What is Experimental Build?
Video game journalism is in a weird place right now. A lot of the biggest gaming websites are living in a profit-driven world that is ceasing to actually exist. Back when good old fashioned websites were the go-to places for news, reviews, and analysis of video games, advertising revenue reigned supreme. Websites were propped up almost exclusively through that sweet, sweet ad revenue.
However, over the last few years, the internet has been changing. With alternatives like YouTube, Tik Tok, Twitch, and Discord, website readership in general is dropping. If fewer people are reading articles, fewer people are seeing advertisements. If advertisers aren’t getting the same return on investment that they used to, they’re going to spend less money on ad space. If the websites aren’t getting the same ad revenue they used to, they can’t afford to pay their staff.
It would make a lot of sense for websites to adapt or change their business model right? Right! Yeah, that’s not what’s happened, though. Unfortunately, many games websites have instead adjusted the kind of content they offer in order to try to maximize what little ad revenue they still have coming in.What kind of articles bring in the most readers eyes these days?
Clickbait.
Guides.
Reviews.
Actual analysis or essays are few and far between because those don’t get nearly the same number of views as an article that makes an audacious claim or a guide to where to find a rare item in a popular new release.
Is there a place for games writing on the internet independent of ad revenue? I think so. Others think so, too. Late 2023 saw the formation of multiple new games websites (Aftermath, Remap Radio, and Second Wind are some examples) who are being funded exclusively by readers instead of advertising. That’s great! …If it works. The scary thing is…no one knows if that can actually work long term.
I genuinely hope for the best for them. The best case scenario for games journalism is reader funding giving writers the freedom to write the stories they want to write.
So that’s where games journalism is at right now. Big websites trying to get readers to view ad-littered stories and new outlets being funded by the readers themselves. Where does Experimental Build fit in? What does it bring that’s unique?
I’m glad you asked!
Experimental Build won’t exactly fit in with anything else out there. I have a slightly different idea for what games writing can be. The big websites can handle the reviews and guides, the new outlets can handle the interviews and essays, I wanna get WEIRD. I wanna get CREATIVE. I want to push the limits of what games writing can be.
When I browse YouTube or check out streams on Twitch, I gravitate towards creators who create unique experiences. I adore seeing people bring clever ideas to life. I love seeing people experiment with the media itself and create something special.
Can that be done with games writing? I’m going to find out. In the same way that a YouTuber can make a video with a wacky, off the wall premise, I want to do the same with games writing. I want readers to see a clever idea for an article I wrote, read it, and say to themselves “That was so fun!” I want games writing to be FUN.
The articles you find on Experimental Build will be, well, experimental. They’ll be unique. I hope you like them. Not all of them will be great, or even good, but they will hopefully always be fun.
Thank you for checking out this experiment.

EVEEEEE CONGRATS ON THE NEW BLOG I HOPE YOULL HAVE LOTS OF FUN WRITING 💜💜💜💜 Let’s see though,,, for my request,,, May I request hcs of Vil x a reader who’s a graphic designer and she edits his magicam posts and whatnot 👀💖
ue ue,,, forgive me if i mischaracterize vil. i also got a bit carried away and this ended up kind of lengthy. thank you vivian! <3
VIL SCHOENHEIT.
when vil finds out about your apparent talent, he’s impressed, to say the least. he knows how diligent you are with your studies, he’s seen with his own eyes the way you organize your notes proficiently and listen thoughtfully during lectures. the effort you pour into your academics is an admiring trait. he’s just, never thought you’re skilled in the creative side of the spectrum as well.
as usual, he’s having difficulties trying to outshine his competitor, neige leblanche. with rook’s advice, he sought out to spice up his contents and produce something that will successfully attract the public’s eye. newer is better, as the saying goes. he exits out to the school’s library after class has finished for the tiresome day to reflect and craft up a plan. he doesn’t expect to see you sitting down on one of the desks, typing things down on your computer once he gets there. ah. you must be starting the new assignment crewel has assigned, he guesses. well, that’s what he thinks, until he walks past you to secretly glance at the screen you’re focusing all your attention on which are, e-edits? how... intriguing. vil can’t help but be silently amused as he watches you skillfully colour in images and create appealing layouts. gears suddenly turn in his head and he ponders deep in thought, inspiration hitting him hard.
“vil, what are you looking at?” shoot. he’s so absorbed in your work that he fails to realize you’ve spotted him staring.
“potato, you’re quite good at editing.” he crosses his arms nonchalantly, nodding his head to gesture to your laptop. you sheepishly look down at the ground and a faint blush dusts your cheeks.
waving your hands in front of you, you rebuke his compliment. “no no. i’m not, really. you’re the one who’s talented between the two of us.”
ah, so you’re the insecure type. he clear his throat to change the topic, much to your relief. “anyways, i’ve been having a bit of a dilemma concerning my posts, lately.” he carefully explains the situation at hand and you nod along. “well, care to lend me a hand. i’m positive you have the skill to make promising results.”
you’re astounded, for a brief moment. vil schoenheit, one of the most popular social media icons in the school and your secret crush, is asking you for help? still in shock, you accept his proposal nonetheless, a wave of excitement washing over the prickling doubt in your head. and that’s how you became his personal graphic designer and your relationship with him takes a more positive turn towards the romantic light.
as you work and combine your talents together, vil admittingly forms a budding affection for you which blossoms into a full-on crush. how can he not? your effervescent smile that emanates warmth as you’re editing the latest posts he’s going to publish for the day gives him a rush of tingling happiness and he reciprocates your smile with a tiny beam of his own, highlighting his beauty.
he tries to pay you back with cash or gifts, but you quickly shake your head and reassure him that he’s worth the time. plus, you’re quite fond of editing so it’s killing two birds with one stone. he makes sure to at least credit you since it would be inconsiderate of him to take all the glory for himself.
after days of preparation and hard work, vil posts the finished products for all to see while you watch him in anticipation. immediately, your budding anxiety is quenched down by the multiple notification noises of his phone and, to both of your amazement, his posts have received generous number of hearts and comments filled with genuine praise in under a minute. what’s most surprising is the fact that he has now gained almost more than the massive followers that neige has. almost. vil should be feeling bitter and scornful for not being more popular than the rsa student is, but he’s... content. after all, he has something - or rather, someone, that neige will never have - and that’s you.
he strives for perfection, and he hopes you - his cherished lover and adoring graphic designer - excel too. it’s always better to journey hand in hand to the top instead of venturing alone, right?
you’re busy typing away on your laptop, concentrating hard on perfecting the edits for vil. the sky outside is dark and the moonlight beams through the many windows in the room. your eyes feel heavy and it’s tempting to close them to give way to slumber, yet you force yourself to battle against your drowsiness. the knocking of the door alerts you to turn around to the source of the intruder as vil himself swiftly enters pomefiore’s common area with a mug of hot cocoa in one hand.
“ara ara, potato, what are you doing up so late?” he places the cup down beside you and grips your shoulders firmly, yet gently, pressing your back against his chest as he straightens your posture. you automatically blush at the close proximity and offers him a little smile.
“i was trying to finish the work for today,” you gesture to your open laptop, ushering him to view your unfinished edit. he studies it closely. beauté as always, he muses to himself, just like you.
you take a sip and breathes out a sigh of satisfaction, letting the decadent taste of the drink trickle down your throat. he cups your chin and his lilac pupils bore into yours. unhesitating, he captures your lips in his perfectly, interlocking his tongue with yours for good measure. your eyes widen for a split second, but you close them reflexively and slings your arms around his neck to further deepen the intimate moment.
you stay together like this for a few full minutes, until he pulls away reluctantly. “[name],” his fingers comb through your hair, as if to lull you asleep, “don’t overwork yourself. you may have your flaws, but that’s what i find so endearing about you. rest now, my love.”
and with that, he seals your day with a fluttering kiss to your forehead before you finally drift into unconsciousness.

