What if when the river person said "beware the man who speaks in hands" they meant like. be aware of him. Since no one is. So being aware of him would make him happy.
Framing him as a threat and a dangerous being that you should fear but no actually. Hes a nice guy that no one is aware of. You seem to like making people happy. I've heard of this one guy who would love someone to know him

If you completely removed Sans's impact on society and just focused on how he is in the game, with no prior knowledge of him, he's seriously such an interesting character. Despite everything, he still is! And he's still one of my favorite characters!
The first time you meet this guy, he seems like a mysterious powerful character... then he makes a fart prank. Suddenly this guy is a funny skeleton guy, and you needed a couple of laughs after that Toriel fight, so this is great, this guy and his brother are great
You continue on, Sans is not only funny but he genuinely cares about his brother! It's so nice to see siblings in media that genuinely love each other!
Then you go to Grillby's with him, it's all going as usual until he mentions a talking flower, then things get a bit serious, but oh well, not for too long, see you later Sans!
You see him again with his telescope prank, you see him again taking a nap in his job, you see him again selling hot dogs, you see him again if you hang out with Papyrus just for one single joke and then he's gone again. This guy is everywhere, but everytime you see him again he makes you laugh, he's comic sans for a reason
Maybe you don't notice or maybe you do, but while Sans truly is everywhere, he's not showing any indication of a character arc, unlike everyone else. He feels more like a secondary character, not really a main character, which he's supossed to be
Then you have dinner with him, everything is a bit more calm and quiet than usual, he tells you a sweet story about a friend he made, he's not really trying to make you laugh right now. Then suddenly we get the line:
"You'be the dead where you stand"
And... oh. Oh. I guess Sans has a lot more to his character that we didn't know about, oh my god.
But he says goodbye in a very sweet way, he's still great, he's still our friend, but what the hell was that
We don't see Sans for a while, the story is starting to get more tense and serious, we're not laughing so much anymore
And suddenly we see him again, in the judgement hall. Okay. I guess this guy truly was as mysterious (maybe even powerful?) as the game made us believe when we first see him. This scene is so well executed, and it really feels like Sans's character was leading up to a scene like this, and it's surprising but satisfying to see. Still, you wonder, is that all Sans offers in this story? It still feels incomplete
The rest of the neutral and pacifist route happens, and Sans continues to be a fun and great friend. When he's a lost soul however, he says some weird things, but maybe you don't give it much thought
Well, the game ends, and Sans was such a fun and cool character, wasn't he? What a great game-
Then you find about the No Mercy route
Also he has a lab
Who is this Gaster guy
I've heard there is this other game called Deltarune

Rouxls is Hiding Something Big: A Deltarune Theory
Tumblr media
FORENOTE- For some needed context, it may help reading my previous Deltarune theory here for important details that I will cover in this post. (My previous theory provides notable evidence on why Gaster is indeed the “Knight” figure talked about by multiple characters in Deltarune.)
Now, this is going to sound crazy. But after much time of poring over and analyzing Deltarune, I have come to a conclusion. One that I’ve been convinced of for awhile now. Something that’s been lying right under all of our noses without many of us even realizing it. We have all been bamboozled. Hoodwinked. Tricked. Why, you may ask?
Because the comically stupid and inept Duke of Puzzles is actually... not an idiot. No, he’s the complete opposite. He is a downright mastermind.
As collective players, we are all falling into the same trap once again. Putting faith into a character’s preconceived personality !
Tumblr media
When their true personality turns out the complete opposite of what we expected...
Tumblr media
It is here, my evidence for this claim begins—and we delve into the true identity of Rouxls Kaard. Buckle up everyone, cause this one’s gonna be a fun ride. 👀
So, to spill the beans up front, and get it over with. I believe Rouxls Kaards identity... is none other than W.D. Gaster in disguise.
Now. I didn’t immediately become invested in this theory—I was skeptical at first like everyone else. But, once I began examining Deltarune and all of its characters a bit closer...things weren’t exactly adding up about the Duke of Puzzles.
Point #1: Anagrams
I initially began to become suspicious of Rouxls Kaard because of his odd name. Sure, it is a play on the words of the term, “Rules card”. But it is spelt in such a peculiar way. If it were just simply a play on words, I think that there would be a much better way of going about spelling it rather than just jumbling a bunch of random letters together. There is a very intriguing reddit post found here that goes more into depth about his name that ties well into my theory. The thing that stood out to me in particular, is that Rouxls’s name is actually also an anagram for “A Dark Soul RX”, (with the left over RX typically being used in terms relating to doctors/medicine.) Not only is Gaster a Doctor, but he’s also always associated with darkness and the research of souls. Toby loves his anagrams—so I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if this was intentional. But it doesn’t end there.
I’ve noticed that Toby Fox has a tendency to tease certain things about his games through merch. And wouldn’t you know it—he has in fact, a particular item on fangamer of a “dark heart.” One which description describes the Angel’s Prophecy. Hm...
But let’s back on track onto my second observation, shall we?
Point #2: The Physical Resemblance to Gaster
Now, there seems to be some interesting foreshadowing related to inverted colors in Deltarune. Before Ralsei takes his hat off, he appears black. But once he takes his hat off, voila, his colors are inverted, and he is revealed to actually be a white goat highly resembling Asriel.
In addition, the entire Dark World is literally just. An inverted version of a normal world.
The Dark World could have hypothetically been the created world/experiment that Gaster had fallen into in the first place. After all, his experiment had to do with “darkness”, and “negative” photons--AKA the Dark Fountains, and the negatively/inverted landscapes of the Dark World.
And how does Rouxls Kaard appear inverted anyways? Well, he looks like THIS.
Tumblr media
He even has the strange dangling lip thing—which another character said to directly resemble Gaster, Seam, has as well:
Tumblr media
In addition, if you look at Rouxls’ text-box profile very closely, his eye colors are actually mismatched which is a rather interesting detail!
Point # 3: His Accent is Extremely put on.
I think anybody that has read any sort of Shakespearean/Old English writing, can instantly realize that Rouxls is as bad as imitating an Old English accent as a high-schooler reading Hamlet for the first time. Rouxls absolutely butchers it. He practically adds eth, and est at the end of any word he chooses, and calls the job done. What is even more interesting though, is when he gets nervous or panicked, he drops the act all together and talks normally.
Tumblr media
Point #4: He is Pretending to be Dumb; His Puzzles are Actually Impressive!
I found it intriguing how there are countless puzzle traps in all the forest areas and in the Card Castle prison that were actually very well done. You have to flip the spades, diamonds, hearts, etc to unlock doors, and open secret chests. They require a decent amount of thinking skills, and are actually competent. But who made them?? Oddly enough if you observe one of them in the forest areas, it appears that Rouxls Kaard vandalized one of the puzzles to make it harder for the player to beat it—which further implies that he actually indeed made those puzzles himself. This shows that Rouxls is much more competent than only being able to make a single box shove puzzle that is comically easy. Where else do we see a place full of plenty of rather well made puzzles + traps seen? All throughout the Core in Undertale—a place which Gaster himself created!
Point #5: Rouxls IS Aware the World is a Game--AKA DON’T FORGET TO READ NPC DIALOGUE FOLKS!
I think it is well aware by now that Rouxls likely wants us as the players to underestimate him--and deem him a fool so we wouldn’t bat an eye at what he’s actually up to. But the most biggest give away to this is something that I have surprisingly seen no one mention at all. And oh boy, it is the most damning evidence that Rouxls is no idiot to be trifled with.
To the left of Seam’s shop, there can be found a little group of former puzzle-makers that used to live at Card Castle, until they were fired and replaced with Rouxls Kaard. They are now all out of a job, and are just barely scraping by since the Spade King didn’t give them any severance pay. However, Rouxls Kaard offered them a way to get money--by selling the tutorials he made.
These tutorials go over TP, stats, information about Susie, Ralsei,  and Kris. Rouxls Kaard has never once met any of the players yet--and he knows everything about them. He knows about stats. He knows the world is a game.
HOW??
In addition, when you talk to Rouxls in his shop, he calls you three the Heroes of Legend. He is well aware of the Angel’s Prophecy. He knows.
Whenever any character in the world of Undertale & Deltarune knows that the world is a game, it is an instant red-flag. It goes to show that they know much more than they let on. Flowey and Sans are big examples of this in Undertale. Pure hearted, dorky idiots that we trust earlier in the game--but wind up seeing the real side of them later on.
...So why should we treat Rouxls any differently?
Point #6: The “Control Crown”
Something that I immediately thought was kind of weird, was the fact that Rouxls Kaard was able to control the K. Round with a “Control Crown” device. If he is so stupid, how was he able to create a full on mechanical device that can brainwash a life-form into being violent/cause it to triple in size?! That is genius material right there!
But things start to take on a much darker side when you begin to look at the subtext of this realization, which I will get to in a moment...
First of all, Seam claimed these exact words.
Tumblr media
The remaining king was the Spade King-- as the King of Hearts, Diamonds, and Clubs are seen to be locked up in the Dungeon. Therefore, the Spade King put the Knight, and his strange son into power. IF it were the Spade King in power, the dialogue box WOULD have said “himself”. Therefore, the Knight, and his strange son were put in place to control the kingdom. And who are they?
Gaster/Rouxls Kaard, and Lancer.
Evidence to back this up:
Lancer calls Rouxls his “Lesser Dad”. And Rouxls calls Lancer, his Strange little darling/son.
The Spade King is not in charge. During his boss-fight, he states that he obeys the word of the Knight.
If you observe more of Lancer’s dialogue in the scene right before the gang enters Card Castle, he states that his dad, (Spade King), recently forced his troops to listen to Lancer instead. Therefore, Lancer is by all respects actually second in command to the Knight.
One of Rouxls main interests is...Lawmaking. Even though he is just supposedly an innocent Duke of Puzzles.
Another one of Rouxls main interests is...Cages, and long strolls in the dungeon...
There are innocent puzzle-makers locked up in the Prison who are terrified--they were arrested for the simple act of making a puzzle without a license. HM, I wonder who could have possibly locked them up? *Wink wink nudge nudge*
And what ties this all together, is perhaps the most obscure, tiniest detail that no one would have likely observed on a first play-through. If you go to the first floor of Card Castle and click the description tablet next to the elevator to the Prison, it claims that the Prison used to just be a Basement Which Just Happened to Have a Lot of Cages. This is backed up by the caged animals in the basement, who say that they miss the “good old days” when they used to be the only ones there in cages, and not a bunch of people behind bars.
In summary, Rouxls is locking up a bunch of innocent people, and playing nice to our faces. He IS the knight. And he is not to be underestimated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Point #7: Rouxls’ Plan is Already Set in Place
The part where this theory gets a little dark, ties back to my mentioning of the control crown earlier.
If you observe the throne room, it looks like it was recently torn apart in a sort of...conflict.
Tumblr media
Why was the Spade King the only king left un-caged to begin with? Why wasn’t he locked up too?
Well...Rouxls Kaard needed someone to put him in charge. But not only that—he needed a scapegoat. Someone to blame. Someone to be “The Bad Guy” for the Heroes to fight.
The Spade King...is actually innocent. He is obeying the Knight, because he is being controlled by a Control Crown. The throne room is in ruins because the Spade King likely fought against this at first, but Rouxls won and successfully put the Spade King under his command. I thought it was strange how the King was so...violent. So irredeemably evil, and even murderous toward his own son Lancer. Yes, it could be argued that this is indeed his true personality, that he is a complete, abusive jerk. But, the whole ending battle of Deltarune chapter 1 feels so...set up in a way? It feels so starkly good vs evil, black and white. Almost like a play.
And oh boy. I think I was onto something.
If you pay close attention to the fight with the Spade King, there is a brief moment at the beginning where he is completely shrouded in shadow. Except. For. His. Crown. It glows stark white in comparison to himself. Like a Chekov’s Gun if you will.
And even more interesting, in the supposed good/pacifist ending, the Spade King is locked up in Prison, the other three kings are still locked up in cages, everyone else is freed, and Rouxls and Lancer now have full control of the kingdom...
Guys. We just played right into Gaster’s hands.
Point #8: Seam Knows that Rouxls is the Knight...
The final observation that genuinely makes me convinced in this theory, is a small detail I noticed at the end of the Pacifist run of Deltarune. Once you have beaten the game, and all of the prisoners are freed, everyone comes to celebrate at Card Castle for your victory. Everyone, except for Seam. That is because Seam knows what the “Strange Knight” did to Jevil. He knows who the Strange Knight is. And he knows what the Knight’s true intentions are.
Point #9: Extra Tidbits I noticed:
When compared to the other denizens of card castle, Rouxls seems out of place. He is the one vaguely humanoid character among a bunch of card and chess themed Darkners.
His puzzle is... too easy.
Rouxls is oddly excited about overthrowing the king/taking his place.
Rouxls is well versed in calligraphy of all things. (Relation to fonts + letters.)
Rouxls “sparkles” have an odd resemblance to the shining save states...?
He makes pop culture references, such as ones seen here and here. Could just be random throwaway jokes, but often times more “aware” characters such as Sans and Papyrus are keen on breaking the fourth wall at times/making references to relate with the audience.
His hair looks strangely out of place. Especially the hairline which is really receded to an unnatural degree on the left side. It’s a wig guys...
He gets a suspiciously new position for no reason at all. In any normal situation, he would be extremely unqualified for it if he were as stupid as he makes himself out to be.
Rouxls is literally wearing armor, akin to a medieval knights.
If you pay close attention, Rouxls has a few very subtle similar speech patterns to Gaster. They both occasionally repeat words twice. They both use the words wonderful and truly a lot, etc.
When Kris and the gang beat the K. Round, Rouxls said it was just to test their abilities.
Rouxls theme has leitmotifs from Gaster’s theme.
End of discussion. Deltarune’s finale is legit going to be Gaster getting his wig snatched.

INTERVIEW WITH A FANFIC AUTHOR TAG!
(whoa that's in all caps)
this game was originally posted by @/goldenavenger02. i was tagged by @a-conveniently-shaped-lamp! ^w^ thank you!! boy was i surprised when i saw this but it was so nice to see everyone else's responses!!
1. Your favorite fic that you’ve written (or just one you want to give a shout out to).
i think that my fics with chara and gaster are some of my favorites... that stupid one about gaster advertisements i wrote at like midnight (IT'S NOT A FIC IT'S NOT)... that one where i channeled how i couldn't write... i love writing other characters but chara and gaster are very reassuring in the sense that i've got their voice, their motivations, their little quirks and relationship all set!
2. Your favorite fic title that you’ve come up with.
i don't actually come up with fic titles!! it sounds like lots of fun but... wait... wait maybe i should do that it would make me look more official
3. How do you get inspiration to write?
'this is My Favorite Character and My Other Favorite Character. i think they should talk!! combining their endearing traits and underlying repressed feelings about the past they share, stroked with a deft hand, will make a wonderful- wait here's Another Favorite Character and Another Favorite Character!' this is how i ended up with that thunderstorm idea about every single deltarune character i like living in the same house (also not a fic) (also not written)
4.  Your favorite genre/subgenre of fic to write.
love when characters just... hang out together. just talk to each other. also love writing about LORE and BACKSTORIES :D i will dig deep into this rabbit hole for headcanons
5.  Do you have other hobbies?
i draw digital art, and i play the viola! i also like badgering my brother about his music taste, and collecting swishy dresses, and looking longingly upon chemistry while slowly osmosing knowledge about it through class, and failing to make a strong cup of tea
6.  Pick one character to self project onto, go!
(slams table) okay specifically from deltarune i've gotta go with ralsei. but also you know... i inject my feelings into backstories and stuff
7.  Favorite genre of music.
CLASSICAL it makes me feel all ascend-y and golden inside!! also anything that comes up on the radio! i'm not very picky. i will make head amvs to anything
8.  Your favorite singer/band.
uhhhh uh uhmbhjvhbcds ckjdnj ckjdjkcdc cskc (spontaneously combusts)
10.  And finally, how has your experience in fandom been?
i thought it would be scarier? :0 the amount of stuff happening, especially after deltarune chapter 2, is kind of overwhelming, but oh my gosh people can really be so nice if you find the right ones? and... i've found the right ones :)

Note
lets say for some reason the afac tumblr blog show up what reaction ould thay have?
