omg i cant believe after injecting himself with that serum thingy he turned into an etherial and went on a rampage and we only managed to stop him after great difficulty and leveling half the hallow including half of our AND his organs he BARELY survives after like 27 surgeries and even now is like a shambling broken excuse of a human being who's every move is excruciating but whos chronic terminal disease has miraculously disappeared with the caveat of even more extreme side effects of all the OTHER problems left after those 27 or so surgeries barely put him back together but at the very least his hallow navigation abilities have gone up 200% bc turns etherials have a different set of senses compared to basically other living thing (based on the fact that none of them are, technically, alive) and that turning into one actually, you know, has a lasting impact on your own senses perceive the world and therefore the hollows so the upper ups are like "go in and navigate for us" and hes like "okay" bc hero complex despite the few people who care for him in the world vehemently interjecting because this way he can help right? this way he's changing things, saving the world, becoming a hero? right? .right.?

issues w/ the octopath fandom, racism, and ableism

whats from the source

octopath does some racist bs quite frequently.

cotc (the mobile gacha) has an entire storyline filled with anti-indigenous and racist tropes.

the mainline octopath games have yet to design a traveler with curly hair, and frequently whitewashes the tan and dark-skinned characters in official artwork (compare these with the real ones; here's partitios official cotc splash art). ochette's hair especially is straight-as-a-ruler and silver. also worth considering eye colors. partitio is sad because his concept art had only one design where he's white and a couple even had dreadlocks, and yet his splash art refuses to match his sprite colors.

the beastlings... i'm white and have done more research on the tropes in cotc since i play it more, so while i did have thoughts of my own while playing, here is a better post i found that lists off all the bad choices about them.

also worth mentioning kaldena. one of the few dark-skinned characters in the game is a villain (and also has straight silver hair). other people have also broken down what choices in temenos' story around this were bad better than i could. i can't find a post with a quick search so if you want to reblog this to talk about it i will reblog/link it.

ableism. while i am a big fan of the autism-coding in the franchise, it's still true that there are a lot of jokes made in the games at the expense of osvald and cyrus (moreso cyrus). it's setting accurate for people to be mean to autistic people, but you're still supposed to laugh at "i guess cyrus isn't actually that smart!" which pushes the idea that autism affects intelligence and maturity. i think overall the autism representation is great (pspsps my essay) but it's definitely the source of some awful shit i've had to read people say about cyrus and osvald.

edit 1: friend reminded me of something i forgot that i only learned after talking to it about it a while ago: therion's story is actually really really weird in how it tries to frame cornelia and especially heathcote as helping therion when what they did is enslave him.

whats from the fandom

fanart whitewashing. there is a lot of fanart of therion and partitio with pale skin tones. there is fanart of olberic and ochette with significantly lighter/barely tan skin tones. i'm not going to find any to link because harassment and arguing is not the point of this post, but if you've looked through fanart you've seen it.

here's their skin tones blended. even with the highlights included, they're not white. i get it, their splash art is very ambiguous from the colorism, so if you weren't using the sprites: here's your new references.

ableism directed at cyrus and osvald. i've seen people complain about osvald's personality writing and then cite ptsd and autism symptoms, so many people call cyrus stupid, an idiot, or imply he is not mature. people assume/default hc that he is bad at adult activies. he is a thirty year old professor. it is his job to be mature, good with children, smart, etc. this is infantalization of an autistic character. it's a default assumption that the autistic man is below-average at adult functions.

infantalization of ochette. there are hcs and portrayals of ochette to be far less responsible and mature than she is in canon. she is the protector of her island, it is a theme of her story that she was forced to grow up more mature than everyone else. yes, she is funny, cheerful, energetic, but some fandom portrayals of her reduce her to just that, like she's a puppy. always being irresponsible, impulsive, etc. this matches to her dynamic with castti going from the sweet found family of their crossed path into "castti is the mother who needs to rein in this wild child"- and also consider how it looks to portray the only (consistently portrayed as) dark-skinned character as wild when she is responsible and mature in her story. similarly to cyrus, people tend to default to hcs that she would be bad at normal adult activities just because she has 'childish' traits.

what do you want me to do about it

eyedrop skintones from sprites or go darker for the guys who aren't white. consider changing their hair up, like using the concept art design for partitio. drawing characters of color differently from canon doesn't solve the racism in the game industry, but it is good practice for drawing poc and representing them more accurately.

don't... insult the autistic characters. there are things cyrus is canonically bad at that have nothing to do with his autism, like singing, but don't act like he's bad at everything that's not part of his interests. real people act how osvald does due to trauma. neither of them are two-dimensional in personality, they're written with nuance and a range of emotions outside of Being Autistic.

respect ochette more. are you portraying her as only silly or the savior of her home, or both? would someone who hasn't played ot2 know that ochette has overcome challenges based on your portrayal of her, or would they think she's a comedy relief?

learn about racism. learning about what kind of racist tropes are common in media and games helps a lot with recognizing it in other places, like the beastlings or kaldena. and most of all, learning about racist stereotypes and tropes makes you less likely to perpetuate them unintentionally.

putting the cotc racism essay down here so i can say that it has spoilers for Bestower of Power if you're a cotc player. it's different from the post i linked at the start; way more focused on just the anti-indig stereotypes in the villain's design.

the last thing i want to say is oh my god i love talking about this stuff so much. if you are confused about ANYTHING i talked about or want to talk about it more, or add your own experiences, or ask for recommendations, i love that shit. i made this because i believe most people who are really active in this fandom don't do this kind of stuff maliciously, and would benefit from just having a chance to talk about it. for some reason i am very into explaining/taking apart bigoted language, where it comes from, what it means etc. Please

What's the origin of your blog title? Well that’s simply because I got a tiny bit hyperfixated on the Neuvichili ship (Neuvillette x Childe x Zhongli from Genshin Impact) during the Fontaine patch, and that out of the 100 fics that exist for it, I wrote like, 65 of them? 😅 And since I posted them on anon at first, the neuvichili author name stuck.

Something you're bad at: Social interactions. I feel much more comfortable writing than talking and I have to plan ahead/brace myself for the smallest things, like checking out at the grocery store/asking a retail worker for advice, otherwise I get overwhelmed quickly.

