I am sad and disheartened even though it's about a fictional character, I needed someone to share it with who can understand, I was roaming around the internet, reading stuff about Natasha. I find myself VERY RESISTANT to this kind of shit so when the universe makes me feel like I want to hate a character I kind of go the opposite direction and love them harder than any of their fans.

For example I see so many infuriating takes with Catra and Hordak but I REFUSE to hate them. I insist on loving them more for all of their flaws, to be the one who loves them most for their character. I fucking adore those characters.

Maybe my opinion would be different if I was saturated by fandom like all the realtime watchers were? Like I'd be worn down.

I'm trying to think of other characters this DOES apply to.

For a show I'm genuinely obsessed with - The closest might be Lemongrab in AT fandom, he was super woobiefied by some people and some of those people were not particularly good to me or to the AT crew (talking events that happened over 10 years ago). I will be real it's nothing on the scale of what happened in shera fandom, and I still love Lemongrab as a character, but I avoid making anything with him in it because I don't want his fans to speak to me. Hoping the situation is different now.

There's also Simon Laurent from Infinity Train. I never particularly LIKED Simon, I find him interesting, but FUCKING HELL. TAKE ALL OF THE ABOVE CHARACTERS AND MULTIPLY IT BY 100. I was still getting messages from the "Simon Anon" A FEW WEEKS AGO SAYING THAT I NEED TO BOYCOTT INFINITY TRAIN because the creators said some stupid ableist about Simon, which they did, BUT IT'S NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY LEAVE ME ALONE. Anyone who is a Simon stan is usually completely terrifying, and is occasionally racist or sexist depending on their stance on Grace while defending their precious white boy. Once I entered a server and someone IMMEDIATELY asked me what my thoughts on Simon were, they were completely ready to start a fight with me over it and I've never felt more terrified in my life.

I also got sick and tired of Hunter quickly for pretty much the same reasons as Simon, though he's not written to be an evil incel like Simon, he REALLY IS the woobie boy that everyone considers him to be adn that's why I don't like him. I appreciate his character arc but ehhhhhh I couldn't stand him until the end of season 2 and during season 3 where it finally got past the "im going to be MURDERED by BELOS if i dont do EVERYTHING IMMEDIATELY" phase. The reason Catra never falls into this category for me is because she had supervillain energy and tried so so hard to regain agency and she kicked Hordak's ass and opened the Portal. Hunter meanwhile takes every hit, and I just... it is painful to watch, especially having been in situations of fear and psychological abuse. I don't enjoy it and I don't enjoy the fandom's TERRIFYING OBSESSION with him.

Zuko is almost a character I don't like. There is no anti-fandom for Zuko so I have no reason to stubbornly love him. People always compare every redemption arc to Zuko and I am fucking sick of it.

I actually like most She-ra art I see though. It's very rare I see something that annoys me. There's not enough fanart posted in this fandom recently for me to have seen something that grinds my gears. All the catradora art is fucking gorgeous. I don't look at nsfw so I have absolutely no thoughts about any weird tropes like I would for other fandoms like AT where the fandom was a lot straighter and drew more demeaning stuff including the girls.

I don't have any really wild out there crackships, I don't have any "problematic pairings", but I usually get self conscious and cautious when I post Catrapta, or any Entrapta x a member of BFS stuff, LMAO. Even the normal fluffy stuff but especially the sex headcanon post yesterday with Catrapta. The issue is a lot of the time people are like "she's way older than the others???" and either I have to say "actually, that was a post by a character designer with no evidence in the show--" and I look like an idiot trying to justify something wrong, or I just say "theyre both somewhere in their 20s" and get it over with.

But I ship all of the princesses with each other, I especially think Entrapta x Everyone is fucking hilarious, just go off girl. I'm not ashamed of that per se, it's just some people in this fandom have a stick up their ass with anything that isn't a Certified Canon Pairing.

Now if you want something I do enjoy and am mildly disturbed by that, it's Seadak. Sea Hawk x Hordak. And also x Micah. Just pair the dads together. They have never interacted but isn't it fucking brilliant????

wow, i read your alex's character analysis and i got some anon response to it. Disclaimer, i respect your opinion, just wanna share my thoughts, and also go off a total different tangent about how i see some scenes differently. Thank you for posting so much contents for dn, are you gonna do more of this with other characters?

now going back to the main point of this ask:

i think i know why i feel kinda tired about nightfall if i read it in your perspective: i feel like the way you read it is like you're emory before she met aydin, and i'm emory after she met aydin. The Feeling of dead and alive. Like in corrupt, michael said something: if you don't own it, it will own you, and i think the reason why emory doesnt mind much about anything anymore at that point of life and keep going forward despite the hurt and all that were caused by everyone around her, were because

1. She's so tired of waiting, she was trying to take more control of her life now, instead of just decaying, at least in the romantic and sexual aspect of her life,

2. she doesnt care about the specifics about who is hurting who anymore, because there's only so much to blame and expect from the things or people around her to fall into place like you / readers would expect them, but she can just do whatever things best she thought she could do at that time,

3. She wanted someone to guide her and be patient with her, which not even will was patient enough to learn how to love life with emmy, he only complained complained complained, and i hated how weak his character was, because he had everything, and she had nothing. All talk, but no action. Will was never patient with emmy, so i dont understand where did will's audacity was coming from? (This was a rhetorical question, no need to answer, i understood his pov, i was just voicing my thoughts when i read his words and actions). these charactrs (especially emory aydin will alex) were all very prideful people, so something has to give. They can't be like that forever, right? Something big has to happen to breakthrough these dramatic and extreme people. It's unfortunate it was aydin that we had to see emmy bonding with like this, or it was alex that she trusted and wanted to be in a sexual intimate situation with in fornt of everyone, instead of will and damon in the locker room, but it's just what it is, the timing wasnt right for emory will and dmaon + the horsemen were never really close to her either, so that train scene was more like how she was opening herself up and accepting their poly situation from there onwards. It wasn't just a show of trust, it's a show that her lifestyle was the same iwth them, and she wasn't ashamed of herself or them. That's why i guess it's easier for michael to help her later and talk a bit with her when they catch martin because her relationship now is beyond "just will's girl", but she is truly family. She accepted them, they accepted her. That's why rika had no doubt when she said "thank you for being my family". Emory might not have understood what that meant at that time, or even the readers, especially the ones who only read nightfall and not the books before, but rika expected emmy to show up from now on and fight for and with them like family just like how they would for her. (Side note, Unfortunately for us willemmy stans, even willemmy is poly-coded, we cannot get away from pd's sharing and poly dynamics' clutches). Do i think they look like clowns who take themselve sto seriously? Yes. But does emmy like this? Yes, 😭 unfortunately.

