So if you're making a recipe that includes a herb you don't like (mint in this case) and you think "well I'll just add more of the other herb in the recipe" do NOT do this if said other herb is coriander (or cilantro)
Spent an hour and a half making my dinner and I had two throw most of it in the bin because I started gagging after two mouthfuls)

hihi! I absolutely love ur hcs and fics!! (I may or may not have downloaded Tumblr just from your fics on AO3 👉👈)
anyways- I wanted to ask if you have any hcs for unlikely friendships among the ghouls? Like maybe Lyca and Mido would get along well, or Leo and Rui?
also do you have any hcs for Towa's flower nicknames for the other ghouls? (Like how he calls MC "dandelion", Edward "Rafflesia", etc)
OH MY GOD??????????? this is literally the sweetest ask I have ever gotten seriously seriously thank you so much for liking my fics AND DOWNLOADING TUMBLR BECAUSE OF THEM??? OMG 😭 THIS IS SURREAL...... I hope we get to interact a lot more here now!!!! >:3
Now now about your request, it's actually something I've never thought about!!
Off the top of my head, I think these are some good friends:
Haru and Tohma: two tired men who work a lot and bond because of their exhaustion 🤝 Haru could go to the vault whenever he is suffering from heat exhaustion after spending too much time under the sun and Tohma could take his walks around Jabberwock’s fields! Mutual benefits!
Lyca, Kaito and Luca: @ghoulspaw had the great idea that Kaito and Luca would be the best boys to play with Lyca >:3 and I think they'd be quite understanding (Kaito would take a while to warm up to him because he's a wuss) and Luca could help Lyca with his studies!!!
Alan and Lyca: I promise not all of them will involve Lyca. But I JUST KNOW Lyca would be :O!!!!!! after seeing Alan and how strong he is. Cue new sparring buddy for Alan!!!!
Kaito and Sho: I think this is either a bit canon or someone else already had a headcanon??? But Kaito bakes sweets I think?? AM I THINKING OF A FIC I READ???? But anyway, Sho and him could exchange recipes! Leo would hate it though because he hates Kaito but That's Not About Him.
Ed and Zenji: come on. You can't tell me Ed doesn't see ghosts. Zenji would be more than happy to watch youtube with Ed and would force him to like every video he posts AND subscribe. And hit the bell.
Ren and Kaito: they would be that meme that's a bunch of ppl thinking "wow these people are a bunch of freaks! I'm the only normal one here." Except they would think "wow this guy is a loser. Thank goodness I'm not like that!" In the end, they are both losers and Ren will worsen Kaito's gambling addiction by introducing him to a bunch of gacha games.
Okay if you have more ideas please let me know because this was actually so much fun LMAO
Regarding Towa's nicknames, I genuinely think that him nicknaming people comes from a place of disdain. Like, his nicknames aren't necessarily based on the language of flowers. Sometimes, he just associates the characteristic of the plant with the character's personalities.
Edward is Rafflesia because rafflesia is the corpse flower, which smells rotten and like dead bodies. Ren is Wolfsbane because it's extremely poisonous, even to the touch. PC is Dandelion because it's a weed and it's weak, and Towa made it very clear that he thinks PC is cute because she's weak.
I don't actually know why Kaito is Coriander, but given that some people are born with the genes that make coriander taste like soap, maybe it's a nod to the fact that not everyone likes him (since he's not very well liked in Frostheim)???? Genuinely have no idea
As for Zenji, I imagine Towa associated him with Iris based on one of the flower's meaning, which is "bearer of messages and a symbol of deep sentiments" which... fits Zenji, his role in Hotarubi and his love for his baby brother quite well.
And I THINK that he doesn't refer to Haru as a flower/herb because he genuinely likes and respects Haru (unlike Ren and Ed) and doesn't think of him as someone weak and pathetic (unlike PC and Kaito).
SO.......... KNOWING ALL THAT...... now let's get into the name ideas *rubs hands* not all of them will be associated with the flower's meanings btw!!
Alan: anthurium! It's the strongest flower >:)
Sho: basil or thyme merely because of how useful they are in cuisine hehe
Taiga: with how much Taiga raids Jabberwock, Towa probably already got a nickname for him, but if it was me, I'd say petunia because one of its meanings is trouble and he's always causing Haru trouble.
Romeo: mandrake. Because he screams a lot LMAO and mandrake is that root that, in myths, people say screams when you uproot it.
Haku: lotus!!! One of its meanings is mystery and I think it fits him since he's allllll mysterious
Subaru: wisteria, I can't associate him with any other flower 😭
Lyca: lupine, for obvious reasons. It's a legume and it means wolf!!!!
Jiro: okay this name is UGLY but: rhododendron. It's means "beware" in Victorian flower language!
I genuinely didn't have any other ideas for the other ghouls so if you think of any, tell meeeeeeeee this was such a fun ask I love these types of requests!!!!
ALSO THANK YOU FOR JOINING TUMBLR AGAIN........ STILL CANT BELIEVE IT 😭

