THE FUNNY OTHERSIDE PICNIC REVIEW/MINI-ANALYSIS

ok since no one follows me on here im gonna write my thoughts for Otherside Picnic so. spoilers yk. (this isn't meant to be serious or in-depth just my personal thoughts and experiences!)

TL;DR 9.5/10 One of the best things I’ve ever read. It has its issues but they're so small that it doesn't detract from the story. When the main issue is “It’s so specific in what it wants to do you’ll either really love it or not like it at all” you know it’ll be good. Please at least try it!!

I went into Otherside Picnic thinking “oh this is gonna be Roadside Picnic but with yuri” and to an extent that is what i got. but I think Otherside Picnic is. so much more than that. It's a deconstruction and rebuilding of a lot of themes and ideas Roadside Picnic suggested into one whole and uses being a yuri and its notable influence from Slavic literature as a backing to the main ideas of liberation, freedom, grief, and what it means to love despite our insignificance. which, reading that yeah no shit that’s how media works, but the specific way Otherside Picnic does it is so intense and so specific that I can't really tell you another series like it. I can state its inspirations and works in the genres it's in but I can't give you anything that is “like” Otherside Picnic because I don't believe that exists.

Otherside Picnic and Iori Miyazawa’s use of psychological and cosmic horror and sci-fi to portray the raw emotions love can induce on a person, especially someone who is very much traumatized and not used to the feeling of being loved or loving works so well you’d think all psychological horror is yuri (which... you could make that argument but I won't be getting into that.) I believe the main point Otherside Picnic is trying to make is that queer love is scary. The Otherside is supposed to be an escape for Sorawo, a place where she can run away and hide, but it ends up becoming the reason she opens up and finds her place in the world. Despite its use of cosmic horror, Otherside Picnic’s narrative feels exceedingly personal, and this is for its narrative as a whole, not just the interpersonal relationship between Sorawo and Toriko. It feels like it’s saying “No matter how big you think your problems are in the grand scheme of things they don’t matter and neither do you.” and even though that seems scary and depressing it uses that to portray so many positive emotions. The characters don't matter, the plot doesn't matter but despite that it keeps going. Love is the driving factor of the plot, not just queer love but the concept of love in general. Most of the characters in some way love each other, or they simply want to be loved. In my opinion nobody exemplifies this better than Toriko.

Toriko is an extremely interesting character. She’s seemingly an open and quite silly girl who's in over her head with trouble she can’t quite grasp and while yes, as a baseline that is true you very quickly realize that there's much more to her than just that.Toriko is a timid girl who is scared who just wants to love and have her love acknowledged but is so scared to commit to her love that she can end up seeming pushy and overbearing. She ends up not committing to her feelings for Satsuki which leads her to be the way she is with Sorawo. She just really doesn't want to lose her and at first ends up not really displaying much care for Sorawo’s feelings even though she very quickly starts to love her. She wants to do the things she couldn’t with Satsuki through Sorawo because throughout most of the story Toriko is grieving. She couldn’t handle the thought of Satsuki being dead and once she finally accepts that she is, she's able to start being able to genuinely love Sorawo. All she wanted was love and it took her a while to realize.

Other aspects of the story are less about love and more about how love affects us.It takes elements from Roadside Picnic, mainly, the insignificance of man and says “Yeah, you’re right about that, but I don’t care.” With this it builds up a narrative separate from Roadside Picnic that is about queer women finding a place where they are free from society’s and the universe’s indifference and cruelty. It’s a story about finding your place in the universe and loving who you are and the people around you, no matter how cruel life is. Otherside Picnic says that all it takes to be free is committing to yourself and who you love and not caring what the universe thinks.

In conclusion Otherside Picnic is a deconstruction and rebuilding on a lot of the things Roadside Picnic was about. It's about finding your place in a universe and society that is indifferent or outright hates you and learning how to love. Although love is a scary thing, especially as a queer person. Committing yourself to someone in whatever way, whether that is romantic or otherwise can feel like a task of cosmic proportion. Being free to do such a thing can feel just as hard as confronting an entity from another world. All Otherside Picnic suggests is to try fighting, for the people you love and for yourself because finding yourself and being free is all that matters. As it stands currently I believe Otherside Picnic is one of my favorite pieces of media ever created. It stands beside Revue Starlight and Undertale for me which are two pieces of media that legitimately changed my life. I can’t give it anything but my highest praise.

Top 5 DRA Characters

1. Akane

As far as supporting characters go, Akane Taira is certianly up there. She’s positive and very trusting of those she hold dear to, which is very heartbreaking seeing how she dull and empty she became at the start of chapter 3. And of course we have to talk about her mastermind personality. I think it is very shocking how someone so close to the cast, especially the protagonist could be the mastermind behind their killing game. It’s like Tsumugi done right! Not much has changed about her from her time with the cast, she’s just very unhinged and incredibly acrobatic to make all those leaps. Look at her go. I like Akane a lot out of the main cast and dare say she even beats some of the canon characters in most aspects.

2. Rei

Female and Better Byakuya. I’m kinda cheating here honestly this list is of DRA characters but I’m also taking into account her time from SDRA2 sooooooooo…..Rei. Like I said previously, obviously a female Byakuya, I mean she even shares some of the same sprites as him as well as the notes. A tall, smart, and stuck-up jerk who constantly berates the crew and doesn’t want to put up with them for a majority of the run time. Golly, where have I seen this before?~ The reason why she is so much better than her predecessor comes down to two factors. One, her growth comes from not finding the game boring or not wanting to participate like long legged lemon boy, but rather; “…..well fuck. These sentiments got to me. Now I have to help” And two, how she behaves when we next see her in other material, primarily SDRA2. She’s a lot more emotional and compassionate, even striking Tsurugi during that shit he pulled in Chapter 6. Like, let’s go girl! Yaaas! Get hiiiim! Queen shit!

3. Utsuro

I want to go more in depth on the masterminds at a later date, so for now I’ll just say I’m very on the fence about. There are some days I like him and some days I don’t. But I will say that the twist of the protagonist being the mastermind was done really here, and in order to get to the true ending, you have to go down the darker path which is a really nice twist and one I can’t say I could have done better.

4. Teruya

Also kind of cheating with this one but uhhh…sue me :/ Anyway, Teruya was one of the comedic goofballs right behind Haruhiko and Satsuki. Single brain cell trio. I also love his growth, from fighting with Haruhiko in Chapter 4 to wearing his goggles the rest of the game, that character design I love to see! And it carries over in the sequel too. Having Teruya be the one with the killing game experience is a neat concept, even if that aspect wasn’t used all that much. A shame what happened to him though(STUPIDFUCKINGPSYCHOCOPTSURUGIIHATEYOUIHATEYOU-)

5. Kanata

Kanata is a sweet girl, nothing more too it than that. But there ain’t nothing wrong with being a simple, polite, short cinnamon bun. And it really was a shame she had to go like that, I would have liked her to stick around some more. And I’m kind of interested to see what really was LINUJ’s intended purpose for her was……..y’know considering another character he made in the sequel, I don’t want to know actually, Nevermind.

Top 5 SDRA2 Characters

1. Sora

I want to go more in depth with the protagonist’s another day too, but let me just say that SORA IS AN AWESOME CHARACTER AND PROTAGONIST! HELD BACK BY THE FACT THAT SHE ISNT ENTIRELY CANON! SHE WOULD DO GREAT THERE! Ahem! …..Sorry. I love everything about Sora, her sassy attitude, her snarky comments, even hints of showing something darker within her. Sora is a top tier character in my book!

2. Mikado

Also want to talk more about him at a later date, but Mikado is my favorite mastermind! Hands down, bar none, literally beating all of the ones from the main cast! Revealing him right from the jump was genius, because then it was the cast constantly hating him and roasting him. He’s so wacky and goofy that for half of the game, you kinda forget he even is the mastermind. From his charming personality to his cool design and powers, Mikado Sannoji carries the entire game on his back along with Sora.

3. Yoruko

A pink haired love interest for the sassy amnesiac protagonist? Where have I seen this before?~ In all seriousness I think Yoruko’s cool. Her angry behavior and yelling at others can get old at times and some are even unwarranted such in Chapter 4 to Yuki, but underneath that facade lies a girl that is trying her best to protect those close to her after some many hardships in the past. Her relationship is Sora is just adorable and it’s crazy that after Chapter 4 and beyond, she’s the most sane person there. Yoruko may be a tsun-dried-tomato, but she’s the best tsun-dried-tomato Ive ever seen. (Can tomatoes be pink?)

4. Hibiki

Before playing the game: Oh wow, a bully character to the shy girl, again?! Oh geeeez! I can already tell I’m not gonna like her.

After playing the game: OH MY GOOOOD! IM SORRY HIBIKI SWEETIE! DID NOT DESERVE ANY OF THAT!

Getting right to it, I think Hibiki should have survived! Unlike Hiyoko who’s only character development relegated to a blink and you’ll miss it moment in the third chapter. Hibiki was trying from the end of Chapter 2 onwards, so why waste the actually, good, DEVELOPMENT?! I guess it is interesting to see a Chapter 3 with only one victim and two killers this time, but there was no need to drag Hibiki down with it. The general consensus is right, this was wasted potential. Go look up some Hibiki lives AU to ease the pain.

5. Iroha

Ahto-Bleh incarnate. Iroha seemed like the overly kind, ditzy sort of character made for comedic relief, and she is. But making her out to be one of the voids was pretty neat I suppose. It does set her up for some development to overthrow and turn her back Mikado to be with her friends and, …wait what? That, that didn’t happen…? ……GOD FUCKING DAMMIT LINUJ! So Iroha just stays this bratty, annoying, and fearful child the whole way through and learns nary a thing in the process. So I have to ask: why even bother?! Now you may be wondering, why is she high let alone top 5 if I have these issues with her. Well for one, I think she’s kind of funny with all her reactions and expressions, plus knowing the identity of one of the Voids in the group builds tension, and her drawing book has helped several times in trials. And it could just be me imagining a better character than what we actually received. Death to the author folks!