The Foxhole Camp (All for the Game slasher movie AU)

WARNING -> Spoilers for All for the Game trilogy and dark themes (horror)

I GOT SO INSPIRED BY THIS FANART BY @kururusti, the horror atmosphere coming from that fanart gave me literal chills, I love it.

I just had a crazy idea : what if AFTG wasn't about sports and mafia, but was a 1980s/90s slasher horror movie?

I thought of this because when I was younger I went to a French Summer Camp called "La Renardière" (literally meaning something close to "The Foxhole") and also because I'm a big fan of classic horror movies taking place in summer camps, such as Friday the 13th and Sleepaway Camp.

So, my plot idea is that in this universe, all of the Foxes are not sports player, but summer camp councelors, and they have to take care of kids. And Neil's dad is a slasher coming after them (let's keep his nickname "The Butcher", it's perfect for a slasher).

My plot idea is that Neil is the son of a murderous man (who is not a mafia boss in this version, he's just some crazy dude with an axe) and he ran away with his mother because the Butcher tried to kill them (think of movies like The Shining). They're still on the run because the Butcher really wants to finish the job (not sure why tho I have to think more about it). Like in the original story, Neil's mother gets killed and he is still chased by Nathan. One day the Butcher attacks him in the forest and leaves him to die (well I guess Nathan thought he had killed Neil or something like that, but he was just badly injured and survived). The councelors of the Foxhole Camp find him wounded in the forest while doing camp activities with the kids and decide to take care of him. Wymack who is the person running the camp offers him a job there after he recovers from his injuries (and I 100% imagine Andrew taking care of his wounds ❤️‍🩹). The Butcher will somehow discover that Neil isn't dead and he will try to murder all of them.

Now I'll do a quick summary of how I imagine each character's role with pictures from horror movies to illustrate the vibe (I might do my own concept arts later!!).

Note that the gifs I picked are NOT actor headcanons, it's mostly characters or concepts that inspired my ideas. I'll give the name of each movie/TV show if you're interested.

Also, I forgot to mention, but I imagine this AU taking place in the 80s, with a similar vibe/aesthetic to Stranger Things.

As I said, the Butcher was originally after Neil, meaning that in that AU he has the role of the Final Girl. Well...Final boy? Let's say final babygirl. He is the character who knows the killer personaly and has a deep childhood history with them (like Laurie Strode from the Halloween saga). Like in the original, he is very secretive and pretends to be someone else because he is afraid his father might find out that he is still alive. He becomes a camp councelor with the other Foxes and loves to play Exy with the kids (Exy still exists in that AU as part of the camp activities). I also imagine that he has no clue how to take care of kids and is still oblivious af. I mean...imagine that guy looking after children it's the funniest thing ever. I'm sure a lot of them ask him about how he got his scars.

At first he doesn't tell the Foxes what really happened to him and pretends he was attacked by a wild animal.

Okay maybe I was wrong when I said Neil taking care of kids would be the funniest thing...ANDREW DOING THAT IS EVEN FUNNIER. I kinda imagine him to be like a councelor helping Abby Winfield in the Infirmary (and yeah he steals meds and alcohol). He still has his dark and mysterious vibe (and I kinda imagine him dressing in a similar fashion to JD from Heathers, hence my gif choice). He would also be the guy suspected to be the killer (like Eddie Munson in Stranger Things 4), because he still has his mental health issue in that version. I also think it would be interesting to keep the backstory he has with Aaron and their mother, except they end up in a summer camp and not in an Exy team (it makes even more sense for people to think that he is the killer because of the rumors he killed his mom). Most of the kids find him terrifying, but i'm sure most of them see him as a rockstar or living urban legend. As in the books, he really doesn't give a fuck about his job. He will also be the one to discover Neil's secret, and I want a scene where he directly fights with the Butcher. I also imagine a cute romantic scene where Neil and him will go swimming in the lake at night (i'll probably make a fanart of this <3).

Aaron wouldn't change much compared to the books, I just think he would be really pissed when people accuse his brother of being the killer (while not being sure himself that he isn't). He would often leave the camp without telling people in order to see Kathy (who doesn't work there at all), leading people to believe at some point that he might be dead. I also want a scene where he pretends to be Andrew (who is chased by people who think he is the killer) in order to save him.

Drake, who knows that Andrew is working at a camp councelor, will try to trespass the camp at night in order to get to Andrew. And well...I guess Aaron will kill him as well and it will add more tension within the group (as if there was not enough murders happening there).

NICKY HEMMICK

Nicky would stay true to himself: proud to be gay and flirty with the male councelors, even though it must be harder for him since this AU takes place in the 80s. I imagine to be the funny guy of the bunch, throwing one-liners at the killer. I think that he would be more invested in the job than Andrew and Aaron.

ALLISON REYNOLDS + SETH GORDON

(I almost wanted to put a gif of Allison Reynolds from Breakfast Club as a joke but well...It's Chris from Carrie, I'd love to see Allison with that haircut)

She would be the stereotypical bimbo, but with more personality when you get to know her. I think Seth would be the first one to die and it would impact her character development and make her wanna take revenge on the Butcher. I imagine Seth to be like the stereotypical jock, still a jerk. This time he is killed by Nathan's axe and not because of Riko. I don't have much more ideas for them yet, but I love to imagine that Allison starts as a typical bitch and then she learns how to survive and becomes a badass character (like Emma Mountebank from the horror game The Quarry).

I think that Seth would be killed while the two of them are...Well...Doing... what camp councelor couples do in 80s horror movies... Allison somehow manages to escape the Butcher and to tell the others that Seth died.

RENEE WALKER

I don't have much ideas for Reenee yet but I'm open for suggestions if you guys have ideas. I think her story would stay similar to the original books as well. I just love to imagine that she tries to teach Andrew how to act more friendly with the kids, and making fun of him when as fails miserably to be a sociable human being (come on Andrew, the kids are freaked out by your crazy medicated smile). I also think that in their freetime they like to hang out and throw knives on the camp's archery targets. She is probably one of the most loved councelors.

DAN WILDS

Dan is trying to do what's best for the kids. Her group would still be divided with the monsters on the other side because she is part of the ones who believe that Andrew might be the killer. She is sceptical when Neil tries to tell the Foxes that there is a murderer running around. Wymack puts her in charge when he has to leave the camp (not knowing that Kevin...well, you know their secret) and she takes that role very seriously, as the leader of the gang and "the rational one".

