If you don’t mind me asking, what kind of questions? I love this idea!
they aren't stupendous questions tbh!
"If you’re feeling low:
Have you showered/bathed?
What have you eaten today?
Have you eaten some fruit? (it really is a mood booster)
Have you taken your meds/vitamins?
Is your room/living area clean?
Have you moved your body today?
these are basic questions that i think everyone should ask themselves when feeling low because they are basis for well-being
the rest of the questions are tailored towards me and the things that make me feel good
Are your nails in good shape? (when i have my nail strengthener on i am essentially a goddess of health)
Have you had a good conversation today?
Have you read?
(i have a 3rd house stellium if you can't tell lol)
but yeah, i find that boosting your mood before meditating on why you're upset/in a slump helps to avoid spiraling or spiraling further because it's easy for our minds to over-dwell and make a mountain out of a molehill. melodrama can be cathartic from time to time but it can often keep us in a negative mindset and further attach us to our woes
after boosting your mood you can ask yourself
Was it something specific that set you off? Or have you been tucking issues away and they've now overspilled?
Is there anything you need to communicate at this time? (whether to yourself or to someone else)
Think of the areas of your life (well-being, friendship, work, school, romance, family, etc) - Are you feeling a lack of fulfillment in an area? If so, how? & how is this affecting other areas?
What can you realistically do at this time to help the situation/yourself?
i wrote down some questions to ask myself for when i'm feeling particularly low & down in the dumps and even if i just look at the questions it makes me feel lighter
#long post#i have my own self-improvement based blog that i have been curating#i'll share it eventually (:#its mostly personal but#i'm sure i'll make posts for a broader audience

Tumblr Revival
Tl;dr
Tumblr has a large interconnected community of artists and content creators, and should focus on its strengths and what it does right. Instead of trying to compete for space against Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Tumblr should focus on empowering its community and giving that community the tools to develop the site's unparalleled uniqueness.
Tumblr is the crossroads of the internet, with a monthly user traffic of 300 million it is the perfect space for artists, content creators, and small businesses to grow their following without having to fight for a seat at the table against companies with huge budgets.
Hi, I go by Nacho here on tumblr, and I'm sure as many of us on tumblr have noticed, the (hell)site is kinda going downhill. Tumblr was bought by Automattic in fall of 2019, and I am sure they have the best intentions to help tumblr stay afloat. However, I think it's time the community took a more deliberate approach to how tumblr is handled, and hopefully Automattic and @staff will hear us out. I think I have a solid solution to tumblrs money issues, that will help both the site and empower its online communities.
First and foremost, I am not involved with Tumblr or Automattic. I am just a simple blog trying to help out a place that I've been on since 2010, and I would hate to see it die here around 2023.
So, let's get to the root of the problem on tumblr right now. That being money, tumblr is currently costing more money that it produces, as we've seen with its 97% drop in value from 1.1 billion dollar sale to being sold at around 3 million dollars.
So the first thing that must be improved before anything else can be improved on tumblr is how much money they're bringing in a month. I don't think folks on tumblr hate monetization as much as we all collectively say we do, I think the issue is that most advertisers are completely disconnected from the groups they are trying to advertise to on here. Tumblr comprises roughly 65% millennials and 30% gen-z, the two generations that advertisers seem to have the hardest time advertising to for a myriad of reasons. The main one being that they don't fully understand what we want, and sometimes just don't listen to what we are saying.
Lets look at how tumblr makes its money, Tumblr has four main revenue sources,
Ads by sponsored posts
Display ads through video posts
Sponsored Day ads or banner ads
“Premium Themes”
I'll go into depth on all of these and how tumblr could make potential changes to improve their revenue anywhere from three to six months after it implements some or ideally all of these changes.
First tumblr ads and sponsored posts, these changes are going to be contingent on tumblr allowing its users to share, like, and comment on ads much like all other media sites currently allow. Or at least giving advertisers the ability to turn that on or off as a function.
The average tumblr post gets reblogged 14 times, that number increases significantly if the ad is engaging and actually caters to the communities wants and needs. My reasoning for giving users the ability to reblog ads is to increase user engagement while maintaining their current ad vetting process and all of the nonsensical ads that are run on tumblr 90% of the time.
The other reason for allowing tumblr users to share and comment on ads, or have it be an option for advertisers to turn on or off as they'd like, is that the appeal of tumblr is the ability to propagate and obsess over the most niche things (i.e OSHA.)
All the while allowing content that gets shared all over the internet bubble up to the top through the collective hand of the tumblr community. Along with this tumblr has no way for small users to share their own products or services, every single major site has a way for users to advertise their pages or products through the site.
Tumblr is a content machine that creates imagery and memes that get shared all the time across the internet, so the ability to share and curate its own ads is paramount to improving advertising and user engagement on tumblr.
My proposal here is for tumblr to expand its advertising capabilities to all users, while charging a flat rate fee to advertise on tumblr, with additional charges for popular tags or trending tags. Tumblr currently has no self service advertising system much like Facebook does for example. Where facebook charges a daily rate on cost-per-click(CPC) or cost-per-thousand(CPM)
Charging a flat rate fee at a rate of a day, week, month, or quarterly basis with variances in prices based on the lease term and what the advertisers would want to have their ads show up on certain tags. This would open up the doors for small businesses that don't want to advertise on places like facebook, twitter, or google with their complicated CPM and CPC models. Also bringing in more small locally owned businesses with the added value of less competition for ad space on tumblr.
This would also take some of the weight from tumblrs own advertising staff from having to explain a convoluted system to potential advertisers. Creating a simplified model with the the advent of tumblrs own infrastructure able to get a single post to a large variety of users. Where the current ad model uses a “shotgun” method to hit as many people as possible, the tumblr model could encourage advertisers to curate a more personalized and intimate experience that tumblr users would love.
Why not just advertise elsewhere? Tumblr still in fact gets over 300 million views a month as of June 2021 (Statosta), and the added benefit for users to be able to like, share, and interact with ads would allow ads that the community enjoys to be talked about more. Giving advertisers more honest feedback about their ads while increasing their SEO’s.
Also small businesses that can't compete with the vetting processes that are used on other sites, would have a better chance of developing their business and increasing their clientele on tumblr whose core demographics are approximately 60% millennial and 35% gen-z. This core demographic does in fact care about being able to shop at local stores, or even a store across the US that is trying to drum up its own online sales.
These ads could be placed inline on the tumblr dash while moving other sponsored ads to the right of the site on desktop, but making them alternate on mobile between user ads and sponsored ads.
Second, the display ads should be changed to allow tumblr users to share and further interact with ads to generate more user engagement, incentivizing more businesses and companies to build their brand status on tumblr. Tumblr has a good model for creating short diaries or daily vlogs for companies that wish to show off their products on social media. This includes smaller businesses and vlogers that want to post videos or tutorials of themselves on their blog.
Tumblr is a good site for user engagement with a pool of creative potential for anyone wanting to gauge the desire for a particular subject or piece of media, maybe even an upcoming show. Having the ability to share and comment on sponsored ads would also help advertisers by allowing them to get more bang for their buck with a considerable uptick on how users engage with that content.
Third, tumblrs sponsor day ads and banner ads are inexpensive and should be highlighted as a selling point over their competitors. Tumblr 24-hour banner ads are considerably more affordable for businesses when compared to places like twitter with their 200k price point. For the same amount of money on tumblr a business could have their company at the top of the dashboard or app for 8 whole days. Much longer and much better than the competition.
Keeping this price fixed, with a change in the price CPC is still a much more lucrative and attractive selling point than any of the competition on the internet today. I know this might not be exactly what tumblr wants to hear when it is hemorrhaging money right now, but let's look at the cost for these 24 hour daily ads and banner ads. If tumblr hypes up the price point on these ads they could see a significant rise in advertisers considering the lack of competition on tumblr and past success stories of companies who did advertise on tumblr.
At the same time larger advertisers should be encouraged to make engaging ads and blogs on tumblr that will make people want to actually go to their blogs, that then link to an external site or page. Not ads that instantly try to force you to go to some other site, by rewarding or offering special discounts for people who find a special code or something off of the actual blog. Or even for giving the same code to everyone who reblogs a certain post made by the advertiser.
Seems too good to be true? Look at “Asos” back in 2015 when they held a shirt design competition on their tumblr blog. Where they had 900 submissions, four of which were picked, and were sold out of the user generated shirts in 10 hours.
This is not the only case however, but FX ran their own campaign for the show “Man Seeking Woman” where they saw a 2.8% increase in user engagement, 86% increase in their tumblr followers, and they actually saved money through advertising on tumblr.
All this leads me to believe that tumblr actually was and continues to be the best place for brands, small businesses, and artists to develop themselves through genuine user engagement.
Finally, the “premium themes” that are available on tumblr that allow for unparalleled customizations that you hardly find elsewhere on the internet anymore. Tumblrs ability to take a variety of media sources, as well as having an unparalleled level of customization, user interconnectivity, and a vibrant artistic scene shows that it is ripe with potential.
Tumblr could still use its post+ feature, but in the same way that Discord uses its subscription service. For cosmetic changes that can be added modularly to the site or individual blogs for an additional monthly fee. In conjunction with partnering with community artists to bring small cosmetic additions to individual blogs, while paying the content creator and tumblr taking a small portion of the profits over a certain amount.
To be completely honest this is probably the hardest portion of this entire pitch to make changes to in a shorter period of time, considering all the testing and “under the hood” changes that must be made. However, I think that implementing this as well as the other changes I have proposed will bring back more foot traffic to tumblr as well as increase its revenue and profitability.
In closing, I am simply working with whatever information I was able to find online and a good amount of time invested on my part to do this. I think tumblr has a ton of potential still to return as a force for good for the communities that exist and want a change from what the internet has become. Time and time again when any company or public entity dies it was because it did not change and refused to adapt and innovate, oftentimes not at the hands of the people working everyday to keep the site running. Instead at the hands of people who dont see the value in what has fallen in their laps.
If you agree and think this is something that can be done, please reblog this post and follow me for more updates. If I don't hear back or this does not gain any traction by the end of the year, then tumblr can go to its inevitable end. I will be here sinking with the ship.

