Zach is sure, without a doubt, that he has already lived the best day of his life.
The moment he held Ella in his arms was when the world bloomed into a color he didnât know existed. Nothing could ever and would ever top that feeling.
He didnât expect that before thirty, heâd already experience the worst day of his life, too. But heâs certain he has.
He was in a fog, a bad dream he kept trying to wake himself up from. He had stepped into the guest room to see a piece of paper on Jadeâs bed and he knew before he even unfolded the letter that she was gone.
He read the last line of the letter over and over again. I canât live like this anymore. Deep down, he always feared that she would give up on them. But not like this. And not this soon.
After Ella was born, bitterness permanently etched itself into Jadeâs face. To her, the baby was always a mistake and Zach stopped being someone she loved and became nothing but the man she regretfully had a child with.
She became the antithesis of the girl he fell for. The love theyâd once had was replaced with a cold distance. She started sleeping in the guest room. She ate her meals alone. She left the house as much as she could.
Still, he respected that she had learned to tolerate motherhood. While she didnât love being a stay-at-home mom, he didnât think she hated it.
But then she left. And if she could abandon them like this, four years in, not even having it in her to look into her little girlâs eyes to say goodbye, then that tolerance had a cruel end.
Thatâs why now, a month after her sudden departure, Zach is sitting in his living room, fingers curling the corner of the resume belonging to the woman scheduled to arrive in a few minutes.
Dishes clatter as his mother tidies up his kitchen. Normally, heâd feel guilty and nag her to sit down. But things arenât normal and heâll take all the help he can get. Itâs been an uphill battle trying to pick up the pieces on his own.
His family drove in a few nights ago. They offered to visit as soon as he called with the news, but he didnât want to put Ella through too much at once, so he waited a few weeks. Once he asked them to come, they dropped everything and set out for the four-hour car ride.
Ellaâs playing in the backyard with her grandpa and aunt while Connie helps Zach run interviews. His teamâs managers were understanding when he asked for time off, but Zach canât be away forever. With his training and match schedule, he needs to find a nanny.
Heâd rather not introduce a new person into her life, especially this soon, but itâs unavoidable. At least with a nanny, he can control that Ella will always be in the comfort of her home. A place she knows.
Moments like these, he wishes he hadnât been drafted to a team a state away. If heâd stayed close to his hometown, Ella would see both sets of grandparents more often and heâd have dependable childcare until he figured out how to function as a single dad.
Zach looks over his shoulder through the window, swallowing the lump in his throat when he sees his daughter running circles around her grandpa in the morning sun. The chime of the doorbell throws him out of his trance.
Soft blue eyes meet yours when the door swings open. The stranger on the other side is tall and handsome and younger than you expected, his half-smile clouded by sorrow. You introduce yourself and he offers you a firm but gentle handshake.
âNice to meet you,â he says. âIâm Zach. Come in.â
You trail him into the large house, mind already racing with the potential of it becoming your workplace. The agency had set up the interview. You donât know much about the client, except that he has a four-year-old daughter and that he requested a nanny whoâs adaptable to a changing schedule.
After meeting Ellaâs grandmother, you settle on a couch and make small talk and answer their questions. You learn that Zach is a professional soccer player and that his work can be demanding and inconsistent, but with your apartment being close by, you assure him that youâre reliable and flexible.
By the end of the interview, the idea of a nanny doesnât make Zach nearly as uneasy as it did an hour ago. Youâre kind and experienced and knowledgeable and every time you see his little girl through the window, you smile in pure endearment.
Zach likes the idea of his daughter being around someone joyful. Jade grew to be so cold that Ella learned to go to her dad whenever she wanted to feel reassured and loved. Itâs comforting to imagine her growing to like you, maybe even love you, and to be met with the same warmth sheâs so full of.
The rest of the interviews go fine, but Zach has always operated on gut feelings and youâre a clear winner. His mom agrees.
ââââŕ¨ŕ§ââââ
After an agency rep calls to tell you that youâve been offered a trial period, you spend five days at the house getting to know Ella while Zach shadows to answer your questions. Heâs friendly and helpful, but visibly tense.
The final afternoon, youâre playing with Ella in the living room when Zachâs phone rings. Ella rushes over to his side, asking if itâs her mommy calling. You notice the nervous way his jaw clenches when he kneels to the floor.
âItâs grandma,â he tells her, holding his phone out so the camera will capture them both.
You pretend you didnât hear Ella's question. You know nothing about her mom and you wouldnât dare risk crossing a boundary by asking.
Soon after the call, Ellaâs drawing at the dining table while you and Zach periodically glance across the room to check on her from the kitchen. Heâs been teaching you how he prepares Ellaâs favorite foods. He likes that you write everything down, asking him for details down to exact measurements. If he wasnât sure that you took the happiness of his daughter seriously before, he is now.
He already told the story to his family and to Jadeâs parents and to his closest friends, but that was with people he knew well. People who could comfort him. Heâs not sure how to share with you that she left, but he wants to hire you, and this is something you should be aware of.
After he slides a pan into the oven, he stands to face you, towering over you as he wipes his hands with a tea towel.
âYou have the job if you want it,â Zach says quietly. You smile at him appreciatively. You werenât feeling confident, considering how on edge heâs been, but you realize it must not have been you he was nervous about.
âThank you,â you reply. âI do.â
He nods, looking down as he leans against the kitchen island, and says, âShe starts kindergarten next fall. Youâd be alright with part-time hours then?â
âYes.â
âGood. Uh, you should knowâŚâ he says, turning his head to look over at his daughter, âher mom left. A little over a month ago. It was out of the blue.â
Your heart twists in pain at his words, at the agony that draws itself into his face.
âIâm so sorry,â you say, staring up at his profile. Zach blinks a few times, gazing at his daughter. You press your lips together, wishing you knew what to say.
âElla didnât get a goodbye,â he tells you. Neither did he, not a real one, but thatâs irrelevant. âI told her that her mom chose to leave and I donât know why she made that choice, but Iâm not going anywhere. If she brings it up, please say the same.â
âI will,â you reply with an understanding nod, âand only if she mentions it first.â
âThank you,â Zach says. âIâll be honest with you. I really donât want someone to leave her again. You are planning on staying as long as we need you, right? Even when the hours get shorter during the school year?â
He had that same note of desperation in his voice when he asked you about your commitment to the job during the interview, too.
âYes,â you assure him. âI understand that she needs stability right now.â
Based on the way Zachâs eyes lower, you can tell he needs stability, too. His wife not only left him, but she left him with their child. You canât imagine the hole that it dug in his heart.
âThanks,â he says. He takes a breath. He wasnât strong enough not to cry when he told Ella her mom was gone and heâll always hate himself for it, but at least he kept his tears from falling this time.
âDo you want to ask her what she thinks about it?â you offer. âI can go put away her laundry to give you some privacy.â
Zach nods in agreement. And as he expected, when he asks his daughter if sheâd like for you to hang around here more often after he goes back to work, she gives him an enthusiastic yes.
Youâre purposely slow with the laundry to give them time. You come back into the kitchen to see Ella happily eating a freshly baked muffin and swinging her feet, smiling up at her father as he sits next to her at the dining table.
âMy daddy said youâre gonna be here every day,â she says to you with a grin, overjoyed by the news.
âNot every day,â Zach corrects her gently. âBut most days.â
âTry this!â Ella exclaims, stretching her arm out towards you, the muffin in her fist. The way you happily accept the food even though itâs reduced to smushed fragments in his childâs small hand makes Zachâs heart feel a little lighter.
âThatâs delicious,â you say after you take a bite, settling at the table across from them.
Zachâs still getting used to having a woman around whoâs so sweet to his child. Jade would hardly ever accept Ellaâs offers to share her food, telling him that saying yes to everything would only raise a spoiled child.
âMy daddyâs the bestest cook,â she proudly says.
âBest,â Zach corrects. âThank you, honey.â
âHe really is,â you reply. âI donât know how Iâll fill his shoes, but Iâll try my best.â
Ellaâs face pinches in confusion as she kneels over in her booster seat to look under the table.
âI think his shoes will be too big for you,â she mumbles, pointing to your feet. You laugh, meeting Zachâs gaze, seeing the first genuine smile on his face. You didnât know he had dimples.
He canât remember the last time he laughed, really laughed, with someone like this. Lifeâs dealt him a tough hand, but youâve given him relief.
ââââŕ¨ŕ§ââââ
Zach is organized. So organized that it sort of amazes you. Not only does he give you his, and in turn, your work schedule a month in advance through a color-coded calendar, but he also provides you with a meal plan for Ella so that you donât have to worry about making one yourself.
The first day on your own with her is perfect. Sheâs energetic, well-behaved, and loves to talk. Zach left for training at noon and you were surprised that he found the time to text as much as he did. You replied to his every message asking for updates, sharing what youâre doing and reassuring him that Ellaâs doing okay.
He gets home an hour after Ellaâs bedtime. Heâs been on edge all day, worrying that all this was too much, too fast for his little girl. Maybe he should have taken more time off.
Youâre finishing up loading the dishwasher when you hear his keys jingling. You turn to greet him as he paces into the kitchen.
âHey, how was bedtime?â he asks.
âWe read three books and she asked me to stay with her until she fell asleep,â you tell him. âNo issues.â
Zach sighs in relief. He never liked afternoon training because he missed bedtime. Ella preferred bedtime with her dad over with her mom. She preferred everything with her dad, really. But hearing that she wanted you to stay is reassuring.
âAnd she ate well?â he asks. He settles on one of the stools lining the kitchen counter, watching you cross the room to stand opposite him.
âYes,â you tell him. âShe was great.â
âSorry if I was annoying with all the texts,â he says with a small, apologetic smile.
âYou werenât, but I wanted to let you know that itâs okay if you want to set up cameras. I know some parents like having live video they can tune into throughout the day.â Youâd already noticed the security cameras outside when you first came to the house. You understand why heâd be so protective.
Zach threads his fingers through his dirty blond hair, damp from the shower he took in the training centerâs locker room.
âAlright, I was definitely annoying if youâre offering to be surveilled,â he mumbles with a chuckle.
âNo,â you laugh. âElla did get a little frustrated, though. We were playing princesses and she said princesses arenât supposed to go on their phones this much.â
Zach breathes a laugh. Youâve only been here for six days, but he hasnât smiled this much in a long time.
âThank you for all your work today,â he says. âI wonât keep you any longer.â You give him a bright smile and wish him a good night before you head out.
When Zach trudges upstairs, he peeks into Ellaâs room. Sheâs sleeping peacefully, curled up with her favorite plushie. Now that he has a semblance of normalcy back in his life, he realizes that beneath the sadness and betrayal, he feels anger.
Itâs not typical of him to feel angry. But Jade set everything ablaze when she abandoned them and heâs been left in the ashes, trying to stay level-headed while heâs choking on smoke.
He knows he lost Jadeâs heart long ago. She lost his, too. Itâs the fact that she broke their daughterâs without any hesitation â thatâs what kills him.
ââââŕ¨ŕ§ââââ
Zach never takes you up on the offer to have cameras installed. He starts to let go, little by little, eventually going a full day without sending a single check-in text. Itâs gratifying to know youâve earned his trust.
Before you know it, youâve been Ellaâs nanny for two months. Sheâs made herself a home in your heart. The only way youâd ever leave her is if you were told to, and you canât even imagine being fired. Zach often checks in to see if youâre happy with your job and asks if thereâs anything he can do to make things better. He clearly values you and doesnât want to lose you.
Itâs mid-morning when youâre playing with Ella on the living room floor and Zach comes through the front door. She rushes to him and you smile as you watch him drop his duffle bag and happily scoop his daughter up.
He had an away game last night and flew in early. His skin is blanched, dark half-circles under his eyes, but like always, he finds energy for his daughter. You admire it about him, how sheâs never too much for him.
âThereâs a plate for you in the kitchen,â you tell him when he meets your gaze.
âYou donât have toââ
âI know,â you say with a laugh. Zach has already told you many times that Ellaâs the only one you have to feed, but you can tell he appreciates coming home to a meal. âThere were leftovers.â
âWere there?â he asks, brows quirked, an unconvinced smirk on his lips.
You shrug and laugh again. Youâve grown into a friendly level of comfort with each other and you appreciate how you can joke around with him.
Zach sits in the dining room to eat, listening to Ella tell him all about her playdate yesterday. You tidy up the living room as you overhear her chat about how her friend was showing her ballet poses and how badly she wants lessons.
Youâd sent Zach a courtesy text before you fell asleep in the guest room last night: We had a great day. She had a lot of fun on the playdate. Just so youâre prepared, sheâs VERY into ballet now and is going to ask you if she can get lessons. Sending some options. Then, you sent him a few links to childrenâs dance classes in town.
You woke up to two texts from him. The first said: Appreciate the warning and the research. Am I crazy for holding on to hope that sheâll like soccer one day? You smiled at your screen. Youâd briefly talked with Zach about how Ella has no interest in the sport her father dedicated his career to.
The second text from him, sent fifteen minutes later, read: Would you be alright with taking her to 6-6:45 pm classes on Wednesdays when I canât? The season starts next week.
You replied when you woke up: Definitely.
You enter the dining room to see Ella hanging off her dadâs shoulders while he tries to eat, continuing to rattle on about how sheâd never miss a lesson and would always listen in class.
âAlright, take a breath,â he chuckles. When he tells her you found her a class at a studio uptown and that heâll enroll her if sheâs sure she can commit, she squeals in delight. She hugs Zach, then runs over to hug you, too, nearly knocking you over.
âEasy,â her dad tells her. Ella asks you to turn on the ballet music playlist you found for her yesterday and launches into twirls across the living room.
âRemember what I said,â you tell her over the music. âIf you start to get dizzy, youâŚ?â
âSit down, I know!â she shouts. You meet Zachâs eyes, both of you wearing smiles. You can see the fatigue on his face under the bright dining room light.
âDo you want me to stay another hour so you can catch up on sleep?â you offer. âI donât mind.â
He knows his heart shouldnât skip when he looks at you, but it does. He canât help it. You donât see this as a job you clock in and out of. Youâve integrated yourself into Ellaâs life, into his life, so seamlessly. He doesnât feel like youâre an employee here. Youâre a friend who goes above and beyond to help. Youâre someone who his daughter adores. Youâre a beautiful person, inside and out.
He looks down at his plate, embarrassed, as if you can read his mind. His head has been doing this lately, rushing into thoughts of you that are much more than professional. He shouldnât be thinking that his daughterâs nanny is beautiful.
âItâs okay,â he tells you. âYou can head home. Weâll see you soon.â
You nod and call Ella over to look at the calendar Zach made. Itâs a routine with her every time you leave. She likes knowing when youâll be back.
When Zach heads upstairs to drop his things off into his bedroom, he stops when he passes the guest room. You left the door ajar. Even though you always keep it neat, only leaving an overnight bag on the nightstand, thereâs a lived in feeling, a warmth in the room that never existed before.
Once again, he has to remind himself that youâre paid to be here. But itâs hard not to like you, because even when Jade was living here, he felt alone, whereas having you around makes it hard to ignore that life doesnât feel all that empty anymore.
ââââŕ¨ŕ§ââââ
âWhich oneâs yours?â
You look over to the man sitting next to you on the dance studio bleachers. Young girls hop and whirl over the glossy hardwood floor in a sea of pink tutus, five minutes into their lesson.
âOh, Iâm...â You point to Ella. âHer nanny.â
Ellaâs been in ballet for a few weeks now and itâs all she talks about. Zachâs schedule allows him to take her to most of her classes, but this is the second one youâve come to and you can see just how much she enjoys it.
You make small-talk with the man and a few other parents, which makes the time pass quickly. When you get back to the house, Ella scarfs down her dinner and falls asleep during the first book you read her. Youâre sitting in the living room when Zach comes home from training.
Heâs nearing playoff season and heâs mentioned that he has much more practices booked in his schedule. At this point, he welcomes how you always pretend to accidentally make too much food. He doesnât expect you to prepare meals for him, but after youâd reassured him that you donât mind since youâre cooking anyway, heâs relieved to know heâll have dinner waiting for him tonight.
âHey,â you greet him from your spot on the couch. âBallet was the best idea ever. It really tires her out. Bedtime was a breeze.â
âRight?â Zach says with a smile, pulling off his jacket. You look away to avoid gaping at his biceps under his t-shirt. You thought he was good-looking the moment you met him and getting to know him has only made him more attractive.
âIâve been wanting to ask if youâd like any help with her birthday,â you offer, turning the tv off and standing up. Ellaâs fifth birthday is in a month.
âI have some ideas for her party that Iâd like your opinion on,â Zach tells you. âDo you want to stay for a few minutes? Or I can just text you.â
âI can stay.â
Heâs relieved to hear it. He doesnât have many moments with you alone. Usually youâre like passing ships in the night, chatting for just a couple of minutes to catch each other up about Ella before one of you leaves the house, so any window of time with you is something he welcomes. Your presence is comforting.