MATT BOYD

I think that Matt would often try to play the role of the hero, fighting the Butcher many times to protect his friends. I don't have much ideas for him either but I'm open for suggestions!

KEVIN DAY + THE RAVENS

In this version I think that Kevin has something to do with the Butcher too. I'm not sure what, but I'd like to keep the idea that he knows Neil from his former life as well. Maybe he was another victim that survived, or one of his relatives was killed by the Butcher in front of his eyes. In this AU the Ravens are camp councelors from a rival Summer Camp (Evermore Camp). Kevin used to be part of them but he ran away because they have questionable methods when it comes to taking care of the kids (Riko put that fucking knife down, will ya?). Riko would be a psycho bully and a minor antagonist. He would also attack the Foxes and use the Butcher's murders as a cover-up.

Kevin and Riko take the rivalry between the Foxhole Camp and Evermore Camp very seriously. They often battle against each other in events such as Exy competitions and Capture the flag. The Foxhole Camp is considered to be a shitty and dangerous summer camp while Evermore Camp is for rich kids (in a similar vibe to the rivalry between Shadyside and Sunnyvale kids in Fear Street).

THE BUTCHER A.K NATHAN WESNINSKI

Our slasher!! As I said before he would be obsessed with the idea of killing Neil and the Foxes in the most gruesome way possible. The chemestry between the two will be very personal, like most killer vs final girl dynamic in slasher movies. I'm sure he will have some second winds... As for how he will look I don't know for sure? I like the idea that he is wearing an Exy helmet, in a similar fashion to Jason Voorheese's iconic hockey mask.

3.0 Amphoreus thoughts [part 2]

**Spoiler warning** for everything from walking around the city up until right before that odd dream we have with the Stellaron Hunters. At this point I’ve already completed this patch’s full story so be cautious if I decide to allude to anything that happens later than intended if you haven’t finished everything yet.

Panic plant must be protected.

Sweet child I’m not from any city, I woke up on the floor in a space station. But so this means the heirs all know about other worlds existing and it’s not only Aglaea, right? Or maybe just the demigods know. And for some reason I get the feeling the priest they’re talking about could also mean March. I truly don’t know. At this point I’ll believe anything could be hinting at March’s past. Also, that bit about Aglaea’s threads.. yeah, that woman definitely has a huge control over everything here and I dunno if I should be impressed or worried.

Dan Heng trying so hard not to stand out by using simple words only to look like a complete fool in front of the locals. Truly a sight to behold and I’m taking great joy from it.

I don’t know why it happened, considering I haven’t played any of the older Zelda games, but when Cloud-Piercer was fixed and returned to Dan Heng, for some reason all I heard in my head was that little jingle that plays whenever you get an item from chests.

As much as I would’ve loved having the Trailblazing trio together for this adventure, just getting to watch us being a complete nuisance to Dan Heng is so much fun. He has the patience of a saint for dealing with our shenanigans.

This is gonna be funny to no one except for me but it was so late at night when I reached this part of the story that I thought we had said “babe, you’re talking to a butterfly” and I was caught so off guard that I almost choked on my mnms. I was like hello?? Calling 1-800-Ship, we’re calling Dan Heng “babe” now?? But nope. I was just delusional and super tired.. though I have no doubt the Trailblazer would call anyone such an endearing term. Catch me calling him that now too.

So they got the world wound web AND they got fanart. Amphoreus truly is something else. And good god, news travels around fast here.

This is the butterfly I’m going to need after all these missions are finished. I managed not to get too lost with all the lore in this patch, but who knows how fried my brain will be by the time we reach 3.7.

Nothing seemed out of the ordinary here and her expression seems totally fine, but for some reason I just had a gut feeling that something was about go wrong..

And it seems I had every right to be worried because the golden goddess decides to tie us up and start interrogating us about the promise we unintentionally broke.

And if that wasn’t scary enough, we got death reincarnate standing a few paces behind us, ready to move at Aglaea’s orders. I guess that is another thing that I found interesting after walking alongside Castorice a while ago; that the closer you would get to her, the more your vision would get hazy and your body slowed down.

Thank aeons we didn’t get red texted during all this questioning otherwise I would’ve really panicked. It was already bad enough that I apparently answered incorrectly twice.

Dan Heng.. listen to me babe, I make horrible decisions. You should really think about this entire thing a bit more carefully and have better judgement.

It’s bittersweet seeing how much of a chatterbox he is while the voice actor strike is ongoing, but I still enjoy all the dialogue we have with him. Also cute we’re still thinking of March in her absence. We’re really out here trying to enjoy the trip for the three of us.

Okay so I’ve seen a handful of people throw hate at Aglaea for the interrogation and execution threat to us, but she clearly states it was to test us. I honestly don’t find it as severe as some people are taking it. She’s out here trying to save her people from the end of the world when these two strangers show up out of nowhere and become a bit of a distraction. We don’t know her, she doesn’t know us. It’s only fair for both sides to be cautious of one another. Dan Heng pulled us aside several times to discuss important matters before finalizing any decisions made with the people of Amphoreus whereas Aglaea made us promise to keep the worlds beyond the sky a secret from her people. We’re all acting in our best interest to continue our journey and survive the chaos. Of course Aglaea would take some action when the promise was broken and rumors started spreading. Sure, the whole scenario was an unfortunate accident, and yeah maybe threatening us with death was a bit much on her part, but she’s definitely not as bad as people are making her out to be. Then again, I’m also someone who enjoys characters such as Jade and Ruan Mei so.. I dunno, it just takes a lot for me to truly dislike a character.

She may not be as kind as Jing Yuan or Asta when we arrived on the Loufu or woke up on the Space Station, nor as welcoming as Himeko when we joined the Astral Express, but Aglaea certainly didn’t want us arrested and disposed of shortly after meeting us like Cocolia did (surprise, I love our former supreme guardian too). She can definitely pull a Sunday where it’s all nice and cozy between us now and later on we hear threatening boss music, but for now I don’t think she’s someone to worry about. She’s willing to help us just as much as we are to her. There’s also so much we don’t know about her yet, so I couldn’t possibly begin to dislike her when there’s still so much story left to experience.