HOWARD HOUSE (Collaboration Project w/ @ladypaulsvn)
Episode 1: Pilot
Word Count: 3,631
Summary: Billie Dean Howard and Audrey Tindall both are very successful television stars. What people may not know is that these two actually live together... with seven other women. What happens when they make the decision to create a reality tv show about their home life? Find out and tune into Howard House, a brand new series about mayhem, love, and unconventionality.
A/N: hello everyone! this is the first collaborative project that I’ve ever been apart of!  @ladypaulsvn and I had an idea in April that turned into an entire series. This is basically Keeping Up With the Kardashians but if it was all Sarah’s characters. We’re incredibly proud of this, and we’ve worked extremely hard on this first chapter. If you want more, let us know because we have quite a few plans for this series! We really hope you enjoy!
“Are we rolling?” Billie muttered as a crew member finished fixing up her hair.
“We’re rolling!”
Audrey shooed away her makeup artist before flashing a perfect smile.
The last of the crew members made their way off the screen as Billie made eye contact with the camera.
“I’m Billie Dean Howard,”
“And I’m Audrey Tindall!” the Brit sang out.
“You may know us from popular TV shows such as Devil’s Night and My Roanoke Nightmare.” Billie added in a warm tone.
“We thought it would be interesting to do a collaborative series that was a little different from the dark paranormal themes we’ve worked on in the past.”
“That’s right, Audrey. We wanted to give our fans something a little more lighthearted!”
“So when Billie suggested we do a reality show type series of our home life, I hopped right on board! Because quite frankly we do not have a normal home.”
Billie laughed light heartedly at her comment. “That is extremely correct. We thought we would give insight into who we are outside of our respective careers and include the amazing eclectic group of women we share our home with.”
“We hope you join us in this premiere episode of Howard House.”
“Cut!”
The screen fades to black. The show starts with a simple shot of the Howard House. Inside, Billie Dean Howard is holding the very first personal interview.
“So, just introduce yourself for the audience, yeah?”
“Right, right.” Billie sat down on the couch in front of the cameras.
“As many of you may know, I’m Billie Dean Howard. I’m a psychic medium, and I’ve been working with the dead for decades now. Never expected to make a career out of it. Let alone a whole show!” She laughs off her comment with the members of the crew.
“All jokes aside, I’m incredibly thankful for my career. If it wasn’t for the screen, I wouldn’t have met all the girls… I’ll always be grateful for that. Audrey came to me with the idea for this show, and I have to admit, I was a little nervous. They’ve all become like a family to me. A very complicated family to say the least. The others liked the idea so much despite my fears, so I finally decided it was a good idea.”
Billie cracked a smile at the thought.
“If it wasn’t for Audrey, the show wouldn’t have even aired.”
The camera cuts to a new shot of Audrey Tindall explaining her side of the story.
“Oh, yeah! It was my idea and everything. Billie’s nice like that. She’ll go along with most things as long as it doesn’t ruin her image. I was genuinely surprised she said yes to this by those standards!” Audrey light heartedly laughed, glancing over the camera to see Billie rolling her eyes.
“I can always make everyone go home, you know. Shows over!” Billie’s voice can be heard off screen.
“Oh, shut up Billie.” Audrey waves her away.
The interview continued on as normal. There were a few quick banters exchanged between Audrey and Billie, who stayed off screen. Eventually, Billie left the room to leave Audrey to talk about what the rest of the show would be like.
“Basically, It’s going to show our everyday lives here with all the girls. How we live. Who we really are.” Audrey was always one for the dramatics.
“This ‘Pilot’ episode, if you will, is just an introduction. A little taste of what’s to come!” Her hands added flare to her words.
As Audrey continued explaining the simple mechanics of the show, Ally slipped in through the front door. She gave the actress a small wave.
Audrey’s eyes immediately lit up as she called her girlfriend over. “Sweetheart, hello! Come here!” She quickly stood from her chair and grabbed Ally’s hand, guiding her in front of the camera.
“This is my girlfriend, Ally! Isn’t she simply darling?” Audrey smiled widely as she sat Ally on her lap. Ally wasn’t too keen on being on camera yet.
“Oh yeah, hi! I forgot this was today.” Ally swiped her hair behind her ear, not knowing what to say.
Audrey nearly squealed at seeing her girlfriend so shy.
“You are just bloody adorable.” She gazed back up at the camera as Ally’s cheeks turned a bright shade of red.
“She’s a bit timid about being filmed. I’m used to a crew following me everywhere, but Ally isn’t quite adjusted to it yet.”
The next shot is Ally sitting in the spot Audrey was in, now all alone. She has an awkward expression on her face as if she’s not sure what to talk about.
“Just tell us a little bit about yourself. You’re a politician, right?”
Ally nodded slightly to the camera man.
“I am. Before I got into politics, I owned a restaurant. Still do. I’ve just been really focused on my campaign.”
“And how long have you been with Audrey?”
“U-uh, about two years now.”
“How’d you guys meet?”
“Well, as I said before, I own a restaurant downtown and at that point I was on my own with Oz, my son. I had just divorced my ex wife. I’d been putting all my time into my work. That’s when famous actress Audrey Tindall came into my life. She’d never been in the restaurant before. She was instantly a flirty little thing. When she left, I found her number scrawled on her receipt and well… the rest is history.” Ally’s smile was giant as she explained the story, reminiscing on the past years of her life she had spent falling for the Brit.
“How did you end up here in the house with the rest of the girls?”
“I won’t get too personal, but after a few months of seeing Audrey and how well she got along with Oz, I started making frequent trips to this humble abode. I admit that it was quite a shock meeting everyone for the first time. Though they all took so kindly to Oz and I. We spent more nights here than at our apartment, so Billie invited us to permanently move in. I obviously couldn’t deny her offer. We’ve been here for the last two years.” Ally honestly loved telling this story.
“These lovely ladies couldn’t have come at a better time in my life. I’m so thankful to have them, especially Audrey. They’re all truly one of a kind. I’m so lucky to have such good role models for Oz and people who genuinely care for him. He loves it here, even with the constant bickering.” Ally laughed as she made fun of the banter that constantly rang through the house.
As Ally answered more questions about life in the house and her professions, a snarky blonde with frizzy hair was waiting very impatiently in the other room.
“Do you guys want to see a picture of Oz? I have a couple on my phone-“ Ally began.
“Oh come ON” an annoyed voice rang out.
As Ally began to pull out her cell, the blonde barged into the room. She was definitely not as put together as the others. The woman had a cigarette hanging out of her mouth and was wearing a tattered old dress. Her makeup was completely smudged. She didn’t seem camera ready, but she was definitely acting like she was.
“Ally, seriously, you’ve taken way too long.” She growled. In an instant, she pushed Ally off of her seat. The politician fell onto the floor offscreen with a thud while this new woman crossed her legs.
“Sal, what the hell?!” Ally shouted.
Sally glanced down at her as she took her cigarette between her fingers.
“You were hogging the f%*#$ing camera.”
“So that gives you a right to just physically assault people?”
As Ally stood up, there was a long silence between the two women. The camera was focused on Sally, who looked obviously remorseful for acting on a whim. Her free hand reached out to hold Ally’s.
“Look, I’m sorry. I was anxious.”
Ally remained silent.
“It won’t happen again… I promise. I’m really sorry.”
“Well, you should be.”
“I’ll make it up to you. We’ll go for ice cream later, okay?”
Another silence.
“Okay.” Ally muttered.
“Okay.” Sally replied as the brunette exited the room. She leaned back in her seat and turned her ear toward the door.
“I love you, Ally!” she called out.
There was no answer. Sally shrugged.
“She’ll be fine.” She began, “I’ve done worse.”
“Uh… Okay. You wanna go ahead and introduce yourself?”
A huge grin appeared on Sally’s face.
“I thought you’d never ask!” She exclaimed as she took a drag of her cancer stick.
“The name’s Sally. Sally McKenna. I’m unemployed, BUT I happen to be a social media influencer,” She winked to the camera. “Follow me on instagram, sallythatgirl.”
“You’re a social media influencer, and you only have instagram?”
“Oh god no! I’ve got twitter, youtube, instagram, facebook, you name it! And I just started a tik tok account.” She had a proud look on her face.
“No, but I used to be a musician in the 90’s. That was a bust. Turned to drugs, that was also a bust. I lived in a shit hole for a loooong time. Until Cordelia came along.” She smirked to herself, “Don’t tell her I said this, but… Cordelia saved me. She came by my place looking for one of her friends and we happened to get into conversation. I told her not to pity me. She has such a kind heart that the bitch took me home with her the same day. I’ve been here ever since.”
Sally ashes her cigarette in one of the crew member’s coffee cups nearby.
“Anyway, enough with the sappy shit. I’m really excited to start this show. I have a really good feeling that I’m gonna be a fan favorite.”
“I-I wasn’t finished with that cup of coffee-”
“Sure you were, John! It was empty.” Sally replied. When she glanced back into the cup, she pursed her lips.
“.... My bad. I’ll… Here, I’ll have someone get you some more- DELIA!” She stood up and left the room to go find the Supreme.
“I F&%ED UP, I NEED YOUR HELP!”
After Sally left, a new shot panned on Cordelia Goode. She was already sitting down and completely poised. She handed John a new cup of coffee.
“Sorry about Sally. She can be a bit of a handful.”
“It’s alright. Thank you for making this.”
“It’s no trouble at all.” Cordelia replied with a warm smile.
“So, you were the first one to move in with Billie?”
“Yes, I was. A few years back, she did an episode for her show at Robichaux’s Academy where I taught. At the time, the place was extremely overcrowded. I obviously had too much on my plate. My confidant, Zoe, had been pushing me to go out and find my own place. I had to live somewhere that wasn’t surrounded by screaming girls. When Billie was done filming, we ended up becoming good friends. I was stressed and ended up telling her about Zoe’s idea. She invited me to move in with her, and so I decided to take the chance. Zoe was proud of me and I became a better Supreme because of my decision.”
“What’s it like living here but still fulfilling your responsibilities as Supreme?”
“At first it was challenging to get used to. I hated being away from my girls, but wanted to give myself the chance to adjust. After a few months, I quite enjoyed having my own space and traveling between the two. Billie was really accepting of my responsibilities as Supreme. She never complained of my late hours. Around that time she was usually away filming, so we didn’t see much of each other anyway. It’s a little different now that we have more people living here. I still enjoy it all the same with our little family we’ve created.”
“What’s your schedule like nowadays?”
“Oh, pretty similar! I’ll go back and forth to the Academy to check on my girls and occasionally teach classes when Zoe or Mallory is sick.”
“What about life here?”
“That’s never the same. It’s a constant changing schedule here. Sometimes Billie or Audrey are out filming god knows where. Or Ally has campaigning to do so we help watch Oz. Lana’s always out chasing some new story whenever she gets the chance... Bette and Dot stay home usually. The same with Wilhemina ever since she started working from home; she likes structure and order. Sally is the complete opposite. She stays at home more often than not but is always trying to stir up trouble, just for the hell of it. We all have different schedules but we help each other out when we can. We really are a family.”
“That’s beautiful. Speaking of Ms. Winters, do you know if she’s available for an interview?”
Cordelia chuckled to yourself. “If you can catch her, you can most definitely talk to her.”
Lana is next at the camera. She looks completely composed; she was meant for the camera.
“Miss Winters, thank you for talking with us on such a short notice.”
“Anything for television.” the brunette replied with a smirk.
“What has life been like since the attack?”
There was a sort of tenseness to her position.
“Jumping right in with Bloody Face… I’m fairing fine. He got what he deserved and I’m safe now. Not to mention, my career has been soaring and I’ve finally surrounded myself with a group of people that really care about my well being. Things are so lighthearted around here. I didn’t know I needed to be here, but I can see why Cordelia invited me to stay.”
“You’re a very brave woman, Miss Winters.”
“Thank you, John. I’m more than ready to move on from that situation though.”
“Of course. My bad… So, you worked with Billie on the Briarcliffe series, correct?”
“Yes! That’s where it all began actually.” She had the proudest look on her face. “The Briarcliffe series was one of the best moments of my career. Billie wanted to help me expose all of the awful things that happened there, and we charged in there demanding the truth.”
“And it’s true that Briarcliffe was shut down shortly after the series aired?”
“Correct. Billie and I single handedly took down the most horrific place in America. I’m so grateful for her collaboration. I’m not sure I could have done it without her.”
Lana crossed her legs gracefully, holding her right knee with clasped hands.
“After that, I knew I was safe. It was still incredibly hard to go home alone. Post traumatic stress disorder can do a number on a person” She bit her lower lip, “I spent so many sleepless nights paranoid and utterly terrified of nothing. It grew harder and harder to be by myself, and it was very obvious to everyone that I worked with, including Billie. That’s when she told me to come stay at her commune.”
“Commune?”
“Well, that’s what this place isn’t it?” Lana replied with a laugh. “I was skeptical at first. Living with eight strangers I’ve never met in my life sounded like an absolute nightmare. Though, Billie promised me it would be worth my while. I stayed one night and fell in love with everyone that lives here. It was so nice to not have to be alone, and this house has really made me feel significantly better as far as safety goes. You’re never alone around here, but I don’t mind that. In fact, it makes me feel extremely comfortable.”
“Are you close with any of the girls in particular? Some of the others were discussing how you often can be found with Cordelia Goode when you are home.”
The reporter’s cheeks turned a bright shade of pink.
“I-I mean- Yes, Cordelia and I are great friends. Though, I’ve taken all of them under my wing. Sally’s chaotic, though she’s really just a child deep down that’s craving some sort of attention. Audrey and Ally are both sweethearts. Cordelia is… absolutely wonderful.” Her cheeks grew even brighter in color. “I do have a particular attachment to Bette and Dot, though.”
“Is that because you saved them from Briarcliffe?”
“Indeed, it is. Aren’t you good at researching for an interview? I'm thoroughly impressed, John.”
“Thank you, Miss Winters. Would you care to tell us how you came to the Tattler’s rescue?”
“Perhaps I should let them tell that story.”
Conjoined twins are sitting in front of the camera, rather nervous. One is greeting everyone with a big grin and the other looks suspicious of her surroundings.
“I promise you that we aren’t going to harm you. We’ve heard many wonderful things about the two of you.”
“Oh I know that! Dot just doesn’t trust anyone.” Bette giggled at the camera man. Dot silently glared at her sister then turned back to the camera.
“That’s not true. I’m just far more cautious than my sister.” Dot explained.
“Guarded, maybe.” Bette said under her breath, her smile faltering momentarily.
“Okay… Well how about some questions? Would you be okay with that?”
Both girls nodded.
“I’ve asked nearly everyone this same question. How did you girls arrive here at the house?”
“Oh… well, it was Lana really.” Dot started. “She did a documentary about Briarcliff and we watched it.” Bette began to add. “Our parents were going to send us there… and after seeing the documentary we confronted them about their intentions.” Bette looked to the floor.
“They kicked us out, essentially.” Dot stated with a cross face. “Instead of wallowing in our tears, we packed up and left for LA to find Lana and thank her for keeping us from the awful fate we could’ve had at Briarcliff.” Dot explained.
Bette looked up again at this point. “Oh yes! I want to tell this next part. It wasn’t very hard to find her; we ran into her on the streets of LA! It was magical really. We thanked her and instead of just going about her business, she stayed and asked us questions about what happened and why we were there instead of back home in Florida. After a wonderful conversation with her, we said our goodbyes and went to leave. But she stopped us! We were confused at first. Then she offered us a place to stay since we were on our own. Dot declined, as she doesn’t trust people, but I accepted and convinced Dot to agree as well.” Bette happily told their tale.
“It’s true I was apprehensive, but I’m glad we’re here now. Maybe listening to Bette is a good idea… sometimes.” Dot added and Bette smiled satisfactorily.
“What a moving story ladies. You’re obviously both very different personalities. How do you get on with the rest of the women in the house?”
“We mostly stay to ourselves, really.” Bette answered and Dot nodded.
“Though I enjoy a conversation or two with Wilhemina.” Dot said bashfully.
“Oh they’re awfully annoying sometimes. Always gossiping about the others. I think you forget that I can hear your thoughts Dot.” Bette laughed as she looked at her sister.
Dot consequently glared in her direction. “Shut up.”
“Um, Ow!”
“What did I say before all of this? Don’t say stuff like that Bette!”
“Oh it’s not my fault you’re so reserved. It’s an interview for goodness sake Dot! They ask questions!”
The girls were interrupted by the man behind the camera. “Okay ladies… How about we continue this another time?”
“Sounds wonderful, thank you John!” Bette stated and Dot agreed. “I’d rather not do this ever again.” The girls quickly left the room, still bickering to one another. The camera panned to a redheaded woman dressed in purple from head to toe. Her posture was rather rigid and she was gripping a wooden cane. From outside, the crew could hear Bette and Dot trying to talk to her.
“Mina, it’s your turn!” Bette sung out sweetly.
“Bette, darling, I’m reading.” the woman, Mina, muttered in a disinterested tone.
“But it’s for the tv show! You told Billie you’d do an interview, remember?”
Mina glanced up from her book with her brow cocked.
“What tv show?” she asked.
Bette pointed in the direction of the camera crew and waved to them when she saw that they were still recording. Mina looked in that direction before rolling her eyes.
“I thought Billie said I wouldn’t have to talk?”
“That’s what she told me too-” Dot began.
“Well of course you have to talk, silly! It ain’t every day that you get to be on television!” Bette giggled, “Go on!”
“Bette, I’d rather not.”
“Wilhelmina Venable, you will stop acting like such an introvert and you will go do your interview just like everyone else has done!”
There was a long pause of silence as Mina made eye contact with Dot.
“D… Did you do one?” she asked quietly.
“Unfortunately.” Dot replied.
Wilhelmina groaned before standing up. Leaning upon the cane, she slowly sauntered over to the doorway to the room where the interviews were being held. She looked directly into the camera.
“I’m not going to bother even stepping into the room. All you need to know is that my name is Wilhelmina Venable and I live here. Good day.”
She walked in the opposite direction as Bette and Dot followed her down the hallway.
“Mina that was NOT an interview!” Bette called out.
“Yes it was!” Wilhelmina shouted back.
The camera crew all gazed at each other. A few members shrugged as others began to start cleaning up their equipment.
“I think that’s a wrap on the pilot!”