Like everyone from the AFAC blog?? All at once? Well we have a crossover planned but I think *everyone* going over at once would break something. So here's some hypothetical meet up responses based on what I think the characters would do. F[person] is from AFAC. C[person] is from ACAF. F for Frisk. C for Chara. This hypothetical interaction takes place post memelord. This is also assuming Frisk is a little more mellow now and not about to cause trouble immediately but still not fully "reformed" but people are hypothetically chill with them.
F. Frisk: Hello new world! It's good to be here! I wonder what other me is like this time!? I hope they're nice! I bet they're nice!
C. Frisk (appearing in front of them): What are you and why do you look like me but alive and so... sunshiny...
F. Frisk: ooo you're a ghost?? So you died? I'm so sorry! But how does it feel? Is it weird being a ghost? Are you doing ok? Did you ever think about becoming a Skeleton monster? My friend Chara was a ghost and then they became a Skeleton monster! Maybe you can do that!!
C Frisk: (sarcastically) ooo you're human?? So you're alive? I'm so sorry! But how does it feel? Is it weird being made of flesh? Are you doing ok? Did you ever think about dying? Did you consider eating a pie of buttercups?This is you. This is how you sound. Do you think before you speak?
F. Frisk: Oh.... so it's that kind of world, huh? One where I'm in Chara's place and Chara is in my place? Kinda... swapped or something?
C.Frisk: What are you talking about?
F. Frisk: I don't think I can tell you because spoilers, but just know everything will be ok! It'll all work out! Oh! And if Chara makes you a strawberry ghost cake, you should eat it because they worked really hard on it!
C. Frisk: thanks???
***
F. Chara: You're alive? Ok... [thinking] (I wonder if it's like that one time or something else... awe man, I hope I wasn't rude just now. I would find that very rude and make a sarcastic comment. I hope they are not as like me as they look... for multiple reasons)
C. Chara: Um well, greetings. Welcome to this world? [Looks at the Frisks, then looks back at F. Chara] So, your Frisk is alive but you are a Skeleton and you were surprised that I was alive. I'm just guessing here, but I think maybe you're like switched with Frisk or something?
F. Chara [relieved]: or something eh heh...
C. Chara: judging by the fact that you're a Skeleton and not trying to um... hurt people I'm guessing you've gone through some character arcs and now you're cool? Please be cool. My Frisk just did this um... possession thing?? But there were like memes or something and a rainbow dance??? And it was cool but also weird. You're not going to do that here, right? (Though I guess you can't because you're not a ghost anymore... )
F. Chara [cringing from their past]: no. I promise to be good.
C. Chara: oh! Ok cool! We're cool then! Would you... like to see my chocolate stash? It's all magic chocolate, so you shouldn't have a problem with it.
F. Chara [finally relaxing into themselves]: is that even a question? =)
C. Chara: =)
***
F. Papyrus: Greetings! I am the Great Papyrus! You also Look like Papyrus! Is that true? Are you another Papyrus?
C. Papyrus: i am. though maybe not as great. you look good Papyrus. you seem happy.
F. Papyrus: I am! Lots of good things have happened to me in my world! I made lots of friends! I have a boyfriend! I am captain of the royal guard!
C. Papyrus: is that so? sounds nice! you've really got it figured out, huh? i'm happy for you. [He is sincere, but a little sadness creeps in]
F. Papyrus: Thank you Papyrus! But um... are you doing ok? I know I, the Great Papyrus can go with very little sleep sometimes, but you seem like you have gone a very long time with very little sleep. I am sure, as Papyrus, you can handle it. But even Papyrus's need rest sometimes.
C. Papyrus: you know me too well, Papyrus. i do have trouble sleeping at night sometimes. but i try to make up for it by napping.
F. Papyrus: Egad! A Papyrus, Napping! It's worse than I feared! You, Papyrus, and I, Papyrus are going off to have a "self care day"! Literally because we are caring for our "selves"! Nyeh heh heh!
C. Papyrus: good one, Papyrus. ok. you know what, yes. i will take you up on that "self" care day.
F. Papyrus: That's the spirit, Papyrus! You are looking better already! Nyeh heh heh! [F. Papyrus scoops C. Papyrus up and runs off]
***
C. Sans: There they go... Looks like fun! Do you wanna do that too?
F. Sans: nah. let's just... hang out for a sec. so, you're me, huh? i heard there was a lot of us out there- many much Sansi. how do you feel about that? knowing that there are so many other versions of "you?" not knowing which one is the "real" you. realizing you might not be the best version of "you." that you could even be one of the worst-
C. Sans: Hold on there, pal. Your spiraling in negativity. This is also "me" you're talking about, you know? You're going to hurt my feelings.
F. Sans: oh! um... sorry. i didn't mean it like that. it's just weird to think about i guess.
C. Sans: It's ok, Buddy. I'm thinking maybe you have your reasons for thinking like that. Some bad things that happened in the past, like what happened to my brother. He gets like this sometimes. I will tell you what I tell him: Sometimes bad thoughts come because of what happened and that's ok- normal even. Having bad thoughts doesn't make you a bad person. Just don't dwell on those thoughts too long. When you realize you are having bad thoughts you should take a step back and examine them. Then shoo them away with thoughts about things you like: your brother, for example.
F Sans: that's... really good advice. thanks, me.
C Sans: No problemo, amigo. We're both pretty Sansational after all!
F Sans: eeyyyy! [Finger guns]
C Sans: Eeyyy! [Finger guns]
***
F Gaster: I have seen many Gasters from my time in the void (and one in person). They varied vastly in form and personality. You however, look a lot like me except...
C Gaster: i am a ghost in a cloak? yes... i see your Hermann is like this as well. so you experimented on your own wife?
F Gaster: Did you have to say it like that? I was desperate!
C Gaster (in a more informal accent): relax, mate. i was only jokin'. i would do the same thin' in your place. ( i mean i am you after all, ain't i?) i already forgave my wife for what she did to me, so i'm not about to give ya a 'ard time. it must've been rough, imagining livin' without her. you did what made sense, even if it didn't make sense. does that make sense?
F Gaster: um...
C Gaster: brilliant! how about i make you some orange tea? i know i like that.
F Gaster: I did, but I had a rather unfortunate accident involving said tea, and I haven't liked it very much since.
C Gaster: let me guess, piranhas?
F Gaster: How did you know??
C Gaster [nods sagely]: my Hermann had the same exact problem not too long ago, except our piranhas are fond of lemons. hate oranges though. maybe you should try orange tea again, if you are going to be staying a while- just in case.
F Gaster [thinking of the lemonade he had earlier]: Yes ok, let's try it then.
C Gaster: Great! you can give me your insight on my latest scifi idea! i'm thinking it will be a buddy comedy about this one guy and his doppelganger from another universe and their hilarious hijinks and misadventures!
F Gaster [nervously]: Greeeaaat...
***
F Hermann: Ok, Ok, So you're like me, but like a science nerd like mí amore, sí?
C Hermann: Cierto. I guess you are an author/ comedian like my husband? However... he writes scifi. If I was an author, my preferred genre to write would be...
F Hermann: ;3
C Herman: Mira a tú cara! It is that, isn't it?!
F Herman: ;3
C Herman: nice. Podemos leer eso? -3- you did bring some of your books, didn't you?
F Hermann: I thought you would never ask. I have a few of my favorites in my phone's box .
C Hermann: vamos a mí cuarto. Just so we can talk about it without...
F Hermann: of course. Let's go.
***
[I hope my spanish was good. That's all I will do for now. It was a lot of writing, but it was fun]

Bark at the Moon Chapter 9: Setup and Punchline
<Previous / Next>
Or read on my Ao3>
Rating, Setting: Gen, Pre-canon
Chapter Warnings: None
Chapter Summary: Terrorizing Snowdin is fun enough, but Flowey wants more--where's Papyrus in all of this...?
Flowey suppressed a giggle as he hid beneath the lowest branches of a pine. Two monsters--a purple deer and a double-eared fox--were hiking just outside Snowdin. Idiots. Didn't they know there was a beast running loose?!
Flowey's smile turned jagged. There was a crack, and plumes of snow burst around the hapless monsters. Withdrawing his vines, he sent them running with a shower of pellets, delighting in their screams. He'd gotten bored of killing, but instilling fear in people was still fun and he had the perfect scapegoat.
Well, more like scape-dragon. His little rumor had done the trick. Even if he couldn't get Sans to attack, the townsfolk were so used to nothing happening it was easy to whip them into a panic. A prod here, a nudge there, a hail of bullets in between, and all of Snowdin had been buzzing within a week. He'd given it another just to really let it set in--and then let his pet go.
Flowey hadn't actually seen Sans in a while now, though he'd noticed his tracks around town and heard him howling at night. To think the toughest opponent he'd ever faced could be reduced to hiding in the shadows and relying on people's trash to get by! Though... that's more or less what all of monster kind was doing... A simple fact of life wasn't the best insult. Flowey frowned, his gloating spoiled. So much for that.
His fun over for now, he left his hiding spot to check in on the latest with the Guard. They usually met around this time to discuss the day's orders now that living in Snowdin had actually become eventful. Flowey liked keeping track of just how much chaos he'd caused, so he popped up beneath another tree and eagerly listened in.
"Undyne should be here soon, right?" Doggo was saying, and there was a rustle--presumably one of the Dogi nodding.
"We're supposed to meet with her at nine sharp. I wonder what our orders will be now that we know the beast is real," Dogamy said, and Doggo growled.
"I don't like it. We can't smell it, barely anyone's seen it--and its tracks just disappear into nowhere! Maybe it did eat Sans and stole his weird... appearing without moving thing..."
Flowey stifled a laugh. How were they all so dumb?!
Dogamy sighed. "Those brothers sure were something... at least Undyne told us Papyrus is okay."
Huh. So someone knew where Papyrus was...
"I've just gotta wonder about Sans after he was so worked up... and then he got sick, and we haven't seen him since. I hope he hasn't... you know..."
Doggo huffed. "Yeah. Damn. Oh hey--there's Greater Dog with the rest of 'em, guess it's time. Undyne's probably two steps behind 'em."
Flowey ducked a little closer to the ground to see better. He could hear the clanking of armor as Greater and Lesser Dogs trotted up with Dogaressa in tow. All the dogs shuffled around each other happily, sniffing and yipping; Flowey gagged as the Dogi kissed each other sloppily. Then someone started the morning howl, and they collectively threw their heads back to cry, their hot breath sending plumes of vapor into the chilled air.
Flowey found it all incredibly dumb.
Metal clanking rose over their voices, and their howls died away as they turned to salute their captain. She returned the gesture as she surveyed her troops, and sighed. She looked troubled.
"Anything to report before I begin?"
"No ma'am," Dogaressa replied firmly, "to our knowledge, there have been no further incidents. What are our orders for the day?"
Undyne nodded. "Right. We need to see if we can capture this... creature. It's clearly not a human, which means it has to be a monster somehow, so I don't want anyone hurting it. Whoever they are WON'T escape justice. Understand?"
"Yes ma'am!" they chorused.
"Good. Now, if it's scavenging from people's trash... that's gotta mean it's hungry."
"I can relate," Doggo murmured wryly, and Dogamy elbowed him.
"Ahem," Undyne growled, then continued. "What I was saying was, we might be able to lure it out with food. Today, I want everyone to scout out places that look promising--where there's been a lot of tracks, places that naturally make escape difficult. We're NOT letting this thing get away."
Flowey quietly scoffed--good luck with that plan. Sans wouldn't be found if he didn't want to be, and he couldn't be caught so easily either. He would know--he'd had to keep him tied up personally at all times just to keep him from disappearing on a whim. This would be hilarious. Even more so if he messed with them the whole time. The guards broke their huddle to get to work, and Flowey followed with full intent to sabotage.
He dumped snow on the Dogi, threw a stick for Greater Dog that sent him skidding across a patch of ice, and kept pulling on Doggo's tail when he wasn't looking; Undyne was harder to mess with, but he still managed to clock her in the helmet with a big icicle. By the time the morning shift was over, he'd made a thorough nuisance of himself and was quite pleased.
"Maybe this beast is actually a ghost, and they're playing poltergeist with us," Doggo growled dejectedly during one of their breaks, and Greater Dog whined in agreement.
"We'll question the ghost cousins if we have to, but I want everyone to focus on our goal," Undyne commanded. "There's already been one incident today. Let's do everything we can to make sure there's not another. Understood?"
"Yes ma'am!"
Flowey had gotten bored of messing with them, so he left them and settled for poking around town to see what other havoc he could cause while the Guard was occupied. There wasn't much--everyone had taken to keeping their things and themselves indoors, so the most he could do was tap on windows and scratch at walls. But not being able to see the fear on his victim's faces took the fun out of it, and he grew bored of that too. He might as well wait for Undyne to get home so he could find out where Papyrus was.
He wasn't sad to exchange Snowdin's ice for Waterfall's mud, popping up in the corridor just outside Undyne's home. He'd hang out here, then maybe catch her attention as she passed by.
The wait was almost unbearable, but he finally heard her clanking down the passage and wriggled with excitement. Finally, he'd be able to question her--wait, where was she going? She'd passed by and continued down the hall. Flowey lowered a brow, and ducked down to follow her. At one point he overshot--she'd stopped somewhere behind him, at a cleft in the rock walls that wasn't really a path. She sprang up, and he burrowed as fast as he could to catch up before he lost sight of her completely.
He came out in time to see her finish vaulting up the walls and frowned. It could take him hours to find a route through the rock... but he didn't want to keep sitting around. He wanted--needed--to know what Undyne was doing, because this pathway was new. He grit his teeth, and sent out his roots to feel for weak points in the rock.
He finally emerged on a landing some twenty feet above the spot he'd left, and muddy boot prints confirmed this was where Undyne had come through. He peered down the corridor they led into, and cautiously made his way forward. There wouldn't be so many places to hide here--but not far from the exit, he found a nook between a few stalagmites and hung back, listening as Undyne spoke.
"Yeah, sorry about that. There's just... a lot going on with this investigation. Nothing serious, don't worry! But it's got the Guard all worked up and someone's gotta keep 'em on task, y'know?"
"Of course!" Papyrus replied.
Flowey frowned. Papyrus was way out here? Why?!
"Are you sure I can't help yet?"
"No, we can handle it," Undyne replied firmly. "We're close to a breakthrough, I can feel it!"
He heard Papyrus huff. "I'm sure your investigation would be over instantly if I helped, but fine... Anyway! You wanted a sparring session tonight!"
"YEAH! Gotta stay sharp, especially now that there's an active threat. Plus, you're perfect for helping me against--" Undyne cut herself off.
"Against anything!" Papyrus supplied.
"Yeah," Undyne agreed. "Alright, let's get into positions... and, whenever you're ready!"
Flowey heard the familiar ping of a blue attack, and Undyne was already laughing eagerly.
"Right off the bat! Hell yeah, bring it ON!"
Flowey listened to them clash, wishing there was some way to watch--but he hadn't found any more weak points in the surrounding rock. Drilling straight through would take forever--they'd be done by then. So he sat back and listened, and flinched at the hum of a 'special attack'. Flowey shook his head. 'Gaster Blaster' was a cooler name than that, but he never could get Papyrus to use it.
"Hah! You're hardly TRYING!" Undyne taunted as she undoubtedly summoned a ton of spears. "Now, dodge THIS!"
He could almost picture Papyrus darting around each crashing spear--but the sounds he heard didn't match. They were scratchy, clicky, came too close together to make sense with his mental image. Flowey furrowed his brow. What the heck was Papyrus doing? Walking on bone stilts?
