Based on this post that I made. Happy reading! <3
-------- Steve has a staring problem. He knows this. He's been told this. And it's not something he can help or fix or find an alternative for. This is just what he knows.
It's something he's tried to maintain since he was a little boy. And, on that same note, is something he picked up while being a boy in a room with two adults who were fast talkers and big negotiators and all-in on the nature of their careers. But his parents certainly hate that he has a staring problem. Which, that's not unusual, most people hate that he does. Because he doesn't look them in the eyes for more than thirty seconds at a time. And even if he does, he doesn't hear a single thing they said, politely asking they start over, and feeling hurt when they just scoff as loud as possible and walk away from the conversation all together.
The audio just doesn't process. Never has. Probably never will.
He listens to music, but doesn't understand any meaning. He talks over the phone, but must have all other sound blocked out and the curtains shut and his eyes closed to imagine what the words look like leaving the other person's mouth. He argues, but loses track of the original point of the argument—when he laughs instead of apologizes.
And it would be fine—if—he wasn't close to losing his life every year. Where he has to listen to everybody and the important tiny details and the plans and the reasons for what they're doing. Which leads him to danger. Which gives him a bruised face. Which makes the listening even harder, once the concussion leaves and he's just got the leftover damage of his quirkiness.
It would be fine—if—he wasn't made to feel so stupid for what he must do. The jabs and the constant reminders and the...yeah, his sob story.
But there was Tommy Hagan and Carol Perkins, who he could keep up with. Because they'd talk about the same things over and over, until he could practically relay all the information, pulled straight from the deep crevices of his brain, and it ends up that they had forgotten, rather than him.
And there was Nancy Wheeler, who was polite enough to repeat things. Who had flash cards and a soft, focusing voice. It was easy to write off looking at her lips. "Eyes up here, Steve," she'd say. "Sorry," he'd respond sheepishly, "getting lost." And he'd chuckle and she'd giggle and then they'd kiss a little and he wouldn't be reminded that he's just a little weird. That, maybe, he just isn't normal.
Robin Buckley makes things easy-ish. She talks fast. And a lot. And she never looks him in the eyes, unless she's asking for a very serious favor, or he has something on his face, or she just feels the need (she claims it's that she hasn't looked in a while, but he shrugs her off every time). (If he can get away with staring at her lips, then she can get away with never looking him in the eyes.) He's mentioned, though, that he has a hard time following her sometimes. That he needs the words repeated a few times. Explained the lip thing, with a tense voice and a quake in his chest and his fingers tapping at the sides of his thighs. And, for a brief moment, he had felt like a creep. Like one of those weirdos that preys on the idea of women kissing. And he wanted to open up Family Video's register, shove his head inside, and sort himself out into the container of fives. But she shrugged, said "Okay," and went back on some ramble, to which he was immediately drawn to her mouth. And saw her repeat the name, Vickie, at least twenty times. He grinned and then when the store was empty, he leaned across the counter and teasingly said, "You have a big fat crush on Vickie, don't you?" To say that he was proud of her sputtering is an understatement.
Now, Dustin and the others were harder to get through. Because they moved at their own pace. And they don't really stop to add him to the conversation. He gets it, to an extent. He knows that he's not really all that intrigued in what they enjoy. (Even if he really leans into the conversation when they mention Sherlock Holmes or Dracula or Star Wars or, even, Star Trek. And he pretends to not be interested in their science fair projects. Or the one time he caught them huddled around a Sports Illustrated, in which he fought the urge to chat their ears off about both baseball and basketball statistics.) But there's a point in the conversations where he's made to feel a little dumb; even if he was staring where they were speaking, but they always grow frustrated, a huff of air released, when they notice he's not "paying attention" (translation: looking them in the eyes. "Because, Steve, it's just talking etiquette!" Dustin had shouted once).
He loves all of them anyway. Even if he misses words. And he loses track of what they were saying. He just wishes they were a little bit more forgivable about it at the end of the day.
Then, Eddie Munson is walking along side him in an alternate universe. He's peeled the vest off his back and chucked it at Steve. And they're talking. Jealous of one another, but talking. But, Eddie's voice goes soft and quiet, his eyes pointing towards Nancy's back.
Steve is looking at Nancy, words fading into the background. And it's not a moment of realization. Or a moment of longing. Yearning, what say you. No—it's one of his moments in which he's "listening," but not processing. So he looks back. And for a mere second, Eddie's eyes are big where Steve stares. Big and wet and curious. Big and wet and persuasive. Big and wet and not at all his lips and Steve is still not listening.
But his lips. Well, Steve's seen lips. These are pretty. They're pink. Chapped and bitten and plush appearing. Mesmerizing. Stretching over Eddie's sharp teeth, exposing dimples and smile lines, making his recent stubble more noticeable than it's ever been before. But his lips are pretty.
Like girls lips, Steve muses. Not really taking in what that means. Because Eddie's saying something about true love. And—shit—okay. Steve can get behind an act of true love. He can get behind sharing denim and coating Eddie's clothes in blood and staring down his lips and—god, his eyes, Steve can't help but notice once more.
Eddie's like a vulnerable cow. With pretty lips, he has to point out. Or a baby deer. With such pretty lips. And he's talking and Steve's finally listening. But it's not just processing. No, Steve's intrigued, interested even. He tilts his head like a curious puppy. Leaning in. Eddie's breath ghosts the tip of his nose. And, sure, it's a little rank. But weirdly sweet. Warm where Steve is otherwise cold. Warm in places Steve's never considered to feel warm in, but he's willing to give in, to wrap up in whatever Eddie has to say. If it all means more of him.
So, it makes sense that after all that they go through, Steve finds himself in Eddie's orbit. As a friend. As a trauma bond. As everything Eddie needs him to be.
He sits on the Munson's couch. On the cushion that dips a little too low. The lights orange and dim and casting beautiful streaks of almost candle light on Eddie's soft, beautiful features. Highlighting where his nose is the most bulbous. His pronounced Cupid's bow. The outer edges of his irises, golden and honey against the off-white of his scleras.
Eddie talks like Robin does. Excited. A lot. Fast. But his voice is soft, focused on the information—like Nancy's. It's teasing, like Dustin's. Soft, though. So gentle. Murmured. Which makes sense, if Steve were to stop and think about it for just a moment. With how late it is. With the little amount of weed they smoked. And it all just fits, with how slow and careful Eddie's lips move. As if testing the words. As if searching for what he means.
But, god, Steve is following along. Of course he is. Hanging onto each one of Eddie's words.
"So, the cashier at the record store got all apprehensive about selling me this tape. Which, I guess makes sense because it's a special edition. Comes with a photo card or whatever, but like—Come on, y'know? If he wanted it so bad, he should'a bought it the moment it dropped. Not my fault he slacks on not just his job, but also his opportunities," Eddie rambles. And, that's right, he's complaining about the music store encounter he had today. Trying to buy some album for some band. Steve got lost part of the way through, so he's not sure who exactly Eddie was getting a tape for. The style of music. But he has most of the information. He just—
Has to squint harder.
So, Steve leans in. As casual as he possibly can. And narrows his eyes at Eddie's lips. The word pretty comes to mind again. Because of course it does. And he can't pull his eyes away, no matter how hard he tries. For some reason, the tips of his fingers tingle a little. Wanting to reach out. Trace his lower lip, right where it sticks out, just above the divot of his chin. Would it be soft, he asks himself. Does he wear chapstick? Steve sighs softly. I wish I could...taste it. His eyes widen, just the tiniest bit. But he ignores that in favor of whatever Eddie is saying. If only he could make it out. He leans impossibly closer.
And there it is again. The soft puffs of warm air. On the tip of his nose. His own lips. Tickling his stubble. Eddie's breath smells like weed and strawberry Tab; a little bit of Kraft macaroni and cheese. Maybe the smallest trace of pepper—
"Uh, Steve?" Eddie nervously calls out. But gets no response. Steve is only a couple inches away from his face. Eyes hooded. Glassy. Zeroed in on Eddie's lips. He's not talking. Doesn't even give a hum. Just...keeps staring.
Eddie sucks in a breath. Eyes darting over Steve's face. He doesn't talk again, hoping maybe Steve will stop. But, nope. In fact, the only thing Eddie gets as acknowledgement for the fact he's stopped talking, is that Steve pouts. Upset. As if his lips no longer moving is some great catastrophe to Steve, some tragedy, some misfortune.
And, Eddie, the awful wreck that he is, can only assume that this means one thing.
Steve wants a kiss. And is, maybe, too chicken shit to close the gap.
So, with no other option. And definitely not wanting to get away from the heated, stirring, calm mask of Steve's face—Eddie presses his mouth against Steve's. Hesitantly smushing their lips together. Dragging his lower lip against Steve's soft scowling one.
And he pulls away. Because Steve isn't doing anything in response.
No, in fact, Steve is extremely expressive now.
Wide eyes. Mouth opened into a silent "Oh." His cheeks are flushed. And as quick as it came upon him, whatever realization that was, fades. Like a cartoon character, Steve's face melts into one of pure infatuation. Mouth lilting. His posture slouching. Eyes going soft against the extreme red of his face.
"Do that again," Steve whispers.
Eddie obliges. And he obliges. And he keeps obliging until they're under a cool top sheet, skin slick with sweat and eyes piercing one another's mouths.
That's when, in the silent air of Eddie's tiny bedroom, Steve admits the greatest thing in the world. "I don't really process when people are talking unless I'm looking at their mouth. I have to read their lips. I didn't—I wasn't trying to kiss you at first, but—" And the motherfucker giggles. "If that's all it took..." Then he's kissing Eddie again. Like it's the last thing he'll ever get to do. And Eddie thinks, If I die from running out of breath doing this, then I've done everything in my life correctly.
So, sure, Steve has a huge staring problem. And he doesn't really listen. And it's something he'll never fix, even if there's a way to.
But he finds that his technique—the thing he's crafted since he was a little boy—no longer works. At least, not on Eddie. Because suddenly, looking at his gorgeous pink lips makes Steve only able to think about one thing: Kissing. And he can't follow along unless he fulfills that want.
Eddie could be in the middle of a deep, all inclusive description of his recent trap in the campaign he's crafting. He could be singing. He could be complaining about some movie he rented. But that doesn't matter. Because he stops talking the moment Steve leans in and kisses him. Kisses like he needs it to live.
And though he rolls his eyes. Huffs a breath. Smirks and barrels on. There's that giddiness, that love pooling in Eddie' heart. Just knowing the effect he has on Steve. And the way he's affected, too, when Steve just whispers, "Sorry, I got lost again. Start over?"
He obliges. And he keeps obliging. And his lips are usually swollen by the time he's finally done rambling.
Steve stares. Eddie talks. And it's the combination of a lifetime.

