Northern Lights WIP
Wasn't going to post a WIP for this painting, but tonight I was able to see the aurora borealis from my house, and the timing was sort of crazy because I had been working on this piece earlier in the day.
Part of me is considering adding some red to the painting because that's the color of the aurora I was able to see, but it would throw off the vibe a little bit
But anyways, painting features Astra and Ondolemar, and it's a moment from the story I posted for my wip wednesday.
^And here's a picture of the aurora I saw <3 A little blurry, but it was so incredible, and I also saw a shooting star while I was out there

You might be able to see it tonight, actually. I went to a place with no light pollution. Just take your Iphone camera and set it to night mode, and hold the camera still for about 10 seconds once you take the photo.

I saw the Northern Lights and I’m having an extreme emotional reaction excuse me
#I always planned on going somewhere else to see them#never in a million years thought I’d see them at home#it was like when I went to the Grand Canyon#I went because everyone hyped it up and it was on my way home#then I got to the grandview point#I climbed out to a pillar I really shouldn’t have#one lady was yelling about it the entire time#but then other people joined me#it was probably one of the most peaceful moments in my life#that’s what tonight was#profound peace#pure awe and wonder#a desperate wish that I also am part of those colors and swirls that inspire so much#I might not be much#but maybe the collection tells these stories#please don’t ruin them.#northern lights#aurora borealis#EDIT: I live in the east coast of the USA & I was roadtripping back from the west coast#which is why I mention stopping at the Grand Canyon#my sister and I roadtripped to get me there but we got snowed in at flagstaff and couldn’t go to the canyon#so I went on my way back#I had a whole national park tour planned#and I arrived 3 days later than intended specifically because of the Grand Canyon and Grabd Teton

#never got to see them before!!!!#was so cool#i was planning to go out and check but i wasnt even ready to do that when i went outside for a different reason and saw them#it happened earlier than predicted then never came back#so if i had waited to check then i would have missed them#it was actually visible to the eye just not as vibrant as this#i called my mom and brother out to see and it was super cool#we stood out freezing and watching#anyway rip if u missed them i feel ur pain bc i always get excited when there's a chance then miss them#and there's very rarely a chance in my area#its like twice a year maybe but i ALWAYS miss them#never got to see them before#northern lights#aurora borealis#this has been a shitpost

Cunoesse...... ohhhh... thinking about her never getting to have a full story because that's just the nature of her life..... thinking about her having to run away again because she might be punished for something she probably isn't even sure if she did..... thinking about her looking up and seeing the stars and thinking of the small happy moments she thinks of as home

So, originally, I wasn't planning on attempting to look for the aurora, because I knew I had like a 5% chance of seeing it with where I am, but I made the decision at around 9:30ish to walk out to a causeway and try and spot it
And oh my God. I'm so, so happy I did!! The photos don't even do it justice. The lights literally lit up the entire sky, turned the Moon yellow (which my phone refused to photograph right 😭) and covered the stars
I may or may not have cried
#the aurora borealis is very special to me because of my mum#she always talks about how she used to see it all the time when she was a kid; how sometimes it lit the ground green it was so strong#but I haven't been able to afford any sort of travel to go see it where she saw it#and I'm amazed that (to some degree) I'm looking at the same sky my mum looked up at as a kid#this means a lot to me :']#also a bunch of other people had the same idea as me so there was like ten other people with me!!#at some point it curtained and got SO BRIGHT and everyone just went silent#core memory that I wanted to share with you all#mel's photos#northern lights#aurora borealis#photography#mel's thoughts

#text#also this reminds me right#so there are some Types of northern lights and researchers are still discovering them and naming them#i am not good with remembering their names (i only remember steve who is a celebrity)#but one of the few times i have been able to see northern lights in denmark with the naked eye.......... we got a VERY rare type#discovered (and named) recently by finnish researchers#and i can hear you think: wow gilles that is nice! a rare type! you must have been so lucky!#but this type consists of tiny green UFO-like blobs#and.............. it is so opposite to the big swirly idea of aurora#that we just looked at these discs like ???? how do we respond to these accordingly#(i am quite happy with having seen them but it really caught us off guard)
