Thinking back on it, I'm realizing there aren't many straightforward idol anime I actually like. Like, Zombieland Saga is lots of fun, but the idol stuff is consistently the weakest part of it and I always feel myself tuning out whenever that's the focus. I guess I liked Heroines Run the Show before it went to shit in the back half? Does Ya Boi Kongming count? Symphogear, technically? Maybe Hanayamata? I dunno, I feel like all those shows have asterisks that keep them from being straightforward idol-y enough to qualify. Meanwhile, by far the most traditional idol show I've watched so far has been Shine Post, and hoooooooo boy did I end up hating that one.
I think the problem is, as I grow increasingly cynical and jaded in my old, withered age of 25 years old, the overwhelming positivity that defines the idol genre starts to feel forced and cloying. It's easy enough for "believe in yourself and try your best" to work as an overall theme if you're sincere enough to pull it off. But the second that theme becomes an obligation or an afterthought, it can very quickly turn a show into the most suffocating, shrink-wrapped piece of sanitized goop imaginable. It becomes a way for a story to avoid being about anything, spouting generic platitudes and cynically designed cuteness with all its edges sanded down and dull. When I look at the weaker idol anime I've watched, I don't see stories that come by their earnestness, well, earnestly. I see coldly calculated, market-tested corporate branding exercises that say nothing, express nothing, and don't dare step a single toe out of line. A plastic smile plastered across an empty styrofoam mannequin, babying its audience with lazy, simplified moralizing because it doesn't think they're capable of anything more complex than Teletubbies, and god forbid we lose a single audience member trying to actually make an artistic statement.
But that's the thing about Juuki Hanada as a writer.
When this man wants to get messy?
He gets fucking messy.
So much of what makes Hanada's writing so powerful, in comedy and drama alike, is how well he's able to let the reins go of his characters and let them crash into each other. Snappy one-liners and comebacks battling for dominance, chaotic personalities setting off fireworks of all kinds through their interactions, but also raw, ugly emotional confrontations that don't sugarcoat anything out of fear his audience isn't mature enough to handle it. Not all of his stuff is a masterpiece- I could spend hours talking about how badly Kyoukai no Kanata's plot falls apart in the second half, Steins;Gate gets more and more exhausting the more I think about it- but even his weakest works carry the unmistakable passion of a writer holding nothing back. And when he's firing on all cylinders? You might just end up with the single greatest coming-of-age tale this medium has ever produced.
And it turns out, that sensibility is exactly what a show like Love Live needs to succeed. Because even the most optimistic, inspirational story imaginable needs that edge to temper itself against. The sheer chaos of its lovable cast bouncing off each other isn't just what makes the comedy work so well, it's what lets these dramatic moments sting the way they need to. Because it's only in recognizing these harsher moments- failure, frustration, despair- that its triumphs are able to be so meaningful. I care about Muse because I've seen what it looks like when they fall short, and I care about Honoka because this show lets me see her at her lowest, at her most human and vulnerable. These characters aren't just plastic simulations of cute girls selling a fantasy; they feel like a real friend group, messy and anarchic and free. Free to express themselves with the full palette of the human experience, even the parts most of us would rather pretend didn't exist. And it makes their successes matter in a way they wouldn't if we didn't have that grounding in the unbearable chaos of being.
Love Live is not a deconstruction, or a subversion, or a dark parody or anything so gauche. It's nothing more of less than a straightforward, inspirational idol show. But it's a straightforward, inspirational idol show that knows it doesn't have to sacrifice its raw humanity to shine with the brightest stars in the sky. And that, folks, makes all the difference in the world.

YES YES YES! You put it all into words so well! And exactly that! I couldn't pinpoint some of the things that were bothering me and made it all look so shallow and hollow and empty. I tried to exlress my feelings very clumsily but couldn't put things together. So that all that! Eberything was glossy and sanitized and... "easy" like simplified. World, lore, characters, relationships... plot. You... discover the cult and antaam support gods cause all evil... and... that's... it? Wa. Very interesting. Cool.
