Hi there! I've been meaning to ask this because ive beem seeing this take in the fandom lately and its about sakura. Most fans say that while she's an okay character, her love or rather obsession for sasuke, brings her character down. Like while hinata was inspired to be better and stronger bc of naruto and how she was a good influence to him, we see sakura making questionable decisions (fake confessing to naruto, drugging her friends and trying to kill sasuke, thinking about whether he cares or not about her in the middle of a war, confessing to him before he fights naruto, chases after him post-war, thinking of him returning her feelings if she confesses again and again while she was beating up kido) bc of sasuke.

I personally dont agree with their takes but im curious about what you think. I wasn't really bothered w it at first but lately all I've been seeing on narutwt is threads on how sakura's character just goes down the drain as soon as she sees sasuke on shippuuden. They also say that if it wasn't for some parts of her novel and boruto, she would've been one of the worst female mcs to have ever existed.

The very fact that they're labelling Sakura's actions towards Sasuke as an obsession and Naruto's actions towards him as true friendship, already does their argument no favours.

The same thing can be said about Sakura and Sasuke. It was Sasuke's words that encouraged Sakura to be more friendly and accommodating towards Naruto. It was Sakura's actions that prevented Sasuke from losing himself to the Curse Seal's influence as early as the Forest of Death. It was Sakura's actions that filled Sasuke's lonely existence with love. It was the desire to save Sasuke that encompassed a large part of Sakura's motivation to train under Tsunade. These are all good influences on each other.

We see sakura making questionable decisions (fake confessing to naruto, drugging her friends and trying to kill sasuke, thinking about whether he cares or not about her in the middle of a war, confessing to him before he fights naruto, chases after him post-war, thinking of him returning her feelings if she confesses again and again while she was beating up kido) bc of sasuke.

Fake confessing to Naruto - Because Sai's words pushed her to that decision, as he himself admitted.

Drugging her friends and trying to kill Sasuke - Certainly a rash decision, just like Hinata rushing in by herself to try and take on Pain of all people, was a rash decision. Does anyone hate on her for that though? Of course not, because they acknowledge that her actions had noble intentions, as did Sakura's. Yet, no one ever gives a fuck about the intentions behind Sakura's actions. They only ever care about the action itself and the result.

Thinking about whether he cares or not about her in the middle of a war - How is that a questionable decision? She needed to know whether or not the person she was working with in the most important battle of their lives, was trustworthy.

Confessing to him before he fights Naruto - Again, I fail to see how this is questionable. Telling someone who believes they are alone, that there are people who still love him, is understandable.

Chases after him post-war - She didn't though. She did her own things for 2.5 years until Sasuke himself returned to the village. Then she joined him later on after he had resumed his travels.

Thinking of him returning her feelings if she confesses again and again while she was beating up kido - Again, how was that questionable? Sakura realised that Sasuke and herself were indeed getting closer to each other, and this served as extra motivation for Sakura to continue pummelling Kido into oblivion. These thoughts gave her the extra strength and belief she needed in order to turn the tables and win; it was good, not questionable.

Appearances can be deceiving.

For instance...Hinata had a teacher back in middle school who, for all intents and purposes, seemed a nice enough man. An active part of the community, well-liked by his students, and a staple part of the school in which he taught. He was lenient with those who needed it, and tough on those who he knew could do better.

But during her last year, when she was no longer in his class, a rather startling discovery was made.

On the run from another province, he was accused of murdering several middle school girls at his previous school. But with the help of underground cosmetic mods, he had his face changed enough to escape notice, starting a new life on the other side of the country where he could once again begin stalking students.

Thankfully he never had the chance - he was caught when a substitute for another teacher managed to recognize him despite the mods. He was arrested, and later imprisoned for his crimes.

From then on, Hinata knew better than to trust what face people put forward. What you see isn’t always true.

Which is what makes her newest...friend? so intriguing.

Since stumbling upon the half-dead man in an alleyway, Hinata has been unable to escape one Uchiha Sasuke: a member of the infamous yakuza currently overseen by his father. Having been beaten and stripped of his (rather expensive) mods, it was Hinata who, on an insomnia walk, hefted him from the refuse and took him to a doctor she knew.