In this situation, as i read it (like emory) emory was the one owning them, and letting them join, not always the other way around. She is not being passive or expecting perfect detailed things from imperfect people to happen anymore, she can only deal with imperfect situations by owning who she is and go for it, even if it sounds stupidly unfair to us or she kept on hurting again (which is not true because we saw the moment she gave in, thinsg were chaning, sides were switched, and she got more allies instead of being isolated again). She was perfect for will and everyone when she just be herself and be what she wants or when she let herself be, instead of being someone she was not, even though it took her nearly a decade to admit (understandably because of her situation). By the time they got married, i believe that's why there were no resentment anymore from hee to the world or towards anyone really, for her part. A part of her that was hurting and self-destructive was finally growing up, and that where she wants to let herself be was still like a child in neverland. She never left thinder bay, she just grew up and accepted it. l feel very similar with her though, if i was her, after 10 years of disappointment by will and everyone around me including myself, i'd be so fucking tired of this self-destructive guy grayson and everything else too, but then i still wanna be with him and the past was not just one night, so i must have figured out that i really had to initiate things and have to do something to breakthough this shit, because unlike michael, kai and damon who were dominant and more outgoing with their pursuit of their S/Os, will was more submissive and tolerant, and coupled up with him being weak from ptsd and self-worth/confidence, they became his deadly passive combos, so willemmy's relationship would be at a stale point if emmy didnt do something. Unfortunate, by sigh what do you expect from a weak character/ love interest like will? That's why i like damon' line in the pool with kill switch when will threatened to hurt damon if he hurts winter, and damon replied "you dont have what it takes to be me" or something like that because as much a si hate damon, i agree. At leats damon worked for what he wanted despite how disgusting and cruel he was, will was only sitting on his high horse, coast through his life and expect things to fall into perfect place for him. And when it failed, he complaint complaint complaint. Like, will, how about you shut the fuck up sometimes?

4. since she felt like a dead leaf before aydin, always waiting, and never fighting for some of the things she wanted so much in life: like will (as opposed to her grandma's rights to heathcare and her own access career and education, that she fought for everyday, which was the opposite of banks. Banks fought for damon and kai, so she got damon and kai, but she was never as independent as emory or fought for her own things or demand education or other basic needs from anyone even though she grew similar to emory. She could even fought for these basic needs and beleive she didnt deserve to be happy to have them like emory, until emory apologized to will and resolved her (underdeserved) guilt, but banks never did. I was waiting for a breakthrough from banks like emory, but it never came. Even though emmy's wrap was hushed, it was there, but banks' never came.

We saw Emory had limits to what she can deal with, and while she would take a beating (only while she was still in the haze of abuse feeling like love, and when she still couldnt be fully financially independent from martin), emmy wouldnt let anyone take her basic rights to education, healthcare and safety away from her. These are things that i found very interesting about her, because if you ever have had to survive in the real world, even not to the extend of how emory had to, you'd know how hard it is to even do 10% the things she did without any support from anyone. Out of everyone in the series, emory scott will always get my utmost respect for this. Emmy had to be independent even though it was very scary, and had to lose so much if she chose these rights more than she chose will. This was why, even though i love nikova second from this series, i will always love emory more than her. It's just a personal preference tbh.

5. now, finally coming back to the main topic from my long tangent, Instead of letting things happen to her again and again and again, EMORY is happening to people. EMORY is taking the spotlight. And idk, i feel like a lot of your meta about alex in general gave too much expectation and unecessary light to alex, and it counter whatever things that emory was trying to do, if that makes sense? Idk, that's why i said we had very different way of looking at these scenes and prioritising which meaning we chose best how to see it, so it affects the way we saw them. Even after writing this long ask, i still agree with a lot of your points in your alex meta, but i guess i'm more delusional than i thought so even after reading your post, i still don't put too much emphasis on it. Idk, i feel like emory might have the same amount of delusion like me, that's why we move on easily? 😭😂

Probably not. As you mention later on, I feel PD sort of messed up in writing Alex, specifically in Nightfall.

Throughout the entire series, the readers are reminded that Alex is beautiful and special and different. She’s warm, everyone's sister and mother. She’s a sexy vixen, but with a heart of gold, who’s experienced the worst life can throw at her, but managed to walk through the fire – in heels! And everyone between Rika and Emory says they can’t resist her charms. So why is it that whenever she opens her mouth in Nightfall, I hate her more? What are the characters seeing that I’m not seeing?

This seems like a conflict between the writer and the character, so I wanted to analyze Alex’s character scene by scene, to determine exactly why it is that I’m so dissatisfied with her, when, based on what is written, I am supposed to love her. At the same time, I’ve been asked previously if I could change any storyline what would it be, or what could have made certain aspects of Nightfall better. While I was spending the time analyzing, I figured now would be a good time to add in what I would have preferred. In this scenario, I would prefer if Alex had a clear motive for showing herself to Emory and actually followed through. When I read the scene, focusing on her instead of Emory, I found that I was irritated with her being dodgy and secretive. It also felt like Alex didn’t really want Emory there when they went into the passageways. So, then, what was the point of revealing herself?

Anyway. I don’t have a reason to do it for the rest of the characters, because I don’t feel the same conflict with them as a reader.

