Listen to me, as someone who used to work in health insurance billing and customer service, I have seen some fucked up things. My best paid claim from insurance was over a million dollars billed. You know how much worker's compensation insurance paid? 700k. The rest of 300k+ was a write off. I don't want to think about what would have happened if my patient didn't get hurt on the job. I wish they hadn't gotten injured given what happened to them, but it is what it is sadly. If that patient would have had a copay and coinsurance, I am sure the bill would have been outrageous. That's fucked up. I don't want to think about what would happen if the ACA is walked back. Lifetime maximums? Go fuck yourself.
I also worked for a company that made custom prosthetics for children. I actively watched them hike their prices so that they could get more out of parents/renegotiate prices with insurance. The prosthetics weren't always covered by the insurance either. Texas Medicaid? You better have a generous relative because the prosthetic was not covered under any circumstance. That would leave parents with a bill of 1600 to 3400 depending on the state to get a prosthetic that their child really might need. Fucked up.
Don't get me started on supplemental insurance either. Worked there too doing customer service. I got really good at looking at the billing codes to see what was covered and what wasn't. Observation for 23 hours and 59 minutes in the ER? Too bad, you need 24 hours to get paid out. And cancers and heart attacks, oh my god. Carcinoma in SITU? Welp, it's not classified as malignant yet, so no cancer payout for you. Minor heart attack? It has to be a major heart attack for that to be covered. Someone died in a car wreck with a BAC over like 0.08? Sorry, you're not getting that life insurance payout. It's fucked up. Soul sucking work.
I get why someone would have done something about it. (Luigi is still innocent until proven guilty, so I am not blaming him at this time.) For profit healthcare is a scam. It's not just the insurances, it's the for profit healthcare systems too, including hospital systems, pharmaceutical companies owned by the insraunces, and the medical equipment supply companies. It's the for profit hospitals who bill an elastic bandage at 35 dollars (!!! Just looked this up on my local for profit hospital system's chargemaster, jesus christ!) so they can get the tiniest bit of a higher payout than what it is worth from people who lack insurance. It's the drug companies owned by the insurances who hike up prices. It's the durable medical equipment companies who think they can get away with charging outrageous prices for any sort of assistance device. It's not the independent doctors who are trying to run an office (usually). It's not the nurses who are just trying to do the best they can while being underpaid and overworked so that the for profit system can do it's job for the shareholders. And it certainly is not the poor customer service agent you are screaming at over the phone. Policies are policies, which means that the customer service agent's hands are basically tied. All the red tape. It's insane. It's the bloated for profit healthcare system that is to blame for our problems.
Elizabeth Warren and other Senators have currently proposed a bill that would break up healthcare conglomerates and force them to sell off their stakes in pharmaceuticals. This would possibly be a game changer. Health insurances would have to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies to get the best prices on drugs. Because we know they don't want to pay. It wouldn't benefit them to recommend a higher cost drug anymore. That money wouldn't be going in their pockets. I highly suggest you look at the information behind the bill as it develops. I have also read there is a similar bill that was just proposed by the House too.
Please, contact your representatives. Tell them about the Senate's Patients Before Monopolies Act. Get impassioned and tell them what it would do for you. You voted for them, tell them what you want. These are your representatives. And if they don't care, try your hardest to fire them next go around. Healthcare is of the utmost importance to the people. It's literally a life or death situation at times. More people should care because it affects everyone. The time is now, it's time to push for a better future.
P.S. Please don't yell at the customer service workers. It's not their fault. It's a shitty job with shitty moments. I've cried with people because something wasn't covered before. The for profit healthcare industry is fucked up.
#*sigh*#i really hate the for profit healthcare industry#it's fucked up#healthcare#health insurance#patients before monopolies act#patients before monopolies#shimmer rambles

The Flatiron Room, New York – reimagining the traditional whiskey experience for today
let’s begin
Lauded as one of the best bars in New York, and even the world, the The Flatiron Room has an envious Whiskey list, fabulous menu and an incredible atmosphere with live music and great servers.
the story
The Flatiron Room was first opened in 2012 and has become one of the most renowned bars in New York.
Their founder, Tommy Tardie, envisioned the Flatiron Room as a dining experience with a difference. Tardie has a history of working in the hospitality industry, an experience he has found rewarding, and wanted to run a bar that also brought in his other love; Whiskey.
He has said of the Flatiron Room, “I think some places use the moniker “whiskey bar” to mean a rough and tumble atmosphere. We didn’t want to call ourselves a whiskey bar, per se, rather a “fine spirits parlour.”
“We didn’t want to alienate ourselves to people who think they don’t like whiskey.”
And nothing could be more true; as you sit at your table perusing the menu and casually people watching, you notice that not everyone is there for the whiskey, and that’s ok, more than ok, they are catered for with other drinks or introduction flights of whiskey for them to try and, who knows, it may even draw them in to the category.
the Atmosphere
The phrase “fine spirits parlour” is very important here. It captures exactly what The Flatiron Room is. It isn’t your typical bar where you go to enjoy a dram every now and then.
Tardie has not just created a restaurant and bar, but an experience. The Flatiron Room was created so people could indulge in some of the best whiskey and the best food with an amazing ambiance and live music. It is a luxurious venue, with a highly personalised feel and lots of small details that make a big difference.
For instance, you can buy a bottle and enjoy it through the night, and then return it to the Bottle Keep service, for whenever you come back. It’s a great way to get customers to return, but also to feel a bit special when they get there – especially when you bring friends or colleagues and you already have your very own bottle of bourbon waiting for you. Nice touch.
The decor is elegant and has a speakeasy feel to it, but with more substance and heart. It is the perfect place to drink Whiskey and enjoy good music, and although there are many tables, you feel like you’re enjoying a private dining experience with some soulful music all to yourselves.
Tardie wanted to create a destination with a throwback to aristocratic wealth, to capture that spirit and that feeling you would have gotten back in the day when the door closes behind you once you have entered the restaurant and just enjoy what’s in front of and around you without dwelling on time, location, or any other external factors.
The Whiskey List
Famed chef Anthony Bourdain once said of the Flatiron Room that it “has a really good whiskey list. It’s really well-curated. I’m very aware of their list”, when asked about the best places to drink in NYC.
It would be safe to say, that with a Whiskey list that includes over 1000 bottles, The Flatiron Room is probably one of the best places to enjoy a Whiskey in the world.
Guests are presented with the Whiskey Bible upon arrival, and you’ll find every kind of dram available. And they don’t stop at just Whiskies either. Their cocktail menu is something well worth pouring over (and having poured for you). You will find a new favourite that you’ll be ordering at every other bar once you experience it here, that’s for sure… the experimental nature of their work is superb too, weaving flavours together from different drinks categories, such as whiskey and sherry, to work in perfect harmony.
One of the key things that draws people to The Flatiron Room is the knowledge that the staff have of Whiskey. They know everything there is to know about the stuff, from every part of the world and every category that has ever existed. I was incredibly impressed by their genuine passion – a passion that cannot be taught, but that they must spend a long time hiring for. And they are so keen to share that knowledge. Ask them anything and they have the answer, or better still, ask for a recommendation, and they will know exactly what you want.
When we visited, it was clear that the staff were very well trained to serve whiskey however the customer wants to drink it, no judgements, no questions, only a bit of guidance here and there on if one should have water with certain whiskeys to open up the flavour to make it even better.
The whole idea behind the Flatiron Room is for people to enjoy their drinks. That’s why there is a breadth of whiskeys from around the world available – from local New York brands and products to Japanese and new world whiskies too, and that’s why the staff know their stuff.
In terms of New York, this place stands out as being one of the rare locations that you want to get dressed up to visit, knowing full well you will be having one of the best meals in the State, whilst also being given the rare opportunity to enjoy life as it should be; offline, with the atmosphere of the people, place and music bringing the whole experience together.

