The unnerving side of this was the equal amount of applications I received asking to join (Really? Join a group of underground serial killers? Really?) or outright death threats by people who really believe in such things. (Someone summed it up pretty well in this article from The Fenris Wolf)

The Incunabula: Ong’s Hat Project [ Reviews | Interviews, etc. | Wikipedia | History] This was a ARG/Transmedia style story started in 1988 and ended in 2001. It utilized zines, BBS, early Internet, Web, CD ROM, CD Audio, DVD, print (book, graphic novel and magazine), radio, phone trees, fax, and news wire services. I gained and leveraged exposure in both the mainstream and alternative media to distribute over 2 million copies of CD ROM, ebook and print versions of the story combined. Story elements from Ong’s Hat were also included in the EA Game, Majestic which unfortunately ended prematurely due to 9/11. It was the subject of a full 4 hour show on Coast to Coast AM, been the subject of an article on the Weekly World News and been covered on many radio shows world wide, books, newspapers, magazines, etc. Links to media here.

Description: “…a bizarre Internet phenomenon: an “immersive” online experience—part mystery, part game, part who knows what—known as both the Incunabula Papers and Ong’s Hat. The Incunabula Papers/Ong’s Hat was, or is, a “many-threaded, open-ended interactive narrative” that ”weds an alternate history of chaos science and consciousness studies to conspiracy theories, parallel dimensions, and claims that computer-mediated environments can serve as magical tools…. the documents provoked a widespread “immersive legend-trip” in the late 1990s. Via Web forums, participants investigated the documents—manifestos—which spun up descriptions of brilliant but suppressed discoveries relating to paths that certain scientists had forged into alternate realities. Soon, those haunted dimensions existed in the minds and fantasies of Ong’s Hat’s many participants. 7 From The Women: Leanna Primiani AKA ANASIA

7 From The Women is a segment here on Independent Artist Buzz where we ask some of the industries finest seven questions. During this time of accusations and the lack thereof, we think it’s important to give women a voice. We chose to ask seven questions to honor the seven Wiccan clans.

ANASIA AKA Leanna Primiani, a classically trained composer and conductor best known for her innovative orchestral and chamber works for the concert stage. Composing under the moniker, ANASIA, she expands her range even further by fusing orchestral, dark ambient, post-minimal and experimental electronic elements. She just released a new single, “Sounds like FEAR” from her upcoming EP “Blurred.”

What have you been working to promote lately?

Today I released a single, Sounds Like FEAR, just in time for Halloween! The music is a reimagining of the score for the highly-controversial arthouse horror short, Sulphur for Leviathan, by director James Quinn (Flesh of the Void). The film documents a nun’s descent from devotional to demonic, with a visual quality is both sinister and surreal. This track takes a “variations on a theme” approach to the music by using the movie’s musical motifs as creative fodder. The film has been visually sculpted to achieve a sensory disorienting experience to heighten the film’s deliciously depraved narrative arc. I attempted to mirror this effect through my treatment of sound.

In keeping with the film’s compositional techniques, I juxtapose organic and synthetic sounds into a dense and disorienting aural patchwork, consisting of bite-sized chunks of recorded organic instrumentation; found sound from the natural environment a la “Musique Concr��te”; synthesizer-based musical passages; and swatches of music heavily treated by digital-signal processing.

Within this detailed sonic thicket, select sounds for the building blocks of her interpretive work were modified in a variety of ways. Passages are played backward; jarringly cut short or dramatically elongated; subjected to echo-chamber effects; and varied in pitch and intensity. This coming together of varied auditory experiences cohesively gels into an invigorating and disquieting auditory experience.

Please tell us about your favorite song written, recorded or produced by another woman and why it’s meaningful to you.

As for living composers, my admiration runs deep for film composers Pinar Toprak and Hildur Gudnadottirr and their ability to break the glass ceiling in Hollywood. In addition, Pulitzer Prize winning composers Ellen Taaffe Zwilich (1983), Shulamit Ran (1991); Melinda Wagner (1999), Jennifer Higdon (2010), Caroline Shaw (2013), Julia Wolfe (2015), Du Yun (2017) and Ellen Reid (2019). These composers all have their own unique voice. Their music is remarkable, and they give me inspiration every day. I aspire to their success!

I have so much music and so many women composers I admire that it’s hard to choose. Ruth Crawford Seiger’s string quartet is one of my favorite works. Ruth is a giant among female classical composers. She developed her composition genius in the shadow of her composer husband. She created an impressive body of work, but never saw much success in her lifetime. Her music is having it’s renaissance now and I am thankful for it!

What does it mean to you to be a woman making music / in the music business today and do you feel a responsibility to other women to create messages and themes in your music?

I have written music with a message in many of my concert works, (Glass Ceiling for example), but I feel that #metoo has given permission to really explore the female experience. My latest work for orchestra, 1001, tells the story of Scheherazade, but through her eyes. With references to Rimsky-Korsakov original, I try to musically imagine what Scheherazade’s life was like—her existence dependent on the quality of her narratives. Finishing one story only to start the next in a seamless flow to prolong her life. Scheherazade lived in fear of the man she shares a bed with. It’s a story especially resonant in today’s climate, and one of the reasons I felt compelled to write it.

What is the most personal thing you have shared in your music or in your artist brand as it relates to being female?

For me, the most difficult thing to share about myself in the music is the idea of being an artist and being a wife and mother. I feel on a subconscious level this duality comes through in my music, both the joy and the struggle. It’s a difficult balance, and I know I’m not the only women out there who experiences it.

What female artists have inspired you and influenced you?

There are so many! Annie Lennox and Lizzo for starters. They both are conservatory trained, like me… and they both play the flute, also like me!

Do you consider yourself a feminist? If so why and if not why?

Yes I do! But why is it a dirty word? To want equal pay for equal work, to be recognized for one’s accomplishments, to not be held to a higher standard than men, to get a seat at the table, to not have to ‘lean in’… why is this bad? I will never understand why people, both men and women, are so threatened by the idea of ‘feminism’? It’s beyond me.

What was the most challenging thing you have had to face as a female artist?

I can think of many challenging situations I’ve had that I’m uncomfortable talking about here, but probably the most frustrating of all is the day-to-day sexism that is still prevalent in the music industry. The journey seems to be similar for most women: the judgement, being passed over, being ignored… it’s really ‘variations on a theme’ for all women, musicians and nonmusicians alike.

I recently read that if a man has a picture of his family in his office he is viewed as a family man, trustworthy and reliable. If a woman has a picture of her family in her office, she is regarded as not serious about her job, not devoted to the company and untrustworthy. WTF?! We have to put up with that AND make 82¢ on the dollar? It’s frustrating.

I have been told throughout my career, both as a film composer and a concert composer, to ‘downplay my femininity’, to change my name to make it sound ‘less female’, to not talk about my kids, etc. It can be debilitating. I think #metoo has helped with that pressure a bit, as people seem to be more accepting of the multiple roles women play.

A Look at What’s New in Chrome DevTools in 2020

I’m excited to share some of the newer features in Chrome DevTools with you. There’s a brief introduction below, and then we’ll cover many of the new DevTools features. We’ll also look at what’s happening in some other browsers. I keep up with this stuff, as I create Dev Tips, the largest collection of DevTools tips you’ll find online!

It’s a good idea to find out what’s changed in DevTools because it’s constantly evolving and new features are specifically designed to help and improve our development and debugging experience.

Let’s jump into the latest and greatest. While the public stable version of Chrome does have most of these features, I’m using Chrome Canary as I like to stay on the bleeding edge.

Lighthouse

Lighthouse is an open source tool for auditing web pages, typically around performance, SEO, accessibility and such. For a while now, Lighthouse has been bundled as part of DevTools meaning you can find it in a panel named… Lighthouse!