Hmmm let's say some mundane daily issues stressed them out and nothing too grand. Ofc 300% serious per usual:

Kamui - goes into full 🥺 mode and waits to be comforted by men. His stress reliever is crying in man's arms or overal physical + emotional comfort. 6/10 on healthy scale and 🌈/10 on gayness one

Sorata - meme it all away. Deals with stress via humor. King. 9/10

Arashi - looks like a type to bottle up. May try some hot tea and meditation so 4/10

Yuzuriha - has no poker face whatsoever, can't keep stiff upper lip to save her life. Will end up bawling her eyes to someone and getting comforted (not in gay 🥺 way like Kamui does tho). Maybe will have Inuki comfort her a bit. Effective overall plus she's 14 so 7/10

Karen - will bottle up and put up a fake smile :< also do some self-deprecating and self sabotaging thing like drug her teammates and go out to fight and die alone :< although her style rocks so 4/10 on common sense scale but 🔥/10 on vibes and sexiness

Aoki - idk rly, guess go to soap lady's hotel room one late at night. To chat with her about protecting kekais duh, ofc no funny business. Happy family man with ounce of common sense yes but can he resist the temptation? 9/10 on he should deal with stress via hooking up with Karen scale

Kotori - cries herself out and gets comforted by her brother or slips into insanity and wants to get crucified no in between. 5/10

Good boy Fuuma - deal with stress by comforting and protecting Kotori and Kamui. Especially Kamui tho, the more touchy feely they are the better Fuuma is feeling. 8/10 on healthy scale since bottling up but 🌈/10 on gayness one

Antichrist Fuuma - I can't possibly state here post will get flagged as explicit. But let's just say it has to do with all kinds of explosions

Subaru - he doesn't deal with stress in any productive way possible, he mops around, smokes it out or sufferes in silence masochistically. That's how 🤕 kinks got as bad as they are, king tried to repress them. Alternatively he deal with stress by wanting to be stabbed. If he dealt with stress by getting railed I would have given him higher rating but this way 1/10 for the masochism and every BDSM-5 mental illness

Yuuto - he fucks it out, no questions. 10/10, Subaru this should be your role model

Kanoe - copes with stress via being sexiest person ever, flirting with absolutely everyone and having sex every day. Also while having them government salary and not doing jack shit beside dreaming in dick throne and having ominous prophecies. Dream coping mechanism 11/10

Hinoto - lies for funsies and makes false false prophecies. She sends seals into death for fun and apperently has a thing for making Kamui's life as hard as it can possibly be. Zero coping mechanism she gave into her dark side but at least we've seen some hinoto-cest pics so for that 2/10

Kusanagi - idk about him rly he seems like most rational one? So something about spilling sorrows to the bartender. Idk let's rate it 7/10

Keiichi - only boy with common sense in this manga he deals with problems resiliently but actually talks about them. 9/10

Nataku - guess they go out and die?? 0/10 on any scale

ya$mina fadoula - i cant form coherent thoughts on her right now outside of my analysis so: "and yaz is pretty implied to have had trouble in her friendships (eye of the storm and evasive action exemplify it pretty good imo), and these repeated failures in friendship that adhd can provide. this would also give reasons to why she seems to have given up on friendship by the time she starts the series (because, well, with untreated adhd nothing is going to change, especially when you dont know what is wrong) and why yaz is so stressed about abandonment. its because this would provide a traumatizing pattern (meet someone > something wrong with me > they leave > repeat). this would be worsened by rejection sensitive dysphoria, the really fun thing where you feel debilitating emotional pain over perceived rejection or criticism. with the combined power of RSD, worsening abandonment issues, and general adhd emotional dysregulation, it would make sense for yaz to give up on friends because of adhd."

Man, wasn't expecting to see Jade on this list. Kind of a deep cut there. She was great though, I loved her as a kid.

Also I'm watched every series these characters are from, so I can actually do this list!

I like all these characters, but I definitely like some more than others. There are a few I haven't seen in a long time though, like Jade. Been awhile since I watched Jackie Chan Adventures.

Worst to best:

Sasuke: Dude was a prick who was only actually properly friends with Naruto for like, half of the Wave arc and the Chuunin exam, he didn't join up again until the end of the series, after he and Naruto had machoed themselves out. He had his complexities, but it just got grating to see Naruto put everything on the line for him when they were only actually friends for a month at most.

Satsuki: I really like Kill la Kill, but Satsuki isn't really as memorable and developed as most of the other examples on this list. I'm iffy on even calling her a deuteragonist honestly.

Catra: Sorry Catra. She's a very interesting and complex character, the audience really gets to know her emotional struggles and see her change and grow, but I have some frustrations with her as well that keep her at a lower ranking on this list. With all the stuff she pulled and the amount of detail we get into how she screwed over some of her compatriots, I really wanted a proper conversation between say, her and Scorpia and Entrapta talking about how she'd hurt them, what she was thinking when she did so, and how she'd changed.

Ron: I always liked Ron more than Kim, I felt like he was allowed to be more awkward and fun and struggle more to get better and to change than she was. It felt like he really progressed, especially with how he gradually got a better handle on his Mystical Monkey Powers.

Jade: I really liked her as a kid her age (which makes sense, since that was kind of the point). I don't know if I'd like her as much now, but I loved how spunky she was, how she'd stand up to the adults when need be, and was more competent than they gave her credit for - though she wasn't infallible and could get in trouble too. I'd consider her the main protagonist of Jackie Chan Adventures though, despite it being named after Jackie.

Alphonse: He's just so sweet and devoted, he and his brother make a great team. I especially love how he constantly sneaks cats in his armor XD. I'd hesitate to call him a deuteragonist though, I think Roy Mustang fits that better.

Homura: We're in the top 3 now. Homura's a wonderfully complex character with a fascinating arc, I love how in later episodes of PMMM we get this complete recontextualization of what kind of person Homura is, she's fantastic.

Zuko: ...do I really need to explain why he's a great deuteragonist? There's a reason his character arc is often held up as one of the gold standards in storytelling, especially for redemption arcs.

Adrien: Okay look. Zuko's the better character, no doubt, but this is about who your favorite deuteragonist is, and Adrien changes my brain chemistry in a way that Zuko doesn't.

Okay so Natsuki's repeat route thoughts

I played the first big chunk of it a few months ago and just finished it last night so some of this might not be amazingly accurate? But, eh. Generally, I really like it.

First thought is just

So much of what I had a feeling about with him was borne out in the game....I'm so happy!

It answers a lot of little questions I had about his character like, apparently satsuki comes out when natsuki takes his glasses off because his vision is terrible so when his glasses are off he gets confused and unnerved and that allows satsuki to take over. Which like, makes sense, I'm willing to believe it. The fake DID is still bad but. It's not as bad as the anime.

ALSO I had heard that the anime ratcheted up Natsuki's impulsiveness and energy but wow like. It really fucking did. So much of the game he's very calm, very much just doing what he wants but not like. Hyperactive, like he is in the anime.

Second thought is that. Utapri is good actually? Like okay. I give this series a lot of shit. It's so dumb in so many ways, so much of it doesn't make sense. But uh. That might be the fault of...well mainly the anime, shining live is actually pretty decent. But playing the game it's? Actually really well written? At least what I could tell from the translation app I used...the story is genuinely affecting, and the dumb stuff...sort of makes sense? Like yes, it’s still a little ridiculous, but it’s like. Ridiculousness you can suspend your disbelief for a lot more easily. Like, playing the game helps me understand why this series has lasted ten years in a way that watching the anime and playing shining live hasn’t. It may just be because I’m a sucker but I got teary multiple times while I was playing it, there was genuine emotion happening. With the anime, it was more like, yeah okay. I guess this is happening. Poking fun at it.

So anyway I love utapri all over again and if you can get your hands on the game and a free translation app that uses a camera to translate stuff (I used dear translate) please play your boy’s route, I promise it’s worth it. (Though a warning to any S-class people you have to play the respective A-class route first; natsuki for syo, masato for ren, otoya for tokiya. And cecil only gets unlocked when you play all of the routes. Which is. A pain.) I’ve seen some people around trying to do translations of the routes so support people doing that if you see them! The original games are genuinely really good, they��re worth the effort!

SDRA2 hcs with Rei and her s/o being put into the killing game instead of Teruya?

Ohh!!!! I’ve always wondered how things would change if she wasn’t “executed” by Mikado...

Obviously, Rei would lose her memories and not fully regain them till much later. Same with her s/o. So until then, they both work together to figure out a way to recover their memories (and save the other participants)

Everyone who tries telling them Teruya is dead is pretty much ignored, as they both believe he’s alive and will surely rescue them.

Rei is still her serious and cold-self, not too interested in forming bonds with her underclassmen (though she and her s/o are more useful in trials unlike Teruya).

Meanwhile her s/o would wanna talk to them, sharing what they can about the Kisaragi Foundation. They just figured it’s a good way to earn the class’s trust since their sudden appearance was suspicious.

Like Teruya, Rei tends to go silent when she seemingly recognizes the names of places (like Satsuki Land or Mitch City), and becomes almost...sad in a way.

The Kurokawa Shrine made her tear up for a moment, which her s/o noticed. But she brushes off their worries, unsure of why she got so emotional, and instead states she'll help everyone.

Idk if they would let Nikei trick them into locking up everyone in Babel Tower. But if they did they’d have a much easier time handling it together, though Rei seems unsure of herself.

“This is...i-it’s what Kinjo would do if he were here, right? Say I’m right, s/o.”

“....yeah.”

Rei dies in Ch. 5 and her s/o is devastated--especially when they incorrectly vote Iroha.

And they never truly get over it, furious when Tsurugi calls her death a “sacrifice for the greater good”.

Teruya would join them in the final trial, being just as outraged but never blaming Rei’s s/o for her demise.

17 January.

Am I okay? I feel like I'm falling back down. I never knew how much I like his presence until he's not there anymore.

Kagami was pretty sure he was in love.

But no one should take his word for it. After all, he didn't know the first thing about romance, so this could just be a stupid infatuation for all he knew, but he really couldn't help it. Aomine was... unreal. He was convinced that the Touou player wasn't human because how could someone be so dazzling? It didn't even matter that he had such a cocky attitude. If anything, it made everything that much better.

Because what was wrong with confidence when he had the skill to back it up? Besides, Kagami found that kind of sexy.

In fear of his own emotion, he hid.

Over the course of his second year, he slowly grew more and more distant from Aomine after convincing himself that this was for the best. It would be much easier on his heart if he never confessed, therefore he'd never get rejected.

That didn't stop him from pining from afar, though.

21 March.

Satsuki suspects that something's up but I really don't wanna worry her more than I already do.

It all happened too quickly and too suddenly.

Kagami was eighteen years old, attending the last year of high school in Seirin when he felt something was amiss. Initially, he ignored it, thinking that the sudden throbbing in his heart was just his imagination and he continued playing basketball. Interhigh was just around the corner and their first opponent was Touou, so he couldn't afford to get distracted.

However, the nausea persisted throughout the night. Kagami tossed and turned in his bed as he wondered what could possibly cause such agitation. Cold sweat ran along his back as he forced himself to get some shut-eye only to finally succeed at too-late o'clock.

Something was seriously not right, but he couldn't pinpoint what exactly.