Diary entry 2
Tuesday 26th March 2019
Before I start I just want to make sure that everyone is on the same page and has the same understanding about my job and my industry.
I do not need to be saved, I have chosen to work in this industry and in this job. The only hardship I experience from this job is from outsiders judging.
My job does not define me as a person, it does not make me anything other than a young girl who is confident, extroverted and ambitious. I have worked in retail, sales and hospitality and I still do social media management work and sales every now and then.
I do not come from a broken home and I do not have ‘daddy issues’. These stereotypes are so untrue to my industry and ESPECIALLY the club that I work in.
The men that enter my workplace are not all ‘creeps’ and ‘disgusting’, in fact I have met some of the most incredible people through my work place and I have learnt so much from these people too. I enjoy most of my customers company, they are paying for a service, therefore they are respectful of the women they are paying. I have met elite athletes, actors, singers and CEO’s through work. People make the assumption that dirty hobos come into my workplace- but would this kind of person be able to afford $50 for a 10 minute dance? Or $400 for 1 hour of my time? No, hence why my customers are not disgusting and I do not hate dancing for them or talking to them.
LEARNING TO DANCE/ BEING CONFIDENT ON STAGE
When I first got a job as a dancer I was so nervous but I have always been very confident in bathers/ underwear so that part was okay for me. Tbh if you’re not comfortable in your own skin then you shouldn’t even think about this job. I’ve always been an attention whore and I love being on stage and the centre of attention so that helped too. I did dancing when I was in school but I’d never done pole. I had a 2 hour private pole dancing class at pole princess in the city, I learnt about grip, a few basic spins and how to climb the pole. It was really hard and frustrating but I was happy that I at least knew the basics.
My first night I was sooo nervous and I wore the tackiest outfit lol I also hadn’t bought proper pole shoes so I was wearing a pair of cheap lipstick heels all night.
They gave us a few free glasses of champagne which helped me to Loosen up, when it was my turn I felt a lot better and I actually killed it. The girls said I was a little fast but that is super common for baby strippers. After that I felt fine and couldn’t wait to go on again!
It’s super important to watch what the other girls do on stage and to listen to the music. One of the older girls told me that i had a good body so I didn’t need to move too much, I could be more sensual and it didn’t matter about pole tricks. I think my biggest advice is that audience intersection is your best friend!!! I am all about face and looking into customers eyes- this works so well to build a connection with them without even speaking to them.
It definitely takes time and I highly recommend watching YouTube videos on how to pole dance just so you know the basics. Also when it’s quiet that’s the best time to practice
2. HOW IT WORKS
every club is different and has different rules, I am so lucky to work at the best club in Melbourne and possibly even Australia- The Men’s Gallery. We are hired as subcontractors and we pay a house fee to work. On weeknights we pay $80 and on weekends we pay $120. Each club charges different amounts though. At men’s we are a non touching club, which means that men are not allowed to touch us at all (with little exceptions like arms or legs), however there are more and more clubs now that are allowing touching in dances. No, we do not offer ‘extras’ and if there are girls doing this in the club they will be fired on the spot.
We make our money from dances and VIP bookings, dances are 3 minutes for $20, 10 minutes for $50, half an hour shower room for $250 and one hour for $400. We’ve just introduced new VIP rooms so we now have a karaoke room and a shower room which is so fun.
The club doesn’t take a cut from what we make but some clubs do.
3. HIRING PROCESS
Again- every club is different but I have worked at four different clubs so I do have an understanding of the main processes of each club. I am 99% sure that no club will ever make you ‘audition’ on stage. However I have heard rumours of spearmint doing this. Most clubs will just run through a few basic questions like whether you’ve danced before and whether you understand the rules, have pole experience etc. it’s pretty chill. They’ll then ask you to take your clothes off and they’ll take a photo of you in your underwear and that’s pretty much it. At men’s they’ll either hire you on the spot or leave you hanging or give you a trial shift. It is really competitive these days and there are always new girls in and out. They can also fire you with 0 notice for whatever reason they want. If management doesn’t like you then they’ll just stop letting you roster on, this ha the same at every club.
4. THE GIRLS
A lot of people always ask me if it’s really catty/ competitive at men’s and I just want to say that all through school I always struggled to get along well with girls and I hated going to an all girls school. But working at men’s I’ve never had so many female friends and I’ve never felt so welcome and warm in a community of women. It is really like a family. However, it did take me at least a year to feel fully comfortable and confident in the change rooms as it can be very intimidating and loud. As a new dancer you can’t just waltz into the changerooms and expect everyone to be your friend because to be honest we don’t really like any new girls at first. You’re fresh meat and you don’t fully understand how everything works. So it’s a really good idea to lay low until you’re welcomed fully. Try to avoid making friends early as well because you want to focus on hustling and making money and the moment you have friends you get lazy!! Also friends always equal drama, that’s unavoidable and you don’t need that at your work place. Be friendly with everyone but avoid getting too close too soon.
5. TIPS
SAVE YOUR FUCKING MONEY. SAVE IT. JUST DO IT. the money you make when you’re a baby stripper will be the easiest money you’ll ever make so fucking make a savings account and put at least $1000 in a week. That’s easy to do. I only started doing this after a year and I regretted it. I know this is like really shocking but you actually don’t need to go to Nobu 3 times a week or buy expensive cocktails every time you go out. Live like you still make $20 an hour at maccas.
GET AN ACCOUNTANT. I’ll never forget when my mate turned around to me and goes ‘what are taxes??’ This bitch had been working in the industry for over a year. If you’re depositing your cash into the bank every week the ATO is gonna come for you. Get a dodgy ass stripper accountant and pay ur taxes. Also get an ABN.
Some strippers live week by week which I don’t get, the golden rule to saving and making money is to make more money than you spend. So if you’re living like a fukn queen and you have $0 in your bank by the end of the week you need to either roster on for another shift or you need to calm the fuk down on the bags and dinners.
DONT PAY FOR YOUR PARTNER. I learnt this the hard way, I didn’t realise I was spending so much on my ex until I was fully over him. Dinners, presents, tickets, drinks, holidays. Everything. If he guilt trips you into spending your money on him because he doesn’t like what you do then DUMP HIM. your partner should love you for you and understand that your job doesn’t define you as a person. WORK IS WORK. Stop guilt spending, save your cash because you may not even be with this person forever like you think you will be, and I promise you’ll feel like an idiot in the end.
LOVE YOURSELF, TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF. breaks and holidays are a necessity to avoid stripper burnout. Yes that is a thing and yes it will kill you. This job is tough both mentally and physically and it will affect you in the long run. You need to be proactive in taking care of your body and your mind. No that doesn’t mean drinking alcohol or taking drugs to forget, that means going away for a weekend, doing yoga, having a night in, spending time with family.

Hired Part Three - Conflict of Interest
@erikalyafter requested the following prompt: Trained as a sexual weapon Steve hunts the world’s best detective
Chapters (1) (2) (3)
In Steve’s line of work, referrals were the key to finding clients. One couldn’t very well put out a flyer advertising mercenary-type services wherein sex (or at least the promise of sex) might be used to extort information or carry out an assassination. More importantly, however, referrals gave him a minor measure of security, in that there was a six-degrees-of-separation element to the identity of his customers. He had begun his career by working for people he knew and trusted, and they in turn recommended him to others. And because the initial sources of the recommendations were reliable, he could feel more or less at ease in taking on new jobs.
It was for that reason, along with a general bad feeling in his gut, that he was currently preoccupied with mapping out an exit strategy rather than engaging in formal pleasantries with the group of well-dressed men seated around the table.
“I’m sorry – but how did you hear of me again?” Steve asked.
The group’s apparent leader, a tall, fit man in his fifties who identified himself as Ian Markova, waved away the question. “I should think that would hardly matter, considering what we’re offering you.”
Steve begrudgingly agreed. Under most circumstances, he wouldn’t have consented to a meeting with guys like these – mafia types, by the look of it – but he could easily retire on the compensation they were proposing.
“Fair enough. What’s the job?”
Markova nodded to the younger man sitting on his right. Steve was handed a manila folder, which he opened to discover the photo and dossier of an Interpol agent.
“Daniel Williams,” Markova introduced. “Graduated with a major in Criminal Justice at Seton Hall, top of his class at the police academy, and generally acknowledged as a rising star in the law enforcement community. Over the years, he’s worked for a variety of government agencies as a top notch investigator. Two years ago, he was recruited by Interpol, where – presumably – he is still currently employed.”
“Presumably?”
“The nature of his job requires him to be constantly on the move and on guard. Much of his personal history has been expunged in order to protect anyone who might be affected by his work, and very few can confirm his current status.” Markova fixed Steve with a haughty grin, and his dark eyes shone with malicious humor. “I, of course, am one of those few.
Steve frowned and closed the file. “And what exactly would you like me to do?”
Markova folded his hands on the table. “From what little information we’ve been able to gather, Agent Williams’s propensity for switching jobs so often may have also been due to prejudice, aside from his obvious talent for solving difficult crimes. He has been openly bisexual since his college days. And you,” he gave Steve an admiring once-over, “have both the looks and the skills necessary to get close to him.”
“And you know all this – how?”
“Never you mind. The situation is this: Agent Williams has been, shall we say, interfering in my business affairs. I could have him eliminated, naturally, but I think he could prove very useful, given the right incentive. What I would like from you, is to find me some leverage. Seduce him into giving up something I can use to secure his cooperation. Complete this small task for me, and I will pay you the sum we spoke of - half up front, and the rest after you deliver.
Markova extended his hand. “Do we have a deal, Mister McGarrett?”
“McGarrett. McGarrett!”
“Hmm, what?”
Daniel Williams – Danny, as he preferred to be called – shook his head in exasperation. “I said – what do you want in your coffee?”
“Oh.” Steve glanced at the self-serving refreshment station in the hotel lobby, wondering if they had any organic butter on hand. He doubted it. “Surprise me.”
“Black it is, then.” Danny handed Steve a plain coffee in a disposable cup and sat down on the opposite end of the couch, facing him. He turned his attention to the papers he’d left laying between them, all of them written in various eastern European languages.
“So, what are we up to today?” Steve asked.
Danny shot him a half-hearted glare, and Steve fought a grin.
Over the past several weeks, Steve had arranged enough chance encounters with Williams, subtly experimenting with different personas and hitting on him, that Danny eventually gave up trying to ignore him and instead began to invite him along whenever he went out to run errands or complete other daily activities associated with life. But every so often, Danny would disappear for several days, or he’d receive a call during one of their “dates” and would instruct Steve to drive his rented Camaro to some out-of-the-way location for a covert meeting. Steve would then be forced to wait in the car while Danny spoke with someone on a disposable cell phone (a new one every time) or talk to a thin figure who consistently kept his or her back to Steve at all times.
While Danny’s clandestine operations, not to mention Markova’s frequent and increasingly impatient demands for a status update, kept him on edge, Steve had to admit that he was actually enjoying himself for the first time since – he couldn’t even remember.
Danny had this strange way about him that made him equally infuriating and endearing. He had strong opinions about everything under the sun, from what was an acceptable topping on pizza to music to the ocean, and he had no qualms about sharing them in a remarkable and highly entertaining fashion. He had a sharp tongue and an even sharper mind, quick with a joke, but just as quick with his fists (a fact Steve discovered when he’d pushed Danny too far and was rewarded with a right cross to the jaw).
But more than that, Danny was kind and compassionate. Steve witnessed it first hand when he “accidently” stumbled upon the agent in the aftermath of a raid. He had been in the crowd gathered around a police barricade, watching in horror as Williams and the local police breached an abandoned building, only to exit moments later with malnourished, dirty and obviously abused children (victims of human trafficking) in tow. He’d watched as Danny brushed the frightened tears off a little boy’s cheek, and draped his jacket around the shoulders of a nearly-naked girl.
And once the smoke had cleared and all of the kids had been taken to several area hospitals, he had tailed Williams to a gym and watched him wail on a punching bag until his knuckles bled.
“Well, for starters,” Danny answered, setting aside his files, “Maybe you’d finally like to tell me something about yourself, something other than just your name and a bullshit backstory.”
Steve put a hand to his chest. “You wound me, Danny. I’ve told you TONS of stuff about me. Why do you keep calling it bullshit?”
Though they’d achieved something resembling a real friendship, neither of them had been forthcoming with anything significant. Steve continued to repeat the cover story he’d designed to attract Danny, who in turn talked and ranted in circles while never actually revealing anything beyond superficial details.
“Because it is,” Danny said. He made himself comfortable against the cushions and laid his arm across the back of the couch. “I’ve learned a lot about you over the last few weeks, and none of it meshes with the crap you’ve been spouting.” Strangely, he almost sounded hurt.
“Yeah? Let me guess – you’re one of those cops who run background checks on all of his dates, am I right? Pray, enlighten me, officer. Did you find something to contradict everything I’ve told you so far?” Naturally, Steve assumed that Agent Williams would do his homework, but he had plenty of useful connections, including a hacker capable of revising Steve’s history to match whatever narrative he required.
Danny shook his head. “Okay; first of all – no. I did not run a background check on you, though in my line of work, that’s well within my right. And second, I am a detective – agent – whatever, and a damn good one. It’s my job to read between the lines and sort out the truth.”
“Okay, detective. You think you’re so smart?” Steve scooted closer and stared him down, his lips curved in a challenging smirk. “What have you learned about me?”
“Well, let’s see.” Danny placed the tips of his fingers to his temples, mimicking a psychic about to perform a reading. He took an over-exaggerated breath. “You either grew up in, or spent a significant amount of time in Hawaii.”
Steve’s smirk faltered.
“Swimming is your preferred method for staying in shape.”
Steve willed himself not to fidget.
“You have a dog, even though you’re more of a cat person.”
The smirk vanished altogether. “How…?”
“You’re ex-military, probably U.S. Navy; your father is no longer alive, and you have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which I’m guessing you haven’t sought any sort of help in addressing.” Danny lowered his hands. “How am I doing so far?”
To say that Steve was dumbfounded would be an understatement, so much so that he didn’t bother to contradict anything. “I – how could you possibly know all that?”
Danny sighed and met his glare. “I also know that you’re incredibly thoughtful and gentle. Those who are lucky enough to call you ‘friend’ would describe you as deeply caring and loyal to a fault. And, in spite of this playboy act, you’re a hopeless romantic who desperately wants a family of his own – one that will never forsake him.”
Steve crossed his arms and scowled. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Danny inclined his head slightly and lifted a shoulder. “You can deny it all you want, but we both know I’m right.”
“You keep accusing me of being dishonest and cagey, but you haven’t exactly been forthcoming yourself.”
“Fair enough.” Danny studied him in silence for a moment. Then he nodded to himself, as though he’d made some sort of decision.
He leaned to one side and reached into his pants pocket, pulling out a glossy piece of paper folded into a square. He offered it to Steve.
“What’s this?” Steve straightened the paper.
It was a photograph of two children, a teenage girl with long, brown hair, and a young, blond-haired boy with a wide-toothy grin.
“My kids,” Danny said. “Grace and Charlie. They’re the only good thing to have come out of my failed marriage.”
“They’re beautiful,” Steve answered sincerely. He returned the picture.
Danny gazed at it, a sad smile on his place. “My ex got custody of them in the divorce. Then she got remarried to this real estate developer who’s been constantly moving them around the United States. The only way I could keep up was to study and work my ass off to become a good investigator so that I could qualify for a job with the FBI, and later Interpol, which gave me the freedom to relocate with them.”
He carefully placed the photo back in his pocket. “What sucks is that my current case poses a significant risk. I can only video chat with them over secured lines at random intervals. I haven’t gotten to hold them in over six months. And even before this whole debacle, my ex-wife has been fighting tooth and nail to bar me from visitation. She thinks that if she distances them from me, it’ll hurt them less in the long run if I get killed in the line of duty.”
“That’s – I don’t even know what to say. Sorry, I guess.”
Danny smiled a little in thanks. “That’s why this will be my last case. Once I wrap this up, I’m going to quit and find some place stable where I can put down roots. I’ll retire from law enforcement; maybe open a restaurant or something. And once I’m settled, I’m going to sue for shared custody.”
Steve could hardly believe what he was hearing. On the one hand, he’d just been handed the exact type of leverage he’d been paid to uncover. Clearly, Danny would do absolutely anything for his children; probably even cooperate with some less-than-savory characters to keep them safe. All Steve had to do was excuse himself, call Markova, tell him about Grace and Charlie, and he could sail off into the sunset with a full bank account.
On the other hand, Steve wasn’t the type of guy to put kids in danger under any circumstance. More importantly, how could Steve betray Danny after such a massive display of trust? If he was being perfectly honest with himself, he had grown to like Danny very much. In spite of the lies, they had real chemistry, if not enough for a relationship, then at least they might form a good friendship.
Then again, that point was moot. One way or another, Danny would learn the truth about Steve. And when he did…
One of Danny’s phones rang, disturbing Steve’s introspection and Danny’s quiet observation.
“Yes? Okay. I’m on my way.” Danny hung up and gathered his files. “I need to go. Duty calls.”
Steve stood up. “And I suppose I’m not allowed to come along?”
“Sorry babe.” Danny got to his feet and took a few steps closer to Steve. “You busy on Friday?”
He mulled it over. “I’m not sure yet. I have some – uh – stuff to take care of.”
“Okay. Well, I’ll check in with you later.” Danny hesitated. Then he leaned up and gave Steve a peck on the lips.
Steve blinked. “What was that for?”
Danny grinned. “Meh. Just felt like it.” He left without another world.
Steve raised a hand to touch his lips. It was a hardly a real kiss, certainly nothing to blush about, and yet Steve could feel his neck growing warm.
Oh god; he was so screwed.