Tell us about yourself!
Yikes! So I didn't really know where to begin with this one, Well I was born on the banks of the river... Nah! So I googled “fun get to know me questions” and the resulting questionnaire had 371 questions. I decided to answer the first 100!
Strap yourself in, because HERE WE GO!
1. What is your full name?
Red is Riding ;)
2. What does your name mean?
Funny story, so I actually created this alias to partake in some underground hedonistic activities. When I went to start my Tumblr I just decided to use the same one because I’m not very creative and didn’t want to make up a new one. I never thought that this blog would become as popular as it has, and now I couldn’t be bothered changing the name. It does make me laugh though, if only you people knew what I used to get up to under this alias.
3. Are you named after anyone?
Little Red Riding Hood?
4. Does your name make any interesting anagrams?
I don’t think so, but maybe someone smarter than me could figure it out.
5. If you had to change your first name, what would you change it to?
I would probably change my real first name if I could as unfortunately I share it with a reasonably well known facist.
6. Where are you from?
A small European country.
7. Where were you born?
In the capital city of that small European country.
8. Where did you grow up?
In the suburbs of the capital of that small European country.
9. Who did you look like growing up?
A member of the band Hanson, if they had red hair and wore those terrible 2000’s wire rimmed glasses.
10.What are your best characteristics?
Oh gosh, isn’t it embarrassing to talk about your good traits? Especially when the way you see yourself is often so different from the way others see you.
11.What are your favorite things about yourself?
Honestly, I’ve great boobs.
12.Which of your parents are you closest to?
Depends on my mood.
13.Which of your parents are you more like?
I think physically I’m more like my mother, but my character is closer to my father.
14.Are your grandparents still married?
Yep, on one side. On the other side my grandad is dead and has been for a very long time.
15.What relative was important to you growing up & why?
I guess my grandparents, they are the only members of the extended family I ever really saw growing up. I was never close to my uncles, and my aunts and cousins all live in different countries.
16.What is one thing that you’ve never revealed to your parents?
Anything about my love life, we just don’t talk about it. Ever!
17.What would your parents have named you if you were the opposite gender?
I’m actually not sure. I know they had lots of other traditionally female names picked out, but I don’t know any male names they had for me. I’m not sure if they knew early on if I was going to be a girl, would make sense though.
18.What do you call your grandparents?
I call one of my grandmother’s by her first name, and my grandad, grandad.
19.What is your best physical feature?
My boobs!…I have pretty eyes too.
20.What is your biggest accomplishment?
Probably getting into University and graduating top of my class.
21.What is your biggest fear?
Having all my joints simultaneously dislocate.
22.What is your biggest regret?
The way I’ve treated certain people over the years.
23.What is your eye colour?
Blue.
24.What inspires you?
Hope that tomorrow can be better.
25.What is the most important thing in your life?
My family, and my future.
26.What has required the most courage of you in your life so far?
Hummm, I’m really not sure about this one.
27.Who is your favourite actor?
I truly could not name a single actor.
28.Who is your favourite actress?
As above.
29.Who is your favourite celebrity?
I genuinely have no idea.
30.Who is your favourite musician?
Lorde has been getting me through this quarantine, but my favourite singer/band is/are Florence + the Machine. Maybe that dates me.
31.Who’s your favourite person in the world?
I can’t choose just one!
32.What is your favourite childhood memory?
I’m very lucky, I had a really marvellous childhood. I guess I have some great memories of playing with my brother as a child, but I’m not sure I have a favourite memory.
33.What is your favourite colour?
Teal.
34.What is your favourite cultural activity?
I love going to the theatre.
35.What is your favourite drink?
Water is the thing I drink most often. I don’t like tea or coffee, and I only drink alcohol in social settings not alone of an evening.
36.What is your favourite fairytale?
I’m actually not sure. I know it’s not quite the same but I was never allowed to watch the Disney princess films growing up (a lot of which are based on fairytales) so I can’t say I am particularly attached on any. Although, in answering this question I have remembered by blog name so I probably should say Little Red Riding Hood.
37.What is your favourite food?
Potatoes, they are so wonderfully versatile, I will never get bored eating them.
38.What is your favourite holiday destination?
There is so much of the world I have not yet seen and I cannot wait until we’re allowed to travel again. The last big trip I was on was to Canada, Vancouver, and it was amazing.
39.What is your favourite ice-cream flavour?
Ice cream does not agree with me at all, I always thought I was lactose intolerant because of it (I’m not), but I did love a pistachio ice cream as a kid.
40.What is your favourite music genre?
According to Spotify my most listened to genre is “alternative” whatever that means.
41.What is your favourite physical activity?
Hiking.
42.What is your favourite quote?
I don’t believe I have one. I do know someone who has “live laugh love” tattooed on their foot. Take from that what you will.
43.What is your favourite snack?
Tbh I don't really snack (am I coming across as awfully boring in these questions?) I love three big meals a day. I will eat an apple or something if I need something pre dinner.
44.What is your favourite song?
Either Fascination by Alphabeat, Prayer in C by Lily Wood and the Prick, and Robin Schulz, or Brimful of Asha by Cornershop, the Fat Boy Slim Remix. Those songs never fail to put me in a good mood when I need it.
45.What is your favourite sport?
To watch? Rugby. But I am OBSESSED with the Olympics, especially the winter olympics.
46.What is your favourite time of the day?
Early evening.
47.What is your favourite type of clothing?
Dresses…with pockets! Or jumpers, I love a big wooly jumper.
48.What is your favourite way to pass time?
Read.
49.What is the name of your favourite restaurant?
My favourite restaurant is called Dishoom, but unfortunately it has yet to make it to my little European country, so it’s a real treat if I get to eat there.
50.What is your all-time favourite town or city? Why?
I don’t have one.
51.What is your favourite candle scent?
Probably a classic vanilla, but not an overpowering one. The vanilla candle from IKEA is the NICEST.
52.What is your favourite social media channel?
Probably Twitter, although Tumblr is my place for escape.
53.Where’s your favourite place to take an out-of-town guest?
Ugh I hate being the one to choose where we go. I think it’s because I’m a Libra.
54.What was your favourite subject in High School?
Okay now this is a fun fact, I didn’t actually go to school. I was “Home Educated” which is ideologically different form being Home Schooled. There was no curriculum for me to follow so I could basically dick about doing whatever I wanted during the day. I did study Law which I really enjoyed, and I went onto study it at University.
55.What was your least favourite subject in High School?
Again see above. Although I do remember crying every time my father tried to teach me maths. To this day, I’m still not sure how to work out a percentage, let alone anything more advanced than that.
56.What was your favourite TV show when you were a child?
Sabrina the Teenage Witch (the Melissa Joan Heart version) or anything with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in it (have I dated myself again?)
57.What do you love about your favourite TV Show?
They were fun. I wanted to be them!
58.Are you scared of heights?
Nope, but I’m scared of falling and shattering all the bones in my legs.
59.Are you high maintenance?
Definitely not.
60.Are you more inclined to “build your own empire” or unleash the potential of others?
I don’t know what this means, but fuck imperialism.
61.Are you more likely to avoid conflict or engage it head-on?
Ugh, I hate conflict, like I go all trembly, but if there is something amiss I can’t not confront it.
62.Are you a dog person or cat person?
I really adore animals, I had hoped to get a cat during this long and lonely lockdown but my landlord wasn’t keen. If I had more time and space I would love to get a dog, it’s just not feasible in my life at the moment.
63.Are you a fan of any sports team?
Just my national team no matter what the sport.
64.Are you a good cook?
I like to think so.
65.Are you an early adopter or late-adopter?
Depends. I don’t always love change.
66.If you had more courage what would you do differently in your life now?
I don’t think having more courage would change anything in my life right now.
67.What is good about how you are living your life right now?
Oh gosh, I’m so incredibly lucky to have the like that I am living right now. Truly blessed, but at the same time, I have got here because of all my hard work and determination.
68.If you could eliminate one weakness or limitation in your life, what would it be?
I’m not sure if this strictly answers the question, but I wish I could be kinder and more sympathetic to people. I can be harsh on people I care about because I want to see them do well in life and get frustrated when they are doing things that so obviously curtails their ability. I’ve lost friends because of it.
69.Who has left the most impact on your life?
I don’t think I can name just one person.
70.What aspect of your life needs tremendous improvement?
My love life. It’s not existent. Truly. I don’t even have a far away crush on anyone at the moment. I desperately want to experience romantic love, but it’s scary and you have to allow yourself to be soft and vulnerable which is not something that I am very good at. I also have a lot of negative thoughts/self doubts about whether I am good enough to be in a relationship, or worthy enough for love. It’s stupid, obviously, everyone, flaws and all is worthy of love, but because of things that have happened/been said to me I do kind of have this negative chatter of “who could ever love me” or fear people thinking “god love the poor guy who ends up with her.” All that said, I have never actually met anyone who I’ve really liked, let alone anyone who has liked me back. The closest I’ve got, is I’ve been in lust twice in my life with guys, who objectively speaking, I would never think I would be attracted to.
71.What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen in your life?
I’ve see a lot of weird things tbh, but the first one that springs to mind is that every year we used to go to these big gatherings of families who home educate their children. Now, there are two groups of people that tend to home educate their children 1) EXTREMELY religious families who don’t want their children going to secular schools, and 2) new age hippies who don’t want their children to have to conform to the rigours of school. When these two groups meet…it is interesting. The religious families usually have a lot of children (10+ in many cases), while the hippy families wander around semi-nude and breast feed their children until their grown (7+ years in many cases). So at these home education conferences, the hippy parents would be wandering around, leaky boobs out, and the religious babies would be wandering around because their parents have too many children to keep track of. Whenever one of these babies wandered within range of the hippy parents, they’d take them, and latch them onto their breasts. Absolutely bizarre stuff.
72.Who is the best teacher you’ve ever had?
Myself.
73.Who is the biggest pack rat you know?
I don’t know what this means.
74.Who is the first person you call when something exciting happens?
If it’s a big enough deal to call someone, I’ll call my parents, but usually if something exciting happens I’ll just message my friend group.
75.Who is the first person you call when something horrible happens?
Same as above.
76.Who is the worst boss you’ve ever had?
I had to sue her to get her and her husband to pay me for the work I did.
77.Can you close your eyes and raise your eyebrows?
Yep? Can you not?
78.Can you do a split?
No, but I want to learn! I have really tight hamstrings so that would be good to stretch them.
79.Can you touch your nose with your tongue?
No. Can you?
80.Can you whistle?
Yeah.
81.Can you dance?
Everyone can dance, the question is whether you can dance well or not! I have no rhythm or style, but get me on a dance floor and I’ll bop my socks off.
82.Do you remember your dreams?
Sometimes.
83.Do you save old greeting cards and letters? Throw them away?
I save them for a while, but I’m not overly sentimental.
84.Do you sing in the shower?
Never.
85.Do you sleep with the lights on or off?
Off.
86.Do you spell the colour as grey or gray?
Grey you weirdo!
87.Do you take any pills or medication daily?
Never.
88.Do you prefer kissing or cuddling?
I like kissing because it’s hot and fiery and I think I’m reasonably good at it. Cuddling is the best but it’s something I struggle with as I find it far too intimate. See my answer to Q70.
89.Do you prefer that people shoot straight with you or temper their words? Why?
Hit me between the eyeballs with the truth, please! I just like people who are clear and direct about their intentions, it means everyone knows where they stand.
90.Do you prefer Titanic or The Notebook?
I saw a black and white documentary about the Titanic when I was a very small child (maybe about 5 or 6) and for a long time I thought that was the movie Titanic! I have seen neither the real film Titanic nor the Notebook, although from what I know of the latter I don’t think it would be my thing.
91.Do you have a catchphrase?
I don’t think so, but maybe people in my life would be better at answering this question. What is it that I say a lot?
92.Do you have a garden?
I wish!
93.Do you have a hidden dream that you’ve never shared with anyone?
I’m taking this to mean a goal or aspiration, and not something that I have subconsciously dreamed and been too embarrassed to share? I would love to write a book one day. I’m work on something periodically but I’m not sure if anything will ever come from it, a gal can dream though!
94.Do you have a tattoo?
None! I’m kind of a commitment-phobe, I’m not sure if you’ve noticed?
95.Do you have a whole lot of acquaintances or just a few very close friends? Why?
Both! I know lots of people in passing, but the people I consider actual friends, who know what is going on in my life at any given time, I could count on my fingers.
96.Do you have any allergies?
Not that I’m aware of…
97.Do you have any birthmarks? If so, where?
I used to have one on my back, but it’s faded as I’ve aged.
98.Do you have pets?
Not at the moment.
99.Do you hold any convictions that you would be willing to die for?
That is a big question. I think however, if there was a guarantee, that sacrificing my life would make the lives of others immeasurably better, I would be scarified. I have plenty of convictions that I’m willing to protest/riot/go to prison for.
100.Do you carry a donor card?
Bit ominous after Q99 but yes I do, and my driver’s licence states that I’m a donor.
I’m not sure if this is at all what you were hoping for in asking this, but I honestly had the best fun answering these questions! :)

