Chapter 11: The Shadow

Chapter summary: (Honestly this is more of a transitional chapter? Not a lot to say abt it)

“Ew… Is that, like, natural?” You feel like you have to ask, backing away from the monster and the pool of black blood beneath it. You shouldn’t have messed around with him in the first place, but you couldn’t resist wanting to look badass over the things corpse.

“No.” Sky hisses, brows furrowed in a frown, and you tilt your head at him curiously.

“When monsters have black blood like that, it means they’re empowered by the shadow.” Warriors explains, and you’re more or less following along until he brings up the shadow. What the heck is that?

“What’s the Shadow?” You ask, beginning to walk away from the monster. Your eyes catch on a ruby tipped staff, and you rush to pick it up, not wanting to risk losing Legend’s anchor in all of this chaos.

“The thing that killed us.” Wars grumbles, and you stumble, barely catching yourself before whipping around to give him a surprised look.

“What??” You practically screech, and the boys flinch back. The thing that killed them is still alive?!

“Technically no one killed it…” Wind trails off, giving the other heroes a look that seemed to say ‘it makes sense it’s still around’.

“Even if no one killed it, wouldn’t it have died of old age or something?” You suggest, and there are a few shifty gazes, everyone clearly uncomfortable with the topic. You can only assume that, no, whatever killed them was not capable of dying of old age.

Was it a god or something? You didn’t want to think of the ramifications of that thought.

“Look, I think we’ve all had enough fun for one day. Why don’t we head back home for now and we can talk about the Shadow some other time.” Warriors sighs, rubbing his forehead with his thumb, easing away the tension there. As much as you want to fight them and dig for more information, you have to agree that it isn’t the time or place to start questioning the ghostly heroes surrounding you. Glancing around, you notice a few of the people who were originally enjoying the ren faire and even a few store vendors are slowly trickling back in, curiously glancing around at the monster corpses littering the ground. The last thing you need right now is to be questioned about how so many monsters fell while you managed to get away with some minor cuts and bruises.

“This is gonna hurt like hell in the morning, isn’t it?” You grumble, rubbing your stomach lightly as a deep ache begins to build up there. A few of your friends mumble their sympathies while you begin making the trek back to your car.

“Wake up~ I think you’ll want to see this!” Wind giggles happily above your head and you groan, covering your face from the encroaching light trying to blind you, only to hiss as every muscle in your arm seizes in a cramp that sends you careening off your couch and onto the floor. Metal and wood clang on the floor around you, and you realize you passed out on the couch, still decked out in your friends’ anchors the night before.

“Wind? Why’re you waking me up so early?” You mumble, pinching your arm where the cramp hurts the worst until the blinding pain slowly ebbs away.

“Time is back! I thought you’d want to see him.” The kid grins, reaching out for you as if to pull you up, only for his hand to go through your body. He frowns for only a second before backing up, allowing you to stumble into a standing position and follow after him towards your office.

You’re still decked out in Warriors’ cape and Wild’s sheikah slate is pinned to your belt, but it looks like most of the other anchors got shaken off sometime while you were sleeping. Either way, you mumble some general greetings to the ghosts who eagerly await your entrance, all hovering around a sparkling blue ocarina perched upon a bookshelf. You suppose that’s Time’s anchor.

“Any warnings before I pick it up?” You ask, and Warriors glances off to the side.

“He’s… Well, he’s kind of beat up all around. The shadow really took his time with him. It’s hard to explain.” Warriors bites his lower lip, but you nod in understanding. Whatever might’ve happened to the Hero of Time, it must’ve been pretty bad, but you need to meet him regardless.

Picking up the ocarina, you turn around and meet the same man you saw in the woods all that time ago. It feels like it’s been months, even years since that day, but in reality, it’s been a short four days. Goddesses, what is your life coming to?

Time is covered in blood and mud, the substances smeared so much it's hard to tell where one liquid ends and the other begins. He still has all of his limbs, but they’re bent at odd angles, in a way that makes bile rise in your throat that you struggle to swallow down. Despite all of his injuries, though, he has an almost youthful look to him, and he smiles at you like you’re an old friend.

“There you are, old man.” You laugh, wiping some tears out of the corner of your eyes as you rush forward to wrap him in a hug. Of course, just as always, there’s no substance to it, but you can still feel a brush of warmth as Time wraps his arms around you in turn.

“Sorry I took so long. I guess that time slip took more out of me than I initially thought. ANd now I hear you’ve fought monsters and have even gained the ability to see the dead during my absence.” Time laughs, setting his hands on your shoulders before throwing an occurring look at the open air beside you. “If I’d known Hyrule had such a useful potion, I would’ve suggested making it earlier and we could’ve avoided this whole confusing situation.”

“To be fair, I doubt I would've gone along with making such a strange potion before the whole time slip thing. I was so desperate for answers afterwards I kind of just did whatever.” You admit, rubbing the back of your neck before stepping back from the man.

“I didn’t realize my actions would leave you in such a state. I apologize, however, at the time, that was the only way I could think to warn you of what was to come.”

“Speaking of, you didn’t leave any of us with much information on that front, either. What were you warning them about? And why were you in such a rush about it that you couldn’t even explain it to us before taking action?” Warriors steps forward, curious.

