Since semester has ended for me, have something I have been cooking for a couple of weeks:
Joker Out and Käärijä as shit my friends have said:
(Kind of long so it goes under the cut)
Kris: I'm the wall god punches when he's mad
-
Jan, while searching a song to sing in the karaoke: Peru :) ... wait
-
Bojan, filling out a form: is m for male or mujer?
-
Kris: if there was an idiot competition, Bojan would be the judge
-
Nace: good luck with your algebra homework!
Jan: how did you know it was algebra? (He wrote algebra on top of the page)
-
(Right before a test)
Everyone else: studying
Jure: well... what do we do now?
Jere: idk dude, join my game
-
Bojan: can you pass the meat for the grill?
Kris: what am I your fucking wife?
-
Nace, after joining the band: if someone were to come out of the closet here... I would say it would be Jan
Bojan: come out of what closet? The one made out of glass?
-
Bojan, to Kris: why would you need a toxic girlfriend when you have me
-
Jure: I don't know if I should go to pride with you guys, I'm straight
Kris: you can come as an ally and support everyone!
-at pride-
Jure: -making out with a guy-
Kris: not THAT much of an ally
-
Kris, pointing at the rest of the band: I'm sorry if my children ever missbehave, if they do, just call me, I'll put them in time out
-
Jan: Bojan, if you don't stop I'm dropping you off to Jere so his lovesick ass can sort you out
-
Interviewer: what is the first word you think of when I say eurovision?
Kris: money
Jure: microphone trophy
Bojan: talent
Jan: reciting poetry
-like 10 minutes after the interview-
Jan: why tf did I say reciting poetry?
-
Jan: the way to know that kris is really drunk is when he starts being nice to bojan
-
Nace: if you don't want to come to pride with us, you can come to the afterparty!
Jure: that's not really his type of party
Homophbojan: yeah, invite me to a party for normal people next time
(I should clarify that the friend who said this is an ally and they were joking, they are actually really cool and respectful towards queer people)
-
Jesse: Jere got really drunk at the party and he was talking about Bojan and started crying because he missed him
-
Bojan: I like people that have a presence, that's why I started dating jere
Nace: yeah, I remember the first time I saw him in person I went "oh, that's jere"
Bojan: exactly! ....... and then he opens his mouth
-
Jan: I don't care at this point, a car can run me over before I turn this demo in and I would be fine -walks into oncoming traffic-
-
Jere: what are you guys doing?
Kris: cutting a cake with a ruler
Bojan: welcome to the balkans
-
Bojan: I need to do my duolingo lesson!
Nace: Bojan, you're so drunk you threw up on the street, don't do your duolingo lesson now
Bojan: I have priorities
-
Jere, walking into a surprise anniversary gift Bojan was making: hi— what's that?
Jure: it's a mass hallucination don't worry about it :)
-
Jesse: Bojan branded my boy like a cow! (Jere's wearing a bracelet that says "are you?")
-
Jere: if this whole music thing doesn't work out, I'm moving to Thailand and raising fish
#i have so many more but they don't translate well into english so 😭#anyways enjoy they are dumbasses and i love them#joker out#käärijä

Hiiiiii I love your blog and your writing so much.
I know you have a hc that Sevika is bilingual, can you elaborate on that? Who taught her Spanish? Did she grow up speaking it? Does she do that thing where she forgets the English word for something and has to make up something to describe it? Does she say things in Spanish when people ask her to tell them something knowing they don’t speak Spanish so she can go “what, I told you already?”
Also I would die if she referred to me as “mi mujer” 😭😭😭
Thank you, have a great day!
Hello, anon! Thank you for the kind words 😄
So, yeah I think I mentioned this in a random throwaway Sevika headcanon post and haven't ever elaborated on this. But yes...
One of my headcanons for Sevika is that she is trilingual, and that stems from her family. First and foremost, I don't play League and I don't know shit about League lore outside of the bits of research I did to write for some Sevika stuff. I do see that League lore is incredibly detailed and expansive (which is fascinating to me) but there's still a lot that hasn't been explained from what I can tell? It looks like there are multiple languages that exist in Runeterra, which makes sense considering how many sentient races and ethnic groups there are. So let's talk about that for a second so you can understand my thought process on this. Walk with me here.
First off, this is, of course, a fantasy universe so the concept of languages and the countries they come from don't exist in that universe in the same way they do here. For example, there is no country called Spain, and therefore, there is no language called Spanish. So how does that work in my head? Easy. Use an existing language as a proxy for a fantasy one ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I mean...are the characters speaking English in Arcane? Clearly no, because Germanic languages and the countries they derive from don't exist. They're speaking whatever local language exists in that universe. I figured why not add some other IRL languages for flavor? So with that being said, this is where we get to another headcanon.
If we're going by ethnic background, I like to imagine Sevika as Afro-Latino from her father's side and South Asian through her mother. Why? Her VA, Amirah Vann, is Afro-Latina (African American father and Puerto Rican mother) and speaks fluent Spanish. Sevika's name appears to be Indian in origin and I mean...like look at her lol. She is clearly meant to be, in our world, South Asian, most likely Indian. I obviously do not know what region of Runeterra this ethnic background would translate to. Maybe Shurima???
Given that background (and the bit of trivia about her VA), that's how I came up with her being trilingual. Learned all three languages growing up in the home. "Spanish" from her father, and a third language I haven't decided yet (Hindi? Urdu? Sanskrit? Punjabi? Don't know yet, need to research) from her mother.
Why? Well...why not lol. Truthfully, I thought it'd be interesting to make up some additional reasons why she's so fit to be Silco's right hand. Piltover and Zaun are port cities, and being port cities, you're going to come across a lot of people from a lot of different cultures who speak a lot of different languages. Basically the idea here is that Silco chose her as his second because of a variety of factors:
Multilingual, helps with gaining trust and securing deals
Trusted patron at The Last Drop
Same end goal of liberating Zaun
Loyalty
Can hold her own if shit goes south
Intimidating (she's fucking huge and can beat your ass)
Good at reading people
Surprisingly good at negotiation when she does bother speaking
And now that we know that Sevika herself was the one handling the majority of the deals (she said so herself in Season 2), I like this headcanon even more lmfao. Like here's an excerpt from an unreleased piece of writing I did that mentioned it:
The downside here ofc is that I, personally, only speak one language lol. I took Japanese in high school for 4 years and can't remember much except how to read hiragana and katakana (should have studied more!). I am absolutely going to have a lot of blindspots when it comes to things that only bilingual folks or folks who speak more than one language experience, and that is something that would be worth doing a bit more research on. Quirks like the ones you mentioned are things I forget that people experience 😅
That is a bit long so sorry for that, but I hope this answers your questions well.
Keep in mind: these are just headcanons. That's it. This is for fun. If you think something different, then do you!

Can you do a Bay!TMNT X reader that doesn't have an accent normally but when they get upset that shit just appears outta thin air and they can barely understand them? Thank you!!
{🩷Firecracker🩷}
Anonymous on Tumblr asked for, "Can you do a Bay!TMNT X reader that doesn't have an accent normally but when they get upset that shit just appears outta thin air and they can barely understand them? Thank you!!" It's short but here you go anyway 😭?
The turtles met reader when they were younger. Around seventeen turning eighteen. Now being twenty-six, they're more open and casual around the turtles.
When they first met, reader wanted the boys to feel comfortable seeing as they didn't have many human friends to begin with. So when their accent came up, the turtles couldn't tell. Reader spoke English well enough so they couldn't pick up on it.
Especially when they had practically spent years around them. However, when Vincent offers reader a job at the station she notices that if a cop or office person is dumb, and reader got mad at it, they would mumble in their native language and have an after-accent longer in their English.
Vincent wasn't one to judge, her wife's best friend was Venezuelan and had an accent in moments. It only made her curious about the alliance ship between them and the turtle brothers.
"Where is reader from?" When Vincent asked them that, it threw the boys through loops. They hadn't thought about you not being from a different origin. Yeah, you were raised in the U.S. but you could've spent the majority of it speaking your native tongue, or you had moved to the United States before meeting them in the late teenage years.
