This is a commission collab I did with my friend Fizzie! Basically, we came up with the idea that we give each other characters and a third or first-person POV to go off of, and we write a story just based on those. She posted hers a day or so ago, so go check it out and give it some love!
Fizzie’s Story: http://aminoapps.com/p/u8pxte
Keep in mind…she doesn’t know the plot ;) But I decided with the number of characters she gave me, I would do an AU where they just have a girl’s day! She gave me Nea, Yui, Laurie, Claudette, and Meg to work with! Hope you enjoy girl!
Also uh....had to add a little side ship of your OTP since I know how much you like Quendette :)
Word Count: 1,929
━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━
The weather was perfect today. The sun was shining, no clouds to be seen...it was just a great day to get out and do something. And that’s exactly what this group of friends was doing. But they weren’t going out just as a last-minute thing, this was all planned out months in advance. And it was going to happen no matter the conditions.
Why so dead set on going out? Well, today was an extremely special day for two girls, in particular, those girls being Nea and Yui. The two had been dating for...well what seemed like forever. But they had been dating for around four years maybe? Ever since the beginning of college. And well...within the next couple of days, they were going to get married. And who else would be a part of their wedding if not their group of friends they had been with basically since they were children?
Now, things weren’t always great for this group of girls, but honestly, it always worked out in the end. And today would hopefully be no different. The five of them were just supposed to go out and get their nails done, then go to lunch afterward. And it was all supposed to go according to plan, but you know, nothing could ever go perfect, especially not with this group.
━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━
It had all started this morning, and can you guess who the first one to screw up was? If you guessed Nea, you would be correct. The girl had forgotten to set her alarm the previous night, and Yui had gone to spend the night with some of her old friends from Japan that had flown down to America for the wedding of their friend. They had stayed at the hotel, but they weren’t coming with them to get their nails done today. Since it was just going to be the two bridal parties together.
And as anyone could have guessed, Yui was not that happy to find out that Nea had forgotten an alarm on a pretty special day. But, Nea had apologized profusely as she ran around the house quickly getting changed into sweatpants and a t-shirt, all while their three friends Laurie, Meg, and Claudette giggled at the couple’s antics. The lack of Nea being prepared did not make them late though, so that was a little bit of a bonus to the shitty beginning of the day.
━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━
When they arrived at the nail salon, everyone was no doubt, excited. Nea was talking with Meg and Claudette as they walked in, trying to decide on a matching color. Since the two were her bridesmaids, she wanted to make sure she picked out something they all liked. In the end, they had decided on a pretty light pink color. Since Nea’s dress was white, sticking with the traditional way of things. Well, as traditional as you could get with a lesbian wedding that is. The pink would match really well with the bright white gown.
Yui on the other hand was supposed to wear a white kimono, sticking with her traditional Japanese ways. She had a pink and white floral uchikake for the reception afterward, something her grandmother had worn at her own wedding, a garment Yui absolutely adored ever since she was a child. Now….she would get to marry the love of her life in it.
Laurie was her bridesmaid, being closer to the older woman than Nea’s two other friends. And they had both decided on a beige color for their nails, thinking it would look good with the white and the pink. Which, funny enough, were the colors for the decorations the two women had decided to be their main decor of the ceremony.
━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━
As they walked inside the salon, there weren’t a lot of people there, maybe like….two others? Since it was still pretty early, but since they were getting both nails and feet done, they didn’t want to be there super late in the day when more people would start popping up. Common decency at its finest.
They were lead to sit down by a worker after picking out a polish from the walls, deciding to get acrylics for their hands with gel polish instead of normal polish, so it would stick on longer. And...quite a few of them had short nails, mostly because of their jobs. Yui was a mechanic since she always loved bikes and cars, things like that. Nea was a painter, but not a normal one. She got paid to do graffiti art on bridges and such, something to make the town more lively.
Meg was a semi-professional athlete. She wasn’t too well known, but she made a pretty good amount of money. Laurie was a childcare worker, working at a school and her nails broke easily around young children, she had come to learn that the hard way. And Claudette was a doctor, and she didn’t want to accidentally be poking people with her nails all too often through the gloves she wore. So needless to say, they didn’t get to have nice long nails like some girls a lot of the time and wanted to make sure they stayed on for the amount of time they could have them.
━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━
They were sat down in the chairs to get their toes done first, one of the workers bringing over five glasses of champagne for them, one for each girl. And since they were all over twenty-one, they accepted it gratefully. Claudette wasn’t much of a drinker, but she would make an exception for this. It was a pretty special day after all, and she had taken off work for the next two days for the wedding.
Honestly, most of them had forgotten what it was like to just...be pampered like they were. It was honestly something they weren’t able to do often, being adults and such now with jobs to worry about. So it was relaxing while they just chatted, laughed, drank, and got their nails done. They did have a little incident where Meg almost kicked the nail stylist because the red-head was very much ticklish, but it didn’t seem to phase the person working on her. Only waving it off with a chuckle and saying it happens all the time.
━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━
They were there probably around….three and a half hours? Mostly because despite the early time of day, a lot of people seemed to come in quickly, and the girls had to wait to get their hands done. But, nonetheless, it was worth the wait, and the five females were very happy with how everything turned out.