Why do people hate BTS Jimin?.( A topic that needs to be explained. )
So I thought to create a post about the reasons that made some people to hate Park Jimin, also known as the lead vocalist + dancer of the popular Kpop band BTS. There are plenty of reasons that led some people to hate Jimin and today i thought to explain few of those.
Why do some people hate Park jimin?. Let’s begin.
1. Because he is gorgeous.
Tumblr media
Yes, being gorgeous also attracts other’s hate. As far as i know, some fan girls who call themselves ‘armys’ post hate comments about jimin in social media but when someone asks them to stop because it harms jimin’s reputation, they never accept that they did wrong. They just try to get away from the situation while defending themselves.
I have seen a lot of comments about jimin looking feminine. Some people use this one excuse to humiliate him but let me to say this one thing. Looking feminine is not something that you should be ashamed of but using someone’s appearance to bully him/her is something that you should definitely be ashamed of.
Jimin is not the only one who looks feminine to these people who are from different countries, all around the world. They compare majority of kpop idols to females because they ware makeup. The Korean body type in general is a little bit of skinny and less muscular than the other races. Also average height of korean men is a bit shorter than the other races. Koreans have less facial and body hair than stereo typically other races. So in Korea this is what most of the boys who are in their 20′s look like. Kpop idols also ware makeup and take good care of their skin. They also have to dress well in order to look good when they perform so there is nothing to be surprised of them looking a bit feminine. Even though some guys who are famous for being muscular in south korea are not all ripped or overly muscular. So it’s not wise to label jimin as a feminine boy without getting to know things well.
On the other hand, is that a crime to look feminine?. I had to ask this because some people assumed that jimin is a transgender. Is that one of your business?. It doesn’t matter to us aka his fans since we are here to support him and bts, we are not here to dig into his personal life. Personally i don’t think that he is a transgender because there is no proof. His childhood photos proves that he is a male from birth.
Even though i have explained some things about how is it a normal thing to look a bit feminine in south korea, i like to say this too. If i am being honest, i accept that jimin looks a bit feminine than his fellow band mates. I think that’s because he wears dangling earrings, sparkling necklaces , silver rings and some times even chokers. He posts pictures on twitter with all fluffy hair, pouty lips and wide eyes. He also filters his photos to look more attractive but is that a crime.? He just likes to look beautiful and no one can judge him for doing that. He can do whatever he wants with his life and with his body.
These fan girls who are into their different biases want to find an excuse to throw hate at Park jimin and that’s why they keep using his appearance like this. They are just jealous because he is more good looking than them even though he is a boy.
The simple word’ handsome’ is not worthy to describe jimin neither the word ‘beautiful.’ The most suitable word to describe his amazing looks is the word called ‘gorgeous’.
2. Because he has a kind heart.
Tumblr media
Jimin truly has a kind heart. Most of the armys know this fact. When something bad happens to someone jimin knows, he is the first to get worried. He cares about other’s opinions and their needs individually. When it comes to taking care of his band mates, he is unstoppable. He cares about his band mates so much and he shows it often to the whole world. There is no need to show, his band mates have already accepted that he is the most caring one in their group. When someone from his band gets injured, he is the first to worry. He proceeds to make them happy no matter what. He often tells others to not to worry about him even though he gets hurt some times.
Not only his band mates get to see this emotional side of jimin. He also loves animals a lot. The way he treats to v’s puppy is so amazing. It makes me to think that he will be a great dad in the near future.
Jimin often make donations to educational programs. He helps his school a lot and he is so sweet to his tutors.
I can’t still believe that a person who is sweet as jimin getting this much hate from some people. so i want to remind this,
People who are heartless can’t stand people who have hearts.
3. Because he is talented.
Tumblr media
“Why jimin got selected to bts?”. I saw this comment when i was reading some comments of a jimin fmv. I laughed at the second i finished reading it. This is what called jealousy. When these people see jimin getting popular because of his hard work, they start to talk bad about him instead of genuinely being happy about what he achieves.
Anyways, i have the answer to this person’s question.
Jimin got selected to bts just because he is talented enough. I can talk about how talented he is for days, still his list of talents will not end. He is the most talented person i have ever seen if i am being honest. He is a dance god and he proves it every time they perform on stage. Plus he is not a member of the bts dance line if the way he dance is not that good. Him, j hope and jungkook are the ones who help other members when it comes to learning new choreographies. Jin himself admitted that jimin helps him a lot to learn new techniques when it comes to dance.
Also he is a great singer. I don’t have to explain this since practically everyone in this fandom knows this. But i gotta say that he can nail those high notes so well. That’s what most of the people expect from a great singer right?. Also his voice suits him really well. The way he sings can make you feel like you are floating in the air. His voice can make you feel relaxed and calm.
All the members of bts admired the way jimin performs on stage.
By the way if jimin is not this much talented, bts would never be able to get this much popularity. So people who always find bad about jimin should know that jimin plays an important role in bts.
4. Because he can be both sexy and cute.
Tumblr media
People also hate him because he is sexy. He got some nice abs and sexy thighs. Even though he is not that much tall, his body is still perfect. I found him so sexy in blood sweat and tears era. He was just so amazing, he still is. He has this sexy look that can attract both males and females alike.
Tumblr media
He is also very cute if you ask me. Especially when he does aegyo. Even the members can’t handle his level of aegyo. Personally i think that he has this natural cuteness and sometimes he behaves like a cute lil kitten. I am so done with this human jimin who can play both cute and sexy roles.
I figured out that some of the shippers who ship different ships label his cute and clingy behavior towards his fellow members as a slutty thing. This is a serious situation. i know that everyone has a right to ship members with each other but no one has the right to call him slutty. He can’t be a slut just because he likes skinship with his band mates. It’s just his nature and he likes to get love and attention from others. if it doesn’t bother his 6 band mates then why does it bother you?.
If you don’t like him, then simply skip his pictures, videos and stuff. if you love your ship, then live with your ship forever even if it’s not real but never try to throw hate at him.
5. Because he is popular.
Tumblr media
Yes, No matter how haters try to let him down. There are people who love jimin from the bottom of their hearts. There are people who adore his hard work. There are people who think that he deserves everything he got so far. He got some great friends, got so many fans who love him and adore him. He is indeed lucky. He got the attention of famous american hosts and even khalid likes him.
but i still think that he deserves more.
He don’t deserve to get a single hate comment according to me because he have done nothing wrong other than giving his best to us, armys.
6. Because BTS loves him.
Tumblr media
BTS loves jimin a lot, not only because he is another member but because of his amazing personality. Even though he is not the youngest, they still treat him like that. They all know that jimin has some insecurities due to these hate comments. so they are ready to protect him no matter what.
There are people who are jealous about this too. I have seen the way of some jk biases are complaining about jimin being treated like the youngest. i mean how immature can a person be.?. they are all like an one family, so what if they treat him like the youngest?. jungkook is obviously the youngest but in korea , the youngest one is the one who always acts cute. so they treat him like the youngest sometimes. jungkook himself treats him like that too.
7. Because some people marry his posters.
Tumblr media
All of you know this right?. i am not going to add salt to it. No way but there are people who are even ready to marry jimin’s posters. Not all the people and fans are jimin haters. So haters hate him for this too. They are quick to label him as a gay idol just because this man married his posters.
Being gay is not a crime, he can be gay if he wants to. What’s your problem?.
So i wrote this just because i felt like doing so. I did not mean to hurt anyone’s feelings but if someone gets hurt from this post, he or she is a person who hates jimin.
I want you to say this loud with me.
‘Haters gonna hate , players gonna play’
‘live a life man.’