You sit at the kitchen island together. Zach eats as you scroll through his phone, gazing at screenshots of party ideas he saved.
âOh, sheâd love this,â you say, stopping at a photo of ballerina-themed cupcakes. He gazes at you in awe as you look down at the screen. Youâre genuinely delighted at the idea of giving his little girl a perfect birthday. âDo you want to have the party here?â
âYeah, do you think thatâs a good idea?â he asks.
âYeah. If youâre worried about decorating or cleaning up, Iâd come early and stay late,â you tell him, continuing to scroll. âShe deserves something big.â
He nods, swallowing down his food, too distracted to go for another bite. He canât wrap his head around how sweet you are. You have no connection to Ella at all, but you treat her like sheâs yours. Sometimes more than her own mother did.
Youâve been here for nearly four months now, which in the grand scheme of things really isnât that long, but he likes that you have such a deep sincerity to you that he can trust that you care about Ella. That you wonât leave.
You look up at him and he glances away, worried heâs been caught staring, clearing his throat.
âDo you know how many people youâre thinking of inviting?â you ask as you hand him back his phone.
Zachâs face falls as he scratches the back of his neck. Youâre suddenly tense, the air of familiarity between you now thick and uncomfortable.
âIâm not sure,â he says.
âSorry,â you say, nervous you crossed a line. âI didnât mean to overstep.â
âYou didnât,â he reassures you. âSorry. Iâve just been going back and forth on whether I should invite her grandparents. From her momâs side, I mean.â
âThat must be hard,â you empathize.
âTheyâve offered to visit a few times, but Ella hated the idea. She doesnât even want to talk to them on the phone.â
âWas she like that before?â You donât have to spell it out for him to know what you mean by before. The topic of Ellaâs momâs abandonment has been a silent cloud hanging over both of you.
âNo,â Zach says. âI think she makes the connection that theyâre her momâs parents and she doesnât want to be reminded of her.â
His lips close into a firm line.
âWell, I admire how you respect her comfort level and let her make decisions,â you say. âMaybe you start the conversation about who to invite and mention the grandparents to gauge her reaction?â
Zach nods, trying not to let his heart get carried away with the way it pounds from your words. Heâs received compliments on his parenting from his friends and family, but you see the type of father he is more than anyone else these days. He cares about your opinion and it feels good to hear you approve.
âThatâs a good idea,â he says. His fork clatters against his dish and he takes a deep breath before asking whatâs been spinning in his head. âI figure youâd tell me, but⌠she hasnât mentioned her mom, has she?â
You shake your head no. His forehead wrinkles in concern and it sends a pang to your chest. You lean a little closer, crossing the invisible boundary between you for the first time.
âShe could just be processing,â you tell him. âAnd it might take her a while to talk about it. But sheâs okay. Sheâs resilient. She got it from you.â
Zach hopes that heâs not blushing, but his cheeks are burning. Heâs sure youâd be able to tell, but thankfully, you look down and stand straight again, as if what you just said wasnât one of the most significantly unforgettable things heâs ever been told.
Ella is practically a physical copy of her mother. Zach never minded. But hearing that you think his daughter inherited his adaptability, one thing heâs always prided himself on, feels good.
He wasnât very confident that heâs been doing a great job at adjusting since Jade left and you just lifted a weight off his shoulders without even realizing it.
âThank you,â he says. You desperately want to ask how heâs been since his wife left, but youâre afraid youâve already crossed a line with your boss tonight and you certainly donât want to risk doing it again.
âSure,â you reply. âI should go. But Iâll let you know if I think of any ideas for the party. I think the ballerina theme is the way to go. This place will be so pink.â
Zach laughs, trying to ignore the way his chest hollows when you expand the distance between you, stepping away.
âCanât wait,â he says. âThanks for dinner.â
âThere were leftovers,â you reply, even though both of you are already well aware that every time you say that, itâs not true.
ââââŕ¨ŕ§ââââ
Itâs only half an hour into Ellaâs birthday party and youâre spent. Youâre reaching for napkins from the cupboard to clean up a spill in the dining room. When you turn out of the kitchen, a girl runs past you, tripping and accidentally pouring most of her juice onto your dress.
âSorry,â she says worryingly, eyes wide as she stares up at you.
âItâs okay,â you reply with a giggle, dabbing at the fabric with one of the napkins. âI came prepared.â
Zach just entered the room, witnessing the moment, wondering if heâs ever going to see you do anything that wonât just push him deeper into his crush on you. But once again, his head is no match for his heart when it comes to you.
Heâs been trying not to lose his mind today and itâs not because of the chaotic party thatâs taken over his house. Itâs because itâs the first time heâs seen you in a dress. While itâs appropriate for the occasion, it shows enough of your figure to make his mouth go dry.
You toss the napkin in the garbage, collect more, then start to make your way to the dining room, looking up to find Zachâs eyes.
âHey,â you say over the noise. He realizes that your voice somehow settles his pulse and makes it race at the same time. âThere might not be enough napkins in the world for this party.â
âInvite everyone she wants,â he teases, imitating the way you convinced him to go along with Ellaâs idea to invite all twelve kids from her ballet class.
âI take it back,â you chuckle. When you move past him, the fresh scent of his cologne dances over you and itâs so nice that you donât want to leave his side. But you shake away the thought and tidy up the spill, then head to the living room to mingle.
Itâs better to keep your distance from Zach. You have to remind yourself of it almost every day now. Youâd been spending more time together to plan Ellaâs party and at this point, itâs actually frustrating how kind and funny and charming and perfect he is.
It took a few evenings of party-planning at the house, your voices low as Ella slept upstairs, to start to get to know each other outside of your job. Youâve learned little things about him, like that heâs left-handed, and that he has a sister ten years younger than him and growing up with her helped him practice parenting, and that he likes a cup of tea before bed because it relaxes him.
You also noticed that he drifts into a more timid version of himself whenever the topic of his profession comes up. Youâd mentioned that Ella could eventually grow an interest in soccer, that youâd take her to one of his home games if she wanted, and he nodded with a shy smile, saying he liked the idea.
Every side of him is intriguing, and while your conversations havenât fallen into anything too personal, you want to know more about him past the friendly distance that stands between you.
Ella quickly darts past Zach in the kitchen and he reminds her that tag is an outside game. Heâs relieved that she seems happy and careless today.
Heâd asked her about inviting her momâs parents and she answered with a quiet no. He called them to tell them that this birthday would be too difficult to celebrate together and they understood, opting to send a present in the mail.
Zach is glad he took your advice. As he rounds the corner, he sees you chatting with Ellaâs friendâs dad. You probably know him from ballet. Zach has spoken with him, too. He knows the man is divorced.
Jealousy swirls in his chest. He shouldnât care about you talking to another man. Even though youâve started to share more about your lives with each other and heâs pretty sure youâre single, you could have a boyfriend you havenât mentioned.
Again, while he tells himself not to feel things for you, itâs so much easier said than done. He has to look away, wondering why he feels like someone whoâs not even his is being taken from him.
All the stress leaves your body the minute the last attendee leaves through the front door. It was a great party, but it was exhausting.
Ellaâs eating her dinner as you, Zach, and his family tackle the mess. You make conversation with her while you clean the kitchen, happy to hear her rave about what a good birthday she had.
She asks if you can cuddle her for bedtime. Zach overhears and trudges into the kitchen, crumpled decorations in his hands. He rolled the sleeves of his shirt up and you try to ignore the fact that the mere sight of his forearms makes your stomach go numb with butterflies.
âItâs been a long day,â he says to you quietly. âI can take bedtime.â
âI got it,â you reply. He mirrors your smile. You like that heâs not the type of parent to be bitter that his own kid prefers you sometimes. Heâs just happy that Ellaâs happy.
When youâre leaning back in Ellaâs bed, chatting as you wait for her to doze off, her arm is draped over your body and her cheek is on your shoulder. Sheâs grown to be totally comfortable with you, always taking the opportunity to be affectionate.
Your eyelids are heavy as you ramble about what sheâll be doing with her grandparents and aunt in the next few days, as theyâll be staying in town for a bit. Zach gave you the next three days off since childcare will be covered.
âI heard your grandma say something about taking you to the beach tomorrow,â you tell her. âAre you excited?â
âWill you come, too?â she asks. You chuckle softly, kissing the top of her head.
âI have work, remember?â you tell her. You and Zach had decided long ago that you donât want to tell her youâre paid to be here, that your job is taking care of her. You always just refer to yourself as her dadâs friend.
âOkay,â she sighs. She lets out a big yawn. âIf I tell someone my birthday wish, will it not become true anymore?â
âIâm pretty sure the rule is that you can tell one grown-up,â you play along, âand itâll still come true.â She nuzzles in. You assume sheâll mention a gift she wanted but didnât receive today.
âI wished that you were my mommy,â she mumbles into the dark.
Your throat tightens and your heart sinks and you hate that the sweet, innocent child clinging onto you has to carry the weight of being abandoned. You kiss the top of her head again and try not to cry.
âI love you, okay?â you tell her. She nods and squeezes you tighter and within minutes, her breathing grows deeper.
When you head downstairs, you see that almost all of the mess has been tidied up. Zach is hauling a full garbage bag to the front door, giving you a tired smile when he sees you.
âDo you need any help withââ
âGo home,â he interrupts, faking irritation. You laugh in defeat.
âFine.â You step into the living room to say goodbye to his family, antsy to have some time to yourself so that you donât have to force down your tears any longer.
A few seconds after the door shuts behind you, Zach remembers that heâd set aside a container of leftover treats from the party for you.
You pace down the sidewalk into the cool evening air, unlocking your car remotely, unable to stop your tears from building. When you hear Zach call your name, you quickly wipe at your eyes, realizing youâve smudged your make-up.
âThere were leftovers,â he says when you turn to look at him.
âThatâs my line,â you try to joke. You take the container. âThanks.â
He notices the shine in your eyes immediately.
âAre you alright?â Zach asks softly. You gaze up at him, heart breaking a little more at the concern in his expression.
âJust a busy day,â you tell him.
âDid something happen?â
âNo,â you say quickly. âOrâ yeah, but I was going to tell you later. Without the tears.â You offer a pathetic laugh to break the tension, but heâs too worried to laugh, too.
âWhat is it?â he asks.
You look up to Ellaâs bedroom window. The first time youâd walked up to this house, you were oblivious to the fact that the two people living in it would steal your heart. You know you need to tell him what his daughter said. But youâd hoped youâd have more time to process it.
âBefore bed,â you say, your voice thin, âshe told me she wished I was her mom.â
It takes all the air out of Zachâs lungs. He opens his mouth to reply, but heâs without words. He crosses his arms, looking down at the pavement.
âI know. Itâs a lot,â you mumble. Your temples ache as more tears build up, frustrated that this is Zach and Ellaâs reality. âIt just makes me so sad. I donât want to say anything bad about your ex-wife, but I donât understand how she could just leave you two. Has she not called to check in on her? Or to wish her a happy birthday?â
Your heart starts to thrum even harder. Your words were impulsive, surprising you even though youâre the one who said them, and the fear that you just crossed a line and exposed your feelings for him rushes through you.
âNo,â is all Zach is able to say. He stares at you, speechless, biting the inside of his cheek.
âWhen Ella said⌠what she said, I told her that I love her,â you say. âI hope thatâs okay.â
âOf course it is,â he says, his tone tender. Your lips twist into a sad smile. You want to hug him. But you step back. Because heâs still your boss and you donât want him to think you canât remain professional. Youâre already anxious and regretful that you brought up Ellaâs mom.
âThank you,â you say. âI should go. Good night.â
Zachâs dazed the rest of the evening. He watches you drive off. He goes back inside to finish cleaning up. He spends time with his parents and sister, but soon heads upstairs to sleep, too distracted to keep up conversation.
His mind keeps him awake as he lies in bed. He stares up at the darkened ceiling, watching the shadow of the trees by his window rustle in the wind. In a matter of a minute, your relationship reached a new level of vulnerability.
And now that he has time to wade through his feelings, beneath the pain he feels for Ella and what she told you, he canât deny that his heart fluttered when you said you donât understand how someone could leave him and his daughter. Maybe you feel the same way about him.
This is not just a crush. Heâs falling for you.
ââââŕ¨ŕ§ââââ
You stare at the text Zach sent you a few minutes ago as you brush your teeth the next morning.
Sorry for bothering you on your day off but Ella has asked me about 50 times (give or take) if I can ask you to come to the beach today. I told her youâre busy but you know her. No pressure but weâd all love to have you. Would count as a work day, of course.
It was already hard to keep your feelings for Zach at bay when all you can think about is his smile and his voice and the way he makes you feel more comfortable than any man ever has, but now, youâre afraid it might be awkward when you see him. Youâd said something so heavy last night, then left abruptly.
Nonetheless, the love you have for Ella and the love youâre starting to have for Zach is louder than the worry youâre feeling.
You reply: Donât count it as work. Itâs how Iâd like to spend my day off. When and where?
A minute later, he sends you the address and time.
Itâs late morning when you text Zach that youâve arrived at the beach. He heads to the parking lot, leaving his parents, sister, and daughter by the shoreline so that he can speak to you alone. He hates that he was too in shock to thank you last night. But it was all so much to take in.
He spots you pulling a bag out of your trunk, greeting you with a soft âheyâ to not startle you. Itâs so nice to know that youâre here because you want to be.
You turn to see Zach in his swim shorts, his hair wet, water droplets scattered atop his muscles. You close the trunk, hoping he didnât catch the way your eyes lingered.
âHey. Whatâd you tell Ella about the âworkâ I had today?â you ask, trying to establish a lighthearted tone. âDid my boss let me leave early?â
âWe can say that,â he says with a smile. âHe sounds like a good guy.â
âHe is. Itâs my other boss thatâs kind of a nightmare,â you joke.
Zach takes you in, squinting a bit.
âYou donât really think of me as your boss, do you?â he asks, realizing he hates the implication. It makes him feel like even thinking about you as more than a friend is deeply unethical. Like thereâs a power imbalance and heâs taking advantage of it somehow.
You still for a moment.
âI mean, I donât know,â you chuckle. âIt doesnât feel like it, but arenât you?â
âI guess.â His brows furrow. âIt just doesnât sound right.â
âHow about we say⌠Ellaâs my boss? And yours, too, now that I think about it.â
Zach laughs, âThat works for me.â He nervously crosses his arms. âUh⌠before we go, I wanted to thank you for handling last night so well. I think you said exactly what she needed to hear.â
Your face drops slightly. Remembering the way Ella sounded when she told you her wish, resigned but hopeful, breaks your heart every time you think about it.
âOf course,â you say. Itâs a relief that heâs not upset about anything you said. âIs she doing okay?â
âOh, yeah. Being her usual self. I didnât tell her you were coming, so sheâll be excited.â The way you smile at the idea of making her happy is something heâs grown to adore about you.
You make your way to the shoreline, and as expected, Ella squeals when she sees you, running straight for you. You crouch to hug her tightly, thrilled that you were invited today.
You sit on a line of towels with Zach and his parents and his sister while Ella explains to you what kind of sandcastle she wants to make. You make conversation with everyone over the soothing sounds of the waves crashing against the shore and eventually, you point out a small rubber ball by the cooler.
âYou wanna play soccer?â you ask Ella.
âIâm not good at it,â she replies.
âYou have the best coach right here,â you say, pointing to Zach. âLetâs give it a try. Maybe we can all work together to score a goal against your dad.â
Zach smiles in surprise when Ella actually agrees. You help him create a makeshift goal line with pebbles and shells as Ella kicks the ball over the sand with her grandparents and aunt. After you set up, you join Ella while Zach makes an exaggerated show of stretching.
âIs that how you always warm up?â you ask him.
âIs there something wrong with it?â he answers. Ella laughs as he dramatically stretches. By now, you can tell by the type of dad he is that he was always on the playful side.
Ella imitates his stretching, then determination flashes over her face and she darts forward to try to kick the ball past him without warning. Zach pretends to be too slow to react, reaching after the ball has already whizzed past him, and lets out a defeated groan.
He picks his daughter up as she jumps in victory, jokingly demanding she tell him when she got so good at soccer. You smile as you watch them share a moment of joy in the sun.
âElla, would you ever want to go to one of your dadâs games?â you offer.
âYeah!â she exclaims.
âYeah?â Zach says. âWhy donât you say yeah whenever I ask?â
âJust take the win, Zach,â you say with a laugh. He grins, loving the way his name sounds when it comes from you.
You enjoy the rest of the afternoon, talking with Zachâs family, playing with Ella, catching glances at Zach when heâs not looking. They invite you to dinner, but you politely decline, figuring you should give them time alone. You thank them for the fun and go home feeling lighter than you did when you woke up.
That evening, as Connie helps Zach clean up after dinner, she mentions how good you are for Ella. He glances down at his mom as she hands him a rinsed plate to put in the dishwasher.