Though they didn’t condone drinking and driving, Claudette didn’t really like the champagne, and only ended up drinking two or so sips before she couldn’t do it anymore, finding the taste too strong without a chaser. And Nea was more than willing to finish it off for the smaller girl.
This also meant Claudette was now their driver for going off to lunch. So, they all piled into Laurie’s car, Laurie in the front with Claudette while the other three sat in the back, Nea and Yui sitting beside each other holding hands while Meg stared out the window, asking where they were going for the thousandth time since they left the salon. And the answer was the same each time. It was some little small-town restaurant that Claudette’s boyfriend, Quentin, owned. So not only would they get a discount, but he made pretty awesome food.
━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━
It didn’t take long to get there, the place only slightly packed for the rush hour of lunchtime. And they quickly got out of the car, heading inside while chatting, obviously having to tease Claudette about coming to the place her boyfriend worked at.
As they walked inside, they spotted the curly-haired brunette behind the diner immediately. He had on his usual bright smile, his smile only growing bigger when he saw the five walk in, but it was definitely aimed towards Claudette.
“Hey, guys! Welcome in and have a seat wherever you want. I trust you guys to not take any unneeded space,” he said, more concentrated on the plates of food he was currently trying to carry. Quentin had changed a lot since high school. He wasn’t as shy as he used to be, and he had grown a lot taller almost six feet, and his hair had grown out a little longer. Needless to say, Claudette made a really good choice when she decided to start dating the nerdy kid.
The five took a seat at a booth, Meg, Laurie, and Claudette on one side with Nea and Yui on the other sitting beside each other. They chatted as they waited patiently for Quentin to come over to take their order, the boy handing off the plates of food to his co-worker, and ex-girlfriend Nancy. They had ended off on good terms, Quentin finding out he was into Claudette. And Nancy was totally fine with that, considering she and Quentin had been friends since childhood.
When he did come over, he let his customer service facade drop, his smile still there but seeming just a little less fake. He leaned down to press a quick kiss against Claudette’s cheek, causing the girl to giggle quietly and her friends to coo at her, “Alright….I’m guessing you all want the usual? Tea for you babe, water for Laurie, Sprite for Meg, iced tea for Yui, and a coke for Nea?” he asked, earning nods and smiles from the five girls. He wrote it down and walked off quickly, not before giving a quick congratulations to Yui and Nea. He hadn’t had much time to see them running his diner. One that his friend Steve had said he should open and most of his friends had pressured him into it. It was one of the best decisions of his life if he was entirely honest.
━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━
They sat and chatted for an hour or so, eating the food that was paid for by Quentin, despite the objections of everyone at the table. But, the brunette was kind that way...even if he was a little more than annoyed when he saw the tip left for him by the five women. Since the day was over, Claudette was going to drive everyone home with Laurie’s car, and Quen would pick her up when he was done with work in a couple more hours.
Nea and Yui were the first to be dropped off since their house was the closest, the engaged couple giving hugs and promises of seeing them tomorrow bright and early to go to where their wedding ceremony was supposed to be held. And after the goodbye’s, waved as they watched their three friends drive off down the road.
Nea turned to her smaller fiance, a small smile on her face as she slipped her arms around the woman’s waist, pulling her closer and pressing a kiss against her forehead, “I ever tell you how much I love you?” she asked with a small tilt of her head, and Yui could only giggle at Nea’s antics.
“You say it all the time darling....but I guess there’s nothing wrong with hearing it again..” she told her as she leaned up, arms wrapping around her shoulders to kiss her properly, lips pressed firmly against Nea’s. If this is what she was getting for the rest of her life, well, then she got pretty damn lucky.

First Drive: The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante Is a Scorching-Fast Drop-Top Dream
Tumblr media
Absolute beauty, absolute torque, absolutely buy one.
One of the most crucial things you learn after cycling through a veritable legion of different cars is that numbers—those cold, hard, irrefutable statistics pooled at the base of so many published automotive tests—don't tell the whole story. This is common sense, but no one prepares you for the inevitable perspective rot that sets in sometime between your first afternoon with a 220-horsepower hot hatch and the third time you pin the throttle in something with more 500 hp; it eats away at your internal goalposts to the point where your first impressions of statistics are now gangrenous and foul. "$50,000, 600 hp, and zero-to-sixty in 3.7," you read. "No dual-clutch? Might as well turn the whole lot of them into an artificial reef." No, not really, but this is where the 715-hp, 211-mph 2020 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante comes in.
As tested, this metallic orange, color-shifting shard of crystalized speed will liberate $388,000 from your offshore accounts if you replicate its build. If we're comparing caviar to caviar, that's $200,000 dearer than a loaded BMW M8 Competition Convertible and $32,000 more than a base Rolls-Royce Dawn. Heck, for that kind of cash, you've got a stripper fixed-roof Ferrari 812 Superfast and a spare $53,000 in options to play with. Leave all of the extras on the shelf, and you're still going to pony up roughly $330,000 for the privilege of owning the 2020 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante.