NM3205 blog 7 - WeChat (media consumption)
In Zhang’s WeChat: Social Network and Smart City. International Linguistics Research (2019), his research revolved around WeChat and its digital activity for its advanced functionalities which build intelligent society in China. China’s ban of external influences of Western social network instigated the revolution of WeChat, from an instant messaging application to a hybrid including application, marketplace, payment method and operating system as an integrated means rather than just a social network. The new usage and the rapid expansion of its integrated functionality and impacts form the new communication consumption framework in China. This work shows how an intelligent society changes and develops through a social network, and detailed analysis of advanced technology and social networks of WeChat. Without a doubt, the boundaries between virtual social networks gradually dissolve, making WeChat a social and economic phenomenon. In this blog, i will also analyse how China had curated WeChat to suit their tastes and preferences in consumption of the internet.
Then, Zhang mentioned that “WeChat is the application of all applications.” and that in the Western world, there is almost no network that can be comparable to WeChat. Indeed, to a certain extent, I do believe this statement is accurate. In Singapore, we are generally influenced by Western factors, hence, our main mode of messaging is usually Telegram or WhatsApp. I realised i communicate mostly through Whatsapp but their functionalities are quite limited compared to WeChat. Evidently, I use GooglePay/PayNow for monetary transactions, WhatsApp for communication and Instagram for social media. There have been attempts by WhatsApp to include the Instastory function, for instance, taking pictures to update your status on WhatsApp but it is not a popular function, because in contrast to Instagram which has tons of amazing filters, WhatsApp status update seems boring and useless. In WeChat, it is a holistic platform whereby you can update people about your life, a recall platform to unsend unintended messages, passport visa application, make payments through Redpackets, “WeChat Purse” in Wechat Pay as an official access to the social insurance payment and other events like checking the balance of the public housing welfare fund. And last but the least, “WeChat Wallet” facilitates payment with the wallet for users to pay for goods and services which is so convenient compared to using multiple applications for different purposes. The only downside about this app is that it is monitored heavily by the China Government, and the data is readily accessible to them which makes it extremely dangerous, and possible infringement of citizens’ privacy. I asked one of my friends who is currently studying in China about her opinions on WeChat, she mentioned that it is definitely one “super” app that assists in daily activities and making connections since she was a foreigner in China which helped her better assimilate into the country. However, she also gets the paranoia of constantly being watched. Even though her account is private, she was shocked that when she was applying for Visa, the interview questions were very similar to certain personal topics that she shared with her friends via WeChat only (eg. stereotypes of China people). Despite fearing for her privacy rights, she said she is unable to live without “WeChat” because of how integrated the apps are into China social network.
Besides that, from my analysis of WeChat, the curation of the network to suit China’s consumers tastes and preferences are ostensible reiterating the ecology between the app and its citizens. Thereby, increasing its appeal and media consumption. Firstly, WeChat is a personal and professional network. Wechat is used for connection with friends, family and colleagues. This is because the Chinese prefer to approach things holistically and systemically, so they do not mind blurring the demarcation between work and leisure. In contrast, the West prefers to distinguish personal from professional, as clearly seen that Facebook and Instagram fall into the personal category as compared to Linkedin. This is reflective of the way Westerners think and work. They do so in a partial way by analysing systems separately, with rationality and clear boundaries as the basis for working well together.
Secondly, WeChat has no online status or read receipts. When it does come to making new connections, the Chinese are relatively more aloof and self contained. This is because collectivism and group harmony are preferred. With foreign connections, the Chinese prefer not share their personal opinions and feelings, but rather confide in their own trust circle. WeChat supports this social norm of refrain by protecting users’ privacy—not indicating of users’ online status or receipt of having read the messages. Another important cultural trait is the norm of saving one’s face or not losing face. If the read receipt is shown and one does not reply, it is highly embarrassing and one risks ruining the relationship. In contrast, Western culture is largely individualistic and control-oriented. Westerners are much more social from the outset of meeting new people. Social networking and messaging platforms on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp automatically provide the online status and read receipts function to facilitate and optimise conversations. The mentality of Westerners is much more focused on transparency and productivity. Any abrasions or offences in social interactions are seen as minor and quickly brushed away. As such, they do not mind being explicit and direct, with no need to hide, on social network platforms.
Lastly, WeChat is a closed network and does not suggest new connections. WeChat only shows interactions in one’s social network and among mutual connections. WeChat also does not have the function of suggesting new connections. This is because the Chinese often make a greater investment in deepening relationships within their social circles. They highly value intimacy and good relationships, no matter personal and/or professional. As such, the Chinese want to keep their connections private and would not naturally bring connections of different social circles together. They also prefer to expand their social network organically via personal introductions rather than reaching out to strangers. On the other hand, Western social network platforms operate with different logic because Western culture is more about openly interacting and sharing. Greater emphasis is placed on the extensiveness of one’s social network and receiving support and recognition from the relevant social circles. The Western approach to networking involves fewer moral obligations and emotional ties. As such, making new connections can be reduced to the click of a button. On my Linkedin, multiple connections pop up everyday, even international contacts. Hence, you could clearly see how Linkedin’s algorithm promotes interconnectivity regardless of backgrounds, location or race.
In a nutshell, the innovation of the social platform WeChat has helped to improve the information technology and services of the city thanks to the advantages of large data bases, artificial intelligence. It has propelled China towards a smart nation by streamlining all the various processes into a single network which improves the quality of life. Moreover, the curation of the app towards the consumers tastes and preference encourages them to indulge in media consumption. Thus, accentuating the fact that the internet is so deeply interwoven into our lives that we are unable to live without it.

Let’s Discuss: Extrinsic vs. Intrinsic Motivation
Ever since my Emotion and Motivation course, I wanted to write a post about extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. I’ve discussed motivation before HERE; however, I haven’t touched the subject in more detail, nor shared how I motivate myself.
In psychology, we divide motivation into two types: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic motivation is an environmentally curated reason (e.g. incentives or consequences) to engage in an action or activity. It’s a “Do this in order to get to this” or “What is in it for me?” type of motivation. Some of the most common needs (external factors) that lead a person to do certain things are:
Money
Praise
Competition
Threat of a punishment
Grades, class rankings, GPA
Extrinsic motives lead to individual benefits. These motivations can lead to behavior, which would have never been possible otherwise. For example, a student might never feel the intrinsic motivation to study, but external factors like medals or the need to improve one’s GPA might motivate the student to study harder.
Intrinsic motivation is the inherent desire to engage one’s interests and to exercise and develop one’s capacities. It emerges from a person’s psychological needs, curiosities and strivings for growth. It’s a “I am doing this because it is...” type of motivation. There is neither pressure nor any sort of reward for your actions, but you still do them because you want to or you believe it’s the right thing to do. The needs or causes that lead to intrinsic motivation are:
Autonomy: the need to have complete control over one’s own life.
Relatedness: the need to maintain companionship or connection with others.
Competence: the need to do be the best and/or succeed.
This form of motivation is not only long-lasting but also self-sustaining. For example, a student with intrinsic motivation focuses more on the subject rather than punishments or rewards and this helps them to learn better. The benefits of intrinsic motivation are
Engagement: the higher a person’s intrinsic motivation, the greater her engagement will be in that task.
Creativity: if people experience interest, enjoyment, satisfaction and challenge of the work itself then their creativity is higher.
Conceptual understanding/high-quality learning: flexible thinking, active information processing and learning in a conceptual way.
Optimal functioning and well-being: greater self-actualization, greater subject vitality, less anxiety and depression, greater self-esteem.
Now that you have a better understanding of the two types of motivation I can share some of my personal thoughts on this topic. Sadly, most of our educational systems are based solely on extrinsic motivation. At school it often felt like I was studying for a specific grade/or GPA and not because I was interested in the subject matter (for example, economy...). Therefore, I believe it to be one of the main reasons why students struggle with studying at school and why they lack motivation to learn new things.
Personally, when I started studying at university, I was finally learning about what I was interested in. Yes, I had to take courses that I didn’t enjoy (*cough* organisational psychology *cough*); however, I tried to shift my attitude and think about at least one new thing I could learn from the subject that I didn’t know before. It helped me to find some value in courses that I thought were wasting my time + money.
I continue to learn and grow and find new interests as I go along the way. Motivation is a difficult subject to write about because I figured out what I liked to learn/do by learning what I don’t like to learn/do first. I also believe that if you choose subjects to study because of felt pressure from parents/teachers/friends/society, you will not enjoy yourself... Ask yourself if doing a particular subject because you think it is prestigious or will secure you a place at a university/a job afterwards is worth the pain and suffering you will feel when you will have to study it for the next 3-4 years... If the answer is no (which I hope it is) don’t worry because you still have time to figure things out! Your interests may also change and that’s good! It means you’re learning and growing! And that’s all I expect from you!😌

Long Term Acid Plans
So it seems some people interpreted the blog posts I made while I was on acid - when I was trying to immediately get down some novel information while being bad at communication - more seriously than I intended. So I should specify what has happened so far and what I plan to do:
All doses I took until last week were below the threshold for actually psychadelic effects. I just took moderate doses where the main effect is stimulating learning and improving creative thinking.
(Dose zero was a test I did about two months ago of an extremely tiny amount so I could be sure I wouldn’t have an unusual adverse reaction to it. Even then I had benzos on hand to bring me down. It mostly just made me slightly loopy and made everything around me nicer.)
The first time I did a large enough dose to noticably impact thinking was the afternoon after my abuser had kind of pushed me to a ‘last straw’ sort of moment, but I didn’t have the confidence to actually upend my life to escape. Then I had a change of perspective, realised how stupid I’d been being for months, and entirely noped out of that bullshit. Since then I’ve been living somewhat precariously (until now, when I’m actually decently stable and safe), but I’m vastly happier, and I think that indicates that I made the right choice. Had I not made that choice, I wouldn’t have a life worth living today, and I have little confidence I’d have had one later either.
The second time I took acid I ended up having conversations with some friends and acquaintances that helped me realise the shape of the holes in my social presentation style. And, as such, why I was so bad at enforcing my boundaries (or having them in the first place). I also was able to make plans with some helpful people that will probably make it easier for me to unfuck my life in the long term.
The third time I took acid was in an actually controlled environment, at which point I took a full dose with psychadelic effects. This was the experience during which I tagged @aellagirl because I wanted to know more about fixing the effects in place. During this trip, I realised the extent to which being around other human beings causes their mental states to bleed into mine just in general, which allowed me to recognise the value of introvert time. I also learned to actually directly value maintaining my boundaries, which is admittedly not the stereotypical acid outcome, and expect to be a lot better at enforcing boundaries in the future.
I also ended up experiencing pain as pleasure, because I started interpreting all intense experience as euphoria. I was very good at sinking into specific experiences if I chose to, except that if my trip partner was in the room I would necessarily devote at least part of my mind to simulating theirs, which prevented total immersion (except that I could still do total-immersion in empathy). Furthermore, I saw entire worlds composed of beautiful shifting geometric patterns. I’m not under any illusions that this world exists, but it was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen and I’d love to make art of it at some point.
But taking a full dose led me to be more confident of some of the things I’d noticed at lower doses but assumed would stop being true of me at higher doses. For one thing, I was entirely lucid and had no trouble switching between short/medium/long term planning. I was directly enjoying and paying attention to each experience, but also curating the music for my trip partner and I and thinking of songs to switch to based on apparent fluctuations in my partner’s mood. Plus I never lost track of what my post-trip plans were.
The other thing was maintaining enough internal emotional control to make bad trips in general exceedingly unlikely. Generally, any time I might be tempted to feel anxious, I just notice that getting anxious would be dumb and... Don’t do that. This is also what I do when I’m sober, which is why I didn’t see a lot of risk to taking pre-psychadelic doses of acid. I’m just more confident that my sober mental skills transfer to (at least one tab of) acid than I was before. The only time I got anxious throughout the whole trip was when I purposefully induced anxiety so I could enjoy it masochistically, and it ended the moment it was no longer the thing I wanted to explore.
I also had no trouble managing the emotions of my trip partner throughout (which I later realised might be its own issue) and, when she went nonverbal near the end, I started liveblogging aloud her thoughts and emotional state since it felt unfair that she could no longer do this for herself. (I was mostly right throughout this, which I could confirm because she reinforcement-learning!trained me by nodding and shaking her head.)
Having now experienced acid three times, with the most recent one having major (and mostly positive) effects, I want to figure out how to fix some of these effects in place. And my first step is... Not taking acid. In fact, I plan to avoid intoxicants in general for about a month.
My goal is to see how much of the temporary mental shifts due to acid I can fix in place into my sober life using just mindset-regulation. As is evidenced from the “Just don’t get anxious” thing, I’m reasonably good at altering mental states with just conscious attention. I’ve currently been working to keep the masochism on fulltime, which seems to be partially working. I’m hoping other aspects of sensory perception while tripping are also things I can bake in long term.
I think I’m unusually well poised to do this because, well, my baseline is actually unusually acid-like. I have near-unlimited patience in a lot of situations, like waiting for the train, because I have little difficulty immersing myself in my current sensory environment and appreciating each tiny fluctuation. I have a generally rose-tinted perception of, well, everything, because I mentally filter my attention to focus on the good over the bad, and to feel the good components of any experience more strongly than the bad ones. By default, I have whatever the reverse of depression is. Plus I have enough conscious control over this that I can hear the same piece of music five different ways sequentially just by adjusting my filter of what components of the piece are most salient. (It’s really fun to point out different elements of a piece to someone in real time and have their face light up as they notice it and their experience shifts :D)
I’m already a universal love kind of person and find it easy to fall into other people’s experiences through empathy. Plus, given time to zone out and self-focus, I can drastically alter my mental state at will using meditation-adjacent things I developed for myself. Oh, and since I was 12 I’ve been able to move sensations of heat around through my body basically at will in ways that have led the more woo-y people around me to declare that I’m close to “Awakening” while I rolled my eyes.
It’s worth noting that, despite having always been a human composed entirely of ecstasy and acid, I’ve never really fallen into mysticism because of this. I’m just not easy to convince of wishy-washy stuff, even if the wishy-washy stuff attempts to flatter my biases. Especially if the wishy-washy stuff flatters my biases. Oh, so my weird successes with meditation prove that I’m more awakened than other people? What reason do I have outside of my ego to possibly believe that?
See also: Me not thinking my acid visions depict a real place, and the fact that at no point on my trip did I lose the feeling that there was an important sense in which my trip partner and I were distinct people. (She lost that sense, though. Admittedly, I sort of trolled her by mimicking her motions and body language at times to increase this effect, because I’m a terrible person.)
However, at the same time, I’m certainly not convinced enough of my own uniqueness not to think I could possibly experience ego death, loss of lucidity, and a sudden devotion to glowing racoons. But, well, those aren’t things I particularly want? I mean, maybe very temporary ego death, but temporary is the key. I want to use acid to steal techniques for improving my existence, but I don’t want to experience values drift on what my goals are or even whether to have goals.
This is part of why I’m trying to see how much progress I can make during a period of sobriety (which I’m having while in a much more comfortable/stable environment), and why I want to know what the effects of acid-drift are from @aellagirl in as much detail as possible. (Do you have notes or blog posts you were writing during the process, so I can do timeline analysis?)