YOU’RE THE ASSHOLE WHO’S BEEN USING MY WIFI. bechloe pls
“Musetta’s Waltz” poured out of Beca’s cell phone, which was sitting beside her on the desk. She had her arms on the desk, and her head on her arms. She was working very hard to keep her breathing calm and deep, as the song started to fade.
“I swear to God,” she muttered, “if I have to listen to one more muzak rendition of ‘Calcutta’ by Lawrence Welk…”
Thankfully, the world was spared her empty and bitter threat as some helpless representative picked up the call.
“Hello, thank you for waiting, how can I help you today?”
Beca sat up a bit and tried for one more deep breath. “I’m very sorry, I know it’s not your fault, but I am very frustrated and that might become super obvious real fast.”
The customer service rep audibly swallowed. “I’m sorry to hear that, but thank you for your warning. My name’s Denise, how can I help you?”
“Denise, my name is Beca, with one ‘C,’ Mitchell, with two ‘L’s, customer ID number 503871-987. This will be my fifth call to your company in as many days. I have received no less than six warnings of possible copyright infringement on my wireless Internet.” Beca paused, feeling herself get worked up all over again.
“I understand, Ms. Mitchell, I have information here about the possible infringements, but I highly recommend uninstalling BitTorrent if that’s the program you use, and this should all clear itself up,” Denise said, clearly trying to moderate the level between helpful, stern, and understanding.
“No! You don’t understand! I produce music, okay, so I buy all of my music. I’ve never installed BitTorrent or whatever else people use these days for that stuff, and I’d never even heard of Goldman’s Cecil Medicine and I thought Gray’s Anatomy was in reference to a show I’ve never watched, but if I wanted to, I could, legally, because I have Netflix!”
Beca’s blood pressure was built all the way up. “Look, okay, the point is that this isn’t me and I’m the only one who lives here and uses my Wi-Fi, so there must be a mix-up on your end, because I’m not going to jail for infringement, and especially not for books I’ve never even heard of.”
“I understand you feel frustrated, Ms. Mitchell, but as I see from the notes on your previous calls to customer service, we’ve had numerous techs look into this discrepancy. They all assure us that it is definitely coming from your Wi-Fi and IP address, and if you’re the only one with access, then we’re afraid it must be you.” Denise’s voice had become only minutely less accommodating.
“But it’s not me! I’m not a doctor, I don’t care about medicine or anatomy!”
“We apologize for the inconvenience, Ms. Mitchell, but there’s nothing we can do on our end.”
Beca groaned. “Okay, I want to speak to a manager. Anybody who can do something to help me.”
Denise seemed to know that this was coming. “Of course, I’ll connect you to Jesse, he’s the current manager on duty.”
“Thank you,” Beca managed to say relatively calmly. Then her eyes widened. “Wait, no, please don’t-”
“Please hold!” Denise called cheerfully.
“-put me on hold,” Beca sighed. She glanced down at her phone’s call timer. 2:37:16. “Lord kill me now.”
Three days later
Beca leaves her apartment hurriedly, fumbling with her keys in the hallway to lock her door, when she notices her next-door neighbour leaving as well. She’s got red hair, a nice double-breasted trench-coat-type jacket that accentuates the lines of her body, and a shoulder bag that seems to be bursting at the seams.
The neighbour is just locking up as Beca starts down the hall to the elevator, pushing the button three times in slight agitation since she’s like, definitely going to be late.
“Hi!” A cheery voice calls out, accompanied with footsteps behind her.
“Hi.” Beca says flatly.
“Nice to meet you, 8D,” the stranger continues.
“Sure, you too, 8F,” Beca replies, wishing the elevator would hurry up.
“I’m Chloe,” she laughs, “and you are?”
“Very late,” Beca says gruffly, but regrets it when she can feel the excitement deflate from her companion. “Sorry. I’m Beca.”
Chloe perks right back up. “Nice to meet you!”
Luckily, the elevator arrives, and they shuffle inside. Beca finally spends more than a cursory second looking over her neighbour. Peeking out from underneath the woman’s coat is a laminated card.
“What’s that?” Beca asks, gesturing at it.
“Oh!” Chloe exclaims, “that’s my ID card for the hospital.”
Beca raises an eyebrow. “You’re a doctor?”
Chloe nods enthusiastically. “Yeah, well, I mean, I’m in residency right now, just finishing up med school, but technically I am, yes.”
Beca’s blood runs cold and she presses the emergency stop button.
Her voice is low and, honestly, a little menacing. “I don’t suppose one of your textbooks is Goldman’s Cecil Medicine?”
Chloe visually swallows hard.
“Oh…”
“God, do you know how long I spent on the phone with the fucking internet company trying to get them to fix whatever glitch in their system was so insistent on me being at all into medicine?!”
“I’m sorry,” Chloe murmurs weakly, a little too breathy.
Beca barely keeps herself from growling. “Did you hack into it? How did you do it? Can you stop?”
“I didn’t hack it, no,” Chloe squeaks out.
“YOU’RE THE ASSHOLE WHO’S BEEN USING MY WI-FI, YOU COULD AT LEAST TELL ME HOW,” Beca yells, then winces. “Sorry. Wait, no, why am I apologizing. God.”
“I used the password!” Chloe admits.
Beca furrows her brow. “How do you know the password?”
Chloe shrugs. “I mean it wasn’t all that difficult. You named it using lyrics from the song, so it wasn’t hard to guess your password was ‘Titanium.’ You should probably change that, by the way.”
“No one but you has been stealing it!” Beca huffs. Then blinks. “You know David Guetta?”
Chloe laughs, and presses the stop button again to get the elevator moving. “What, have I been living under a rock? That song is my jam.” She pauses, like she’s evaluating the situation. The elevator dings. “My lady jam,” Chloe specifies, and then with a little wave calls, “Toodles!” as she leaves.
Beca just stands there, dumbstruck, looking after her.
Her phone vibrates in her pocket. When she pulls it out, she glances at the time. “Fuck.” She sighs, composing herself. “Hello, this is Beca Mitchell… Yes, I know I’m late. I’m on my way.”
When she gets back home that evening she changes her Wi-Fi name and password, wanting to see if Chloe listens to La Roux, too.