âShe really is,â Zach agrees.
âI think sheâs good for you, too,â she says with a hint of a smile.
âReal subtle, Mom,â he chuckles nervously. âItâs not like that.â
âAlright,â she says with an unconvinced tone. She takes a beat. âI just need to sayââ
âOf course you do,â he mumbles with an amused smirk.
ââthat I havenât seen you this happy in a long time,â she speaks over him. âI havenât seen you be you. But you are again, especially when sheâs around. Itâs just nice to see you smiling so much again. I know things have been tough for you.â
Zachâs teeth dig into his bottom lip. His mom is right; things have been tough, even before Jade left. He desperately wanted companionship, to at least come home to someone he could call a friend, but Jade couldnât give him what he needed. He hasnât felt full of life in a long time. Not until you knocked on his door.
âIâm better now,â he says.
Connie nods, sadness filling her features as she pulls Zach in for a side-hug.
âHey, Iâm alright,â he consoles her. âDon't worry about me.â
âYouâre a parent. You should know the worrying never stops.â She pulls back. âSo, youâre really going to deny it? I see the way you look at her.â
Zach shakes his head with an exaggerated scoff.
âYouâre relentless,â he jokes.
âYou used to tell me everything.â
âThereâs nothing to tell.â
âAlright,â she sighs. âShe looks at you the same way, you know.â
âMom.â
Connie laughs and hands him another plate. He knows that the idea of you looking at him the way he looks at you wonât leave his mind any time soon.

out of my league | pedri gonzalez
đ synopsis: You got into college hoping to reinvent yourself, to leave the âloserâ label behind. But months in and nothingâs changed â then you see him. Pedri GonzĂĄlez, the guy who couldnât be more out of your reach. Youâre sure heâll never notice you, but maybe, just maybe, you two have more in common than you realized. And maybe, just maybe, heâs been looking your way too. tags:Â self-doubt, nerd and jock trope, love triangle, you're not like other girls, mutual pining. (written in 2nd person but no mention of yn) | (around 3.8k words) | (and, yes, i made i playlist for a one shot, here you go)
part 1
You walk into the lecture hall, shifting your weight from foot to foot, clutching your bag strap tightly. Students swarm in around you, talking, familiar voices calling out to each other, laughter echoing off the walls. You scan the seats, looking for an empty spot â but, more importantly, looking for an empty spot where it might be easy to casually say hi to someone, where you might manage to start up a conversation without feeling like youâre forcing it.
No luck. Everyone else seems to have a seat next to someone they know, pairs and small groups filling up rows, bags and books claiming seats before you get a chance to. Finally, you slip into a seat near the back, opening your notebook and hoping that, if nothing else, maybe the professor will start early and save you from the heavy silence between you and everyone else around.
Class begins, and you make yourself busy with notes, trying to ignore how easily the others settle in. You catch part of the conversations: plans to go out, complaining about an exam, and one girl a few seats over talking about her internship in a confident voice that makes you feel smaller somehow.Â
Itâs silly, childish even, to still be waiting for something to change, still half-hoping someone might come along and say, âHey, you look like youâre new here,â or âWeâre grabbing coffee after this, wanna join?â But you know better â things like that wonât happen for you. So, after class, you head to the cafĂŠ down the street, at least there you can sit alone in peace.
As you order your coffee, you try to shake off the familiar feeling of disappointment, reminding yourself that college isnât some high school movie where everything magically falls into place. Itâll come with time, you tell yourself.
You take your coffee to a small table near the window, trying to focus on the hum of conversation around you rather than your own thoughts. Then, out of nowhere, you notice him.
Pedri.
Youâve seen him before, of course. His face practically wallpapered half the universityâs Instagram page. Pedri GonzĂĄlez, the football prodigy, popular on campus with that effortless charm. Today, heâs leaning against a counter, his order in hand, scrolling through his phone. Heâs so close you almost look away instinctively, but something keeps your eyes on him â maybe the way he seems so at ease, so comfortable in a way you canât seem to find for yourself.
And just as you think that, he glances up, catching your eye. A flicker of recognition crosses his face, and for a split second, you swear thereâs something like a smile directed right at you.
You suddenly hear a voice from behind â high-pitched, bubbly, and unmistakably familiar. Melanie, his influencer girlfriend with the flawless face and perfect body, skips up to Pedri with such an enthusiasm that it makes your stomach twist.
âPedri!â she squeals, throwing her arms around his neck. He looks a bit startled at first, but then his expression softens, and he wraps an arm around her, shifting his coffee to avoid spilling it. âIâm holding coffee,â he laughs, his voice low and easy. âCalm down.â
She pouts, tugging at his sleeve in an exaggerated, cutesy way, her voice taking on a pitch that gets on your nerves. âYou didnât wait for me!â she says, drawing out the words with a look of playful hurt. Her expression is almost too perfect, like sheâs used to performing for an audience â and for all you know, she might be.
Pedri just shakes his head, still smiling. âAlright, alright, next time Iâll wait,â he says, clearly charmed. That gentle look in his eyes makes your heart sink. Here he is, so warm and patient with her, someone who seems worlds apart from you.
You look down at your coffee, suddenly feeling invisible again. You decide to make your way to the door, head down, hoping to slip out of the cafĂŠ without a second look from anyone. It shouldn't be too difficult. But in your haste, your bag catches on the edge of a chair, and you feel a sting as something sharp nicks your finger. You wince, glancing at the tiny cut forming on the tip of your finger, and thatâs when you hear her voice again.
âOh my god, are you okay, honey?â Melanieâs voice rings out, unexpectedly dripping with concern. You look up, realizing that sheâs talking to you.
âOh! Uh, yeah, yes,â you stammer, raising your hand to show her the barely-there cut. âIt was just⌠a tiny cut. Really, itâs nothing. But thanks for asking.â
Pedriâs face shifts from curious to concerned as he sets his coffee down and digs around in his pocket. âHey, hey,â he says as he pulls out a small band-aid and holds it up with a smile. âDonât worry, I got you.â
He comes closer and carefully grabs your injured finger. His hands are warm, and heâs so close that you can smell the faint hint of his cologne. Your cheeks feel like theyâre on fire. You try not to make eye contact, so you look up at Melanie instead â only to find her lips pressed into a tight line, her eyes narrowed. She looks absolutely furious.
You pull your hand back as soon as he finishes, tucking it away like itâs something you shouldnât have shared. Your heart is pounding, and for reasons you canât quite understand, you feel a knot of nerves in your stomach.
âUmm, thanks,â you say, glancing from Pedri to Melanie and back again. âI⌠yeah, okay. Well, bye then.â
Without waiting for either of them to respond, you spin on your heel and head for the door, practically stumbling over yourself in your rush to leave.Â
part 2
It happens one afternoon when youâre at the library, tucked away in a corner, lost in your notes. Youâre not really expecting anything â itâs just a quiet day like any other. Youâve been at it for hours, and itâs one of those days where everything feels like itâs blurring together â but you need to keep going. Finals are coming up, and organic chemistry isnât about to let you off easy.
In front of you, a group of students has taken up a whole table, their textbooks and notebooks sprawled across the surface. Youâre aware of a little rustling, some light laughter, then whispers that rise just enough for you to catch a few words.
âJust ask her!â one of them says, and you notice a nudge from one person to the next, like a gentle push to do something. You ignore it, but then, after a pause, you hear a voice close by.
âHey.â
You glance up, slightly startled, and thereâs Alexia standing next to you. You recognize her from thermodynamics â sheâs that person who always seems to understand things when the rest of you is lost. You didnât think sheâd remember you, let alone approach you.
âOh, hi,â you manage, trying not to sound as surprised as you feel.
âWeâre, uh, actually about to grab lunch,â she says, gesturing to the group sitting around the table. âAnd⌠well, we were wondering if you wanted to come with us?â
You look over and realize that the rest of the group is watching with interest.Â
âOh⌠sure, that sounds nice,â you say.
The next thing you know, youâre sitting in a little restaurant, the sound of salsa music filling the air and the table scattered with plates of tacos, chips, and guacamole. Youâre squeezing around a table just big enough for the six of you.
âSo, did anyone actually get the last question on the problem set?â Diego asks, looking around the table.
âDonât even talk to me about that one,â Ana groans, reaching for a chip. âTheyâre just trying to mess with us. Like, sure, a totally realistic scenario in the real world, right?â
Arthur smirks, shaking his head. âWeak. I got it. Want me to explain?â
âOh, please, Mr. I-Got-It-On-The-Fifth-Try,â AndrĂŠs scoffs. âDonât act like you didnât guess half of it.â
Laughter rises around the table, and you catch Alexia rolling her eyes at Arthur. âHe totally guessed,â she whispers, leaning in, and you smile, realizing youâre laughing too, genuinely. Thereâs no awkwardness, no need to carefully plan out every word.
Then Alexia groans beside you, rolling her eyes. "Ugh, the most annoying people on campus just walked in."
You follow her gaze and spot Pedri and his friends entering the restaurant, laughing loudly and drawing attention, moving with confidence.
"Oh, do you mean the most famous?" Ana teases, which sets off a laughter around the table. Theyâre clearly all in on the joke, sharing knowing glances.
You feel your cheeks warm, trying to hide that you're blushing. Just a few hours ago, the thought of being in that group had felt like the ultimate goal, some idealized version of what college life should be. Youâd thought everything would change, that youâd somehow become a different person overnight. Now, you look at them again, at their loud voices and carefree attitude, and something about it feels... less shiny. Less like what you actually need.
This time, he doesnât look at you. Pedri and his friends settle at a table on the other side of the restaurant. Itâs strange â youâre both here, sharing the same space, yet you might as well be in different worlds.
For the first time, it doesnât bother you. Thereâs a quiet satisfaction in knowing that you donât need to be over there, part of his world, to feel like you belong. You turn back to your own table, the conversation picks up right where it left off, and you dive back in, laughing along, feeling more settled than you ever imagined you would.
part 3
Youâre standing in Ana and Alexiaâs tiny dorm room, surrounded by piles of clothes, makeup scattered across every available surface. Alexiaâs leaning in close, brushing eyeshadow onto your eyelids while Ana adjusts the straps of her dress on your shoulders. The room feels so cramped, and your pulse is racing â this party is supposed to be huge, half the campus will be there, and just thinking about it makes you feel like youâre looking down the edge of a cliff. Your palms are clammy, and every now and then, you catch yourself wondering if maybe you should back out.
When Alexia pulls away to get a good look, you finally muster up the courage to ask, "Do I look... pretty?" The words come out quieter than you intended.
Alexia squints at you, considering. "What? Yeah, of course! MaybeâŚâ She leans closer, tapping her chin, âmaybe just take your glasses off."
Ana reaches over, carefully slipping them off, and both of them stare at you. Your heart skips a beat. Why did they pause like that? Why havenât they said anything?
âActually, you know what,â Ana says, laughing as she slides your glasses back on. âLetâs keep them on.â
Your stomach drops, and you immediately start overthinking. Does that mean you look⌠weird without them? That the glasses are hiding something? Youâre seconds away from spiraling when Ana laughs again, picking up on your panic.
âNo, no, itâs not that! Really!â she says, putting a reassuring hand on your shoulder. âI just think the glasses suit you. They make you look like⌠you, you know?â
You take a breath, looking at yourself in the mirror. âSometimes, I feel like people donât even look at my face,â you say quietly, almost more to yourself than to them. âLike⌠am I ugly or something? Just be honest.â
Alexia shakes her head, leaning in with a smirk. âThe problem is not that youâre ugly. Because listen â youâre not.â She tries to keep a straight face but canât hold back a grin. âItâs just⌠you have this really scary resting face. Honestly, it took us months to gather up the courage to talk to you. You looked like a total psycho!â
Your jaw drops, and then Ana starts giggling, and before you know it, all three of you are laughing so hard youâre practically gasping for air.
By the time you and your friends arrive, the place is buzzing â every corner packed with groups chatting, laughing, flirting, leaning close in half-drunken conversations, snapping selfies that will likely look more like a blur tomorrow. It's surreal, looking out over the room and recognizing faces â people you've seen day after day in the library or sitting across from you in classes.
You glance over at Alexia, whoâs already chatting with Ana, while Diego and AndrĂŠs are joking around, nudging each other, making it look like theyâve been friends for years. It feels good â safe, even â knowing you're with people who know your quirks and still want you here.
For a second, you catch sight of Pedri and his friends across the room. Theyâre their own universe, laughing, leaning back casually against the wall, looking like they know everyone and everything.
The music grows louder, bass pulsing through the floor, and after a few songs and a couple of drinks, the air feels thick, almost stifling. You slip out onto the balcony, breathing in the cool night air, grateful for the silence.
A few moments later, you hear footsteps. When you turn, Pedri is standing there, leaning against the doorframe with that familiar half-smile.
âHey! Finger-cut girl! Escaping too?â he says, nodding back toward the chaos inside.
You laugh, rolling your eyes. âYeah, needed a break. Itâs⌠intense in there.â
He steps forward, looking out over the city lights beyond. âItâs kind of crazy, all this,â he says, gesturing toward the noise and chaos inside. âSometimes I just want to get away for a while, you know?â
You blink, caught off guard by the depth of his words. Youâre both a bit tipsy, sure, but it doesnât feel like enough to explain why heâs opening up like this to you. Itâs almost⌠intentional.
You want to keep the conversation going, to say something meaningful back. Tonight, youâre really trying to be friendly, trying to bridge that gap that always feels so hard to cross. But itâs not easy for you. Itâs like something physically tightens in your chest whenever youâre around people â every word feels like youâre tiptoeing on the edge of saying too much.
Still, you take a breath, gathering the nerve to open up, even if itâs just a little. âI get it,â you say, surprised at how steady your voice sounds. âSometimes it feels like everythingâs moving too fast, and youâre just⌠stuck, trying to catch up.â
He looks at you like heâs really hearing what youâre saying. His expression softens, and the usual cockiness in his eyes is replaced with something quieter.
He agrees, âExactly.â
For a moment, you both stand there, the noise and music from inside a distant hum. Then he leans on the railing beside you.
âYou look different tonight,â he says, his voice lower, almost as if heâs sharing a secret. âGood different.â
You roll your eyes, trying to hide how much his words make you blush. âItâs just makeup and a nice dress.â
He shakes his head, his eyes still on you. âNo, itâs more than that. You look⌠happy.â
Youâre not sure how to respond, caught between laughing it off and letting his words sink in. You look up, meeting his gaze, and suddenly the closeness between you feels electric. His eyes flicker from your face to your lips, and for a heartbeat, youâre frozen, feeling that rush of anticipation.
Thereâs a pause as you both just look at each other, and in the dim light, you notice something unexpected â heâs actually nervous. The way he glances down at his hands, how he shifts slightly, like heâs unsure of himself.
Your heartbeat picks up as he leans in, his breath warm against your cheek. When his lips finally meet yours, itâs gentle at first, tentative, like heâs testing the waters, waiting to see if youâll pull away. But you donât. Instead, you let yourself sink into it.
Just as youâre starting to forget where you are, his hand slides down your back, fingers trailing lower, and itâs like a switch flips. You pull back, reality rushing back in as you catch your breath, and he looks at you, confused.
You look down, noticing your lipstick, or, well, Alexiaâs lipstick smudged on his lips, âYou have a girlfriend,â you say, your voice a mix of anger and disbelief. âWhy would you do this?â
He hesitates. âI donât. Not anymore.â
âSince when?â
âUhmm⌠listen, weâre about to break up. Any day now. Iâm just trying to find the right time.â
âOh my god,â you groan, stepping back.
He sighs, like he knows how this sounds. âShe kisses other guys too, itâs fine, we have an open relationship.â
You fold your arms, skeptical. âOkay⌠maybe start with that next time. I still donât feel like I can trust you, and Iâm pretty sure she hates me. Either way, I donât want any drama.â
Pedri laughs, trying to look nonchalant. âDrama? Me? Iâm the chillest. Thereâs no drama with me.â
You raise an eyebrow. âYou just told me youâre in the middle of breaking up, and I donât even know what that means.â
He rubs the back of his neck, sheepish. âOkay, okay, I get it. Sorry. I wasnât thinking.â
âWell, I like thinking,â you say, your voice sharper than you intended. âYou should try it. Itâs really good â it lowers your chances of hurting people.â
Pedri opens his mouth, maybe to defend himself, but instead, he just nods, an apology in his eyes. And though you can see that part of him wants to win you over, thereâs a quiet recognition there too. He knows he messed up. The music shifts, someone calls your name, and before either of you can say anything more, you turn and walk back into the noise, leaving him standing there.
part 4
Itâs a random Tuesday when you find yourself in a situation straight out of a cheap comedy. Youâre just minding your business, walking back to your dorm with an armful of snacks you impulsively bought after a long day of exams. But right as you turn the corner of the hallway, your foot catches on a loose bit of carpet. In an effort to keep from falling, you stumble forward, dropping your snacks everywhere â chips and candy scattering across the floor like confetti.