Reading farther into your comment, I agree with just about everything you’ve said regarding Emory, or at least, I’ve heard those opinions/interpretations before and see them as completely valid! There’s not a lot for me to reply to because I’m mostly nodding and agreeing as I read. Still, I’ll try to pull out some bits that I find interesting.

she was opening herself up and accepting their poly situation from there onwards. It wasn't just a show of trust, it's a show that her lifestyle was the same iwth them, and she wasn't ashamed of herself or them. That's why i guess it's easier for michael to help her later and talk a bit with her when they catch martin because her relationship now is beyond "just will's girl", but she is truly family. She accepted them, they accepted her.

As far as Emory being accepted into the family, I’ve always felt that they were meant to be close. I was just frustrated that we never got to see it. I’ve also always thought that all the couples shared each other sexually, but I would love some more Willemmy moments because they’re my favorite and I thought some of the opportunity for them were given to less important scenes.

However, I was surprised to find out that the “sharing” began again so much later? According to PD, Michael, Rika, Kai, and Banks don’t engage in this activity until the ten-year later mark. I mean, what?

will was more submissive and tolerant, and coupled up with him being weak from ptsd and self-worth/confidence, they became his deadly passive combos, so willemmy's relationship would be at a stale point if emmy didnt do something.

I think this is an excellent point. Many times, we’re reminded that Will doesn’t act on his own, and he likes it when Emmy is the aggressor and is forced to admit that she wants him too. Additionally, in Nightfall, he’s at the peak of his weakness, which causes him to be even more passive than usual. He also feels that he has a valid reason to hate her, so he's even more resistant to moving forward with her. Emmy did need to make the moves that drove the plot forward.

What I meant in my Alex post when I said they were at a standstill, was just that. I could see how, if Alex hadn’t come in, Emmy and Will would have continued to circle each other, making a little progress and then taking two steps back because they’re both too prideful and confused at the moment. Aydin would continue to pull their strings, never satisfied, because, as it would turn out, revenge isn’t actually what he wanted. And I know that, because throughout the entire series, revenge has never been what these guys truly wanted.

They wanted the girl.

Aydin wanted Alex. Making Will suffer was just his way of feeling better in the meantime. Even Aydin was surprised to see Alex at Blackchurch, so he wasn’t expecting her to come for Will. What was happening between Aydin and Emory was never about helping Emory, even if she did benefit from the things that he said and did. It was about making Will hurt.

Without Alex coming out of hiding, I think the story would have dragged. I just wish she was brought out of hiding with an actual plan/motive, instead of forced out by the author to move the plot along. That was my interpretation of the scene.

Banks fought for damon and kai, so she got damon and kai, but she was never as independent as emory

I thought this was interesting commentary on Banks. So often, Banks is herald as a queen of toughness and independence, especially since she inherited Gabriel’s fortune. I’m not saying she isn’t tough or independent, there’s something about how she’s never had to go out on her own; she never tried, even when Damon was in prison. She went from her mom’s to Gabriel’s under Damon’s care to Kai’s. And when Damon wasn’t there, Banks was still watched over and cared for by Gabriel’s staff.

I’m not going to try and compare Martin to Gabriel, but I can feel for Emory not having even a single person looking out for her, and I think it speaks volumes about Emory’s strength that she made it through so much.

you'd know how hard it is to even do 10% the things she did without any support from anyone. Out of everyone in the series, emory scott will always get my utmost respect for this. Emmy had to be independent even though it was very scary, and had to lose so much if she chose these rights more than she chose will. This was why, even though i love nikova second from this series, i will always love emory more than her. It's just a personal preference tbh.

I absolutely agree with this statement. Emory deserves all the recognition for what she managed to accomplish without support. As I’ve said before, Emory is the most accomplished, talented and skilled of all the girls, and she gets the least amount of acknowledgement for it. I will never be moved from that opinion.

I’m not quite sure what you mean.

As I mentioned earlier, my whole purpose with analyzing that scene the way I did was to figure out specifically why Alex was annoying me personally. It’s one thing to say she’s being annoying, but what is she actually doing that’s irritating. Characters can be irritating, and for reasons that make sense. Sometimes that's the case. In this situation, I don't think her actions make sense and not in a way that the character is just making decisions that are different from what I would want, but that... her presence in the scene doesn't make sense.

Emory in that scene is fine. She handles everything the way I’d expect someone in her situation to do, even if she is a lot more tolerant than I would be, and I wasn’t bothered by her at all – except for the moment she starts to talk about how wonderful Alex is because I’m so tired of being told how wonderful Alex is without understanding why Alex is so wonderful.

i was just reading it with a lot more positivity and delulu than you (?) and i didnt get caught up in these perfect details so much (like emory), but i feel like if people kept on reading nightfall like you, i can see why they would hate it so much.  

If this is one of the few things you’ve read from me, I can understand why you’d think that, but truthfully, I approach Nightfall with so much hope and positivity. I usually try to talk about the potential that is there; how much I love Thunder Bay, and the world, how the characters (in my idealistic and delulu world) could be a great example of a chosen family. There’s so much here to build on, and I find that it’s enjoyable and fun to joke about if people can get over how much they hate one or two aspects of it.

I'll circle back to Aydin, because I think there might be a misunderstanding about why I dislike Aydin, though I’ve touched on it a few times.

I fully understand that Emory needed guidance, and someone who cared about her and validated the decisions she made. Emory put herself first for once in her life, and she carried a lot of guilt for the consequences of it. She never wanted to hurt anyone. Aydin told her what she needed to hear to finally move on from that misplaced guilt, so that she can start to fight more for herself instead of just letting things happen around her.

The part that I get stuck on is that Aydin gets the credit for making Emory feel better. People celebrate him for validating her, and taking her side when Will "never did." Which I also don't understand what that means, but that's for another time.

The way I see it, nothing that happened between Aydin and Emory was because Aydin wanted to build Emory up. She was a pawn to him. As a review: Aydin had Emory drugged, kidnapped, and put on an island inhabited by criminals, because he wanted to hurt Will. Emory is forced into a terrible situation because of something Alex and Will have done, but nobody blames Aydin for thinking this was a way to deal with his jealousy.

Another thing that bothers me is how Aydin knew about Emory in the first place. Will wasn't being vocal about his feelings for Emory. As many people like to point out, he didn't call or reach out, or do anything to involve himself in her life. For five years, he spent his time drunk, high, and buried in women, most often Alex.