Strands- ch 1
Finally finally finally I’m getting started on my hairdresser AU. This is specially for @fangirlhani who I definitely owed a gift fic to with all her beautiful promo stuff she’s been making. And thanks to @artbylexie who helped me finalize this first chapter, and kudos to her for coming up with the brilliant salon name hehe. Planning to keep these chapters relatively short and post them on here as well as AO3. Hope you guys enjoy! 😉
For those who put a high premium on their personal hair style, Strands on the Strand could be the only possible destination in all of London. It was here that those who were able to could come not only to solve issues with their coiffure, but often with nearly almost anything else that might be troubling them. The owner, Martha Hudson, knew full well that despite the excellent services offered by professionals such as Mary Morstan and managed nearly to the perfection of a machine by John Watson, the real draw of Strands rested on the shoulders of the consulting stylist himself: Sherlock Holmes.
Renown throughout the city as highly in demand, the salon was often a bustling place, clients in a constant and steady stream, despite the acerbic commentary often coming from the last chair. The bustle had yet to begin on this particular morning though, as the salon was still an hour or so from opening. However, the last chair was in use by the consulting stylist and a soon-to-be bride who happened to be his second favorite client, as well as a skilled coworker.
He dipped the brush back in the bowl and applied the color to another section of Mary’s regrowth, determined that everything should be perfect for her and John’s big day in less than a week. Including, of course, her hair.
“Gosh, I’ve been so worked up about the planning lately that I’ve actually been making myself sick!” Mary commented with a heavy sigh.
“Mm,” Sherlock hummed in thought as he gently felt another section of her hair between his fingers. Something crossed his mind for a split second, but he didn’t quite have a chance to voice it aloud.
John walked over to where Sherlock and Mary were working. “Sherlock, Molly Hooper called again. She’s still wondering if you’ve had a cancellation that she could take this week.”
“Nothing,” Sherlock shot back instantly. “I’m booked solid, no open appointments.”
John frowned at him. “You’re not booked solid though, I’ve just checked the schedule and-”
“She doesn’t need to come in, John,” Sherlock bit back, his jaw setting in a hard line as he all but glared at his work.
He tried to ignore the pointed glance the John and Mary shared.
“Sherlock, you know that Molly’s one our best clients,” John went on. “She was one of your first clients, actually, there’s no reason to be such a git to her now.”
Sherlock rolled his eyes. “She was here four weeks ago. She’s far from needing a trim and the glaze I did shouldn’t need to be redone for at least another couple of weeks. She’s clearly just thinking about the wedding and wanting to try something new and exciting, probably something which she found online on some inane website, all of which is completely unnecessary. And besides, how is anyone supposed to notice her actual hair when she always insists on adding some sort of oversized ornament to it?!”
John let out a short laugh. “Ever heard the expression, ‘the customer is always right?’” As manager, that was naturally how his mind worked. “If Molly wants to go for something different, it’s her right to do so.”
“Well, she can go and do it with someone else, then!” Sherlock snapped.
Mary’s eyebrows shot up as she glanced between her friend and her fiance. “Is this still about hair, Sherlock?”
Sherlock cleared his throat and schooled his features into a cool mask.
Mary’s eyes narrowed slightly as she studied her friend. Perhaps best not to push too much at the moment. “Well anyway, I agree with you,” she added. “I think Molly is naturally gorgeous. She hardly needs to do anything to make people see that! You should really tell her that.”
Sherlock grimaced. “Why would I tell her that?”
“Because that’s what you think.”
“I said no such thing!”
Mary shrugged. “I can read between the lines...and I can also tell when you’re fibbing.”
“The future Mrs. Watson, ladies and gentlemen,” John stated as he leaned down to plant a kiss on her cheek before walking back over to the desk.
“Sherlock, how long have you known Molly, really?” Mary asked after John had walked away.
“Long before you were hired. About six years ago was the first time she came in, I believe.”
Mary whistled. “That’s a loyal client!”
“Convenient location for her,” Sherlock explained matter-of-factly. “Bart’s Hospital is only five minutes from here.”
“For a lot of people I don’t think location would be enough to put up with all that goes along with being your client.”
“Meaning?” he questioned with narrowed eyes.
“Oh come on, Sherlock!” Mary laughed. “You’ve nearly made her cry more than once! She’s awfully forgiving, if you ask me.”
Now that, Sherlock couldn’t really argue with. While he was the best hairstylist in London and hadn’t built that reputation based on being nice, he knew that he’d been particularly unfeeling to that sweet woman on a number of occasions. And Mary was right. She was incredibly forgiving. Even though he’d made a bit of a pact to be far more gentle with her after a particularly disastrous Christmas, he often wondered what made her continue putting up with him so faithfully.
“Though I suppose everyone has to have a bit of thick skin to deal with sitting in this chair,” Mary added with a wink. “You can’t have Sherlock Holmes do your hair unless you’re willing to hear all about why you need it done because of what’s going on with the rest of your life.”
“I solve problems that go beyond hair,” Sherlock said, putting his own spin on things. “Nobody should complain seeing as I may as well be offering them a free additional service. Everyone says that seeing your hairdresser is like therapy...I just happen to be far better at it than anyone else. And I’d say my tips speak for themself!”
“And you’re humble,” Mary said with a little wag of her head. “Talk to her, Sherlock. Because obviously, there’s more-”
“There, all done,” Sherlock announced, interrupting Mary’s speech, setting the brush back in the bowl, and snapping his gloves off. He checked his watch to plan when she should be washed.
He almost strolled away, but then stopped mid step to swivel back around.
“Oh and incidentally, Mary, based on your recently being sick, supposedly from stress, and the obvious changes to the texture of your hair...I’d highly recommend doing a pregnancy test.”
A mug of tea clattered to the floor over by the reception desk.

The COVID_19 Cleaning Road to Recovery!

Well done, Australia – we’ve ‘flattened the curve’ and numbers of new COVID_19 cases remain optimistically low. We still have some way to go in the coming weeks and months and must remain vigilant with our personal hygiene and social distancing, but we’re now enjoying the easing of restrictions around the country!
Some industries (like cafes and restaurants) have already begun returning to work and, according to the Government’s Roadmap to Recovery, most businesses will return by July. Despite the good economic news; we have to remember that contracting the highly contagious coronavirus remains a very real health threat and physical distancing and hygiene requirements will continue to be a part of our lives for some time yet – particularly in larger, publicly accessed and shared spaces.
Now is the time to get ready; with about a month to review and update your design and layout and/or processes and procedures, there’s lots to be done in order to become a COVIDSafe workplace!
You can find lots of free information from Work Safe Australia and the World Health Organisation (WHO) about returning to work and preventing the spread of coronavirus and managing any outbreaks. At Cloverdale, we’re regularly reviewing the expert advice and briefing our team to ensure we’ve got all the latest information, processes and tools to help keep our clients and their premises safe and healthy!
COVID-Cleaning – Preventative vs Reactive
When it comes to COVID-cleaning your business, there are two options – Preventative or Reactive. Preventative cleaning is usually performed before returning to the workplace and is designed to significantly mitigate the risk of spreading Coronavirus. It provides your staff, clients and customers with peace of mind, and a sense of safety and security in coming back. Regularity is the key and preventative cleaning should continue and be done fairly regularly over the coming months, to ensure you can maintain the highest possible cleanliness and hygiene standards.
In contrast, Reactive cleaning is often performed after a confirmed case or outbreak of a virus like influenza or coronavirus. This type of clean requires a full combination of cleaning, disinfecting/ sanitising, deep cleaning and bio-cleaning services and is usually completed outside of trading hours or when the business is closed!
Remember touchpoint cleaning and hand hygiene (hand washing and sanitising) should be central to your overall workplace health and safety strategy, with additional out of hours cleaning services employed to support and mitigate risk.
What Type of Clean do I need?
There are three types of cleaning services to choose from – they can be completed as stand-alone or packaged together, depending on your company size and needs:
1. Regular Cleaning – day-to-day touchpoint cleaning will remove dirt and grime and includes wiping down of high touch surfaces with our Hospital Grade disinfectant to kill germs and bacteria. We can also supply hand sanitiser, soap, paper towels and toilet rolls! In these COVID_19 times we recommend temporarily increasing the frequency of cleaning.
2. Deep Cleaning – a more thorough less frequent cleaning service, including the scrubbing of hard surfaces like bathroom floors to remove built-up dirt and grime, and wiping down of ALL surfaces that get regularly used or touched with disinfectant (this should be performed routinely throughout the year even beyond COVID_19 – read about our deep cleaning HERE)
3. Bio-cleaning – a combination of the cleaning services mentioned above, plus fogging or misting where we spray a solution that settles and remains on the surface – usually done as a reactive measure but becoming more popular now as a preventative cleaning service due to COVID_19. (read about our bio-cleaning services HERE and watch the video below)
youtube
We use Hospital Grade disinfectant, containing live bacteria that continues to neutralize viruses for hours after application.
COVID-Cleaning Workplace Checklist:
Most people don’t know just how many high-touch surfaces and items there are in any given room or building… Below is a handy checklist ofsix priority areas within commercial buildings that need to be kept clean and germ free, in this brave new world:
Foyers and Entrances:
Access Points – locks and door handles, alarms, keypads & light switches
Elevators/ Lifts – external/ internal buttons, doors, walls, floor & railings
Furniture – armchairs, chairs, desks & tables
Larger areas – pillars, screens, floors, carpets, rugs & walls
General workspace:
Furniture – chairs, desks and tables, cupboards & shelves
Electronics – keyboards, phones, computer screens & photocopiers
Larger areas – doors, partitions, screens, floors, carpets & walls
Kitchens:
Furniture – benches, tables, chairs & stools, cupboard doors & handles
Electronics – fridge, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, kettle & coffee machines
Cups/ Mugs, Dishes & Cutlery – use/ get a dishwasher, no hand washing!
Larger Areas – splash-backs, tiled surfaces, floors & walls
Bathrooms:
Hygiene – hand wash, sanitiser, paper towels & toilet paper
Porcelain – in & around toilets & urinals, basins/ sinks & tiled surfaces
Silverware – tap handles, toilet & hand dryer buttons
Larger areas – doors, tiled surfaces, floors and walls
Meeting & Board Rooms:
Furniture – chairs, tables, cupboards, shelves & window blinds
Electronics – speaker phones, computers, keyboards, remotes & control panels
Larger areas – doors, floors, carpets & walls
Reception & Waiting Rooms:

Remember every workplace and building is unique! The items in the checklist above are a guide only and based on a traditional office-style building. Some items may not be applicable to your business or there may be additional considerations for particular industries – such as individual retailers or chains of retailers, malls or shopping centres, colleges or universities and lots more…