Well done, Mr. Coyier. 🏆

I really like Lighthouse because it’s one of easiest parts of DevTools to use. Click “Generate report” and you immediately get human-readable notes for your webpage, such as:

Document uses legible font sizes 100% legible text

Or:

Avoid an excessive DOM size (1,189 elements)

Almost every single audit links to developer documentation that explains how the audit may fail, and what you can do to improve it.

The best way to get started with Lighthouse is to run audits on your own websites:

Open up DevTools and navigate to the Lighthouse panel when you are on one of your sites

Select the items you want to audit (Best practices is a good starting point)

Click Generate report

Click on any passed/failed audits to investigate the findings

Even though Lighthouse has been part of DevTools for a while now (since 2017!), it still deserves a significant mention because of the user-facing features it continues to ship, such as:

An audit that checks that anchor elements resolve to their URLs (Fun fact: I worked on this!)

An audit that checks whether the Largest Contentful Paint metic is fast enough

An audit to warn you of unused JavaScript

A better “Inspect Element”

This is a subtle and, in some ways, very small feature, but it can have profound effects on how we treat web accessibility.

Here’s how it works. When you use Inspect Element — what is arguably the most common use of DevTools — you now get a tooltip with additional information on accessibility.

Accessibility is baked right in!

The reason I say this can have a profound impact is because DevTools has had accessibility features for quite some time now, but how many of us actually use them? Including this information on a commonly used feature like Inspect Element will gives it a lot more visibility and makes it a lot more accessible.

The tooltip includes:

the contrast ratio of the text (how well, or how poorly, does the foreground text contrast with the background color)

the text representation

the ARIA role

whether or not the inspected element is keyboard-focusable

To try this out, right-click (or Cmd + Shift + C) on an element and select Inspect to view it in DevTools.

Exactly as it says on the tin, you can use Chrome DevTools to emulate vision impairments. For example, we can view a site through the lens of blurred vision.

That’s a challenge to read!

How can you do this in DevTools? Like this:

Open DevTools (right click and “Inspect” or Cmd + Shift + C).

Open the DevTools Command menu (Cmd + Shift + P on Mac, Ctrl + Shift + P on Windows).

Select Show Rendering in the Command menu.

Select a deficiency in the Rendering pane.

We used blurred vision as an example, but DevTools has other options, including: protanopia, deuteranopia, tritanopia, and achromatopsia.

Like with any tool of this nature, it’s designed to be a complement to our (hopefully) existing accessibility skills. In other words, it’s not instructional, but rather, influential on the designs and user experiences we create.

Get timing on performance

The Performance Panel in DevTools can sometimes look like a confusing mish-mash of shapes and colors.

This update to it is great because it does a better job surfacing meaningful performance metrics.

What we want to look at are those extra timing rectangles shown in the “Timings” in the Performance Panel recording. This highlights:

DOMContentLoaded: The event which triggers when the initial HTML loads

First Paint: When the browser first paints pixels to the screen

First Contentful Paint: The point at which the browser draws content from the DOM which indicates to the user that content is loading

Onload: When the page and all of its resources have finished loading

Largest Contentful Paint: The largest image or text element, which is rendered in the viewport

As a bonus, if you find the Largest Contentful Paint event in a Performance Panel recording, you can click on it to get additional information.

Nice work, CSS-Tricks! The Largest Contentful Paint happens early on in the page load.

While there is a lot of golden information here, the “Related Node” is potentially the most useful item because it specifies exactly which element contributed to the LCP event.

To try this feature out:

Open up DevTools and navigate to the Performance panel

Click “Start profiling and reload page”

Observe the timing metrics in the Timings section of a recording

Click the individual metrics to see what additional information you get

Monitor performance

If you want to quickly get started using DevTools to analyze performance and you’ve already tried Lighthouse, then I recommend the Performance Monitor feature. This is sort of like having WebPageTest.org right at your fingertips with things like CPU usage.

Here’s how to access it:

Open DevTools

Open up the Command menu (Cmd + Shift + P on Mac, Ctrl + Shift + P on Windows)

Select “Show performance monitor” from the Command menu

Interact and navigate around the website

Observe the results

The Performance Monitor can give you interesting metrics, however, unlike Lighthouse, it’s for you to figure out how to interpret them and take action. No suggestions are provided. It’s up to you to study that CPU usage chart and ask whether something like 90% is an acceptable level for your site (it probably isn’t).

The Performance Monitor has an interactive legend, where you can toggle metrics on and off, such as:

CPU usage

JS heap size

DOM Nodes

JS event listeners

Documents

Document Frames

Layouts / sec

Style recalcs / sec

CSS overview and local overrides

So, what about DevTool in other browsers?

I’m sure you noticed that I’ve been using Chrome throughout this article. It’s the browser I use personally. That said, it’s worth considering that:

Firefox DevTools is looking pretty great right now

With Microsoft Edge extending from Chromium, it too will benefit from these DevTools features

As evident on the Safari Technology Preview Release Notes (search for Web Inspector on that page), Safari DevTools has come a long way

In other words, keep an eye out because this is a quickly evolving space!

There is such an amazing variety of things to do in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Being located between 2 large cities – Milwaukee and Chicago – you get a small town feel with lots of great activities to do.

Here are our recommendations on things to do when you visit Kenosha either for a day trip, the weekend or longer!

Museums

There are 5, yes you read that right, 5 museums in the Kenosha area and some of them are even listed as part of the Smithsonian Institution. These museums are no joke and well worth a visit! And the best part is you get an amazing museum without all the people that are drawn to the larger museums in Milwaukee and Chicago.

Civil War Museum

A top of the line museum where you can learn all about the Civil War and how it impacted the Midwest. It is the only Civil War museum in the country that focuses specifically on the Midwest during the Civil War.

Part of the museum is free where you can walk around and then go into the activity center for hands on Civil War activities including costumes you can try on and different activities you can do. All for free.

The Fiery Trail and Seeing The Elephants film are the sections you have to pay for. $9 per adult and kids 15 and under are free with a paying adult. It is definitely worth it to pay for this.

The Fiery Trail takes you on a journey through the personal stories of Midwesterners before, during and after the Civil War. The stories range from nurses to soldiers to slaves and children. You can even sit next to them on the “train” and here their story first hand! No they aren’t real people but figurines dressed up in period clothes with voice recording. Still a pretty cool experience!

Seeing The Elephants is a 360 degree movie that shares the story of first combat for a group of soldiers. The 360 degree screen it is shown on is a whole experience in itself.

They also have a variety of workshops and classes throughout the year – so be sure to look into that as well. And once you are done with the museum head over to the gift shop for a look around.

Dinosaur Discovery Museum

The Dinosaur Museum is the only museum to focus on the link between meat-eating dinosaurs and birds with the largest collection of meat-eating theropods on display. They are also recognized by the Smithsonian Institute. And it is all FREE!

When first entering they have a great hands on area that has a large digging station, puzzles and a variety of other dinosaur related activities. It will be hard to get your kids to leave this area.

Next you head into the main Dinosaur room where they have more than 20 dinosaurs displayed. This would be a great time to ask if Nick is in and available to do a tour. Yes FREE tours by someone that knows everything there is to know about the museum and dinosaurs! Hopefully you are there on a day he is available – just ask at the front to see and tell him Crazy Family Adventure sent you.

If he isn’t available never fear there are signs sharing the names of the dinosaurs along with facts on them.

Once done here (could take 5 minutes to quickly walk through or over an hour if Nick comes up to take you on a tour or if you take your time reading all of the signs). Head down to the basement. This is where a working lab exists that the local Carthage Institute of Paleontology group uses to work on bones they have found on their expeditions. You can look in on what they have been working on from glass windows.

This area is also filled with more hands on activities that you can do with the kids. Nick had mentioned there was going to be even more added to this area soon so it is definitely worth coming down to see what they have setup.

They also offer a variety of classes so be sure to look into that.

