Saving Memories One Page at a Time

Cas takes up scrapbooking with a passion and Dean tries his best to avoid getting involved.

“Dean, would you like to help me?” Cas looks up from the kitchen table, which is currently covered with several teetering piles of crafting supplies, and offers his boyfriend a beseeching smile.

Dean has been avoiding this conversation all week.

Newly human and blessed with almost endless spare time now that Sam's hunter network covers the majority of cases in the country, Cas has been trying out some hobbies. In the past few weeks, he's knitted dozens of scarves and hats (most of which have been donated to the homeless shelter downtown). There's a new garden behind the Bunker, lush and thriving. He passed level 12,000 on Candy Crush. And he dusted off a film camera that he'd found on a back shelf of the library and used it to produce approximately a metric shit-ton of photographs. Cas has now thoroughly documented the Bunker, its inhabitants, their daily routines, their every meal, the garden and its surroundings, and just about every stray mammal in the county.

These pictures cannot simply be shoved into a shoebox like Dean had assumed, however. Oh no no. They must be lovingly preserved, a handful at a time, on acid-free paper, in themed groupings, adorned with complementary accents, borders, rubber stamps, stickers, and hand-calligraphed inspirational quotes.

In other words, Cas has gone gaga for scrapbooking. And he wants Dean to join him.

Now, never let it be said that Dean shies away from the creative and the domestic arts. Once he settled into the Bunker and let himself shake off his Dad's bullshit rules for “How a Man Should Act,” Dean dove headfirst into homemaking.

He's got a Pinterest board where he saves recipes that the whole family will eat (because you try cooking a casserole that can be enjoyed by a Meat Man, a Paleo-flexitarian, a freshly-fallen connoisseur of individual molecules, and God Himself with a four-year-old's palate). He's dabbled in interior decorating, running up their bottomless credit cards at Pottery Barn and IKEA to freshen the living areas with overstuffed couches and coordinating throw pillows. And when someone's got a ripped flannel or a pair of jeans that needs to be altered? Dean's the guy with the mad needle skillz they all turn to.

Scrapbooking, though? That feels a little too much like the sort of thing Karen from the suburbs does with her time, in between wine-soaked book club meetings with her gal pals and clandestine dalliances with the pool boy. Dean is firmly uninterested.

But Cas has been sending out increasingly loud “come join me” signals ever since he pasted his first snapshot of a sunset onto a piece of blue card stock last Tuesday. All week, whenever Dean took some downtime in the Dean Cave or popped a squat in the library, within a few minutes Cas would be at his elbow, spreading out his supplies and casting hopeful glances his way. It's become harder and harder for Dean to pretend he doesn't know what Cas wants here. Yesterday he got so desperate, he faked a wicked migraine and slunk off for a 3-hour nap. But now here he is, cornered.

“Uhhh,” Dean replies, stalling for time. “Help you... How would that even work?”

“Well, you could assist me in choosing the accent colors, or you could take over trimming the scalloped border pieces. Or you could make your own page, if you like. I can show you how!” Cas eagerly clears a space among the mounds of stationery supplies and lays out a fresh sheet. Dean knows when he's been defeated. With a sigh, he plops down on the chair next to his boyfriend.

Cas launches into a spirited tutorial on the joys and pitfalls of assembling an attractive page. Dean tries to pay attention, but he can't help it – he tunes out almost immediately. Cas is nattering on, shuffling paper around on the table, and Dean's nodding and thinking about which cars in the motor pool are due for an oil change. He's not listening to any of it, until...

Cas hands him a sheet of cowboy hat stickers. “I thought you'd enjoy these,” he says with a smile. “Oh, and also...” Cheeseburger stickers. A rubber stamp of the Metallica logo. A 4-inch die cut of a pristine black 1967 Chevy Impala.

“Holy shit,” Dean says with wonder. “Marry me.”

Cas freezes for a few seconds, then croaks, “What?”

The words had kind of slipped out of Dean's mouth, but he means them. Cas knows him better than anyone else ever has. He's thoughtful and sweet, and he wants to share his weird hobbies with Dean, and Dean loves him so goddamn much. He plucks the die cut from Cas's limp fingers and places it reverentially on the table, then takes his boyfriend's hand.

“You're awesome, and I love you. Marry me.”

Cas grins. “Yes.”

