I’m a 24 yr old woman, unlabeled :). I work in the fashion industry and I am a very “fashionable” person, I love shopping (perhaps a little too much haha) and doing hair, makeup etc. I also adore just relaxing, reading a good book, listening to Lana del Rey or Mitski, taking a candle lit bath, picing flowers and having a picnic etc, I can however get a bit adventurous and I love traveling, and I try to go on atleast one trip a year and I would love to have a SO to adventure with but still settle down. I’m definitely a marriage girl, idk about kids maybe one or two? Would depend on SO opinion :). I really enjoy art, not just painting/drawing but looking at art and appreciating it, specially renaissance art. I love a good trip to the museum, art and historical (I’m a bit of a history nerd). tohru: not a surprise but baby girl loves home ec!! kind of has to work her butt off studying for her other classes, so she gets to enjoy herself and do something she’s naturally super good at in home ec. loves making little snacks in class for her friends and then sharing them at lunch. the sewing unit takes her fashion game to the next level. when they do a project where they take care of fake babies, she definitely ends up caring for half of the class’s infants like they’re her own. kyo is her partner and everyone teases them about it but she still has a really nice time and thinks kyo would be a great dad :’)) highest home ec grade of all time in their school

kyo: says his favorite is PE but it’s actually math. gets a 5 on the AP calc exam. tells no one but tohru, who then tells everyone and kazuma throws a party and kyo is Not Pleased. isn’t a great math tutor though because he can’t really explain how he gets his answers—he just Knows. checks tohru’s homework for her before she turns it in (read: fixes all her wrong answers when she’s not looking so he can see her huge smile when she gets a good grade back. only feels a little bit guilty). watches math tedtalks. nerd disguised as a jock

yuki: favorite subject is lit!! bullshits his way through class discussions and papers without ever actually reading the books because he’s smart and charismatic. has a premium account on sparknotes. favorite class specifically was one on ancient greek literature and epic poetry—spent the entirety of the class critiquing heteronormative readings of the iliad and taking the piss out of other students because “achilles and patroclus are clearly gay if you have eyes”

kakeru: …...i’ll be real he doesn’t like school lmao. senioritis personified. on his phone during classes constantly. laptop open playing world of warcraft or candy crush or neopets. could not tell you anything the teacher said in the last hour. doesn’t take notes because “i’ve got it all up here yun-yun…..” but doesn’t actually do half-bad on tests. only reason he does homework is because he can pretend to study with yuki while actually just flirting with him. if there’s one subject he doesn’t hate it’s history because he “thinks the fight scenes are fun” (yuki: “you mean world war 1??” “yeah it was exciting”)

rin: art! she takes several art classes throughout high school. really loves drawing and painting, but also really likes doing ceramics projects because she likes working with her hands :’)) does a watercolor portrait for tohru as a graduation gift but gets really flustered when tohru sobs into her arms over how beautiful it is. also secretly likes doing little doodles of her and haru—he sees them once in her sketchbook and will never let her live it down

kagura: says her favorite is PE and it actually is PE. goes ham for capture the flag, tends to play too rough when capturing and gets taken out of the game. only person who is actually good at volleyball so she is constantly spiking, setting, and diving for the ball all in the same game, while the rest of her team just kind of fumbles around and tries to stay out of her way. gets first place every time they run the mile even though it’s definitely not a competition. definitely knows her mile time even though it is not a timed activity

I know I have only finished one story, so this all feels a little excessive and pretentious, but I think I can also use this as goals? Is that cheaty? I hope it isn’t.

1) I’m horribly nerdy, so I love making references to, or riffing off, series I love. Eilonwy the Druid is based on Eilonwy daughter of Angharad daughter of Regat of the Kingdom of Llyr (down to the red hair, but my Eilonwy is a bit more ‘away with the faeries’ than Eilonwy of Llyr. I can still see her doing the “Taran Pig-Boy of Caer Dallben, I’m not speaking to you!” bit whenever she has a fit of temper). The plotline where G. Maximius arrives in hostile Briton territory is based on a few of Lindsey Davis’ “Marcus Didius Falco” novels, although I have yet to write the plot out, and also owes a debt to Rosemary Sutcliff’s “The Eagle of the Ninth.” Marie-Louise “La Temeraire” Des Moulins’ current protector is the Prince of Donnafugata--I love “Il Gattopardo,” even though the mid-Victorian period is definitely not one of my favorites. Last but not least, Alasdair is the result of me being a big fan of @danjaley’s McCarric Scenes! He was also originally conceived as a “Master and Commander” sort of character, probably closer to Aubrey than Maturin. (Perhaps he’s the Tuvix to their Tuvok and Neelix?)