Kenosha Public Museum

The Kenosha Public Museum is a natural sciences and fine and decorative arts museum located down by the lakefront in Kenosha – right next to the Civil War Museum and overlooking Lake Michigan. One of the main attraction is the Mammoth that was excavated right in Kenosha. You can also walk through the four season Native American display. And on some dates they will have a worker at the end of the display dressed in costume and available to show you artifacts and to talk about the history of the area.

Upstairs they have evolving exhibits – usually fine arts inspired. Plus an amazing place you can sit out to look out over the beautiful lakefront and Lake Michigan.

One of the things our kids like to do best is head to the hands on area that is filled with different activities for the kids to do. From light tables to building blocks to books and stuffed animals. There are lots of things to touch, feel and play with here!

They also offer a variety of classes so be sure to look into that.

Southport Light Station and Museum

Come learn all about the Lighthouse and the history and growth of Kenosha. Plus if it is open you can go up in the Lighthouse for an amazing view of the lakefront and Kenosha.

The museum is located in the Lighthouse keepers house. A few of the rooms show what it would have looked like back with the Lighthouse keeper lived here. The other rooms have displays and images explaining the history of the Lighthouse.

Ron is usually there when the museum is open and he is loaded with amazing information on Kenosha, the Kenosha Lighthouse and just lighthouses in general! If he is available ask for a tour and you will learn everything you want to know.

Kenosha History Center

The Kenosha History Museum is split up in different timeframes. Starting from when Kenosha was first settled into the automobile era. With a variety of other displays throughout. Plus the gift shop is the perfect place to get books and documents on more Kenosha history! If you are interested in learning more about the city this is where you should go!

Activities

Kenosha is filled with all different kind of activities from things you pay for to things that are free. Visit the Renaissance, go skiing, watch a play, take in a sporting event, the list goes on and on!

Bristol Renaissance Faire

If you are coming to the area in the summer you won’t want to miss the Renaissance Faire. It is such a unique and fun experience for the whole family! It is a whole village that is built to represent Renaissance times when Queen Elizabeth the first ruled. And yes Queen Elizabeth will make an appearance.

You can walk around and check out all of the shops – that are only allowed to have products similar to what would have been sold during the renaissance timeframe. Things like hand made candles, swords (REAL swords), jewelry, wood cups, chain mail (for real!), and so much more.

Then spend the rest of your time watching the fun shows! They have a mud wrestling show, Adult only Pub Crawls, Comedians, Acrobats, hawks and more! They even have a joust! These are really shows that you won’t find anywhere else – well unless you go to another Renn Faire somewhere else in the country. A lot of the shop owners and performers do this full time and travel around the country attending Renn Faires all year.

It has been a tradition for us to go to the Renn Faire (and dress up in costume – people do that!) since I was 8 years old!

Wilmot Mountain

If you are looking to spend an amazing day skiing, snow boarding or tubing this is the place for you. Wilmot Mountain has a variety of different levels of ski hills. And if you don’t have equipment – never fear! They have a huge collection of everything to rent.

If you are new to skiing or snowboarding they have an awesome group of instructors to show you the ropes.

You can easily make a day out of it by starting the day with lessons then spending the rest of the time on the hills. They also have a cafeteria and a restaurant. Along with a fire-pit you can sit around and watch the skiers come down.

Rhode Center For The Arts

If you are in to theatre, then be sure to check out what is playing at the Rhode Center For The Arts. It is small town theatre but they still do a great job. Plus it means it is a smaller theatre so every seat is good! They have different plays throughout the year so check out their site for the most recent info.

Kingfish game

If you are there during the season don’t miss Kenosha’s collegiate league baseball team. They do a really great job of having activities for the kids throughout the game. Plus the stadium is nice and compact so there isn’t a bad seat in the place!

College Athletics

What sport do you want to go and see? Between Division 2 UW-Parkside and Division 3 Carthage College there is a huge list! Football, Soccer, Basketball, Baseball, Wrestling the list goes on and on. Check out the college website for details.

Kenosha Comedy Club

Kenosha has its own Comedy Club where you will see two opening comedians plus a national touring headliner for 90 minutes on Friday and Saturday nights. No need to deal with traffic and big cities to see a comedian. Make a night out of it in downtown Kenosha with dinner at one of the many downtown restaurants and then walk over to the Comedy Show.

Glass Blowing at Flamed Beginnings

Want a fun and unique activity to do as a family? Checkout Flamed Beginnings. Mike the owner is awesome at what he does and he is a great teacher. You can contact him to setup your own private lesson and learn how to blow glass! We did 4 classes with our kids and it was such a cool experience and one of the kids favorite activities that we did when we were back in Kenosha this winter.

Kenosha Harbormarket

During the warmer months (May – October) you can visit the outside Farmers Market. Every year it gets bigger and bigger and they bring in more vendors. The have local honey and meat, handmade baskets, popcorn, all sorts of food and more! It is a fun way to spend a Saturday morning. During the winter months they bring the market indoor – it is a smaller market but still has a lot of good items.

A perfect winter activity. The city sets up a small ice rink – it is small, but that works out well for beginner skaters. Don’t have skates? Don’t worry you can rent them for FREE – yes Free! Here is a great activity to do and if you aren’t sure if you will enjoy it you can go and try for free – love that!

Jelly Belly Warehouse Tour

Are you a fan of Jelly Belly jelly beans?! Then you definitely want to head out to the Jelly Belly Visitors Center. They have a FREE tour where they take you through the warehouse and explain the origin of the Jelly Belly. And the best part – at the end of the tour they give you FREE Jelly Belly’s! After that spend time in the store for anything and everything Jelly Belly – it is the largest Jelly Belly store I have ever seen. And you can even sample flavors of Jelly Belly’s and fudge.

Petrifying Springs Biergarten

A German Biergarten in the middle of a county park. Love it! You put a deposit on a “boot” – a big glass when you get there – it is $5 cash only. Then order and pay for what you want to drink. Before you leave turn in the token they give you for the glass and you get your $5 back.

They also have super big pretzels and a few other German style snack foods. Wednesday night is trivia night and pretty much every other night of the week they have something else going on.

This is perfect for parents since it is surrounded by a big open field that the kids can run and play on while you sit at the picnic table and enjoy your beer! Win – Win!!

Petrifying Springs (or Pets)

This is the county park where the Biergarten is located. Besides the Biergarten they also have trails for short hikes and paved bike path that runs through the whole park. Plus multiple playgrounds and pavilions you can rent or just hang out in if no one is there.

If you like Golf be sure to check out the golf course here. It is priced well and is a nice course.

Hawthorn Hollow is another fun outdoor place to check out!

Parkside Cross Country Trail

If you are into trail running or just like to go on a nice walk be sure to checkout the Parkside Cross Country Trail – which is located right across the street from Pets and the Biergarten.

In Winter you can cross country ski here too.

Just be aware if there is a cross country race going on you will not be able to go on the trails.

Golf courses

There are a variety of golf courses in Kenosha at great prices and nice courses! Petrifying Springs, Muni and Brighton Dale are all owned by the city. Then if you are looking for a private owned course you can check out Maplecrest.

Disc Golf

Looking for a different thing to do? Check out the professionally built Disc Golf course at UW Parkside! The course is woven throughout 700 acres and is an 18 hole course! If you don’t have equipment be sure to check out the Disc Golf Pro-shop located in the University Bookstore – they have everything you would need to buy to play a round!

Kenosha Lakefront

Kenosha has done a great job focusing on the Lakefront and making it a great place to go to hang out for the day, to have a picnic or to go for a nice walk. There is nice walking trail, parks, beaches, flowers, and benches everywhere.

Trolley Ride

When you are downtown jump on the Historic Trolley for a tour of downtown between Kemper Center and Carthage. What kid doesn’t like a trolley ride!