Nature Manifesto
First, I want to start with how amazing the journey has been in this course. The assignments, the research, and the experience I had over the semester have been fun and worthwhile. This course has so far been self-inventing. Over the time, I have found what I like, what interests me, and it has also improved my writing skills along with paying attention to details. Along with that having all the assignments in one place under my own blog account has been very beneficial for me. As an example, for this assignment, I had to look over all of the posts I have written while doing the semester and find a theme that connects all my blogs. As I was looking at the blogs, it was mostly nature related or something that is a part of the nature. I instantly realized that my theme is going to be nature.
I have always been a nature lover. However, with work and study, it has been tough for me to take a break from my daily schedule to spend some time to appreciate nature. During each assignment in this Humanity class has helped me to bring out the inner artist in me who admires nature. Although not all my blogs have the same theme, but there are a few of them that has nature as a common theme. To start with, the first blog that reflects nature as a theme was the public art assignment where I chose to write about Scorpion in a blog. The Scorpion is a sculpture that has been donated to Baker’s Park near Downtown Naples. The purpose of choosing the Scorpion sculpture was to show the connection between nature and creatures that resides in it. The Scorpion itself represents the nature and because of that, we humans are able to interact with nature in some way. Second blog that made it easier for me to choose a theme for my manifesto assignment was the Module 8 assignment. In that assignment, I had to make a musical playlist consisting of at least songs from different genres based on a theme. For that particular assignment, I chose my theme to be Sea which also represents nature. All the songs had used sea in unique way, but no matter what the songs conveyed in terms of the meaning because at the end of the day it was the theme that made them a great musical playlist. The third assignment that made me finalize nature for my final manifesto assignment was the Photographer’s Eyes assignment. In this assignment, I actually dedicated my entire blog to nature. Each photo was related to nature. Whether to show the different shades of nature or different seasons of nature, the whole blog was staunched to nature. And finally, this assignment itself made me realize that how important nature is and all the writings I have done was nature centric.
There were times where I had no opportunity to write or choose nature as a blog’s topic. However, every time I had the opportunity to write about something of my own choice, nature was the first thing that would appear in my head. This is the final assignment that made me think how important nature is to me. I have learned a lot about arts and artists throughout the course. It is definitely true that I am not an artist, but all the readings and writings I have done over the time has helped me to become a curator of the arts. And I believe in the fact that, one who loves the nature is an artist herself/himself. I want to use all the knowledge I have gained in this class to further escalate my understanding of different forms of art. Even though, this is probably going to be the last blog I am going to publish on this account, but I want to use it as a constant reminder of how this class has assisted me to become a better writer and made me appreciate the love I bear for nature.

2020 hindsight
This has been my best cycling season yet. No longer working in London, I was able to get out on the road more often than I have in the past and I’ve enjoyed the certainties that cycling has offered in a world in which much seems in flux. I got a PB over 25 miles and equalled my PB over 10 miles but, possibly more importantly, I trained regularly for the first time since I started cycling, and the bike took on a new importance for me. It’s become a personal symbol for the worthiness of life’s ups and downs.
Cycling is a rich culture of endless possibilities – one that changes people’s lives. I first got a road bike (part-owned with my two brothers) eight years ago, around the time Bradley Wiggins was riding his way to a TUE-enhanced Tour de France victory. Since getting that bike in 2012, cycling has made me more practical (unless you’re willing to throw money around, learning basic bike mechanics is an essential part of long-term participation in the sport), it’s made me more humble (acknowledging that I’m emphatically mediocre at the sport), more scientific (beginning to get my head round drag coefficient and wattage), and cognisant that cycling is revolutionary. A recent Dutch documentary - Why We Cycle – makes grand claims for the role of the bike in Dutch society, including a claim that in the Netherlands (where bikes outnumber people), children are happier than any other nation in the world because of the liberty afforded by a bike-friendly infrastructure. Who knows? But it’s a credible claim that cycling affords children greater liberties and therefore contentment.
Coming from long distance running, cycling is a funny sport. There is a whole load of ego that seems to come with placing one’s arse on a bike saddle. Cyclists are often people who have come from other sports where they’ve not excelled. The training to performance output in cycling is high; by that I mean – train hard, invest mental energy in it, and the chances are you’ll improve significantly on the bike. The take-it-or-leave-it nature of competition in cycling means it’s a great place to curate a damaged ego. At an amateur level, I’m often amused by the scowling Strava entries of cyclists struggling with their natural lot (one recent TT appraisal from a former clubmate who was just outside his PB – ‘Dreadful. Must do better’, or the member of Reading CC who posts rides led by others with titles such as, ‘Tring and tedium’ or ‘terrible choice of route. Head wind all ride’). Does cycling have a unique claim on mature sports-based self-delusion? Additionally, the marginal role of cycling among professional sports means cultish, often unquestioning worship of its stars. Even successful cyclists nationally are often damp, uninspiring people, tending to fractured sense of selves (David Millar and Bradley Wiggins are obvious candidates). But the nature of having a marginalised (doping-scandalised) professional side to the sport, means where anomalies exist, they can be inspirational.
Among the pros, my all-time cycling hero is Nicole Cooke. She embodies much of what I love about the sport and reading her book – The Breakaway – taught me a lot and created a mould for how I wanted to go about cycling. Her connection of cycling with family. Her extraordinary and precocious attention to detail. Her zero tolerance of the cheats destroying the sport, as well as her obvious actions to distance herself from anyone doping-related. Her zero fucks given about offending male chauvinists. And her intelligence both in and outside of cycling. As a young teenager her level of professionalism was far in advance of the majority of male riders doing grand tours. Like many true outliers, she’s never really been embraced by her (now former) profession in the way that she deserves.
At an amateur level (albeit very much on the elite side of it) Tejvan Pettinger is the other beacon in my cycling life. Pettinger – a former national hill climbing champion who writes a painstakingly researched blog, Cycling Uphill – gives precious advice on how to train and how to keep your bike. Whenever I want a start point on something cycling-related (how to do interval training, the best rain jacket, 16mm fabric rim tape for the inside of my city-bike wheel) I look at Tejvan’s blog. He’s local to me (based in Oxford) and I enjoy the local community element to his writing; whilst I’ll never come close to what he’s achieved on the bike, I feel some spiritual kinship with him and his cherishing of the Corinthian ideal.
My understanding of this Corinthian ideal is that it celebrates sport as a means of a kind of self-fulfilment. But it’s also associated with a kind of wilful amateurism that is criticised by Clive Woodward as cause of delayed development in British sports at a professional level. When I celebrate Corinthian ideals, I’m certainly not endorsing the lazy, self-indulgent view of sports as something resting on natural, untrained talent - the view that Woodward criticises (see his book, Winning!). For me, the Corinthian spirit is kind of the inverse of what Woodward is criticising: it’s the pursuit of professional levels of training by those who are not paid to compete. With that dedication comes deep respect for others’ achievements. In a world where professional sport is basically an extension of corporatized entertainment, Corinthian values – or, at least, the amateur ideal – are pretty much the vessel for all that’s vibrant about sport. In pro cycling, even the appearance of a genuine hero like Tao Geoghan Hart is undermined by the large ugly grin of Dave Brailsford at his side. I’m more interested in watching the performances at a local level, where people with day jobs can turn up to local TTs and do over 30 miles an hour for 25 miles.
At time trials, road races, hill climbs, etc. you basically find the people who keep the sport alive. They might be watching, competing, writing about it, or organising it. The last of these gets the least respect but is also the most integral. Competition would simply not exist without organisation. The team at my club, Reading, organised about 2 months’ worth of weekly TTs during a pandemic. We used the same course – an intelligent practical step to minimise chaos but the organisation was impeccable. For the first week, payments were made with a contactless machine on the day but this quickly changed to pre-event payment online. A full recce of the course was put up on YouTube to show newcomers the way and we even got a video highlights package one week. I don’t think people appreciate how much these guys do. They basically make the amateur sport possible.
I’m not claiming that cycling is the greatest sport. I think it’s rather like being into poetry. The environment is not large, but the dedication is of a high level. Its denizens inspire or infuriate. What you see is hardly any of it. You stick with it till it breaks you, then stick with it till it fixes you.

