfiction is literally UNPAID WORK from RANDOM FANS- a lot of which who are or have started as kids. ((No, I'm not trying to excuse racist depictions of people just because they're free, please see above where I talk about learning to grow a skill and how it's possible tone bad and get good, on top of the fact that some inaccuracies are not just willful ignorance))
"Looking it up" doesn't work
"Looking it up" almost never works
Please, for fucks sake, you know that most all online search engines are heavily biased, right? Not to mention, not everything is universal across the entirety of Japan. You want to look up how the school system works in Hokkaido? Well it's different from the ones in Osaka!
Most fanfiction is meant to be an idealized version of the world. Homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, ableism, and racism are very prevalent and heavy topics that some fan authors would prefer to avoid. (Keep in mind, this is also used by some people in those minorities often because thinking about how relevant those kinds of things are is to them every day).
A lot of shit that happens in writing is purely because it's an ideal setting. I've seen a few arguments recently about how fan authors portray Japanese schools wrong- listen, I can't tell you how many random school systems I have pulled from my ass purely because (I need them to interact at these points, in these ways). Sometimes the only compliment I can think of is 'I like your shirt' or sometimes I need character A to realize that character B likes the same thing as they do, so I might ignore the fact that most all Japanese schools require uniforms, so that I can put my character in a shirt that will get someone else's attention.
Sometimes it's difficult to find information on different types of systems, and sometimes when you DO know those things, they directly rule out a plot point that needs to happen (like back on the topic of schools (from what I've seen/heard/read- which guess what? Despite being from multiple sources, might still be inaccurate!) Japanese schools don't have mandatory elective classes (outside of like gym and most of them usually learn English or another language- I've seen stuff about art classes? But the information across the board varies.), but, if I need my character to walk in and see someone completely in their element, I'm probably not going to try and gun for accuracy or make up a million and two reasons as to why this (non elective) person would possibly need something from (elective teacher) after school of all things.)
Some experiences ARE universal- or at least overlap American and Japanese norms! Like friends going to fast food places after school doesn't /sound Japanese/ or whatever, but it's not like a horrible inaccuracy to say that your characters ate at McDonald's because they were hungry. Especially when you consider that the Japanese idolization of American "culture" is also a thing.
Also I saw someone complaining about how, in December, a lot of (usually westerners) write Christmas fics! Well, not only are quite a few of those often gift fics, with it being the season if giving and all, but Japanese people do celebrate Christmas! Not as "the birth of Christ," but rather as a popularized holiday about gift giving (also pst: America isn't the only place that celebrates Christmas)
But, on that note, sometimes things like Holidays are "willfully ignorant" of what actually happens (I've made this point several times, but (also this does by no means excuse actual racism)), because, again: plot convenience! Hey what IF they celebrated Halloween by Trick or Treating? What if Easter was a thing and they got to watch their kids or younger siblings crawl around on the ground looking for tiny plastic eggs?
Fanfiction authors can put in hours of work for one or two thousand words- let alone ten thousand words, fifty thousand words, a hundred thousand words. And all of these are free. There is absolutely no (legal) way to make money off of their fanworks, but they spent hours, days, weeks, months- sometimes even years- writing. It is so unnecessary to EXPECT or REQUIRE them to spend even more hours looking up shit that, no offense, almost no one is going to notice. No one is going go care that all of my combini prices are accurate or that I wrote a fic with a Japanese map of a train station that I had to backwards search three times to find an English version that I could read.
Not everyone has the attention span or ability to spend hours of research before writing a single word. Neurodivergent people are literally a thing yall. Instead of producing the perfectly pretty accurate version of Japan that people want to happen, what ACTUALLY happens is that the writer reads and reads and reads and either never finds the information they need or they lose the motivation to write.
^^^ (This does NOT apply to indigenous or native peoples, like Pacific Islanders or tribes that exist in real life. Please make sure that you portray tribal minorities accurately. If you can't find the information you need (assuming that the content of the series is not specifically about a tribe), please just make one up (and for fucks sake, recognize that a lot of what you've been taught about tribal practices, such as shit like human sacrifices or godly worship, is actually just propaganda.)
Not to mention, it often puts a wall in front of readers who would then need to pull up their OWN information (that may or may not be biased) just in order to interact with the fic ((okay, this one has a little bit of arguability when it comes to things like measurements and currency, because Americans don't know what a meter is and no one else knows what a foot is- either way, one of yall is going to have to look up measurements if they want to get a better understanding of the fic)). However, a lot of Americans who do write using 'feet, Fahrenheit, dollars,' also write for their American followers or friends (which really could go both ways).
On a less easily arguable side, most fic readers aren't going to open up a new tab just to search everything that the author has written (re the whole deep topics, not everyone wants to read about those sorts of things, either). Not only are you making it more difficult on the writer, but you're also making it more difficult for the reader who's now wondering why you decided to add in Grandma's Katsudon recipe, and whether or not the details you have added are accurate.
Some series, themselves, ignore Japanese norms! Piercings, hair dye, and incorrectly wearing ones uniform are frowns upon in Japanese schools- sometimes up to inflicting punishment on those students because of it. However, some anime characters still have naturally or dyed blond hair some of them still have piercings or wear their uniforms wrong. Some series aren't set specifically in Japan, but rather in a vague based-off-real-life Japan that's just slightly different (like Haikyuu and all of its different prefectures). Sometimes they're based on real places, but real places that have gone through major changes (like the Hero Academia series with its quirks and shit).
Fandom is not a full time job. Please stop treating it like it is one. Most people in fandoms have to engage in other things like school or work that most definitely take precident over frantically Googling the cultural implications of dying your hair pink in Japan.
Art is also meant to be a creative freedom and is almost always a hobby, so there are a few cracks that tend to spark debate. Like I said, it is still a hobby, something that's meant to be fun (on this note!)
If trying new things and expanding your portfolio is genuinely making you upset, it's okay to take a break from it. You're not going to get it right on the first try and please, please to everyone out there critiquing artists' works, please take this into account before you post things.
I'm sorry to say, but, while it gets frustrating to see the same things done wrong over and over again, some people are genuinely trying. If it matters enough for you to point out, please offer solutions or resources that would possibly help the artist do better (honestly this could be said about a lot of online activism). I get that they should "want" to do better (and maybe they don't and your annoyance towards them is completely justified- again, as I said, if this becomes a repeated offense and they don't listen to or care about the people trying to help them, yeah you can be a bitch if it helps you feel better- just please don't assume that everyone is willfully ignorant of how hurtful/upsetting/annoying a certain way of portraying things is), but also WANTING to do better and ACTUALLY doing better are two different things.
Maybe they didn't realize what they were doing was inaccurate. Maybe they didn't have the right tutorials. Maybe they tried to look it up, but that failed them. Either way, to some- especially neurodivergent artists- just being told that their work is bad or racist or awful isn't going to make them want to search for better resources in order to be more accurate, it's just going to make them give up.
Also! In fic and in writing, no one is going to get it right on the first try. Especially at the stage where we creators ARE merely in fan spaces is a great time to "fuck around and find out", before we bring our willfully or accidentally racist shit into monetized media. Absolutely hold your fan creators to higher standards, but literally fan work has so little actual impact on popular media (and this goes for just about every debate about fan spaces), and constructive criticism as well as routine practice can mean worlds for representation in future media. NOT allowing for mistakes in micro spaces like fandoms is how you get genuinely harmful or just... bad... portrayals of minorities in popularized media that DOES have an impact on the greater public. OR you get a bunch of creators who are too afraid to walk out of their own little bubbles, because what if they get it wrong and everyone turns against them. It's better to just "stick with what they know" (hobbies are something that you are meant to get better at, even if that is a slow road- for all of my writers and artists out there, it does take time, but you will get it. To everyone else, please do speak up about things that are wrong, but don't make it all about what's wrong and please don't be rude. It's frustrating on both ends, so, if you can, please try not to escalate the situation more.)
Anyways, I'm tired of everyone holding fictional characters to American Puritanical standards, but I'm also tired of seeing every "stop Americanizing fandom" somehow loop into fanfiction and how all authors who don't make their fics as accurate as possible are actually just racist and perpetuating or enabling America's take over of the world or some shit.
Fan interpretation of published media is different than fan creation of mon monetized media. Americans dominating or monopolizing spaces meant for all fans (especially in a fandom that was never meant for them to begin with) is annoying and can be harmful sometimes. Americans writing out their own personal experience using random fictional characters (more often than not) isn't.

Title: I wish i could forget you
Tony Stark was not supposed to be in the car when Howard and Maria Stark attended a Christmas holiday party for another company. In fact, Hydra had wanted him to stay home.
Unfortunately, Tony had ticked off Howard a bit too much, and so here he was in a tuxedo that was a bit too big, uncomfortably shiny shoes, and a temper that was close to blowing.
Thank god they were almost home.
When a car crashes, one almost can’t believe it. Tony can see the outside blurring, and he can hear glass crunching, and he hears things that he really doesn’t want to hear. He is fairly sure that Maria screamed.
A metal arm.
Huh.
Well, not the most typical. He also doesn’t think that the man knows he’s here.
Howard and Maria Stark are killed. Tony feels like shit because he couldn’t do anything. His forehead is bleeding and he didn’t want to move out of fear for himself, which seems selfish, but also maybe a survival instinct?