Plenty Of Power For this kind of financial sucker punch, more than a few of you are sneering at the 715-hp figure. After all, the aforementioned Ferrari 812 manages 789 hp without the help of forced induction, which is itself a smidge down from the blue-collar Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye with its concrete-crackin' 797 hp. Keep reading, and it becomes statistically more upsetting; in place of the supercar-standard dual-clutch transmission, the 2020 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante makes use of a traditional ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic, returning a zero-to-60-mph pull of a feet-dragging 3.5 seconds. Can you imagine admitting that middling time down at the athletic club? Careful you don't mention that in front of Alistair—I heard he's been mighty proud of his new 911 Turbo S and its 2.6-second sprint.
Enough snark. Untethered by comparisons, spec charts, instrumented testing, and Instagram comments, 715 hp is borderline unfathomable in a road-legal car, let alone something that was designed as a semi-cushy riviera mile-muncher. Significantly, aside from the monumental power, the DBS' 5.2-liter twin-turbo V-12 chugs out 664 lb-ft of torque. If you absolutely have to keep score, that's more twist than anything with an internal combustion engine on the present production roster at Ferrari, McLaren, Porsche, and Lamborghini.
Spleen Scrambling Speed There's so much torque, in fact, the transmission restricts the output in first through third gears, only giving up the full goods once you shift into fourth. From a dig, there's a mad scramble from the rear as the Pirelli P Zeros hop, skip, and slide trying to hold on. Once it hooks—somewhere around the 50-mph mark—you gather speed like a hiker chucked off a cliff by Bigfoot. There's no discernable drop-off in power, even as things get a bit blurry, breathless, and lose-your-license stupid; drinking deep from that twin-turbo V-12 gives off the sneaking suspicion the invisible hand of acceleration's been hitting the trenbolone rather aggressively. Not since the Porsche GT2 RS  and the McLaren 720S have I experienced a car that feels so capable of a million-miles-per-hour—and those aforementioned Automobile All-Stars did so with a piddling torque figure well shy of the 600 lb-ft mark. If one of your qualifiers for being a true "GT" car is the capability to effortlessly shuttle occupants at high-speeds for long distances, the 2020 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante passes with flying colors.
Looks To Die (Another Day) For That's to say nothing of the visual and aural drama that accompany this railgun launch. With or without the soft-top, the DBS Superleggera is arguably the most stylistically evocative Aston Martin we've seen in quite some time. If you weren't a fan of the catfish-style grille Aston cultivated since the 1950s, you're not going to like the DBS' maw, but it synergizes well with the DBS' unavoidably hulking footprint. Those flowing, windswept lines are devastatingly beautiful; it looks as if, were you to spatter a parked DBS' clamshell hood with water, the droplets would streak over the bodywork and dissipate off of the rear lip within seconds.
There isn't the same level of aesthetic theater inside, but mostly divine materials and thoroughly modern design permeate the cabin. Stitching and leather is top-notch, as is the infotainment infrastructure sourced from technical partner Mercedes-Benz. Some fasteners and mounting points are plastic, but you have to hunt for anything not leather-wrapped or carbon-clad. For the intended purpose of long-distance cruising or coddling on your daily commute, it feels mostly worthy of the $330,000 payout.
I'm not the only one who digs the DBS. Wherever you drive, cruise, park, fill up, or idle, phones come out, kids cheer, and takes are tripled. Parking the Volante in front of a nearby house where a car-hungry kid lives drew surrounding neighbors out like free ice cream, requesting photos, info, and an earful of that 12-cylinder music.
The Sound And The Fury What a sound it is, too. V-12s are understandably endangered these days, and two out of the six existing V-12 automakers don't even put their's on performance duty. Mercedes' AMG-ified V-12s are gruff torque monsters with an industrial-age soundtrack to match, so it falls to Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Aston to harmonize. The DBS' 12 isn't as sonorous as the vaguely Duratec-based Aston V-12s from the past two decades, but it's smoother and less gargle-prone than those free-breathing monsters.
However, just like those prior Aston V-12s, the DBS sounds objectively phenomenal, but somehow it manages to be somewhat clinical—almost like a V-8 tuned to sound like a V-12. Distant highway rips in a big Ferrari or Lambo are easily identifiable, but the DBS' 5.2-liter is almost characterless in tonality, similar to the crackly noise emitted by Jaguar's ubiquitous 5.0-liter supercharged V-8.
Superleggera Does Not Necessarily Mean Super Light Escape the looky-loos and charge into the hills, and the story gets even sweeter. The 2020 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante is a big car, so leave the tighter, narrower stuff to the Boxsters and BMW M2s, and head for an area with wide sweepers. Sawzalling the roof off the DBS coupe added an additional 220 pounds to the already hefty car, now weighing in at a total of 4,107 pounds. All of that extra mass went into both the folding canvas roof and the requisite structural bracing to compensate for the aire libre configuration. To offset this added bulk, Aston rejiggered the rear suspension by increasing the spring rates by 13 percent, alongside a 30-percent higher compression-rate and a 25-percent greater rebound rate.