Beaches

No, this isn’t Florida but there are still nice beaches to visit in Kenosha! The water is a little bit colder and don’t let a lake fool you – the currents and riptides can be more dangerous than an ocean. So be aware.

On a sunny day bring the sand toys and beach chairs and spend a day hanging out at the beach! There are 5 beaches in Kenosha on Lake Michigan to pick from.

Peanut Butter and Jam

One of our favorite summer activities! Head down to the lakefront with your lawn chairs, dinner, and drinks to enjoy a FREE concert! They do this every Thursday in the summer and it is awesome! Bring your own and free music. Love it!

Stella Hotel

Not open yet! But opening soon! A Boutique Hotel – with on-site restaurant/bar and seasonal rooftop bar with views of Lake Michigan. I can’t wait to check this one out when it opens.

Wyndham Garden Kenosha Harborside

An older hotel that has been remodeled. Located right in downtown by a lot of the attractions and museums. Walk everywhere!

Candlewood Suites Kenosha

This hotel (and a variety of others) are located out by I-94. It is about a 15 minute drive to get to downtown from here. It is located by a lot of the chain restaurants in town and shopping.

What To Eat

Pizza!! We’ve traveled the country and we still think Kenosha has the best thin crust pizza any where. You can’t lose picking from Villa D Carlo, Tenutas, or Casa Capri, just to name a few.

There are multiple security token standards in development. ETHNews talked to a securities lawyer, an Ethereum developer, a finance professor, and two entrepreneurs about what their future means on a technical and regulatory level.

As we head into 2019, it is obvious that security tokens and security token offerings haven't been the "next big thing" many people thought they would be in 2018. But with legal clarity (potentially) on the horizon and technology quickly evolving, 2019 could be a turning point for blockchain-based digital securities.

As Robin Sosnow, Esq., Partner at Digital Securities Law Group in New York City, explains:

"A digital securities offering or 'STO' (security token offering) is an offering of traditional securities for fundraising purposes in a digitized format. Instead of receiving paper or electronic share certificates, investors receive digital tokens that represent the economics the investor is bargaining for in the deal."

Since September 2018 alone, numerous standards for legal security tokens have been proposed across multiple blockchains, at least partly in response to new and upcoming laws from states such as Delaware on how financial and other company records could legally utilize blockchains. Proposed and in-development standards include ERC1400, ERC1404, ERC1462, ERC884, ST-20 (Polymath), and Swarm's SRC20.

While the various security token standards in use and development signal enthusiasm for blockchain-based investing, the lack of consensus around a single token standard creates issues for interoperability.

"Interoperability means different pieces of software can talk to each other and exchange information," explains Stephen McKeon, chief strategy advisor at Security Token Academy, partner at Collaborative Fund, and finance professor at the University of Oregon. "At a high level, this means digital wallets, digital IDs, digital securities, and exchanges all need to speak the same language (or at least know how to translate each other's languages)."

The lack of interoperability is two-fold, though. One concern is that the lack of a common security token standard means that it is difficult for a security-offering platform, or any other digital infrastructure built to interact with security tokens, to support more than one issuer's token. The other issue is that those offering and buying securities need a way to prove regulatory compliance, which is difficult when every issuer has different protocols for collecting and proving compliance-related information.

Philipp Pieper, co-founder and CEO of Swarm (not to be confused with the distributed storage platform of the same name), a nonprofit providing open infrastructure for digital securities through its private equity-specific blockchain, comments:

"I would say that in the current 'early days' era of security tokens we have the equivalent of a few separate app stores (issuance platforms). Each uses its own system for creating apps (tokens). None of them talk to each other today, so to connect to other necessary parts of the ecosystem there has to be a proprietary integration for each one. There is no common protocol underneath it all … there is not today an Android-like ecosystem where all of these app stores, and all the other market participants that make this all work, can plug in."

To address the concern about the lack of standards regulatory compliance verification, Swarm has created an interoperability-focused security token protocol called Market Access Protocol (MAP), "to solve existing inefficiencies and difficulties encountered by token issuers, investors, exchanges, and qualification providers" as they explain on their website." MAP, which stands for Market Access Protocol, acts as a tool to determine whether a wallet is compliant with securities regulations, and only allows transactions to occur if compliance is verified. Exchanges can integrate MAP to ensure compliant transactions, investors can use a MAP wallet to prove investor status across platforms, and token-issuers can ensure that investors have accreditation. And it's not just for Swarm's SRC20 tokens.

In a Medium post announcing the release of MAP, Swarm advertises that "MAP can be opened to any other token infrastructure to be used as a data ruleset/transfer agent on other blockchains." Pieper attributes this blockchain agnosticism to Swarm's not-for-profit business model. "For-profit companies are duty bound to deliver maximum return to their shareholders/VCs and their bottom line, not to a community or other ecosystem participants," he says. "They can't provide the infrastructure, but that model is still compatible with MAP – they can build on it like anyone else and offer their service and utilize MAP to serve their customers."

While MAP offers a way for investors, exchanges, and token-issuers to ensure regulatory compliance, this doesn't address other problems associated with the abundance of differing securities token standards. The tokens may still be technically incapable of integrating with various dApps, exchanges, or EDCCs (smart contracts). For this reason, Pieper believes very few of the standards popping up will ultimately be adopted outside of the "walled gardens within which they are being created." Yet he says he's glad they are all being created because it's a sign of a lot of people seeing the potential in digital securities.

But Antoine Tardif, co-founder and CEO of Securities.io, a company developing a news and token listing platform, sees room for a multitude of security token standards. He imagines a future where token issuers develop their own protocol that caters to their client base as well as to regulations they are abiding by.

"For example, a token issuer for a crowdfunding platform may use a protocol that caters to a regulation CF raise versus a regulation A+ raise," he says, referring to types of securities offerings. "Once digital securities have evolved, there could potentially be a different protocol for every industry. For example, the requirements of a venture fund may be different than tokenized real estate, or even a piece of tokenized art."

However, if there is to be a wide variety of industry-specific security token standards, it is important for the sake of interoperability that they be developed in consideration of each other, and according to some shared, underlying standard. Boris Mann, co-founder of Special Projects & Decentralized Engineering Company (SPADE), an Ethereum-focused development company, says different proposed standards can also be combined, particularly those that are proposed within Ethereum's development community, where most digital security standards are being developed.

He says:

"The way that application layer standards are currently defined in the Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) process, many of them [standards] can be combined. So, you can have a token that conforms to the ERC20 standard [Ethereum's base standard] but includes additional features that make it compliant with other standards."

Mann therefore thinks the various groups offering up security token standards need to work together more closely.

"The entire industry will win when they understand that a standards process is the most important," he says. "Having it work just on one issuance platform or one exchange isn't going to work. And that 'winning' doesn't look like 'owning' ERC20 (Ethereum's original standard), but rather partnerships, interoperability, and regulatory alignment. Lots of the finance people in the space don't understand open source, never mind standards, so I expect this to shake out over time."

The Flynn Case Should Be Dismissed In The Name Of Justice

Below is my column in the Hill newspaper on the new evidence released in the case of Michael Flynn. As I said two years ago, it is unlikely the Judge Emmet Sullivan will dismiss this case regardless of such abuses, but he should. As we discussed, there has been a concerted effort by media and legal experts to shrug away these highly disturbing documents by saying that such abuses happen all the time. Journalist Ben Wittes, one of James Comey’s most vocal defenders, went even seemed to make such abuse of Flynn into a victory for racial justice:

“If you’re outraged by the FBI’s tactics with Flynn, keep in mind that they do these things every day against drug dealers, gang members, and terrorists. Except those people are black, Hispanic, and Middle Eastern—not “lock ‘er up” lily white.”