The first page they work on together commemorates their engagement. Dean puts a cowboy hat sticker on it.

mon has been alone fr as far back as she can remember (bt thts questionable now considering her memory has been gnawed down to the marrow by extensive and continuous use of ecstasy)

(tw abuse) wht she can briefly recollect is tht shes been on the streets since she was 16 n life before tht was desolate n sad. other than tht vague recap.... shes wiped her mind of being physically n verbally abused by her stepdad in a teeny tiny apartment in florida fr several yrs (since she was an infant) n all throughout it was never defended by her mom. in fact in her preteens her mom decided to jump in on it out of a warped jealousy she developed over the years in which she felt her husband was paying more attention to treating her daughter like garbage instead of her so she jst.... began including herself in the mistreatment mon was getting n basically verbally harassing her every day after school....... it worked in terms of forming a bond between her parents in a sick n worrying way bt was so so so crippling n horrible to mon

so wht really matters is whts in the present. dont even think abt learning much of her backstory because she cant recall any of her childhood except for those small granules tht lead to nowhere / provide no better understanding of who she is today n just send her spiraling since none of it makes any sense anymore. i think the one moment she will never b able to erase frm her mind however is when he (stepdad) smashed his cigarette into her mac n cheese n told her to eat it. she just sat and stared at it and cried

(tw homelessness) mon doesnt even remember running away. she mightve been dropped off fr all she knows.... cant pin any of her memories of going to school as a kid down even..... has kind of been an unidentifiable blip on the map since becoming homeless

tht being said... without a parent or guardian shes been fending fr herself n was a street rat fr such a long time. doesnt hav a drivers license or a ssn or even any form of ID. no credit card or debit card. knows her name n date of birth n buys flip phones frm the grocery store to keep in contact w people xx pays in all cash n coins xoxo

jump to now.... mon is technically homeless bt is content. lives on the beach n is more than happy with it. sometimes just sleeps on the sand bt has a trailer parked underneath a dock thts been getting threatened to be removed fr months now (she dsnt care). its decorated with all types of lights that shes found thrown out or at the thrift store n it glows so bright u can see the neon colors thru the boards of the dock above it. has lawn chairs in frnt of the door n a big cartoonish padlock on the door. she wears the key arnd her neck

(tw affair mention) personality wise shes vry naive n playful. part of this is the E bt a lot of it is wanting to feel like life is worth living even in the rough parts — shes found tht tht aspect of her can also be misconstrued as carefree n has gotten mingled with a handful (or three) of men tht take advantage of her untroubled nature to forget all of their responsibilities. at the moment she has an ongoing affair w a married man named hank who helps her stay on her feet by giving her money every month or two in an envelope with a big wax stamp on it. its nothing major bt it helps

(tw sexual content + drug use) mon kind of has a reputation bt i dont think shes aware of it. im sure a lot of locals bully her or pick on her fr it behind her back.... they kind of mistake her for a bit of a nymphomaniac bt she doesnt consider it tht way at all. things jst spun out of control the more n more she was using E (and other similar drugs) to get by n now being reliant on it she just gives in to urges n will sleep w just abt anyone. it turns out fine most of the time bt sometimes she just crashes on the way to their place n becomes this vacant girl tht doesnt speak or do much of anything. in one of these instances she n some dude were abt to hookup bt she crashed on the way to his apartment n he pulled ovr n pushed her out of the passengers seat onto the sidewalk. she jst laid there until the morning w her heels kicked off n scrapes all over her elbows n knees

so shes known fr many of these instances.... security guards finding her sprawled out on the asphalt of a parking lot or at the bottom of a staircase of a motel she doesnt know. its rly depressing

ANYWAY........ moving on from this sad sad sad stuff.... mon is notably a lovebug shes vry sweet n kind n she works shifts at fannies every two weeks or so / whenever ppl call out. she loves ppl she loves partying n dancing n she is fun. has no defined sexuality n questions gender a lot so considers herself nonbinary bt uses she/her/they/them. a bit odd and kind of unaware of wht is appropriate n what isnt (several instances of wearing bikinis n a pair of sneakers to shop for a loaf of bread n some lemonade) bt she means well

has a black kitten named shanks tht she litchrally considers her child. takes better care of him than she takes of herself n brings him places cradled in her arms like a baby

Directors cut for jj and indie moving into their apartment for the first time!!!

director’s commentary for turn a house into a home!

first of all, i just wanted them to have a new beginning, a fresh start, and (most of all) a place of their own; the majority of the last series was them sneaking around at the chateau and behind john b’s back, and even when he did find out they had to be careful about what they did and where. as much as i loved them all being at the chateau together, they needed their own space to allow their relationship to grow and develop, so that’s why i decided to move them into their own apartment. i also think that it proves to everybody, even john b, that they’re serious about each other; they weren’t just a summer fling, they aren’t just some young and dumb kids thinking that they’re going to last forever, and they’re not just messing each other around. realistically, indie and jj have been a long time coming, and this was their way of proving to everybody around them that they could shove their opinions where the sun doesn’t shine, because they were going to do them and they were going to be happy. 

second of all, i needed an emotional and dramatic goodbye with john b for a number of reasons; 1) indie is dramatic and there would have never been anything less of a dramatic and emotional goodbye, 2) both her and john b had been through so much with one another, as each other’s only family, that it needed to be done because they were finally in a good place and she’s essentially leaving him behind to move on with her life with jj (although not completely), it’s more the equivalent of a father walking his daughter down the isle, and 3) just to show exactly how far their relationship had come over the series. 