A raspy yelp startled him from his thoughts.
"Oh geez, sorry!" Undyne called. "Are you okay?"
More clicking sounds, and Papyrus cleared his throat. "Yes! I was simply startled by that arrangement, that's all! It was very good!"
"Fuhuhuhu, thanks! I based it on a thing Alphys showed me--I'm gonna surprise the humans by using their own tactics against them!"
"Clever! It certainly caught me off guard! But soon! I'll be on the Guard! Nyeh heh heh heh heh!"
Undyne burst out laughing. "Not so fast! You gotta get through me first, punk! Come on! Prove you've got what it takes!"
Their sparring match began anew, and Flowey continued to eavesdrop. Papyrus seemed to be using his special attack more often than usual--maybe he was getting over thinking he had to 'save it' to keep it special. But... oddly... it sounded like Undyne was holding back? For all her boasting, he could hear it--she wasn't using as many spears as she usually did.
Papyrus confirmed it. "Hmph! You tell me to go all out! But you! You're holding back on me! You think I can't take it?"
"No!"
Papyrus gave an offended gasp. "You don't?!"
"No! That's not what I meant!" Undyne retorted. "I meant 'no' I think you can! I just! Don't--I don't feel like it! Ngaaaah!"
Well, that sounded like the usual number of spears.
"See! I knew you could do better!" Papyrus cheered when the salvo was over. "I even got hit a few times! But this battle isn't over yet!"
"... I dunno, Papyrus. I don't wanna hurt you anymore."
A huff. "You keep saying that! Or things like it! I know you're a very strong monster--you're the Captain! But! You seem to be afraid of everyone else hurting me too, and though it's true I don't wish to be seen, that is not the same... as being able to handle myself in battle! Nyeh!"
Undyne grunted, apparently taken off-guard by his attack. Flowey pondered his words--he didn't want to be seen? He was Papyrus, he always wanted to be seen...
"That's not it!" Undyne grunted. "It's--attacking you right now... feels like attacking a puppy!"
There was a long pause as the battle ground to a halt, but Papyrus finally spoke.
"... I see."
"No, I mean--it's just--you're already so nice! And then, everything that's happened getting you down--I dunno, it doesn't feel fair anymore."
"Our fights are very fair, Undyne! Perhaps the most fair! I am not, despite appearances, a puppy, but a very capable and dedicated warrior!"
Despite appearances!? Flowey's mind raced. If he was right--no, no, he needed to see. He hoped this little chat would wrap up soon, it was getting in the way!
Undyne sighed heavily. "I know, but... Listen, forget I said anything. You're a great fighter. There's just been a bunch of junk that doesn't make sense lately. Let's head home and get dinner, that'll clear both our heads."
"... Okay. I'm sure whatever feelings you're struggling with will be subdued by punching vegetables!"
"Yeah! Need any help packing up?"
"No, I can manage!"
Flowey cheered internally, then ducked back and waited. He could hear Undyne's armor clanging as she approached, and the rustling as Papyrus gathered up whatever stuff he had. And then, more clicking, a steady rhythm against the cavern floor. Flowey practically vibrated with excitement as it grew louder, nearer. The hall darkened briefly as Undyne filled the entrance then passed, and then it darkened again--though not as much, and Flowey kept his eyes riveted to the opening.
Oh.
OH.
There it was. Flowey watched, tucked in his corner, as a tall skeletal creature walked by with an easy grace, its slender claws clicking on the stone. It carried its long head high, with bright orange eye lights reflecting on the corridor walls. A red scarf was draped around its neck, some sort of brightly patterned sash or skirt wrapped around its hips, and a light satchel was slung from its tall dorsal spines. A long, whiplike tail trailed behind, flicking idly as it walked.
Flowey almost couldn't believe his eyes as he passed by, but there was no mistake. It was so familiar, but different. No wonder Sans hadn't been bothered by threats of Papyrus finding out what he was... because he was like that too. They were both freaks who didn't want anyone finding out. A wide grin spread on Flowey's face, and he ducked out to go somewhere private--somewhere he could laugh freely.
Oh, this was all too perfect! He had to do something with this--and already had the groundwork laid out. Now, to figure out just how to use it...

Okay I Have a Title This Time You Ready? Hear Me Out: Shenani-wings (Badum-tish!)
Heard you hurt your back and legs while trying to make the pattern for that cool sounding 50s dress you were talking about (at least, I think that’s what “drafting the pattern” means; I sewed a pillow shut once, I’m sure you can tell), so I decided to post this. Hope it makes you feel a little better!
Guess who’s back? It’s me, Yours The Author, coming to you with another fanfiction and something of a request of my own. I’ll state my request here so you can make a decision before the story begins: I don’t have a Tumblr, but I do have a fanfiction.net account that I’m fairly active on. Only if it’s okay with you, I would like to ask permission to post this story and the previous one I submitted on my account, with credit to you for the characters and AUs, of course (if you have a title in mind for that first fic, I’d be more than willing to hear it, because otherwise it would take me a while to come up with one of my own). If you’d rather I didn’t, that’s perfectly fine! I’m more than satisfied being featured on your Tumblr, so I won’t fret if you say no. Anyway, the fanfiction. Yes.
I don’t know where chapter two of the main story will start—right where we ended the first? Sometime/distance later? Who knows? —but this scenario of shenanigans with wings (get it? Get it?) popped into my mind one morning as I was slowly preparing to get up for the day, and I’d like to give it a shot. Let me know what you think! It’s a little more comedic than my last one, but I guess I just tend to default to comedy sometimes; hope that’s okay!
Trigger Warning (if it can be called that): mild action, awkward socializing, and a blatant Looney Tunes reference.
***
Shenani-wings
It was awkwardly silent as Emmibee and Gaster stood in the elevator that went from New Home to The Core. Gaster had watched her quietly as she looked with awe at the Capital’s city scape around the corner from Asgore’s house, but now that they were in an enclosed space with nothing but the shiny buttons and each other to look at, he seemed very interested in those buttons.
“…Nice weather, huh?” She said. She then proceeded to stare intensely at the corner of the elevator as Gaster stared just as intensely at her.
“The weather is always the same. Also, technically, there is no weather. We’re under a mountain,” he replied.
“…Oh yeah.”
The awkwardness cut deeper.
Emmi practically leapt out of the elevator when the doors opened, Gaster following more calmly after her. She looked around, once again amazed by the world she had inserted herself into. She had played and watched play-throughs of Undertale enough times to know the basic colors of the world, but there was only so much detail that could be shown via Earthbound-style graphics.
The dark blue walls were polished enough to reflect her face when she stood a foot away, and when she reached out to touch the wall, she felt a warm, thrumming energy zing through her fingertips. The lighter blue floor was also shiny, but not slippery. The traction was great, (there was no need to worry about slipping and falling off a crosswalk and being erased from existence haha what?) and she could feel another energy, this one a bit colder, thrumming through her legs from the floor. It was bizarre and exhilarating and nerve-wracking all at once. Perhaps it was because she was technically a new SOUL, physically in the strange world she had come to love via a video game. She wanted to run, jump, fly—could she fly? She—
“If you’ve finished examining the wall, we should probably move along,” Gaster’s voice cut in impatiently.
Emmi blinked and gave an apologetic smile to the skeleton before making a “lead the way” gesture.
They continued through The Core, Gaster leading the way and keeping Emmi from wandering into the wrong rooms out of curiosity. Eventually they reached another elevator, this one leading to a path that was a gradient of blue to orange. They were approaching Hotland.
Emmi looked up and saw a tall building with a pair of glass doors leading into a room lit with a golden light. Gaster paused here. “There are people in here,” he said.
“I would hope so,” Emmi replied.
“I’d rather not deal with introducing you to everyone at the moment, so keep your head down.”
“What’s the magic word?” Gaster slowly turned and looked at her. Emmi stared back. They might have stood there for a while if Emmi hadn’t decided to let him win this round. “Please. The word was please,” she said quietly as she opened the doors and kept her eyes on the floor. Gaster followed after a second.
She would have loved to look at all lights and colors, architecture and people around her, but she was a woman of her word, so down her head stayed. Most of the monsters that were in the building must have been busy with their own thing, though, since no one seemed to call out to her or the doctor.
Then they were out of the building, and Emmi took the opportunity to whirl around and gaze up at the MTT Resort front. Like the Core, it was just like it was in the game, but also… more. The shiny gold letters above the doors glittered, as if there were lights hidden in the surface that twinkled. A humid breeze (?) rustled the bushes adorning the sides of the doors. She could hear chittering laughter coming from one of the alleys beside the building; Catty and Bratty, most likely.
Gaster cleared his throat (? Again?) and Emmi quickly snapped to attention and followed him away from the Resort, deep into Hotland. True to its name, it was hot. She wiped sweat from her forehead multiple times, and the hot steam puzzles didn’t help matters (turns out such puzzles are a lot harder to do when you can’t see all the launch platforms from above). Gaster wasn’t of much help either, but he sighed with what Emmi hoped was a bit of relief and a smidgen of pride when she landed on the other side of the final puzzle.
After wandering along the craggy orange paths for what felt like another half hour, they reached the Lab. “Air conditioning!” Emmi breathed.
Gaster glanced at her. “Only for less than a minute.”
“It’s all I need.” The doors opened, and Emmi sped walked into the cool air, taking deep, sighing breaths and smiling up at the ceiling.
“Dramatic,” Gaster muttered, shaking his head. From the corner of her eye, it looked like Gaster had a slightly amused smile on his teeth. Probably the best interaction she had had with him yet.
The first thing Emmi noticed about the Lab was how… clean everything was. There were no trash bins full of ramen noodle cups or crumpled up papers, no tables covered in anime figurines and more papers, and the big computer that she recalled Alphys using to monitor the player was gone. It almost looked empty without it all. Emmi thought to ask about it, but figured questions were probably better saved for once they reached Snowdin.
Once back outside the Lab, Gaster led her down a flight of stairs to the river. The stone floor changed from orange-y red to a deep blue, and the cooling sound of rushing water eased Emmi’s nerves in a way she hadn’t noticed she needed.
And there, as if they had been waiting for the two of them, was the Riverman (or River woman? It didn’t matter). “Tra la la. More than one new chapter is about to begin. Would you like to ride on my boat?”
“Hmm. Haven’t heard that one before,” Gaster said, more to himself than to Emmi, but he stepped onto the boat and sat on the seat directly behind the Riverperson. Emmi carefully sat opposite him, slinging off the back pack Asgore had given her and putting it under her seat. “Snowdin,” Gaster requested.
“Please,” Emmi finished, rolling her shoulders and arching her back a bit. Her wings (yes, she reminded herself for the twentieth time, she had wings now) weren’t super sensitive, but the pressure of having a relatively heavy backpack press into them for an hour felt… weird. Out of curiosity she tried to flutter her wings a bit. Nothing happened. It was like trying to tell you hand to move, the way you tell yourself what to have for breakfast: it just doesn’t work that way.
“Please and thank you. Magic words, indeed,” The Riverperson said. Suddenly, the boat rose above the surface of the water. Emmibee gasped in surprise and clung to the seat with her hands.
Gaster raised a bone brow at her. “I had assumed you knew that this happened sometimes,” he said. There was that barest trace of what Emmi could only hope was amusement.
“Seeing it happen is different from actually being there,” she explained, easing her grip.
“Tra la la. Look, it likes you.”
“What?” Emmi and Gaster turned to the front of the boat. The head of the boat was shaped like a dog/cat hybrid, and it seemed to have turned its head to smile at her. Emmi found herself rising to her feet and reaching towards it; to give it a head pat or hug, she wasn’t sure. “Aww…” she cooed. She was so focused on the doggy-kitty, she barely heard the fluttering sound behind her, like brand new sheets of cellophane flapping in the wind at high speed. She also didn’t notice Gaster looking over her shoulder with something akin to wonder.
“We are off,” The Riverperson said.
…Huh?
The boat jerked forward and bounded across the surface of the water. Emmi probably would have fallen back onto her seat under other circumstances, but the flapping sound stopped with a snap, and she looked behind her just in time to see her wings spread out like a sail before the sudden burst of air flowing by sent her flying back off of the boat. “AAAAAAA—!”
PING!
Something blue flashed in her vision and she felt a pair of hands scoop under her arms and pull her back to the boat. One second later, her face was in a warm fabric surface and there was a wheezing sound in her ear.
It was easy enough to put two and two together: her wings, acting on their own accord, went kite-mode and sent her airborne. Gaster had summoned magical hands to grab her before she went too far, and now she was in his arms. She couldn’t pinpoint what the wheezing sound was, though.
She peeked up at the skeleton and saw him staring down at her, both eyes glowing a mix of yellow and pink. The wheezing sound was coming from between his clenched teeth. Apparently, if you startled a skeleton enough, they’d start wheezing. They stared at each other for all of five seconds. Emmi broke the silence with the first thing that came to mind:
“Ehhh… What’s up, Doc?” Then she smacked her face back into Gaster’s chest to suppress her hysteric laughter.
“Tro lo lo,” the Riverperson laughed. Gaster did not seem to see the humor of the situation.
“DON’T EVER DO THAT AGAIN!” He cried with what was so obviously worry and concern, Emmi was now wheezing herself, trying to stop laughing. “DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT I’D DO IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO YOU?!”
Emmi sobered quickly at that. She looked up at him again. “What would you do?” she asked.
“…” Gaster opened his jaw, then shut it again, desperately trying to come up with something clever and witty and aloof. “…I don’t know,” he finally said. “Just… don’t do that again.”
“Okay. I’m sorry, Dr. Gaster,” Emmi replied, even though she technically hadn’t meant to do any of this.
“A bee in the hand is worth two bushes,” the Riverperson quipped.
“What does that even mean?” Gaster groaned.
“We’ve arrived. Tra la la, both of you.” The boat dropped like a rock onto the surface and Emmi yelped, clinging tightly to Gaster. She hadn’t noticed it had gotten colder until she was no longer about to fall off the boat, but looking out to the side, she saw a pretty layer of white snow covering the ground next to the river.
Gaster quickly stood, grabbed a strap of Emmi’s back pack, and got off the boat, crunching the snow underfoot. The boat got back up on its legs, turned around, and ran back the way it came.
Gaster and Emmi stood there for a few seconds. Or rather, Gaster stood. He had yet to put Emmi down, and as much Emmi would have liked to stay near his warm, beating SOUL, she knew he’d never forgive her if she let him walk into the town with her like this. “You can put me down now, doctor,” she said.
Gaster blinked and scrambled to put her down without actually throwing her tiny body onto the snow, shoving the backpack into her arms when he had accomplished this. He straightened his lab coat and cleared his throat. “Ahem. Yes. Well, my house is less than a minute away. You should probably put on your coat.”
Emma made to reach into her bag, then paused and shook her head. “I can handle it.”
“…What?”
“I can handle it for a bit. Let’s go.”
“There is literal ice on the ground.”
“I kind of like the cold.”
“Your wings could freeze off.”
“Then we should move quickly, huh?”
“…Fine.” Emmi grinned up at him, pleased she had claimed her first verbal victory. Gaster adjusted his glasses, then blinked again and forced his hands to his sides. His eyes were still glowing, though they were much more pink than yellow now. “Let’s go. We have much to discuss—”
“Um, doctor?”
“What is it?”
“Your eyes,” she gestured to his face. “You might want to—”
Gaster put his hand to his good eye and seemed to notice the pink light reflecting on his bones. He blushed and blinked rapidly until the light went away. Yep, Emmi thought. This is the man I’m going to care for along with his children for the rest of my life. So fine.
“Let’s go,” Gaster repeated, pointing down the path. “And… thank you, for… that.”
“You’re welcome, Dr. Gaster.”
***
I can’t help but feel I have a tendency to start the story way ahead of the action, which fills the beginning with unrelated details, but maybe that’s part of the charm? I wouldn’t know, I don’t get a lot of feedback these days on my stories. But anyway, yeah.