2) I love historical stories, but I also want to avoid falling in the “pretty, white, and wealthy people in pretty clothing in a vague England-ish place all day every day” trap. People of color, LGBTQIA people, and disabled people were NOT invented in 1960, despite what some people would like to think, and they definitely had a much stronger presence in the history books than popular culture might depict. Not to mention that people could, did, and would travel quite surprising distances throughout history, and sometimes would return to their former homes with their new families. I definitely need to work on incorporating diversity into my saves; it’s one of my resolutions for the year.

3) I’m very, very into historical clothing; I’m not brave enough to actually wear garb, but I can at least micromanage what my Sims wear. Hence lavish descriptions of getting dressed and how they’re dressed, down to the buttons and fabrics. (Even if the actual images differ somewhat from the descriptions.) I think it’s fun, and also helps me get into the mood of the piece and into the minds of the characters--Philomena could be crabby because her stays keep poking her bruises after she fell chasing a hog, for example, and that could lead into why she picks a fight with someone. Alasdair could visit Marie-Louise while she’s doing her levee, and their personality clashes could shine through while he’s sniping at her as she’s powdering her nose and having her servants make her old-fashioned wig ever higher and fuller. (As well as “mother, I am a grown man, I’m not going in there until you’re decent!” Even if women did have guests watch them dress and do their hair, I don’t think Alasdair would care to see his mother if she’s not dressed unless it was an emergency. He’s more reserved than she is.)

4) I’ll be honest and admit I do have a bad habit of putting self-inserts into my stories. (You can probably guess which characters they are!) I’m not exactly proud of this, and know I ought to stop. It’s too easy for me to reach for the “awkward nerd” instead of the “bubbly coquette” or “scheming society matron” or “farm girl with ambition” when I’m trying to assign a personality to a Sim. I definitely need to step outside my comfort zones when making characters!

5) I like the Badass Bookworm trope--I’m not tough or intimidating in the least and tend to panic, so it makes me happy to think of the “absent-minded professor” actually handling a crisis or a fight well! I’m also fond of the “wild, sassy grandma” archetype, because I come from a long line of women who (to put it mildly) become somewhat eccentric as they age. Although I don’t think I’ve shown it yet, I also like the idea of very isolated people breaking their shells down as they get to know each other, whether it’s found family, romance, or something else. And “they’re cold and haughty and so reserved they’re practically a statue but they’re secretly very nice on the inside, they just need to get over themselves.” Oh, and I feel like every story ought to have at least one or two wildly spoiled and cosseted little dogs with bad tempers but cute little faces. (Unless it doesn’t make sense, such as living on a spaceship or before little companion dogs were a thing.)

Do you write fluff/angst/crack/general/smut, combo, etc? Why? I write fluff, angst and crack for now. They’re the three genres I feel most comfortable with so far. And they’re entertaining to write for.

Do you write OCs, X Readers, Ships...etc? X Readers for now, but I’m slowly moving to write for ships too.

Why did you decide to write for Tumblr? It appeared to be quite fun and I wanted to connect with more people who had similar interests as me. 

What inspires you to write? Songs inspire me most, and talking with fellow writers helps too!

What genres/AUs do you enjoy writing the most? Angst and crack, probably. I love writing for fake dating AUs the most.

What do you hope your readers take away from your work? That everything comes around and wraps neatly at the end. And it may not be visible at first, but I always appreciate when readers point out my foreshadowing specifically.

What do you do when you hit a rough spot creatively? I take a break from writing and let it come on its own. It usually works, and in the rare cases it doesn’t, a push from my inspirations gets me going.

What is your favorite work and why? Your most successful? My favourite work, and the only work that I feel like lives up to my expectations, is my Jungkook x reader fic titled ‘Someone Like You’. I like how I wrote it and got attached to the characters. My most successful work is likely the series, ‘Shoot Me’.

Who is your favorite person to write about? I love writing for all the members of BTS so much and it takes quite a lot of effort to not make every single story OT7 x reader, but I mostly end up settling for Jungkook, though I’ve been writing a lot for Hoseok lately behind the scenes.

Do you think there’s a difference between writing fanfiction vs. completely original prose? Well, there are quite a few differences. Fanfiction doesn’t always involve making your own love interests since you’d know the person you're writing for pretty well (like an idol), unlike in original prose. Though it doesn’t make fanfiction any less better. Both are great in their own ways, with little differences here and there.

What do you think makes a good story? The way of writing and how the voices of the characters are delivered. I find it enticing when that’s done in a good way and it always draws a reader in, so I try my best to follow that too.

What is your writing process like? Most of the time, it starts with a rough outline in bullet points about the main events, characters and personalities, etc, before I plan the details in my head because I’m too lazy to write them all down, and write away at a blank document until the fanfic finishes.