obviously, in all of this, i had to thrown in the little hints about john b and eve. for the most part, the story comes from the perspective of indie, and sometimes jj. it’s very centred around them, so i needed to drip feed little hints about john b and eve. you, the reader, found out these things as they were happening, and at the same time as indie and jj found them out. i, also, wanted to build the suspense up around that relationship, and make it kind of known that it had been going on for a while to maximise the hurt that indie would feel when she eventually found out. there’s also little moments that she can now look back on and realise what was going on, whether that’s a good or a bad thing remains to be seen. 

then, obviously, they had to christen their new apartment. a lot of the first series [the romantic tirades of indie routledge] is centred around their relationship progressing sexually, i.e. it goes from flirting and teasing, to fingering, to cunnilingus, to blow jobs, to them having sex. then, from there, it’s the dealing with the realisation that there are feelings are there, and then they have to deal with the consequences of those feelings. then, they had to deal with all the problems that were created during all of that. now, they’re in a good place romantically, and they can experiment in their sex life and this is the beginning of them trying new things out. some stuff will work, some stuff won’t. they don’t have any restrictions on what they do, where they do it or when they do it now. 

indie wanting to decorate was something that was just so wholesome to me. she’s gone from her childhood bedroom that’s still got a single bed with princess-themed bedsheets and stuffed animals, to a whole apartment of her own. there was only so much expression she could do in her childhood bedroom, but also she just didn’t get the chance to after he dad died. like, redecorating was not at the top of john b’s list of priorities, nor was it something that they could afford. but now she can and she was let loose. 

obviously she had made a million pinterest boards from the second she found out that jj had the apartment, and had so many themes and colour schemes that she had planned for, but we always knew she was going to go for something jj abhorrently hated. the both of them decorating, whether it was mainly indie’s choices and decisions, was just about them putting their own stamp on their place together. jj’s never really had a home that felt like home, and indie hasn’t had that since her dad went missing, so this was their way of reclaiming that feeling. it’s theirs and they’re proud of it. 

and, yes, she goes wild with the pink. or “rose gold” as she puts it. it’s pink but took a lot less persuading for jj to swipe his card at the checkout. she was always going to get her way when it came to things like this because, even though he will never admit it, but jj is a massive simp for indie. he loves her and will do anything to see her happy, especially after hearing about how upset and depressed she had been whilst he was away. he’s also very passive and nonchalant about insignificant things. at the end of the day, who cares if he has a pink rug and rose quartz crystals on his coffee table? he doesn’t; he’s still got a roof over his head, and his girlfriend by his side, and she’s happy. if she wanted to go knocking down walls it would be a different story, but a few decorations doesn’t harm anybody. 

it’s quite possibly my favourite thing, though. jj, living in indie’s pink haven after profusely refusing anything pink and fluffy. just the thought of this stereotypically strong and masculine guy living in a house decorated like that. it makes me laugh. i definitely did him dirty with it, but i honestly see that as how indie would decorate their apartment, and she would hold her pussy hostage until he played ball.

FAMILY HISTORY

kylie castillo is 2nd generation American, meaning that both pair of her grandparents immigrated to the United States a looong time ago from Mexico, and both her parents grew up in the USA. 

Her dad, alejandro castillo grew up in Los Angelos, California working to be a big time soccer player, and he got scouted but he ended up playing for MEXICO, and when he wasn’t playing for the official team, he played for Barcelona FC. So her dad made a name for himself in soccer. 

Her mom, lupe castillo molina grew up in Chicago, Illinois. She went to school and started up her own fashion brand, it was small and slowly growing as she was working as a seamstress for different companies all over Chicago. It took awhile to take off, but it did, and she had a shop in Spain bc she was illegal in the US and it was easier to stay in Spain and gain citizenship. ANYWAY, her shop blew up in Europe before getting big in the US. 

Both met in Barcelona where lupe was just a fan. it suddenly became more after they got pregnant, and after they married with their first child they decided to settle in Chicago. 

They were together until Kylie was 12 years old and her mom started seeing angelo altera, eventually marrying him for a few years. This means that she’s step siblings with lennon james and elissa altera! 

That marriage didn’t last that long, so right now both her parents are single, separated and living in different households that share the same customs. EXCEPT, kylie’s mom and dad seem to be sorta reconciling~

WHO IS KYLIE CASTILLO?

kylie was born in Chicago and she had a pretty normal childhood. she grew up in a house with her parents, siblings and grandparents under one household, growing up with hispanic traditions. She grew up speaking latin american spanish meaning she’s bilingual and is 100% PROUD of her ethnicity even though she has been told the typical slurs from ignorant people, but you know, it happens. it’s really only made her stronger as a person.

kylie has always been the closest to her dad and he implemented not just in kylie but in all of his kids that if you work hard you can achieve anything. to not let anyone tell you that you can’t do things. this was especially true with sports. ofc having a soccer player for a dad, kylie was automatically interested in soccer, all of her siblings were and are. they were known as the sports family on the block.