I have been waiting for an article like this. What a relief it was to read it. As much as I appreciate the hype and attention the group is getting in whatever capacity so that their dreams are achieved, watching interviews where interviewers clearly have not researched the group is honestly painful and disrespectful. They undermine the intelligence and artistry of the group and their fanbase. They ask them the usual fan fodder questions: unflattering and intrusive questions about their fans, their love/sex life -- the typical things one would ask a manufactured boyband as if the boys have no creative licence or insightful explorations to offer. It makes me cringe.
As attractive as the group is, that is not what brought me and many others here. During my very first watch of 'Idol', despite the flashy visuals, I initially read the lyrics. I was so intrigued; it did not read like a typical pop song at all. A rudimentary Google search led me to discover just how much of their own work they write and produce. My heart was actually pounding when I read over lyrics before hearing the songs as if they were poetry; and it really is poetry. I then found the song that accompanied the words, listened, and read again. What was being said in the songs genuinely resonated with me. Bapsae and First Love were especially powerful for me to read and hear on a personal level. It was a little frightening and almost cathartic to read some of my innermost submerged thoughts brought to the surface by someone else like that. The beautiful visuals and attention to detail were an added bonus.
When I got my first copy of their Love Yourself: Answer album I immediately flipped to the credits. I have been studying music and pop culture for decades now and I am still astounded by the level of work and thought they personally put into the creation of their music. The writing, the performing, the recording, the actual composition of original music. It is seldom done so authentically, especially for a group with their level of stardom power. And most impressive of all, they have always done it this way, even when they were just starting out. They were authentic artists from scratch; it's what got RM through the doors of BitHit in the first place. He was composing music by the time he was 14. That's especially rare in this day and age that they would hold out in the name of authenticity. Compounded with their good looks, it would have been so easy for them to simply let someone else speak for them, take the money and fame and run. But that's not what this group is about. They held out and worked tirelessly to tell their own stories in the name of honesty and integrity.
So many of the groups and singers I adore from the 50's, 60's, 70's -- even in writing and creating their own music, a significant portion of them did not attempt or thoroughly delve into the art of self-production. It's so rare. These Korean musicians are artists who are writing about things unique to our generation; things people don't want to publicly talk about, things that desperately need to be said that aren't being said by other artists. It embarrasses me when all of their hard work and efforts are reduced to their physical appearance or popularity.
As she mentions in the article, this is not an unheard of theme. It is something that frequently happens in art predominantly consumed by women; look at how our society perceives fan fiction, or romantic comedies and novels; look at how demonized Disco was as it lent power and a voice to female and lgbt artists and audiences. There is a tendency to attempt to discredit art and artists who create work that just so happens to speak and give power to a largely female audience and that isn't a coincidence.
This writer completely encapsulates the artistic direction, political standpoints, and socio-cultural relevance of what BTS are doing without discrediting their artistic integrity on the basis of their visuals, appeal to women, or fluency in English. Like many artists before them who wield such power over their audience, their message threatens the norm and status quo by encouraging others to think individually, have self respect, self discovery, self love. That we need not conform to predetermined expectations and guidelines and instead find our own path. That is a powerful truth to offer the world. It is disappointing that many individuals writing on them in the media are missing that due to lack of research or a lack of effort to overcome the language barrier as well as boyband stereotypes and misconceptions. It is such a profoundly sad missed opportunity.
They did it to Little Richard in the 1950's: They publicly insulted and shamed him, questioning his credibility and worth as both a man and an artist who composed some of the most iconic rock songs in music due to the fact that he wore makeup and embraced aspects of femininity. Sound familiar?
They did it to The Beatles in the early sixties; the press hardly talked about them as viable, serious musicians until they made the decision to step back from touring in 1966 and exclusively dedicate their time and focus to studio work. If you look at interviews with the Beatles during the height of Beatlemania you will see a pattern; that same embarrassing line of questioning that focuses entirely on their physical appearances, "crazy" fanbase, attention from women, love lives -- with so little interest and research done about their work and original compositions. Again, sound familiar?
During the height of Queen in the seventies the incredible, ground-breaking work they were bringing to the world stage was often left to the wayside in interviews with interviewers asking rude and pervasive questions about the nature of Freddie Mercury's sex life. Again, sound familiar?
When artists challenge the status quo publicly, those who wish to maintain it (the silver spoons) seek out ways to discredit the artistic integrity of those who do in an effort to dampen their credibility; because if you paint a person with power in an unflattering light, you may convince others that what they have to say doesn't matter.
Mark my words; as the members of BTS get older their production levels and creative licence will inevitably mature and grow with them. BTS has what a lot of other famous artists in their position do not have: experience in the field of composition and production. Even if many individuals are not ready to take them seriously as artists now, believe me when I say that as long as BTS stick to their guns and continue to push boundaries and create authentically, there will eventually be no other choice but to hear them out and acknowledge them for their artistic integrity and socio-political influence.
I know I just wrote a novel here, but I hope that everyone understands how rare and important BTS are as artists; that what is being done to them has also been done to some of the most well-respected and revered artists of our time. I'm not comparing their work, I'm comparing their experiences based on levels of fame. Not many people achieve the level of fame that BTS has, but there is a history of invalidation aimed at artists who do reach it, especially those who write the hard conversations into their music and maintain artistic integrity.
With that said, what BTS is doing right now has also never been done before. I know the ARMY has been there for them long before they were famous and I also know that they will be there for them as they continue to grow and mature as people and artists. Don't let yourself get discouraged by the attitudes of those who are not yet ready to accept them as viable musicians and artists; they have the advantage of speaking for themselves. Those who seek to discredit them will end up on the wrong side of history as they always do, and BTS has already broken enough ground and set records that will secure them on the right side of it.