Nine years since he'd seen or spoken to Emory. Will's feelings for her would not be so obvious to people on the outside. At that point, there should have been only two things that connected them.

One was Will burning her gazebo. That could be written off as Devil's Night antics.

The other was the video of Will assaulting Martin. However, Martin and Will had issues outside of Emory, with the way Martin had constantly been pursuing him because he was the "stupid" one.

To even get to Emory being Will's weakness, someone would have to dig deep. Because of how deep they'd have to go, I am not convinced that Aydin wasn’t at least somewhat aware of Emory’s abuse. Even if there isn’t a record of it, Martin was obviously a dirty cop. Emory taking her college money to take care of her grandmother while she’s in school, and figuring that out on her own, never returning home or acknowledging Martin in any way, would be a clear indication that something wasn’t right with the Scott family. Aydin is intelligent, manipulative, and has experience with men like Martin. He’d know the signs.

Aydin used her history of abuse to manipulate her. Just because some of the things he said made her feel better, and she was able to improve her mental and emotional state, doesn’t erase what his motive was.

Emory benefited, and that’s great. But she only benefited, because of the way she looked at the situation – not because it was Aydin’s goal to help her. He wanted to get into her head and be her reasoning, so that he could hurt Will, because of Will’s relationship with Alex.

I won’t give him credit because Emory improved her condition. I put him on the same level as Alex and Will in the way they did Emory wrong. The reason I give Will any slack is that he apologized for what he did, and tried to make amends. Aydin and Alex never did; Emory gave them her acceptance because she's genuinely a kind person, despite everything that's been done to her.

But that’s my unpopular opinion for the day. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I really enjoyed the ask and hope you didn’t mind my rambling as well.

i really dont wanna annoy you but you post about racism in fandom sometimes so i thought you'd be the right person to ask. i hope this doesnt come off as expecting u to be my teacher. yesterday someone said they didnt trust white zk shippers and i thought it was mean but then people started sending the them all these nasty messages and i started to worry maybe op was right. honestly a lot of this stuff is pretty new for me. i think our fandom is inclusive & unlike the rest of the atla fandom we actually like katara. but i'm trying to learn.

why would it be a problem that a lot of zk fics have katara looking after zuko? i always just felt like he needed it more bc he was abused and kataras better at dealing with feelings and she's good at taking care of people. is fire lady katara still ok? is there racism in our fandom? there are a lot of woc zks and i've seen them get hate for it. but the messages op got were pretty bad too. i know i'm asking a lot of questions i just hate the thinking that we might be as bad as the z*kka stans have been saying all year.

This is gonna get long so I’m just gonna jump right in. When I listened to fansplaining’s episode on fandom racism one of the guests said white fans who can acknowledge that fandom racism exists tend to frame it as “just a few bad apples” and get caught up in worrying about not looking like a “bad apple” instead of making fandoms spaces that aren’t hostile for BIPOC. Jag offs hiding behind anon to tell women of color who ship zutara that we have a creepy fetish for imperialism and colonialism suck, but your biggest concern really shouldn’t be the optics or if you can claim superiority over zukka stans.

Yeah the “katara’s a homophobe” nonsense didn’t come from our end of the fandom, but it feels naive at best or dishonest at worst to act like the zutara fandom is uniquely immune to fandom racism. A creator I follow made the excellent point that allyship conditional upon if a poc talks "nicely" about racism is still white supremacy. I believe poc need to be allowed to vent and be salty or angry without being tone-policed. I definitely have my days where I’m like “ugh white people,” or "why must white fans be like this," so I get where the OP was coming from. Ironically the folks that sent them anon hate proved their point. You can always count on hit dogs to hollar.

Fandom is only escapist for some people. It doesn’t exist in a vacuum so you’ll find racism in fandom because there’s racism in the world. Navigating that gets exhausting. There are certain things I enjoy, but for the sake of my sanity I'll only talk about it with friends in real life or only follow fans of color. Before I follow white fans I need to see first that they’re not the kind of person who inspires posts about fandom racism. A good friend of mine loves Star Wars, Kpop, and gaming but after years of attempts at calling in she decided that she’d only interact with woc in those spaces. Again, you get tired.

ATLA wasn’t on my radar until last year so I definitely haven’t read every zutara fic out there but I have noticed a lot of fics do tend to have Katara being the one comforting and supporting Zuko. It’s not inherently wrong of course, it’s just in the grand scheme of things in fiction woc are often cast as eternal caretakers and confidants in fiction:

“How characters of color are portrayed in fanworks, especially fanfiction, is worse than the actual films. They are portrayed as supportive, almost invisible understudies. Any characteristics which they possess in the [MCU] films are stripped and given to other white characters. It is not only erasure. It’s a theft of identity.

Characters of color are positioned within storylines to support the main, white characters. Even within the slash biracial pairings, the character of color is underdeveloped and in a position of servitude within the relationship.”

As the quote above points out this honestly happens in a lot of fandoms. I’ve read fanfic for books, movies, tv shows, and comics and I can’t help but notice that in fics the writers often have the non-white character or-- if neither character is white--the darker skinned character being the care-taker, the bodyguard, or the person who is performing all the emotional labor. It’s not inherently wrong to have a character of color have a nurturing personality, you just have to remember that since Black and brown folks have been saddled with narrative after narrative where we exist to serve leaning into dynamics where the non-white or darker skinned character is providing all the emotional support and getting very little in return has some unfortunate implications.

It’s not better if instead of being defined as the avatar’s girl, Katara’s the fire lord’s girl. Part of the appeal of zutara for me is the idea that Katara could lay down some of her burdens and get some much needed support. I always imagine she’d have some major issues after the war.

I’m going to push back against that statement. Yes, Katara didn't grow up in an abusive household but she has pain and trauma of her own. In fact I’d argue that her believing it’s her job to take care of everyone is rooted in her trauma. Katara needs support and care just as much as anyone else does.

Having read a lot of fics revolving around abuse victims in different fandoms I’ve observed that if fans feel a character’s trauma wasn’t properly addressed in canon, they’ll give them a lot of TLC in fics. But again, reducing the non-white or darker-skinned character to a glorified therapist has some implications.