Webcomic Recommendations No One Asked For:
I......... Spent 2 hours putting together a list of my webcomic recommendations, with summaries and reviews, because I was reworking my blog... And really I don’t think anyone ever goes directly on to my blog proper, so it feels kind of foolish to have that there where no one will see it, so I’m actually going to post it as well:
Webcomics are honestly just so tight, and there’s such a vast variety of them that there’s something for everyone, if not a few somethings for everyone! I’m personally all about indie games, but if there’s another indie market that I feel like the internet has created a space for it’s comics. After I started writing this I realized I have a uh… Lot of recommendations. Also, I may be an idiot for not using the author’s own summaries???
Regularly updating:
KILL SIX BILLION DEMONS - A comic about a college girl, Allison, given mystical powers beyond her understanding, and thrust into a celestial world filled with angels and demons, where the lines of good and evil are blurry at best. With the help of friends she meets along the way, she must navigate her new powers, and save her boyfriend from forces that would destroy existence. Kinda dark thematically (with very rare and minor gore), but a great comic if you love action, fantasy, and fantastic art. One of my favorites.
AWFUL HOSPITAL - Another one of my favorites. After her child becomes terribly sick, and doctors tell her that there’s nothing that they can do, a mother wakes up in a mysterious, otherworldly hospital. She must navigate this confusing and sometimes horrifying hospital to save her child and get home, and on the way, she makes many odd friends and unknowable enemies, and learns that her child’s sickness may be part of something larger. This comic is funny, has cool action, a unique format, and lots of great, though ghastly, character designs.
GUNNERKRIGG COURT - A coming of age story about two girls, Antimony and Kat, as they try to find their place in each other’s lives, and the two clashing worlds that surround them, the massive technological complex that is their school and home, Gunnerkrigg Court, and the forest across the river, where magic and fantastic creatures thrive, under the watchful eye of the trickster god Coyote. Another great one for if you like fantasy, but is usually a lot lighter, with a peak of intensity about equal to… Like, Scooby Doo on Zombie Island, I think. I’ve only gotten into this one pretty recently, but it’s good.
PARANATURAL - After his family moves to his dad’s old home town, Max discovers that he has magical powers, and becomes part of the Paranatural Activities club at his school, a group of students and their adviser who all have magical powers, and use them to protect the populace from ghosts, as well as investigate the many magical mysteries of the town. This comic is great, and mostly focuses on action and comedy. The art is a very colorful cartoony style, and the characters are drawn very… fluid, rubbery. The best way to put it is that the artist has really put a lot of effort into making characters consistently as expressive as possible, and that good old Disney/Looney Toons/Tom & Jerry stretchiness makes for very good visual comedy.
HOUSEPETS! - Another one of the earliest webcomics I ever read! Housepets is… largely a comedy comic, following the lives of anthropomorphized pets in a small neighborhood. They go on adventures, and live the fun yet complicated lives of an open society of people with unbelievable amounts of free time. However, sometimes there are bigger drama/adventure arcs, which are really good! A lot of the times amazing art or cool action are what draw me into adventure stories, but I just think the plot of this comic can be really good and surprisingly deep for a humor comic. And it’s still loose enough, and in the newspaper comic style that you can usually jump in very often (not every strip, mind you but in pretty small arcs) without feeling like you’ve missed a ton. Long too, lots to read, recommend.
STAND STILL STAY SILENT - SSSS is a comic that takes place 90 years after the end of the world. A zombie-like virus with strong mystical qualities has wiped out not just human, but much of the world’s mammalian life. In Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Finland, and Denmark), in spite of the virus, society continues to exist, and most people live normal, happy lives. Our comic follows a research team, formed on a hairstring budget to travel into the infected zone, collect information on the virus and state of the fauna there, and, secretly, to collect books to sell back home. A great fantasy adventure drama that updates very often, and has really good art.
CUCUMBER QUEST - In spite of order this is actually the last one I’m writing, and I’m tired, so I’m going to copy the book one summary from Amazon:
What happens when an evil queen gets her hands on an ancient force of destruction? World domination, obviously. The seven kingdoms of Dreamside need a legendary hero. Instead, they’ll have to settle for Cucumber, a nerdy magician who just wants to go to school. As destiny would have it, he and his way more heroic sister, Almond, must now seek the Dream Sword, the only weapon powerful enough to defeat Queen Cordelia’s Nightmare Knight. Can these bunny siblings really save the world in its darkest hour? Sure, why not?
Cucumber Quest is good, the art is colorful and bright, all of the characters are relatable and real, including the villains, there’s cool adventures sequences and plot, and it’s a very fun comic. There’s humor and love and struggle in the comic, and it’s very well done.
GIRL GENIUS - Girl Genius follows Agatha Heterodyne, up and coming mad scientist, on her many adventures to save herself, her friends and the world if it’s along the way. It’s hard, however, competing with an entire world of mad scientists, as well as the Heterodyne legacy, one filled with chaos and bloodshed up until recently. I like Girl Genius a lot. It doesn’t move through the story very fast, but there’s a lot of solid world building, and more importantly, very intriguing sci-fi action and adventure happening inside of that world! I’m also pretty sure they do a radio show or podcast or something with additional Agatha adventures on top of the comic.
SUPERNORMAL STEP - After leading a life as a drifter after the death of her father, Fae is pulled into an alternate world where magic is real. There, she tries to find her place in life, master the magic that the world around her runs on, and get home to plain old earth in one piece. Lots of cool action, every character has really got their own style of magic. I can honestly tell you that it’s good, but I read it over such a long period of time that it’s got a pretty vague impression in my head.
ATOMIC ROBO - Robo is a skilled an dedicated scientist. He’s also an atomic robot built and raised by Nikola Tesla. Atomic Robo follows the titular character on the many adventures of his life, from WWII to the present. As the head of Tesladyne Industries, Robo is dedicated to researching the outlandish, the weird, the impossible! And when the world calls on him, he and his Action Scientists defend it from giant monsters, cosmic anomalies, and mad science. Atomic Robo is great if you love action, robots, monsters, humor, and velociraptors duel-wielding uzis. Highly recommended.
DUMBING OF AGE - As the title would imply, Dumbing Of Age is a pretty standard coming of age comedy! Starring a wide cast of likable and complex character, DoA follows a group of college freshmen as they learn more about themselves, and grow beyond the bubbles that they were raised in. I think the underpinnings of the comic are pretty strongly on humor, but there’s a lot of drama, and conversations about meaningful things too. There are lots of varying depictions of drama, depression, anxiety, and the ways people deal with pressure, and fear. But there’s also a lot of love and friendliness. It’s a good comic, and probably the only solid slice-of-life on my list.
MANLY GUYS DOING MANLY THINGS - This comic follows The Commander, a bio-engineered super soldier sent back in time to run a temp agency. This particular temp agency specializes in reintroducing particularly brutish video game, comic, and movie protagonists back into normal polite society. Duke Nukem isn’t much of a man for customer service, however. Later on the comic drifts more toward Commander’s personal life. (So slice of life, but with a buff, and actually surprisingly sensitive and forward thinking, super commando from the future.) Has been in a bit of a slump in terms of updates recently, but they still happen.
GRRL POWER - Sidney, a slightly hyper nerd who works at a comic shop, stumbles upon an artifact that gives her a variety of superpowers. After being exposed, she becomes a member of the government’s brand new super hero organization. This comic is a lot of fun, with some cool superpowers and super fights. Lots of humor, very consistently, in any given scene. Sadly, it is a bit fan service-y, though in the grand scale of things it’s not the worst offender (though definitely the worst you’ll see on this list).
SWORD INTERVAL - This is a pretty new one for me, but it’s great. At some indeterminate point in the past (potentially as far back as the civil war, if not farther), the earth became exposed to monsters and magic in ways that it wasn’t before. Humanity still exists and survives, but plagued by supernatural forces. Our main character is Fall, a very new monster hunter, who after years in witness protection, has decided to track down and kill the Hierophant, the powerful monster that killed her parents. Sword interval does a lot of really cool fantasy stuff, with new takes on classic monsters, and magic and monsters in settings that we don’t often see them in, out in the open in present day. It’s something I wish we could see more. Good action and art, particularly character design.
BACK - Abigail is back. From the dead? From a very long sleep in a box underground? She doesn’t know either. She doesn’t know a lot of things. What she does know is that she’s got two guns, is nearly indestructible, and is prophesied to go north to the capital and end the world. With the help of the young cleric Michael, who supplements her absolute lack of all knowledge and common sense, Abigail fights her way through the kingdom, and past the kings many superpowered deputies. Back is cool, back is funny, and sometimes has some good action. I wouldn’t consider it one of my favorites, but it’s a comic I started and I’ve kept up with, so that’s saying something.
MARE INTERNUM - Not very long yet, and I only recently read it, but Mare Internum is really good. I don’t want to spoil it too much, honestly, especially because it’s so short, but it’s a sci-fi adventure comic about being trapped, underground, on Mars, and finding life there. The art is great, the story so far is well written, and the dialogue is good. I really don’t want to spoil it, but there are some great concepts in it and you should read it.
OPHIUCHUS - A very new comic about an ancient stone guardian who is whisked away to another, far off world. Here, he is employed to help two of this world’s denizens defeat the blight that has corrupted and destroyed their once almost utopian world. The art for this is really good. The comic is not currently long enough to comment on much else, but it seems interesting, sci-fi with a touch of fantasy.
Slowly Updating:
AVA’S DEMON - Ava’s Demon is about a girl, Ava who has spent her entire young life haunted by a ghost that torments her, before finally making a deal. The ghost, Wrathia, will help her become a normal girl, with friends and a normal life, but first, Ava must track down the ghosts of Wrathia’s most powerful allies, and help her dissolve the massive interplanetary empire that is TITAN. Ava’s Demon is amazing. The story is good, but I think the comic’s greatest strength is absolutely stunning and polished art. Strong recommendation.
THE PROPERTY OF HATE - RGB is a self-described monster, a sharp dressed man with a TV for a head. However, he’s looking for a hero to guide on a quest. RGB whisks our young protagonist, the Hero, to a world that exists beside our own a world completely fueled and inhabited by our creativity, our stories. RGB protects the Hero from these dangers, guiding her on a mission unknown, through a world that, although mystical, seems to have lost its hope.
HE IS A GOOD BOY - Slow but large updates. This comic follows the life a sentient acorn, Crange, after the death of his parent (a tree) to a lumberjack. Crange is kind of a bit of a loser, and stumbles around his world of sentient rocks and bugs getting into all sorts of trouble and hijinks. These hijinks almost always result in someone’s death, which Crange is impressively unphased by. HIAGB is fantastic, in my opinion. The art is great, the humor is great, especially the visual comedy, and the story is good. However, it gets real dark, and gory. But if you’re fine with that, it IS a (dark) comedy comic, and a good one.
THE LAST HALLOWEEN - One Halloween, the darkness opens up, and monsters pour out from the seams between our world and theirs. Approximately 7 billion monsters, in fact. Mona, a young girl and horror fanatic finds herself thrown into a world of chaos and horror, on the run from her own monster, and forced to look for a way to save the world, with the help of ghosts, zombies, vampires, and even monsters themselves. In spite of the fact that this comic can be VERY dark, I think one of its big hooks is humor and likable characters, on top of great art and plot. I really like it. This comic maybeshouldn’t be on the slow update list, but the artist is just picking up speed after a long hiatus, so…
ROMANTICALLY APOCALYPTIC - The apocalypse happened, and Charles Snippy missed it. Humanity was wiped out in a war against it’s own, ever-present AI, and Charles Snippy, a scientist/tour guide without the implants made it out alive, only to wander alone this is until he meets Zee Captain, an ever positive, gender question mark, maniac who wanders the wasteland with their insane assistant Pilot. Snippy, Captain and Pilot wander the wasteland, facing off against monsters, raiders, and the laws of physics in a mind warping and illogical adventure.
On Hiatus:
DERELICT - Like a surprisingly large number of comics on this list, in Derelict, the world has ended. A strange Miasma travels the world, killing billions, and bringing with it gargoyle-like monsters who fear the daylight. However, the world goes on, in a small, broken way, and our story follows a scavenger in this new world.
HELVETICA - So, you die, and then what? Well, life goes on. This is what Helvetica learns, after he dies and reemerges into an afterlife that seems shockingly similar to the world of the living, with work, pressure, responsibility, danger, and just plain old boring life. Except everyone is a skeleton. Helvetica is very resistant to accept this new life in death. This one is pretty short so far, and hasn’t updated in a while, but it’s good.
VIBE - Hasn’t update in a year and a half, but what’s there is good (Honestly, it’s super sad it hasn’t update, I like it a lot). Vibe follows Baron, a young shaman, a spiritual master who is able to expel negative emotions (bad vibes) from the human body. Only those emotions then become monsters, who a shaman must fight to complete the process! With the help of his Loa (they’re like familiars), he navigates life as a teenager, and his increasingly complex and dangerous life as a shaman. I really like this comic. There’s a lot of very cool and dynamic action, and the artist makes great use of a ton of bright colors.
THE ABOMINABLE CHARLES CHRISTOPHER - This one hasn’t updated in about a year, but what’s there right now is good. Charles Christopher is a Sasquatch, living in the woods on the edge of society. Though he himself is fairly soft, and simple, the wilderness around him is full of anthropomorphized animals who go about shockingly human social and professional lives. The comic follows Charles Christopher as he interacts with the world of these animals, and becomes tangled in a vast spiritual quest.
POWER NAP - Hard to know exactly where to put this one. It’s currently VERY slow updating. Power Nap takes place in a world where the majority of mankind is reliant on a drug that allows them to live 24/7 without sleep. However, there are those who are allergic to the medicine, who live their lives out of sync with their peers, protected by the government, but effectively second class citizens. However, in a sleepless world, over-saturated by virtual reality, the human subconscious has found ways to seep into reality.
THE FANCY ADVENTURES OF JACK CANNON - I want to start this out by saying this comic is probably dead, without a 100% resolution. However, it’s currently 492 pages, and a LOT of the storyline covered in that span was resolved. Such that, if they’d wanted to, I could’ve seen the author wrapping it up. I digress. Jack Cannon is about a kid moving to a new school, where he finds the bullies are able to hack reality. Somehow immune to hacks, Jack fights the bullies, and in doing so, puts himself on the stage of a worldwide battle against hackers. Lots of really cool action in this, one of the first few webcomics I read.
Complete:
HOMESTUCK - If you’re here, you are probably at least aware of Homestuck. It’s about a bunch of goofy awkward teen friends who get sucked into a cosmic (video) game, with the fate of the universe at stake, but you know, they’ve still got that teen angst. Time travel is involved. It’s a very long, fun, and dramatic comic which is heavily influenced by RPGs and point and click adventures.
THE ADVENTURES OF DR. MCNINJA - The pressures of being a doctor AND ninja are immense, but on either front, you can trust that Dr. McNinja is the man for the job. Born into an Irish ninja family, Dr. McNinja longs for a life where he can do medicine in peace, but finds himself constantly pulled into a string of action packed adventures, fighting giant monsters, bandits riding velociraptors, and dueling radical interdimensional kings. This one if fairly long, a bit over 1800 pages, but it’s really good and well done. Again, there is a lot of both action and humor (I’m big on that), with some surprisingly meaningful and well-done story arcs in spite of how silly the premise is.
REMIND - This one is about a girl who lives in a lighthouse on the edge of a town whose main draw is the “Lizard Man” legend that her own father made up. However, after her cat one day starts walking on two legs and talking, claiming to be one of many said lizard men, they both go on a journey to discover the truth. This one was OK. The story and sci-fi elements are both alright bot not great. But it’s not super long, so if you have the time, maybe read it.