God, his bow-tie is still constricting air flow.
Once the man turns, Tony realizes that he wasn’t the target. They probably had no idea he was in the car, whoever “they” were.
He gets out of the car. The car door creaks, and the man whips around.
His eyes widen.
“You--what?”
The voice is surprisingly American.
Surprisingly? He’s not sure why it’s surprising, it’s not like an American can’t kill just look at history, but still, Kind of surprising.
"What, wasn’t supposed to be here?” Tony rasps out. He realizes now that he’s basically sent himself a death sentence as the man surges forward.
“What are you doing here?”
His eyes are piercing. Also very, very familiar with some photographs that Peggy has on her mantle and her desk.
James “Bucky” Barnes. Son of a bitch.
“What are you doing alive?” Tony asks. “I thought you were lost in a ravine in Europe somewhere.”
“What--huh?”
“Ravine. In Europe. You know who you are, right? Is this some kind of sick...what did they do to you?”
“I do not know what you are talking about.”
His eyes get cold again.
“Who are you?”
“I am the Asset.”
It is now that Tony realizes that every single shitty sci-fi book is probably right, and his disdain of “wacky science” and “magic” have all been for nothing, because here is Bucky Barnes, who apparently has no idea who he is.
Then Tony gets knocked on his ass. His body slams against the icy road, and Barnes is rushing towards a motorcycle.
And he’s alone. He can’t breathe, all the wind knocked out of his chest. He thinks he broke a couple of ribs.
No one believes him. At all. SHIELD brushes it aside.
“There’s no way Barnes could be alive. You were probably just seeing things,” they tell him. “Would you like us to find you a therapist?”
“No,” Tony says, and they ask why. He laughs, sipping on his water. “SHIELD has so much loyalty to itself, I’m afraid I’d be compromised.”
“Therapists aren’t supposed to divulge any information,” Nick Fury adds carefully. “And we’re a secret-keeping bunch. Nothing goes out that comes in.”
“Unless, of course, it’s necessary,” Tony drawls, staring at Fury. God, the leather outfit...that’s weird. “Then I’m out in the open, Nicky. And what fun is that unless I get to show off an outfit in full-coverage?”
“...I’ll have an agent escort you home. We’ll have guards overnight.”
“Don’t bother.”
“And why is that? Think you can handle it by yourself?”
“Fury, my family has made a career out of thinking a lot of things. You’re not being as detrimental as you think.”
He finger-waves, grinning and winking at agents on the way out.
Now comes paranoia. This is welcome, actually, because it’s allowing him to work up new security measures and hack into various security cameras around the world to see if he can find Barnes.
It’s like he’s a ghost. And fuck, maybe Fury was right. Tony doesn’t like that, but that may be it.
Merry fucking Christmas.
Years go by, and Tony keeps a tiny ear to any news about mysterious deaths that can’t be explained. A man that glows in lamp-light, has no identity. He’s not sure if it could be Barnes. God knows he’s no longer seventeen, and Barnes--it if it was Barnes--would be way older. He should’ve been an old man in 1991, but he wasn’t.
It kind of reminds him of the conspiracy theory that Walt Disney was kept cryogenically frozen, which is just ridiculous, because as far as he’s concerned, you’d need a bit more to you than just regular skin and bones.
And this is where it hits him.
Barnes was experimented on when he was captured by Hydra. Peggy told him that Rogers told her that he was repeating his dog tag number over and over, as if someone was trying to take him over.
Yeah, you’d need a bit more.
Like a fucking super soldier serum.
This then delves into Tony realizing that if Barnes is flash-frozen, then...well, could Rogers have survived? He always thought his dad was crazy, but a broken clock is right twice a week or however the hell that saying goes. He never used it, he wasn’t a broken clock.
(He was broken, but he’s not going to compare himself to a clock. Perhaps  Model-T.)
They find Rogers. Tony realizes Howard did his math completely wrong for years, and probably never let anyone look at it because he was a World Super Genius. And a Colossal Dick.
Steve Rogers is one tough cookie to crack. Tony chips off some of the ice and puts it in a glass of scotch.
“Do you really think that’s the most appropriate thing to do?” Phil Coulson asks.
He’s shocked, but mainly because Tony has seen his Cap collection, and that man has so many limited edition cards and lunchboxes that it’s a bit crazy. But at least he knows how to decorate with it and not have it look like an absolute nutjob swept into his house and did it all in red-white-and-blue.
“Phil, my darling, when have I ever done anything the appropriate way?” Tony asks. He stares at the face that’s emerging out of the ice. “Besides, what else are you going to do with this ice, hm? Besides melt it all off?”
Steve is a miracle. Every scientist on earth wants to poke and prod at him.
Tony breaks him out of SHIELD in a week, because he swears to shit if one more scientist asks to take blood samples “to see how going under Arctic temperatures affects the bloodstream” (and also take DNA for cloning) he’s going to lose it.
Fury yells at him for two hours.
Steve flips Fury off from the couch, where he’s been channel-surfing for the better part of three hours.
“You’ve already corrupted him,” Fury scowls. “Rogers, we need to talk--”
“He’s retired,” Tony says.
(Steve is not, technically. Hasn’t said anything. But Tony is putting him on mandatory retirement for at least a year.)
“What’s...what the ever-loving fuck is that?” Steve asks.
An infomercial. For an automated chair. Mostly used for old people.
Tony grins.
“You wanna see how fast I can launch you out of one?”
“I’m going to say yes. Professionally.”
Ten miles an hour, and Steve goes flying across the room into a pile of pillows.
It’s not the end-all solution. God knows Steve calls him “Howard” and asks where a lot of nasty food is, and sometimes can’t tell the difference between what his brain is seeing and what is actually there.
But Tony gets him help. And Steve goes to art school.
It’s all very funny, actually. Steve rants about “modern art” and how “if he could kill any concept it would be abstract expressionism, what the fuck.”
Tony buys and then donates a Rothko in his honor.
Steve fumes, but finds it hilarious.
Then, there’s the attack on New York.
Norse god of mischief decides to end New York, blah blah blah.
Captain America reappears, everyone loses their shit, and Tony almost dies.
Then he gets four other roomies besides Steve, and he has to make a chore chart. Ugh.
Barnes reappears in France. Tony gets a fairly good image, and Natasha stills.
“You know about Winter Soldier?”
“Barnes? Yeah.”
“You know who he is?”
“James Barnes. At least, I think. He tried to kill me, wasn’t very successful at it.”
Steve overhears.
This leads to a chain of events that ends in Steve not coming to family dinner because he’d rather sit in his room and listen to Green Day or Glenn Miller or whatever the hell gets him even more upset.
“Listen, Steve, I’m sorry. But up until this picture? I was only about sixty percent sure I wasn’t full of beans.”
“Why is that the phrase you use?”
“What, full of beans? Bruce says I have to work on my cursing. Apparently, children are impressionable. Who knew?”
It’s not a total success. Steve still doesn’t like that Tony didn’t outright tell him, but Tony isn’t going to tell Steve that he has the mental stability of a single cashew.
So begins the hunt for Barnes. Which actually isn’t too bad.
He’s in DC. Not for any political clean-up, unfortunately. He’s trying to kill Fury. Tony doesn’t know why, at least until he looks up Pierce, who’s technically, mostly retired from SHIELD.
And yet still uses most resources that technically? He needs more than one authorization from multiple people.
God, people are getting bad at covering their tracks. Used to be harder to catch and see if someone was doing dirty deals.
(Okay, not like he can talk because Obie was...well, no use in discussing that now. He needs to focus.)
Nat and Steve are bad at lying. This kind of surprises him, because Steve is usually a successful liar. He’s convinced Clint that it’s not him who keeps eating his peanut-butter-fudge ice cream, but Thor.
And Natasha used to be Natalie Rushman. Then again, Tony was poisoned during that one, so that might just be on him.
-
Helicarriers go in the water.
Tony’s working on making sure most of the information doesn’t reach the general public, although he can’t stop it all.
Barnes falls off the face of the earth, and Steve wants to go on another treasure hunt.
“Let him come to us, or figure himself out.”
“This isn’t a college kid going backpacking in Europe for a year,” Nat snaps. “He’s...you know who he is, who he was, and what he can do.”
“Counterpoint: we don’t know if he secretly really wanted to see traditional decoration of Ukrainian Easter eggs,” Tony says. “God knows that I want to learn more about that.”
“Is everything a joke to you?”
"Only on federally mandated holidays,” Tony says with a shrug. “But let him be. Steve, it’s one thing that he didn’t kill you. It’s another thing that he hauled you up from the Potomac. I’m not sure I would’ve done that because who goes up alone to a helicarrier?”
“Historically nobody,” Natasha says. “Most people don’t have any helicarriers.”
“God, this situation sucks,” Tony says. “What if. We potentially. Ignore all of it and have spinach and artichoke dip? Hm?”
“With toasted bread?”
“I’m not an animal, Steve.”
“Your penchant for four a.m. coffee while you don’t realize you’re singing songs from the seventies says otherwise,” he responds.
“Well well well, if it isn’t the punishment of you getting the aux taken away for a week,” Tony taunts.
“Oh, come on!” Steve whines.
“Nope, just you having to listen to more of Bruce’s questionable tastes.”
“Fuck.”