Solas really got some complexity but it wasn't shown enough I think... I mean, at the end until the last moment of change if you pick redemption emd for him, he was only shown as a villain and we were only told he wasn't... was a bit jarring, and weird even. I remember at times thinking "eh why you defending him suddenly?". felt a but forced in. He had been depicted as complex earlier in the game. But like some stuff weren't explored enough I think. Which... the only few good stuff in this game not exploited is like this themes actual story. Good old "some good idea completely underused". Aka Titan and blight and what the elves did too. That was good too, promising too. Other things, showed potential. Only yeah... to be resolved too easily, too... shallowly. The whole Isseya thing, potential for a lot but fell so... flat. She bad, we eliminate, hurra. All good. Like... uh? Titan and blight, harding does some personal development and... titan happy? and like just one, where are the others? Anaris, potential for some stuff what did he mean better, what perspective vs evanuris can he give, well no. Just bad. Kill. Good now. Anyway. I could go on endlessly about the wasted potential. I also did get this marvel/Disney feelings at time with the dialogues...
my #1 complaint with veilguard is probably the lack of moral complexity and maturity and how much of northern thedas is sanitized and almost all issues (outside of solas and mythal, which they knocked out of the park imo, but the moral complexity of them as characters and of their relationship makes the lack of nuance in every other faction and relationship stand out even worse) are presented as black and white, good vs. evil. i think the absence of the presence of slavery in northern thedas is the most egregious example of this. the crows are found-family heroes with absolutely no mention of the fact that they canonically populate their ranks with abused elven child slaves and kill them if they try to escape. we know minrathous to be the capital of a massive empire that was built and founded on slave labor and blood magic. the slave trade is baked into every single stone of that city, and it should be everywhere in a disenfranchised area like docktown. and yet.... its nowhere? its like they went, "okay well the factions all need to be GOOD and slavery is BAD so lets just pretend it doesnt exist so we dont have to talk about the way these factions have historically participated in it!" a few codex entries? a few mentions of freeing slaves by the shadow dragons and by solas but its never actually depicted? i think its something a lot of people have picked up on in accusations of the game feeling like something made by marvel or disney, and a lot of people are attributing that mostly to the art style and cheugy dialogue, but i honestly think it is the very simplistic and juvenile presentation of what should be complex issues diluted down to the sort of hero vs. villain, good vs. evil no-nuance conflicts that is creating that juvenile feeling, rather than the art style. past games have always had cheesy-ass dialogue and the graphics have never been the highlight of the game, but neither had the same feeling of playing something incredibly glossy but also incredibly shallow, especially in a franchise that is famed for its complex and nuanced (though, often poorly done and racist - looking at you qunari and dalish) depictions of sociopolitical issues through a fantasy lens.
but whats especially interesting is that the artbook (just the first 50 pages that are free) reveals that... this was present in the early stages of the game. the concept art of tevinter is full of disturbing depictions of slavery, as is the concept art of arlathan. now, to be clear, slavery is not a morally complex or ambiguous issue. slavery in fantasy is often depicted in ways that is damaging and problematic, especially when written by people who have no real understanding of it and its lasting effects on a group of people. bioware has been guilty of this in the past.
however, i think it is the best example of the shallowness of veilguard when compared to both the past games and the concept art. other examples, however, include literally the Qun as a whole suddenly being UNAMBIGUOUSLY EVIL combined with, imo, a super racist depiction of the antaam as mindless and animalistic, absolutely no exploration of racism against elves other than like, one mention from davrin in a game that is basically all about elves, blood magic being unambiguously evil rather than exploring how it is being used and for what purposes, the complete absence of the mage-templar mass incarceration and mass-lobotimization conflict, isseya being afforded none of the empathy that solas is given and instead presented as unambiguously evil and deserves to die, the grey wardens being heroes who definitely do not manipulate disenfranchised people into escaping their lives to join an order that will steal their bodies and eventually their minds and futures from them, and much more. going from a world that was so willing to at least ATTEMPT to depict the horrors of empires that utilized slave labor to build, the way dehumanization facilitates and interacts with these issues, violent class disparities and how poverty forces people into crime, the effects of institutionalized racism even after slavery has been legally abolished, with stories like that of varania and fenris, of zevran and taliesin, to.... finally going to the site of the horrors they faced and to find it to be completely sanitized? and yes, they did not always land, and i have a lot of issues with their execution of some of these representations (the option to give fenris back to danarius and having anders approve??????? HELLO?), but at least they TRIED to tell a story about a man recovering from the trauma of something so horrible and learning to trust again. so what happened in the middle? were they afraid of their own ability to handle the topic due to past criticism instead of attempting to learn from it? instead we are just going to pretend like it doesnt exist? we're not going to talk about it? its literally the most insane elephant in the room. of course fenris and zevran couldn't make cameos in this game, because then they'd have to make a statement on a painful, real, and difficult to discuss topic that actually means something, instead of using a warehouse full of elves being guarded by armed police at the docks as a hollywood-style backlot and depict an empire built on the blood sacrifices of the poor and enslaved as just another fun little area to explore. how does neve fight for the people of docktown but slavery literally never comes up in her story????? we know that blood magic exists but we never see who is being disproportionately used for those blood sacrifices?