Mydei pursuing that throne so badly that it showed up in Nameless Faces and his ult.

What will it take for this man to show us just a little bit of affection.. ah, I know he cares though. He wouldn’t have saved us so many times if he didn’t.

Ohhh my heart, we’re both so dedicated to taking all these pictures for March.. I hope she likes them when everything is picture perfect again.

The friendly rivalry between Phainon and Mydei is something I’m enjoying very much, especially during that little contest they had to defeat the most enemies.

So that first fight against Nikador went all fine and well, but of course the mighty Mydei volunteers to stay behind and keep it occupied while we escape and gather more intel. A bit of a shame because I was hoping to see more of his moveset.

Oh yeah, all these map puzzles with us rewinding time, switching between past and future and that movable hand.. can’t say I’m a big fan of them. Sometimes it feels like I’m playing a shrine puzzle in Tears of the Kingdom and it’s great, but other times I feel like I’m getting so confused and lost. I may be a bit dumb.

Can you hear my crying yet because oh my god this is so adorable! Of course March is more important to us than the world! She deserves all the happiness! I won’t say much about it now but yes the very end of this patch worries me.

I don’t remember much while we were paired up with Castorice, aside from that one moment where the Trailblazer unapologetically snapped a photo of Oronyx mid-conversation, but this whole “mother” business is quite odd for a titan. It only started murmuring this after we brought out March’s camera which only leads me to believe there has to be some sort of connection between her and the titans somehow. Of course I can be completely wrong too, it’s a mystery what’s going on with March right now.

4. Fav character/subject that's a bitch to draw

I already answered this here, but I'll give you another. Lum/ine, Ae/ther, Ei, Xi/ao, Wan/derer and any of my other faves from any Mi/hoyo game that I play, because goddamn! Just look at their outfits! Back when I was still drawing fanarts for Gen/shin, I will die every time just from drawing the details of their clothing. But I was too down horrendous for Lu/mine to just give up on drawing her. So when I switched to drawing Sp/yFam fanarts right after, my art braincells are just "Thank God, this evil Gen/shin obsession has been defeated".

Not gonna lie, with them releasing Oro/ron and Sun/day so close to each other, I'm starting to feel the urge to draw them again...wtf djfbjsd Anyway, if anyone drawing Gen/shin fanart (specifically) comes across this by any chance, here's a lifesaver reference site that I used for their outfits. It made the experience slightly less painful.

14. Any favorite motifs

Motifs where there are opposites of light/darkness and sun/moon, but not exactly presented in a black/white way where you know from a glance which is the absolute good and which is the absolute evil. It's more of like ying yang, where there's "complementary and at the same time opposing forces" or that "in kindness, there's evil; in evil, there's kindness". I believe the gray blur where each of these sides converge is the best place ever to explore in fiction.

3. What ideas come from when you were little

The concept itself of making a comic! When I was around...I guess around 4th to 5th grade? Around ten years old or less? I remember drawing this comic of an original story I had back then. I think the setting is something like a historical drama in Ko/rea.

That's because even in the late 2000's and early 2010s, kd/ramas were popping off so hard in PH, almost every adult I knew were watching them. It would always play in the background whenever I'm doing homework or when my mother is tutoring me. The titles I can remember were Je/wel in the Pa/lace and Queen Se/ondok (<-OK I GOTTA CONFESS THIS ONE CHANGED MY BRAIN CHEMISTRY).

Anyway, my younger self got so into this original comic story, I probably ended up drawing up to like half a ream of papers? sdjfbjshvfshd It's all traditional drawings with short bond papers with just a shitty ballpoint black pen. I was ten years old(?), so it definitely looked not so good. It's a secret project so I'm the only one who knows about it and I also hid it under our cabinet like it's some lemon fanfic hahaha (it's more action, tragedy with a bit of romance) I think it's because of that bit of romance that I hid it out of embarrassment, also the papers were actually supposed to be for when we need to print something for school projects, so I think I thought I was gonna get scolded for "wasting" them. I'm not about risk myself getting whooped with either a slipper, belt or broom bro 💀💀💀

I think what happened after that is for when your art perception improves but ur art skills can't catch-up, so I kind of had an art block and wasn't satisfied with it anymore. Then I ripped the pages and threw the entire thing away dsjvfhdsfvshdf 🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿 I wish I didn't 🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿 I have no start point to compare my current art with anymore and I can't even remember the story or the OCs that I had in there anymore.

Anyway, I'm making up for it now by making comics seriously fr fr and I won't be deleting it even if a ten-wheeler art block truck hits me and runs me over.

This question made me look through the oldest fandom account I can remember, for possible old arts and it's actually so funny/embarrassing how passive-aggressive 14 year old me is. Someone commented "I don't like this ship! This character is only mine!" on a rarepair ship fanart I showed to the group and 14-year old me replied "I understand your feelings, but you're not his only fan so keep that to yourself next time ^_^" ajvfsghdcghsdcds other interactions are also full of haterism energy it makes me go GHURL STOP!!! 😭😭😭😭 THAT'S SO MEAN!!! Got an idea to write something about my overall thoughts on LoZ characters. The plan is to do the Zeldas from the games I've played at least, and maybe others too. Let's start from the beginning (though there's not a lot to talk about until a few games in). Thoughts on the character design will be mostly copypasted from posts from a year ago, because I like to have the whole thing in one post but not much has changed with how I feel about them.

Zelda 1 Zelda

Design

The original Zelda looks like a super generic princess that could be from any fairy tale. So compared to the later Zeldas who wear Triforce or Hyrule symbols or the “apron” thing which makes them instantly recognisable as a part of the Zelda franchise, the original looks pretty nondescript. However I still like her a lot and it always makes me happy if I stumble into fanart of her; I’m never not a fan of ribbons and overall her look is just so poofy and cute. And while she isn’t that memorable as a princess design overall, at least she does stand out next to the other Zeldas who sometimes get pretty samey.

The situation with the sprites in old games upsets me unreasonably much sometimes. The sprites are obviously super simple due to hardware limitations, but in a lot of cases it looks like there's zero connection between the character's in-game and promotional art work. Would it have been impossible to tell the promo artist to base the art on the sprite, like "you can draw any kind of princess as long as she has a red dress and long brown hair"?