Barnes comes stateside. The only reason Tony knows this is because Jarvis says that he may have spotted Barnes, but he’s not sure.
“J, you’re the most advanced system in the world, not to mention my son, and you like to hack into the Pentagon for funsies.”
“All of that could not have prepared me for this.”
Barnes is wearing a neon green tank top that is advertising Coco Beach in Florida.
“Can I laugh? Or is that sad?”
“Multitask, Sir.”
“Oh, true.”
Barnes is not in New York. Tony has to near-about put an electric fence around the whole state so that Steve doesn’t go on a road trip.
Hell, Tony doesn’t even trust him to go to coffee alone, but that’s a bit much.
“We have to wait,” Tony says.
Sam Wilson is a godsend. Also the funniest man Tony knows.
He is also emotionally healthy and very perceptive, so he has been noticing that Tony is nervous.
Because how do you face the man who killed your parents? Technically?
“Are you talking to your therapist?” Sam asks. “Just thinking you should.”
“Sam, we’re working on my issues from 2007. Believe it or not, it will be taking a full year.”
“I don’t like that I can never tell if you’re serious.”
“I know you remember the tabloids from 2007, I wrote a mesh vest. Clearly, I need so much help.”
Sam snorts.
“Maybe. Hey, I’ll catch you later. Clint and I are gonna go try and find some questionable shirts to crop.”
“Did his little protege convince you? Bishop, right?”
“Kate, yeah. She’s convinced our public image will go viral or something. Good luck with helping Steve and Nat with your super-soldier hunt.”
“Thanks. Let me know if you find a shirt with my face on it. I want it.”
Sam snorts.
“Will do.”
Bucky Barnes comes to New York in early May. The springtime is slowly but surely fading off, sun approaching more and more. Tony is enjoying coffee on a veranda, and then suddenly his waiter is nowhere to be found and he’s not entirely sure if his visitor takes credit or debit.
“Can I help you?”
“Maybe. Depends on if you’re gonna kill me or not.”
“I think Steve would be a bit broken up about it.”
“Do you care what he thinks?”
“On this situation? Yes. When it comes to culinary choices? No.”
There’s a ghost of a smile on his face. Tony’s trying extremely hard not to remember shattered glass and a motorcycle on ice.
“Can we, uh, table this conversation? For later. Espresso and all that, plus the added bonus of our shared history, so...”
“Shared history?”
“You don’t remember?” Tony asks. Bucky shakes his head. “Ah. Then this is truly a comedy of errors. Maybe. Um. Listen, I, uh...I gotta go. You need to talk to Nat or Steve or hell, maybe even Thor. Is Thor a good option?”
“I’m sorry, what?”
“Barnes, I can’t exactly face you right now.”
And then he jumps off a balcony.
A fucking balcony.
Jesus H. Christ, his therapist is gonna be so excited for their next session.
The suit wraps itself around him, and he can finally breathe, and he’s thinking about calling Pepper and see if she would like to schedule him a vacation for maybe anywhere but New York and Iowa.
“Why not Iowa?” Pepper asks. “They have good antique stores. I’ve gotten quite a few good finds for clothes.”
“I can do shopping retail literally anywhere else, absolutely not.”
“Spoilsport. Steve know you’re leaving?”
“I didn’t even really tell Steve what happened with my parents.”
“Oh, your therapist called. She sounded concerned, but also intrigued.”
“It’s because Sally almost became an employee of NASA and still has a soft spot for aerodynamics.”
“What exactly did you do when faced with Barnes?”
“Check the front tabloid page tomorrow, just tell everyone I’m out of town.”
“Got it. And Tony?”
Her voice is soft.
“Yes, dear?”
He can feel her rolling her eyes. Affectionately, of course, but rolling all the same.
“Be safe, and come back. You know Rhodey and I miss you.”
“I miss you too.”
A week is spent in Malibu. He really is thinking about selling this place. But for now, it suffices.
Steve texts him.
bucky’s back. holy shit
be back in a week. radio silence.
got it. no more messages from me. thor tells me to tell you that he broke the sink
:((((
And that’s it. He’s sitting in the house for a week, has already called Sally once and explained how his suit works, and then listened to her talk about how “his reliance on the suit to help him escape unfavorable situations is not exactly the healthiest but also none of my clients have had to face someone who is of weird standing.”
It’s no secret that Tony doesn’t like Howard Stark. Who would’ve liked that sorry excuse for a father, a man who was so cold-hearted the Arctic looked like a tropical paradise?
Maria was...Maria was different.
She wasn’t a good mother. No, she was never a good mother. But she tried, and she didn’t deserve her fate.
And then there was the question of Bucky Barnes. Who wasn’t Bucky when he was there, but still so damn recognizable.
It’s kind of like when there’s a movie about a famous person, and another person plays them. Like Tom Hanks, essentially. Bucky played whoever the fuck they get Tom Hanks to play and it’s similar: you see the resemblance, but it’s not it.
So yeah.
There’s also the little tidbit that things get complicated when you involve personal feelings and rationality, and really? Tony misses New York. A lot. And he’s not going to let someone else overtake his life just because he’s uncomfortable.
So he flies back to New York.
He’s in a bad way, Barnes is.
“He remembered you,” Steve says. “What he did.”
“Ah, there’s that.”
“He doesn’t have to be here,” Natasha says. “I have a couple of SHIELD safe houses to choose from.”
“None would be adequate to house something like me,” comes the response.
Barnes looks remarkably shitty, as if he hasn’t slept in eighty years. And maybe he hasn’t.
“Jail would be more fitting.”
Tony rolls his eyes.
“You are literally the most dramatic person ever, and Bruce threatened to take over the government because Thor ate the last croissant. Put those on the grocery list, Steve
“We’re not gonna throw you in jail,” he continues on. “Not because you happened to be used as a goddamned Swiss army knife. I have issues, sure, but I’m not going to be going all Hannibal Lecter or whatever.”
“Who the hell is that?”
“Cannibal. I realized that that’s a terrible comparison, please forgive me.”
“Why a cannibal?”
“Couldn’t think of anything else but Anthony Hopkins, the actor. My mistake. Point is, we’re gonna have to go through some channels, and I’m introducing you to BARF, as well as a new person who’s gonna rock your world.”
“I’m pretty much well-acquainted with vomit.”
“No, not that,” Tony says. “Although we can cover that through my 2005 edition of partying if we really wanna dig up some old magazine interviews. No, I’m introducing you to something that’s going to change your life.”
-
After that, Tony doesn’t have much to do with Bucky’s life.
He serves as a permanent guilt trip, nothing says “well, shit” much like being a permanent guilt trip.
Sally tells him that they should talk it out. Do all that “and how do you feel?” questioning that makes his skin crawl and his eyes ascend to the ceiling.
I mean yeah, they share a living space. Tony has seen Bucky laugh and smile with Sam, talk with Bruce about a really interesting article about regeneration of plant cells or whatever, and Bucky enjoys videochatting with Wakandan royalty.
(It also helps that Shuri is blunt as ever, but so blisteringly smart. He’s reading her paper on regeneration of nanotechnology, and it just...it’s the Pieta of research, that paper.)
But he never speaks to Bucky. Well, he does. But it’s more along the lines of “hey Barnes” and “how are you?” which aren’t exactly the Most Thought Provoking Statements Ever Made.
Summer comes swiftly, and about near with a vengeance. Tony’s dealing with a heat wave and trying to figure out if going outside is even worth it, and then he and Bucky are alone in the kitchen.
Tony was debating getting a couple of popsicles from the freezer. Bucky is considering sabotaging Clint’s smoothie that was supposed to be special for tonight, but that he’ll most likely forget.
“Hey,” Bucky says. “Um, can we talk?”
Shit.
He’s been avoiding this, officially, for a month. Potentially more if you’re going to count a few choice events that have been brought up by his psyche.
“Sure thing, buttercup. What are we talking about. Economy, world crises, the great debate on financial advice?”
“Isn’t the third thing just the economy?”
“We can break it down over coffee.”
“Mm, maybe another time. No, I’m talking about us. About how I--I kind of ruined your life.”
Tony blinks.
“You didn’t ruin my life. If my life was ruined you’d be hit with so many lawsuits that I could make the rest of your life look like the third circle of Hell, or wherever it is that people go nowadays in Dante’s eyes. No, you didn’t ruin my life.”
“I still killed your parents.”
“If you hadn’t, someone else would’ve. Believe me, there were about fifteen others in line. Sometimes, myself included.”
“You can’t not take me seriously,” Bucky stresses. “I still did a terrible thing. I just want to make sure you know that you’re being too kind.”
“I most certainly am not,” Tony says. “Being too kind would have me feeding you grapes.”
Bucky’s face blanks.
“Don’t. I...I don’t wanna take advantage of your hospitality. I don’t want to remind you of what happened.”
“You wouldn’t be here if you weren’t wanted,” Tony says. “Believe me. And if you want to leave, you’re free to leave. I don’t want to make you feel like you need to stay here.”
“I...I want to make it up to you.”
“Then use BARF and review it,” Tony says. “I’m serious. I need user feedback, and you’re the best candidate for it. Also, please try to convince Steve to wear neon yellow. I just want to see if he’ll do it.”
Steve wears neon yellow. Tony laughs so hard he cries.
Bucky smiles.