i think its especially interesting considering how explicitly supportive of trans people this game is, which is fantastic and i admire bioware deeply for making such a strong and unapologetic statement of their values of acceptance. but that strong statement makes the lack of any other strong statements or exploration of issues even mildly contentious (again, slavery is not even a contentious issue, and i think that's why their fear to depict it at all, much less as unambiguously horrifying, is so insane) leaves the world of northern thedas feeling so shallow and sterile. it is as if bioware doesnt trust me to engage with topics like an adult capable of using critical thinking skills, and did not trust themselves to depict these issues like adults capable of critical thinking skills either. maybe, considering the presence of these things in the artbook, this was on EA for pushing for more mass-market appeal, or maybe it was really the bioware devs backing away from difficult topics due to a lack of confidence to do them justice. idk. but its really disappointing to me

So the fallout gets worse...
Last week I made a post about how the board at the library I work at ruled that we should immediately drop all covid restrictions in our library, and everything that happened as a result of that. Well... as it turns out there’s more...
Let me start by saying I keep pet mice. Very tame, hand raised mice I buy from a specialty pet store that gets their supply from local breeders. It’s pretty far away from where I live and it’s not easy to get these mice. I have to go on a waiting list to even get them, and they aren’t cheap. But these mice are wonderful. They’ll hang out with me crawling around on my shoulder and inside my shirt. They do tricks. They eat out of my hand. They get excited when I come home and come running up to see me. They are essentially like owning very small dogs and I’m just as attached to them as a normal dog owner would be to their dogs.
Last year right around the start of covid, I owned three of them but they all got sick and died within three days of each other. I had taken them to a vet who specialized in small rodents and he informed me that they had a certain viral infection. There was a name for it but I can’t remember what it is now, mostly because I couldn’t pronounce it in the first place... But I had never heard of it before so I asked the vet what it was exactly. And he explained to me that it’s a strand of coronavirus. Not the same coronavirus that everyone in the human population was getting sick from, but a different strand that is harmless to humans but extremely deadly to rodents and has no treatment. Once a rodent is infected, they are dead within a couple of days.
However... Just because this particular strand doesn’t harm humans, doesn’t mean that humans can’t be infected with it. Humans can pick it up and serve as carriers, and then spread it to any rodents they come in contact with.
Now fast forward a couple of months. After fully sanitizing my home and making sure everything was safe to bring new mice home, I got two new mice to replace the ones who had passed. I named them Tanuki and Kitsune. I’ve had those mice for about a year now and they’ve been doing great. Until yesterday morning when I woke up and found them both showing the signs of the same viral infection that killed my previous mice. The “Mouse Coronavirus” if you will... Within the first hour of noticing they were sick, Tanuki sadly passed away. By that point I knew what I was dealing with and that it was already too late to do anything. Kitsune passed away a few hours later...
Now at this point I found myself wondering how they had even gotten infected with “Mouse Coronavirus” in the first place... Neither of them had left my house in almost a year so there was no way they could have come in contact with it directly... That meant the only way they could have gotten infected was if I had picked it up somewhere and passed it on to them. And it had to be me. The only other person in the house is Violet but she hadn’t handled them or even been around them in a month or more... Those mice were my babies, not hers.
So where would I have come into contact with this virus? I had to start thinking about where I had been and what I had done recently. The virus kills mice within two to three days of infection, so if they died on Wednesday, they must have gotten infected somewhere around Sunday or Monday. And that made the answer pretty simple. I was at work on both Sunday and Monday, and that was the only place I had been. In fact... further simplifying things... work is the only place I’ve been in the last two or three weeks... I haven’t even been to the grocery store!
So the mice only could have gotten infected from me, and the only place I could have picked the virus up at was work. But I’ve been working at the same place the entire year I’ve owned them and they’ve been fine up until now. Did anything change recently? And yeah... what do you know... Something did just change... We removed all of our covid restrictions and there have been a tone of people in the library without masks on.
So, wow... We stopped forcing people to wear masks inside the library and within the week I had already been infected with “Mouse Coronavirus” and brought it home to my babies, killing them...
So thank you, everyone out there who thinks we don’t need to take precautions anymore. Everyone who feels the need to force everyone around them to stop taking precautions as well... Thanks... You killed my beloved pets... You killed them just because you didn’t want to put up with a minor inconvenience... I’m broken right now, but hey... At least you don’t have to wear a mask for fifteen minutes when you go to the library to rent a movie...