Bonus scene 𓆩♡𓆪
from the CALL ME WHAT YOU WANT universe (18+)
strip club owner!eddie x fem!exotic dancer!hargrove!reader
timeline: 015, THIS SCENE, 016** | ** = smut
Eddie has an important question to ask you on your birthday.
contains: fluff, physical touch, flirting, loverboy!eddie, romantic eddie, implied history of abuse from billy
wc: 1k words
*play this while you read to really be immersed in st nostalgia* 🥹 (if you want)
♡
“Oh no,” you breathe.
Everything starts to make more sense when you see Steve waiting for you at Hellfire’s doors. He’s got the smuggest look on his face. You quickly try to turn and run the other way, already embarrassed. But the former Star Athlete is faster, immediately lunging at you to drag you into the club.
“Nope!” Harrington protests.
“Steve-” you begin.
“No no no no,” he shakes his head. “Where do you think you’re going, young lady?”
They’re all gonna see you like this. You hate to admit it, but you had just spent your entire commute crying — evident by your raccoon eyes — because you thought everyone (except for Billy) had forgotten your birthday.
Robin and Vicky were already out of the house by the time you woke up. Max, you assumed, got a ride from Steve to their new barista job. Chrissy turned down a pre-shift ‘Hot Girl Walk’, and Eddie never called. It was starting to feel like the most Adult birthday ever, but by a long shot not the worst.
“Put me down!” you persist.
Birthdays suck. Especially when you share one with your abuser. But you’re in a new era now. An era where you are loved, celebrated, and protected.
“SURPRISE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SHY GIRL!”
You’re bombarded by obnoxious kazoos and party hats, streamers and confetti in all shapes and colors, and what looks like a homemade birthday cake in Jane (Mike’s girlfriend)’s hands, decorated with funky, florescent candles, and crafty red hearts that overpowered every inch of the thick white fondant.
“Oh my god,” you beam.
Max, Robin and Vicky. Chrissy, Argyle, Nancy, Jonathan, and Henry. Will, Lucas, Dustin, Mike, Jane, and Erica who also just had a birthday (she turned 18 last week). Steve. Gareth, Jeff, and Grant. All the faces you’ve grown to know and love since moving to Hawkins, all together in one room to celebrate YOU.
“We were trying so hard to keep this a secret,” Steve explains as he gives you a hug. “I’d say we did a pretty good job.”
“Yeah sorry we couldn’t get a better location,” Mike adds. “Chuck E Cheese was fully booked so Hellfire was the next best thing.”
“You guyssss,” you begin to sob. “This is oddly perfect. Thank you.”
“Well,” Jane says. She holds the cake up to your face. “There's no sense in waiting any longer. Make a wish!”
You close your eyes. I wish for life to always be this peaceful.
And when you open your eyes, you see Eddie in front of you, with a beautiful rose bouquet and a bag in his hands.
“Happy birthday, sweetheart.”
His eyes are twinkling like a kid who woke up early on Christmas morning. You greet him with a warm hug to which he uses that opportunity to affectionately rub your back. You hear some soft “aww”s in the background, but you’re too infatuated with the man in front of you to jokingly scorn at whoever said it.
“How’d you know it was my birthday?” you ask him.
“You can find out lot of stuff from paperwork,” Eddie winks at you. “Specifically your resume. Which, might I say, is very impressive.”
“Why, thank you, sir,” you giggle.
You can tell the sir made Eddie’s stomach do somersaults. Completely blushing now, he hands you your gift in the form of a bag, ushering you to open it — right here — in front of everybody.
"You didn't have to..." you mutter quietly.
You take the bag from him.
"Yet… I did," Eddie spews confidently. He watches as you unwrap your gift. “I’d get you strippers but then it’d feel like work. And your bday should never feel like work.”
You nudge him as you roll your eyes. Such a fucking cornball.
But then you become the cornball. A tear begins to form in your eyes when you look at all your gifts. The roses. A custom metalhead Build-A-Bear with a leather jacket and jeans whose certificate reads “Eddie Bear”, and a gold plated charm bracelet from Everlasting Memories with your name engraved on it. But just when you think you had everything, Eddie scoops up the last one from the bottom. It’s a small wooden sign with a message on it.
CAN I BE YOUR BOYFRIEND?
“Oh my god…” is all you can say.
His voice is as gentle as the fingers he uses to patiently graze your arm. "So can I?"
The tear that formed in your eye finally trickles its way down your rosy red cheeks. "Of course you can."
Then you two share a kiss, eliciting an even louder swarm of “aww”s than the ones before, and generating a reaction from nearby, a very curious dancers.
“I hope you know how special you are to each and every one of us,” Eddie says to you. “Especially me, haha.”
You wipe the happy tears away from your eyes.
“It sure feels like it.”
Eddie gives you the day off and you use it to stuff your face and play board games with all your friends. Eventually after the short festivities you stay behind to chill with everyone for a bit. Then you go your own way to start making dinner, which you insisted on, at home.
When you get home, you’re surprised with another text message from Billy.
Billy Hargrove
I’d say the move has helped us a lot. I have room to miss you 🤣
You smile as you answer back.
To be better days ❤️ Happy birthday, brother. I miss you tons.
Billy Hargrove loved “To better days ❤️ Happy birthday, brother. I miss you tons.”
After your convo with Billy, you make your way over to the freezer to grab and defrost the chicken. Tonight’s menu consists of chicken, greens, and potatoes for dinner, followed by some birthday muffins Bob Newby had his bakers make at his coffee shop (courtesy of Max and Steve) for dessert.
Next, you begin to set the table, making sure to make seven settings for tonight: you, Max, Robin, Vicky, one for Eddie, and one for Wayne.
And when you’re finally done, you take a look around your house that you have made a home with your sister and best friends. You’re finally home. Hawkins is home. And for the first time in a really long time, you can truly say you’ve had… a happy birthday.

Okay so I had this really cool idea for a fic. Let it be known right now that I am not good at writing, lord knows I’ve tried 😂
Anyway, ENJOY
Chrissy, Nancy, Robin and Max form a band. To Eddie's surprise.
They are in highschool and there's a talent show. Eddie and Chrissy are friends verging on a relationship, been best friends for a while and flirting and holding hands for ages.
He has been talking about Corroded Coffin performing in the talent show and they've been practicing for weeks. Chrissy after being to so many band practices and admiring the boys play decides she really wants to do something similar, even if it's just a one time thing. She's been trying to catch Eddie's eye and to initiate something that will finally catch his attention and make him see her as she truly wants him too. So, she forms a girl band, and this is what they perform (minus the hatred and the whole ex girlfriend thing in Scott Pilgrim).
She dresses exactly like Envy, and imagine Robin, Nancy and Max are all dressed pretty grungy too. She’s never done anything like this before, it the thought of her mothers face if she saw what she looked like makes her love it even more. She thinks to herself how she’s especially HATE the red strappy heels she’s wearing. Probably call her a slut or a whore. Excellent.
Not only does this catch Eddie's eye but it has Jonathan, Lucas and Vickie basically swooning for their girls up there in utter shock and disbelief.
As soon as they finish and walk backstage, Eddie runs to Chrissy, picks her up, spins her around and simply says "Fuck it" before kissing her, crashing his lips into hers. A kiss that the two have experienced only in dreams. It feels so right, like every part of them fits like a lot piece of a puzzle. They don’t care about the fact that they are stood back stage and there are swarms of people around them. It’s like the world has stopped.
Until they hear a whistle which quietens the entire space.
“JESUS IT WAS ABOUT DAMN TIME” Steve yells with raised hands
“STEVE” Robin says through gritted teeth as she slaps him around the back of the head
“OW! Sorry MOM” Steve says annoyed
The two quickly pull away before bursting into hysterical laughter. Chrissy is kneeling on the floor gasping for air while Eddie is wiping away tears drooped over her, while soon enough everyone else is joining in.
In that moment everything feels right. They are with their friends, they love each other, and they are happy. And for the first time Chrissy feels like, Chrissy. Like she’s beaten the final boss and unlocked the treasure. She feels like Sandy at the end of grease when she wants to show Danny who she really is. Who she can be. And for Eddie? Seeing his face out there when he finally recognised her was the most exhilarating feeling.
“Eddie that felt so amazing! I feel like I could do anything!!”
Eddie picks her up and swings her around leaving her cackling and giggling
“I’m so proud of you sweetheart! You were like a literal GODDESS up there!”
Chrissy blushes and feels the confidence in her about to burst out like lightning
Eddie leans down and whispers in her ear “please tell me you are keeping those?” he says as he points at the dress and shoes
Chrissy laughs playfully “For you? of course”
Eddie bites his lip and pulls Chrissy through a door in the corner that leads to a prop/workshop closet while she sneakily runs in behind him.
Placing Chrissy infront of him, Eddie stands back looking at her like he was looking at the Mona Lisa in the Louvre. Looking her up and down running his hands through his hair, in total disbelief at the sight of her and the fact she kissed him. And he kissed her. Like he needs a moment to take her in.
“Eddie what are you doing? Do I have something on my dress?”
“Mmm nope, just stay exactly how you are. I need to take a mental picture”.
She laughs and slaps him on the shoulder before pulling him down into a passionate, longing kiss. A kiss so full of want and need that she almost moans in desperation.
“Oh so this is how we’re playing it?” Eddie says laughing mid kiss
Chrissy nods “mhmm” and carries on kissing before kicking the door closed.
“Huh, wonder what Romeo and Juliet are up to in there” Steve says wiggling his eyebrows at Robin trying to gross them all out.
“EW STEVE YOU CREEP” Robin yells pushing him and joining the rest of the girls and the guys in disgust.
The rest of the Corroded Coffin Boys, The Freshman and the Girls all look at Steve in disgust before bursting into laughter after hearing a crash from the closet.
“Yeah guys let’s go before we hear something we regret” Nancy says through laughs as she leads them all out with Jonathan.
“Well, whatever happens in there, thank god!”
End. (FOR NOW?)

Part 2 of Billy hates Health
***
"Who THE FUCK put a fucking dildo in my locker ??"
Hargrove's voice is booming in the school hallway. It's between angry and .. what is it, amused ? Why is it fucking amused ?
Billy's turning away from the locker to scan the faces of those who happen to be around. People have heard the question. There are faint gasps and surprised giggles spreading across the hallway. Harrington pretends to be digging in his own locker searching for a book, although he's dying to see Billy's face right now. How pissed is he exactly? Or better yet, how embarrassed ? He can't look now though, not that fast at least, or he'll betray himself right away.
Some guys are gathering around Hargrove to take a look, and Tommy is of course the first one to put his nose inside Billy's locker
He's whistling
"Looks like you got yourself a secret admirer, man."
Carol is snickering and all the guys start laughing and whooping loudly, girls just hiding shocked giggles in their palms.
Steve thinks it's safe to watch the show unfold now. However, he quickly becomes disappointed.
Because that's definitely not the result he wished for.
Hargrove doesn't look embarrassed at all, what the hell. The motherfucker is grinning, like life has just got so much more interesting. He takes out a box with an average-size skin coloured dildo and raises it above his head for everyone to get a better view.
"Oh look, there's a bow wrapped around it!" Carol, Tina, Vicky and other girls are close to being hysterical now
"Didn't know this school had welcome gifts for newcomers. Not bad, Hawkins High, not bad at all."
"Why would anyone .. how would you even use it ..?" Carol's curious, for fuck's sake, Carol is blushing but Hargrove just looks entertained
"You're asking very good questions. Let me just .."
Billy bends and whispers something in Carol's ear while she covers her mouth in utter delight, eyes getting bigger and more illuminated
"Easy, bro!" Tommy is playfully shoving him away
"That's my girlfriend. Hands off." Carol looks intrigued and excited and not like she minds Billy whispering obscenities to her
"Sorry, man. My bad." Hargrove raises his hands in the air as if apologizing. He's still holding the box in one hand and throwing the other one around Tommy's shoulder, talking low so that only he and his significant other can hear him
"Maybe you and Carol can have some fun with that thing? I bet you can't get something like that around Hawkins. Someone must've put real effort into it."
Carol scrunches her nose in eager disgust, and Tommy looks interested but shakes his head, laughing
Billy looks around until his eyes lock with Steve's.
"Yo Harrington! Any idea how it got into my locker, man?"
Steve is shrugging his shoulders, lips curved in a mocking smile
"Nah."
Harrington can see that Billy wants to say some more but restrains himself
"I'll just keep it here in case anyone needs it .. for some fun and games."
There's a teacher turning the corner and walking towards the loud gathering of teens
The crowd disperses, Hargrove bangs his locker closed, people still laughing and joking about the whole thing
Nancy comes back from the bathroom
"What happened here?" She takes Steve by the hand.
"Ugh, nothing. That new guy just wants attention, as always."
"Let's get to class."
"Sure." Steve kisses his girlfriend's cheek.
"You seen it, man? The fucking sex toy??" Tommy is going to talk about it for a week.
Nancy speeds up and Steve has to follow.
Damn it. Fucking damn it! That is not the outcome Steve was hoping to achieve. He wanted to see Hargrove's face turn red, wanted others to make a couple of nasty jokes. It seems he can't really make people dislike Hargrove cause they already love him so much. Even Tommy, his best friend since forever, is not immune to Hargrove's charm. The way Billy was easy about the whole thing, the way he's easy about a lot of things? Breezy and carefree, the way he can laugh anything off, and people will laugh with him. And still there's like an iron wall inside him, that hidden strength, he never caves.
Why is he not ashamed? Why is he not afraid?
What the fuck is his secret? And what the fuck is his problem ??
Steve is not listening to Nancy. He's not listening to the teacher during the class. His mind is busy with more important stuff.
So yeah, it was Harrington. He put a sex toy in Billy's locker. The whole affair needed some preparation, of course. Effort was definitely applied. At the weekend Steve drove to fucking Indianapolis for that. He found a sex shop, put his sunglasses on, got inside, grabbed the first dildo he saw, paid for it in cash and drove back to Hawkins with a wildly beating heart. Then on Monday he stayed late after classes, and picked Hargrove's locker. Looked around inside it. Nothing special, just books. A picture of the ocean waves rolling on the vast sandy beach stuck to the door. Must be California or wherever this asshole is from.
He stuffed the dildo in Hargrove's locker with a bright red bow wrapped around the box. Valentine's Day is too far away. Surprise, bitch, October Valentine's.
No but seriously the motherfucking ass bitch. Why is he so fucking annoying, so annoyingly calm?
So the plan didn't work. Okay. Maybe it was stupid from the beginning. But Steve? Steve would totally be pissed if he found a gift like that. Tommy would launch a whole investigation, sniff out and crucify the joker. All guys would be furious, like .. whatever would they need a dildo for? Is there an implication hidden in there?
But that jackass Hargrove didn't bat an eye. Cool like a cucumber. Yeah it all started with the giant cucumber he had given Harrington during that memorable health class, when Steve felt the underlying agenda, a probable insult like Hargrove was fucking with him.
Hence the dildo. Maybe Billy can stick it up his ass and unwind a bit. Leave Harrington alone.
Shit. It all played out not like Steve wanted it to. A weekend wasted. And he blew off a date with Nancy, for that.
Well, no, wait, wait. Not really. Every failed attempt is an experience, right? Now Steve knows that if he wants to bring that arrogant dick down a notch, no big harm done, he has to strike on a different level. Deeper.
Steve's gonna make him embarrassed. He's gonna make him fucking humble. He might just have come up with another way to do it. Another plan.
He can sense there's something wrong with Hargrove. Something .. something Steve has never come across face to face before, it's in the way he taunts Steve, in the way he looks, no, stares at him. There's a secret, there's a problem, and Steve's gonna take advantage of that.
Why does he want to do it? Steve just hates to be the used to be the most popular guy. Yeah, he's got a girlfriend now, a serious one. Relationship material. Well, maybe too serious, really like .. he likes her, loves her probably, but he's been trying to make her loosen up a bit, you know? Try something different other than sweet and romantic and missionary. Shake her down for some fun. All in vain. Anyways, that's not the point here. So yeah, Steve's in a relationship, and Tommy has told him many times that he's walking a slippery slope of becoming pussy-whipped, but he's still fucking King of Hawkins High and he doesn't want some Californian self-entitled hotshot, the fucking pleb coming to his town and all of a sudden stealing the crown? All girls' eyes are on that ass, drooling to get a ride in the flashy blue car. All guys want to be his best friend. Tommy has been following him around like a bitch on a leash. He's doing good at school, he's superb at basketball.
Stupid fuck.
Harrington is not ready to let go of his title that easily. He still wants to be crowned prom king at the end of school year. He doesn't want to lose to that piece of trash who thinks he's the hottest shit.
Also, you know what, Steve would actually be absolutely fine with this new pain in the ass called Hargrove, if he minded his own business. The thing is, he doesn't. He comes at Steve, he thinks he can take the fucking liberty of making obnoxious remarks, stick his nose into Steve's business, fucking push him around during practice like Harrington's some kind of loser? Hargrove's been doing it since day fucking one, who the hell does he think he is?
Steve's not mean. Well, he's not the meanest, really. He never bites first. The freak Byers? He deserved his camera to be broken. The creep was taking pictures of them, of his girl, in the middle of the night, without them even knowing it. What should Steve have done? Should he have patted him on the shoulder, great photos, man, real artistic shit, wow, do you mind taking a couple while we are actually making love?
Steve only bites when he gets bitten.
There is something else, too.
On top of everything, deep down, he hates the fact that whenever he's lucky enough to have seldom sexy time with Nancy, Hargrove's always somehow at the back of his mind. Fuck knows how and why he got there. But he's there. Every fucking time, and Steve absolutely hates it.
So he sets the new plan in motion.
It's really simple.
Next time they are in the showers, Harrington throws a glance at Billy. Doesn't say anything, throws another one. When Hargrove looks back, Steve averts his eyes. It's a matter of milliseconds.
Next day when they have basketball practice and Hargrove starts his usual dance, Steve pushes him back like he usually does, only gentler. Just a tiny bit, a whiff of less force, but Hargrove notices. It throws him off his game, like an unexpected stumble, and Steve is sensing it, like a hound.
In the showers he looks at him again, a second longer than the previous time.
Confusion is written all over Hargrove's face under his usual asshole expression.
Steve can feel it in his gut that Hargrove, despite being smart, has taken the bait, hook line and sinker.
Maybe, just maybe Steve has an idea what Hargrove's secret is, and he can make it work in his, King Steve's, favour.
Now all he has to do is wait for the right moment, keeping the interest up in the meantime. The moment when Billy slips, gets too greedy, and takes a big bite, Steve will hook him fast and reel him in.
Watch him choke on it.
Not for everyone's amusement, but exclusively for his own.
He will make this asshole humbled.

