Cut from the Sky by @mallstars - a Podfic
Tumblr media
Please enjoy the audio version of this incredibly beautiful and moody fic. I was so thrilled that @mallstars gave me permission to record it and also coached me through some German accent-ing, since I'm a bit rusty. And of course as always, thank you to all the wonderful people at @etl-echo-audiobooks who betaed, edited, cheered, and squealed and got us to the finish line.
Cut from the Sky by mallstars Length: 17 hours Pairing: Draco x Harry Tags: Time Loop, Slow Burn, Memory Loss, Unspeakable Harry Potter, Shop Owner Draco Malfoy Rating: E Summary:
"I'm stuck in a time loop, reliving November 2nd. This is the 111th time I've lived through today." Draco stilled. His moody eyes, the tension in his hands where he gripped onto his umbrella, the careful mask of blankness flickering over his face — everything about him was so difficult and so very dear to Harry. "Ah," said Draco, "and?"

Tonight I just posted 5 podfics of @ligercat's Phineas and Ferb works. Normally I try to space out my podfics but when I heard of Ash the Cat's tragic passing today I decided to finish editing the five ones I'd recorded in August. Wish I could do more than just make podfics, but I hope these help some.

What I did today was put together a podfic. The fic was about 2000 words long (exactly 1972 words) and the podfic ended up being 15m3s long. I recorded how long each part of the process took.
Recording: 23m (10.36%) Editing: 3h8m7s (84.70%) Exporting + Posting: 11m (4.95%) For a total of: 3h42m7s
(and for me specifically, editing is split into 3 halfs. an initial runthrough deleting all the flubs and retaining the good takes that took 51m, a second run through to erase as many clicks/breaths/other assorted sounds as possible to make the listening experience more pleasant that took 55m18s, and a third one to finalize the timing, add a little reverb to dialogue to make it stand out and fix anything i missed the first two times that took 1h6m46s.)
So, conclusion: Obviously, everyone's process is going to be a bit different, and I honestly have no idea if I'm some wild outlier with ridiculously high or low podfic creating time, but I thought it would be beneficial to have an idea of just how much time goes into making one, especially if you've never made one yourself. And what parts of the process take up the most of that time. Editing is most of the work, and it is. not exactly fun. But it's worth it.
And again, this was for a fic of about 2000 words, with a raw initial recording of only 23 minutes that got cut down to 15. That's not very long at all, and it still took well over 3 hours to really finish (to my standards, anyway.) so. you can imagine how much more something longer would take. 5000 words. 10000 words. bless any podficcer who makes multihour long podfics. go thank them right now for their service. and pray they keep their sanity lmao.

8 and 10
From this list.
8: What am I currently working on?
A Zoé/Kagami story where they bond over difficult families and having crushes on Marinette, while practicing flirting with cute girls. On each other.
Oh, and they’re fighting off crystal zombies in the meantime.
One shot, like basically everything I write these days. The first draft is almost done, I just need to write the actual kiss. After that I think it needs quite a bit of editing love, but it shouldn’t be too long before it’s published.
10: Story that got a different response from what I expected?
So, so many. I am terrible at predicting responses, and responses can be so varied. Is Rooftop musings one of my least successful ones, or the most successful one because someone ( @jajalala ) recorded a podfic for it? No clue, and at this point I’ve mostly stopped caring. Some stories do well, some don’t get as high numbers, trying to think too much about that will just drive me crazy. What matters is that I like it and that at least someone else does too.
What amazes me the most is the long tail some stories get. Just today I got another kudos on “And now what?”. The story is half finished, and I haven’t worked on it for ten years. The fandom was never big, the anime got cancelled halfway through a major arc, and the manga is long gone as well. And the pairing I write was not the most popular even back then. But somehow, someone still manages to find it ever so often, and leaves a kudos. That’s really amazing!