1 April

I hate this. I don't know what the point is anymore. There's only so much that basketball can numb and I'm fucking hurting all over. I don't know how to reconnect with Tetsu and the others and I damn well don't wanna go to Kagami. Where is he anyway? Haven't seen him around lately...

.

Aomine wasn't there for their match.

And he wasn't the only one absent either. The spot next to Harasawa where Momoi usually sat was empty and the entirety of Touou seemed extremely distracted. Their focus was at an all-time low and they looked uncharacteristically distracted. Was it simply because of their missing ace? Kagami had a feeling that it was something else entirely. Judging from Kuroko's body language that conveyed discomfort, the redhead grew more certain that something else was gnawing on them.

No one wanted to tell him where Aomine was. They all simply turned their heads the other way and walked away, frustrating Kagami to no end. While he knew that they didn't look like the best buddies, he respected the other power forward. Kagami would go as far as to admit that he had a massive crush on Aomine.

Of course, it wasn't something he'd say out loud. In fact, instead of acting on it, he chose to stay as far away as possible. He figured that if he never showed any affection, he wouldn't have to get rejected. Better safe than sorry. Aomine looked like he was far from gay, so Kagami wanted to spare himself the heartache.

He knew he had no right to pry, but he felt like he deserved to know why Aomine didn't come.

13 May

All I do is hurt everyone near me even when they're just trying to help. Maybe it's better if I don't ask for help... It'll just be a pain in the ass. At the end of the day, it's my problem. I got no rights dragging other people into it, especially after what I've done. I'm so fucking tired. I'm so sick of feeling like this. If it wasn't for basketball, I... maybe I'd be long dead or something. Guess I'll have no choice but to keep playing.

Gone.

He was gone.

There was a deafening ringing in Kagami's ears when Momoi broke the news that Aomine had passed away. He had overdosed on paracetamol the night before the match. His parents were away on a business trip, so he wasn't found until Momoi broke into her childhood friend's place and saw Aomine's unconscious body in the kitchen. His skin was pale, deathly blue and icy cold.

Kagami didn't know what to say or how to react, so he only stood there.

He didn't cry. He couldn't.

11 June

I can't sleep. My head hurts. It's so pathetic but I feel so lonely... I still haven't told anyone, but I think I really should see a psychologist.

In the coffin lied Aomine's dead body. His silky blue hair was neatly brushed and there was no crease on his forehead. It was an unfamiliar sight for Kagami who could only stare at the man who would never again look at him with his electric navy eyes. Kagami would never again face him in a heated battle, would never again scream or be screamed at. There would be none of that infuriating lopsided smirk, that mocking laughter or the obsolete 'the only one who can beat me is me'.

He should be happy to finally be rid of Aomine's cocky attitude, but he wasn't.

Because it meant he would never see Aomine in his raw form, glistening in sweat and the joy of a child as he played the sport he loved ever again, nor one of his rare sincere smiles. There would be none of that husky voice haunting him at night when he only had his right hand as a company. Soon, the seat that Aomine occupied in Maji burger when they had dinner with the rest of the Generation of Miracles would be empty.

Kagami once again stared at the man who'd never again open his eyes. He looked so peaceful in death, unlike how he usually carried himself when he was alive and breathing.

And that was what hurt Kagami the most.

19 June

I can't do this anymore. No matter where I look, I don't see anyone who can help me. Besides, it's embarrassing to talk to them about this... shit. And I don't have money for psychologists either. Why are they so expensive? I sure as hell can't ask mum and dad because they'll end up grilling me about it.

In the months following Aomine's death—suicide, Kagami felt empty.

They found a journal under the man's pillow that detailed his slow spiral into depression. While he had his good days and things looked promising a couple of years ago when he finally regained the love of basketball that he thought he had lost forever, it didn't last.

He thought about all the missed opportunities that metastasised into regrets. There were multiple occasions when he was able to lend a helping hand, but all he ever did was chicken out. He was too scared of his own feelings for Aomine that he ended up running away.

Kagami wondered if he had talked more to him, he'd still be here right now. Maybe he was part of the reason why Aomine killed himself.

1 July

I'm getting really worried... The voices in my head won't stop. Earlier I had to call Satsuki just so I can talk to someone. I don't wanna worry her... I really don't. But between her and my parents... I guess I don't have a choice.

.

They said time healed all wounds, but Kagami started to suspect that maybe some wounds were simply too deep to ever disappear.

It had been too many years since Aomine's untimely death and he could barely remember the guy's face or voice anymore, but it never hurt any less when he remembered the arrogant Touou ace.

"Papa!"

Kagami looked away from the newspaper on his hand when he heard his little girl running towards him with glee. Her fingers were stubby and she was still unbalanced on her feet. The sight never ceased to warm his heart.

Despite living with his beautiful wife that he didn't deserve, Kagami never really truly let go of his past. He'd done well concealing it, but he knew that his wife suspected that something was up.

There were lingering what-if's spinning in his head. If he had asked Aomine for a one-on-one that evening, maybe none of this would ever happen. Maybe right now, they'd be living together with a child of their own. Or maybe they'd still be friends, rivals, whatever. 

Maybe if they celebrated their birthdays together, maybe if Kagami gave him that box of homemade chocolate hiding in his fridge for valentine's, maybe if they spent one more day together in Maji's, maybe Aomine would still be alive right now. Even if they ended up drifting apart or hated each other's guts, it would be much better than this.

It was stupid to wallow in regret, he knew.

However, the diary that Momoi insisted he kept burned a hole in the nightstand. It was a grim reminder of his failure; of his cowardice that cost him the one person he wanted to see smile.

What would he say if he were here?

Where did he go, seriously... it's been so long since we've last met or talked.

I guess it's the interhigh soon. Maybe I'll see him again then.

He didn't even know when he started to grow such intense feelings for Aomine. For years he searched, but could never really pinpoint the exact time.

"Kagami-kun, it's time to go." Kuroko gently put a hand on the door and glanced at his old friend with a pair of sympathetic eyes that turned even more mellow when he saw the worn diary on Kagami's lap. "Don't you think you've carried this weight enough?"

The redhead stared at the wrinkly paper before he put it neatly in his suitcase on top of his clothes. "I'll carry it to my grave."

"It wasn't your fault." Said the lithe male with a monotone voice, but full of sadness for those who knew him.

Maybe if Kuroko actually read through the diary, he'd change his mind, Kagami thought.

12 August

I really wanna tell him how much I like talking to him.

This is so stupid.

I texted him but he never replied. It's been 3 weeks.

Maybe he hates me now.

He knew that one of these days, he'd get himself in a pickle he'd never get out of. Today so happened to be one of those days.

Regardless of what would happen, he was happy that he had divorced his wife and she had the custody of their daughter. As for his friends... well, they'd live. Everyone knew what being a firefighter would entail. Lots of rescuing cats from the tree, fetching lost keys from the gutters, running into a burning building and in some cases...

Death.

Yeah, that was a thing too.

With a forced laughter, Kagami curled his head under his chest to avoid inhaling more smoke than he already did. However, all openings were sealed and he had nowhere else to go.

He really should've chosen another path. NBA, for one. By now, he'd probably be past his prime. 35 years old. He'd be retired with a lot of money. Definitely more than he would ever get by working as a firefighter.

As the fire licked the space around him and burnt wood toppling down from the ceiling, Kagami waited for the moment when one would crush him and put him out of his misery. Or maybe his friends would come in and drag him out.

"...gami..."

The redhead lied on his stomach, eyes glassy as he watched the building structure crashed down all around him.

"Oi, Bakagami! How long are you gonna sulk for?"

"I'm not sulking..." He mumbled under his breath. "...Ahomine."

Ah, yeah. That was what he sounded like. Low, husky and seductive voice that he couldn't get enough of.

"C'mon, let's play." Those lips upturned into a grin and even though the rest of his face was obscured by the light, Kagami could clearly see beautiful deep blue eyes and frown lines on his forehead. "You were the one who bugged me, so just get up already."

"You're not an early riser, idiot. Why are you so—" he coughed after a particularly nasty inhale," so eager..."

"Hurry or I guess we won't play. I'll give you five minutes."

"Five minutes? I'll whoop your ass in three." He snorted inbetween his coughing fit.

"After all that talk you're just gonna lie there? I know you only had like, 3 hours sleep, but I thought you've been looking forward to this."

He felt his eyes slowly closing.

"Daiki..." He heaved tiredly. A piece of wood fell on his thigh and he bit out a scream when it charred his protective gear. Even through it, he felt the deathly heat. "I—Argh!" He didn't even know what the fuck that was but he was pretty sure it crushed his left leg. "I'm sorry. I'll be there soon."

"Fine," The light slowly eased as Aomine's head blocked the source of light to create a halo. Tanned skin, boyish grin and eyes that were positively brimming with life. "I'll wait for you."

Yandere Sub AU (Fairytale AU) - Natsuki Shinomiya ver.

    Natsuki was a gifted man ever since he was a young boy. Every village he went to he received a king’s welcome as he was considered a genius. The boy was happy and full of bliss at the compliments and praise he would get every time he played a piece on his violin. The boy won countless competitions making his parents and teacher proud. With their smiles he could get through anything.

    The young boy was especially close to his teacher. Her encouragement was what kept the boy going most. He enjoyed her company and time as he would play for her. She was important to him. Actually the boy liked her so much that he even wrote her a song. That song meant so much to the boy.

    So to have her steal it and make a fortune off of his song. Destroyed him. He ended up forcing the memory deep inside him. Picking up a new instrument, the viola. He continued to play with her long gone. Another side of him taking root.

    This other side to the boy was called Satsuki. Satsuki was born from Natsuki’s pain and suffering. Ever since he was created he has always vowed to keep Natsuki safe and away from harm. So even as the boy grew up and ventured out on his own, he was never alone. Even though he didn’t know of this other side to him.

    The boy who is now a man works for a local restaurant in a village he has been staying at for a few years sometime after the incident. The restaurant is high class and he’s the leading musician giving them their entertainment for the night. He does this job continuously six out of the seven nights of the week.

    At first this job was well received and it brought in a whole bunch of people from different villages and towns all wanting to see the genius at play, bringing in a whole bunch of money for the restaurant and village. Yet within the recent years his popularity has gone down with him playing the same songs over and over again. Nothing new coming out of him anymore, making the people bored and tired. Still he kept the job and continued to play. The people casually enjoy his repeated pieces as they now eat and talk to one another above his playing. Still, the man is fine with this.

    Until one day there was someone new. Completely brand new as they entered the restaurant with their family in tow. The musician wore a smile on his face as he started another song. The new family being seated at the front center table. The person placed right in front of him smiled with excitement and wonder. They would only speak and eat when a song ended, or else the rest of their attention was on the musician.