As you scramble to gather everything, trying not to laugh at your own clumsiness, you realize youâre not alone. Just around the corner, you hear voices. You freeze, quickly recognizing one of them as Pedriâs. And the other... Melanie.
You lean down, staying out of sight and pretending to reach for a stray bag of chips, hoping to avoid drawing attention. But as their conversation grows louder, your curiosity gets the best of you.
âYou donât understand,â Melanieâs voice is strained, dripping with frustration. âWe have something big, something real. Weâre building a future here!â
Pedri sighs, his tone more tired than angry. âBe honest with me â are you even still in love with me?â
Thereâs a beat of silence, followed by her dismissive laugh. âThis is bigger than some little crush, Pedri. We have stability. What kind of future do you have with her? You two have absolutely nothing in common!â
You bite your lip, cheeks heating up. Could they be talking about you? Youâd get up and leave if you didnât feel like youâd definitely be noticed now. Youâre basically a hostage in your own hallway.
Pedriâs voice grows firmer. âThis isnât about her. Itâs about us, Mel.â
She scoffs, and you can practically hear her rolling her eyes. âYou two arenât going to last a month. Just wait. Youâll come crawling back to me.â
At that, she storms off, heels clicking sharply. Pedri steps out from behind the corner a moment later and catches sight of you sitting there, wide-eyed and completely flustered, with a bag of chips crushed in your hand. Thereâs a split second of mutual shock before he bursts out laughing.
âOh god,â you mumble, utterly mortified as you scramble to stand. âI swear I wasnât eavesdropping. I⌠I was just⌠my snacksâŚâ
Pedri grins, shaking his head. âYou know, I think this might be the best thing thatâs happened all day.â
He holds out his hand to help you up. âNeed a hand with that?â
You take his hand, still flustered but grateful. As he helps you gather up the rest of your snacks, you both start walking down the hallway toward your dorm room. It feels easy â surprisingly comfortable, considering the circumstances. The small talk flows without much effort, and Pedri seems genuinely happy to be talking to you.
âSo, whatâs your course again?â he asks, glancing over at you with that warm smile that makes you a little nervous.
âIâm studying chemical engineering,â you say, trying to sound confident, even though youâre still a bit flustered from your earlier clumsiness.Â
Pedri raises an eyebrow, clearly surprised. âOh, so youâre smart, smart, huh?â he says with a grin. âI didnât take you for a genius.â
You laugh, a bit shy but glad heâs not being too serious. âWell, Iâm smart in the sense that I know how to memorize a bunch of formulas. I wouldnât call it genius-level.â
He chuckles, clearly impressed. âI donât know. Sounds pretty smart to me.â
You shrug, glancing at the floor. âWell, I know, it sounds super boring, but I kind of like it. I guess Iâm just really into figuring out how stuff works.â
Pedri looks amused. âSo youâre, like, a chemical wizard, huh?â
âSomething like that,â you joke, trying to downplay it.
"So..." Pedri seems to want to start a serious conversation, looking at you with a slightly hesitant expression. "About what you heard... and about the kiss..."
You immediately shake your head, feeling your heart race. "We don't have to talk about any of it. Really."
Pedri pauses, confusion flickering on his face, as if heâs hurt by your response. "Are you sure?"
You look at him, trying to keep a straight face. "I have social anxiety."
He stares at you for a moment. "You seem fine talking to me."
You sigh dramatically, though you canât quite hide the smile tugging at your lips. "I'm freaking out inside, trust me."
"That's okay," he says, his tone softening. "Alright, then maybe we can talk about other stuff? Maybe I can walk you to your room again some other times? What about that?"
You think for a second, still a little unsure but feeling the warmth of his easy-going demeanor. "Umm... yeah. Other stuff sounds nice. Walking sounds... okay."
Pedri raises an eyebrow, clearly teasing now but with a playful glint in his eye. "Can you handle walking and talking?"
You pause for a beat, then nod with a little more confidence than you actually feel. "I can handle!"

When deciding who to work for there is a sliding scale of employers that goes from lil mom and pop shops up to corporate monoliths. I have worked at both ends of the spectrum and I can pretty definitively say that tiny businesses are hands down the most insane employers.
The sweet spot is a place that has like 10-20 stores; thatâs the best possible work environment. Theyâll be polished enough to have protocols that make work structured, but not so bogged down with bureaucracy that nothing can ever get done.
This story is not from that sweet spot. This story is from my time working at Oil and Vinegar. Now, like many little franchise stores, the idea was solid. There was on tap imported olive oil and vinegar and it was really delicious. Top shelf. Unfortunately, each location was like the Wild West because owners varied wildly.
My owner was the human embodiment of Mr. Krabbs. His eyes were just constant dollar signs. Throughout my training he informed me of the price of every single piece of equipment I touched and how much it cost to replace it.
He had cameras set up to watch us, and an app on his phone to access the live feed. Heâd call us to ask what we were doing when heâd just checked a camera to make sure we were being honest.
Now, the trouble was he had two locations. His location further south did amazing. It was way more centrally located and got three times the foot traffic. The one I worked in was in the snottiest mall possible in Arizona and consequently the rent was through the roof.
It was not going well for my store. We didnât get as much traffic, so there was only so much I could do in a day. I could dust, sweep, and wait for customers. I read a lot and was frank when he called to interrogate me. I always asked for additional tasks but he never had any. What could I do to prop up a failing business?
But this man was convinced there was some Secret Reason that the store I was in was doing worse. He crunched numbers, looked at staff, and eventually hit upon the most insane possible solution.
We used too much toilet paper.
We were probably stealing toilet paper! Bleeding him dry one single ply square at a time! How dare we need to use the bathroom?! His south location used half as much toilet paper as we did, we must be thieving little monsters!!!!
Friends. The south location was populated entirely by men. My location had three people on staff who had to sit to pee. It was so blindly transparently the source of the discrepancy but this man was convinced we were making off with toilet paper to bankrupt him.
So he implemented what he believed to be an entirely reasonable response to this base treachery. We were allowed to have one roll of toilet paper. At any given time, one roll was permitted to us. This was so transparently unhinged that we protested but he insisted. If we were low on toilet paper we needed to call him to drop off a roll that he brought from his home. Smiling jovially, he assured us he lived so close by that it would be no problem!
When we needed to call him often for more he started tearing his hair out. What were we using toilet paper for?! Why wasnât his genius plan to stop our scandalous waste working??!
Finally, the manager, the only man on staff had to pull the owner aside and be like, âLook, man, their bladders are smaller. They need to wipe every time they pee. They need to pee even more on their period. Is this really the hill you want to die on?â
Yes. It was. The manager was fired unrelated reasons and denounced as a traitor. The toilet paper ration lasted until I quit and probably until the store closed six months later.

namesake mcmansion
Howdy folks! Today's McMansion is very special because a) we're returning to Maryland after a long time and b) because the street this McMansion is on is the same as my name. (It was not named after me.) Hence, it is my personal McMansion, which I guess is somewhat like when people used to by the name rights to stars even though it was pretty much a scam. (Shout out btw to my patron Andros who submitted this house to be roasted live on the McMansion Hell Patreon Livestream)
As far as namesake McMansions go, this one is pretty good in the sense that it is high up there on the ol' McMansion scale. Built in 2011, this psuedo-Georgian bad boy boasts 6 bedrooms and 9.5 baths, all totaling around 12,000 square feet. It'll run you 2.5 million which, safe to say, is exponentially larger than its namesake's net worth.
Now, 2011 was an anonymous year for home design, lingering in the dead period between the 2008 black hole and 2013 when the market started to actually, finally, steadily recover. As a result a lot of houses from this time basically look like 2000s McMansions but slightly less outrageous in order to quell recession-era shame.
I'm going to be so serious here and say that the crown molding in this room is a crime against architecture, a crime against what humankind is able to accomplish with mass produced millwork, and also a general affront to common sense. I hate it so much that the more I look at it the more angry I become and that's really not healthy for me so, moving on.
Actually, aside from the fake 2010s distressed polyester rug the rest of this room is literally, basically Windows 98 themed.
I feel like the era of massive, hefty sets of coordinated furniture are over. However, we're the one's actually missing out by not wanting this stuff because we will never see furniture made with real wood instead of various shades of MDF or particleboard ever again.
This is a top 10 on the scale of "least logical kitchen I've ever seen." It's as though the designers engineered this kitchen so that whoever's cooking has to take the most steps humanly possible.
Do you ever see a window configuration so obviously made up by window companies in the 1980s that you almost have to hand it to them? You're literally letting all that warmth from the fire just disappear. But whatever I guess it's fine since we basically just LARP fire now.
Feminism win because women's spaces are prioritized in a shared area or feminism loss because this is basically the bathroom vanity version of women be shopping? (It's the latter.)
I couldn't get to all of this house because there were literally over a hundred photos in the listing but there are so many spaces in here that are basically just half-empty voids, and if not that then actually, literally unfinished. It's giving recession. Anyway, now for the best part:
Not only is this the NBA Backrooms but it's also just a nonsensical basketball court. Tile floors? No lines? Just free balling in the void?
Oh, well I bet the rear exterior is totally normal.
Not to be all sincere about it but much like yours truly who has waited until the literal last second to post this McMansion, this house really is the epitome of hubris all around. Except the house's hubris is specific to this moment in time, a time when gas was like $2/gallon. It's climate hubris. It's a testimony to just how much energy the top 1% of income earners make compared to the rest of us. I have a single window unit. This house has four air conditioning condensers. That's before we get to the monoculture, pesticide-dependent lawn or the three car garage or the asphalt driveway or the roof that'll cost almost as much as the house to replace. We really did think it would all be endless. Oops.
If you like this post and want more like it, support McMansion Hell on Patreon for as little as $1/month for access to great bonus content including a discord server, extra posts, and livestreams.
Not into recurring payments? Try the tip jar! Student loans just started back up!

A dutyâ Capitano
Synopsis: You were set to marry a fatui... Wait, is that a fucking harbinger?!
Wc: 3.3k
Warning(s): fem reader for this one, reader gets called "wife", Capitano is described to have dark blue eyes (i swear i did my research and they said yes to dark blue eyes), MDNI masturbation but no sex between them.
Notes: don't ask the reason why you are in an arranged marriage, my brain is fried. You can come up with your own reasons ! Wrote this with my eyes cursing at me to sleep so half not proofread. Part 2 is out here. Part 3 is out here!
Tick tock.
You watched as the clock ticked louder than usual, cringing to yourself when the sound became unpleasant to you, it was ringing in your ears.
Even the fatui around you were like statue's, you considered for a minute to check if they were even alive and breathing.
The door then swinged opened, everyone's head suddenly lowering slightly which made you even more confused, but you mimicked their gestures nonetheless for respect.
Heavy footsteps echoed in the room, the sound only getting louder and heavier the closer it got you.
The steps finally stopped, and your glance up to see a bigâno, giant man standing right infront of you. He seemed to be wearing a helmet to cover his face, long black hair that protrutes from the back of his helmet and over his shoulders, and the big coat that was full of fur draped around his shoulders.
You must say, he went all out with his appearance as a fatui.
"Are you perhaps..." You started, breaking the silence that hung think in the air, "... The person who I'm arranged to marry?" You finish off, tilting your head curiously.
He doesn't answer immediately, rather, he looks down at you, observing your features which makes you wipe your sweaty hands to your sides.
"Il Capitano," he finally spoke, a raspy voice, you noted. Capitano extended his arm out for you, and you willingly accepted it, giving it a gentle shake.
"Member of the fatui Harbingers."
His next words made your hand freeze. Did he just say Harbinger? Not even a normal fatui like you thought, but a whole harbinger. Standing right before you, and shaking your hand.
Well you were screwed because what the hell have you gotten yourself into.
You both were quiet now, staring at eachother that it's becoming almost painfully awkward.
"Your name?" He asks, letting your hand go and it's like you were snapped back to reality when you immediately blurt out your name.
He repeats your name like you were on his kill-off list, but that was just overthinking on your part.
"I'd like your company from now on." He announced, stepping a tad closer to you which made you hold in your breath.
"then i shall be at your company..." Giving him your best small smile, you bowed your head again.
â˘â˘â˘
Your wedding basically consisted of a witness and marriage papers that needed your signature. You didn't even get the chance to wear a traditional wedding dress nor have a honeymoon, which you don't think is necessary for now since everything was going too fast for your liking.
And Marina, your new personal maid, has become your new friend in this big estate of Capitano's, teaching you everything you must and mustn't do. Kind of like a 101 guide on how to be a wife.
Ever since that day a two months ago, you have not done anything but cause trouble.
You wanted to go out? Well you need your husband's permission. You want to eat something? Ask Marina first and she'll whip it for you no problem, and no you're not allowed to cook by yourself. You bombarded Capitano with questions about himself, but his answers wouldn't be enough as they were about a word or a sentence long.
As boring as that is, this is your life now for... Archons know how long. But you remember it being temporary, if your memory did not fail you.
Capitano had returned back to the estate for the night, and for the first time, you greeted him at the front door with a smile, wishing you could see him smile back at you.
"My lord," you bow elegantly like how Marina taught you, speaking even softly like nothing ever happened a week ago, the fit you remember throwing at him, demanding an answer on why you couldn't do anything around.
The silence in the hallways was deafening, broken only by the clanking of his armor as he took a step closer to you, his towering figure cast an intimidating shadow upon you. "It is rare," he spoke in a blunt tone, "to see you this obedient." Capitano paused, his gaze scrutinizing your every move. "You have been behaving recently?"
You couldn't help but fidget with the hem of your clothes nervously like you have been caught, a nervous quiet laugh escaping your lips, "i believe I've always behaved."
Capitano let out a terse sigh at your answer, his eyes unflinching through the slits of his helmet. "To your luck," he muttered, "you have been... tolerable." The word 'tolerable' hung heavily in the air, making it clear that it was the most positive adjective he could summon about you.
"However," he added after a few moments, "you seem more compliant than usual today. This is an... interesting change." His tone was questioning, as if hinting that he was wary of your compliance, expecting a hidden scheme behind it.
"Shall we have dinner?" You change the topic, changing your position to stand by his side so that both of you could walk to the dining room together. Capitano nods curtly, acknowledging your suggestion. He allows you to approach, though there is a stiffness in his movements as he lets you stand by his side.
The two of you begin walking to the dining room, your husband's steps were heavy, and it was evident that he was still in his full armor, the sound of his footsteps filling the hall.
"You are not usually the one to suggest dinner," he commented, "I thought today was nice... Despite how i always fight you, forgive me." you mumble apologetically.
You become quiet when he doesn't answer back, your hands clasped infront of you instead.
You both soon reached the dining hall, now sat opposite eachother on the dining table, Capitano's gaze remained fixed upon you as you both sat across each other, the coldness in his eyes didn't waver as he observed you intently. The silence seemed to thicken as the only sound in the room was the clinking of silverware against the ceramic dinnerware.
"How was your trip?" You asked casually while stuffing some veggies in your mouth.
"The trip was... uneventful," he replied tersely, pausing briefly before continuing. "The usual Fatui business, nothing that concerns you, wife." His words were as biting as ever, indicating that he wasn't keen on discussing his business matters with you.
"nofing mfun?" You ask again with your mouth too full this time, "don't speak with your mouth full of food." You swallow your food down when you caught a glimpse of disappointment in his tone, maybe he was even frowning if you could see him behind his helmet.
"i will retire to my chambers after this," you place down the silverware on the tablecloth to reach for the glass of water next to you. Capitano doesn't answer, but he nods slowly in return.
â˘â˘â˘
The world was still and the moon illuminated the grounds outside, casting a soft glow upon the landscape. You could hear the occasional sound of crickets and the whispered rustle of leaves, creating a peaceful atmosphere inside the expansive estate.
The minutes ticked by slowly, each one seemingly longer than the last as you anticipated Capitano's return this time. You fidgeted with the sheets, as you waited, you recalled Marina's words, a distant memory echoing in your head, "It is custom for a wife to wait for her husband to return before she retires to bed." You never did that, no. You would always sleep before he did and he would always wake up before you did. It was rare to even see him on your side of the bed, only sometimes when you would wake up from a sudden heavy weight shifting next to you.
Despite being married for quite some time, the connection between you two was still distant and cold. Capitano didn't seem to care for you on any emotional level, instead seeing you as a mere accessory to his life as a mighty Capitano of the Fatui Harbingers. A possession rather than a wife, you thought.
Capitano's steps echoed through the room as he stepped into your bedroom, his footsteps heavy and deliberate. He closed the door behind him with a thump, shutting out the outside world and isolating the two of you in the room.
He observed you quietly for a moment, "You're not in bed yet?"
"i was waiting for you."