I imagine suddenly having wings, even if they’re technically nonfunctional (at this point), could present some… unique situations. Emmi’s wings flutter when she’s excited (and Gaster thinks it’s cute), so I imagine they might react to other emotions, such as sticking out when startled, drooping when sad, etc. (What’s that? Emmi’s wings are technically under her new shirt she got from Asgore? And therefore this scenario couldn’t happen? And also her wings might not be strong enough to lift her whole body like this? … Shhh…)
I don’t know if all people notice these things when looking around, but I always love to look at as much of the lights, colors, and architecture in a new place as possible: big cities and rolling valleys of trees especially. People are kind of just there, unless I’m at an anime convention; then people are put into that first group, too.
*Bites a carrot* Ehhh… What’s up, Doc? I have no idea if Emmibee would be the type to quip in a situation as sudden as the one seen here (clearly, I have been watching too much Real Time Fandub Games), but minds do weird things sometimes; something I’m all too familiar with myself. Why Looney Tunes? I don’t know, I couldn’t think of a better quote that mentions a doctor (wait, here’s one: I’m a doctor, not an escalator!) Also I like comedy. Sue me. (Please do not.)
I had to use a lot of maps of the Underground for this chapter. I kind of forgot about the steam puzzles and where each elevator went until after I saw it and I was like “Oh. Welp.” I’m not actually sure how you would solve the steam puzzles if you weren’t able to visually map out your every move. Gaster has probably done this five hundred times and knows the right way by heart (or soul, I guess), but Emmi has never seen the puzzle from this perspective, and I’d be very surprised if she had taken the time to memorize each puzzle in the game before going into the world. Even then, perspective can change a lot.
Skeleton Eye Glowing! Pink and yellow, based on the correlating emotions on Zarla’s eye color chart. Yellow usually means fear or stress (and is also Gaster’s natural color), and pink means surprise or embarrassment. Gaster becomes more embarrassed once he realizes he’s been holding Emmi like a teddy bee to himself for half a boat ride, and it takes a second for him to return to his stoic, cool-guy persona. He really does appreciate Emmi looking out for his dignity, though.
I actually loved writing the Riverperson more than I thought I would? They’re just so cryptic while also being straightforward, but in a way that I? Like? Get? And understand? It’s like they’re speaking in poetry while also screwing with their patrons, and I’m just down for that. I’m sure I don’t have to tell anyone, but the line “More than one chapter is about to begin” refers to the meta of the story’s literal next chapter beginning soon, as well as the chapter in the life of Emmi, the life of Gaster, the life of the boys, and the life of them all as a family. Also, “A bee in the hands is worth two bushes” is a play on “an apple in the hand is worth two bushes” (See Veggietales: Larry Boy and the Bad Apple [which I don’t own]), which is a play on the actual phrase “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”. Technically, this phrase means “you should be content with what you have instead of losing it all to get more”, but I’ve always read it as “a small amount of something hard to get brings more joy than a lot of somethings you could see any day of the week.“ In this instance in the story, the Riverperson is referring to the latter, and is also just commenting on how rare it is for Gaster to be holding any person, and especially a special bee that got to him through special means.
Emmibee’s favorite part of the Underground is Snowdin, “no contest”. I would assume this is not only for aesthetic reasons (who can resist a snow-covered Gyftmas village?) but also for preference reasons. Emmibee was very immediate in her response to where in the Underground she wanted to live (Snowdin), which may have been so she’d be near Gaster, but I think it would make sense if she preferred snowier places anyway. Hence, she appreciates brisk, cooler temperatures to warmer ones, though a balance is always important. Freezing cold for a short amount of time could be exhilarating. Would her wings freeze off? Dragonflies survive the winter through some means, why can’t a bee monster? (Also, the whole monster thing; weather may not be as applicable to wing safety.)
Anyway, I think that’s all of the after thoughts I have. Thank you for reading all the way to the bottom! Maybe one day I’ll write another story for this AU. It’s a lot of fun! The AU, I mean. And also writing for the AU. Anyway, I’ll see you around. Until then!
~~~
okay #1: this is ADORABLE AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH
#2: it does make me feel better!!
#3: You’re correct in that “drafting a pattern” means making one! I’m using vintage drafting instructions for a vintage dress pattern, which is very exciting.
#4: I wouldn’t mind at all if you posted your stories, as long as you link them back to my and Zarla’s blogs! I would prefer if you posted on AO3, but since you’re already active on FF that’s just fine too. Send me the link when you post them and I’ll give you a promo!
#5: As far as names go, ah.... I’m no good at names either, honestly. It depends on what you want to emphasize in the story. What do you consider the crux of that particular chapter? Seeing Emma, her relationship with her father, Wings’ conversation with ZD or his mother? Maybe family relationships in general? That might be a good angle since that was the majority of the story.
#6: This particular chapter is such an interesting take on the next leg of the story! You really captured Emmi’s excitement in being in the Underground for the first time, as well as her gentle teasing but caring attitude toward Gaster. “Yep, I’m gonna have this man’s babies.” OKAY NOT REALLY WHAT SHE SAID BUT THAT ENERGY THO
#7: I dont like to stomp on headcanons so I won’t address most of them, but I do want to comment on Emmi’s favorite place in the underground being Snowdin since that directly relates to me: My favorite place is Snowdin because it’s the only place in the Underground that truly feels like home. I actually hate the cold, haha. But the fact that the skelebros/Gaster live there, the music is lovely, and there’s Grillby’s and the librarby and gentle furry folk, it really speaks to my small-town-girl heart. Emmi’s main reason for requesting to go to Snowdin is definitely because of Gaster, but it’s a special place to me because it feels like home.
#8: The comedy is great, the fluff is great, I’m just. I love this and I love you and you do great work
Halloween Blues
Note: Happy (early) Halloween, everyone! I hope you all have a lot of candy to eat! (But not too much, hehehe!) Anyway, onto the fic!
Handplates belongs to: @zarla-s
Summary: Sam and the brothers are excited for the Halloween party that Undyne is hosting. But when an unexpected snowfall traps the citizens of Snowdin inside on the day of the party, they’re all understandably upset about it. Will Gaster be able to cheer them up?
    “*You asks Flowey if he has any suggestions for costumes. You’ve ran out of ideas already...Ehehehe...”
    “𝙰𝚗𝚍 𝚠𝚑𝚢 𝚜𝚑𝚘𝚞𝚕𝚍 𝙸 𝚌𝚊𝚛𝚎?”
    “*Because you need a Halloween costume for Undyne’s party of course!”
     Flowey had to fight back the urge to roll his eyes at this. The Human was recently invited to a Halloween party by the Captain of the Royal Guard herself. He pretended to be excited for them, but the plant couldn’t have cared less about this party. Whatever made Sam happy...
    “𝚆𝚎𝚕𝚕 𝚒𝚏 𝚢𝚘𝚞’𝚛𝚎 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚠𝚘𝚛𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚍 𝚊𝚋𝚘𝚞𝚝 𝚒𝚝, 𝚠𝚑𝚢 𝚍𝚘𝚗’𝚝 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚍𝚛𝚎𝚜𝚜 𝚞𝚙 𝚕𝚒𝚔𝚎 𝚢𝚘𝚞𝚛 𝚍𝚞𝚖𝚋 𝚜𝚌𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚒𝚜𝚝 𝚋𝚘𝚢𝚏𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚍 𝚕𝚒𝚔𝚎 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚝𝚘𝚕𝚍 𝚖𝚎 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚍𝚒𝚍 𝚕𝚊𝚜𝚝 𝙷𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚘𝚠𝚎𝚎𝚗?”
    “*Gaster didn’t want anyone to see you dressed like that apparently...”
     That was so typical of the skeleton that Flowey wasn’t even surprised by it. Hopefully Sam wouldn’t drag him along as well but knowing them, they’ve probably already made planned to even with the multiple excuses he had when they first told him about it. At least the plant was able to convince Sam to leave him at the snack table until it was time to leave. Flowey was pulled out of his thoughts by Sam giving an excited cry. He looked up to see the Human wearing an all-black outfit with attached wings and a little headband.
    “*You’ll be going as a cute little bat to the party!”
    “...𝚆𝚘𝚠, 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚕𝚘𝚘𝚔 𝚞𝚖, 𝚐𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚝, 𝚂𝚊𝚖! 𝙷𝚎𝚑𝚎𝚑𝚎, 𝚝𝚘𝚘 𝚋𝚊𝚍 𝙸 𝚍𝚘𝚗’𝚝 𝚑𝚊𝚟𝚎 𝚊 𝚌𝚘𝚜𝚝𝚞𝚖𝚎 𝚊𝚜 𝚗𝚒𝚌𝚎 𝚊𝚜 𝚢𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚜 𝚝𝚘 𝚠𝚎𝚊𝚛 𝚝𝚘 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚙𝚊𝚛𝚝𝚢!”
    “*Don’t worry! You have a costume prepared for Flowey as well!”
     Flowey’s eyes widened and he began to scream for Gaster, who had been sitting on the bed working the entire time, to help him. The skeleton gave Flowey a look before going back to working. Gaster continued to ignore the plant as he was taken away by Sam, probably to be dressed in a silly outfit picked out just for him...
~~~~~~
    “*You ask Gaster if he’s as excited for tomorrow as you are!”
     Gaster chuckled at his excited joyfriend as he listened to them ramble on about Undyne’s party happening the next day. He had originally planned on not going, but not only is Alphys going as well, but Sam just seemed so happy to have gotten invited that the scientist couldn’t say no.
     During Sam’s rambling, they were cut off by a sudden drop in temperature, causing them to shiver. The Human mumbled something about how cold it had been getting throughout the day.
    “It has been getting colder, hasn’t it? And I noticed that it’s snowing more than usual as well...Probably nothing to worry about though.”
    “*That means he’ll have let you cuddle up to him extra close tonight! Ehehehe!”
    “...Don’t push your luck, Sam.”
     The Human started pouting as they and Gaster laid down on the bed to sleep. While everyone was fast asleep however, the snow outside continued to fall with no signs of stopping at any point during the night...
(*The Next Morning...)
    “*You ask Undyne why she needs you to come over...The party doesn’t start until later...”
    “Because I uh, kinda don’t want my house to burn down before the party so I need you to help bake a few things before tonight. Grillby isn’t answering his phone and I’m definitely not going to ask Muffet!!”
    “*Don’t worry! You’ll be happy to help her out! Gaster can just bring everyone over later like planned.”
    “You better or the next time I see you, I’ll suplex you into next week!!!”
     The fish monster then hung up, leaving Sam to slowly place their phone in their dimensional box. They decided it would probably be a good idea to leave now before Undyne made good on her promise. After making sure their bat costume was alright, the Human went into the kitchen to find Gaster struggling to help Sans and Papyrus with their own costumes. Papyrus just couldn’t decide on one and Sans was too busy sleeping to actually choose. Toby and Flowey were the only ones ready and dressed up, although the plant was sulking while wearing the cute bunny ears Sam had for him. The little pup on the other hand was sitting on the kitchen floor, wagging his tail and wearing a cute hot dog costume. The poor scientist looked so exasperated that Sam wanted to just to stay home to help but instead they told him they were headed out.
    “-sigh- Alright, just be careful, Sam. I believe it snowed all night so the snow could be pretty deep outside...”
     Sam nodded and left the kitchen. Gaster was about to scold Papyrus and tell him to just choose a costume when Sam’s shrieks were suddenly heard from the living room. Everyone looked out, only to be shocked when they noticed what looked like a ton of snow crushing the poor albino. Gaster wasted no time in pulling his now shivering lover out of the pile while clearing out the snow from the house. The scientist covered Sam with a warm blanket while the brothers stared outside with confusion. They could see nothing but white everywhere.
    “DAD, HOW ARE WE GOING TO GET TO UNDYNE’S PARTY NOW?”
    “I...don’t think we’ll be going anywhere for a while, Papyrus. It’s a good thing I went to New Home the other day to buy food.”
    “*N...No party?”
     Sam looked up from their position on the couch with an upset expression on their face. Hearing Gaster say that made the Human’s SOUL clench with sadness. They were really looking forward to the party at Undyne’s but now apparently that wasn’t going to happen now. Sam desperately asked their boyfriend if he was sure there wasn’t that could be done but the skeleton stayed firm on his thinking. The Human and the brothers were saddened by this, something Gaster immediately took notice of.
     Maybe he should try cheering them up somehow...
~~~~~~
     Sam had just gotten off the phone with Undyne explaining the situation to her. She was understandably upset that they wouldn’t be able to bake or even come to the party, but the fish monster was just glad everyone in the house wasn’t hurt. The Human wondered what they and the brothers were going to do now when Gaster walked up to them.
    “Sam, I need you, Sans, and Papyrus to come into the kitchen. Oh, and don’t forget to wear your costumes.”
     The Human and the little skeletons looked at each other in confusion but complied with Gaster’s request. As soon as they entered the kitchen, they were surprised to see the place decorated with some Halloween decorations that Sam had made a while back and the table was covered in some themed sweets Sam had prepared just in case Gaster decided not to attend the party after all. Sam was speechless but they couldn’t their immediate reaction as they turned to their boyfriend with a large grin and twinkling ruby-colored eyes.
    “*He didn’t have to do all this for everyone...”
    “Well, it wasn’t like I had anything better to do-!”
     Gaster was cut off by Sam hugging him, wrapping their tiny arms around his waist. They looked up at him with an even larger grin.
    “*You thank Gaster for making this Halloween extra special.”
    “...You’re welcome, Sam.”
Note: Happy Halloween Eve once again, everyone! Sorry if it seems short, but I’m preparing for a Halloween call with my friends tomorrow! I’ll still be available but just delayed response. I hope you all enjoyed reading this fic! Thank you all so much for reading! I love all of you so much! Requests are always welcomed! Stay tuned for more.
Note
can we get dad headcanons for the sanses too??? the papyrus ones were so cute and i cant handle it!!!
Y’all are planning to kill me with these blessed asks. ~ Mod Goblin, who’s weak to Sans
Sans:
Holy crap. Him? A dad? He’s used to being an uncle for Frisk, so how hard can it be?
Further researching shows: He done goofed
He starts to stress out a little after going to classes and realizing what he’s actually in for.
When he holds his baby for the first time, it’s like all that stress never happened.
He did take care of Papyrus after all. He’s a natural at taking care of kids.
Loves to take naps with the kid whenever he can.
Definitely stay at home dad material, but he can work too. (That just means spoiling his kiddo more)
RIP him if they inherent his teleporting magic.
RIP him even more if the kiddo has high energy AND teleporting magic.
Finds out his kid is getting bullied at school? Guess which kid is coming to school with a Gaster Blaster?
Blue:
When you tell him he’s going to be a dad, he practically vibrates with excitement.
HE’S GOING TO BE A PAPA!! YOU HEAR THAT EVERYONE?!?!?! A PAPA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Literally gushes about this to anyone who’ll listening or not.
He’s so excited. He has a list of baby names and even found some of his old childhood toys to give to the kiddo.
Yeah, he’ll worry about being a good dad too, but everyone feels like this!! It’s a new challenge that he’s excited to explore with you.
When he holds his kid for the first time, he has to sit down. It’s like the wind was knocked out of his non-existing lungs. He’s just... So... Wow...
As much as he loves playing with them, he gets so gentle sometimes. Like when he’s reading to his kid or just gently rocking them to sleep.
He’s also going to be one of those parents that just will not stop talking about his kid. He’s just so excited and overjoyed!!!!!
Red:
You... You sure? Like, is the test real or...?
He’s okay with being an uncle, but a dad? A little one to call his own? He’s both scared and even wonders if he even deserves it.
Might have to be alone for a little, but he’ll tell you what is going on so he won’t scare you and he’s taking Edge with him. He just needs to sort out himself first.