Fannish goals for 2024
Over on dreamwidth, there's a fandom challenge called Snowflake Challenge that's all about spreading love and enthusiasm for fandom (at least, that's how I take it).
Today's challenge was to write goals for 2024, and I thought I'd post them here as well.
There's this post going around on here about setting goals that are fun, setting goals that will enrich your life instead of put pressure on you. In a similar vein, I don't want to set goals that challenge me, but ones that will make my life better. Self-care goals, so to speak. And part of self-care, for me, is always creativity. So when I say "I want to do x in 2024", then that's because I know that I'll feel better when I do x, and that not doing x is a sign that I'm not taking enough time for myself.
So my main goals for 2024 are:
taking the time to write in a creative capacity at least once a week
taking the time to make some music at least once a week
taking the time to do something creative with my hands (sewing, carpet knotting, building something out of wood, leatherworking, ...) at least once a month
writing & talking more about the things I love
It's all about the time I spend doing it, and not about results, because it's the time I spend with that activity that makes me feel good. Finishing something feels good too, but that comes automatically with spending time on it, so I don't set it as a goal because that would put pressure on it.
I do have some creative projects on which I want to spend that time, that I would like to see finished, and some things that I think will be fun challenges:
I want to talk more about my favourite books, movies, TV series. I have opinions, why not connect with others over them? same for new stories I read / saw / played
I want to record, edit and publish at least one podfic this year
I want to participate in at least one fic exchange (probably yuletide again, but perhaps the worldbuilding exchange?)
I want to write more for the WIP that I started last year (character A lusting after character B, and a very unadvisable but mutually wanted kinky one night stand, fandom: Tatort Saarbrücken)
I want to polish my other Tatort Saarbrücken WIP (coming of age pony farm AU) into something I can publish
I want to turn more of my Mass Effect Andromeda worldbuilding idea into a plot-shaped something
perhaps continue my Rivers of London x The Old Guard crossover fic?
There are other fandoms for which I feel the urge to create something, but I don't have any concrete ideas or WIPs, so that's something for exchanges.
(the same post on dreamwidth)

I have to edit podfics now and while I still absolutely want to do podfics for the sake of making my writing more accessible, I am absolutely NOT thrilled about having to do this right now.

Hullo again, RQG fandom ♥
The anniversary of the RQG 218, the finale of the show, is almost here, in a little less than a week! And so is the RQGversary, a fan event I am organising.
Today, I am revealing that we also will have a collection of RQGversary fanworks, that will have all of your fanworks posted on AO3, if you would like to share and preserve them that way.
Is this collection only for fanfiction?
Obviously not; it's for everything you post in celebration of the anniversary according to the prompts, from fanart and fanfic to podfic and crafting, to every single little thing you'd like about the podcast and fandom!
Are NSFW works allowed?
Yes! Celebration of fandom via works that are of more mature nature is perfectly valid, and, frankly, celebrated by me in the same measure. But please tag them according to AO3 rules; works that aren’t tagged properly won’t be added to the collection.
Will this collection close on the 3rd of December, after the event is finished?
Actually, I've considered leaving it open for another week, and so it will be open for late additions until 10th of December! So don’t feel pressured to post everything on AO3 within the RQGversary prompt days.
Thank you for reading this post, I hope you will reblog it and the edited version of the RQGversary post, and wishing for all of us to have a great celebration of anniversary soon!