Top Tips From The Horses Mouth
https://ift.tt/2OyIIsD
Daniel Ramot
The cofounder and CEO of Via Transportation, a carpooling service that has raised almost £300 million in funding, reveals what he has learnt…

“I think who you spend your time with can be more important than what you’re working on. When launching Via, I had a network of the smartest people [from university] I could hire to build our algorithm and technology.”
It’s never too late to change track
“I realised in my third year that academia wasn’t for me. I was reverse engineering when really I wanted to build things. I still finished my degree and my experience working with data has proved very useful.”
Don’t rush
“I didn’t rush to start a business, because, as a graduate student, I was financially unstable, but also none of my ideas were good enough – and I didn’t have the right partner.”
Prove your product
“We thought we could build the technology and that every city in the world and every public transportation authority would want to use it. We soon realised we had to build the product to show them it actually worked.”
Stop talking about it
“We took six months to convince ourselves that our idea would work. But we should have launched right away. You think you’re reducing your risk by doing diligence around your idea, but actually the risk of someone else launching your idea increases.”
Nothing is above your pay grade
“I’ve started to hear the phrase ‘above your pay grade’, which I dislike. I expect people at Via to try to engage with every problem. If you’re ambitious, then your goal should be to engage with problems one or two levels higher than you.”
David Hieatt
The cofounder of Hiut Denim Co, the jeans label worn by everyone from the Arctic Monkeys to Meghan Markle and now with a three-month waiting list for orders, reveals what he has learned…

Put yourself in a corner
“I quit my A-levels and started a sports clothing business. The petrol gauge in my car didn’t work, so I never knew if there was any petrol – the only sure-fire way to make sure I got home was to sell like hell.”
Read up
“I was unemployed for over a year until I read Ogilvy On Advertising, which said you don’t need any qualifications to work in the creative department of an advertising agency.”
It’s about your boss, not your pay packet
“My boss Paul Arden was the Steve Jobs of advertising. He taught me never to compromise for financial reasons. Who cares about your job title? The real question is: who’s your teacher?”
Make a splash
“I wanted to exhibit our T-shirts at a show, but it was £5,000 for a stand. So I just painted two models as if they were wearing the T-shirts. We were banned within 30 minutes, but every single magazine – and the event – ran images of the stunt.”
Tell a story
“A great brand is a great story. For Hiut Denim, our small town in Wales used to make jeans, so we wanted to give 400 people their jobs back. That’s a great story.”
Don’t rush to sell
“Sell your company once you don’t love it any more. If you sell what you love and someone else messes it up, you’re going to feel it. If you’re enjoying the ride, stay on the horse.”
Ryan Prince
The founder and CEO of hotel-style apartment rental chain Uncle, which owns more than 1,200 properties with £500 million worth of assets, reveals what he has learnt…

Beware the shortcut
“I realised I could cram my entire university schedule into two days, leaving a five-day weekend. I ended up regretting never taking advantage of all the great things I could have done. Now I’ve gone 180 degrees the other way.”
Embrace your anxieties
“My father arrived in Canada after the Second World War with his parents, who were Holocaust survivors. He was born in a displaced persons camp. I grew up mindful that I had nothing to fall back on and you never know what’s around the corner. I had to look after myself financially.”
Trust your mid-life crisis
“I had a mid-life crisis at 25. I realised I was much too much of a control freak to passively invest in business and just hope they did well. I needed a more reliable career.”
Reconsider the norm
“You judge hotels according to their brands and reviews, but when renting you have no idea what you’re signing up for. That’s backwards. So I thought, why isn’t there a hotel brand for living? Uncle was born out of that question.”
Track consumer trends
“I realised affordability in cities was going down, renting was growing and its stigma decreasing. It was once a badge of honour to own your car, now people will say why waste money doing that?”
Guy Ivesha
Meet the man behind London’s £40 million co-working members’ club Mortimer House

Delegate to busy people
“I learnt in the army that if you want something done, give it to someone busy. I found that if I gave it to someone with all the time in the world on their hands, they didn’t do it quickly.”
Keep abreast of industry news
“I subscribed to all the hospitality publications and one day learnt an Israeli billionaire [Yitzhak Tshuva] had acquired the Plaza Hotel in New York. Seven months later I managed to get a meeting with him through a mutual friend and he gave me a job.”
Get to the table
“For six months I wasn’t invited to meetings, until one day I saw an empty seat and sat down. I came every week until, months later, I found I was the closest person to the CEO.”
Can not can’t
“My father taught me never to admit you couldn’t do something. You can always find a way, even if you don’t know the answer yet.”
Opposites attract
“It’s wise if each partner brings a different set of competencies and qualities. My business partner doesn’t understand the hospitality world from the inside, but he very much understands property and finance.”
Staffing is a balancing act
“If you bring people onto the payroll too early, it can be heavy on working capital. But if you bring them in too late, then you can’t run the place.”
Will Dean
The cofounder and CEO of Tough Mudder – which hosts endurance events in eleven countries and now turns over more than $100 million a year – on mentors, marketing and the power of a Harvard MBA

Status matters
“Being able to go into a meeting with ‘I’m a Harvard MBA’ means people give you the benefit of the doubt and in certain situations that’s very helpful.”
Punch above your weight
“Aged 16, my schoolfriend Guy Livingstone and I made £20,000 from selling colour-changing nail varnish via Young Enterprise. To seem authoritative to distributors, I’d make them wait on the phone, saying, ‘Please hold while I put you through to Mr Dean.’”
Learn the basics
“I didn’t understand how marketing and advertising were different, so the Mirror helped me articulate a value proposition, keep customers happy and measure customer sentiment.”
Find a mentor
“The CEO of Take-Two [publisher of Grand Theft Auto], Strauss Zelnick, is good at giving me a prescriptive answer.”
Don’t be monomaniacal
“If you bring intense focus to everything you do then you burn through things quite quickly and your ideas won’t seem as exciting. I try to be more balanced now.”
It’s not going to calm down
“Young entrepreneurs think that in six months it calms down. But in six months it will have gone from 10/10 intensity to 9.8. If you do a good job, in two years it’ll be 8/10.”
Ben Silbermann
The CEO and co-founder of Pinterest, the £8.6 billion visual discovery app that ‘pins’ a trillion lifestyle recommendations a year, reveals what he has learnt…

Don’t over-research
“If you can build the product almost as quickly as you can research it, then you should just build the product. It’s better to get it into somebody’s hands.”
Listen and learn
“I learnt to listen very carefully to clients when I was consulting, which meant that at Pinterest our customer service was highly personal. I even gave my email and mobile number to customers.”
Sell and anti-sell
“We’d say to investors, ‘This is what Pinterest could be, but these are the risks.’ People that opt in knowing the risks are the partners you want.”
Don’t separate work and play
“You need to integrate your work and personal life. I don’t think it’s practical any more for people to have this really clean split. You need to develop patterns that work for your family as well as your job. You don’t want to be half on, half off all the time. It’s not a good way to live your life.”
Think laterally
“It was difficult to raise funds for Pinterest because of the financial crisis. So I entered a college business plan contest and the prize was meeting with venture capitalists First Market Capital in New York, which gave us half our money.”
Fabien Riggall
The founder of Secret Cinema – the immersive cinematic experience that has sold more than half a million tickets since 2012 – reveals what he has learned.