Would you ever repurpose a fic into a completely original story? I’ve thought about it. And I would, though I’d add a lot more depth and details. 

What tropes do you love, and what tropes can’t you stand? I love fake dating, yandere, siren, soulmates, childhood best friends to lovers and modern royalty AUs. I don’t think there’s any specific trope I hate. But I’ve read stories with a bully and victim turning to lovers and that one might be the only AU that irks me off.

How much would you say audience feedback/engagement means to you? Depends. If I’ve written the work specifically for someone, then that person’s feedback is more than enough for me. But I usually do like to have some feedback and it makes me very happy.

Do you think fanfic writers get unfairly judged? Sometimes. And by that, I mean, most of the time. I think the prejudice and bias is slowly dying down, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a large majority still judged fanfic authors unfairly!

Do you think art can be a medium for change? Definitely. In fact, art is one of the best mediums when it comes to wanting to make a change, doesn’t matter how big or small. 

Do you ever feel there are times when you’re writing for others, rather than yourself? At first, this was common. But recently, I’ve learnt to flow with the story and write it for myself, so I can see how it goes and where the characters end up. It’s a lot more fun this way.

Do you ever feel like people have misunderstood you or your writing at times? No. Not that I can think of, anyway.

Do your offline friends/loved ones know you write for Tumblr? Nope.

What is one thing you wish you could tell your followers? That I appreciate the time they took to read my work(s). It’s really encouraging and sweet.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers who might be too scared to put themselves out there? It’s okay to step out of your comfort zone. Success comes from trial and error and it’s alright to feel down when that happens. Writing is a journey, and it’s best to let go of all doubts as you progress through it.

Are there any times when you regret joining Tumblr? Not yet. Dare I say it, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made thus far! 

Do you have any mutuals who have been particularly formative/supportive in your Tumblr journey? My biggest supporters are @bangtan-dreamland and @rubinora. I find myself lucky to be able to rant to them since I don’t have anyone else to turn to.

Hello, lovely followers of script-a-world!

Please allow us to introduce ourselves! We haven’t had any sort of about-the-bloggers page available before, and now that we’ve added more to the team, we’re seeking to remedy that!

First of all, we call ourselves Pylons. What the heck is a pylon? Well, outside of this blog, it’s an upright structure for holding up something, usually a cable or conduit. When this blog was started more than a year ago (whoa), the group chose the word Pylon to describe ourselves collectively, as a fun little nickname. Whee!

Brainstormed: Hey there, call me Brainstormed, and you can find me at @thunderin-brainstorm. Any pronouns will do. I'm a student, illustrator, and world traveler. My home is in America, but I'm rarely there for more than a month at a time, so feel free to ask where in the world I happen to be! Worldbuilding has been my hobby for quite a long time and I'd love to give you some tips and tricks that I've learned, or take your idea and turn it on its head to perhaps show you a new perspective. The many projects I've developed have been lifesavers for me, as they allowed me to harness my Maladaptive Daydreaming Disorder and use it as a positive tool for creativity. Aside from drawing and daydreaming, I spend a lot of time biking, hunting for cool rocks and bones, binge reading any scholarly article that catches my eye, and memorising completely useless random facts that I spout at any given moment in lieu of remembering actual important information.

I have a deep and enduring interest in the history of the ancient world, particularly the ancient Near East, and I’m also a bit of a nerd for politics, which is helpful when it comes to worldbuilding. Wootzel: Hi, I’m Wootzel, or @wootzel-dragon! I use she/her pronouns. I’m a recent college grad trying to figure life out. My favorite thing about worldbuilding is making things as realistic or pseudo-realistic as possible, and finding a justification for everything. Sometimes, this is also my least favorite thing about myself, because it can make things very hard! But, it can also be really rewarding when I get things to work out in a way that I enjoy.

Floofy blonde hair. It is usually worn long but it is currently cut short with parts of it dyed forget-me-not blue. Tan skin. Brown almond-shaped eyes. Often wears a black toque/beanie, and has a taste for punk, grungy, and “woodsy” type fashions like leather jackets, plaid, distressed denim, etc.

Current outfit is as follows: Long sleeve black shirt with Canadian maple leaf design. Plaid overshirt. Ripped jeans, black socks and black boots. Fingerless black gloves. Single piercing on her nose, multiple piercings in her ears, and a forest green jacket with brown fur lining on the hood. Jacket is designed to make the wearer look like a wolf. This is Timber’s trademark jacket and her most recognizable article of clothing.

When visiting a new place, Timber will build or draw an inukshuk and take a photo of it to commemorate the occasion. She has been doing this since she was small, and she continues this ritual in honor of the loved one who taught her how to do this.