So I ended up being so bummed out about the shorts that I neglected to do a write-up for The Lego Batman Movie, which I saw the same day. But TLBM came up like 5 times on my dash today bc bigoted critics are lambasting it for being “pro-gay” so I thought it’d be a good time to talk about how much I enjoyed it! I don’t think I liked it quite as much as the original Lego Movie, but it wasn’t really trying to be the same kind of movie as TLM. It wasn’t quite aiming for that meta angle, and I don’t think it necessarily needed to. It was just a super fun movie -- and one that was really gratifying in some ways to someone who got really burned out on the comics.
Full review and slight spoilers below the cut.
So the basic plot of the movie is what you’d gather from the trailers: Batman (aka Bruce Wayne) is a weird reclusive loner who lives in his giant mansion/bat cave with no one but the butler who raised him, and he has to learn to stop doing shit himself and being such a goddamn asshole. It was kind of nice because he was constantly called out on the stuff that he’s gotten away with doing in a lot of Bat media. Barbara Gordon talking about how he never created lasting institutional/structural solutions to problems, but instead fed his ego by punching poor people felt really good haha. (More on Babs later.) It’s your basic “dickhead has to learn how to use social skills” film, but with a lot of humor and heart that prevents it from getting sappy. And Batman seriously never gets away with his bullshit. He is constantly called on the way he hurts people, and instead of the somewhat shallow lip service that has always been paid to his antihero status, I felt like this film really interacted with those ideas on a hopeful and emotional level. He wasn’t treated like a villain because he was ~dark and brooding~. He was treated like a villain because he went off half-cocked because of his own issues, and because he didn’t care who he hurt in the process. It wasn’t just a story about Batman learning to make friends -- it’s a story about Batman learning to set aside his own ego so he can work together with public officials to create long-term stability and safety for the town he purports to care about. It’s a movie that calls for kindness, compassion, and accountability in crime-fighting -- and in a world torn with debates about increased militarization and police brutality, that’s a conversation that’s pretty damn important.
The audience is there for a comedy, though, and the movie is hilarious. I was cracking up before the movie even technically started, because Batman’s narration and criticism of all the production logos was great. And I basically kept laughing the entire time. The movie pokes loving fun at pretty much every kind of Batman media that exists, from the biggest blockbuster movie to the smallest limited run mini, and there are tons of sly little jokes that will make a comics fan laugh. (No spoilers, but one of the more overt and more hilarious comics jokes was basically the entire Nightwing segment. It is not to be missed.) The characters are all incredibly endearing, especially a shockingly adorable Robin, and I genuinely enjoyed watching them go on their batshit adventures. I won’t give away where the plot goes, but I will say that things just kept escalating until I was impressed (and cracking up) at how bizarre things got. Just really, thoroughly enjoyable. The slapstick humor and mile-a-minute jokes could have gotten old very quickly, but the warmth and heart really helped pull things together.
The interpretations of the characters were all pretty interesting. Robin’s childlike wonder and naivete was really emphasized, whereas Alfred’s RAF background came quickly to the fore. Barbara Gordon was perhaps the most interesting interpretation of them all. As a disabled ex-comics fan, I’ve always had pretty complicated feelings about Barbara and I was nervous going into this. I will say right now that as far as I could tell, there were no real allusions made to Oracle in this film. I am bummed about that. Babs made the transition to Oracle before I was even born, and her journey has been important to me. (But I guess that’s a rant for another day.) But the Barbara that was introduced in TLBM wasn’t really Batgirl, either, despite allusions being made to the moniker. She’s the new commissioner of Gotham City, and she’s strong, fierce, intelligent, and committed to making structural changes to Gotham’s criminal justice system in order to create a safer environment for both Gotham’s innocent citizens and its seedier ones. She refuses to just delegate her duties to Batman, and she believes that things can be so much better than they have been -- and she’ll work hard to accomplish that. Perhaps most striking of all, despite Batman’s obvious infatuation with her, she does not reciprocate his advances. She wants to be his ally and his friend, but she is her own woman. (”If you call me Batgirl, does that mean I can call you Batboy?”) She’s not the protagonist of this film (and after three lego franchise films, they really are due for a female protagonist) but she’s also no sidekick. She advocates for responsibility, but she’s not the ~boring nag~ that female characters are often reduced to. She’s the voice of hope and reason in a culture of toxic masculinity, and Batman has to realize that her ideas are just as important, if not more, than his. She wasn’t Oracle, but I found that I still ended up really loving this version of Barbara.
Finally, all that gay shit! As I said, Batman has an obvious crush on Barbara. But he definitely has an overtly homoerotic relationship with the Joker, too. Their foemance is constantly put in terms of a relationship, with the main thrust of the plot being inspired by the Joker wanting Batman to pay more attention to him and treasure him as his most important adversary -- frankly, the Joker wants to be Batman’s most important person. I was tickled to find after I got home that I was not the only person that half-expected a kiss in one of their final tension-laden scenes. If Batman had to grow to appreciate his family (re: Robin and Alfred) and his political allies (re: Barbara), he also had to grow to appreciate the Joker, and perhaps in a more heated and intimate way than any of the others. It really is a story about their relationship, strange as that sounds. It’s not a canon gay pairing. Batman has a thing for Barbara, and the Joker and Harley are a (remarkably healthy and cute) item. But damn if it’s not basically rolling around in all that subtext. It’s the kind of film a fanficcer would have a field day with, frankly. There’s a lot of room for exploration. (Basically, if you like Kate Beaton’s Nemesis comics, you’ll like the Batman/Joker relationship in this film.)
Hilariously, the other potential pairing in this film is Bruce Wayne/Batman. It’s never directly stated, but I’m pretty sure Robin thought they were a thing for much of the movie. He definitely thought he was being co-parented by the two of them. And he was psyched! Robin loved having two dads! He went from having no dads to two dads! (“It’s raining dads!”) Like there is zero judgment from anyone about the concept of Robin having two adoptive fathers, even though it was never explicitly stated that people thought his two fathers were dating. (Related -- I kind of want to write fic about the Bruce/Batman that people lowkey thought was going on.) Like both of his dads were shitty, but that was clearly portrayed as a Batman thing, not a gay parenting thing. The film actually had strong messages about the importance of adoption, both by exploring Batman’s relationship with his new son and by exploring Alfred’s relationship with Batman.
tl;dr, the fundies aren’t crazy. The movie is definitely homoerotic and pro-gay parenting. AND I LOVED THAT.
Anyway, overall I really enjoyed the movie. It wasn’t the deepest film in the world, but it was really, really fun. I liked the plot and the characters and the jokes were great. There’s a lot there for both the passing fan of Batman and the superfans who’ve read comics for years. And frankly, it’s the kind of modern film that the franchise has needed for a while. It dissects some of the messages that have been put forth in many of the movies and comics that have starred Batman (and that have made him popular amongst angry wannabe grimdark vigilante dudes for decades) and shows why they’re actually quite dangerous on both a personal and societal level. Really good film.