Naturally, they tried paying more attention to how you spoke. How your grammar would come out. The possibility of your tone being off without trying to sound sarcastic or overzealous. Donnie had been close to plucking a hair of you and finding your ancestry but Leo guilt-tripped him.
"You didn't like it when they asked for a shell scute for science purposes." He made a good point sadly.
Two weeks later, however, reader had cussed out the TV that had a baseball game on. It was kinda funny watching them get pissed at the TV in their native language.
"What did you say?" Leo asked through his shit-eating grin. Even though Donnie was secretly recording and translating it into English.
"They said, 'Fucking idiot, you need glasses. You dumb bastards.'" Reader whipped their head to Donnie so fast it made Raph and Mikey crack up.
"You know (insert language)?" Donnie raised his translator and gained an understanding look from reader. "How come you don't translate everything I say?"
"Then there's no point in trying to learn about it." With that, reader gained a softer expression, before getting sucked back into the game and got annoyed again.

I believe Cheating Men must die is a great story
It adds wonderful twists in existing tropes and genres. The protag isn't perfect but she's great, she likes eliminating assholes, which is valid
It's also interesting how Su Luxia doesn't have an identity issue since she lives under so many identities but I guess she's hardened for the job
For everyone who hasn't read Cheating Men Must Die (comic "Wan Zha Chao Huang" (万渣朝凰) by Shi Dai Man Wang (时代漫王)), this is an open invitation for y'all to read it. Genre: quick transmigration, revenge story. Basically your ex-cannon fodder MC, Su Luxia, is a System agent who transmigrates (isekais/ world hops) into the bodies of women of each world who are wronged by the Male Lead, Female Lead, another canon fodder, author, etc and changes their fate. I forgot how many chapters of the manhua there are presently but I believe the freshest ones that are still being updated in Mandarin Chinese are over 700+ chapters of art. (The MTL offers English translation, but y'all can also peep at other sites for ENG fantranslations.)
There are a couple of different summaries but I love this summary the best:
Don't you think that all cheating sc*m need to die? Su Luxia, an intern pro working in a transmigration agency, doesn't believe in that. For her, all cheating bastards need to rot in hell before they die. Or else they won't suffer the taste of their own medicine! Using elaborate means, she beats up countless cheating bastards and b*tches. Su Luxia sneers... "People take everything they get for granted. The more they get, the more they don't strive for it. An unrequited love is an example. There is always a sc*m who takes advantage. Since they brought this upon themselves..." She studies her face in the mirror and smirks, "... let them have a taste of their own medicine." System: "You're making that scary face again!" Follow our female main lead, Su Lüxia, who is bound to the Female Lead Counterattack System and transmigrates to several small worlds beating up countless sc*m.
Art bait for y'all who are still hesitating (and some of my favorite arcs, and those that'd surprised me like the arc where she transmigrated into the Second Male Lead):
RE: I have to agree! Ty for the Ask, @bernkastel11! I had a response ready for ya the day I saw this in my inbox and literally typed a long essay with links, but lo and behold tumblr ate it. 😭 But finally I have the motivation for a take 2. Honestly the manhua is a guilty pleasure of mine. The art's great (we definitely see the artist improve over time with each arc...even with the obviously borrowed assets and sometimes janky perspective, hahaha) and I love how Su Luxia is a badass femme fatale (white lotus & green tea b*tch), as well as her friendship with her cute talking hamster System. I also love how the artist is giving variety; it's not all just kicking butt, chewing bubble gum, finding romance. She's become an empress, made a friendship with the exorcist Female Lead, become a mother, led revolutions, survived a death game, became a guy, made a Male Lead yandere and obsess over her to the point of trying to hunt her down in whichever world it is, has some...questionable sapphic overtones, transmigrated into a BL novel, revisited some worlds with reoccurring characters, etc. They satirize a lot of preexisting tropes, and I love it when artists and writers have fun with the meta. I also like how they're slowly expanding on the lore of her interest with previous System agent Zero (the whole reason why Su Luxia became a System agent).
"It's also interesting how Su Luxia doesn't have an identity issue since she lives under so many identities but I guess she's hardened for the job"
The thing about QTs in general is the artist or author usually don't put much emphasis on the consequences of transmigrating so many times into other people's bodies. It's just a staple of the genre (because they're usually portrayed as badass, cunning, and OP, what have you with a strong willpower to assume all these identities, overcome challenges, and not experience dysphoria). So far I think the only writer I can think of off the top of my head that addresses it is: The Exhausting Reality of Novel Transmigration (novel / manhwa). I highly rec it. So far it is one of the few works where they explore that concept of how mentally exhausting it is adopting another person's identity as well as the consequences of "the characters" finding out (it's not your usual "oh, you hopped into my dead daughter's body and assumed her identity? Well la de dah, guess you're my daughter now." No, we're talking about the mother suspecting, finding out, being horrified, and having a mental breakdown trying to exorcise "the evil spirit" who's taken possession of her daughter's body). It also touches on the danger of an ordinary woman transmigrating into the body of a Female Lead in an R18+ novel where the Male Lead is a yandere.
Since you'd mentioned CMMD, I can give you several other links:
Cheating Men Must Die animated audio version of the first few arcs (King of the Phoenix), comes with ENG subs
Mission in Parallel 2022 Chinese short drama (it's the late 1910s socialite arc where she transmigrates as the overweight nightclub owner & wife of the abusive husband who gets seduced by a singer who's also a transmigrator), comes with ENG subs
Cheating Men Must Die (2022)(it's the arc where she transmigrates into the world where she's the villainess and the CEO Male Lead is self-aware, and the author has signed with the evil System trying to kill off Su Luxia so that she herself can transmigrate into the body of her own FL), comes with ENG subs
#cheating men must die#manga rec#The Exhausting Reality of Novel Transmigration#reading recommendations#ask#ty for the ask <3#bernkastel1#it's so nice to find another CMMD enthusiast; usually I'm the one reccing CMMD to everyone else hahahaha#phoenix talks

More thoughts anon here, if I think of more definitely sending lol
The laughing from Sirius because he knows that the Renegades are double fucked.
That terrible orc that needs his hands cut off, and the fear of him. I could feel that fear. Not saying his name because he doesn't deserve it 😂 Also bravo for making me feel such animosity towards a fictional character.
Ikar. I feel so bad for him. He's like a child still due to trauma and I just wanna steal him away. I also felt kind of bad for Eleven because of his missing comrade. He's still an ass though lol
THE DESTRUCTION omg the destruction. I could see it all so clearly. Your writing makes it so easy to visualize the scene. Hell hath no fury like a mother whose child you kidnapped.
I wanna give Sirius some pets and clean him up. I bet he's all matted from being locked up. I felt bad for him before too when MC got branded. Now that I know Ash can see through his eyes that makes the reaction even more heartbreaking. I'm imagining how helpless Ash must feel right now too 😭
Also I want to give all of the other familiars baths and cuddles lol
THE calmness MC can posses because they know their mother is coming. Knowing that your parent loves you enough to destroy an entire camp to get to you. There is no doubt Elianna loves her child.
The kindness that MC can show despite being mistreated.
The humanness of the Renegades. They're bad guys, but there is more to it. How many of them, besides Ikar, were taken in the night and made to work that job.
You also write children and their emotions so well. I feel like I'm a kid when playing through it.
Anyway. Absolutely love this story and I was at the edge of my seat. I always buzz with excitement the whole time I read.
ALSO the cliffhanger, I'm even more excited.
Wow, your message left me speechless and with tears in my eyes! Thank you, thank you so much for your compliments! Wow, just Wow!
I'm embarrassed and also happy and very moved!
And relieved!!!
I was so afraid that my descriptions would go wrong and be misinterpreted.
wow...
It's great to know what you liked about this update! I love getting your feedback and opinions and just exchanging with you! On the subject of Eleven while we're at it…You might still feel bad. As for Uilan…I've got it covered and Mc is involved!
You'll also get some time with Ikar (on certain routes) and with Sirius. And of course, Elianna, Tobias and all the others will be back in the next update.