Her real name Tapeesa means “arctic flower” in the Inuktituk language, but most people know her as Timber. Earned the nickname ‘Timber’ from her father when she made a tree fall as a young girl due to her Wood elemental powers revealing themselves. Answers only to the name ‘Timber’ in his memory.

Really loves blueberries. She likes all food and eats like a starving animal but she gravitates to blueberries and blueberry flavored things. Her trademark favorite food though is blueberry pancakes with blueberry jam, as per her father’s recipe.

Inexperienced in actual combat, but with enough raw power and natural talent that exceeds even Raimundo and Omi’s Shoku-level abilities, Timber Wilde is cunning, powerful, creative, and above all, unpredictable.

Timber Wilde is also currently the owner of the Crown of the Monkey King, the most dangerous Shen Gong Wu in existence. What’s more, she is also the faithful and long-suffering servant, student and sometimes host of the evil that resides in it.

Create bioluminescent plants and fungi

Create armor for herself from plants

But the most important skill as Dragon of Wood she has is, above all, her healing abilities.

With the power to use the medicinal properties in her plants to heal almost any wound or illness, Timber Wilde’s healing powers make her invaluable in battle.

She also has learned one more technique from Sun, one that allows her to “borrow” another person’s power for her own.

But we can discuss that later.

WHY SOMEONE MIGHT LOVE THEM: Despite her many flaws, Timber Wilde isn’t that bad of a person. Deep down underneath her tough, nihilistic, cold exterior, she’s just a sweet, silly, mischief making teenager who just needs and wants a friend. She is a dreamer. She is an artist. Though she has long since lost faith in people she still has an eye for beauty and finds it everywhere in the world around her. She thirsts for adventure and wants to live life to the fullest and experience everything the unknown has to offer.

At her best, Timber Wilde is a lively, incredible, inspiring soul who is passionately devoted to everything and everyone she loves. She will go to the ends of the earth for anything and anyone she cares about, even if it costs her her own life.

WHY SOMEONE MIGHT HATE THEM: Timber Wilde is a deeply complicated person who has a lot of inner pain and fears. And like a certain other redhead, these feelings cause her to lash out at the world around her in less than ideal ways.

Timber lies. Timber keeps secrets. Timber can get very defensive when you poke past the casual front she tries to keep up and start asking her real questions. She has a loose sense of morals, and a survivalist mindset. She doesn’t reach out to other people. She doesn’t trust other people. In fact, the only person she puts her faith in is an evil entity trapped within the Shen Gong Wu she wears on her head. And because of his influence, her view of reality is severely warped.

She genuinely believes she has no real place in this world amongst other people. She genuinely believes everyone is out to get her and that everyone disappoints each other eventually and to make yourself vulnerable or to have faith in others is to invite hurt and heartbreak. And despite the fact that she holds her own needs and desires above everyone else’s, she thinks very, very lowly of herself.

She cannot forgive herself for past mistakes. She cannot let go of what’s already gone. She blames herself for the fate of her family and the untimely demise of the most important person in her life and this has taken a severe emotional and mental toll on her. And due to this loss, she has ONE goal in life that she chases after with all her heart and soul, and the way she tunnel visions in on her mission often means she leaves others to the wayside, though not always without guilt or regret.

Timber is....complicated. Like a wildfire, she burns and burns and burns, and each and every day she burns a little more out of control than before.

But fires don’t burn because they want to hurt people. Fires burn because they don’t know how else to keep from going out.

Timber Wilde knows her actions have consequences. But seeing no better options, she forces herself not to care. She lies to everyone, including herself.

But I think a certain someone, or two certain someones, can help her change.

so after sketching out the doodle for this post upon the request of the lovely @chiaroscuroverse, I decided it was high time I finally got started on something I’ve been wanting to do for a while now. Thusly, I present to y’all the first installment of my sketch series New Who Companions in (Mostly) Historically-Accurate Period Costumes! :D

So long story short, I’m a big ol’ fashion history nerd, studied a good chunk of fashion history in the Western world during ye olde college days, and sometimes I like to think about what our New Who companions might have worn if they wanted to go mostly-historically-accurate in their old-world adventures. Below are some descriptions of what those costumes could have looked like, and a little bit of the historical context surrounding the ensembles. Thanks for joining me on this sartorial nerd-journey! <3

So Donna’s original costume, while very pretty, is not accurate in any way; I can only imagine the designer was held back by some untold constraints (i.e. this costume is either constructed based on stylistic requests from Catherine Tate or it’s the product of executive meddling). Here, Donna wears a stola, i.e. a dress-like garment fastened with fibulae clasps and held in place with a girdle high above the waist. This garment would technically be worn by a married woman, to sort of show off her wealth and worth, but I figure Donna don’t give no shits about that, just give her the pretty dress already. She’s also wearing a palla, a shawl Roman women wore when going about their business outside. You would typically see the palla wrapped around the woman’s body to both accentuate her curves where desired, to hide her features when wanted (women might draw the hood close to the face to hide from unwanted male gazes), and to keep the material from dragging along the ground. The volume of fabric in the shawl signified a woman’s status; the more fabric, the wealthier the lady. Donna’s garments are fashioned from the finest material available, being linens imported from Egypt and silks imported from China.