"And why, pray tell, were you waiting for me?" he asked, crossing his arms over his chest. "Marina..." You mumble, standing up from the bed while looking away in a bit of embarrassment, "she taught me it was custom for a wife to wait for her husband."
Capitano seemed even more surprised upon hearing your answer, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Marina... I see," he said slowly, of her name sending a ripple of irritation through him. Capitano disliked Marina's influence on you and how she seethe mentioned to be teaching you things.
He strode closer to you, by now you were used to his presence that it would not make you involuntary step back, you instead wait for his next move.
Lifting his hand to take a few strands of your hair was the last thing you expected. The strands resting on his hand as he lifted it closer to his helmet, almost like a gesture of kissing your hair which made you blink rapidly.
"You don't have to," he whispered, his thumb gently caressing the strands, "don't have to listen to Marina or anyone. You may do your own thing in this estate. I just want you well taken care of and safe."
You think you may have just fallen in love with the man because... Why is your heart beating so fast that it could explode? Or wait, can he hear it?
Capitano then let go of your hair, walking past you as he started loosening the straps of his armor, "it is late," he muttered with a rasp, his hands working quickly to remove his armor. The sound of armor being unthreaded echoed through the room, punctuated by the clinks of metal.
Taking off his helmet next so casually made your eyebrows furrow and sit back on the bed with your head tilted to get a closer look at him.
His eyes were glowing dark blue, the most beautiful shade of blue you think you've ever seen. The prettiest face too despite his dark and intimidating aura.
"you're beautiful." You whispered in awe, though Capitano, who was half-way through removing his armor, paused for a moment as he heard your words. He wasn't expecting such a compliment from you. It was rare for you to praise him, preferring to defy him more often than not.
"Beautiful?" he repeated, his voice gruff, you noticed his expressions and tried to act cool, your fingers nervously scratching your neck out of habit when you get shy.
"You're beautiful too, my wife." This completely caught you off gaurd, but it doesn't stop you from smiling and laughing it off quietly.
"Goodnight." Your head rests on the pillow, and this time you face him in your sleep, and he makes the effort to mimick your gestures.
"Goodnight."
â˘â˘â˘
"Marina, where is my wife?" That was the first thing he asked your personal maid the moment he arrived back from his mission. His head looking around rather than looking down directly at Marina.
"The lady should be at her chambers."
"She's not."
"What?" Poor Marina's eyes widened, she was sure she just gave you a basket of fruits and snacks in your room, even asking you if you needed anything else.
"... Forgive me, my lord. She's probably in the batâ"
"She's not in the bathroom." He replied in a low, dangerous tone that sent a shiver down her spine.
Where are you, my lady? Marinas thought through gritted teeth before exhaling out shakily, "i shall go find her at once." Marina began looking around every corner of the estate, and each room she opened without you in it, she would lose two years of her life with Capitano following her.
You couldn't have escaped, right?
Finally when she hurriedly went to the back of the estate, she let out a sigh of relief when she saw you sitting outside on the grass with the basket of goods she handed you earlier.
You wave your hands and both Capitano and Marina with a bright smile, causing his shoulders to relax when you were at last seen having fun by yourself.
"you're going to get me killed one day." Marina mouthed at you, but since there was some distance between you both, you just smiled and shrugged at her.
Capitano approached you slowly, his purposeful stride carrying him towards you with measured steps. You were perched on the grass, happily savoring the treats in your hands, when he suddenly materialized before you. "Sit." You pat the space next to you, to which he obliged without hesitation.
"Have you ever done this before?"
"No."
"Never? It's nice."
"You do seem to be enjoying yourself." He hums thoughtfully, and your smile widens, "The last couple of months have been interesting, and i get to know you better now." You say before popping a blueberry in your mouth to chew on.
"Blueberry?" You offer, raising your hand while holding a blueberry in between your thumb and forefinger.
You might think your husband is shy by how he looks around at first before taking off his helmet, cute. Eventually he leans to take the fruit between his teeth before chewing silently, the slight fruit juice glistening on his lips before his tongue along with his thumb swiped over his lower lip.
"you know," you suddenly speak, drawing your hips near him, "we've never kissed yet."
He pauses, staring at you while thinking deep about it, "does it bother you?"
"No, does the idea bother you?" Your question held a mixture of uncertainty and intrigue.
Without a warning, his hand held your left cheek with gentleness, his lips slotting against yours for three seconds max before it ended.
What?
Your eyes were wide open the whole three seconds of it too!
"What was that?" The horror in your eyes was evident, not because you were scared, but because you were caught off guard and your eyes were fucking open. Capitano, upon seeing your eyes, he immediately tried pulling away, thinking he might've scared you in some way.
But you were quick to hold his wrist firmly so it wouldn't leave your cheek. "I liked it." You blurt out with the reddest cheeks ever, and he's almost amused.
"But it was too fast," you clear your throat before tilting your head closer, "may i, husband?" How can he refuse when you asked so nicely too?
Your lips latch onto his for the second time, and this time, you were going to give him a proper kiss. With your lips moving with ease against his, the sounds of soft smacks of your lips together filling the air which makes the tips of his ears go red.
You don't continue after both of you pull away to catch your breath, your eyes staring deeply into eachother as he pressed his lips into a thin line.
"Let's not do this again," your heart almost drops at his words. Did you mess up again? Did he not like how it feltâ
"In public, i meant. I wouldn't like anyone to see you in such a state."
You can definitely hear the crickets in your head. "So we can continue kissing?"
"Mm," he only hums back before reaching for his helmet to put it back on. "I have to leave, i will be back by midnight," and when he stands up, it was your cue to stand up to bid him goodbye.
"Take care, husband." You wrap you arms around him, and he circles his arms back around you into a tight hug. It was not your first hug together, so you got used to the feeling of not being able to breath for a couple of seconds before of his tight arms around you.
â˘â˘â˘
Capitano expected you to be awake when he returned from a few errands he had to run earlier, expecting you to wait for for him so that both of you could sleep at the same time ever since you did that day.
But you were asleep, peaceful and relaxed on your shared bed. You, wearing nothing but a silky nightgown like you always do, the blanket shuffled messily on you which revealed your legs slightly parted, and your arms hugging the pillow underneath you.
You looked like an angel to him, so vulnerable.. so pretty like thisâgod was he pent up from today.
He hands clenched tightly into fists until his knuckles turned white as he looked away, instead busying himself in taking off his usually neat coat which was now covered in few splatters of crimson red.
The sound of the running water masked his muttering, instantly regretting his thoughtlessness. As he grabbed the bar of soap, he began to wash vigorously, trying to expel the memories of combat and the musky scent of carnage. His body couldn't be gentler with himself though, as he massaged his muscles that ached from the constant strain.
His heartbeat quickened as his mind wandered back to you. You were the sweetest thing in his life, and he would never ever hurt you, in fact, he would rather die than have your precious skin scratched. Or even cutting off the heads without hesitating if one would hurt you.
He hates himself for envisioning your body under his, or thinking about how skilled you would be with your tongue or hands. he thought he was a selfish lustful man for thinking of such thing when you were sound asleep and tired.
Unable to bear it any longer, he reached for himself, stroking slowly at first before heavier thrusts took over all while imagining how it would feel like to be inside your soft and warm cunt instead of his hard and rough fist. The steam from the shower served to muffle his low groans, half in agony, half in ecstasy. Closing his eyes, he pictured your warm smile or shy and embarrassed facial expressions as his release came steadily forth, his forehead hit the cool tiles as he let out a deep, satisfied sigh.
After taking a moment to get himself together, he turned off the water and faced the mirror. How can he go back to bed after jerking off to the thought of your smile and sleeping figure? He would very much rather bang his head on the wall.
But he dried off with a sigh and headed back to bed, trying to keep his eyes half closed with his back turned to you as he sinked down on the mattress, taking a bit of blanket to cover himself with his eyes forced shut.
Your sudden arms that enveloped around him from behind is what gave Capitano a scare. A literal scare to the big man.
Were you awake this whole time? Did you hear him back in the bathroom? Was he too loud?
But your soft snores made his stiff shoulders sag in relief, indicating you were still in deep in your dreams.
He decided to turn around to face you, looking down at how innocent you looked, how the moonlight seemed to glow on your face from the window, giving your features a glowy shine.
"You have ruined me," he whispered carefully while brushing off strands of your hair away from your face to press a goodnight kiss on your forehead. "I am yours, ruin me, break me, and love me as much as you want, my wife."

have super torn through the materials from the $bp, nice to make good progress on some characters though (like march/himeko/yukong and their light cones as I mentioned earlier). also did a ton more work again on evaluating relics. making sure to max out any gold ones that have 2+ needed substats. been trying to be conservative with the resources but that's holding my characters back, they're weak bc of low relics. so i think i've been too picky waiting. so yeah, so long as it's got the right main stat and at least 2 substats, i'm upgrading.
also then had to take a ton of time to do more with salvaging to then generate more of the material, and i really struggle with salvaging what really isn't a great item vs but what if a future character needs it or what if a 2/4 pc bonus combines with unexpected stats and gets recommended in the guides, like i wouldn't have suspected healing stats being needed on what looks to be non healing relic types. so hard to know what's trash and what the guides are going to suddenly say is useful. (and jfc is everyone going to end up in hackerspace?)
but doing my best. trying to use mats and not just hoard them for 'just in case' when characters need them now and i can tell it's why i'm so much weaker than other players. and trying to learn, like i know it takes me so much longer to pick up this information (just finally getting to where i understand pity and 50-50). wish there were a bit more info on this stuff for those of us who're new to hoyo games (like my dabbling in genshin never got me to gearing and evaluating stats so sr is basically my first).
not that many levels left on the battle passes, i'm in the 40s, so yeah, it'll be a bummer when that dries up. bc there's quite a while left before the new one.
#it'd still be nice if i could find people doing text guides about salvaging basics i'll have to keep looking#just not youtube i need writing >_>;#it's sad that i'm this game dumb but i've always been like that#took me all of vanilla wow to really learn the basics of mmos and raiding and to start to understand my class (rogue)#ofc then i promptly switched to warlock with burning crusade lol#but i think this style of game is different enough that i've really been clueless even though it's been since june#though it's *only* been since june like a few months? compared to the years i spent in other games (or near a decade and a half in wow)#it's just kind of like i think so many are so familiar with these systems from so much time in genshin or even that other honkai game#that it's all second nature like everyone's in hoyo college and i'm still in grade school#trying to find guides that handhold and speak to my 'for dummies' level >_>;;#and lord i still don't know if i'm rushing it and wasting materials maxing out upgrades on relics that match 2+ substats#maybe others wait for 3 or 4 substats? bc i tried and was upgrading so few it was so rare?#or do people max out just if the main stat matches or with that or one substat?#this is where i miss the social aspects of mmos i could ask others easier and compare what i was doing vs them#i like game8.co but i still have made so many so many mistakes bc even being a guide that assumes more knowledge of the system than i had#like i needed guides that said no don't trust their automatic relic assignment button it's bad you have to evaluate each item and here's ho#and here's where you use your resources to upgrade#finally have the achievement for synthesizing 5 relics though i'm going to be super cautious on doing more#what with the extreme rarity of the resin#anyway... babbling to the void here i know#please ignore my sr bs#and figures i salvage all that disciple stuff bc i don't have blade and the guides say other stuff for arlan (who i won't lvl for ages)#only to find out that it's exactly what fx will need and while i don't have her what if i do get her?#it's exactly why i've been in 'save everything' mode bc the moment i got rid of something i didn't need whoops turns out it might be needed#i swear this game makes me so often feel like i'm always not doing the right thing while constantly doing the wrong thing#i'd like to feel like i truly understand the basics and am mostly competent with them but i'm not to that point yet :/

Day 4. Monster-kinktober: Deep Sea + Bitemarks/Ice Play
A/N: I took liberties about the deep sea part, hope yâall donât mind. It ended up being a lot more plot and a lot more fluffy than anticipated, bon apetite!
Orca-hybrid x fem!reader || marking, temperature play, soulmates
When they offer you to travel to the North Pole to do some research on the orca-hybrids up there, you are all over the moon. Youâve been obsessed with them since you had enough brain to think, you even studied marine biology and specialized in sea hybrids so you could study them more (very neurodivergent of you).
You spend the whole trip there being jittery and excited, to the point everyone starts teasing you about your love for orca-hybrids. You blush and donât say nothing, they donât even know half of it. You are obsessed with them in every way possible. Which means thereâs a big chance you have a bit more than interest in them⌠more of a sexual interest. But who could blame you? They are tall and exotic, could walk on two feet but also swim incredibly well⌠They are the best of both worlds and you are about to see them for the first time, to talk to them for the first time. You could barely contain a squeal when the helicopter landed on the base and you saw the orca village not far from there. They were so close!
And things only get better from there.
The first day you approach the village to do some interviews and asks about their habits and culture, they welcome you like a friend, and you are all over the moon all over again. They are so interesting and so different from humans that your brain is going a thousand times per minute at every new piece of information they give you.
And when the sonâs leader appears and you see him for the first time, your breath catches in your throat. Your eyes meet for the first time in front of everyone in the village, and you feel how your pulse accelerates as he approaches. He kneels on the floor in front of you, much to your surprise and everyone else around you. You know that it means he respects you over himself, which is a huge deal in orca-hybrid culture. You donât even know what to say when he introduces himself and asks about your name. You stutter for a bit until you finally get the words out as everyone else just stares at you two.
You leave that day with a red face and a new friend.
All of your colleagues ask you about it for hours, how did you do it, how did you get that amount of respect as easy and fast. But you donât know, you donât understand it either. But the next day when you go outside to grab your motorbike and get to the village, heâs already waiting outside the door.
âGood morning,â he lets out in a deep voice. Your whole body shivers and you try to convince yourself that itâs because of the cold and not because his presence makes you weak in the knees.
âGood morning,â you respond, casually vowing in front of him. He looks surprised at your gesture, but repeats it with a big smile that shows all his teeth. It should be creepy or scary, considering how giant his mouth and teeth are, but you find it weirdly cute. You blush again, it feels like every time you are in his presence you canât stop blushing.
You give him a ride to the village, and he holds your much smaller body against his like you are the most precious thing in the world, making you feel all kinds of flirty. And thatâs how it goes. He walks up to the base, he accompanies you everywhere, he spends more and more time with you. You two talk and talk, and discover more and more about him and his people. Every time you are in the village, heâs not far away, his eyes always on you. And you⌠you are falling for him. And you have no idea if he feels the same way, you donât even know if orca-hybrids like humans in that way.
But everything changes after a month. He rides with you to the village, but this time, once you are there, he takes your hand and walks away with you, your colleagues long forgotten as some other orca-hybrids lead them in another direction.
âWhere are we going?â You ask when you are a few meters away.
He looks down at you and smiles. âIâm taking you to the cave.â
You try not to be too excited, you know about the cave, but itâs not possible heâs leading you to their sacred cave, the one no outsiders can step into, right? Thereâs no way. âWhat cave?â You ask, trying not to sound too hopeful.
âThe sacred cave, I need to show something to you there,â he says, cryptically. But you donât even pay attention to his tone or his words after he says the word sacred. Heâs leading you to the most special place in his culture, and you are going to be the first human to see it.
Oh. My. God.
When you arrive, you are mesmerized. Everything is covered in a soft layer of ice and some kind of plant youâve never seen before. It looks like normal grass, but when you touch it, it moves, like tiny tentacles undulating at the rhythm of unknown forces. Your orca-hybrid crush stares at you with a smile on his face until you have touched and probed and oh-ed and ah-ed everything around you.
You stare at him, your eyes shiny with tears because of the emotion of being there. âWhy did you take me here?â You finally whisper, not wanting to disturb the pace of such a place.
âYou are my mate,â he announces, and your breath gets caught in your throat. You know what that means, youâve been studying them long enough to know. Orcas mate for life. Oh, goddess. He looks at you with uncertainty in his eyes. âDonât you feel it? The pull?â
âI- I do. But itâs not the same for humans. How can you be sure of it?â
âYou smell so good that I want to taste you, thatâs how. Nobody else smells as good as you do, my mate,â his words sound like a reverence, and you are about to collapse from all the feelings running around in your body. You look at him with your mouth hanging open, not fully processing his words. âI know you are the one. The one who completes your soul. The one who would form a family with you and protect you from every danger in the world. The companionship that will make your life whole and your heart beats for somebody else.â You feel a tear running down your cheek at the same time he leans down and engulfs you in a crushing hug. âDo you accept being my mate? Say yes,â he pleads.
You push his chest a bit and look at his eyes trying to decipher whatever is happening inside of you. But the only thought that comes to mind is how right he feels, how amazing itâs been to be with him all those days⌠He feels right. âYes,â you murmur, grabbing his big head and pulling him down in a crushing kiss.
âHow does it work?â You ask.