while her dad taught her sports and to toughen up in any situation, by no means does this mean she was a tomboy. she can play a game of soccer in 6 inch heels. if you don’t think so, she’ll prove it to you! So while her soccer interest grew, her mom would introduce kylie to clothes, makeup, cooking. all of that stuff so kylie always knew to be presentable. ‘let them judge you by what you wear so you can prove them wrong with who you are.’ is one of a thousand quotes her mom would tell her about life.

even if kylie grew up comfortable and in a good position, her parents instilled the value that you gotta work hard to get what you want. if you don’t implement blood, sweat and tears, you haven’t earned it. When her parents broke up, she went on a rebellious streak, more of a streak than the one she’s always on. she had family that weren’t the safest but for kylie it was safe. so she got involved with some shady characters, and she’s done some stufffffffffff. hmu if you wanna know more. FKJGHDFKHGJ that went on for awhile, she was wildin and she settled into her new home with her step siblings and step dad. 

Kylie is still very much closer to her dad than her mom but she loves them both, bouncing between houses and states (since her mom lives in NYC now) to hang out with each of them often.

CAREER

There was at one point where she wanted to be a soccer player like her dad but for a women’s team. although there were times growing up where she would definitely show guys she could kick their asses in the sport. she still can! 

When her dad found out what she wanted, he made sure and he worked with her everyday to make her a better player, EXCEPT, kylie overworks herself, A LOT, even when her dad didn’t schedule practices. it didn’t work out for her in the end because during a game she really messed up her knee where she had to give up the sport.

She was DEVASTATED, and she moped for about a day before she found something else, which was makeup. She actually rlly slowly got into it, watching tutorials, practicing on her lita’s, siblings, tia’s, mom, etc. By networking through her mom’s connections, she landed a couple of gigs to do makeup for a couple of backstage things and movie productions. she was getting around to a lot of stuff.

For awhile she was an MUA, and works with a lot of different people. she doesn’t care who you are as long as you’re chill, but then she wanted to try something different and went into music. She is step siblings to lennon james, and there is a lot of musical influence in her life, so of course she was going to dip into that. 

Her style of music is primarily in spanish, targeting that market and since it’s being big in the US, she’s definitely one of the prominent artists since she’s one of the few born in America that makes this type of music. So currently she’s working out stuff with music, working on collaborations, and then doing things in other fields.

Kylie doesn’t believe in limiting herself, if she wants to do something, she’ll do it. She also very much loves to work with charities and going to marches for things she believes in, using her platform for things like that ... even if she isn’t the best person to look up to. 

PERSONALITY

kylie is literally F I E R C E. she’s got two types of personalities, one where she’s a home body and loves her family, will beat you in a quick game of soccer. she’s that bubbly girl with the laughter, sarcastic remarks followed by a smirk at the end of it

she is also that girl that when it’s time to work, she is scary. she knows what she wants, she knows how she wants it and she will get flustered when it’s not like that. she’s got a whole ‘that BIIITCH’ personality, like when she’s on the red carpet, she just has it going for her kind of thing.

but she’s a goof, and that’s something everyone will notice. she loves to make people laugh and smile. 

if you’re an asshole, those are her favorite types where she’s just drawn to those people. she really does love a challenge. 

A big thing for her is she is really hot tempered. talk shit get hit, is kinda her thing. if you wanna start an argument, don’t expect to come out of it without a scratch on you when you’re with kylie. she just has that mentality that if you don’t wanna talk it out she already has her hands up to start swinging.

Random Nightcrawler aka Kurt Wagner Headcannons (some Bamfs included)

Because I feel like it.

Kurt runs the official X-men Twitter account. It was started to promote mutant acceptance and occasionally alert the public to ongoing dangerous situations. Kurt does that, but it’s also become well known for having some absolute 🔥 memes.

Kurt’s room can get fairly messy thanks to the bamfs, but he’s still able to tell you where everything is. Need to borrow some stamps? Sure, there should be a sheet on the floor next to the back left leg of his desk.

Kurt wants to try cosplaying so bad but he’s worried people will just assume he’s cosplaying a crossover version of himself.

Kurt knows exactly how many bamfs there are and he makes sure to count them after every mission or outing.

He had a whole Pinterest board of toddler parenting tips to use on the bamfs.

Sometimes, after the bamfs have been particularly rowdy on an outing, he’s seriously considered getting one of this baby chain things daycares use.