People who shit r*nance are always mad when I bring up Steve, saying a lesbian relationship shouldn't revolve around a man's feelings. But they clearly don't see how important he is to Robin, his position absolutely matters in that instant. You can ship it, you can write fics but having all of them just be okay and supportive is A boring and B not realistic. Nancy was Steve's first love, he's still hung up on her, every relationship he seeks out with other girls he automatically compares them to the one he had with Nancy. He's still questioning the what ifs, imagine your bff just swoops in and dates the girl you have feelings for??
I already disliked that Robin was pushing for Nancy and Steve to get together because realistically she should have known how it ended. Which also shows that Steve still doesn't know Nancy and Jonathan slept together while they were dating and he still sees himself as the primarily reason why that relationship failed.
But if he would know about the cheating he wouldn't let Robin get together with Nancy, not if she could hurt her like she did with him. There would be so many conflicting feelings from both sides and in the end Robin would choose Steve, her soulmate over some girl.
Also I hate how the people who ship r*nance completely villianise Vickie or just erase her from the narrative. Like she's an openly bi character who is clearly interested in Robin and vice versa. People don't give her a chance and I'm so sad about it. (Screams like bi phobia to me but I digress. Also it wouldn't happen if this was a gay ship because people create entire background stories for Garret who had even less screentime to pair him up with Will)
i honestly don’t understand shipping r//nance anyway, but especially when it’s only the most boring iteration where no one involved actually seems to experience human feelings, and they’re all just the flattest versions of the characters possible. and yeah, the reason why steve’s relationships with these girls are failing is because he still isn’t over his relationship with nancy, and robin knows that. it would be insanely heartless for robin to attempt to date nancy knowing that. but, even if steve was totally over nancy i’d still find it wrong.
yeah, i don’t love that robin pushed steve and nancy back together and i agree that i think it shows steve doesn’t know nancy cheated. like we hear in his speech to nancy that he wholly blames himself for their relationship, and he still thinks that had he been better, they may still have been together.
if steve knew about the cheating, well. we see how he reacts in s1. steve has a history with cheating and it causes him to blow up and overreact. though i don’t think s2 steve would act like s1 steve (because he’s completely in love with nancy by s2) i think if steve had known about the cheating, his convo with nancy would not nearly be as calm, and i definitely think he would never want robin to get involved in that.
robin would choose steve over nancy every single time. he’s her soulmate, her best friend. i think it’s because we live in such a romantic centric society that people think robin would choose her love life over steve, but that’s totally incomprehensible to me, and would never happen. robin and steve are each others number one priority.
the way a lot of r//nance shipper treats vickie honestly makes me sick, and i agree that a lot of it does scream biphobia. like, we have a perfect couple right there! they like each other, they both ramble (which puts robin at total ease because it’s something she’s anxious about), and at the end of the world, they’re able to make each other laugh and have fun. (and yeah, the gareth thing is really weird to me too. like i’m not gonna shit on anyone’s parade, but why do people want this random junior with will?)

Oh god I every time I hear about the Fruity Four or Spicy Six I fucking cringe like those people would not hang out together at all. Like obviously Stobin are bffs, maybe Eddie would hang out with them but I honestly don't see it that much. He has his DnD friends and his band but he could be friends with Stobin. I don't see him hang out with Nancy because honestly she would find him too annoying after some time. Same with Jonathan he's judging Eddie too much but Argyle I think they would be besties lol.
Now the rest Jancy wouldn't want to hang out with Steve, bc of shared negative history and Steve would hate seeing Jancy in action because he's still hurt. Robin would be in solidarity with Steve because that's her bestie and she has like no desire to hang with people who hurt him (and talk bad about him like it's insinuated at the end of s4). And Argyle is Jonathan's bestie, I doubt he wants to hang with Steve, I mean I honestly don't know what he would do if he would know about Jancy and the cheating so I can see him be civil towards Steve. And I think him and Robin could vibe well together. Idk if Argyle would like Nancy or if she could tolerate him, it's just he could be too immature for her like he's not smart enough for her so she keeps getting annoyed, like Nancy has a short fuse that's why I question everyone who thinks she could handle Robin's quirks over time. Honestly I see Argyle vibing with everyone but Nancy.
In general I also don't see Jancy making an effort to stay in touch or become closer to people. Jonathan especially is a certified loner, he judges people a lot and likes to keep to himself. Nancy idk I see her wanting to leave asap and never look back.
I think the main friend groups out of the teens would be Stobin plus Eddie, Argyle and Eddie, Jancy, Jonathan and Argyle, maybe Robin and Nancy but Nancy has to make the effort. And ofc Stobin and Vickie, who is always left out. Like Steve and her have so many shared interests, so they both annoy Robin with it, and all three would always hang out together.
honestly the spicy six and the fruity four are such weird names honestly especially when robin is the only canonical lesbian like none of the others are actually conically gay/queer. like why are we giving these names to characters that are only headcanoned to be gay like please but yeah all of these people would not be hanging out. yeah like stobin is hanging out but like the others are not even that close besides like jancy and jonathan and argyle like after that none of these characters are really close to each other! lol yeah about everything you said about who would hang out with each other
yeah steve canonically has facial and body reactions to seeing nancy also jancy doesn’t even care about steve that much. like them being surprised that steve’s changed shows that they still think the worst about steve which makes jackshit sense but anyway they still don’t even like steve that much - why would they want to hang out with steve? but yeah robin also really wouldn’t want to hang out with jancy cuz she knows how steve feels also i don’t see robin and jonathan being friends at all. omg everything you said about argyle vibing with everyone but nancy! also nancy just has this uptight personality that would end up with argyle just being frustrated and they would but heads a lot.
SAME!! to me there’s no reason why jancy stays in touch with any of these people cuz they haven’t really made an effort either to make friends with them! it’s just the end of the world shit which is fine but they have not once made an actual connection with one of the other teens (except for with jonathan and argyle) without the ud being the reason why. hell the reason jancy even starts talking in the first place in because of ud shit! oh nancy would absolutely want to leave and never come back!
EVEYTHING IN THIS LAST PARAGRAPH! i love it 💜💜. especially about that last part with stobin and vickie like i love this dynamic so much and i wished it got more love

This is hilarious. People who have never even watched the show before have picked up that Mike is in love with Will based off of photos of them together. A lot of Bylers have tested this out. They show people they know who have never watched the show a photo of Byler and ask which one they think is canonically in love. Without fail every one of them says Mike and is shocked to learn it’s Will. And they all say that there is no way that Mike isn’t in love with Will. It’s that obvious.
It’s also obvious that Mike lied to El in his monologue. So using that as proof he is canonically in love with her isn’t it. Even Milevens hate the monologue. Several of them hoped El didn’t hear Mike, it was that bad. They also didn’t talk about it afterwards which speaks volumes.
Byler and Ronance are not the same. One is the main ship and heart of the show. The other is pure fanon. Nancy is in love with Jon and Robin clearly ends up with Vickie.
No hate to Ronance btw. I have no problems with it and think it can be pretty cute. But Ronance =/= Byler.
Just for your information, Mike has never show any feelings for Will neither.
He canonically has feelings only for El.
And yet, all of you Bylers like to pretend he has, just for some little details, looks or gestures he did towards him.
Why you can do that with them, but the moment we do that with Nancy, who also showed some ambigous looks towards Robin, and Robin showed some towards her as well, then it becomes a problem?
Why are you Bylers the only ones who gets to be delulu?
The reality is that, if Nancy and Robin don't have canonical feelings towards each other, then neither Mike has towards Will.
Neither of our ships will never be canon, unfortunately.
So it's useless that you act like a superior one.
We all already lost.
(Also, how exactly tagging Stonathan would have helped you not being attacked?)
..is this the same anon?