I feel like the Fire Lady Katara headcanon's been talked to death so long-story short, it’s not inherently racist but it can problematic if it's not clear that Katara is Katara of the Water Tribe wherever she lives. Fics and art where her crown has a crescent moon, she wears blue, or Zuko wears blue when she's in red are the executions I'm fondest of.

When in doubt just listen when poc talk about uncomfortable trends in the fandom. Give fansplaining’s episodes on fandom racism a listen here, here, and here. And very loosely quoting my favorite professor just remember that if a marginalized person says they’re distrustful of a group of people or institution it usually happens after a lot of bad experiences. Don’t center your own comfort and hurt feelings.

“If we truly believe in fandom’s progressive credentials, then perhaps it is necessary for us to listen to critiques that make us uncomfortable rather than those that keep arguing that the status quo is perfectly acceptable—even as there is plenty of evidence to the contrary. ok also, bold opinion time......... i really dont like erwin. at all. every time i watch this, i'm reminded why. yes, he told levi not to dwell and regret the loss of his friends, but he also called it pathetic and he was a fucking manipulative bitch. one thing i've noticed throughout all of aot, including the ovas, is that erwin doesn't understand how good he has it or how privileged he is. obviously, he has had his fair share of struggles much like literally everyone else, but he got to experience so much in his life and have the freedom i don't think many characters got. literally fuck erwin smith and his four thousand pounds of hair gel.

Why do people like Zemo?!

Something I have been wondering about for a while now is why people like Zemo as much as they do. He even gets more appreciation than Sam, who is an incredible person (the reason isnt exactly difficult to figure out*). While Zemo is an interesting character, and he does have some good points it doesnt change that he has killed and hurt a lot of innocent people and a lot of people gloss over that fact. I can understand his motive, but I cant get past what he did.

*(Racism)

Its not suprising because white cis men usually gets away with anything they do, especially if they are charismatic, attractive and rich (like Zemo and Tony). They can kill and hurt as many people as they want, and people will still stan them and either justify what they did, or just gloss over it. And the fact that it keeps happening is a big problem. And its happening both in real life, and in at least most fandoms.

Now I am not saying that liking morally darker people is wrong. I also like some of them. What I am saying is that glossing over their bad actions is a problem. If you add in villanising other characters who havent done anything remotely that bad being critisised more, it gets really irritating.

Now lets get more into Zemo, and compare him to the other two Sokovians who wanted revenge on the avengers. (I wont really be talking about anything past civil war, or this would get very long and my ADHD can only handle so much.)

Zemo killed a lot of innocent people. I couldnt find an exact number on anything but the bombing, but it was over a dozen at least. First the bombing killed 12 people, including king T’chaka (the fact that his death is so glossed over is not lost on me*1). Then he kills Dr. Theo Broussard. Then he uses Bucky*2 to kill and injure an unknown number of people at the Joint Counter Terrorist Centre. None of these people had anything to do with his motive! The only ones I can excuse him for is Karpov and the other 5 winter soldiers. But I cant look past the rest.

Now for his motive. This part I can understand. He lost his father, wife and son. I cant even imagine how painful that must be! However that does not give him the right to hurt innocent people! I can understand why he would blame the avengers, but the only ones among them who were responsible in any way were Tony, Bruce and maybe a tiny bit Wanda (even though Tony having a bad nightmare would have had the same results). The main one responsible is of course Ultron. No one but Tony and Bruce knew about creating Ultron, because if they did they would have stopped it. It was actually a betrayel of Thor. When Ultron broke free they did everything they could to stop him and save people. Its not their fault that they werent able to save everyone. They did everything they could and without them Ultron would have killed everyone on earth. So it makes sense that he would blame some of the avengers, but most were completly innocent and risked their lives trying to save as many as possible. And in Pietros case actually gave their life.

Wich brings me to two other people who also wanted revenge, the Maximoff twins. Although Wanda is usually the only one of them to be held responsible (the fact that she is female and an eastern European immigrant is also not lost on me*). Now some people gloss over what she did too, wich is wrong. Dont get me wrong I love Wanda, but that doesnt mean that I cant admit that she has made some bad mistakes. Granted she feels a lot of remorse and regret wich we dont really see Zemo do. However a lot of people are villanising Wanda completly.

Like Zemo the twins lost their family. Their parents were killed by a Stark missile, then they had to wait for two days with another one right by them. They couldnt move from where they were hiding, so they would have been starving and dehydrated, but all they could do were wait and hope that the missile didnt blow them up. Then they had to move to an orphanage, given the conditions in the country I cant imagine that would be a nice place. And keep in mind they were 10 years old. They got desperate and wanted to protect their country, so they end up joining hydra wich was pretending to be shield at the time. But only untill they got the power they needed to defend their country. Now the twins were younger than Zemo, and the weapon that killed their parents came from from Stark industries. So it makes sense that they would have a personal grudge. However Zemo was older, he led a Sokovians kill squad, and he is a very critical thinker. So it makes less sense for him to hold a personal grudge on most of the avengers.

For their revenge the only people the twins intentionally harmed were the avengers, unlike Zemo who knowingly killed a lot of people that he knew had nothing to do with it. The twins wanted to protect their country, while Zemo declared it a failed state. So why are the twins critisised and hated more than Zemo?!

so i have like. a FUCK ton of pet peeves for fics, and i just wanted to say first that fanfic should not be placed in any boxes or standards because it is freely written and it is something meant to be enjoyed. these are my opinions and all peeve me to only a certain degree (meaning it squicks me out at worst)—so if you are a fic writer and you find yourself doing any of these things, do NOT take it to heart and just know i love you for doing what you do and i wish you all the best ♡

im gonna give reasons why certain things peeve me so i dont just sound like im bitching but generally, when reading ANY fics, i dislike the ff:

- long paragraphs with no breaks. bro i have adhd i cant go through all of this im going to get LOST.