Burn in hell.

1/2 Hello! French anon again, thank you for the references, I'll check them out. I have to say that I am very French in my way of thinking, so I sometimes struggle with the idea of American integration and communities, often wondering what binds all the people together then. Not to say that the French one works better. There are a lot of problems and geographical segregation alone (and the many forms of everyday racism) are evidence of that. My ask this time was more lighthearted.
French anon 2/2 I have started watching Timeless (I'm at the 3rd episode, so...) after discovering it on your blog. It didn't truly click with me and it will probably stay as my ironing clothes TV show... I know it brings some degree of history awareness to the public but isn't it grossly simplified? I know the format doesn't really allow for deep exploration but still. Also, the whole "we can't change the past", well, by going there they already do, it's more like mitigating damage after that.
French anon 3/3 So I know you love it very much and I've read some of the reasons why but would you tell me if it gets better? I guess it also feel very American (not in a derogatory way!) and speaks less to me than history I've learned in school would... Anyway, I hope you're doing as well as can be, thank you for sharing your thoughts! :)
Ahaha. Timeless. Ahaha. Haha. Hah.
Hah.
(Spoilers will follow below, just so you know.)
I have, shall we say, a complicated relationship with that show. Let me be the first off to say it is not Quality Cinema; there are a lot of plot holes, the usual time-travel caveats that you kind of have to shrug and go with, and yes it is, as you say, especially American in its outlook, especially early in season 1 when it looks like the conflict is “oh no we have to save this scary Eastern European baddie from Destroying America Tee Em!!!” Believe me, I also side-eyed it a lot for exactly that reason, though it was fun enough that it kept me going. And then I fell DEEP in the trash bin for said not-actually-a-baddie at all, and... sigh.
There are still things about the show, especially in individual moments, that I thought are really well done, and I did love it (once) for a lot of reasons. You have to understand that American history is SO sanitized that for a lot of people, actually discovering the contributions of women and people of color and other unknown figures that Timeless, at its best, tried to highlight, really WAS revelatory. It inspired a ton of passion and public history examination and things that I, as a historian, obviously endorse. While still coming at everything from essentially a well-meaning white American liberal perspective (and yes, it was co-run by Eric Kripke of Supernatural infamy, hence all the fridged women in the character backstories), it did do a lot for making the average American cable-television viewer think about parts of history that they simply didn’t know about, and it inspired a devoted cult following for this and other reasons. But this fan following was a double-edged sword. It saved the show from cancellation at the end of season 1 and gave it a 10-episode season 2, which has some of my favorite episodes in the show for Reasons. But then once it was again cancelled after that, we got stuck with a two-part “Christmas Special” to wrap things up which, in the way of rushed finale so-called fanservice movies everywhere, was unspeakably ghastly on every single level, slaughtered the characters and the story, and left people (especially me) with such a bad taste in our mouths that Timeless canon (at least post-2x10) is dead to us and means we can’t revisit it without a certain amount of pain. Because yes. It was so bad. It’s generally known as the Abomination and it doesn’t actually exist.
I still love the characters, for the most part, a whole lot. Rufus, Jiya, Lucy, and Flynn are my absolute baes and I would die for every one of them. Wyatt, frankly, is the most boring, least compelling, least developed, and un-nuanced out of the lot of them, and in the way of White Fandom everywhere, he got woobified first by the fandom and then the writers, who ruined everything in the Abomination to “fix” the mistakes he had made in the course of season 2. I have rehabilitated and improved him in my fics, but I hate canon Wyatt with the burning passion of a thousand suns, not sorry, and the way everything else got dragged down by his deadweight. Basically, I enjoy the setting and the characters and the premise as inspiration for fics and fanworks more than, at this point, I enjoy anything about Timeless show canon itself. I’ve never felt the need to revisit or rewatch after the Abomination, sadly, because it was just that terrible. But I DID finish the story by writing a full-length Season 3 and 4, a major fan project that I’m very proud of, at @timeless-season-four. I did it because I was just that full of spite at how the “official” ending handled things, I knew I could do it better for every single character and story, and I did. I think that I do handle a lot more of the complexities of history in my episodes than the show ever did, but then, I’m coming at it from a different perspective.
So... there’s that. You’re obviously under no obligation to continue if it’s not your super cup of tea (and as I said, the Christmas Thing will never be forgiven by me, but hey, it’s cool). I still love parts of it (characters, lines, episodes, my beloved OTP that they did so dirty) even if not the whole, so if you still need to have something in the background while ironing clothes, it could be worse. But yes, well, there’s my relationship with it in a nutshell, and I definitely agree with everything you’ve said, especially for someone approaching it from outside the U.S. It’s definitely made from that perspective, for better and sometimes decidedly for worse, and that’s just what it is.

