The finished fossil timescale vase! Seven periods represented by seven fossils in the seven colors of the rainbow. Closeups and fossil names below

Red: Trilobites, ammonites, and pikaia among other things for the Cambrian. Orange: Tiktaalik filling in as the Devonian representative, had to include the iconic transition fossil :] Yellow: Thrinaxodon and Broomistega in the Triassic cuddle. Green: my favorite pterosaur, Ramphorynchus, representing the Jurassic. Blue: my first favorite dinosaur, Spinosaurus, for the Cretaceous. Indigo: my favorite animal, a coelacanth, sort of wedged in for the Late Cretaceous since I couldn't come up with a better Cenozoic fossil in time. Violet: Sahelanthropus Tchadensis, an early hominid (I'm not 100% on if it's still regarded as our earliest known ancestor, cool regardless!!)

Mario 34 is absolutely the logical midpoint between 4/World and 64, and it is exactly analogous to how the Ambassador-class Enterprise C is the logical midpoint between the Excelsior-class B and the Galaxy-class D, arising not from chronological progression but from being filled in, in retrospect, as the shortest distance between two set points.  i may have just written the nerdiest sentence of my life and i have no regrets

The Maniraptoran Alphabet (Part 1)

This past week I researched and illustrated a dinosaur alphabet book! I researched and illustrated 26 maniraptorans for the project, specifically limiting myself to species that went extinct before the Eocene to exclude modern birds. This project was a huge amount of fun for me and I'm very proud of the result, so I hope you all enjoy them too! Please look forward to the rest of the series, which I'll be posting over the course of the coming week or so.

Made this as a gift for a friend who had given into the urge to steal liberate a traffic drum but eventually had to return it back to the wild

i tried my best making up silly scientific names for the genus and species but ah, i dont actually know Latin (elaborations for each under the cut tho)

Basically all of them fit into the genus Conus which i felt was best meaning cone, i couldnt really find a word that translated directly to traffic.

Starting with the top left:

Parvus = small Candidus = bright (incandescent) aurantius = orange (modern latin)

Candidus = bright (incandescent) aurantius = orange

Traffic Drum - Dolium aurantiustantus

Dolium = barrel aurantius = orange tantus = big

I had honestly alot of fun "researching" traffic cones and finding the different types out there and while i dont really know latin i think i did a good job transcribing the defining characteristics into a passable binomial nomenclature lol

Do you have this thing too where you get a brand new sketchbook and youre all like "i'm gonna fill this with only amazing/pretty/logical drawings so that i can let let people look trough my sketchbook and show it to them without having to become all flusterend and "NO NO NO THAT ONE IS UGLYYYY" when they come across one particular drawing and ask me why im suddenly slamming my sketchbook shut and saying that when they love my art...