So, finding solid details on how women dressed in this time and place was fun,* but I did my best to sort of piece things together into a design that would make sense given the convergent influences and the materials (cloth/fibers, dyes, equipment) available in the area at the time. Basically, you’ve got a tunic cinched at the waist, and a woven cloak on top sporting a Pictish-type design, and simple jewelry fashioned from alloys that were commonplace at the time. Bill’s brooch and belt would definitely be met with approval from the other ladies; only peasant-women left the house without a belt.

* It was not fun. It was frustrating.

Rose’s garments and hair are intentionally sculptural in design, inspired by a series of Roman statues built around the time the story is set (I figured it was appropriate given the book’s plot!). Here she is wearing half of her Fortuna costume, on her way to save the Doctor (obv). Typically, a not-yet-married woman would only need to wear one layer (as unmarried women were, shall we say, low on the priority list in terms of Roman fashion), but here, on her way to being immortalized as the great Fortuna, an exception has been made for Rose; Marcia’s servants have draped, wrapped, and pinned some very fine material over Rose’s close-fitting tunica. Rose is also shown with a mantle, for covering her hair in public. Both Donna and Rose would have had their hair curled using a calamistrum, or an early curling iron, which varied in shape and style, but in this case likely would have actually been made of iron, and warmed over hot coals.

Okay, so why did they make this look like a Halloween costume? It’s just, this episode clearly had a budget, the designer clearly did their homework, so who made what decision and where and when that led us to this? I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice Halloween costume! Like, one you would have to rent instead of buy, because she is le pricey. But I’m curious to know why the designer ventured so close to the actual periodwear without actually committing to it. Like the sleeves—the flare at the elbow suggests the overdress, or bliaut, is of French design, except those sleeves ain’t near big enough, neither in terms of volume or length. Sometimes these sleeves were so long, women would have to knot them to keep them from dragging the ground. If you don’t wanna deal with big sleeves for your action heroine, that’s fine, just go with a more English design, which forewent the exaggerated trumpet-shape in favor of something more subtle. The current shape just looks weird—like, it’s halfway there, but got tired and gave up. Then you’ve got the front-lacing on the bodice; this is a nope, and only enhances the Halloween/fancy dress look. Dresses would fasten on the side or in the back; if you were upper-class, you might be looking at a modesty panel to hide the lacing in the case of the latter. The hair is another instance of halfway-there; the top half is pretty good, with its center-part and the wraparound braid, but the loose bottom portion and the salon-curls are a big no-no. Curls weren’t really in vogue in the area at the time; ladies’ hair was worn long and braided, both to keep it out of the way and to show off elaborate styles. And last but certainly not least, why the heck is Clara’s circlet shaped the way it is? It’s like they took a necklace, situated it with a bunch of slack in the chain, and stuck it to her forehead using spirit gum. Would noble ladies have worn circlets/coronets at the time? Sure! Would they have been shaped (or stuck-on???) like that? Nope! The original ensemble is full of potential but it feels like someone somewhere along the decision-making process looked at the original, better design, said, “Eh, can you modernize (read: sex) that up for me?” and then this was born. Again, it’s not horrible, just, it could have been so much more.

So I realize there’s a class difference between what Amy wore in the show and what’s depicted here, but I figured the upper-class depiction made more sense, given the fashions of the other young ladies accepted into Calvieri’s school. (That being said, Amy’s original outfit still isn’t quite there; this shows an example or two of what a working-class woman would wear at the time.) On the right, Amy is wearing a velvet gown over a petticoat; even though the color and bodice-shape denote a heavy Spanish influence, the dress would have been referred to as a French gown due to its fitted shape. Were Amy to go whole-hog and give herself some true mid-sixteenth-century hair, the front would be short, and regularly wound into tight, compact little curls, while the back was kept long, for elaborate braids and updos. That’s right--the sixteenth century was technically full of mullets. Mullets everywhere.