âI will mark you and we will be joined for life,â he explains. You feel almost vertigo at the thought of being with him forever, but at the same time you feel warmth and heat, and a conviction so big it leaves you breathless. It is what you should do, you know that. âReady?â He asks when he lowers his mouth to your neck. You nod and he bites down, you arch your back and cry out at the sensation.
What you thought was going to be painful is so pleasurable your brain stops working for a second, your whole body reacting to it, heat running down your spine until you are desperate. You whine when he pulls out his teeth, kissing softly around it until your knees are weak and you are so wet itâs insane.
Itâs exhilarating, and when he undresses you completely and lays you down on the weird undulating grass, you can feel it caressing your skin. You realize then you canât feel the cold, something inside of you changing and adapting to your new mate. He takes an icicle from the closest wall, smirking down at you and running it over your body, over all your sensitive places until you are a mess under him, until you are even wetter and more desperate. You need him like you need air.
âMake love to me,â you plead. He smiles at you and kisses you again, his mouth still tasting like blood, but also something indescribable.
âWhatever you want, my mate.â He doesnât discard the icicle, rubbing it around your nipples and making you moan like a whore as you feel the tip of his huge cock in your entrance. He made sure to make you so wet it slides right in, your body accommodating him instantly. You groan and he shushes you, donât worry, my mate, the bite took root and you are perfect for me now, we fit like two puzzle pieces.â
He keeps pushing until heâs fully inside of you, until your brain is blank and your body is shivering with the need to explode. He rubs the icicle over your clit at the same time he thrusts his scalding member inside of you, the combination of temperatures is so extreme that you start shivering, your pussy contracting around him and making him moan over you. He keeps praising you and your body and your pussy and everything that has to do with you, to the point you are blushing and your heart feels too big inside your body.
You are about to tell him you love him when flashes appear behind your closed eyes and your body explodes in the most intense orgasm of your life, his body going rigid over yours as you feel his shaft getting slightly bigger as he starts to come. You scream his name as you scratch his back, and he kisses the marks on your neck until your body stops trembling under him.
âI love you, my mate,â he whispers.
âI love you, too,â you whisper back, almost asleep.

Not a gold digger
pairing: Max Verstappen x reader
summary: Fans think you only want Max's money. But as it turns out, you were wealthy before he came into your life--you just don't make it obvious.
warnings: No smut, but there's a part that makes me say MDNI.
note: So... I'm kinda back? Idk, I'll see if I'll stick around.
The toxicity of the fandom was becoming quite entertaining, really. It was the third time since you and Max had made your relationship public half a year ago that someone started an anti gold digger campaign to protect your boyfriend. They truly believed they were doing this for a greater good, and they all begged Max for his attention.
It always began after they sniffed out he had given you something expensive as a gift or took you shopping to a luxury boutique. While there were some people who tried to protect you by pointing out that maybe he enjoyed showering you with gifts, the rest didn't care about that.Â
You lived in a small apartment back home, you were driving a five years old Renault SUV, and no one knew what you did for a living. This was enough to enrage them and make them believe all you wanted was Max's money at the end of the day. Just think about the way she's looking at him, one of them wrote about two months ago, she's so clearly not in love with him. Poor Max, someone please save him.Â
Ridiculous.
âIs everything okay?â he asked when he got home and kissed the top of your head.Â
You were sitting in his sim rig, using the time while it was free to practice, because you wanted to play with him when you weren't here together, and he was more than happy to show you the basics. âSomeone started another campaign to cancel me,â you replied casually as you got out with his help.Â
Even when you were standing in front of him, he didn't let go of your hand, instead he raised it to his lips to place a soft kiss on its back. âGold digging?â You nodded with a sad look on your face, but less than five seconds later you were both laughing. âLook, I know you're having way too much fun with this, butââ
Without waiting for him to finish, you raised your hand to make him stop. âI'm not stepping out of the shadows, Max. I've been hiding for years, even fucking Forbes doesn't know my real name or face,â you told him.
Back in the old days, when Bitcoin appeared, your geeky uncle had gotten into mining and trading it. He knew the potential, so he put most of his savings into buying them, then he held onto them, and by the time he got sick years later, he knew they were valuable and would be worth a lot more in the upcoming years. In his will, he left his savings and his wallet to you, giving you the chance to use them as you wished since you had learned everything about crypto from him.
So now you had Bitcoin as well as old fashioned investments, and you had used your money to help out an up-and-coming tech company for a forty percent share, and it was later sold to a tech giant for a lot of money. But despite your wealth, you chose to stay under the radar, because you loved your small apartment, and you weren't about to trade it for some fancy penthouse.Â
You had met Max the year before in Las Vegas. F1 was a sport you watched with your uncle while he was still alive, and you were hell-bent on getting a VIP pass for the weekend. If you asked your boyfriend, he would say it was love at first sight, but in reality he was just annoyed by you. For a solid ten seconds, he would correct you every time you talked about it.
You agreed that you would hide in Max's apartment until this latest campaign died down, which gave you some time to spend together in peace. Every now and then you checked the tags to see how things were going, and after the silence of the past few days, today your name was trending again. Ready to have a good laugh, you opened the tag, but the most popular post gave you a minor stroke.
âOh, fuck me,â you yelled as you launched your phone into the couch.
Max pulled the headset down to his neck as he looked over at you. âIs everything okay?â You raised your finger to your lips as if you wanted him to stay quiet, but luckily he got the message. âI'm muted. So?â
You grabbed your phone and went over to him. âThey know. One of those idiots from the company I helped back in the day posted a tweet to protect me, saying that if it wasn't for me being an angel investor, they wouldn't be millionaires now,â you summarized as you gave him the device.
He scrolled through a series of tweets, and found a post from a journalist of Forbes in which he promised a proper investigative piece based on this info. He handed you the phone, then wrapped an arm around your waist. âIt's okay, schatje. I know that's not what you wanted, but maybe they'll stop with the recurring hate campaign now,â he tried. âAnd if youâre worried about the article⌠Donât be. There is nothing compromising about you. Yes, you inherited the money, but you have proven you know what to do with it.â
âMaybe youâre right,â you admitted with a sigh.Â
âIâm usually right. Câmere,â he said as he reached out to pull you closer, but you glanced over at the camera. Rolling his eyes, he quickly turned it off, then gave you an expectant look. âWill you hug me now? And I want a kiss too.â
With a laugh, you leaned down to wrap your arms around his neck and gave him a soft kiss. But he wanted more, his hand slowly sneaked under your shorts, his fingers running over your clothed cunt before he decided to pull your panties aside and dip a finger between your folds. You moaned into the kiss, but he pulled away a second later to lick his finger clean.Â
Shaking your head with a chuckle, you patted his shoulder and walked back to the couch. You could feel Maxâs eyes on you the whole time, and when you looked at him again, he flashed a devilish smile at you. âI should quit the stream. Now that I had a taste, I want more,â he told you.Â
âIâm not going anywhere, just try to be patient.â
He looked back at the screen, then put the headset back on his head and unmuted his mic. âSorry, I have to go. See you next time,â he told the others, then logged out. You couldnât remember the last time he left the sim rig this fast, and only a few seconds later he was kneeling in front of you, eagerly reaching up to pull your shorts off you.

f1gossips: Breaking news! Turns out Max Verstappen's girlfriend isn't a gold digger after all as she has her own fortune according to the investigative article published by Forbes. Will the fans apologize?

Hey you lovely human :) Just dropped in to say I bumped into blog like yesterday and since then I ATE (almost) everything Gojo related (still have a couple left), like I genuinely am in LOVE with everything. If you are ever willing to take upon this idea, I was curious about how you see Gojo meeting his significant other and falling in love ? Would love to see the beginning of their relationship and how they ended up together. Thank you and since is already weekend here for me almost - i hope you have a gorgeous weekend!! ^^
creepy eyes â gojo satoru x f!reader
a/n: AHHH THAT MAKES ME SO HAPPY OMG TYYYYY and i am so sorry that i took so long </3 ANYWAY this is how I imagine gojo first meeting his wife cause i believe that it has to be before gojo closed off and that she became a trusted and close friend of his
itâs just another afternoon at jujutsu high, the sun bathing the grounds in a soft glow, casting long shadows as students hurry from class to class.
youâre deep in thought, focused on training, when you suddenly collide with something solidâor rather, someone.
you stumble back a step, blinking up at the towering figure now standing before you. you glance up, only to find yourself staring into a pair of eyesâbright, intense, and painfully blue.
the boy is about to say something, but you beat him.
âmy god, your eyes are creepy,â you blurt out before you can stop yourself.
thereâs a beat of stunned silence.
the giantâs mouth drops open slightly, his eyebrows raise in sheer disbelief as if youâve just insulted the most precious thing in the world to him.
âmy eyes?!â he gasps, hand flying dramatically to his chest. âyou think my eyes are creepy?â
you nod, grimacing at the loud sound, âyeah, they're unnerving. kind of like staring into a bottomless pit.â
satoru is scandalized. âmy eyes are beautiful!â his voice pitches higher, as if stating a fact that should be universally accepted.
he tilts his head closer to you and taking his glasses off, daring you to look again. âtake another look! appreciate them!â
you squint, unimpressed, and simply shrug, brushing past him, âIâll pass.â
thatâs the beginning.
days turn into weeks, and the more you try to forget about that initial encounter, the more satoru wonât let you. every time you cross paths, itâs like he has a personal mission to make you take back that one insult.
whether itâs during training, at lunch, or in the hallway, satoru somehow finds a way to bring it up.
âyou still donât think my eyes are nice?â he asks, exaggeratedly crestfallen, peering at you with that playful gleam.
âyeah, still creepy.â
âbut why?â he exclaims, leaning against the doorframe or sitting next to you with a theatrical sigh. âdo you not see the sparkle? the beauty? the endless charm?â
it becomes such a regular thing that even suguru canât help but get involved. he appears at satoruâs side, casually rolling his eyes at his friendâs dramatics, though a smirk plays on his lips.
âyouâre still on about that?â geto quips. âmaybe just accept that she has good taste, satoru.â
âoh, shut up, suguru! sheâs just blind to my perfection!â satoru retorts, crossing his arms as he watches you chat away with shoko.
and so it goes. satoruâs relentless teasingâhalf playful, half desperateâstarts weaving into the fabric of your days.
every time you think heâll finally let it go, heâs right there, flashing that expectant grin as if waiting for you to finally give in.
months pass. the seasons start to shift, but satoru's persistence doesnât.
he keeps bugging you about itâless often than before, but every once in a while, he'll find an opportunity.
whether it's during class or during a mission, he brings it up with that same confident, teasing smile.
itâs a lazy afternoon when it happens.
youâre outside, lounging against a tree in the sun with a book in hand, trying to relax after a mission when satoru flops down beside you, elbow nudging yours.
his sunglasses slip down the bridge of his nose as he grins at you. âstill think theyâre creepy?â
you donât even look up from your book. âyup.â
he leans in, resting his chin on his hand, giving you that pout again. âcome on, youâre just being mean at this point.â
you stifle a laugh, flipping a page. âam I?â
satoru lets out a dramatic sigh, âyouâre impossible, you know that? these eyes are a national treasure.â
you canât help the small laugh that escapes your lips this time. it makes satoru blink, clearly caught off guard by the sound.
he tilts his head, eyes narrowing in curiosity as he leans closer to your face. âwait⌠was that a real laugh? are you finally admitting Iâm funny?â
you roll your eyes, looking away from him as you smile. âdonât push your luck.â
he grins widens at the sight of your smile, and he is about to boast of his achievement when you glance at him. with amusement still tugging at your lips, you reach out and push his sunglasses up with a playful tap.
âfine, fine,â you relent, voice teasing as you give him a small grin,âI think your eyes are very pretty.â
for once, satoruâs the one caught off guard.
he blinks rapidly, a flash of surprise flickering across his face as he pulls himself away and tries process your words.
your smile doesnât falter, but satoruâs eyebrows furrow, before he chirps, standing up, âwellâitâs about time you admitted that!â
your eyes widen, as he gets loud and starts ranting about his beauty, âit is only natural that you succumb to my charms! ahaha! my eyes are only one part of it!â
confused but having nothing to say, you lean back against the bark. you donât mention out loud that his ears are tinted pink, not that satoru would give you the chance to call him out.
but you both know that something has changed.

Your darling, adoring, wonderful boyfriend Jason sits you down And solemnly confesses that he is red hood. Heâs been dreading this day for months. If you want to leave, heâll understand and waitâ-
WHAT DO YOU MEAN, YOU KNEW THE WHOLE TIME?
Jason thinks heâs in an angst fic. The reader is in a rom com where her boyfriend has been a ridiculously obvious superhero, but sheâll let him tell her when heâs ready.
Maybe some shaningany flashbacks where youâve helped to keep his identity secret (stalling so he can change, giving alibis) while he was oblivious.

To Wait and To Love
Hi Batchilla! Hope you enjoy! ⥠~1.5k words
Your boyfriend is a vigilante, Red Hood, to be exact. You know this. He's just not aware you know this.
It's obvious, really, and kind of cute the way he makes excuses to leave. Sure, before you put two and two together, it was starting to seem like he was just dragging you along. But it all made sense when you caught sight of the helmet poorly concealed under his bed.
It makes you wonder if he wants to get caught. Especially when he brings you flowers from the shop you just saw him save from Poison Ivy on TV. Or freezer-burnt cartons of ice cream from your favorite ice cream shop, which was buried under piles of snow courtesy of one Mr. Freeze only twenty minutes ago.
You offer him big smiles and kisses of thanks, and your heart melts a little at how relieved he looks, how baffled he is by your understanding. And you do understand. To tell someone you run around in spandex and leather every night is a big risk, especially for someone who used to run crime in Gotham.
You're no angel yourself, even if he does call you one, and it's endearing to watch him scramble for excuses. It's even more endearing that he tries so hard to make it up to you when he's late, when he has to leave early, when he comes back battered and bruised with flimsy half-thought out explanations.
You'll let him take all the time he needs to tell you, and it's almost funny how easily you've come to cover for him.
"Jason? Oh, he's changing his suit. Someone knocked into me and I spilled my drink all over his jacket. How embarrassing," You laugh out, answering the reporter's question over Jason's absence from the latest Wayne Gala. It's only half a lie, you might not have spilled your drink but he's definitely changing his suit. It's just not the suit anyone would expect.
Once whispers of a break-in at Gotham National Bank started circulating the Gala, it wasn't hard to miss the meaningful glances between your boyfriend and his family. Sometimes you wonder how no one's noticed it before.
You smile brightly at him once he comes back, smelling like gunpowder and leather, and you let him kiss your knuckles while he mumbles apologies over getting caught up with an old friend. You don't imagine Riddler is exactly an old friend, but you teasingly tell him how he owes you a dance for making you wait. He smiles back, his own grin even brighter than yours, as he leads you to the dance floor.
You're opening the door to your apartment, chatting lazily with your friend after a night out.
"Is your boyfriend here? I remember you saying you two were practically living together," they ask, eyes trailing around your living space.
You hum thoughtfully, "We pretty much are. I think he might be sleeping or out looking for the stray cat we saw the other day. It had a bad limp." It's not a hundred percent a lie either, there was a hurt stray. You just know that Catwomen already picked it up, after a text Jason sent to Bruce Wayne's current girlfriend, Miss. Selena Kyle. Which would have been more of a surprise if you didn't already know who Batman was.
But it definitely isn't the truth, because you did catch sight of a red helmet following you and your friend back from the club. (Gotham never felt safer, than when he was watching over you.)
Your friend coos and starts to respond, when a thump sounds from the fire escape. They jolt, "What was that?"
"The cat, probably," You say quickly, letting out a laugh, "it's, uh, pretty big. Has a limp. Hey, did I show you the flowers Jason got me?" You gesture towards the bouquet behind them, and you both focus on the pretty blossoms.
Within minutes, you hear your bedroom door open and close. "Hi, baby," Jason drawls, looping an arm around your waist to pull you to his side, "Sorry, I fell asleep, how was your night?"
You pretend not to notice the limp he's nursing, one you're certain he should be resting, and tilt your head up to kiss his jaw, "It was fun. Missed you."
"I missed you too," he echoes fondly, and the three of you fall into an easy conversation. You distract your friend when you all go to sit on the couch, and if you choose to avoid sitting on his left side, it's certainly not because Red Hood hurt his leg fighting Killer Croc earlier this week.
Jason has never said your name like that before. His eyebrows are knitted together. He's kneeling in front of you, his hands clasped over yours as you sit on the bed.
"I love you and Iâ I have something to tell you," he chokes out, strained, "please, justâ just, hear me out."
It clicks. This is it. He's going to tell you.
You smile and nod, it'll be nice to finally air out this secret. And maybe he could help you work on your excuses? It'll be easier if you're working as a team. You reach out and brush his hair back, unfazed and delighted he's trusting you enough with this, "Of course, Jason. Anything you need to tell me."