Break the rules
“After watching Dead Poets Society, I escaped from school with £5 to start a life in London. I was inspired by the idea of romantic adventure. There was a huge search party and I was found.”
Look up the ladder
“I wanted to direct and produce, but I could see unhappy 50-year-old second-assistant directors with no hope of producing because the climb was so hard. So I started making short films.”
Blag it
“The confidence I got from telephone sales helped me as a producer. I’d get through to CEOs by pretending to be my own assistant and creating an illusion that I was successful.”
Manners maketh man
“We grew the Future Shorts community by sending the audience notes saying, ‘Thank you for coming. We look forward to seeing you again.’ We asked them to let us know their thoughts on the films.”
Dust yourself off
“Our Back To The Future screening was our biggest to date, selling 80,000 tickets. Next year, we went bigger with Star Wars and sold 100,000 tickets.”
Change your scene
“Last week I felt down so I went to Paris, walked around, sat in cafés and wrote. I immediately felt better. Similarly, when I moved to New York, it gave me a sense of optimism and the feeling that anything could happen.”
Ayman Hariri, Vero
Ayman Hariri, founder of the ad-free media-sharing platform Vero, which currently operates across 100 countries, reveals what he has learnt…

Learn from the masters
“I’ve used every single product that Apple has released in the last 15 years. The team and I try to apply Apple’s pursuit of simplicity and usefulness in everything we do with Vero.”
Have the last word
“We had to close Epok because we didn’t design things the right way. We should have taken out more of the decision makers and created something far more centralised.”
Nail the snowball effect
“When we hit one million users, we will start charging membership of the equivalent of a couple of cups of coffee. A million is a good starter for the snowball effect; after that point, the snowball accumulates and rolls down the hill.”
Emails aren’t real work
“Working with massive teams on huge construction projects, I learnt that there’s no replacement for human communication. Saying, ‘I sent them an email’ doesn’t mean you did your job.”
Work remotely
“If you find someone you want to recruit somewhere else in the world, why make them relocate? They are probably amazing because of the culture they live in. Vero has no office, we all work remotely using [team messaging app] Slack.”
Start what you finish
“I don’t understand companies who start their marketing push and say they’ll figure out their monetisation strategy later. Very few businesses have been able to be successful on the advertising model.”
Follow us on Vero for exclusive music content and commentary, all the latest music lifestyle news and insider access into the GQ world, from behind the scenes insight to recommendations from our Editors and high-profile talent.
James Park, Fitbit
The cofounder and CEO of the £6 billion activity tracker company Fitbit, which now has more than 23.6 million active users worldwide, reveals what he has learned.

Don’t rush
“Epesi was not successful – so many things went wrong. I was only 22 at the time, very inexperienced, and I didn’t really know what I was doing. I realised I had some more growing up to do. I needed more time and to meet more people.”
Hire up
“We started Fitbit with only two employees: a monumental task. You don’t want to over-hire before you’ve nailed your product, but a few more hands would have helped.”
Go public or go home
“Going public is good for investors and employees. Ours was the largest consumer electronics IPO in US history.”
Trust your gut
“I dropped out just before finals because I got an internship at Morgan Stanley. As an entrepreneur, you have to take risks. But as an engineer, there’s always a backup.”
Watch and learn (and copy)
“When the Nintendo Wii came out, I was interested in its sensors, as well as how it turned gaming into something friendly and active. This was technology with positive impacts. I wanted to put this magic into something more portable.”
Get enough capital
“In software you can make mistakes and learn from them cheaply; in hardware every mistake is expensive to fix and takes much longer. If I could go back, I’d make sure we were better capitalised to cushion our mistakes and sleep sounder at night!”
Kris Thykier, Archery Pictures and PeaPie Films
The producer responsible for Harry Brown, Riviera and Kick-Ass – and founder of Archery Pictures and PeaPie Films – reveals what he has learned…

Degrees aren’t everything
“I asked to defer because I got a job as a film runner. Then I deferred another year and, two years later, I was already starting to hire people who had degrees. I thought, ‘Well this doesn’t seem to be an issue.’ I never took up my place.”
“Partnering with Matthew Vaughn on MARV Films was interesting. He’s incredibly tough in his deal-making, very involved in the detail. That was a side of producing I hadn’t understood yet. We were a good balancing act. I think I tempered him.”
Move with the times
“I began watching a lot more TV and realised it was as exciting a medium for original storytelling as film. So I raised some money to build a new business, focusing on both.”
Turn your passion into your career
“My aunt was a cineaste and took me to inappropriate films such as Alien when I was very young. If questioned, she said it was incredibly rude to mention my dwarfism.”
Keep your ego in check
“At MARV, we made four films in 18 months and I thought I was born to be a producer and that I was a genius. But then, when I set up PeaPie, nothing worked [initially] and all my projects fell apart. It was a valuable lesson in hubris.”
Taavet Hinrikus, TransferWise
The CEO of money-sending service TransferWise – a unicorn startup on track for revenues of £100 million this year – reveals what he has learned…

Weigh up your options
“I dropped out of university to become the first employee of Skype, because I knew I would learn so much more there. If Skype had gone bust, I could always have returned to university, and I’d still have been a little smarter than before.”
Don’t rush into a job
“I did an MBA because when I left Skype I didn’t have a clear idea of whether I wanted to create or join a company. But you don’t need an MBA to become an entrepreneur.”
You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig
“No amount of PR works if you’ve got a bad product. It has to be better than the competition and that comes down to making sure you do one thing really well.”
Pace yourself
“Building a business is a marathon, not a sprint. I don’t believe it when people tell me they’ve been working 80-hour weeks for five years in a row. I just don’t think that’s possible.”
Look beyond the money
“Doing something that empowers people makes you realise how boring it would be to work for a place where the goal is just to make more money. It’s much easier to get out of bed and look forward to 12 hours of work if you’re making the world a better place.”
Get your pitch right
“A good pitch for funding requires clarity. You need to understand the problem you’re solving, why you’re in a good place to do it and your solution needs to be ten times better than the existing one. It also has to be a big problem.”
Mark Wogan, Homeslice
The co-founder and Creative Director of Homeslice (along with his Executive Chef Ry Jessup and his brother and Homeslice Managing Director Alan Wogan) a former street-food pizza stall that now turns over £4.5 million a year across three permanent London sites, reveals what he has learned.

Don’t underspend
“We thought we’d saved a lot of money when we opened the restaurant for only £200,000, but then we had to shut it three years later to install a new kitchen. What you think is important, like the light switches, isn’t. Instead, ask yourself: does your fridge work?”
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
“I was working 16-hour days, six days a week and it nearly killed me. I had no personal life. But if you want to work in the hospitality industry, it’s vocational, not something you do on the side.”
Academia isn’t everything
“I was moved on after my headmaster found an empty bottle of vodka and two of his crystal tumblers in my bedside cabinet. I only got three GCSEs. We all make mistakes; the point is not to be defined by them.”
The best part of a pitch is passion
“We did a very poor pitch to our first landlord: a four-page PowerPoint presentation and some pizza. An experienced restaurateur would have said, ‘They don’t have a clue.’ But we were passionate. Starting out, to win a pitch you need to get your passion across.”
Don’t look like a chain (even if you are)
“Aside from the wood-fired oven (hand-built by Ry), the décor in each Homeslice is completely different. Never hand over the creative reins to somebody else. We say exactly what themes, colour and furniture we want.”
Brian Chesky, Airbnb

The CEO and cofounder of Airbnb – the $31 billion home-sharing company that operates across 191 different countries with more than 150 million users – reveals what he has learned…
“At school, my teachers would say, ‘You’re a designer. You could design the world you live in.’ That was very inspiring. But, at 3DID I was designing products that would end up in landfill. I quit my joband left LA with $1,000 in my bank.”
Stop fretting about copycats
“I remember when I started Airbnb, somebody told me, ‘Don’t worry about someone stealing your idea. They will only dismiss it.'”
Go direct to source
“By picking the right source, you can fast-forward learning something new. I’m pretty shameless when asking for help, including from Mark Zuckerberg and Warren Buffett. The circumstances might be different, but you can learn the outlying principles and see if they apply to you.”
Choose failure over regret
“Jeff Bezos’ ‘Regret Minimisation Framework’, advises choosing fewer regrets over fewer failures. Each year, it’s harder to do something new – you have one less year of your life to do it.”
Live with your cofounders
“The turning point for Airbnb was when my two cofounders and I lived and worked together seven days a week. Bouncing ideas around late at night formed some magical moments and that close bond is what builds your company.”
Grip any crises
“We had a PR nightmare after renters trashed a home in San Francisco. I was advised to increase the guarantee for hosts ten-fold. In a crisis, if you move in one direction, you’re usually OK.”
Blaise Belville, Boiler Room

Founder and CEO of Boiler Room, the live club music platform that has streamed over 3.5 billion minutes since launch and made £6.5 million last year, reveals what he has learned…
Get out of your comfort zone
“I started selling makeover vouchers at Oxford Circus for £400 a day. After I gave one to my girlfriend, I realised it was a scam, but it was interesting because I had to go up to people and put myself out there like some awful kind of salesman.”
Don’t get stuck making easy money
“Running a club night was making me £2,000 a week in cash, but upon turning 20 I met a 30-year-old club promoter and thought, ‘I do not want to be that guy.'”
Don’t be so sure of yourself
“Everyone told me not to do it, that it made no sense to refurbish a building I didn’t own. It was, indeed, a disaster. After five years of work, getting vitiligo and tuberculosis from stress, I almost bankrupted myself and those involved. It was a good lesson to be less arrogant.”
Start young
“My parents went bankrupt, so I started a CD-burning business and sold them at school. This developed my confidence that there were ways outside the traditional system to make money.”
Follow your itchy feet
“The magazine became pretty popular and Vice saw us as a competitor. But two and a half years in, I realised it wasn’t really going anywhere. I was 26 and bored of doing all this work and not having enough cash, so I moved on.”
Put the vision first
“When you first go into something creative, it’s a mistake to focus on the money. Do it for the right reasons and it’s more likely to turn into a business than if you try and force it.”
William Shu, Deliveroo
The co-founder and CEO of Deliveroo, the largest UK-based ‘restaurant-to-home’ delivery service, which operates across 12 countries and is now valued at $1 billion, tells us what he’s learned…