Or speaking of the dress colour, I assume it's because of technical constraints but it is fun how her dress changes into the same colour as Link's tunic. Though it makes it more difficult to decide what her actual look should be when there's different versions, so maybe it's fair that the promo artist just did whatever.

Character

Nothing to talk about here as she only gets one generic line of text, though in her defense nobody else in this game gets any meaningful characterisation either. Hats off to the manga artists who gave her a personality, the badass Zelda from the Yuu Mishouzaki still lives in my heart.

Role in the story

In the actual game she has a very simple damsel in distress role. I guess it's nice that she did some active work to prevent Ganon's rise but I don't find it particularly inspiring to think about it since it's not really a part of the game experience or has any interesting characterisation.

i guess this my reminder that the internet is wide and vast and contains so many subsets of people that know nothing of each other... because the fact you don't know DREAM is SHOCKING to me but honestly? it makes sense. he's just REALLY REALLY BIG in the circles i frequent.

how to explain...

OK let's start by explaining mcyt stan culture. mcyt stands for minecraft youtuber, and there's a pretty large fandom for them, which makes sense when you remember just how big minecraft is. there's typical fanart of minecraft skins, but what people LOVE is SMPs, aka "survival muliplayer" minecraft worlds. basically, when a bunch of youtubers get together and hang out together in a minecraft world for a while, all posting seperate videos where they mine, build, engage in minecraft activites, etcetera. mostly these will take minecraft literally, but sometimes they'll sprinkle in bits of "lore" - players having feuds, fighting in wars, forming alliances. it's not that serious, just a way to make these long smps interesting.

that is, it WASN'T that serious. until the DSMP.

dream was a pretty famous mcyt, who really blew up for his "minecraft manhunt" series, where he tried to speedrun minecraft (by defeating the ender dragon) while his friend(s) tried to kill him before he could. with this mild fame, he decided to start a casual minecraft server with his friends, named the "dream smp", or dsmp, where they could get together and play the game on streams.

then he started inviting more youtubers on, outside of his inner friend circle. one in particular, wilbur soot, decided to start a sort of storyline, involving a country he made, where he would declare independence from the larger dream smp.

and, well. it went from there.

there's no way i can explain everything that happened on that server. so many storylines, so many characters, so many perspectives, SO. MUCH. LORE. the dsmp was the first smp to really revolutionize the idea of minecraft smps with lore, and they exploded onto the scene. a bunch of funny, already popular/up-and-coming mcyts, all interacting with each other and creating a story to follow, in the peak of 2020 quarentine, when everyone was online to see them?

yeah. dsmp pretty much ended in 2022, but its fandom is still alive and well, if a little diminished from where it was when the dsmp was ongoing.

dream is a youtuber with over 30 million subscribers, and a lot of them just enjoy his videos, but the FANDOM - the fans that seriously follow him, engage with him, and to some extent obsess over him - mostly comes from the dsmp.

but whatever about the dsmp. you're not here for that. you're here for the CONTROVERSY.

and oh my god... is there controversy.

first of all, his minecraft manhunt series? the thing that got him famous? a lot of its fame is based on the amazing, impressive, and straight up unbelievable stunts dream pulls during them, which have resulted in a lot of people believing that they're at least semi-manipulated, if not straight up staged.

but whatever- it's for youtube. nothing seriously wrong with cheating a little there.

but when he's not getting hunted down by his friends, dream does normal spreedrunning, which means setting a timer, submitting his run to moderators to look over, and trying to get on a leaderboard. it's decently policed stuff, and people take it very seriously.

and, yeah, he DEFINITELY cheated on that.

there's a lot of technical details that i don't fully understand and you don't want to hear about, but basically, some moderators did some math and found that some of the "good luck" dream experienced during a speedrun was so mathematically improbable that there was only a 1 in 177 BILLION chance it could have happened.

so they took the run down.

dream responded by denying all of their claims, accusing them of lying and bad math, and generally throwing a huge temper tantrum in front of the entire internet, before reluctantly admitting that he had "accidentally" cheated in the run.

you may be wondering how someone accidentally cheats. i'm wondering that too.

but that's more silly stuff. let's get down into the worse controversy, the one that sort of destroyed dream for the dsmp fandom besides the most devoted stans.

the grooming allegations.

multiple fans have seperately stepped forward and said that dream groomed them when they were under 18, taking advantage of his position as an older, wealthy, famous man to influence his fans.

dream has completely denied this, and the internet is, frankly, a little confused as to the validity of the claims (mostly pertaining to the fans' ages and if the conversations really "count" as grooming) but it's generally agreed that dream, at the VERY least, acted in a way that was inappropiate for a celebrity to act with a fan. whether this was intentional and malicious or just dangerous negligence on his fault remains to be seen, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth either way.

there's also a compliation of things that i'm not super familiar with - one time he started a one-sided rivalry with a fellow mcyt when he created another smp, i think accusing him of "copying" the dsmp? - but since this isn't an academic paper, let me reluctantly source "bad vibes" for the reason some people don't like him. dream has a history of just being kind of a huge asshole to fans and fellow youtubers alike, both publically and privately. like, seriously, the shit he posts ONLINE for ANYONE TO SEE is unbelieveable, and makes you wonder at how things are behind closed doors.

the reason why everyone's talking about him RIGHT NOW is because of something tommyinnit (another minecraft youtuber, "main character" of the dsmp, the one guy i will bestow the dubious honor of being a "stan" of) mentioned on an episode of his podcast. he said that in the past he was scared of making dream angry, and WROTE IN HIS DIARY not to piss him off, because it wasn't worth it. keep in mind, this happened when he was SIXTEEN. tommy said that as a now-twenty-year-old, he couldn't imagine treating a teenager that way, and jackmanifold, someone else who was a part of the dsmp and interacted with dream, said that he hated dream.

another part of this getting brought up is a twitter thread that happened awhile ago (i believe back in 2021?), where dream basically claimed credit for tommy's success as a youtuber, posting screenshots of GRAPHS (???) that "proved" that tommy owed EVERYTHING TO HIM (??????) which is just. frankly unhinged behavior. i'll see if i can reblog a screenshot so you can see.