Robin Buckley x Nancy Wheeler (first kiss, the fruity four, Eddie/Chrissy pairing even though it’s not the focus, Steve is perfect as always, flirting, angst/fluff, feelings revelations)
Summary: Robin has feelings for Nancy, ruh-roh
Robin was in trouble.
She’d been spending time with Vickie these last few weeks, and it had been great. Vickie matched her energy, always rambling along with her. They were giggly, they were nervous, they were cute.
Cute.
Vickie was great. In typical lesbian fashion, neither of them were willing to say anything about the tension between them. It was a never ending stream of longing glances, the phrase “I really like spending time with you,” and pinkies brushing together. It was everything Robin had ever wanted, really.
She talked about Vickie incessantly, recapping very interaction with Steve, who listened intently about 50% of the time. He was a great friend, but Robin talked a LOT, and it wasn’t always productive or interesting.
“But you haven’t kissed yet.” Steve would always sigh, once Robin had finished recounting her day.
“No.” Robin responded, frustrated.
“Dude, just do it already!” Eddie’s voice bellowed from the living room. He was lounging on the couch, high out of his mind. Robin turned to Chrissy, who returned her gaze with understanding.
“Can you handle your boyfriend, please?” Robin pleaded with annoyance. Chrissy nodded, grabbing two beers from the fridge and joining Eddie on the couch. “See? It’s easy!” Eddie declared, pulling Chrissy towards him and kissing her dramatically on the lips. Robin, Steve, and Nancy groaned in unison. Chrissy laughed and pulled away, blushing.
“Eddie!” She exclaimed. She was never one for PDA, because she knew it made her friends uncomfortable. She didn’t mind it, but kept it to a minimum. Eddie, however? He loved it. He wanted everybody and their mother to know he was dating the most beautiful woman in Hawkins.
“Robin, do you want to kiss Vicki?” Nancy asked, ever sensible.
“I, uh - Y-yeah, of course I do.” Robin responded. But that was the issue, the reason Robin was in trouble.
Because Vicki was perfect, and all signs pointed to Vickie and Robin being happy together. There just was one problem - Robin couldn’t stop thinking about Nancy.
It was just Robin’s luck to have feelings for a straight woman. She tried to repress them, but any time Nancy was in the room, Robin felt her heart beat faster.
Nancy was beautiful, smart, tough, snarky. Nancy kept up with Robin while keeping her grounded. Nancy usually knew what was going on with Robin before Robin knew it herself - except for this, of course.
Nancy was Steve’s ex-girlfriend. Steve. Best Friend Steve. Platonic soulmate Steve Harrington, who’d been in love with Nancy Wheeler since junior year. He’s said he was over her, but people say things they don’t mean all the time.
Like when Robin said she wanted to kiss Vickie. It wasn’t a total lie, it’s just that Robin hadn’t kissed anyone before - boy or girl. Robin hated that she wanted her first kiss to be special. Eddie had teased her that her first kiss was supposed to be awful and awkward, and not to worry about it, but she did anyway. Kissing Vickie could be nice, but it wouldn’t be fair. Vickie didn’t deserve that.
Steve continued to cook dinner, a weekly tradition. He’d gotten really good at feeding people since Dustin and co would always bug him about being hungry. But Thursdays were for the older folks - Robin, Nancy, Chrissy, Eddie, and Steve.
Nancy left, excusing herself to go work on homework in the living room. Robin bit her lip, knowing that she HAD to say something, she HAD to. Otherwise, she’d go crazy.
“Steve, can I talk to you?” Robin said, quietly. She looked behind her at the others. They were a distance away from the kitchen, but could probably still hear her if they listened closely. “Um, privately?” Steve looked confused at first, but then shrugged and nodded. He put the knife he was chopping vegetables with down and followed her to the guest room down the hall.
“What’s up?” Steve asked her, leaving the door ajar behind him a few inches. Steve had just grown hesitant to closing/locking doors since shit went down in Hawkins, because he never wanted even a little delay if somebody needed him.
The moment they were alone, in a quiet room, Robin realized there was no turning back. She actually was about to have this conversation. The big one. The one that would change everything, for better or for worse. Probably worse. Oh god, what did I do? Stupid, Robin. Stupid.
In the living room, Nancy was finding it difficult to study with the music blaring. Eddie and Chrissy were also being all couply and gross, and Nancy was not too keen on seeing that.
Nancy respected people’s privacy, for the most part. She was a journalist at heart, after all. And Robin had just pulled Steve into the guest room. She was confused at what Steve could know that Nancy couldn’t. Steve had known Robin longer, but Nancy liked to think that she and Robin had really bonded recently.
She decided she would go to the bathroom, which just so happened to be right across from where Robin and Steve were talking. She wouldn’t snoop, of course not, but if she happened to hear something as she walked past, that wasn’t unethical, right?
Yeah, Nancy didn’t really believe it either. But she went anyway, and then she heard her name, and curiosity got the best of her.
She listened through the door.
“Nancy? Really?” Steve said, a calm response to Robin’s bumbling mess.
“Please don’t hate me, Steve. It’s not like anything is gonna happen, I just -”
“Why would I hate you?” Steve asked, confused. Robin looked at him as if it were a dumb question. “I told you, it’s not like that between us anymore. Does she know about this?” Steve asked.
“No, of course not. I don’t even know why this is happening to me.” Robin sputtered.
“I think I of all people can understand why you’d have a crush on Nancy.” Steve argued. His tone was still even, and the lack of anger was surprising to Robin.
“Why aren’t you, like, freaking out right now?”
“Because only one of us can freak out at a time, remember?” Steve recalled, reflecting on a conversation they’d had before. Usually, Robin was the one freaking out, but in a few key moments she was there to step up and be the strong one for Steve.
“Right. So, yeah. That’s kinda why I haven’t kissed Vickie yet. Do you think I should?”
“I think you should talk to Nance.” Steve suggested.
“What?! About this? No! Why?” Robin wondered, panicking at the thought.
“Because I actually think you guys could be really great together.” Steve explained. Robin blinked at him, waiting for the punchline that never came. Steve was actually supporting this. He continued, providing more reasons he considered all this a good idea. “She’s single now, and a very open minded person, and one of your best friends-”
“She’s straight, Steve.” Robin muttered, hopeless.
Nancy couldn’t help herself. The door opened with a creak, jolting Robin and Steve from their conversation.
“How long have you been there?” Robin asked with wide eyes. Oh shit oh shit oh shit.
“Bye, Steve.” Nancy teased, smiling sweetly. Steve chuckled and left the room.
“Nancy, I-”
“You shouldn’t be assuming someone is straight, you know.” Nancy lectured. “Like, yeah, I thought I was, but I’ve thought a lot of things and been proven wrong later.”
“Proven…wrong?” Robin swallowed. She couldn’t possibly be hearing these words correctly.
“Yeah. If I was straight, I don’t think I’d be nearly as invested in your relationship with Vickie. Like, every time you tell us you haven’t kissed yet, I’m…relieved.” Nancy exhaled, surprised she’s actually saying these words out loud. She was irritated by Robin when they first met because she thought Steve was dating this beautiful woman and that made Nancy jealous. Now, Robin was with Vickie, or about to be with Vickie, and that irritated Nancy too. Nancy had no idea that hearing Robin’s confession would make it all make sense. Now that she knew what was happening, she knew how to handle it.
“I…” Robin’s mouth hung open in shock. This was a dream. This had to be a dream.
Nancy found herself looking at Robin’s lips. They looked soft and full. Maybe it was time to find out for sure.
Steve had walked back out to the kitchen to finish cooking. Nancy had actually confided in him that she was questioning her sexuality about two weeks prior, so he was grateful to not have to harbor that secret anymore, especially from Robin. It’s also how he had the time to process everything, and to get used to the idea of Robin and Nancy potentially being together. It was a little weird, at first, but now? He just wanted his friends to be happy.
At first, Eddie and Chrissy were too distracted with each other to notice that Robin and Nancy were missing, but once Eddie’s eyes closed in on Steve, alone in the kitchen, he pieced it together.
“Where’d they go?” Eddie asked.
“Guest room.” Steve replied, trying to hide the smirk on his face.
“No way…” Eddie processed.
“I told you!” Chrissy cheered, grinning from ear to ear.
“I’ll believe it when I see it, sweetheart.”
Nancy walked back out to the room first, a triumphant look on her face. Robin followed a few moments later, dazed. And then, Eddie saw it. The confirmation.
Nancy wiped a smudge of lipstick from below her mouth.
Nancy sat down again, resuming her homework. Robin stumbled back into the kitchen with Steve. Steve shook his head, smiling to himself.
Eddie rolled his eyes, dove into his pocket, and handed ten dollars to Chrissy.

Supernatural Creature AU
“Can you tell him to stop?”
Robin hates it when Eddie wakes shows up at the apartment, hovers just outside their balcony window pulling a Salem’s Lot and if they weren’t in the part of town that was full of supes he’d had given someone a stroke by now-he almost did. Henrietta an old bridge troll is about a few hundred years old and prone to getting spooked by just about everything these days and when she saw Eddie though her own window across the street he waved and she had fallen in a scream on her behind. She reminds Robin about this daily when Robin is on her way to work. Anyway, it’s three thirty and Eddie is at her balcony…singing.
“Steve! Billy! Chrissy! GET. YOUR. MAN.”
But wait…
Shit, they aren’t home. Robin could kick herself for saying no to the invitation this months moon run but Robin can only run so far and so fast and honestly, if you’re not the one mated and dating a werewolf then is it really worth it? She hates it when Billy and Chrissy and the stupid flea ridden werewolves in Hawkins converge together and howl and hunt, it’s annoying to try and keep up and being reminded that…no no, little witch you can’t use magic you can’t use your broom.
Last month Billy had hunted them down and had tackled Chrissy into a rather large bush and when Robin had come upon that…well, lets just say that if she wasn’t a lesbian before she certainly was one after seeing Billy’s wolfed out junk and then seeing Steve dive bomb on the wolfy love fest.
‘You sure Robin? I think Nancy’s going this year.’
‘Oh yeah, because I want to see her chase after Byers…again. No thanks you guys have fun.’
She had forgotten that Eddie couldn’t go, forgot about Eddie all together. Of course he wouldn’t be permitted by the packs in Hawkins and, as it was, the werewolves and the other blood suckers were still trying to understand how Eddie had found himself mated and bedded and in love with two werewolves and a witch. Well, the witch part is more understandable, she thinks.
We do certainly get around, ha.
Theres singing, Robin can hear, singing with a bit of a slur to it like maybe Eddie’s drunk and she prays to everything that she’s wrong because a drunk Eddie is an even more annoying Eddie, a drunk Eddie is a hugger and unless you’re a beautiful woman or Steve then Robin would rather avoid hugging all together. She tries not to think about Vickie and her it’s not you it’s me, speech.
‘I wish it could work but you know, you’re going places, high places Robin.’
‘So are you!’
‘I mean literally, Robin. You’re literally always flying everywhere and you’re up so high and you can do all of these things and I just…I can’t. I’m just a squishy little normal human person. I really really like you but what happens when I start getting all wrinkled and old.’
‘I’ve told you theres a spell for that.’
‘That’s the problem I don’t want a spell I want a normal girlfriend who can grow old at the same time as me not infinitely slower.’
Vickie had hugged her and walked out of The Cheeky Whispers and Brew and hadn’t been back on Robin’s side of town since, though she did hear that Vickie was seen with some meat headed human jock who happened to very innocently get jock itch. Out of nowhere. Somehow.
‘Eh, I just sped up the process I bet the guy doesn’t even wash his ass because he thinks it’s gay.’ Steve said offhandedly as he handing Robin a root beer float.
“~if you like pina coladas~”
“Oh hell no.” Robin yanks the curtains opened so quickly that Eddie crashes into the balcony bellow. A cat screeches, a woman screams and Eddie, bashfully rises up with one hand behind his head as Robin watches him, annoyed. “Idiot.”
-
“You DRANK Vickie’s boyfriend?”
Robin stands corrected, Eddie isn’t an idiot he is a genius, a wonderful man, an excellent vampire, she says this as she tosses the blood bag into her microwave. “Did you kill him?”
“Don’t sound too concerned. I didn’t drain him I nibbled and the guy was so damn drunk off of his ass I couldn’t fly straight.” Eddie smiles dopey, still buzzed. “I don’t know how that human was able to stand up straight. Couldn’t see me for shit and thanked me for the hickey before he literally fell into a ditch.”
“Oh shit.” The timer goes off and Robin tosses the blood bag to Eddie. “You think he died?”
“I don’t kill humans so no and I’m starting to get a little,” He gestures at all of her. “bit of a murder kink out of you. Can I get a mug?”
“Do you want a mug? Steve’s not here and I wont tattle if you drink straight from the pouch.”
She does mind when he uses one of the metal straw to stab into the plastic and starts slurping up the blood like a Caprisun though. “You can keep the straw.”
“Okay.”
Gonna add onto this. I kinda like the idea of Robin and Eddie hanging out oh and Eddie being a vampire is pretty awesome too.

What r ur thoughts on Stranger Things Vol2? A lot of people hated it but I personally thought it was alright, like def a lil underwhelming since how much they hyped it up
Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2 Review + Fix-It Fic
Review: I finished watching both episodes of Volume 2 the day it came out, and I have some thoughts. I really liked it as a Stranger Things fan but as a general TV fan, I had some problems. I, of course, enjoyed getting to see my favorite characters triumph over the challenges they endured in volume 1 and seeing the relationships between them blossom. I especially enjoyed getting to see more of Dustin and Eddie and of Robin and Steve.
One of my least favorite things was how they handled Will. Will has definitely had a rough go of it since the show began. As someone who relates to people maturing before you, some parts were hard to watch. I hated seeing Mike repeatedly choose El over Will straight to Will's face. I love Mike and El's relationship but I hate the way all of this has been handled. Especially the way that Will's painting was used to bring Mike and El together. The only scene that was "good" for Will was his talk with Jonathan while they were preparing El's tank. The entire rest of the season, Will is ignored and neglected.
Eddie's death was also a large point I had a problem with. It wasn't so much the death itself, but everything else. Ultimately, his death felt useless, the bats were already distracted and he lost his life for a feat that had already been accomplished. His death was also barely acknowledged. The only person who seemed to care was Dustin despite Eddie having other friends. I also just hate the formula of ST introducing a new, lovable character just to kill them in the same season. It's a low blow and nothing else.
I also disliked the relationships this season. This isn't me saying I was pushing for any other ship but I just, again, didn't like how they were handled. Stancy really felt like it was being forced and Steve's confession was just strange. In the end, Nancy and Jonathan still being together just didn't click for me. They have had a lot of problems in the past and they never really resolved the ones they had this season. Robin and Vickie gave me whiplash as well. First, we have those clues that Vickie is into women, then she has a boyfriend so, even if she was into women, definitely wasn't flirting with Robin, and then their final scene all definitely threw me for a loop.
I'd love to hear what y'all thought in the comments. Feel free to agree or dispute.