Without having driven the coupe back-to-back with the drop-top, I can't say how big of a difference it makes, but I'd reckon with the Volante-specific changes, differences are minor. Charging over curvier tarmac, the excellent multilink suspension setup, wide track, and 50:50 weight distribution belies the bulk, returning composed handling that suits the car's multi-purpose, long-legged character. Compared to the sharper-edged Vantage, the DBS eschews the smaller car's Track suspension setting, instead offering three stiffness tiers ranging between GT, Sport, and Sport Plus. Most seat time was spent toggled between comfort-oriented GT and edgier sport, leaving Sport Plus only for truly pristine pavement.
Dynamically, there are only two gripes: The steering isn't as sharp or tactile as I'd hoped, and when paired with the DBS' particularly touchy throttle, the ZF-sourced eight-speed transmission was either overeager or reluctant to downshift, depending on the toggled drive mode. However, during regular day-to-day driving, neither the steering, throttle, nor transmission intruded enough to warrant further complaint.
Endurance Superstar Surprise, surprise—sublime, semi-relaxed grand touring is the 2020 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante's party piece. Like the big Astons that came before it, the DBS gobbles up hundreds of miles at an alarming pace, with nary a care given to broken pavement nor speed limits. Meanwhile, paralyzing beauty and roaring vocal cords alone are nearly worth the cost of entry. The 2020 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante is not a numbers car; call it a sensation car, as corny as that may be.
Next time the members down at the polo grounds get high-and-mighty with their Bentleys and Maybachs, take 'em out for lunch in the DBS—just make sure you take the long, straight-and-then-sweepy way.
2020 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante Highlights: Brain-bending good looks Enough torque to move an oil tanker Feels absolutely capable of its claimed 211-mph top speed Expensive—and worth it เดิมพันบาคาร่า

hello, i'm currently a junior in high school and planning on majoring towards visual communication/graphic design. However, i'm having troubles in assembling my portfolio. Do you have tips on that and on how to (hopefully) get a scholarship within the major as well?
hello bub!! (✿◠‿◠) OMG we’re legit the same im also a junior who wants viscom :-( so I dont have real experience but I did put up my public portfolio last summer (http://nsduldulao.portfoliobox.net/) sOOO  here are some tips I could offer atm! I will add when I learn more from my cousin who’s going to major in graphic design as well! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
TIPS FOR AN ART PORTFOLIO
Be DIVERSE as possible! I read somewhere online that having a diverse portfolio gives u more chances of getting in which makes sense bc you need a wide set of skills to be able to catch up (& slay) ur art classes!!! so even tho we applying for graphic design course we should add traditional art projects we’ve done ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ (hopefully i can add to mine soon!)
Ok on the diversity note, add observational drawings aka realistic drawings: this is a winwin not only do you get to practice your hand at realistic drawing (which i hate tbh) you can add these to your portfolio! (make sure not to forget the shadows and just make it as realistic as possible!) (*´д`*)
Look at different art portfolios: to know how you wants yours to look like + u can set a standard for yours: count the number of traditional art pieces they added, did they add process shots? (highly recommended btw),& more!! ∩(︶▽︶)∩
Art for different purposes: this is a Nic tip so idk if this is?? 100% good but in different art projects through highschool, I’ve always found myself looking for inspiration & eVEN learning a new set of skills the simple play project 2 years ago got me into set design which is my current position in my club (from a layout head see the diversity!!) so add your school posters, graphics, set designs you’ve designed, a magazine layout from your projects! going through your school work is a good way to start (especially if you always take on the artsy role in projects which leads me to my next tip)
(☞゚∀゚)☞ BE AS ARTSY AS POSSIBLE: I had my career talk already and my counselor said my school history (clubs, positions) look straightforward so its easy to know my strengths (tbh im kinda upset abt this bc its all art realted it’d be good to see smth else BUT its a strength bc I rly want art anyway so!!) it would make sense to accept you since you’re really dedicated & started at a young age and through out highschool! Try your best to aim for the high positions as well
then for the scholarship: I’m not sure since it really depends on the school you’re applying for! so please ask your counselor bc I cant rly help :–((( IM SORRY (つд`)
I hope this was some srt of helpful GOOD LUCK BUB HAVE A NICE DAY! ლ(╹◡╹ლ)

Car accident question and if I need to report to insurance company?
Ok so here's the scene, I'm backing out of my driveway from my garage. My friend parked his car at the end of driveway (he was leaving but parked there to answer a phone call). My driveway is a downhill so when I backed I couldn't see his car there. Anyway, I backed into his car and caused a minor scatch. Unfortunately, his car is a new BMW and he needs to fix it. The police came and said it is under $1000 fix and it is up to us if we report to our insurance company or not. So now I am waiting him to get a estimate to fix. What do I need to do? I guess it is my full responsibility since I am moving and he is still. If the fix fee is under $1000, do I need to report to my insurance company? How much does the insurance usually increase due to this kind accident? thanks

Health insurance rates. Switch or stay?