    At the end of the night when the restaurant was closing the family was getting ready to leave. While he was putting away his viola someone came up to him.

    “U-Umm, h-hello Monsieur. Your playing was truly wonderful and enchanting.” The man turns to look at the person speaking. The person in front watching him play was complimenting his work.

    “Ah, thank you very much for your kind words.” He bows to show his gratitude. When he comes back up they continue to speak.

    “There’s something special about your music. It makes me feel warm and happy.” Not expecting those words he stares at them in shock. Then a flood of happiness bursts out from him.

    “That makes me so happy to hear.” It shows on his face and how he beams. The person becoming shy gives him a bow/curtsy before saying their goodbye.

    “I’ll come again tomorrow night. I’m excited to see you play again.” With that they walk off heading towards the people they came with, giving him a small smile before walking out the door. The man feels happy and light at their words. It’s been such a long time since he got any sort of praise for his work and he hopes he can continue to satisfy the next night too.

    That is exactly what he did. They came back again as they said and watched his performance as intently. By the time it was over they went back up to him to praise him.

    “Wow! It was even better to see it a second time! I’m just as much in awe as I was yesterday!” The musician is even more happy to hear they enjoyed it once again.

    “It makes me happy to know that you keep enjoying my music.” He’s ecstatic to meet someone like this. Again, the person curtsies/bows and promises to come the next night.

    This goes on for the whole week. They come in every night and then praise him before leaving. The only time it was different was when he interrupted their goodbye.

    “I’m sorry to bring this up… but I won’t be here tomorrow. It’s my day off.” The musician is sad as he tells them. This only makes their face brighten up.

    “Well, if it’s alright with you… perhaps we could spend the day together…? ... Of course if that’s alright with you! It is your day off after all.” When was the last time he spent time with another person before? It’s been a long while and he forgot what it was like.

    “Ah, I’d love to spend the day with you!” He’s happy, extremely happy as he answers them. Their face lit up with joy as they decided on a time and place.

    “Alright then. I'll see you there.” They smile at him before leaving. The musician is overflowing with such emotion that when he goes home for the night he does something which he never thought he would do again. Compose a song.

    In the morning he wakes up at his desk with half a song written. Excited for the day ahead of him he gets ready and goes to the appointed spot. There he sees them walking up to him dressed casually with a smile placed on their lips.

    “Hello again Monsieur.” They greet with their usual curtsy/bow. Saying his hello back he offers an arm out towards them to start their day together. They accept his arm and start to explore the village. The two of them are greeted warmly as the musician leads them around looking at shops and eateries.

    “This village is amazing! I’ve never been to one quite like it.” They look over towards him shining.

    “I’m glad you like it here, there’s so many amazing things here I have yet to show you. …Are you planning on moving?” The musician asks them with hopeful curiosity. The person beside him looks away.

    “W-Well, my parents brought me here because I was interested in this musician who was considered a genius. I’ve always wanted to hear him play because I too especially love music. So my parents brought me here as a gift, but we are to go back sometime this upcoming week,” their voice seems sad, upset. The man feels the same way too. The little bit of hope crumbling in his heart.

    “You came all this way… to see me?” The man asks also feeling joy by their reasoning. The person besides him makes eye contact once again. They nod their head at his words.

    “Yes… I’ve always wanted to hear you play since I heard about you. I can’t play an instrument, but I’ve always loved music. Every year for my birthday or a holiday I would always ask my parents to come here despite the three week trip it takes. Then finally one day they surprised me and here I am.” He’s amazed at how dedicated they were. Which makes it even harder for him to understand why you are going back so soon.

    “Can’t you convince your parents to stay longer?” He asks them almost in a desperate tone. They look away in thought for a moment before they are interrupted by some very loud whispering.

    “I’m impressed to see him out like this. He’s not really social right?”

    “Normally he’s at the restaurant and if not there his house, he never comes out.”

    “Doesn’t he play the same old boring songs all the time too? I don’t go there anymore because I’m sick of all the repeated trash he plays.”

    The three gossipers shake their heads in discontent, talking as though he wasn’t even there. The two of them end up stopping in their tracks, causing the people behind them to bump into him, knocking off his glasses in the process. Suddenly a dark aura overtakes the man.

    “Who do you think you are huh?!” The man is quick to go to the gossipers, stopping whatever chatter they were doing. He grabs one of them by the collar and yanks him up.

    “How dare you call Natsuki’s music trash when you’re the real trash here.” The man being held up is shaking and trying his best to apologize.

    “H-Hey N-Natsuki!” The person that was with him touches his arm lightly. He whips his head over towards them which makes them tense up.

    “A-Ah, N-Natsuki… i-it’s alright who c-cares what they think! I a-already know your m-music’s the best!” Yet still they get their words out. The musician looks back at the three before throwing the male in his hands against the wall.

    “I won’t go so easy on the three of you next time.” With that the three of them disappear looking for a place to hide. The man turns to look at the person beside him.

    “You shouldn’t be near Natsuki, you’re leaving soon and that will only bring him pain.” He goes and picks up the glasses from the path. He doesn’t put them on and instead puts them in his suit pocket.

    “W-Wait! How do you know if I’m going to stay or not! I might be able to convince my parents, or… well, I’m old enough where I don’t need to be with them anymore! I can stay here by myself if I want too!” Their voice is full of passion and determination. He looks at them before stepping extremely close to them. He grabs their chin to bring their face closer to his, studying it.

    “You care about Natsuki so much you’d let go of your family?” His intense green eyes studying every inch of their face for a crack, a lie. The person swallows a lump of saliva.

    “Yes, I want to stay here and listen to his music. Even if it is the same old songs I could never get bored of them! I’ll do whatever it takes to stay here!” Their voice isn’t shaky and speaks truth. Of course this man has been watching them from the start. Looking through Natsuki’s eyes to watch over the nicer man.

    He was hesitant about you. Thinking you couldn’t be trusted. Yet here you are giving up everything for him, Natsuki. An odd feeling was starting to float around in both Natsuki and him. Something so dark and dangerous that he wasn’t sure if he should let it take over.

    “Live with Natsuki.” Was the only thing he said before swiftly putting on the glasses, turning him back to normal.

    “Eh? Ah, are you alright?” The man now back to himself asks the person who is lost, confused. They snap out of their momentary confusion before smiling at him and saying that they’re alright. Relieved the musician notices how late it has gotten.

    “Is it alright if I escort you back?” He asks them which receives a nod. As soon as they get to the inn that the family is staying at they both say their goodbyes and goodnights for the day.

    “Well, goodbye Monsieur, I had a fun time today. I’ll see you tomorrow night.” They curtsy/bow to him.

    “I had a fun time with you today as well! Let’s do it again sometime.” He bows in response as the two split for the time being. As he watches them walk inside he gets a feeling of never wanting to let them go. That he should go up and grab them as tightly as he can.

    The next night the musician gets ready to play the new song he just finished the night the two went out in the village together. All evening he waits for them to show up. Except they never once made an appearance. This nearly breaks the man as the restaurant closes for the night without a single glimpse of them. As he puts his viola away for the night a teardrop falls down his cheek which causes him to take off his glasses.

    An intense aura surrounds him once again. His first thought is that they betrayed the two of them. Then he remembers yesterday and doesn’t think that’s like them at all. He moves quickly to go outside the restaurant and go straight for the inn. Outside the inn he sees a carriage getting packed up and people urging another to get in. Planted at the doorway of the inn is them. Tears are in their eyes as they refuse their parents coaxing.

    Finally one of them goes up to them and grabs their arm, tightly. This makes him go up in a rage. He goes towards them. Grabs the hand that’s holding onto them so tightly and yanks it free. Their eyes go wide as the parent gets angry.

    “They aren’t staying with you! We’re going home, come on!” The parent’s words are not the words he wants to hear, that none of them want to hear. The musician grabs the parent by the throat and lifts them up. They struggle to breathe as the person in the doorway looks on terrified. The man walks until he’s at the carriage. He throws them in and tells them to quickly leave.

    Without a moment’s hesitation they shout to their coachmen to leave. The coachman is swift and fast as they leave the inn, village, and them behind. The musician looks back at the one behind him once he knows they’re gone. He watches them fall to their knees. He walks and crouches down next to them. He reaches a hand out and strokes their head.

    “It’s alright. You’ll be with Natsuki and me from now on, protected so no one else can hurt you.” His words aren’t getting through to them. He doesn’t mind right now since they are finally Natsuki’s, Natsuki’s and his. That’s the only thing that matters right now. That they are finally where they belong. Forever by the two’s side.

   Natsuki has finally found someone again, someone who won’t betray him. You, who will stay by his side forever. Listening to the music he creates for you.

It had been an eventful year since Kagome returned to the feudal era. The first three months had been difficult without Inuyasha’s love and his added constant avoidance to talking about their feelings, but once they cleared up the misunderstanding with Satsuki the headman’s daughter of their… ‘engagement’, and the beginning of Kagome’s priestess training, things had gone really  realllllllllly  well. 

Inuyasha revealed to her he had built a hut for them if she had ever decided to return to him from the well. In his foolishness of thinking she desired anything other than a life with him, he neglected to share with her that he had built them a home. Kagome had been confused of course; he had stayed on the roof of her hut every night since she had returned or if it rained, he came in and slept on the other side of the room from her. She had questioned why he didn’t sleep in his own home… In bashfulness, he revealed he couldn’t be away from her… even if they were just friends. The confession still made her smile.

She had been grateful for their new hut he had gifted her—not that she wasn’t thankful for her first hut, but it was a spare. It never really felt like it was truly hers. Honestly it was probably because Inuyasha and her weren’t exactly sharing it. But, now that he had shown her their new home, and divulged his plans of the future with her, she couldn’t feel more at peace. She couldn’t wait to move her few belongings into his hut once she had seen it more thoroughly. It was more private than the one she was currently residing in because it was inside his forest. He had used some of the ideas from her future home—obviously, he had her comfort and well being in mind. Some of the framing, metal work, and shelving stood out to her the most. She wondered if Totosai lent a hand to him.

They had met with the headman the evening after they mated and received their blessing fully to be married. Satsuki had been… missing when they arrived. Haruki said Sango had escorted his daughter home but refused to listen to his words about Inuyasha. Kagome felt slightly guilty, like she misled the poor girl. She, more than anyone, knew what it was like to be in love with the half demon and him not love her back… or at least think he didn’t. Inuyasha had made sure to console her out of her guilt, telling her he never made eyes at Satsuki and he had not been unfaithful to the young girl whatsoever—Kagome was always his woman. He thought he had made it clear… If anyone was at fault aside from Satsuki, it would be him.