It’s a nice smile, really. It’s wide and happy and wow. That’s all worth it.
And then BARF. Bucky just gives user feedback, nothing else. Tony doesn’t want to know anything else, but they start talking more.
Tony finds out that Bucky’s been doing crosswords to catch up on current events, and he’s bought taped recordings of World Series games.
He loves antique stores. He visits them and brings home little trinkets that he remembers in his own house, or what he remembered. He watched old commercials from the fifties and sixties, laughed as he remembered the Sears catalogs that would come in the mail.
“Me an’ my sisters would beg my mom for new clothes from the catalog, and she never would. Always sewed our pants and skirts so damn well, I probably could’ve used them for the next ten years.”
Tony laughs.
“Well, I can’t promise I can sew. But I could give you some armor that could last you twenty years, if you want. Steve told me you’re thinking about doing some distance missions.”
“Just observation, no armor required.”
“Sometimes it’s the simple missions that get the worst hits,” Tony says. “Believe me, I know how it goes. So, do you want some armor?”
Bucky smiles.
“Sure.”
“I’ll need feedback.”
“I’ll give it all I’ve got.”
Bucky is a goddamned dream to design for. He knows exactly what he needs, what areas are most likely to be pierced, and also has a flair for the dramatic: he requests an Iron Man helmet be embroidered on the back.
“You’re really just trying to be sweet on me, aren’t you?” Tony teases.
“My master plan to gain your fortune,” Bucky teases right back. “I’ll waste it all on champagne pools and the worst-looking but most expensive shoes I can find.”
Tony laughs.
“Sugar, that’d be incredible if you could spend all of my money on that. I’d commend you.”
Bucky smiles, and it shouldn’t be as nice of a smile as it is, but here Tony is with his opinions and his concerning thought that maybe he wants to see more of Bucky.
In the morning, there begins a routine. Tony is always up at eight o’clock. It’s a rare lull in Avenger-morning-routines: Nat, Steve, and Bruce are all done, and Thor and Clint won’t be in until ten o’clock at the earliest.
(What can he say? Thor’s a god and Clint...well. He needs a lot of beauty sleep.)
Tony makes coffee, and Bucky makes them both breakfast. Says that officially, it’s to test and make sure that his prosthetic is still performing under optimal conditions.
(They both know that’s not it.)
Tony always says he pours too much water, makes enough for two cups.
Steve calls them out on it.
“You two are being weird,” he says. “And not like Thor and Bruce trying to reenact that one show about ghosts and unsolved things.”
“That’s their form of courtship, don’t be fucking rude,” Clint remarks. Natasha snorts.
“What, us being weird?” Tony asks, pouring a bit more coffee into Bucky’s mug. He always uses too much creamer and then won’t finish his coffee unless there’s more. “Why do you say that?”
“It’s because you both do couple shit,” Bruce says, breezing into the kitchen. “Also, Steve, lovely to see that you have volunteered to be the next guest on Avengers: Unsolved. We’re planning on using you as a guilt-trip in order to access files about aliens.”
“Truth will be found!” Thor adds. “But also, yes. Bucky, I thought you were taking him on a date to the art museum on Saturday.”
Bucky turns red. So does Tony. It really is quite inconvenient.
“I mean, we could go on a date there,” Tony says. “If you’re okay with that.”
“You’re doing this in public?” Natasha asks, eyebrows raised. “Hm. Would not have called that.”
“You owe me fifteen dollars,” Bucky says. “Not you Tony, quit looking at me like that. Yes, it will be a date on Saturday, I’ll wear a nice shirt. Nat said that I couldn’t do anything that surprised her.”
“Technically, Tony surprised me.”
“I thought dates were mutual events, hm? Fifteen dollars. I’ll use it to buy the best bouquet in New York.”
“The best bouquet costs over a thousand dollars,” Thor answers.
“Not questioning how you know that, but I’m scared of you,” Bucky says. “Then I will get the best fifteen-dollar-bouquet in New York.”
Tony snorts, smiling.
“I guess I’ll spray a bit of my perfume on my pillow then, soldier.”
“I’ll pick you up at noon sharp,” Bucky says, grinning. He finishes his coffee. “We’ll make fun of Steve’s art exhibit together.”

-----------------------------------------------------
I shook the spray paint can again and held down the button, watching the black line grow in the direction that I moved my hand. I loved everything about spray paint. The sound it makes when you spray or shake it. The variety of colors. The whole style of street art in general.  It was something we had to ourselves, us kids in the street. I finished it off, taking a step back and just looking at it. West Side motherfuckaaa. I thought to myself as I chuckled.
“How you gonna like laughing about that in prison?”
I whipped my head around to see a cop. A very unamused cop. Fuck. I scanned my surroundings, debating running or not. His car blocked one of the exits and his partner’s in the other. My chances were slim to nonexistent, so being logical for once, I decided to hold my ground. Better to go out like a man right?
“You know vandalizing’s a crime? No you probably didn’t. What would some wasted thug know about anything?” he laughed, finding himself amusing. I smirked as I responded.
     “If that’s what you think”
“C’mon we’re taking your ass right back to jail, and you can explain to a judge why you were out at 3 am spraying gang signs on a public structure.” He pushed me against the wall, handcuffing me. Damn. I really was about to go back to jail. I just got out too. Dally’s gonna kill me.
------------------------------------------------------
I was not looking forward to that phone call. But I had to do it if I wanted a chance of getting out of here. I reluctantly picked up the phone and dialed his number. After a couple of seconds, he picked up.
“Hello?” his voice was deep and raspy. He probably just woke up.
     “Hey baby”
     “Y/N? What’s wrong?”
“Man, something doesn’t always have to be wrong for me to call my boyfriend”
“Doll, it’s three in the morning... What happened?”
“Y’know, it’s not really a big deal or anything but.... I may or may not have got arrested again. And I kinda need you to come down here and see if you can bail me out or something.” He let out a long sigh.
“Babe, how many times have I told you to be more careful?” He was angry. Not that I blamed him though. I would be angry too. I did get angry when he got arrested for some stupid shit. It was my own fault for being careless.
“Were you drinking again? Uhh Y/N, how could you be so careless? Do you know what could’ve happened to you if you happened to stumble across the wrong kinda guy? Do you know what happens to pretty, intoxicated, young girls at night on the streets Y/N!”
“Yes...” I responded my voice trailing off sheepishly. I hoped it wasn’t evident in my tone that I was hurt. I hated when he yelled at me. And I hated that he was always right. He let out a long sigh.
“Of course you do. I’m sorry for yellin’ at you doll. It’s just that I can’t help worrying for you. You’re all I got. Besides, if anyone dared to mess with you, you’d kick their ass. You’re one tough broad.” I could feel the smirk on his face as he said that. “I’ll be down at the station in a couple of minutes baby.” He said as he hung up.
He groaned as he approached the cell where I was being held. That couldn’t be good.
“Babe, they said there ain’t no bail this time” Shit. I was either going to jail for a couple more months or getting a shitload of community service hours. Hopefully the latter.
“Eeh, don’t worry about it Dal”
“I’ll just get a few months, that’s all.”
“Yeah but those months gonna feel like forever without you there.”
“I’ll be out before you know it. You should go get some sleep baby, it’s late. Or should I say early now?” I leaned in to kiss him through the cell bars. We only got a quick peck before the police officer yelled at us.
“Fuck him.” Dally mumbled before leaning in again. The officer basically dragged him out of there after that. I smiled. Classic Dally.
-----------------------------------------------
There I was, sitting in my defendant chair, at my trial. Fun times. Dally, Johnny, and Sodapop came. Dally, because he had to, Johnny because he’s my best friend, and Sodapop simply because he had nothing better to do.
“Due to past offenses and lack of change in behavior from past prison sentences, I sentence Ms Y/L/N to 45 hours of community service, which can be completed in the span of 35 days at the local church.”
“With umm, all due respect your honor, can I just go to jail instead. Y’know sweeping floors and shit just ain’t really my thing.” I looked at Dally. He was smirking, trying to suppress a laugh or something. I sent a nasty glare his way.
“That type of profanity will not be tolerated in this courtroom Ms. Y/L/N, don’t make me tell you again. And I believe there is a choir that is in need of young members.”
“A choir?” I questioned, unimpressed. “You want me to go sing to God for spray painting some bridge? That just messed up man” Soda started laughing, apparently finding this whole situation amusing. “I ain’t takin’ yall to my court shit no more”
I walked out of the courtroom, Dally trailing along behind me. To say I was pissed was an understatement. How was she gonna make me go sing at some church and say that it’s community service. I mean, yeah I had a good voice, but you just don’t go walking around singing here, it was a quick way to get your ass kicked. Besides, I was supposed to be some hardened criminal or something. You ever see some hardened criminal dancing around on some stage. No. And you can bet your ass you won’t. That’s just how things work around here, and some people aren’t ever going to understand that.
“C’mon babe, it’s not that bad” he grabbed my arm, pulling me close to him. “I mean at least you’re not locked up somewhere, ‘cause we can still do stuff you know?” he winked. Of course that’s what he thought of, but I couldn’t help but smile. Dallas just had that effect on people. He could make ‘em laugh if he knew them real well. I leaned in for a kiss.
“Yeah I guess it ain’t so bad.”