“My original intention was to send them to the day of the ambush. I needed them to know about the Shadow, because something in my soul told me that it would be approaching, and that they would play a key role in the upcoming confrontation. Unfortunately, in my rush to warn them, I brought us both into a time slip, and what’s worse, it wasn’t even the intended day. I lost control quickly after that, and lost my form for a while. I’m glad to see that it wasn’t all for nothing. You all worked together, and now our friend has the ability to see and speak to us. What’s more, they fought against monsters and won.”

“Barely. Twilight had to intervene.” Wild huffs, before seeing the uncomfortable look on your face at his comment. “That’s not your fault, though. It’s not your job to fight monsters or anything like that. We should’ve… We should be able to protect you. We would be able to if we weren’t… like this.” Wild sighs, roughly dragging his hand through his hair.

“It’s not your fault you died. I’m just glad we all made it out of that fight mostly okay.” You mumble, and Wild nods.

“Time came back fine, even if it took a while. I’m sure Twilight’ll be back the same as the old man in no time.” Wind assures, smiling up at Wild. The older man ruffles the kids hair before focusing back on the topic at hand.

“The young one is right. Twilight will be back soon, but in the meantime, we mustn't slack off. You are in danger right now, with no real knowledge on how to protect yourself. The shadow has yet to appear, but that does not mean he won’t in the near future. You must prepare, or you may meet the same fate as the rest of us.” Time warns, and you nod resolutely. The thing that killed these heroes now seems to be after you, and you’ll need to do everything in your power to protect yourself.

“You want to know if I own a gun??” Carrie asks, incredulous as you lean on the edge of her desk. You approached her nice and casual- just another monday at work.

“With all of the monster sightings lately, it wouldn’t hurt to get some extra protection.” You smile innocently, and the blonde haired woman squints at you before seeming to lighten up.

“You actually came to the right place, my strange, staff-bearing friend.” Carrie assures, and you glance at the fire rod on your back. The boys all insisted you bring a couple of them with you when you leave the house, and especially insisted on bringing a weapon like the fire rod or master sword, even if you thought it would make you look odd.

“I have quite the collection of firearms. You know, I got an honorable discharge after taking an arrow to the knee, but guns still hold a special place in my heart.” Carrie sighs dreamily, and your brain stutters to a halt. No you did not know that Carrie was part of the military. What sort of a lore drop is this??

“Anyway~ Stop by anytime and I’ve got a semi-auto hellcat with your name on it.” Carrie winks before spinning her chair to face back towards her computer. You honestly didn’t expect that to be so easy- at most, you thought she’d spout off nonsense about grabbing an airsoft from Walmart or something.

“Your friend is wierd.” Legend mumbles from over your shoulder, and you nod in agreement, completely missing the strange looks your other coworkers squint your way as you seemingly talk to yourself the entire walk back to your cubicle.

thoughts abt legend and wild in the new update

okay okay before i start writing i wanted to post my thoughts abt the new update and Especially legend and wild bc me and kholby have been talking recently abt them a lot bc of the lost hero au

spoilers for the most recent linked universe update. make sure to go read here

first thing i want to bring attention to is how much legend cares about them. i haven't written and read legend too much but one thing that always stands out to me is how much he cares about the others.

(i have. So Many. thoughts about legend. none of them are coherent but i have the Thoughts. its not as bad as my wild brainrot but by god its getting there)

but this doesn't always mean this care is going to come across as care. legend isn't trying to downplay wild's abilities or his experience, but i can 100% see wild taking it this way esp considering how warriors act later in the chapter. maybe not right now in this moment but possibly if legend keeps this attitude up and if they're grouped together.

also!!! one thing i'm looking forward to in this arc is how jojo is going to handle the whole "wild in a classic zelda dungeon" thing. so far i think the others are right to worry about how wild is going to handle this But on the other hand I wonder if this arc will have wild showing off his resourcefulness and adaptability. jojo's already mentioned wild's resourcefulness and his Unconventional thinking and i think this arc could possibly be when this skill gets focused on But at the same time highlight some of wild's weaknesses too. wars pointing out that they need to consider everyone's perspective and inputs really adds to this.

this also makes me think abt who jojo is going to pair wild with. i think based off their interactions here he's either going to be paired with legend or warriors, more likely warriors. (or maybe both! who knows) anyways thats all my thoughts.

Honestly, I felt touched by your answer to the other anon. It must be very tiresome to deal with shit like that for so long.

People are rage baiting, throwing ready-made arguments abt everything. From serious topics like politics to fans enjoying a movie. Respectful discussion doesn't exist.

I've seen an answer inside a thread that I think apllies: if someone says rude things online to a damn stranger, said stranger has no obligation of being polite back or to try to understand. People need to rethink how they interact online. And, in some cases, there's no solution, jerks will be jerks.