He fears he’s going to have to change his entire lifestyle, fearing he HAS to become something he’s just not. Sure, changes will happen, but it’s not he’s going to change entirely.
When he comes back, he’ll have long talks with you. Though expressing his emotions is really hard for him, he knows it’s really, REALLY important this time and tries to tell you about his own fears about this.
Maybe going to parenting classes will help. Or maybe doing some research on his own. He’s still scared out of his damn mind, but he feels like he needs to face it.
When he’s finally able to hold his kid, he still can’t believe it. You can see him shaking, so you tell him to sit down with the tiny bundle.
After a moment, you hear him talking to the little bundle. Telling them everything that’s happened and how he’s been feeling, but Red is still happy that he has all the love and support to help him become better.
RIP his sleep, whether it’s the baby or his own stress-related insomnia.
Catches up on sleep whenever the kiddo naps during the day.
He’s not as bad at this as he thought, but he still makes mistakes. Such as forgetting for a moment that he’s carrying a baby and accidentally hits their head against a cabinet door. or freezer door.
Just get the kiddo a helmet, please?
When the kiddo gets older, Red is at a point where he’s finally comfortable and confident of being a dad.
Loves scaring other parents at parent-teacher meetings.
Wild:
First reaction: pure, unfiltered terror. What if he’s not ready? What if you’re not ready? What if the kid hates him? What if he messes up big time? What if-
Second reaction: Happy tears. Probably cries the most of all the Sanses (Sanss?) during the process and even after.
He’s nervous, but he’s going to try. So going to parent classes and reading on his own helps him some, but he’s really nervous.
Cries so much when he’s holding his baby the first time. Now you’re crying. Now the baby is crying. Now he’s crying that the baby is crying. It’s all a crying mess.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up staying at the hospital until both you and the baby are finally able to go home. Then that’s when he finally crashes.
He tries to follow everything he learned to the T, but when things go out of his territory, he sort of panics.
It takes him a while to learn how his child behaves, what they like, what they don’t like, etc.
Eventually, he’ll stop reading the parenting books and just raise his kid the best he can.
Absolutely cries his Soul out when his kiddo leaves for school for the first time. Please be there with him so he doesn’t try to scoop his kid and take them back home.
It’s not until the kid is a little more older that Wild finally feels confident that he’s doing something right.
Black:
He’s stunned at first, which evolves into something like a mix of excitement and fear. Not so much fear like “oh my God, what if I mess up” (though that thought is still there) he’s mostly concerned with you. Are you going to be okay? Are you sure you really want this? You’re not feeling any pain right now, right?
He has sleepless nights researching and worrying about the delivery. He knows how painful it can be for you and it’ll just tear him apart knowing he can’t really prevent the pain from happening. He’ll have to support you more than ever now and he’s okay with that.
He likes talking about names and future plans with you. Though he’d much rather focus on the present, he knows the future is just as important as well.
When he’s finally able to hold his baby, he gets so gentle and soft with them. He talks to them and it’s probably the only time you’ve heard him use baby talk.
He really didn’t want to let go of his kid when the doctors need to check them out, but he complied.
At home, he’s so fixated on the baby. He’s just so curious about them and wants to learn what goes on in their little mind.
Panics when the baby starts crying and goes down a little checklist to see what it could possibly be.
His kid WILL learn manners, so by the time they’re off to school, they will be the most polite kid in the class.
Wine:
He’s honestly really surprised. At his age, could he still be a good father?
He’s overjoyed, don’t get him wrong, but this means there’s going to be a lot of important discussions.
He can already function with only 4 hours of sleep, so during the time he’s awake, he’s researching, he’s planning ahead, he’s making sure you’re well taken cared of.
Wine is still pretty worried, don’t get him wrong. His age is starting to show and he’s worried that he may not have the patience for a baby.
He was so insulted that people could not believe he was the father and almost had to fight his way to the delivery room so he could see his child.
When he’s finally able to hold them, he has the widest smile. He’s a natural at this. He’s playing with them gently and talking to them in the softest voice...
And you, of course, are so going to be spoiled when you return home.
He hates having to play the “bad cop” when he’s disciplining his child. Or when he makes a parenting mistake, he makes his child their favorite treat as an apology.
If fact, whenever his child is upset, he’s making them their favorite treat as a way to comfort them.
You’ll catch him singing lullabies to his baby, even while they’ve been asleep for a while.
When his child is going to school for the first time, they’re definitely going to be overdressed. First impressions matter~!
Axe:
It’s his? It’s really his? Really??
He’s so overwhelmed with a variety of emotions that he starts crying and hugging you.
He really tries to participate for parenting classes, but he either has trouble remembering what was taught or he gets frustrated when things don’t make sense. But he really is trying and he wants to be a good dad, so he’ll probably be better off learning on his own.
He’ll need a lot of emotional and mental support from you, friends and family. He’ll of course take care of you too, but damn he’s worried sick over this.
He cannot believe how teeny his baby is when he holds them for the first time. And when they grab at his fingers? Here come more tears.
He’s trying so hard to be gentle with them. Going as far as putting packing peanuts at the tips of his claws.
Uncle Crooks is going to visit often, just so he can teach Axe how to cook better.
When his kid goes off to school, he’s so happy for them, until they come back saying how they were bullied for having a monster for a dad. He can show those kids how scary he can be... (he won’t do anything harmful, but loves being the weird and scary cryptid at the school) Hell, he can go as far as becoming the school staff if he really wants to.
Tuesdays are for us
It started on a warm rainy Tuesday afternoon.  Spring had moved briskly into summer and the sticky humidity of the last week had been almost unbearable.  The rain that fell was sudden but nice as it took the worst of the heat, even if the rain itself was warm.  She didn't mind the rain, the windows of the Cafe were open to let in the fresh smell of soil and damp wood.
It was well into the afternoon, lunch rush was over tables were clean and she sat at the counter with a sketchbook pencil gently scratching across the paper.  She was allowed to draw as long as the place was clean and there were no customers.
Because of the time and the rain she hadn't expected anyone, so when the bell above the door chimed cheerfully she jumped slightly quick to set aside the book and pencil as she stood to greet the guest.
Her voice, however, stuck in her throat.
Standing just inside the door was a monster.  She'd had monster customers before they were by and large friendly, but something about this man had frozen her.  It wasn't his height, though that was substantial, as monsters were just, generally taller.  It wasn't the almost alien skull he had for a head which vaguely reminded her of the classic grey aliens from bad scifi movies. It wasn't even his clothing which even to her untrained eye seemed expensive and comfortable, if damp.  No, all these factors alone wouldn't have made her bat an eye  but all of it, combined with the mildly frustrated look on his face and the dripping soggy newspaper in his hands.  He looked elegant.  She wouldn't go so far as to say beautiful, mostly because she was pretty sure he was a man.  But elegant was perfect.
Even the way he batted at his jacket trying to get some water off was smooth, not a single wasted motion.  So smooth she watched a long moment before coming back to herself and grabbing a towel hurrying around the counter towards him.
"That rain came out of nowhere huh?" She said cheerfully as she offered the towel.  He grunted something akin to agreement before taking the towel with a thank you and rubbing his head with the towel before looking at her fully studying a long moment before nodding
“Yes, it did… Ah, I seem to have run in here without thinking, As the door wasn’t locked, I trust you’re open?” He said his words were formal and smooth like his voice, and the way he moved.  Wow, this guy was like, a prince or something just well. Sort of how she might imagine a prince anyway, the dignity of his speech, the gliding elegance of his movements… wow
“Huh?  Oh! Yes, yes we are! Please, um please have a seat, would you like a coffee? Maybe some tea?” she asked quickly, blushing, ok time to get out of her own head and remember she was actually at work.  She scurried behind the counter laughing sheepishly
“First ones on the house, whatever you like.” she said brightly as she watched the man take a seat by the window his head turned to watch the quiet rain outside.
“Tea, with honey and a bit of milk please,” he said simply, turning his attention to his soggy newspaper and sighing as the paper pretty much disintegrated between his fingers.  As the water boiled she made her way over gathering the remains of his paper and wiping down the table.  He watched silently as she bustled about soon returning with a fresh paper.
“The boss makes sure we carry all the major daily papers for people who might want to catch up.” she explained with a smile as he looked at her questioningly he seemed satisfied by the explanation before scanning the front page his expression twisting slightly, no surprise the headline was another sensational byline about Monster rights and the importance of being human and how that was true personhood and … politics and… blah it made her head hurt.  She wasn’t a political person and tended to avoid it but obviously it wasn’t something monsters could avoid.
“So out doing something nice before you got drenched?” she asked warmly hoping her friendly question might take his mind off the headline.  She felt bad, maybe if she were more clever she could contribute in a more meaningful way but as it was she only had her opinion and people either agreed or didn’t.
It was simple at least, monsters were people and deserved the same rights as everyone else.
Period.
Caveats for regulating magic and all that stuff?  It was beyond her pay grade as she liked to say but the basic point was simple as far as she was concerned.
“Just checking in a couple businesses.” the monster responded sipping his tea and pausing
“This…” he started to say though the surprise was clear on his face. She smiled pleased, because there was no disgust with the surprise, she hoped that meant he liked it.
“It’s my own blend, I find it calming.” she said honestly he nodded smiling in mild amusement, or maybe just quiet pleasure she wasn’t really sure.
And that was that.
A quiet rainy afternoon led to him coming to the little cafe once a week, always Tuesday, always around mid afternoon after lunch rush but before people started coming in for school pick up and getting off work.
She learned a lot about him in that time.  His name was A.K. Serif, but she learned with a little nudging that his birth name was Gaster, he simply preferred A.K. and when he’d explained that she’d been happy enough to call him that.
She learned he owned quite a few businesses in town and had two younger brothers he’d raised practically by himself.  One brother was shorter and more round in his figure, not fat but fuller.  Though the idea of a skeleton filling out his clothes kind of boggled her mind she relied on the writers out, Magic.  His other brother and the youngest was very tall and skinny, he was rather cheerful and had greeted her in a wonderfully friendly way when he’d had to come get A.K. for something about trouble with business.
A.K. being ever the gentleman had excused himself politely and she for her part had told him she hoped his business worked out in his favor.  She had intended that to be a friendly gesture but weirdly he’d twitched slightly and his brother had looked at him a long moment before they had left.
After that she avoided ever mentioning his work.
She enjoyed their conversations.  A.K. was very smart, not just intelligent but clever he could apply so much of what he knew.  And he was also interested in new things.  The second time he’d come to the Cafe they had talked about how one learned to make their own blends of tea.  How she had started because she had seen it in a movie and thought it was amazing, and then their conversion had veered to films, he was kind of surprised to learn there were animated films that were just as good as live action films.
This of course had resulted in her loaning him a couple films, he was honest that they weren’t his favourite but they weren’t bad and he could watch more if it came up ever.
Discovering his more playful side had been so wonderful, he had come in looking odd and she had worried maybe something was wrong maybe he’d had trouble at work?  Despite her personal plan to not mention it again she’d been about to ask when Gasters face had twisted into… a grin.  It was slightly awkward, not helped by the scar that ran down one side of his face crooking his top lip oddly as he tried to suppress his mirth.  She supposed to someone else it might have even seemed creepy but his fight to control his laughter had been so funny she ended up laughing, which of course had been enough to set him off.  She had been clutching a stitch in her side when he explained a joke he had pulled on his brother Clip who was apparently very nosey.
Summer moved along drifting in a haze of uncomfortable sticky heat that, because of her uniform, was inescapable. Despite the lack of air conditioning and the extra heat added by the coffee machines, A.K. always sat inside so he could talk with her.
It was a comfortable routine and she was a little surprised at herself how much she began to look forward to seeing him, even on days where they just did their own thing and barely said a word to each other, there was a comfortable companionable silence, no demands no expectations just two people enjoying the world for a few quiet moments.
It was almost funny that the biggest change to their little relationship, if it could be called that, had come on a rainy day as well.
A.K. had been a bit distracted when he had arrived but she knew he had a lot of businesses and this wasn’t the first time he’d been lost in thought on arrival.  Newspaper and tea ready she’d served him with a smile and accepted when he didn’t respond.  Whatever it was must have been important so she wasn’t going to press.  If he spoke to her she’d respond but if he had to think she’d let him think instead settling on her chair and pulling over her sketchbook.  The last few times he’d been in she’d found herself sketching him.  The dignified way he held himself.  Those dark eyes with light in one dark socket, his faint smile…
She blushed a little touching the page where she’d loosely sketched his profile.  She had it bad. If she was a bit braver she might have asked him on a date but.. She wasn’t.  For one she didn’t want to spoil this wonderful friendship,  she couldn’t think of anyone else she could sit so calmly with.  For two, aside from these Tuesday afternoons  she had no presence in his life after all they didn’t really talk about their personal lives much,  Yes she knew he had brothers and yes she knew Clip was nosey, and Cal while responsible was also a bit impulsive meaning at time AK had to reign him in. from that she knew he was a good and responsible big brother.  Of course he clearly loved his brothers a lot, but what did she know about him other than that?  What he did for work?  Just that he owned businesses, not even which ones.  She knew he liked tea with milk and honey but what was his favorite food?
For all she knew he could have a girlfriend already… or a boy friend., admittedly he’d never mentioned one and she would think he’d speak as fondly of a partner as he would his brothers regardless, she’d keep her peace and just enjoy their time together, maybe someday she would get the courage.
So the afternoon was peaceful, A.K. had pulled out a small notebook and seemed to be scribbling something still deep in thought, his absent mumbling the only sound in the cafe other than the soft music that drifted from older speakers no louder than a whisper of sound.
In fact it was so peaceful and so calm, that when the gunshots ripped through the glass of the front windows she was too stunned to really process what had happened.
Sound had gone tinny in her ears as she stared at the black vans in front of the shop already had squealing tires as they tried to flee.  the windows were broken, the cases, her tip jar was shattered coins spilling across the counter.  She reached out mindlessly only to realise she hurt.  She looked down red, blood?  She was bleeding? But why?  What had?
The pain bloomed harshly and suddenly as her mind caught up with what was happening someone had just shot up the shop s-she was shot… Gaster!
She looked up to try and find him but..
No she didn’t
Her body wouldn’t listen to her…
Before she could think too much about it she was on the ground… had she fallen?  No she felt, arms around her,  cradling her gently.
someone…
“A-Ga… a…” her attempts to speak were silenced by a finger against her lips as Gaster pulled her close, resting a hand over her chest a glow of green magic?  It felt strange it hurt, but she knew she was getting better.
She’d never given much thought to how a bullet might feel working its way out of her body but now she was feeling it she was positive she’d rather not experience it again.  When his hand moved to just below her ribs she wondered, had she been hit more than once?
Wow… that was all she could really think between the pain and confusion about well, why the hell would anyone shoot up the Cafe?
Wait… h-he was a monster had he been hit?  B-but he wasn’t dust, how?
“O-o… hurt?” she finally managed Gaster paused glancing at her before shaking his head and returning his focus to healing her wounds.
“Not now, I’m fine, just rest your body isn’t built for these kinds of injuries.” he said strictly he seemed.. Angry.  She tried to speak again when one of those holed hands settled over her eyes and suddenly she felt… heavy, sleepy.
The pain was fading but so were her thoughts she just…
needed…
Sleep…
For a moment just a bare instant she thought she heard him speak again,
<i>Everything will be alright love</i>
 ----------------------------
 Waking up in a hospital was not on her list of things she’d like to do again. The smell was awful, the sounds were harsh and the lights were garishly bright.  But there was the positive.  Waking up in the hospital meant she wasn’t dead, always a good thing.
Speaking to a doctor she got more details about what had happened.  She had indications of having been shot four times, however the wounds themselves seemed old, as if they had happened decades ago meaning that they had been healed by monster magic.  He told her while she’d been considered a critical case when she’d first arrived the magic must have been pushed deep into her, allowing her body to keep healing even though the monster who had healed her wasn’t there.
Then she’d been approached by cops.