------------------------------------------------
“I gotta wear this?” I almost yelled, holding up the choir robe.
“Why yes dear, it’s mandatory for all performances. Lucky for you, this is only a practice.” the nun replied. I was going to have to change that.
The nun lead me into the music room. The room got silent the moment I entered. They all recognized me, either from the paper, news, or they saw me in the midst of doing something illegal. This would be the last place they all expected me to show up. But here I was. They soon all resumed what they were doing, going back to their chatter and practicing riffs and other stuff among those activities. A young woman approached me. She was a little taller than me, skinny with straight red hair and thick glasses. She looked familiar somehow.
“Bass, alto, or soprano?” she asked. “I don’t sing.”
“Alto.” she stated. She clapped her hands twice. All the students looked up, and got into their places without even mumbling another word. These guys must be strict. Here’s the little problem with that. I don’t follow rules very well. I never have, and I’ll never care to learn. She dragged me over and placed me in the middle section, in the front. Great, I thought. Now she’s gonna be watching every little thing I do. She sang out “la la la la la la la” and everyone else repeated it back to her. Yeah I wasn’t really feeling that so I didn’t. She repeated the exercise for the third time, and after seeing me not doing it, she pointed at me and called me to the front, right next to her. Here we go again. “la la la la la la la”. I once again ignored her attempt to make me sing. I wasn’t going to do it. Sorry man, it’s bad for my rep. I mean, it’s not like I didn’t want to sing, I loved to. It’s just that I didn’t want to sing in front of a group of people just for them to laugh at me. She closed her hand, silencing everyone else.
“La la la la la la” I just stared at her and shook my head nonchalantly. She was persistent for she repeated it again. Realizing she wasn’t going to stop until I did, I sung it back quietly and purposely off-key. She shook her head and did it again. This time I sung it right, but still quietly. She nodded her head and smiled, as she made the rest of the choir resume. We continued this and practiced some other classic gospel songs for the rest of the time. 4:30, finally. I went to leave, following all the other students out, but her voice rang out.
“Y/L/N, stay after.” Great. Just what I needed.
     “Why weren’t you singing?”
     “I was” I corrected.
“Doing the bare minimum required is not singing. I know that the only reason you are here is to fulfill your service hours and then go back to being a menace to society after but, while you are here you will not be a burden to my choir. And yes you may have been mumbling the words to the songs incorrectly, but unless you are adding something to the group, you are a burden. So you may want to consider contributing something to this group. Is that understood?”
“Yeah I guess. I just don’t know what you think I can ‘contribute to this group’. I ain’t got no talent or nothing. All’s I got is drugs and street smarts man.”
“As I heard before, you have a nice voice, which can be contributed by singing the lead to out next song, don’t you think?”
“No I don’t think so. If you think I’m gonna get up and sing by myself in front of God knows who, you’re crazy.”
“Whether you like it or not, you’re going to have to sing while you’re here, so you might as well try.” she urged, grabbing sheet music and handing it to me. She sat down at the piano. “I’m assuming you’re familiar with ‘Oh Happy Day’?” I nodded in response. “So sing it” she said as she started playing the rhythm on the piano.
“Oh happy day” I almost mumbled. She stopped playing.
“Sing out, nobody’s here to judge you” she started playing from the beginning again.
‘Oh happy day.” I repeated, this time a little louder and clearer. “C’mon you aint gonna scare no one.”
“Oh happy day” I sung out loudly, my voice vibrating off the walls of the tiny room. “Now you got it.”
----------------------------------------
I was sitting on the couch, my head on Dally’s shoulder, watching Mickey Mouse with the bois.
“So, Y/N, you gonna be singin’ in the choir this Sunday huh?” Soda asked, even though he already knew the answer. “Mhmm” I responded curtly, not wanting anyone else in the gang to know about it.
“Blimey Y/L/N, I didn’t know you were in a choir.” Two-Bit explained. “You should’ve told us Y/N, we would’ve came if it meant so much to you.”
“Lay off it Two-Bit, it’s for community service.” I said, rolling my eyes, lighting a cigarette. That was the last thing I wanted, for all of them to show up to see me mumbling words, wearing some cloak, looking like a complete idiot.
“Geez Y/N, it’s not like I asked for your first born child. What’s got you so mad anyways?” he asked as if it wasn’t obvious. What part of forced to sing in a choir wasn’t he getting. I threw the pillow next to me at him lightly. Dally chuckled.
“Don’t get so worked up about it doll” he provoked, smirking. “Shut up Dal... What’s everyone gonna think when they see me up there, in some crusty robe. I’m supposed to be tough or something, and singing doesn’t really help with that much”
“Oh c’mon babe, you’re doing community service hours because you’ve been to jail too many times or something like that. Everyone in there’s already scared of you.” I had to at least let a tiny smirk on my face. He was right. He always was.  “I know” he said smugly.
“Huh?” I questioned. “You said all that out loud doll.” Oops. “Fuck you.” I said, sticking my tongue out.
---------------------------------------
It was the big day. Fun right? Yeah no. The room was almost full with people and we were about to go on. I didn’t even know people still went to church. Nope. There was no way I was doing this. There were way too many people for my liking. I would just go back to court, and take whatever excessive penalty they gave me. I may go to jail, but at least I’d have my dignity. I was just about to walk out when the teacher came up to me.
“You’re really about to leave right now?” she raised her eyebrow. I nodded sarcastically in response. “So all that hard work, all that time and effort, not only put in by you, but by the rest of the choir, you’re just going to throw it away? If you leave right now, not only are you screwing yourself over, but the rest of the choir, and the people who were expecting us to sing today.”
“You can find someone better to sing my part.” I remarked.
“Oh, so you’re scared? You’re scared they’re not going to like your voice. You’re scared you’re going to ruin your reputation. You’re scared to show them that you’re exceptionally talented. Now let me tell you something. I don’t care who’s out there today. I don’t care who’s watching or judging us. You’re going to go out there, and you’re going to sing, no matter what. Because I’m not going to let you screw over this whole choir, and more importantly, I’m not going to let you screw up your chance to have a perfectly good opportunity to do something that you may love. So today, you’re going to get up on that stage and you’re going to sing for whoever the hell may be listening. And you’re going to do it well. You owe it to us. After that I don’t give a crap what you do. You can leave and go to jail time instead. Just not today.” she demanded, leading us all out onto the stage.
I took my usual spot in the back, but she pulled me to the front. She gave us a 4 beat count off and the piano started. I scanned the audience. Right in the front row was the gang. Shit. I panicked. They couldn’t know about this. I was already nervous to begin with. There was no more time to worry. The teacher pointed at me, cuing me to start. I sang the lyrics quietly, and not that well. I finished the first verse.
“You’re going to have to do a lot better than that.” She said. “Come here.” she pointed next to her in the very front. Feeling quite embarrassed I took my hands and shoved them in my pockets, staring at the floor. “You take your cues from me.”
“la la la la la la la.” We repeated it back to her. She pointed at me. “You.”
“la la la la la la la.” I repeated the tune. “Sing it”
“Oh happy day.” I sung, this time loud and clearly. You could feel the tone in the room shift. “Oh happy day” people looked up in shock, maybe because I was singing it, or maybe because we sounded really good. “When Jesus washed. When Jesus washed. When, my Jesus washed, he washed my sins away.” I threw a couple riffs in there to make it fancy.
“la la la la la la la.” we sung this warm up again a few times. “Let’s party.” the teacher said. “He taught me how” we sang in harmony, as we clapped on the second and fourth beat. “Oh he taught me how” I walked toward the front of the stage even more, the simple rhythm moving me. “To wash, to wash” I repeated from the background melody. “And live rejoicing. Yes he did. Oh yeah. Every, everyday.” I continued. The melody went down a key. “Oh, oh, happy day. Oh happy day yeah. When Jesus washed. When my Jesus washed. When Jesus washed.” I went into my falsetto. I finally gained the courage to look over at the gang. Soda’s jaw dropped, and Dally just sat there with a look in his eyes that I just couldn’t place, but they all definitely looked surprised. The crowd even started clapping, midst performance. I couldn’t help but smile. “My sins away. Oh you know I’m talkin’ bout happy days. Oh yeah. Sing it. Sing it. Sing it. Yeah. C’mon. Oh happy day.” We all finished, arms up in the shape of a v. The crowd erupted in applause, standing up too. Wow. I never expected such a positive reaction. We all took our bows and headed off back stage.
I changed back into my greaser attire, and headed out in search of the gang. I found them quick, easily spotting Darry. The second I reached them they all swarmed on top of me. Steve pulled me under his arm, pretending to hit me on the head with his fist.
“Damn, Y/N, you never told us you could sing like that” Darry marveled. “Any other things you’ve been keeping from us, like a secret son or somethin’” Two-Bit joked. They all continued like this for a while, until Dally interrupted.
“Alright, alright. Damn I can’t even talk to my own girl with all you bums around.” but even he couldn’t help but smile. “Yeah c’mon guys, let Y/N go talk to her boyfriendddd.” Soda started. “ooooooooh” they all joined in. “Oh shut up.” I said playfully, shooing them off with my hand. Dally walked me out to his car, his arm slung over my shoulder. He opened and closed my car door and then went around to get in.