ask game: 43 (can i add a question? if you like them, I'm open to new recipes :D)
43. what’s your take on spicy foods?
YES. (while my gf and i were discussing this we did say it's my toxic trait that i am a spicy food snob lmfao)
a lot of my faves when it comes to spicy foods are basically traditional goan comfort cuisine. i don't really have a recipe on hand but those should be easy to find! i love sarapatel/sorpotel, prawn curry, balchão, xacuti, and goan sausage which adds a nice something spicy even if i'm just sauteeing some veggies with it! the thing about goan cuisine is it goes hard on the sour curries. it's very typical and imho very yummy!
one i make really often and just eyeball is a simple dahl. i start with onion, a powdered curry spice mix that my grandfather makes (it has ground chili for the spice), and olive oil in a pan until the onion is soft and fragrant, add garlic, wait a bit, add diced tomato/tomato paste (i really prefer just dicing the tomatoes myself), red lentil, coconut milk (i eyeball, but this is what lets you tone down the spicyness if need be), stock, wait for ~5-10 minutes, then make a nest or two to drop an egg into, wait a bit for the egg to cook, stir in some spinach leaves, and when done garnish with lemon or a bit of greek yogurt (you could go with coriander but i am cursed with the coriander soap gene. the fun part is i got that from my indian dad LMFAO). sometimes i use pre-cooked chickpeas instead of lentil, sometimes i use savoy cabbage for the vegetable and add it at the start before the tomato.

@akagamiko asked: ❧ What is your favorite comfort food? :) (Munday Questions)
Tumblr media
// Instant noodles! It’s such a simple thing, often cheap too but no matter how unwell or unhappy I’m feeling, a bowl of noodles always goes down well. Most brands tend to be great, even the cheapest brands like ko-lee but nongshim is a particular favourite when I can get it. Can’t stand naked noodles though, they put dried coriander/cilantro in and it tastes just like washing up liquid.

do you ever just wonder if you have that gene where coriander tastes like soap even though you like coriander? and then think "ooh that'd mean i like soap? and then just put a spoonful of hand soap in your mouth to test it only to realise you definitely don't have the gene and there's a reason people with it know they have it?
yeah me neither.
on a completely unrelated note does anyone know how to get the taste of soap out of their mouth? i need to know for uh...
for science. yeah, for science. that's it.