And goddddd I have so many things to say about the state of respectful discussion (and the lack of it) in Star Wars fandom, because I don't think I've met a fandom where it's so complicated to even just understand the boundaries of a given discussion. Like, okay, let's say I'm going to have a conversation with someone who is Jedi-critical and we want it to be a respectful discussion--what does that look like? Because I've had discussions that I thought were very civil and fruitful, but then later almost every time I would see the person comment something like "Jedi fans are so blind they can't admit the truth." on someone else's post, often about a subject that we'd discussed. So, what initially felt like a respectful discussion then becomes completely soured and another source of contention in the fandom imo. And then there's the consideration of, what constitutes respectful discussion to both parties--if I completely disagree with everything you say and state my views with confidence (frex "Attachment is not the same thing as love, because the Jedi are primarily influenced by Buddhists on this aspect and both word of god commentary and the canon source material itself are extremely consistent on this."), does the other person consider that disrespectful to them if they disagree? I don't consider it inherently disrespectful, so long as we're talking about the content of the canon and not about other real people, because, babe, you can just not agree. I'm not doing anything to stop you. But I've found a lot of people think I'm trying to force them to agree with me when, no, I'm just stating things on my own blog as things I view as facts. People are free to disagree with me, just as I disagree with them, but a lot of people often seem to think differently as far as I can tell. I've seen so many discussions where people are like, "Finally! A respectful discussion in Star Wars!" and it's like. 90% of them just agreeing with each other. Like, yeah, it's easy to have a "respectful discussion" when you largely overlap opinions. But would they be that considerate if the person didn't largely agree with them? Would they still consider it respectful if the other person maintained their disagreement? And then there's the thorny, "What do we even consider 'canon'?" because, for me, I'm not really that into the Legends continuity for example. It's a very cool continuity, there's so much there that I love, but my heart is with Lucas' continuity. Some people really don't accept anything from the Disney continuity. All of that is fine, but to have a discussion, you have to figure out if you're using supplementary material and where each of you is coming from. And if you mix-and-match, that's another thing you have to address, because not everyone does.

And this is all over some fictional made up stories! Politics is easy to see why it gets so contentious--real people's lives are really on the line, anyone who can calmly discuss life and death situations for a lot of people like they don't matter is someone I'm going to have a hard time understanding. But over Star Wars? Having to overcome all of the above and pour a ton of energy into being compassionate when you've been burned so many times, all because of a fictional space story?? A lot of times it just doesn't seem worth it when there are better uses for our time and it's not like anyone's life is on the line here. (Like writing up a reference guide or silly Jedi Temple Life headcanons! So much more productive feeling!) So when someone comes into my inbox with bad faith commentary, I can only set down my boundaries and refuse to dance with them on the subject they're trying to needle me with. If they want a real discussion, they can pull up their big person's undies and approach me with good faith. Ultimately, I'm more interested in talking about how we treat each other and thinking that maybe that can provide some progress, rather than arguing about the same things we've done forever, because people are going to settle where they will, so many of us just aren't moving because we've done the homework, spent our time in the mines, and come to the conclusions we have after a lot of thought about it. Discussions where you're trying to move someone who doesn't want to be moved don't feel fruitful to me, I need a different purpose to engage and I'm doing my best to convey that that's where my boundary is, to people who come into my inbox. Genuinely good faith discussions are welcome, but you're going to have to pour a lot of compassion into it, because I'm going to be pouring a lot of compassion into a good faith discussion, too, otherwise I don't see it going anywhere. And people who try are going to get the same response they always get. I'll try to be gentle as I can about it, but seriously. Eight years of this. Extend me some grace, you guys, okay? 😂

anyway all of this to say that swtor has some revan content and it centers around revan getting lost inside his own legacy and going back to Evil Revan (tm) because that's what people *think* of as revan in the modern era. i didn't completely love the direction it went but it was revan content and therefore i was entranced. (...nonbinary revan or death though, the game just got that one wrong, sorry.)

The understanding of [Revan] as an individual and then how Revan has shaped the lives of so many people and in many ways for the negative because that’s what war does.

And from that, like, the cycles of anger right? [Revan] who desperately and delusionally thought they were doing the right thing for the Republic at every turn met by the Exile who--depending on how you play them but how I played mine--wants nothing more than for Revan all to pay for the pain they caused him—wanting that acknowledgement and apology because if he doesn’t get it, organically or otherwise, then… what? The Exile has suffered and for what?

There’s no single act of violence or vengeful murder that’s going to undo it. It doesn’t end.

Understanding that perhaps [Revan] reached a point that they felt that, as an individual, they had no real power but as Revan--the mask--they DID? They could enact change? Because of the mythology, the legend, so who are theywithout it? And if Revan is all of these things that they’re propagandized to be, then it isn’t “Revan is doing this because it’s the right thing” but it instead becomes “It’s the right thing BECAUSE Revan is doing it”.

My friend pointed out: an inversion happens when the myth has cemented itself and it becomes its own justification--because now you don't need anything else. It's a trap! A potent and effective trap.

And the draw of having that power is intoxicating. and then you think:

What happens to Warriors at the end of LU, when everyone goes home? Is it as bad as when Mask went home, or has War gotten a little better at coping since then? How DOES he cope? How does Sidney help him?