Don't Do This Alone (Eddie Munson)

As Eddie looked into the Gate, looking at Dustin waiting for him to come through, the sounds of the bats berated his ears from outside. He glanced back at the door and then back to Dustin.
“I-I can’t,” he said sadly. “Someone needs to stay, to distract the bats, and no way in hell I’m making either of you do it.” He looked between you and Dustin. You looked at Eddie with a shocked sadness.
“What, no! Eddie, don’t,” you pleaded, grabbing a hold of his jacket sleeve.
“Come on guys!” Dustin shouted from the other side of the portal. “Get out of there, come on!” You looked up to Dustin and then back to Eddie, a desperate look in your eye. Eddie brought up his hand and stroked your face with his thumb. “I have to stay,” he sighed.
“Then I’m staying too,” you said resolutely. This caught Eddie off guard.
“What, no. Y/N, you have to go through, let me do this,” Eddie said, concern in his face and voice.
“Come on!” Dustin shouted again.
“Give me a minute, Henderson!” You shouted back at him. You turned back to Eddie.
“Either we do it together, Munson, or we don’t do it all,” you said sternly, issuing your ultimatum.
Eddie looked conflicted for a moment before nodding, indicating you could stay. You nodded back to him.
You turned back to the gate.
“You go on ahead, Henderson. Me and Eddie still got some work to do,” you shouted, cupping your hands around your mouth to amplify your voice. Dustin looked frustrated, but trusted your judgement. When you looked back to Eddie, you saw him staring at you, multiple emotions written across his face.
“We doin’ this or what,” you said with a half smile. Eddie looked to the door behind him and then back at you.
“Let’s do this, L/N,” he said with determination, holding out his hand. You nodded, grabbed his hand, and the two of you practically ran through the door to the outside.
Outside, the bats covered the red sky like a menacing cloud. Their cries and screeches hurt your ears as you listened. You and Eddie bared your weapons as you walked into the cloud. The animals cried out as they swarmed. The bats flew down from the sky but Eddie deflected them with his garbage lid shield. In your hands was a spear that you swung wildly when any bat came close. Just as you and Eddie had hoped, the bats centered around you, none flying off.
You and Eddie stood back to back as you defended yourselves. While watching the bats in front of you, you also kept a close eye on Eddie. You were not going to lose him here. As you looked forward, one bat charged towards you. You swung your spear but it dodged and flew around you. Instead of rejoining the other creatures, the bat flew around to Eddie and latched onto his arm with it’s teeth. Eddie cried out in pain as the bat bit into him.
You quickly turned around, grabbed the bat, and used your spear to separate its head from it’s body. Without the body, the head went limp and released Eddie’s arm. Eddie looked to you before going back to the bats. He swung with his shield, deflecting and impaling some of the bats. You swung your weapon, hitting what you could. More bats began to fly down from the cloud, beginning to overpower you.
“Eddie!” You shouted through the cacophony of noise. “It’s getting too much, we need to retreat!”
“But we need to distract them,” Eddie yelled back, continuing to brandish his shield.
“They have been distracted. Do you really think the others are incompentent enough to not have done anything with the time we’ve given them? We’ve done enough!” Your shouts must have broken though to Eddie as he looked at you with an understanding look.
“Alright, but how do we get out?” He asked, surveying the angry bats surrounding the two of you.
“We do what we do best, baby,” you laughed. “We run.”
With that, you and Eddie ran as fast as you could out of the cloud towards the trailer. You covered your faces as you ran through the storm of creatures. Your hand held Eddie’s the whole time as you ran, making sure he wouldn’t be left behind. Once you had escaped the cloud, you turned back to see a mostly unharmed Eddie behind you. You then turned back around to face the rapidly approaching trailer. You held out your arm, ready to grab the handle to open it.
Once it was in your hand, you wrenched it open and practically threw Eddie inside. You quickly closed the door behind you. One bat had managed to get in, but you quickly ended it with your spear. Eddie looked at you with wide eyes, shock and love written across his face. You walked over to him, laying your spear down on the ground as you did.
“You ok?” You asked, looking down at the wound on Eddie’s arm.
“I’ll live,” he chuckled, brushing over it with his fingers.
“I hope so,” you smiled. “Now get your cute butt through that gate, Munson.”

Love On-Set (Pt. 01 of 10)
Pairing: Dacre Montgomery X Reader
Word count: 3K
Next part (02) ->
Summary: You knew acting on Stranger Things season 3 would be a challenge, and you also knew, from the start, you'd have to work closely with Dacre Montgomery. But is wasn't a big deal for you, since this is your job and you're determined to act professionally. You had it all figured out, or so you thought, until the moment you were out face to face with Dacre. Then, this job became a lot harder than it was supposed to be, since you can't seem to focus whenever you're around Dacre. And you'll have to be around him a lot until the end of production.