Jason is going to throw up. He's finally gotten his act together enough that he's going to tell his partner he's Red Hood. His stomach is churning, it's agony, knowing he could lose them over this.
They're so good to him. So understanding and patient and kind. He has no idea how he got so lucky. And he loves them. It's scary sometimes, how much he loves them. He wants this to last so badly. So, he has to be honest. Has to tell them he isn't what the world says he is.
He's a vigilante. Was a crime lord. He hurts people to save people. He terrifies the trash that calls themselves human. He's not good for you, but he tries. He wants you to still love him.
He wants you to stay so much. Even if he's not good. He wants you. You deserve so much more than the excuses and lies he gives. Jason's wanted to tell you for weeks, but he chokes on his words every time. He's never been so afraid of doing something. Not when he was a kid on the streets. Not when he was Robin. Not as Red Hood.
You look so perfect, sitting at the edge of your bed and smiling at him. He almost flinches when he thinks this could be the last time you smile at him.
He's on his knees. He's prepared to beg. He would beg to keep you.
He says your name, he tells you he loves you. It might be the last time he gets to say that to you. The thought makes him even more nauseous. He tells you he has something to say.
You brush his hair back and keep smiling. He wants to sob. You don't know. You don't know what he is, what he's done.
"I'm Red Hood," he gasps out, voice ragged.
A beat. You're still smiling, you still look happy, and you're nodding at him.
He blinks at you, "I'm Red Hood," he repeats, "I know that- I know it's a lot. I understand if you never want to see me again, but, babyâ"
You lean forward and kiss him. He's more than just a little dumbfounded. "Jason, I love you too. I'm not leaving you. I, um, kind of already knew you were Red Hood?" You say, a sheepish smile coming over your face.
"Youâ what?" Jason stumbles out. You're still here. Still touching him. You kissed him. You look relaxed. Happy.
"I saw your helmet under the bed. Everything clicked after that," You tell him gently.
"And you're okay with that? You're okay with me?" He asks, tone betraying his desperation.
Concern flashes in your eyes, "Of course I'm okayâ I'm more than okay with that, Jason. I love you, tights or not."
He lets out a laugh, and his stomach swoops, the tension dissipating throughout his body, "Yeah?"
You grin at him, cupping his face, "Yeah, but you're going to have to show me how you swing around rooftops."
He gets off his knees to kiss you again, he doesn't think this moment could get any better, "Is that all?"
You giggle, at the pure elation in his eyes, and he grins widely at your joy. Then, the moment does get better, "Well, I'm kinda interested in the car Batman drives around you."
"I could make that happen," he murmurs, and seals the promise with another kiss, "You wanna see the batplane too?"
Your eyes light up, and Jason thinks he might be addicted to the mischievous glint that flickers in your gaze.

a/n: welcome to part one! it's been a hot minute since i've posted anything as thought out and in-depth as this so if you could take a few minutes to reblog or comment some feedback, i'd very much appreciate it. âĽ
"Corroded Coffin! Corroded Coffin! Corroded Coffin!"
The ever-growing crowd had been calling for the band the entire time you'd been waiting in line, which, after looking at the watch tucked beneath the sleeve of your cardigan, had been almost an hour and a half. The chanting had gotten so loud that, at some point, you'd stopped being able to hear yourself think, instead relying on Steve's large hand clasped around your own to tell you when to shuffle forward.
You felt out of place, unlike Steve and Robin. Everywhere you looked, people were dressed in leather and chains; piercings here, there, and everywhere; fishnets; big black platform boots; heavy make-up; and tattoos. And then there was you, dressed in a simple summer dress, hugging a knitted cardigan around your shoulders, wearing strappy sandals, and looking like someone right out of the Stepford Wives.
Other people noticed; you'd swear it, though no one said anything. As you looked between people, you caught a few of them looking at you, their expressions a motley of emotions that made you shift uncomfortably. Metal music had never been a particular favourite of yours, and concerts like thisâwhere people were packed in like sardinesâdefinitely weren't your preferred scene. The thought of being alone, snuggled beneath a blanket, and enjoying a glass of Moscato was much more appealing.
But you'd promised Steve and Robin that you'd come.
Well, no, not exactly. You hadn't promised either of them anything; instead, you'd given in to their constant whining. Steve and Robin had hung themselves from your legs as though they were dramatic, tantruming toddlers, pouting, and begging you to go with them. And after promising to cook dinner every night for a weekâno, wait, a month!âyour resolve finally broke.
That was how you found yourself finally walking through the double doors of the stadium. A gust from the air conditioner greeted you as you stepped inside, blowing your hair into your eyes and lip gloss, but it was a welcomed relief.
"I think that took literally forever." Your feet were already aching, and the thought of standing for another two hours was mentally and physically exhausting. Sure, you'd listened to some of Corroded Coffin's songs and thought they were good, but you weren't looking forward to standing in a sweaty crowd.
"Right. That was crazy, and they only have two scanners going. It's going to take forever to get everyone inside." Steve replied. His fingers tightened around yours when he felt your strides slowing, and he turned to notice your attention was on the merchandise display a few feet away. Following your gaze, he found the band tees hung up on a pinboard, images pressed onto the fronts and backs of each one. Some showed the band's tour dates and the cities they were scheduled to stop in, while others had stylised versions of Eddie's face.
Steve practically beamed with pride. He was proud of how far Eddie had come since they'd metâfrom school freak to famous rockstar. It was a big change, but a well-deserved one, given all the shit he'd been through. Somehow, he'd remained modest and hadn't forgotten where he'd come from; he'd gotten his uncle out of the trailer and into a two-bedroom apartment; he thanked his uncle and friends during every interview; he'd even forgiven his childhood bullies, though he never forgot what they'd done to him.
"Come on," he said while tugging your hand. "We should get in before the show starts," he said when you hesitated, teeth tugging on your lower lip as you continued to eye the shirts, bandanas, and posters on display. It was called the Upside Down Tour, and the band had released a limited-edition shirt for the tour.
"I want to get a shirt; this is the first concert like this I've ever been to. I want something to remember it." You explained. You wriggled your fingers in his, hinting that you wanted him to let go. If you'd have blinked, you might have missed it, but you swore that Steve and Robin shared a lookâthe kind that carried secret conversations and amusement.
Your heart stuttered in your chest, painful and sudden, while your mind raced to a dozen terrible thoughts. What if they regretted bringing you along, even though they'd practically begged you to go? What if they were angry? Fuck, what if they hated you? You must have looked like you were about to pass out because Steve took pity on you, reassuringly squeezing your hand as he stepped closer.
"Shit, sorry," he apologised with a crooked smile. "It's all good. We can pick one up after the show, okay? We need to get inside before security locks the doors."
"Oh,"Â you answered. You ducked your head to hide your face, which felt like it was burning with embarrassment. You suddenly felt childish for letting your anxiety get the better of you, especially given that this was Steve and Robin, who had been nothing but kind from the moment you'd first met them. "Of course. After the show."
As though she sensed your distress, which she more than likely did because you radiated emotions like the sun radiated heat, Robin grabbed your other hand, lacing her fingers with yours, and gave you a sympathetic smile that mimicked the one on Steve's face. You loved them, but sometimes you hated them. So often, Robin and Steve seemed to be on the same page, on the same mental wavelength, having entire conversations with the lofting of a brow or half-smirk while you were on your own, a stranger looking in.
You tried not to think about it and tried desperately not to let negative emotions get the better of you tonight. You were at a concert with two amazing people, about to see a fantastic band play live. It was going to be a good night. Steve showed his ticket to one of the women managing the traffic flow, who motioned down a steep staircase into a standing pit right in front of the stage.
As you predicted, the crowd was already massive; there were too many people to fit comfortably within the stadium, but no one would complain as long as everyone behaved. And everyone would behave if they were able to see the band play. It wasn't long before the lights went down, and the crowd's cheering rose to a thunderous crescendo.
You felt the violent vibrations of the bass guitar as the bassist began the opening riftâhow it rattled the ivory cage around your lungs until your entire body swayed to the rhythm. A sudden fireworks explosion dazzled and blinded you as the crowd rushed forward. Then the atmosphere turned electric, casting a weaving web on the crowd and drawing them in.
When the smoke settled, you saw the band had taken their places on stage, dressed in black denim, leather, chains, tattoos, and wild hair. They preened beneath the attention of their peers as the frontman and lead singer, Eddie Munson, moved to stand before a microphone. "I hope you're ready to rock, Hawkins, 'cause we're not stopping until the cops come knocking!"
Steve grabbed your wrist and dragged you in front of him, pushing you closer to the stage. That was how you found yourself standing front and centre. One of his hands grabbed your hip firmly, ready to break the fingers of any other wandering hands. He wrapped his other arm around Robin's shoulders, holding her to him as they sang along to a song you didn't know the words to.
It wasn't your proximity to him or the bruising grip of his fingers that warmed your blood, but the singer on stage. You'd seen pictures of Eddie in the trashy magazine you picked up from the gas station occasionally; each one seemed to be a different headline, each as scandalous as the last. Corroded Coffin's singer caught with another woman? Eddie Munson, Satanic Priest! Some of them were ridiculous, and none of them had been particularly entertaining, especially when, in every interview, he seemed humble, perhaps even flustered by the fame.
The sight of him on stage sent heat dripping down your cheeks and into your neck, spiralling through your veins to gather at your core.
He looked like a devil but had the face of an angelâwild curls bounced around his face, you caught glimpses of his inked skin, and there was a perfect trail of hair on his abdomen. He strummed at his guitar strings as though it were his lover, plucking the cords with perfectly practised movements. You wondered what else his fingers could do, and a wild blush crept into your face.
As though your thoughts weren't mortifying enough, he seemed to have noticed. His eyes found yours in the crowd, as if he could see straight into your brain and was plucking the fantasies from your mind.
The world slowed to a crawl and faded until it was just the two of you and your racing thoughts. You drank in the sight of him. You caught glimpses of his tattoos, watched how droplets of sweat rolled down the hollow of his throat as the heat of the stage lights bore down on him, and watched how his lips moved as he sang, the rasps of his voice enough to make you tremble.
You tugged your lower lip between your teeth, almost afraid to look away; you wanted this moment to go on forever and ever. But as abruptly as it began, the fantasy ended when he looked out across the crowd, and as he did, the world snapped back into place. Your heart was racing, and your breath was erratic.
You felt silly having been caught up in such an intense moment with a perfect stranger, even if he was handsome and famousâa perfect mixture of exhilaration and embarrassment. You glanced at Robin and Steve, hoping they hadn't noticed your captivated state. They hadn't.
The two were still singing and enjoying the music, bouncing up and down as a guitar solo swept through the speakers. Worrying your lip between your teeth, you looked back at the stage, trying valiantly to refocus on the music. After a while, the guitar's pounding bass and electrifying energy were enough to pull you back into the moment.
You felt captivated, as though whatever dark spell he was weaving had fallen upon you, too. His performance was filled with raw emotion and a rebellious spirit, with the lyrics resonating with something deep inside you, echoing your desires, and enticing a wildness to spark in your veins.
You stole another glance at him, and his eyes again met yours. It was almost as if the universe had conspired to connect you two in a chaotic sea of people. With a sudden burst of courage you didn't think yourself capable of, you gave a bashful smile and lifted your hand, waving at him.
He saw and acknowledged you with a knowing smile, to your surprise and amusement. It felt like a dirty secret. You would swear that your face was on fire from how hard you were blushing, your fingers wringing together nervously at the front of your dress.
It seems silly. In fact, you knew it was silly, childish, and stupid.
You didn't know him, and he didn't know you. You knew the media's version of himâthe stylised rockstar who'd grown up poor, defied the odds, and came out on topâthe playboy who had a different girl every other week and who'd been caught having sex with fans in odd places. But what you'd felt, however brief, had ignited a fire in the pit of your stomach. You felt it smouldering as you were lost in the music and its wild energy.
The last guitar riff played, and the crowd erupted into thunderous applause. You expected the crowd to thin down now that the show was finished, but they remained, hooting and hollering, vying for his attention.
"He was incredible!" You shouted as you turned to Steve, straining to be heard above the crowd. He gave you a funny expression and tilted his head to the side, causing a stir of hair to fall into his face.
"What?"Â
"I said," you shouted while moving closer to him. "That was incredible!"
This time, he heard you, chuckling under his breath and holding you in place when you tried to slip through the crowd. And then you saw Eddie standing at the edge of the stage, a security guard at his side. You could see they were talking, now if only you'd learned to read lips. Except you didn't need to read lips to know he was pointing right at the three of you.
Your heart stopped mid-beat, your mouth running dry, as a second security guard approached the three of you. From where you were frozen in time, you didn't see Steve and Robin grinning at each other or the glint in their eyes.
You were star-struck, staring at the security guard as if he'd grown a second head. And he might as well have because things like this didn't happen. Maybe it happened in the movies, but not real life and you weren't some perfectly poised beauty. You were a real woman with feelings; they were all over the place right now.
You grabbed Steve's arm when he stepped away, pulling him to a stop. He looked down at you with a furrowed brow. "What the hell is going on?" you hissed at him, not angry but entirely surprised and uncertain. He gave you a dashing and daring smile.
"Think he just invited us backstage."
"What?"
You'd tried to convince yourself that this was a wild dream. You even pinched yourselfâtwice. Things like this didn't happen to ordinary people, especially people like you. The shy woman who had to have a drink in her hand, the woman who took sips to fill the silence when talking became overwhelming, the woman who stammered and blushed with little more than a wink from a handsome man.
But it was happening. And now there you were, backstage, with Steve and Robin at your side, staring at a door with the band's name written in block letters. You could hear people milling about inside.
The security guard knocked, and you heard the muffled sound of movement, followed by something being knocked over and a chorus of laughter. Finally, the door was hauled open.
"Eddie!"
Robin's outburst startled you. She pushed past you and Steve, then the security guard, and threw herself at the man. You gawked at them, eyes wide as your soul burst to life, heart skipping several beats when he spun her in a circle. Robin's feet didn't touch the ground as they laughed.Â
You couldn't believe it.
There, standing not even five feet away, was the lead singer of Corroded Coffin, Eddie-fucking-Munsonâthe very same man you'd been eye-fucking on stage not even an hour ago. A part of you wanted the ground to open wide and swallow you whole. Another part screamed at you to cling to him as Robin had done.
"Hey,"Â Steve whispered, leaning slightly closer to your ear. "Are you doing okay? You look like you've seen a ghost or something."
"What?" You replied, your voice rising an octave in panic. Your gaze whirled between Steve and the duo, who seemed oblivious to your presence, and then back again. "Yes, well, no! You didn't tell me you knew him!"
"Who? Eddie?"Â He asked.
"That guy, right there, the famous guy hugging our friend?" You were incredulous, your arm flailing in their direction, much to Robin's amusement and Eddie's confusion. "Yes, him! You two know him?"
"What about Eddie?"
The sudden appearance of his voice made you squeak in surprise. His voice was dark, deep, and delectable, like chocolate, and hoarse. It felt like liquid heat pouring down your spine, flooding every intersecting bone until you trembled. Eddie smiled, and his cheeks dimpled in a way that had you blushing wildly.
You stared as Steve and Eddie swept each other into a bear hug, slapping each other on the back and again on the arm as they came apart. Robin gave you a playful poke in the side, bringing your attention back to her.
"What about Eddie?"Â She asked, which inevitably brought all of their attention to you. You shifted beneath the weight of their combined stare. Your eyes found Eddie's, and you looked away quickly.
"Yeah, what about Eddie, girl?"Â He playfully added.
"Nothing! It's just thatâumâwell, I didn't know youâuhâthat they knew you. That's all."Â You say, stumbling over the words like an awkward teenager. You mentally kicked yourself, but in truth, you'd never been good at talking to people. You'd always been a little shy, and everyone made fun of you before Steve and Robin slowly started coaxing you out of your shell.
And it wasn't as though he knew you. He probably hadn't seen you in the crowd. Now that you think about it, Eddie was just as likely to be smiling at them, not you, when he was on stage. But that didn't do anything to pull the blush out of your face or stop the way you shuffled under the gaze of the trio.
"Oh, yeah,"Â Eddie said with an awkward laugh, reaching up to scratch the back of his head. Your eyes went a little buggy when his shirt rode up, revealing that trail of hair that disappeared into the band of his jeans.
You looked away quickly before he could catch you staring, finding something on the wall that suddenly fascinated you. He didn't notice, or at least didn't say anything if he did. "Yeah, yeah, the three of us went to high school together. It seems like a lifetime ago."