After they had moved all their stuff into his home in the forest, news had begun to travel around the village. Inuyasha had been overwhelmed by the support and respect they received for mating, as well as their upcoming marriage. No one knew of their night in the woods; but they did mention to the headman they performed the demon ritual to be bonded and married but would also respectfully want to bond the human way as well—especially since Kagome was training to be the head priestess of the village. Kagome knew that the villagers wouldn’t have been a problem, but then again, he never asked her for her opinion. He had been too afraid of total rejection or humiliation. All he could do was grumble and pout over her teasing. 

Months grew busy with the winter season approaching and they spent more time apart gathering, harvesting, and helping everyone prepare for the cold temperatures. Kaede and Miroku performed an actual marriage ceremony right before the first snowfall. It was quiet, small—much to Inuyasha’s preference. Only their pack was invited to the ceremony and while the village headman threw a banquet afterwards, Inuyasha found a way to ‘miss’ it. Kagome didn’t complain either—she couldn’t get enough of the way his mouth drew hot flaming desire from her. Honestly, since she hadn’t even had a moment to talk to Satsuki and didn’t want the drama—she just wanted to enjoy her mate and husband’s attentions more than talking to a young girl over her unrequited feelings.

As the weather began to shift, Inuyasha had become fearful exposing Kagome to the harsh winters that she wasn’t totally used to and Kaede had agreed. She had assured Kagome that Miroku and her could handle any duty that was spiritual or healing related for the time being until she got more acclimated. The dirty old bird also hinted to spending more time as husband and wife so she could get some grandchildren.

Kaede had gotten her wish—after three months of marriage, early spring, Kagome announced she was a couple moons pregnant to their pack. By later summer/early fall on her year anniversary she was showing noticeably. There was a more than obvious swell to her abdomen as she made her rounds with the older priestess and her very overly protective husband. She tried to ease his anxieties by allowing him to escort her around… but that didn’t mean it didn’t drive her absolutely insane. Oddly he wasn’t her biggest worry though. 

Shippo had been gone for most of the winter and came back in the spring but had begun acting strangely when he came back. He was nervous, fought with Inuyasha more than ever for her attentions, often grew extremely upset when they discussed adding onto their already fair-sized house, and often opted to stay with Sango and Miroku instead of them…

While Kagome enjoyed her alone time with Inuyasha, she still missed her loving fox child. He had been respective when they were first mated and slept in the spare room unless Inuyasha had to leave for an extermination; then she would sleep in his room with him. But something changed, right after Inuyasha recognized her scent of pregnancy.

“Kagome, are you tired? Do you need to rest?” Inuyasha questioned, hovering at her side.

“No, I’m okay—you let me sleep in this morning so that definitely helped from yesterday,” she smiled gazing into those beautiful worried amber eyes. She reached up on her tiptoes kissing his cheek and nuzzled under his chin to show she was still being submissive but didn’t need to rest. She had felt bad; she was rather far along with her pregnancy and they hadn’t been able to make love in fear she would go into labor early. They explored other ways to find release but even then, he was so determined for her safety and comfort, it was usually just her being pleasured. He explained to her multiple times how mate-ship worked—how it was his job to comfort, protect, provide, and care for her. His needs would always be secondary compared to hers.

“Kagome, child, I think our rounds are indeed finished for the afternoon. Why don’t the two of ye go pick some herbs and enjoy the nice day. I will come visit ye later for ye’s checkup, hm? I would like to examine your area and see if ye are any further along than yesterday.”

“Sure, thank you Kaede,” Kagome said with a bow taking her husband’s arm and proceeding towards the woods. She had begun having contractions last week. Very far and few between each one but when she was checked yesterday, she was starting to dilate. Last night, they started to come more frequently to where she had been struggling to sleep. Kaede had encouraged her to make rounds with her today to walk a bit, to speed things along so she didn’t have to endure another sleepless night. Inuyasha had begrudgingly agreed—only to help Kagome be out of pain quicker.

“Inuyasha?”

“Hm?”

“Have you noticed Shippo is acting… I don’t know… kind of strange lately?”

“Not really—just like a male demon who can’t be close to a female who has been mated,” he gruffed.

“I don’t think it’s just that though…” she said stopping in the middle of the road.

“What then?” he asked concerned. “Kagome?”

“I just… feel like I’ve done something to upset him…” she said trembling.

“Uh-uhm-Kagome! Don’t cry! I-I’ll talk to the runt, ok??”

“I-I can’t help it,” she said leaning into his chest crying. Not being able to get in closer to him upset her further until she was in full hysterics. Her stupid bump made her cry harder! She was done being pregnant, emotional, huge, ugly—

“Ka-kagome??”

“I’m a freaking whale!! I can’t even hug you right!!!”

“Kagome!” Inuyasha chided her. Gods, he was probably sick and perverted but honestly, he thought his wife and mate never looked sexier to him. Plump and filled with his pup? If he could keep her that way he would—but she had been starting to show some discomfort and lose her self-confidence. While he continued to assure her his perceptions of her were unchanged, ultimately he couldn’t wait for her to birth their future child. He was just unsure how to calm her down. Her mood swings were worse than normal with her lack of sleep and now her worrying about Shippo.

“Lady Kagome? Lord Inuyasha??”

Inuyasha turned to see Satsuki standing a couple feet away from them. She looked slightly hopeful… and almost comforted at the scene before her—him, his pregnant hyper-sensitive mate crying in his arms; Gods, he prayed they would kill him right then. He really didn’t want to have console two women, one of which he would have been happy to never see again.   

“Sa-Satsuki?” Kagome hiccupped.

“Is everything alright?” Satsuki asked.

“Yea, she’s just… worried,” he said. He had learned after the first three moons to watch his words and not say the first thing that popped into his mind—it had made the beads became a very appealing tool for her. Then after they were used, there’d be more tears. Guilt. He was probably just as tired if not more so than his mate. Thank Gods pregnancy was only nine moons.

“Are you sure? Lady Kagome?”

“Yes, yes I’m fine. Just hormonal. My mate is doing a good job comforting me though,” she looked up at him smiling softly. He returned her smile, swearing all the sits were worth it. He loved this woman beyond measure. He’d permanently live in the ground if that was what she wanted… well as long as he was able to still have her ride on top of him, anyway. After tasting what it was like to be with her, he could never be celibate ever again.

“Oh, that’s uhm… Good. Yes. Very good.”

Kagome could hear in her voice she was in fact disappointed it was not an actual serious fight. She could feel her now agitation rising but with Inuyasha arms tightening around her, she was able to reign herself back in swallowing thickly.

“Sorry we haven’t been able to talk Satsuki…” Kagome offered.

Satsuki was holding back, and she could tell. She was trying to smile but it didn’t reach her eyes let alone the rest of her face. “It’s okay, Lady Kagome. You were the obvious victor after all… no need to rub salt in the wounds.”

“’Victor’?”

“Of course, anyone who would give their body so willingly would be able to win the man.”

Inuyasha started to growl and Kagome began to shake with anger. Had she seen them that night in the Sacred Tree? But how? No one else in the village had treated her any differently… then again, she was never really alone with anyone… 

“What are you saying, Satsuki?” she asked as she tried to shift out of Inuyasha’s arms. He briefly snarled but she pressed her hand to his upper arm and allowed him to wrap his around her waist as she turned to face Satsuki fully.

“I know about the evening you had… shared yourself with Lord Inuyasha. I was honestly surprised to witness that you had taken such a rash course of action when you found out he was to be engaged to me…”

“Satsuki that’s not—”

“Kagome!” Sango called from down the road running towards her.

“Sango? What’s wrong?” Kagome looked to her friend.

“Shippo took off again! He’s really upset! Miroku tried to chase after him but fell victim to one of his tricks! Inuyasha! You need to speak with him at once! This is getting out of hand,” Sango protested.

“We’re a little busy here at the moment, Sango,” he seethed looking at the woman standing across from them trying to threaten his pregnant mate.

“Inuyasha, I can handle her, please, go—Please! Go get my Shippo,” Kagome looked to him frantically trying to not erupt into more sadness. He swore internally. He couldn’t  not  go get the kit, but he also didn’t want to leave her to handle this crazy little bitch.

“Inuyasha, I will stay with your mate,” Sango said approaching and blatantly ignoring the girl that stood in front of them. Sango was the best beta he could have ever asked for in his pack. While Miroku was his brother in arms and spirit, Sango was a fierce warrior and communicated well with him in a way that made his instincts relax. He looked down at his wife and nodded then kissed her lips fiercely; he hoped to put on a show for the bystander to make sure she knew who the fuck she was talking to—and that he loved and desired and longed and craved and yearned for his mate—that he adored her and worshipped her, would seek out embarrassment for her to feel secure—that he wanted more than just her body. 

Once he felt his wife was thoroughly ravished, he smirked down at her blushing face and scent of arousal he had coaxed then kissed her forehead, “I won’t be long.” He quickly headed off in the way of Sango’s home to catch the runt’s scent.

Kagome stood and watched flustered, blushing hotly as her husband ran off after th-th- thattttttt  . What was he trying to prove? She rested a hand on her stomach and then she heard a scoff making her turn back to—  ooooooh . THAT was the point he was trying to prove. That he loved her and not Satsuki. If anything, he only basically pissed her off further. She felt Sango wrap an arm around her shoulder giggling at the show her friend had put on making Kagome turn her gaze to her best friend, still madly blushing.

“I’d say he is getting anxious about just having you all to himself,” Sango teased.

“Hmmmmm,” she hummed happily distracted until Satsuki groaned again from being ignored. She thought maybe the young girl didn’t like the idea Kagome was lost in thoughts of her husband… the man the girl pined after.

“Satsuki, I’m honestly not sure what the problem is here—Inuyasha loves Kagome. He has always loved Kagome. While you think he fell for you while she was gone, that was just simply not the case. He was awaiting Kagome’s return,” Sango chastised.

“If that were true Lady Sango, why didn’t he make his intentions known? Also, Lady Kagome never showed her interests until after my father spoke with Lord Inuyasha—which, I can’t say I blame him for choosing her. She gave her body so freely to him before marriage—humping him against a tree—no wonder such an honorable man had to marry a—”

Sango grabbed the girl by her kimono and pulled her close to her and glared down into her eyes, “Don’t. Finish. That. Sentence…”she threatened.

“Sango—Stop!”

“Kagome! She was about to dishonor you!”

“It’s alright Sango,” Kagome tried to soothe. “What happened is in the past. I don’t regret my decision to share myself with Inuyasha that night. Or ever. He is my mate and husband. Satsuki clearly does not understand what that means to a demon.”

“She also doesn’t know what it means to be patient or wait at home like I told her to when I dropped her off at the village after our bath,” Sango added, releasing the younger girl’s kimono.