In the past 2 years my family's health care plan (which is offered through my husband's work) has gone from great to way too expensive. Perscription copays are 25/30/50, and not all things are covered. Two years ago we paid 275/a month and had 20 copays for everything (except hospital stays were always 100 and perscriptions they were 5/10/20). Bologna, Emilia Romagna – Italy’s Best Kept Secret?
Bologna is everything cultural and culinary that you think off when it comes to visiting northern Italy, except its charm is in remaining lesser known. Wedged in between the country’s more established and well-trodden cities of Venice, Milan and Florence, Italy’s seventh largest city – the historical capital and hearty food epicentre of the Emilia-Romagna region – is often bypassed.
But it’s precisely this feeling of new discovery that makes Bologna so captivating.
My trip here was a part of tourism drive to uncover various destinations in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy as part of the ‘Blogville’ project. Checking into an apartment on one of the main thoroughfares that leads to the very centre of the city – via dell’Indipendenza – I got to live local for four days and really immerse myself in this hidden pocket of Italy and lose myself in its wide grid of elegant architecture and gritty side streets, food markets and coffee shops, crumbling historical houses and defining towers.
Bologna is a medieval maze…
Every block and street corner you cross is part of a historical maze that showcases the city’s medieval origins and Renaissance re-touches. Old and calmly beautiful in grand measure, gritty and vibrant in equal parts, Bologna makes for curious, long wanders.
The three connecting open squares are the very core of the action. Piazza Nettuno (home of the cultural centrepiece that is the Salaborsa Library and the symbolic Fountain of Neptune) is the starter to the bustling main that is Piazza Maggiore.
Full of colonnades, cafes and pretty Palazzos, it’s at Piazza Miggiore where you will find the famed Renaissance beauty that is the Basilica di San Petronio that has the largest sundial in the world and Palazzo D’Accursio – the Town Hall and where you can gaze at the City Art Collection. Look out for Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio, marking Bologna’s stamp on higher learning. It’s the oldest University in the ‘western hemisphere’, established in 1088.
Head west along via Rizzoli and you will find impressive medieval towers of Asinelli and Garisenda – the two tallest of twenty that sprout from the cities historical structures, the last of what were once an original cluster of over 100 in the city’s medieval days. From here you can walk to Piazza Stefano, a picture perfect square dominated by the church.
For contrasting gritty street scenes, murals and the other half of Bologna’s persona, wander around the neighbourhood that was the former Jewish ghetto. It’s edgy, has a younger crowd, third-generation coffee shops, and sporadic street art that I can see booming on the grid-street walls over the coming years.
For more secluded streets, I spent some time south of the Piazzas, west of via d’Azeglio, enjoying the architecture and hoping that the Chiesa Della Santa church was open to see the mummified relic of St. Catherine, which sits on a golden throne. The spoiler is it’s rarely, if at all, open.
Bologna’s porticos conceal another layer…
One of Bologna’s defining features is its endless rows of elegant porticos that hold up the upper layers of the city and which are seen as extensions to the houses themselves. You can’t help but come off the street to walk beneath them. You’ll end up stepping a fair few metres of Bologna’s 40 kilometres of porticos. Not only are these a shelter from the weather, but also they are a chance to walk through one of the city’s most beautiful architectural additions that were established first in the Middle Ages.
Some of the original wooden porticos can be found in the historical centre of the city on the some of the older, uneven structures that stand out, but the more modern structures can be found everywhere. Because of a law passed in 1288, it was a rule that any new house in Bologna should be built with a portico. Where once man and horse took pace, you stride, gliding from one site to another in style.
If you want to say you’ve walked the longest portico in Europe at 3,796 metres long, find the one that starts just outside the city walls and leading to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca on the top of the Colle della Guardia – a hilltop pilgrimage site of sorts in the city.
Bologna is every hue of orange Pantone…
Blazy. Dusty. Vermillion. Flame. If you took an orange Pantone swatch with you to Bologna, you would no doubt find a building or wall that matches every shade. Hypnotized by orange, there’s something about these warm hues that make Bologna always feel inviting and warm with old rustic charm.
Bologna is at the very centre of Italian cuisine…
Not many have heard of the Emilia Romagna region of Italy but would immediately recognise its well-known gastronomy specialities like Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, Parma ham, balsamic vinegar and Bolognese sauce. All of this puts Bologna right in the beating heart of the food scene, where you can not only easily visit the food regions that surround the city, but indulge in these Italian delights in the foodie capital, exactly as they should be served. For a bundle of the best food picks head to the Quadrilatero district, which is a giant food market. During the day it’s humming with the sound of al fresco diners, food stalls, friends gossiping over coffee and family run restaurants. At sundown, it’s time to enjoy an Aperol Spritz or two in one of its many bars.
A food theme park, aptly named ‘Eataly World’, opened in November 2017 and will further carve out its name as THE culinary capital of Italy with over 30 restaurants, a huge market and multimedia experiences with gastronomy learning at its core.
Bologna is full of elevated viewpoints…
The majority of cities have one defining viewpoint or lookout from which to admire a panorama or see the city in its entirety. While San Luca is elevated, it doesn’t give the best views of Bologna, but three other high spots do.