He’s absolutely gotten better at coping since then, but it’s still hard for him. It’s still REALLY hard for him. When Mask went home, War shoved him through the portal and had to look at the betrayed look on the kid’s face as the portal closed, thinking he would never see Mask again and the last thing he did was hurt him. He’ll have enough time to properly say goodbye to Time, to say what he needs to, and he’s not going to make Time be the one to leave so he’ll force himself to step away first. And it’ll be awful for him to lose Mask all over again, to lose Wind. It’ll be hard to lose Twilight and Sky, and Four and Wild, and Legend and Hyrule too because he loves all of them so much, but he’ll be okay. He’ll miss them so terribly, but saying goodbye to them won’t destroy him like losing Mask at the end of the war did

HOW does he cope? By remembering them, and doing little things that reminds him of them. He’s picked up little habits from them, and he has a little bird that Sky carved for him, and ofc all the crayon drawings from Mask that he’s always kept, and he has doodles in his journal from Wind, recipes he learned from Wild, a rock Hyrule gave him once because the traveler thought it was just a good stone to hold, and so on. Sidney helps by just being there and offering comfort or a listening ear when Warriors wants to talk

but yeah, War’ll be alright. he’ll miss them, but he’ll be okay

post LU, after he spends some time mourning the loss of his friends, he is genuinely able to make a lot more progress towards healing, which he WAS doing during LU as well, but getting to see Mask and leave him on good terms fixed something in him that shattered when he shoved Mask away that first time. My hc for him is shortly after getting back from the LU journey he stops being so fussy with his hair and eventually stops dyeing it. he starts reclaiming who he is and feels a lot safer being HIM and not having to pretend so much. AND ALSO HE GOES HOME TO HIS MOM, AFTER LU. It’s one of the FIRST things he does

palisade 47! finalisade part 2!

truly three incredible scenes. also this is not going to be a short finalisade lmfao. probably minimum five more episodes (for a total of seven) but the sky's the limit. if they keep going at this rate of scenes, and presuming interludes/epilogue are each one scene long, that'd already be a nine episode finalisade. very exciting

brnine's scene: so glad we finally got to come back around to their attempt to recruit lattice/refrain. it's a good opener for the finale, too, for brnine to be able to make a more successful argument in favor of fighting with mbreak now that they're in the mirage. also obviously it's excellent to have a nobel ghost literally fully just haunting the blue channel now

refrain flickering between faces was really fun. friends at the table has some excellent genderfluidities. speaking of, my first thought re tm comparisons was polyphony--another town created by a shapeshifter (although changing personality rather than face) who wanted folks to come in and stay. was really interesting to me that refrain accepted the compromise of taking only the willing, which is sort of coming at polyphony's strategy from the opposite direction. refrain as archive was also really compelling to me. i like when an archive is covetous and hungry and persuasive, and constructs morality around/within itself, and is animated by preservation and interment. (chanting: WORST! PARTS! OF! MUSEUMS!)

lastly, the question of "what happens when the war's over" has been a quieter throughline in palisade (highly entangled with the whole blue channel self-sacrifice situation, cf phrygian) and it was interesting that brnine raised it to refrain. i'm curious whether that's going to come to the forefront in p3--really depends on what's going on at the end of the perfect millennium, i think.

august's scene: ahhh what a mess. delicious. really good visuals here as well--steeple catterick, clem on her big dramatic dragon, cori's new mech in action (skeleton covered in blooming flowers!), giant ink ferrets devouring the bilat front line and then vanishing and leaving only bloodstains and echoes behind... love to see it

always fun when fatt discovers an animal on air. i do think we should give the giant prehistoric otters serious consideration and also as many other giant prehistoric creatures as can fit (yes i'm still thinking abt the flash nautilus). it's thematically relevant

what did catch my attention about the ultimate result of the scene, re the iconoclasts turning indiscriminately on anyone military (thus neatly equating the bilats and the cause), is that it immediately shoves august's storyline farther in the direction of "compromised and implicated simply through the use of violence". i do wonder where august's gonna end up by the end of palisade--he's on a similar path, i think, to a couple other characters who have struggled to see beyond the war, but he's in much more of a position to be found guilty for it. does seem like he's set up to fail

cori's scene: YAAAAAAAAAY GO CORI :D what a win, what a legend. finally kissed a girl. good for her. the crumbling ballroom filled with the map of the galaxy was reminiscent of brnine and dahlia in a very fun way. "i didn't want to scare you off with my power" / "you know it's an invitation" / [blushing, stammering] "....for what"

my favorite thing about the scene was cori using perennial magic to show elle a potential future for the two of them, because it's such a perfect mirror to future's visions. like, cori can create that herself, using perennial's magic, when elle asks ("build me another dream, then" was such a tasty line), rather than the aura of future dragging it out of her. and can share it (and shape it, and rewrite it) rather than just envisioning it privately. a really interesting contrast between the two divines and their respective views on possibility

can see a one-way ticket out of the mirage being a really pivotal thing to have on the table in a few episodes. cannot wait :):):)

So I was rereading some of your old posts bc u have the Best loz takes and you mentioned theorizing the fierce deity is the first hero and as a certified first hero stan I NEED to know more abt this!!! Can you go more into depth?