Lastly, not really a headcannon but I’d love a humorous one-off comic in which Kurt loses a Bamf during an outing and searches all over westchester to find it. Meanwhile, the Bamf made its way into a random kid’s backpack. It and the kid become friends and it winds up in a hide-the-secret-pet-from-mom type situation.

she’s truly an unstoppable force with a lot of love for everyone, and such is perhaps why she’s most unsuited for the plastics. that doesn’t stop her from trying, though! she doesn’t understand why she can’t just get along with everyone - the school isn’t following conflict theory in that they’re all competing for limited resources, after all. there’s enough care to go around, and perhaps such is what better suits the girl to the greatest people you will ever meet. nonetheless, however, she enjoys the attention being a plastic garners her, and that is why she continues at it!

she’s an enigma. that is, of course, pertaining to the fact that while lola comes off as the dumbest girl around, beneath her surface lies an interior more socially aware than any would realize. she’s found a home in activism, be it that of combating racism, sexism, homophobia, or what have you. she’s little but fierce, withholding her passion for fighting for what’s right from the world because what does it matter what a dumb ninth grader thinks, anyway? lola goes along allowing the school to believe she’s a complete ditz because a) what is she supposed to do to fix that? and b) it’s always fun seeing people’s expectations get blown out of the water. her academics aren’t too shabby, either.

and there’s something to say lola is overly fixated on garnering the love of her peers. her dad’s always been so busy with the restaurant - and must we even speak of mom? - so lola looks to the school to get the love and attention she doesn’t get at home. such is why lola flirts with multiple guys, because what happens when the attention from one runs out? she just feels unwanted. despite this, however, she moves into this ideology under the guise that the boys she talks to are doing the exact same thing. if confronted with the reality of commitment, she’s not afraid to move towards a relationship! she just doesn’t like getting attached to someone not feeling the same way.

some of lola’s interests include cheerleading, volleyball, and baking. she’s pretty toned, despite her small size, and is a lot more powerful than she looks. not to mention that the uniforms are just so cute! and she knows her butt looks great in those shorts. her love of baking stems from always being around cooking, and, well, food. her absolute favorite thing to make is alfajores, although lola is also quite skilled with american desserts like brownies and cupcakes. any occasion she can think of, she’ll bake for it!

all things considered, lola loves acting a lot more experienced than she is, if only because she fears not getting enough attention because of her age. she’s a virgin, and while she may brag of any sexual escapades to friends of her age level, in all honesty she’s completely afraid of sex and really has no idea what to expect. lying about her expertise, in her eyes, shields her with a facade of knowledge, prompting herself to think that if she believes she’s experienced, what could go wrong?

lola is very appearance oriented, and thus is quite fixated on how she looks. despite what the show may have you believe, she does not dress like that!!! i have a pinterest board here that details her fashion with image examples. lola will very rarely be found in an outfit that isn’t pink; she views it as a comfort color and thus an extension of herself, as positive traits people see in the color pink are ones she tries to emulate in herself. she loves to wear skirts and absolutely views them as her favorite type of clothing. however, she isn’t against wearing pants or shorts. in terms of the upper half, she enjoys layering shirts, thanks in part due to the colder toronto climate that doesn’t always allow for spaghetti straps. paired with her pink is most often lavender or white. she loves heart buckles!!! a lot!!!!!!!!! and she thinks gingham is totes adorbs. stripes are also another beloved pattern. she also totally owns the lazy oaf x doc martens boots. her other favorite pair of shoes are her pink converse. in terms of makeup, though she doesn’t always wear a ton, she isn’t afraid to show up to school with extreme makeup looks typically saved for social media. lola thinks hearts are just adorable, and loves adding them to her look, whether its blush hearts or the milk makeup heart stamp. pink eyeshadow is a constant, despite being told that monochromatic looks can get tacky. add some blush on the nose and some highlight... well, everywhere, and some mascara, and she’s done!

and of course, there’s the whole sticky subject of her mom leaving. there are a few things lola forced herself into believing and embracing given such trauma, being: if she achieves enough, she will be worthy of love; she needs to push others away before they have a chance to leave her; and someone better will always come along to take her place. thus, a few of her fears include being abandoned by those who should be trustworthy, “normal” relationships, and letting someone in and getting hurt again. lola believes herself to be defective in some way, that if she were a good enough daughter, her mom would have stayed. hence, lola has some coping mechanisms she has built up to protect herself from potential abandonment. this includes maintaining shallow relationships, abandoning others before they have a chance to leave, closing down emotionally, becoming clingy and needy, becoming possessive of others, worrying that conflict will lead to the other person leaving, shutting down and creating distance when things get tough, becoming obsessed or paranoid and demanding frequent proof of someone’s love, not committing to anything, becoming a people pleaser out of a need to be accepted and loved, and putting the needs of others first so they will always feel valued. this then correlates with lola sharing her love with all of the cliques of degrassi, fearing that others may feel the way she does. alongside this, she believes being a people pleaser and thus beloved by the population assists in being accepted and loved, as why would people abandon someone they liked and respected?

Jungkook doesn’t know what he’s expecting to see when he looks up from the case of overpriced macarons and heartbreakingly golden danishes, but every other scenario is blasted out of the way by the shit-eating grin plastered on his best friend’s face as he joyfully clacks a pair of tongs together.

“No way,” Jungkook manages.