- underlining, bolding, italicizing, AND capitalizing statements for emphasis like sir its chill i think i get the point. imho if you wrote your scene well enough and paced it properly, the most you'll need is an italics and maybe an exclamation mark. u gotta trust ur own writing and the reading comprehension of your audience.

- jittery perspective jumps especially when its fic about characters who use the same pronouns and youre constantly shifting the thoughts being presented. it... gets kinda confusing.

- i already said it previously but i cannot STRESS how much i dislike the whole "fuck redemption arcs and fuck all authority figures except LoV for some reason" theme. it annoys me and i just flat out dont agree with it

- HATE tropes that reduce deku to being like 🥺👉👈 uwu okie soft helpless bean. theres nothing wrong with it if thats how you prefer deku, but i just get annoyed by it

- ANYTIME BKDK HAS AN UNEQUAL DYNAMIC. again. nothing wrong with exploring it in fanfiction. i just dislike reading fics that make either deku or bakugou blatantly weaker than the other. i love quirkless deku fics but i hate ones where he's also characterized as amounting to nothing and still acts like bakugous punching bag/okay with bakugou disrespecting him. their whole dynamic in canon is built on a great deal of respect

- speaking of bkdks power dynamic, FRICK GOSH I HATE SEEING FICS WHERE DEKU "realizes bakugous been abusing him for years!" and gets him expelled from ua and everyone claps. like. LIKE??? N. NO???? thats not how it works 😭

- all might slander. also unjustified or unnuanced endeavor slander where they dont tackle the complexity of his character. also also unjustified or unnuanced bakugous mom slander. this ones a bit controversial so i wont talk about it much.

- sexist homophobic or racist bakugou. im kicking that away. no. especially fics where bakugous past bullying is explained as "repressed homosexuality". i like making that as a joke but i genuinely do no believe in it.

- BAD MOM MIDORIYA INKO. ITS A TROPE I SEE SOMETIMES AND IT MAKES ME CRY I DONT HAVE A RATIONAL REASONING FOR IT I JUST LOVE INKO

- fics where ochako is obviously very reduced into a supporting figure with absolutely no dimension except being a supportive character and maybe having a shoe-horned wlw romance just for the sake of making her unavailable. shes my fave bnha girl and sometimes in fics i can literally FEEL her character being butchered to only show up when deku needs Love Advice. *note that this only applies when literally every other male character has something else going on for them and its just the females being sidelined into Boy Advice Givers and Talking Sense.

- fics that very obviously belittle asian principles and culture. family means a GOOD DEAL to a lot of asian cultures and fics that spout "if you dont like your family then leave and find your own! its that simple!" usually sound incredibly ignorant or outright claim moral superiority to the weight of familial bond in asian culture. same with manners, respect, and discipline.

- jeALOUSY/CHEATING FICS OK IM SELFISH I ONLY WANT BKDK TOGETHER LIKE IM DEKUBOWL ONLY SOMETIMES BUT BKDK ALWAYS HAS TO END UP TOGETHER

- "murdering is ok if its characters i hate 🥰" ... listen, you do you bestie but like. no thanks. if i wanted to read about mineta getting murdered by momo with a pistol i dont think id be opening a bkdk soulmarks au

- any dekusquad slander 😭 i love them okay

ok I don’t consider myself a jj stan— in general I’m pretty neutral towards her— but I actually always felt like 5x13 was a pretty solidly good jj episode?? she doesn’t really do her whole “I’m a mom so I know everything” thing, we see her noticeably struggle with some stuff (“I shouldn’t have said ‘if’” etc). this isn’t the first or last time she has pushed for the team to take a case based on intuition and been correct (Legacy, North Mammon, Mosley Lane etc).

I just feel like some of the criticism towards her for this episode isn’t really fair?? like the whole “traumadumping” thing…literally everyone has had cases like this where it affects them more because of their past or where they act irrationally or get too involved or something, and generally the way we learn about it as the audience is from them talking about it/telling someone else on the team?? i mean, the reid centric episodes alone, come on. (and no hate towards reid either, I’m pretty neutral towards him too).

and like. honestly, I’d say that the conversation at the end between Hotch and JJ is one of my favourite moments of the two of them. she feels safe confiding in him, they both seem genuinely comfortable w having this kind of conversation. it’s one of the (relatively) few times in the second half of s5 where Haley’s death is referenced…idk I know it’s mentioned a few times but like not nearly enough considering how traumatic is was for the whole team, never mind Hotch lmao. i didn’t find jj sharing her own loss with him to be condescending, tbh— maybe it’s bc I have made some of the best connections w ppl in my life by sharing things and letting myself be vulnerable and vice versa, but I felt like it was a real bonding moment for them. obviously she didn’t have the trauma of Foyet and everything but ultimately, losing a sister to suicide at a young and formative age, someone you loved and looked up to, finding her body…that is all extremely traumatizing and having to navigate that loss is something that I can imagine would really shape a person. and I think even though it’s not the exact same situation, being able to empathize with Hotch’s (much more recent) loss, which I kind of imagine he is quietly trying to cope with in the background of all this…I feel like he genuinely is moved by it?? the reassurance that it gets better, the feeling of being a little bit understood?? when he says ‘thank you for everything’…idk he sounds so sincere and I think he just appreciates feeling maybe a little bit seen in that moment. the whole team is kinda wary of him rn, trying to be supportive but also kind of worried he’s going to fall apart and why wouldn’t he, honestly?? so in the back of the plane, just being allowed to be who he is at that moment— a grieving husband— connecting with someone over it— idk, that’s just always how I’ve interpreted it lol. And based on this and how he behaves w her both before and after this ep (especially in ‘JJ’)…she is clearly invaluable to him (as they all are).

and I know you hate her so it’s fair that you’ve interpreted it all differently and that’s fine!! believe me, she annoys the hell out of me too a lot of the time and I definitely agree with some of ur criticism towards her lol (she is so annoying w the mom stuff…girl we get it). but in general I try to give the benefit of the doubt to all the characters and believe that they are coming from a place of compassion and love for one another, and doing the best they can w the information they have. & I also find it helpful to think about how we’re just seeing these glimpses of their lives, and that the writers suck at giving backstory or explanations or anything so we have to do it for ourselves lmaoo. anyway keep doing the lords work w the screencaps, much appreciated <3333 just thought I’d add my two cents lol sorry for rambling!!

