I get he can feel her emotions without having physical contact. but why does bro announce them to the room? why does he throw them back in her face whenever she's like "hey I'd really rather not talk about it."

like is their connection really that deep or is Keefe just overly aware and invasive... ? people be like "he always knows what she's feeling!" like no shit??? she doesn't have to tell him? this isn't built on trust??

she often ends up telling him things bc he's like "I already know. I can feel ur emotions remember? and they're heavy ones, so you need to talk to someone (me)"

he never gets any criticism for this.

but if Fitz wants to ask and be a bit interrogative about her thoughts and feelings *without reading her mind* he's overstepping boundaries and should just take no for an answer? he doesn't know how she feels all the time, that's why he has to ask more directly than Keefe.

The Judoflip in HOO

Do you know what always bewildered me? The judoflip scene in HOO. Not only did Annabeth unexpectedly slam Percy (her boyfriend, not an enemy) on the hard ground with her knees pressed to his chest and her arm to his throat as she threated him to never leave her, but also Percy was slammed to the ground ON HIS BACK WHERE HIS MORTAL SPOT ONCE WAS!!! Annabeth didn't know that he didn't have the curse anymore. That could have easily killed him! One misplaced rock could have hit the small of his back, and he would be DEAD!

Not only was this an abusive and concerning reaction to slam Percy on the ground, but it really shows how much Percy's fatal flaw being loyalty can not see how this is WRONG because he laughed! You don't hit your partner if they're being stupid; you don't elbow them in the ribs if they can't guess what you're thinking; you don't kick them in the shins to shut up. AND YOU DON'T JUDOFLIP YOUR PARTNER FOR BEING KIDNAPPED!!!

This isn't a romantic or healthy relationship. It's toxic and unhealthy codependent where Percy will give and give, and Annabeth will take and take until Percy has nothing left.

Thinking of the Nie disciple that told Nie Mingjue it was Meng Yao who stayed behind to clean up corpses on the battlefield today.

Nie Mingjue didn't just randomly stumble upon poor lil meowyao eating bread in the novel, he was already looking for him to thank and reward him for his work.

That's what makes it so fun that nieyao's first conflict will end up being about someone else taking credit for Meng Yao's work.

And I'm sure that Nie Mingjue's actual opinions on plagiarism are a lot more nuanced, all we really get from him in this scene is "well you shouldn't kill someone over it!" which leaves a lot of room for what punishments he thinks are appropiate. But I bet that it isn't occuring to him in this moment that the only reason he knows Meng Yao at all, the only reason he got such a capable deputy, is that he noticed someone was taking care of the dead and cared enough to want to know their name. And then the Nie disciples didn't lie to him. The disciple he asked could have said "it was me, Zongzhu" to rise in the ranks himself, but he didn't. He went and asked others, who all also could have taken the credit, but they didn't. Someone saw Meng Yao working and decided to be honest about it and that simple decision is the catalyst for Meng Yao becoming Nie Mingjue's deputy.

Meng Yao can't just work hard to get results, others have to acknowledge that work. If they don't, it's as if he didn't do anything at all.

I've been thinking today about Jopson's anger or, rather, the lack thereof.

He has just as much right as anyone else - maybe even more - to feel anger and resentment in response to the hardships he's faced. But I don't know that we ever really get to see it all that much and I find that interesting yet strange?

It's not that we don't see strong emotion from Jopson.

We catch a glimpse of him scrapping with fellow seamen after Silna's kidnapping, share his exquisite pain as he recounts the tale of his mother, see him looking down his nose at Hickey and admonishing Little/Le Vesconte when they propose leaving the sick behind.

But I don't think any of those emotions can really be classed as anger and even if they could, it always seems to come in response to external stimuli, not necessarily from within?

In the midst of this discussion, I have to paraphrase a bit but the following was actually expressed:

Both (straight) women and (straight) men have a problem with insisting on impossible standards in the dating market. So many women nowadays want a man who is six-foot-something, in finance making six figures, not overweight, etc., and they don't realize that it's a very small percentage of men who satisfy all of those criteria. And men make this mistake too: they want a woman who is not on the left, not taking some kind of antidepressent, not overweight...

I know it could be viewed as just a silly flippant comment by an early-20's conservative cultural commentator, but I... don't even know how to feel about our current times where it's even halfway credible to suggest the analog of "over six feet, six figures" (as an unreasonable standard) is "not on the left, not on antidepressents". That's just weird in multiple different ways, yet has enough of a vague ring of plausibility about it that someone might actually say this.

A day or two after I saw part of the above-linked podcast episode, Aella published a post which opens by mentioning a study result saying that women (in 2006!) equally value a man being 6' instead of 5'6'' and a man making an additional $175k a year. I had to double-check to make sure I wasn't misreading that salary increase figure by an order of magnitude. (The study also shows that being 5'11.5' instead of 5'8'' -- my height on a good day -- is equivalent to $138k difference in income.)

I know I'm probably just fixating on particularly dumb comments/data, but the dating world continues to look depressing, folks. Well, at least as long as it continues to be predominantly online.