×
First Sight
The minivan stops right before entering the set as the driver speaks with one of the security guards. A huge structure was built around the area, and if it wasn't for the strong lights, you'd be in complete darkness. It's late at night, but yet, there are some journalists and a lot of cameras. They immediately surround the car, trying to see who's inside.
“Vicki, do you think I should go out and talk to them?” You decide to ask her first, because you're not as known as the other actors, and you're not sure if they'd want to talk to you.
“Sure. But don't take long.” She nods, touching the drive's shoulder and telling him to wait.
Taking a deep breath, you push the door open, a smile on your face as the cameras quickly find you. Running a hand through your hair, to make sure it's not messed up, you take in all the microphones and smartphones pointed at your face.
“(Y/N), could you answer some questions?” A short, dark-haired guy asks, a camera flashing.
“It depends on the question, but I'll try my best.” This seems to please them, and you wonder if the others couldn't afford a few minutes.
“Your posted on your Instagram account that you were a Stranger Things fan from season one.” A woman asks. “How was the transition from being a fan to acting on the show?”
“It was fantastic.” The first season of the show was still driving people crazy when you got the call for an audition for the role of Amy Whitehall, for seasons two and three. Vicky, you have no idea how, got in touch with some friends when she heard they were searching of someone with physical traits similar to yours. Thankfully, the audition went well and you got the job. “It's an honor to be part of this masterpiece. The only bad part is that now I have some spoilers.”
“Your character's scene by the end of season two had any interaction with Billy Hargrove, Hawking's bad boy. Does that mean she'll be in any kind of relationship with him?”
For that, you have to think, careful not to say anything that will expose the plot.
People are very interested in Billy, not sure exactly where the character will go from now on, after his introduction on season two. He stole many hearts, for love or hate, dividing opinions. And your character had a short appearance by very end of the last episode, shown in an interaction with him. On her way to the ball, to help Nancy, Billy almost runs her over with his car, after dropping his sister. They had a small dialogue, him asking her to get out of the way and her telling him to look where he was going. Then a pause, a little bit of tension, and that was it.
“I'm not allowed to answer that, but Amy's scene was just an introduction. Her character will be around throughout season three.” Offering another smile, you turn around, giving attention to someone else.
“What will be a new threat? The season finale raised a lot of questions about–”
“Excuse me, excuse me.” Vicky pokes her head out, a hand raised. “I'm sorry, but we have to get going.”
“Aright.” You mumble. “Thank you, guys. Bye.” Politely, you wave at the reporters before going back into the van.
You're soon moving again, leaving the entrance behind and driving in darkness for some minutes before more lights come into your sight until they're all around you. The set was built around a piece of the road, where you already shot earlier this week.
“C'mon, (Y/N). Hair and make-up." Vicky urgers, stepping out of the van with you.
You easily find your way around the set, chatting with people as they do your hair and put the makeup on. There will be a tiny cut above your left eyebrow, and Ron, the guy who always take care of the fake wounds around here, takes only fifteen minutes to get it done. Once you're ready, Vicky guides you to the filming area, and you sit on your chair a few feet away, under one of the many huge tents scattered around the place.
“Hi.” Someone says, and you abruptly look up from your phone, finding your co-star. The only co-star of the day, Dacre. He's already full Billy, with the mullet wig and the leather jacket. “I didn't mean to startle you. Just thought I'd come to say hello before the scene.”
You haven't properly spoken to Dacre. The single scene you made was quick, one of the last, and the set was a mess. So you didn't have the chance to talk, and ever since, you haven't crossed paths with him. But today's scene is all about your characters. Amy's first appearance on season three will have her running from something in the woods, the Mind Flayer, and she crashes her car on Billy's, while he's on the way to meet Mrs. Wheeler. That's it for today, their first meeting.
“Hi.” Smiling back, you shake his hand. “I'm (Y/N).” You decide to remind him.
“I know.” He simply says. “Do you want to go over the lines before the real thing?”
He has such a nice voice, it's impressive. You've watched some of his movies, and he's really good. It's not like you haven't acted before, but nothing so important or famous as Stranger Things. You can't help but be a little nervous. “Sure.” Blocking your phone, you stand up, leaving it on your seat.
“Alright. Let's–”
“(Y/N)! Dacre! It's time, c'mon!” The director calls, cutting you off.
“Guess we'll go straight to the real thing,” Dacre says as you start making your way to where the cars are positioned.
Billy's Camaro and Amy's light green Toyota are placed a few inches apart, the front part already wrecked and a light smoke coming off from under the hood.
“The mechanism will push the cars on each other and the rest you already know.” Your stylist comes to check on you one last time, making sure everything is perfect. When she steps away, you get inside the car.
A few days ago you shot Amy's way over here, driving insanely fast, running from the shadows creeping. Most of the scenes where Amy will be alone were already made since there weren't many. She will be around the others a lot, as the events are unrevealed.
Once you're in the car, you take your time to get into character, ignoring the orders being yelled outside. The lights are turned off, and the road before you is almost completely dark.
“Let's get it started, everyone!” The director shouts. “Action!”
At his command, the car jerks forward.
Letting your head fall on the wheel, you breathe fast, wide eyes acknowledging what just happened, the crash, the smoke, the other car that collided with yours. Looking over your shoulder, you imagine, you picture it coming, moving through the threes, growing closer.
“What the hell!” The voice yells as you try to make your car start again, uselessly. “You could've killed me!”
“Damn it.” Cursing under your breath, overcome by terror, you step out of the car, running around it and into the other one, which is still working, opening the passenger door and rushing inside.
“What do you think you're doing? Get the hell out of my car!” Dacre shouts at your face, in Billy's voice, a little deeper.
“There's something in the woods!” You yell, looking through the rear windshield. “It's coming!”
“Are you crazy or something?! You almost wrecked my car!” As he speaks, you imagine it once again, the tentacles coming from the sky, taking over the road behind you.
Then you grab his arm, squeezing the muscle underneath the jacket. He's in the middle of a sentence when he looks back too, immediately going silent as he's eyes meet the same inexistent thing you're seeing.
“What the–”
“Drive!” You burst out, and the car starts moving.
“Cut!” The director's voice reaches both of you and Dacre hits the brakes.
Relaxing, you let go of his arm.
“That was great, but I want another take. Ryan, turn those lights down.”
The scene is repeated three more times, with different lighting until they finally decide it's perfect. Then the whole set starts moving to the next scene, which is the sequence to what just played out. It'll be shot in a street Northeast from the road, and since it'll play out from the Camaro, you're told to stay in the car as Dacre drives there, following the other cars.
“You did well back there,” Dacre says as you move, taking a different turn from the other cars to reach your mark. The street has a few small houses on one side, which will have their lights on and some people moving inside and on their balconies, and tall threes on the other.
“You too. Hope I didn't hurt your arm, but Amy was terrified.” Shrugging your shoulders, you smile to hear his giggle.
“I noticed.” He says. “But my arm will survive.”
Looking his way, you're able to have a good look at him now. It's a little dark, but you can take in his features. Dacre makes the mullet look good, which is impressive since you absolutely hate the hairstyle. But not on him. Clearing your throat, you look away. “Make sure it will. You'll need it.”
Dacre stops by the mark, everyone apparently already on their positions. “Things are about to get tense for Billy and Amy now.”
“First fight.” You say, taking a look at your outfit to make sure nothing is out of place. “Enemies to lovers is quite a good arch.”
“I like it too.”
“(Y/N). Dacre. Are you ready?” The director asks and both of you give him a thumbs up, hands off the window. The crew with the microphones and cameras are already positioned, ready for the scene. “Alright then. Ready... Action!”
Dacre moves the car forward, just enough to fake it as he hits the breaks. “What was that?” Billy asks, annoyed for some reason Amy wouldn't know.
“I don't know.” With a hand on your hair, shaking a little, you breathe fast, terrified. “Just take me home.”
“Now I gotta drive you home too?”
“Screw you.” The sudden outburst and the disgust in his voice makes you bolt out of the car, keeping in mind not to look at the cameras following you.
“Are you going to walk?” Billy yells, but you don't look back, walking fast, crossing your arms. “Wait.”
“Screw. You.”
“Don't be an idiot.” You roll your eyes when you notice he's coming closer. Dacre grabs your arm, forcing you to turn around. “Are you really going to walk home with that... Thing out there?”
You're confused at his change of moods, pushing your arm away. “Does it look like I have a choice? You just saw that–” You gesture at the threes on the other side of the road. “–and you still couldn't bring yourself to drive a lady home. You're such a gentleman.” Raising your voice, you put the same tone of disgust in your voice that you heard in his. The cameras move a little closer, and you know why. That's when the tension starts, when Amy stands up to Billy. Stepping forward, lifting your head to try and look him in the eye, you put a single finger in his chest. “You're far worse than what people say you are.” You don't get why his eyes make you nervous. Maybe this whole thing is more than you're used to, too big of a production for you after a few years away from the cameras. As much as Dacre's face being so close makes you feel funny, you gotta keep it cool, don't let it show. You're scared, terrified of a monster in the woods.
“Cut the bullshit and let's go.” He takes your arm again, but you refuse to follow him, standing your ground.
“Let go!” You struggle a bit on his grip, noticing how you actually need to act as if it's tighter than it really is. When he turns to face you again, as you struggle, his face comes close again, his eyes filled with Billy's annoyance.
“Get your butt–” Exactly in time, a crack reaches your ears, and both you and Dacre look at the woods with wide eyes, your breaths caught in your throats, unsure of what made that noise, but not excited to find out. “Let's get out of here.”
“Yeah.” You mumble, heading back into the car.
“And cut!” The director yells as soon as you close the door shut. “That was good, but I want another take. I want the same tension you both built on season 2, only now it's stronger, you're face to face. And Dacre, work this out because people need to be convinced Billy likes someone for something else than just fool around.”
You both nod, repeating the same thumbs-up gesture. Taking a deep breath you wait for the sign and starts moving, doing pretty much the same until you're both out of the car, but this time, when Dacre pulls your arm, you act as if the pull was stronger then it actually was, letting yourself collide against his chest before stepping away. “Are you really going to walk home with that... Thing out there?”
“Does it look like I have a choice? You just saw that and you still couldn't bring yourself to drive a lady home. You're such a gentleman.” Instead of just putting a finger on his chest, you push him away with both hands, not keeping the normal distance as doing so, and letting your eyes fall on his unbuttoned shirt for a couple of seconds before raising your them again. You feel the heat on your cheeks, and you know you're blushing. Checking him out was not the intention.
Dacre's eyes meet yours, and for a second they soften before the usual annoyance comes back. You wonder if he's trying to say something, give you a hint about something he wants to do, but you have no idea what it might be. “Cut the bullshit and let's go, princess.” The weight on the last word is different, lower, meant as in insult, an irony.
“Let go!” You whisper-yell, trying to pull away, but you stop when Dacre holds the other arm, trying to drag you to the car. His stare is intense, and the cameras move a little, coming closer, and you know they're focusing on your faces. “Let go.” You repeat, much lower this time, trying to put some distance between you and him, since your bodies are way too close already.
“Get your butt–” The crack again, the stare at the woods, and the sudden change of moods. Run now, fight later. “Let's get the hell out of here.”
Nodding in agreement, you give your arms one last push, and Drace's eyes come back to you as if remembering he was still holding you, finally releasing his grip. You both run to the car and the scene is over.
Despite saying it was perfect, the director wanted two more takes. He wants proximity, touching, anger mixed with a sudden, recently discovered passion from an unexpected connection at first sight. You're happy to hear that you did achieve that, not sure if it came from your skills or the funny feeling you had in your stomach through the scene. It's weird to have someone you basically just met so close, only inches away.
When it's all done, you take off the outfit and put your clothes back on after washing the make-up away. Then you wait for Vicky, leaning against the minivan, scrolling through your Instagram feed.
“Hi again.” You see Dacre approaching through the corner of your eyes, raising your head to look at him. “Have you checked in at the hotel yet?”
“Yes, just before coming here.” All the actors are staying at the same hotel, just so it's easier to gather everyone around when needed, and be sure of the time it gets for them to get on set.
“I came in my car. I can give you a ride there if you like.” As he speaks, you see Vicky coming, talking with the director. Which you still don't know the name yet.
“I came with Vicky, my agent.” Gesturing at her, you feel embarrassed to decline, and you hope Vicky will say something to help you out as she usually does. “Right, Vi?”
“Oh, no.” Waving her hand in a fast motion, she puts a lock of her blond hair behind her ear. “Remember what I told you? Make connections, friends. Don't stick with me during the whole production.” She reaches out her hand and Dacre politely shakes it. “I'm Victoria Klein. (Y/N)'s agent and her mother's oldest friend.”
“Dacre Montgomery.” He simply says.
“You may take her to the hotel. I have some things to do and she needs to rest. Long day tomorrow.”
You just watch as Vicky sets you up as if you're not even there to make your own call. But you're too shy to say anything else, to still refuse Dacre's kindness. “Ok then. See you, Vicky.”
“Have a good night.” She says after giving you a quick hug.
Silently, you follow Dacre through the set to the parking lot. His car is among several different trucks, some of them already leaving. “Nice car.” You tell him as you get into the passenger seat.
“It's rented.” Dacre turns the ignition and the car comes to life. “I can't be without a car. What if I need to go somewhere?”
“Fair enough.”
He drives through the huge set and you fall into a comfortable silence, not sure of that to say. It would help if you could see some kind of landscape or anything at all through the window. Then you wouldn't look like an idiot with eyes glued at nothing but darkness.
“Did you stop to speak to the journalists?” Dacre asks when you reach the exit, waving at one of the guards.
“Yes. You?”
“Yeah. What did they ask?”
“Spoilers.” Shrugging your shoulders, you give him a glance, and he does the same. “About Amy's and Billy's relationship. What can be expected after their meeting in the season finale.”
A low giggle escapes his lips. “Wait until they know.”
“But they will have to wait until next year.”
“You did well back there. You actually blushed. How did you do that?” He stops at the red light, and you feel when he looks at you. Running a hand through your hair, you meet his eyes.
You weren't trying to blush. You just did. “I'm a very good actress.” Giving him a sassy smirk, you see when his lips break into a smile. It's different from Billy's smile, he doesn't act like he's trying to hide some unknown meaning behind it.
“You sure are.” The red light turns green and you start moving again. “Uhm... There will be a kissing scene, you know.” Oh. The kissing scene. You read through it, of course, you just didn't give much thought about it. “Have you ever done a kissing scene?”
“No.” The answer is quick, you don't have to think much. “In my long list of three movies, in two of them my character didn't have any romantic interests and in the other one it was platonic.” Dacre had done it, you remember from some movie, not sure which one. Your mother insisted on watching some of his movies, just so you'd ‘get to know your co-star skills’ before actually having to work with him. But it's different. It's completely different watching a character on screen and then meeting the person behind it.
“Oh, ok. I hope I won't make you feel uncomfortable.”
“Don't worry about that.” You're a professional, and that's your job. It's just a kiss anyways, and the scene won't be shot any time soon. You'll have time to get used to the idea.
“I just think that since our characters arch is connected from now on, it would be good to get to know each other. It helps a lot when the co-stars are somehow friends.”
“Of course.” He has way more experience in this than you, so whatever he says, you agree.
When you get to the hotel, Dacre leaves his car on the underground parking lot, and, despite having his room key, he insists on accompanying you to the reception to get your card. Once you're in the elevator, you rest your back against the mirror, watching the numbers as they light up.
“We should exchange numbers,” Dacre says, turning to look at you. “In case some of us need to go through the lines or work on something.” He shrugs his shoulders, the light fabric of his white shirt moving. “It's a thing among us. You'll be invited to a lot of parties like that.”
“Sure.” Taking your phone off your pocket you unlock it and hand it over to him as he does the same. Quickly, you type your number and save if on his contacts list.
“That's my stop.” He says when you reach the 14th floor. “See you tomorrow.”
“Good night.” You mumble, waving at him as the elevator door closes again.
The first thing you do when you get to your room is kick off your shoes, already undressing to hit the shower before throwing yourself on bed. It's very late and you won't have many hours of sleep. You're halfway to the bathroom when you take your phone to put on some music. But you don't recognize the object in your hand. After a moment of confusion, you realize it's Dacre's phone.
“What now?” Stopping on your tracks, you start making the way back and gathering the clothes you left on the floor, putting them on again. Since you don't know the number of his room and knocking from door to door is ridiculous, you decide to call reception and just ask. But on your way to the landline they have near the couch, Dacre's phone starts ringing. You were wondering who would it be when you read your own name on the screen.
“Oh, hi.” You're quick to pick up. “I guess you have my phone.”
“Yeah, I got lucky it didn't lock, or else I'd have to call reception asking for your room.” His voice gets a lot darker through the phone. “Would you tell me which one is it? I'm already heading to your floor.”
“1703.” Already making your way to the door, you hear the soft beep of the elevator's doors opening.
“I'm almost there.” He's still speaking when he turns the corner, getting into your sight. You hang up, a shy smile on your face. “Sorry about that.” He hands you over your phone and you give him back his.
“It's alright. We're both tired.” You expect him to just say good night and leave, but he doesn't, shifting his weight from one leg to another.
“Have you met the others yet? Natalia, Joe, Millie...?”
“No, not yet.” You've heard they are very close, and you're the new girl in set. Saying you're nervous doesn't get anywhere close.
“I'm your only friend so far then.” Dacre states. “I'll break the ice with the others, don't worry.” He smiles again, and now, under the bright lights of the hotel hall, you can see his face perfectly. His blue eyes, a lot kinder then they were earlier today when he was Billy.
“Thanks. Guess I'll see you tomorrow then... Pool scenes.”
“Pool scenes.” He repeats. “I'll leave you to sleep now. Good night, (Y/N). Again.”
“Good night, Dacre.” Standing by the door, you watch as the walks away, towards the elevators.
You're about to head inside when, just before he turns around the corner, Dacre gives you one last look, a smile coming to his lips when his eyes meet yours.