“I was worried about Lord Inuyasha and apparently had every right to be!”

“Satsuki, demons don’t just take lovers or are that easily enticed… Demon’s typically only mate once they find their true-mate. While demons have more basic instincts attuned to nature, they also have more… control. That night, he bonded with me; the act is something a demon wouldn’t do unless they instinctually knew the other person or being was their true mate—someone to share their lifespan with, be with for an eternity,” Kagome explained.

“Lord Inuyasha is not just a demon!”

“No, you are right Satsuki,” Sango said. “But his human heart also chose Kagome long ago… you were young when we all traveled together to gather the Shikon Jewel shards and probably don’t remember how Inuyasha used to be—but Inuyasha had chosen Kagome. When Kagome returned, his human heart was what actually kept him from claiming her—because she had wanted to continue with her priestess training. He had thought that he couldn’t be with her. She proved to him that he was wrong by well…” the slayer blushed knowing what exactly happened in the tree. She had made Kagome tell her every detail. It was so romantic and daring—she almost wished she had a demon husband to launch them into a tree to try it.

Kagome cleared her throat and blushed slightly, “Anyway… it was not to betray you Satsuki or to even take him away from you. Didn’t your father talk to you? Inuyasha said he had already declined the proposal before he met us by the hot springs.”

“He said that, but I didn’t believe him; so, I went in search of Lord Inuyasha and that was when I had seen you two in the tree. I had wanted to confront you at your wedding but you two missed the celebration my father had decided to throw for you… I see why,” she gestured towards the baby resting inside Kagome’s womb.

“Satsuki, I did not become pregnant until the late winter. But yes, we did what married couples do the evening of our wedding…”

“Satsuki, in the demon world, Kagome and Inuyasha married the night they were in the tree. It is not for you to cast judgment upon what they did or how they did it—they were and are still very much in love with each other. They love each other so much they are bringing another member into our pack,” Sango informed as she lightly grazed the bump that would be her niece or nephew.

Satsuki looked like she was backed into a corner. She looked hurt, confused, and disheartened. Kagome felt bad for the poor girl. The poor thing really didn’t understand… Honestly, Kagome wouldn’t have either back when she was fifteen, but after traveling with Inuyasha, Sango, and Miroku for a year she learned a lot about demon nature and the world you didn’t learn in a village.

“I hope… we can be friends, Satsuki… I’m sorry you felt I betrayed your trust,” Kagome reached out to lightly rest a hand on her forearm before she retracted it, then looked to Sango and followed her back to her home to help Miroku.

Before they got too far, she winced making Sango stop short and gather her friend in her arms, “Big one?”

“Uhhhhhh…” she groaned gasping a little for air when she caught herself holding her breath. “Biggest one for far. Gods, how’d you do this twice?? Ugh, and allow him for a third round??” 

Sango giggled and rubbed her shoulders soothingly, “Shhh, it’s okay; take a deep breath. There you go; let’s get back home quickly. Once we get Miroku out of his prison, I’ll send him to retrieve Kaede.”

 Where the fuck was that damn runt?!! He had been upsetting Kagome for months now and he was over it. The little fuck was going to get a fucking piece of his mind! He had no idea what had gotten into him! He was fine when they mated and fuck—even when he made the tyke sleep in the spare room rather than with Kagome he only bitched a little.

He finally caught up to him—he had stopped by the river and he was—what the fuck? Why was he crying?!!

“Shippo! What the fuck is your problem??” he yelled landing next to the fox kit.

“Go away, Inuyasha. Go be with your happy little family…”

“What are you talking about?? Kagome is worried about you and you should know that’s not good for her or the pup!”

“I don’t care!!!”

“…What the fuck do you mean ‘you don’t care’?!” Inuyasha was starting to lose his patience. His inner demon blood was boiling at the thought this other male demon held no remorse that he could be potentially endangering his mate let alone their pup.

“I mean that I. Don’t.  Care !!!” Shippo yelled glaring at the older half-demon. “There’s no place for me so why should I care?!!?”

“There’s no—” Inuyasha paused… No place for him? What the fuck was he talking about?

“Shippo… What—Are you fucking  stupid !?!?”

“Leave me alone, Inuyasha!”

“Shippo answer me! What is your deal?! Why the fuck are you saying there’s no place for you??”

“Because there isn’t!!!”

Inuyasha took a moment and watched his young pack member break at the seams… Of course there was a place for Shippo. Hell, if there was a place he could call home, a mate he could call his, of course the runt belonged!

 “Shippo, your place is with us. You’re part of my pack.”

“No! Not anymore! Sango and Miroku, I understood! They’re human—I understood why they wanted children of their own. That was fine; I still had you. Then when Kagome returned it was great! We were our own happy family! Then—then you pupped her! You’re replacing me! Someone with your own blood! Then Sango is pregnant again! I’m just not enough! I’m not wanted!” the fox demon cried.

Inuyasha was in an awkward and uncomfortable position. Kagome was better at this kind of crap than he was. But for her sake, he’d try. He needed to get some of the stress and worry off her before she popped.

“Look—Shippo—just because Miroku and Sango are having another kid doesn’t mean they don’t accept you… Just because Kagome and I are also gonna have one soon… fuck… If Kagome heard you say that, it’d break her heart, Shippo. She loves you. She calls you her baby. Like—like she actually is your mother. Watching her with you… it was one of the reasons I thought I was ready to be a father, because she was so ready to be a mother. Not that I think I’ll be very good at it—I’m kinda a fuck up when it comes to you but, I figured with Kagome as a mother, everything would be alright.”

Shippo looked up at him and took in his words. He began to calm down and rubbed his eyes to wash away the tears, “You—You really think I’m a part of your family?”

“’Course I do. Kagome wouldn’t have it any other way. Besides, your little brother or sister is gonna need you to look for them.”

“You’re better at being someone’s old man than you think,” Shippo offered making Inuyasha raise an eyebrow.

“Whatever. We should get going… your  mom  was having some signs of labor and Kaede was supposed to come check on her.”

“Really? Already??”

“Well, you have been avoiding us recently. It’s been stressing her out.”

“Am I to blame??” Shippo’s face fell as his voice rose in panic.

“Nah, pup is fully grown anyway and ready to come out. Come on, you can ride on my shoulder,” Inuyasha offered.

“Thank you… Old man…” Inuyasha smiled at the term of endearment the fox kit gave to him as he launched to cling to Inuyasha’s shoulder as they ran. 

 When they were en route to return, he knew something was wrong. He could smell anxiety, fear, and worst of all  blood . He sped up with Shippo gripping onto his shoulder and saw Miroku and Rin outside his home with the girls and their son.

“Miroku?? Wh—” he was cut off by the agonizing scream his wife made and almost lost his shit.

“Inuyasha! Kagome went into labor while you were gone—she’s alright! Sango and Kaede are helping her. You should remain out here—”

“Are you fucking crazy?!? My MATE is in there giving birth to my PUP!!”

“Lord Inuyasha, Lord Miroku is right, it is improper for the husbands to be present in the birthing room,” Rin chimed in calmly while playing with the girls and young boy.

“Inuyasha isn’t just Kagome’s husband though! He’s her mate! He should be allowed to go in if he wants!!” Shippo protested hoping off Inuyasha’s shoulder to stand in front of him.

“Inuyasha?” Sango said from the doorway catching everyone’s attention. “Kagome is asking for you—if you’re alright with that.”

“Of course I am!!!” he yelled and stomped past her. He stood with Sango at his side gazing at his mate who was laying down panting heavily, sweating from exertion, wincing from the pain. His ears flattened and he leapt without a second thought to kneel beside her.

“Inu—yasha—“Kagome gasped brokenly.

“Kagome—I’m so sorry—“ he apologized lifting her hand that was grasping a towel on the floor. He felt terrible she was going through this pain. He had done this to her. Shit. Not to mention he had left her alone—

“Yash—it’s not your fault. This—is  normal —” she cried out in pain again feeling another stupid tremor in her lower back, burning down to her core, feeling an immense amount of pressure build.

“What can I do Kagome? Tell me—I’ll do anything,” he whined.

She caught her breath and looked at him and reached for his ears which he lowered his head to let her reach while he side eyed the other two women in the room to make sure they kept their comments to themselves. Thankfully, they only smiled at the couple as they continued to get additional towels laid out and brew a pain reducing tea for Kagome.

“Yash—Can I—”

“Anything Kagome. Just name it.”

“Can I lay my back against you?” He nodded fervently and moved behind her then slowly lifted her so she was reclining against his chest between his legs as he held her to him, stroking her arms, pushing her hair out of her face and pressing comforting chaste kisses against her head as she took deep breaths.

She reached for one of his hands and he quickly gave it to her as she tensed up, crying out her pain of her next contraction—they were getting closer and closer, lasting longer each time. Kaede came back and lifted up the yukata Kagome was wearing and looked to Sango who nodded and went to Kagome's side, wiping the sweat from her brow lovingly with a cold wet cloth.

“Okay Kagome, it’s time to start pushing, alright?”

“M-mhmmm,” she winced.

“On my count child; next one we will, alright?” Kaede prompted

Nodding Kagome swallowed and shifted her cheek against Inuyasha's chest for comfort. He began to rumble deeply not caring anyone else was present—he needed to relax and comfort his mate. His human half that felt embarrassment from the action could go to hell at the very moment.

“Alright child,” Kaede said calmly after a few minutes which felt like seconds to Kagome. “One, two, push.”

Kagome grasped Inuyasha's hand tightly, squeezing her eyes shut and let her body do what it needed to do while screaming out her pain. 

“Few more seconds; keep going child,” Kaede coaxed. “Alright. Take a deep breath. We’ll go again here in a moment.”

“Oh God—” she sobbed. This was horrible. How did women do this multiple times without pain medication??

“Kagome, you’re strong. I’m right here. But you’re stronger than you think. You can do this—come on—” Inuyasha soothed resuming his rumbling.

She nodded and Kaede gave her the signal it was time; she pushed again clenching her teeth and then whimpering the final moments before she couldn’t exert herself anymore.

“Oh Kagome,” Sango gasped happily holding her leg and rubbing it softly. “The baby—”

“What?? What’s wrong??” she panicked.

“No-No! Nothing is wrong. The baby has his ears! Just like you wanted,” Sango encouraged.

Kagome half-laughed half hiccupped from a sob trying to come out. Inuyasha kissed her temple and nuzzled her with his chin.

“Alright Kagome, once we get past the shoulders it’ll go easier. Ready? Push,” Kaede commanded reassuringly.

Kagome gave it all she had; she just wanted to hold her baby in her arms. She wanted to be out of this pain. She—oh fuck! She still needed to inquire about Shippo!