ANYWAY, dream obviously saw the podcast and the (rightfully pissed) fans' reaction to it, and decided to react in the most emotionally mature manner: a post mentioning how grateful he was to work with people on the dsmp, "even if we don't see eye to eye", and releasing the DSMP WORLD DOWNLOAD. (this is basically a way to download the way the dsmp minecraft world looks and play it on your own version of minecraft, so you can actually explore all the areas where lore took place.)

keep in mind, this server imploded in 2022. it's been TWO YEARS of fans begging for the world download, and he finally brought it out as a publicity stunt to make everyone forget about him being an asshole. which, can i just say, as someone that's not an expert at pr? only makes it clear to me that he knew exactly how much of an asshole he was being, and did it anyway.

obviously, there's more to the story here (oh my god i could make a dozen of these posts about dream's position in dsmp lore ALONE), and a lot of stuff i don't even know about, because i don't spend all my time familiarizing myself with cc!dream lore, but this is a pretty concise summary of events. i hope you can now enjoy my occassional rbs of posts that mock dream relentlessly as someone who officially knows the drama :)

and I started to wonder — what media was the most inspiring for you? How did different fandoms influence you and your art direction?

I simply adore the range of different media that you post and talk about (like starting with scifi and ending with forest whimsy) but I feel like there are still some general trends in your artwork! How would you describe your taste(?) in art direction? Or perhaps it's something not possible to grasp and put into words?

First of all, THANK YOU for this question, it's really really touching that someone is interested in stuff like this. Also SORRY for not answering for so long, because you are right and this IS a difficult question, partly because I view my art direction and media taste as two separate things. If you want to hear more about...birds...and my thought process behind their development, I made a podcast about them after the second episode released. I'm making a guess that you must follow me somewhere else given that you know about my game, so, if you speak the language I won't name you can listen to my rambling in my vk group.

If we are talking about fandoms I think I was REEEALLY affected by Over the Garden wall and Gravity falls as a kid. As well as a bunch of horror stories, I think "pen pal" was the first horror story that made me fall in love with the genre as well as the concept of kids facing situations that even adults may find difficult to handle. I generally love child adventures that have a darker theme to them. This is present in my...birds...game only in emotional manner, BUT, both of my next games are going to be more direct horror stories, so I hope to play with this a bit more in the future. (Also my friend said that "the left right game" explains a lot about things that I like and write and this IS my favourite horror story of all time so...like, cmon, my next game is literally going to be a creepy roadtrip adventure and this isn't even the first horror roadtrip im going to write)

Tonally I'm really inspired by things made by Davey Wreden (the Stanley parable, The Beginners Guide), One (mp100, opm) and Toby Fox. I just love how these guys manage to create silly light-hearted experiences that are pack full with often times difficult emotions. This is something I REEEALLY want to achieve in my stories. Also the Beginners guide became a really big deal for me as a kid because of the way this game literally spoke with the player. Up until the last couple of years I viewed art solely as a way to reduce loneliness and feel a connection with other people, even through the screen, so my main goal with birdcatchers was to recreate this feeling of personal conversation, even if less direct.

If we're talking about visual style, I'm really inspired by Brecht Evens and Plastiboo, and I got into mixed media because of Чистотел in vk. I won't say that Im anywhere close to these people but they are very inspiring for me. Anyways - my current "philosophy" in art is that I want my pictures to have more air in them and also spend as little time on them as possible. This is easy for me in traditional art (for example these chalk thingies), but still not so much in digital, however you can see that I'm kinda doing the same unfinished line art and blurry colouring thing with it too.

I see so many people who like creating explanations about Hermitcraft/Life series, creating tons of lore and interpret relationships. Especially with Life series, because it's half roleplay server and has a lot of plot and stories potential. Do people remember their previous life? Do they die and reborn? Do they remember each other, do they have scars from previous death? All that lore stuff.

I'm just.. I don't know. I guess I'm not a big fan of more serious roleplay and don't really think about relationships between characters, or the world of Life series itself.

For me it's all just minecraft servers where friends can play and talk and laugh. When I watch Life series, I imagine not characters, but real people. When Scar is talking, I imagine actual irl Scar, sitting on the computer with microphone and talking with his salesman grin. They remember previous seasons and don't think about it as lore, they just remember good times from the past. And after an end of the season they all are in one big group in discord discussing, laughing and talking how they will edit the episode.

Basically, that's the reason, why I animate only funny moments and often draw the irl side of hermits. I would love to draw something more "serious" or create a dramatic amv and be a part of this fandom community, but sadly it's not really my vibe.

In their videos hermits talk a lot about their life and wifes and maybe children.

I remember when Scar wanted to ask something to Xisuma who was afk, Xisuma said, he heard Scar through the headphones across the room. And I imagine actual human Xisuma, his room, microphone, how he rushes through that said room to quickly join the game.

I actually think a lot about irl side of hermits.

I imagine Grian sitting in the living room and doing taxes. Impulse loads the dishwasher. Doc plays with Doccy and teach them about pigeons and sparrows. Joel's in a grocery store decides if he should buy more expensive cheese this time or buy the usual. Mumbo watching videos and procrastinating to go do laundry. Xisuma writes articles about new songs and having a little art block while creating his own music.

I drew irl Grian so many times lol. I really like the irl side of youtubers, they feel more alive.

I don't really know how some hermits (and other people) look, but I still try to imagine them.

So that's why I won't do any lore or angsty animatics. But I still like a lot of AU fanarts, if they are drawn really good or interesting.

So because of all that I feel a little bit outside of the fandom... Like, everyone are having fun, sharing theories, fascinating AUs, drawing cool fanarts for each others. And I'm like.. not into that, I'm sorry. I still want to talk to all of you! I just can't really contribute. So here are my lighthearted funny animatics with 0% angst and where people are nothing more than just good friends on minecraft server.

I believe, people like me don't really watch fanarts or animatics and don't actually know about this whole side of the fandom. I wonder how many of them are here on tumblr ot twitter.

1: I'm curious how Vanessa's ice works considering this au is underwater, does she still have ice magic or has it been replaced with something else?

And 2: how does the tale of queen Vanessa play out? I know some AU's slightly change the events and with the possibility of ice being out of the equation how did Vanessa destroy the village?