Oh dear mutual oh my dear friend- I have SO MANY thoughts about how the fierce deity may be the first hero, let me walk you down my whole thought process as I'm wholly so unwell over the very concept of the fierce deity.

First of all, this whole idea came to my brain during my majora's mask playthrough and I really enjoyed how it was such an interesting parallel to hyrule. With... the exception of two very important things, Ganondorf and Zelda, power and wisdom, the two things that seem to consume every single bit of hyrulean history no matter the time period. Another thing that's interesting is that they're are far fewer instances of the triforce in termina compared to hyrule and if you prefer the 3ds remake- which I played- over the n64, the triforces that were on the statues were removed.

That means it's definitely hinted that termina doesn't have a triforce or at least it's so far ago in the past and its people have little to no attachment to it. There's no princess, there's no demon king, there's no triforce! But the one thing that it does have that hyrule does not is actual evidence of the hero, the fierce deity mask.

One thing that's always stumped me about the greater loz timeline or just all of the various games- there's little to no... influence of the heroes spirit, or courage, whichever you like to refer all of the Link's under. Ganondorf and Zelda can exist on their own without relying on the other's existence, but Link can't! At most the only real things we see that carry Link through history is faded legends of a hero, but that's it. The hero holds no presence in the minds of the people of hyrule, they simply appear and disappear when disaster calls for them.

But, as I mentioned, termina is the sole exception to this as the fierce deity mask exists and it holds Link's exact visage. Hylia is painted in Zelda's features, Demise is painted in Ganondorf's features, so what does that make the fierce deity?

Another interesting fact to me is that nothing relating to the hero exists in skyward sword, so that must mean that whatever the fierce deity is- they must've existed beforehand. Also, we really don't have any idea for just how old termina is, but if you see them as being a direct mirror to hyrule then it makes sense that they've been around just as long.

So here's my idea: the fierce deity must've existed before even skyward sword, meaning that they likely existed around the time of Hylia's and Demise's first initial battle that brought hylians to the sky. But at the same time, the fierce deity had to be gone from memory by the time of skyward sword.

Which leads to another idea of mine: why is termina hidden away? Virtually no one is ever going to stumble across it, the only reason Time did was because he was literally dragged by skull kid. The portal is hidden deep inside the lost forest at the bottom of a hole that none with rational sense would ever think about going down. One of my first thoughts during my playthrough was that it seemed to be on purpose, to hide its very existence away.

Its said that the goddesses created termina, but did they covet that land as they did hyrule? Did they give it the same blessings and care as it did to the land that Hylia and Demise reigned over? I would say not as the goddesses have seemingly abandoned it and so has its people, the goddesses and triforce have no power there.

All of this leads to my final conclusion: the fierce deity is the first hero and perhaps either fought by Hylia's side during the war against Demise, or the fierce deity was the very thing who dealt the killing blow to Demise.

But here's the thing that really interests me about the fierce deity, its in his very name. Demise, Ganondorf, the Demon King... he's commonly seen as one of the strongest entities in the entirety of hyrule, so much so that his visage and tales of his strength carry through all of history. Despite all that, he only carries the title of king? Which makes the fierce deity even stranger in comparison because what is stronger, more intimidating, so much so that the very name of a god- is in his name?

Wouldn't you think such a grand title would undoubtedly carry some kind of weight in the greater sense of hyrules history? But it doesn't, which leads me to my next thought.

The fierce deity was purposely taken to termina, whether it was willingly or not is up to you but I personally think it wasn't. All of that power was sealed into a mask and then that mask was trapped in a world that was hidden away from the rest of all the worlds and dimensions. What does it mean that Time comes across a mask that looks just like him and holds such immense power? A power that rivals darkness itself but not with light, just the willingness to meet that darkness with its own.

The fierce deity in my mind is... powerful, the first hero ever to exist and his strength reflects that. Someone who was able to go toe to toe with Demise at his strongest and win, not only that, but to prove his strength as a god even over Demise. This is me saying that the fierce deity and the first hero are one and the same!

Also why the fierce deity was trapped inside termina is genuinely up to interpretation. Maybe the goddesses and Hylia both became fearful of his power, maybe the people themselves became scared of him, maybe he was trapped. Who knows! That's the beauty of creativity you can truly do whatever you please lol.

But yeah here's my incredibly elaborate, detailed headcanon that the fierce deity has way more worldbuilding than what's shown and is actually the first ever wielder of courage. I also have a whole headcanon that only the Link's can wear the fierce deity mask but that's a WHOLE other meta in of itself lmao

for all the griping i do about cd projekt dropping the ball on river’s story, nothing is more humiliating than my once-upon-a-time main guy being from a “video game” so poorly written and comically shallow that it’s more known for porn than the actual story (of which there is none). and that’s not even a joke - it literally does not have consistent “lore” bc it’s been passed around between dozens of writers for several years who never communicated. example: the cowboy has 3 different official “canon” ages depending on what source you use

how i got sucked in

if i never skipped the first day of the winter semester in 2018 bc it was cold outside, i wouldn’t have wasted my day on tumblr and thus would have never saw gabe on my dash. i knew of ovw bc of the fanart and unfunny memes like everyone else online but i never paid attention until that moment. with the amount of content there was and how many of my friends abandoned their fandoms for it, i thought it was a serious rpg and i found out it was a fucking online-only first person shooter, the literal bottom tier for me as far as games go