“Kagome relax—it’s okay,” Inuyasha soothed sensing her panic. “We’re almost there.”

“Shi—Shippo?”

“He’s outside. He’s fine. He wants you to have his brother or sister—focus Kagome,” Inuyasha pressed.

“Kagome, child, relax—ye need to start again, now,”

Kagome cried out again and felt like she was burning,  tearing , Gods help her! 

After a few more prompts from Kaede, strong reassurances from Sango, purrs and kisses from Inuyasha, finally she was at her last push when the baby cried out making her gasp. She looked back up to his face and saw him smiling softly down at her.

Sango moved away to help Kaede cut the cord and then moved to clean the child before wrapping the baby. Kagome watched worriedly but smiled tearily as Sango came back and knelt beside her placing the babe in her outstretched arms, “It’s a girl.”

Kagome gasped thickly and allowed her tears to fall freely moving her head back to see Inuyasha again who wrapped his arms around the both of them to steady her shakiness.

“A—a girl??” She looked down at her lovely baby girl; she was almost identical to her father. Bright silver hair, pointed ears on top of her head, but bright amethyst eyes. “Heyyyy there,” Kagome swooned quietly, scared her voice might break.

The baby’s ears twitched making Kagome sigh in delight and her hand attentively reached over to stroke one.

“Kagome, we need to deliver the after birth.” Kagome nodded giving the baby to Sango and did as she was told by Kaede’s instructions. Once she was done and cleaned up, Inuyasha lifted her in his arms to lay on the futon; Sango had laid out some towels to catch any additional bleeding and positioned the pillows they made to prop her to a sitting position. He removed his haori and engulfed her in it before he went outside while Sango helped Kaede finish cleaning up after offering Kagome the baby to feed her.

“Yo, runt. Come meet your baby sister,” Inuyasha said.

Miroku, Rin, and Shippo smiled while they gasped their joy. Shippo ran in as Miroku and Rin congratulated the half-demon. Sango and Kaede emerged encouraging them it was time to go only to be shocked to see Satsuki standing at the hillside with a basket in her arms. 

Biting her lip, she stepped forward and rested the basket between them and stepped back. Inuyasha could only surmise it was what appeared to be an offering of peace.

“I just wanted to apologize to Lady Kagome for my behavior this past year… I will do what’s right and speak with the villagers—not that they took my words to heart anyway… And—I—and to you, Lord Inuyasha; I apologize for my misunderstandings of your intentions. I—I am glad you picked Lady Kagome as your mate and wife. It seems she understands you better than anyone…” she bowed to extend her respect.

Everyone watched to see what Inuyasha would do—not only had this girl just caused an unpleasant encounter with them today, she had apparently been spreading things throughout the village. Kaede had heard the gossip and quickly smothered it and Kagome’s pure heart diminished any other sign of distrust or malice within them. Her powers remained strong and that was more than enough proof to them what kind of woman Kagome was. The villagers had seen such a change in the half-demon, none of the men questioned Kagome’s morals—they all knew the half-demon loved her from the beginning. But the punishment or forgiveness was left to Inuyasha. 

He stared at the girl, having to take deep breaths. It had been a long and difficult day. But he had to remind himself—this wasn’t about him. This was about Kagome. He looked to Sango knowing she had finished out the altercation with the young deluded girl earlier and she nodded to him. 

Sighing from exhaustion and annoyance he finally spoke, “Satsuki, while I’m still angry with ya, Kagome only wanted to work things out between you two. Sorry you mistook my feelings for you—but I have been and always will be in love with Kagome. I… appreciated your kindness while my mate was away, but my thoughts were only with and of her. For her sake, if nothing else, I forgive you… But so help me God if you—”

“No, no Lord Inuyasha. No more, I promise. I would like nothing more than to be friends with Lady Kagome.”

“Fine. Come back later this week… My wife needs to rest.”

“Of course, I will let the other village women know and we can try to make you baskets for congratulations on the baby to help out,” she said bowing and hurriedly taking off.

Kaede patted Inuyasha on the shoulder and motioned for the others that it was time to go. She informed the hanyou when and how much tea to give Kagome, also letting him know there were two different types, one for pain and the other for lactation.

He thanked them then as they left and walked back into his hut. He stopped short at the sight of Kagome feeding their daughter with Shippo perched up on her shoulder asking questions. His heart had never felt so full. Watching his new family, he thought about how much he loved Kagome. About how he thought he had seen her at her most beautiful underneath him as he ravished her body. This though—her flushed from birthing their pup, feeding her, that delicate kind caring loving smile adorning her face, Shippo propped on her shoulder gazing down at the new babe…

“Inuyasha?” Kagome asked tiredly.

He was so lost in his train of thought he hadn’t realized she had caught him staring. She beckoned him over and slightly scooted herself so he could cradle her from behind again; a position he’d happily take. He lifted Kagome up so she wouldn’t hurt herself further and placed her between his outstretched legs, leaning his head down to watch his pup feed greedily off his mate.

“Inuyasha, what are you gonna name her?” Shippo asked quietly.

“Huh?”

“Shippo wanted to know what you’re going to name his sister,” she leaned back heavily, enjoying his embrace after such a tiring ordeal. 

“Oh… well…” he paused. He knew what he wanted but he also didn’t want to dishonor Kagome. She had done all the work and wanted her to know how much it meant to him she not only had been more than happy to conceive his child, but carried, and birthed their pup… he needed her to know what it really  meant  to him. “Why don’t you name her, Kagome?”

“Wh-what?”

“You…. You did this. You gave me a pup. A family… I-I’d have nothing without you. I owe my life to you…”

“Inuyasha…” she said tearing up looking back at him. He kissed her cheek and nuzzled against her rumbling happily.

“So Kagome! What are you gonna name her??” Shippo interrupted.

“If it’s okay with Inuyasha… I’d like to name her Izayoi. After his mother.”

“Izayoi...” Shippo repeated mystified watching the pup feed from his adoptive mother.

“Re-Really?” Inuyasha asked.

“Mhm, if that’s alright,” Kagome offered.

“’Alright’? It’s more than ‘alright’! Kagome I—”

“I know,” she finished kissing his cheek. He bent down and locked lips with her in a passionate kiss making an ‘ew’ erupt from Shippo. Kagome giggled but snuggled closer into Inuyasha.

Once Izayoi was finished, Inuyasha helped settle Kagome to lay down. She immediately moved once he was lying down to use his shoulder as a pillow then she adjusted Izayoi to be held by her on his chest. Inuyasha encouraged Shippo to lay down by Kagome’s shoulder—it wasn’t like they were going to be doing anything sexual for a while anyway. HE also had to also get used to the idea Shippo was not just another pack male, he was technically their son… It was okay for a family to share a futon in transition.

While the day had not been what he expected, he was…happy. Kagome always made him feel whole, complete, wanted… and now she had given him this—a family. He closed his eyes thankfully embracing his girls and couldn’t wait to see what tomorrow brought.

Kill la Kill the Game: IF: “Quick” Ending Thoughts

I’ve been thinking about Kill la Kill's OVA because I finally finished IF. I've definitely wondered if the game's story would mess me up as badly as that extra episode did. 

Dramatic, but the OVA really put me in such a funk when it dropped. Thoughts of rewatching it turn my stomach. 

But in the end, while I do have gripes with the game's story mode, it ultimately doesn't make me feel sick like the OVA does. I'll write my in-depth thoughts eventually (maybe after eight months again), but tl;dr, the game does what the OVA doesn't: it respects Senketsu as a character.

And since my own investment in the anime overwhelmingly stems from Ryuko and Senketsu's partnership and camaraderie, for me, personally, the game's simple choice to honor that Senketsu is a person is... meaningful. It's what I wanted from the OVA.

I'll save most of my blathering for that future blog post, but I do want to highlight some of my favorite moments from Ryuko's final two IF episodes because it's fresh in my mind, and, well... I just want to gush for a bit. Major spoilers for the game to follow.

✄ First, I think it's hard to capture Mako's "Hallelujah!"s in a 3D format, but these lines are cute:

Mako: I bet Lady Satsuki just wanted some friends, too! And now, she’s got a whooooole buncha naked friends!

I've said similar things before, but I love how Mako doesn't hesitate to see Satsuki⁠—who is so often treated as greater than human—as an ordinary girl who just wants friends.

✄ But more to my main motivation for this post, Ryuko and Senketsu's interactions are the real fanservice of Kill la Kill. (For me, anyway!)

Senketsu: What do you mean? What edge?

Ryuko: Senketsu... I got a batshit-crazy idea.

Senketsu: Don’t you always?

Ryuko: You know it! Anyway, do you think you can do what it’s doing?

Senketsu may worry (and who wouldn't for this girl?), but he also admires Ryuko's creativity and ingenuity, and it's so precious.

✄ I really don't have a lot of constructive things to say about their moments together. Ryuko and Senketsu are just absolutely adorable in these final episodes.

Ryuko: There’s nothing the Primordial Life Fiber can do that you and me can’t. Nothing.

✄ Babies. 10/10/ A+.

Senketsu: Reckless is our middle name!

Ryuko: Damn right!

✄ Seeing Ryuko smile in Senketsu-Kisaragi is such a joy, too. That didn't really get to happen in the anime.

Ryuko: I guess this future can happen, too!

✄ And while I do get a kick out of "more comfier," Ryuko talking about how good Senketsu-Kisaragi feels makes my heart melt.

Ryuko: This is... Senketsu-Kisaragi... It feels way warmer and more comfier than usual. I feel unbeatable!

Did I lose way too many Bloody Valors and go for this line more than I should have purely because it's sweeter than sugar? Yes, yes I did.

✄ They remind me of a butterfly, especially from a distance. That Senketsu's teeth come to resemble wings makes me so emotional. Their good communication allows them to soar, or they're both emerging from their chrysalis, flying out into the world....

Idk symbolism, but I love.

✄ IF excels in the details. Subtly emphasizing Ryuko and Senketsu's growing bond, Senketsu speaks more when playing dual-wield Ryuko, and his sp.C complaint that Ryuko's making him dizzy changes to support. With Kisaragi, for the first time, Senketsu has something to say for each super.

Ryuko: Let’s go all out!

Senketsu: I’m ready!

Ryuko: Let’s fly, Senketsu!

Senketsu: Right, let’s step on it!

✄ Senketsu also speaks in Kisaragi—also for the first time—during normal battle. I caught the lines, "Don't bite your tongue!," "I'm starting to sweat!," and "Leave it to me!" 

Senketsu telling Ryuko not to hold back with “Don’t bite your tongue!” might be my fave, but the lines all highlight how their teamwork has grown.