They were kind, speaking in low voices not because of other patients but because she was still sensitive to sound and light.  A side effect of magic apparently, the healing magic boosted a human's senses to extremes they weren’t used to handling.  A small price to pay for surviving four gunshots as far as she was concerned.  They gave her a bit of information about what had happened. Apparently the people who had shot out the cafe were members of a gang?  They asked her about her life, did she have any friends who might be involved in gang activity, What was her boss like, was there anything odd about anyone who came into the Cafe?  It was all pretty standard.  Neither of them said anything about Gaster
In fact, it occurred to her that the doctor hadn’t either, only said, ‘A’ monster had healed her.
She knew she shouldn’t lie to the police, but… for some reason.  When they finally asked her to recount exactly what happened she told them all she could remember.  It was a quiet afternoon, she’d been drawing before school pickup started, she hadn’t even realised what was happening at first because it was so fast…  so fast.
That at least wasn’t a lie, and, if she forgot to mention A.K. being there well, that was just her sensitivity overwhelming her wasn’t it?  She wasn’t sure how but she just knew she shouldn’t mention his presence.  If they hadn’t mentioned him and he had vanished before the ambulance had arrived then clearly he didn’t want others to know he had been there for a reason.
Her boss came to see her, her brother came to see her, her friends came to see her.
He didn’t.
Why?  Did it have to do with why no one knew he’d been there?  Did it have to do with the fact that it was gang members who had shot the Cafe?... Did it have to do with why he didn’t talk about his work?
The thought had been there, a businessman who always had time on Tuesday afternoon to sit and have tea?  His brother only ever mentioning ‘business’ that once before Gaster had silenced him.
She knew there was a gang, a couple gangs… was Gaster a member of a gang?  No, he was too smooth, too smart, to be some gang putz… which left only one real option, one that had seemed so far fetched and well, film plotish, she’d simply ignored it.  He was some kind of leader…
L-like a mafia don or gang leader or something...
It took a few days for the doctors to be satisfied with her condition to release her, despite the power of healing magic clearly they wanted to make absolutely sure she was well taken care off… of course as she’d been released she realised that she had been in a private room, good god how expensive would that be?!
Her inquiry however had been brushed off by the receptionist, she’d simply been told not to worry as it had been dealt with.  But she didn’t know anyone who could afford  to pay a hospital bill right off, let alone a private room!
The Cafe was closed for repairs…
It was Tuesday again, standing outside the cafe wrapped in a thick wool coat staring at the wood set in the windows to protect the inside as they where fixed up, the windows would be one of the last things to be replaced…
Would he ever come back?
“I don’t suppose you have that blend of tea at home do you?”
Geno Run Exiles
Summary: Continuation of my Sanster Week 2017 (that I have been working on since 2017). Underfell Sanster fluff with being on the Surface for the first time.
Relationship: Fell Sanster, Sans/Gaster
Warnings: Mentioned genocide run
Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/24594760
The goopy monster, formerly known as Gaster and newly dubbed Trip, closed the door with a decided click. As much as he appreciated this other Toriel’s help, he really was capable of dealing with this problem by himself. He was a doctor, a medical one. He might not be able to do things as fast as her healing magic could, but he’d get there in the end. He didn’t need or want to be reliant on someone else’s help. You never knew what the price would be.
Like this apartment, for example. He’d expected to be dumped into the worst suite in the building, or worse, out on the street. Instead he was in this place. This place, with its leather furniture and brand new tv. This place, with its stainless steel appliances and double oven. This place, with it’s sleek wooden table and chairs. This place, with framed art on the walls. This place, with a jetted tub and two shower heads. This place, with its two bedrooms and a balcony big enough for another dining set and a telescope. This place, with it’s amazing view of the river and a park full of trees. This place...this place was so far above what he had imagined it was outside the solar system.
Trip shuddered. He hoped that whatever these new monsters demanded on him wouldn’t be too hard on him or Sans- no. That wasn’t his name anymore. Just like he was now named Trip, his Sans was now Kiks. It was the others’ universe after all. They deserved to be able to keep their names, no matter what the other Sans had said.
Speaking of Sans...er, Kiks, he should go and check on the other. Her Majesty had said it would be a while before his boyfriend woke up. Maybe yes, maybe no. Either way, Trip did not want the other to wake up alone. So he slowly oozed his way into the first bedroom.
The bedroom was just as well appointed as the main room. A king bed with an ultra-soft blanket and plush mattress stood in the center. A walk-in closet stood empty on one side. Two nightstands with beautiful lights whose bases were in the shape of conch shells lit the room in a soft glow. The comforter was patterned with curves of color; blues, tans, and light pinks gave the overall effect of a beach scene. He wondered if the sea was nearby. That would be nice.
Beneath the comforter and the blanket was Kiks. He was out cold. Her Majesty had removed most of his layers, so all that was visible above the blankets was his red sweater and spiked collar. The sight of it made Trip happy. His matching one was tucked safely in his inventory.
Trip planted a loving kiss on Kiks’ head and settled into the bed next to him. He didn’t lie down, just perched on the side of the bed and looked towards the foot of it. Beyond it, in the wall, was a window to the outside world. At the moment it was shut to keep the rain cascading down its surface out. Trip decided to fix that. He got back off the bed and oozed over to the window. He unlatched the bottom and started spinning the little lever that extended the brace. The window opened upwards since its hinges were at the top.
The sound of heavy rain hitting a window pane was one Trip had never thought he would hear again. It soothed him, just like it had done when he was a child. He went over and sat down on the edge of the bed. Soon, he laid back. A little relaxation wouldn’t do him any harm, right? And neither would laying flat. He was just enjoying the softness. Just… enjoying… the… rest…
=====
Trip startled awake. Someone was touching him, and in his world even letting someone close enough to touch him basically meant you were dead. He looked around, magic coming to his aid in a desperate burst. Then he saw who it was and all of that went away.
Kiks smiled at him. He was sitting up in bed, with his hand outstretched towards Trip. There were tear tracks on his maxillae, but no actual tears. They had dried up.
“if this is a dream, i don’t wanna wake up,” Kiks whispered hoarsely.
Trip smiled widely back at his boyfriend. His voice still sounded high and smokey, just like Trip had remembered. It was so nice to hear him again. Trip went to speak, but then changed his mind and signed, -I don’t think it’s a dream. It’s been too weird for even the worst of dreams.-
Kiks held out his hands imperiously. “hug first. story later.”
Trip smiled even wider. Yep, this was his boyfriend. He surrendered to the hug happily. They cuddled like that for a few minutes. Every time one of them went to leave the hug the other squeezed. Eventually they both pulled back.
“so, tell me about all this weirdness you were talking about.”
Trip did so, signing to Kiks about tripping over a safety railing on his way to work one day, about falling into the void, about the desperate loneliness of waiting in a place that was nothing for something, anything, to happen. He told him about Kiks showing up on the edge of death.
“before you go on, lemme tell you about what happened to me. i was hanging out at my sentry station - i’ve been a sentry pretty much ever since you fell - when a really loud scraping sound came from over by the big door. i went to check it out, and there was this human. well, not exactly a human. it was like something insane was wearing a human’s skin. also a lot of dust. and that wasn’t the end of the dust.”
“they, uh, pretty much decimated the underground. they didn’t just dust everyone in their path. they searched everywhere for even more monsters to dust. the only reason they didn’t get everyone...well, pap distracted them at the edge of snowdin. people got to the lab and hid in the basement. he, uh, wasn’t one of them. i was watching. they dusted him, and then they took his dust, swallowed some of it, and kicked the rest into the river.”
“needless to say, that hit me kinda hard. it pissed me off. by the time i’d stopped being in shock, they were all the way through hotland. i set a trap for them in the judgement hall and waited. the trap...didn’t work. they almost killed me just like they’d killed everyone else. but i couldn’t stand to let them have my dust. so i, uh, kinda teleported into the core?”
“i must have passed out, because the next thing i knew i was waking up in this creepily comfortable bed next to you. this definitely isn’t in the underground i know, so, uh, mind filling me in on the rest?”
Trip signed to him about the void suddenly giving way to his floating body. He told him about the door appearing out of nowhere, and how, eventually, he had braved his way out, Kiks in hand. He told him about the other Sans, Toriel, Undyne - all the other monsters. He told him about the healing, about their new names, and, finally-
“wait. are you seriously trying to tell me we’re on the surface here? that’s...way too good to be true, g.uh, trip.”
-It’s true,- Trip signed with a smile, -I made them take me outside to check. We have a balcony here we can safely go out on. It’s enclosed on both sides and several stories up. Do you want to?-
Kiks leveled a look at him. “trip, are you seriously asking me if i want to see the surface? of course i do!” He pushed himself upright. Trip caught him before he could fall. He had been seriously injured. It wasn’t surprising that he would take a while to recover. “um...might have a problem here, trip. trip? trip, stop laughing at me!”
-I’m not,- Trip signed quickly, fitting it in between belly-shaking, glitched-sounding laughs, -I’m just laughing at myself. I should have known it wouldn’t be possible for you to walk just yet. Do you mind if I...carry you?-
The other skeleton bonked Trip’s forehead. “you’re not omniscient, dumbass. just pick me up and take me out already!”
Trip obliged, scooping his lover up in a comfortable embrace and slowly oozing over to the balcony. Kiks operated the handle and sighed when he saw the view outside. It was a beautiful, green park that stretched for miles. Trees of all sorts were scattered around a creek. Children were laughing and playing in the wet grass. Their voices floated up to Trip and Kiks, then floated further up into the colorful sky. Sunset was just beginning, and it was gorgeous.
Kiks didn’t breathe for a solid ten minutes while he took everything in. As skeletons they didn’t strictly need to breathe, but it was still a good habit. Trip was starting to get worried when Kiks let out a wild whoop and hugged Trip around the neck tight.
“it’s the surface! doc, doc! there’s clouds and everything! i didn’t know that the sky got this colorful. what’s it called?”
Trip smiled and set Kiks down in one of the chairs so he could talk. -It’s called a sunset. S-U-N-S-E-T. It’s caused by the light rays from the sun hitting the atmosphere at certain angles. These angles, when coupled with the crystalline nature of the upper atmosphere, create a rainbow of color. This color is always present at some arc in the sphere of the globe, but is constantly moving and changing in shade. There is a similar, although not identical, phenomenon known as sunrise. S-U-N-R-I-S-E. It happens on the other edge of night and day.-
Kiks smiled softly at him, his head in his hands. “you know you're really cute when you get all nerdy on me, doc?”
Trip blushed at that and coughed. Then he signed in a flippant way, -I’m just answering your question, Kiks.-
Kiks’ smile spread into a wide grin. “yeah, right, and i’m the queen of the underground. queen of the surface? what’s this toriel like, anyway? i know the one back home had a wicked sense of humor and a love of dust pie.”
-This one seems to be very much in everyone else’s business. I don’t know about her sense of humor, but it was hard to convince her to leave you to me. She’s one of those bossy healers who thinks magic is a substitute for time. You know how I feel about them,- Trip said with a shrug.
Kiks cocky grin was a relief for Trip to see. He’d always loved his boyfriend’s sense of humor. “do you want me to start planning a prank?”
Trip nodded, letting his own face split into a savage grin. -Oh, yes. Nothing too bloody, they seem to be very peaceful here, but she definitely deserves to get dunked on. Also, try not to let it trace back to you. I don’t know what the price for this apartment is going to be yet, and I really don’t want them adding onto it.-
Kiks cocky grin vanished. “fuck, trip, we’ve been through this. not everyone is like that. i’m not, my brother’s not, and i’m pretty sure that these people aren’t, either. if they are, well, we’ll deal with it. but try not to worry about it in the meantime. you’ll just get stressed.”
Trip sighed. -I know, I know, I just…-
Kiks stuck his tongue out at him. “no justs, just wills. you will put it out of your mind and explain those weird light things in the sky now. Are those buildings in sky?”
Trip looked up sharply. There, in the darkening sky, were the stars. He smiled and began to sign. -Those are the stars I’ve told you about so much, Kiks! Stars and planets, too. A planet is…-
The Tea Party.
Yet another short story I wrote in the Heart and SOUL Undertale AU! Once again, it isn’t necessary to read this to understand the story of the comic… but if you’re curious about Gaster, this story will reveal a little about him that won’t come up for a while in the comic.
This story takes place between page 35 and page 36, when Sarafina was four years old, and goes over just what happened during her first real conversation with her odd grandfather.
Sarafina looked over the tea party her mother Toriel had helped set up. It was a mix of a brightly colored child’s play tea set and real, grown-up china. Obnoxiously pink plastic plates held graham crackers and orange slices, and flower-print cups waited for tea from Toriel’s second-best teapot. Sarafina reached out and gingerly touched the teapot. Still warm. Well, lukewarm. She harrumphed to herself. Mama never let her drink really hot things.
Toriel had been rather surprised when Sarafina had begged to set up her own tea party right after Frisk brought her back from Asgore’s tea. Ordinarily, Sarafina would spend hours on those Friday afternoons either grumbling about Frisk getting to sleep over at Asgore’s every other weekend without her, or moping around the house, missing her older adopted sibling and whining about being bored while refusing to actually do anything other than complain.  So Toriel had brewed the tea for Sarafina without comment, simply relieved that her young daughter hadn’t kicked up her usual fuss at being separated from Frisk over the weekend.
Sarafina stretched over the tiny table and rearranged the tea cups. Again. She wiggled her loose tooth. She squirmed on the floor cushion she sat cross-legged on, getting more comfortable. She sighed, and looked up at the cat-shaped clock on the wall of her room, tail swinging back and forth, ticking away the seconds.
Big hand on the 12, small hand on the 3. She’d only be waiting 20 minutes. The little girl huffed another sigh and slouched over the table, then grumbled to herself and sat up again. Patience. Frisk had been working with their baby sister on learning patience, and she was trying. It was hard.
It was especially hard today, because Sarafina knew she could be waiting for nothing. She couldn’t be sure the Boogieman would even show up, after all.
Sarafina had seen the strange monster all her life. Her earliest memory of him was him leaning over her cradle, smiling, when she was half asleep. She had turned to face him, grinning and reaching for this new friend, but he had jerked violently away and disappeared as soon as she moved.
Since then she usually saw him at a distance, and Sarafina thought he looked… sad. Lonely. He was never with anybody, he never talked to anyone, and if there was a crowd of people, at the mall or the park, everyone ignored him. She was half afraid he would be knocked over by the rude passersby, rushing past where he stood, never even glancing in his direction. She wondered if he was homeless; people tended to ignore the homeless, and he was always wearing the same thing, no matter the weather.
Sometimes though, he would appear closer by. Outside the kitchen or at the door of her playroom. A few times in the houses where she had a play date. She had gotten into trouble for scaring the other children at daycare with stories of a monster with heavy scarring on his face appearing in their homes.
The daycare assistant had scolded her for “telling tales” about a Boogieman. She went home in frustrated tears that day, but at least she had gained a name for him.
Everybody else kept calling him her imaginary friend. At four years old, she considered herself much too grown up for something like that. She wanted to prove Miss Annie wrong; she wasn’t making up stories! And… she wanted to do something nice for the sad looking monster. She knew what it was like to feel lonely. Sarafina unfolded and refolded the paper napkins set out by the teapot. Asgore always made her tea when she visited him with Frisk -- he said it was his way of welcoming them…
There was a small… “noise” was the wrong word. If the feeling of a cold breeze brushing along your back was something that was heard rather than felt, that would be the sensation Sarafina suddenly detected behind her. Her ears pricked up excitedly. He was here.
Sarafina took a deep breath, in and out, and put on her friendliest smile. Turning quickly, she gestured to the tea. “Hello! Would you like to join me?”
Standing in the doorway to Sarafina’s room was the skeleton-like monster. He was tall, as tall as her uncle Papyrus, even standing hunched up like he was. He wore the same shapeless white sweater and black robe as always. His hands, partially hidden by those robes, were horribly mangled by holes piercing the palms. Huge cracks running up the right side of his skull and down the left side made his eyes uneven and caused his smile to look crooked. Painful.
