My opinion on “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez story” PART I

If some of you guys have read my presentation post, you know that this show encouraged me to create this blog, because after finishing the last episode, I just needed to talk about it to someone. Unfortunately nobody I know has seen it or is even interested in seeing it. Anyway that’s not the point, I have a lot of things to say about the show, that’s why this post is only a part 1, and I’ll try my best to organize my thoughts as best as I can.

I. THE RYAN MURPHY PROBLEM

I feel like I needed to start with the most obvious one.

So first of all you need to know that my only knowledge of Ryan Murphy comes from the 5 seasons of American Horror Story that I watched. And the thing that I noticed straight away when watching AHS was the omnipresence of very, very uncomfortable and weird s*x scenes. Every 5 seconds you get these scenes that serve no purpose to the plot whatsoever, it feels like they’re there just for the sake of making people uncomfortable and satisfying whatever perverse desire Ryan Murphy has. Now, I’ll say that American Horror Story is fictional and that, at the end of the day, no matter how disgusting these scenes are, they remain in the fictional realm.

BUT the problem is that RM has clearly brought his weird and obscene fantasies into the world of what I can only think of calling “True Fiction” (a show or movie based on real events, and that wants itself to be accurate). It’s something that you can so clearly see in each and every episode of the show, and while watching it, I remember thinking how disgusting it was that this almost 60 years old man was just forcing his perversion into a representation of literal victims of incestuous s*xual abuse. And I genuinely cannot express how sick to my stomach it makes me.

Furthermore, I think that it is also very clear whose side Ryan Murphy seems to be on, and in my opinion and based on the way he decided to portray the brothers, I think that he clearly thinks that the boys are liar. Which okay, he is of course entitled to his opinion on the matter, even if I (along with a lot people) strongly disagree with it. The problem is that he should not bring his opinion into the show and make his opinion seem like the real and factual events.

On that same note, I’m sure most of you are aware, but Erik released a statement through his wife about the show, I’ll put it below :

And I’m so glad he spoke up and said how much fake things, inaccurate portrayals and misinformation this show was spreading. Unfortunately, Ryan Murphy responded to this statement, in the worst manner possible, here is his response below :

I find it absolutely insane to tell people, whose life you tried to recreate on screen, that you did an amazing job at it while these persons themselves tell you that you failed to put in light the truth that they spent their whole lives trying to be heard.

In conclusion on this whole part about Ryan Murphy, I was just really disappointed in the way that he produced and realised the whole show as well as the way he handled the aftermath of its release, this man even had the audacity to say that he had no interest in talking to the brothers so that tells us everything that we need to know about him. And I think that he should just stick to fiction and stop trying to film true crime shows if he’s gonna ignore the facts and just build the show on his opinion instead.

II. THE PORTRAYAL OF THE BROTHERS

The issue with the portrayals of the brothers is obviously directly linked to Ryan Murphy but I wanted to dedicate a part about it and not it be a sub part to the RM problem.

When I was watching the show, the first thing that struck me was the portrayal of Lyle. I was familiar with the Menendez case way before the show because, like a lot of people, I had watched the trials on YouTube. And while I cannot claim to know what Lyle is like, and none of us can, because we don’t know him, I was still quite shocked to see the way they made him act on the show. I guess that this arrogant, angry, violent and spoiled rich kid act just wasn’t what I was expecting, along with a lot of people. And we were right to find this representation to be odd because Erik, himself, talked about how inaccurate and defamatory this representation of Lyle was in his statement that you can read above in the Ryan Murphy problem.

So there's already that. And then, the worst part in my opinion, is the way that Lyle and Erik were, first of all, highly s*xualized and also represented as if they were in some kind of incestuous relationship with each other. If we focus for a second on the s*xualization of the brothers, the first example that comes to my mind is the shower scene with Erik in prison. What purpose does that scene serve in the telling of Erik and Lyle's story? I cannot help but think that this is just another manifestation of Ryan Murphy's perverted mind. On that same note (I'm gonna try and explain this next part as best as I can) but I think we all know now that RM has a tendency to cast attractive actors for these type of roles (ex: Evan Peters as Jeffrey Dahmer) to later s*xualize them non stop. And words are failing me to express how wrong that is, because in Dahmer's case he was literally s*xualizing a serial killer, and in the Menendez' case, victims of incestuous s*xual abuse. Again I fail to understand how this man doesn't see any wrong in that.

Now, about the representation of the brothers' relationship. As I was watching the show, I remember noticing all these little things that were insinuating that something romantic was going on between them, again I cannot express how uncomfortable it made me, I can only assume that it was the case for everyone else watching. And again, I cannot find the words to say how disgusting and sick this is. Because here is the thing, so we know that Erik was m*lested by Lyle, because Lyle was himself being abused by José Menendez, he was child and he didn't know any better than to try and recreate what he though was an act of love. BUT knowing that and willingly deciding to subtly portray these brothers as if they were in a consensual incestuous relationship is digusting and sickening.