“Look man, you know I’m not good at this type of shit but, Goddamn Y/N. You never told me you had a voice like that. Man I ain’t exaggerating when I say that you have the most beautiful voice I ever heard. Shit, I never knew my babygirl was so talented.” he took his eyes off the road to give me a quick kiss. I was smiling so much by then. The car swerved, almost hitting a tree.
“Dally!” I almost screamed while laughing. “What baby, it’s only a tree.” he was laughing too.
“I guess community service ain’t so bad after all.”

BnHA Chapter 243: Happy New Year
Previously on BnHA: The government was all “shit what are we going to do about Shigaraki Tomura and his Actual Fucking Army of villains, oh I know, why don’t we draft some child soldiers” and so they brought back internships and made them mandatory. Class 1-A had the Christmas party to end all Christmas parties, featuring 20 unique custom-tailored Santa costumes, enough chicken to feed Tomura’s entire Actual Fucking Army, and one (1) giant sword that somehow made its way into the hands of Eri, First of Her Name. Tidings of comfort and joy were had by all, and to cap things off, Shouto invited Bakugou (who by the way was having a lot of thoughts about how Best Jeanist asked him to reveal his new hero name the next time they met, because Horikoshi knows what kind of angst I like) and Deku to come intern with him at the motherfucking Endeavor Hero Agency and make everyone’s OT3 dreams come true.
Today on BnHA: Deku visits his mom on New Year’s Eve and the two of them ball out at the Make Me Cry Olympics. There is a whole plotline all about Hawks getting coffee, and I’m trying to figure out if it’s really just coffee or if THE ENTIRE SERIES SECRETLY HINGES ON THIS ONE SCENE omg. The next day at the Endeavor Hero Agency, Endeavor is all, “welcome! fuck you,” which may or may not be setting the tone for this whole arc. There’s a brief flashback to All Might congratulating his sons on their internship and saying foreshadowing things like “your new quirks probably won’t go fucking apeshit again” and “you’re a lot like Endeavor, this internship will be good for you!” Back in the present, Endeavor dramatically leaps over a railing and blasts off to go fight Monk Gyatso with the disaster trio hot on his heels. Hawks then shows up out of nowhere and the text is literally all, “WHAT’S HAWKS DOING HERE?” and seriously though. What are any of us even doing here. This arc has only just started and I already have no idea what’s going on and I fucking love it.
(All comments are my unspoiled reactions from my initial readthrough of the chapter. I did a quick edit for grammar and clarity immediately afterward, and added a few ETAs in the process, but aside from that there are no changes.)
loooool
Tumblr media
is she going to be all right
-- also! WE’RE GOING TO SEE THE PARENTS AGAIN HOMG YES. HORIKOSHI YOU’RE ON FIRE WEEK AFTER WEEK YOU MAD DOG
(ETA: literally the only way he could end his streak was by going on fucking hiatus. son of a.)
oh shit I forgot that they had the cover and a color page this week! this is great
Tumblr media
by the light (ba da dum ba da dum) of the silvery moon (ba da dum ba da dum) I want to spoon -- holy shit, what. do you ever look up the lyrics to a song you vaguely remember from your childhood twenty-five years later in order to make a bizarre joke in a manga recap and you’re like “!!?!?” lol what the fuck. this shit is from 1909. old timey pervs
anyways this may be my favorite Jump cover ever. colors are amazing, art is super cute, it’s the whole package. Aoyama and Iida are killing me. I need that Iida ball in real life, I would seriously pay real money
and now the color spread!
Tumblr media
where can I buy that U.A. hoodie. I’m not kidding, I need it in my life. the U.A. logo is great because it doesn’t scream “LOOK AT ME I’M AN ANIME FAN” unless the other person also watches said anime, in which case that’s awesome because the two of you can become best friends and bond over how you’re both nerds with impeccable taste
Kacchan out here holding a fucking root beer like we don’t all know the truth. yeah tough guy you go to bed at eight-thirty and you’re third in your class at the top high school in Japan. but you keep on trying to preserve that image. also this kid is singlehandedly making wifebeaters high fashion I swear to god. it’s a talent
Kirishima looks so good in v-neck shirts yes you go Kiri!
Mina is here!! Mina is part of the main character squad now, everyone! that’s right!! Iida Tenya was booted out after he refused to partake in this photo shoot due to moral outrage over the fact that they’re shooting this at what appears to be a crime scene. a vacuum cleaner was murdered in cold blood omg
Ochako not smiling is such an unusual look for her (and Mina and Kirishima too for that matter) but holy shit. I like it
TODOROKI I’M TRYING TO REACH THROUGH THE COMPUTER SCREEN AND UNBUTTON YOUR TOP BUTTON. HOLY SHIT HOW CAN YOU EVEN BREATHE. RELAX
so the new character book is out October 4, eh? I think we knew this already, but maybe this time the date will actually stick in my mind. anyways, so doing the math, that leaves Kacchan three more chapters (including this one) to reveal his hero name. boy you have a deadline get to work!
YESSSSSSSSSSS
Tumblr media
MY NEW YEAR’S ARC MAY NOT BE HAPPENING, BUT AT LEAST WE STILL GET TO SEE THEM RING IN 2217 HOORAY
damn that’s a lot of narration in the first panel
Tumblr media
“while accompanied by guards” oh shit. and yet, I get it. I like how they refer to it as “the chain of events that led us to move into the dorms” rather than “that time Bakugou got fucking kidnapped.” they are not letting that happen again. good
IZUMAMA YESSSS
Tumblr media
at least he’s being open with her about it! come on Inko, push through this. he’s already got 240 other things he’s still not telling you, don’t give him any more reason to keep being secretive
oh my god now Deku is like “anyways do you remember Eri?” and he’s reaching into his pocket now, holy shit?? WHATEVER HE’S PULLING OUT IS GOING TO BE SO FUCKING CUTE, ISN’T IT
oH MY GOD!!!!!
Tumblr media
THIS SON OF A BITCH IS JUST GONNA KEEP ON AMASSING A COLLECTION OF ADORABLE AND HILARIOUS LITTLE KID LETTERS, ISN’T HE. LISTEN HERE DEKU YOU MOTHERFUCKER!! THAT PIC OF “MISTER DEKU” IS -- I’M -- !!!!
“I was hardly able to do anything for her” ?? you SAVED HER LIFE?? you BODYSLAMMED OVERHAUL INTO THE GROUND?? YOU GOT US ALL OUT OF THAT ACCURSED BASEMENT? listen here you modest little shit you need to stop doing this. you even taught her the true meaning of quirks for crying out loud. you are the actual best
god the way he is staring at this letter is giving me too many feels for a Thursday afternoon. these are like Saturday night feels. this manga never goes easy on me
Tumblr media
same Inko same
oh my god now Inko is launching into a speech about Deku’s sad childhood I can’t with this, MA’AM PLEASE
Tumblr media
“covered in bruises” oh my problematic ship. oh this nuanced manga with its intricate layers of feels. this is the lasagna of mangas
hello page 3 is just one big assault on all my emotions and I would like to report this to someone help I am being besieged
Tumblr media
oh my fucking god Midoriya family. I’m trying to process all of this and just!!
like. she’s known all this time how big his heart is and that he doesn’t care about himself and just wants to protect others. but for the longest time he was powerless to do it. but still he kept dreaming and she kept looking on waiting for that day he’d finally give up, ready for his heart to break, bracing herself. and then this miracle happened and he got a quirk and all his hopes came true and he got to go to his dream school, and now he’s training to become a hero just like he always wanted
and everything special she always saw about her boy is shining so brightly now, and everyone can see it, and he’s become so strong. but also he’s growing up so fast. he’s gone from being someone she had to protect to someone who’s strong enough to protect not only her, but everyone. strong enough to carry the world on his shoulders
just. can you even imagine. how much pride she must feel, in addition to the relief she’s expressing now. but also the loneliness of knowing she can’t hold on to her baby boy forever and he’s on the verge of going out into the world and leaving her. in fact he basically already has. anyways I came here today for some Three Musketeers antics and now I’m sitting her with Izumama empty nest feels, what is this
-- yo, what?? he’s starting the internship on New Year’s Fucking Day? U.A. doesn’t fuck around, goddamn
(ETA: seriously, no rest for the weary here. both Endeavor and Hawks are as busy as ever too. poor Hawks, who never wanted to be a hero to begin with, spent New Year’s Eve undercover trying to drown his sorrows in sugary coffee. of course, Jeanist is spending his New Year’s either in hiding or dead, so.)
anyways so he’s bidding his mom goodbye and getting onto a bus, and he’s all bundled up in a scarf but can’t be assed to wear a jacket, apparently. whatever Deku
AHHHH WHAT IS THIS NOW
Tumblr media
AND OH MY GOD LOOK WHERE HE IS
Tumblr media
THE LEAGUE OF PLIFF’S HEADQUARTERS AT THE OL’ OVERLOOK HOTEL. watch out for the elevators. Toga probably really likes them though
“where did you run off to number 2” um, he’s still a top ranked pro hero? what, do they just expect him to never do his job ever again? even if they think he’s on their side, they must realize that he needs to maintain his so-called cover
anyways, fucking Slidin’ Go is back, guys. when is someone going to punch this slippery bitch in the face
wow he’s seriously chewing Hawks out for flying off without permission. can someone please just deck this mouthbreather already
oh my god
Tumblr media
this motherfucker really truly believes he is Hawks’s senpai. imagine having the same power as a fucking banana peel, and being so deluded you actually think you outrank a double agent of indispensable value, who also just so happens to be Dabi’s best friend, and oh yes, THE NUMBER TWO FUCKING HERO. I don’t even know where to begin with you, Slidin’ Go
oh snap but he’s immediately being called out on his BS lol this is great
Tumblr media
twenty microdevices?? holy shit. that’s gonna make it really difficult for him to actually report back to the heroes
maybe if the PSC gives him twenty of their own little spy cams. then the only challenge is for him to try and remember which are which
lmao look at this little metaphorical drawing
Tumblr media
isn’t this the Hyrule Castle level from Breath of the Wild
anyways don’t mind me, I’m just sitting here trying to figure out if there’s a double meaning to these two panels
Tumblr media
is Skeptic just really bad at making small talk, or is there something here that I’m totally missing?? did he witness something during Hawks’s coffee run?