but i thought it was a sign that i needed to “do my homework”. except there was no homework. what i thought the established “canon” i saw everywhere was just fanon. there was nothing to go off of. reaper didn’t have a cinematic or a comic and had a total of 4 lines of dialogue in his human form

why was it so compelling

the landscape was different in 2016 when ovw dropped bc that’s when the conversation abt representation in video games was at its height. but looking back, and knowing that games like apex legends did everything overwatch promised infinitely better, it was never that “diverse” to begin with and the way they handled that diversity was just weird. it’s crazy to put in perspective that it was ever considered so “progressive” and “game changing”.

every east asian chara is an orientalist fantasy. they never confirmed gabe’s ethnicity and just let people run with the ’’vaguely brown but 100% terrorist’’ narrative that permanently ruined his fanon characterization. they made a racist skin for ph4rah and then quickly retconned her into being half-indigenous canadian to combat the backlash and then never mentioned that aspect of her identity again. mccr33 had a confederate skin. the women all have the same face. the only reveal a character is queer when there’s a major scandal. oh yeah, and every character is literally a stereotype

i personally never cared about the promised “representation” bc it was like a parody like tf2. i thought they were doing the satirical total drama island thing but for games. i couldn’t believe that people were legitimately into it for the blatant pandering, but i thought it must’ve had a good and compelling concept. when i watched the cinematics and read the available comics, i thought it did

why i got into it

the sole reason is bc i was fascinated by gabe. outside of his appearance, i became interested in how he went from being the leader of the covert ops division to being the Main Villain

the lack of details in the established groundwork was everything to me, who was starved for a new place to take my writing after star wars completely killed all my creativity. blizzard gave a sample of what could have been and their laziness allowed my mind to run free. rather than be intimidating by writing due to too much lore and information (star wars) or turned off completely because the existing material was just so little (river), ovw hit the sweet spot for my brain. blizzard gave me a bare bones skeleton and i did the rest

people complained about gabe’s powers never being explained, but i loved it. my idea was that he did in fact die in the hq disaster but was reborn due to “reaper” taking full control after fighting his body for decades. reaper himself is still gabe behind the wheel but in wraith form. the smoky ghost ermac-esque version popularized in fanarts is what gave me the inspiration, along with ripping off the entire concept of “stands”. i never liked the idea that reaper was a demonic creature with a bunch of teeth or a vampire. he was just a ghosty gabe in my books

i also hated the way the fanon adopted the notion that gabe was “jealous” that he was relegated to blackwatch bc i saw that as being his purpose: the thankless dirty work. he didn’t need bureaucratic red tape stopping him from cleaning up the messes ovw made. he made an entire covert ops division and recruited jesse personally. their dynamic was also a huge thing for me, sometimes in a shippy way and sometimes in a mentor-mentee way and a lot of the time both

ovw was an untapped narrative goldmine that gave me so much creative juice that’s still gone unmatched (river came the closest, but like i said above, his problem wasn't lack of detail - it was that there was so little)

i also liked ana and her complicated relationship with her daughter. the relationship between jesse and gabe was similarly captivating, being that it was my all time fave trope: jaded cynical older character (gabe) winds up becoming the mentor of a slightly naive but promising newcomer in whatever field they’re in (jesse). i wanted to know how it would play out once they were face to face: would it be student becomes master or would jesse regret ever thinking he could get out of gabe’s shadow? neither, because they fucking lied and did nothing

also, gabe was sexy. i can’t discount how hot reaper was, but when i saw how he used to look before the Vague Experiment happened i knew i wasn't immune to Sarcastic Gruff Dilf. there was actually a period of time after i watched venom that i became more obsessed with reaper than gabe bc i envisioned him being more tangible and monster-like than ghostly.

what it did for my writing

i only stuck to two sides of the fandom: ana and pharah’s relationship and mcreyes/blackwatch. ana was naturally characterized as the “mom” because of her age, but she also got sucked into “pair the spares” so people shipped her with the other Old Man. she was also a victim of blizzard not giving a fuck about their female characters so the fandom at large relegated her to being the mediator between gabe and the captain america expy, bc that’s how “canon” presented her. on the other hand, pharah’s “lore” was completely unfinished and she was only ever mentioned in relation to being the “mean lesbian” with no personality gf to whichever more popular female character fit the bill. so i wrote my own character studies about them and didn’t really include any other characters bc i just didn’t care. this is also how i got to develop The OC Formerly Known As Xia's backstory and character

despite how unserious the fans were expected to take the source material, i somehow crafted my most intricate aus and worldbuilding bc of overwatch. i loved gabe the way i never loved a fictional video game man until river. i’m so on and off and never engaged with the fandom beyond a few fics but gabe stuff i wrote for myself. i fully ignored whatever came out about gabe if it conflicted with the character i portrayed in my stories and was content believing that there would never be content for him again, in the same way writers who write for series that have been dead for years do. why? bc blizzard lied about worldbuilding and didn’t deliver on the promises for comics, tv series and the fucking movie (lol. lmao even).