Well, it will depend on how much I write, by which I mean how much I write (I prefer to write smaller updates than some authors, so I don't have to fix too many bugs, and it's less painful).
I'm in my daydreaming phase right now. I'm working out the dialogue and action in my head before putting it down on paper and then computer and then doing the English translation so I'm sorry in advance if it's taking a bit long, but no worries!
Next time, destruction, redemption, solace, and encounters will be part of the story!
#Wow#That's some sweet sweet anon !!!!#I'm gonna cry#I'm crying#I'm ugly crying and you can't stop me#This is why I love writing#Thank you so much anon#You made my day !#Arielle ramble#Adoriel's Tears

Imo this is the most likely event for Sunday, and let me explain why. (leaks from the QSMP discord)
First of all, earlier Quackity mentioned being on a plane. Why is this relevant? Well the only way to get to Korea is by plane. However, 14 hours later, he tweeted that he had lied about the plane. Now why would he do this?
This is, of course, because BTS had been testing the mod and realized that Korean wasn't working. For some reason, whoever coded the translate mod had mixed up the language files and replaced Korean with Spanish, specifically Spanish with a Korean accent. (Tbf I don't blame them, the file was named something like QSMP_language_file_v3_finalFINALVERSION_KOR_Korean_Hangul_Accented_Spanish_ESPANOL, and obvi if ur screen is small the last part would get cut off).
Now Quackity is in a predicament. He's very smart, obviously, so he cancelled his plane immediately and actually got a 70% refund even though he was technically canceling within the 24hr window. And then he got in a call with admins. I was actually in this call (they added me on accident) and although I don't speak or understand Spanish I was able to comprehend everything perfectly (they were speaking English).
Basically, they were screwed. BTS themselves had scheduled out time to make a guest appearance on the QSMP, this was huge! MASSIVE!! But the translator wasn't working: what were they going to do? Now naturally my first instinct was oh, well they can speak English, right? But I should've held in my trust of Quackity and the entire admin team, bcuz their creativity and problem solving is as always off the charts.
One of the admins (not going to name anyone for privacy reasons) had been doing a project on their spare time. Eggsonas, of course, have been a trend on and off since the first adoption day. And this admin had been making all sorts of models. It just so happened, by a stroke of luck, that they had made 7 bts eggs!!!!! Everyone was so excited about it, the entire call was shouting for a good minute lol. I actually had to take out my earbuds.
Eggs, of course, cannot speak. This solved the translator problem flawlessly, as the sign and book translators were working as normal. It also gave the BTS members an extra 2 hours to play on the server! (previously their managers had allocated 2 hours for them to find/create minecraft skins, which obviously is now unneeded.) It's a win-win-win.
Now on to analyzing the teasers: firstly, you'll notice the Update accounts tweets. These are, of course, referencing how bts have both touched and eaten ice and ice cream. Also, as true fans will know, bts just recently broke their freezer and had to mop everything up. It's a nice red herring given the previous ice imagery in teasers, and we all know Quackity loves his trickery.
Secondly, the seven outlined in grass. Grass has been a prominent feature in many BTS music videos. Some say it's even a staple of their work. For example, in their 4th music video there is grass on the ground, to represent how growing up has made them more grounded. Nextly, the seven. Obviously there are seven members, but combined with grass this is actually a double hint: BTS was active for seven years between 2013 and 2020 during which they released songs. This is a special number for them because of these events.
Now obviously, I don't have all the answers. My prediction on the discourse, for example, was completely made up. But i hope this gives you all a sense of what to expect come Sunday. (also please don't tell any qsmp admins I'm leaking this info 😭😭😭😭)
#qsmp#Qsmp theories#This information is untrue and a piece of creative writing and my lunch break ended 40 minutes ago help.#On my god fit is destroying Spreens house is this him finally letting go?

NieR Orchestra Concert 12024 [the end of data] (London, 15/2/2024)
NieR concert was incredible just as expected. Honestly, from the moment I got there - the cosplayers, the general atmosphere, it was just a good place to be surrounded by NieR nerds lmao. So many people happy to chat with the stranger next to them, kind of a con vibe.
But of course we were there for the music! And it was fuckin amazing. The emi evans/j'nique nicole duets😭These were special orchestral arrangements specifically for this concert, and the way the sound of the orchestra fills the space, how you can see a phrase physically ripple across the orchestra... I don't get to go to a lot of concerts but I really should try to go more often, because it's something else to hear orchestral music.
below: further comments on the concert, lots of cosplay photos.
The multimedia elements also worked really well - every piece was accompanied with backing videos using either demosceney abstract visuals or images from the games, along with text that told a short story over the course of the concert, with some segments voice acted by the English voices of 2B and 9S (Kira Buckland and Kyle McCarley, who have previously made their own performances of the original Japan-only concert readings). I won't spoil the story in this post since there are still concerts to come, but it was... not that substantial I'll admit, but sweet, and a nice framing device to create a flow through the songs and various moments from the games.
Hearing J'nique Nicole's voice live though, that was incredible. Emi Evans was there just as last time, and just as amazing as always - but this time we had both of them on stage together, and it was absolutely sublime. We all went wild. They performed duets in several songs, with the standouts naturally being A Beautiful Song, Ashes of Dreams, and of course Weight of the World. I think we all thought that was the end because we gave it a standing ovation but then Emi came back out to perform Kainé. After that we got into the groove of standing up and stood up again like three more times lol.
Yoko Taro and Yosuke Saito showed up at the end and made a bunch of rapidfire jokes in Japanese that the translator couldn't keep up with, bless her. But we got to give them like the fourth standing ovation of the night, and made a lot of noise when Yoko Taro suggested it would persuade the president of Squeenix to fund a sequel. I'm sure they appreciated it lmao. I think it must be so weird for Yoko Taro to go from someone with a career of niche, unsuccessful games to being internationally renowned to the point that a massive auditorium full of people in multiple countries will go absolutely nuts just to hear him speak a language we mostly don't speak.
Good mix of people who were at a NieR concert for the first time and people who'd been to the last one. There was a guy near me who had apparently been to the Berlin concert just a few days before, and snagged a ticket for this one literally yesterday just to get it again with better acoustics. I respect it lol. Everyone I spoke to was remarkably friendly - last time I went to one of these things I felt really nervous about approaching anyone but it seems I've gotten better about that kind of thing in the last few years. Anyway, people had come from all over - I chatted with a pair of Americans from Boston all the way down the merch line.
Here are some pictures, mostly of cosplayers. I am still getting used to shooting with the DSLR my friend gave me, so not all of these came out perfectly steady and some of them the exposure wasn't right,, but there are some nice ones in here...
bokeeeeehhhhhhhhh... I spoke a bit to the owner of this 9S doll. Her mum was there too, and it turns out she's a haberdasher who makes cosplays for her daughters and has now done over 70. That's a legendary mum right there.
The 9S cosplayer here gave me his instagram. he's a pro photographer so I feel a little embarassed at the quality of the photos I took of him ^^'
I got some merch too, since I understand it's the main way events like this support themselves.
That Kainé thing isn't a print, it's a vinyl record with a few arrangements of Kainé. Though I was totally prepared to buy it as a print because it's a lovely drawing. I don't actually own a record player, but one day I'll surely listen to it ^^'
I was too fatigued to make a cosplay this time, but I'm sure there will be another concert and next time, for sure, I will go as Devola or Popola. Unless Yoko Taro comes up with another redhead character in the meantime lmao.
#nier#nier automata#nier replicant#nier reincarnation#nier orchestra concert#if you're in any of those photos please let me know! i'm gonna post them on instagram and twitter too

ES21 japanese volumes - part 1/??
part 2 >>
Sooooo I recently got my hands on the complete Eyeshield 21 manga series in Japanese and as someone who's only ever read the story through fan-translations on dodgy websites online, I wanted to go through and "live" blog about it, so to speak. I thought it would be interesting to see the changes between the languages and where the fan-translations likely fail with mistranslations. (No shade btw, I think fan-translations are great both as a hobby and the fact that they're doing their work for free, but it's also a reality that the vast majority of fan-translators are amateurs, many of whom don't fluently speak the language they're translating, so there's bound to be mistakes!) Also, I wanna know what they're originally saying because I’m nosey <3
I know the official English translation by VIS is allegedly pretty decent, bar the toning down of some things (like Hiruma's language lol) so if you've had the chance to read the official version, feel free to chime in on differences with the fan-translation that I'll be referencing, or potential differences between the Japanese version too!