19 Oct 2020: Keeping retail within the last mile. Second-hand Ikea. Remote work panopticon.
Hello, this is the Co-op Digital newsletter - it looks at what's happening in the internet/digital world and how it's relevant to the Co-op, to retail businesses, and most importantly to people, communities and society. Thank you for reading - send ideas and feedback to @rod on Twitter. Please tell a friend about it!
[Image: Photo by Priscilla Du Preez on Unsplash]
Keeping retail within the last mile
Subship is a “weekly drop of local goods. Delivered free to your door, every Thursday.” It’s South-east London only at the moment. You might think of it as a different take on Near.St, which wants to make all of local shop inventory searchable - Subship makes a curated list (local, ethical, independent etc) and delivers from it.
Elsewhere in delivered goods, a one-woman food-to-offices delivery service has reinvented itself as Pedalling Pantry, a plastic-free, fruit and veg delivery service.
Second-hand IKEA
With resale, Ikea is trying to find new ways to acquire customers - IKEA is testing out a new way to incentivise customers to come to its stores during the holiday season. It will host a Black Friday event called Buy Back in 27 countries, where it will encourage customers to bring in old furniture for Ikea to resell. “All products must be returned completely assembled” says the website, which might cause a few rueful chuckles.
Remote work panopticon
74% of ~1,000 companies plan on maintaining the increase in home working. And San Francisco hits highest office vacancy rate in nearly a decade as workers stay home.
Stripe will pay workers $20,000 to leave New York and San Francisco. But there’s a catch: the workers who take up the offer will have to take a 10% cut to their compensation. This might make sense if you’re only planning to stay employed at Stripe a short while. But if your share options are based on your salary though, it might make less sense.
Some employers don’t trust their people working from home. 'I monitor my staff with software that takes screenshots' and Corporate snitches are using screen monitoring to find and fire slackers. Maybe a second team could monitor whether the first team’s productivity monitoring is itself ruining productivity and trust.
“Omni-shopping”
“We’ve updated the Walmart signage on the exterior and interior of stores to reflect the Walmart app icon, creating an instant omni-shopping experience in the customer’s mind.” - Walmart’s deploying a new look in stores that emphasises their app, and adds self-checkout and contactless payments. One thing all retailers want the customer to think is “Omni-shopping”.
Platforms
A government service running well:
Been a busy few days for GOVUK Notify... With almost no notice, we helped the NHS send nearly 40 million emails and text messages to help in the fight against coronavirus.
If you ever needed a case study on the value of common platforms...
A government service running less well: that Test and Trace numbers thing with the Excel file. It shouldn’t have happened, and it’s not good using spreadsheets to move data around. (No disrespect intended to the spreadsheet gods, who will receive an offering so their dream-like grid continues to watch over us and admit all calculations.)
The underlying cause may have been some historic organisational make-do meeting a new public health need which suddenly turned every dial to eleven. From the outside it is hard to tell, and too easy to judge - we do know that many working on these services will be doing their utmost.
Disability
Plastic straws and cotton buds banned in England. Businesses can no longer sell or supply the single-use items as part of efforts to reduce pollution - this is great for the environment. Except that there are unintended consequences: it will disproportionately affect disabled people for whom single-use straws are the way they drink fluids :(
In thinking about how to create services or a world for inclusion, this is very simple but profound: ability is temporary. Or putting it another way:
I need access, accommodation and equity. These are not special needs. They are the needs of every human being.
Working conditions
“We’re building the first comprehensive data set about the quality of hourly work in the UK and helping workers use that information to make decisions about what work they want to do and for whom.” - How Breakroom uses data to make hourly work better for everyone.
Regulation
“Today, the rules come from Apple, or California, both of which are increasingly becoming America’s privacy regulators by default. But they will also come from the EU, which is increasingly writing laws that, intentionally or not, change how American companies do business in America, and the more different rules we have in different places, the more fragmented and complicated things get. Regulation is an export industry, and a competitive industry.”
Co-operation
“Cooperation Town is a new network of community-led food co-ops, providing free and affordable food” - it also helps you start your own co-operative.
Co-op Digital news and events
How dividing into smaller delivery teams has improved delivery.
Switching to a career in digital is the best decision I ever made.
Co-op is extending free school meals through half term at its 25 academies.
Free of charge events at Federation house (and elsewhere):
Allegory calling for participants to inform green economic recovery. tumblr
This summer I saw my favorite artist perform live on an island off of Manhattan that used to serve as a jail/mental health institution.
When Frank Ocean came out with his screen grabbed text file posted as a “photo” on Tumblr in 2012, I knew the platform was something special - the one niche he could safely post something so revealing and vulnerable and still not open himself to the direct hate-filled or homophobic comments of any other forum. I had signed up for Tumblr the year prior. I joined with the fantasy of becoming a famous food blogger (and later as a nail artist) so I could quit my publicity job and score all of the PR perks that I so readily dished out to any 'mommy' with a touch of digital pretense.
Personal space on the vast internet was never my craving. I resisted being too present, and enjoyed the ability to control how much I “put myself out there” on facebook, twitter, and later Instagram. With my original two tumblrs, like Frank, I could focus on sharing and following the things I cared the most about: in early cases, it was fan art of Bill Murray, gifs of Daft Punk, and mostly photos of food I had eaten from the everyday life of a new New Yorker discovering the cult nature of the restaurant scene (a similar practice to my behavior as a teen taking shitty photos at punk shows in St Pete, Florida to pin on my bedroom wall). Tumblr became my collection of “curated cool," and nobody cared how hard I was trying or what I put up there, except for me, and it became my favorite place on the internet. Eventually, I realized all of the writers I was admiring on The Awl were including their Tumblrs in their bios, and I was there to follow them. I saw Rebecca Black become a meme before her one-hit would become a wedding band wonder. If sitting at the open kitchen counter at an edison bulb-lit restaurant was the closest you could get to a food industry version of “backstage”, then a Tumblr dashboard filled with all of the blogging generation of the “fake news media” was the analogy. It’s human nature to want to be seen and understood. Selfies perform better than friendies on Instagram - and GPOY’s on Tumblr… well I challenge anybody on music.ly to define the acronym without that peeking at the Childish Gambino Genius page first.
And that’s the tip of the iceberg for where I stand with Tumblr now. After three years of hanging out in the same field, they invited me to meet them at the dugout. After four months of interviewing and pitching challenges and pretending like I was at a digital optimization workshop, I was offered a job. After five years, or nearly, I’m ready for another one. I had the BEST time and the BEST TEAM working at Tumblr. Sentiment is incalculable, and being the Comms professionals that we are, we can swear to the moon that the effect of press results on a brand is unquantifiable when one piece can qualitatively alter the nature of the public’s perception versus the reality of a goal. And I had the the immeasurable luxury to be surrounded by the smartest, most creative, intensely productive, and to borrow a food world phrase - hardiest colleagues in the history of the internet.
My first day at Tumblr also belonged to six others - together we endured a questionable onboarding interaction and then were sent with laptops and branded hoodies to our respective seats at our superdesks on various floors. There were dogs everywhere. I was told that I’d be introduced to the company on Friday and to submit two truths and a lie to help them get to know me. Here they are:
I have photo credits in the New York Times and New York Magazine
I appeared as a backup dancer in a rap video in high school
I watercolor paintings of crustaceans as a hobby
Leave your guess in the comments (oh wait, it’s Tumblr, you can’t).
Friday lunches were my lifeblood for a couple of months. Every week for at least seven thereafter unloaded a new set of amazing humans to be introduced in some absurd way by Sean from recruiting. I remember @sexpigeon vs Homer’s owner in game of pictionary, Johnny and Jake quickly competing for my heart as #1 engineer dudes, and of course, the instant classic game of Mark Coatney/ Marc Cote/ Marked Coat. Tumblr ramped up fast thanks to Lee, a fundraising series and at the tireless behest of my personal champion, Lindsey Dole.
Meanwhile, more magic was brewing in the cauldron. I heard @amandalynferri talking about some game she invented called Pretty Little Lasagna box, or I heard Maddie recalling the time she had her palm read in 14th street psychic's booth seeking refuge from a snowstorm, or @lexkap who sat on the other side of the building with a dog on her lap DM’d me on hip chat to show me her own nail art blog. Then a few of us won a chance to see a sneak preview of a new arthouse film by Harmony Korine and featuring an ensemble cast of former Disney talent that had been filmed in my hometown with a y2k airbrushed aesthetic - there was something innately emotional tied to each of us with this first viewing of Spring Breakers. When we left the midtown theater alongside the ATL Twins, I realized that this company had curated a community to match the intended behavior of its user base. We all connected on a level beyond any workplace I had experienced before.
And there was the professional side to the job - the work wins came quick because I was so lucky to sit under leaders who wanted the team to succeed. Rick Webb and Katherine encouraged me to dig in, and get deep with these shiny new toys called “evangelists” - Valentine, Nate, Liba, Annie, Max, Rachel, Jen, and briefly DCH. An enviable group of brilliant minds and creative energy who have all gone on to accomplish even more for their respective industries than a marketing budget at a start up could have enabled - and I had the pleasure to help share their Tumblr stories with the world - from a puppy bowl to annual southby's to groundbreaking art auctions to thirteen fucking fashion weeks to 35+ art and music shows (brrr)?
And then Tumblr got acquired and the Jenna Wortham turned the New York Times blue, and I got to do something I’m sure will never happen again in my entire career: I threw a party where the goody bag included a free tattoo, and multiple brave souls got them (Tyler, @bryanasortino, Megan & Johnny, among others).
And then Karen (aka #takingitallin aka @beautifulliving) joined, and me and Katherine gained a new teammate at the same time that I gained a new soul sister (and because of her self-described passion for advertising I never had to write an announcement about a new ad product ever again.) I’ve never been more challenged to succeed as I have over the three years I sat next to Karen - a generous and driven woman with endless dreams of supporting others (literally, ask her about the gap in the undergarment sector), who will always find a spot to squeeze me into a photobooth. Even at her wedding.
And lucky us, because then we invited @lilders into the #teamcomms fold and wow, wow, wow was life good. It was my honor working with Lily as she grew from FIT intern into somebody we should all aspire to work for someday.
Which leads to me to the poker faced improv master of all - Katherine. Allora @alittlespace! I am so lucky she believed that this girl who came into talk about a hypothetical strategy to get Eleven Madison Park on Tumblr and then pitched her a fantasy football launch party hosted by Nick Kroll and Mark Duplass could fit in and have the privilege to join the Tumblr Communications team. KB - I’ve already written you the dopiest thank you letter and shared my orchid growing miracle secrets - but it can’t be said enough - I am so grateful to have worked for you for all of these years. You are the best boss, and we will always be the #bestteam.
Because of Tumblr (and @david), I had the pleasure of working with so many additional incomparable people on projects outside of my designated Marketing Comms position, wearing more hats than we even produced for branded activation swag:
Designing and contenting for months with the relaunch of the precious Staff blog with David, Peter, Damien, Tag, Toph, among others
Setting the inaugural year in review with Danielle, Amanda, Christine loose (and then doing it again and again and again, with the wonderful team at DKC - especially that time we added a serving Kale to America’s breakfast.
Marathoning dozens of events with amazing producers like Julia, Suzanne and Magic - and encountering the native talent that thrives on Tumblr like Humans of New York, Chloe Wise, Sam Cannon, Johnny McLaughlin, Jillian Mercado, to a point where I can honestly say “I knew them when.”
Participating in the first ever Sales Offsite aka the greatest bar mitzvah ever thrown by Lee Brown, Dan Walsh and Sarah Won and the rest of the coolest sales team ever assembled (here’s to you @katemaxx, @jeffdtaylor, Meredith, Ari, Kira, and so many more)
Reaching back into my fashion bag of tricks and launching three different clothing lines.
Creating partnerships to show off super surprises at nerd parties at Comic Con and another breaking the internet for Art Basel
Interviewing the CEO of Shake Shack for the one-time-only live episode of “5 with a side of fries" in front of the whole company.
Urgently dealing with Legal, Ads, Trust and Safety on one of the definitive news story of a generation after nine months of back channeling and reporting.
DOING IT FOR THE CULTURE: Racing with the content and analytics teams for stats on the contentious day of #thedress, and then bling rings, witches, boneghazi, superwholockians, wholesome memes, studyblr, emojis, and of course, the toe thing! Thus redefining what it means to “go viral.”
Cleaned a ball pit for the dude from the 1975 to make a splash into them and trolled a legacy music publication
And wow - it took me this long to mention Post It Forward…I am so proud of everyone who helped make Tumblr the most empathetic community on the internet: Nicole Blumenfeld, Jeff D’Onofrio, @skiphursh “Dolphin", @dougrichard, Andy Sebela, Jess Frank, Sarah Won @swon, @pauwow, the brilliant and diligent Michelle Johnson. From building the blog, commissioning the art, recruiting and onboarding the partners, writing the endless number of give/gets, planning the sponsored posts and social content, running the day to day on the blog (and bequeathing that role to Lily), then doing it again with the Mental Health Quilt and IRL with the Post It Forward Summit - I’ve found my new track as a special projects person who can take on any issue, even suicidal teens. If this is my legacy, I’ve planted seeds in the garden I might never see. And special thanks to Victoria, who allowed me to speak at Obama’s White House about why kids need a place on the internet that can help heal - so long as they can find each other.
As it turns out, adults need that, too. From tailing Frank Ocean’s Ferrari to the most woke, mentally aware community and on to, thank god, a bonafide company to match - I will forever cherish my time at Tumblr and I’ll forever been asking #whenislunch. But from every tomorrow on, it will be somewhere else. And you can find me on the internet!
Here’s my LinkedIn, I’m looking.