“Yes way,” Jimin says--joyfully--and clacks the tongs together once more. Jungkook groans.

“Why didn’t you tell me you got the job?”

“I wanted it to be a surprise! They called me yesterday and told me to come in at six this morning--it was a bit of an ambush, honestly. Also, you’re holding up the line. The usual?”

Jungkook eyes the case again, contemplating if he should deviate just to spite Jimin, but the temptation of his favorite is too much and he finds himself nodding instead. Jimin swiftly grabs a chocolate croissant and slides it into a paper bag, moving toward the register.

“Don’t be upset, Kookie. I’m sure it was just my extra customer service experience and the fact that I was actually on time to my interview.” Jimin smirks. “Also, maybe the fact that I’m cuter.”

“Hey--!”

“Three eighty-seven, please.” Jimin takes his card as Jungkook sulks. “Kidding, by the way. You’re cute. You’re the cutest. Any bakery would be lucky to have such cute staff.”

“Yeah, sure, hyung.”

Jungkook is still frowning a little when Jimin hands him the bag. Amelie’s is the only bakery on this side of the city that makes decent croissants and he and Jimin are frequent customers, or, were, until Jungkook really, actually looked at his account balance and decided that he had to cut back his daily pain au chocolat intake. He had his trembling hopes set on scraping by with an employee discount but apparently Jimin beat him to it.

“What time do you get off?”

“Three,” Jimin replies. “Meet you at the park?”

“Sure,” Jungkook says. “But you better bring quiche or I’m sending your new boss those pictures, y’know, the ones where the only thing covering your bits is a dollop of--”

“How did you get those?!” Jimin shrills, cheeks approaching the color of the red velvet macarons on the counter.

“I dunno, hyung, how do birds fly? How is the sky blue?”

“Out. Get out of my house.” Jimin stomps back to the next customer in line and Jungkook can’t contain his grin.

“Quiche Lorraine, please!” Jungkook calls as he leaves the bakery. He thinks he sees Jimin throw him a (not very) discreet middle finger, face still blazing.

He bites into his chocolate croissant, late May sunshine whispering down onto his shoulders. It’s starting to smell like warm berries, even in the city, and some of the college students have just come home from school to spend the summer scooping ice cream. Heat waves dance off of busy streets and the residential areas are lush with drooping, leafy branches, the kind that make walking through them feel like living in a pop-up book.  

Yep, Jungkook thinks as the chocolate melts the bitterness in his chest. Still good.

o - o - o - o - o - o - o

“So,” Yoongi begins while Jungkook digs into his hard-earned quiche Lorraine. “I have some good news and some bad news.”

“Bad first,” Jimin says through a mouthful of raspberry tart, just as Jungkook says the opposite. Yoongi looks between them and then pushes up his glasses.

“The bad news is that I’m moving to L.A.”

“What?!” Crumbs fly out of Jimin’s mouth, his explosion turning heads at the picnic benches nearby. “When?!”

“Two weeks.”

“Hyuuung...” Jimin instantly goes into pout mode, lower lip drooping. “That’s so soon!”

“Yeah, hyung, why didn’t you tell us?”

“Well.” Yoongi looks down, fiddles with the corner of their picnic blanket. “An old friend of mine got in contact with me and the whole thing was kind of time-sensitive, so...I just--you both know how hard I’ve been trying to get a place down there--”

“Of course, hyung,” Jimin says, suddenly mature, his eyes kind but smile a little lacking. He glances at Jungkook, quick, almost so Jungkook doesn’t catch it. “And we’re really happy for you. Aren’t we, Kookie?”

Jungkook nods despite the squeeze in his stomach.

“You’re gonna be amazing, hyung. Doing what you’re meant to do.”

He receives one of those rare eye-smiles from Yoongi, the kind that makes Yoongi’s mouth go all soft right along with Jungkook’s insides.

“Thanks, Kook.” Yoongi reaches for an orange macaron. “Now, since I’m moving out, I bet you can guess what the good news is.”

“A decrease in the number of DTPH?”

Yoongi scowls.

“What the fuck is DTPH?”

“Death threats per hour--ow!”

A lean hand smacks him at the back of the head and somewhere Jungkook can hear Jimin giggle.

“No,” Yoongi growls, “and it’s good news for you specifically, so you better shut up and be grateful.”

“For me?” Jungkook is interested now, still rubbing the back of his head.

“Oh my god,” Jimin says with a grin. “Yoongi-hyung’s moving out.”

“Yeah, so?” It’s Jungkook’s turn to pout, looking back and forth between his hyungs. He’s about to open his mouth to whine when he gets it.

“Oh,” he breathes, because Yoongi, the artistic genius that he is, likes to surround himself with other artistic geniuses, which means that he lives in a place that’s made for artistic geniuses, a place that Jungkook, for the life of him, has been pining after since his very first visit.

“My room at the Laurelton,” Yoongi confirms, “is going to be available. And since the apartment manager is in love with me, I have, ehh, maybe more than a little say in who gets to take my place.”