I don’t even understand why the artist drew it this way. It doesn’t make sense, not from a costume history perspective and not even from a design/fudging-the-details-for-the-sake-of-modern-sensibilities perspective. (Also from a perspective-perspective; dude’s having some major issues figuring out how foreshortening works, but that’s neither here nor there I suppose.) It would actually be way faster to focus on what this gown does right instead of wrong. So, let’s see here: it has a lace collar, which was a thing. It has a structured, paneled bodice; also a thing. Full layered skirt, that’s good. And, that’s officially it. The rest of this design is garbage. Like, why the eff is she wearing a ruffle as some kind of low-slung belt? Is that supposed to be cartridge pleating? What century are those sleeves supposed to be from? (Do those outer sleeves even? Show up in any century to speak of, outside of my nightmares???) If you’re going to do a lace cuff at the end of the fitted sleeve, why not do it right (i.e. like the way they actually looked at the time, which was usually in a cone shape flaring out from the wrist to the elbow)? Why would the artist imagine that Rose would go to the trouble of pouring herself into this 80’s-teal monstrosity without bothering to do anything to her hair except for a ponytail? What the fuck is up with the fucking boob lace??? See, I know the artist can draw actual historically accurate outfits, because Shakespeare in this comic looks fine. His shit’s pretty accurate. But for some reason, when it came to Rose’s dress, it’s like the artist lost their goddamn mind. (Don’t even get me started on the jewelry and accents, not if there’s a loving god in this universe)

So Martha has herself a lovely heavy brocade gown, trimmed in sable, accented with soft leather gloves, and topped with a cartwheel ruff round the neck. (Don’t worry; I imagine the TARDIS only carries ethically-harvested furs, like they’re grown in a lab somewhere or collected after critters have had a long and prosperous life or the hairs are vacuumed up and reconstituted by some futuristic device, etc. etc.) Elizabethan sumptuary laws dictated that folks had to dress according to social class, so depending on what your social class was, you may not have been legally permitted to wear things like silks, certain colors, certain furs, and more. Fashion was such a surging industry and indicator of wealth that, at the time, you had higher-ups selling huge swaths of land in order to have the money to dress themselves as well as possible--it was seriously that important to be fashionable. Martha’s garments indicate that she has pretty high social standing, given the materials used. Also, she wears a pretty bitchin’ hat.

Yazmin’s dress sports a fashionably high-necked bodice featuring embroidered linen silk, topped with a standing collar and “wings” at the shoulders. The dark hues shown here were super-popular at the time due to a surge of obsession with melancholia in arts and literature. Yaz also wears a “Cavalier” style hat, accented with an ostrich feather. Her outfit is basically a riding-habit/hunting-habit, constructed with ease of movement in mind.

Setting aside my many issues with this episode’s story/plot, the bugaboos I have with Reinette’s original costume design in the show are relatively minor, and I imagine can mostly be explained-away with stuff like “this is what the BBC already had on hand” and “goddamn that’s pretty.” Both pretty salient points! But I do think it’s interesting that the designer(s) went the way they did--Madame de Pompadour was actually famously not in favor of glittering gems (actually, she supposedly donated palace jewels to the French treasury more than once to help out during times of war); she tended to prefer fairly simple pearls as embellishment, instead. She also wasn’t really into big hair; obviously the styles shown here on Ms. Myles aren’t exactly Marie-Antoinette-big, but they’re definitely more voluminous and modernized than the styles the real-life MdP typically sported, which usually consisted of a slight pomp and fairly close-knit curls framing the face. (It’s also interesting that Moffat wrote her with such a heavy innuendo for sex/romance, because rumor had it she didn’t really actually enjoy things in the bedroom all that much, instead preferring to pull political strings, promote the arts, patronize motherfucking Voltaire!!!, help design architecture!!!, and keep the king constantly entertained and distracted so he literally didn’t royally fuck everything up. She was a very busy lady! Also she like. Paid contractors and artists on time? Instead of dicking them over with “credit” bullshit like other wealthy patrons??? Sorry she was just WAY more awesome than the show gave her credit for!) Anyhoo, long story short, Rose and MdP are shown here wearing gowns and hairstyles that are heavily inspired by those worn by the real-life MdP wore in some of her many many portraits.

Do you wear glasses? I have glasses, don’t necessarily wear them all the time

Do you wear braces? I used to, but I developed root resorption and had to get them off early (spring of 2017) so now none of my teeth toouch except for in the very back :( makes it really hard to eat samiches (yes that’s how I like to spell sandwiches fight me)

What’s your fashion sense? so I don’t count most days as my fashion sense bc I wear athleisure ish allllllll the time out of laziness, but when I do make an effort I have two ends of things bc I’m androgynous. so on a day when I’m feeling more masculine you’re gonna see me in a sporty-type-look (spandex, just barely sagging joggers, a graphic tee, my gold chain and jordans, I usually pull my hair into a ponytail and lay my edges), but on a day when I feel more feminine you’re gonna see me in some tried-and-true type of clothes (cute shirt, leggings, heels, jewelry, makeup did, hair down and [hopefully] acting right), but on a day when I’m feeling in-between I’ll try to experiment or be “edgy” (basically mixing and matching or trying something I saw a celebrity do and thought was cute). regardless of any style I’m in, though, you’re always gonna see me with my nails done, whether that means I got acrylics on or that I painted them myself... just know. that’s how we do. and by we I mean me.