A Step-by-Step Guide [+ Free Blog Post Templates]
You probably already know how integral the process of blogging is to the success of your marketing efforts. Which is why it goes without saying it’s exceptionally important to learn how to effectively start and manage a blog in a way that supports your business.
Without a blog, you’ll find yourself experiencing a number of problems such as poor search engine optimization (SEO), lack of promotional content for social, little clout with your leads and customers, and fewer pages to share your lead-generating calls-to-action (CTAs) on.
So why, oh why, do so many marketers I talk to still have a laundry list of excuses for why they can’t maintain a blog?
Maybe because, unless you enjoy writing, business blogging might seem uninteresting, time consuming, and difficult.
Well, the time for excuses is over and this guide is here to help you understand why. We’ll cover how to write and manage your business’s blog as well as provide helpful templates to simplify your blogging efforts.
Let’s get started with an important question.
What is a blog post?
Blog pots allow you and your business to publish insights, thoughts, and stories on your website about any topic. They can help you boost traffic, brand awareness, credibility, conversions, and revenue.
Today, people and organizations of all walks of life manage blogs to share analyses, instruction, criticisms, product information, industry findings, and more. There are many popular blog formats but, here are six of the most common:
The “How-To” Post
The List-Based Post
The “What Is” Post
The Pillar Page Post
The Newsjacking Post
The Infographic Post
Save time and download six blog templates for free.
So, how do you ensure your blog post catches the eyes of your target audience, buyer personas, and customers?
What makes a good blog post?
Before you write a blog, make sure you know the answers to questions like, “Why would someone keep reading this entire blog post?” and “What makes our audience come back for more?”
To start, a good blog post is interesting and educational. Blogs should answer questions and help readers resolve a challenge they’re experiencing — and you have to do so in an interesting way.
It’s not enough just to answer someone’s questions — you also have to provide actionable steps while being engaging. For instance, your introduction should hook the reader and make them want to continue reading your post. Then, use examples to keep your readers interested in what you have to say.
Remember, a good blog post is interesting to read and provides educational content to audience members.
(Want to learn how to apply blogging and other forms of content marketing to your business? Check out HubSpot Academy’s free content marketing training resource page.)
So, how do you actually go about writing one of these engaging and informational pieces?
How to Write a Blog Post
Here are the steps you’ll want to follow while writing a blog post.
1. Understand your audience.
Before you start writing your blog post, make sure you have a clear understanding of your target audience.
Ask questions like: What do they want to know about? And, what will resonate with them?
This is where creating your buyer personas comes in handy. Consider what you know about your buyer personas and their interests while you’re coming up with a topic for your blog post.
For instance, if your readers are millennials looking to start a business, you probably don’t need to provide them with information about getting started in social media — most of them already have that down.
You might, however, want to give them information about how to adjust their social media approach (for example — from what may be a casual, personal approach to a more business-savvy, networking-focused approach). That kind of tweak is what helps you publish content about the topics your audience really wants (and needs).
Don’t have buyer personas in place for your business? Here are a few resources to help you get started:
2. Create your blog domain.
Next, you’ll need a place to host this and every other blog post you write. This requires choosing a content management system (CMS) and a website domain hosting service.
Choose a CMS.
A CMS helps you create a website domain where you’ll actually publish your blog. CMS platforms can manage domains (where you create your website) and subdomains (where you create a webpage that connects to an existing website).
HubSpot customers host web content via CMS Hub. Another popular option is a self-hosted WordPress website on WP Engine. Whether you create a domain or a subdomain to start your blog, you’ll need to choose a web hosting service after you pick a CMS.
Register a domain or subdomain with a website host.
Your blog’s domain will look like this: www.yourblog.com. The name between the two periods is up to you, as long as this domain name doesn’t yet exist on the internet.
Want to create a subdomain for your blog? If you already own a cooking business at www.yourcompany.com, you might create a blog that looks like this: blog.yourcompany.com. In other words, your blog’s subdomain will live in its own section of yourcompany.com.
Some CMSs offer subdomains as a free service, where your blog lives on the CMS, rather than your business’s website. For example, it might look like this: yourblog.contentmanagementsystem.com. However, to create a subdomain that belongs to a company website, register the subdomain with a website host.
Most website hosting services charge very little to host an original domain — in fact, website costs can be as inexpensive as $3 per month.
Here are five popular web hosting services to choose from:
3. Customize your blog’s theme.
Once you have your domain name set up, customize the appearance of your blog to reflect the theme of the content you plan on creating and your brand.
For example, if you’re writing about sustainability and the environment, green might be a color to keep in mind while designing.
If you already manage a website and are writing the first post for that existing website, ensure the article is consistent with the website in appearance and subject matter. Two ways to do this are including your:
Logo: This can be your business’s name and/ or logo — it will remind blog readers of who’s publishing the content. (How heavily you want to brand your blog, however, is up to you.)
“About” Page: You might already have an “About” blurb describing yourself or your business. Your blog’s “About” section is an extension of this higher-level statement. Think of it as your blog’s mission statement, which serves to support your company’s goals.
4. Identify your first blog post’s topic.
Before you write anything, pick a topic for your blog post. The topic can be pretty general to start. For example, if you’re a company that sells a CRM for small-to-enterprise businesses, your post might be about the importance of using a single software to keep Marketing, Sales, and Service aligned.
Pro tip: You may not want to jump into a “how-to” article for your first blog post.
For instance, if you’re a plumber writing your first post, perhaps you’d write about modern faucet setups, or tell a particular success story you had rescuing a faucet before it flooded a customer’s house. Here are four other types of blog posts you could start with:
List (“Listicle”): 5 ways to fix a leaky faucet
Curated Collection: 10 faucet and sink brands to consider today
SlideShare Presentation: 5 types of faucets to replace your old one (with pictures)
News Piece: New study shows X% of people don’t replace their faucet frequently enough
If you’re having trouble coming up with topic ideas, check out this blog post by my colleague. In the post, she walks through a helpful process for turning one idea into many. Similar to the “leaky faucet” examples above, she suggests you “iterate off old topics to come up with unique and compelling new topics.”
This can be done by:
Changing the topic scope
Adjusting your time frame
Choosing a new audience
Taking a positive/negative approach
Introducing a new format
5. Come up with a working title.
You might come up with a few different working titles — in other words, iterations of approaching that topic to help you focus your writing.
For example, you may decide to narrow your topic to “Tools for Fixing Leaky Faucets” or “Common Causes of Leaky Faucets.” A working title is specific and will guide your post so you can start writing.
Let’s take a real post as an example: “How to Choose a Solid Topic for Your Next Blog Post.” Appropriate, right? The topic, in this case, was probably “blogging.” Then the working title may have been something like, “The Process for Selecting a Blog Post Topic.” And the final title ended up being “How to Choose a Solid Topic for Your Next Blog Post.”
See that evolution from topic, to working title, to final title? Even though the working title may not end up being the final title (more on that in a moment), it still provides enough information so you can focus your blog post on something more specific than a generic, overwhelming topic.
6. Write an intro (and make it captivating).
We’ve written more specifically about writing captivating introductions in the post, “How to Write an Introduction,” but let’s review, shall we?
First, grab the reader’s attention. If you lose the reader in the first few paragraphs — or even sentences — of the introduction, they’ll stop reading (even before they’ve given your post a fair shake). You can do this in a number of ways: tell a story or a joke, be empathetic, or grip the reader with an interesting fact or statistic.
Then, describe the purpose of your post and explain how it will address a problem the reader may be experiencing. This will give the reader a reason to continue reading and offer a connection to how it will help them improve their work/lives.
Here’s an example of a post we think does a good job of attracting a reader’s attention right away:
7. Organize your content in an outline.
Sometimes, blog posts can have an overwhelming amount of information — for the reader and the writer. The trick is to organize the info in a way so readers aren’t intimidated by length or amount of content. This organization can take multiple forms — sections, lists, tips — whatever’s most appropriate. But it must be organized!
Let’s take a look at the post, “How to Use Snapchat: A Detailed Look Into HubSpot’s Snapchat Strategy.” There’s a lot of content in the piece, so it’s broken up into a few sections using descriptive headers. The major sections are separated into sub-sections that go into more detail, making the content easier to read.
To complete this step, all you really need to do is outline your post. This way, before you start writing, you’ll know which points you want to cover and the best order to do so in. And to make things even easier, you can download and use our free blog post templates, which are pre-organized for six of the most common blogs. Just fill in the blanks!
8. Write your blog post!
The next step — but not the last — is actually writing the content. We can’t forget about that, of course.
Now that you have your outline/template, you’re ready to fill in the blanks. Use your outline as a guide and expand on all points as needed. Write about what you already know, and if necessary, conduct additional research to gather more information, examples, and data to back up your points, while providing proper attribution when incorporating external sources.
(Need help finding accurate and compelling data to use in your post? Check out this roundup of sources for inspiration.)
If you’re having trouble stringing sentences together, you’re not alone. Finding your “flow” can be challenging for a lot of folks. Luckily, there are a ton of tools you can lean on to help you improve your writing. Here are a few to get you started:
Power Thesaurus: Stuck on a word? Power Thesaurus is a crowdsourced tool that provides users with a number of alternative word choices from a community of writers.
ZenPen: If you’re having trouble staying focused, check out this distraction-free writing tool. ZenPen creates a minimalist “writing zone” designed to help you get words down without having to fuss with formatting right away.
Cliché Finder: Feeling like your writing might be coming off a little cheesy? Identify instances where you can be more specific using this handy cliché tool.
For a complete list of tools for improving your writing skills, check out this post. And if you’re looking for more direction, the following resources are chock-full of valuable writing advice:
9. Proofread and edit your post.
You’re not quite done yet, but you’re close! The editing process is an important part of blogging — don’t overlook it.
Ask a grammar-conscious co-worker to copyedit and proofread your post. You may also consider enlisting the help of The Ultimate Editing Checklist or using a free grammar checker like Grammarly.
If you’re looking to brush up on your self-editing skills, turn to these helpful posts for some tips and tricks to get you started:
When you’re ready to check your formatting, keep the blog elements in mind …
Featured Image
Choose a visually appealing and relevant image for your post. As social networks treat content with images more prominently, visuals are more responsible than ever for the success of your blog content.
In fact, it’s been shown that content with relevant images receives 94% more views than content without relevant images. For help selecting an image for your post, read “How to Select the Perfect Image for Your Next Blog Post” and pay close attention to the section about copyright law.
Visual Appearance
No one likes an unattractive blog post. And it’s not just pictures that make a post visually appealing — it’s the formatting and organization of the post, too.
In a well-formatted and visually-appealing blog post, you’ll notice that header and sub-headers are used to break up large blocks of text — and those headers are styled consistently.
Here’s an example of what that looks like:
Screenshots should always have a similar, defined border so they don’t appear as if they’re floating in space — that style should stay consistent from post to post.
Maintaining this consistency makes your content look more professional and easier on the eyes.
Topics and Tags
Tags are specific, public-facing keywords that describe a post. They also allow readers to browse for more content in the same category on your blog. Refrain from adding a laundry list of tags to each post. Instead, put some thought into a blog tagging strategy.
Think of tags as “topics” or “categories,” and choose 10-20 tags that represent all the main topics you want to cover on your blog. Then stick to those.
10. Insert a CTA.
At the end of every blog post, insert a CTA that indicates what you want the reader to do next — subscribe to your blog, download an ebook, register for a webinar or event, read a related article, etc.
Your visitors read your blog post, they click on the CTA, and eventually you generate a lead. But the CTA is also a valuable resource for the person reading your content — use your CTAs to offer more content similar to the subject of the post they just finished reading.
In the blog post, “What to Post on Instagram: 18 Photo & Video Ideas to Spark Inspiration,” for instance, readers are given actionable ideas for creating valuable Instagram content. At the end of the post is a CTA referring readers to download a comprehensive guide on how to use Instagram for business:
See how that’s a win-win for everyone? Readers who want to learn more have the opportunity to do so, and the business receives a lead they can nurture … who may even become a customer!
11. Optimize for on-page SEO.
After you finish writing, go back and search engine optimize your post.
Don’t obsess over how many keywords to include. If there are opportunities to incorporate keywords you’re targeting, and it won’t impact reader experience, do it. If you can make your URL shorter and more keyword-friendly, go for it. But don’t cram keywords or shoot for some arbitrary keyword density — Google’s smarter than that!
Here’s a little blog SEO reminder about what you should review and optimize:
Meta Description
Meta descriptions are the descriptions below the post’s page title on Google’s search results pages. They provide searchers with a short summary of the post before clicking into it. They are ideally between 150-160 characters and start with a verb, such as “Learn,” “Read,” or “Discover.”
While meta descriptions no longer factor into Google’s keyword ranking algorithm, they give searchers a snapshot of what they’ll get from reading the post and help improve your clickthrough rate from search.
Page Title and Headers
Most blogging software uses your post title as your page title, which is the most important on-page SEO element at your disposal. But if you’ve followed our formula so far, you should already have a working title that will naturally include keywords and/ or phrases your target audience is interested in.
Don’t over-complicate your title by trying to fit in keywords where they don’t naturally belong. With that said, if there are clear opportunities to add keywords you’re targeting to your post title and headers, feel free to take them. Also, try to keep your headlines short — ideally, under 65 characters — so they don’t get truncated in the search engine results.
Anchor Text
Anchor text is the word or words that link to another page — either on your website or on another website. Carefully select which keywords you want to link to other pages on your site because search engines take that into consideration when ranking your page for certain keywords.
It’s also important to consider which pages you link to. Consider linking pages that you want to rank for a specific keyword. You could end up getting it to rank on Google’s first page of results instead of its second page — and that ain’t small potatoes.
Mobile Optimization
With mobile devices accounting for nearly two-of-three minutes spent online, having a website with a responsive design is critical. In addition to making sure your website’s visitors (including your blog’s visitors) have the best experience possible, optimizing for mobile will score your website some SEO points.
To make sure your site is getting the maximum SEO benefit possible, check out this free guide: How to Make a Mobile-Friendly Website: SEO Tips for a Post-“Mobilegeddon” World.
12. Pick a catchy title.
Last but not least, it’s time to spruce up that working title of yours. Luckily, we have a simple formula for writing catchy titles that will grab the attention of your reader. Here’s what to consider:
Start with your working title.
As you start to edit your title, keep in mind that it’s important to keep the title accurate and clear.
Then, work on making your title sexy — whether it’s through strong language, alliteration, or another literary tactic.
If you can, optimize for SEO by sneaking some keywords in there (only if it’s natural, though!).
Finally, see if you can shorten it at all. No one likes a long, overwhelming title — remember, Google prefers 65 characters or fewer before it truncates it on its search engine results pages.
If you’ve mastered the steps above, learn about some ways to take your blog posts to the next level. Want some real examples of blog posts? See what your first blog post can look like, below, based on the topic you choose and the audience you’re targeting.
Blog Post Examples
List-Based Post