And finally, while I am half Japanese and grew up there, tragically my language skills are imperfect. I speak it, but my vocabulary isn't very robust, so I do look up the definitions for a lot of words and kanji, as well as more nuanced connotations or references that may go over my head. Bilingual problems <3 But again, it's good practice for me and I think it'll be kind of fun!
Right off the bat, this page. What it’s saying is essentially, “You better come out and play (in the) American Football match!” But because Japanese syntax is different from English, it’s structured like “American Football Match you better play!!” The translator was confused by the final line, because in Japanese a way to say ‘participating in a match’ is by using 出る which means to ‘go out’— sort of like ‘go out (into) the match’. Maybe a better option would have been ‘get the fuck out and play!!” or just “you better fucking play!!”. It still keeps the overall sentence structure which sounds awkward in English, but at least it gets the meaning across.
(I’m not gonna get into every little mistranslation btw, because that would take forever, but I felt that was a good way to explain how frequently there are little mistakes like this.)
Putting the rest under a cut because I imagine this will get long
Look at our boy <3 So as you know, we start our story with Sena Kobayakawa timidly seeing if he passed his high school entrance exam into Deimon High School, with his childhood friend/older sister figure, Mamori Anezaki lending moral support.
In the third panel, what Sena says is actually “I feel like I’ve been praised for the first time in 10 years—” (maybe they changed it because that was too pathetic 😭) Then in the fourth panel, what Mamori says is more along the lines of “And to think you were a total mess in math and English… It’s all thanks to Mamori-sensei!”
Also I want to point out that Mamori is a little cheekier in the first few chapters. Like obviously still kind and nurturing in personality (her name is literally ‘to protect’), but she teases Sena and feels more like an older sister than like, an overprotective mom lol. Miss that for her 😔
Then along comes our kind senpai to accost our clueless protag...
There’s no mistranslation, but I just wanted to mention that the way Hiruma talks in Japanese is so funny? Like in panel 1, he’s speaking with a dramatic affect, he sounds like some sort of npc in a jrpg giving the protag a quest. And then in panel 2, his ‘of course!’ is this shortened, slang version of the word that sounds almost cute and very modern after the previous line. Hiruma uses a lot of slang in general, though I can’t say if any of it is like, common or used by teenagers (of the time, anyway) or if it’s just Hiruma-isms.
(Look at Kurita doing the sign of the cross in panel 3 😂)
I can’t believe Hiruma managed to physically emulate the experience of contracting some shady internet virus…..
Something that’s done with Hiruma’s dialogue a lot (it’s done w/ other characters too, but most often with Hiruma) is where there’ll be a word/term in kanji that means one thing and pronounced in a certain way, but then the furigana (so the phonetic pronounciation, basically) next to it says something different. Now, in some stories (like Berserk for my pals out there), this is used to create poignant, layered meanings in the text. In ES21 however, it’s mostly used for sports manga flavor. For example, in the above page in Hiruma’s spam fax message, he uses the word 作戦, which means tactics or strategy, and is pronounced: “sa - ku - se - nn” さ-く-せ-ん. But the furigana next to that word reads タクティクス which is quite literally just the English word ‘tactics’ spelled phonetically in Japanese lol (aka a loanword).
He does this A LOT, most frequently with sports terminology, where the kanji are pretty dense, technical terms, and the furigana a loanword version of the same meaning. (though now that I think about it, it might also be because while パワー (power) and スピード (speed) are frequently used and well known loanwords to the average Japanese person, タクティクス (tactics) might be more obscure, so the kanji is there to like, clarify the meaning? 🤔)
Also I love all the early 2000’s tech we see in the early chapters— flip phones and fax machines galore! Even within the later segments of the series, the flip phones start to magically get more advanced, but in my heart ES21 takes place in like, 2003. If they ever do a remake of the anime (which is unlikely to say the least) I’d want them to maintain the early 00’s vibes. It just wouldn’t be the same if everyone had smart phones.
Skipping ahead a few pages, I remember this bit never really made sense, but I got enough of the general gist that I kind of shrugged and moved along. But!! the translation is just making stuff up here?
So for context: it’s Sena’s first day at Deimon, and Mamori (who’s a grade above him) advises him to make proper friends this year, since he has a history of only ‘hanging out’ with shitty bullies who used him as an errand boy.
In the English translation, Sena seems to get a text from a mystery number, telling him to pay up for a bet we never saw happening. He goes to meet up with the texter, who we assume at this point is a previous aquaintence, since he had Sena's number? Maybe one of those bullies that Sena hung out with from middle school? They make Sena go and get them an unspecified thing, but because Sena ran there and back so quickly, they don't believe that Sena actually went, and is lying when he says they were sold out. They drag Sena to a small shed to beat him up, and in the last panel of the third page, Sena says that he's been their errand boy since kindergarden?
So for a number of years I was under the impression that the Ha-ha brothers knew Sena from before the series, even though that never seemed to come up in the rest of the story.
But in the original version, Sena is actually getting a text from Mamori-- which makes sense because it was established earlier that his cell phone is brand new and he only has Mamori's number in his contacts. Mamori's text says: "If someone tries to make you run their errands, tell them 'let's decide by rock-paper-scissors!'" Sena is understandably kind of embarrassed by this, and mutters to himself that he's not a kid anymore.
Then it cuts to Sena being picked on to be an errand boy lmao. Presumably this is because Sena just looks like an easy target to bullies, not because of any previous aquaintence rip. The blond bully tells Sena to go buy them bread (which might sound weird, but Japan has a lot of tasty snack breads that they sell everywhere). In panels 2+3 of the second page, Sena timidly tries to bring up the rock-paper-scissors thing, but is intimidated into giving up and just doing what he's told.
Again, they don't believe that Sena actually went all the way to the school store and back with how quick he was, so they decide to beat him up in the shed. As he's being dragged, Sena says, "It really was sold out! I've gotten used to being an errand boy since kindergarden, so I've just gotten fast--!"
So yeah, if there were any other people who've only read fan-translations and were confused by this bit, there you go.
oh you just know it smelled like ass in here.....
(I never noticed the shotgun propped against the desk on the right before lol, idk why I'm surprised, but Hiruma really just left his Actual Guns lying around huh?)
(2nd pic - Kurita: "New club applicants!!?")
There he is!! Our boy Kurita!! I do miss when he occassionally had like, more human features lol. As much as I love his big ol' smiley face, it does rub me the wrong way when the fat characters (because Komusubi falls into this too) are the only ones with anpanman faces.
(anpanman, for the uninitiated)
(Kurita: "To literally clash with the opponent in order to pursue a goal together with everyone-- that moment is exhilerating!")
Aw look at Sena feeling inspired! Honestly I really love how Kurita is Sena's first friend he makes in the series, and that vibe in the early chapters where it's just Sena, Kurita and Hiruma is so much fun <3
(P1: Kurita: "Way to go Sena!" Imaginary Coach: "It's thanks to you that we could participate in the Christmas Bowl!" Mamori: "You're so cool Sena!"
P2: Mamori: "You have to make the first move!" Sena: "U-um!"
P3: Sena: "Can I... be the team shumu*?" Kurita: "WHAAATT!? O-OF-OF COURSE!")
*Ok soooo I don't fully understand what a shumu is lol, or how you'd translate it to English. The word itself apparently means 'person in charge' so? The fan-translation just calls it the manager, but based on something Hiruma says later, I get the impression that the shumu and the manager are technically different roles? But when Mamori becomes the manager later, she takes on a lot of what are allegedly 'shumu tasks', along with Hiruma, so idk. If anyone's read the official VIS translation, feel free to chime in on how they did it, because I'd be curious to know!