Dream job? oh SIS get ready for this: sooo I want to own my own business, known as LEAD Revitalization (L for Love, E for Equity, A for Advocacy, D for Diplomacy - these are the core values of my business), which aims to help revitalize underdeveloped and underserved ethnic communities in the US and around the world and fight against gentrification through implementing art of all mediums in or near historic locations in that community that is representative of the demographic living there (so if the area is a primarily black neighborhood, you’re gonna see art depicting black history and culture, and if the area is primarily Asian you’d see Asian history and culture). red trainer Oh-sung...delinquent. sort of wishes he could carry cuter pokemon but he's gotta put up a TOUGH ACT. doesnt like battling but good at it. his darumaka is his true bff.

blue trainer Insik doctor/rescue guy! nice dude, doesnt battle. always busy and likes oh-sung a lot. he loves cold drinks and cant stand the heat. loves the beach but loves really cold weather cant stand tropical beach towns. cant swim!

yellow trainer Namki traveling clown!! loves their pokemon a lot!!! is horrible at battling!!! just wants to have a good time. will take your things and their pokemon will also take your things.

green trainer Shingo a mess of a human being depressed as hell. just graduated college and is a station master due to family pressure. would eat nothing but top ramen and never clean if his pokemon didn't help him get up and feel good every morning. super city boy.

purple trainer Seigen a SPOOKY SNOWBOARDER. rarely is seen out at day, seeing him is like seeing bigfoot. not actually spooky but accepts this weird title people have given him. likes to camp out with his pokemon a lot. shy.

gray trainer Mija usually seen at the hotsprings. she likes to stay in the salt rooms and drink fresh sikhye while reading. retired, wife passed away but has three good good kids that visit her a lot. loves battling and eating tasty snacks that are bad for her.

trainer Tae really loves cute pokemon. plays with them all the time when he's not playing football. hold all of his pokemon and carries them around everywhere. loves soft things, scared of bug pokemon.

trainer Hideo, friends with Tae and Choki . takes baseball real seriously. chews too much gum and never shuts up. tries to make everything connect to baseball somehow. everyone usually ignores him.

trainer Choki, friends with hideo and tae super talented, very busy. lives with his younger brother. stern and wishes his brother would take his studies seriously. always wants to train but his friends never want to. paints in his spare time.

trainer Itaru, younger brother to choki, wants to be a contest winner with his pokemon. wishes his brother wasn't so serious all the time. loves summertime and jogging with his pokemon. enjoys ditching school and planting berries/flowers in his garden.

trainer Banri, trans guy. very competitive especially against miu. good friends with seigen. loves all kinds of fruit. dislikes fast food. wants everyone to know how good of a color orange is.

trainer Miu, trans lady. not competitive, just trying her dang hardest. always seems to beat banri in some way. has a crush on ryoko. sister to eita. best skier around, really dislikes the cold. likes to watch scary movies.

trainer Eita soccer player! blunt, nice boy. loves hanging around hideo cause he makes fun of him all the time. brother to miu, loves bragging about his sister. loves going to amusement parks and is the best at winning prizes.

trainer Ryoko super talented, the coolest out of the sports buddies. rlly nice and hard working. gets a bit nervous due to the high expectations set on her. everyone thinks she's cool but she's secretly a big nerd. loves collecting gashapon toys.

trainer Junko loves fashion. likes to dress in historical clothes and dresses her pokemon up the same way. terrible at gardening but wishes she were good at it.

trainer Jubei, brother to junko. also loves fashion, but just always wants to look stylish. recently became a kendo teacher. a bit stubborn, kind of tsundere. is perpetually annoyed that his sister can beat him easily in martial arts.

1. what’s one of your biggest regrets in life?

     One of my biggest regrets would probably be getting into kpop. LOL. Only because I really would’ve had a much more productive summer if I didn’t get into it but I wonder how I’ll be when school starts because ik I won’t have as much time to focus on anything other than school. 

2. if you were a time traveller, which era/place/historic event would you go to?