[part two]
they say you’re basic,
they say you’re easy
you’re always ridin’ in the backseat
#4
“You think I should apologize to her?”
Annie paused, loosening her grip on the pencil in her hand.
She glanced over at Steve who was sprawled out over her bed, pulling at the loose threads in one of her old knitted sweaters with an absent look on his face. She sighed and put her pencil down, pushing her homework to the side before turning fully in her chair to face him.
“Do you have anything to be sorry for?”
He continued pulling at the sweater’s sleeve for a few seconds.
“Yes,” he paused. “No,” another pause. “Maybe.”
Annie rested her hands on the back of her chair. “Which is it?”
Steve dropped the sweater and tossed his head back, watching the ceiling.
“I’m not sorry for what I said,” he told her with finality. “But maybe I went about it the wrong way. Maybe I rushed into it, got ahead of myself. She’s been so wrapped up in this thing with Barbara and I tried telling her to forget about it. That’s not right… is it?”
“You didn’t tell her to forget about it,” Annie assured him. “You were just trying to help her live her life. There’s nothing that can be done for Barbara now and if she keeps dwelling on it, it’s going to eat her up inside and that’s not healthy. You were just trying to help.”
“Yeah but she didn’t see it that way,” Steve denied.
Annie breathed out slowly.
It’d been a couple days since he’d last spoken to Nancy – some heated confrontation in an alleyway between the school about that night at the party. At first Steve was obviously upset at Nancy for it and decided to give her the cold shoulder, but now that he’d let it simmer for a few days he was starting to feel guilty. Annie hated that he blamed himself for a situation that wasn’t his fault. Maybe it wasn’t Nancy’s fault either, she didn’t know. Maybe it was just the way things needed to be. Maybe he and Nancy weren’t meant to live happily ever after. But she couldn’t tell him that.
“So a truce then,” Steve suggested, pulling Annie out of her trance. She blinked and looked over at her best friend again, who was now fiddling with the corner of her bedspread. “We just need to compromise. I’ll stop butting in, let her work through her issues with Barb because she deserves that, and I’ll just give her some space. And eventually – maybe – it’ll all work out.”
“Give her space but still be together?” Annie asked, resting her chin on her hands. Steve’s eyes flicked over to hers.
“Well, yeah,” he nodded like it should’ve been clear. “I think she just feels smothered. I don’t think I’ve just let her be since everything happened, you know?”
“Or maybe she’s just distracted by something else,” Annie hinted, hoping he would catch on.
She knew Nancy had been spending time with Jonathan Byers. Steve knew she’d been spending time with Jonathan Byers. Everyone knew Nancy Wheeler was sneaking around with Jonathan Byers. Apparently they’d skipped fourth period together once and didn’t come back to school at all. God knows what they had gotten up to but Annie wasn’t buying the innocent sob story. She knew Nancy was hurting, she could understand that, but Nancy also wasn’t telling Steve the whole truth. And that wasn’t okay in Annie’s book.
Steve’s brows furrowed. “What?”
Annie pursed her lips. She didn’t want to have to say it out loud and after Steve’s eyes skimmed her face it seemed to click. His face slackened and he rolled his eyes, leaning back against her pillows again.
“I’m not an idiot, okay? I know she’s been hanging around Jonathan a lot lately. But they’re friends aren’t they? Friends hang out. You and I are hanging out.”
“Yeah…” –but we don’t make gross eyes at each other the way they do, she wanted to say.
“So it’s okay. I was a dick to him before, so this is me making up for that. They’re friends,” Steve nodded, seemingly to himself. “They’re friends.”
She couldn’t tell who he was trying to reassure, her or himself. She sighed again and pushed out of the chair to sit on the foot of the bed near his feet.
“They’re friends,” she said, if only for his benefit. It wasn’t worth an argument. “So what do you want to do?”
“I wanna talk,” he bit his lip before nodding and sitting up. “I wanna talk to her. In person. It’s early, right?” he glanced at the clock on her bedside table. “Yeah, she should be home.”
“Wait, right now?” Annie’s forehead wrinkled. “I thought we were going to go see a movie?”
“We can,” Steve said, jumping off the bed. “Later tonight, alright? After I’m done at Nancy’s. I figure if it goes well we can see an action-adventure,” he inclined his head before lifting one of his hands, “or if it goes bad then we can see a romantic comedy. Those are therapeutic in times of relationship crisis, right?”
“Yeah,” Annie snorted. “For girls with half a brain maybe and no realistic sense of how the world actually works. Those movies are never accurate.”
“Remind me not to go to you whenever I suffer my next heartbreak.”
“Noted,” she grinned.
Steve made to leave her room but stopped himself short in the doorway.
“Wait. Should I go empty-handed?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, flowers. Girls like flowers, right?”
“Most girls do,” Annie nodded slowly, dread seeping into her gut.
“Maybe I should get her some. You know, as a gesture,” he said. He seemed indecisive and after a moment’s pause he gave her a helpless look. “You’re a girl. What would she like? What would you like?”
Annie’s shoulders slumped. “Flowers would be good I guess.”
“Great,” Steve nodded enthusiastically. “Come with me to the shop?”
That was how Annie found herself sitting in the passenger seat of Steve’s BMW as he pulled into the parking lot of the nearest strip mall. There was a convenience store, a video shop, and a florist all side by side across from a rundown gas station. Steve killed the engine and pushed the driver door open and Annie slowly stepped out the other side, squinting up at the glowing sign. It was still fairly early, only just past noon, and the sky was overcast. She tugged her jacket closer before meeting him at the front of the car.
“You know what,” Annie said as he was about to make a beeline for the front door. “Why don’t I just wait out here? It’s nice outside,” she tried to smile through her chattering teeth. “Fresh air’s good. I like air that’s fresh.”
“Um, alright,” he almost looked concerned at her weird behavior before all thoughts of Nancy clouded his judgement again and he was all business. “What flowers should I go for? Pink ones? Yellow ones? Daisies are a thing, right?”
“Something casual maybe,” Annie suggested. Steve snapped his fingers and pointed at her.
“Roses,” he announced with gusto.
“That’s not what I—“
“You’re the best, Ann. I’ll be right back!” he jogged inside and Annie huffed, crossing her arms over her chest as she leaned back against the hood of the car.
He was making a mistake going back to Nancy. She had a bad feeling that he wasn’t going to like what he found, whether it be her with Jonathan at her house or her telling him that she’s not interested anymore, or anything else just as bad. But again, she couldn’t tell him that. Once Steve had his heart set on something there was no changing his mind unless she wanted to start a fight.
Since fights with Steve were one of her least favorite things, she cleverly kept her mouth shut.
She tapped her shoe against the pavement as she waited, occasionally people-watching or finding things to stare at before she heard the roar of a car engine. She jumped at the sudden noise and glanced over her shoulder to find the culprit, hearing the squeal of tires before a painfully familiar blue Camaro pulled crookedly into one of the open spaces a few paces down from where she stood.
“Oh great,” she muttered as she watched Billy Hargrove step out, tossing a cigarette butt onto the ground and crushing it beneath the toe of his shoe. The passenger door then opened and a head of wild strawberry blonde hair appeared over the hood of the car. “Oh great,” Annie repeated once she realized who it was.
Vicki was a curvy redhead with sharp features and a pretty face who ran with Carol’s crowd, a girl Annie really wished she didn’t know. Ever since Steve royally fell out with Carol and her boyfriend Tommy, there was nothing but bad blood between them and, of course, since Annie sided with Steve she basically had a neon target painted on her back. It was nothing she couldn’t handle (and by handle she meant avoid) but she always dreaded being near Carol or anyone related to her, knowing that she was sure to get a mouthful of snide remarks and a headache from whoever it was. Because leaving her alone just made too much sense.
Of course, once the two reached the front of the shiny Camaro, Billy tossed his arm around Vicki’s neck and steered them right in the direction of where Annie was standing. She thought about just getting into Steve’s car to avoid confrontation but that would’ve drawn too much attention to herself, so instead she just looked the other way and prayed neither of them spotted her.
No dice.
“Well, well,” a low voice drawled. “Look who it is.”
Annie bit the inside of her cheek before turning to look at the two who paused a few feet away from her on the sidewalk. Their expressions weren’t exactly the same – Billy looked mischievous whereas Vicki just looked hostile – but they each had a level of ridicule on their faces that made Annie’s stomach feel heavy. She was definitely going to get a headache.
“Annie Lane,” Vicki sneered. Her eyes took notice of the car Annie was leaning against. “Loverboy got you chained on a leash outside? Makes sense I guess,” she chuckled. “Dogs aren’t allowed inside.”
Annie stiffened, her cheeks feeling hot.
Billy wetted his lips, his tongue poking against his cheek as he watched her. He then nudged Vicki.
“Go on,” he nodded towards the convenience store. “Get your shit. I’ll wait here.”
He pulled his arm from around her neck, tucking his hand inside his jean pocket. Annie swallowed and narrowed her eyes at Vicki who looked like her chew toy had just been taken away. She cut her eyes at Annie and gave a cold smirk.
“Hands off the merchandise.”
“Go,” Billy said, raising his voice a little. Vicki pursed her lips before pushing one of the glass doors open, leaving the two of them alone.
Annie adamantly looked the other way.
“So,” Billy stepped down from the sidewalk, knocking his knuckles on the car’s hood. “This Harrington’s car? Guess I shouldn’t be surprised,” he laughed derisively. “He looks like the Beamer type.”
“What do you want?” Annie asked stiffly.
“Just to chat,” he shrugged innocently. “King Steve said to do it somewhere else,” he gestured around them. “Looks like somewhere else to me. You grounded out here or something?”
“Just didn’t want to go in,” Annie crossed her arms tighter over her chest, avoiding eye contact with him. His white shirt was buttoned low, revealing more of his chest than was necessary especially for the weather. She asked before she could stop herself, “What are you doing with Vicki?”
“Can’t really keep that answer PG,” he grinned, licking his teeth. “Why, you don’t approve?”
She rolled her eyes. “I don’t care what you do.”
“Or who I do?”
She curled her lip at him in disgust. He laughed, tossing his head back and causing his curly hair to bounce against his neck.
“I forgot. Can’t talk dirty around the proper Annie Lane.”
“I’d rather you not talk to me at all.”
“Feisty,” Billy took a step towards her. Annie straightened defensively and Billy lifted his palms to pacify her. “Chill out. Jesus. No animosity here,” the tension in her shoulders ebbed away a bit and he rolled his eyes in one of those annoying ways that reminded her of a pre-teen who was being snide to his parents. He leaned against the car next to her and pulled a cigarette from behind his ear, flicking a lighter open and cupping it until the end lit. He exhaled a puff of smoke and Annie’s nose wrinkled at the scent.
“Those are bad for you, you know.”
“That’s the idea,” he replied. Annie was the one to roll her eyes this time.
“Right, how practical.”
She ignored Billy’s stare for as long as she could before slowly turning to meet it. He blew a generous amount of smoke in her face and she coughed, fanning the air. He smirked again.
“Haven’t you ever wanted to do anything bad?”
“No,” she strained through the smoke. “Hence the reason they’re ‘bad’. We as a society are taught not to do those things.”
“Bad can be fun,” he pointed out, wrapping his lips around the cigarette. She watched without meaning to and of course he noticed. He pulled away and lifted the cigarette. “Wanna try?”
“No thanks,” her lips twisted. Billy licked his lips again.
“Why not?”
“I’m trying not to get lung cancer, if it hadn’t crossed your mind.”
He rolled his eyes again. “One hit won’t kill you.”
Annie chuckled without emotion. “So this is what all those peer pressure classes were preparing me for. ‘Just try it,’ they say. ‘I’m a bad boy in a leather jacket, ooh.’”
“Actually it’s denim,” he corrected offhandedly. Annie gave him a bemused look. He flashed his pearly white teeth at her and though it was decidedly mocking, it was still sort of pleasant to see.
“You know you have a nice smile,” she commented, throwing him slightly off guard. “It’s a shame it’s attached to the rest of your face.”
Billy’s eyebrows rose. For a second she was afraid she’d crossed a line but his expression didn’t really convey anger or annoyance, just vacant surprise.
“So was that an insult or just a backhanded compliment?”
Annie considered the question. “Bit of both.”
Billy hummed and took another drag of his cigarette. Annie felt less tense than she had when he’d first arrived with Vicki but she still wasn’t exactly comfortable. She frowned at the flower store. What was taking Steve so long? Was it really that difficult to pick out a handful of roses?
“There’s a party tomorrow,” Billy announced suddenly. Annie frowned over at him, wondering why he was telling her this. “You know, no parents. Kegs. Naughty dancing. General inappropriateness. A lot more where this came from,” he lifted the cigarette between two fingers, smirking out of the corner his mouth. Clearly he was making fun of her again. “Might be too much for Miss Prim-and-Proper to handle but if you ever wanna see what bad feels like,” he gave her a half-lidded look, lips delicately pouting. “I can show you.”
It’d been a long time since Annie had been invited to an actual party. She never went to the one where all the drama with Steve and Nancy started, and since then she’s had no real desire to participate in any future parties. And here was Billy Hargrove – Hawkins High bad boy, asshole extraordinaire, inviting her to one.
She was pretty sure this was all part of his master plan to get to Steve, because for whatever reason he’d made it his mission to get as far under her best friend’s skin as possible. Even still, she didn’t know what to say. She knew she absolutely did not want to go to a party filled with people she hated, doing things she hated, while pretending like she didn’t hate it.
But she also didn’t know how to tell him that, and part of her wanted to ask why he invited her just to see what he’d say.
But she could see Steve walking through the store, a bouquet of red roses in his hand, and she did not want him to catch her and Billy making small talk again. Especially not while leaning against his car.
She quickly pushed herself off the car and cleared her throat, putting a good three feet of space between them. Billy arched an eyebrow, that sultry ‘I’ve been working on this smolder since I was thirteen’ look on his face still present until he realized why she backed away. An almost amused grin pulled at his lips and he took another drag from his cigarette, kicking away from the car just as Steve stepped out of the store.
Annie smiled an overly-cheery smile at Steve, watching out of the corner of her eye as Billy slinked around the back of the car next to her, slipping unnoticed out of Steve’s eye line.
“Hey,” Steve said breathlessly. “Sorry I took so long, the guy at the counter knew my dad and he wouldn’t stop asking about how he was. I tried making an escape but he was clever. He blocked my path.”
Annie laughed forcefully despite the fact that Steve had genuinely been trying to make a joke.
“It’s okay, don’t worry about it! Hey, the flowers look nice,” she nodded at the bouquet, her attitude pulling a complete 180 from before. If Steve noticed, he didn’t comment on it. “She’s going to love them.”
Steve gave her a half-grin. “Yeah, well, we’ll see. C’mon, I’ll take you back home.”
Annie nodded and stepped around the car, grabbing the door handle. Without meaning to she looked up in the direction of where Billy was leaning against his own car, back facing their way. And as if he could sense her stare, he turned his head and met her eyes.
He winked, blowing smoke into the air. There were so many promises in that look, promises and possibilities that Annie didn’t even want to think about.
She quickly looked away and got in the car, breathing out the second she sat down and closed the door behind her.
Just forget it, she thought. He’s just trying to mess with your head. Just pretend like it never happened.
But that was much easier said than done.