Hello! yes it's absolutely ok to ask me anything! (asks are always a delight to get, it makes me very happy to see people interested in my stuff!) And they're not odd or annoying at all, I get to ramble about Subcon now hehehe here we go

1: Well Vanessa's powers are the same as in she can freeze things and create ice. However it's a bit less intense as it's harder to completely freeze the entire body of water around you. It has much less effect than the base game, mostly just covering the surface of any structure she's touching/standing on with ice, and when the 'everyone dying' thing happens the only thing that actually gets covered in ice directly is the manor and the area around it.

2: Now you might be thinking if only the manor froze, how did everyone die? So first we're gonna have a brief fun science time :D

so here's the fun thing about freezing seawater: then it freezes, it releases salt particles to the water around it, which creates this extra salty, dense and absolutely freezing saline water. And when it interacts with nonfrozen, regular seawater it creates... you guessed it, more ice! (I'm not an expert on this stuff or anything though so take it with a grain of.....ʰᵉʰᵉʰᵉ salt) So what basically happened is that 1) the manor froze, 2) which made the entire area around it freezing saline water, 3) which met with the rest of subcon and dropped the temperature of it significantly along with creating a whole lot of ice everywhere. Which... probably wasn't the best thing for anyone living in it. I mean, imagine you're living your best life and all of a sudden the temperature just. DROPS. yeah I don't think your body is gonna react to that well (at the very least send you into cold shock), and I imagine it would be way worse for cold- blooded fishfolk.

other than that are changes not that important to the story (the prince's chains are different, stuff like that), aand that's about it! ty for asking and wishing me a nice day :D have a great one as well

Last but not least, Day 29 of the MCSMtober challenge was Festival. I know I’m very, very late to the challenge at this point, but I’m also super early for a very festive occasion coming up in 2025.

This game wasn’t the first thing that my young autistic self would be hyperfixated on. And, even then, I snuck onto my adult relatives’ computers to read people’s fanfics on fanfiction.net, watched people’s tribute videos and weird stuff on YouTube, and looked at their fanart on DeviantArt while it was still a useable site. But if it weren’t for this game, I wouldn’t have a reason to be posting on any of these sites I’m on.

Before this game, I wasn’t yet on the path to becoming who I wanted to be, but my life began to change for the better once I learned of its existence.

The first two episodes of Minecraft: Story Mode came out in October of 2015, back when I was 10. If I remember correctly, my first exposure to it was episode 2, Assembly Required. I remember my brother showing me videos of the opening Nether scene (where Jesse is going with Olivia), and I thought Olivia’s name was Jessie. You can probably guess what would happen in the coming months- this game took over my life and dominated 2016 and 2017 for me.

I’m not really sure how because I wasn’t really that much of a Minecraft-y kid. I remember being more into stuff like Kirby, Super Mario, and Ever After High, along with some Monster High. I think I remember playing just a little bit of Minecraft PE, but that was it. I’m not sure how I ended up being so invested in the adventures of Jesse and co. to the point where I shipped Magnugaard like a supercarrier and made a winged fanchild for them named Skyla, but I did. Did MC:SM get me more interested in Minecraft itself? Probably.

I don’t really remember much from 2015-2016. What I do remember is that in December of 2015, I wanted to roleplay a Magnugaard wedding with my brother, and I built a little wedding pavilion in my cousin’s Minecraft world when we went to visit them for Christmas. I also thought up, quote-unquote, “Minecraft: Story Mode- Updated Edition,” which had Skyla in it. You had to go with Lukas to find her. Magnugaard was also canon, and there were three minisodes you could unlock after you finished the main game.

In 2016, I also got into My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and while I have a guilty pleasure for the Equestria Girls movies these days, I… did this weird thing where I swapped the MLP and MC:SM characters to play out the others’ stories. For instance, I swapped Axel with Pinkie Pie, and… Magnus with Scootaloo. Don’t ask me how I came up with that. I also spent a lot of time on this online app called Builder Buddies, where I harassed a private town and annoyingly tried to show them the, quote-unquote, “magic of friendship,” because I thought they needed it. Even when they told me to leave them be. Then, I deleted my profiles and made new ones constantly, and even lied to people that it wasn’t me, but my brother. The whole time, I also lied about having an older sister, because I used my MawMaw’s phone to play with a second profile. As you can see, I was a complete and utter piece of crap back then.

Back to Minecraft: Story Mode. I also made a bunch of sisters for my OC Skyla, one of whom would go on to become one of my main OCs, Lena. When episodes 7 and 8 came out, I became attached to another ship, Harpvor, and wanted to roleplay a wedding for them with my brother. I also liked to write little stories and make drawings about Jesse and all of her friends (including Em and Ivor) living together in a big house… and I also had the idea that Ivor would sleep in a Haunted Mansion-ish coffin. One specific story I wrote was Christmas-themed and followed Jesse and Lena venturing through the mall to get presents for all of Jesse’s friends. And, I wrote a lot of MC:SM-related stuff in my copy of Dork Diaries 3 1/2: How to Dork Your Diary, which is one of those interactive books that asks you to write in it. Here’s an example of that.

At one point, I sent a letter to Telltale Games asking them to include Skyla and another OC called Lily in the next game, but thankfully, they never got it. It’s not like they would accept suggestions from an 11-year-old fan who hand-wrote a letter and colored her drawings of the OCs in crayon. Especially right when they were about to shut down.

I wasn’t expecting Season 2 of MC:SM to come out. Before then, I had an idea for an eight-episode Minecraft: Story Mode 2 that made no sense at all. But at the time, I was hyped for the remake of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga to come out, and I also couldn’t wait for each episode of MC:SM Season 2 to come out. Minecraft: Story Mode drove me into wanting to be a game developer, and so I took a computer class in 7th grade. I remember listening to the soundtrack before, during, and after I did my work in that class. That changed when Unikitty came along and made me realize I was more into cartoons, but still.

As I said, Minecraft: Story Mode was what made me realize that I wanted to officially start drawing fanart and write fanfiction more. I don’t think I would even be here writing all of this if it weren’t for me seeing @minecraftninjerkid’s MC:SM Rewritten fanfictions on Wattpad, and getting super invested in them. When I saw those, I realized that I wanted to have Wattpad, because I just had to tell them that I loved their work and connect with other people who liked the stuff I liked. Yep, Minecraft: Story Mode was my first official online fandom. This was what started it all.