Or he had been smiling. As soon as Sarafina started speaking, his smile turned to an expression of shock, and his entire body seemed to ripple nauseatingly as he swung away and started to fade.
Sarafina jerked forward, upsetting the empty teacups, crying out frantically. “Wait! Don’t go!” Something in the child’s voice caused the specter to hesitate. With obvious effort, he re-solidified and turned back to her uncertainly. The tiny monster-girl held out a hand toward him, bright eyes pleading. Please stay. I promise I won’t hurt you.”
He tilted his head slightly, as if he was trying to listen to her over a great distance. Slowly, he raised a hand to tap his chest. “…sEE me… hEAr… Me?”
Sarafina mirrored him, tilting her own head as she flicked her ears back and forth, trying to catch his halting, undulating voice. Once again, the noises he made were less like sounds and more like a physical sensation twisted into something else. It felt almost like she should be reading his voice, not hearing it. Like the rest of him, his words were asymmetrical… and seemingly painful.
The question confused Sarafina. “Uh-huh. But it’s kinda like… you’re talking over one of Auntie Alphys’ old radios, mister -- ,” She stopped abruptly, realizing that calling him “Boogieman” might be rude. She turned suddenly shy. “Um, what IS your name?”
The simple question seemed to surprise him. “nAmE..?” His eyes half closed, and he appeared to struggle with the answer, as though he were dredging up a memory nearly forgotten. “gA… Gaster.”
Sarafina sat up straight and tried to put on her best manners. “Pleased to meet you Mr. Gaster! I’m Sarafina.” Picking up the upset teacups, she again invited him to join her. “I made tea… or, well, Mama did, I’m not allowed to use the stove. Would you like some?”
She carefully poured them both cups of the now cold tea as Gaster folded himself awkwardly into a seated positon across from her. He moved oddly, as if his body no longer worked in ways he was familiar with. Watching him from the corner of her eye as she poured, Sarafina was reminded of how the amalgamates Alphys worked with moved when they were feeling weak. He wasn’t an amalgamate, though, she was sure of that… but he did remind her of someone…
Sarafina sipped her tea, but Gaster simply held a hand near his cup, tilting his head side to side as if examining a strange, foreign object he didn’t quite have the courage to touch.
Sarafina studied him for a moment, thinking. “You know, up close… you look kinda like Daddy.”
Gaster’s eyes shot up to her in astonishment. His eyes, an incorporeal mirror of her own, were just like her father’s; bright lights within dark sockets. The lights dimmed slightly as his expression turned sad. “sAnS…”
Sarafina blinked her own white-on-black eyes in surprise. “You know my Daddy?”
Gaster shrank into himself slightly, sagging as he struggled to answer. “SAns… paPYruS… sonS…”
Sarafina scrunched up her nose and frowned as she tried to puzzle out what Gaster meant. “You know Unca Papyrus too? Sons? What does… OH!” She looked up at Gaster in excitement. “Are they your sons? Are you Unca Papyrus’ and Daddy’s daddy?”
Gaster nodded jerkily, moving with more animation than she had ever seen in him before.
The child’s itching curiosity finally got the better of her. “But… if you’re their daddy, why don’t you talk to Daddy? Why are you always by yourself? Do you visit Unca Papyrus? Why do you run away? Or do you teleport like Daddy? Why didn’t Mama tell me about you? Why does everyone ignore you? Are those your only clothes? What happened to your hands? Why aren’t there any pictures of you? Does Frisk know you? Why – ”
The sudden barrage of questions startled Gaster. His body rippled again, and he opened and closed his mouth a few times, but was unable to actually respond to any of the questions in the rapid-fire interrogation suddenly flung at him. Sarafina finally noticed the dumbfounded look on Gaster’s crooked face, and closed her mouth over her last question with a small snap.
Sarafina felt her cheeks heating up, and she knew she was blushing hard enough that the strange blue hue of the blush could be seen under her fur. Embarrassed, she let her gaze drop to her hands on the table top. “I’m sorry… I’m just really happy to finally meet you.”
“…iNQuiSitiVE…” Sarafina looked back up to see Gaster smiling again. “SLoweR… pLeaSe?”
Encouraged, Sarafina perked up and tried to speak more slowly. “Okay, um… why doesn’t Daddy talk about you?”
Gaster’s smile faded and his eyes dimmed again as she spoke. “MaCHine faiLEd… SanS... sO tiRed… ”
Sarafina shook her head, frowning. She didn’t understand that at all. Machine? What machine? And Daddy was tired a lot, especially in the winter; she knew it worried Mama. But Sarafina was starting to realize that speaking was terribly difficult for Gaster. She sighed.
“There are lotsa things Daddy doesn’t like talking about...” She drooped a little and started picking at the edges of a paper napkin. She had seen Sans avoid or evade certain topics, sometimes abruptly leaving in the middle of a conversation to do so. He had even done it to her, once or twice. “I guess… you’re one of the things he doesn’t wanna talk about?”
Gaster looked at her solemnly, and then nodded, eye-lights faint.
“But, you’re family; I mean, if you’re Daddy’s daddy, then you’re my grampa, right?” Another, more enthusiastic nod to that. “How come you don’t visit us? Or, you know, not just kinda hang around. Does Daddy not want you to?”
Gaster hesitated a moment, but shook his head. “… do nOT wANt… uPsEt SAns… FeW anCHorS… ManiFEstATioN… difFicuLT… ” As if saying this reminded him of that difficulty, his entire body rippled and he faded slightly. With a grimace, he re-solidified. “cAnNot… stAY lOnG…”
Once again, Gaster’s faltering explanation made no sense to Sarafina, but she became alarmed when he started to fade. “Oh no! But… I finally got to talk to you! Can’t you stay a little longer?”
The idea that the small child wanted to stay in his company seemed to surprise Gaster. He blinked his lopsided eyes at her, nonplussed.
Sarafina misread his expression and thought she had pushed too far. Her ears flattened against her head, and she dropped her gaze to her hands again. “I mean… if you want to…” Her voice grew soft “I get lonely too, sometimes… I don’t… have a lotta friends… an’ Frisk is busy lots now…”
“…WiLl tRy…” Gaster tilted his head inquiringly. “cAn… reTUrN?” He seemed uncertain of his welcome, still, but Sarafina’s face instantly lit up at the idea of her new-found grandfather returning.
“You’ll come back? Really? Yay! Okay… how about…” She thought for a moment, trying to remember how her mother scheduled the week. “How about on Tuesdays and Thursdays?” She gestured to the little tea party. “They can be ‘T’ days!”
For a heartbeat, Gaster just stared at Sarafina, and then started making a strange choking sound. Sarafina grinned as she realized he was laughing. Within the odd laugh, she could just make out Gaster saying, “sANs’… ChilD…”
Sarafina bounced up and down on the cushion excitedly. “You know what? I’ve always wanted a grandparent! This human girl Angela from my preschool is always teasing me (she’s a mean poopyhead, but I’m not supposed to call her that), but now I can tell her that I have a grampa AND he’s taller’n HER grampa…”
Gaster smiled sadly as he listened to his granddaughter’s chatter; it had been years since he had been part of a conversation, even one that was mostly one-sided. He had forgotten the simple pleasure of the company of another. Of family.
With concentrated effort, Gaster reached for the teacup in front of him.
------------------
Toriel paused by Sarafina’s door, watching her tiny daughter through the gap left open to hear if Sarafina called for her while she was doing chores around the house. Toriel smiled softly as Sarafina spoke excitedly about her day to the empty place setting across from her.
So, she had wanted the tea party for her imaginary friend. What had Sarafina called him again? Some human word… ah, yes, “Mister Boogieman”, that was it. Sarafina had told Toriel that he was always running away; she must have decided he could stay for tea and graham crackers.
Sarafina had such an active imagination. She even stopped talking from time to time, face intent and little ears flicking forward, as if she were actually listening to a reply to her dialogue.
Toriel heard the front door open; Sans must have finished the grocery shopping. She hurried to the stairwell to greet him, and bring him upstairs to watch his daughter playing so creatively. He would love to see it.
As Toriel turned away, the teacup in front of Sarafina rose shakily upwards and tilted back, the tea inside disappearing before the cup fell back to the table with a small click.
Sarafina politely offered more tea to her grandfather.
Chapter 9: How am I even supposed to be feeling right now?
In which a certain skeleton realizes he’s smarter than he thinks.
*Sans's POV*
It's been like two weeks since (Y/N) stayed at the Dreemurr's house with everyone else. I take that day as a reference because a lot of things have happened.
One of them, my new home... that feels really tense.
Our parents decided to live with us so we all can have a better relationship with each other (well, it was actually Arial's idea), and I just let it be. Now I fucking regret it, 'cause I remembered that Gaster is a stupid asshole. He just criticizes everything I say, I do, or I've ever done with my life. It's fucking annoying to hear he has "such a disappointment of a son" every two seconds and poor, innocent, Paps trying to dismiss his bullshit.
Arial, being in love with the doc like if they just started dating, never said a word defending me. But, in order to look like a good person, she doesn't defend her perfect husband.
Go on- defend that piece of crap, Mom.
Honestly, Papyrus and I could have been perfectly well on our own, just like we were in the Underground. He's now fifteen, and I am twenty-two; isn't it too late to try to bond a connection?! They should have tried when Papy was just a kid and I was a fucking depressed teenager, trying to sustain my brother and the place we lived.
Oh, did I mention I was the one who paid everything? They didn't put a single freaking cent! I did all on my own, I even got a lot of trouble to persuade one human into buying my old house. And all for this?! Now I can't even get on my house and smile to my little brother without being judged...
Ah...
I really miss those times.
When I would get out of school or of... "work", and meet the smiley face of my brother. That smile is what keeps me from ending it all. I just can't leave him behind with that fucking couple of irresponsible parents while I'm burning in hell.
I just can't.
Today, though, we are out of that uncomfortable place and back on the Dreemurr's house. It's really big, and, I must admit, better than anything I could ever afford. Toriel insisted that we shouldn't lose our friendship, therefore, everyone must go. And so there I was going, trying to resist the urge to punch Gaster on the face and then go to my bed and cry while I fall asleep...
That was too specific.
When I arrived, boom! Surprise surprise! (Y/N) was there, freaking out in the middle of an argument, hosted by Undyne and Mettaton.
Poor girl.
Papyrus did whatever it was on my mind, and intervened. The dispute ended quickly, thanks to Papyrus's innocence not wanted to be ruined. My death glare also helped but, hey- Papy did almost everything, so he gets the credit.
(Y/N) let out a sigh of relief, then awkwardly muttered a 'thank you'. She anxiously looked over at the four of us, then waved shyly before disappearing into the kitchen with Tori.
She... is certainly something. I don't think I've ever seen anyone this nervous before.
Maybe she has problems socializing, but that would make no sense. But now that I remember, she indeed was anxious whenever we went for a meeting with her.
Or whenever we hang out.
...
Actually, I think she's nervous about the mere fact of being around us. We must be a huge group of weirdos to her, while in her head she's planning an excuse for how to escape.
"Ah, well..." she interrupted, gaining everyone's attention "I have the results for, uh, your access in our education systems. I believe I, well, have everything specified in your documents, so... yeah... do you, eh, want me to give them to you...?"
Silence. And then, a grateful and unexpected squeak, courtesy of Toriel.
"Oh! That's just wonderful! Thank you so much!"
"Ah, it's... nothing" (Y/N) answered, with a seemingly usual hint of anxiety in her voice.
Then she grabbed a shitton of folders and started to giving them to us. I took mine nervously and remembered all the times I studied really hard for school. I remembered, also, every book I read and how I ended up learning French.
I just hope it wasn't for nothing.
I took a deep breath, now remembering the exam we had to do in an office, like if it was a diagnostic test. It wasn't that hard but, what if I failed? I swear to God that if I need to do high school again, I will kill myself.
I opened it slowly, almost closing my eyes in fear. A panic attack started to take over my body, and I must have shown it since (Y/N) was giving me a concerned look.
"Sans, are you okay?" She whispered softly, making me relax just a bit. Then her eyes lighted up a little as if she now understood "Don't worry, you did well. In fact, you did perfectly!"
Gaining more confidence from her small smile, I opened it quickly and checked the first page. Then I stood in shock, my mind going numb and my mouth opening slightly.
...
College.
I can go to college.
To fucking university, like a normal person at my age would.
I looked at her and noticed she was almost smirking by my reaction. Then she gave me the biggest smile she could and a thumbs up.
And, I swear to God, I felt amazing.
I checked the other papers, and I was becoming even happier. Texts said that I was a mastermind, that I could even get a huge scholarship in an important university if I wanted to. My redaction skills were noted as perfect, which made my nonexistent heart skip a beat. My science knowledge was amusing, and math, oh lord, had really high notes.
At the end of the documents, I noticed a little post-it. I looked at it curiously and started reading it as soon as I grabbed it in my hands:
<<Hi Sans!
You did really well on basically everything! You should be proud!
If you are interested in going to a university any time sooner, I recommend you to check out Ebott University. It's one of the best schools in the country, and I think you have the capacity to join! Hell, even have a great scholarship there!
No pressure, though. It's just a suggestion, after all!
I just wanted to congratulate your excellent results, and to tell you that you can do it! You looked really stressed after giving your test, so I thought I should tell you this: you'll do just fine, Sans. Have more confidence in yourself, alright? If not for you, at least for your brother, who I see that it is really important to you.
I wish you the best of lucks, my friend!
(Y/N) (L/N)>>
I didn't know how to react. The only thing I know I did it's that I smiled all the time, and felt like this was just a happy dream about me being successful in life. I just couldn't believe that all my effort did work.
I glanced at her and saw that Papyrus was chatting excitedly about his future. He proclaimed that he would do his best in order to "make her effort count". I smiled, noticing that, after a long time, I shared the same enthusiasm as Papyrus.
I must have been staring because Paps waved at me energetically while she just let out a happy sigh.
"BROTHER! I AM FIT TO THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL!" he exclaimed, making me smile even more. "I'LL FINALLY BE ABLE TO LEARN NEW THINGS, SANS!"
With Papyrus in school, I think I can work for a better future in the midtime.
After such a long time.
Everyone else was also excited, confirmed by Gaster's small and hypocritical smile.
He probably did better than I did.
I looked over his paper and saw it; he could instantly go for the scientist role in any place...
And I have to study.
My smile twitched a little but quickly forgot my dismay by a big hug from my brother. Oh lord, what I would do without him?
I wOUld prObaBLy k!ll mYsEl-
Calm down, Sans.
You've got this.
I returned to my old and casual smile, relaxing a bit. We're out of the Underground now- it's my chance to finally do what I want. And what I want to do right now...
It's to buy another book.
...
Nerd.
A lot of people are actually surprised when they hear I love reading, especially the classics. I must seem so relaxed and chill for them, then. Which it's good since that's my favorite side of me, but... maybe keeping this reading obsession out of view it's dragging me down. It would be better to find someone to share these things with...
But who?
I snapped back into reality and shrugged it off. I can't lose my cool.
I just can't.
Eventually, I caught up into the conversation everyone was being part of. As expected, the topics were related to the future and how are we going to make our dreams come true. (Y/N), however, was just smiling there, trying to fit in silently. But, obviously, she felt excluded every time she tried to gain the courage to say something.
She doesn't seem to be up for conversations, either. When Toriel asked her a few things, she stuttered and played with her fingers. I have no idea how I managed to understand everything she said, but somehow I could. Still, I feel sorry for her. She probably doesn't want to be here.
I wonder why she helped us, though. She hasn't asked for money just yet, and she tries her best to don't be rude at all. She apologizes a lot and freaks out whenever someone acts to be offended or sad. Whenever there is an argument, she probably has a mental breakdown and tries her best to don't surpass some limits or to let the problem go any further. The mere look of her face is the purest description of anxiety I've ever seen...