The terrazza panoramica della Basilica di San Petronio (the terrace of the Basilica of San Petronio) is the best place for a panoramic view over the city from the very centre. At the moment, it is still under construction, with only half of the terrace open, yet this does not impact on the half you can see, making it still worthy of entry.
You can also climb the 97 metre high Asinelli Tower and its 498 wooden steps, for a bird’s eye view on Piazza Maggiore and around.
If you want a wider perspective, and the best view of all the famed towers in their varying heights, take a short hike up the Bolognese Hills in the south of the city to San Michele In Bosco (Srt. Michael in the woods complex). My friend, Emiel from Act of Travelling captured this view when he was in Bologna with me. This church and convent complex has been re-mastered in design many times since the Middle Ages with a Renaissance façade addition and frescos from the 16th Century.
Bologna could be mistaken in parts for Venice…
A small underground canal cuts through the city’s grid streets, while remaining out of sight. The city was once filled with open canals, but pushed underground over 200 years ago.
For a glimpse of what remains of this little Venice, you have to find the very small window that looks out onto one side of the canal the runs under via Piella. Turn around and you will see a wall that marks another viewpoint.
Bologna is the launch pad to explore the Emilia Romagna region…
With the Italian rail service serving all corners of the country, there’s no excuse not to easily explore the wider Emilia Romagna region outside of its capital. Bologna is the ideal base to hop to other destinations (which I later did by visiting Forlimpopoli for the Festa Artusiana food festival, and later for adventure activities in the autonomous microstate of San Marino) but also to take accessible day trips.
I got to visit Italy’s ‘Food Valley’ where I got to admire the landscape and learn about the history of pre-united Italy from the rooms and terraces of Torrechiara Castle. Such fortified structures stand in testament to the times after the fall of the Roman Empire, when a pre-united Italy and its then stand-alone provinces were constantly under siege and occupation.
Nestled at the base of Castello Di Torrechiara is Lamoretti – a part of the region’s famous food valley status, whose 22 hectares produce the best Malvasia wine and the perfect pairing with one of the area’s darling culinary specialities, Prosciutto De Palma. They say only Palma wines match the gastronomy, so being right here in the heart of it all is true perfection. The castle fortress view just adds to the cultural-culinary magical mix.
Within easy reach is Rivalta Castle, in the neighbouring Piacenza province of Emilia Romagna. It’s a medieval castle and now a private residence, although it is open all year round for tours and even has a number of bedrooms for those wanting to indulge in its legacy.
An historical hotspot and food valley haven, it’s surprising Bologna remains so undiscovered. It’s preservation of the old and traditional Italy that everyone seeks is what makes it such a wonderful surprise when you finally stumble upon it.
What else would you add to list of Bologna and its defining features?
Things to Know
Getting to Bologna
From Bologna International Airport, you can either take a taxi into the city centre (around €15) or use the Aerobus shuttle bus service that connects the airport and the main railway station. It runs every 11 minutes in both directions, and costs €6.
Bologna by Train
Bologna is accessible via the Italia Rail as well as being a main station from which to easily travel to regional areas and neighbouring cities. Timetables and ticket bookings can be found on the Italia Rail website, although it’s easy to buy tickets for shorter journeys directly at the station. ALWAYS remember to validate your ticket (via the ‘stamp’ machines) before boarding!
Bologna Welcome Card
Like any city card, the Bologna Welcome Card is a money saver if you are looking to go to a lot of top attractions and museums. You can buy a €20 card with free entrance to listed museums and places of interest for 48 hours or a €30 card, which gives you access for 72 hours.

Intel Optane Memory: How to make progressive innovation thoroughly exhausting One day 3D XPoint could change the world. Dislike this it won't.
3D XPoint (articulated "crosspoint," not "ex-point") is a promising type of non-unstable memory together created by Intel and Micron. Intel claims that the memory, which it's marking Optane for business items, gives a convincing blend of properties putting it somewhere close to DRAM and NAND streak.
The primary Optane items are practically here. For certain venture workloads, there's the Intel Optane SSD DC P4800X, a 375GB PCIe card that offers significantly bring down inertness than tantamount blaze drives and can brag high quantities of I/O operations every second (IOPS) over a considerably more extensive scope of workloads than glimmer. Intel isn't letting analysts really utilize the P4800X, in any case; the principal testing of the equipment, distributed recently, was performed remotely utilizing equipment on Intel's premises.
For the shopper, there's Intel Optane Memory. It's a M.2 PCIe stay with a limit of 16GB ($44) or 32GB ($77), and it ought to be marked down today. Dissimilar to the P4800X, Intel is giving analysts a chance to get hold of Optane Memory or possibly something near it: the part we got was marked "designing specimen," with no retail marking or bundling. The adroit peruser will take note of that 16 or 32GB isn't a mess of capacity. Despite the fact that the sticks can be utilized as traditional, if modest, NVMe SSDs, Intel is situating them as stores for turning circles. Match Optane Memory with a vast modest hard plate, and the guarantee is that you'll get SSD-like execution—generally, at any rate—with HDD-like limit.