but i still loved gabe. i used the anger i had at blizzard for refusing to confirm basic details and fanon for reducing him into a stereotype that plagued every other fic of him. i hated that any discussion of gabe was punctuated with j*ck and always vilified gabe instead of exploring the nuances of his character. i hated that half the art of him was twinkified and whitewashed and i couldn't tell it apart from st*v*t*ny. but in my stories he was everything. he was the reason i made my most cherished OC and explored themes i shyed away from before

i still love him. i think about him every time i get too into a new thing or a new guy my brain constantly thinks up ways to insert him. the irony is that gabe and ovw are the most shallow 1-dimensional IPs but i've got more out of it creativity wise than anything else i've ever been into

Time: is surprisingly kinda good at it, typically gets third or fourth place. Is also one of the only members to vote fairly. Sucks at posing though. He never uses the right poses and uses the same ones repeatedly. He takes forever to scroll through the pose list, so he only gets like three or four poses before the time runs out. Bc he’s a simp, he dresses as Malon for all the romantic themes or “your favorite person” themes

Warriors: is violently serious about this game. Plays it regularly and is incredibly good at it. He has all the buyable items as well as vip and custom makeup, and is already top model. He doesn’t vote fairly at all, openly trash talks the others’ outfit, and gives them all unsolicited “tips” on how they could improve.

Twilight: he’s decent at it, he tries to layer but always forgets abt patterns and accessories so his outfits are always kinda boring. The time limit stresses him out, so he rushes all over the place, freaking out if he accidentally puts on the wrong item or colors it wrong, even though he never actually runs out of time. Spends entirely too long in hair and makeup. He votes fairer than others, but the most he’ll give someone else is four stars. Tries to duo with Wild sometimes, but Wild secretly thinks he’s bad and will make up excuses to not duo with him.

Sky: he’s not bad, but he’s also just not the best. But he is super supportive, he’ll hype pretty much everyone up, gushing about everyone else’s outfits as he goes. You’d think he’d vote fairly, and he means well, but he ends up voting all the “bad” outfits five stars so they’d have a chance at winning. It pisses Warriors off so bad. He always forgets to color his nails so they stay red every theme. Warriors complains that it’s because he doesn’t want them done by Lina, and that he should just play the game right, but it’s genuinely because he never thinks abt it.

Legend: is actually pretty good at it, fairly competitive, but mostly just against Warriors. He trash talks Wars’ fits every time, even if he actually likes them. He votes fairly for everyone but Warriors just to spite him. Duos with Hyrule most rounds. Dress as a corpse or the grim reaper for the “me in ___ years” themes, he’s the only one who thinks it’s funny.

Wild: is also freakishly good at it, but tends to use the same items. He uses the granny dress for almost every theme, claiming it’s “really good for layering.” Does not vote fairly, most he’ll give someone if he likes it is three stars. Claims it’s rigged every time he doesn’t place.

Four: he’s decent at it, like Sky he’s not bad but also not really good. He is a Menace to everyone though, he will ask people to secretly team up and give each other five stars, but he’ll only vote the other three stars. Everyone else caught on and won’t team with him anymore, but Wind falls for it every time.

Hyrule: not very good, but the thought is there. He probably over-layers, uses items that don’t work together, and too many patterns. It’s giving maximalism but just bad. Also really bad at posing. Spends most of the round trying to break into vip with Wind

Wind: he’s terrible. Absolutely horrible at this game, but he’s having so much fun. He uses obnoxiously loud colors, doesn’t layer, doesn’t use patterns, and over-accessorizes. He tries to be creative with the themes, but just executes it badly. Warriors get so mad because he will often get first or second place, because Sky keeps giving him five stars out of pity. He doesn’t realize that that’s why and brags about getting podium every time, causing Warriors to rage quit several times.

- legend did Not like warriors when they first met. hed definitely go a bit too far in insults (tho he kinda did that w most of them), though it was mostly jabs about military things and less about warriors himself

- when warriors starts playing along and lightheartedly answering legend's jabs back cues the start of a ~ beautiful friendship ~ and legend eases up on his more genuine insults

- legend and warriors end up having late night conversations when one of them is awake during the other's shift. its not rare for it to happen by any means, but it is uncommon so they enjoy the time when they can. this is usually when more of the more delirious comments and banter comes out to play. its one of those talks you have with your friend at 1-6am that starts with casual conversation, takes a sharp turn to trauma, and then dissolves into sleepy delirium

- sometimes they're just sitting together silently at night and one of them catches the other's eye and they both start fucking cackling for no reason. they settle down and then one of them fuckin giggles and they dissolve into a fucking fit of laughter again until someone tells them to shut up. (they do not shut up.)

- they fight so seamlessly together. its REALLY damn cool. you could swear theyve done this before, but in reality they just understand what the other person is thinking and a Look one of them shoots at the other just kinda spells everything out. all the plans and ideas - they know each other well enough to adapt to what the other person is doing and they definitely trust one another to pull off some of the more crazy stunts legend or warriors have thought up during a battle. if one of them says "duck" they do not fucking hesitate.