That being said, adorable of Sena to think he could have handled that responsiblity at all 😂 our boy has many talents, but being smart and organized is not among them.
Ok fun feelings are over, it's time for pain.
(Sena looking at his contact list, having just added Kurita's number, then wham D: )
The three bullies from before were waiting to get revenge. The dialogue is a bit different in the original. Juumonji (the blond one) actually says: "That fatso a friend of yours, Sena? Tell me his contact info-- if you do that, we'll let you go." To which Sena timidly and reluctantly agrees. Then Kuroki (the dark haired one) says: "But do you think one bat will be enough? With that brute strength..." In the final panel, Juumonji says: "It's better with just one, since we're gonna call the police beforehand." Togano (with the glasses): "The police?"
Juumonji: "As long as we get him wrapped up in the fight, it'll be fine. We'll say we got these wounds from being assaulted by the fatso with the bat -- We'll get him disqualified from the American Football tournament." One of the others: "Ooohh, smart!"
I guess the overall sentiment isn't that different, but knowing that the initial demand was for Sena to hand over Kurita's contact info with the promise that they would spare him if he obeyed-- and that at first he agreed-- makes his change of heart feel even more significant.
(Sena: "IF YOU'RE GONNA HIT ME, THEN HIT ME!!! I'LL NEVER TELL YOU (Kurita's info)!!!")
Tell 'em Sena!! A part of me sort of wishes the story maintained this serious story beat instead of undercutting it with humor in the next panel (not shown here) but at the same time, ES21 is overall a more lighthearted, comedic story which I love it for, so I don't think I'd like it getting too angsty. I'll always have Berserk in my corner if I want some actual angst lol.
(1st pic: various sounds of surprise or pain, and in the last panel: "Oi, don't let him get away!"
2nd pic: Sena -- "No way!!!" Hiruma: "Hm? Oh it's that guy" )
Lol I do love the little details Murata included, like Kuroki taking a swing at Sena as he's biting Juumonji's hand but then totally missing in the fourth panel because Sena's so fast. Also I'm always on the lookout for the kinds of stuff Hiruma buys, snack wise. We know he loves sugarless gum, obv, and drinks coke based on that one time he bought some for himself, Kurita & Sena, but what else are in those bags? I want to know!!
--------
And lol apparently I'm only allowed 30 images per post rip, so I guess I'll end this here. I guess I can.... reblog and continue? Or I might just make another post for the next part 🤔 Besides this got way too long, so I'll have to be more brief in future posts lol.
I'm honestly not expecting more than like, five people to interact with this lol, but if anyone is interested in specific points of the story they want me to look at, please feel free to ask!
#eyeshield 21#es21#yeah this is not meta it's just.... stream of consciousness#as i ramble about eyeshield lmfao#and japanese practice that I'm inflicting on others#eyeshield 21 japanese readalong#is what i'm gonna tag it for my own sake#i guess#excuse any typos. *gun emoji* you didn't see any

have you heard kuro dubbed in any language other than english? or in any other asian language other than korean or chinese? well i found a persian one and it's so fucking bad that it's hilarious.
(also stay tuned to find out why the persian dub of kuroshitsuji being so bad has directly to do with anti-shipping sentiment and puritanism)
i would like to politely invite anyone who's ethnically from/lives in/speaks the language of a country with an ultraconservative government to contribute to this post if they know a dub of kuro (fandub or licenced by a company) in their language to contribute to this post (agree or disagree that policing media causes a drop in its quality and accessibility in other countries) but let's keep it civil. if you are not from a country like this but have something to say, feel free to add anything on, the conversation is open to all :)
so i just heard the homemade persian dub of kuro's first ep made by some young people who sound like they're in uni (probs 18-23 yr olds), tears have been flowing from my eyes for the past 20 mins
(link under the cut)
to save time, go watch the bits i linked below or just laugh at the whole thing (full link) but don't blame these kids for being awful at this or just skip to the end of the post. as i said, there is a reason this dub is so bad and no official dub exists and it has to do with... anti subculture?!?*
but first, the funny stuff
ciel's voice is awful but just listen to the goofy dub laugh seb's va did at the start I'M FUCKING SOBBING (00:15-00:35), and also not ciel's va MOANING after the op song (2:35) ??? i REPEAT the woman who VA'd ciel was fucking MOANING, the YAWN was the worst part, dub team shotacons???
also SHEEL FANTOMHAYO?? THE KID'S NAME WAS DUBBED AS SHEEL FANTOMHAYO. (refer to 6:30 in the video linked)
now this isn't because we lack a 's' in our language (my alias is literally a persian name meaning shadow aka ✦sayé✦), we've just transliterated it as shiyel, but SHEEL???
the other guy calls him fantomhayo too (8:25) and the fantomhayo condition strikes again with sebastian's va talking about the fantomhayo hospitality at 12:40 ish in the video.
this is particularly bizarre because we do have a V in persian, please guys, use it!
please note: i have nothing but good things to say about finny's va... the way the va says "sebaastiyaan!" (12:43) is so cute <3
at 13:00, we get this golden crumb "meyrin... oh meyrin" from this college aged dude doing sebastian (who is SO lost) then he proceeded to say in persian "i beg you, ON MY LIFE, just pour the fucking wine in the glass and walk away" save me from the bad dub, ono daisuke, save me...
the furnace scene is just gold (18:50 onward is comical, the scream at the end... priceless), these people deserve an award, im tempted to do subs on this whole video because the translation is so wrong yet absolutely too hilarious to leave untranslated. also, i like how you can hear other people talking in the background constantly, they didn't even bother finding a quiet room 😭😭
finally i translated some of the best comments under the vid (everyone fuckin hated it 😭)
..tldr: irani/persian speaking netizens are brutal. but also, it shows that persian speakers are used to quality dubbing, otherwise this wouldn't be so offensive. if we were used to badly done dubs, the comments wouldn't look like this. many famous kdramas and jdramas and indian/turkish films have been dubbed. animated movies e.g. disney films and most commonly 70-80s anime have huge followings in iran and were dubbed extraordinarily well. in fact, in iran, many of our own films are dubbed especially if the original footage did not capture the audio well enough/the director was unhappy with the actor's delivery and it's usually hard to tell if this has happened because it's done very well. shockingly, dub is more popular than sub. so why does kuro not have an official dub? why is the fandub so bad???
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING
*IMPORTANT: an anime like this is not allowed to be legally dubbed by studios in iran because iran is under an islamic theocracy (the islamic republic) and all media that promotes devil worshipping and blasphemy is banned, homosexuality is too (anyone can tell kuro has homoerotic undertones, the homophobic heads of media would never let this queer gothic romance through). oh and trans people are "allowed" on TV but only if they're not vulgar/explicit (not even then, half the time) & grelle would not make it into the anime AT ALL. even if we ignore all the devil worshipping and queerness, sex is banned too (as well as lewd appearances of women), so season 1/2 & boc would never make it. oh and alcohol, bom would never make it. oh and also, women's empowerment is banned too so boa would never make it. when will it end? will someday everything be banned? sure looks like it. but isn't this what anti shippers want? i mean kuro IS problematic media, it never condemns people for having sex or partaking in drinks, not even murder is condemned.
moving on, the subtitled version of the episodes are very well done for what they are but it's still not good, you won't understand what's going on properly. meanings are lost. a dub is much more accessible to those who can't read subs and generally a necessary option. people NEED dubs. don't get me wrong, the iranian fansub team are dedicated however subs are much easier for fans to do than dubbing. as you heard, kuro's persian fandub was frankly terrible. these kids didn't even know how to pronounce ciel's name and it's NOT because of the language barrier, my theory is that because the internet access is so limited, they had to figure out how to pronounce ciel's name purely from the japanese original or another lang dub and had no access to the eng dub. as you can see, they are not able to follow the mouth movements either (don't have editing software); i assume the internet restrictions targeted streaming platforms w the dub on it (because the government wants to CONTROL what media people consume) so they had to figure everything out from japanese or another language, (they probably used another fandub to translate since the ed seems to credit the eng vas while they can never be heard in the bg) which is not easy. unfortunately english is taught in schools around the world not japanese so the dubbers' translation was quite honestly terrible- after all, they had no official script to base their translation off. BUT if a professional dubbing studio (e.g. iran's glory entertainment) got their hands on kuro, it'd probably be dubbed very well. if mehrdad raissi, CEO of glory, was on for seb's role, it would be glorious (pun intended). if he did flynn rider well, he can do sebs well too. but that studio often has their shows played on state televisions and the last thing they want is to get blacklisted and arrested for dubbing the gay demon butler anime. please do not take this fandub as representing all persian-language dubs. and remember, kuro itself is banned for being problematic media in counties like iran... no sebaciel needed (although anyone can definitely see the gay undertones to the story from a cover alone).