✄ I'm really bad at RPS, so I lost this final battle, um... a few times, let's say. But one thing that got me is that even when fallen over, Ryuko and Senketsu would still float. Not even a KO can bring them down!

✄ On that note, I'm sure I'm the only one who finds this amusing, but that Ryuko casually floats along in Senketsu-Kisaragi just 'cause she can makes me smile, especially considering her angry stomp-stomps only moments before. They flyin' now.

✄ That Ryuko seems so offended that Houka would say Junketsu-Shinzui is stronger than Senketsu gets to me, too.

Houka: It’s [Junketsu-Shinzui’s] way more powerful than your Senketsu.

Ryuko: Do I look like I give a damn?!

✄ But back to the battle, of the three options that can trigger the SEN-I-SOSHITSU, these lines are unquestionably my favorites:

Ryuko: If I get to be like this someday, then I’m all for it. But first things first! I gotta get back to reality and make sure I get it!

Just Kill la Kill me with cute, why don't you?

✄ "Ryuko! I can feel your blood surging!" is a line that sounds like it shouldn't be adorable, but it is so adorable. They are adorable.

Senketsu: Ryuko! I can feel your blood surging!

Ryuko: We got a lot riding on this. We can’t lose this one!

✄ This makes me feel so many things.

Ryuko: Hey... Senketsu? When this world disappears... what’ll happen to us?

✄ Kill la Kill makes me feel so many things. It's weird to have finally played to the end of IF after all this time. It's weird that there's no content waiting for me anymore. 

The game got mixed reception, but if this is it for the IP, I'm good. Unsure, but hopeful. That's a nice end.

Ryuko: Oh.

✄ tl;dr, I'm sure this is an unpopular opinion, but to me, the story of the Kill la Kill game is a more satisfying send-off for the series than the OVA.

Maeda - The focus? That sounds cool!

Personality: Ichiyanagi (Often prefers Ichiya for time’s sake), is a relatively bubbly and outgoing person. She’s talkative, and always up to date on the latest news. Her demeanor with new people can be questionable, depending on first impressions. Sometimes she can become a touch snarky and rude, as she’s definitely not opposed to letting people know how she feels about a situation.For the most part, she’s very open to new friendships, and can almost seem overenthusiastic. In cases when confronted with something she’s not interested in, she becomes preoccupied and bored, letting it be known that she’s not interested in the least. This behavior can honestly change on a whim, but typically directly relates to how much respect and affection she has for a person. Many of her old friends would have her undivided attention, despite talking about something she knew so little that she couldn’t even understand it. 

Ichiya is obsessed with cute things, and will often get so excited over things along those lines that she will gush for hours. She definitely can carry a conversation by herself, even with minimal input from the other person. She tends to get offended easily, and though her default would be to immediately throw a fit, she’s been working on assessing and appropriately handling her emotions so that she can think before she acts or speaks. It doesn’t always work, but... hey, there’s progress..(?)

Backstory/Story: Ichiya had always been a little of a problem child, though the problem was much worse when she was a young child. She was given anything she ever wanted, as well as a lot of attention from her father, effectively turning into quite the spoiled brat. She demanded attention from her peers, and when she didn’t get what she wanted, she resorted to being rude and mean to force it out of them. This behavior stayed relatively constant, only changing in the manner that it became more covert as she grew. With her mother remarried after her parents split, Ichiya became turbulent, but was forced to be more well-behaved at home with her father not present to condone her bad behavior.

Come middle school, she had befriended two girls that each shared the struggles of a chaotic background and home situation, introducing her to a wider perspective and scope of people. Though they were practically a small-scale gang, what with all the members they assembled and their somewhat questionable activities, the group satiated her craving for rebellion, and helped her vent out her anger, stress, and frustration. 

Her mother and step father, voiced concerns over her behavior, deciding to try and remedy the problem by reaching out to the parents of her friends to get them involved. As a result, the gang was disbanded, and the three ring leaders now all attend different schools. Without her friends and followers, and having her fill on large-scale rebellion, Ichiya began to slowly cool down. After attending  Tōō with her step sister, Sasai Miu, the most pressing problems for her became her grades and conduct. 

Her sister, a part of the school’s student council, decided to try getting her assistance, by asking her friend and council member Imayoshi to try helping her. Reluctantly, Imayoshi agreed, and began with simple tutoring and attempts at keeping her near to keep her out of trouble - varying degrees of success... mostly failures. During practice, he kept her on the sidelines, where Ichiya would be preoccupied with her phone -instead of her homework-, and socializing or occasionally watching. She trailed Aomine out when the coast was clear, considering it seemed he was also ditching his responsibilities, and adapted his rooftop space as her hideaway. 

They could talk, and she was satisfied with someone that didn’t immediately judge her behavior, as well as him satisfied with someone similarly not chastising him for skipping out on practice. Due to one of her friends from middle school, Kuroda Yoruko, having an interest in basketball, Ichiya asks Aomine to teach her after noting his place with the team.  She persistently pesters him until he agrees, though she reasons that she only needs to know enough to bluff out her friend, should they meet up again. This continues almost in the form of lessons like a routine, and when Aomine resumes practice, they continue playing on the off time. It becomes therapeutic for Ichiya as well, and gives her something to focus her attention into, helping her to be overall more relaxed and less volatile. 

Relationships: 

Sasai Miu: Ichiya’s step sister. They got off on a rocky foot, and even now their relationship typically is one built on comedic jabs and refusal to honestly state their attachment to each other (Honestly, just Ichiya). Ichiya typically pokes with and teases Sasai for her naive and innocent demeanor, hammering in that with her stature as well, no one would ever guess that Sasai was the older of the two of them. Even though Sasai wants the best for Ichiya, and the latter will often reject her attempts at expressing love for her sister, Ichiya actually cares deeply for her step sister. She looks at Sasai as one of the few people that never gave up on her, nor tried to outright change who she was. For that reason, she is actually intensely protective over Sasai. 

Kuroda Yoruko: One of her close friends from middle school. Both of them related to each other regarding their turbulent home lives. They met initially due to an argument, one which they state out of embarrassment that they simply can’t remember the details of. It immediately turned ugly, and was interrupted by Yuda Ren, who later became their other friend. Though tension stayed between them for a time, they developed a mutual respect and a sort of kinship. By the end of their time in middle school, they were practically inseparable, though it didn’t have the chance to last into high school, as they were all separated. Kuroda’s parents, who are less involved with her life, didn’t actively move her away as the others’ did. She is attending Seirin, meaning she and Ichiya have the opportunity to catch up, and just simply haven’t yet had the opportunity. They still text often, and call when they can. Kuroda’s interest in basketball stuck out as a big point, enough for Ichiya to want to surprise her by learning a little. 

Yuda Ren: Not what you’d expect from your typical image of a borderline-middle-school-gang-leader with a turbulent home life. Yuda was academically excellent and typically well-mannered, coming from a fortunate background. She had a surprisingly confrontational personality, lining her charisma with snark and rudeness. Her contrast to Ichiya and Kuroda helped diversify their group and create a surprisingly balanced union. Yuda acted more as the mother figure, mediating between them when necessary, but actually genuinely enjoying their company. She found it a breath of fresh air that they weren’t immediately judgmental, and that she could be more relaxed with them. Her parents were incredibly disapproving however, and rather than just being sent to a different school, she was sent outside of Tokyo to attend Yosen. It’s a lot harder for Ichiya and Yuda to keep in contact outside of phone calls and texts, but Ichiya fears that too long of it will cause them to grow apart. 

Imayoshi Shoichi: He was put in charge of assisting her by Sasai’s request. Ichiya didn’t initially have much of an opinion on him, though she was disappointed that she couldn’t convince him to just do her work for her. She overall has more respect for him because of his standings with Sasai. Sasai highly respects him, and Ichiya is certain that ‘mutual respect’ isn’t the only way to describe their relationship standings. Save for Aomine, and later Momoi, she gets to know Imayoshi the best out of the Tōō team. 

Momoi Satsuki: She didn’t really get the opportunity to know her well in the beginning, especially because she ditched the practices a lot. She had assumed that Momoi’s demeanor would put her off, and that they wouldn’t get along, but much to her surprise, Ichiya admired the amount of spunk Momoi possessed on top of her more girly attitude. The two hit it off before too long, and sometimes would completely leave Aomine out of their plans to hang out together instead. It still drives him crazy. 

Hashida Kaiyo: Hashida was more of Momoi’s business than Ichiya, so considering the two had their issues, Ichiya stayed out of it. after Hashida and Momoi managed to repair their differences, they occasionally began to hang out together along with a few others, though it was a tough effort to eventually pull them together. Ichiya and Hashida get along rather well, though more than Momoi, Hashida fuels Ichiya’s need for the darker side of socialization, and is never short on gossip.

Conversation I’ve had with my dad

So my dad isn’t huge into anime, unless it’s the couple episodes of Space Dandy that he’s watched or half of Steins;Gate that we never really got around to finishing he’s not that into it and doesn’t understand why I talk about it so much. There’s one big exception to the rule though, my dad loves Miyazaki movies!! There’s no need to really push too hard for a viewing of Spirited Away, Kiki’s Delivery Service or our favorite Howl’s Moving Castle. I brought up one day in the car why that was other than the sheer artistry and storytelling factor that he loved them so much and he brought up a very interesting argument. He told me that he loved the way that Miyazaki almost always writes stories with a strong female heroine in the center instead of a man. I’ve always loved his female characters, especially Kiki and Sophie since I relate the most to them. I personally always get sucked into the way that he writes a female character. They aren’t just strong but they also have weaknesses as well. Kiki worries that she’s too different and too strange from the other girls around her, Sophie questions whether or not she’s attractive to men and has a lot of insecurities that border that, Chihiro has basically never worked a day in her life but always tries her hardest to prove herself, Satsuki and Mei are girls that have to struggle with not only a vast age difference but a sick mother too and a dad who works a lot, Sheeta is too mild mannered and soft spoken and needs to learn to stand up for herself and so many others these are just my favorites. I’m a natural shy girl who loves to look at these films as more than just movies over analyzing the hell out of them. I feel drawn to these girls, especially to Kiki  because I’ve always felt too strange and out of my element around other people mostly girls. Funnily enough my favorite personally isn’t even one that was created by Miyazaki-san himself but another director Yoshifumi Kondo who created the character Shizuku and put her into a young adult romance movie. Shizuku is a natural introvert with only a few friends to her name but loves fantasy novels. She tends to be overly emotional and thinks a little bit too much about what the little things could possibly mean. She spends a good first chunk of the movie trying to figure out who could possibly be checking out certain books in the library before her. I think that this is one of those characters that I will always relate to despite being perpetually single.