And I want to clarify that this critic of their portrayal is aimed at Ryan Murphy and in no way at the actors, I will be talking about the actors' work in the second part, in another post.

Alright guys that's it for the first part of my opinion on "Monsters", I hope that maybe some of the points I addressed will help you see the show in another light if you didn't share my point of view. Here's something very exciting that I'm allowed to share with you now! I've been tempted back into the world of trading card game illustration, and I'm working on this very fun new game called Dead World! The goal of the project is to just make something that's really easy to learn and fun to play, and the creative premise is that rifts in reality have resulted in a post-apocalyptic setting where the world is full of monsters, robots, superpowers, and just all kinds of fantasy and sci-fi shenanigans in a kitchen-sink sort of mash-up environment! That means that I get to design and draw all kinds of fun things! Yay!

My first piece for Dead World was getting to work with the game creator to design this fun character from the zombie category of cards. Meet Jesse Knox! His parents fled the world of organized crime, which didn't end well for them, and Jesse's own quest to avenge his family's deaths led to his own demise as well! Whoops! But now he's back, baby! He's undead, he's got two swords, and he's ready to rock and roll! I hope you'll all like him. :)

1st Astarion and Solveig

My traumatized babies are finally in a happy and healthy relationship. They deserve all the happiness in the world after what they've been through. It took me 15 minutes to decided which horns are the best for Solveig - in game she has small but curved ones and I couldn't find a perfect match but I'm happy with the result. Their hands are my favorite part of the whole pic tbh, it's a small detail but carries so many emotions.

I made this to look like a moment from their wedding that's why they are wearing tiaras. I feel like Gale would totally shed a tear or two at his own wedding. Looking back at members of my party from my Ylva run, their wedding was probably hilarious - the other two companions were Astarion and Lae'zel. Imagine Lae'zel as a bridesmaid and Astarion giving best man speech.

3rd Snowid and Tomira

You've never heard of these characters? I would be more surprised if you did because they are from the book I'm writing - urban fantasy where Slavic myths meet steampunk. I want to talk about them for a bit so bear with me. Snowid (btw. his name means "the one who sees dreams" and I think it's so cool) is to put it simply a monster hunter and was cursed as a child with having visions of the future. Tomira is a child of a shapeshifting monster (most of the time she/her but can shapeshift and has a fluid relationship with gender). As many Slavic monsters do Tomira's mother had kidnapped a baby girl from a young couple and replaced it with them. Couple years later Tomira became a spy for one of the biggest crime organizations in the city and has been tasked with infiltrating the monster hunter corps. I think you know where this is going. My tragic, doomed by the narrative (aka by me) babies.

I only do MxF (with me writing the female role). I don’t double, but I’m more than happy to write side characters of either gender to help move the story along. I only want female authors writing male characters as I’m uncomfortable with cis male authors. (Nonbinary pals are an exception).

I'm really hoping to find a friendship, someone who can add to our story, and most importantly, someone who wants a long-term connection. It's difficult for me to write with someone if I don't feel that genuine bond. It's also important to me to have a high level of activity, with at least one reply a day.

I'm not looking for age play. It's a romance between two consenting adults who each act exactly their age, and they just happen to be different ages. 

Enthusiasm to chat about our character and ship, how to crush them and then gushing over fluffy moments. I love crying over characters and what the heck they’re doing. I want my heart ripped from my chest from angst, then feeling like it’s going to burst from overwhelming cuteness. I want us to love these characters and the world we create. I want to make pinterest boards, spotify playlists, graphics, and toss headcanons back and forth until late at night.

There’s nothing worse than receiving one sentence in reply to two paragraphs of ideas, or having a doormat partner who says “sure” to whatever I ask. Building ideas one on top of the other, watching them snowball into amazing plot threads brings me joy. But having to pull plot ideas like I’m pulling teeth makes me think you’re not interested, and I will lose interest in return.

I’m a multiple paragraphs/novella style writer. I love to write detailed descriptions and delve into a character’s head/emotions as well as surroundings. I compare it to writing a novel together. I only do MxF (with me writing the female role). I don’t double, but I’m more than happy to write side characters of either gender to help move the story along. I only want female authors writing male characters as I’m uncomfortable with male authors. (Nonbinary pals are an exception).