🎊🎉 NaNoWriMo 2021: Day 30! 🎉🎊
1825 words written today 91590 words written total (goal: 50000 words)
Okay, so I didn’t quite finish Chapter 79, I didn’t get through ANY of the editing I planned to do in November, and I’m not done with Book 1 of Ice & Smoke yet. But I got close to double my word count goal, wrote 16 complete chapters (which means that I now have 25 unposted chapters totalling nearly 140k words), got right up to the end of the fic, recorded 8 podfic chapters, and won every badge on the NaNo site! Look at this beauty:
Tumblr media
I’m going to be working on podfic editing (and possibly drafting a few oneshots) over the next few days to give my brain a bit of a break/change, then start working on getting Chapter 54 of I&S edited beginning on Saturday, and get back into drafting the final bits of I&S next Monday! Enjoy the last sneak peek I have to share with you!
Sneak Peek: Beware spoilery material below the cut!
*
Zuko shook his head slightly. "They weren't--aren't my friends."
"You were with these guys for three years and you didn't make friends with any of them?" Sokka asked, sitting back again.
Zuko shook his head again, chin resting on his thumbs with the rest of his fingers extended upward, almost pinching the bridge of his nose. "I'm not--I'm not good with people."
Sokka glanced at Katara, then at Yue, then back at Zuko. He sighed, let his head hang for a moment, then looked up again. "I'm probably going to regret saying this, but--you're really not the worst. Like--we've definitely met loads of people who are worse. You know. Real assholes who don't even try to act decent. And don't get me wrong, you suck at meeting people, but once you've been around for a while and the first impression wears off--"
Katara frowned. "Sokka."
"Yeah?"
"You can probably stop there. You left helpfulness behind in the first sentence."
Yue nodded, giving Sokka a small, fond smile. "It was a very nice thought, Sokka. But she's right."
Zuko just looked confusedly at Sokka. "How is it that I'm the one who's never had a friend before?"
"Hey!" Sokka reached across and whacked Zuko's arm. "I'm charming as hell. I've got charm coming out of--" he paused, gesturing broadly at his entire body. "--all the orifices. I'm like a charm lantern or something."
"If you keep talking about your orifices, I'm going to find one of your dirty socks to shove in your talking orifice," Katara said. "I don't care how tired I am. I don't want to listen to that."
Sokka shrugged. "Yeah, but you're my sister. You're stuck with me no matter what I decide to talk about."