Secretive memory
Nitty gritty depictions from Intel of how Optane functions are as yet remarkable by their nonattendance—the organization appears to have said more in regards to what Optane isn't than what it is—yet an essential picture is gradually being worked from what Intel and Micron have said in regards to the innovation. The memory has a sort of three-dimensional (henceforth "3D") grid structure (subsequently "XPoint"). Stackable layers have wires organized in either lines or sections, and at the crossing point of each line and segment is the genuine stockpiling component: an unspecified material that can change its imperviousness to various qualities. The points of interest of how it does this are hazy; Intel has said it's not a stage change material, and it's unique in relation to HP's memristor tech, yet it hasn't said decisively what it is.
Basically, the resistance change is diligent. Once a cell has had its esteem set, it'll keep on holding its esteem inconclusively, regardless of the possibility that framework power is evacuated. While we don't know how the resistance change functions, one thing that we do know is that not at all like DRAM, every information cell does not require any transistors, which offers ascend to Optane's next vital property: it's a ton denser than DRAM, with Intel and Micron differently asserting a thickness change of four to ten times.
The esteem put away in every information cell can likewise be composed and changed moderately effectively. NAND streak requires a high voltage to delete every cell, which enables a cell to be composed just once (flipping its incentive from a 1 to a 0) preceding it should be eradicated once more. 3D XPoint cells, by differentiation, can have their resistance (and consequently put away esteem) refreshed in the vicinity of 1 and 0 and back again without requiring any deletion step.To adapt to the high voltages, which gradually harm NAND streak after some time, and absence of rewritability, NAND is organized in an extremely specific manner. It's sorted out into pages of up to 4,096 bytes, with pages then composed into squares of up to 512 kilobytes. Peruses and composes are played out a page at any given moment, with eradicates happening not at page but rather at piece granularity. This makes issues, for example, "compose enhancement," where composing a solitary byte to a page could require a whole piece to be deleted and revised. Optane, be that as it may, can be perused and composed at (possibly) the granularity of a solitary piece. In the long run, Intel and Micron plan to offer DIMMs in light of Optane to exploit this RAM-like granular get to.
Being capacity like, Optane Memory doesn't offer piece level get to—it is composed into 512 byte "segments" rather—yet it in any case keeps away from the outrageous compose enhancement of blaze, and Intel claims that it has compose continuance that is maybe ten times superior to streak.
Optane is likewise a great deal less expensive than RAM. While $77 would be a considerable measure to pay for 32GB of NAND glimmer, it's a great deal short of what you'd hope to pay for that measure of RAM.
In its server board, Intel is utilizing Optane to offer an execution profile that blaze doesn't exactly coordinate. Streak SSDs can accomplish high quantities of IOPS, however to do this they tend to need extensive line profundities; that is to state, they need programming that issues a mess of I/O operations simultaneously, so the SSD can benefit them at any rate somewhat in parallel. A few drives require 32, 64, or even 128 I/O operations in flight in the meantime to accomplish their best numbers. The Optane P4800X can hit high IOPS numbers without requiring these profound lines, and its inactivity, the time taken to react to every I/O operation, has a tendency to be much lower than an equivalent SSD. For specific sorts of server workload, this can be profitable, even regardless of the value premium that Optane charges over NAND streak.
Half and halves have been done some time recently
In the buyer space, be that as it may, the Optane preferred standpoint is more subtle. The fundamental guideline of half and half drives is sufficiently sensible. Turning attractive plates have a huge preferred standpoint as far as total limit and cost per gigabyte, yet we're all acquainted with their drawback: generally low exchange speeds and get to times that are, in PC terms, epochal. A turning plate can take several milliseconds to play out an I/O operation, requests of extents longer than SSDs can oversee. Cross breed drives offer a sort of best of both universes. The huge turning circle offers plenteous limit with respect to once in a while utilized and execution inhumane information, and the little SSD goes about as a reserve, giving exceptionally quick access to the documents that get frequently utilized.
Various makers offer hard circles with blaze inserted inside them, offering a simple one-piece cross breed arrangement. Intel's stockpiling controllers incorporated with its motherboard chipsets have additionally since a long time ago offered a cross breed plate framework, called SRT ("Smart Response Technology"). In the first place presented with the Sandy Bridge Z68 chipset in 2011, SRT permits pretty much discretionary pairings of SSD and turning circle to be consolidated into half and half plates (Apple's "Combination Drives" are reasonably comparative however innovatively irrelevant).
For reasons that aren't instantly evident to me, Intel has constantly kept SRT gated. Gullibly, one would surmise that SRT's most extensive interest is low-and mid-go frameworks, where fetched limitations make it infeasible to offer substantial amounts of SSD stockpiling. However, Intel feels the inverse. At its introduction, it was just offered in the top of the line Z68 chipset. In the chipset eras that took after Sandy Bridge, Intel expanded SRT accessibility to certain lower-end chipsets, yet even today, the element is not all inclusive over the Kaby Lake chipset lineup. The organization has five Kaby Lake chipsets, from Z270 at the top of the line, through Q270, H270, Q250, and B250 at the low end. Just Z270 and Q270 bolster SRT; the other three chipsets do not.Typically, these cross breeds (regardless of whether incorporated or utilizing SRT) offer considerable lifts to things like beginning Windows and applications, yet in the event that your workload is sufficiently different, their reserving capacity is diminished. SRT is restricted to a most extreme of 64GB and Optane (right now) to 32GB. In the event that your arrangement of hot, routinely utilized projects and information fits inside 64 or 32GB then it can all be relied upon to live in the store. In any case, if you somehow managed to play a modest bunch of vast current diversions, the execution will turn out to be a great deal more hard circle like. The store essentially isn't sufficiently enormous to hold a few 50GB recreations completely, compelling the framework to hit the turning plate to load them.