im not sure if this counts as a request or not and you can absolutely delete it if it does but... if im not mistaken mod twogami has a fondness for broadway so... could they recommend any shows? i've been trying to get into more shows and such...!
It doesn’t count as a request! don’t worry, you’re fine! oh my gosh though I love Broadway SO MUCH I am SO HAPPY to make a list for you I LOVE talking about stuff I like!
one warning I should maybe give is that I tend to be more into modern musical theater, so the majority of shows I really like are from after like 2000 if that’s okay with you. I’d be happy to recommend some older stuff if you’d prefer, I’m just not as knowledgable about it. another warning: I am incapable of brevity. this list is way too long… i’m so fuckin sorry… i’m really really sorry.
comedy:
♡ the producers (2001). the show that really got me into musical theater. it also won more tony awards than any show, ever. about two broadway producers who try to create the worst musical ever, ergo hilarity ensues. maybe not the best pick if you’re uncomfortable with content that makes fun of nazis, but if it helps, the writer is jewish (and I’m jewish and don’t have a problem with it). there’s also some adorable gays, and a movie version that’s very faithful to the show, so that’s nice. you want the 2005 movie if you want songs (the 1968 movie isn’t a musical). also, if you like this, young frankenstein is a great show by the same creators with a similar sense of humor.
♡ the book of mormon (2010).two mormon missionaries go to uganda. absolutely hilarious. pretty crass though, and i’m sure problematic as hell (by the creators of south park, if that’s any indication), so be warned. but it’s just… such a fun time.
♡ a gentleman’s guide to love and murder (2014).a rare musical comedy that’s actually not that crass. about a man in edwardian england who learns he’s ninth in line to inherit an earldom, so he kills everyone in his way to the position. actually a very lighthearted comedy. bonus points for a love triangle that turns into a really cute poly triad.
♡ avenue q (2003).sesame street, but about issues faced by people in their mid-twenties: a kindergarten teacher tries to snag a boyfriend, a recent college grad tries to find his purpose, a gay republican struggles to come out of the closet, gary coleman is just kind of there. song titles include “the internet is for porn” and “everyone’s a little bit racist.” puppet sex. a good time.
♡ a funny thing happened on the way to the forum (1962).slapsticky, very clever, hilarious if you like roman history, funny even if you don’t. about a roman slave who wants to earn his freedom, his young master falling in love for the first time, pirates, soldiers, sex workers, a lot of stuff. the movie is very good. I’m also partial to the 1996 cast album because I love Nathan Lane.
drama:
♡ sweeney todd (1979).just… a masterpiece of a musical score tbh. about a barber who seeks revenge for his tortured past. people get baked into pies. if you haven’t noticed, i really like musicals that make light of murder (although i’m guessing you like funny media about murder too, since you came to a danganronpa blog to ask this?). funny, moving, dark, creepy, powerful. I’ve never actually seen the movie and don’t really recommend it from what I’ve heard, but a production of the show is on DVD with most of the original cast, and it’s definitely worth a watch. also, if you like this, i recommend p much anything stephen sondheim’s ever written. he’s a genius.
♡ spring awakening (2007).takes place in the late 19th century, but is very, very relevant to issues kids face today. covers stuff like the importance of sexual education, child abuse, the pressure placed on kids by school, and the confusion teenagers go through when discovering sexual desire. very heavy, but very beautiful (note: this is maybe the musical I know that is the most difficult to get a sense of the plot by just listening to the score, so I’d recommend maybe reading a plot summary or watching a bootleg or something. there was a cool production last year where a lot of the cast was deaf and it was bilingual in english and asl! idk if there’s a bootleg of that anywhere, but it was a good time). tw for rape, suicide, abortion, child abuse… yeah, it’s dark.
♡ next to normal (2009).about a family dealing with their mom’s mental illness, and covers stuff like how her life is affected by her illness, how fucked up the process of getting treatment is, and how mental illness affects her relationship with the people around her. I find it very realistic, very moving, and very relatable. of course tw for mental illness and suicide. i am dan goodman.
♡ natasha, pierre, and the great comet of 1812 (2012).just reopened on broadway! based on part of war and peace, so you’ll know the plot of war and peace and look really smart. about a woman who gets swept up in an affair while her husband is at war in 19th century russia. the plot isn’t really what’s interesting so much as the gorgeous musical score and really cool things they did with the staging / mixing the 19th century and the modern day.
stuff that’s a mix of the two genres:
♡ the frogs (2004).a comedy that gets more and more serious until it’s… not really a comedy anymore. dionysus and his slave go to the underworld to bring back george bernard shaw and make the world right again. shakespeare is there. hades is gay. was on broadway for all of like four months and is pretty damn obscure, but it’s SO GOOD, I promise.
♡ heathers: the musical (2014).another comedic musical about murder. I love comedies about murder. a girl befriends her high school’s popular clique and gets a sort of fucked up boyfriend. shit goes down. I feel like it does a very good job of representing what high school is really like (my high school experience, anyway), and is a good mix of funny and serious. heavy tw for suicide and mental illness (and briefly for eating disorders, but it’s just a couple of comments).
♡ matilda the musical (2010).based on the roald dahl book! about a little girl who is extremely intelligent, but is surrounded by neglectful parents and an abusive headmaster – so she fights back against them. what a genuinely fun, heartfelt time. great lyrics, super creative, and has a scene where someone eats a whole cake, which is always a plus and very relatable (note: im twogami, what were you expecting). tw for child abuse, but the musical is meant for kids, so it’s not very graphic.
♡ my fair lady (1957).thought maybe I should throw in some older stuff as well. early 1900s england, an upper class linguist asshole tries to turn a lower class flower seller into a “lady.” the movie is very, very good. is based on a very feminist play but was made into a slightly misogynistic romance for hollywood, so I’d recommend reading pygmalion if you’re unsatisfied with the ending (but it’s not like the movie doesn’t do its fair share of calling out higgins’s misogyny).
♡ 1776 (1969).also has a very good movie. about the founding fathers and the signing of the declaration of independence. maybe don’t watch this if you’re mad that hamilton is glorifying slave owners (note: I like hamilton, but I didn’t put it on this list because I’m kind of tired of it by now, and anyway I’m sure you know about it). a very good mix of funny and historically accurate.
anyway I hope you enjoy this list and can forgive me for… info dumping rlly heavily on u… love u, hope ur havin a good day, thanks for letting me talk about this. tell me if you end up checking out any of these shows and liking them! - Mod Twogami

How Inspiring Brands Give Thanks on Social Media
Happy Thanksgiving to all those in the United States who celebrate!
I hope you’re disconnecting from digital devices and spending at least a little quality time with your friends and loved ones IRL today. If your Thanksgivings are anything like mine, I’ll bet you could use a little distraction to help you stay sane while dodging your aunt’s probing questions about your love life and heated family debates on politics (or while letting your food coma runs its course).
Plenty of businesses recognize their loyal fans and followers with special giveaways, discounts, and other rewards (content-related or otherwise); but more can take a little extra effort to dedicate team resources to content that simply expresses gratitude – to fans, followers, customers, or even their own employees – whether or not it’s tied to a sales pitch or promotion.
Take a little extra effort to dedicate team resources to #content that simply expresses #gratitude. @joderama Click To Tweet
In the spirit of Joe Pulizzi’s recent love letter to the CMI team and community, I thought I’d share thoughtful ways companies have used their social media pulpits (and other content platforms) to give thanks to their audiences.
From grand gestures of goodwill to simple social shout-outs, the following efforts are just a sample of the ways your brand can demonstrate its genuine appreciation to those who make your business successes possible.
Simple pleasures
Saying thank you doesn’t require a huge campaign or big budget. A simple acknowledgment can go a long way (and pet pictures never hurt).
Animals Rule
It always hits me right in the “feels” when I see pet-rescue post-adoption success stories and photos on the organizations’ Facebook pages to thank new pet parents for adopting instead of shopping for a furry companion. And some – like southern California-based nonprofit Animals Rule – take it a step further by mailing (and socially sharing) postcards with a photo collage of all their rescues that found forever homes that year. It’s a great way for them to thank everyone who adopted, donated, or otherwise supported their efforts to care for the well-being of homeless pets.
.@animalsruleorg says thanks w/ a postcard of all rescues adopted during year. @joderama #contentmarketing Click To Tweet
Ellie Fund
An organization that provides free services to breast cancer patients and their families, the Ellie Fund also recognizes donor contributions through Facebook. This recent post thanks a group of students who participated in its Students for Hope program during Breast Cancer Awareness Month:
More elaborate displays of affection
Of course, giving thanks isn’t just for nonprofits and cause-based organizations. Plenty of B2B and B2C businesses also use content marketing to show appreciation to their brand fans and followers.
Mini
One of the most popular methods is to recognize individual fans publicly through user-generated media campaigns, photo contests, or tags in a social media post. Mini runs a monthly photo challenge where brand fans can share photos that fit a relevant theme (such as October’s #FitsInMyMini challenge) for a shot at getting their submissions showcased on the brand’s Facebook and Instagram channels.

Dropbox
Another thanks-giving technique content marketers can explore is to make an event of reaching key brand milestones – like hitting certain sales or social goals – or celebrating demonstrations of qualities the brand values.
When Dropbox hit the 500-million-user milestone, it thanked customers with a fun Facebook post and infographic:
Bombas
When sockmaker Bombas reached its 10-year goal to sell a million pairs of socks – and donated an equal number of pairs to homeless shelters – in less than three years, the company marked the occasion with a thank-you video shared on Facebook and the Bombas website.

REI
Another event-centric display of gratitude comes from REI. Growing frustrated with increasingly frenzied Black Friday sales stunts, the intrepid outdoor brand encouraged its consumers – and paid its employees – to reclaim the day by spending it outdoors rather than crawling (and brawling) their way through store aisles looking for discounts. The REI co-op will close its doors once again on Black Friday, and, to kick off this year’s movement, it inspired others to follow suit and #OptOutside with a new video.

Barkbox
While one-time or once-a-year recognition is great, brands can use social media to honor fan participation in more enduring ways. For example, I’ve adored just about every piece of content pet product service Barkbox has shared with me through its newsletters and social channels. But my invitation to join its Barkbox Ambassadogs community on Facebook has been a gift that keeps on giving. The invitation-only page is where the brand’s most … uh … passionate and engaged fans (I’ll stop short of calling them “rabid” for obvious reasons) can congregate to share pics and stories of their own pups, as well as view Barkpost company news, products, and new content before the public can get their paws on it.

All-out lovefests
Expressing your brand’s appreciation is one thing. But then there are those content efforts where companies go above and beyond to demonstrate all-out adoration of their fans – and give consumers reasons to love them back just as much.
Zappos
This year, shoe enthusiasts were treated to a traveling road show courtesy of Zappos. The company’s Friends With Benefits tour is a multicity pop-up shopping and entertainment experience wrapped up in a renovated shipping container. What’s even better is that the event activities and merchandise are curated to suit each host city’s unique culture – bringing together music by local artists, collections of top styles participants can purchase, and free food and drinks from the area’s favorite food trucks. Zappos tops the experience off with free pet adoptions in conjunction with local shelters. There’s still time to vote for your city to be the next stop on the tour; and you can also check out the making-of video.