Fic Writer Review -tag game
Ah, this looks like fun, I love statistics! Thanks to @jkrobertson for the tag!!
1. How many fics on AO3?
35, although 1 is a less-explicit version of another, and two of them are anthology fics of short fiction.
2. Total AO3 word count?
675,354 over two and a half years. I am very proud of this number!!
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
Everything on ao3 is Bleach. I’ve written in both the X-Men and Batfamily fandoms, but that was decades ago. Oh! and Star Wars. I had one absolutely wild summer of Phantom Menace Obidala Fanfic.
4. Top Five by Kudos?
a little in love now and then (302)
The Letter of the Law (215)
Between Tides (195)
Call Me Back When the War is Over (189)
Squad Six is Jerks and other Stories, vol I (175)
5. Do you respond to comments, why/why not?
Yes, I try to respond to all of them, even though it takes me a while sometimes. I feel like if people take the time to comment then it’s the polite thing to do to respond. I do have a couple of readers whom I love who write really thoughtful and funny comments and sometimes we end up riffing, and I have definitely ended up incorporating those ideas into other fics.
I do not usually respond to review on ff.net because their interface is and you basically have to PM the person. I get very few comments on ff.net and they are generally very short anyway.
6. What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
I don’t really write very much angst and even when I do, it usually ends on a hopeful note. Uh, maybe  Dear Wormwood ?
7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you've written?
No.
8. Have you received hate on a fic?
Nope, never. People are generally very kind to me! Even times I’ve done stuff that people didn’t like, people are very polite about it. I’m actually kind of amazed about it myself.
9. Do you write smut?
Unfortunately.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Nope.
11. Ever had a fic translated?
Someone offered to translate one of my fics once, but I never got any follow-up on it. @sakizar made a podfic of Not Broken, Just Bent, that’s sort of like a translation!
12. Ever co-written a fic before?
Nope! I used to write a lot of shared universe fic with my sister and some other friends, but that was in a different lifetime. I wrote the dialogue for a @kaicko comic once, that was a lot of fun!
13. All-time favourite ship?
Renruki, no contest
14. What's a WIP you want to finish, but don't think you ever will?
I am nothing if not a closer. If I want to finish a thing, I finish it. I do sometimes relegate a WIP to the DOA pile, but it’s usually because I’ve lost interest in it. I did get overcome with a wave of anxiety today about whether or not I will ever finish The Heart is a Muscle as a series, because each part gets harder to write than the last and there is a time gap in there that I don’t have any ideas for (yet). I am confident that I will finish the next part, though, at least.
15. What are your writing strengths?
Banter. World-building. Putting in a lot of little interconnected details and themes. Balancing large casts. Complex and layered relationships between different characters. Characters who genuinely care about each other and who do their best, even if they screw up some times. Descriptions of food you will want to eat.
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
I don’t edit myself and sometimes I go off on gonzo tangents that don’t advance the plot. Making characters I like too perfect. I am not good at thinking up plots and plot trajectories and I get very stressed out about it. Perpetually biting off more than I can chew and then forcing myself to choke it down anyway.
17. What are your thoughts of writing dialogue in other languages?
I don’t know about dialogue, per se, but I’ll talk about other languages generally. The main reason it took me so long to get into writing Bleach fiction is that I was very intimidated by the idea of disrespectfully screwing up Japanese cultural stuff. Eventually, I just decided to Do My Best and try to do research and listen a lot and apologize if anyone ever called me on my mistakes As far as I know, I haven’t offended anyone.
I do not generally use honorifics, because a) there are a lot of subtleties and I felt like it was more responsible to avoid them altogether, and b) my writing style has a very American cadence and it didn’t seem to fit very well. I do use them sometimes, usually in short stuff, if it feels right.
I generally use Japanese words for the names of things that are inherently Japanese, like articles of clothing, foods, etc, and also for attack names and kidou and stuff like that. Sometimes, I will go back and forth between Japanese terms and English synonyms only for the sake of word variety (zanpakutou vs sword for example).
18. First fandom you wrote for?
I think it might actually be Batman: the Animated Series, except that it was written in a notebook and the “fandom” who saw it was “my sister.” The first online fandom I was involved in was X-Men comics in the 90′s.
19. Favourite fic you've ever written?
Probably Call Me Back When the War is Over , although I think my *best* fanfic is Hold On, Hold On
Tagging: Gosh, I dunno? @zabiume and @gizkasparadise and @thegreenfaery but only if you want to

I have long ass drive today (an hour and change each way) and errands, and just felt the need to tell you that listening to you Evolution of Buddie podfics is making it massively enjoyable.
HAHAHA! That's when I usually listen to podfics too. While driving. 🤣💖
I'm glad you're enjoying them, hun! And that I can help keep you entertained! 😎
The next part of that series has been waiting for me to finish editing it for like EVER.
I'm all over the place with podfics rn. 😂🥰

Today has just been such a good day. I've been listening to a good podfic, mended a pair of trousers, finished a cover for a podfic, recorded and edited most of a chapter for Vertical limit, spoken with my collaborator for podtogether and got a bit of cleaning done. Like wtf I have done so many things which I enjoy. It's especially good since I really wanted to do most of these things the last couple of days, but just didn't have the energy.

Ok. So. I have two podfics I really want to record, if not edit, this week.
One has 5 chapters, and if I remember right the other has 8.
I did the first of 5 last night. I want to finish the other four today, and I’ll start soon, so I hopefully don’t get tired and lose motivation like I did yesterday.
I think I need to offer myself rewards though 🤔 I made some pudding, and I’ll get to eat it when I finish the four chapters. And in between them… 🤔 I think I want to do voice asks. But I don’t have a good list. Maybe I’ll find one. But either way, feel free to ask things both on and off a list. Just nothing asking for singing, that requires too much of a build-up of confidence and practice to be a good quick reward-type thing.