Eating more coriander in an attempt to "train your brain to like it" is exactly how my Mum learned that if you have that particular gene, its actually also very likely that you have an intolerance or allergy to it.
For my Mum it started just with the taste and the tingling in her mouth. Now if she consumes even the tiniest amount of it (either the leaf or the seed, all parts are bad) she will simultaneously vomit and shit herself. Its quite nasty.
I find it tastes like soap or ladybirds (I put one in my mouth once as a kid, it tasted bad) and it gives me the mouth tingling. So I've done what I feel is the much more sensible approach and avoid it entirely because I do not want to end up with as violent a response to it as my Mum now has.
I don't understand why for this one herb people get so concerned about people who dislike it "learning to like it" and why people will try to claim the allergy doesn't exist. Why are they getting so defensive over a herb?
im a lil high and i have cilantro soap questions
if cilantro tastes like soap to some people why is it such an uncommon soap scent? I feel like things that taste like soap should be soap
before soap existed what did the soap gene cavemen say cilantrussy. hang on i have to stop this mid sentence because my phone autocorrected cilantro to cilantrussy which means i have previously typed that word out enough for my phone to think it’s a word and more of a word than cilantro. i have some inward reflection to do.

Ah, dearest gaudiest patronuses, you have been misguided
You see, Cilantro and Coriander are one in the same!
Cilantro is the Spanish word for Coriander. If you are speaking English, the proper term for the plant would be Coriander, if you are USAmerican English, it will be Cilantro due to the high levels of Mexican cusine in USAmerica, and in Spanish it will be called Cilantro.
In cooking terms, however, (and I will go off of USAmerican English for this), Cilantro refers to the leafy greens of the plant. The stuff in salsa and pico de gallo. Cilantro is an herb. Coriander in cooking terms refers to the seeds of the plant. Coriander is a spice because of it being anything other than the leafy greens.
And in doing this you have brought upon an impossible conundrum. Linguistically, cuisine-wise, and botany wise, there is no answer. Both of them are correct, but incorrect in a different context. Both of them are incorrect, but correct in a different context.
I don't even like cilantro anyways because I have the gene that makes it taste like soap, I am just a botany nerd that wanted to rant

Answers to questions in the notes:
Yes, coriander and cilantro are the same plant. In the U.S., the leaves are typically called cilantro, while the dried seeds are called coriander. My impression is that the UK and India use coriander to refer to both, and I'm curious how they differentiate them. I can usually tell from the context of a recipe (is it chopped or ground?). They taste very different from each other and are not interchangeable. (Thai cuisine also uses coriander root, which again tastes distinct from the leaves and seeds.)
The "soap gene" refers to a common genetic variation that makes cilantro leaves (but not coriander seeds) taste soapy. People I've known who have the gene can't stand food that has even a little cilantro in it.
As to the fact that 9% off respondents report that they have the soap gene but don't hate cilantro, Tumblr is the place where the weird kids (affectionate) hang out. And some people just like to pick the weirdest answer to a poll.