Guest Post
1. List-Based Blog Post
List-Based Post Example: 10 Fresh Ways to Get Better Results From Your Blog Posts
List-based posts are sometimes called “listicles,” a mix of the words “list” and “article.” These are articles that deliver information in the form of a list. A listicle uses sub-headers to break down the blog post into individual pieces, helping readers skim and digest your content more easily. According to ClearVoice, listicles are among the most shared types of content on social media across 14 industries.
As you can see in the example from our blog, above, listicles can offer various tips and methods for solving a problem.
2. Thought Leadership Post
Example: What I Wish I Had Known Before Writing My First Book
Thought leadership posts allow you to indulge in your expertise on a particular subject matter and share firsthand knowledge with your readers.
These pieces — which can be written in the first person, like the post by Joanna Penn, shown above — help you build trust with your audience so people take your blog seriously as you continue to write for it.
3. Curated Collection Post
Example: 8 Examples of Evolution in Action
Curated collections are a special type of listicle blog post. Rather than sharing tips or methods for doing something, this type of blog post shares a list of real examples that all have something in common in order to prove a larger point.
In the example post above, Listverse shares eight real examples of evolution in action among eight different animals — starting with the peppered moth.
4. Slideshare Presentation
Example: The HubSpot Culture Code
Slideshare is a presentation tool owned by the social network, LinkedIn, that helps publishers package a lot of information into easily shareable slides. Think of it like a PowerPoint, but for the web. With this in mind, Slideshare blog posts help you promote your Slideshare so that it can generate a steady stream of visitors.
Unlike blogs, Slideshare decks don’t often rank well on search engines, so they need a platform for getting their message out there to the people who are looking for it. By embedding and summarizing your Slideshare on a blog post, you can share a great deal of information and give it a chance to rank on Google at the same time.
Need some Slideshare ideas? In the example above, we turned our company’s “Culture Code” into a Slideshare presentation that anyone can look through and take lessons from, and then promoted it in a blog post.
5. Newsjacking Post
Example: Ivy Goes Mobile With New App for Designers
“Newsjacking” is a nickname for “hijacking” your blog to break important news related to your industry. Therefore, the newsjack post is a type of article whose sole purpose is to garner consumers’ attention and, while offering them timeless professional advice, also prove your blog to be a trusted resource for learning about the big things that happen in your industry.
The newsjack example above was published by Houzz, a home decor merchant and interior design resource, about a new mobile app that launched just for interior designers. Houzz didn’t launch the app, but the news of its launching is no less important to Houzz’s audience.
6. Infographic Post
Example: The Key Benefits of Studying Online [Infographic]
The infographic post serves a similar purpose as the Slideshare post — the fourth example, explained above — in that it conveys information for which plain blog copy might not be the best format.
For example, when you’re looking to share a lot of statistical information (without boring or confusing your readers), building this data into a well-designed, even fun-looking infographic can help keep your readers engaged with your content. It also helps readers remember the information long after they leave your website.
7. How-to Post
Example: How to Write a Blog Post: A Step-by-Step Guide
For this example, you need not look any further than the blog post you’re reading right now! How-to guides like this one help solve a problem for your readers. They’re like a cookbook for your industry, walking your audience through a project step by step to improve their literacy on the subject.
The more posts like this you create, the more equipped your readers will be to work with you and invest in the services you offer.
8. Guest Post
Example: Your Bookmarkable Guide to Social Media Image Sizes in 2020 [Infographic]
Guest posts are a type of blog post that you can use to include other voices on your blog. For example, if you want to get an outside expert’s opinion on a topic, a guest post is perfect for that.
Additionally, these posts give your blog variety in topic and viewpoint. If your customer has a problem you can’t solve, a guest post is a great way to solve that problem.
If you begin accepting guest posts, set up editorial guidelines to ensure they’re up to the same standards as your posts.
Ready to blog?
Blogging can help you build brand awareness, become a thought-leader and expert in your industry, attract qualified leads, and boost conversions. Follow the steps and tips we covered above to begin publishing and enhancing your blog today.

LA Bae
Ok, so Brazilian Bae may not have turned out to be the absolute love of my life but he was definitely a vast improvement on Interchangeable Bae. I seemed to be on a steady incline and, feeling rather bolstered from the experience, decided that my plan to venture into the more international waters of the dating pool was worth sticking with. Enter Brody. I matched with Brody on Bumble. His profile told me he was from LA and an Art Director in Television. The smouldering looks and wide brimmed hats in his pictures, combined with the fact that his bio also stated his year 5 teacher would describe him as “filled to the brim with rebellion”, suggested that he was going to fit every stereotype I could mentally concoct of someone from LA. I swiped right. It was a match.
The cyber small talk commenced and things got better and better from the word go. Not only was Brody from LA and working in television, he was currently travelling around Europe working as a videographer and a tour manager from an American band called Twin Peaks. London was the last stop of their tour and he had decided to stay on for three days to explore the city before heading home. Now, my rule so far with The Dater Analyst has been to go into every date with an open mind and the hope that the person I am about to meet could be the love of my life. The fact that Brody was only in the UK for three days strongly suggested that even if this was the case, geographically, a blossoming romance was going to be challenging. Come on though, a Californian videographer on a European tour with a band - that shit’s got perfect blog fodder written ALL over it, it was too good an opportunity to miss.
The cyber small talk continued and I asked what he was doing with his time off in London. A photo pinged back to me. I have never received a photo on Bumble before, how modern! Well, technically, I didn’t immediately see the photo. The Bumblebees clearly aren’t naive to the genre of pictures one might find on a dating app so you actually get a blurred out square with directions to “tap to view image”. An attempt to avoid being blindsided by a big willy. I had only just matched with this man though, how did I know that that wasn’t what I was going to get. Tentatively, I tapped to view the image with one hand whilst using the other to shield my innocent eyes. I peaked through splayed fingers and what greeted me was so much more entertaining than a dick pic. It was a carefully staged cafe scene - a scrubbed wood table, a bunch of flowers and a cup of coffee next to an open window overlooking a quaint London street. It gets better. Front and centre of the photo was a watercolour painting of the scene and a box of paints. Brody was proud enough of his artistic endeavours to not only admit to the fact he was spending his day painting (which, let’s be honest, sounds a bit wanky) but to actually send a picture so I could see his skills for myself. How very LA!
Right, I thought, two can play at that game. I happened to be working from home that day so I curated my own still life. I moved a vase of lilies to my own scrubbed wood table, in front of a gilded mirror and placed a lit candle, open laptop and notebook in the foreground. Even sexier than a tasteful nude, some might argue. I sent it off and told him I was just doing a bit of writing. “What are you writing?” came the response...
Rule two of The Dater Analyst is that I never tell the datees about the blog. In this instance though, I was willing to bet money on the fact that Brody’s ego was a big enough that he would see a dating blog as a challenge rather than a deterrent so I told him the truth. Within two minutes I had a response: “A dating blog! Can I steal you away for a date night? You can write about it. What if we meet for just two hours and you write while I paint. We don’t even have to talk.” Boom! Hook, line and sinker!
I actually had plans that night so sadly the artistic date did not take place. I was free the following afternoon though so we agreed to meet then in a microbrewery in Coal Drops Yard, obvs! I’m about to break a third rule of The Dater Analyst here. I never normally divulge the contents of the cyber small talk but I feel it would be beneficial here in order to give a more rounded impression of the character we are dealing with. The reason I couldn’t make the original date was because I had Book Club. This got us on to the topic of literature and what Brody liked to read. I quote: “I do love Christopher Hitchens, it’s truly stimulating and chillingly current how he addresses the inevitable collapse of capitalism and things like the likelihood of Trump and Brexit but this is stuff he wrote in the 1990s...Huxley fucked me up. Have you read Doors of Perception? That book and its encouragement to experiment with hallucinogens changed my life for the better...I have done my share of experimenting and consciousness expanding but all that is only as valuable as your intention and your mentality”. You get the idea.
I arrived at the arranged microbrewery and there was absolutely no mistaking Brody. The paints were still with him but thankfully stored in his man bag. He also had a baker boy hat and a multi-coloured patterned scarf with a gold thread running through it which I’m sure had a deep meaning and was a gift from a Sharman on a yoga retreat in India but looked more like one of those ones you can buy for a fiver in Camden Market.
As his messages should have highlighted, Brody did not do small talk. We quickly covered both of our career ambitions, an extended American history leading up to the civil war, my neurological disorder and the fact that he could relate to this because his cat also had a neurological disorder. Surprisingly though, he wasn’t as wanky as I had expected. He actually came across as more self-assured than self-righteous. Conversations were two-way and he would quite often start saying something and then say “sorry, I interrupted you, carry on”. This sounds small but is amazingly rare, especially on dates.
Although it’s not something I have discussed a lot on this blog so far, I’m normally quite open about talking about the neurological disorder I was diagnosed with last year on dates (this is largely because it causes me to have shaking fits at random moments - I remain totally compos mentis through these but I kind of have to pre-warn people in case I suddenly start manically shaking with no advance warning). I don’t normally tell strangers though that one of the things I do to help manage it is Qi Gong, a movement based meditations which I do every morning. You can see why, it sounds hippy dippy, fairly out there and a difficult one to explain on a date whilst still sounding halfway normal. I thought it might be Brody’s cup of tea though. Indeed it was, he already knew all about Qi Gong. We had a long discussion about it and a specific type of yoga he used to practise which involved getting up at 4:30am and lots of chanting. It sounded suitably on brand and soul-searching for Brody. Then I realised though, that the way I judged him for his yoga routine was exactly how I was nervous that people judged me for my Qi Gong. Brody didn’t care or judge me though, he was comfortable with what he enjoyed doing, happy to talk about it and open-minded to different interests.
One beer down and I felt I hadn’t got all the details I could out of Brody so I agreed to show him a bit of London. We walked along Regent’s Canal, through Camden Lock and Camden Markets, past the zoo where you can see the warthogs and lions from the canal path, through Regent’s Park and up Primrose Hill for a sunset view of the city (I smashed it as a tour guide). I was right though; I had only seen the tip of the iceberg. Brody’s family life sounded suitably wacky. In brief: he had grown up on a ranch somewhere in the mid-west, which was sold when his parents, Steven and Angela, had split up. Steven currently holds a world record - he had a heart attack and was officially dead for fifty-two minutes whilst they did CPR. That is one of the longest times someone has been technically dead for and been resuscitated with no long-term physical or mental implications. Steven now lives on a houseboat with his new girlfriend. Pretty cool! Angela met her first boyfriend when he moved to America from Greece to avoid conscription. Their next-door neighbour reported him for selling weed though so he had to move back to Greece and Angela went with him, travelling around Greece for two years. It was all a pretty colourful past.
There were other parts of our date that were slightly more dubious. I’m all in favour of vegetarianism but wasn’t quite prepared for an in depth discussion on the perception of an animal’s soul. I swiftly moved the conversation along. I do which I had proved more on one of his more recent ventures though. He told me he was currently involved in the art direction of an all-male feminist magazine. The more I think about this, the more questions I have. I am under no doubt that men can be feminists but to make an exclusively male feminist magazine sounds slightly counter-intuitive to me? Surely this is just more men excluding women from a conversation that is about them, men mansplaining feminism to women? Maybe I got the wrong end of the stick but this seemed to be the patriarchy jumping on the zeitgeist to maintain their control? You never know though, maybe I’m being defensive; maybe this is going to be the next big thing. If you suddenly hear about a new and trendy male feminist publication do let me know, it could be Brody.
Eventually it began to get dark so the tour came to an end and I dropped Brody off at the nearest tube station and bid farewell before he flew back to LA the following day. I came away thinking that Brody really hadn’t been as narcissistic as I had expected. In many way, I had drunk the Californian Koolaid: as much eye-rolling as there was at the LA cliches Brody embodied, he also had that American confidence that made him totally comfortable in his own skin and with his own interests. He was unashamed in discussing his flaws and his strengths and skipping straight past the small talk to try and really get to know a person.
That would a sickeningly soul-searching end to the post though and absolutely not the light-hearted, scathing judgement that any of you read this blog for. If I’m being totally honest, what really happened was that I just enjoyed the opportunity to be as wanky as he was. For an afternoon I could happily discuss humanitarian politics, the benefits of meditation and what I felt fulfilment looked like rather than dissecting Love Island and complaining about commuting. It’s quite fun to be a knob every once in a while and I would happily spend a similar afternoon with Brody if he were to find himself back in the UK. If distance wasn’t an issue though, would Brody be The One? I think, realistically, probably not. I had had an engaging and enlightening afternoon but there weren’t exactly many lols. I think I’m looking for someone who can chat shit rather than chataranga. Or at least a bit of both.