Just a small town Irish girl, living in a lonely modern day world. She took the midnight forest going anywhere.🎵🎼

As Josie is held captive and terrorized in a secluded cabin by Peter, her evil, sadistic ex boyfriend, she comes to a breaking point of fight or flight. She chooses both. Off she runs deep into the forest to escape his abusive clutches, a decision that will change her life forever as she literally stumbles into a fantasy fairytale world of magic, love and beauty that she had always dreamed of…except she soon comes to realize that not all of it is beautiful, but quite dark and that monsters are very, very real.

This fantasy fic begins in 2022, joining the modern day world into middle earth of New Zealand....I have written Thranduil and all the characters and even the woodland and surrounding realms much differently than the books or movies so please do not expect it all to be as Tolkien wrote them. I have also added characters from other fandoms because I like variety and I feel it makes for a more unique story. You'll have to keep reading to see who they are 😉

Code Blue begins with the introduction of the character Dr. Lee Pace and his mental struggles as a physician and with his personal life in which he's thrown into the path of an oncoming love that he never saw coming. As two dark and chaotic worlds unite, many lives are forever changed in this emotional and psychological rollercoaster of drama, love, jealousy and danger among much, much more. Friendships will be tested. Loyalties will be questioned. Trust will be broken. Losses will be suffered and secrets will surface. A train is on a collision course to Salem, Massachusetts. Who will be united and who will be divided? No one is safe. Hence the title...Code Blue.

Code Blue reunites my favorite Tolkien boys, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Orlando Bloom and Craig Parker in a drama filled story of love and danger in the medical and organized crime world, including characters from other movies and tv shows the middle earth boys have been in. My inspiration didn't stop there though. There's also characters from my favorite soaps General Hospital and Days of Our Lives and last, but certainly not least, the Walking Dead's and Supernatural's Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Ghost whisperer's David Conrad and also the Scottish actor Gerard Butler.

Soooo I just finished the Doma arc of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (also known as Waking the Dragons or the Orichalchos arc) and I wanted to share my brief thoughts about it.

To begin with, I was quite interested in this arc. I already read the manga fully, watched GX, 5Ds and I was going to start Zexal but decided to at least finish DM before moving on from the "original trilogy". The main reason I was interested in Doma is the fact that it's 100% an anime original arc that doesn't follow the manga. Moreover, its lead writer was Shin Yoshida (the same guy who made GX S4) which AFAIK is somewhat controversial among the fandom. I was interested in seeing how well could Gallop use the setting made by Takahashi to create an original story as the previous filler arcs (Noah, Legendary Heroes and Rebecca's arcs were quite short).

I have to say I liked it. I'll go over a few points that I loved about the Doma arc:

Yami Yugi got an insane development. In contrast to the overall heroic almost invincible development he got in the previous seasons (which is helped by the fact Gallop skipped the first 7 volumes where Yami has a more, let's say, violent attitude) we see Yami falling to the temptation of darkness and losing, showing himself vulnerable. He feels more human and deep. The famous (meme) moment where he goes berserk on Haga gave me some brief reminds of early Yami.

I really liked the idea of past characters like Ryuzaki, Haga and (especially) Mai getting more development and closure.

The 3 Musketeers of Doma are pretty good. I like their designs even if they kinda feel like they tried to fill archetypes (Rafael being the strong bulky guy, Amelda the androgynous and Varon having the design you'd expect a shonen protagonist to have) and their tragic backstories. I especially liked how with Varon and Amelda, the story got into darker themes related to organized crime and war. It reminded me a bit of Gundam.

I loved how Gallop took over the notion of the Duel Spirits and developed them more. I like the idea of the Duel Monsters not being mere tools but also beings of their own with their will, desires and such. I find Rafael's character arc and initial ideology to be interesting for that reason.

Unlike Noah's arc (which had the issue of being so awkwardly placed in the middle of the Battle City finals) or the Domino City battles arcs (which feel like a breather between DK and BC), the Doma arc not only doesn't feel awkwardly introduced but it honestly feels welcome because I remember the transition from BC Finals to the MW manga arcs to feel kinda abrupt.

As someone who has finished GX and 5Ds, watching the Doma arc for the first time is funny because it's where you can pin the point where the Yugioh anime franchise just went berserk. From the careful and lowkey "magical realism" approach of the manga to the wacky "the fate of the world rests on a card draw" type of science fantasy.

It teases and foreshadows some elements of the Egyptian arc. In general, I appreciate how they tried to make it feel connected.

I like how the Musketeers are presented as strong and almost invincible Duelists and they ARE strong and almost invincible.

The change of setting was nice and it helps make the Yugioh world feel bigger.

Now, some things I didn't like:

While I do appreciate Gallop picking Mai and try to give her some closure in contrast to how she is simply written off in the manga...it could have honestly been better. Don't even get me started on her anticlimactic ending and (off-camera) duel against Dartz.