"Oh." Andrew was married? But he wasn't wearing a ring... was that because of his work? Why did this make Roman feel so weird? There was this tightness in his chest like someone had lodged a ping-pong ball where it shouldn't have been. Roman listened with a pinched brow, an expression he didn't even realise he was making until he felt it relax. So Andrew was separated. His marriage hadn't worked out. "I'm sorry that it didn't work out. But, to be fair, at least you made it to the altar. My former fiancee and I weren't so lucky." Roman admitted, perhaps because Andrew had been so forthcoming. He felt like he should be a little vulnerable in return.
"I didn't always. Before I came here, I lived and worked in New York, at a restaurant called NOVUS. It's got three Michelin stars, and the regular tasting menu will cost you $305 per head. I would work twelve hours shifts, six days a week. There was no time for cooking at home and... I don't think I could've stomached it." Roman's eyes glazed over and his voice became monotone as he spoke about his former life. He was quiet for a few moments, and then he shook himself out of it. "It's different here. At the minute, I'm only working here four days a week, so I actually have time to sort out the farm. And if I wanna tweak the menu, I gotta know what I'm asking my chefs to do, y'know?"
Allergic to coriander? Roman would remember that. "No, I don't cook with coriander." He admitted. He let out a sigh. "...I got the soap gene so it just tastes like soap to me. I hate it." He shrugged.
Tumblr media
"You wanna be married?" Roman asked. It wasn't an unusual goal, a lot of people wanted it. A lot of people were told they should want it and maybe didn't look deep enough to think about if they really did, but there were some who truly wanted it. Lifelong love, companionship, someone to care for and be cared about. It was a lovely dream... Roman had considered it for a while, but being the chef he had been, the career he had... It hadn't been possible. He warned people who got close to him that he was a shitty boyfriend, with not enough time for others. But now... He was still swamped, with the diner and the farm and the house but they had been in a bad way when he'd got here. They were improving and he had help now. People were reaching out and helping him. It hadn't been like that in New York.
"Yeah, it does. But that's the life you chose when you become a chef, or a cook or... work in any place that serves lunch." Roman chuckled and shrugged. At least dinner service should hopefully be a quiet one tonight, with it being their slowest day for evenings.
"Yes, I did." Roman felt himself smiling back at Andrew. In truth, the suggestion for change might've been a shock to the staff, many of whom had been accustomed to things staying the same. Now Roman was here, changing everything, disturbing the still waters of the pond. "And yeah, they're taking it in stride. They're doing a great job." And they were. He was lucky to have a good team.
"Recommendations... The maple beef cobbler?" Roman suggested, his eyes meeting Andrew's. "The chicken pot pie is good. I'll admit I... haven't altered that recipe much. You've already had the spaghetti and meatballs so... What are you feeling?" Roman asked.

Also there's stuff like having genes that make coriander taste like soap or tannins feel/ taste extra shitty. Sometimes it tastes fine to you and super shitty to them just because tastes vary. Sometimes kids are just grossed out by the concept of something and it's not about taste/ texture (I refuse to eat small fish where I have to eat eyeballs, also I don't like eating dried rotten fish or brains even though they're considered a delicacies).
Brains is probably a good example since a lot of people who don't have that as a common cultural food are weirded out by it. Think about how you would feel to be forced to eat brains/ offal/ something you havent tasted before but don't want to try because you don't like the idea of it. And keep in mind that often that's what your kid is feeling when they don't want to try something. (Maybe I'm typical minding and non picky eaters just don't feel like that about anything).
I like egg whites and hate egg yolk for hard-boiled eggs, but luckily my family were mostly fine with me trading yolk for extra whites with other people. Although there was still the attitude of 'you need to LEARN to like this'.
When I was a kid, I would only eat the yolk from an egg. Didn’t matter if it was boiled, fried, poached or deviled, the yolk was all I wanted.
My reason for this was “the white makes me feel sick”/“it hurts my tummy”. And everyone did what most folk do when kids say such things, they roll their eyes and call you a fussy eater and complain to anyone who will listen about how hard your child is to feed.
They won’t eat sandwich meat, they won’t eat minced beef, they won’t eat nuts, they won’t eat tomatoes, they won’t eat pasta, they won’t eat fish or spinach, they barely eat fruits and ugh you should see the tantrum they kick up when you try to give them yogurt for a healthy snack. And get this, they will only eat the yolk from eggs. What an annoying kid, right?
So, anyway, as it turns out egg whites are high in histamine while egg yolks are not. Everything I listed up there, is actually high in histamine or is histamine releasing and as someone who just found out after 20+ years of abject misery and several near misses with anaphylaxis that they have histamine intolerance disorder/possible MCAS, I feel really fucking validated about childhood me being a fussy eater.
So uh, pro tip to parents, while there is every chance your kid genuinely is a fussy eater, please also consider that there may also be something at play going on and they’re not just doing it to personally piss you off. Whether it’s a food allergy, intolerance, sensory/texture issues or an issue as insidious and hard to detect as mine, please don’t assume your child is just being difficult for funsies. And please don’t force them to eat something they say makes them feel sick. There’s probably a valid reason, and it warrants investigation rather just assuming your kid exists to tick you off.