Month in Review // Christmas is Over Thank Fuck – December
Christmas is officially done and dusted and honestly, I am so fucking thankful.
I loved Christmas day but the days leading up to Christmas? I’m good thanks, can I get Christmas without them next year?
Between the chaos that is Christmas and the extra shifts at work (plus a month-long convoluted promotion) and no longer having a best friend, because of course, I am ready to disappear for at least a year.
Sadly I can’t do that so here we are to discuss my month!
December
Month’s TBR
I didn’t set one!
Read
│Lady Mary│Lucy Worsley │

│★★★│Read Dec 18│
│ This was fine??? A little boring, but I actually didn’t mind the MC and was surprised that I got through it? Maybe only having to read it in 30 minutes spurts while I was exercising did this book, and me, a favour.
│The Monsters We Deserve│Marcus Sedgewick │
│
│★★★│Read Dec 27│ This was confusing but I liked it??? Convinced me to read Frankenstein though!
Book of the Month
│To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before│To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before│Jenny Han│

│ This was so stinking cute! I think I might like the film a little better but this was still a very good read and I look forward to the rest of the books in the series!
Look at all those books.
Listen, December was tough, take pity on me, please.

I actually got through Charmed very quickly and I have no idea how???
All Stars 4 has only just started but I’m already up to date!
I kind of watched Wreck-It Ralph and by kind of I put it on and sort of paid attention. Oops.
I was planning on seeing Ralph breaks the internet with my nephews but they want to see Bumblebee instead so I guess I’ll watch it next month!
I didn’t watch Ratatouille because I didn’t end up having a movie day with my (now ex?) best friend.
And I don’t think I’ve watched any Buzzfeed Unsolved but I don’t think there has been any new episodes?

Month’s Goals
Try and post 4 times a week like I have been!
I wanna try audiobooks again???
No Borrowing library books unless they’re holds or audiobooks
Continue going on walks 4-5 times a week. 3 at the very least!
Keep up with Bullet Journal because it actually helps me get shit done and be less of a mess.
Try not to eat loads of takeaway, even though I’m gonna be super busy and tired, unless unavoidable.
Make one of Chrissy Teigen’s recipes because they look Bomb af
I mostly kept up with my blogging schedule!
I didn’t find an audiobook I wanted to read available from my library so I just didn’t listen to any. Plus I’m annoyed at myself because Audible had like a 3 months free trial thing happening and I forgot to sign up until the day after the promotion ended. Also from what I hear the American Audible is better so I don’t know if maybe I should sign up for that one?? I know when I was signed up, I was with the UK one because it was better but I don’t know if they let you do that anymore? If anyone can help me I’d really appreciate it! Also, $17 a month is just a lot of month to me.
I haven’t been to the library unless it was to return books!
I realised that the Bullet Journaling gives me too much power! Here’s the thing, I like things to be customisable because I work out what I want and get angry when I can’t do things that way. Unfortunately, I think Bullet Journals are too customisable for me and isn’t really working?? I don’t know. I’m going to look into other diaries for the new year and see if I can find something that fits me better.
I did eat more takeaway than last month so that’s not great but I also didn’t eat more than I used to so that’s good and what I did eat of it were mostly small things. Still not great though!
I’m trying to make @chrissyteigen’s Chicken Pot Pie recipe and I’ve burnt the crust, it’s taking me ages, my arm is sore, everything is in American measurements, I thought I’d get it done in an hour like an idiot who doesn’t read recipes through properly and I wanna die.

I Did Things
I went to the movies with my mum twice this month!
I also went to the movies with my sister which was good! Then we came home and watched Christmas movies together and things got a little emotional and there was a little miscommunication but we worked it out and I’m hoping that we spend some more time together in the coming weeks.
My sister and I both don’t really have a whole lot of people we’re close to. We’re introverts but we also craving some socialising to a point so I think it’ll be good to have us spend some time together. It would also be nice to grow closer to her because I know we both are in need of people we can trust and talk to openly.
My mum and I babysat my Nephew this month as well and it was so much fun. He’s such an easy baby! Literally you can sit him on the couch and he’ll bounce himself off the back of the lounge for hours. He put himself to sleep doing it. Twice.
He’s very cute!
Uhhhh I Maybe No Longer Have A Best Friend?
Long story short I told my best friend of over 10 years that I was officially and legally changing my name for Christmas (it was never a secret that I wanted to change it, she’s known for years) and she didn’t react well at all.
I was firm and told her that if she wanted to continue in my life she had to respect me, and that includes respecting my name and be prepared for big changes ahead.
I’ve given her space to process and decide but haven’t heard from her since so I don’t know, it’s a bit up in the air but I’m handling it surprisingly well so maybe it’s a sign that us parting is for the best???
I don’t want to lose her, but I won’t lose myself to keep her. I won’t sacrifice pieces of myself for the sake of others anymore. All that does is validate toxic behaviour and cost me my health and happiness.
She was kind of my only actual real-life friend who I speak with outside of work so uh good thing I’m too busy to feel lonely.
But I’m super grateful for the people I’ve met through the book community, having this blog and talking to you all reminds me that I’m not really alone. I just have to reach out to people which is, um…not easy for me but I’m trying to work on it.
I hope y’all had a great month to end 2018 on!
What did you do this month? What did you read? What did you watch? What posts did you write that you’re super proud of?

VICKI: Welcome to Season 2 of the 10-Minute Teacher. Today we have one of the most motivational people I know for our Motivation Monday, Eric Sheninger @E_Sheninger has a new book that he has co-authored with Tom Murray @thomascmurray called Learning Transformed. http://amzn.to/2tWOSLF
So, Eric, how can you get us pumped up to transform learning this school year?
ERIC: When we think about transforming learning I think we have to look first and foremost at why we do what we do and ask our kids. All kids have greatness hidden inside them, it is the job of an educator to help them find and unleash it.
An essential mindset for starting the school year
Our mindset is perhaps one of the most important things we have as we start the school year. If we look at students as having greatness inside and view our job as unleashing greatness. It makes a big difference!
ERIC: How do we help them unleash it? You know what, first off, we got to focus on the ‘what ifs’ instead of the ‘yeah buts’. We have to look at the opportunities and the potential of the tools, the ideas, the pathways, the strategy that we have now to unlock creativity and limitless potential of our kids.
I think as we begin the year it really comes down to this, don’t prepare students for something, prepare them for anything. So as we reflect on our practice, how do we prepare kids for anything, how do we move past the status quo, how do we change our thinking? Because if we utilize the same old thinking we’re going to get the same old results. And when we think about transforming learning, Tom Murray and I spent well over a year looking at the research.
[00:02:00]
We unearthed over 180 research citations to focus on the why. I love the work of Simon Sinek @simonsinek, and if you have not watched his TED Talk on leadership and focusing on the why. It is a great way to start the year.
Motivate and Inspire Yourself to Be Remarkable
Start the school year with your colleagues by showing a video get in the right mindset. The Simon Sinek TED talk is a great one. If your principal doesn’t show you videos, watch it yourself to get in the right frame of mind. Don’t let the doing keep you from being the kind of teacher you need to be!
ERIC: But if we don’t articulate the why, our vision, our mission, our values it is kind of fuzzy. My message, Vicki, to everyone listening is as we think about out beginning of the year, celebrate our success, celebrate what we do well, but keep an eye – where do you want to be? And what are those areas of our roles that we can do what we do better?
VICKI: The why is so important and I hate say this – and my mom won’t be listening to this particular podcast, I hope, but sometimes our big ‘buts’ get in the way, they really do because so many times you talk about something transformational and then somebody look at you and here you see, and it’s coming and it’s coming and they say, ‘but’ and you’re like, “Please, let’s just focus on these students.”
We start building a culture of trust with our colleagues and students on the first day.
ERIC: Yeah it’s interesting. ‘Buts’ really put up a barrier, a roadblock. And that road block inhibits us from building a culture of trust. We need to build a culture of trust with our kids, with each other. When we think about our work, when we think about learning, it all comes down to relationships. Without trust, there is no relationship, without relationships, no real learning occurs. And those ‘buts’ just enable us to, again, revert back to a fixed mindset, status quo, this is the way we’ve always done things and yeah, I guess it’s worked.
But when we think about kids the world is different. Kids are learning differently, the environment in which they learn is different. So we need to think, learn and act differently.
VICKI: Yes, you have to relate before you educate.
Yes, you will hear me say this a lot. You have to relate before you educate. Before you create. Before you innovate. You relate first. I believe I’m a better teacher now because I’m better at relating and building those relationships. On Wednesday in episode 113, Nancy Blair will talk about a genius idea to help a whole staff relate better to students.
VICKI: Now, Eric, I want you to travel back to the time when you were principal and you’re looking at those teachers and you’re thinking about the first day and you’re about to give the a pump-up speech to really reach those kids and leave the past behind and move behind, what do you say?
[00:04:00]
Eric Sheninger’s essential reading list
Leaders are readers and readers are leaders as John Maxwell says. (I paraphrased a bit.) I keep a list of books I might want to read in my to-do app. Many years a go, I read that Brian Tracey says to be in the top of your field, you need to only read an hour a day. That has been my habit for at least eight years now and it does make a difference. Here are some great books to start reading.
ERIC: Well, I can tell you what I did many, many years ago. Part of my mindset shift was reading a lot of books. I read Drive by Dan Pink, Linchpin by Seth Godin, Outliers by Malcom Gladwell, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, and I read another book, it was called the No Complaining Rule by Jon Gordon and the rule was simple. Let’s not complain, we don’t want our kids to complain but complaining helps to create an environment that’s not conducive to change innovation. So when we think about our complaints and we think about our challenges which we have, we have realistic challenges. I would encourage everyone to think about solutions. If we focus on solutions as opposed to excuses and challenges we can truly begin the process of implementing the type of changes that our kids will appreciate.
And the other thing I would say is put yourself in the shoes of your students. Would you want to learn under the same conditions as your kids? Would you want to learn in the same environments as your students? And I think that gives us a lot of motivation to begin to change our practice, help our kids see value by modeling and implementing a better way.
The Biggest Mistake Educators Make Starting the School Year
We need to lear from our mistakes. But if we learn from the mistakes of others, we can get better, faster.
VICKI: So Eric, what’s the biggest mistake educators make when they start the year?
ERIC: I think the biggest mistake is we’re so focus on getting the schedule set up, going through our syllabus, going through the rules the expectations, going through them monotony of school. Basically, we’re prepping the kids for another year of school. And I think we have to flip it. I think instead of going through the monotony of the job and what we think we have to do because that’s the way it’s always been done, what about thinking about asking kids, engaging them, why are they here? Why is learning important? How can we together create an amazing learning experience for you? What do you need to be successful?
[00:06:00]
And I think taking Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5Tw0PGcyN0 , the why, the how, ‘the what’ to sort of flip that first experience we have with our kids can really jumpstart learning and begin to set the stage for a pretty exciting things as the year goes on.
VICKI: So Eric, how do you have that conversation? Because honestly, some kids, if you say why are you here, it will be “because mama dropped me off”?
ERIC: And that’s the challenge. If kids don’t see the ‘why’, we don’t engage kids enough at understanding the significance of learning. And I think we have to have those more conversations, we can’t be afraid of having difficult conversations because if we let that mentality go on, as the year goes on we just run the risk of losing kids more and more. And I think that ‘why’ is tying into the bigger picture, the bold new world of work, the exciting world and thinking about our interest of our kids, aligning that in the beginning days to the work at hand. It’s a difficult conversation, Vicki, but I think it’s a conversation we shy away from much too often.
A remarkable school year starts by captivating kids on the first day. How will you do it? Sure, we need to cover procedures but think about what students will SAY about your class on the first day when they go home to their parents. The first day is an important first impression. Use it well!
VICKI: Well, and I believe that a remarkable school year starts by captivating students on the first day and I don’t know if anybody’s syllabus is exciting enough to captivate someone’s mind and capture their heart.
ERIC: I don’t think so. And I think in our book, Learning Transformed, Tom and I talked about redesigning learning experience and we really don’t focus as much on personalized learning as we do personal learning. Get to know your kids, find out how their summers went no matter how old they are. Find out what books they read, what did they do with their free time and use that as a catalyst to plan future lessons, future units, future projects. Get kids excited about why they’re in your classroom and what they’re going to gain from that experience.
VICKI: So Eric, we’re going to do a giveaway of your book, the information will be in the show notes. Tell us quickly about it.

About their book Learning Transformed
Enter the book giveaway competition.
ERIC: Learning Transformed was Tom Murray and my attempt to bring all of the research together to, again, emphasize the ‘why’ but the showcase innovate practices in action. We don’t just present a ton of research, we present educators across every position that are implementing change, that are getting results. Sir Ken Robinson @SirKenRobinson said in his words, “This is a manifesto for the change that we need in schools.” And that’s a lot coming from Sir Ken who’s work on creativity we all appreciate.
So I think educators will find it research-driven, evidence rich and sort of it showing how we can bring efficacy to all the amazing ideas that we’re talking about.
VICKI: So educators, let’s get out there and have a remarkable year. And Eric is giving us so many wonderful ideas. So let’s get motivated.