“Everyone is in love with you, hyung,” Jimin remarks, breezily, and Yoongi actually blushes. Jungkook ignores them.

“Wait, wait--so are you, like, offering it to me?”

“You’re still looking for a place, right, Kook?”

Of course Jungkook’s still looking for a place. He loves Jimin, and sometimes even loves living with Jimin, but after only four weeks of sharing space they’re both going a little crazy. And Yoongi’s not offering up just any apartment, no, this is an apartment with a waitlist that’s had Jungkook’s name on it for two years and counting.

“Yes.” Jungkook leans forward to grasp Yoongi’s forearm pleadingly. “Hyung, if you give me your room at the Laurelton, I will--uh...” Jungkook looks around for inspiration. “I’ll get you a lifetime supply of macarons. With Jimin-hyung’s discount.”

Yoongi scrunches his nose up.

“Who the hell needs a lifetime supply of macarons? I’m planning to die by caffeine, not by sugar.” He knocks Jungkook’s knee with his own. “I’ll try and get you the room, out of the goodness of my very pure and very massive heart. Provided that you don’t spread those pictures of Jiminie around--”

Jimin throws up his hands in disdain.

“Why do I even try keeping anything to myself anymore? What’s the point?”

“I won’t, hyung.” Jungkook locks eyes with Yoongi as Jimin grumbles into another tart. “You can count on me.”

“Good,” Yoongi says. He holds out his pinky. “Promise?”

“Promise,” Jungkook echoes, hooking his little finger around Yoongi’s and then stamping their thumbs together. “No blackmail nudes.”

“If you two are done negotiating my dignity, can I go? I was supposed to meet Taemin-hyung at the studio, like, ten minutes ago.”

Jungkook gets up and stretches while Yoongi collects the remaining pastries in a paper bag.

“Are you doing more choreo with him?”

Jimin nods at Yoongi’s question.

“Mhm. And it’s hard, so we’ve been practicing at practically every hour of the day.”

“Is that why you’ve been texting me at two a.m. to get McDonald’s? I’ve never been so underslept in my life.”

“Well, I’d stop texting you if you’d stop answering me.”

Their conversation blurs in Jungkook’s ears and he lets it, admiring the deep shade cast by a grove of trees by the street. He snaps a picture of it on his phone and one of the cottony clouds, too, filing it away in his ‘references’ folder. Oils for the trees and maybe watercolor for the sky, he thinks, picturing himself sitting by the window at Yoongi’s--no, his--apartment at the Laurelton. He’d start with the clouds first, taking reference from the photo only at the beginning before switching over completely to the view from his window. Then he’d sigh out onto the fire escape with his brush in hand and swim through the viscous liquid of the sky--

“Hey, Jungkookie.” Jimin is punching him in the shoulder, hair looking not too far off from the clouds in Jungkook’s head. “Leaving. See you at home.”

“Bye, hyung. Tell Taemin-ssi hi.”

“I will.”

Jimin hugs Yoongi and waves goodbye, leaving Yoongi and Jungkook watching his back as he heads off toward the bus stop.

“Need a buddy, Kook?”

“Sure.”

They start in the other direction, clouds melting down the napes of their necks.

My initial thoughts when starting this project were to research designed album covers to gather inspiration and thoughts on what my final album cover could look like. I looked at online images using a combination of Pinterest, Tumblr and Google images taking inspiration from graphical design and fine art ones. When looking through these designs I chose my favourites and added them to a mood board that I could refer back to at a later date as I progressed further through this course. I feel the selection of album covers I have shown different styles and techniques used to create them for example the fine art styles of Billie Ellish and Lorde covers compared against the type design of Ariana Grande and Doja Cat. Once happy with my research and mood board design I continued to do further research into Artists that have designed album covers of their own.

My first artist Kate Gibb has designed album artwork for various artists but has a longstanding relationship with The Chemical Brothers, her designs are very colourful, and I love the composition of the designs. My second artist Matt Maitland worked with artists such as Michael Jackson and Galantis, his designs very fantasy/space inspired using layering and collage is very eye catching and inspiring. Third artist is Roy Lichtenstein using an iconic pop art style of design which is very recognisable, I love his cover for The Fratellis it suits the genre and the band as a whole. Fourth artist is Jimmy Turrel a famous graphic artist and video director. His style of work using a combination collage, screen print and sketching. The bold bright colours really stand out and the tears in the paper from the layering of materials and often repurposes found images and graphics from different eras.

My fifth and final artist I chose to research is Banksy. I chose to look into Banksy because, I like his overall style in his prints and his message in the current climate. He uses his platform to send messages and promote certain subjects his most recent design being in support of the NHS. His use on stencils and spray paint create a eye catching combination, I like his technique used to create the album cover for Blur and his design worn by Stormzy to wear at Glastonbury.