Embrace your (stranger) quirks
“When I started, the bank gave me $25 a night for dinner. On the first night I was so excited I ordered 25 burgers to the office from Burger King, as they were 99 cents each. It sounds odd to be so passionate about food delivery, but I never get bored talking about my [current] job.”
Ignore baffled friends
“I’d identified this huge gap in the market [for Deliveroo], but the average Londoner thought it made no sense. No one outside New York understood either, but I went ahead anyway.”
Do it yourself
“I was the first Deliveroo rider, seven days a week for eight months. My flatmate thought I’d lost my mind. I still do it now, once or twice a week. It allows me to see what’s going on.”
Don’t shy away from small jobs
“I was a waiter at a restaurant called Frank’s near campus for three years and it taught me how to be professional towards people. It’s not something you learn at school.”
Right idea, wrong time? Hold fire
“Smartphones and tablets didn’t exist and riders needed them. It wasn’t practical until the tech took off, which coincided with my tenure at business school. I was confident my idea would work eventually – things always change.”
Avoid business for business’ sake
“I met this super-smart guy from business school who was about to launch an online marketplace for handmade pet accessories. When I saw him a year later, he said he’d dropped it. Why? He realised he didn’t like dogs. If your start-up has no emotional resonance, it’s problematic. You’re going to get bored.”
Kayvon Beykpour, Periscope
The CEO and founder of live-streaming app Periscope, which has just celebrated it’s second-year anniversary, reveals what he has learned…

Have some gumption
“I got my biggest break by relentlessly hanging out in the photo studio. Eventually, one of the main photographers was out for lunch when he was meant to be on a shoot, and I got to take his place.”
Life’s too short not to travel
“‘F*** it, go travel'” was a colleague’s advice as I was debating whether to take time off. Travelling helped me build empathy with others.”
Keep your ambition sky high
“When we see Periscope being used in places like Ferguson or the House Of Representatives, in Nepal after the earthquake, or in the Middle East during the migrant crisis… it validates our vision.”
Know when to let go
“At Goodby, and then at Terriblyclever, we moved from project to project very quickly, working for several different big companies without being able to sink our teeth into anything. I didn’t find it satisfying.”
Never idle
“My work ethic was inspired by a scolding I received when I was 12, getting lunch money by cleaning fire extinguishers for hospitals. I was twiddling my thumbs having finished my work and my boss said, ‘If you have nothing to do, sweep the floor. Don’t just sit around.'”
Trust your gut
“We didn’t know if Periscope would work, but we didn’t care. We thought it should exist – that the world deserved a teleportation device.”
Carter Cleveland, Artsy
Carter Cleveland, the founder and CEO of Artsy, which allows buyers to choose from over 500,000 works held by galleries and auction houses, reveals what he has learned…

Listen to your quirks
“I knew my idea for Artsy was an uncontainable passion when during job interviews I would start pitching the idea to employers. It was a completely irrational interview technique.”
Torture thyself
“I joined Princeton’s dance company and before our first big performance, I was vomiting with nerves. Without that experience, it would’ve been harder for me to take the risk of starting my own company.”
Strike while the iron is hot
“Timing was the main reason why Artsy succeeded. A year earlier it would have been too hard a sell for galleries; a year later and we would have been followers, not leaders.”
Don’t adopt your father’s workweek
“We have as few rules as possible. We don’t have mandated vacation, and we don’t have specific working hours. It’s impossible to know what the ‘best way’ is to achieve goals. It’s up to the individual.”
Relinquish control
“Our head of product suggested purple as our brand colour. I hated purple, so drafted an email arguing against it. Then I realised that you don’t hire the best person just to overrule them. I never sent the email.”
Be strict about your bedtime
“I began Artsy working 120 hours a week and staying in the office until 4am. I worked weekends and felt guilty getting more than four hours sleep. In the end, my body shut down and I was unable to type.”

Resources to Start (and Grow) Your OT Business
The occupational therapy profession depends on entrepreneurs—not only to drive innovation and improve the quality of our care, but also to keep the profession itself moving forward.
The rapidly changing healthcare landscape means there are always new opportunities for us, and there is no shortage of niches we can fill to serve our clients.
There are even plenty of ways to leverage our experience to help other OT professionals thrive in their own careers.
Entrepreneurship is exciting and fulfilling, and it takes you on a journey that is unlike anything else you will ever experience.
But, taking that plunge can be downright scary—and justifiably so!
I’ve been blogging for over six years now, and in that time I’ve seen multiple OT businesses come and go. I’ve watched readers excitedly charge down the path of practice ownership, only to have life take them in another direction.
And that’s why many people stop short of diving into entrepreneurship: the unknown factors and risks can make even the bravest of souls think twice about whether it’s worth it.
Luckily, I’ve witnessed a major sea change over the past few years.
While we business owners used to be largely left to our own devices, we now enjoy access to countless resources and experts to help us get our business ideas off the ground in the first place—and then take them to the point of thriving.
There are countless facets to starting a business, and it’s unrealistic to imagine we can be experts in everything from day one.
So, why not leverage the expertise of those therapists who have done it already?
That’s why I rounded up resources for occupational therapists who are interested in starting and growing a business. I limited this list to resources that are produced by fellow therapists (OTs, PTs, and SLPs).
Nurturing your OT business idea
If your business idea is in incubation, there are great resources out there to get your creative juices flowing.
The therapy podcasts listed below all focus on the business of therapy, and feature interviews with therapists who have been in the trenches growing their own practices.
The Cash-Based Practice Podcast | Dr. Jarod Carter, PT
The Cash PT Lunch Hour | Aaron LeBauer, PT
Functional Freedom Podcast | Paul Potter, PT
Health, Wealthy and Smart | Karen Litzy, PT, DPT
Seniors Flourish Podcast | Mandy Chamberlain, MOTR/L
Speech Therapy Private Practice Start-up | J. Kyle Meades, CCC-SLP
Start at Therapy Practice Podcast | Scott Harmon, OT
Therapy Insiders Podcast | UpDoc Media
If you are looking for even more guidance in fleshing out your idea, Jen Gash has a fantastic ebook, Selling OT: From Random Idea to Unique Value Proposition.
This encouraging and inspiring book was written specifically for OTs, and it helps you think through critical initial questions like:
What is my unique value proposition?
Who will my customers be?
How can I create a minimal viable product?
I also highly recommend following the WebPT blog, which covers pretty much everything OTs would need to know about starting, running, and growing their practices.
Just a few of the topics covered include:
Billing and accounts receivable
Compliance
Healthcare reform
Leadership, communication, and company culture
Marketing
Revenue diversification.
Technology
Consultants and coaches that help you launching and grow your OT business
Once you are ready to launch or grow your business, you may desire more in-depth or one-on-one help.
Whether you are looking for an ebook, a mastermind, a coach, or a consultation, there is someone out there to help. Here a few therapists who can help you take your business to the next level!
Melissa LaPointe, OT
When you’re building a business, you need inspiration, guidance, and support, and Melissa provides all of these things.
She’s an OT-turned mindset coach and consultant that works specifically with therapists—and you will not regret working with her!
In addition to consulting and one-on-one coaching, some of her most popular offerings include:
WHOT Business Academy: A supportive and inspirational membership community to help you build your women's health practice while balancing your own healing journey. Members have access to a combination of masterclasses, group coaching, business resources, special guest interviews and a private Facebook group.
Visionaries on Fire: A 9-month mastermind group filled with thought-leaders and change-makers in the women's health industry.
Strong Beginnings - An OT's Journey in Perinatal Health: This is a self-paced online program designed to give you the tools and resources to confidently grow your practice in prenatal/postnatal health.
Iris Kimberg, MS PT, OTR
Iris is a 34-year veteran in the business end of the therapy world and grew her own practice from scratch to a $14M multi-branch therapy company that she sold to a Fortune 500 Company.
She now consults privately with therapists across the country and also offers affordable workbooks, live and on-demand webinars, and generic business related templates for contracts and forms on her two websites www.nytherapyguide.com and www.privatepracticeopportunitiesandguidance.com.
Iris’ goal is to help therapists set up fiscally and legally sound practices, as well as offer actionable ideas on how best to strategically grow and eventually sell private practices.
To date she has worked with over 470 therapists and helped bring over two dozen practice sales to fruition.
Tomeico Faison, OT
Here’s Tomeico’s story in her own words:
From as early as I can remember, I have been enthusiastic about entrepreneurial endeavors. Born to teenage parents, who later divorced, I saw entrepreneurship as a way to help out the family financially in middle school. My first business was a tutoring and babysitting business that became so lucrative that my family decided to take over it.
As an adult, my love for entrepreneurship continued to grow. In spite of the vocation I chose, I was always led back to entrepreneurship. I have been an occupational therapist since 2001, helping others participate in meaningful daily occupations in spite of disability status. After working two years as an employee in a psychiatric hospital, I started Therapeutic Solutions, an occupational therapy business. My business was created for two reasons: I saw a need for occupational therapy consultative services for older persons with developmental disabilities and I needed a flexible schedule due to having a premature infant.
Therapeutic Solutions has now been in business for over 15 years offering innovative specialty services to include but not limited to, low vision rehab, mental health recovery services, home care services, domestic violence counseling and group home consultation. Therapeutic Solutions has grown the low vision division of the business from scratch with one referring provider in 2012 to currently over 90 referring eye doctors across the state, with six therapists providing in home low vision rehab services. The low vision division is still expanding with a mission to be a globally recognized leader with a model that can be easily replicated to serve this underserved population.
Although Therapeutic Solutions has successfully developed work in niche specialized markets, navigating the business systems of these markets has not always been easy. Therefore, I am a dedicated educator and advocate for the success of current and aspiring entrepreneurs in health and human service fields who want to serve underserved populations. I understand the frustrations that many therapists have in some traditional settings that focus on productivity and profit more than service and improving quality of life which results in less than optimal practice. I also believe that God has gifted me in the area of entrepreneurship in order to help create businesses with higher ethical standards.
As a business consultant and coach, my goal is to partner, guide and support health and human service entrepreneurs so that they can freely provide quality services in their dream businesses while still making a profit—it is possible. It is my hope that more therapists and health care providers will start more businesses that focus on serving and meeting unmet needs and I am available to help make that happen!

I am a huge fan of Daphne’s weekly email. Daphne is a physical therapist and leadership coach. Her focus is on coaching and developing leadership skills, rather than walking you through the nitty gritty of setting up a business. While she tends to work with larger organizations anyone taking on a leadership role at any level is wise to pay attention to the “soft” leadership skills she teaches about.