Many of us have spent our careers fighting such abuses for people who are not “lily white.” That does not excuse abuses of people There was a time when MSNBC, CNN, the Washington Post and other outlets were voices against such prosecutorial abuse. However, in this age of rage, even this record is dismissed as “routine” to avoid undermining a crushingly consistent narrative that the Russian investigation was based on real crimes, albeit collateral crimes. The “nothing to see here” coverage sacrifices both legal and journalistic values to to maintain a transparently biased narrative.

Previously undisclosed documents in the case of former national security adviser Michael Flynn offer us a chilling blueprint on how top FBI officials not only sought to entrap the former White House aide but sought to do so on such blatantly unconstitutional and manufactured grounds.

These new documents further undermine the view of both the legitimacy and motivations of those investigations under former FBI director James Comey. For all of those who have long seen a concerted effort within the Justice Department to target the Trump administration, the fragments will read like a Dead Sea Scrolls version of a “deep state” conspiracy.

One note reflects discussions within the FBI shortly after the 2016 election on how to entrap Flynn in an interview concerning his conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. According to Fox News, the note was written by the former FBI head of counterintelligence, Bill Priestap, after a meeting with Comey and his deputy director, Andrew McCabe.

The note states, “What is our goal? Truth and admission or to get him to lie, so we can prosecute him or get him fired?” This may have expressed an honest question over the motivation behind this targeting of Flynn, a decision for which Comey later publicly took credit when he had told an audience that he decided he could “get away” with sending “a couple guys over” to the White House to set up Flynn and make the case.

The new documents also explore how the Justice Department could get Flynn to admit breaking the Logan Act, a law that dates back to from 1799 which makes it a crime for a citizen to intervene in disputes between the United States and foreign governments. It has never been used to convict a citizen and is widely viewed as flagrantly unconstitutional.

In his role as the national security adviser to the president elect, there was nothing illegal in Flynn meeting with Kislyak. To use this abusive law here was utterly absurd, although other figures such as former acting Attorney General Sally Yates also raised it. Nevertheless, the FBI had latched onto this abusive law to target the retired Army lieutenant general.

Another newly released document is an email from former FBI lawyer Lisa Page to former FBI special agent Peter Strzok, who played the leadership role in targeting Flynn. In the email, Page suggests that Flynn could be set up by making a passing reference to a federal law that criminalizes lies to federal investigators. She suggested to Strzok that “it would be an easy way to just casually slip that in.” So this effort was not about protecting national security or learning critical intelligence. It was about bagging Flynn for the case in the legal version of a canned trophy hunt.

It is also disturbing that this evidence was only recently disclosed by the Justice Department. When Flynn was pressured to plead guilty to a single count of lying to investigators, he was unaware such evidence existed and that the federal investigators who had interviewed him told their superiors they did not think that Flynn intentionally lied when he denied discussing sanctions against Russia with Kislyak. Special counsel Robert Mueller and his team changed all that and decided to bring the dubious charge. They drained Flynn financially then threatened to charge his son.

Flynn never denied the conversation and knew the FBI had a transcript of it. Indeed, President Trump publicly discussed a desire to reframe Russian relations and renegotiate such areas of tensions. But Flynn still ultimately pleaded guilty to the single false statement to federal investigators. This additional information magnifies the doubts over the case.

Various FBI officials also lied and acted in arguably criminal or unethical ways, but all escaped without charges. McCabe had a supervisory role in the Flynn prosecution. He was then later found by the Justice Department inspector general to have repeatedly lied to investigators. While his case was referred for criminal charges, McCabe was fired but never charged. Strzok was also fired for his misconduct in the investigation.

Comey intentionally leaked FBI material, including potentially classified information but was never charged. Another FBI agent responsible for the secret warrants used for the Russia investigation had falsified evidence to maintain the investigation. He is still not indicted. The disconnect of these cases with the treatment of Flynn is galling and grotesque.

Even the judge in the case has added to this disturbing record. As Flynn appeared before District Judge Emmet Sullivan for sentencing, Sullivan launched into him and said he could be charged with treason and with working as an unregistered agent on behalf of Turkey. Pointing to a flag behind him, Sullivan declared to Flynn, “You were an unregistered agent of a foreign country while serving as the national security adviser to the president of the United States. That undermines everything this flag over here stands for. Arguably, you sold your country out.”

Flynn was never charged with treason or with being a foreign agent. But when Sullivan menacingly asked if he wanted a sentence then and there, Flynn wisely passed. It is a record that truly shocks the conscience. While rare, it is still possible for the district court to right this wrong since Flynn has not been sentenced. The Justice Department can invite the court to use its inherent supervisory authority to right a wrong of its own making. That extraordinary admission is likely what it would take. As the Supreme Court made clear in 1932, “universal sense of justice” is a stake in such cases. It is the “duty of the court to stop the prosecution in the interest of the government itself to protect it from the illegal conduct of its officers and to preserve the purity of its courts.”

Flynn was a useful tool for everyone and everything but justice. Mueller had ignored the view of the investigators and coerced Flynn to plead to a crime he did not commit to gain damaging testimony against Trump and his associates that Flynn did not have. The media covered Flynn to report the flawed theory of Russia collusion and to foster the view that some sort of criminal conspiracy was being uncovered by Mueller. Even the federal judge used Flynn to rail against what he saw as a treasonous plot. What is left in the wake of the prosecution is an utter travesty of justice.

Justice demands a dismissal of his prosecution. But whatever the “goal” may have been in setting up Flynn, justice was not one of them.

However, yesterday when I called them, they now said they cannot transfer the NCB to the van as it would be being transferred 'mid-season' to a different car policy. Question on best company for classic/historic car insurance?

Our family has had State Farm for 70 years now, several generations, and in the last 10 years or so we have been progressively more & more disappointed in their caring and customer service. Maybe its just the 'assistants' that my local SF agent (who never talks to his clients any more) use, they both seem to have just horrible attitutudes, sarcastic, and act like you are a complete PITA every time you call. I even have an email from his main assistant that I asked her to forward to the actual agent because I was told he was the only one that could answer my question, and just today I was SHOCKED when I re-read the email, and saw in the forward of my email when his assistant sent it on to the actual SF agent, She said This guy will just not give up, he keeps haunting me about this issue! The absence of any verifiable documentation is the red flag that tells you this scheme simply doesn’t work. But let me take this a step farther. Let’s set aside for a moment the whole question of the legal basis for the “no money lent” argument. Let’s take a huge silly leap for a moment and say that the system is valid from a legal perspective. Well, it’s STILL not going to work for the average consumer! Why? Two reasons. First, it requires a fight in court, and the average consumer wants to go to court over debt-related matters about as much as they want to have multiple root-canals without anesthetic.

Second, nothing gets resolved this way. I’ve worked with thousands of people struggling with serious debt problems. I talk to people in this situation every day. I can’t think of a single instance where the person’s priority was anything other than to GET THE MATTER RESOLVED PERMANENTLY. The techniques used by the debt elimination scammers do not achieve any resolution at all. Even if the debtor successfully gets a creditor to back off from its collection effort, all that will happen is the creditor will sell the account to a debt purchasing company, who will then try to collect all over again. So the whole process will have to be repeated, over and over again as the debt gets sold multiple times down the line. There is no resolution here. Just a bag of useless tricks. Boil it all down and here is what the debt elimination scammers are telling you: Walk away from your debts, don’t pay, and duck and cover. That’s it. It’s a lot of hot air and bogus nonsense, and it only exists because debt-weary consumers are desperate for solutions.