After researching my five artists I decided to uncover more information about The Recycled Orchestra of Cateura a Paraguayan musical group, which my final outcome from this project is intended for. I looked onto their website to learn that the group use instruments entirely made out of garbage and that Cateura is built on top of a landfill site. Favio Chavez the groups creator began using the rubbish to create instruments for the children in the nearby neighbourhoods.  I found this very inspiring and due to the current climate with Global Warming I think it’s a great idea not only to recycle but, doing it in such a creative way. Looking into the band this way I can get a feel of the kind of print I’d like to create that would suit the targeted audience and The Recycled Orchestra as a whole.

Reviewing all my gathered research for this project I was confident enough to start working on some experimental designs and tasks set by my tutor. The first task to create collage design ideas in reference to Jimmy Turrel and his work. Selecting my favourite Stevie Nicks I gathered images from Pinterest to digitality manipulate then print to add to a collage design. Using materials from my home such as train tickets, receipts, newspapers etc I collected and ripped them to create raw edges. I created 3 A3 style pieces using various images and materials combined, my favourite design is the second collage I made just due to the overall composition and images used. I was more confident heading into collaging this piece due to my first design being more trial and error but overall, I liked how the 3 designs turned out. Although using the same techniques as Jimmy Turrel wasn’t enough and I didn’t feel like my designs referenced his enough which is why I did some further development and digitally edited images using Photoshop Camera, my favourite collage to intensify colours and to create similar compositions. Following on from the collage I created some type designs inspired by Jimmy Turrel using the same effect I did on the collage piece.

Looking at logos and type design I researched an artist called Alan Kitching who is one old the world’s most foremost practitioners of letterpress and typographic design and printmaking. I like how bold his designs are and the use of capital lettering in most of his designs, I also like how the type is printed and the background is white. It creates a crisp letter shape which is also eye-catching. I designed three different type design using stamps, ripped paper and washy tape and red acrylic paint which is my favourite print. I spent the most time on my last design and how it references Alan Kitching really well although my design is inverted with the background having colour and my text being white.

My third artist experimentation were logo designs inspired by my chosen artist Banksy. Initially I wanted to reference this artist by using real spray paints and stencil designs then upload what I’d created and then edit further digitally like I have done in previous experiments. Although I would have loved to have done this, the cost and also the space I currently have at home wouldn’t have allowed it. So instead, I used the initial digital logo I designed with spray paint lettering and an application called Painter to add more spray paint and watercolour effect brushes to create my desired effect and I’m happy with the outcome I created. If I had longer on this project, I would’ve love to use spray paint and stencils in real life.

My final experimentation task was to research and reference the artist Andy Welland. A visual artist using bright colours and experimental compositions. To reference his work, I used an app called Adobe Draw to create 3 separate designs. This was definitely my favourite experimentation task I had a lot of fun using this app and the use of colours and a sporadic composition. My favourite design is my second once I created, I feel this because, I became more confident using the app making use of layers, in app shapes and colour themes. If I were to create another design, I’d definitely incorporate image layers to add texture and depth. I enjoyed using the app so much I further developed my Alan Kitching research creating digital designs referencing him.

Looking into different artist styles benefited me within this project as applied some of these experimentations and references into my final outcome the Album Cover. Before creating final, my design dabbled with Canva creating 2 initial designs using my imagery taken at The Kelvingrove Bandstand. My tutor set us a task to gather images throughout the project initially I took photos of items you see every day to reference ‘The beauty in the Mundane’. These initial photos were taken on my daily walks and commutes. Whereas with the Kelvingrove Bandstand I felt related almost too well with the next task referencing words set by my tutor which were chorus, orchestra, piano, music, note, conductor, concert, jazz and loud. Although I took these words to literally, I like how my images turned out with the composition, depth of field and viewpoints from where they were taken.

Having my images, experimentations and experience with Canva I felt confident enough to create my final outcome my Album Cover. Already using my first hand images in 4 initial design already with my final cover, I wanted to create something different but, still use elements from these designs I liked with my final outcome. I liked my images facing the bandstand and of the seating area but, didn’t want to incorporate them as images having done this prior. I decided to print the image and draw over details using fine liner pen then uploaded it into Photoshop Camera to apply the yellow artist effect. Using letter frames on Canva to reference Alan Kitching I added the image to each individual letter to create the type for The Recycled Orchestra. I then added different paper elements and ripped effects to elevate the recycled/rubbish aspect to keep in reference to my intended audience.

Overall, I like both my front and back covers for my album covers. Throughout this project I’ve become more confident in both my analogue and digital designing. My chosen artist was Banksy but, I felt when using his using logo style which my imagery they weren’t very complimentary of each other whereas the type design referencing Alan Kitching I much preferred. I’m glad I looked at my different options and experimentations first as my initial album designs look very different to my final outcome. The overall composition to the design I’m very happy with I feel a little more shadowing around the title would help it stand out more but other than that the colours and different textures applied make all together an eye catching design.