Denny’s
Taking events in a more virtual direction, Denny’s produced a video featuring popular animated characters from its Grand Slams video series and used it in a social campaign to give away branded merchandise in a QVC-like setting.

Then, later that year, the breakfast-friendly restaurant brand took it to the next level by creating an animated Facebook Live event where fans could interact with its pancake character in real time and get even more free swag.

TD Canada
You might recall this video from Canadian bank TD Canada, which turned one of its branch’s ATMs into an Automated Thanking Machine, dispensing remarkable and highly personalized tokens of its gratitude to a few lucky customers.

But the thank yous didn’t stop there. A year later, TD followed up with its #ThenAndNow video – a touching, emotional experience the bank cultivated to celebrate special moments in the lives of some loyal customers and their families:

Butterball
And, of course, no discussion of Thanksgiving gratefulness would be complete without a tip o’ the Capotain hat to Butterball’s toll-free Turkey Talk Line, which thanks consumers by keeping a coop full of trained turkey experts on standby to help home chefs handle all their holiday food prep and recipe needs. Last year, Butterball even expanded its Turkey Talk platform to provide on-demand assistance 24/7 via text messaging, keeping its customers feeling thankful, while keeping its brand firmly entrenched in the culinary conversation.

Why You Need to Acquire A GoPro Hero Camera
Why You Should really Invest in A GoPro Hero Digital camera
You may well also perform or market as many treasure cards from your hand as you want. Most treasure cards are really worth 2 coins every if you sell them. There are also some playing cards like scrolls and potions that have outcomes when performed, and playing cards that are well worth details at the close of the recreation. What is a Classic? And Does Classic Always Mean Keeper? Part 1 of 2
The words 'classic' and 'masterpiece' are bandied about quite a lot these days; from films to TV shows to records to novels. There are modern classics, cult classics and just plain old classic classics, seminal and universally acclaimed works that will stand the test of time. So why should video games be any different? Although video gaming is a comparatively new art form when considered alongside the written word and audio/visual entertainment media, you’d be a bit of a fool to ignore the success and influence of today's gaming industry. After all, it's now not uncommon for a top end AAA video game to outdo a Hollywood blockbuster in terms of revenue. As a result of widespread commercial success and appeal, many games are now considered staples in the libraries of both casual and hardcore gamers worldwide. These are games that we will continue to talk about, scrutinise and revisit for years to come. From a personal point of view, if a game is a 'classic', it will occupy a permanent space on my shelf and will never be subject to the routine cull of dust gatherers and 'in the disc tray once' titles which I've so foolishly bought and still buy in the wake of the inevitable pre-release hype train. For me a true 'masterpiece' is a game which grabs me so wholeheartedly that I would panic if I misplaced my copy, even though I would have no real plans to replay it anytime soon. But equally there are games which offer thoroughly excellent experiences from start to finish, which are lauded as classics but which I won't feel the need to keep in my collection from now until the day I die. So, what makes a game a 'classic' - cult, modern or otherwise? And does 'classic' always mean a game is going to be a 'keeper', a permanent feature in a gamer's library? Just to get this out in the open before we kick off: the purpose of this piece is not to determine which games are classics and which are not. Nor am I claiming to be any sort of authority on what makes a game a masterpiece. I may mention a few games by name to illustrate a point but I know that the word classic will mean very different things to very different types of player. It doesn't actually matter whether you are an avant RPG player, a lover of platformers, a fan of racing sims, mad for MMOs or a purveyor of open world chaos and exploration; but there are certain boxes a video game really should tick to be considered in the highest echelons of gaming culture. Often when playing a genuine classic you can actively feel the love and thought that has gone into every aspect of its development. This could be a meticulously mapped and resultantly slick control system, a coherent and thrilling story involving believable characters that do meaningful things in a world that feels lived in and alive. Or it could be clever level design which throws up surprises and variety at every turn, a high degree of challenge which keeps you coming back time after time, even in the face of multiple failures or even a sense of longevity and reward in exchange for the player having chosen to invest hours of their life in a single experience. A classic may possess all of these, working together in harmony to create something very special. Or just some of these. Not all video games need to rely on depth of character and story development to make them successful, for example. The overarching factor is what a developer sets out to accomplish, what their aims are and how well these aims are executed in the final product. Developers don't necessarily set out to make classics. Don't get me wrong, a developer is always aiming to make the very best game possible but it's what happens once a game has hit the shelves that can often determine whether a game gains classic status or not, for good or for bad. I've seen games that are absolutely wonderful from beginning to end, adored by the critics but unfortunately never gain any real traction with the public, shift far fewer copies than they really deserve to and are then often labelled as 'hidden gems' or 'cult favourites' but are sadly left relatively forgotten. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West stands out here, selling a mere 500,000 copies. We've also seen games that have promised lots pre-release but have fallen short when it comes to execution of core gameplay mechanics. The criticism attracted by No Man's Sky is the obvious example. In theory this could be hugely damaging to consumer confidence in a developer being able to deliver and meet expectations on a consistent basis. Thankfully in practice consumers are rarely as damning. More often than not consumers value good games over loyalty to any one developer. Thankfully. One bad release doesn't necessarily mean that it's game over, especially if the next game is a huge hit. But for the smaller developers, can there be a next game following a huge commercial flop? In the case of No Man's Sky, only time will tell for Hello Games. My feeling is that they should be afforded another chance, and to their credit have already set about things in the right way post release thanks to some hefty and very well received game enhancing updates. Despite the feelings of fan entitlement and talk of broken promises that came bubbling to the surface once discs began to spin in consoles, Hello Games did not set out to make a bad game, just as no one sits down with the intention of making a classic. And its also important to note too that for many, this is by no means a bad game at all. Not even close. The aesthetic beauty of its procedurally generated worlds alone is a marvel for some. Before being too quick to criticise, we should stand back and realise that at their core developers are teams of very talented, passionate people who make games they hope to be proud of and that they themselves would enjoy. Long may that continue. But any developer would be lying if they said they do not pay attention to what their target audience wants. It is too simplistic to say that was where Hello Games fell down, to continue with this example. Things change in the development phase and that's the way it is. The creative process is one that is constantly in flux, as it should be to allow the flexibility for new ideas to take shape and others to fall away. But at the same time being sensitive to your market is at the heart of any successful industry. As much as they are in it for the love of games, developers make games to sell copies and consumer behaviour is a huge factor in driving change which in turn keeps giving us fresh waves of new and exciting experiences that are packed with all or some of the features discussed above. For good or for bad, the consumer has perhaps the biggest say in how well received a game is and its perceived classic status or lack thereof. Commercial success is only one indicator though. The Xbox Classics or PlayStation Platinum range of days past sought to place games in the 'classic' category based on sales alone and bring them to the consumer at a fair price. Having once been a teenager living off a quite limited weekly supply of pocket money, this was always welcome. But if we look at sales alone, this does not always guarantee classic status. The Call of Duty franchise releases a new entry in the series almost every year, selling millions of copies in a blink, thanks to an engaging, well scripted single player campaign and fast paced, satisfying multiplayer modes. Hugely successful sales figures are one thing but can each successive entry in the series really be considered a classic? You might say no in the broadest sense of the word 'classic' but to the legions of loyal fans of the series, the COD games may very well be classics, in spite of recent criticism that the series is becoming a bit stale. The power of the fan community is a huge factor when talking about classic status which arguably carries as much if not more gravitas than sales do. You might say that of course if you are a fan of game or series of games, you buy the product, make your contribution and so a game's fan base is very closely linked to sales revenue. And, yes it is. But it's not quite as simple as that. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has sold somewhere approaching 20 million copies worldwide to date. From Software’s Dark Souls released in late 2011 has 'only' sold around 3 million units to date. Admittedly both are very different games but both have very passionate and dedicated fan communities, neither more or less so than the other and who would both argue their point for their game being considered a 'classic', regardless of sales. I'm glad to see that from a consumer point of view, gaming is and has always been an aesthetic experience first and foremost and not one about numbers and popularity. Gamers don't see sales figures flashing before their eyes as they shoot an enemy, slay a monster or screech around a corner and not all are driven by mass appeal. No matter what your gaming background may be, video game enthusiasts value their own experience of a game above all else, with many also proud to occupy a place in and make a contribution to their respective fan communities. And it's thanks to the relatively recent proliferation of the internet that these fan communities have really gained a firm platform upon which to exert a meaningful influence. Gamers are a species not afraid to make their opinion heard and the internet has made that even easier, for good or for bad. And it is heartening to hear that developers do listen to gamer opinion too. The developers of Nioh for example have rolled out no fewer than three demos, the first two serving as test spaces to gauge fan opinion in the now common beta format. But aside from the voicing of opinions, fan engagement with Dark Souls and Modern Warfare 4, both now relatively old games, has not receded. Although players of Modern Warfare 4 in its original release format are now dwindling, YouTube is still awash with Call of Duty multiplayer videos and skilful kills spanning the whole series. A recent reboot of the Modern Warfare is evidence alone of the fan appeal of this particular entry which will also aim to pull newcomers in too no doubt. Six years after release, Dark Souls on the other hand not only still has a very active PvP player community but is also able to boast of wikis that are as deep as the decent to Blighttown and as wide as the Gaping Dragon's toothy appendage. And across both series, content is always being uploaded and updated as new things and ways of doing things are still being uncovered. For fans of these games and many others considered classics within their respective communities, it is this wider experience that exists outwith the bounds of the game's world that is just as valuable and special as the game's world itself. You may think the phrase 'one can't exist without the other' does not apply here, as the game's world will exist regardless of how many people engage with it. But had there not been this deep engagement from fans initially, fixes and improvements may never have been made nor may there have been the appetite for subsequent entries in these series; subsequent entries which often aim to distil, refine and develop the winning formula to serve their fans and gain new ones along the way. So in saying this, it might be fair to assume that not only do classic games breed fans but fans and their feedback breed what developers hope will be further classic games. So the game’s a classic? But does even that make it worthy of becoming a permanent feature in your collection? Part 2 of 2 to come in a few days time….