Robin stared at him, her expression incredulous. "It was, like, five years ago, Eds. Don't you dare make me older than I am!" She said as the back of her hand connected with his stomach. Eddie huffed as he doubled over dramatically, clutching his stomach and coughing as though she'd just punched the air from his lungs. You laughed despite yourself, momentarily drawing his attention to you; he flashed you a dazzling smile before hustling the three of you inside.Â
It would have been spacious inside the room if it wasn't filled with boxes of merchandise, band equipment, and the rest of the band. The little composure you'd managed to hold onto disappeared when Steve and Robin rushed inside, similarly greeting the others, hugging and laughing like old friends.Â
You lingered at the door, unsure what to do with yourself, when you felt a hand against the small of your back, fingertips tapping just above the curve of your ass, high enough to be respectful but low enough to send a delicious shiver down your spine.
"Come on, sweetheart. They don't bite,"Â Eddie said with a laugh before leaning down to whisper in your ear. You felt his breath against your neck, the warmth of it making you shiver as he caught a glimpse of your cleavage before you hugged your cardigan around yourself.Â
"Well, I might,"Â he added. "If you ask nicely."
He didn't wait to see your reaction, but from the beaming smile plastered on his face, he'd heard your squeak of surprise. Instead, Eddie flounced into the room, joining Steve, Robin, and the others as you followed.
Once official introductions were made, you sat at the end of one of the couches next to Eddie, who seemed entirely unaware of your nervous inner turmoil. Occasionally, his thigh brushed against yours, jostling you in his excitable state as the group recalled their high school years.
"You were quite the ladies' man in high school, Steve. Don't act bashful now,"Â the drummer, Gareth, said with a booming laugh. You found yourself smiling and laughing with him, amused by the way Steve rubbed at the back of his neck and tried to deflect.Â
"I remember Robin telling me that the girls used to call him King Steve." You added. Gareth howled with laughter at how Steve flushed a deeper shade of pink. You smiled at him, pretty and sweet, but should have known he wouldn't let that slight go unanswered. You hardly had time to steel yourself before he returned fire.
"Hey now,"Â he said, his smile positively devilish. "Don't start throwing shade if you can't handle the sun, sweets. Because I could tell some stories about you, too. Well, no, I couldn't. I don't think I've ever heard those bed springs squeak."
You choked on a mouthful of beer, coughing as you glared at him in horror. "Steven Joseph Harrington!"Â Your face burned at the revelation of a secret you'd shared with him one drunk and wild night. Using his full government name was enough for him to know he'd crossed a line, but the laughter of his friends encouraged him.
"I can't help it if that's the truth, you know,"Â he said with a shrug.
"Wait, wait, wait!"Â Eddie shouted, shaking his hand wildly to get everyone's attention, especially yours. You squirmed in your seat, pushing yourself hard against the arm of the couch to try and escape his intense stare when he rounded on you.Â
"Never? As in never, ever?"
At that moment, you wanted the ground to open wide and swallow you. It wasn't that you were embarrassed to be a virgin, but the attention made you uncomfortable. You'd never been the type of woman to want a one-night stand with a stranger. Steve had offered once when you'd both been drunk and confessing secrets, but you'd never felt the itch.
And it wasn't that you considered your virginity to be a cherished and sacred part of yourself. But you'd never wanted to be that vulnerable with someone unless you trusted them entirely.Â
"Bullshit." Eddie spat, not nasty, but disbelieving. "You've gotta be shitting me. A pretty thing like you hasn't ever had sex? I know you're lying."
You stared at your hands resting in your lap, fingers wringing the hem of your dress until the stitching threatened to fray. From across the room, you heard the vague sound of Robin talking, mumbling something about you being as ripe as a cherry. She purposely popped her lips, and you wanted to die.
"Jesus Christ," you managed to choke out. "Yes, okay, I'm a total virgin. Can we talk about something else, please?"
The universe appeared to take mercy on you because the conversation changed topics at breakneck speed. One moment, Eddie was gawking at you; the next, he was focused entirely upon Jeff, who'd bought up something called the Hellfire Club. You took the opportunity to down the rest of your beer, letting the flavour of it wash away the taste of embarrassed tears.
The night went on in relative peace. You drank with them, listening to their wild stories of high school shenanigans and offering your own when prompted. You hadn't realised how much time had passed until you glanced at your watch and gawked:Â two in the morning.
"So, never?"Â Eddie asked without warning, his voice soft and almost innocent, breaking the silence that had blossomed within the room. You pulled your cardigan around your shoulders as though the thin material could shield you from his gaze. The others had fallen asleep, either drunk or high or just beyond exhausted. It was just the two of you.
Just you and Eddie.
"Look," you said with a sigh, your face burning again. "I really don't want to talk about that."
He held his hands in the universal sign of hold up. "I'm not judging you, sweetheart. I'm just curious. A pretty thing like you has to have a trail of broken hearts behind her."
You laughed despite yourself and relaxed back onto the couch, enjoying the warmth radiating from him. He was so close that you could see the way his Adam's apple bobbed with each swallow, the way he traced his lips with the tip of his tongue, the way the fabric of his jeans stretched across his lap, the bulge there. . .
You snapped your head away when he caught your staring.
"It's not like that. I've had boyfriends. I've just never felt comfortable doing anything with them. Not that they were bad people. I didn't want to do it because everyone was doing it. Then I got busy, and dating stopped happening. You understand? Of course you do. You're famous; I doubt you have much time for dating. Not that anyone wouldn't want to date you."
You were rambling, the words falling from your lips like verbal vomit, and you couldn't stop. Eddie silenced you, moving without warning to close the distance lingering between the two of you. He grabbed you by the back of the neck, his fingers rough and warm, pulling you into the wall of his chest so that he could slot his mouth against yours.
Eddie Munson tasted like cigarette smoke and alcohol, dark desire wrapped in leather. Eddie Munson smelled like adrenaline and sex, a woman's wet dream. Before you knew what you were doing, you kissed him back, desperate for more.
Eddie led you into an adjacent room, his fingers enveloping yours, providing a comforting anchor. The soft snores of the others faded into a distant hum as he closed the door. Your gaze traced the contours of his back, the curve of his shoulders, the way his studded jacket draped over them, the weight of his chunky black boots and the ruggedness of his ripped jeans. The belt cinched around his narrow waist, crowned with a buckle shaped like a bat, adding a touch of mystery to his rugged charm.
He turned abruptly, his hand slamming against the door beside your head, eliciting a startled yelp from you. Eddie pressed against you, your hands instinctively clutching the fabric of his shirt. Caught between the desire to pull him closer and the instinct to push him away, you found yourself staring at him with wide, uncertain eyes. Your heart pounded against its ivory prison, the uncertainty of the moment adding to its frantic beat.
"EâEddie?" You managed to stammer his name, your voice impossibly quiet, overflowing with uncertainty and a mix of fear and desire. He didn't seem to mind. He smiled at you, his breath washing over your mouth and nose like a sweet rum, leaving you light-headed. You squeezed your thighs together as tight as you could, desperate to stifle the growing heat at your core.
He felt it, your nervous shifting and the wild beating of your heart as he cruised a hand along your body, from your hip and then over your breast to clutch the back of your neck. He rubbed his thumb over your racing pulse. "Has anyone ever kissed you like this before? Pushed you against a wall, touched you, told you how beautiful you are?"
Your face burned. Eddie knew that you'd been kissed before; you'd told him as much. But you'd also told him you were a virgin. At twenty-four, you'd almost grown out of being embarrassed by the fact.Â
"No," you answered in a low exhale, trying to duck your head to avoid his smouldering stare. His eyes were blown with lust, almost black as coal, as he pushed his thumb against your chin, forcing you to look at him.Â
He leaned in closer, the feel of him like a weighted blanket on your chest, making it harder to breathe but in a pleasant way. It made your head fuzzy, like floating in a beautiful daydream, except his lips ghosted over yours. The faintest of touches had reality snapping into place around you.
"Never, ever?" Eddie whispered, his lips brushing, tugging, teasing yours. He was so close that he'd invaded all your senses until all you saw, heard, and breathed was him. He held fast when he wanted to move. Eddie waited for someone to give in to desire and bring the other into the flames. He wanted and needed it to be you.
The tiny whimper you made shot through him, racing through his blood like a bolt of electricity until his cock throbbed. And then you took the plunge, a hand at the back of his neck, the other hauling him in by that pretty studded jacket so you could brush your mouth against his.
It was all he neededâa silent confession, unspoken permission.
Eddie pushed against you until you felt the studs of his leather jacket and his dangling chains pressing into you through your clothing, your dress suddenly restrictive and in the way. His hands were everywhere, cupping your face, running through your hair. And then he dropped to his knees with a thud, pressing kisses down your stomach, leaving wet marks against the fabric of your dress as he ran his hands up the backs of your legs.
"No one ever touched you like this?"
You felt like you were going up in flames. His touch was fire licking your skin, beautiful and pure, leaving you trembling. His hands moved up the back of your thighs, and when his mouth found your belly button, tongue swirling once, then twice, you grabbed him by the shoulders to steady yourself.
"Words, sweet girl. I need you to answer," he said in a husky tone, pinching the back of your thigh to bring you out of your mind and into the moment. He looked at you from beneath his impossibly dark lashes, his eyes dark, twinkling with mischief.
"Never," you managed to gasp when his hands began drifting high, pushing your dress up until he could bunch it at your hips. And then he was face-to-face with your panties, groaning dramatically, making a sound that would make a pornstar blush.Â
"Have mercy," Eddie moaned, his breath hot against your mound even through the barrier of clothing. His eyes moved back to yours, and you flushed with embarrassment. He was staring at you like he wanted to devour you. "Even your fucking panties are adorable. That little bow? I'm going to take my time unwrapping this present."
Yet, despite this admission, he didn't take his time.
His mouth landed on your clothed cunt without a preamble. Your knees shook and threatened to give out as he worked his tongue against the wet fabric, tasting your arousal and letting it slide down his throat like a fine wine. Eddie found that virgins were quick to get wet. His calloused fingers kneaded the globes of your arse, pulling you closer, his talented tongue pushing your panties into your slit so he could tease your clit with gentle licks.
You bit your knuckles to stifle the sounds of your moans as pleasure snaked through your veins, creeping through your bloodstream until you broke into a sweat.
"Put your hands in my hair," he demanded with a rough voice, and like a mindless fool, you complied. His hair was a mess of wild curls that you pulled on, sinking your fingers deep into his plush locks when he started to work your panties down your thighs. "Good girl."
"Oh god." As the fabric pooled at your ankles, your head hit the door with a soft thud. You were like putty in his handsâwilling to walk through the fires of hell if it meant he'd keep touching you. Eddie freed one of your ankles and threw your leg over his shoulder, bringing you closer.
Words could not describe the feeling of his tongue against your slick folds or the sensation of the tip flicking against your clit. It was like lightning arched through the sky to melt the skin from your bones. You were burning up. And he'd lit the match.
Eddie was loud and messy, lewd. The sounds that clawed up his throat were pornographic. Each wet schlick of his mouth was accompanied by a throaty moan as he sucked your clit and teased your throbbing hole with the tip of his tongue.
It was an out-of-body experienceâyou never realised you could feel this good. Eddie held you by the back of the thighs, his grip firm, pulling you onto his tongue until your flesh goosepipmpled beneath his touch. You could have collapsed when he withdrew, a line of saliva connecting the tip of his tongue to your clit.
"Words, pretty girl. You gotta use them, or I'm going to stop."
You whined desperately, weaving your fingers deeper into his wild hair. "Please don't stop, Eddie. . ."
"Then talk to me. Let me hear those pretty sounds."
He waited only a moment, his dark eyes staring into yours with the intensity of the sun. He took in your flushed cheeks and shallow breaths that made your chest heave. Then he resumed his meal. The sound you made in response was embarrassingâat least, it should have been. You should have wanted the ground to split open and swallow you. But you didn't.
"It's good,"Â you choked out, squeezing your eyes shut as he ran the flat of his tongue along your slit, the tip flicking your clit in a delicious way that made your hips twitch; forward, then back, like you wanted him to eat you alive but also to escape.Â
The feeling was exquisiteâlike nothing you had ever feltâknocking the air from your lungs, making the muscles in your legs tense and your core weep. Your whole body jerked under his tongue, a shiver shaking your spine, your bones turning to jelly as he licked and sucked your drenched cunt. "Oh god. . . I think. . . IâI'm close."
You'd had orgasms before, but nothing quite like this. It was a slow build, each swipe of Eddie's tongue amplifying the pressure between your hips, sending jolts of electricity through your veins until your nerves crackled and popped. It was difficult to describe; you could taste the words on the tip of your tongue, but they melted away with each moan he drew from your lips.
And then it spread out through your body, a searing warmth that threatened once more to melt the skin from your bones.
"You're so wet, sweetness, m'fucking drowning here,"Â Eddie said. Even though his words were vulgar, the low growl with which he spoke sent you tumbling down the other side of pleasure. The first wave zinged through you, knocking the air from your lungs and sparking every one of your nerves to life.
You bit your knuckles hard until you tasted blood, but the flavour was quickly lost as the second wave seared through your limbs. Eddie didn't stopânot once. Each swipe of his tongue against your clit, each push of it into your virginal hole, sent wisps of fire shooting through your veins, adding stars and galaxies bursting to life behind your scrunched-shut eyes.
When you returned to earth, you found yourself trembling, his strong hands the pillars that kept you upright. Eddie kissed his way back up your body, slowly working your dress up as he went until he could pull it over your head. He threw it over his shoulder, the fabric a distant memory as it hit the ground, lost and now forgotten.
"No one ever made you cum before, have they?"Â He whispered, his breath hot, his smirk feral, as he teased his lips along the slope of your neck. You whined when your bare cunt rubbed against his dark denim jeans, the rough drag of the rips and tears against your lips sending you hurtling toward the sky once more.
"No,"Â you managed to say before catching his mouth for a wild, clumsy kiss. Eddie happily obliged, pushing his tongue into your mouth and licking your teeth so you tasted yourself.
"Touch me. . ."
"What do good girls say?"
"Please."
You would die if he didn't touch you in the next three seconds. You would collapse to the ground, melt into a puddle at his feet, and literally die.
Thankfully, he took pity on you.Â
Eddie kissed you deeply, with the fire of a thousand suns; his hot breath stole through your lungs when he swallowed your moans, leaving you on the verge of combustion. You felt lost in him, touching him here, there, and everywhere as you tried to strip him. Eddie didn't let you. He grabbed your wrists and held them at the small of your back, and he moved you both across the room.
Your lips never once parted. The moment was composed of hot breaths, searing kisses, and teasing bites, weakening your knees terribly. Eddie fell back into a high chair in front of the make-up mirrors. You were desperate to climb into his lap, to wind your legs around him and leech the warmth from his chest, but instead, he turned you and pulled you into his lap, back to chest.
"Eddie,"Â you whispered his name in a sigh, heady with desire. "I want more. . ."
He pressed a kiss against the shell of your ear, smiling in response. His lips were wet, his mouth wanting as he lowered it to your next, sucking a mark into your plush skin. "Open your eyes, sweetness."
Eddie hooked your knees over his thighs, spreading you open and exposing you to the mirror. The tips of his fingers ghosted along the crease of your inner thigh, making your breath hitch in anticipation. "You're beautiful," he said with a hum, nuzzling his nose into your hair. You caught his eyes in the reflection and saw the stark desire that had turned his pupils black, the hunger.
And you saw the expression mirrored in your own reflection. Your skin was flushed the subtlest shade of pink, pussy glistening with arousal. Eddie honestly thought you were the prettiest thing he'd ever fucking seen; so sweet, so innocent.
The stretch of his thick fingers was immediately exquisite, the slick of your arousal coating them entirely. Eddie watched the mirror, transfixed by the way it dropped from around his fingers, sliding down the curve of your ass to darken his denim jeans.
He felt you clench around him, tension seeping through your body as the pain collided with pleasure, twisting through your veins like snakes, intertwined, threatening to consume you from the inside out. You cried out when he crooked them, hips rising in search of more; his other hand cruised up your body, the soft swell of your stomach, cupping a tit in the palm of his hand, thumb teasing your nipple into a hardened peak.
Eddie growled against your neck. He was as hard as a rock, and each jolt of your hips had your arse rutting against his aching cock. You reached back to grab his hair, winding your fingers through his wild curls as the pleasure mounted. You were a guitar, and he had years of practice. He watched the rapid rise and fall of your chest, the way you couldn't sit still as he fucked his fingers in and out of your cunt, the way you clawed at his jeans.
You put a hand over your mouth to stifle the way you moan, loud, wantonly, like a whore. You felt dirtyâlike this was a scandalous secret. The thought of being found was erotically terrifying.
"You getting close, sweetness?"Â Eddie asked; no, he growled the words against your neck, teeth clipping the sensitive skin. "I can feel it. You're squeezing my fingers so fucking tight. Are you thinking about my cock? How much better it'll feel than my fingers?"
As though to emphasise his words, his thrust against you, his erection hard against the globes of your arse, leaving him moaning as his own muscles twisted with desire, pure liquid heat pouring through his bones.
"Cum for me, baby."
He wasn't asking; no, he was demanding.