Week in Ethereum news, annotated edition
Now that Gitcoin grants is over, this is a shill-free intro. Thanks to those who donated. Still have a bunch of thank you notes to send, and don’t have contact info for some.
I’ve been doing the annotated edition the day after, this one is 2 days after. Not sure what cadence I like. Perhaps it should be before?
Meanwhile I asked (on Twitter, naturally) whether I should create a separate Twitter account for Week in Ethereum News. The early vote was solidly yes, but overnight it became no.
Eth1
Latest core devs call. Tim’s notes: lots of ungas talk
Geth v1.9.10 – light client checkpoint oracle, higher propagated transaction cap, bug fixes
Multiaddr, ENR and enodes: network addresses explainer
The notes/call are an interesting read. They always are, but particularly this week if you think ungas and account versioning are interesting subjects.
Eth2
Latest what’s new in eth2
Latest Eth2 call. Notes from Mamy and Ben
Hsiao-Wei: Attestation aggregation in Eth2
Attestant: understanding the validator lifecycle
Runtime Verification formally verified the eth2 deposit contract
eth2stats
It’s been amusing to me how some parts of the investor community have gotten obsessed with the deposit contract. Given how many people have been holding their ETH from the sale, I imagine that hitting 7 figures will not be difficult, so I don’t understand the obsession with deploying the deposit contract. It’s not the limiting factor and never has been.
As I re-read Ben’s What’s New in Eth2, I realize that i’d like the annotated edition to be more like that. But it’s not.
Layer2
Fuel’s testnet is in open beta, fraud proofs under 1m gas. Using colored coins (!)
Miner challenges Arbitrum is dealing with
How Loopring aims to make its zk rollup transactions composable on layer1
Jordi Baylina’s Iden3 zk rollup slides
Layer2 has been hard so far. ETH and BTC’s original Raiden and Lightning channel networks have been slow to ship and failed to gain traction. Plasma has mostly fallen by the wayside, though there are teams finally putting Plasma variants into production that may produce interesting lessons.
It’s all rollup this week. In part because rollup seems to offer an easier environment for app devs, and with less of the problematic “but” problems that Plasma had. Channel networks are still coming (channels are already here), though I think it’s become clear to everyone that channel networks are quite complicated to get right.
It is a little amusing that Fuel is using colored UTXO coins, a la Bitcoin 2013.
Stuff for developers
Better Solidity debugging: console.log and stack traces
ABDK’s online tools: key of an address, calculate address pre-deploy, RLP encoder/decoder, encode/decode raw signed/unsigned transactions
Securify v2, free security scanner
Auditing your code with Web3j and its EVM
Sam Sun caught a vulnerability in Curve, which was solved by moving front end to a fixed version.
What are Burner Wallet Plugins? Customizing your popup event/economy
How to run your own xDai chain with arbitrary message bridge
web3connect v1beta.26 – a single web3 provider for all wallets
What does Truffle and WalletConnect mean?
a lightweight directory access protocol
Using CREATE2 explainer
Smart contracts on Austin Griffith’s eth.build
AirScript v0.6 and genSTARK v0.7 AirScript compiles to AirAssembly, which genSTARK uses to create a STARK
Lots of tools. Mostly self-explanatory - good open source projects spin off tools.
Every Solidity developer is excited about better debuggers. That’s been an issue for awhile.

I’ve said it before, but as soon as Status is a viable alternative, I’m planning to delete my other messengers. Messengers catch on because of “intolerant minorities” (to use Taleb’s phrase) who make others download a new messenger to communicate with them.

What to expect when summoning a MolochDAO
SignalDAO, a signalling DAO for Metacartel/MolochDAO using a Telegram bot doing web3 calls via Abridged SDK
Someone should write a history of DigixDAO. One of the first big 3 ETH token sales (Augur, Digix, Maker), it just never really happened. Probably some lessons in there about how early idealists gradually bump up against real world regulartions and with that much money at stake always choose the risk-averse path. Given how much DGX the founders hold, they’re going to get a nice payday. But who else remembers when the Digix founders were giving away 1 eth via a Reddit tip bot they created?

This was a microcosm of what is happening on Ethereum at the app layer: DeFi, games, payments, and tokenization, and some mismash therein.
I’m pretty excited about interest rate swaps. Hope someone builds it.

This first said “a guide for lazy Bitcoiners,” but taking that out was my last edit before pressing send. Magnanimity is a virtue.
Chris Dixon’s blog post is interesting to me because it’s nice to see people writing again for broader audiences. In cryptowinter, the hype completely died. The talent flowing into this space has slowed way down. This isn’t bad in and of itself - things happen in cycles, no big deal, and it was time to deliver on some of the hype. But with scalability solutions hitting, tooling much improved, and key management that is ready for mass adoption, it seems like the hype cycle is about to get started.

7 Unconventional Lead Generation Techniques for Brick and Mortar Businesses
The whole lead generation process for physical brick-and-mortar stores is not only tedious but also laborious if you’re relying on traditional methods.
Cold emails and cold calls by scraping through local address books just don’t cut it anymore.
But, what if you could still accomplish your lead generation goals using methods that add value to your prospects?
To walk you through some of the different methodologies, we’ve curated 7 unconventional lead generation techniques for local businesses.
1.Embed know-how videos
Video marketing is the future of the internet. Video content improves SEO, increases conversion rate, generates a direct sales lead and more.
Web users spend more time watching videos. This has proven to be highly beneficial for marketers and local businesses.
Videos are an effective lead generation tool. Consider using high-quality, informative content as gated content, adding videos on landing pages, and adding CTAs at the end of the video with a related offer can help to generate leads.
Consider platforms like YoutTube and Vimeo to get millions of views every single day. YouTube is the second most popular search engine as of today.
Users get on to YouTube to find potential answers to their questions. If a video is linked to the answers at the bottom that directs them to your website, that is a potential client in the pipeline.
Forbes predicts that 90% of customers say a video helps them make decisions to buy and 64% of customers say that watching a video makes them more likely to buy a product.
Add dynamic QR Codes at the end of the videos for the potential lead to scan and are directed to your website’s top landing pages or social media handle.
Beaconstac here, for example, leverages know-how videos to educate their users on how to create PDF QR Codes. Videos serve as a great interactive tool and simplify the process on the whole for users.
For more on using video for business, check out our guide on six types of video ideas to supercharge your social media.
2. Leverage app-less marketing
Deploy QR Codes and NFC Tags to generate leads to your local business and automate your marketing strategy.
QR Codes and NFC tags are cost-effective, work out-of-the-box, and is extremely efficient in generating leads.
This allows businesses to analyze, track and retarget their consumers by engaging with third-party applications exclusively meant for analyzing and retargeting by studying their click behavior.
Macy’s, the largest retail chain in the US has deployed beacon and NFC technology to strategize an engaging shopping experience for its users.
By opting for these technologies, Macy’s has amped the customer experience by rolling out loyalty programs, an enhanced customer service, segregating the layout merchandise in their stores, and offering personalized shopping experience.
Using QR Codes and NFC Tags on print marketing medium such as flyers, brochures, OOH advertisements, incentivized coupons and offers can be leveraged to promote the product, and, in turn, effectively increase leads.
McDonald’s used QR Codes on their paper packages after learning that their customers wanted to know more about their food by sharing nutritional information about their hamburgers.
This not only instilled a blanket of trust amongst the customers but also helped the company to highly target and retarget their customers to send out personalized messages and offers.
3. AMA (Ask Me Anything)
One of the most powerful and unique techniques to generate leads to your local business is by reaching out to pioneers in the market industry for their thoughts.
Take advantage of social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and even LinkedIn to post these Q&As. Send out a planned invite to your customers and followers notifying them about the Q&A session.
The questions could either be asked by an employee or you could even leverage consumers in this case with questions to ask the expert.
Awario states that companies who engage in social selling get 199% better ROI.
DataVLT, a data analytics platform ran an AMA session on Twitter by using the hashtag #AskDVLTAnything. By keeping their hashtag unique, the company was able to gather questions from different parts of the world and answered them during the session.
4. User-generated content
User-generated content and review platforms have a powerful foothold in organic search, making them an eminent opportunity to expand your brand name and get noticed by the right consumers.
When a business encourages its consumers to leave a review behind on a third-party platform with strong SEO, they are exponentially increasing the chances of being discovered by qualified prospects in search; without paying a penny.
FinancesOnline is an online B2B solutions finder service that works purely on customer reviews and ratings. The platform segregates companies based on the maximum quality content reviews and helps consumers find the solution they need.
Google acknowledges their independent role in helping consumers what they want and seems to approve review sites in search engine results.
Businesses can also outmaneuver their competitors in high-value keyword searchers. Considering the Google/CEB study found that 71% of B2B searchers start with a generic keyword phrase, this is crucial.
5. Answer questions on Quora
Quora is a Q&A based social networking site that reaches more than 100 million users per month. Quora can be taken advantage of to build yourself as a thought-leader in your particular niche.
Quora is primarily a user-generated content platform. But with that being said, there are ways to get the formula right on Quora. Quora is best used as a method to open up communication threads as you engage and help out users who are looking for a particular solution.
By answering questions related to my niche, and offbeat content, I can categorize myself as an expert on the subject matter garnering more attention to the company. This, in turn, will help the company get more users to at least click on the link, open a loop, and get them interested in the platform.
Quora doesn’t allow overly self-promoting content to generate leads and bring in revenue. The laws of reciprocity come into light and consumers will reach out to you after establishing yourself as a trusted source on the platform.
6. Offer free trials and giveaways
Giveaways, free trials, and sample products are the ideal method for getting potential users excited and letting them use your brand’s product to have an insight into it.
Free trials of a brand’s features can hels to capture potential consumer. If the trial helps them greatly, they are more likely to purchase the product and become a customer.
Sephora offers a plethora of free giveaways and trial products for their customers. In fact, Sephora is hugely popular for its giveaways, coupons, and discounts which get consumers flocking to their website and physical stores.
This lead generation process for Sephora has been hugely successful and has helped the company to retarget their potential customers to turn into qualified leads.
Touchless buying can also be employed for businesses that have an online presence.
In addition to that, consumers who have tried free samples are the most qualified leads because they have actually reached out to try your products.
By offering free trials and giveaways, a brand can do its own selling and encourage people to buy their products in a low-pressure manner.
7. Optimize email marketing
According to a report by DemandGen, lead-nurturing emails get as much as 10X the response rate as opposed to standalone mails.
Marketing automation is one of the biggest trends in email marketing at the moment, thus generating great results for businesses. Marketing automation tools are constructively hybrid email marketing tools that connect with your CRM that automatically pushes you to send highly personalized targeted emails to leads.
Email marketing plays a massive role in content marketing success. It plays the role of the concept of direct engagement. Some of the clues to develop a successful email content to generate leads must include -
Subject line
Concise content
Integrate social media handles in the mail
Include high-quality and lightweight images in the mail to explain the content better
Incorporate a CTA at the end of the mail
There are several tools that integrate email marketing to send out timely emails with highly engaging content such as Drip, Aweber, and Constant Contact to name a few.
Drip is an end-to-end email marketing platform that gives an incomparable insight into the customers’ behavior; right from their click behavior, emails they’ve opened, and purchases made to help build a brand from email to social media.
Most users open emails from businesses they want to connect with. This makes email marketing as one of the best tools for lead generation.
Experiment what’s best for your business
As a recap, the seven unconventional lead generation tactics are -
Embed know-how videos
Leverage app-less marketing
AMA (Ask Me Anything)
User-generated content
Answer questions on Quora
Offer free trials and giveaways
Optimize email marketing
A well-thought-out established process and subsequent focused strategy to generate leads can be wholesome and have the power to grow and sustain a business.
When it comes to businesses, the agenda “one size fits all” doesn’t hold good; what might work for a SaaS company might not work very well for a grocery shop.
Although lead generation is the numero uno challenge in this present day, identifying the bottlenecks in the funnel and tweaking strategies to take a technology-first approach always helps.