if you want to ban people from shipping things or making fan works that are problematic... soon you'll have to get rid of problematic media in general. and already, antis sound like the media people in charge under a dictatorship. "violence is okay, murder is okay but s-sex?!? women in scandalous clothing!!! oh good heavens..!" this is the kind of mindset which leads people down the rabbit hole of "this is problematic!! let's ban it!!!" until there's nothing left, a slippery slope. imagine this was the english dub of kuro. imagine it was banned in western countries and a team of young'uns had to gang up and make their own dub using only the japanese raws. imagine problematic media like kuro wasn't picked up the west because it's "shota" and that's bad. we'd be stuck looking at the same sanitised stuff and if we wanted to watch kuro, our options would be trash dubs (no offense) like this one. pretty scary to think this could be the state of the english dub if puritanism was as bad here as it is in countries like iran. policing media and deciding what creators should or shouldn't create will take you to the side of theocratic dictatorships and you will fall into alt right puritan lunacy, fanpoll are about as woke as a dictatorship, remember that.
don't sound like this:
NEVER sound like this.
it is clear that conditional freedom is no freedom at all. there should be zero criteria to the media we want to create, no religion or purity culture to it. just be media literate. let nobody control what you want to create or consume! (or you'll end up in a world where the media that is deemed "problematic" is maintained but only through underground circles, losing quality and accessibility day by day, until these channels are shut down too and only a sanitised husk of options for media consumption remain)

Aaaand we're done! \o/
Well... "done" in one sense of the word since I just did a very quick search and apparently there's like another 140 chapters of side stories and counting. Possibly post-epilogue stuff??? Didn't look too closely since I don't want too many spoilers if I can avoid it. I already saw one vague spoiler relating to 49% Dokja's side story. 😢😢😢
Though at least now with the main novel+epilogues finished all of the mysteries have been wrapped up (as far as I can remember).
I guess I'm still curious about the Library, but even if that's never touched upon in any side story chapters, I think I kinda get it with my theories and how he broke up into many, many different Dokjas and/or was two different Oldest Dreams?
Oh, and the stuff with Dokja & 1863's Sooyoung's blurry faces, I would have liked to have seen that resolved. There were mentions of Dokja slowly getting less blurry that were kinda glossed over but nothing concrete ever popped up for why his face was blurry or if/when it fully stopped being blurry? Unless I just missed some subtle thing?? Like I guess the epilogue did mention that Sooyoung had fun writing in stuff about him being the Ugly King but I don't think she made him ugly, that was just her memories of him?? Either way, poor Dokja. 😭
idk maybe I'm the only one obsessed with things like that. (I literally eventually started a separate section in my ORV Scrivener notes just for all the times Dokja's looks are mentioned in any way.) So maybe it just wasn't deemed important to "resolve"? Or, again, it was but I totally missed it.
Or maybe there's still something about the Library and his looks (and other mysteries I may not be currently remembering) in the additional 140+ chapters out there?
Unfortunately, English translations of Chapters 552+ don't all seem to be in one place, or at least I wasn't able to quickly find them in my first search. I'll keep looking, though. Might just have to cobble together the chapters one by one from various sources. If anyone happens to know where I could possibly find them...
Though I'm honestly not certain if I want to immediately jump into them or if I want to give it a moment to breathe. I actually am a little bit disappointed that I jumped right into the 40+ chapter epilogues right after finishing the main story since I feel like it stole some of the impact from him finding his two separate ■■.
Even if I was really happy to see how they continued living on in the system-less world and how Dokja felt after losing all of his companions to be Oldest Dream. Seriously you never get to see those sort of things after the "happy" ending.
And I did love seeing how it all tied back together with Sooyoung being the author and ORV itself being Dokja's story (which Sooyoung also wrote!) which in turn is our story and getting to see Secretive Plotter and the 999ths again and poor Joonghyuk just not knowing what to do with himself after losing his purpose as a protagonist and him and Sooyoung wanting to save their precious Dokja more than anything and both of them coming to understand Dokja better and so on and so forth.
But if nothing else, I do really want to finally read some fanfiction and otherwise engage with fandom now that the big mysteries are solved. And if I can make one final prediction it's going to be that the top fanfic is some kind of modern, no powers gamer AU or something. Because that's just how these fandoms seem to go. 😂
Anyway, I think it should be obvious from my many, many ORV posts but I really enjoyed the novel! I am very happy that so many things were so well foreshadowed, so much was so carefully planned, so many loose ends were tied up in a very satisfying manner, etc. It's very impressive for such a long, looooong story. I mean, just the fact that you could get inklings that something was up with Secretive Plotter before we even hit Chapter 100 yet not have the reveal come until much later is impressive just on its own.
I guess if I had one complaint it'd be that I didn't quite vibe with the whole "multiple walls to open the Final Wall" thing. Like, I totally was into the idea of Dokja's Fourth Wall being the largest fragment, and I actually thought that Jang Hayoung's wall was pretty clever since it's all about commenting/texting others when Jan Hayoung was created due to Dokja's comments.
But I'm not quite so into the Wall of Samsara and Wall That Divides Good and Evil. Like, I do get how they relate to the story, what with Dokja literally reincarnating into multiple worlds himself and the fact that a lot of Dokja's main theme was that he didn't nicely fit into a box of good or evil. I mean, his literal Modifiers are Demon King of Salvation and Watcher of Light and Darkness. Not to mention, Dokja went through a ton of the novel saying that just because they were evil in one turn doesn't mean they're evil in the next and vice versa, as well as the fact that the had companions on both sides of the spectrum.
So I'm not saying that they just came out of nowhere, but personally I find something to be a little off with them when compared to the other two walls? idk these are just my initial thoughts and I might feel completely different once I re-read the novel and can better appreciate things.
Which, speaking of, I'm debating with myself if I want to do the truly ridiculous thing and start this entire novel over right from the beginning in true Dokja fashion or if I want to be good and maybe give some other universe some love. I was looking at The World After The Fall but...uh...
Not to say that things with tiny fandoms aren't also good!!!
But it does make me kinda side-eye it a little and wonder if I shouldn't just read Solo Leveling...
...or read whatever side stories I can find, aaaaaalllllll the fanfic, and then read ORV all over again. 😂
We'll see.
FYI when I do start reacting to the side stories I think I'll use the tag "orv side story" if anyone wants to block it preemptively to avoid spoilers.
#thanks for everyone that came along with me on my journey!#I'll have to find my own ORV liveblogger to follow now 😊#orv#orv spoilers#orv novel chapter 551#orv epilogue spoilers#omniscient reader's viewpoint#orv liveblog

love me some christian!hvitserk i guess🧍🏼(also this is probably my outing as a christian lol?)
this is heavily influenced by ‘modern christianity’ since i myself am a mennonite and know almost nothing about catholicism🧍🏼so, this is no accurate representation of christianity during the 9th/10th century (also, i wrestled with the king james bible for this😭)
(masterlist overview | vikings masterlist | join my tag list!)
REQUESTS/ASKS OPEN!!!
hvitserk stares at the little piece of paper in his hand. alfred gave it to him. a bible verse translated into english. hvitserk’s reading wasn’t the best but he could understand the verse. alfred said it was from psalms 121.
I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help?