(ETA: this seriously reads to me as some kind of coded threat, but it makes no sense given the rest of the conversation. he goes on and on about how useful Hawks will be in helping them spy on the heroes, but then calls attention to him sneaking out to buy a single can of coffee. in conclusion I am probably overthinking this way too much, but it’s odd. maybe he really is just trying to be nice and coming off as weird and creepy.)
now we’re flashing back to Hawks’s last report to the PSC
Tumblr media
if this is after he met up with Dabi then why does he still have the bag? WHEN WILL THIS STOP HAUNTING ME. I’M SO TIRED OF WAKING UP AT NIGHT IN A COLD SWEAT ONLY TO SEE HAWK’S BACKPACK STANDING THERE RIGHT NEXT TO MY BED, WATCHING
-- SDLKGHSLDKHFL
Tumblr media
lmao this scared the shit out of me. Enji what the fuck
yesssss it’s mah boisssss
Tumblr media
wow, he’s pretty weirdly enthused about the whole thing, huh? I expected him to bitch about it more. since Shouto basically offered his friends the gig all on his own without any consultation whatsoever. that’s called nepotism Shouto but it’s okay I forgive you
anyways. so are the Endeavor offices located in THE FUTURE. or what. is this Epcot
DKFJWELKFJL
Tumblr media
LOL THAT’S MORE LIKE IT. FOR A MOMENT I THOUGHT WE HAD SLIPPED INTO SOME WEIRD ALTERNATE UNIVERSE
hahaha exactly
Tumblr media
well I’m glad I’m not going crazy, at any rate. anyways though, Endeavor trying his best to be a good dad and caving in to his son’s ridiculous demands because he’s trying to make up for TWO DECADES OF BEING COMPLETE GARBAGE is pleasing to me as always. deal with it Endeav
Tumblr media
HE SAID DEAL WITH IT!!
oh my god Katsuki is saying something holy shit, the next few panels will set the stage for what could be the sleeper hit character dynamic of the year. ghghkghhhhhh
Tumblr media
( ⁰ o ⁰ )
oh my god
Tumblr media
(ETA: Katsuki I have written whole essays about how perceptive you are and then you just. sob. now that he’s finally starting to ease up on the whole Angry Asshole thing, his inner dumbass is really shining through.)
YES HE IS AND THERE’S NOTHING YOU CAN DO, YOUR BOURGEOIS SON HAS FALLEN IN WITH THIS CHURLISH ROUGHNECK FROM THE HOOD, DIE MAD ABOUT IT!!
lmaooo
Tumblr media
that mental image omfg. HE WILL PUT UP WITH THIS SUFFERING IN ORDER TO GET CLOSER TO HIS GOAL. what a sacrifice. the pros outweighed the cons. it’s logic. I can’t, I
and Endeavor being so fucking mad that Shouto picked this asshole to be his new best friend sob. YOU CAN’T STOP THEIR BROMANCE IT IS UNFOLDING BEFORE YOUR VERY EYES
anyways I love everything and I’m all set for the mentoring to begin. bring it onnnn
so now Deku is being surprisingly earnest and thanking Endeavor for accepting them into his agency
and we’re getting our first glimpse of Deku’s Upgraded Feelings About Endeavor oooooh juicy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deku is so good at seeing into people’s hearts. and so forgiving. we already knew he was -- the inciting event that led to the whole fucking series wouldn’t have even happened if he wasn’t -- but I’m honestly still so impressed every time I see it
(ETA: and also, this means that he still went and told him off during the sports festival even though he was scared of him. kid is the fucking role model to end all role models.)
also I’m already sensing that this chapter (and indeed, this entire arc) is going to prompt more Discourse up in the ol’ fandom. that’s going to be fun. anyways, I’ve already essayed more than once regarding Endeavor’s redemption arc, so I’m not going to spend too much time hashing out the same old points. but basically my stance is I’m fine with it. I think it’s good to show that people can change no matter how far they’ve gone down the wrong path. it may not be easy, but if they’re genuinely remorseful, and if the desire is there, then why not? I’m not gonna get up in arms because someone is trying to become a better person. the alternative is that they stay terrible, and that doesn’t help anyone
anyway, so now we’re flashing back to what appears to be a conversation with All Might, and oh my god
Tumblr media
but you guys. listen. Katsuki is there, again. they’re not even discussing OFA this time and he’s still there! elbowed his way into this mentorship like the determined little shit he is, and now he’s not leaving and you all just have to deal with it. oh my god it’s everything I ever wanted, someone please pinch me is this real??
lol and now they are discussing OFA, but that’s okay. it’s only natural that would also be on the agenda
really, All Might?
Tumblr media
you consider that “just fine”? that bloop? just as planned?? I know you love your son, but maybe consider raising the bar for him just a little bit. he is capable of so much more, and now of all times is not the time to go easy on him
and he’s still talking about the SIXQUIRKS as though unlocking more of them right now would be a bad thing. I really think this is the wrong approach. maybe I just want to see Deku go buck wild and fucking lose it though, idk
Katsuki has no patience for this either
Tumblr media
“I don’t doubt it.” please Deku we’re not worthy of you and your wholesomeness. and he’s so sincere, too?? how does Kacchan continuously absorb all of this shameless admiration and affection day after day, week after week. how is he not humbled by it
anyways time to shut up about that though because All Might is now mentoring Bakugou directly and this requires my full fucking attention
Tumblr media
yessss let the character development commence! I’m so excited ddhkshl
and now we’re back in the present and the conversation is taking a very interesting turn!
Tumblr media
YES! HE DID! DO YOU REMEMBER? YOU WEREN’T REALLY PAYING ATTENTION BEFORE BECAUSE YOU WERE STILL IN ASSHOLE MODE. what do you have to say about it now?
...
Tumblr media
mysterious
Tumblr media
what
(ETA: “is he always like this?”)
lol what
Tumblr media
hahaha. this arc is off to a fucking hysterical start
oh snap y’all look at this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
100% chance Deku is right fucking behind him lol. probably they all are
YEP
Tumblr media
BITCH, WHO THE FUCK DID YOU THINK YOU WERE DEALING WITH. YOU THOUGHT THESE WERE JUST ANY OLD INTERNS?? FUCK YOU, THESE ARE PREMIUM, CLUB-LEVEL, OCEAN VIEW INTERNS, YOU UNAPPRECIATIVE LOUT. YOU INGRATE
lol but he’s not missing a beat though, and he’s ordering them to stay behind and watch him oh shit. what is even going on
now we’re cutting to some fucking yogi bobbing around town in a lotus position screaming about a divine revelation he received from fucking space. okay
AHHH WHAT
Tumblr media
HAWKS IS ALREADY GETTING IN ON THE ACTION, JESUS CHRIST. DOES THIS FUCKER EVER PUT ON THE BRAKES?? THIS ARC IS LIKE TWELVE DIFFERENT PLOTLINES INTERSECTING ALL AT ONCE AND I CAN BARELY KEEP UP. THIS SHIT IS A TRAINWRECK WAITING TO HAPPEN AND I’M STANDING HERE MESMERIZED
BUT!!!
Tumblr media
cue Celine Dion’s “All by Myself” while I fall down dramatically nooooo. the lord giveth and he taketh away. YOU OPENED A DOOR AND CLOSED THE WINDOW YOU BASTARD sob why
well shit. and that means that Katsuki has only one chapter left to reveal his hero name, too. (ETA: keeping track of the important things here lol.) and somehow I don’t see that happening unless the focus of the next chapter takes a very dramatic shift, since we seem to be launching into full plot mode before any of us even have our seatbelts on. not that I’m complaining about that because sdkljk
anyways. see y’all in two weeks I guess. the My Plots Academia arc sure is off to a crazy fucking start

5/31 to 6/5: (everything else and) Prom
36th WEEK, MAY 31-JUNE 5, 2016.
Tumblr media
English class has always been interesting to me. If I think about it, English class (be it here as a first language, or back home as a second language) is always more fun than Indonesian Language class back home. In my class in Rainier Beach, which is IB English Language and Literature, we read classics and Shakespearean plays and interpret those. (don’t get me wrong, I had to read The Scarlett Letter for English Lang class during my short stop in Houston and it was painful, but something about how English teachers’ way of teaching is so interesting and, of course, not boring)
For the semester’s big project, however, we were told to make podcasts. About anything.