And that’s as a result of TrafficContentVid routinely monetizes these websites with presents from the likes of Amazon, which means… You might be getting PAID to BUILD your listing!
Right here’s a pleasant warning although…I used to be talking to Radu who advised me that this one-time payment is accessible for a restricted time solely. After which it's going to TRIPLE in value – and even then individuals will purchase it.
However I need you to test this out and seize entry now as there’s no level ready for one thing that will get you highly effective outcomes – proper?

These are the Best Types of Social Media To Use for An Online Business https://ift.tt/34MBvgk
With so many types of social media platforms out there it’s difficult to know which would be most beneficial.
Sure, we all know having an understanding of social media is important when starting an online business. But with so many kinds of social media, it can be hard to figure out exactly how many of them can be helpful.
We all know Facebook is great for connecting with customers and Instagram is the perfect place to show off products, but have you ever considered how Reddit could be useful for your business? Or even Yelp?
It may sound far-fetched, but stick with me because these slightly off-the-wall social media categories can be treasure troves of information that can help elevate your business.
So, which social media is best? We believe there are seven types of social media categories that are worth considering as an online business owner:
Social networking sites
Image sharing sites
Video sharing sites
Microblogs
Discussion forums
Blogs
Review sites
But before you can start using these types of social media to improve your business, first it’s crucial to have an understanding of what they are, who uses them, and how they can benefit you
Let’s get started.
1. Types of Social Media: Social Networking Sites
When you think about the types of social media, it’s generally social networking sites that spring to mind first. Social networking sites connect users to people and information of all varieties, and obviously, Facebook and LinkedIn are the big examples.
Why Do People Use Social Networking Sites?
Social networking sites make users feel as though the platform is oriented around them. They are the sun in the social media solar system and the sites work to connect them with what they want to see: posts from friends and family, news and lifestyle content, or updates from brands.
On social networking sites, the spread of information is highly encouraged through users interacting with content and sharing it in their circles. People can also create their content through posts, statuses, and albums and all types of media are welcome, including video, text, and image posts.
How Can I Use Social Networking Sites for My Online Business?
This is the ideal place to grow a community and brand. Creating a page for your business is a great way to reach potential customers, giving them a place to connect with others who like the same things they do while getting familiar with your brand.
With so much data on its users, social networking sites are also fantastic places to advertise your products. Using this data, you can target very specific audiences and figure out who’s the most interested in what you’re selling.
2. Types of Social Media: Image-Sharing Sites
The saying goes that a picture’s worth a thousand words and image-sharing sites have certainly ceased on that notion. Platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, and Imgur allow people to quickly access visual content they’ve curated from various sources.
Why Do People Use Image-Sharing Sites?
Being so simple to use but so visually pleasing, image-sharing sites easily capture people’s attention and imagination. These sites give users insights into the lives of their friends and people they admire, as well as showing off brands, companies, destinations, and events.
Many image-sharing sites having an endless scrolling feature, as well as filters that make it easy to find more content on topics that interest users, basically providing infinite new content.
How Can I Use Image-Sharing Sites for My Online Business?
These kinds of social media sites can be a great way to showcase your products – or get others to showcase them for you. Influencers are a major part of image-sharing sites and those with dedicated, engaged followings can be extremely helpful in driving customers to your business.
Image-sharing platforms can also be a great way to both see and show off your customers using your product after they’ve purchased it, providing great social proof. Creating a specific hashtag for customers to use is an easy way to encourage this and you could even display the posts directly on your website.
Image-sharing sites can also be used to engage with potential customers, posting content relevant to your business, as well as the lifestyle of your audience. If you have a large following, image-sharing sites can be the perfect place to test new products as users give quick, honest feedback.
3. Types of Social Media: Video-Sharing Sites
Video-sharing sites have exploded in recent years and become thriving communities with millions of engaged users. Launched in 2007, YouTube still dominates as the most well-known video-sharing site, but TikTok, Periscope, and Vimeo are other big players.
Why Do People Use Video-Sharing Sites?
Naturally, people primarily use video-sharing sites to be entertained. Heck, there are even different sites depending on how long you’d like to be entertained for. Under 60 seconds? Head to TikTok. Long form content more your style? YouTube is where you want to be.
People also use video-sharing sites to be informed and learn new skills. This has given rise to formats such as review, tutorial, and unboxing videos. Users of video-sharing sites actively seek out knowledge from those they deem trustworthy and authoritative on certain topics or products.
How Can I Use Video-Sharing Sites for My Online Business?
Filming a demonstration or review video is a fantastic way to show off your products. This works particularly well if you have a hard-to-photograph item, something that requires instructions to use, or a feature that you want to highlight.
Alternatively, engaging with video influencers can be a great option. This can work particularly well if an influencer is trusted and well-liked by your target audience, as you can capitalize on their social proof.
Video-sharing sites also offer you the chance to learn about your audience, as well as build a community and good reputation using the comment system. Comments on videos can reveal a lot, including any questions or concerns about your product that potential customers have.
4. Types of Social Media: Microblogs
Where do you go when you want to express an opinion or thought, but don’t want to spend hours crafting a long editorial or journal entry? Microblogs, of course! Websites like Twitter and Tumblr let users quickly fire off short posts and connect with wider communities.
Why Do People Use Microblogs?
Microblogs not only allow users to express their opinions and thoughts, but also become part of conversations with other users – or simply observe it.
For websites like Tumblr, users particularly enjoy the ability to share and bond with various communities, as well as the creativity of other members. Its community is artistic and often have niche interests, making the platform the perfect place to meet like-minded folk.
Twitter users make the most of being able to interact with brands and celebrities with ease, as well as sharing and spreading pictures and videos. The site is also useful for discovering breaking news, as it’s easy to filter and search for updates.
How Can I Use Microblogs for My Online Business?
Microblogs can be a good place to engage with customers and gain a deeper understanding of your target audience. Many brands use microblogs to offer support and give updates.
Being genuine and not coming across as stiff and corporate is important to microblog users. People are generally happy to engage with brands and companies, but also want to be entertained and informed.
By cultivating a feed that shares useful and entertaining content that isn’t just self-promotion, users will be more inclined to like, share and engage with your account. You can also team up with influencers to make the most of their following to promote your product.
5. Types of Social Media: Discussion Forums
Discussion forums are one of the OG forms of social media, originating from bulletin boards and used to talk about very specific topics. Home to over a million different communities, Reddit is the most well-known discussion forum, with Quora and Digg also very popular.
Why Do People Use Discussion Forums?
Discussion forums are extremely community-based with people seeking information and discussions around specific topics, questions and ideas. Forums often offer a degree of anonymity, with people identified by usernames rather than real names.
Users embrace discussion forums because they offer a sense of community and can be a source of knowledge that a user may not have been able to find in their offline life.
How Can I Use Discussion Forums for My Online Business?
Discussion forums are the ideal place to learn more about your target audience as they can be an absolute wealth of information. They’re a space where you can easily discover your potential customers’ pain points so you can be sure your product will adequately solve them.
One example of this is the image-hosting website Imgur. After Reddit user Alan Schaaf noticed problems with other image hosting sites, he created Imgur as an alternative that solved the issues users had with the other services. It was an instant success.
There’s also room to advertise on discussion forums, though it requires a level of finesse to appear organic. Posting in relevant subreddits in a subtle manner or answering applicable questions on Quora could be ways to promote your business. However, forum users are the types of social media users who will quickly sniff out self-promotion over genuine participation, so tread carefully.
6. Types of Social Media: Blogs
Although it might not seem like a type of social media site on first thought, a blog can definitely function as a form of social media, particularly if it covers queries the community has, has a strong following, or encourages discussion in its comment section (and on that note, feel free to leave your own comments in the section below). Spaces such as WordPress, Blogger, and Medium all fit into the blog category.
Why Do People Use Blogs?
Blogs let people learn more or be entertained on a particular topic. People choose to follow specific blogs because they enjoy the author’s writing style, connect with an author’s situation, or because they know they provide useful and insight information.
Blogs can be a great place to discover likeminded people and comment sections offer a chance to discuss and clarify related topics.
Unlike social networking sites or microblogs, when people read blogs they generally expect a longer, more in-depth piece of writing.
Blogs also offer the chance for a series of posts to be written on a single topic that can then be easily categorised so newcomers can find them with ease. This is something that can be difficult to do on other kinds of social media.
How Can I Use Blogs for My Online Business?
Blogs are a smart way to market your business, build your brand, and connect with your target audience at the same time.
You can construct posts explaining decisions, new products, special features, or upcoming events that you feel are important for your audience to know about. You can also post articles related to your product, things your audience enjoys, or would be interested in knowing more about – like the Oberlo blog.
In addition to this, well-optimized blog posts are a fantastic way to reach potential customers who otherwise may not have found your store. Writing insightful and useful SEO posts can set your business apart from similar ones as your website then becomes a destination people visit for a reason other than purchasing an item.
7. Types of Social Media: Review Sites
Used to recommend and educate users on products, services, and experiences, review sites are something that might not immediately jump to mind when considering different types of social media platforms. However, the undeniable social element to sites such as Yelp, TripAdvisor, and Foursquare ensure they fall into the social media category.
Why Do People Use Review Sites?
First and foremost, people use review sites to gain information so they can make well-informed choices about where the choose to spend their time and money.
Review sites make it easier to get details that are otherwise hard to know without experiencing something first hand. This can be great for those who want or need to be sure of particular options – vegetarian cuisine, accessibility, ability to pay with a credit card, and so forth.
Review sites often have a community aspect and users enjoy the feeling of contributing something useful to the wider group. Many review sites have features where community members can engage with submitted reviews, indicating their helpfulness or asking follow-up questions.
How Can I Use Review Sites for My Online Business?
Although review sites like TripAdvisor or Foursquare might not be the perfect fit for an online business, on-site user reviews can be extremely powerful.
Asking customers to review items they’ve purchased and displaying these reviews on your website is great social proof, which can help sway future customers. Obviously positive reviews are the ideal outcome from, but negative reviews can also be helpful in building a trusted brand, as they highlight issues that need to be addressed, make the review section look genuine, and let you know what you should fix with your store.
Conclusion
Feeling more informed, or perhaps even a little overwhelmed?
Don’t worry! This social media categories business is a lot to take in. The good news is that you don’t need to become an expert on everything straight away.
As you’ve just read, each of these seven types of social media can benefit your business, but if you’re more familiar with constructing Facebook ads than tackling an entire blog post, make it something you work up to over time.
Setting up a content and social media strategy could be a good step to ensure that you properly investigate all of your social media options in due course.
The most important thing is being aware that there are many different types of social media and understanding how they can all help your business in their own way.