And that was only the beginning of a bond that saw her kidnapped, nearly involved in a gunfight, and then marked as a target by the Uchiha group’s biggest rivals: the Senju.

Since then, it’s been Sasuke’s self-imposed mission to keep the woman safe as repayment for her kindness, and also for his failing to protect her when he first attempted to fulfill his debt to her.

Which means that outside work and her time spent at home...Hinata has been stuck with a rather interesting bodyguard.

Sasuke doesn’t hide what he is. Be it his mods, his tattoos, his smoking or his sometimes coarse language, he doesn’t shy from his title of gangster. He knows that what his family does is unlawful. Dangerous and harmful, even. But he does have at least one code of conduct: repay his debts.

Having someone like him in the presence of someone like Hinata makes a very strange pair indeed.

You see, Hinata’s father runs the largest Japan-based medical mod company. She was once heiress...before daring to call out his hypocrisy. She now lives in a tiny apartment in a rather...questionable part of town. Which is how she found Sasuke. And she works for a mod insurance claim company. Which, admittedly, she hates. But she does do her part of under-the-table dealing to help those who truly need it find underground care.

Hence her knowing the good doctor.

But it goes without saying that the pair of them going, well...anywhere together tends to draw some very confused gazes. After all, most wonder what on earth such a sweet looking young woman could ever be doing running around with someone like him.

Sure, Hinata hasn’t ever hurt anyone - in fact she herself has been the victim of violence more than once. But she does technically break the law rather often, given her redirection of insurance claims to illegal operations that go beneath the government radar. Sure, she does so for morally-just reasons...but it’s still illegal.

She wonders what people would think if they knew: that such a sweet, trustworthy, likeable face has been lying to her employer and her government for years now, costing them mountains of money with every customer or patient she reroutes into the less-than-legal channels.

Sure, it’s nothing compared to Sasuke’s repsheet, but...still, worse than most would assume just looking at her.

And the same, she feels, goes for Sasuke.

During their time together, she’s observed him as carefully as she can, not wanting to be caught snooping. It’s something she’s always been rather good at. Her eyes are pale enough that most people don’t notice them slid to their corners to watch them. Sasuke, so often, just seems so...normal. He drinks coffee with heavy cream (but no sugar - he doesn’t like bitter, but nor can he stand sweet). He’s taken to feeding the stray cats around her apartment building. She saw him completely interrupt traffic to help an elderly neighbor of hers cross to the proper street from her window on his way to see her once.

Sure, he might do bad things...but he isn’t a bad person.

After all, he’s doing what he’s doing for her out of a sense of honor. He could just flip her the bird and leave her to defend herself from the Senju, helpless. Maybe it’s wholly for himself, for upholding his code of ethics...but it doesn’t feel that shallow.

He doesn’t just stand around looking tough. He talks to her, argues with her, and even jokes with her...though his humor is bone dry. There’s been many a moment when she’s forgotten why he’s around. They bicker and banter like...friends.

...she’s almost forgotten what it’s like to have friends. High school was rather lonely, and her shuffle right into a dead-end job and a micro apartment didn’t really lend itself to making them. Sure, she and the doctor get on fairly well, but...they’ve only ever seen one another for business. Technically that’s the reason Sasuke’s around, but...it just feels...different.

...so maybe she’s not as annoyed by his playing knight as she was when it all first started.

“Now what are you doing?”

“Hm?”

Chin in a hand, Sasuke juts it slightly toward her. “You’ve been staring at your HUD for like fifteen minutes. I can’t see it, but I can tell.”

At his accusation, Hinata goes a light pink. “...uh…”

“Watching porn in public?”

“W-w-what?! No!” Her voice jumps several octaves, drawing the glances of other patrons. They’re currently seated in an outdoor section at the front of a cafe having coffee. Sasuke insisted he needed to refuel, and she never minds a cup herself.

He gives a cheeky, lazy grin, posture still lax. “Then what are you doing?”

“I’m...playing a game.”

“Oh? A game that involves staring at your HUD?”

“It’s...not the most interactive, sure. It’s more of a daily click sort of...t-thing.”