I was inspired by my own grandfather’s autobiography, where I learned a lot about his life and found lots of wisdom I didn’t get the chance to hear from him directly. I wanted to replicate that sensation everywhere, and I felt that no dominant consumer platform had succeeded in tapping the idea of building your “digital legacy.” I really loved the idea of mentorship & wisdom-sharing, so it made sense to me at the time. I also researched and found that half of the US population would be above the age of 50 by the end of 2017, that this age group controlled 70% of disposable income in the country and that they were suffering from the widespread epidemic of social isolation. Legaats was meant to help alleviate that problem! How did you attract your first customers? Which marketing strategies did you use? 📈For the initial user base, I attracted them organically through my own network. I’d tell friends about what I was working on, and they’d tell other friends who they thought might be interested. I’d grow the email list as best I could, and try to send out interviews & pieces of wisdom I’d score from top-notch executives that I knew people would want to read about. These executives were previous mentors, fathers of friends, and really random people I’d meet through warm introductions who were attracted to the concept. Why did you stop trying taking Legaats forward? ⛔️The main reasons were: a) too slow to validate assumptions, b) no clear business model, c) lack of empathy with target users, d) not enjoying execution, and e) no unique competitive advantage. In more detail:Too slow to validate assumptions:In a previous version of this article, I said that our main problem was not having a tech co-founder for this specific idea. In hindsight, that was wrong. Not having a tech cofounder hindered our ability to build technology quickly & cheaply, but the reality is that we could have done dozens of cheap low-tech experiments to validate our core assumptions (i.e. do senior citizens alleviate social isolation by documenting life lessons using an online product? How easy is this behavior for a typically non-tech savvy audience?) I was too obsessed with trying to build something just to show people in the industry that I had built some sort of digital product, when in reality it would have been much smarter to validate our core idea quickly and spending as little as possible. Our current venture, The Lobby was validated through an unpaid LinkedIn status and spreadsheets, where we made hundreds of dollars without writing a single line of code and without any technical person involved.No clear business model:I may be wrong, but I think we’re way past the age where you can build a consumer-facing startup without a clear business model and hope to monetize once you have millions of users. I’m sure there still will be success stories in this realm, but with the dominance of FB and Google in the ad-space, it’s hard to see the trend that made companies like Yik Yak and Secret big prevailing. Legaats didn’t have a clear business model, and the only ones I could think of (such as charging for storage) were really not well thought out or validated. With the trends discussed, I think it’s now more important than ever to have a clearer picture of your business model even in the earliest days of your company.Lack of empathy with target users:After reading my grandfather’s autobiography, I thought everyone would want to know this kind of stuff about their own ancestors. Thus, I convinced myself that my experience was enough of a passion-driver that I’d figure out how to replicate this sensation for people everywhere.The reality is much more subtle & nuanced. I started building a solution for an audience I fundamentally could not empathize with. I enjoyed mentorship and reading wisdom-type content from my grandfather, on Quora, and on Medium, but I did not understand what it took to actually get people of that age group to actually create it, and frequently.How could I assume seniors solve their social isolation by using a web app? Maybe they just need their own families to visit them more? I’m sure someone will build something that alleviates this demographic’s isolation issue, but it will probably come from someone who can deploy a much higher degree of empathy with this audience than I ever could.Not enjoying the execution:This was the one I least expected, but probably the single most important reason I stopped working on Legaats. All the learnings above could have made me choose to pivot our model or probe into a more focused, tangible problem to solve for this audience; however, because I wasn’t enjoying the execution I decided to do something different altogether.I was just not enjoying the most basic things about the process. I remember the first few meetings with my users who were 50+ years-old CEO’s, and I was deriving so much amazing wisdom & insight from them, it felt like a dream come true that this was my job.However, I quickly realized that one thing was enjoying my conversations with them, and another was getting them and myself to produce this content online. This was incredibly frustrating, difficult, and inefficient. Try explaining to 70 & 80-year olds how to write “blog-style” posts on a web app or to record videos of themselves giving advice and you’ll see what I mean.Again I’ll say, someone might figure this out, but I came to a conclusion that it should probably not be me. I think the biggest red flag was when I realized I didn’t even feel like getting my own grandmother to use the product.No unfair competitive advantage:This last one was also very important to me. Up until Legaats, I had spent my entire life working on things that were extremely related to finance and business. Yet, here I was, trying to build a social digital product, where most conceivable success stories with those kinds of products started with at least one great coder on the team who put these products together for fun.Looking back, it was pretty presumptuous of me to think I was going to figure out some strategy to hook millions of people on to a web application without even understanding the basics of building a simple website, without ever having worked with engineers, or having someone with those skills by my side.That’s not to say it’s impossible, even for someone in my shoes — I just realized that life is short, and I’d probably prefer trying to start something where I actually have some unique insight or competitive advantage.My new startup idea is based upon my existing network of top professionals, and is essentially solving a problem that I solved for myself and that I’ve helped dozens others solve over the years as a hobby. In short, it’s a problem I know exists and it’s one that I understand. The execution is something I unconsciously enjoy because I’ve been doing it for so long on the side. Maybe our current solution isn’t the best way to solve it, but the fact that we got dozens of paying customers from day 1 with $0 investment is a much better start than what I was doing with Legaats.Also, I can have empathy with my users because I’ve been on both sides of that market, and I also have what I think is a unique insight, which seems to be driving some of our initial traction. If I didn’t have this insight or my network as an advantage, I probably would’ve moved on to another idea, given what I learned with Legaats. What were your biggest disadvantages? ⚠️Two big ones: a) inexperience on what it takes to cheaply validate startup ideas and b) not being the target user for my own product. Elaborated on above. If you had to start over, what would you do differently? ⌛️It’s hard to answer this because this is how most of the people I respect learned the same hard lessons – by giving it a shot. However, in an ideal world, if I could go back with the knowledge I have today, this is how I would’ve gone about executing or at least validating Legaats:I would have started a YouTube channel where I would ask 3-5 families to post videos of their grandparents reciting life lessons and videos every week. This costs $0 and I would have truly been able to emulate the user behavior which is getting people of this age group to interact with technology and document pieces of wisdom. I would have then proceeded to collect arduous feedback on this entire process (i.e. did this make you feel better, how hard was this, etc.) and studied the challenges of getting people in this demographic to interact with technology as a solution to their emotional issues.To be honest, I can’t tell you more because, with my new mentality, I would have done this long enough to then figure out my next step. It would have been a much more iterative process. I’d have saved tons of money doing things this way and still learned more about my users than what I did in 7 months with Legaats. I would also have focused much more harshly on potential business models before plunging into spending any money on development or deciding to pursue the idea.Lastly, I would have been much more ruthless on detaching myself from my idea. The more I think I can do this, the more merit whatever I choose to do will actually have. Did Legaats’s failure help you achieve success with The Lobby? In which ways? 💵We haven’t yet “succeeded” in The Lobby, but the experience with Legaats definitely helped me gain some meaningful perspective on how to truly solve a real problem, and not one that sounds plausible in my head. That, as well as most of the other lessons mentioned in here. What's your advice for someone who is just starting? 📢One phrase to all my fellow solo nontechnical founders: You don’t need a web app, a product, or too much money to validate your idea. Everything you’re saying or thinking to convince yourself that you do is not true, and you’ll have a much less painful experience if you listen to what I’m saying. Solve a real problem, and find the cheapest way possible to figure out if people give a crap about what you’re doing and if they’re willing to pay for it. Even with the most techie concepts, you can now build a landing page for free, spend $10-$50 on FB ads, and figure out if there’s demand for the product. You can also leverage tons of other existing technology to help you get you a cheap MVP that isn’t completely low-tech (YouTube channels, email newsletters, landing pages, spreadsheets, free trials of necessary tools, etc.). Which entrepreneur/startup/sales/business/marketing book would you recommend? 📙My two favorite work-related books are Zero to One by Peter Thiel and Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. Zero to One really helped me understand that in order to do unique or extraordinary things, you have to think in a unique way. By thinking like the rest of the world, it’s easy to follow what everyone else does or says and lose the ability to think individually and objectively.Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell reinforced a very important concept for me which is that there is no such thing as an overnight success. Every person who became successful “overnight” had countless hours of deliberate & hard work before they reached a point of visible success. This book is mostly a reminder that if I want to achieve my goals, I should focus on putting my head down and trying to get a little bit better every day, instead of trying to find shortcuts. TMNT: Samantha Allan Park Ch. #4

*Two days later*

“*sigh*” Donnie rubbed the sides of his head in frustration as he stared at his computer screen. It had been about a day and a half since the flash drive had been stolen and he was having a difficult time tracking it down.