The half and halves likewise have a tendency to do little to enhance things like programming establishment time. Programming installers won't be reserved (in light of the fact that as a rule you just utilize them once) thus all the perusing the installer does (and the resulting composing of the introduced programs back to the plate) works at hard circle speeds.
From a specialized, practical viewpoint, Optane Memory crossover drives give off an impression of being generously indistinguishable to SRT half breed drives before them. There are a few contrasts in the fundamental calculations. SRT was worked for SATA quickening agents; Optane is worked for NVMe. Optane is likewise evidently tuned in an unexpected way. Be that as it may, in both cases, the quick reserve (Optane or SSD) is utilized to store singular squares from the moderate stockpiling.
The fundamental setup process is likewise the same: the Optane NVMe stick is matched with a turning circle as a quickening agent. With SRT, the SSD could be designed as either a compose back store (wherein composes are composed to the SSD and just apathetically flushed to the HDD at the framework's recreation) or a compose through reserve (wherein composes are composed to the SSD and HDD in parallel). Compose back mode offers increasing speed of composes, as they can work at close full SSD speed, however accompanies a hazard: if the HDD and SSD are isolated, the information on the HDD might miss, stale, or degenerate, in light of the fact that the most recent information to be composed is discovered solely on the SSD. Compose through mode is slower, since composes can just occur at HDD speed, however implies that the HDD dependably contains a total, usable, up and coming duplicate of all your data.
Optane appears to just offer compose back mode. On the off chance that you need to part the drives up, you'll initially need to cripple Optane through the framework firmware or through Intel's administration utility. This flushes the reserved information to the turning circle, conveying it exceptional. In the event that you detach the hard circle without experiencing this procedure, the Optane will be set apart as disconnected.

Letter from the Directors Dear Everest Family,
As we reflect on first semester of the school year, we wanted to share with you our results from our 2016-2017 Fall Parent Survey. Thank you to the 39% of parents who offered their feedback by completing our parent survey. We hope everyone will participate in our next survey in the spring because the feedback we receive from our families as well as students and faculty help guide our plans and improvements for our school and community.
Improving parent communication has been a key goal of ours based on feedback from families, so we are excited that 93% of parents feel adequately communicated with and 94% know who to contact with questions or concerns.
We believe that parents are critical partners in supporting our students and our school, and are happy that 93% of you feel the same.
Your referral to another family speaks volumes to your experience at our school, so we are grateful that 92% of parents have recommended our school.
Among all aspects of Everest, you identified our mentoring program, personalized learning experience, and small student body as the top three aspects of our school that continue to keep you with our school.
While we are happy that 74% of families feel that their concerns are addressed. We know we can do better, and it is one of the reasons we increased our faculty size. We will dig into where there is a communication breakdown to address this important need, and we encourage all of you to continue to share your voice in upcoming surveys.
You can view the full results of Everest’s parent survey here. As always, if you have any additional feedback, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Please download the updated packet off of the everest.summitps.org/community-partners/athletics.  You can also pick up a copy in the new flyer folders by the teachers lounge entrance.  Students interested in playing winter sports should turn in the packet as soon as possible!   Please contact the Everest Athletics Directors at [email protected] if you have any questions or need any help.
Have a student interested in Sports Management?
Scorekeeping is one of the few ways that students within the Everest community can get involved in sports management. This opportunity will both show colleges that a student is a viable applicant for sports management programs and acquaint a student with the logistics of the field. The scorekeeper would only need to be present for games, so that's about a 2-4 hour commitment per week.
If you think your student is interested in this exciting opportunity, please email Ms. Lowe at [email protected].
San Mateo County Safe Routes to School (SRTS)
San Mateo County Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a collaborative effort between City/County Association of Governments and the San Mateo County Office of Education. Through education and encouragement efforts, San Mateo County SRTS supports initiatives to increase the number of students who walk, bike and carpool to school.  Currently, 100 schools in San Mateo County are formally engaged in the SRTS program.  The goal of the program is to engage as many schools as possible in encouraging students to take an active mode of transportation to school in order to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality around schools.  The survey will remain open until February 15, 2017.  The data gathered will be used to develop a baseline for school related travel patterns in San Mateo County.  It will not be used to single out schools and the transportation behaviors of their constituents.  The data for your school will be available to you to help support and encourage active modes of transportation to school whenever possible.  If you have any questions about Safe Routes to School or the Parent/Caregiver Survey, please call or email Theresa Vallez-Kelly – [email protected], 650-802-5306.