MC:SM Season 2 was also a major inspiration for Broken and Frozen, my Unikitty fanfiction. If you look on my Unikitty OCs’ fake wiki pages on the @unikittybigbrightworldau blog, you can see that some of the characters were inspired by characters from the game.

Despite all its flaws, my heart and soul still goes out to everyone who worked on this amazing game. I loved it so, so much back then, and it still has a very special place in my heart now. It was so much fun exploring all of these interesting locations and meeting all of these characters. It was fun to see the possible outcomes of every choice. And even though people are prone to laughing at Reuben’s death, I still remember when it sent my brother into hysterics.

In early 2021, me and an old friend of mine decided to create a collaborative drawing to celebrate the game’s 5th anniversary.

The aforementioned friend never finished their part, and for personal reasons, we don’t talk to each other anymore. Below the Thank You, they were supposed to put the game’s logo. But my skills as an artist have definitely improved since then.

In my notes app, I wrote some other things about MC:SM to express my appreciation for it, based on a tag game that I saw in @minecraftninjerkid’s story, The Life and Times of Radki. No one had tagged me because I didn’t have Wattpad yet, but I did it anyway. I included them in my message when I posted this would-be collab to DeviantArt, and now, here they are again.

My favorite moment in MC:SM was when Jesse, Reuben and Olivia stepped out of the portal into Redstonia. The scenery and the music were so cool to me.

My moment of triumph was during episode 2 of Season 2, Giant Consequences. The strays were tough for me to beat for the longest time, but I could eventually do it.

I don’t really have a hardest choice because the choices in both seasons are all super easy for me. In my notes app, I wrote that my hardest choice was in Below the Bedrock, episode 4 of Season 2. It was hard for me to choose between bringing Radar with me or saving Fred’s people because I was nervous about what was going to happen in Above and Beyond, episode 5. Now, that choice is easy- I choose to save Binta and the rest of Fred’s folk.

My favorite characters? Ellegaard, Ivor, and Jack, as I’ve explained before.

My cutest ship is definitely Harpvor! I don’t ship Magnugaard as much as I used to, but they come in a pretty close second. In my notes, I also said that Radki was another cutest ship of mine. I remember really liking it.

I remember saying that Below the Bedrock was my favorite episode, and Season 2 was my favorite season.

I didn’t have any predictions for a possible Season 3 because I didn’t think there was ever going to be one. And from the looks of things, I was right. To quote my past self, “I’m thankful that those who keep the fire of the fandom alive gave me the guts to be writing this (and possibly care about me doing it).” I’ve heard about this Block by Block revival project that’s in the works, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out!

And, why do I love MC:SM? Past me said that it was because of the artistic approval that I gave the game, and that’s still true now. I still love the character design, the scenery, the music, and the voice acting. But I think it’s also because I’m a huge sucker for things with tons of characters and vast worlds with lots of locations in them. I found the game’s adventures through these places so much fun, and it used them and the characters to weave together an exciting story. For me, at least. Either way, it fed my happy little heart. It’s been a part of it since I was in fifth grade, and now, I’m a college sophomore. How time flies!

I’d like to take some more time to say:

Jesse, thank you for letting us guide you on your journeys through your Overworld, the Nether, the End, the Far Lands, through other Overworlds, and the Underneath. There’s a good reason why you’ve become a legendary, world-renowned hero. I agree with you a million percent when you say that teamwork makes the dream work, and that your strength comes from your friends. We’re all stronger together! It’s also great that different variants of you exist so that anyone can see themself in you.

Olivia, thank you for your intelligence and your determination. I can totally relate to you worrying about what others think of you, and I believe that many other people can as well. I’m so happy that you’ve had a boost in your confidence, and I REALLY wish we could have gotten to see you more.

Axel, thank you for being such a loyal, caring, and supportive friend, and for such a generous guy, too. I didn’t forget when you went out of your way to make Reuben a cute little dragon costume, or when you handed out cookies to your friends to lift your spirits. You’re such a selfless person, and I wish we got to see you more, too.

Petra, thank you for your loyalty to your friends and for your capability and daring nature. I know how it feels to watch old friendships fade, so I can understand your resentment in Season 2. I also understand how it feels to be a nostalgic person. My old friend loves you so much, and I definitely see why. Whatever you decide to do, I’m wishing you well.

Lukas, thank you for your kindness and your smarts. It’s great how, right from the start, you tried to keep things cordial and fun amongst everyone. You were always so polite with others, but you weren’t a total pushover, either. I’d want to read your books, and I think it would have been cool if they’d released a real version of your journal for us to read.

Radar, thank you for your bravery and hard work. You really came into your own as an adventurer, and you always stood by Jesse and the New Order’s side. I even consider you to be a member of the Order. I would always choose to have you be Jesse’s co-leader, or the leader of Beacontown when they leave. I have every confidence in you.

Ivor, thank you for your knowledge, your flair for the dramatic, your quirks, and your silliness. You must have a lot of guilt on your shoulders from what you did, but I’m glad that you were willing to redeem yourself. I’m glad that you’re on good terms with Jesse and the gang, too. You were also absolutely hilarious at times! When it all comes down to it, you really do care. We miss your VA.

Reuben, thank you for being the kindest and most courageous pig we know. You were there with Jesse every step of the way during their journey to defeat the Witherstorm. You picked them up when they were down, and at the end of the day, you saved everyone. We really miss you, little guy.

I’m also thankful for all the good guys, bad guys, and other guys in the game for being their amazing selves, and for the many people who worked on the game for being so amazing, too. You all put your hearts into something that was such a big game changer for me. No pun intended.

Will I do a tribute video for the game’s actual anniversary once it rolls around next October? You know I will!

Minecraft: Story Mode helped me to craft my own story, as those two shorts with Petra and Jack said, in more ways than one. I would like to thank @stirpicus and every single one of the other writers, designers, directors, and artists who came together to work on this wonderful game. I would also like to give my thanks to the entire voice cast for using their talents for it, and to Antimo and Welles for their beautiful soundtrack. EVERY SINGLE person who was involved with MC:SM in one way or another has my deepest gratitude. Everything you did led to something truly great. And the universe said I love you.

I would also like to give a huge shoutout to all of my fellow Minecraft: Story Mode fans and enjoyers, past and present. You guys are great, and I’m so glad there are still people out there who love the game as much as I do!