- very quickly, though not very easily, warriors becomes one of the first people legend goes to to confide in. if he does not want something sugarcoated, warriors is (one of) his best bets for that. it also goes the other way - legend does not sugarcoat anything and will readily tell warriors if hes being stupid.

- they both are very good at balancing seriousness and lighthearted comments, but theyre also capable of being Very Serious if a situation calls for it.

theres a moth in my fucking room. help

- warriors is very aware that legend could absolutely beat his ass. warriors is VERY aware that legend, when the vet is In The Zone, could absolutely fuck every single one of them up. he is very supportive of him. hes also very glad legend is on their side, especially when he witnesses the guy absolutely knock out a few black blooded monsters on his own.

- legend has definitely beaten warriors ass in many spar sessions and warriors always says he cheats or fought dirty. legend disagrees <3 u just suck, bro, get good :///

- warriors and legend bet but most of the time neither of them actually follow through with the bet's prize so sometimes theyll come up with the funniest fucking prizes and then say shit like "hey you owe me fifty bees, remember?" or "you still owe me half your inventory" or "dont i get to have the next [sweet food/good item] you get/are given?"

- just wait til you hear about the time warriors got legend to go swimming/run around with him in the rain. (not a lightning storm, but it was heavy rain. its very nice btw.)

Wind and Wars need to hug. Wind has had far too many Things happening on this quest to not receive them and he really looks up to Wars, but he's doing the Teenage Boy thing of not asking for affection bc he's trying to act adult. He's 17, still a kid fr, and Wars needs to hug him and tell him he loves him and is proud of him. The same thing needs to happen w Time and Wars fr (and they might have gotten that a little when Wars went off to talk to him in the orchard after that blow up) but I've been thinking abt Wind and Wars since he got spooked by Twilight, okay. It has been a thought on my mind for a LONG time.

Please please think about the chain going back to Sky's era and Twi chatting with Sun and playing with Sky's kids. He Loves kids, he is so good with them fr, he'd think Polly and Sola are delightful (if energetic together). Think about his Thing with Sky. Think about how Sky would feel watching Twilight laugh and entertain all of them and then look over at Sky with this bright, happy smile. There are butterflies in Sky's stomach and he can't get them to go away. He's gotta talk to Sun about this wolfman STAT jxgxgdjssb. Same vein, Sky meeting Hazel and getting teased by Telma and aggressively assessed by Dusk.

Ooh! We talked about this the other day. Wars learning violin and he and Legend playing together! Legend on piano or cello 🥰 My mans Warriors can't play wind instruments but he should get to try all the types before giving up on playing music, especially with a musical savant bf

If you are feeling down, we have just the thing! Piggybacking off of Kio, I’m gonna tell you something about the Hero of Warriors. This is a man who loves music. Adores it to pieces. He grew up around it if in a very everyday sense, because his mother hummed and sang as she went about her day around the house. He doesn’t know it because she liked to improvise and mashup melodies, but he actually grew up listening to what essentially amounts to the soundtrack of the rest of the chains adventures. As such, he has a VERY keen ear for melody and gasp, the whiteboi has RHYTHM !! if Legend could just get him to pick up a string instrument (Any string instrument, sized for his hands and devoid of having to blow any kind of air into it), he would be a very happily surprised savant.

If that isn’t enough, then I feel obligated to impart to you this snapshot into New Parents Sun And Sky.

For the first year and a half, despite having two fully functional cribs for their two daughters, the baby furniture sat gathering dust at night. Why, might you ask— and I’ll happily tell you.

It’s because they were both so enamored with the cute and terrified at how small the twins were, that they were afraid to be outside of arms reach of them and thus the babies slept in between them. Sun and Sky would curl up, more or less fetal position but not quite, and create a barrier between themselves and the scary long drop from the bedside to the floor.

Their daughters slept right in the middle of a mommy and daddy heart shape, and I just think that’s neat. ❤

now that I am on topic abt the war of two queens:

I can overlook many things when I enjoy a series. I am like “fine ok I don’t agree/like X but I like all the rest so it is fine”. But something that I hate, loathe, detest, despise, fucking hate with my entire heart and soul is what was done to Casteel’s character. I will never be able to overlook or forgive what was done to him from fbaa to twotq. He is my favorite character and he was completely destroyed. Cas' character used to be deep and complex, he used to be this heartless atlantian prince who would destroy anything and anyone that interfered with his plans; he was feared by many and almost a legend among commoners that knew him as the dark one. BUT at the same time, he was a generous kind hearted prince who was well loved and respected by his people. He would do anything and everything for his loved ones and was a ruler that would die for his kingdom…but now he is more of a fat house cat. I get it, he loves poppy, I adore poppy too but can we please give casteel his personality back???? One of the reasons I liked fbaa sm was because there was romance but poppy and cas had their own personality/abilities besides being “the love interest”. Now cas is turning into poppy's husband only and I hate it. I love the romance but he can decided or have an opinion without being influenced by poppy or he can have thoughts besides poppy. I hate it I hate it I absolutely hate it. I love cas so I really hope he will get much more spotlight and be back again a character with a personality/purpose sooner rather thank later.