Dartz is interesting and cool, but I personally find him a little boring compared to the rest of the villains. Maybe because I already watched GX and 5Ds so I'm a little burnt out by the whole "evil esoteric villain who wants to destrot the world". I'd say Doma itself is an interesting villain because of the whole notion of them controlling the world.

As said before, this is the moment where the Yugioh anime definitely establishes its own wacky line that would go further into fruition in GX and 5Ds...but some moments just feel so silly to be taken serious (like the whole US Navy asking Yugi, Kaiba and Jounochi to destroy the Eldritch horror villain because "they couldn't")

I know it's a filler arc (by definition, not in the pejorative sense) but, just like the rest of the DM series, it has some pacing issues (although not as big as the BC arc) with some moments just dragging for so long it becomes mind-numbing. It rubbed me off the wrong way that Gallop decided to waste the final episode of the arc (184) in making an unnecessary pseudo-recap episode instead of, you know, giving a bit better closure to Mai, Ryuzaki, Haga and the Musketeers.

It's pretty much common knowledge that the DM animation peaked at DK and then afterwards became quite inconsistent. This was (along with the awful pacing and artistic direction change) what I disliked the most about the Battle City arcs and it's repeated in Doma with some episodes (the ones made by Yumeta or by Gallop in-house) being beautiful and others (the ones outsourced to DongWoo, SSC and others) being terrible. The contrast gives me whiplash (the Mai vs Joey duel in Industrial Illusions HQs is a prime example).

All in all, I still liked it and I appreciate it as the true divergence point between the manga and the anime franchise.

Summary:

While in search of his precious friend, a young boy named Nai falls captive to a beautiful woman, whose looks are matched only by her taste for human flesh. Meanwhile Gareki, a clever thief, is in the midst of robbing her luxurious home. After causing a distraction, Gareki agrees to help Nai escape, but they are discovered upon the woman's return. As she transforms into a ghoulish monster, the boys flee.

On the run, Nai and Gareki are found by “Circus,” a government defense agency that deals with criminal activity too difficult for the police to handle and protects civilians from “varuga”—terrible monsters that devour humans for sustenance. In the hope that it will lead Nai to his missing friend, he and Gareki decide to join Circus. On their perilous journey, they face dangerous varuga and begin to uncover the secrets behind a shadowy organization known as Kafka.

Propaganda:

Karneval has two of the best protagonists I’ve ever seen. Gareki is superior to every other teenage boy protagonist in anime. His character arc, even in this one season that covers just a fraction of the manga, is so well-developed. I like that his arc is an emotionally driven coming-of-age and not a power fantasy.

Along with the main characters, Karneval has fantastic characters across the board. There is not a single supporting character I don't love (even the ones who annoy me). None of the female characters are reduced to love interests and are all unique and interesting, which can be hard to find sometimes in anime.

It is made by a female writer, which is always great to see, and for people who aren't really interested in romance, the anime is extremely friendship and found family driven. The found family aspect is really at the forefront of the series as Circus is not a glorified group and they don't get to have families which makes the bond between members so important.

The tone balance is amazing. In one episode, you can go on an emotional journey from laughing to crying in seconds. The plot is engaging with wild reveals and compelling mysteries to follow. The fantastical world is unique with the contrast of the dark monsters in a bright and colorful world. If you watch it in Japanese, the voice cast is so good and the soundtrack is also really good.

TL;DR it’s an interesting story with amazing characters to whom you will get attached.

Summary:

The Taira clan, also known as the Heike, holds immense authority over Japan. When a young girl, gifted with an odd eye that allows her to see the future, foolishly disrespects the clan, her father pays the price of her crime with his life. Soon after, as fate would have it, Taira no Shigemori—the eldest son of the clan leader—stumbles upon the same unfortunate girl, who now calls herself "Biwa." Biwa informs him that the downfall of the Heike is imminent. After learning of the great injustice Biwa suffered at the Heike's hands, Shigemori vows to take her in and care for her rather than let her be killed.

In an era of rising military tension, the Heike are in the midst of a cunning struggle for power, and bloodstained war is on the horizon. Shigemori, whose eyes allow him to see spirits of the dead, is both anxious and hopeful to prevent his clan's demise. Biwa, however, is reluctant to reveal the future to him and must adapt to her new life filled with both happiness and sorrow in this pivotal chapter in Japanese history.

Propaganda:

It’s based on historical events, so one can already know the ending before watching it, sort of like the main character Biwa. But seeing those events, getting attached to the characters as they have both fun, simple moments and difficult, painful moments and seeing the humanity in the characters and watching them grow up with the underlying promise that things won’t go well for them, and accepting that… themes of impermanence and grief… but also the art style is unique and bright and the music is great and fits the scenes, and I highly recommend watching this if you haven’t already !! It’s only 11 episodes!