I understand that podcasts aren’t much of a thing in Indo, but the simplest way to explain podcasts in a nutshell is audio lectures, audio books, discussions, serial stories, or anything about a topic. And honestly, it’s not even just lectures. You can talk about anything in a podcast (in my Theory of Knowledge class, we listened to a series of online podcasts entitled “Serial”, which covers a story for each season that is told in an interesting and comprehensive way).
But this time, Mrs. Shaw doesn’t limit us to just audio, but we can put visuals in it as well. So, basically saying, our big project was to make an audio or video file talking about things which has our arguments in it. And we could do it individually or in groups of three, max.
Me, being myself who essentially resents group works can be quite an individualist, of course, decided to do the podcast by myself.
And me, being myself who almost always aims to be anti-mainstream, chose a topic that most people would hate and throw rocks to after the first glance.
I argued that zoos aren’t necessarily inhumane to animals. For a side that believed that zoos are downright cruel and disgusting, I stood against them.

Of course I know people aren’t always going to agree with me, but as a (used-to-be) debater, I tried to smother everything in good wording (and some solid arguments can i get a hell yeah), and at the end, all I need to be satisfied was Mrs. Shaw saying “you got a point.” (aka “hmm iya juga ya”).

It was an enjoyable school task to do. Ehe.
Anyway, the next two days, Wednesday and Thursday, were two sacred days we all students acknowledged dearly as Early Release days. The neverending amazement of Seattle has turned me into somewhat a Dora the Explorer, even though it was clear that I have always been a damn-straight home person back home. Would rather stay home that being somewhere else.
But an exchange student logic was that you’re missing a lot of you spend a lot of time at home.
So Kira and I hit the waterfront and rode the Seattle Ferris Wheel.

And the next day I spent by myself, visiting the Seattle Art Museum and indulging my fangirl side by watching X-Men: Apocalypse.
Remember I mentioned once that it was the time of SIFF—Seattle International Film Festival?
Karen, Eric, and I looked up the showtimes and movies, trying to find anything interesting, and of course the choice went to an Indonesian movie, entitled “Copy of My Mind”, so we watched it on Friday evening.
It never occured to me that films in film festivals aren’t those up the regular theaters. Most of them are months old before the time of the festival itself, some even a year old or more. But I guess that’s the point of having film festivals: as a platform to promote films, because almost all of them don’t include big starry actor names, and all of them aren’t in a franchise.
Copy of My Mind, however, was starred by Chico Jericho and Tara Basro (blame was on me for just recognizing these names for the first time), and soon after the movie started, I got why I’ve never heard of this film before back home: it would never be able to air in Indonesia. Simple as that.

As usual, my movie-goer sense was so much indulged in cheap plots of franchise films where every message is shown explicitly during the film with a mandatory happy ending and a bonus of occasional car explosion, so when I saw the ending of Copy of My Mind, I was disappointed. I didn’t get the message.
(later I googled the film and it turned out to be a hard-core social and political satire towards my own country) (so yeah, go watch it guys) (majukan perfilman indonesia)
On Sunday, I was reminded by the remaining days I have by attending Nouha’s goodbye party. She would leave three days after the goodbye party, which is June 8, and I’m still staying here until the end of the month, but surely it sucks to remember that you have to leave eventually.
But the goodbye party was a fun one—sliders, chips, other typical tasty American barbecue snacks in the backyard, people bringing going-away presents, and of course, pictures.
(I swear the pictures were up somewhere but now I couldn’t find them)

Aight. That’s quite a brief (???) summary of how the first 5 days of the week went. Whereas I usually said the fun part comes in the weekend, this WHOLE week was full of fun and things to do (thank God for early release). HOWEVER, though, however,
this weekend was Prom.
That’s right, everyone, you heard it. The infamous American High School Prom.
....
Gitu aja sih. Ehe. OKAY. Prom in Beach... was definitely UNLIKE Proms in other, harshly saying, white rich school everywhere else. But the part where people ask other people to Prom, well, that was done everywhere, I guess.
I was walking the hallway when Rebecca and the others stopped by and Rebecca asked me, “Nabila, who are you going to Prom with?”
“...????? I don’t know??? No one asked me to.”
“It’s America, you can do whatever you want. Why don’t you ask somebody?”
yaela yang bener aja lu dasar ampas kepala.
Jadi gini sih. The way Prom works (or at least in my school) is that only the seniors are invited, unless the seniors ask somebody else from other grades—juniors, sophomores, freshmen, or people from other school—to be their prom date, then those persons are also invited. And I know Kira is a junior, so I asked Kira as my prom date so she can experience prom and everybody is happy. Also because Rebecca and Emily were committees so there are fellow juniors there. yaela padahal karena emang gaada yang ngajak dan akhirnya ngajak temen sendiri supaya tidak garing
I didn’t take too much trouble setting up a promposal—Prom proposal—unlike those who are seriously dating—a friend from Theory of Knowledge class made a poster and got his football team to promposed his girlfriend, it was very sweet—and because I was an awkward unromantic piece of shit, I asked Kira to be my prom date during stretching before softball game.
She was appalled. At least she wasn’t repelled, which was good. Good thing she didn’t expect a canon of flowers or posters or an orchestra playing for her to be promposed.
And that’s the story on how I got my prom date.
Which was totally not unusual, because at Prom night I found out that Alex asked Justin, a junior, so that Justin can experience Prom with his senior fellows too. Zion, who is gay, asked Nina out of friendship. A lot of people do that that night. Many people even went with their squads instead of being in pairs.
When Kira was scrolling through numerous online shops to find a dress, I bought mine in Nordstrom Rack—which was basically Nordstrom but they sell old stuff that were cheaper (because I didn’t feel like spending hundreds of bucks on a dress I’m gonna wear, like, once or twice for my whole life). Not only I bought it in Nordstrom Rack, I also bought it last Febuary, which was before Winter Ball. That being said, I used the same dress as what I wore for Winter Ball. Which was good, because I didn’t want to waste money on dress I would most likely use once. The admission ticket was around $40 anyway, while other schools my AFS friends were in charged around $80-100 for it. sekolah saya miskin emang, tapi asik.
But then again, I didn’t know how significant a prom date is—whether being asked to be prom date equals being asked to be one’s girl/boyfriend, or is it just a one-time occasion thing?
Whatever it was, I do know that at least Prom in Rainier Beach High School doesn’t shun single people. Yay. Nabila can go to Prom without worries.
HOWEVER.
However, around a week before Prom, I found out that Indonesian Students’ Association of Seattle University (ISASU), which was like a couple blocks from my house, was holding some sort of event, and guess who came as a guest star.
Tumblr media
....
NO.
I DO NOT LIKE HOW THIS TURNS OUT.
I REALLY DON’T.

After contemplating which one is rarer: to experience a classic American high school Prom night every exchange student wants to be a part of or meet a massive Indonesian dazzling pop-star in person, I did what I thought was best for me: I chose Prom and let go of Raisa, with the arrogance of “I’m Indonesian, she’s Indonesian, we’ll meet again but I only have this one chance for Prom” without realizing that that will least likely to happen.
I came to Kira’s house on Saturday afternoon, June 4, 2016, and ate Indomie for pre-Prom dinner (Prom dinner paling tidak modal sepanjang sejarah manusia). Then we had a photoshoot in which Kira and I look like a happy couple of lovers. Then Laura drove us to the venue. Which was a not-so-big space in SoDo but enough for the whole class lah.

Long story short, it was fun. At first it wasn’t really because both Kira and I did not know many seniors despite some people I recognize from classes I am in, so we talked with Emily and Rebecca. Then people I know started to show up—Nina, Justin, Zion, Alex, Gretar, and others—and we danced. What was fun about it was that everyone didn’t dance with their dates, but mixed in into big groups of friends and was having a pure hyped-fun time instead of a romantic one. (not to brag but Nina and I did some duets and we were killing it) (kapan lagi bisa hacep dan meliar kaya begini ya)
The King and Queen of Prom, instead of voting, was done by a raffle (maybe so that everyone can get a chance instead of a cliche competition of popularity). Rony got King and Antoneyah got Queen. There was also two photo booths, an elegant one with a sofa and a fun one like a photobox along with hats and fake mustache and other stuff you could use.

THEN, the event continued for whoever wants to join everyone to the Seattle Ferris Wheel, while free tickets were provided! We sporadically went to the Ferris Wheel by Uber—some people didn’t come due to curfew and probably an after-party somewhere (I finally convinced Kira to join after many considerations. Since the Wheel was closer to my house, she agreed to crash in my house after).
Lucu banget aih. Anak-anak remaja pakai baju-baju bagus, sebagain berpasang-pasangan, dan sebagian lagi bergerombol kelompok, dan rame-rame masuk ke kereta Bianglala.

Kapan lagi kaya gini huhuhu seneng.
It was—I don’t remember—a bit after midnight? After we were done Kira and I took an Uber back to my house, had ice cream in my bed while watching Monsters University, and fell asleep halfway through the movie (and my laptop ran out of battery).

Aaaand that’s probably as close I could ever be with Raisa: in the same city, neighboring neighborhood.
But at least, thinking back, I would not trade the experience I just had with anything else.
Salam dari penghadir Prom Rainier Beach High School dengan style hijab paling cantik (karena memang satu-satunya),