My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.
he toys with the paper, the thin material already ripping from his fumbling. the christian god was so…weird. why would someone worship a weak god? a god that died, nailed to a cross? hvitserk didn’t understand.
ivar always called him ‘the bread god’ because christians ate their god after each mass. again, it didn’t make sense. not in the slightest. which god would allow his people to eat him? that was a sign of weakness!
but while hvitserk couldn’t quite wrap his mind around the christian god and who he was, he found that he found a certain comfort in the bible verse alfred gave him. he couldn’t explain it. but the thought that there was someone watching over him, thinking of him and keeping him safe, without him having to sacrifice an animal stirred something deep within him.
lately hvitserk found himself thinking about the christian god more often than he might like. he attended his lessons—like alfred had instructed—and most of the time he didn’t pay attention. why should he? officially he might be a christian but deep down he hadn’t accepted their god. but one thing the priest said was stuck in his head:
“god does not want anything from you but your heart.”
at first hvitserk thought he was supposed to literally give his heart but the priest soon told hvitserk what it really meant:
“giving god your heart means that you accept the beautiful gift he gave us. his son. that’s all you need to do. everything else will follow.”
that left hvitserk thinking. with his gods there were no do’s and don’t’s. he could do anything he wanted. with christianity it was different. there were so many rules and so many things you needed to keep in mind. it was exhausting…
give god his heart. it sounded so easy yet so hard. and the fact that he couldn't read their sacred text made it even harder. all hvitserk had were the things the priest told him and the bible verse alfred gave him. maybe he should ask the young king for more verses?
and as if you speak of the devil the heavy door to hvitserk's room opens. he turns around and sees alfred looking at him. "hello hvitserk," he smiles, walking further into the room and closing the door. "how are you?"
hvitserk starts to move to properly greet alfred but the saxon waves him off. so, hvitserk falls back into the chair. "i'm okay," he says. "thinking."
alfred nods. "ah. might i ask about what?"
"your god."
alfred chuckles. "do you want to share those thoughts with me? or shall i call for a priest?" the look in his eyes is genuine; like everything he's done for hvitserk so far.
the man in question shakes his head. "no need to call the priest. i want to talk to you." he looks at alfred, a tiny voice in the back of his head telling him that it was a terrible idea. but the request already rolled past his lips.
alfred's eyes light up and he sits down on hvitserk's bed. "of course. what is it you want to talk about?"
hvitserk takes a deep breath and adjusts on the chair. "your god, the priest said i just need to give him my heart," he starts. "what does that mean? he told me something but i don't quite understand it." confusion is evident in hvitserk eyes and alfred nods in a understanding manner.
"well, from the very beginning god wanted to have a relationship with us. he made us, he is our father, but when adam and eve ate the fruit that got destroyed–"
"but why?" hvitserk sounds frustrated.
alfred nods again, a faint smile on his lips. "because he is perfect, holy, clean. and we are not. my eating the fruit adam and eve disobeyed god." his voice was calm and soft as he tried to explain the fall from grace. "someone had to pay for adam's and eve's sin. that's why for thousands of years the israelites sacrificed animals. but from the very beginning god told adam and eve that he will send someone to pay the price for their sin."
a deep frown was visible on hvitserk's face. dept? death? what? maybe he should've listened during his lessons with the priest...
"in genesis two, verse 14 and 15 it says:
"And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel."
that was the first time jesus christ was promised to us. now, when god send jesus thousands of years later, he died on the cross for our sins. hence the cross in our churches." alfred takes a deep breath and studies hvitserk's face. the northman still looked so confused.
hvitserk opens his mouth and closes it again. he thinks for another second before he finally talks. "but why do i have to give my heart to him?"
alfred hums, "well, the price for our sin is paid. all you need to do now is accept it. i trust the priest told you that already?"
"he did," hvitserk nods. "he did tell me that."
there's silence for a few moments before alfred talks again. "but there is something bothering you, is it not?"
again hvitserk nods. "there is." he thinks what to say for a seconds. "there are all those rules and...and i don't understand them. why do you need to follow them?" a defeated sigh leaves his lips and he starts fiddling with the piece of paper again.
"they're not rules, i would say," alfred says, a certain determination in his voice. "when god created the world he established a certain standard. and we're supposed to live by this standard." he folds his hands in his lap. "but we can't."
the frown on hvitserk's face deepens. what does that mean?
"the human itself is not able to keep god's standards. they are holy and we–by birth–are not. that is why god offers us his help. he wants to shape us into a human after his image, because that is how we were made. we were made in his image."
when hvitserk doesn't say anything alfred faintly chuckles. "this is messing with your head, is it not?" hvitserk nods and bites the inside of his cheek. "well, i think this is enough for today. we can continue our talk on another day if you would like. but right now i believe it is time for supper." alfred stands up, looking at hvitserk. "would you like to join me?"
"of course," hvitserk mumbles as he stands up. this was all so confusing and overwhelming. he would need to think about this further the next days. maybe then he could continue his conversation with alfred...

Just for curiosity, do you have the same problem with other dubs (such as the Italian, LATAM, French, Portuguese, etc...) that you have for the English one or is it just for that one?
Hope you have a nice day!
Heyy, thanks for the ask!
To answer your question, yes, I do! I am a dub hater in general, haha. I think watching the dub, no matter which one, is okay if you're like a casual fan who for example watch Dragon Ball when it happens to be on tv, but I really don't get big fans who still watch the dub (and they annoy me a lot to be honest 😭).
I criticize the funimation dub more because first of all, it's an english centered website, everyone on here speak english, and most users have english as their first language. So it's this dub that most Dragon Ball fans on here watch, it makes more sense to talk about this one. And if I tried to criticize other dubs I know like the french one (I am french), nobody would know what I am talking about or get the refs haha. Rare are the people who know Patrick Borg on tumblr.
But also, even though I have the same problem with all dubs in general, criticize all of them and think you should watch the original version no matter where you're from, the funimation dub especially annoys me because 1) there are way more english speaking fans who only watch the dub than people from other countries who watch the dub of their language instead of the og version. Like, in France for example, most real and big fans watch the japanese version. Almost nobody decides to watch db/dbz or the new Daima episode of the week in french. The only people who do that are casual fans who watch DB/DBZ/DB Daima when it's on tv and don't especially watch it on their own, or some idiots (often racists) who can't handle hearing japanese. It's weird for a fan in France to still watch the french version in 2024, and I know it's the same thing in many other countries. It's mostly americans who still only watch their dub (and sometimes have the nerves to criticize the japanese version...). 2) Most american fans don't know this but the english dub is imposed on fans all over the world. Many video games for example try to please the American audience by using the terms of the funimation dub, and we end up having to play with "Mystic Gohan" or "Kid Buu", many translations (like in subtitles, or books, magazines) are based on the funimation dub (which is very, very different from the original version, and doesn't translate the japanese lines well at all, so you can guess how terrible the final translations are)...it's annoying. When I buy a video game or a book about Dragon Ball, I want to play with the characters' real bames, read the most accurate translation possible, hear or read the official terms and not the american ones. As a result we all end up hating the english dub.
Anyway, I think the funimation dub is very, very bad for several reasons but I am a dub hater in general lol.
In short, yes, I have the same problem with all other dubs even though I talk about the funimation one more !
Hope you have a very nice day too!!!

hi! i study scandinavian languages in university, but we haven't started icelandic yet.. i just wanted to ask you if it makes sense to tattoo "dansið eða deyið" on myself, because when i search "dance or die" in icelandic it always comes up as "dansa eða deyja" and i don't know what's the difference 😭😭
Good question! English is a language that relies on context and helper words more than different forms of words, and this can often mean other languages such as Icelandic have many different word forms used differently that all appear to translate to the same thing in English.
"Dansa eða deyja" is the infinitive form: to dance or die, but without the to. It's the neutral dictionary form of a verb. It doesn't make much sense on its own; you probably wouldn't tattoo "to dance" on yourself unless perhaps it was some sort of reference to a longer quote. It's a perfectly correct translation of "dance or die" with zero context, but it's not what the song is called or what the lyric is.