“Ah, gotcha. So you’re not really a gamer girl.”

At that, her lips purse in a pout. “Hey, I play games at home. This is just more...maintenance.”

“Sounds exciting.”

“It’s...cute. You collect cats.”

Immediately, something lightens in his expression, and his posture becomes a bit more attentive. “...oh yeah?”

She doesn’t miss all that, but suppresses a smile, not wanting to drive him off the subject. “Mhm. It’s an older game, Neko Atsume. People used to play it on their phones.”

Sasuke hums in acknowledgement...and something tells her he’s already on his HUD looking it up. She knows already how fond he is of cats. See the above mentioned strays he’s pseudo-adopted. “Sounds...boring, but cats are all right, I guess.”

“Like I said, it’s mostly a daily click sort of thing. You check to see what cats are around, w-what they’ve left you, if they took treats…”

His eyes flicker, and though she can’t see his HUD herself, she already knows what he’s looking at. “...huh.”

“Want to play?”

“I might. If I get bored enough.”

She just gently rolls her eyes.

...a week later, he approaches her with a scowl, and she actually braces herself for some kind of argument.

“What have you done?”

“I...w-what?”

“That stupid...cat game!”

She blinks.

“The whole damn syndicate is playing it now! I can’t stop checking it! We almost missed a raid because the wrong people got distracted!”

Before Hinata can stop it, a snort escapes her, both hands coming to cover her nose and mouth. Eyes go wide. “I...I’m sorry…?”

“I can’t believe this…”

“Sasuke-san, I...I didn’t mean to -?”

“I know,” he snaps, cutting her off...which she’s gotten used to. “...don’t introduce me to any more games. Got it?”

“O...okay.”

“Wasting all my goddamn time,” he mutters, lighting a cigarette and taking a frustrated drag. He gives her a halfhearted glare when she can no longer suppress her giggles. “If the Uchiha Yakuza falls it’s all gonna be your fault, I hope you know that. You and your damn cats.”

“I’m sorryyy!”

“No you’re not!”

“Yes I am!”

“Then why’re you laughing?”

She can’t reply, too caught up in her amusement.

To anyone looking on, they’d see a scowling, tattooed, heavily-modded man they’d immediately peg as a bad guy.

But Hinata knows better.

     More of the cyberpunk AU! Not really anything plot-drive this time: more introspection about appearance, which DOES play a fairly big role in both their characters, and their world at large. With the ability to modify your looks, you can really put any face forward - literally. While neither of them have any real appearance mods (though Sasuke does have his eye mods), they still have traits that don't match their exterior!      ...I'd...say more but it's very late. this one literally makes me cry. i get chills what the fuck. definitely one of my favs. am i a bitch? maybe. i like the song by itself but like the way the rise/general shape of the melody flows with the visuals its like oh god oh fuck. again fuck jiraiya but like the role his character serves as a link between these disparate groups of people and the way thats used in this opening… how it starts and ends with him writing and this is the arc where naruto reads tales of a gutsy ninja and he learns about how he got his name and jiraiya wrote the book and hes WRITING and im going CRAZY!! i’m starting to tear up watching it rn. the shot of konan and the pains in that moment just before they leap forward. ok from this one there were two lines i remember always seeing in the english sub that made me freak out. and one of them was like “this red hot love burning my heart” and it was over kakashi and obito fighting like damn OK. also the “i put the candle out with my finger” thing sticks in my head idk why. hate that we have the narutos big meaty claws i mean manly hands moment though. omg its hashirama and madara and then it CUTS TO SASUKE AND NARUTO IN THE SAME POSE LOL OK…

SILHOUETTE IS a banger… not as much so as some of the others but its a lot of fun. very colorful op, we got some naruto pining for sasuke, classic. also love the thing where ppl are running and they age as they do and they sort of grow into their present selves, a fun visual bit. the end where narutos like obito be nice now look at all these people behind me who think youre a meanie please be nice :(((((((((

LINE uugrgh i love this one, maybe a fav… naruto chasing after the light and sasuke trying so hard to snuff it out as they both reflect on their memories of each other oh god oh fuck… also i love the bits where it just has all the characters in a row like it reminds me of that one post about how in the endgame trailer they had a shot of all the female characters together to be like Girl power!! and someone was like yeah thats them showing u exactly how many women theyre going to disrespect LMAO but yeah i do love this op. also the song itself being slower w/ the triplet tempo is a nice change of pace

At least this is what you’re referring to, I remember seeing that post around and honestly just say you don’t like the characters/series ya know?

