ok I've been thinking about this for a bit but I wanna talk about Kris and the debate of if they're the deltarune version of Chara or Frisk. There's a good amount of evidence for both sides of the debate but I think all the things that Kris shares with Chara and Frisk are intentional choices from Toby to make it easier for us as the player to erase Kris's identity.

When we say that "Kris is the deltarune version of Chara", it's erasing who they are as their own unique person and just making them into Chara Deltarune. I think it's a part of the dynamic between us and Kris, like how often people just project themselves onto Kris instead understanding they are their own person. I think Toby made Kris very carefully to make it really really easy to project a different identity on to them, and I think the deltarune version of Chara vs Frisk debate is a part of that.

(obviously this isn't to say that those theories are bad, I think they're pretty good actually. I just think that the similarities are intentionally done to make it easier for us to erase Kris's identity as their own person)

EDIT: okay I worry that I've worded this post poorly, but basically there's various details about Kris where it feels intentionally done to make it easy for someone to write over their identity with their own ideas. Examples of this are their blank expressions, covered eyes, using they/them pronouns, being the character we play as and control.

So I think as a continuation of this idea of us writing over their identity as their own person, they've been given intentional similarities to what we know about Frisk and Chara (liking chocolate, relationship with Asriel, shared color pallettes, almost anagram names, etc) to make it easier for us to write over Kris's identity as their own person.

There is an overwhelming sense that the world has already ended.

You can feel it everywhere, but to understand it, you have to be standing in a Wal-Mart parking lot, because a Wal-Mart parking lot feels like the end of the world.

You look around, at the surrounding fast food restaurants and gas stations and at the endless endless endless expanse of concrete and think "This can't have always been here. There must have been something alive and beautiful here once."

Instead it's just a Wal-Mart parking lot

You look up at the massive building, at the Wal-Mart, and for a moment see it in its entirety, see the sheer inescapable horror of it, wonder how much has been destroyed and burned to keep this monstrosity alive.

How much space is now devoted to this Wal-Mart parking lot.

This horror is so pervasive that you grow used to it, grow numb, but for a second you recognize it, feel it for what it is, and the shock of it threatens to drop you to your knees in this Wal-Mart parking lot to scream and scream and scream.

And then it passes.

And then when it's over, you remember that you're here to pick up chips, and maybe a soda, and you go inside and ask where the snacks are.

Because it's nothing special, it's just a Wal-Mart parking lot.

It only feels like the end of the world there.

You know a trend that has been prickling at me the past couple months is this tendency I've seen towards people treating "romantic chemistry" as equivalent to how often a pair of characters say or do directly sexual things, as if the be-all, end-all of the quality of a ship's interactions is whether they're out here ass grabbing. It's deeply, deeply annoying and eminently boring. Chemistry is about the tension, the draw towards each other, the rhythm of the back and forth in *every* interaction, and the pain and the poorly held back dopey grins and the adoration in their voices, not just a tally of sexy-talk divorced from the narrative weave drawing two people together and apart.