botox for sale
BOTOX® and Restylane® are both excellent and useful products, as we have discussed in previous posts, but they are not over-the-counter products you can buy at a gas station or convenience store. Like many medical treatments, they require specialized expertise to determine the best treatment and how to apply that treatment safely and effectively.
The reason you can't buy BOTOX® and Restylane® yourself is not because these are considered dangerous products - by all standards they have proven themselves to be very safe. But just as you do not draw your own blood at home for a routine medical checkup and instead go to a safe, clean facility to receive help from experts who have many resources at hand, it is a very bad idea to perform such a delicate procedure on yourself, especially without training, education, and years of experience.
Unfortunately, a few poorly-administered BOTOX® cases have undermined many people's trust in a botox for sale procedure that can help them cosmetically and medically, and these cases are usually the result of either an unusually inexperienced person like a technician or assistant administering the procedure instead of a doctor or someone shopping around until they find a doctor willing to do whatever they ask even when they want procedures that are not right for them.
But Don't I Know My Body Best?
You are probably familiar with your own body and its uniqueness in ways no one living outside your body can feel without experiencing it themselves. You also probably have a vision of what you would like to change. These are not obstacles and do not contradict the role of your plastic surgeon. Doctors study the latest technology, research, and treatments for many years in a highly competitive environment and they learn not only about anatomy and healing, but also what to do in rare instances of complications, and how to individually approach each case in ways that may not be obvious to the layperson. Beyond this they complete residencies, fellowships, research projects, and professorships. Add to this years of practical experience in the field working with actual patients, and they have now obtained a wide body of knowledge that is impossible to learn by reading an article (or even several articles!) online.
When doctors emphasize the importance of working with a qualified professional instead of relying on self-diagnoses and home remedies, they mean that it's optimal to bring your concerns to a doctor who will listen to you and consider all that you have to say so that doctor can provide honest feedback about technical and clinical aspects of what you need, sometimes advising a solution that you may not even have been aware of as an option, or sometimes admonishing you against a procedure for health concerns of which you might not have been aware. There are subtle differences in treatment approaches that require a physical examination along with a consultation, and this kind of insight cannot be gleaned from the internet, a numbered list of instructions, or even by looking in the mirror.
Sometimes one problem can look a lot like another that requires a different treatment - it's vital that a physician help you distinguish these from one another. Your doctor is not there to take control of your wishes, but to communicate with you so you both learn from each other in different ways and come to agree on the best course of action. Your doctor will then act with the precision and knowledge that can only be derived from education, experience, and skill.
How Will My Doctor Understand Exactly What I Want?
By being careful to keep communication open, complete, and honest, you can get exactly what you need. Keep in mind that it is your responsibility as much as your doctor's to thoroughly discuss your needs, concerns, and medical history. He or she will have a variety of approaches ranging from examining you to asking questions to discussing how you feel about different photos. This way your doctor can get an accurate knowledge of your goals, and you can ask for your doctor's advice and explain your concerns directly. Your doctor also has the advantage of being able to spot patient requests that, based on experience, will likely lead to disappointment. If you insist that an unadvised procedure be performed, you may be able to find someone who will do what you say, but you will likely regret this in the end and are better off talking to the doctor in more detail about your reservations and learning why he thinks one solution will work better than another.
Why Can't I Create Perfect Results by Myself?
No doctor learns to administer a delicate procedure like BOTOX® and Restylane® injections by reading a simplified list of instructions or watching a five-minute video on a web page. Bodies are more complex than that, as are the variations between individual bodies. What lies under the facial skin is more complex than most imagine, with different kinds of tissues and many diverse muscles there, and it's crucial to have a thorough knowledge of not only where these anatomical parts lie and how to work with or around them, but also how the thousands of components interact with each other.
You cannot simply eye your face and plunge in a syringe here and there until you think it looks good. This is a great way to set yourself up for asymmetrical results and become one of those rare people who experience complications, like lumping, "frozen" features, or excessive bruising and swelling. You could even end up giving yourself a complication completely unassociated with these products; for example if you don't have training about stringent sanitation, you could cause an infection. Further, it's important to realize that, even though benefits can be immediate, the final results will not be seen right away because there will always be a certain amount of healing time. Only a doctor who has closely observed and helped many people heal will understand how the results will change over the next few days and weeks will recognize the face's optimal response during treatment.