Everyone had been assigned a job to complete in order to try and find the girl who had stolen from them. Leo was instructed to look up articles on unique and gifted women throughout the state, Raph was told to look up records for the top female criminals throughout the state, Mikey was given the task of searching through popular social media outlets for anything suspicious, and Donnie was using his technology to search for signals of the flash drive being used. There was a tracking code within the data that was on the drive, so Donnie should have received a signal of when and where the drive was being used. But so far, nothing had happened.

The guys had hoped that there would be a lead somewhere, maybe an article talking about a criminal who was known for stealing whom the cops were on the lookout for, or a student who had made a recent discovery that was related to the info on the drive, anything that would give away any hints as to who may have entered their lair.

Leo and Mikey were sitting at the table, while Raph was sitting on the couch on the opposite side of the room where Donnie sat.

Mikey was enjoying his portion of the search, but Leo and Raph weren’t as interested. “Ugh come on Donnie, how much longer do we have to do this? There’s no police statements talking about any major criminals, and you also haven’t heard of any recent Foot activity. So why are we still sitting around? I say we take to the streets and look for this chick!” Leo rolled his eyes. “Raph, we don’t know anything about this girl. We don’t know how old she is, what she officially looks like, where she’s from, not a single thing. All we know is Sensei’s description of what she looks like and that’s it.” “So?” Raph glared across the room at Leo. “We know she has black hair and black eyes, so let’s start there. Maybe check out some usual spots where criminals like to hang out at, I’m sure she’d be somewhere like that!” Donnie sighed. “That’s the thing Raph.” He spun his chair around, taking the first time in hours to look away from his cluster of monitors. “We don’t know if she’s a criminal. What if she’s just a gifted student who found a way to find this place? We can’t just go attacking random people.” “She STOLE from us! How does that not make her a criminal? Why are we defending this chick?” Leo stood up. “We’re not defending her, we’re trying to analyze the situation! If we run in and just start attacking any and every black haired girl we can find in New York then this situation is going to get a million times worse!” “Guys chill, I can’t investigate with you all yelling.” Leo took the phone that Mikey had been using and rolled his eyes after looking at the screen. “Mikey, how is watching BuzzFeed videos on MySpace helping us try to track down this girl?” Mikey nervously laughed, trying to lighten the mood, even though his eldest brother was glaring down at him, and he could feel Raph’s eyes glaring at him from behind as well. “Ahhhhh, hehe, well, you see-” Donnie tried to intervene “Uh guys?” “MySpace?” Raph was confused. “Why are you using MySpace? Who the hell uses MySpace anymore?” “I do Raph, I’m new to this! You know we’re not allowed to go on social media sites!” “Guys?” Leo then turned to Raph. “Wait, how do you know that? Do you go on these types of sites?” “Uhhhhh” Raph looked away nervously. “Sometimes I like to see if we can get ahead of the enemy, you know?” “You don’t post anything do you?” “Guys!” “Yes Leo, because my goal in life is to post online and let people know of our existence! I mean I can understand you questioning Mikey but questioning me, seriously? I’m not stupid!” “Heyyyy” Mikey frowned. “What are you trying to say?” “I’m saying that-” “GUYS!!!”

All three brothers looked ever at Donnie. “Guys, Raph is right about just sitting around. Instead of having you guys spend all day looking at electronic devices just waiting for something to change, you guys can just check back every once in a while throughout the day, and I’ll be the main one to be on the constant look out for a signal of the device being used.” “Thank you!” “Wait!” Leo held up his hand to stop his brother. “Don, that’s not fair to you though.” Donnie shook his head. “It’s no problem. I know more about this this stuff anyway, and I want to be ready for when this girl makes a move, so it’s best if I’m the one sitting around all day looking at these screens. Besides, I already do that on a daily basis” he chuckled. “Alright, but if anything important comes up then tell us immediately.” “Immediately!” Mikey pointed at Donnie. Leo chuckled at his younger brother who was trying to make it seem like he had any idea of what they were talking about. After that, the three brothers left the room to go do whatever. Donnie turned back around to face all of his monitors. He kept waiting for a signal to pop up. If whoever has stolen the device was smart enough to disable so many of his cameras, then it was extremely likely that they would want to look at the information on the drive as soon as possible, so what was taking them so long? And that’s when it hit him, what if it wasn’t necessarily that they wanted to wait, but that they had to? He then pulled up a tab on one of the many monitors and searched for a list of high schools throughout the state. He decided that while he waited for the signal, he would hack into the main databases from each of the schools on the list and look for both current students and also graduates from the past couple of years, and search for and note as many of the black haired females with black eyes that he could find from each one. “Well, at least it’s a start. Let’s get to it.”

*Same day, Monday*

Today was Monday, so I was in robotics club after school. Club got out in about five more minutes, then I would be on my way to a library halfway across town.

There were six places that Jay had taken me where I would be allowed to use computers that had the software to be able to prevent the files from getting hacked or stolen while I was reading them: Jay’s work building, the university that he had attended, a library, a hospital, a bank, and an art studio. Luckily he had friends at all these locations that gave me a pass that would allow me to go inside on my own time. They all were thrilled to know that someone was interested in their software and what they used it for, and since they all knew my brother so well, they believed they could trust that I wouldn’t do anything stupid or reckless at their workplace. Bless these people’s souls for that.

I decided to go to the furthest location first which was the art studio. The passes didn’t have any specific information on them about who I was, only that I was a guest who was to be allowed inside and where I was allowed to go inside the building.

Right after club ended I went home and changed. When I got to my room I put on a blonde wig, blue contacts, and I used some make-up to make my skin look paler than it already was. I hated seeing my hair be blonde. I don’t have a problem with blonde hair, but I don’t think it suits me very well. I packed a small cross-body bag with my phone, keys, any important passes or cards, and both my own and the stolen flash drive. I should have been in more crowded public areas tonight, so I didn’t bring a weapon with me this time.

By the time I was ready to go it was about five in the afternoon. I left through the exit in the back of the apartment building and then walked towards a wooden fence that lead to another alley. Once I got through, I then left through that alley and entered the streets of New York. This was in case there were any cameras nearby, hopefully they would see me come from a different direction than from my actual building. I headed down towards the subway and rode the train for about another half hour, arriving at the studio by six. Once inside the building, I tried to act normal and not super excited that I was finally about to look into the device. I made my way to an empty room with about ten computers. I punched in a code that Jay’s friend had given me and entered the room. I sat down at a computer and quickly got a post it note and put it over top the camera on the front of the computer screen. Then, I plugged in a flash drive of my own that contained a security system that should help warn me of any intruders, and then plugged in the flash drive I had taken. A folder popped up and after I clicked on it, tons of new folders flooded the page. I decided to start with the folder at the very top of the screen labeled “TCRI’s past.” I was then brought to multiple typed up documents talking about past experiments that were conducted at TCRI. I began to wonder if the area I had discovered was an underground base for someone who worked for TCRI, I mean hey that would be a genius idea for a hiding place. The sewers definitely wouldn’t have been my first guess as to where someone’s hiding spot would be.

As I was reading, there was a highlighted section within the document. The highlight’s talked about a chemical of some kind that was going to be used for medical research and how the chemical was used on five animal test subjects. From the way the document was worded, it seemed like someone didn’t want every individual piece of information from this experiment known. It seemed suspicious, but I wanted to see what else there was to read about.