I will just start and say that it’s up for you to make your own view on something by actually digging into it, by this ask only it seems you haven’t tackled on the series and just speculated what has been spreaded around (thanks sp) but then again if you’re just curious what is up then by all means continue reading this lol

But if you don’t care for a full view, then I guess the shortest I can put it is this: Sasuke will be deemed a ‘deadbeat father/husband’ due to the fact he’s on a mission, Sakura will be deemed many things but in the case of what you’re asking it’d be a ‘doormat wife who is a single mom at this point’ yet is just being a supportive partner and continues being a doctor while raising their daughter - by themselves alone they are just hated lol

Your ask just reeks the fandom the general, and again I blame the one sided ‘b/w’ thinking people have - which isn’t good for a series like this 

I’m going to have to do a read more since it’s a lot to begin with, just 2 episodes and it counters what the manga had (and this scene you’re referring to is all their doing at this point - I literally read the manga first before getting into a anime because of this studio) 

So let the headache begin :) 

So episode 17 of Boredo has Sakura leaving on a trip and Ino is to accompany her (or at least see her off) thus this scene happens:

Now in the case of both the anime and manga this is something that is kept right: Sasuke has maintain keeping no contact to his family. Now keep in mind these are my views and consider why with Gaiden I don’t have issues with it like what other ss supporters do: then again I got back into the series near the end too. 

Sasuke is sacrificing his life to keep everyone protected, and really this is a lot already for a guy who was deemed a criminal for the series. As the name ‘the Shadow Hokage’ has been placed on him, he’s basically out there in search to stop this ‘threat’ he knows is dangerous. He keeps the hokage informed of anything needed to say - but why can’t he tell his family something. 

In my view, he knows his family is safe, he is out there doing what is needed to keep them safe, so when his daughter (who they haven’t seen each other in years) confronts him about this whole fiasco:

‘What is going on at home’ ah yes Sasuke, your daughter wasn’t going to wonder what’s happening with her dad away (but again, from his view he sees his family being okay) I added this much earlier already but it’s enough to get you thinking. 

(Also as someone who loves kishi’s style they honest to god can’t animate his style, they don’t even know how to draw breasts at this point unless they really want to get their ‘flatchested’ mom agenda still) 

(Ah yes if only Sakura knew what was going on, it’s not like he just left on this mission with no discussions with his partner :)))) 

(Ah yes, if only she knew, like in the manga, what is at stake :))

And then Ino is like ‘oh okay hey remember how you guys had a date here!’ which cause to Sakura just ‘??? I guess? It was like 2 min girl’ and she just left her there on the bench to remember the date lmao (more gloating on the poor wife!?1 how can we make this more sad?11! :))))))) 

Ah yes, Sasuke sure is one to forget things, sure he is - that boy Sasuke :) 

This shouldn’t be included to what you’re asking but it’s clear to me at this point that the writers just don’t get them, it’s like they looked at part 1 of the series (not even part 1 like the first couple chapters for sakura and then sasuke going revenge like is who he is lmao) and just ‘yeah that’s them the whole rest of the series’

So we have: 

1) Sakura being left in the loop of things and just doing what she wants to believe (*insert bandwagon insult*)

2) Sasuke is a cold hearted asshole as usual (cause that was who he was the whole series am I right) 

3) They decided to add this date for????????? Oh right they’re a couple, totally gotta add something that’s them :0 

But see how this, one scene, is enough to invoke people to claim these things? There’s so much more, but this just hits home since gaiden kicks off after; and boy does it counter it badly. 

Boredo is very clear not Kishi’s work, if you already having to rework a timeline to fit into your anime timeline then really who am I gonna believe? 

The ‘no contact’ thing was a issue with both works yes, but the manga made it clear on why Sasuke is on this mission and who knows about it; yet here we are.  