this is fair ig… i just dont really like the way jj or spencer address their trauma lol especially since it’s usually concerning someone else… lmao the way they make it all about themselves is just so self centered and immature akdhskdh it pisses me off

part of what frustrates me specifically about jj episodes is her extremely narrow view on suicide and what it looks like. she acts as though her one experience with suicide is this all encompassing truth. it’s something she tends to do a lot—whether its as her experience as a mother or growing up in a small town or being a school athlete. if it’s outside her realm of knowledge then its either not real or it’s trivial. and its just particularly annoying when its about suicide because it is something thats so complicated that a lot of people struggle with in very different ways that she just… refuses to understand

to be fair i actually do like that conversation between hotch and jj on the plane lol bc it seems like something jj hasnt shared w anyone in a long time. but part of the problem is that we see absolutely no growth with jj about this. she acts the exact same w every suicide case, w every case ab a sister dying… and yk i get it, certain things are gonna bring up certain memories and it’s understandable to be disturbed by that. but she never acknowledges it? she uses her personal life as the end-all-be-all for these situations that she relates to and instead of recognizing her bias, she leans into it and calls it empathy even tho she’s just projecting her specific experiences onto everyone

now i know a lot of what annoys me is just the writers being dumb, so i should probably just ignore it the way i do when emily is annoying in demonology or hotch is annoying in psychodrama. like you said, giving them the benefit of the doubt. but jj already has so much going against her akdhskhd i only have so much patience

Hello, I just finished Saeran’s after ending and I have a lot of things to say and I am going to write it down while I'm still all keyed up about it.

First of all… Please DO NOT ask me how much money I spent to finish this as fast as I did…. I’m grown but my bank account is certainly going to have a good ole fashioned CHUCKLE at this….. It’s been a long quarantine I deserve a lil happiness as a treat methinks!

I have been playing this absolutely insane game since I think 2016? When I first started playing the deep routes had JUST come out I think? And I was just finishing up high school and am now a college grad...lmao

I’ve played all routes at least once except Jaehee but i’ve seen walkthroughs of her route (I’ve heard it makes you hate Jumin and he’s my favorite so um. hehe). V’s and Saeran’s routes I found to be so emotionally intense and just….a lot and I've been waiting a long ass god damn time for this after ending okay…. I would theorize and make up an ending in my head but i’m no writer so it was hard to figure out lol. I’m a Jumin stan mostly but I love everybody and yeah I should probably play that jumin dlc too but I need like a DAY to recover from Saeran’s AE. Enough about me HERE are my thoughts on it overall

Rika’s change in demeanor from Saeran's actual route is certainly a Choice. I find her much more bearable this time around and unfortunately i think I was too nice to her and ended up with a bad end LMFAO

I was happy to see Saeran stand up for himself and become stronger and confident. You go king!

The CG of Yoosung laying in Zen’s lap is everything to me…

HOWEVER YUP I sure did get a bad ending and I was so mad fdsafdskfdhsf ! (I would be happy to clarify how I got the good one the second time.) MAKE SURE To SAVE EARLY in days 2 and 3 bc the branches on day 4 is where the bad end will show up. For me it was the first day 4 chat and then a story mode titled “SAVIOR”.... If you see that RUN FOR THE HILLS!!

I was so mad! But I had saved in day 2 and replayed and MANAGED to get good end

I think it was satisfying TO A DEGREE….To see Rika understand where she was wrong, why she was wrong, fess up and even APOLOGIZE! I was very surprised.

Saeran and Saeyoung are Certainly twins with the amount that those two self sacrifice in every route MY GOD…..

The scene with Jumin talking to his father and the other scene of him praying oh my god I cannot tell you how happy I was to see him begin to understand and address his own feelings in a route that was not his own. My main problem with Jumin’s route has always been the trapping MC in his penthouse aspect.. This way Jumin understands love and emotions without being overly possessive !!! YAY also loved seeing him be on good terms with his dad who was surprisingly profound

That last Story mode was Really a Lot…. and Strange things occurred which I will get into in just a minute

I was happy with how they handled it for the most part. I think Cheritz heard our feedback about V’s after ending and was like okay….let’s try something different

HOWEVER

Saeran…. Sweet kind saeran… IS SO AFFECTIONATE HAHA….

He must have said I love you like 300 times…..very mushy gushy flowery language...and maybe that’s just his personality but for me it was like eating cake with buttercream cake. It means well, but god damn is it sugary and going to cause a stomach ache later.

He was just… SO MUCH! SO forward and ON all the time in his affections. I honestly felt kind of smothered and by day 3 and 4 I was sooooo over all the compliments… King you’ve come a very long way, but ur still putting MC on a pedestal and probably need to see a therapist.

Nextly….Rika and V….. Naw that knock out gas really ...that hurt lol. Coming from “I would do anything to protect RFA” V? Idk like…. EYE felt betrayed reading that. It was just hurtful. I can’t even imagine how the members would have felt as they were passing out. It was just so cruel. I suppose I understand why but like?? Just TERRIBLE

Them being in cahoots with the agency and the prime minister..HUH??? Also too much

V just felt so irresponsible like I do understand that he ended up in a weird web of secrets that’s hard to untangle but he’s so fucking stubborn he’s SO stubborn it makes me insane. The forgiveness thing…… Okay so I think some people will not like that Saeran decided to “forgive” the people who hurt him (Rika, V, Saejoong, his mother). I would point out that I actually think this was approached somewhat well. He says at one point that he doesn’t think they’re good or bad, just people. I think he sounded mature and like this was the way for him personally to accomplish his healing process. Would I have loved for Saeran to flip V and Rika off and kick Saejoong off a cliff? Yea I really would. But like…. If that’s what HE needs to do to heal then who am I to judge?

HOWEVER…. Everything Eye just said goes out the window when the scenes at the end with Saejoong come up… I was PERPLEXED. Like why did he HUG his deranged father who just kicked the shit out of him??? Also all the chat options that MC has with him r like blah blah you’re like this because no one loves you were so corny to me LMFAOOOO?