I then went back and clicked on a link titled “Our DNA.” A few charts then popped up that talked about regular human DNA and also about altered strands. I wondered if this had anything to do the animals that had been tested on in the previous document that I had read, but why did it say ‘our’ then?

Suddenly, a pop up stated that an unknown user was trying to access the information I was looking at. I then started typing in some codes that would block this person from viewing what was on my screen. I had to be quick. Dang, I hoped that I would have had a longer time to look at the info that was on the drive, but just like I had suspected, the owner was quick to pick up on my location.

After a few minutes of quickly punching in codes, I was able to block the intruder, but I knew it would only be a matter of minutes to seconds before they found another way in. I quickly took out the flash drives, took a breath to calm myself, and walked out of the room.

The whole way home I wondered if the intruder could be anywhere nearby by coincidence. Gosh that would be insane if they happened to be in that building for whatever reason, or just happened to be on this subway car at this exact same moment that I was.

As I got back to the alley, I took off my wig and tucked it under my shirt. I entered the building and went straight to my apartment, setting up my security devices once again. I was scared, but at the same time intrigued. I was curious as to what this chemical was, and why it was so important. I decided that I would research about it more tomorrow, and for now, I was going to try to stay calm and just focus on my school work, heading back to my ordinary life.

*Same day, Monday*

Donnie had made a decent sized list of all the girls with black hair and black eyes that were between 13 and 25 years old. He then had his brother’s look for anything they could find about the girls on the list. There were a few leads, but nothing that hinted that these girls could figure out how to sneak into the lab. Plus, the majority of them had been out with friends all that Friday night according to their social media pages.

Just as Donnie began looking into an article about one of the girls in college, an alert popped up on his monitor. “I got it…..GUYS I GOT IT!” The other three looked up and hurried over and stood behind their brother. “Where is she?” Leo questioned. “She’s at…..got it, an art studio.” “Soooooo, what’re you doing dude?” asked a curious Mikey. “Well, I’m using a security program to hack into the computer she’s using. It should allow me to steal all the information on the flash drive and basically wipe it clean while all the info is transferred to my computer where it will stay safe. But I just need to hack into the studios database and then into whichever computer she’s using.” “Ahhhhh….right…” Donnie chuckled. “I’m moving the info on the flash drive somewhere where our thief can’t touch it anymore.” “Dude, why didn’t you just say that before?” Donnie continued typing away. “Aha! I’m in, now I just need to…crap, she’s blocking me out already?!” Donnie continued to type away furiously. It was quiet for the longest time, no one wanted to break Donnie’s concentration. After a while, the brainiac of the bunch sighed in defeat. Leo scrunched his forehead. “What happened?” “She got away. AGAIN.” “How did she do that?” Raph clenched his fists, this girl was really starting to piss him off. He didn’t like seeing his brother so stressed out, and the fact that she beat Donnie at something he was a genius at worried him even more. “She knew the right codes to use in order to block mine. Just as I was about to dive back in, she must have pulled the flash drive and left. There’s still ways for us to hunt her down, but this would have made things a lot easier for us, well more so easier for me specifically.” Mikey frowned, he knew that his older brainiac brother was mentally stressing and complaining about himself for not being able to win this electronic battle. “So what do we do now bro?” Donnie began typing again. “If I can get access to the buildings security cameras, which I’m doing now, we can look and see who was in the building and maybe even who was in the room of the computer that was used to get a better visual of who the thief is. Then maybe we can narrow our search down a lot more.” He pulled up one of the buildings cameras on each screen. The four looked back and forth from each monitor, but they couldn’t find a black haired woman anywhere. Donnie then figured out which room was used and pulled up the video from the time that he was trying to hack into the studios computer. He could only see the side of the girls face, but to his surprise, he was staring at a woman with blonde hair rather than black. Leo looked and saw his brothers jaw drop. “Now what’s wrong?” “Well, there’s a few scenarios as to what I’m seeing. Scenario A. she is or at some point was wearing a disguise. Scenario B. she has already shared or lost the flash drive and now someone totally different has it. Either way, she’s made the whole situation a lot more complicated. If this person on the screen is the same person who stole from us, then this chick is good at what she does.” “So what do we do now?” “I’ll have to keep waiting. It might take a few days, but if I can get signals from where she’s at, I can try to figure out some generic ideas as to where she lives based on the locations of the buildings she’s in. Also, the more places she visits, the more camera angles we can get. If we can get closer looks at her, and also angles that show which ways she heads home, we may be able to pin point her home location.”

All four brothers smiled. Finally they had a plan that could lead them to catch this girl. It was a risky plan, but hopefully the result would end up in their favor. ______________________________________________________________________________

*4 days later*

It took him four more days, but Donnie had finally started to plan how he and his brothers would try to capture this girl.

Donnie smiled. “Alright, it’s time to take action.” Leo walked over to his brother. “How did you figure out who we should go after?” “Get ready, it’s a long explanation.” He breathed in as his other two brothers also walked over to hear how everything went down. “Each time I got an alert that the drive was being used, I would try to hack into the computer that was being used and retrieve what I could, and I was actually able to secure some of the documents. Once the girl had fled the scene, I analyzed any video footage I could get my hands on: videos from the building the thief had been in, security cameras outside of the building in the direction she had gone once leaving the building, subway cams, etc. That’s when I began to notice a pattern in the thief’s schedule. Usually she would read over the documents later in the evening or sometime at night, but on Thursday the thief had observed the documents in the early afternoon rather than closer to night time as usual.” Leo nodded. “So that’s why you had us check all those school databases for absentees, right?” Donnie smiled and nodded. “Exactly! I found a few female absentees who had similar body figures like the girl we had seen in the videos. Once the options had been narrowed down to about twenty girls or so, I began looking into some of the women’s more personal information. Based on academic records alone, the options were then narrowed down to about ten girls, and the location of Thursday’s visit narrowed this down to three. After A LOT of research, I discovered that one of the three girls was in contact with someone who has connections to multiple people in each building that the signal for the drive being used at. I looked into information about this girl and learned that she has been in school clubs like robotics and mathletes, and she also plays soccer and dances. Her AP and SAT scores are ridiculously high and she participates in competitions like science fairs. She has to be our girl!”

Raph raised in eye brows in shock. Even though he knew his brother was a genius, it still always shocked him how quickly he could figure out the solution to any situation within a matter of days.

Leo nodded his head and smiled. “So you think it’s time we approach this woman?” “Well, I figured out that she’s living with a man under the last name Park and where his main location is, and based on some of the routes the camera angles showed her taking by bus, train, and on foot, I’ve been able to pin point that they live together in the same complex. So as soon as possible we should carefully approach her and get the flash drive back.” “We should be doing more than that!” Raph was getting angry now. “This chick came into our home and stole from us! I think we should bring her back and question her motives! How do we know she won’t be back again?!” “We’re…we’re not gonna hurt her right?” Mikey was concerned with where this conversation was going. “Well fearless, what’s the plan?” Leo stopped and paused for a moment. “Alright, Donnie figure out the best way for us to get to where she lives. We’ll CAREFULLY try to approach her and see if we can either talk there, or bring her back here where it’s safer for us so that we’re not seen. BUT-” as he looked over at his youngest brother “if she starts getting violent or threatens us in any way, then we begin to use force. If it’s obvious that just talking is too risky for our safety and secrecy, then we bring her back the hard way. In the end, it will be her choice as to how everything plays out.”

Raph grew a nasty smile. From everything he had heard so far, this was no ordinary girl, and he couldn’t wait to see what she was made of. He had waited a whole week to finally go out and catch the thief who had threatened the safety of his family and he was excited to finally get some answers. He cracked his knuckles and faced his brothers. “Alright boys, tonight’s Friday night, let’s have some fun.” And with that, he left the room to go exercise and get himself pumped up for whatever was in store for them later when day turned to night. Mikey’s eyebrows rose as he followed his brother out of the room. “Hey, are we going somewhere?”