Maybe she suffers, indeed, anxiety...
But you just can't ask her, can you?
...
Of course not.
It would be stupid to arrive at her side and immediately ask "hey girl, do you have anxiety???".
She would stop talking to me, and considering that we'll see each other more in the future, I just can't go on and make our friendship awkward.
...
Wait- friendship?! You don't even know her that much!!!
...
But she indeed called me in the post-it as a friend.
My skull was starting to hurt, and curiously, it's been for a problem that isn't mine. I must admit, though; anxious or not anxious, (Y/N) seems to be really nice. And she's like, smart as fuck.
Or that's how I see her, who knows.
"HUMAN!" Papyrus exclaimed, snapping me back to reality... again. "WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS SO NERVOUS TO TALK TO US? WE WON'T HURT YOU!"
Oh shi-
"Ah, eh... I, em, don't know...? It's just, ah... eh..."
Shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit
"It's just, em... I... how do I explain, em... ah..."
Tell her something, you fucking asshole!!!!!!!
"ah, kid. you don't need to say it if you don't want to. i bet everyone will understand"
She just looked at me nervously, like if she was asking for reassurance. I nodded my head slowly and gave her a thumbs-up, trying to calm her down. She took a deep breath and smiled, a hint of confidence gleaming in her eyes.
Wait, is she going to say it? Why-
"Well, em, Papyrus" she started, shaking her hands in order to calm down "I suffer from something called... anxiety. I was diagnosed some months ago, actually".
Oh, so I was right?
How sad, she's so nice to suffer from something like that.
Wait, so that means she-
"wait, so you are enjoying your time here? for real?"
"Oh, of course!" she responded immediately, smiling nervously at my statement. I'm such an asshole "I actually was starting to miss getting out of my crappy apartment to socialize with other people! I'm... not the best at it, though. I do suck at making new friends and- shitidontevenknowifyouguysconsidermeasafriendimsosorry"
Was she for real? It's difficult to see this girl as someone not loved or wanted. I mean, I must admit she's pretty and, besides, she's super nice and patient. I'm starting to see that she didn't do this for money, but because that's her nature. A kind girl, not standing social injustices. Her words and her personality now make sense- she's just that different to others that she finds it difficult to have real friends.
"HUMAN! I'M DELIGHTED TO HEAR YOU WANT TO BE FRIENDS WITH US! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, ACCEPT YOUR OFFER AND I'LL BE THE COOLEST FRIEND YOU'LL HAVE!"
I should probably tell her the same.
...
I'm rooting to be friends with this girl, I just can't dismiss the fact she wants some company.
But aren't I judging her too quickly?
...
She looks lonely for real, though.
I mean, I do have Papyrus, but she seems to have no one at her side. And that just fucking sucks. I don't think anyone deserves to be so lonely and so misunderstood. I don't even understand how she has dealt with it! I don't think I'll ever be able to be alone with my mind. I would have probably killed myself as a teenager and not been here.
"hey kid, you've been really nice and, well, a real light of hope to all of us. i don't think anyone here wouldn't like to be your friend. or well, at least i don't, y' know?"
She smiled and seemed a lot more relaxed, as everyone else nodded at my words. I could see she felt more accepted, which made me feel better. It's stupid, isn't it? I feel good because I included someone that deserved to be included since the beginning.
"Oh, I know!" Frisk raised her finger in the sky, gaining all of our attention "We should do a huge sleepover party in order to commemorate our new friend, (Y/N)!"
Papyrus gasped with lights in his eyes, clearly excited about this new idea. (Y/N), though... she looked like she was freaking out a lot. I put one of my hands on her shoulder, trying to tranquilize her, and incredibly she did. She gave me a small smile and mouthed an "I'll be ok", which made me smile as well.
As much as I must hate humanity, I think she's an exception.
But I really don't know
"BUT FIRST!" Papy screamed, bringing with himself a ton of wood pieces and a hammer. Then he locked the door completely and put a padlock that I don't know where it came from. "THERE! NOW NO ONE CAN ESCAPE THE PARTY! NYEH HEH HEH!"
I swear to God, almost everyone had a heart attack at that moment. And (Y/N), of course, seemed like she was dead for a moment.
Before we could react, a bunch of blankets and pillows were all over the couch, and my brother was already connecting the Wii and the Xbox. Undyne was bringing chips from the cabinet (without any permission, by the way), and the kid was getting some board games.
This is gonna be a long night.
(Y/N), without anything else to do, offered herself to help. But since she was "the guest", the official planners of this sleepover didn't let her. And since I wasn't going to help, we ended up sitting on the couch, talking about... well, anything.
"is there any way we can help with, uh, your anxiety?" I asked her, trying to feel more, well, accessible...?
"Well, um... I think I'll be ok. As long as I'm not dragged into a huge party with unknown people... which it's not totally happening, haha..." she paused, then she glanced at me in horror "Right?!"
"considering mettaton, uh..." I stopped, knowing I fucked up "...maybe?"
I shrugged at her with a small and nervous smile and her eyes widened a lot. I felt horrible, but I just couldn't lie to her. If she's gonna continue here with us, Mettaton's personality will need some... moderations? And honestly, I don't think he'll ever moderate that slutty character he has created, that it's the dirtiest version of himself.
She sighed though, realizing that, no matter how much she wanted things to be different, she couldn't change them. Or could she?
"It's okay, I guess" she started with a deep breath, like if this was something difficult to her "I mean, I just declared that I have anxiety, whichistilldontunderstandwhyidid, but that doesn't mean people should be different around me or take pity on me. The world just doesn't work like that, and that's fine! So I think there's no way to help my little ol' problem... except medicine, of course"
"oh, so you already went to the doctor then?"
"Yeah... but I constantly forget to take the, uh... pills..."
Wow, so she doesn't even care that much? Or it's just that she cares more about work? Probably the second, but it doesn't really matter. (Y/N) has anxiety and she isn't dealing with it the proper way, but I'm no one to tell her, well, anything about it. I haven't been responsible for ages, I'm not gonna tell this girl any advice about responsibility.
Not today.
Not ever.
"EVERYONE! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, HAS SETTLED THE GAME!" Papy shouted, shutting up all my thoughts about this kid. Thank God.
"oh really, and what is it bro?" I asked, sounding as lazy as usual and hiding my real self with a smile. It always works.
"TODAY, BROTHER!" he posed heroically "WE ARE PLAYING A POPULAR HUMAN GAME THAT REQUIRES STRATEGY AND GOOD THINKING!"
Huh?
"WE ARE PLAYING..." (notice the dramatic suspense)
"...MONOPOLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Is this the part where I shout in happiness or where I scream in horror?
Chapter 26
Word Count: 2,107
They had traveled for a while and had recently set up camp in the snow fields. To monsters with fur, this wasn't too bad of an area to be in. To people with none like Gaster and Gerson, it was freezing cold. Maybe not so much to any flame monsters either, who tended to be popular while the group was here.
Gaster spent most of his time around Anton for the heat of his flames. “Surprised to see a man of bones shivering next to me.” The flame monster signed to Gaster.
“A system of magically manifested nerves, that's all, yet makes for a sad existence. Maybe if I had less magic I would be without the ability to physically feel.” The scientist mutters out with a glance over at the other. He was slightly glad he had a friend that produced warmth as a flame being. Asgore was more happy for Gaster wasn't just hiding away for warmth of some kind.
“I'm sure you'd be glad to be without them during a time like this of course, though I guess it wouldn't be easy to get.” Anton swings an arm over Gaster's shoulder when he finishes writing with his flames. The shivering one was a bit surprised but didn't bother to move anyways. The warmth at least was appreciated.
“Thank you for your kindness.” Gaster responds as he moves his gaze to the nonliving flames burning off of small fallen branches monsters had gathered.
“Isn't it what we need in this period of time to keep thriving on? Kindness and teamwork?” Anton asks, having Gaster respond with a small nod. Couldn't say he was wrong at least but it didn't mean he wanted to comply with it exactly.
They only stayed there for maybe half a day of time to rest before beginning to get moving again. Gaster stayed by Asgore like an advisor as they quickly picked up to get on the move again. Before they could take off into more unknown territory though, a bunny monster walked up to the two and made them pause.
“Hello, your majesty. Some of us here monsters were wondering something.” Asgore looked over at the women, allowing her to know he was listening to what she had to say. “We were wonderin’ if ya minded if some of us who don't mind the cold stayed behind and maybe built a small town here.” Asgore seemed surprised, but clearly in a happy way.
“Yes, that is a wonderful idea. You have my full support in settling here.” The king responded, giving a big, bright smile. “We just need a name for it then.”
“Well with the location it might as well be Snowdin, no?” Gaster gives a small smile, one that rarely appears nowadays. Asgore seemed about to respond at first then paused, dumbfounded.
“Snowdin sounds wonderful!” The bunny spoke up. “Thank you, Dr. Gaster.” She bowed politely to both before walking off. The king was baffled, but eventually went to talk to his guards, without a word of anger said to Gaster over that name. He just helped give the monsters some support with any guards to spare.
With that all taken care of, the rest continued on their travels to explore the cave system. To Gaster, less people might be better anyways. Anton, even if he can keep himself warm in the snowy weather, had to decided to come along and catch up to Gaster at the start of the crowd, giving him a small wave for his attention. The scientist looked up and over, but didn't really bother to wave back.
“How are you?” Anton writes out, clearly hoping for an expansive conversation with the other, but it didn't really go as planned as Gaster just shrugs off the question. He thought for a moment before making another attempt at communicating. “I would have been settled down with the others but I wanted to keep helping this group out first. There's still a lot to go after all so u want to play my part in this.”
“We're glad for your help then.” Gaster responds, giving a weak smile since he was unsure how to respond otherwise. He didn't want to make Anton go away either, mainly because he felt too tired to deal with trying to find a way to let him go away on his own rather than Gaster pushing him away, so it was better to that let it happen and feel the guilt later.
Soon the snow became slushy and the ground was becoming more of a wet area. ”Dang it.” Anton writes with an inaudible laugh that acted more like a smile than anything. Admittedly, it did make Gaster smile a bit.
“Turn back if you need to. We don't want anything bad to happen as we go.” He states. Anton just shrugged it off with little worries about it clearly.
“As long as it doesn't rain or I don't get dunked in water, I'm fine.” He gives a smile and Gaster just nods. Eventually, Anton tries to start a conversation again, or at least revive the one that ended. “So what do you plan to do when you find some place to settle?”
Gaster shrugs at first, taking a minute to get a response. “Work? Most likely the case at least.”
“Really?” Anton starts. “Don't you already do that? And isn't it kind of boring? Even for a scientist like you, right?” Gaster tried to deny it with the shake of his head, but the flame monster clearly wasn't all that convinced with the answer, so he pressed on. “Well, I myself might start a business or go raise a kid so things don't feel so lonely wherever I choose to love. I'm not sure yet though.”
Gaster shrugged, yet again.  Maybe one day he'll get tired of having to shrug things off his shoulders. “Seems like a plan. Depending on how you do it you could have a chance of doing both together.” Anton seemed to like the idea instantly, giving a bright smile.
“Yeah! I think I could try balancing both.” Anton even adds a smile in flames before writing out a ‘thank you’, making it clear he's grateful for Gaster's opinion in the matter. Luckily for Gaster, the conversation ended there.
The group of monsters kept traveling on with small conversations between each other to keep their minds somewhere so they aren't bored most of the way, yet they also quickly became entranced by the sights of the water area. Some guards had to keep an eye out for anyone wandering away, especially any of the kids. It was a dangerous area with cliffs and pitfalls most of the time, so it was only common sense to keep an eye on where everyone was.
They would stop midway, or at least where they thought was midway, to let any monsters who wanted to wander and explore the beauty of this part of the caves do so and let the rest take a break. Gaster actually was interested in this area to explore it for its various features of fauna. The blue flower field nearby became his first research site since it wasn't too far and many had already gathered there, which allowed him to observe others interacting with the new flowers.
Gaster surprisingly enjoyed sitting amongst the flowers and sketching them out in his journal. Most of the facts he gathered came from the monsters, for the flowers seemed to repeat their words, so the interacts were crucial to his data. The monsters even quickly realized what the flowers were essentially doing and gave them a simple name, going around and calling them “echo flowers”, just for they echo back what they “hear” and nothing else. That's just how some names tend to come into play at least.
The monsters even made it a game, to put secret messages for their friends and family, and sometimes just for those passing by. Even wholesome messages were spread around, cheering up each others day or night, whatever the time was anymore. It didn't matter, they were at least happy now compared to the boring old days.
Gaster's observance time of the noise echoing flowers quickly, and sadly, had halted when Asgore took him by surprise, for the king had snuck up on the scientist to see what he was up to and Gaster never took notice until Asgore spoke. “You draw wonderfully, Gaster.”
With a jump and attempt to not react too badly, the mentioned skeleton turned around to face Asgore with an upset look to him. Even if it didn't seem to bother the goat. “Can you not sneak up on me next time you want to say something?” Gaster asks and makes the other chuckle. Asgore sat down next to his friend and takes in a glance at the surrounding area, at his people who were enjoying themselves and dragging others to play with the flowers.
“Sorry.” The fluffy monster starts. “Didn't think I would say anything at first, but your flower drawing is still nice looking.” He gives a small smile, but Gaster just goes back to writing down notes in more detail.
“Flowers aren't that hard to do, honestly.” He mutters out. Asgore lets out a small chuckle before patting the other on his head gently.
“Still.” The other leaned away as the king spoke, trying to get out of the pats as he grumbles a bit. “I'm glad you re finding interests in these caves like everyone else. It'll be good for you.”
“Yeah. Maybe so.” Gaster responds plainly, purposely for nothing to say unless Asgore had different topics, and just kept making more observations of the fauna. Apparently, the other did have something to say.
“I was wondering what to name this place, without letting you this time for last time's well… incident.” Gaster let out a soft chuckle after hearing that, growing more proud of the name. Asgore just continued, even if he seemed upset that his friend just laughed it off. How dare he. “I was thinking of Waterfall, you know, since its a water filled area with waterfalls.”
“That's a pretty overly simple name, don't you think?” Gaster asks, running out of room on his journal page at this point, but it would last enough.
“It is a name good enough to call the area! Everyone will know what they're referring to even if they never heard it before!” Asgore argues, having some kind of point.
“Well, I guess I can't argue with that. Go with it if you really like it.” Gaster didn't want to argue anyways though, so he left it at that. “It's your decision as king.”
“Mhm. I'll announce it then when everyone gathers back up. They'll like the name, I promise you. Which means I'm right.” Asgore states as he crosses his arms. Gaster rolls his eyes, closing up the journal.
“Yet I also have a name to a place, which is also easy to tell what it is. Wouldn't that make it like a tie?” He looks over, finding Asgore's posture seeming to weaken a bit at the facts presented.
“W-well, I'll have three names in total actually! So this'll just be after hearing your type of names that they still like mine, so I'm still right.”
“Alright, whatever you say big guy. I guess you would win in the end, unless they like mine more.” Gaster at least believed he had some kind of point anyways. “I plan to get going now anyways, more places to explore.” Asgore gave a small nod as a start to his response.
“Stay safe and be back soon then.” He says as he gets up with Gaster. The scientist gives him a glance before walking away with a wave, allowing Asgore to be free of his presence. Gaster didn't feel like staying around him anyways.
He kept walking until he found a more desolate place, near a river where a few rocks shine like stars, though not as many as some other areas had. They were definitely more scattered in this area. He'll have to see how they work later though, how they glow exactly. If it's just retracting light somehow or producing it themselves.
Gaster paused when he heard some steps behind him, looking around to see who it was. It sounded like someone was running though, so they were gone from the area quick. He got up and walked the place, trying to find a more interesting area, and maybe he'll find whoever has decided to wander so far from the group like he had.