AND WHEN HE WAS IN THE ROOM LATER WITH SAERAN… i’m sorry but if that were me I would have called a nurse to deck his ass. Cool he turned himself in YOU SUCK SOOOO BAD AND I NEVER WANT YOU TO COME NEAR SAEYOUNG AND SAERAN AGAIN THANKS.

acomaf review

so i recently reread acomaf and i made a post about everything that i liked/didn’t like (more of the latter). i also started another one so some of that is repeated in here. i have referenced page numbers but they are all from the uk paperback edition so i don’t think they will be the same for everyone. it’s all chronological. there will probably be typos since i wrote this on a whim pls ignore them. this is quite anti rhys so if that bothers you just ignore this and pls don’t attack me for my opinions.

(pg. 24) feyre says "I don't know if I can handle them calling me High Lady." implying that she doesn't even want to be in a position of power in prythian. is that the trauma talking? tamlin also says that there is no such thing as high lady which makes no sense bc high lord power is hereditary so it should be able to go to women too. also this makes rhys making feyre high lady make no sense.

(pg. 29) poor lucien i cannot believe his brothers did that to his girlfriend

(pg. 48-49) feyre threw a shoe at rhysand and all im saying is that, if nesta threw a shoe at cassian, they would try and flay her alive

(pg. 73) rhys says there can be high ladies... but there never was one?? how does he know they can exist? it doesn't add up. again, if a person could just be given the high lord power, then what is the point of having the high lord bloodline

the 90 pages in between are just feyre getting upset and rhys saving her from the spring court

(pg. 163) i am diSGOSTED "You know I'm always happy to tangle in the sheets with you Amren ... I know how much you enjoy Illyrian-" seriously?? i don't think this is a normal friendship dynamic. also we hear about how dangerous amren is but cassian literally just made this comment and she did nothing. and we dont see her do anything to others at all. the only thing to suggest that she's a powerful being was the end of acowar

(pg. 169) amren calling the illyrians "barbarians" does not sit right with me

(pg. 209) "They might not be happy about it, but I'll make Nesta and Elain do it" you'll make your sisters risk their lives and status? to help the fae? the race that enslaved humans for centuries? okay feyre. everyone's right, youre a great sister

(pg. 215) rhys offers feyre sex with cassian? how are the nesta stans the ones that don't gaf about cassian when his own friend (who he considers a brother) says this about him? i don't think after 500 years of knowing him and liking him nesta would say any of this

(pg. 229) cassian gets mad at rhys for endangering feyre's life for no reason and then rhys says "you would do the same" like nO SIR NO HE WOULDN'T

(pg. 246) feyre says nesta looks older in her eyes. she's obviously been affected by her sister running away with the fae and her and elain even thought she was dead. don't try and tell me that she doesn't care bye

(pg. 255) cassian's dinner table speech about how feyre died for the fae and nesta should stop being a bitch. um, sir your people enslaved hers for CENTURIES? and you want to play the fucking victim? okayyy sure. have fun with that

(pg. 280) rhys doesn't make his people play the tithe but he lets them live in tents in snowy mountains? while he lives in comfort? and im supposed to support this guy? hard pass for me

(pg. 288) rhys stalks about keeping velaris a secret and says "My people do not seem to be suffering much from it." basically ignoring the people in the hewn city and illyria as his people? tehy are all hated by the rest of the courts and apparently rhys is just cool with that bc velaris is fine.

(pg. 326) all i want to say is that cresseida deserves so much better

(pg. 361) okay lol jurian was "obsessive" in his pursuit to free his people. why couldn't he just be chill about it? his people could wait you know. he didn't hav eto go batshit crazy. it's not like they were servants their whole lives and were being treated like they weren't people.

(pg. 377) okay so this is when cassian comes back from giving nesta the letter (wings and ember) and he says something about how the family is full of "bossy, know-it-all females" my mans you invaded HER PERSONAL SPACE and asked her intrusive and inappropriate questions. she literally did what any other woman would have done.

(pg. 386) rhys fully says "neither side is innocent" when talking to the mortal queens BOI THE FAE KEPT THEM AS SLAVES WHAT DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND STOP TRYING TO SOUND OPPRESSED OMG

(pg. 393) they are talking about how miryam and drakon fell in love when she was still with jurian and apparently it's jurian's fault bc he was too obsessed with liberating the humans? you can say what you want about them fighting for the humans but it's clear they really don't give a shit

(pg. 398) feyre hears mor's story and says that she understands why rhys can't forgive nesta. she actually just compared what mor's family did (trying to marry off mor and nailing a note to her body and leaving her at the autumn court) to what nesta did (was mean to feyre when their family was in poverty and didn't stop feyre from hunting). chilee wut

(pg. 415) the court of nightmares scene and all i want to say is DID ANYONE IN THE HEWN CITY CONSENT TO SEE THAT. also their high lord using women like objects isn't exactly sending his people the best message, especially the youthful ones. like if their ruler is doing it, then why shouldn't they? rhys is kind of making it worse for women ( at the very least he isn't helping AT ALL)

(pg. 443) mor says that she hates the illyrian mountains and says that they should be "burned to the ground", completely forgetting about all of the people there, the culture and the fact that she has 2 and half illyrian friends

(all of chapter 54) rhys tells us his sad backstory and a bunch of excuses but never apologises for his actions utm. am i supposed to excuse sexual assault because he was emotionally distraught? bc im not going to do that

(pg. 548-553) nesta stands up A LOT for the humans and tries to convince the queens to give them the book. we see a lot of her humanity in this scene. don't tell me she's just a cold bitch please read with your eyes and see for yourself. ALSO THE NESSIAN BIT ON PAGE 553 LETS GOOOO

(pg. 559) feyre talks about how nesta feels everything too much and i just want to ask where this feyre was in acofas when her sister was off in the deep end with her ptsd

(pg. 589) jurian is called a monster for literally no fucking reason omg give my guy a break

(pg. 606) lucien helps elain when she is fae and on the ground soaking wet. this is all before he finds out that she is his mate. this is why we stan <3