So let’s go off: Why is Sasuke away exactly? Why isn’t he contacting his family? Why does it matter, why are we having fans showing the manga to the studio writers and telling them what happen - and why are the writers being entitled to say that that’s kishimoto’s point of view of his own damn series.  

Here we have Sasuke presenting to the kages (along with Sakura) a possible threat that could be even more dangerous than Kaguya - and that is scary. 

So judging by this possibility, it’s clear Sasuke is the only one who can do it, and seeing how he’s made amends with everyone at this point it’s clear he’s now in a stable lifestyle in Kohona. But the possiblity of a threat to go against this - your family, your home, ‘a bright future’ - you are not going to push this threat away. Especially if you’re the only one to do be able to do this. 

Now here’s the thing: this is, at the time, a mere hypothesis; it was up to him to reject it or not. As he suggested, keeping the mission in secret, was the best choice. The mere thought of it would cause the public to be anxious, and the ‘peace’ they have now built will be broken - the public will want answers and with a hypothesis like this there was no way it was going to be given. 

Add the fact, what if this wasn’t as serious as he thought, which leads to believe there was no estimated time to say how long he’d be gone. Leaving it a private case would cause no havoc in the end since it wasn’t as serious as he assumed: but of course it was and in the end it’s estimated he left when Sarada was at least 4 years old (the whole one night stand/doesn’t love her bullshit is just like That is not Sasuke nor Sakura - and a whole new post in general) 

Now Sakura being present pretty much settles everything, she knows why he’s out there, she knows what’s at stake, and as her reaction shows, she’s shocked to imagine a threat like this is possibly out there; she was there after all. 

To come home to see their young daughter, the ‘bright’ future of the Uchiha Clan, that is at stake. Considering how Sasuke is the head now, there will come a day were he will have to tell Sarada the whole history of the Clan; his past is already too much to begin with. But let’s see what the anime did with this meeting :) The reason Naruto feels at fault after all for this case as well. 

‘We will have another episode containing the kages and Sak-’ But for what reason? They have this meeting to discuss all together what Sasuke believes is out there - you can’t counter the series for the anime timeline like jesus

So you mean to tell me Sasuke still feels after around a decade that he stills need to travel to see ‘a new light’? The kages being not there just wants to shove this idea down more because yes I get that he won’t be accepted by everyone - but like they already agree with him on taking this mission already so really - Sasuke still needs to go off and find himself? Really. R E A L L Y

Obviously not screenshoted but yes they decided to add Naruto telling him to stop by his house before going but he refuses; which bascially proves they left out Sakura so she’d have no clue why he left for this mission and thus have her ‘believe’ what is going on - god they really need to see why fans would be furious.

Like yes it’s wrong to assume on my part that the couple dicussed what could be said or not to their daugther - but it’s just logical to assume. And as I mentioned way before, Sasuke will be the one to tell Sarada the clan’s history; his past is a lot to handle already. Let’s add m o re: 

They know what they thought was best at the time was not going to work 100% through, but they like - all parents  - aren’t perfect. 

And really just the pair themselves face enough already, but it’s mainly due to the fact people have such a ‘b/w’ ideology to a ninja series and like this studio - can’t even realize that these two did grow up and change as characters do. 

I’ma have to stop now since you get what I’m going at as well as it’s starting glitch up now but final thoughts: 

I can easily say Kishimoto shouldn’t had made Sasuke be on this mission, I could be like the studio and claim what’s right etc. At the end of the day however I’m just bitter at the fact people look at these two and claim things about them that the manga goes against it; the studio has made it clear they have no interest in these two and will somehow find a way to ‘drag’ them for who they really are. 

But again, it’s your view, if you find me liking these two is a wtf complex in general you can just unfollow me; it’s clear these two are my faves in the series. By all means I hope I didn’t mean to offend you in any way, it’s just you can tell I’m just tired of this fandom my dude. 

I honestly don’t think I fully explained things for you, but i could of easily said ‘nah it ain’t true’ and ended it there too so here we are lol

In a nutshell: don’t believe everything ya hear without checking it out ya self, ya gotta form your own views my dude :^)