       Tbh the Victorian era seems really fascinating to me. I would like to try wearing those puffy layered old fashioned dresses and hear about all the political drama that was going on with Queen Victoria. I’m not really that into history but for some reason this was the first thing that came to mind.

3. what kind of person are you when it comes to music genres? pop, rock, indie, rnb, hiphop?

     I actually liked all those genres you mentioned except for indie and rock. 

4. how do you see yourself in ten years?

      In ten years I hope to be done with college and have a good steady job. Maybe even married or dating someone. 

5. which kpop song/artist have gotten you into kpop?

       EXO specifically Call Me Baby 

6. do you play an instrument? if not, what instrument would you like to learn?

       I don’t play an instrument but if I would like to learn how to play one it would be the piano.

7. what was your favourite subject in school? and your least fave?

      My favorite subject is psychology and my least favorite would be math.

8. do you prefer baths or showers?

       Showers 

9. think about your fave kpop group. which member do you see yourself in, in terms of personality or habits that they do? you can be one member or a combination of both!

       A member that I see myself in is Kai. I would say Kai because I get his sense of humor and I feel like the way he carries himself-offstage-is sort of like myself. Not the onstage Kai because that is lowkey a whole different person that is too spicy to even understand.

10. what is an ideal date for you?

      I feel like an ideal date for me would be at a amusement park. I just find the whole concept really cute and fun and overall, memorable.

11. what’s your funniest memory from school?

      I feel like I had so many funny memories from school but now that you suddenly asked me I forgot. Oh-wait, wait I just remembered one. So there was this kid in my trigonometry class who would wait until the end of class to play the Dora the Explorer theme song and basically twerk to it. It would be so funny because my teacher would look so awkward but since she was chill she wouldn’t yell at him and instead shake her head. (I realize that this really doesn’t sound that funny on here but the way he shook his hips with his hands on his head was hilarious)

Characters I liked in 2016: Hotaru Shidare

Hotaru Shidare is a young woman who nerds out about Japanese snacks, candy and the shops they’re in. She’s a fun character that dominates the cooler parts of the show. I like that she’s just allowed to geek about and I like her design.

I had a subscription to Daisuki and was looking for something other than Love Live:Sunshine, Cinderella Girls, and a couple other cool shows to watch because it kinda sucks when you’re not getting as many good shows as your other subscriptions. Dagashi Kashi I didn’t know about much and I caught it a little later. It really really was the Hotaru Shidare show. A lot of anime has this thing where an average/boring main guy (sometimes girl, but you run into that way more in manga I think?) gets a really interesting and more detailed love interest of the opposite gender. Depending on the show, this is executed well or can be very boring. One thing that makes this show entertaining is just how huge the gap between the main character guy and the woman the plot throws at him is.

So the anime starts out, and also features in the opening, with Kokonotsu Shikada working on manga and rushes into his father, You, trying to get him to take over their dagashi (sweets and snacks) shop. Then Hotaru Shidare shows up trying to recruit You to the Shidare company, a big candy company. There are hints that she looks like the woman protag Kokonotsu was just drawing. You will join if she can get his son to take over the shop. This entire bit is supposed to establish plot but the entire time Hotaru was a funny expressive character and You was silly. I kinda understand that Hotaru is the weird rich girl with money showing up in a rural town, but Kokonotsu is just extra boring to a fault. His father doesn’t have a lot of screen time, but is more interesting than him. They eventually introduce the childhood friend, Saya Endou, who is interested in him to sort of have a love triangle, but the romance angle just feels there because thats what a manga/anime has. Saya is also more interesting than the main character by just being naturally good at games and her brother, Endou,  is probably the only other character as boring as Kokonotsu. Swap the manga drawing out for being the pervy character and you get Endou. He’s not a super perv because there’s also barely anything going back to that manga plot.

But all that takes a back seat to the main topic of the show, the snacks, and the woman who really into them. Essentially she shows up and then does some thing related to a branded or historically important Japanese snack in a very energetic and entertaining manner. She mostly wears a detailed frilly outfit with a cute high waist skirt, pantyhose or stockings, and heels. This is anime, so someone dressed like that will just have fun explaining things and playing games. There’s some comedy in that, but for me it just made Hotaru interesting. The animation team had a lot of fun giving her expressions and keeping her as a silly person who is serious about dagashi, if a little naive.

She became one of my favorites because I liked that here was this fashionable woman who spent an entire anime geeking out about something she liked and was a weirdo the entire time. She was so much more interesting that she ruled the snack and candy explanations and everything else was forced back. Yes, it got fanservicey at times, but I still think a character like her somewhere else would be great. Her kinda casual lolita fashion helped her and they actually gave her different outfits to wear! I hope that if there’s more to this show down the road and that they do more good stuff with her.

Also, the ED is amazing.