"Dansið eða deyið" is the plural imperative: Matthías is commanding the masses (multiple people) to dance or die. The plural imperative ending -ið is effectively short for "þið", or plural you. Imperatives can function perfectly well on their own as a statement. So that's what the song is called and how the lyrics go. It's probably what you want as the tattoo, if you want to reference the song.
Other possible forms of this phrase that also make sense on their own but with different nuances:
"Dansaðu eða deyðu" is the singular imperative: commanding one person to dance or die. The -ðu (sometimes -du or -tu) ending is derived from "þú", singular you.
"Dönsum eða deyjum" is the first person plural, which when stated on its own without a subject implies Let's dance or die: effectively it's like the imperative, except that if that was the line, Matthías would be saying we should all do this, him included.

IWTV S2E01 First Watch Note
The notes I took while watching in case anyone is interested. Under the cut.
Anyway, I'm grateful they have improved the Episode Insider and now it's really something worth watching
• It's still a recap but the score slays already. Omg Daniel Hart you deserve all the awards
• I love how it says episode 8 and the silhouette of war torn Europe.
• On Claudia dreaming: Present Louis holding onto Claudia's diaries to provide a fact in the past
• Delainey is insane. Just from being silent, we could feel how torn Claudia is
• Interesting they gave ep 1 to a new director to set the tone
• So before this interview happened, when Louis still believed he killed Lestat in NOLA, he got to read this edited diaries and didn't understand what Claudia wrote? I mean, imagine reading the bitterness in her words yet you didn't know where they came from. The break down in Ep 7 triggers more memories for him to remember
• I think Daniel is similar to Lestat in a way. The more he's afraid of Armand the more crass he is. That Shah Rukh Khan comment, boy stfu
• It's insane how Louis posed dead Lestat like Jesus.
• Okay, I'm gonna "translating" DreamStat lines like I did with dead Abigail Hobbs
• The way Dreamstat shows Louis still misses Lestat and starts to ponder if Claudia worth it. The resentment building.
• OH THE LOUSTAT LEITMOTIF AFTER LOUIS SAID SORRY TO DREAMSTAT. slower version of In Throes in Increasing Wonder
• The lines Dreamstat did are so loaded with meanings. Louis' guilt for killing Lestat; his fear that he will come for revenge; his fear that once he's finally in better place, everything will crumble again; and his longing for him just from how intimately they're talking
• Oh, Louis is obsessed to get everything right. That will gradually eat his mental stability
• Photo of Grace as his wife. Louis you're so funny
• Real Rashid deserves a hell of bonus and a promotion istg
• I don't understand Russian etc, but the use of foreign language and accented English has been smooth so far. A world better than whatever the fuck Mayfair Witches did. And they only had to cover one language.
• "In a landfill and five years of garbage on top." Louis, garbage wouldn't stop him 😭. I wonder where Lestat has been for 5 years tho. Recovering with that many rats are easy. Okay, let's say 3/6 months on rats. Once he gets up, he could kill the first person coming to a landfill. Then it will be smooth sailing. One year tops to recover. Two years, if you'd think he's depressed over Louis killing him idk.
• The emotion in Claudia's eyes 😭
• "Change the subject when the truth blinds you" Oh, she got him.
• That insane monologue Jacob does. Louis starting to remember which is true which is not (he re-remembers the fall, mind you).
• So because the blood is bad, vampires there can't get warmer and feel their sadness and sickness as well. And when they want to turn someone, it's either fail or they turn into a revenant. At least according to Louis.
• Oh, Daciana can taste how strong their blood is. How long they can live.
• I wonder what went through Claudia's head, seeing Daciana emulated herself. She (deservedly, after all his lies) didn't believe Lestat when he said his maker burnt himself. Ofc it didn't make any sense to her ears at that time, burning yourself after you turned someone. But now she witnessed it herself. Someone who could have told her everything, killing themselves after feeling lost and untethered (Daciana lost all of her fledlings)
• "My name is in some of those pages" Louis isn't even listening to his fear. He's deadset on this. And Armand is anxious.
• The face Armand made. Does Louis know he has men around his pinky just for a drop of his affection?
• Louis agreed with Armand to basically shut Daniel up and turn him into a fumble journalist again when he still wants the truth is interesting
• Is that the groan? It's louder now.
• Daniel's reaction when seeing Loumand walking in together is so funny 🤣
• Wait, Session 7 is Ep 7. There are two sessions in this episode and it's Season 10 now. so, what happened in Season 8?
• The way Lestat is there during the You and Me lines, but it's not really Lestat. It's the embodiment of Louis' doubt on this new life he chose together. The way Claudia sitting there so small; Lestat lovingly softly gazing at her. Oh, Louis so wants to believe his words himself.
• Louis arrives in Paris with desperation to prove that this life is worth it; that killing Lestat was worth it; that he'll get that happiness. Even though he's afraid Lestat will come or it will crumble the moment he reaches it. Oh, Louis.

[ENG Translation] Wisdom Thinks District Story #1: The Excitable Youngest¹
i care them 🥺
(translations under cut)
Soun: Tomorrow's appointments… are fully booked, hm? There's quite a bit of overlap in assignments, so I'll adjust the schedule --
Hayate: Soun~! I'm all done cleaning the floor~!
Soun: Very good, thank you.
Hayate: What'cha doing? Oh, checking tomorrow's appointments? So tomorrow~ Those three regulars are gonna be here~!
Soun: Is that so?
Hayate: They contacted me earlier. They said something good happened at work, so they'd be happy to celebrate with us~
Hayate: We were talking 'bout having a nice bottle of wine. Tomorrow's gonna be lots of fun~!
Soun: …
Soun: …It looks like you've had one too many drinks tonight.
Hayate: Heehee, you think so?
Soun: Yes. You're more troublesome when you've drunk too much.
Hayate: Aw, isn't "troublesome" mean?!
Soun: The undeniable truth is what it is.
Hayate: Okay, but like, I can't refuse if they're all like "Hayate-kun, let's make a toast!", now can I?
Soun: Indeed not, but… You tend to misjudge your limits from time to time.
Soun: You wouldn't conduct yourself in this manner in front of our clientele, would you?
Hayate: Don't worry 'bout a thing! I'm a total professional through and through.
Soun: So you say, though… You'll be drinking more wine tomorrow with your customers, no?
Hayate: Ahahaha! Soun, you gotta stop worrying so much, it'll be A-OK!
Hayate: I barely get hangovers, y'know?
Soun: …It's not the hangovers I'm worried about. All I'm saying is don't overdo it.
Soun: Let's think back on tonight. Were these customers likely to drink in excess? If I remember correctly, I believe they were not.
Hayate: It's just that as the talking goes on, so does the drinking. For sure, that might've been why I ended up drinking too much…
Soun: …I see. I suppose that goes to show how much our customers enjoy talking to you.
Hayate: Talking with them's a lot of fun, and them having fun makes me happy~
Hayate: If it means helping out Wisdom, then I'm even happier -- and you are too! Everyone wins!²
Soun: …You really are drunk, after all. You're running your mouth more than usual.
Soun: However, it's good to know that you care enough to keep the lounge in mind.³
Hayate: I'm care-care-caring~!
Soun: Yes, yes… Moreover, Hayate.
Hayate: Yeah?
Soun: I'm sure you'll be fine, but if you find yourself feeling unwell tomorrow, go get one of those lattes you enjoy before coming to work.
Soun: Caffeine is effective against hangovers.
Hayate: Ahaha, aren't you sweet! Well, I'll see you tomorrow, Soun!
Soun: Mhm.
¹ the original title is お調子者の最年少, with お調子者 meaning "person who gets carried away easily." i won't lie, the title was the hardest thing for me to translate here and i'm still a little iffy on it wgKJKJGH 😭 but i did my best to make it work
² the original line is [...] つまり最高ってことだね, which is literally like "that's why it's the best" but i feel like that sounds awkward in english, so i tried to phrase it in a way that conveys a similar meaning
³ the particular word used here is 想ってる (想う) which can mean "to think," though it has a more heartfelt connotation, so i tried to corporate that nuance as best as i could
